They not only transport our families, they enrich our lives and renew our enthusiasm daily. It’s your Land Rovers that connect us daily with the rest of the world from our Westford, Vermont barn building. Letters to the Editor
Dear Rovers North, Thank you for your generous contribution to SCARR II in May, 2005. The event, held at the Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area just outside of Gilmer, was a huge success! East Texas was dry this year but more that 107 guests attended with 70 vehicles taking to the trails. Club members came from Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Shreveport, LA. Land Rover North America hosted the rookie run, dinner was provided by the Texas Rovers Cook and the sponsor raffle was a huge success. The club was able to provide a donation to the Ross Mabey family. Thank you again for your participation. Be sure to mark your calendars for May 2006.
The British Invasion XV 15 Years and Counting By Jeffrey Aronson
Naturally, the week in September preceding the British Invasion in Stowe, VT, was stunning, warm and dry. Only as the event weekend came near did the rain and fog set in, assuring a celebratory weekend with the requisite British weather. The drive from Maine to Vermont in my ’66 Series II-A 88” started later than I wanted in such miserable weather. When I left work for the 6 hour drive to Stowe, it had at least stopped pouring, such that I could leave the rear window of my soft top rolled up to enjoy the chilly fresh air. I marveled at how dry the interior of the car remained, despite the weather. For two hours I drove in blissful ignorance until I rested by arm over the bulkhead behind Page 6

Dear Rovers North, I am writing on behalf of everyone who attended our 22nd Birthday Party at Silver Lake. We would like to thank you for your generous donations. Your support enabled us to run a successful auction at our event, helping make our club’s premier event a success. As a small token of our appreciation, we would like you to have a wall plaque which displays this year’s commemorative dash plaque. Dear Rovers North, A serious thank you for the fast delivery on my brake parts this week and for always providing great turnaround and exceptional quality. the seats. It was like dipping your hand in a gentle waterfall. Everything, from my sea bag with my clothes to the fluids container in the rear, was quite wet. Naturally, when I discovered this “oops” moment, it began to pour and I had to drive nearly 20 miles further before stopping for gas under a shelter. Then, I could roll down the rear window. Crossing Maine east to west is sort of “Blueberry Hill”; crossing New Hampshire is “Mountain so High, Valley so Low.” By the time I entered the Mt. Washington Valley and the White Mountain National Forest along Rte. 2, the clouds had coalesced and seemed ready to open up with a fine storm – you know, BulwerLytton’s “dark and stormy night.” Just as the dusk turned to dark, I passed by Mt. Adams and witnessed the tightly packed clouds seemingly flowing down the mountainsides. Why do you drive a Land Rover – to witness a sight like that? Yep. The remaining 3 hours of travel, in the fog and mist and rain on two lane roads, became a lot more bearable after that moment. When I bought my Series II-A in late 1990, I had just missed the very first British Invasion in Stowe, Vermont. The entire conceit is a terrific excuse for a car show during the shoulder
[We hope you’re still active with the Yankee Rovers and with entertaining off roading. season between summer resort living and leafpeeping in Vermont. Chris Francis, and ex-pat whose the proprietor of The Olde English Inn in Stowe, wanted to drum up business and drive his collection of British cars around with friends. The word spread to British car clubs
throughout New England and Canada; cleverly, non-automotive goods became available at the huge sale tents so you could assure the nonautomotive spouse or significant other that there would be something else to do over the weekend. You could enter your car in a judged concours, a sales corral, or just in the field along with the other 500-600 cars each year. Stowe knows how to primp itself. Nestled
in a valley alongside the famous mountain, its farms and fields contain classically New England and Victorian buildings. The Mountain Road, VT Route 108, provides a perfect sports car drive of twists and turns. Echoes off the sides of the hills and the mountain provide aural delight. Over the years, the presence of Land Rovers has caused the organizers to “harrumph.” While Jaguar, Austin Healy and Morgan owners wipe the finish wax off their cars and run dental floss to clean out the tire treads, Land Rover owners tended to collect the mud taken off the show cars. For many sports car enthusiasts, Land Rovers were the “Uncle Bucks” of the British car world. They were great for a laugh; few will forget the years of Land Rover polo, trials courses, Rovers North trail rides, or the infamous marque tug of wars with the Mini owners. With the current site used by the Invasion organizers, there’s no room for such minor hooliganism. Still, the BI XV was a delightful weekend. The damp
weather assured a nice pool of mud at the entrance to the field; while MG’s danced around the standing water and muddy paths, the Land Rovers sought them out. Around 50 Land Rovers, from Series I’s – III’s through Range Rover Classics and even a Range Rover Sport [who arranged for that?!], provided the requisite eye-candy to break through the boredom of perfectly restored Triumphs, Singers and Rileys. Wondrous Series I’s, 80” and 86”, were a delight to see. Nigel Manley even had an original tool roll to go with his refurbished, but quite original, Series I. Dermot Harvey brought his wonderfully restored later Series I up from New York state. Paul Tuite, Littleton, NH, packed a military 109” soft top with numerous friends and photos of Queen Elizabeth. Mike Coleman and Sally Fosdick dueled over whose Defender 90 would come east from Maine for the event. Mike’s Defender soft top won a People’s Choice Award last year, so it was Sally’s

turn to drive her Defender 90 SW. Down from Quebec came a couple of Defender 110’s, one claiming to have cosseted Angelina Jolie’s behind during the making of a movie. That seat has yet to be washed, according to the owner. Ian Jackson, also of New Hampshire, brought his stunning 1989 Range Rover Classic; it has high mileage but has clearly received careful maintenance and care. It’s proof that no Range Rover has to deteriorate with age. The Rovers North booth housed the personages of several familiar telephone voices, including Mark Letorney, Shane Westover, Les Parker, Arthur Patsouris and Mike Koch. The Rovers North Discovery Series I looked resplendent, as did Mark Letorney’s spectacular Defender 130 Crew Cab with tilt. They welcomed the chance to meet the Land Rover enthusiasts who make it exciting to have Vermont invaded annually. See you next year! ________ P ________
Michael Coleman and his wife, Sally Fosdick, Topsfield, ME, drove her Defender 90 SW to the British Invasion, rather than his Defender 90 soft top. Robison on Rovers Tips for Winter
Welcome to the Ninth installment of Robison on Rovers in the Rovers North News. Many of you have read my posts on the Rovers North and DiscoWeb bulletin boards, and some have corresponded with me on various topics. For those who don’t know me – I manage J E Robison Service – on the web at www.robisonservice.com – an independent Land Rover specialist shop in Springfield, Massachusetts. I’ve worked continuously with Land Rovers since their re-introduction to North America some fifteen years ago. In my column, I can answer your questions at greater length than is possible on the bulletin boards. Each issue, I will take on a few of the interesting questions I receive or will address a topic of interest to Land Rover owners. I am a longtime Land Rover owner. I’ve had many Land Rovers over the years, and currently have a 2000 Range Rover P38A, a 1996 Discovery I, and a 1966 Series. My father has a 1995 Range Rover Classic, and my brother has a 2003 Discovery II. So we’re a Land Rover family. If you have questions or issues you’d like discussed email: robison@robisonservice.com ________ P ________

Welcome to the fall edition of Robison on Rovers. As I write this the leaves are beginning to turn and the nights are getting cold once again. I know you're hoping for some witticism from me about how this relates to Land Rovers, but it doesn't. For me, fall in New England is always heralded by the country fairs. That's where I've been spending my weekends this August and September. Up near Rovers North, I attended the Champlain Valley Exposition. I saw the Village People and KC and the Sunshine Band in their arena . . . remember them? 1977 on the dance floor once again . . . I also attended the Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck, New York, and saw Roy Clark, from Hee Haw along with a host of other performers. We've got the Tunbridge Worlds Fair, the Big E, the Topsfield Fair, and many others to see. Everyone loves a pig race at the fall fairs. And the ox pulling competition. The sheep shows. And the tractor displays. And the fair food. Check the events area on the Robison Service web site for photos from our fall travels. Last weekend the red Robison Service Discovery made the trip to Stowe for the British Invasion where I can truthfully report that we did not win a single prize. This weekend I'm meeting the Bay State Rovers for the Fall Heritage event near Woodstock, Vermont. Another weekend of off road driving with my fifteen-year-old son. Will he turn it over? Will he sink it in a river? Will he be abducted by aliens? Come back next issue for all the answers . . . In this issue, I'd like to help prepare you to continue to operate your vehicle through the long dark months ahead. It's hard to operate a Land Rover - or any vehicle for that matter - if you're depressed. And it's easy to become depressed when it's cold and dreary all day, and you have to drive to and from work in the dark. Add a few more problems to the mix - laid off from your job, running from the law, feeling sick, bookies pressing you to pay up or else, girlfriend just threw your stuff in the dumpster - well, anyone can get depressed at times like those. What to do? Some people would join the Foreign Legion. Not me, I hike. For the past two summers, I have been walking the trails out here in the Berkshires. I now have snow shoes for winter and I will be continuing this right through the darkest months of winter. Like any other couch potato from the city, I became exhausted just dragging myself up and down a few miles of hills when I started out. But today, I am 25 pounds lighter, much stronger, and I can carry my 40pound pack all day. The health benefits of this are remarkable. My depression lifts. My asthma has largely vanished. I am stronger and fitter. You can be too. Give it a try. Now that you are in a suitable frame of mind to operate a motor vehicle, let's look at some of the things you can do to make sure your motor vehicle operates when you want it to. First, make sure you have good tread on your tires. How much tread is good tread? Well, brand new Land Rover all purpose road tires - such as the Michelin Synchrone - typically have about 1/4 inch of tread depth. Many people say a tire is worn out when 1/8 inch of tread remains. Off-road tires will typically have deeper tread when new. Tires like the BF Goodrich Mud Terrain will have 1/2 inch or more tread when new and will be worn out at 1/4 inch in our experience.

While we are looking at tires, check yours carefully for damage to the sidewalls. Bruises and cuts to the sidewalls can lead to damage that ends with a sudden blowout, and sudden blowouts often mean sudden crashes. Pay particular attention to the right front tire as it hits curbs and potholes more than the other three. Also, slide under the truck and look at the inner sidewalls . . . you can have a tire that looks great from the outside with serious damage on the inside face. Even though the days are still warm, you should be checking your antifreeze protection. The coolant protection should be good to -20 to -30F, even if it doesn't get that cold where you live. Your cooling system works best with the correct mix of coolant and clean water. The mix is spot-on if you are protected to -30. Too strong of an antifreeze concentration reduces cooling system efficiency, as does a weak concentration. So try and have it just right wherever you live. Some Land Rover products use the traditional green antifreeze, while others use the orange colored Dex-cool. Don't mix coolants. Doing so can cause sediments to form and the result could be a clogged radiator. Dex-cool is used in Bosch engine Rovers - the late 1999 and newer P38A and the Discovery II models, as do all Freelanders. The New Range Rover uses AFC coolant, also known as BMW Blue. All older Land Rovers use the traditional green ethylene glycol coolant. Don't let your Rover run low on coolant, because excess air in the system leads to formation of radiatorclogging sediment. That means you should fix leaks if you have them, and keep the system filled to the proper level. There has been a lot of discussion on Internet forums lately regarding the benefits of synthetic air for your Rover's tires. Some people think you need thinner air for winter, just as people use thinner oil for winter. Actually, though, you want less reactive air, not thinner air; in any kind of weather. You may think this is a joke, but it's not. Actually, we are not using "air" at all. We are using
Page 14
nitrogen, a component of air. Nitrogen is a dry, non-reactive gas used to inflate airplane tires, off-road truck tires, military vehicle tires, and race car tires for improved performance. Why? Because the oxygen in air leaks out the tire wall more rapidly than nitrogen. Oxygen also attacks (oxidizes) the rubber compounds in the tire. Dry nitrogen will reduce rubber tire deterioration and prevent auto-ignition of an overheated race car or truck tire. It will help the tire to run cooler and last longer. Nitrogen can be bought in high pressure tanks or it can be made by special compressors. Ask for it the next time you inflate tires. It's tasty. Another favorite topic . . . oil for winter. As regular readers know, I prefer synthetics. Our experience has shown that all but the most whipped and worn-out old Land Rovers will perform well using Mobil 10-40 or 5-30 extended life oil. These oils will do a great job of keeping the inside of the engine clean, aid in cold weather starting, and they will not leak much more than 20-50 synthetics. I suggest you check your battery, and replace it before it strands you. There are two ways to do this. The technical way is to find someone with one of the new electronic battery testers. These testers can accurately determine a battery's condition in a few moments. The second, and more cautious way, is to replace the battery if it's more than three years old. Many Land Rovers have Interstate batteries. All Interstate batteries are marked with a date code, stamped somewhere near the top of the case. It's a 3figure code, like W3A. The middle number - 3 in this case - is the year of manufacture. I suggest replacing any battery that shows a 9, 0, or 1 in this position because it's living on borrowed time. I will close with one more thought - fuel economy. With all the talk of hurricanes and $5/gallon gas prices, there is a lot of interest in reducing fuel costs for Land Rovers. If you have a 1996 or newer Rover, I strongly suggest you continue to buy premium fuel, even though it costs more. Post-1995 Land Rovers that burn regular are a lot more likely to experience stick-
ing or burnt valves. I've seen this time and again in our service department. Saving fifteen cents a gallon is a bad deal if it leads to a $2,500 engine repair. With an older Rover, you can adjust the timing to get slightly better mileage. Newer Rovers have computer controlled timing and there is nothing you can change on them. If you drive on the road, you can improve mileage by increasing the inflation pressure of your tires, and by running the narrowest and tallest road tires possible. Heavy off road tires like the Mud Terrain are about the worst thing possible for fuel economy on the road. You will also improve fuel economy by using light synthetic fluids in the transmission, transfer case, and front and rear axles. Changing from heavy nonsynthetic lubes to lighter synthetics can yield as much as a 1 mpg improvement and your powertrain will last longer. Vehicle load and drag have a big effect on economy. If you have a roof rack - take it off, unless you are using it. If you have a load of heavy tools in back, take them out when you're not actually going to be using them. You will be surprised what a difference that can make. Movie News . . . . Running With Scissors, the movie about our childhood, based upon my brother's best-selling book of the same name, has been finished. Sony Pictures is very pleased with the result, as is my brother. Look for RWS in theatres in 2007. My brother's next book - Possible Side Effects will be released in early 2007. It contains several stories about me and a number of stories about my brother. You can pre-order signed first editions on the Robison Service web site. You'll have to read the book to find out what the stories are about. But I'll tell you this: one of the stories involves a younger me, a department store mannequin, and some seriously bizarre activity; and it does not have a XXX rating. See you next time. ________ P ________

Owner to
Enthusiast by Priscilla Letorney
[Priscilla Letorney lives and works in Rockport Massachusetts. While she’s never worked at Rovers North, she’s been a Land Rover enthusiast since her college days. Read how brother and sister can get along through their Land Rovers –ed] There is a reason that Rovers North refers to its customer base as Land Rover enthusiasts, being an owner is simply not enough. One must appreciate, embrace and truly love their Land Rover. Currently, I am the proud owner of a 2001 Holland & Holland Range Rover, #178 to be exact. This is my third Land Rover, and each one has enhanced my devotion to the point that I now vow to always have at least one in my driveway. I was a junior at UVM when I acquired my first Land Rover. It was a fire engine red Series III 88 that my brother Mark had serviced and felt it was both a reliable and mechanically sound truck. The goal was to purchase a vehicle that would get me from my apartment up to campus, all “social activity” locations, and of course various points of destination in Vermont, regardless of the weather. (True enthusiasts know that Page 20
Land Rovers are the truck equivalent to U.S. Postal Carriers – “neither rain, snow, sleet, hail, etc.”) I quickly grew attached to my Rover as it fearlessly delivered me, and usually several of my friends, anywhere I wanted to go no matter the road conditions or other drivers we encountered en route. Plus, I became the really cool chick with the Land Rover to most of the guys I met at school. I guess they were tired of dating girls who drove either a Saab or a Volvo. When I graduated I decided to move to Washington DC, and determined that my Land Rover was too impractical to be a city vehicle. Not to mention that parking it on the street in a major city was not appealing to me - plus I would be thousands of miles away from Rovers North. Fortunately a friend and fellow classmate of mine who was already the proud owner of a 109” purchased my 88”. Years later at a Rovers North Rally, I saw my previous Series Rover and it had recently survived a beach roll during a hurricane at Marblehead, MA. Approximately nine years later I found myself in possession of a garage-parking pass in downtown
Boston, a perk that came as the result of a job promotion. I had promised myself that once I had a permanent parking space in the city I could start my search for a Range Rover. Six months later I found myself at Rovers North choosing between a green or black short wheelbase Classic. I choose the green one. I felt that living in the North End of Boston (known as the Italian section) and being seen driving an all black Range Rover might give people the wrong impression regarding my “family connections.” I quickly became enamored with my new truck. It got me from Boston to Burlington safely and rather timely during numerous snowstorms, Nor’easters, and such. I also enjoyed driving it off-road and sharpening my skills especially at the British Invasion held in Stowe every September. Two years ago my profession and residence changed, creating a 60 mile round trip commute Monday to Friday. Needless to say, this began to enhance the maintenance schedule of my beloved ‘91 Classic. I put my AAA benefits to work more often than I would like to admit, but after you surpass 100,000 miles you should expect to have to replace some major components. I consider myself very fortu-
nate because I followed my brother Mark’s advice and converted all fluids to synthetic, installed the NRP stainless steel exhaust system, replaced all engine hoses when the transmission hose went, and basically became pro-active regarding the truck maintenance. My plan of action was working; however my vehicle had reached 163,000 miles, gas prices began to increase steadily, and its effect on the balance in my bank account – well no need to elaborate on that. Here is where the enthusiasm takes control of the situation. After confirming with my brother Mark that the Classic needs to become a full-time recreational vehicle, I of course start my search for guess what? Another Land Rover! For me looking at other brands of automobiles or trucks was not even considered as an option. My loyalty, appreciation, and enthusiasm as a Land Rover owner grew stronger with every rainstorm, foggy day, snowstorm, and travel on certain Vermont roads during mud season. Why would a true New Englander drive anything else? The LR3 was out in the US market and I had decided to test drive one. My plan also included looking at used Range Rovers. I had met both the Sales Manager and General Manager of Land Rover Peabody here in MA, so I decided to contact them regarding the LR3 and what they had in stock for pre-owned certified Range Rovers. Before actually calling the dealership, I went on their website and noticed their inventory list included a 2001 Holland & Holland. This listing raised my eyebrows. I remembered when Land Rover introduced this special edition truck, and that it featured several options not standard on other Range Rovers, which was very appealing to me. I called and scheduled my appointment. The LR3 is a pristine, state of the art vehicle and certainly exemplifies the quality of Land Rover engineering and design however, not enough to dissuade me from the Holland & Holland. I immediately felt at home in the driver’s seat of this Range Rover and determined I had found my new British 4 X 4. When I asked who would trade in such a marvelous vehicle, the response I got was, “he purchased a brand new one.” If I had an extra $80,000 to spend I would too! The photos accompanying this article display the unique color, interior, and overall style of this particular Rover. I am extremely pleased with my Rover #3, and really enjoy the ride provided by the air suspension. The navigation system is very accurate. I have used my rear fog lamps often while driving through my coastal town, and I am prepared to keep Rover until it expires. Several weeks ago I was driving on 93 northbound (in the left lane of course exercising that 4.6HSE engine), and as I gazed over to the southbound traffic, there it was a jet black and very sleek Range Rover Sport. I have discovered my Rover #4. ________ P ________

Robison Tech Tips Fault Codes by John Robison
Well, here I am back again, a few pages later. If you didn't get enough in the first column back there in the beginning, you'll surely get your fill in this one. In this column I'm going to discuss some common sets of fault codes you may encounter in newer Land Rovers and what to do about them. The codes we are going to discuss below are found on 1999 and newer Bosch engine Rovers. Misfires: P0301 (misfire in cyl 1), P306 (misfire in cyl 6) . . . and other combinations of two-cylinder misfires. The Bosch engine has two coil packs. Each pack has two coils, each of which fires two cylinders. If you have two cylinders misfiring, you should always look to see if the misfiring cylinders share a coil. If so, you probably have a coil that is breaking down internally while under load. It will measure good but it will set misfires and you may even feel the engine stumbling. Coil pack failure is often a result of coil wires that go bad (open circuit) or wires that fall off the plug. This causes an excess voltage in the coil and the insulation gets blown out. The solution is a new coil and often new wires. Replacement of the coils on a Bosch motor is a fairly big job, as is replacement of the wires. Plan on 3-4 hours for this job. Remember - you will always have two cylinders (on the same coil winding) missing when a coil pack fails. If you have two misfires and they are on a single coil, you are almost certain to have a bad coil. If you have two misfires and they are on different coils, you should look at the plugs and wires first, and sticking valves second. A single cylinder misfire code usually points to a bad plug wire or plug. Remember, the Bosch engines use special Champion platinum plugs. I suggest you stick with these OEM plugs, despite their high costs. We have not had good results with "generic" platinum plugs in these engines.
good, I'd start with a mechanical test for sticking valves if 3 or more misfire codes are found. Fuel trim: Here's another common combination of codes: P0171 (system too lean bank A), P0174 (system too lean bank B). P0734 (4th gear ratio monitoring) What does that combination mean? Usually, it means the mass air meter has failed. The air meter signals that less air is coming into the engine than is really there. As a result, the engine ECU cuts back on fuel, and the o2 sensors go to a lean condition, which sets the 171 and 174 faults. As to fault 734 the powertrain controller compares the air it thinks is coming into the engine with the measured shaft speeds in the gearbox, and with a faulty mass air meter it will find the transmission shaft speeds do not match the predicted speed based upon how much air the engine is supposedly sucking in. Thus, the transmission gear monitor fault is set. This combination of three codes is highly accurate in diagnosing a failed mass air meter. Oxygen sensor and catalyst codes: There are a number of oxygen sensor codes you can get on newer vehicles. Heater circuit faults usually mean the wiring from the o2 sensor into the body has been melted and damaged by contact with the exhaust. O2 sensor stuck lean usually means the engine is lean for some reason - such as a bad air meter, a dead injector, or a vacuum leak. O2 sensor stuck rich usually means the engine is stuck rich for some reason - such as an ignition misfire, a leaky injector, or a sticky valve. Note that the rich and lean faults may occur on both sides of the motor at once, or they may be limited
Three or more misfires usually points to sticking valves, unless you have extreme deterioration of the plug wires or very old plugs. If the plugs and wires are
to one side. Faults on both sides point to things like the mass air sensor - parts that affect both sides at once. Faults that are on one side, tend to point at
RND290 02 Sensor pg 29
injectors or plugs single cylinder malfunctions. O2 sensor slow switching usually means the sensor has worn out. If you have this code on one sensor, and the sensors are all original, you should replace all 4 because they are at the end of their service life. Catalyst efficiency faults mean the catalyst is worn out. In one of my previous columns, I explained how Land Rover engines switch constantly from rich to lean to achieve an average mixture that's in perfect balance. The rich/lean switching is necessary for proper operation of the catalysts. In a working system, the front o2 sensors will be sensing rich/lean transitions. The rear o2 sensors should be coasting along in the midrange because the catalyst smooths out the transitions. But when the catalyst wears out, the rear o2 sensors begins to follow the front sensors. This increased following of the front sensor, increments a counter in the engine ecu, and when a threshold is crossed, the check engine light comes on and a catalyst efficiency fault is recorded. When this happens, a new catalyst is needed, and I suggest installing new o2 sensors at the same time. In the next issue we will look at evaporative emission codes and other trouble spots with Bosch motors. I'm going to close this column with a short essay on a different by timely subject. Should you sell your Rover if gas costs $5 a gallon? It's a valid question, and for many of us the answer is probably still no. Here's why: If your Rover gets 15 miles per gallon, and you drive 15,000 miles a year, fuel for a year could cost $5,000. Driving a Prius will cut that bill to $1,500 - a $3,500 per year savings. But trading cars will come at a steep price. Recent auction results suggest that - if gas surges to $5 in the near future - trading a 2003 Discovery with 45,000 miles for a new Prius will cost $16,000-$20,000. So it will take a while for you to achieve a net savings. History suggests that four years from now the Prius will have a value in the mid-teens, where your Discovery would be worth less than half that sum. So, when we factor in that difference in value, the financial breakeven point moves a bit closer. But there is a big non-financial consideration. Land Rovers, for many of us, offer a way of life. Driving in off-road events, taking our families into the high country, carrying us safely though dangerous winter storms and wading two-foot deep floodwaters. A Prius won't do any of those things. And many Discoveries are fitted with 7-passenger seating and driven by parents with 4 kids in the back. A Prius won't do that either. Also, in an accident between a Prius and a Land Rover, the Rover is the clear winner. Granted, a Prius is better able to avoid certain kinds of accidents. It is less likely to roll over in high speed maneuvering, and it is more nimble and able to get out of the way. But its lighter construction makes it unclear, at least to me, which vehicle is safer overall. Personally, I feel more secure in my Rover and I suspect many of you do, too. If gas gets to five dollars a gallon, I may get a small car for commuting. But I will certainly be keeping my Rover for the lifestyle reasons listed above. It's something to ponder as we wait for hurricane news. See you next time.

Commenting on the Range Rover Sport, 4x4 Magazine's judges said: "There could only be one winner, because there was only one car that filled our enthusiast senses with its unbelievable blend of charismatic off-road ability and breathtaking on-road performance. A superb technically advanced machine, packing enough practicality to serve as a genuine family sports-tourer, but one that the true high-performance driving enthusiast will enjoy beyond measure." The 'Extreme' category was won by the Defender 90 County XS that defeated the Jeep Wrangler, Ricardo Ibex and Santana PS10, thanks to standard equipment such as the coveted TD5 engine with two-speed transfer box and permanent four-wheeldrive through a lockable centre differential. Land Rover UK managing director, Phil Popham, added: "This is another prestigious title for the Range Rover Sport and a well-deserved victory for the Defender, which proves it is still a peerless off-road icon. We know only too well the rigours our products are put through by the judges at 4x4 Magazine, so to come away with three awards is truly a remarkable achievement." Both the Defender and Range Rover Sport ranges are available now from Land Rover dealerships across the UK, from £17,995 and £35,000 respectively. (Land Rover Media) Page 26
Behind The Steering Wheel
By Jeffrey Aronson In 1948, the Three Stooges made a film called “Pardon My Clutch,” in which the boys try to get an old car running. It reappeared as “Wham, Bam, Slam”
“Pardon My CLutch” 1958
in 1958. Last August, Peter Jenny, Sheridan, WY, Jacques Jenny, Middlebury, VT, Nick Barton, Washington, ME, and yours truly, Vinalhaven, ME, portrayed Moe, Larry, Curly and Shemp in our unintentional remake of the film. In our Three Stooges moment, Nick [Shemp] and I [Moe] watched Jacques’ [Curly] Series II start up with a cloud of black smoke out of the exhaust. “Ah,” said Moe knowingly, “We know what to do. Must be a Zenith with a warped carb body!” Shemp looked skeptical. “Do you know what you’re talking about?” Moe grimaced at him and barked, “You bet, knucklehead. Get in the Rover.” So Pete [Larry] and Jacques [Curly] followed Moe’s Series II-A down the lanes in their Series II until they arrived at Moe’s house. “Just park the car right in the middle of the lane,” said Moe. “This won’t take a minute. Gimme my tools, Shemp. I’ll pop open the hood and smooth out the carb.” Moe opened the hood against his nose and nearly dropped it on his head before he figured out how to work the hood brace. Shemp looked at the carb. “It don’t look like a Zenith.” “Soitainly not,” said Curley, “It’s a Weber!” Moe grimaced, “there goes that theory.” Moe rubbed the wrench in his hand thoughtfully against his head, leaving a black shiny stripe of old motor oil. “How does a Weber, which runs lean, toss out a cloud of black smoke as if Curly was cookin’ dinner?” Adjusting the mixture screw really didn’t change anything. The car ran rough at idle and sounded at once starved and flooded for fuel. “Ah, ah,” cried Moe, “it’s not the carb at all!” “It’s not?” said Larry.“No, it’s gots to be in the ignition somewhere. Let me disassemble the distributor and
reset the timing.” He turned to Shemp. “Get me my tools, and make it quick.” Shemp looked skeptical. “Do you know what you’re doing?” He dropped the toolbox on Moe’s foot. As Moe hollered, Shemp spent a lot of time looking at his watch and announcing how he had to leave for an appointment real soon – an appointment hours ahead. “Let’s check the timing,” cried Moe! “Shouldn’t we check the points, first?” asked Curly, showing off to Larry that he really did take physics at Middlebury last year. “OK, OK,” said Moe, “but make it snappy. We haven’t got all day.” “Larry, you take this here crank and turn the engine so it opens the points. I’ll tell you when to stop cranking.” Moe unclipped the cap and removed the rotor. “Here,” he said to Shemp, put these where we won’t lose them.” Shemp put them on the fender. Larry bent under the car to insert the crank and he started to turn it, inch by inch, step by step. Moe rested his foot on Larry’s head as he leaned over the distributor. Each time the engine made a full revolution, the lobes on the distributor cam pressed against the points, but they hardly moved at all. “Hey, knucklehead, didn’t I say to turn the crank!” “Moe,” protested Larry, “I’m turning, I’m turning. How many times am I supposed to do this?” “Until the points open, you dummy!” Moe peered at the points again while Larry turned the crank, getting more and more tired. Suddenly Moe realized the points weren’t opening at all. He took a feeler gauge to the points and could barely get a .004 blade in between them. “Hey,” said Moe, rearranging the motor oil in his hair, “what’s going on, here? Moe took the points plate off the distributor, handing the tiny screws to Larry. “Don’t lose these,” he said. He stepped off the front bumper. Moe looked hard at the set of points and compared them to an old set he had in the toolbox. “Curly, where did you get this set of points,” asked Moe?” “NAPA. Why?” “They’re not the right ones, dummy.” He dug out a new set he had bought years ago from Rovers North. “Look at the difference!” Sure enough, the two sets were not identical at all. Both were red in color but had different shapes in their metal plates. So Moe went to put the new set on the car.
“Pardon My CLutch” 1958
He looked at Larry, leaning on his elbow against the fender. “Do something useful. Hand me the screws and the other pieces,” ordered Moe. “You mean the ones I just knocked on the ground with my elbow?” asked Larry. Knocking their heads together, Moe, Larry, Curly and Shemp bent down to pick up the distributor parts and screws. They found most of the items and retrieved replacements from Moe’s toolbox. But in what order were the ground wire, condenser wire and insulating washers to go back onto the post? And why was the NAPA post plastic and the Lucas post metal? What did that mean in terms of grounding? Larry gazed at the clear sky in the setting sun. “What a great day for a repair,” he said. “Usually it’s raining, snowy or cold when something breaks down. This is great!” First Moe, then Curly, insisted they knew the right order, but in neither case would the car start. Well, once it wouldn’t start because Moe hadn’t put the rotor back on the distributor shaft, but it didn’t seem to matter what the boys did to the distributor parts. The car did not sound as though it was getting a spark at the points. Again, Larry gazed at the clear sky in the setting sun. “What a great day for a repair,” he said. “Usually it’s raining, snowy or cold when something breaks down. This is great!” Suddenly, a car full of self-important people drove up and found Curly’s Rover blocking the lane to their expensive summer rental. Larry guided them expertly right onto a rock which grounded out the frame of their fancy car. The driver made a face at Larry, who returned the look and said, “Aw, go on!” Now Shemp has become really nervous about getting a ride to his appointment; Curly’s dead Rover is blocking Moe’s Rover, so Shemp has to borrow a third car to flee the scene. Moe knew a trick. If he turned the ignition switch to “on” on his Rover, then he could get a spark at the points. Why don’t we do the same on Curly’s car? So out came a screwdriver, and Curly turned the ignition key. Moe opened the points gently, puts the screwdriver across the points, but no spark. They pondered that question for a while and wondered it the coil wire was functioning. They swapped out coil wires, but to no avail. Suddenly, Curly asks, “why don’t I have any warning lights on when I turn the key to on?” Moe scoffs, “Curly, what do you know,” and continued to move a screwdriver around the points, searching for a spark. Suddenly, one appears. “Hey,” cried Curly, “the warning lights went on!” Curly starts the car and it runs so, so smooth. Moe adjusts the mixture and the idle and the car hums. Once again, Larry gazed at the clear sky in the setting sun. “What a great day for a repair,” he said. “Usually it’s raining, snowy or cold when something breaks down. This is great!” Moe and Curly go for a quick test drive; Curly confirms the car runs better than ever. “How long have you had those NAPA points,” asked Moe? “7 or 8 months,” said Curly. “The car hasn’t run that well for a while.” “You know,” said Larry, “that’s the trouble with Land Rovers. They run really well when they’re actually running poorly. Go figure!” Once again, the boys had stretched a 15 minute short into a full length movie of slapstick mechanics. Patting each other on the back, Moe watched as Larry and Curly took off down the road. Only the following Page 27

day did Moe learn that the ignition had shorted out only a half mile later and caused a minor fire behind the fascia panel. The boys could get home only by taping a power wire together for the remaining distance. If any Land Rover shops [are you reading this, Robison, East Coast Rover, Cooper Technica, Ship’s mechanical?] are looking for skilled mechanics, we’re available. In the meantime our next remake will be of “Flat Foot Stooges” [1938] in which the boys are firemen. Catch it at a theater near you.

No matter what your age, you’ll always remember your first car. On my 16th birthday, I believed that it might be possible for me to will my father into purchasing an Austin Healey for me. When I woke up that morning, he handed me a set of keys but to the family’s Buick Special, not a car of my own. That did not happen until two years and $150 later, when I purchased the rustiest Ford Skyliner you could and still have an inspection sticker. A couple of years later I had saved $400 and bought my Morris Minor. Stretching my financial skills further enabled me to buy a $600 Triumph Spitfire; you can imagine the automotive quality embodied in a $600 British sports car. Since 2001, I’ve worked around rural high
schools in Maine, and even there, student cars aren’t the junkers that populated school parking lots decades ago. The New York Times cites a national survey highlighted this trend. Parents in their 40’s reported that 72% of them had to purchase their own car – if they had one at all - with their own funds when they were students. Not surprisingly, 76% of today’s students have their own cars but a whopping 51% had their cars purchased for them by their parents. While 82% of the students’ cars were used cars, nearly half cost more than $10,000. Yes, cars cost a lot more today but that chunk of change still represents a substantial automobile. Much of this generosity arises out of genuine concerns for the safety of young drivers by their parents and families. We so expect that cars will cocoon us and shelter us from our worst impulses that we seek to make the car cover for our driving errors. Brian O’Neill, speaking for the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, bluntly claimed “when you’re 16 or 17, there’s no such thing as a good driver. They’re all bad drivers waiting for an accident to happen.” The average vehicle now remains on the road for 15 years, or 170,000 miles. Given the popularity of Land Rovers in the ‘90’s and 00’s, there’s lots of opportunity for young drivers to climb aboard an SUV.
Can they be safe in the hands of younger drivers? Logically, of course they can, provided that the new driver receives skilled training in techniques required for an SUV, and providing that the necessary maintenance to the car have been completed. Range Rover Classics and Discovery Series I’s rely on suspension bushings at several points for responsive handling. Good springs, strong shocks and quality tires also enhance handling. Often, though, older, high mileage cars don’t receive this maintenance and attention – no wonder that, in unskilled hands, they’re less safe than comparable sedans. When I bought my first [very] used sports cars in the ‘60’s, I knew them to be less intrinsically safe than larger cars. I also knew that their handling, size and light weight could work to my advantage for safety if I used it wisely. The same held true when I bought my Series II-A in 1990; that [very] used car required me, on road and off road, to become a more highly skilled driver. Training, in the form of the Rovers North Off Road School, helped me enormously, as did the practical advice from experienced off road friends. Young drivers can learn a great deal from owning a Land Rover, about themselves as drivers, technicians, adventurers and young adults. Learning about your capabilities is just one of the many pleasures of Land Rover enthusiasm.

Greenpeace activists in England had a satisfying time breaking into the Solihull factory to protest the manufacture of Range Rovers. Their outrage was expressed against people who purchase these “climate destructive cars.” If you’re upset with the Range Rover, consider the 2006 Hummer lineup. The H1 weighs in a 7,558 pounds and $139,771 purchase price. At its porky size, the EPA considers it too heavy to require a mileage rating, but it’s estimated generously at 10 mpg. Its twin fuel tanks, totaling 50 gallons, call for a mere $150 for a fillup. Auto reviewer Jerry Garrett called the H1 a “rolling zip code. Everyone sits in a personal cubicle, isolated from fellow travelers by a center console as wide and long as a New Mexico mesa. Communicating requires shouting over the engine and road noise. Once, while driving an H1, I used my cellphone to call my daughter. She was in the back seat.” Oh, if you want the “Off Road Adventure Package,” that will be an additional $5,700, please. For that, you get a 12,000 –pound winch, front and rear locking differentials, and better tires. Would something smaller help? The $52,430 H2 is a svelte 6,400 pounds and ekes out 12 mpg. It’s useful for onroading in front of dance clubs in trashy locales. GM, following the lead of the late, unlamented British Leyland, has badge-engineered a pickup into the H3. Helpfully, driving the H3 offroad means that you can’t see the ends of the car, or determine the wheel paths, without a backup camera – which is not an optional extra. With 220 horsepower lugging around 4,700 pounds, the H3 achieves 18 mpg and starts at $37,195. It seats 5, but only 4 in comfort. Oh, yes, the 2006 Range Rover starts at $74, 950; the Range Rover Sport begins at $56,750, and the LR3 starts at $38,950. They’re ready to go off road stock. ________ P ________

Still Feuding After all These Years [Hallie and Nate Vail, a college student in Massachusetts and a recent graduate, respectively, benefited from a wonderful upbringing from their father, Bob, a Land Rover buff of the highest order. But, being brother and sister, they still can’t disagree on much except their love of Land Rovers. Read on and see where you stand –ed.] Hallie Vail
I’m fond of looking back and recalling the first moment the Land Rover infection seeped into the veins of the Vail’s. After a good deal of persuasion from a family friend, my father looked into buying an old series Rover. In the mid 1990’s I recall finding myself in someone’s garage looking at what used to be a series 88” Land Rover. At the time, I couldn’t tell if I was looking at a car or a glorified lawn mower. There wasn’t much left of it, but my father was enthusiastic enough to take the wreck. It surprisingly ran as it was, yet the frame was completely rusted out and most every part needed repair. After months, well I shouldn’t lie, years had gone by my father got it road-worthy. With a new light tan paint job (done by hand, I should say) and a new frame, we tested its reputation. Trips to Rangeley became more frequent and exhilarating. Our rustic truck not only took us places we’d never been, it also brought the curse of the infection alive. We now know you can’t make it there from here in one piece. I can’t recall all the problems we’ve faced, but everything from water pump failure to engine problems have struck us along the way. Now, almost 10 years later, it’s sickening how many Rovers accompany our home. While several are wrecked and abused Nate and I are able to gloat about our own Landys. His ‘96 discovery and my ‘93 Range Rover get us from point A to B, and also turn some heads while getting there; though I must explain to you that owning a Range Rover has its perks over the Discovery. My first Rover came along a few weeks before winter romp in ‘04. My father ran into it on the side of the road for sale. They say that it took a bad tank of gas and the injectors seized. Though it seemed a regrettable buy, my ingenious father (brownie points) was able to have it up and running by the time I arrived home for summer. Shortly thereafter, the black ’92 Range Rover was outfitted with a lift from BWOverland and Trxus tires. Nate’s green Disco had yet to become a part of the family at this point, so I made sure to rev my engine loud enough when he’d Page 32

Allow me to discuss why we own (and hopefully drive) Land Rovers and why my Disco I is superior to her Range Rover Classic(s). I love Land Rovers. I have since I knowingly saw my first when I was a wee lad of about thirteen. My dad ended up buying that same ole ’73 and still owns it to this day. He gave it to me for a daily driver in high school and it’s now currently retired, torn down to the frame, yielding a few parts to dad’s red 109 which you may have seen at events over the past five years. There has been some ongoing Land Rover project at the Vail e

walk by or park in the way of our front door to make it known what I drove; brother-sister love must be shown at all times you know. Much to my dismay, a few weeks past and he was graced with a clean Disco. I quickly had to size up our trucks. While at this point in time I could make a clear decision on who had the better truck, it’s much simpler now; now that I have two Range Rovers to pick from. I hate to admit it, but the black beauty just wouldn’t make the trips to and from school. The engine has yet to make a full recovery from being in the dumps and unending oil leaks lessen the chances of successful highway driving. I felt useless this past Maine Winter Romp when my father had to radio in to me on a constant basis to make sure my Rangie could keep up with his Series 109” [!] on the highway. While Nate’s Disco is a few years younger, my white Classic out-handles his on the highway. The Range Rover eases past 75 mph [hypothetically speaking, of course] while his begins to feel as though it may fall off its frame. The Range Rover also isn’t as top heavy and making abrupt turns is a possibility even with a lift. In the early 1990’s Range Rover understood luxury. While mine is quite bare compared to the technology there is in recent years, the seats hug your body and give you perfect relaxed posture. The Disco, on the other, hand strains your lower back and constantly pushes your head forward. The Range Rover is made to loosen up the driver while a Discovery tends to have the traditional uncomfortable Land Rover approach to the interior. Though the interior and handling of the Range Rover may outdo the Discovery, I must say I cannot speak too badly of a fellow Land Rover. Off road, both have great capabilities and have equal low range power. I’m grateful Nate and I are able to own two strong Land Rovers which maneuver excellently off road. I feel I was careful enough not to bash him too hard, he is the older sibling and I still get in trouble if I tease or ridicule his ways.
residence for the past decade. But, I’m willing to bet a healthy number of you readers have had various Land Rover projects going on even longer. Most of us owners can agree: if you got the money you ain’t got the time, if you got the time you ain’t got the money. So what makes a Land Rover so great, why drive an old Rover when you can buy a two door foreign spec, saving money on gas and driving 200,000 miles without a problem? Hah, what a stupid question! A Land Rover is a unique commodity that has a rich heritage. I drive one because they turn heads. It’s a vehicle to take pride in. You’ve got to stand out in the sea of mediocrity. Most importantly, a Land Rover is the most versatile vehicle on the planet! I am convinced that I have worked my Land Rover Discovery to be the vehicle to best suit me, my lifestyle, and my limited recent college grad budget. We’ll start from the top. The buildup of my ’96 Discovery started out primitive in the summer of ’04. For starters, the foot wells had rust holes the size of footballs and the previous owner had enough extra dead-end audio wiring to power my old townhouse at college. After welding patches, tracing wires, and cleaning up the truck, it was time to add some more pleasurable modifications. The current up to date mods worth mentioning consist of a three inch lift, 33 inch Swampers, Safety Devices, roof rack, ARB front bumper, and a Flowmaster catback exhaust (I’m still trying to steal one of my dad’s winches – please don’t print this!). I like my Disco better than my sister’s two Classics because I’ve got the best of both worlds, civilization and wilderness, with just one Rover. My truck can handle tough trails and can handle lengthy trips on the pavement. Believe me I’ve tested her out on many long rides. I went to college four hours away in Vermont. My girlfriend lives three hours away in Massachusetts. I broke down only twice in the past year; I call that successful for a high mile daily driver Rover. My sister informs you all that my truck can’t handle on the highway, I think her experience is a result of the operator, not the machine. Big brothers know more, anyway. Let’s move on to some other perks from driving my Disco. I’m a type of person who likes to keep things under my control. That’s why I’ve got an R380 5-speed manual transmission. I do believe that the Classic never gave that option for NAS trucks. Although nearly bulletproof, I think the automatic ZF shifts too early. My sister hates to admit, but as a likely result of early shifting, I blew her road Rangie off the line at the New Hampshire Hampton tolls. In addition, I’ve got seating for seven people, with A/C vents for every seat! Last fall at school I took six of my buddies on a set of dirt bike trails, since the Rover was narrow enough to navigate it. As you all know, from time to time you get temporarily stuck. With the assistance of my six passengers, they’re able to push me out of an obstacle with ease. And finally, for my last perk, the back seat has plenty of headroom. I’m very pleased with my Disco. It looks real sharp and sounds real mean. Granted, I do like Hallie’s Rangies, whenever I need to travel to Boston I borrow her “Road Rover” so I can actually fit in a parking garage (one drawback to adding on my SD roof rack). At any rate, I wouldn’t trade my Disco for either of her two Classics. It’s all about outfitting your own vehicle to your own needs. [Note – the Editor calls this battle a tie.]

POCKET-SIZED ADVENTURE FROM LAND ROVER
Land Rover Headquarters, Gaydon, 3 August 2005 – Land Rover this week launches an initiative that allows budding adventurers of all ages to have on and off-road fun, wherever they go, with a mobile telephone game called Range Rover Sport Tourer. The company is making its entry into the world of mobile communications and entertainment in partnership with Blue Sphere Games Ltd, the company behind Java™ mobile telephone games and services. Range Rover Sport Tourer, the first product of this partnership, is now available through selected network operators. Phil Popham, Land Rover UK managing director commented: “The Range Rover Sport is the best-performing and best-handling vehicle that Land Rover has ever built. We call it a ‘Sports Tourer’ – reflecting its ability to effortlessly cover long journeys quickly and comfortably, yet with exhilarating performance. This new game demonstrates these skills in a fun and accessible format, and quite literally illustrates our ‘go-anywhere’ attributes.” In playing Range Rover Sport Tourer the mobile user drives the Range Rover Sport Supercharged on a grand tour of some of the world’s most famous and remote landmarks, including Uluru in Australia and Mount Rushmore in the USA. The race is against the clock to reach the end of the tour quickly and without getting lost. Valuable points are also available for photographs taken on each trip, together with the other point-scoring factor – vehicles overtaken. David Bozward, Chairman of Blue Sphere Games Ltd says: “The alliance with Land Rover is a great collaboration for Blue Sphere Games. We will create a complete portfolio of Land Rover titles for our distribution partners worldwide and we are looking forward to bringing the Land Rover adventure brand to mobile users everywhere.” The Range Rover Sport Tourer game is available to download via selected mobile phone networks and other specialist outlets. Download charges may vary according to each network. (Land Rover Media)

The “Go Anywhere Vehicle” by Matt Michaels
My wife's family has lived in Jefferson Parish and Southeast Louisiana since the turn of the century – having immigrated from Italy (a few via Honduras). As Hurricane Katrina barreled toward the New Orleans area and it appeared the doomsday scenario was going to play out, my wife's grandparents, aunts, and other assorted relatives migrated to Baton Rouge and other locales north. Luckily they were all able to get out, prior to the Hurricane hitting the coast. After Katrina swept through we were relieved that none of the levies had broken on the Jefferson Parish side (they live 7 blocks from Lake Pontchatrain), although one relative was to the East of the 17th street
canal and her house was more or less under-water. We were trying to get as much information about her grandparent's house in Metairie as possible, but we quickly learned that the news was unable to provide accurate/timely information, the Jefferson Parish Office of Emergency Management changed their stories every 15 minutes. Soon afterwards, we were able to access some satellite photos and were able to see that all of the trees were blown down in the front yard, the canal on their street was at normal levels. The only sign of flooding was the reflection from the mud in the streets. At about that time, we decided we were going to get into Jefferson Parish to salvage what we could, and begin the process of cleaning out. Again, the news was reporting no one could get into Jefferson Parish, no one was allowed, it wasn't safe, we would be considered looters, etc. At 86, my wife's grandparents were
in no shape to start rebuilding – so the decision was made Monday September 5th to get into Metairie. My Father-in-Law and I loaded up the Defender (chainsaws, gasoline, recovery gear, potable water, tools, and a generator), got our immunizations updated, and headed out. The drive to Baton Rouge was uneventful, we passed several military convoys from Ft. Hood (the Defender was much faster than fully loaded Humvees). The mounting recovery effort was a sight to see. In spite of the news reporting the gasoline shortages in Baton Rouge we were able to fill up, and still saw gas stations with fuel along Airline Highway between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. As we approached the parish you could start to smell the city (and this was definitely not the Mardi Gras/French Quarter smell so many are familiar with). We had heard that there were checkpoints along the route and they would only allow residents into Jefferson parish. Since we had the insurance papers on the property in our name we figured it would be good enough to talk our way into the parish. As we drove in just south of the airport you could start to see the damage. There was an empty checkpoint behind the airport, and we continued into Jefferson Parish unencumbered. There were downed power lines and trees everywhere, but after some successful negotiating we were able to get back to the house. Once at the house, we noticed the flooding had only gotten to about 2 feet at the deepest. Either way, 18 inches or 6 feet still ruins everything. In our four days there we ripped out carpet, removed all of the furniture, knocked holes in the sheetrock, sprayed bleach everywhere, and removed and buried the food from 5 refrigerators and freezers. Although the water was not potable, we figured it was a good idea to rinse off each night after hauling rotten food, sewage laden carpets, and the like. I have to say the experience of showering with my father-in-law in the driveway and waving to the crew chief of a Navy helicopter as he passed just overhead was unforgettable. I really would have appreciated a little more privacy! Each night we locked up and slept, there was no activity on what is a normally very busy part of town. In fact, during the day most of the activity was military search and rescue missions flying overhead. If I didn't know better, I thought we were on post. My Father-in-law said it reminded him of his time in Vietnam. Finally, on Thursday we headed back after 3 nights and four full days of working.
I have a few things I learned on this trip:
1)
2) 3) Page 34
If you ever evacuate – clean out your freezers and refrigerators. Burying containers of cottage cheese that look like they are about to pop is enough to trip up just about anyone's constitution Water ruins everything – the mold was already 4 feet up the walls when we arrived The Caldwell's recovery shovel is great for digging pits
4) Honda Generators are very reliable 5) The media focuses on very narrow pictures, so very few people get the entire story. While there were gas shortages, checkpoints, and looting – we never encountered any of these hazards. Our motto became “I won't believe it unless I see it with my own eyes". 6) The Defender really can go anywhere Of all the ironies, my mother just evacuated her home in Clear Lake due to the approach of Hurricane Rita. She dutifully cleaned out her refrigerator and freezer, and I decided to go off-roading to get out of the house for a few hours the Friday before landfall. Since we are 50 miles inland, we would only expect wind-damage and possibly some street flooding. Fortunately, Rita seems to be veering farther and farther East, putting us on the clean side of the Hurricane. Whether it hits or not, I know I have the appropriate 'Go Anywhere" vehicle. Thanks for all the parts, accessories, and friendly staff. '97 NAS D90 SW #2143 (I think) ________ P ________

From Iceland to a full restoration by Joe Coleman
[Joe Coleman tells us a brief history of how he got interested in Land Rovers, and what he is up to now -ed.] My first experience with a Land Rover was during an April trip to Iceland. My friends and I rented an 88 because we wanted to drive toward the interior of the country and the only paved roads were within the Reykjavik city limits. Beyond the large waterfall, Gullfoss, we tried to drive toward a glacier in the distance, but got stuck in a field of snow that was lying in a low, shady area. The Rover frame rested on the snow as the wheels spun. With only an empty peanut butter jar to dig with, it took a long time to get the car out. The 1964 109 Station Wagon that I bought many years later needed to be towed home. We fabricated some outriggers that supported the rear springs and used high-strength rivets to fasten them to the chassis and added new brake components. Even though most Philadelphia snow storms are 3 inches and melt the next day, the Iceland incident led me to pick deep-lugged snow tires for my Rover. It ran reliably for about six years until the back half of the frame got too rusty. I started disassembling the Rover outside in my yard, as I was used to preparing my Formula Ford race car outside at the track day or nighttime for SCCA events. Along with a new frame, the rusty bits that needed replacing were the door posts and footwells. The engine had a large ridge in the cylinder and the crankshaft was worn necessitating a full rebuild. With exception of having to grind or cut off hardware, the process has been going well.

The restoration of a family member by Jeff Poyner
[Jeff Poyner of Olypmia Washington, talks about how he, and his three boys are starting to restore a Series III -ed.] Here is a brief description of the Series III (named Suzy), we purchased in Vancouver Canada two years ago. We drove it back to our home in OLYMPIA WASHINGTON. That was another story! My wife Suzanne and our three boys Zach, Ian, and Andrew have adopted this truck into the family, as
has the rest of the neighborhood. The site of the old Rover coming down the street with the spare tire on the hood has got a lot of attention the past two years. Especially at Christmas time, when the we go out to get the tree; as with most people who have never seen a Land Rover before, no its not a Jeep! But the years have taken the usual toll on Suzy, and the wear and tear have become too much. So the boys and I have started a restoration project. We have started the tear down project which will include the replacement of the frame, leaf springs, bulkhead, footwell, and all the usual bits and pieces that it will take to rebuild the lower end of the Land Rover. Fortunately some of the components were replaced before we purchased the truck. However, even these will be looked over very carefully before reassembly begins.
We found a set of plans on line to build a sand blasting cabinet, this way we can clean all disassembled parts of any rust as the rebuild continues. Labor day weekend was just that, a labor day. We disassembled the entire truck and power washed and degreased each piece. That was a very long process as you can imagine. At this point, all bolts, nuts and screws have been bagged and tagged, as each system has been removed from the truck in systematic order. As I explained to the boys it will be a long winter of restoration, and the memory may fade so we are keeping track of all parts. Nothing will go back on until it has been repaired, replaced, painted and reassembled. So here are a few pictures of our Suzy, the Series III Land Rover as we have begun the process. ________ P ________

Rovers North Sponsors local athlete [Colin Rodgers, born and raised in Westford, Vermont, is an Olympic hopeful who is based out of Caribou, Maine. He competes for the Maine Winter Sports Center and Team FSx. Team FSx is small group of young elite skiers just below the US Ski Team striving for international greatness. They are supported by Fischer and Swix. Rovers North is proud to sponsor Colin, and wishes him the best of luck in his upcoming season. The following is an article written by Colin Rodgers -ed.] I wake immediately. Eyes open, body alert, ready to go. It is 3:55 AM on Fourth of July weekend. I set my alarm for 4 AM the evening before, but I always seem to rise early when I am getting up to do something important. I lie in bed still, for a few seconds and think about what the day will bring. I am in Bar Harbor, training with the Maine Winter Sports Center Cross Country Ski Team. It is the middle of the summer, but we are not here for a long weekend of partying, we are here for our annual training camp. Once a summer we come down from
Aroostook County in far northern Maine to enjoy the training that Acadia National Park has to offer. Miles and miles of amazing carriage road running trails, rolling mountains on the seacoast and cracked pavement roads greet us as we walk out our door. Due to the fact that the park police do not allow roller skiing on the nicely paved roads inside of the park we are usually confined to numerous laps on one of the less traveled, beat up roads on Mount Desert Island. However, this morning we are getting up early to beat the system. The team has been holding an annual time trial up to the top of Cadillac Mountain for several years now. In order to do this we need to be done with our workout before the park police start patrolling at 7:30 AM. This year, we are getting up extra early though because our crazy Swedish coach, Jens wants us to start a new tradition- two times to the top. First time up classic, second time skate making it a Duathlon. I think we are all a little crazy though for following his lead. Either way, this is a workout we have been training several weeks for. We are more than ready. As I get out of bed and get ready to go, the sun has not yet risen, but it is starting to get light. The birds are starting to become alive. Most people are just arriving back from the bars. We are going out training though, and this is what I love doing – training for a purpose. This year the purpose is chasing a dream, and that dream is Torino. Unless a man has trained himself for his chance, the chance will only make him ridiculous. William Matthews -Make it count

Sightings This summer in New England has been spectacular ñ comfortable temperatures, lots of tourists and many bags of entries from Sighters around the continent. Once again, we called up intrepid writer JacíKiye McCollett, who once again permitted your mail to fill up her house. Once again there are superb entries that warrant emptying more of the crockery cupboards at Rovers North. As always, it’s helpful for rookies to review the rules for Sightings - it can be just as useful for the grizzled Sighting veterans as well. Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in an distinctive way. Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won’t surprise us, either, and thus we can(t award you a mug. We’re delighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in off orad magazines, British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. You shouldn’t be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways to get a coffee mug. Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication, we close off the Sightings. If we’ve mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we won’t mention it again. If you’re new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Welcome aboard and send us your new Sightings. Rule #4 - We’re not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, one mug per Sighting per issue. Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits. Rule #6 - Psst... if we can’t read you name and address because of atrocious penmanship, we can’t recognize your Sighting nor send you a mug. Psst...E-mail submissions - remember we can’t send a mug by e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might make an error. Let us know if you think you’ve been jobbed, but all decisions of the Editor are final. Banks know in times of uncertainty and strife, people turn instinctively to images on perseverance and solidity. That’s why Morgan Stanley chose a South African Defender 110 on safari for its big ad campaign. Enjoying the ad were Allan Brown, Jackson, NJ, Page 44
Ron Thompson, Baltimore, MD, Bill Kendall, Centerville, VA, Ben Geisinger, Watertown, MN, Mark Wilson, Bloomington, IN, and Jamey Reynolds, Jacksonville, FL. Peter King, Signal Mountain, TN, wanted to know why the Rover was shod with “pavement tires” and “who’s going to steal those rear-mounted spare tires?” Sadly, it can’t warrant a mug [see Rule #2]. Mastercard chose another safari locale, this time featuring a Series III Hi Cap Pickup, for its magazine ads. Greg Coffman, Coshocton, OH, Ray Burton, Mt. Lebanon, PA, and Bill Kendall, Centerville, VA, sent us copies of the ad. To show off its line of expedition and equipment cases, Pelican uses an NAS Defender 110 to demon-
strate versatility and durability. Not a bad choice, wrote Michael Beckley, Sheridan, OR. Beretta, the Italian firearms manufacturer, uses a Defender 110 in its image ads, as seen in the Wall Street Journal by Carlos Garcia, Albuquerque, NM, Jamey Harrell, Ochlechnee, GA, and Russ Keil, Tiburon, CA. Frank Hamm, Weston, MA, received a catalogue from Kevin’s Fine Outdoor apparel and found a Beretta Gun 6 Jacket hung over the rear quarter of a Defender 90. While Prince Harry was putting his foot in this mouth and demonstrating bad taste at costume parties, he was also photographed standing around a family Series II-A. When Mt. Etna erupted again, the Italian Red Cross sent workers in their Land Rovers, reported
Frederick Behrens, Powhatan, VA. Zack Arbios, Elverta, CA, spotted a Series rig in a Kenwood ad in QST magazine. Now who could put a quality radio in a Series Land Rover? Many images showed the destructive power of Hurricane Katrina, but one struck Jim Vititow, Rio Rancho, NM, and that was a Discovery Series II crushed by a fallen building. On a happier note, Mark Fowler, Ripley, WV, Dana McGee, Collierville, TN, and A. Eric Harthman, Jr reminded us of the Bausch and Lomb commercial for contact lenses that featured a Land Rover. He also claims to have seen the only Series III on St. Thomas. Can this be true? Doug Young’s wife, April, graced the pages of Fit Pregnancy magazine with a lovely photo and their handsome Land Rover Defender. The Santa Clara, CA family welcomed Jet Kalani Howell Young in June. Maybe Frank Sands, Houston, TX, found a good toy for the baby, a PC game called “Round the World Challenge.” The kitted-out Discovery Series I’s will lead you on quite an adventure. Watching the Discovery Channel, Peter Whelan, Cranford, NJ, ran across an older program featuring interviews with denizens of Death Valley, CA. John Turner and his Defender 110 [or Series II-A 109”] were featured, too. Watching The Average Joe, Peter Hoyle, Yonkers, NY, found the loser climbing into a Series Station Wagon in Tahiti – shedding a few tears, perhaps? Peter also spotted P-38A Range Rovers used as requisite summer transportation for the in crowd off on summer vacation in a New York Sunday Times feature.
David Ducat, Lebanon, CT, opened up Cigar Magazine in July to discover an article featuring a Defender 110. “Cigars and Land Rovers; it’s going to be a good day!” Other Land Rover fashionistas, like Rob Modica, Tucson, AZ, found a woman modeling a jacket beside a topless Series II-A 88” in a JC Penney catalogue. Instinct Magazine shared fashion tips with a ’06 Range Rover Sport, an ’05 Range Rover, and an ’05 LR 3. Sounds like good product placement to me! Mitch Stockdale, Lenoir City, TN, enjoys National Geographic and read a great piece by Robert Pelton Young reminding readers of the strengths of Land Rovers. Marc Fowler, Ripley, WV, spotted a Tyco ad featuring a Defender 110 bringing a doctor to an African village. Tyco wants you believe that the smiles are because of the medicine; Fowler believes it’s because of the Defender! The St. Croix Rod catalogue features a Lightweight on the cover, report Jeffrey Gaeckle, Durham, NH, and Tim Cammisa, Butler, PA. Frank Sands, Houston, TX, also spotted a Discovery Series I on the beach in a Progressive Auto Insurance television ad. Steve Heare, Arlington, VA, and Eric Allen, Detroit, MI, found a lovely, denim clad lady, leaning against a topless Series II-A in a St. Johns Bay ad for J C Penney. I’d certainly keep the top off mine if she would lean against it, too! Alex Jones, Portland, TX, is a Lieutenant in the US Navy and “had to pleasure to see Jordanian military Defenders at work in the port of Aquaba, Jordan, during a port visit by the USS Yorktown during its final deployment.” And the Wall Street Journal featured a photo of some classic 109’s with “an interesting cage setup.” Just for your service, let us send you a mug.

Daily Driver The
Only You Can Prevent Rover Fires
By Mike Koch Wanna see Mike frolic around a burning Land Rover in a bathing suit? Nope, me neither. It was one of those hazy, hot and humid summer days. There’s no air conditioning at my desk at Rovers North; none at home down in the hollow where the humid summer air seems to stagnate, and my Rover has the dash vents welded open for summer with my door tops stowed in my barn. How to stay cool? Find a Vermont swimming hole! For me, I drive to the Charlotte Beach on my way home from work to swim and look out at the sun setting over the Adirondacks. Only a bit more scenic than growing up swimming in suburban concrete swimming pools.
Page 46
Feeling refreshed, I jumped into my Rover and headed home, about a ten-minute drive. Halfway home, I decide to take a shortcut down a country dirt road. All of a sudden, I noticed all this talc coming through the dash vents and filling up the cabin. “Humph, there’s an awful lot of talc on this road. Wait, there’s no car in front of me stirring up any dust. Wait, that’s not talc. IT’S SMOKE!” Pedal to the floor, I locked the brakes and stopped right in the middle of the road. Wearing only a bathing suit, I shut the engine down and ran out to pop the bonnet. “No smoke. Good! Wait, bad! Let’s have another look inside at the dash. Oh boy, the cabin it really filling up with an awful lot of white smoke which smells a lot like toasted Lucas!” Reaching behind the seats, I grabbed the fire bottle, pulled the pin, and point it at the dash. “I’m about to lose my Rover. Not cool. All my hard work is about to go up in a cloud of smoke before my very eyes! I forgot to kill the headlamps; that must be it!” I shut the headlamps off and the smoke began to dissipate, as did the smell. I inspected the wiring from the fuse box to the headlamp switch and it was absolutely wasted. I briskly drove home at dusk with no lights and opened the fridge. The next evening, Arthur and I were in the shop rewiring the dash till about two in the morning at Rovers North. But, that’s a tale we as Rover owners know all too well. I’m still not sure what caused the electrical fire, so maybe we can’t necessarily prevent Rover fires, but we can certainly write about them.
An anecdote to this story is the tale of the lingering smell. For over a week after the Rover fire, I had this repugnant odor emanating from somewhere under the dash. Folks at Rovers North were convinced that my nose was playing tricks on me and that is was some residual smell leftover from the fire. One night barbecuing at my place with some friends after work, I was admiring my Land Rover and noticed something unusual stuck in the driver’s side dash vent screen. Upon closer examination, we found a brown furry critter. A dead bat!
Night Vision
Having recently given our condolences to summer, the days are getting shorter and shorter, which is great for winter Rover projects. But we’re not there yet, and I still have roughly a thirty-five mile commute home on all backcountry roads with no street lamps. Wildlife can pop out in front of you at any given moment and make a real mess out of your Rover, just ask our editor! After I fixed up the wiring on my headlamp switch, I took the opportunity to install one of the most overlooked and under-rated products that Rovers North sells: Hella Vision Plus headlamps. Hella uses European headlamp technology in a D.O.T. approved version with a 60-watt high beam and a 55watt low beam. I was thinking about installing some dinner-plate-sized aftermarket auxiliary lamps, but wasn’t sure that they’d necessarily improve the looks of my Rover. These headlamps are a direct replacement for Series, Defender, and Range Rover Classic factory headlamps. Installation is less than an hour and, for the value, the price is more than reasonable. Illuminating the road ahead, my Hellas and I set out for the first test-drive to see where adjustments to aim had to be made. What a significant difference! The sides of the road were illuminated and the low beams were better than my previous high beams! The high beams were like having colossal aftermarket auxiliary lamps on the front bumper; this is due to the precise, focused beam pattern that Hella has developed. I was absolutely impressed with my lighting upgrade and didn’t have a single oncoming motorist mistakenly flash me for having my brights on! After making a few adjustments to the aim of the lamps, I drove home feeling not only safer, but also like I had made a wise purchase at a great value!
