LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Rovers North, Our 24th Birthday Party at Silver Lake, Ontario, was blessed with super weather, great attendance and enough mud to wear with pride. We are writing on behalf of everyone who attended this year’s event to thank you for your generous donations and continued support. Having a successful fund raising auction is key to continuing our club’s annual traditional premier event. Jean-Leon Morin, President David Pell, Secretary/Treasurer Kevin Newell, Off Road Coordinator Ottawa Valley Land Rovers Carp, ON Canada [Rovers North congratulates you and your organization for another sterling event. It’s a highlight of the North American event calendar –ed.] Dear Rovers North, I have recently started to purchase all my parts needs from Rovers North and I wanted to let you know how pleased I am at the quality (second to none) and the timeliness of their arrival. They arrive well packed for protection and your pricing can’t be beat. Looking forward to getting my parts I have
just ordered. All the very best to the Rovers North staff! Gary Wilkinson Calgary, Alberta Canada [Rovers North has served Canadian enthusiasts for decades. Save us some seats at the Calgary Stampede! –ed] Dear Mark, I want to state my sincere appreciation for the outstanding support and customer relation skills of Steve Haskell. I am now and have been a loyal fan of the Land Rover since my childhood days growing up in the Caribbean watching the old Series trucks working the dirt roads. Today, I am the proud owner of a 1999 Discovery Series II and a 1997 Defender 90 NAS Station Wagon, currently under restoration. As such, Steve has been a valuable resource, guide and mentor through his professional advice, patience and superior people skills. For the past several years, I have been a loyal customer of Rovers North and I can honestly share with you that it has been a pleasure doing business with your staff, and especially Steve. His genuine display of care, great salesmanship, professionalism and vast knowledge of everything Land Rover has been a blessing.
DEC, the affordable, easy to use diagnostic test system for all Land Rovers 1995 & later. The Independent garage trade constantly demands OEM or near OEM tools to carry out Land Rover ECU vehicle diagnostics, especially for coding or reprogramming damaged and or replacement ECUs. The DEC SUPERSCAN II is just the tool you need! The DEC SUPERSCAN II affordably provides the advanced automotive diagnostic test systems needed by the independent garage. This PC based scanner is comprised of a small blue interface box (about the size of a paperback book), a cable set and the necessary software. All you need is a PC (desktop or laptop) running Windows 9x or better (Win 98, 98SE, Me, XP, 2000, NT) operating system with at least a Pentium II processor and one free serial RS-232 or USB port and Bluetooth equipped. The Superscan II has many features such as: • Read and clears fault codes. • Displays live data for effective trouble shooting. • Test and activate vehicle systems independently. • Perfect for ABS, ACE and SRS system faults. • Ideal for trouble shooting navigation, video and speech recognition systems in late model Land Rovers. • Key Coding/Programming. • Airbag ECU Programming. • BSI Configuration. • Live Data Activation. • Error Code Reading and Erasing. • INCLUDES FREE software updates available on the web for 1 year after purchase. Easy to use, The Superscan II includes its own built-in INFORMATION SYSTEM that gives the exact procedure for each programming function before starting the procedure. To access, just select the system to be programed and press the Control I (ctrl + I) . It's that simple! DEC 4

J.P. Young Oakdale, LA [The idea that I would be so petty as to use this space to vent my jealousy about your compliments to Steve, well, I never! –ed.] Dear Rovers North, You may have seen this many years ago – as I did – but then I was not so aware of the Rover mystique. Recently I had a chance to see the movie “The Gods Must Be Crazy” again for the first time in 30 years. Anyway, if you’ve seen it you’ll remember that a Series Land Rover plays a huge part, truly demonstrating a Rover and what it can do – with a bit of humor attached. If you haven’t see it, I highly recommend watching it. Keep on Rovering! Henry Gould Delray Beach, FL [The 1980 film “The Gods Must Be Crazy” tweaked apartheid South Africa, consumer materialism, and Land Rovers in equal amounts. The movie was such a hit with Land Rover enthusiasts that the Rover Owners Association of Virginia (ROAV) actually rented a drive-in theater for one event and showed the movie to hundreds of assorted Land Rovers –ed.]

Dear Rovers North, The local television station’s 11:00 pm news showed gridlock and horrible road conditions due to a snowstorm. They said one of the only drivers able to get through the snow was so-and-so and then showed him in his Defender 90 (I believe he was in Hartford, CT). Yeah! That’s the vehicle for snow all right! I was in my son’s Discovery today and it was a monster in the snow. Sherry Block Hadlyme, CT [In New England we know that Land Rovers excel in winter conditions, Discoverys or Defenders -ed.]
Andres and Denise Gold Hacienda Heights, CA [You let a naked woman lay on the bonnet of your Defender? Wow – what a guy! Thanks for letting me know about this; I might have missed the photo while perusing the articles –ed.]
Dear Rovers North, Playboy will have a model posing in all of her glory on a ’94 Defender 90. The magazine should appear in the next few months (February – May). You’ll know because a bunch of guys will write in saying that they were the first to spot the Playmate of the Month lying on a Landie. The Defender in the photo is mine. A Defender made a not-socommon appearance – a true worker at heart. The Defender is always ready for the tough work that somebody has to do!
Hello, Thank you for all your help throughout the year! Esteben Gonzalez West Hollywood, CA [You’re welcome, Esteben. If any talent agents in Hollywood are looking for a handsome editor-type for a movie, let me know! –ed.]
Dear Rovers North, I enjoy all the articles in the Rovers North News magazine. Keep up the good work! Todd Frey Wilmington, DE [Thank you, Todd. There will be a pop quiz tomorrow –ed].
ordered parts from Rovers North several times and have been nothing but pleased with the service and products. Sam Harrison Mulino, OR [It’s nice to hear from the Pacific Northwest. The Rovers North News is just one of many services that Rovers North can provide to enthusiasts worldwide –ed.] Dear Mr. Letorney, I work for Clay Lacy Aviation as a Pilot/Captain for Lear 60, 55, 34 and 25 jets. I am hoping that one of my trips will bring me into Vermont so I can stop by and say “Hello.” Thanks for the great magazine and catalogues. I always look forward to reading them from cover to cover. Will Chau Sylmar, CA [Hey, if you are going to land at Burlington International Airport in VT, it would be just a short trip to the Owl’s Head Airport on the coast of Maine. I’d love a ride –ed.] _______ ________

THE COOLEST PLACE ON EARTH Story & Photos by Eric Evans
[Eric Evans and his wife, Tessa, and their ’97 Defender 90 SW, live in Naples, FL. The owner of a commercial landscape company, Eric entertained RN News readers when he bought his ex-MOD 109” from Rovers North and drove it to Florida. We’ve read of his explorations of Big Bend, TX, and his 45-day trip to Alaska, too. Here’s his account of a fall ’07 trip to Iceland –ed.] In describing “The Happiest Places on Earth,” Eric Weiner noted that “Iceland is cold and dark for much of the year. It is isolated and, for goodness sakes, has the word ‘ice’ in its name. Not much happy about that yet these descendants of the Vikings are, statistically, among the planet’s happiest people.” What a challenge –we had to find out why for ourselves. The internet provided a lot of information about touring Iceland by Land Rover but I also received significant help from Bruce Elfstrom at Overland Experts. He operates off-road tours all over the world and has done Iceland countless times. Of particular help were his comments and warnings about the famed F910 Route from Askja Volcano to Nyidalur in the interior, which was to be the highlight of our trip. By combining travel insights from experienced expeditioners, like Bruce Elfstrom of Overland Experts, I finally produced a route map that would allow for stops at all of the locations and activities my wife Tessa and I were most interested in. More importantly – it provided maximum time off-road in the Defender 110! While boarding our outbound flight from Boston’s Logan Airport, I suddenly found myself not only excited, but worried to the extent that I almost did not want to go. Will Tessa enjoy her first off-road experience? My thoughts quickly changed to food and an
18
Icelandic beer as the in-flight service began. Our first taste of Icelandic food went from “this is good” to “I’m done!” in a matter of milliseconds when the flight attendant announced we were eating reindeer balls (I hoped they were referring to the shape of these bit-sized treats!) After our late evening arrival at Keflavik Airport, we were whisked away via shuttle bus to our hotel in Reykjavik Our only agenda for this first day, and a highlight of the trip, was our visit to the famed Blue Lagoon. Unlike so many of Iceland’s wonders, this one is not natural. It’s actually a hot spring pool formed by the run off from a geothermal power plant that supplies the majority of Reykjavik’s heat and hot water. I woke the next morning obsessed with the realization that I would be behind the wheel of a Defender 110 TD5 of my very own (at least for a week or so). We made our way out of town and within the first 20 minutes, we had spotted active steam vents on the roadside. Our first stop was at Geyser – the one all others in the world are named for. This was a new experience for us both and despite the touristy feel of the buses in the parking lot, it was everything we had hoped for in our first of Iceland’s wonders. We then drove to Gulfoss, another of Iceland’s treasures. At the parking area, we met some fellow Roverphiles from Italy who gave us the low-down on the road ahead, including their experience with the F910! Further down the road, we took a detour to bring the Land Rover up close and personal with our first Glacier (Langjokull. Along the way, more hot springs, steam vents and thousands of free roaming sheep! It was nearly 11pm, dark and raining hard when we arrived at Osar. There our very gracious host (and Iceland Land Rover Club member) welcomed us in for a well needed night’s rest. Akureyri sits at the base of Eyjafjorur fjord and is Iceland’s second largest city with a population of 16,000 people. It’s a smaller version of Reykjavik. We checked in at our hostel and climbed back in the Defender to fill out the day with some sightseeing to the east. Godafoss waterfall, located halfway between Akureyri and Lake Myvatn, was picture perfect and provided a backdrop for our new trip mascot Leif (a stuffed puffin). Lake Myvatn comprises one of the most active volcano areas in Iceland (another major eruption is expected at any time). Signs warn you to stay on the walking path in order to avoid being boiled alive should the ground give way to the geothermal forces just below the surface! It’s truly amazing and a bit unnerving that at any moment the whole place could blow up around you. We chose to explore the Dimmuborgir, the 2,000 year old remains of a lava flow filled with pillars, caves and arches. Afterwards, we traveled off road to the
nearby Hverfell crater. Looking for a challenge, I decided to make an ascent to the top. The steep trail leading straight up the side was tricky and I was exhausted by the time I reached the top. The sulphur lay thick in the air and the wind howled loudly; it was an eerie experience. Tessa and I arrived on a farm outside of Husavik for a ride on Icelandic horses, small, stout, sure-footed and very clever. These horses are so revered by Icelanders that if one ever leaves the country, it is never allowed to return out of fear of weakening the breed. Our ride included a run down along the black sand beach. As we made our way down the cliffs, we attracted the attention of a group of a couple of dozen other grazing horses. They were apparently interested in us, or our horses, because they suddenly all began to chase us down the beach! Pushing further toward the northeast, we made it to Kopasker, a small fishing town of only 184 people, and our stop for the night. This is the least visited area of Iceland. Though not nearly as isolated by distance, the landscape reminded me of my trip up the Dalton Highway to Prudhoe Bay Alaska. We reached our destination at the furthest point North in Iceland, the Hraunhafnartangi lighthouse. It sits just ½ mile south of the Artic Circle. Returning to the South, we entered Jokulsargljufur National Park, home to Dettifoss (Europe’s most powerful waterfall). The
track down the west side of the park was quite fun, but river crossings could definitely be hazardous during the spring and summer melt-off. Several we crossed would have been well above the windscreen of the Defender! As you approach Dettifoss, all vegetation suddenly disappears, leaving only volcanic rock and sand. It is like being on the surface of the moon. In fact, NASA astronauts trained here prior to their lunar expeditions. So I guess you could say I’ve driven a Lunar Rover! The final leg of the day’s journey was to get to our farmhouse accommodations in the Central Highlands, several hours of off-road driving to the east of Askja Volcano and the start of our F910 route journey. After a great breakfast the next morning, we were on our way. The route west to the Askja area became increasingly barren and the coloration of the environment changed drastically and frequently. Climbing the track toward Askja, we finally arrive at a Rangers Hut, and his very cool Defender 130 with monster tires and all the necessary gear. To the right the track leads through the Dyngjufjoll massif – an enormous and very recent looking lava flow field. At the top, we dismount and start our long hike to the crater. The weather is quite nice as we start our roughly one mile hike from the parking area to the 715 foot deep (deepest in Iceland) lake of Oskjuvatn. The landscape felt moon-like; I felt as though I should be wearing a space suit. As we neared the lake, we encountered Viti 19
Crater (Hell in Icelandic) and its steaming blue water. As I looked for a way to negotiate a path down to take a warm dip the weather changed - seemingly in an instant. Determined to get into Viti, I moved forward down the gully leading to the bottom. Just as I thought to myself “damn – forgot my hiking boots,” it happened. I hit a patch of thick peanut buttery mud and lost my footing. Down I went, sliding maybe 30 feet before I could stop myself. As I fell, I was unable to brace myself with my hands because I had our video camera strapped in my right hand and was holding my hat on my head with my left. The painful result was a dislocated right shoulder and a short video clip of the camera striking the ground with audio of the expletives that came out of my mouth. We turned back – head on into wind, freezing rain and at one point snow. I have never been so cold. I gave Tessa my hat and we spent close to ½ hour making our way back to the Land Rover – the entire time staring at the ground because the wind was so cold on our faces. Safely back in the truck and in pain from the dislocated shoulder, we drove back down the lava flows to check in with the Ranger. He said he had not traveled the F910 in more than a week, but as long as the rivers were not too deep we should be ok. The F910 is widely regarded as the most hardcore off road route in Iceland, particularly if you take the more southern “old-road,” which is no longer “maintained.” Not really sure what they meant by
20
“maintained” as there is no road, no trail. Perhaps what it means is that they no longer replace the plastic guidance poles located every 300 feet or so – sort of like channel markers for a boat. Anyway, the official route is just over 72 miles long. It crosses open desert, lava flows, rivers (no bridges), kisses the Vatnajokull Glacier and even climbs over and down a boulder strewn 2,000’ mountain before descending west from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge into the valley heading south toward Reykjavik. The first section after leaving the Askja area is really quite cool, provided you keep up your speed and keep moving. It’s a long stretch of open, black sand desert and we were running at about 35-40 mph in the Defender. After about 20 minutes or so, thick chunks of lava began to appear again and we were forced to navigate our way through them, while following our yellow poles. Progressively, the lava got larger and the spaces between got smaller. Eventually, we found ourselves picking and choosing “lines” across the lava chunks ranging in size from a speed bump to a VW Beetle and taking full advantage of the D110’s articulation capability. My cheeks still hurt from all the smiling I did in this section, despite the excruciating pain in my right shoulder at every shift of the transmission. The next section we entered was the wash out plain from an old glaciated volcano that seemed to go on for miles. Our first crossing (we had to cross in two places) of this “river” was nearly ¾ of a mile
wide. Fortunately, because of the time of year and to some extent the time of day, the water in this crossing stayed below the hubs. The trick was that the navigation poles did not exist in the river. We were lucky to spot one on a ridge as we came out of our second crossing so we could continue. As we made our way up from the wash out plain, we encountered the massive Trolladyngja and the beginning of snow. Trolladyngja is the greatest shield volcano in Iceland and its lava flows are thought to have run all the way to the north coast near Akureyri (about 75 miles). For the Land Rover, at 2,000 feet above the surrounding area, this was a giant pile of gravel to be conquered. Boulders ranged in size from apple to small car and were all aiming for the sidewalls on the Defenders tires. Not surprisingly, we were worse off than the Land Rover at the end of it. As the snow continued to come down even harder, we found it increasingly difficult to keep our eyes on the poles. We had brought our GPS, but it could not keep a signal unless the windscreen was facing south. At one point, nearing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge we lost track of the poles completely and had to turn back. The elevation changes are constant, rivers and streams seem to go in every direction and just about any direction you look in; looks like it could be the route. At one point, having not seen a navigation pole for quite a while, I determined that the only safe route was to keep the Vatnajokull Glacier close by and on my left, which meant we would be continuing in a Southwesterly direction. Finally, Tessa spotted a navigation pole in the distance and we were back on track. Along the base of Mount Kistufell, we pass one of the emergency huts located in the interior for people who lose their way. I was hoping we would not have to use it. We climb and descend countless ridges and hills before finally arriving at the outpost of Nyidalur, the geographic center of Iceland. The F26 heading south featured basic dirt and gravel with plenty of washboard surface. In fact, the washboard was so bad at one point that the truck started going sideways and I heard a distinct hissing sounds coming from the back of the truck. A tire? No, a beer! 30+ miles of 6” washboard exploded a beer out of its can! No great loss, unless you are in Iceland where government controls alcohol sales and a six pack of tall boys costs nearly $30! So much for that “new car smell” too. As the miles of washboard dragged on, it became more apparent that we would not make our destination. By 1:00am we were both exhausted and ready to call it a night at the Highland Motel. We hit the sack and enjoyed a well needed rest. Over the next two days, we traveled east along the Ring Road to Hofn at Iceland’s southeastern most point making stops along the
way. We visited Jokulsarlon Iceberg Lagoon, which was very cool, although a bit touristy. It is an inland bay located directly between the Vatnajokull Glacier and the Atlantic Ocean. They have amphibious vehicles that take you out into the bay to view the icebergs and the seals. As we headed back toward Reykjavik, we had one last challenge in front of us. Thorsmork is “Thor’s Forest” – even though there are no trees. Not only has it been recognized as one of the most intriguing places on earth, its also one hell of an off-road challenge! Three Glaciers, mountains and two deep rivers surround the “forest.” The route requires the fording the Krossa River dozens of times. The Krossa is cold, fast moving and deep. To add to the level of excitement, the river bottom is made up almost entirely of loose rocks and sand! Water levels can change dramatically throughout the day. I found myself more nervous than at the start of the F910 route. Fortunately, we convoyed with a group from Scotland in a D110. Keeping in mind Bruce’s instructions on proper river fording technique, I entered the first deep crossing. There is no adjective to describe the feeling of the rear end of a Land Rover floating down stream as you attempt to push on and keep moving forward. It was like driving on marbles. Heading back to Reykjavik for a couple of days of excellent meals, a few shots of “Black Death” liquor and a 4-star hotel, Tessa and I decided we also deserved another trip to the Blue Lagoon. So we headed off the paved road one last time on a shortcut to an afternoon of soaking and relaxation. Tessa and I hope to visit this amazing place again someday and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for adventure and the trip of a lifetime. _______ ________

First Impressions The All New 1967 Land Rover 109” Story & Photos by Jeremy Bergeron
[Jeremy Bergeron, Colorado Springs, CO grew up in Texas. He’s an architect with The Larson Group in Colorado Springs. While he loves his wife, Jenny, and his two children Ethan and Ashley, missing from his life was a Series Land Rover. Here’s his story as to how he found one –ed] Our friends thought I must have made a partner in the firm when we drove up in our new Land Rover (pronounced with a snobbish English accent). A year earlier, Jenny and I had just moved to Denver, Colorado as newlyweds from Austin, Texas. Every chance we had, we explored the Colorado landscape. We soon realized that our adventuresome life was hampered by the lack of ground clearance and front wheel drive on our Volkswagen. Shamelessly, I sensed an excuse for an SUV.
30
We looked at a ton of SUV’s. I was bored by most, moved by none. That is, until I test drove a Land Rover Discovery. I always liked the look of the Discovery from afar, but always assumed that they were expensive and unobtainable at my stage in life. I was wrong on one of those assumptions. We traded in our beloved Volkswagen for a 1996 Land Rover Discovery SE7 from a small used car dealership up in Boulder, CO. Of course, I was smitten with the Land Rover D90 parked next to our Discovery on the dealer lot, but I just couldn’t convince Jenny or the bank to go for the 3 times the Discovery price the dealer was wanting for it. One can dream, right? The Land Rover drew lots of admiration from friends. I failed to mention to them that I could buy two of these Discovery’s for the price of one of our friend’s cars. Don’t tell anyone, it’s our little secret.
Land Rovers, “As Seen n TV”, were part of my life. I remember laughing hysterically with friends while watching the Series Rover on “The Gods Must Be Crazy,” and sobbing while watching “Born Free.” I loved the stories that involved Land Rovers. I thought of a photo of some old Series Land Rovers sinking into the ground as they sat decaying on an old farm in England. The pictures were beautiful with the imagery of the old Rovers returning to the earth. In my mind, the old Series Land Rovers are kind of like that; they don’t die, they just slowly return to the earth. I wonder what stories those Land Rovers could tell. Did they carry royalty? Did they rescue some lion cubs? Or did they just haul manure? The stories are what drew me in to the Land Rover world. To me, Land Rovers are purposeful, they look the part, and they are extremely capable taking part in that purpose. I love reading the adventures of folks taking treks around the world in their Discovery or Defenders. I love the community and camaraderie of fellow Land Rover enthusiasts, both in person and the online communities found in various Land Rover forums. Eventually, the Discovery was just not enough to feed my Land Rover addiction. I started to get that funny feeling deep inside that I needed to go to the source of that addiction and decided I wanted... scratch that, I needed to find a Land Rover Series. Thus began my search for a Series. In the spring of 2007, I had a tax refund burning a hole in my pocket. Jenny supported my search but she corralled her enthusiasm. I looked locally in Colorado. I searched CraigsList nationally. I searched the Land Rover forum “for sale” sections. I watched the bids on eBay. I found nothing. I was looking for a Series that was in daily driver condition, and soon realized that my “large tax refund” was not as large as I had originally thought. I started to see more and more about importing a Series from England. Wow! The prices I was being quoted for a Series including shipping to the United States was ridiculously lower than anything I had seen stateside. I was game! I found a nice looking 1975 Land Rover Series III 109 Station Wagon with the 2.25L diesel. Can anybody
say Biodiesel? Maybe even run it on vegetable oil? Yes! I could start making my own fuel with old frying oil from the local Chinese food take-out restaurant. I would become the envy of all environmentalists as I putted around town hauling my recycling to the recycle center with only the smell of french fries in my wake. I was excited! I convinced my dad that we could fly to Jacksonville, FL, pick this truck up at the dock and drive it all the way home to Colorado Springs fresh off the boat. It would be a great father and son bonding time as we traversed half the country in a 30+ year old truck that has never seen American soil. Who was I kidding? I looked into having the truck transported from Jacksonville to Colorado Springs, which actually would be cheaper than flying and driving back, but where is the adventure in that? Where was the story? I wanted to be able to tell the story of the time my dad and I drove an old Land Rover Series across the country. Ultimately, too many details and too many unknowns took the fun out of this scheme. Thinking more about the quest for a Series vehicle, I realized that I was looking for a daily driver, when in fact, I needed to find a Series project. The story and adventure I was looking for could be found in the project itself. I never knew my grandfather, but he and my father restored old Model T’s and Model A’s back in the 1950’s and 60’s. One first project was the restoration of a rust bucket Model A into a functional car. Like so many others, my dad traded the product of his story in on a 1962 Ford Falcon. It has now become a story ending with regret. So I wondered about a “project” 1965 Series IIA 88” advertised in Colorado Springs. The seller said “all the pieces are there”. I went out to his 5 acre horse property and, sure enough, there in the open barn were lots of pieces. I don’t doubt that all the pieces were there, but there were actually 3 or 4 Series trucks scattered around the barn. This would have been way too much project for a first time Series owner.
31
I eventually found my way to the Rovers North forums, where I did a search through the “for sale” section with a simple “Colorado” keyword search. There, I found a very simple ad for a 1967 Land Rover Series IIA 109”, with a 6-cylinder, located 2.5 hours away in Alamosa, CO. The listing was a few months old by then, with no pictures and an asking price was $5,000. I contacted the seller by email and Dan (name changed to protect the innocent) responded telling me the truck was still available and that he was now in O.B.O. mode. He sent me some photos of the truck but it was hard to tell much from them. Dan really wanted me to come take a look at the truck in person. I got the sense that he wasn’t finding many potential buyers willing to visit a “project” in a relatively remote area of Colorado. I took the information that was given to me and posted it on a few different Land Rover forums to get some feedback and a recommendation for the “OBO” amount. Based on the photos posted, forum posters suggested $1,500. I called Dan and told him I could offer no more than $1,500. He agreed we should meet. Sweet! Time for a road trip.
32
I have this idyllic idea of my dad and me bonding while turning wrenches on an old Land Rover project. However, my dad said he was done working on cars in his lifetime. He has moved on to fly fishing. I hate fishing- never mind that I haven’t tried it! I called my dad up to see if he would like to take a road trip the following Saturday down to Alamosa. I did not tell him the purpose of the trip but he guessed easily. After a sleepless Friday night, my dad and I left on a gorgeous fall morning, perfect weather for a drive. We had some good shoulder to shoulder bonding time conversing about cars and life on our drive down. I assured my dad that I was only going to look at the truck since I brought no money with us. We met Dan at the truck, parked for 4 years in some tall grass alongside a metal building off the highway near Alamosa. Dan had removed all the extra Land Rover parts and pieces that were stored inside the truck and spread them across the ground around the truck. My first reaction was all smiles; the truck was beautiful to me. I crawled around every inch and was amazed at the lack of rust and the general completeness of everything. However, there were a few pair of underwear that appear to have been used as oil rags lying around the truck; one hopes it was oil. I noticed there were a few items on this Series IIA such as the heated windscreens and extra black panels around the bulkhead that led me to think that maybe this was some kind up special model. Even my dad got caught up in the moment. After looking over the truck we prepared to say our goodbyes to Dan. My dad surprised me and offered $1,000 on my behalf which was countered to $1,250. Deal! One problem, we did not bring any money. We offered a deposit, but Dan would not accept and said a handshake was all he needed. I just bought a 1967 Land Rover Series IIA 109” for $1,250 on a handshake. We would come back down the next Saturday to haul the Series back to Colorado Springs. The week between, I did some research to figure out why this Series truck seemed to have a few “extras” compared to others I had seen. I found out that this Series was #329 of only 811 NADA (North American Dollar Area) trucks ever produced. The NADA trucks have a slightly modified 6 cylinder Rover engine, and they were the last 109” trucks ever produced and sold in the U.S. This Series left the Solihull factory in September 1966 heading to San Francisco. This all sounded pretty cool to me. Saturday could not come soon enough! My dad and I once again headed down to Alamosa in the Discovery, this time to bring the Series home. We rented a U-Haul trailer in Alamosa and met Dan and a buddy of his at the truck. The Rover had no brakes; we put the transfer case in neutral and pushed it onto the trailer. After completing the deal, Dan tells me that a couple showed up at his house the night before offering $3,000 for the truck and had a flatbed trailer ready for the haul. He told them that he already had a deal. Dan honored his handshake even though somebody offered him more than double my purchase price. He did not even try to get more money from me. He even saw to it that a spare 6 cylinder engine that came with the truck found its way to my house. The drive home with the Discovery pulling the Series was slow and uneventful. My dad and I took many opportunities to make stops
and snap a few pictures along the way. We stopped at an old antique store in Fort Garland before heading up La Veta Pass (9,413 ft). The owner of the store, a man in his 80’s, practically came running out to check out the old Series Rover. We slowly climbed up La Veta Pass. The Discovery did a decent job pulling on the highways, but once we were in stop and go traffic with lights in Colorado Springs, the Discovery felt tired. Hills started to feel more like mountains. We had one last stop to make before getting home, the car wash. I thought it might be wise to get rid of the years of dirt from the San Luis Valley off the truck. We finally arrived home! The Series has taken over the oil stained side of the garage from the Discovery. The poor Discovery is now sitting out in the cold and snow. The Series looks kind of happy to be indoors for a change. Taking inventory of the truck, I have found only one dead mouse; no signs of Hantavirus yet! In the truck, I found a Xerox copy of the front and back of an old February 1967 Four Wheeler Magazine with an ad for the NADA 6 cylinder truck. Later, on Ebay, I found an actual copy of that issue. So now I have a road test of the “new” 109” to read. I have been told that I need to come up with a name first, so I am still working on that. Apparently everything was working and running when the truck was parked, which gives me great hope for its future. Just need some time to tinker. Friends have come over to see the new veddy-British Land Rover and most seem pretty excited. The guys seem to understand the desire and excitement, but most of the girls just roll their eyes. I love my wife! This is just the beginning of my episode of this Land Rover’s story. It has a story spanning more than 40 years already. I would love to have my dad come along side me in this project. Maybe after he is done fishing! My kids, Ethan (4) and Ashley (2), may one day like to do more with the Series IIA than just jump from row to row. My hope is that my family will be able to bond with this Rover adventure. I am intending not to spend too much time tinkering, and make sure my family comes first. Like most good stories, they get better with age. I feel like I am part of the new generation of Land Rover Series owners, the next guard, if you will, that will continue to enjoy and safeguard the Land Rover heritage and continue the story. _______ ________

EMPLOYEE PROFILE: A LOOK AT ART LIMACHER What, where, and when was your first Land Rover experience? I think my first "real" Land Rover experience was when I bought my 109” ex-mod pickup. That is when I really got into Land Rover "ownership.” It was my everyday vehicle, come rain, sleet, snow, or sunny days; although, I didn't do too much off-roading with it except for the drive to Rover North on these lovely Westford dirt roads. I am sure that with the ex-ambulance’s heavy-duty suspension, I always had at least one wheel off the ground at any given time, which thankfully disappeared once I installed our parabolic springs.
What was your longest trip in a Land Rover and did anything unusual happen? ANY trip in a Series Land Rover seems like a "long" trip. Ha! My "longest" trip was when my two brothers-in-law and I piled into his hard top 88" and went to the Down East Rally at the Museum of Transportation in Maine. Ahhhh, good times.
Where did you grow up?
What got you interested in Land Rovers?
I grew up in Bangor, Maine, where I lived until the 6th grade, then I moved to Williston, Vermont, through high school, and then Burlington, Vermont.
I got interested in Land Rovers after I began working at Rovers North. I believe I was here for 3 or 4 years when I bought my Series III 88” and did some repairs to the chassis and bulkhead, then I painted it and sold it.
What positions have you held at Rovers North? When did you begin working here full time?
What Land Rovers have you owned?
I started working at Rovers North full time in November of 1987, picking and packing parts in the warehouse for 7 or 8 years. I was then promoted to "Shipping Manager" for a couple of years and before long I moved into phone sales and tech support for 9 + years. Subsequently, I moved to Texas for two years and worked for Zach Carter in the Land Rover Dallas Parts Department but missed friends and family so we decided to move back to the unforgiving cold of Vermont to be with them. Mark and Andrea were gracious enough to re-hire me back here at Rovers North.
First, I had a 1973 Series III 88", followed by a 1969 Series IIA "Bugeye" 88" on which I replaced the chassis, engine, gearbox, suspension, wire harness, etc. but sold it before I even got a chance to drive it! My last Land Rover was a 1971 Series IIA 109" ex-mod pickup with a full canvas, which isn't the warmest vehicle to be driving through the below zero temps of a Vermont winter. Once I installed parabolic springs, I was so amazed by the smooth ride that I forgot about how cold I was!
How would you describe what you do at Rovers North today?
Absolutely, the 109" ex-mod! Actually, it was the only vehicle that I drove for a couple years and I grew to love the uncertainty of if, or when, I was going to reach my destinations.
I still participate in some phone sales and technical support, but my current focus is increasing our commercial accounts and letting them know that we are here to support them. Whether it’s the DEC Superscan II diagnostic tool or our quality, competitively priced Genuine or Pro Line parts, we can supply anything they may need for any Land Rover product they may be working on. We offer kits to streamline installation where it makes sense, so you get everything to do the job in one package. Some examples of this are: our Brake Kits, Bushing Kits, CV Joint Kits, and Coil Conversion Kits. After considerable development, we’re proud to offer our own aftermarket ProLine brand of parts. Some features of this line are: new ProLine brake calipers with no core charge, brake pads and rotors, air springs, radiators, water pumps, expansion tanks, and propshafts.
Which one of them was your favorite and why?
What activities do you do when you're not at Rovers North? I enjoy spending time with friends and family, guitars, motorcycles, tattoos, and piercings.
How have Land Rovers influenced your life? Well, with 20 years of Land Rover parts experience under my belt, Land Rovers have been a part of my life for almost half of my existence! _______ ________

LAND ROVER ACHIEVES BEST SALES MONTH IN ITS HISTORY Land Rover has achieved yet another record – with the most successful sales month in its entire history. In September 2007, the company sold nearly 26,000 cars around the world – 34% up on September last year and the best performance in 714 months of business. Freelander 2, Land Rover’s award winning compact 4x4, and the fuel efficient diesel powered Range Rover have attracted buyers in global markets. Sales in September reached 25,933 and it means Land Rover has sold 167,400 cars so far this year, a rise of 15.7% on last year. Once again emerging markets showed their appetite for Land Rover cars with sales for the month up by 105% in Russia and 249% in China. Land Rover’s Managing Director, Phil Popham, said, “This is a great achievement and it’s always satisfying to break past records. We can now approach our 60th anniversary next year with confidence. I want to see the business move forwards responsibly, profitably and in a sustainable manner.” Mr Popham added, “We’re on track with plans to fit technology to improve the environmental performance of our cars and we've given a hint of new, exciting design. A great future is shaping up.” Last month Land Rover announced a stop-start system would be fitted as standard in European Freelander 2 TD4 manual derivatives
within 18 months, improving fuel consumption by 10% to 41.5 mpg and cutting CO2 emissions by 7% to 179 g/km. Since 1948 Land Rover has been manufacturing authentic 4x4s that represent true ‘breadth of capability’ across the model range. Defender, Freelander 2, Discovery 3, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover each define the world’s 4x4 sectors, with 78% of this model range exported to over 140 countries. Land Rover employs 8,500 people and supports a further 40,000 jobs supported in the supply chain. Land Rover is committed to addressing the challenges of climate change and since September 2006 carbon dioxide generated by Land Rover manufacturing activities and UK customer vehicle use has been balanced through an industry leading offset programme run by Climate Care. DOUBLE WIN FOR LAND ROVER IN THE AUTO EXPRESS NEW CAR HONOURS 2007 Gaydon, Warwickshire, 25 July 2007 – Land Rover has won two prestigious awards in the Auto Express New Car Honours 2007, beating tough competition to win Best 4x4 Recreational and Best 4x4 Off Roader. The all-new Land Rover Freelander 2 fought off competition from the new Honda CR-V and Hyundai Santa Fe in what is one of the most hotly contested sectors to win Best 4x4 Recreational, while the Discovery 3 beat the Mercedes M-class and BMW X5 to the accolade of Best 4x4 Off Roader. Auto Express road test editor, Ollie Marriage, said: "The off-road king is back. The Freelander 2 has returned to the top of its class with a neatly designed and beautifully executed second-generation car." Land Rover's managing director, Phil Popham, said: "We are absolutely delighted to win these awards from Auto Express for both the Freelander 2 and the Discovery 3, in a year where we will have a third successive sales record." "Achieving the Best 4x4 Off Roader award for the Discovery 3 - a car that continues to be an outstanding success, consistently beating new entrants from other manufacturers - is a testament to its class-leading diesel engine, its versatility and its all-round package." The Freelander 2 is on sale at Land Rover dealerships throughout the UK, priced from £20,935, including the contribution to offset carbon dioxide emissions. It has already sold over 8,000 units in the UK since going on sale. The biggest selling model in the UK is the TD4 manual with a combined fuel economy figure of 37.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 194g/km. The Discovery 3 has sold over 34,000 units in the UK since launch in 2004, and continues to collect critical accolades the world over, with nearly 100 international awards to date. _______ ________

Land Rover Classic Parts (LRCP), a new name and a new brand, was introduced in late 2004 as a Land Rover business that purchased, warehoused, distributed and marketed Land Rover Genuine parts at reasonable prices specifically for Range Rover Classic (1970-1995) and Discovery Series 1 (1989-1994). LRCP encompassed roughly 10,000 parts numbers, all of which were Genuine, living up to the recognized and trusted Land Rover image of quality parts. Parts that exclusively fit vehicles covered under the LRCP umbrella were moved from Land Rover’s main UK warehouse, to make room for new inventory, to a special LRCP warehouse. Parts that fit vehicles covered both under LRCP and Land Rover remained in the mainstream Land Rover parts program. At the time of LRCP’s inception, Land Rover recognized the strong parts demand for its well-engineered, durable Range Rover Classic and Discovery and their loyal, enthusiastic owners. Land Rover hoped to develop a wider customer base for dealers by increasing product range and variety via a strategic and tactical marketing campaign. A web-based ordering system was established specifically for LRCP that was similar to the dealer’s existing system, yet was completely autonomous and included its very own CD-ROM parts catalogs. The new logistics structure meant that Land Rover retailers who did not register for the program could only buy Classic Parts through authorized LRCP distributors. Another goal of LRCP was to review products that were no longer available and resource parts that were economically viable. It was natural for Land Rover to entrust Rovers North with the first LRCP account in North America in 2005. At the end of 2007 Land Rover decided to absorb 325 fast moving parts back into its main UK warehouse. Unexpectedly, Land
Rover then ordered the rest of the Classic inventory to be scrapped. The news that thousands of Classic parts were about to be destroyed prompted negotiations between Land Rover Classic Parts and their largest customer, Rovers North, to rescue as much NAS inventory as possible. Rovers North’s Parts Manager, Dirk Parkins, and his team successfully rescued a large portion of the remaining NAS inventory and arranged shipment to Rovers North, where it is now safely warehoused. Rovers North is proud to continue in the tradition of LRCP’s support for enthusiasts by providing quality parts at reasonable prices for Range Rover Classic and Discovery Series I, whether it’s for maintenance, off-road, or restoration. _______ ________

A Series III Runs With the Deere Story & Photos by Bob Rusnak
[Bob Rusnak, Morrisonville, NY, is a mechanical engineer who adores “old equipment” – his John Deere and International Harvester tractors. To further enjoy his trout fishing and deer hunting, he convinced his wife they needed a ’73 Series III HT. Here’s how he got one –ed.] It all started about 8 years ago. I was looking for an older four wheel drive vehicle at the time. I had owned a number of four wheel 48
drive vehicles in the past including a Willys Jeep, original style Bronco, Jeep Wagoneer, and International Scout. I knew very little about Land Rovers. I was at a reunion party for my wife’s college and got talking to one of the men there about Series Land Rovers. He was in the process of restoring one. We talked for some time on his Land Rover and how they were built, aluminum bodies, parts availability and so on. I was intrigued and added a Series Land Rover to my list
of possible vehicles along with a Willys Jeep and International Scout... A few months later, I got a call from my brother-in-law whose parents were from England. He told me about a Series III Land Rover that was for sale in my area that he had seen on the Land Rover Exchange. I went and looked at the vehicle and decided to buy it. I had driven the vehicle for total of about 10 miles when I pulled it into the garage to look into a coolant leak. I determined that the leak was coming from the gasket on the bottom of the thermostat housing. Having heard of Rovers North, I gave them a call and placed my first order for a thermostat, gaskets, and bolts. I had no idea at this time that this would be the first of many many calls to order parts. The parts showed up the next evening, so I went out to the garage to install the parts. I opened the door to the garage and smelled gas. The gas was coming from the tank area and there was a small stain on the floor where it had leaked. While I was under the Rover to look for the gas leak, I started poking around to see the condition of the vehicle underneath. After scraping away some crud and doing a little cleaning, I saw that the frame of the vehicle was not in as good shape as I first thought. There was some substantial rot around the front spring shackle area, just behind the front horns, and the outriggers. At this point, I decided that I had to do something about the frame problems. My first thought was to clear the body panels from the area and hire someone to do some weld repairs to the frame. On a parallel path, I started looking into the cost for a replacement frame. I found a new frame for sale online that was not too far away and about the price of what I would have expected to pay someone to do welding repairs to the frame. Not having much experience with welding, I decided to go with the new frame. I could do this work myself and the end product would be better. What a can of worms this decision opened up. Well, to replace a frame everything must come off! I started my disassembly of the vehicle. As I got along on the disassembly, I realized that I needed to make a decision on what standard I wanted to work toward. Every part I took off needed some level of attention. I decided that I would strive for a rust free, clean vehicle with all parts functional. For the 10 miles I had driven the vehicle, it drove well without any engine or gearbox problems that I was aware of. I would limit my work on these to a thorough cleaning, new seals and the auxiliary equipment including the clutch slave, starter, alternator, carb, replacing intake manifold (cracked), and fuel pump. I pulled off the body parts and found a number of areas that would need to be addressed to live up to the standard I was striving for. The tub had
some bad galvanic corrosion where the steel supports contacted the aluminum, the radiator panel had rot along the bottom and the bulkhead had corrosion problems at the bottom of the pillars. Besides these items, everything needed a good cleaning, disassemble and inspection. I spent the first winter disassembling the vehicle. Most of this went along without many unexpected problems. A good set of break bar extenders (pipe), a good sized persuader (large ball peen hammer), and some PB Blaster were all necessary. In hind sight, a hot wrench and a grinder with a cutoff wheel would have also been a big help. There is something to say about how oil leaks preserve parts. Anywhere there was any oil leaking, things came apart great. By the time spring came along, I had the entire vehicle apart and the new frame sitting on jacks in the garage. It was at about this time that my wife said that the Rover reminded her of the Scarecrow on the Wizard of Oz. “They took a part off and threw it over there, took another part and threw it over there. “Ha-ha”, I said ruefully. I had Land Rover parts everywhere - side yard, back yard, and all over the garage and basement. Every part that was removed – and that was every part -got the same treatment. They were cleaned, disassembled, inspected, worn parts replaced and all seals replaced before reassembly. I can’t venture a guess on the number of hours spent cleaning and rehabbing all the parts. The first parts installed were the springs and axles. This was a milestone in the project. I was actually putting something back on the vehicle. This was followed by a nice clean engine and gearbox. I installed them with rehabbed motor mounts and new gearbox mounts, yet something looked askew. Thank goodness I have been obsessed with taking photos of every step and documenting every moment of the disassembly. After some head scratching and some measurements, it appeared like I had reversed the gearbox mounts. I jacked the engine/gearbox up and switched the mounts and everything fell into place. With the body parts out of the way, I next took care of the items that mounted on the frame: fuel tank, fuel line from tank to pump, exhaust, speedometer cable and emergency brake parts. The tank looked good so I plugged the openings with tape and applied a little air pressure to the tank with my shop vac to check for leaks. I sprayed all the seams with soapy water and could not find a leak anywhere. I installed the tank and would address a leak if there was one later. I thought it must have been one of the seals or a fuel line that was leaking.
49
The bulkhead was not up to my standard. I had been shopping around for someone to repair mine or a good replacement. On the internet, I found a bulkhead that was advertised as perfect and rust free. I called the seller and purchased the part. After a lot of anxiety and a long delay, the bulkhead was finally received. It was not what I would have called perfect but it was rust free. Another reason I went with this bulkhead was that the seller told me it included the dash parts and that they were in good condition (my lower dash panel was rough where the hole for the heater is located). On went the bulkhead next along with the steering box/column, brake booster/master cylinder, clutch master cylinder, heater box
me and made some repairs. The sand blasting was too aggressive and it deformed the sheet aluminum. Prior to installing the tub I cleaned, repaired, primed and painted all the inside surfaces. This was done to all the body parts before installation. The new tub required some new mounting holes to mount to the tabs on the frame. The radiator and restored breakfast were installed, along with the hoses and pipes to the engine and heater core. Now on a roll, I installed the seat base, floors, tunnel cover, and cowling. The windscreen and top installation required some shimming and shifting to get the top to line up with the windscreen. The doors, wings and bonnet came next. Next came the big moment - starting the engine. I topped off all
and blower. The steering box/column and bulkhead were left loose at this time. With these parts in place, I ran all new brake and clutch lines and hoses. I also installed all the engine auxiliaries at this time. As part of the brake work, I put in all new wheel cylinders, brake springs, and pads. Next came the dash components, along with completing the wiring from the instrument panel to the engine harness, rear harness, stop switch, fuel sender, reverse switch, oil pressure gauge. Now for the body parts: I replaced my tub with a Series II tub I purchased with no corrosion. Again, this tub was not quite as nice as I would have liked. The person I bought it from sand blasted it for
the fluids, primed the carburetor and turned the key. It started sputtered and coughed and then stalled. I repeated the process a few times but could not get the engine to idle. If I kept my foot on the throttle, it would run, but the second I backed off, it would stall. After many attempts to adjust the carb, I still could not get it to idle. I removed the carb and found an open port where there was a solenoid valve missing. I rebuilt the carb and plugged the open port. This corrected most of the idling problem. What a nice feeling to hear the motor run! Now came the hardest part for me, the bodywork and painting Because of the sandblasting, the tub required filler work to make it
50
look decent. As a rookie at this, it took forever to get the car ready for paint. I finally got the Rover ready for priming and paint. I must say that after working and working on the tub and some areas on the wings, my acceptable standard dropped off from what I originally was shooting for. Given the parts I was working, with this was a good compromise. As part of the body work, I had primed all the parts. This was the only way to really see how well it would look. Paint day was next. I took the vehicle to a friend’s shop for the painting. We sand blocked down the entire vehicle with pads and tack clothed it off. We got right to the painting. This all went well and what a transformation in the appearance of the vehicle!
bulkhead to move the door on its hinges where it needs to go. It looks like I need to pull that side of the bulkhead forward a tad to get the correct alignment. This is also showing up with the top. It is raked a little in the same direction. Reflecting back on this project brings back a lot of great memories. When I bought the vehicle, I had no intention of doing a frame-off restoration. I pulled it in the garage that day and kept removing bolts until there were none left. Everything took way longer and cost twice as much as I anticipated. After just less than 5 years of time and over 180 parts purchased, I have pretty close to what I wanted from the start, a clean, rust-free Series Land Rover.
Since then, I have installed all new window tracks in the door tops, installed and tested all the lights, some of the trim parts, repaired some radiator hose leaks, and some general tidying up. There’s a longer list of “next steps”: install a new headliner that was damaged by mice, install the window tracks/glass in the back windows, new door seals all around and remove the upper dash to move the wiper drive so the passenger side wiper goes in the correct direction. I still don’t have the body alignment totally correct. The passenger side door hits the windscreen mounting bolt just before it closes all the way. There is not enough clearance between the tub and
If necessary, I would certainly do it again - it was a blast! I like the no bells and whistles simplicity of this Rover. Now I can’t wait until spring to put it on the road and start driving it! Living in the salt rich northern NY area, I’ll wait. Just as I sat thinking about what standard I wanted to restore the truck to when I started the restoration, I now sit here thinking how I want to use it. _______ ________

BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL By Jeffrey B. Aronson
The required automobile inspection – an annual ritual in most states – invokes all the fear of your significant other telling you, “We need to talk.” When your Land Rover is 42 years old, the mechanic can always find something to discuss. The requirements vary from state to state, and even within states, but generally speaking, 19 states require inspection for safety, and another 11 test for emissions levels in certain regions. In Maine, the testing is for required accessories [wipers, lights, directional signals, horn] and for safety [brakes, rust holes in floors or sills, front end, tire tread depth], and in one county, emission levels keyed to the date of manufacture. For Series Land Rovers and early Range Rovers Maine offers an exemption; if you register your car as an antique [25 years or older], you need not get an annual inspection. However, the “antique” cannot be registered as your primary vehicle. So while the other ‘66 II-A, the QM I, can slip by as an antique, I go through the anguish of the annual inspection on the other II-A, the QE I. 52
Since I’ve owned lots of British automobiles for those same 42 years, you’d think I’d have this inspection thing down, but no. First off, I seem to have all the inspection stickers come due in December or January, hardly ideal times for effecting repairs on a Land Rover. Secondly, I spend the warmer, drier summer months cataloging all that I must repair rather than actually fixing anything. Thirdly, I have this solemn belief that deteriorating electrical connections, fraying brake linings and exhaust pipe corrosion will all heal themselves in some miraculous manner just before the inspection. They don’t, of course, which is why I was crawling underneath the Rover the day before the inspection, trying to get the emergency brake to really hold the car still. It required hours of fiddling with grease encrusted bolts and adjusters, but I finally got the brake to hold – a bit. Then I checked every light, watched the wipers work, checked the exhaust, raised the car on the high lift and shook the front wheels, and listened to the horn. The day of reckoning came this morning. Naturally the left front directional signaled nothing. Removing the amber cover from its rubber seal revealed a pod of rust encasing a broken bulb. The bulb required needle-nose pliers to remove the broken casing but at least the electrical connection remained sound, and a new bulb did the trick. The steering systems passed muster, the deteriorating exhaust pipe did not leak and the car merited another year’s inspection sticker. Shops and individuals who specialize in off road and expedition requirements will insist that no vehicle should venture out alone or in a convoy unless every system is in good shape, and that the time to assure that competence is before the trip, not on it. As a New Year’s resolution to myself, I’ve set upon maintaining the systems on my vehicles to working order before they wear out or rust
away. I’ll let my Rovers speak for my success or failure in my resolve. _______ ________
Richard Sammons is an architect in New York City who specializes in houses that do not look like glass pyramids or airline terminals, but like, well, houses. Not surprisingly, his car of choice is a Morgan Plus 8. It’s his only car and he uses it daily. In a New York Times interview, he noted “This is my only car. I take it to construction sites. You know what it’s like there. Dirt roads.” Sammons calmed his passenger, the author of the Times’ article. When steam seemed to escape from the hood at a traffic light he insisted “It’s not overheating” pointing to the temperature gauge to prove his point. “Some antifreeze had leaked onto the engine” (No surprise here; the Morgan Plus 8 used the Rover V-8 familiar to Land Rover owners). The story reminded me of the time that I sat in the QE I on the ferry that traverses the 90 minute ride across Penobscot Bay to this island town. I had invited a frightened passenger, a neighbor, to join me in the Land Rover instead of sliding around the slippery plastic bench seats in the small cabin. By the middle of the bay the seas pounded the ship and waves broke over the bow, and then splashed over the top and hood of the Rover. As the water cascaded from the top some leaked between the door tops and the safari top. “Oh no,” she cried, “It’s wet in here!” I leaned over to her feet under the heater matrix and put a finger in the puddle of water. Raising it to my lips I breathed a sigh of relief. “It’s only salt water,” I said happily, “not oil or antifreeze!” She looked at me in horror. Apparently in her automotive experience, water should not enter the interior of a car. Pshaw! In my automotive experience water on the floor was vastly preferable to antifreeze [from when
the heater core dissolved] or engine oil [from when the split in the valve cover gasket dripped oil in front of the airflow from the fan]. Mr. Sammons concluded that “In a city where it’s so difficult to have a car, having a boring car is really stupid,” Which is as good a reason to own a Land Rover as I have ever read. _______ ________
While stuffing the wood stove one Sunday, I was listening to the radio, in which the speaker extolled the virtues of mending clothes. As one who can barely sew a button on a shirt, I turned my attention away for a while and then stopped short. “Mending old clothes” is an awful lot like repairing old cars on your own. No one mends just any old shirt or pants; only favorite ones warrant the time and attention. And no one mends just any old car; it must have a special appeal for you to put your time and energy into it. I have often wished for better weather when working outdoors on my Land Rovers, and I have cursed mightily when some repair had gone less than smoothly. Yet there’s a great deal of pride in doing the work yourself [or in my case, doing it again after I messed up the first repair] and learning to understand the exploded diagrams in the Service Manual or a Haynes Manual. My Land Rovers help me earn my income so making time for maintenance and repairs is a necessity, not a luxury. I can also pretend that a vast amount of time spent reading up on Land Rovers is “work,” not “play.” Many real employers [i.e., your boss] will not see it that way. Let me recommend the Land Rover Classic Parts collection of CD’s which include technical information, service manuals and owners handbooks on every Land Rover model through the Range Rover Classic and Discovery I. Whereas the printed manuals with their big Land Rover logos on the cover might invite unwelcome inquiries about “what on earth you’re doing,” the CD opens up on your computer screen. There’s every opportunity to you to look engrossed in the latest sales figures, memo from Corporate,
research, and the like while you’re secretly reading up on Land Rovers. It’s the best thing since sticking magazines inside textbooks in study hall. And you can print up the pages you need on the company printer! _______ ________
Like other owners of classic Land Rovers I don’t get to the Land Rover Centre or dealerships very often. There’s only one in dealer in Maine (Scarborough), one in New Hampshire (Bedford) and one in Vermont (Burlington), so I must admit there’s not much opportunity, either. Over the years, all three dealerships have proven to be friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their newer vehicles. They’re also good for a cup of coffee and occasionally free internet access, but they can tell that I’m not a potential customer. Land Rover helped jumpstart the trend with its successful Land Rover Centres. What began as some artifacts, casually dressed “sales guides,” VCR’s with Camel Trophy tapes and off-road demonstration courses, has grown into a monster. The Boston Globe suggested that one area Land Rover showroom “bears a quiet gentility that breathes ‘money.’ You almost expect to see gentlemen and ladies in jodhpurs. It's all glass and cherry wood, with a wireless business workspace, a kitchenette with beverages, leather chairs and flat-screen TV, children's playroom with cute miniature rocking chairs and video box. The walls are covered with vintage sports paraphernalia such as snowshoes, skis, and kayak paddles, the better to connote the rugged Land Rover lifestyle. Our favorite feature? Trevor, the owner's friendly, shaggy Briard, greets customers with wagging tail. There's also an off-road course that shows customers just how sturdy a Land Rover really is. Hang on.” With “customer luxury now a standard feature,” it’s no surprise that one new building in the Boston area cost $30 million to erect, features Italian marble floors and 30 – foot ceiling. There’s an espresso bar, a restaurant, a business center with Wi-Fi, a customer lounge with a marble fireplace,
plasma screen televisions in the marble bathrooms, another one for the kid’s room, and a nice restaurant. Another dealership has a large bronze elephant stationed at the grand entrance. A BMW dealership, measuring 130,000 square feet, will include a cappuccino cafe, three-level showroom, three customer lounges with leather chairs and flat-panel TVs, a fleet of loaner cars, a children's zone, putting green, radiant heat, and two concierge desks. Yet another dealership has a putting green in case you want to practice your golf strokes. Needless to say, you have to sell a lot of cups of designer coffee to pay for the overhead. While you’re luxuriating in a dealership more elegant than any hotel you’d likely stay at, your car is in the service department that’s scrambling to help the owner cover the costs of the building. It does help explain the hourly rates are closing in on $100/hour. I’m also guessing you don’t see a lot of salespeople dressed in the “Full Cleveland Look:” plaid pants, white belts and white shoes. My personal showroom/service department is an open area between a large spruce tree and 30 feet of neatly-stacked firewood. The dirt lane to the 100-year old house is an off road demonstration course of its own. A convenient tarp replaces the marble mentioned above as the “floor” over the dirt surface. The ceiling opens to a stunning view of the sky and the lack of walls means that I have an unimpeded view of the sea and an intimate knowledge of the weather. The kids’ playroom requires only that they walk to the shore to play. A portable radio substitutes for the plasma screen television. There’s a wide variety of food and drink; the menu depends on whether I went to the store recently. The bathrooms are to the left of the firewood; use any tree or bush you wish. And help yourself to coffee. It’s in the kitchen. _______ ________

It’s a thrill to reintroduce Timm Cooper’s disc brake conversion kit for Series Land Rovers. Now you can install the latest Defender disc brake components onto your trusty 88” or 109” Land Rover and enjoy amazingly quick and controlled stopping power. Front kits are based on a new hub assembly and new swivel ball housing, cast from ductile iron with a minimum strength rating of 80,000 pounds per square inch, this kit is an engineering masterpiece. The front caliper mounts are cast into the housings, just like Defender, to handle the massive 4 piston Defender calipers that grab 12 inch vented Defender discs, just like the NAS 90 enjoys. Timm’s rear conversion kit uses the same hub assemblies with solid Defender rear discs and 2 piston Defender rear calipers. Using all Defender brake components, as well as wheel bearings and seals, means easy service, easy parts availability in the future, and adds directly to the value of your Land Rover. These kits are designed to work with an 88” or 109” dual power master cylinder available on Land Rovers manufactured from 1969 through 1984. For owners with early single non-power system master cylinders, you will need to convert to a dual power master cylinder. This conversion involves installing a vacuum port into your intake manifold, installing a dual power pedal box assembly which houses the dual master cylinder, vacuum servo unit and brake light switch. This pedal assembly is larger in size. It will require modifying your wing top, splashguard mount, and installing a Series III style splashguard. You will then need to re-plumb your clutch master, and install additional brake lines to complete the dual circuit. You will also have the option of adding in a safety failure junction valve, with or without warning light, and choosing between 54
hydraulically or mechanically activated brake lights. These parts can be found in our catalog or on our website in our Series III brake section. We also have available a good selection of second hand dual pedal box assemblies. Please contact us for assistance, and more information on improving your brakes. We’re here to help. Our Timm Cooper Front Brake Conversion Kit includes 2 new front swivel housings with new seals and retainers, 2 new hubs with wheel studs, new hub bearings and seals, 2 new 4 piston front brake calipers, 2 new vented brake discs, new brake pad set, 2 new flexible brake lines, gaskets, all necessary hardware, and detailed instructions prepared by Timm Cooper. This is a bolt-on conversion that requires no drilling or fabrication. Our Timm Cooper Rear Brake Conversion Kit includes 2 new hubs with wheel studs, new hub bearings and seals, 2 new rear brake calipers, 2 new solid brake discs, new brake pad set, 2 new caliper mounting brackets, gaskets, all necessary hardware, and detailed instructions prepare by Timm Cooper. This is also a bolt-on conversion that requires no drilling or fabrication.

SIGHTINGS Maybe the projected new corporate parents of Land Rover, Tata Motors, will appreciate the unique appearance of Land Rover models. They clearly resonate with the American and international public. The qualities that we love as Land Rover enthusiasts clearly captivate those who rouse popular passions. Movie directors, advertising art directors, and consumers agree if there's a Land Rover present, you should pay attention. That assures us as a lot of Sightings – in fact, lots and lots of Sightings. Once again there are superb entries that warrant emptying more of the crockery cupboards at Rovers North. As always, it's helpful for rookies to review the rules for Sightings - and useful as a reminder for the grizzled Sighting veterans as well. Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in a distinctive way. Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won't surprise us, either, and you won't get a mug. We're delighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. You shouldn't be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways to get a coffee mug. Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication we close off the Sightings. If we've mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we won't mention it again. If you're new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Rule #4 - We're not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, please remember - one mug per Sighting per issue. Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits. Rule #6 - Psst... if we can't read your name and address because of atrocious penmanship, we can't recognize your Sighting nor send you a mug. Psst...E-mail submissions remember we can't send a mug by e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might make an error. Let me know if you think you've been jobbed, but all decisions of the Editor are final. 61
Your Editor is always appreciative of the efforts of Sighters; sadly, some Sightings come in after deadline for the previous issue, which means they fall under Rule # 3. Your Editor cannot award himself a mug for enjoying DVD’s of The Interpreter [which opens with a shot of a Defender 110 in Africa] or The Italian Job [Defender 110 in evil role] remake. So we need to thank the Sighters who spotted the commercials and ads from Texaco, Garmin, Equitours, Cole Haan, National Geographic Traveler, Beretta, Farmers Health Point, Army Safety and Departures. We commend Michelle Armada, Houston, TX, Jonathan Detwiler, Norwell, MA, Milton Milner, Hendersonville, NC, John Conover, Jr., Stony Brook, NY, Kevin Dunn, Jacksonville Beach, FL, Chris Runnels, Bellingham, WA, Bernard McMahon, Washington, DC, Steve Andrews, Easton, MD, Kevin Dunn [see Rule #6], Esteban Gonzales, West Hollywood, CA, Sam Harrison, Mulino. OR, James Dargan, Plymouth, MA, and Benjamin Buchanna, New Haven, OH, Dave Bowman, Orange, VA, Tony Sims, Beaverton, OR, Todd Kriner, Ellicott City, MD and Dave Whaling, Greenville, PA. The 2004 REI floor layout catalogue also had the rear taillights of a Series III on the cover, reports John Bradley, Denver, CO. Land Rovers have become a touchstone of popular culture. Without telling us why, Todd Frey, Wilmington, DE, read an article on “Midlife Crisis Cars” in USA Weekend. In the “Stay-at-Home Mom” category, USA wrote “we originally chose a classic 1960’s Land Rover Series II-A, an off road vehicle that figures heavily in exotic African safari adventures.” Instead the author chose the more modern $86,000 Mercedes G500. Go figure! ESM magazine specializing in surfing and Curve used a Defender in its ad in the August 2007 issue, noted Todd Frey, Wilmington, DE. He also noted that when ESM wanted to cover the feats of three female surfers, it placed the three of them inside and astride a Defender 110 NAS. Robert Alley, Kennesaw, GA, spotted a Defender 90 in an article in Decline magazine. Steve Johnson, Johns Island, SC, found a safari ad with a cheetah on the hood in Smithsonian Journeys. Bruce Burnham, Sandy, UT, sent a safari travel ad from Insights magazine and an Ecuadorian Defender at work in an expedition ad from Luxury Travel Guide magazine. Mike Mason gave his wife, Peggy, credit for spotting a Defender in a Botswana safari article in Conde Nast Traveler. When the British double agent Phillip Agee died, Time included a photo of Agee in his RHD Series I in its reportage, notes Martin Lewis, Vero Beach, FL. Will Chau, Sylmar, CA, spotted Rovers at work in ads for Virgin Bush Safaris. Jack Hayes, Nantucket, MA, noted that the J.L. Powell catalogue has “pricey clothes and nice Rover pics,” accurate on both counts. Jay Gerish, Fairfield, NJ, saw that IZOD jeans uses a Defender 110 to distinguish their clothes. David Ducat, Lebanon, CT and Pat Harris, Wilton, CT couldn’t miss the Defender doortops in the Polo Explorer ad in GQ. And he couldn’t miss the photo of a Defender 110 in the safari article in Outside Go magazine. Dan Mitchell, Littleton, 62
CO, and Kevin Humphrey, Jonesboro, AR, noted a great Defender 110 in the latest Cabela’s fly fishing catalogue. Greg Coffman, Coshocton, OH, found a door from a Defender supporting a model in the Timberland catalogue. When the producers of a so-so buddy flick The Bucket List, needed to make certain that you’s know of Jack’s and Morgan’s last wishes by including a Defender on safari. Good work to James Dargan, Plymouth, MA, Dendy Jarrett, Nashville, TN, Kimberly Bufton, Galveston, TX, Andrew Gold, Hacienda Heights, CA, Mark Puzella, Hingham, MA, Sherry Block, Hadlyme, CT, Allan Mellske, Chicago, IL, Ben Cooley, Fairview Park, OH, Mark Fails, Palmyra, PA, Randy Swiencki, Middleton, CT, Dave Bowman, Orange, VA, Kristen Minner, Carnation, WA, Mike Archer, Victoria, BC, Canada, Greg Sveska, Monument, CO, Dick Newton, Charlestown, RI, Jeff Quinby, Northfield, MN, Jake Piersol, Waverly, WV, Kevn Thayer, Abingdon, VA, and Chandler Shepard, E. Sarasota, FL. National Treasure 2 – Book of Secrets became “a better movie in the presence of a Land Rover 109,” claims Marc Fails, Palmyra, PA. Zach Jaggers, Chattanooga, TN, Scott Rady, Wesley Chapel, FL and Jeff Quinby, Northfield, MN. The movie War features a Range Rover, notes Michael Libott, Burbank, CA, and a preview for Nancy Drew features an LR3, notes Dave Bowman, Orange, VA. The TV show Las Vegas features a Defender right behind the co-star, notes Kevin Thayer, Abingdon, VA. Kevin Buckley, Schenectady, NY, Jake Piersol, Waverly, WV and Dave Bowman, Orange, VA, noted a Land Rover used by the archaeologist/host of The Bone Detectives. MTV’s Wild Boyz chase a lion in a topless Series Rover, according to R.B., Jacksonville, NC [See Rule #6]. On the new series The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the heroine relies on a Range Rover P38-A as her escape vehicle, notes Leslie Bright, Kingspport, TN. On Speed TV’s Unique Whips program the hosts took Jennifer Capriati’s Range Rover and installed a state of the art sound system and some extra bling, reports Douglas Shepard, E. Sarasota, FL. The Washington Times web site posted a photo of Defenders in defense in an article about the Gaza-Egypt border, noted Jim Salyers, King George, VA. Stuart Huddleston, Panama City Beach, FL, took a FEMA Incident Command System certification exam and he found a Defender crossing a flooded road. Richard and Lucia Gerhardt, N. Palm Beach, FL, were driving their Discovery Series I when they were passed by a Discovery Series II. What did they spot but a spare tire cover reading “Hummer Recovery Vehicle.” _______ ________
