LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor Louise Orlando’s “Born Free Redux” articles were very inspiring. My daughter, Jocelynn, the college student/writer is my major supporter of me getting my Land Rover and already shares in my passion for it. She bought me a subscription to the Overland Journal for Christmas. After she read up on their website and Louise's article, she emailed me that we should take our 88 on a cross continent trip someday. It was pretty cool. Thanks for the great magazine, Jeff. It is really informative. Jeff Pearl Wisconsin Rapids, WI [Glad you enjoy the magazine! The Rovers North Forum is filled with compliments and kudos about Louise and Andrew’s adventure in Africa. We look forward to your adventures with Jocelynn in the future! –ed]

Dear Rovers North, We have a 2004 Discovery – the last Discovery – and we love it very much. We had a 1999 Discovery before this one. I wish Land Rover had continued with the Discovery platform – to me the LR3 is just too big and too complicated. I look forward to receiving your magazine – keep up the good work! John Stine Briarcliff Manor, NY

Dear Editor, Last Rovers North News, LED parking, indicator, etc. lights were mentioned and I wanted to share my experience on fitting them to my Series II. A Canadian company offered a very business-like kit made especially for Land Rovers containing 8 lights: 4 amber indicators, 2 white running or parking lights, and 2 stop lights, plus a flasher unit rated for LED indicators. The kit cost $295 US. “Purists” might turn up their noses at these units. Although they are the same diameter as the standards Rover units, they are more puckshaped, they are far brighter, consume less power and are fully sealed against the elements. They do not look like they will rust out. Cooper Technica, Goose Island, Chicago, swapped them out for me and the job seemed quite straight forward. Next, I hope to fit LED’s to my instrument cluster, too. Cheers, Glenn Shriver Chicago, IL [Thanks for the suggestion, Glenn. They do make it easier to be seen in contemporary traffic conditions –ed.]

Dear Rovers North, I have been a Land Rover owner for over 28 years. I’m currently serving my second tour in Iraq with the Marine Corps and have been surprised at not seeing that many Land Rovers this time. However, I did see a 110 extended cab while I was at the Al Asad Marine Corps Base in Anbar Province. It is owned by one of the many civilian contractor companies working for the government. I will continue to keep my eyes open and count down the days until I can drive my Discovery again. Thank for all the great support you give to the ever growing Land Rover community. MSgt. James Dupont Garden City, NY [Thank you for your continued service in the Marine Corps. We look forward to your safe return home –ed.]

Dear Rovers North, I would like you to know how much I enjoyed reading the most recent Rovers North News. I do feel badly about Land Rover’s Christmas layoffs. However, the circumstances led to the addition of an ’08 LR3 to my collection of Landys for $17,000 below sticker. The LR3 joins a ’66 109”, a Defender 90 and an ’08 Range Rover. It’s a happy family. Joe Arvay Mendham, NJ [No question that this is a great time to invest in a Land Rover. Should you ever need a driver for one of those fantastic Rovers of yours, just let me know! –ed] Dear Rovers North, Thank you for shipping my new starter motor. I really appreciate it and your fine service that keeps me coming back to Rovers North. Thank you and please extend my warmest wishes to all at Rovers North. Myron Erickson [Thanks for the kind words and for your avid participation in the Land Rover community –ed].

[Based on the number of Discoverys that show up at Land Rover off road events, lots of enthusiasts share your delight with the Discovery. The LR3 platform does have fantastic on road capabilities and it enabled Land Rover to produce the hugely successful Range Rover Sport –ed.]

Dear Editor, I am writing about a fascinating 60 Minutes episode on a baby elephant orphanage in Kenya. Ivory from animals killed by poachers may now be sold on international market. With the partial lifting of the ban on ivory sales, the killing of elephants has increased substantially. A baby elephant will often die within 24 hours of the death of its mother, so this organization takes them from the wild to raise them. This organization uses their Series Land Rovers in support of their work rescuing the babies, nursing them back to health and towards longer survival. It was great to see them at work. Thomas McNerney Williamsport, PA [It sounds like a very moving story. Series Land Rovers are perfect vehicles for remote driving situations: rugged, capable and field-repairable –ed] Dear Rovers North, Just received my first issue of the Rovers North News. Loved it! What year is the QE I on the cover? Is it a Series III? Henry Vidal Miami Beach, FL [The Rover on the cover is a 1966 Series II-A. The Series III had a “modern” plastic grill –ed] P 3

My Rover is a Dog By Denise McCluggage

{Denise McCluggage is an award-winning automotive journalist and photographer, and a winning racing and rally driver on three continents. Her published works include books on driving and skiing. She is a regular columnist for AutoWeek and a contributor to other magazines and websites. She writes about automotive matters for the Santa Fe New Mexican, now her hometown newspaper after a 1978 move from Sugarbush in Vermont –ed.]

As a rally driver for the Rover factory in the early 60s (3-liter Rover sedan) I met the man who created the first Land Rover. At dinner one night he told the story of how they took some GI Jeep discards, lengthened the wheel base and built the prototype. Time masks his name, but memory and imagination plays back bright star bursts from a cutting tool chopping the frame of an olive drab Jeep some departing Yank left in a Sussex lane before dashing home to a rusted basketball hoop on an Indiana barn. I see the Brits welding in a length of steel, standing back and saying: “That looks about right.” And did George Washington chop down a cherry tree? No. But the Land Rover did get built and a few years later – 1965 actually – I owned one. I had built a house in Vermont just off the road to a new ski area called Sugarbush. The track up to my house departed the main road at right angles, proceeded steeply for about a hundred yards, then steepened more, then ended abruptly in a sharp right turn into a parking area by my house. Challenge enough on a bright summer day but merging with impossible when glazed by an ice storm or whitened with a heavy crust of snow. I can’t remember which car I had at that moment, the Mini or the Lancia Fulvia, but either was as out of place on a Vermont hillside as a Skylark in a counting house. Front-wheel drive has its advantages on snowy roads but let that road tilt upwards in serious degrees and the advantage disappears. The car’s weight is shifted aft away from the drive wheels and traction wanes just as its need is truly felt. I must say my backing-up-at-speed skills, with the weight now over the drive wheels, grew with relentless practice. However steering is still best done by the wheels that lead. I needed four-wheel drive. At a New York auto show David E. Davis, Jr. [then - editor of Car and Driver –ed.] and I had decided that we both wanted Land Rovers in school-bus yellow. I beat him to it. The Land Rover I bought was square and purposeful and whispered of adventure. It was a trench coat of a vehicle with the equivalent of D-rings and epaulets and a belt you tied instead of using the buckle. But this Land Rover was desert tan in color. I left it with a paint shop when I went to Europe on a skiing story. I returned to find it the color of a carnival ear of corn. I could have sprinkled salt on it. Perfect. The amount $135, maybe less, jumps to mind. But realize the entire vehicle seemed very costly to me at something around $3000. Such a different world was the mid-1960’s. That the color was indeed that of a school bus was amply demonstrated one afternoon when I descended my hill and turned toward town. I felt or heard a recurrent thump so I pulled to the shoulder and clambered down to check for a low tire. Raising my head I discovered cars stopped in both directions. I hastened to regain my seat and get underway. The thump was just packed snow. The Land Rover got me up my troublesome hill though not always all the way – it was that increase in pitch two-thirds the way up that could toss a monkey wrench. If more than six inches of wet snow accumulated before my contract snow-plow guy came by it was chancy that I could make the top with one pass. Or even two or three. Four was pointless. Might as well park it in the field below and trudge up by booted foot.

If the first try failed I would, on the next ones, carefully avoid my earlier tire tracks. Used snow instantly took on the glaze of a skating rink and offered no bite at all. And that would foil what I had determined by experience to be the most successful formula: third-gear high-range, heavy beginning throttle. As altitude was gained I’d gradually ease off the gas to avoid any risk of breaking loose. Traction must never be broken. Ideally that last right turn toward the house was done in a near coast. Exhale. I had, however, discovered if on that final third of the hill I sensed that both power and traction were running low, and clearly I wanted to avoid sliding backwards (a ditch that once caught out even Swedish rally champion, Erik Carlsson and his Saab lined one side of my track, a growth of small birch the other) I could grab the hand brake, twirl the steering and miraculously switch ends in the space of the Rover’s footprint. It had to be done rapidly and timed right – just at the secession of upward motion – grab, twirl, and suddenly the nose would be pointing downhill. That offered some semblance of a controlled descent; far better than a brakes-on backward slide. One night I was approaching home during a snowfall. For some reason I had a car-load of strangers, three friends of friends from down country, one a Californian I think. Oh no, the plow had not come. But I yakked on as I went into Climb Formula and began my run for the top. Maybe it was the extra weight but we were only about twenty feet short of the top when I knew we were not going to make it. Instinctively I grabbed and twirled, still talking, and headed back down hill. Then I sensed held breaths and looked around at mouths gaping to chest level. I suppose I should have alerted them. Maybe it was the headlights cutting a bright slash across the trees as we pirouetted to aim back the way we had come. On the Run Two we made it (in silence) - I picked up some roughness at the road’s edge - but my passengers didn’t resume breathing until we were inside and had a fire going. When I couldn’t make the hill I left the Rover in the field next to whatever other car I had then – a Mini (first a Cooper then a Moke) or the pretty Lancia. They were my clear-road dinghies that took me to New York or Montreal. The Land Rover was not an ideal distance driver. Nor was it really a good cold-weather vehicle. I mean the roof-over-roof design was called a “Safari roof.” Glean any temperature hints from that? And the body was aluminum and lots of glass. Great “R’ factors there. That and Vermont winters were a lot for an English heater to cope with. O.K., so the engine always started even in the deepest chill. That accomplishment was assisted by a plug-in dipstick heater that kept the motor oil somewhat more fluid than Jello. But the secret really was that handy gadget stored behind the front seats - a hand crank. Once I left the Land Rover at the Amtrak station in Waterbury and took a train to New York shortly after that service was inaugurated. Returning, we Vermont passengers all de-trained in the night breathing misty clouds like cartoon conversations. Fresh snow sparkled in the splash of the station lights. It crunched underfoot. Breathing was like inhaling razor blades. Even before I left the thermometer had not topped zero for weeks and while I was gone it had found fifty below.

As I brushed the dry light snow away from all the windows, I could hear the fruitless UR-UR-Ur-urrrr of engines trying to turn over and fading to silence. Smugly I freed my crank, inserted it through the keyhole at the front of the Rover, felt it seat and leaned into turning it. And I turned it and turned it more, feeling the resistance. I could sense the pistons moving in the cylinders, the crank churning the oil, stirring it to fluidity. My intention was not to start the engine with the crank. I had heard tales of cranks kicking back and breaking arms. I only wanted to ease the task of the starter. I got in, turned the key. And all heads snapped toward my roaring, white cloud breathing school-bus yellow beast. The Land Rover was the only thing rolling that night. But I hated it most mornings. The doors were often frozen shut. A hairdryer on a long cord could clear the key hole and ease the way to pull the door open on creaking hinges. Starting was easy enough but the seat was gelid, the steering wheel a gingerly two-finger matter. I would be well to my destination before the heater breathed something recognizable as warmth. Much later genuine sheepskin seat covers and a shaggy sheepskin cover for the steering wheel solved some chilling problems but before then I thought I had stumbled across a great idea. I saw an ad in a camping magazine for a catalytic heater to keep a tent if not toasty at least tolerable. Safe, simple. I ordered one. If it worked for a tent why not a Land Rover? I read the instructions, and felt the glow of its warm little heart as I set it on the floor in the rear between the facing seats. The next morning my anticipation was as high as on a childhood Christmas. I dashed out to the Rover to experience what I hoped would be a – a – oh, crikey! I discovered, what is that phrase “Unintended consequences?” I had not known that moisture is inherent in the use of this sort of heater. Moisture on cold surfaces freezes. Every surface inside the Land Rover was cold, ergo that morning every surface was solid with cold white ice. The windows on the inside were opaque with a quarter inch of the stuff. The seats were hard pillows of white ice; the steering wheel was thickened with white ice, the dash board was invisible beneath white ice. Even the head liner was cold and white. Slowly, sadly I removed the failed heater, acquired a light hammer and chisel and began to free my Land Rover from the cold, deep grip of a miserably failed idea. Probably didn’t take more than an hour or two. When I first got my yellow beast I had christened it with a “vanity” license plate: “DOG.” Then I could announce to appropriate groans that I had a Rover named Dog. I still have the plate. The Land Rover itself was irretrievably yielding to the heavy salt of Vermont’s winter highways. Yes, the body was aluminum and immune from that corrosion, but that part of the vehicle that wasn’t aluminum seemed doubly vulnerable. I could watch the salted highway slip by beneath my feet. When I noticed that the steering box was about to depart its moorings I sold my Land Rover for parts. I bought a Subaru BRAT for my 4x4 get-up-the-hill transport; a better heater but less than half the drama- and none of the history. P

Memories of a IIA [Harvey Geiger, Hilton Head, SC, is a columnist and contributor to Car Collector magazine. Of the dozens of classic cars he’s owned, he remembers this Land Rover most fondly –ed]

Family owned by enthusiasts since 1979

When I moved to Warren, Vermont in 1964 my rented house had no lawn or garden and my ride was a new Series IIA 88”. I thought that The Blue Bird Special Wedding Wagon awaits Trent and Heidi Smith in front of the Waitsfield United Church circa 1968. a flower garden would be a nice touch and perhaps attract the ladies. Where to place it and how to show it off? I noticed that along the edges of the back roads of Vermont there was a wonderful seasonal display of daisies and patches of vibrant day lilies sprinkled throughout. They seemed to be tolerant of road salt and oils, and were constantly buffeted by the wind of passing cars and trucks. In one of those wonderful moments of clarity (this was the ‘60s) I had a revelation that instead of passing by the roadside flora, it should whizz along with me in the bed of my “Blue Bird” Series IIA.

Story & Photo by Harvey Geiger

During that summer most ladies were going topless at the swimming holes on Mad River and my Landy joined the crowd. I fitted her out with a tailgate and appropriated some soil from the side of Route 100 to partially fill the back bed. I carried a folding army shovel and now-and-again would pause and dig up some roadside botany for my growing flower garden. I discovered that I could water the garden with the hose at home or at Hap’s, our local gas station, and control the amount of sun/shade by choosing my parking location. The garden was a great success and I would vary it as the summer progressed. It would have been a dandy addition as a flower wagon for a funeral procession, but my generation was not in the dying phase but busy making babies. So it became a vehicle of choice for weddings within my group of friends. For the second season I planted my Landy Garden in removable boxes which could be slipped out, and placed upon my stone wall. Each box contained a unique planting and although I did not attempt corn, I had great agricultural success. I didn’t try my luck at a farmer’s market, but perhaps it would prove to be great marketing gimmick to sell produce “Grown on the Roads of Vermont” Just imagine a truck garden in your own driveway! Robison on Rovers by John Robison

[John Robison, Springfield, MA, services Land Rovers and other marques at his company, JE Robison Service while enjoying the success of his latest book, Look Me in the Eye –ed.] In this article I’d like to take you inside the electronics on a Range Rover Sport. I think you’ll be amazed at how sophisticated these machines have become. If you were to name one particular capability that Land Rover was known for, what would it be? The wise guys among you would pick oil leaks or Lucas electrics, but I’d pick surefootedness or superior traction. To me, that’s what Land Rover is all about. From the very beginning, the Land Rover was a vehicle that went where nothing else could. And even more important – it came back, under its own power. When you think about it, the coming back part is often the hardest. After all, if a ravine is steep enough, you can get anything to roll to the bottom. Rusting Lincolns and Caddies at the bottoms of the gullies and canyons out west are certainly testament to that. But it takes an exceptional rig to reach the bottom intact and an even more exceptional rig to climb back out under its own power. The Series Land Rover was such a rig. A well tended Series truck could climb anything, even – as we saw in The Gods Must be Crazy – trees. In the beginning, Land Rover’s off-road prowess came from its mechanical design. It had a unique blend of weight and balance, suspension travel, gearing, and four wheel drive. But the Land Rover’s design came with some built-in limitations and some of them significantly reduced on-road capability. When Land Rover returned to the American marketplace in 1987 with the Range Rover, it was clear something had to be done if they were to maintain their off-road reputation while delivering the speed, power and boulevard ride demanded by the American market. 14

For this generation of the Range Rover, Land Rover set its sights on the top positions on both the road and the trail. So if they had to climb trees, they had to do it automatically, while the stereo played and the air conditioner kept the passengers cool. That kind of automatic operation can only be achieved with electronics. As a country, England is not known for it’s prowess in that field, but they pulled things off pretty well in the latest generation of Rovers. Rover applied electronics to many aspects of vehicle management. Let’s look carefully at one area – traction control. This system began as an outgrowth of the antilock brake system (ABS) sourced from Wabco of Germany for the upscale 1990 models. After using the ABS system alone for a few years, Rover upgraded to a fancier version that combined ABS and traction control. That system used the ABS wheel speed sensors to detect a slipping wheel that speeds up when traction was lost. The control unit then responded by applying brake pressure to a single wheel. By grabbing the slipping wheel, traction is transferred to the wheels that still had grip and the truck moved forward. At first, traction control was limited to the rear wheels, but by 1995 it was expanded to cover all four corners. Electronic traction control essentially took the place of mechanical front and rear differential locks. For the first time, a driver could enjoy the interior amenities as the car took care of itself in mud or snow. The electronic system engaged and disengaged as needed, so there were no worries about drivers leaving diff locks engaged and breaking things. The electronics also worked smoothly, preventing the broken axles and joints that come from aggressive use of hard mechanical locks. I was impressed by the system the first time I drove it, in a 1993 County LWB. The truck would begin to slip in mud or

snow, the traction control would begin buzzing, but the Rover just kept moving forward. It was remarkable, but it took some getting used to. When the system actuated, it made a loud noise, and your instinctive reaction was to let off the gas when you heard it; actually, the best thing to do was to hold steady. Once I learned to do that, I got great results with this system. That basic traction control served Land Rover well for ten years. The only trouble was – everyone else adopted similar electronic traction control systems, so the capability that was unique among four wheel drives in 1995 was common by 2005. If Land Rover wanted to stay ahead of the pack, something more was needed. That’s what led to the Terrain Response system that debuted in the new LR3 and Sport models. Terrain Response takes electronic vehicle management to a whole new level. Check out the way a new Sport handles wheel slip and you’ll see how far Land Rover has come. The first step remains the same – the wheel speed sensors detect a slipping wheel, and the controller applies a brake to stop the slippage. That was the end of the old system’s capability, now it’s just the beginning. As the load shifts to the other wheels, sensors monitor them, too. If more wheels begin to slip, but the vehicle is moving, the traction control program doesn’t just apply more brakes. It does something else – it tells the engine management system to reduce power so the slipping wheels can regain traction. The computer balances brake application with throttle modulation to keep the vehicle moving with minimum slippage. That combination makes for a significant jump in the system’s effectiveness. Earlier Land Rovers used a mechanical connection between the gas pedal and the engine. Today’s Rovers use a drive-bywire system, where the gas pedal sends a signal to a throttle control unit, which signals the engine management computer, which in turn sends a signal to the

electronic throttle. By going to drive-bywire, Land Rover engineers allowed the traction control system to control power output in marginal situations. In addition to backing off the gas to prevent wheel spin, the Terrain Response program reduces the speed at which the vehicle responds to the throttle. When the ground is slippery, everything has to be gentler to keep the wheels from spinning. A quick jab of the gas pedal will produce a snappy takeoff on pavement, but it will just dig a hole in packed snow. Terrain Response compensates for overenthusiastic drivers with very gentle acceleration in deep snow or mud. That response modulation is the first feature that sets Terrain Response apart from traction control in other brands. If the wheels continue to slip, the Terrain Response has yet another trick up its sleeve. The new Rovers use computer controlled air suspension. Now, that system is also called upon to increase traction. They achieve that by sending more pressure to the air springs at corners that are slipping. That presses the slipping wheels more firmly into the ground and helps the vehicle maintain its footing. It’s the computerized equivalent of piling a few guys on the back bumper to give slipping wheels traction. In addition, if the wheel is slipping because it’s in a deep rut, the system can shove the tire down several inches to find firm ground. When that happens, the

computer knows to raise the whole vehicle to keep it clear of rough ground later, and it does that automatically. As soon as the truck has good traction on level ground, all systems return to their normal modes. The whole thing is actually invisible to the driver, except for the results, which are remarkable. Last winter, I took my own Sport and my old ex-NATO ‘91 Defender into a snow covered meadow to compare traction. The Sport had stock Continental all-season tires. The Defender had Michelin XZL military tires, one of the gold standards of off roaders. The result? When it came to traction, electronics allowed the Sport to easily outperform the Defender. I was surprised, but the results spoke for themselves. The new Sport’s traction is impressive by any standard. Of course, the Defender still has the edge with skid plates, tire chains and a winch, but that wasn’t the purpose of this particular comparison. And you could always fit those things to a Sport if you were so inclined. In fact, I’m looking forward to the day a Sport enthusiast brings one to our shop for some serious off-road customization. I think the result will be very impressive. When the ground gets rough, the Terrain Response does even more. It modulates the throttle and the transmission to get up hills, and then it uses the brakes to automatically keep the vehicle from running away on the downgrades. It’s a little surprising the first time you experi-

ence it, as it chatters away, but there is no doubting the effectiveness of the system. All this interplay between suspension, engine, transmission, and brakes couldn’t take place without a sophisticated computer network. In a Rover, they call that network the CAN bus, short for Controller Area Network. CAN allows all the different computers in the car to share and exchange data, and it allows them so spread tasks across multiple systems. If Rover were to combine the electronic finesse of today’s Sport with the mechanical brute-force capability of the Defender, the result would be impressive indeed. The obvious question is – why don’t they do that? I believe the answer is twofold: ruggedness and serviceability. The electronics are great when they work, but you need fragile and expensive electronic testers to service the systems. That’s a problem in much of the world. There is also the issue of training service personnel to fix the electronic systems. In addition, the simple mechanical systems Land Rover built their name on are more rugged when there’s constant exposure to off road conditions. The electronics are great, though, for anyone who off-roads occasionally. (For more information, check out www.robisonservice.com or http:// jerobison.blogspot.com) P

[Mike Koch of the Rovers North staff has entertained readers with stories of his ex-MOD 109 and Range Rover Classic. Always looking for his next Land Rover, Mike tested the current range off-road at the Land Rover Experience, Mt. Equinox, Manchester, VT –ed.]

Story: Mike Koch Photos: Matt Martin

“As soon as we made the left on to Union Street in Manchester, we spotted the armada of shiny and stately silver Land Rovers we’d soon be driving off-road.”

Why must all my most memorable Land Rover weekend experiences begin with an alarm clock blaring in my ear at some ungodly hour? It really shouldn’t surprise me at this point. After getting myself together, I met up with some co-workers from Rovers North at the Pour House in South Burlington, VT for one of the greasiest –yet tasty - breakfasts in recent memory. Our group of four, Les Parker, Steve Haskell, Matt Martin and I loaded our larded-up selves into the vehicle and pointed it south down Route 7 towards Manchester, VT. Our destination: the Land Rover Experience Driving School at the posh Equinox resort, about 100 miles south of Westford, VT. Just south of Rutland, VT, we met up our fifth teammate from Rovers North, Calef Letorney, our specialist in Waxoyl products. As soon as we made the left on to Union Street in Manchester, we spotted the armada of shiny and stately silver Land Rovers we’d soon be driving off-road. The four Land Rovers in the line up included: an LR3, a Range Rover Sport, a Range Rover HSE and an LR2. The vehicles were as they left Solihull, sporting factory tires and impeccably clean. The latter issue would soon change. We proceeded into the retail shop where our instructors greeted us: Location Manager Josh Williams, Chuck Worrell, Cortland Wood, and Rick Serroro. We were impressed to learn that all four of our instructors were genuine Land Rover enthusiasts with personal Land Rover ownership experiences. After an introduction to the day’s off-road activities, we boarded our Land Rovers and convoyed out to the site of the 80-acre offroad course, consisting of about 5 miles of trails. The 80 acres are split into two sections: the front 40, featuring “purpose built” obstacles and the “back 40,” which remains in its more natural state, yet hosting a series of challenges. Josh Williams educated us with a most detailed explanation of the vehicles specifications and their off-road systems. He compared and contrasted the vehicles on and off-road

technologies in the current Land Rover line up. Owning a Range Rover Classic, I impulsively headed towards the Range Rover HSE, where Rick pointed out the off-road capabilities of the HSE. Needless to say, technology has come a long way since the days of the red and yellow transfer case levers in my military 109”. Each of the four Land Rovers went in separate directions, exploring all aspects of the trail network, rejoining momentarily up to swap drivers until we met up as a group and headed to lunch. We began our instruction on the “front 40” with side-hill traverses, ascents so steep that you only see the blue sky, descents so steep you are grateful for Hill Descent Control(HDC) and Gradient Release Control(GRC) systems, terrain so rocky that you are forced to explore the “Rock Crawl” mode on the Terrain Response System. The Land Rover handles all these situations with aplomb once you’ve selected the appropriate settings on the Terrain Response System’s five settings: General, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl. The HDC kept roughly 6,000 pounds of Range Rover HSE from uncontrollably barreling down steep descents without my foot ever making contact with the brake pedal. The Electronic Air Suspension(EAS) raised our vehicles and increased our approach and descent angles, also allowing for impressive suspension travel. The Electronic Throttle varied the accelerator pedal feel in accordance with our selection on the Terrain Response System. CommandShift manual gearbox control gave us plenty of drive train control, as we were instructed on the optimal gear selection to conquer obstacles with the greatest degree of poise. The 4-wheel Electronic Traction Control (4ETC) provided confidence inspiring traction even on the most slippery of terrain. Electronically controlled, infinitely variable locking center and rear differentials allowed us to climb to the heavens. Eventually, we made our way to the “back 40” and started mudding up the Land Rovers with a combination of dirt and water, in all their various forms. After an appetizing lunch break, we were back on the trails, making sure we were each able to sample driving each

Land Rover in the line-up. If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t have eaten so much as we headed back to tackle the trails immediately after lunch. As the afternoon hours passed ever so quickly, our instructors encouraged us to pick and choose the obstacles, instructing us only when we were nearing danger. Suddenly, it was someone’s bright idea to swap vehicles, extracting me from Land Rover’s flagship model and placing me at the controls of an LR2. After the initial shock of off-roading in the only current Land Rover lacking both EAS and low range, I began to enjoy maneuvering the LR2, to the point of admiring its off-road capabilities. Aside from its inability to clear only a couple tall obstacles that would have high-centered it due to its lack of EAS, the LR2 went everywhere the other Land Rovers did and its diminutive size made navigating between trees effortless. Piloting the LR2 was much better than expected, but the next vehicle was simply awesome. The Range Rover Sport seemed more Park Avenue, Manhattan, than Park in Field, Vermont, but I loved it. As with the LR2, my assumptions were proven wrong. It enabled me to drive anywhere and everywhere on the course with the greatest of ease. Sporting more of a positive outlook with each vehicle, my final conquest was the LR3, a vehicle I normally associate with

24

hauling small children both to and from the elementary school across the street from my house. The LR3 stood proudly alongside its brethren, showing me it too could tackle any terrain. When I first laid my eyes on the Land Rovers we’d be driving, adorned in their large diameter aluminum wheels, I’ll admit I thought the terrain would be far tamer than it actually was. Land Rover’s current model line-up surpassed my highest expectations and left me feeling that “go anywhere” is still top priority at Solihull. Solid axles, steel wheels and a forest of levers emanating from the floor are no longer the tools necessary for proper off-roading. Thanks to the Land Rover Experience Driving School at The Equinox and especially Josh, Chuck, Cortland and Rick. Thanks to Matt Martin for photographing the adventure. Oh, by the way, Matt, my apologies for leaving you behind on the trail. My enthusiasm for driving took over my better judgement and manners as I drove off, abandoning you in the woods on more than one occasion. Wow, I hope he didn’t take a photo of that! P

The Stories That Land Rovers Can Tell Story and Photo by: John Poole [John Poole, Olive Branch, MS, is a manufacturing engineer who lives outside of Memphis, TN, with his Land Rovers, an MG, a Triumph and his motorcycles. –ed.] he South has a heritage of storytelling and here in Mississippi, the home of William Faulkner, we do that as well as anyone. So here’s a story that only a Land Rover could tell. It’s been two years now since Paul, my father and my uncles Richard Poole and Keith Sumrall took me along on a trip to retrieve a most unusual Land Rover, a rare 1967 109” Dormobile with a 2.6 liter six cylinder engine. This Dormobile had traveled the world and ended up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The trip took seven hours from my home in Olive Branch, MS; about halfway into the trip, we stopped in Madison, MS, to pick up my uncles and to convoy the remaining distance to Baton Rouge. There, we met up with its owner, Mike Moore, who sat us down for a great story about the Rover. Every Land Rover owner has a soft spot for these camper versions of the Land Rover. The Dormobile was housed within the corporate confines of Martin Walter Limited, Folkestone, Kent. It took a conventional long wheelbase Land Rover and unbolted the metal top, replacing it with a fiberglass piece that would tilt upwards to one side. As it went up a folding canvas enclosure would elevate upward and leftward, exposing an angled roof. That gave you standing headroom and another berth for sleeping. With the removal of the front seat bulkhead the Dormobile’s special “Dormatic” seats would fold down into bed or seats around an inside table. Water tanks, a small sink, a stove, electric lights –even a chemical toilet - and cupboards

T

completed the self-enclosed camper. It seems you could even purchase special teapots, cups, saucers, even cutlery unique to the Dormobile. If you can visualize an old VW Camper, then you have the outline in your mind of a Dormobile. This particular Dormobile was built for a Mr. Peck, an eccentric Canadian who believed that nuclear annihilation was inevitable. To survive the end of the world as he knew it, he bought many acres and constructed a compound in the wilds of British Columbia. There he installed a hydroelectric generator to assure power and purchased the Dormobile for survival transportation. The 2.6 six-cylinder engine was the largest Rover would install in the Land Rover at the time; while it had great torque and extra horsepower over the 2.25 liter four-cylinder, its pre-war design rendered it a poor choice for long-term, full throttle running. Nevertheless, it would propel the Rover effectively. To further bolster the vehicle, Peck also ordered the stronger ENV axles front and rear. As a custom feature, this Dormobile includes a wine rack and extra cabinetry in lieu of some seating. There were also brackets installed so the folding table could be used, under an awning, outdoors in nice weather. When the world avoided nuclear warfare, Peck decided to travel the world in his Dormobile. As was the custom of world travelers in the ‘60’s, he painted the name of each nation he visited: England, Scotland, Switzerland, Wales, France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. You can still see the faded outline of Arabic script on the roof that loosely translates into “We’re your friends.” One can only assumed it worked as Peck returned with his Dormobile to Canada. He remained in British Columbia until his death in 1991. The Dormobile then wound up as an expedition vehicle for Green Road Wilderness Expeditions. Ray Wood’s company would take sportsmen and adventurers deep into the forests of British Columbia, and the Dormobile proved a useful addition to his fleet of 109”s. Within a year, Mike continued, he had seen the Dormobile advertised in Hemmings Motor News. With my uncle Richard (who also owns a Dormobile) he flew up to Vancouver, BC, intent on purchasing the car. Showing all the usual caution of a Land Rover enthusiast Mike purchased it on the spot. In the GRWE shop, Mike installed new brakes and a set of new springs to ready it for the trip home. Without hesitation Mike and Richard now set out on the 2,000 mile trip to Louisiana. There was some puzzlement at the Canadian border as the officials tried to determine why two Americans were driving a car with Canadian license plates, full of spare parts and luggage, out of their country. After some delicate negotiations,

they were allowed to leave Canada and proceed on the week-long trip to Baton Rouge. Mike recounted many trips in the Dormobile - including his honeymoon. When the unique fuel pump failed, Mike searched high and low for an exact replacement. “I wanted to keep it original,” he noted, “and not use a replacement pump.” As family responsibilities piled up, Mike accepted Richard’s offer to store this Dormobile right next to Richard’s ’65 Dormobile in Mississippi. After Mike’s tale, we looked at the Dormobile with a newfound respect. We pulled the car out from under a lean-to, feeling the yank of a stuck front wheel. Pulling the car forward did not free the brake but a tug on the rear of the car released the shoes on the drum. We put the Dormobile on a trailer and brought it back to Mississippi. We’re moving forward gently with the car. Turning the engine with a crank demonstrates its not stuck, even though it has not been run in many years. We’ll sort out the brakes and hydraulics, check the fuel system, change out all the fluids, and have her running in no time. Right now, the two Dormobiles are undoubtedly telling stories with each other and sharing their tales of travel with the MGB-GT, Triumph TR-4A and motorcycles housed in the same shed. Then it will be ready for new adventures, and probably, more tall tales. P

CORNER

[Bill Burke is an internationally recognized 4WD trainer and was a US team member in the 1991 Camel Trophy. His company, Bill Burke’s 4-Wheeling America, trains individuals and certifies professional instructors through the International 4-Wheel Driver Trainers’ Association –ed]

Getting stuck might be entertaining at a local rally, but it’s a serious problem when out in remote areas, alone. Last issue I reviewed the technical issues of winches. This time, I want you to join me at a training session on the recovery process. And because, knowledge is power, I’ve included some new vocabulary at the end of the column. Recently in Arizona, I trained a company’s drivers on winch safety. We had a Ford F450 stuck in a sandy wash with about half the tire depth in the soft sand spinning away digging to oblivion it seemed. This truck had a 500 gallon tank full of propane mounted on its flatbed. Yep, these guys deliver propane to remote microwave and communications tower sites via roads that make Elephant Hill and the Khyber Pass look like an autobahn! For situations such as this, I recommend a Stuck Assessment and a clear calculation of the Mire Factor when they get bogged down. Here’s what to do: Stuck Assessment Steps Follow the three P’s – Patience, Plan and Practice. Patience means that when you’re bogged down, almost stuck or totally stuck, take time to breathe deeply and have some patience. Most people panic, jump out of the vehicle and begin to haphazardly rig for the extraction. Instead, take a deep breath, check the vehicle systems and gauges, and ensure the engine can continue to run properly. You may have to keep the engine revved up a bit. Is the vehicle stable so when you exit it will not slide or slip? 34

Then begin the Plan stage while you are inside the vehicle assessing the situation from the driver’s seat. For example, if your passenger leaves will the dynamic of the movement cause the vehicle to slide off the cliff or roll onto its side? As you exit the vehicle, Planning continues with a Stuck Assessment. Take a 360 degree look around your vehicle, underneath and above it, too. Give it a thorough inspection so you can assess just how stuck you are. Is the transfer case hung up on a tree stump? Are the tires just digging in the sand? Is the rear diff hung up on a rock? A good Stuck Assessment, backed up with a quality Plan, will allow the extrication to run smoothly. Your Plan will include the Mire Factor, what equipment you will use, which way the vehicle will be moved, who is in charge (incident commander), who will be in the driver’s seat (if possible) and contingencies (in case Murphy’s Law jumps in!). Then put it into Practice. Practice really starts with trying out your equipment at home, making sure you know how it works, sounds, handles and the safety aspects involved. Make certain that your equipment is broken in, lubricated and in good working condition. Familiarity with recovery equipment will also make you look good in the field, where you have to know how to handle it efficiently in that nasty mud hole at 11:30pm! Mire Factor is a term that accounts for the several contributing factors as to why a vehicle is stuck. Those factors involve statistics relating to: Gross Vehicle Weight, tire depth in soil, number of tires in soil, consistency of soil, condition of

soil – frozen vs. wet vs. dry, type of soil – clay, grass, sand, rock, etc. - gradient of slope, adhesion factors (suction), and weather conditions. Basically it relates to when we look under the truck in the mud bog and state: “Shucky down Bubba, we’re mired down good this time! Go get the tractor, JD.” Now, back to Arizona, where getting that propane truck unstuck from the soft, dry sand took some serious planning. We had two vehicles with Superwinch 16.5K winches on them that we positioned slightly apart, rigged up the ropes and set some sand ladders (I use MAXTRAX) under the propane truck’s rear tires to help raise the frame up off the sand as it moved back. We also had to set a Pull-Pal to anchor one of the winch rigs since it wanted to move toward the propane truck. As we winched the propane truck back to terra firma we kept alternating the MAXTRAX (we had 4) under the rear tires which kept the heavy vehicle from sinking again. This effort helped reduce the Mire Factor once the propane truck started moving. The winching effort was pretty sizeable at first since there was a lot of dead weight to move. The Mire Factor involved the very heavy vehicle, soft dry sand, all tires half way down on a level surface. And let’s not forget about that darn propane tank being full! It was a typical sunny day in the Sonoran Desert. Once the initial pull got the vehicle rolling the winch trucks had an easier time of it. I had the driver of the propane truck slightly load the torque converter while in reverse gear. This kept the drive train slightly moving but not spinning. It helped with the lessening of the resistance. Sometimes the initial effort to move stuck vehicles can overpower recovery equipment if that equipment is not specced correctly. A standard SUV that has a curb weight of 4200 pounds might require an initial effort of 8400 pounds to get the vehicle moving. Once that vehicle starts moving it becomes “rolling resistance” and can be as low as 1000 pounds of drag. Factors vary on all recovery scenarios, of course. That is why I usually recommend most winches be purchased based on 1.5 times the gross vehicle weight as a starting point. Work effort can be lessened by using a pulley block in the rigging. Understanding the rating capacities of the equipment being utilized for the rigging during any extraction operation is ultimately important. Make sure the winch, jacks, attachment devices and attachment points are all rated with the proper WLL [working load limit] and have met industry standards for Proof Testing and Design Factor conditions. See you on the trail, ‘cause you won’t be stuck that long, right? P

Vocabulary: Design Factor: An industry term denoting a product’s theoretical reserve capability usually computed by dividing the catalog ultimate load by the WLL. Generally expressed as a ratio, e.g. 5 to 1 or 5:1; also denoted as a Design Safety Factor. Tackle Block: (or Block) An assembly consisting of a sheave, side plates, and generally an end fitting. An end fitting can consist of a hook, shackle or eye. Also known as “tackle block and sheave” assembly (herein referred to as TB&S). Side plates may also be referred to as the “cheeks” of the block. Sheave or Sheave and Bearing Assembly: A wheel with a grooved rim for wire or rope to run on while transmitting force during lifting or hauling. Usually used to guide or change the direction of the rope or wire. Sheaves are configured with a central hub that supports different type uses and will be machined with a plain bore or with a bearing surface. Plain Bore: very slow line speed, very infrequent use, low load, merely a hole bored in the center of the sheave. Bronze Bushing: slow line speed, moderate load, moderate use. Roller Bearing: faster line speed, more frequent use, greater load. Comes in tapered rollers or straight rollers machined to facilitate the shaft applicable to the block use. Snatch Block: A type of TB&S that allows the user to open the block to thread the line without removing attachments on the line end. Snatch blocks are intended for infrequent and intermittent use with slow line speeds. Most commonly used TB&S in 4x4 vehicle recovery. Pulley: The common or “laypersons” term for a grooved wheel. See Sheave. Reeving: A term used to describe the path of the rope through a system of blocks (or one block). A reeving diagram is a pictorial rendering of the desired path for the rope. (part of the 3 p’s) Shackle: Industry standards dictate the use of Screw Pin Shackles which can be used for “in-line” pulling as well as loads where “side-loading” may occur. Side-loads will decrease the rated capacity. Never let the screw pin rotate under “live line” while in application. There are shackles applicable to chain, sling and general usage. Use only shackles with markings forged into the product. Look for markings like WLL or SWL with a tonnage designation such as: 4.75T or 6.5T. Style names like Bow or “D” are common terms. “D” type looks like a d when held sideways. Bow types are more rounded and more common to 4-wheelers. There are “pin” type shackles that utilize “cir-clip” type closures. Only use Screw Pin type shackles. Size and rating designations appropriate for the vehicle at minimal 1.5 times the GVW. Gross Vehicle Weight: GVW, GVWR(rating), GA(xle)WR, C(ombined)AWR – are all applicable to helping decide how much the vehicle might weigh when loaded. The best way is to get to a truck scale – try a movers’ warehouse, truck stop scale, salvage yard, land fill – they will weigh your vehicle for a few dollars. Load it up for the three day trip, kids and dogs, cooler and gear. Then write this number with a sharpie on the drivers door jam for future reference. 35

Sw-e-e-t Land Rover Story & Photos by: Mike Thede

[Mike Thede is a retired Conservation Officer living near Owen Sound, Ontario. He has owned his Land Rover since it was new and currently uses it for cutting firewood and making maple syrup –ed.] 44

B

ack in 1969, I began looking for a good four by four vehicle to use as a daily transport as well as hunting and fishing trips. My neighbor had a 1963 LWB which he let me drive occasionally; I was quite taken by the Land Rover because of its uniqueness. I looked over the other vehicles available: the International Scout, the Ford Bronco, the Jeepster and the Chevy Blazer. These North American vehicles were all priced a little higher than the Land Rover, got much poorer gas mileage and came with less equipment. The Chevy dealer asked, “Do you want a roof with that? and then informed me that would be $700. I thought about driving a topless Blazer in the land of the great white north and then made tracks for my Land Rover dealer. Actually, the Land Rover was the vehicle I wanted from the start. On January 3, 1969, I purchased my new Series II-A from British United Automobiles in downtown Toronto, which also sold Jaguars. I have been driving my IIA daily since then. It cost $3000 complete with a tow hitch, AM radio and deluxe interior. At the time it was my only vehicle, so it saw services as daily transport and for hunting and fishing trips. Unfortunately, my image of the indestructible Land Rover was severely tarnished when in 1979 I discovered severe rust on the frame. The vehicle only had 48,000 miles and 9 years of service on it, so it was hard to understand why this much corrosion had taken place. I took the vehicle to a professional welder friend of mine and asked him to repair it. I was more than slightly disappointed when he said there was no frame left onto which to weld new steel! He went on to suggest we simply build a new frame. I could hardly believe my ears but eventually we built a completely new frame from scratch. The main frame rails were made with 10 gauge steel, approximately 1/8 inch thick and heavier than the original material. The rear cross member, front cross member and the large member at the front rear spring hangers were made from 11 gauge steel. The crossmembers under the engine and transmission were welded up from heavy walled 2 inch square tubing. Spring hangers were cut from 3/16 inch plate. Shock absorber mounts were made from heavy walled steel tubing. Outriggers were of 14 gauge steel. I made cardboard patterns

and drawings from the old frame and transferred the information to sheets of new steel. The pieces were cut out and welded together. The frame was totally closed in with only the necessary bolt holes drilled so that no mud and water could enter. To my mind Land Rover frames came from the factory with many unnecessary holes to collect dirt and water. After completion, the frame was sandblasted, painted with epoxy primer, two coats of Tremclad, and undercoated. This frame has been on the road, winter and summer, for 26 years and has only required a welding repair to the left front outrigger. Would I build another frame from scratch? At the time I had no idea I could have obtained a new frame from England. It would depend on whether or not one was paying full price for welding services or if you could do it yourself and how much fun you would have doing it. A new galvanized frame would probably be the better way to go but not nearly as challenging! I also did a lot of rebuilding of other parts over the 3 years the truck was out of service. Everything (driveshafts, axles,

45

wheel hubs, springs, radiator, brake system, clutch system, body, doors, window frames) was dismantled, inspected and overhauled if needed. A new cover was made for the back end of the rear differential as it had rusted through completely. New toeboards and lower doorposts were made and welded to the bulkhead; now I know I could have purchased them too. The engine was dismantled and given a ring and valve job. I installed a stainless steel exhaust system and stainless steel studs for the exhaust manifold to pipe connection with stainless nuts and bolts on the rest of the pipe connections. I can take apart my exhaust system anytime, like it was put together yesterday. I also put in a new Fairey overdrive.

46

Many places where Land Rover thought it was acceptable to place steel and aluminum together needed severe repairing. Door channels were replaced on the bottoms of all 3 doors. New aluminum was applied to the bottoms of the front doors. The steel spare tire hanger on the back door was removed and a new skin was made and applied to the door as the original was corroded through. I did not put the tire hanger back on. The seat base was repaired on both ends and a new aluminum tool box was made and installed. Yes, I know that steel has more strength than aluminum, but why Land Rover would install a steel tool box to an aluminum seat base? Any places I put aluminum and steel together I placed a thick layer of caulking between them and have had no trouble with corrosion since then. Of course this was a major learning experience and quickly illustrated the “rebuildability of the design. I can remember having my first Meccano set when I was 5 years old and the Land Rover is certainly the ultimate toy in that department. This rebuild cost me $2500 and a lot of my time but it has been worth every penny. I have always had an interest in maple syrup since I was young. When I retired from being a Conservation Officer in 1997, I decided to make maple syrup commercially with a small operation. My Land Rover is essential to the syrup operation. I make syrup in a slow and old fashioned way, so the Land Rover fits right in.

I live in a 50 acre hard maple bush on the southern end of Georgian Bay on the Niagara Escarpment near Owen Sound, Ontario. It is a natural place for a syrup operation. It is also a natural place to use the Land Rover in a farming operation- the original purpose of these versatile vehicles. Boiling maple sap requires a lot of firewood and I also heat my house totally with firewood so cutting, winching and hauling firewood is a big job and the Land Rover is necessary for this activity. Sap is collected from sugar maple trees, and boiled down to a sugar concentration of 66 degrees Brix. At this point it is officially maple syrup. It takes 50 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. This ratio can range throughout the season from 40:1 to 60:1. It takes a lot of patience to run a syrup operation, but then it takes a lot of patience to operate a 39 year old vehicle too.

“Of course this was a major learning experience and quickly illustrated the ‘rebuildability’ of the design. I can remember having my first Meccano set when I was 5 years old and the Land Rover is certainly the ultimate toy in that department” In my operation, the sap is pumped into a 45 gallon barrel inside the Land Rover and transported to the sugar shack. I used to use two 45 gallon barrels on the truck but when I went through two sets of springs in two years, I went to one barrel. My bush trail has deteriorated into a deeply rutted track so the Land Rover is perfect for hauling sap and firewood. In fact, without the Land Rover I would need a 4 wheel drive tractor and a pick up truck to do the same type of bush work and also have an additional vehicle for highway use. The sap is boiled inside the sugar shack on an 80 year old pan excavated from a neighboring farm where the current owner’s great grandfather used it to make syrup. I made my own fireplace to fit this pan. This is a very slow system and takes between 14 and 18 hours to boil 4 barrels of sap down to syrup. The variation in time is due to the sugar content of the sap, (it can change daily), atmospheric conditions, the quality of the firewood and the amount of help available – most days there is no help. Some days, we have to slow down for repairs to the syrup equipment or the Land Rover. Four barrels of sap generally produce about 16 quarts of syrup which is then filtered and bottled and sold here at home.

We get tourists and school groups here to see the operation and usually somebody asks if they can buy the Land Rover. I always reply that it is not for sale as I am taking it with me to my next destination. The longer I own it the better I like it. The design is ingenious and it is still the only vehicle one can use as a tractor in the bush and immediately after drive it on the highway at reasonable highway speeds. I rebuilt the engine 9 years ago at 100,000 miles and have put another 50,000 miles on it since. There are also thousands of engine hours of “bush use” which don’t show up on the odometer. Although there is always something to fix on it (today I am replacing a front frame spring bushing), I have enjoyed driving it for 39 years and it has only left me stopped on the highway once (my wife has had it quit on her 3 times, but that’s another story). I expect to keep my Land Rover as long as I am driving --- and keep maintaining it too. P

BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL By Jeffrey B. Aronson

While driving the QE I, my ’66 Series II-A 88” SW, down Vermont’s I- 91 late one winter, I noticed the power dropping off dramatically. Good fortune dictated that this would happen right near a rest area so I coasted in and opened the hood. Nothing looked amiss electrically so I pulled a spark plug, and then all four. Each plug resembled a licorice stick. A sooty, oily gunk covered up what should have been the electrode gap. I cleaned each plug in turn, screwed them back in, started up the car and continued on my way. Two questions sprang to mind. How did the plugs get so coated, and how on earth did the car keep running? The latter question underscores one of the endearing qualities of Land Rovers. Unlike their owners, they don’t show their age. Long after its mechanical condition dictates it should be parked Land Rovers, Range Rovers and Discoverys continue to muddle through. While my back was killing me from splitting firewood, the Rover ran – albeit hesitating and underpowered - as if it had received proper service from its owner. My “garage” consists of an open plot surrounded by ocean and trees – lovely in the warmer months but miserable in the endless snow and cold of this winter. So when the opportunity arose for me to tune-up the Rover in a heated building, I jumped at the chance. Before jealously sets in, please note that this luxury came with a price. The building houses our local electric co-op’s line crew’s equipment and at the end of every work day, the 5-man crew and a gaggle of local fishermen, carpenters, plumbers and electricians file in. Ever on the lookout for entertainment, they allowed me inside to work on the Rover. 50

Much merriment ensued as I lifted up the hood, stood on a milk crate and reached over to remove the air cleaner and distributor cap. “I’ve never seen a Land Rover with its hood down,” cried one audience member to the evident delight of the others. “Where do you keep the hamster?” said another as the audience convulsed in laughter. “What are you doing, lubricating the rubber band?” called out one wit, as audience members knees slapped all around him. It sounded like the laugh track in a Monty Python skit. Their sore throats, parched from sending out insults and guffawing with merriment, received the soothing caress of liquids generally associated with Clydesdales. As I progressed from the oil change to the ignition tune-up, their restored vocal chords found new ways to express their pleasure. You can only imagine the reaction when I pulled out the hand crank from behind the seat and called for one of the skeptics to turn the engine slowly as I observed the points opening on the top of the distributor cam lobe. A crank? These guys have pickups with electric windows and automatic door locks! For a change, I gapped the points correctly, got the firing order correct on the new cap and remembered to install the rotor before clamping on the cap. The car started right up and reminded me just how sweet the sound of a tuned 2.25 can be. It also garnered a curtain call razzing from the well-entertained audience. That night on the radio news, I heard that Citibank will pay the New York Mets $400 million over 20 years to put its name on the Mets’ new stadium in New York City. We’re all shareholders now in Citibank, so as business partners I ask your permission to have Citi transfer its naming rights from the stadium to my newly-planned, shovel –ready heated garage project here on the island. It will cost far, far less than $400 million and I won’t have to be the island’s entertainment at every scheduled maintenance. Winter in New England has brought avalanches of snow and gusts of cold this season, limiting outdoor work to cutting up blown down trees and splitting firewood. It’s also a great time to watch DVDs by the woodstove. Always looking for more information on Land Rovers, I found myself viewing Tanya Roberts [Charlie’s Angels, Bond girl] in Sheena, as in Queen of the Jungle. Well, she’s certainly not George of the Jungle. This 1984 British epic answers several long-running questions: to wit, can a scantily-clad woman riding bareback on a zebra chase down a Series III 109”; can

a homemade arrow pierce the seatback bulkhead of a 109”, can an early Range Rover, driven by a sportscaster and his cameraman, follow an elephant and a scantily-clad woman riding a zebra through the jungle and can a 109” driven by a heroic television sports reporter smash into and flip over another 109” driven by former NFL placekicker-now evil prince of an African country? The answer in each case is, “yes.” I also learned that the excellent forward vision of the Range Rover enables the driver and passenger to have a spectacular view of a lioness and a scantily-clad woman when they jump on the hood of the car. We all know that the twin-SU carb 3.5 could be hard to start when hot; this was accurately portrayed when the mercenaries attacked the scantily-clad woman and the sportscaster. As they ran off through the forest the cameraman drove away on his mission, I’m pleased to report that the Range Rover withstood machine gun fire as well as a grenade – but you knew that already. As befits a movie shot in Kenya there are lots of Land Rovers, African wildlife and stunning scenery in the movie, which help make up for the lame dialogue. Scroll through the credits and you’ll find that Lorenzo Semple, Jr. (of Batman and Carlton the Doorman fame) helped write the screenplay. That would explain the scene in which the television sports reporter, riding bareback on the zebra with Sheena, says to her “Your hair smells fantastic. What do you use for a shampoo?” Joe Bob Briggs, the preeminent arbiter of drive-in and ultimate B movies, gave Sheena 4 out of 5 stars. If you’re tired of The Gods Must Be Crazy, I recommend it. The high winds this season have assured vultures like me a good supply of firewood, as long as I take my Land Rover into the woods to cut up the blown down trees. Not long ago, I backed the II-A down a slope off a dirt lane to pile newly cut wood into the car. The forest floor was soft and the Rover’s nose stuck up at a 30 degree angle. I started to load up the wood I had cut when a neighbor drove down the lane in his Chevy 4x4 pickup. He looked at the Rover and asked if I needed a tow. I asked him, “Why?” “You mean you drove the Rover down there.” he asked? “I wouldn’t take my truck there;” this from a man who owns three GM pickups, all used for snowplowing. Too bad he doesn’t own a Land Rover. Meanwhile, this February much of England, Scotland and Wales seemed paralyzed for a few days under the sudden onslaught of 10-20 inches of snow. Boris Johnson, the Lord Mayor of London, had to admit the city owns no snowplows and cancelled out all double-decker bus service because of slippery roads. Tube and train service was seriously curtailed. Graciously he agreed to lift the “congestion tax,” a fee on vehicular traffic in central London aimed largely at Land

Rovers and similar SUV’s. He actually applauded those drivers “who decided to come into work this day despite the weather.” It’s good to acknowledge Land Rovers, isn’t it? As Land Rover enthusiasts here know, owning a Land Rover eliminates weather as an excuse for not getting to work during a storm. Nationally the UK government must pay attention to Land Rover, too. From 2004-2007, Land Rover set records including their first-ever sale of over 200,000 vehicles in a single year. In 2008 Land Rover saw sales tumble by 18% to 185,000 vehicles. Land Rover is projecting fewer sales in 2009. Like US-based auto companies, Land Rover has reduced its workforce, shut down factories for longer periods than usual and instituted reduced work weeks. Together Land Rover and Jaguar employ over 15,000 people in the UK. In November 2008, Land Rover officials called for their government to assist the auto industry with loans totaling just under $3 billion. After some grumbling, that wealthy and Indian parent Tata should pay more for their adopted children Land Rover and Jaguar, Britain did extend credit to Land Rover. The UK kept only about 38,000 Land Rovers of all models in 2008. Land Rover still exports 78% of all its vehicles to 169 countries, an astounding feat for such a small automobile company. Let’s hope this success keeps the Defender around and produced in Great Britain, and eventually, back in the USA. For all the genuine economic challenges we confront, the good news your - Land Rover, Range Rover, Discovery, LR 3 or Freelander - is in your garage. Be thankful you didn’t choose a Toyota Land Cruiser. The New York Times called the 2009 Land Cruiser an “old friend who seems to have ballooned to almost unrecognizable dimensions... a temple of tumescence.” The reviewer asks “Why did Toyota reduce the new model’s ground clearance, and the approach, departure and break-over angles that are so crucial in hard-core off-roading? A height-adjustable suspension might have compensated for those losses, but one is not offered. Another head-scratcher: Why is the housing of the rear differential made of lightweight (and relatively fragile) aluminum?” Good questions, all. Instead, anyone fancy a 2007 Range Rover? It seems that Bernard Madoff, the financier whose $50 billion Ponzi scheme collapsed this winter, needs to reduce expenses. Each year he shelled out $117,329 for leases on: the Range Rover, a 2009 Mercedes S550 [leased in October, 2008, no less], a 2008 Cadillac DTS, a 2007 Mercedes S550, a 2008 Mercedes GL450 sport-utility vehicle and a 2006 Lexus. When you’re under 24-hour house arrest, the need for multiple vehicles diminishes somewhat. P 51

Story & Photos by: Josh Williams | Land Rover Experience

[Josh Williams, Manchester, VT, calls serving as the Location Manager for the Land Rover Experience at the Equinox – in other words, going off road in new Land Rovers all day – “work.” He provides an update on the newest Land Rovers for us –ed.]

et me say right off, there was a time when I favored the Discovery. After graduating from Montreat College in North Carolina in 2004, I started working for The Land Rover Experience at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. There my vehicle of choice was the Discovery. We also used Range Rovers and Freelanders - but I preferred the Discovery. The Discovery proved itself a great vehicle to learn the “ins” and “outs” of Land Rover. It taught me how to bleed green in more ways than one! At tremendous driving locations like the Greenbrier [VA] and Biltmore Estate I learned to hear and to feel the vehicle. From the driver’s seat of the Discovery I feel like I’m on top of the world and there is nothing like the sound of the V8 - to this day I hear a Discovery well before I see it. At our school in Quebec, Land Rover launched the LR3, an all-new vehicle from the ground up. At first sight of the LR3 I thought, “This thing is nowhere near as capable or as rugged as the Discovery.” Man, was I wrong! The LR3 incorporates many styling elements of the Discovery and brings them into the future. The product of an

L

For example, I always felt like I had to crawl to get into a Discovery, especially in the middle seats. With the LR3, it’s easy in and easy out. The rear doors open wider and you don’t feel wedged getting into the back. The new tailgate, replacing the 5th door, is much easier to access with stuff in your hands. [It also provides a great place to sit while putting on your mud boots! – ed.] It might seem petty, but the 11 cup holders and 2 gloves boxes are needed touches. Indeed they fill up quickly. The LR3 also has many other finer touches that make a big difference. The tailgate of the LR3 offers a good example of one such upgrade. “Jeep,” my beagle, loves to ride in the back of my ’91 Range Rover Classic. Every morning my workout starts early when I load him in the back. The tailgate of the Classic has no hydraulic assist and feels like it’s filled with cement. While great for building biceps it’s not so good on the back. Land Rover removed this inconvenience in the LR3 by adding a cable to a spring-loaded roller, which equalizes much of the tailgate weight for gentle lowering and easy lifting. If only my Classic had such an amenity! The best improvements of the LR3 are where it counts most, in the drive train and off-road capabilities! Let’s start with

obvious evolution, the silhouette of the Discovery remains recognizable in the LR3. Inside the LR3 has all the best features of the Discovery: The tall, upright seating, stadium view for the passengers and the ability to look down the hood and see the corners of the vehicle. But, the LR3 does more than just pay homage to the Discovery; it fixes all those details we wanted to change about the Discovery.

the transmission. The LR3 features an automatic transmission with Adaptive Shift Strategy that uses sensors to calculate the way the vehicle is being driven and then adapts the gear change points accordingly. The system is programmed to give the driver maximum response when driving aggressively, but maximum economy when driving at a more leisurely pace. Sensors calculate driving style by reading acceleration, engine speed,

54

JOSH WILLIAMS INSTRUCTING

engine torque, pedal position and wheel speeds. Using these signals, the system selects the most appropriate shift pattern to match the current driving style. This transmission also helps protect the engine. In high range, it will automatically shift up or down to prevent overrevving or stalling. In low range, this feature is overridden to allow the vehicle to move off in higher gear, which can be useful in slippery conditions. The driver-selectable modes within the transmission are: Normal, Sport and CommandShift. The rest are automatically selected as a response to driving conditions: Hill Decent Control Mode, Cruise, Hill, Reverse lock-out, Cooling strategy, Curve recognition, fast off recognition, Emergency “Limp Home” and Terrain Response Mode (which adapts vehicle performance to deliver optimum performance for driver-selected terrain). Driving in more extreme off-road conditions traditionally requires more intervention by the driver (for example, locking the differential). If you lack knowledge and experience, offroading can be stressful. With Terrain Response, it’s “like having and expert alongside the driver,” helping get the best performance for the conditions. A few of the systems that Terrain Response controls include: Engine Management, Transmission, Electronic Differentials, Hill Decent Control, Gear Range, Electronic Traction Control, Dynamic Stability Control, and the Air Suspension. Terrain Response optimizes

the electronic systems to suit the conditions, allowing the driver to concentrate on controlling the vehicle. As long as the driver selects the right terrain setting, the vehicle will enhance the off road experience. And… if you were thinking about it… Don’t cut any wires! Most of the LR3’s wiring is fiber optic. As a V-8 lover, I welcome the new 4.4-liter engine. It delivers smooth and responsive performance. The power train also demonstrates good environmental performance in CO2 output and other emissions. Equally important is the ability to run on a variety of lubricants with long distances between oil changes. The 4.4-liter V8 engine also improves low end torque over the preceding 4.2 engine. This new engine features a greater use of lightweight components, variable valve timing, multi-hole fuel injectors, exhaust gas recirculation and electronic throttle control. To achieve improved on-road performance, the LR3 has an electronically controlled air suspension system similar to that of the Range Rover. The all-independent suspension on LR3 results in lower unsprung weight, providing a smoother ride and better handling. Off-road the air suspension lifts the vehicle, providing greater ground clearance and better approach, departure and ramp break-over angles. Off-roading in a stock LR3 you can lift more than 4 inches above normal ride height. In low range the air suspension will mimic a solid axle using cross-link, which enables the air spring pressure to 55

be balanced, maximizing off-road agility while maintaining onroad handling, precision and response. My favorite feature of the LR3 has to be the infinitely variable electronic locking center and rear differentials. The infinitely variable electronic locking center differential comes standard (a rear system is optional) and gives LR3 impressive off-road abilities. What’s the advantage over the familiar manual locking system? More conventional limited slip and torquesensing, differentials always try to transfer torque from one wheel to another on the same axle whenever there is a difference in wheel speed. In most situations this is exactly what is required, but there are some circumstances where this is unhelpful. An electronically controlled differential can behave in whichever manner is most appropriate for the individual circumstances and allow the differential to be ‘open’, ‘locked’ or any degree of ‘limited slip’ in between. For example: Imagine that one rear wheel loses traction while climbing a hill. With a conventional limited Slip or Torsen differential, traction control would operate to brake the spinning wheel and transfer more torque to the opposite wheel. If that wheel then loses traction, more braking force will be applied to transfer drive to the front axle. However, the driver is now trying to drive uphill with the brakes on – slowing the vehicle down, losing momentum and possibly failing to complete the hill climb. With the LR3’s infinitely variable electronic locking center and rear differential, the ABS sensors detect the spinning wheel, trigger the differential control system to transfer torque to the wheels with traction – but do not apply the brakes; traction is regained and full engine torque remains available to climb the hill. Or, imagine that you are descending a steep, slippery hill. With a Limited Slip differential or Torsen differential, braking one wheel will cause some braking force to be transferred to the opposite wheel, which in turn may need to be braked further if it is trying to lock. The electronic differential are switched to ‘open’ when Hill Descent Control is in operation, so braking forces applied to an individual wheel do not affect any others. 56

The new Land Rovers make it possible to control your offroading pace more than ever. In many conditions with the older Land Rovers, “putting some wellie to it” was proper offroading technique. While the Wellie on the accelerator helps get through obstacles, it also increases the likelihood of vehicle damage. With the LR3 I more often use the “point and squirt” technique, using left foot on the brake and the right on the gas. The computer sorts out the inputs providing proper torque and the slow speeds to conquer the obstacle without vehicle damage. The LR3 makes off-roading or trailering easier with improved transfer case operation. The LR3’s transfer box can go from high range to low range without bringing the vehicle to a stop. We’re not talking about walking pace but speeds in excess of 30 MPH! Whether you drive the flagship Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport, the LR3 or the most advanced Land Rover, the LR2, the Land Rover core values of marque we all love remain the same. Land Rover is as off-road-centric as ever, only today we see computers and fiber optics behind the green (and sometimes black) oval. And because this technology is designed for off-road it’s durable. I would not ask you to dunk your new Mac Book Pro into a mud hole, but I will ask you to do that to your new Land Rover. Land Rover likes to say that it leads in iconic design, environmental innovation, and the breadth of capability; the current Land Rover lineup certainly backs up these claims off-road. Visit any of the Land Rover Experience Driving Schools across North America; we love to help new enthusiasts enter the world of off road exploration in their Land Rovers or share experiences with the seasoned off-roader. Join the 6,000 enthusiasts annually who participate in the Land Rover Experience programs held at the Equinox, Manchester VT, the Biltmore, Asheville, NC , the Quail Lodge, Carmel, CA, or the Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello, Montebello, QC, Canada. We’d enjoy sharing off-road adventures with you. P

SIGHTINGS This season’s NFL playoffs and Super Bowl brought huge viewership –even without the New England Patriots - and, not surprisingly, many Land Rovers in advertisements. The Ladders, an executive recruitment firm, put a Series Rover bounding after a stampede of office chairs. Jeff Pearl, Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Paul Duray, Rockville, MD, Maurice Patrykus, Ventura, CA, Dave Bowman, Orange, VA, Michael Willaford, Raleigh, NC, Chris Schramm, Norcross, GA, Jeff Foland, Clarksville, OH, James Darga, Plymouth, MA, Leslie Bright, Kingsport, TN, Robert Levelle, Clarkston, WA, John Keeney, Lanham, MD, Dick Newton, Charlestown, RI, Greg Akin, Abilene, TX, Ross Newcombe, Fairbanks, AK, Tony Sims, Beaverton, OR, and Greg Vogel, Monkton, MD. (Bud Lane, Bill Johnson, Bill Young, and Tom DeCourcy, please see Rule #6). No doubt spurred by L.L. Bean, Eddie Bauer’s latest catalogue featured a Defender 110. Tessa Jones, “age 13,” Fairview, NC, Thomas Castaldo, Lakewood, NY, Nick Kosiek, Orange Park, FL, Robert Alley, Kennesaw, GA, David Downing, Springfield, MO, John Keeney, Lanham, MD, Sherry Block, Hadlyme, CT, Allen de Stieguer, Vason, WA, Timothy Lassiter, Centreville, VA, Steve Hill, Hixon, TN, Susannah and Ivan Via, Fisherville, VA, Christopher Strub, Fairfax, VA, Andy Draxler, Locust, NJ, Kim Conn, Snohomish, WA, Charles Thompson, Fayette, MO, John Stine, Briarcliff Manor, NY, and Steven Swerling, Boutiliers Point, Nova Scotia. Chris Runnels, Bellingham, WA, noted that REI still uses Land Rovers in their catalogues. Ellen Nelson, Arlington, TX, noted that when her local paper needed an image for selling rural land, they chose a Land Rover

Sightings Rules: Rule #1: All Sightings receive appreciative recogntion but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in a distinctive way. Rule #2: Sightings should find Land Rovers where you might not expect them. This rules out Land Rover sales advertisements, off road magazines, British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. Rule #3: At an ever-changing date before publication, we close off the Sightings. If we've mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we won't mention it again. If you're new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Welcome aboard! 62

Rule #4: We're not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, one mug per Sighting per issue. Rule #5: Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention when space permits. Rule #6: Psst.. if we can’t read your name and address because of atrocious penmanship we can’t recognize the Sighting or potentially send you a mug. Psst… E-mail submissions – remember we can’t send you a mug via e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7: Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might have made an error. Let us know if you think you’ve been jobbed. We’ll review everything but the decision of the Editor is final.

Discovery for the photo. Scott Coleman, Rochester, NY, spotted a photo in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle of a Series Rover clearing snow off the ice on a local lake. In an Outside GO article on skiing in Japan, they featured a custom snowboard crafter with his Defender 110, reports Jeremy Bergeron, Colorado Springs, CO. Kevin Thayer, Abingdon, VA, noted that Yokohama still uses Land Rovers in their tire ads. Movie producers always love to include Land Rovers. Andy Rigo, Medford, MA, “sat through” Marley and Me with his girlfriend, Carine. There’s a quick view of a Series Rover in an Ireland scene (which he thoughtfully pointed out to her; some eye rolling followed). Dr. Susan Godwin, Fairbanks, AK, spotted the Dalai Lama stepping out of a Range Rover Classic in a documentary, which to her said “simple, rugged and regal, a fitting car for the Tibetan Buddhist monk.” Steven Hutchison, Hendersonville, TN, Don Seder, Dacula, GA, and Earl Ingalls, Longmont, CO, noted that the shallow leads in Four Christmases drove a Range Rover. Sigh… Lots of readers saw the predictable Land Rover in the desert scenes of NBC’s The Last Templar. Thanks to Marc Fails, Palmyra, PA, Greg Vogel, Monkton, MD, Leslie Bright, Kingsport, TN, Craig Crenshaw, Port Arthur, TX, Len Fagan, Willis, VA, David Weaber, Eaton, CO, Jim Gabor, Rochester, MN, Jay Campney, Charlestown, RI, James Dargan, Plymouth, MA, and Jerome Joanio, Broomfield, CO. Other movies watched by Sighters, but mentioned before, include Death Sentence, seen by Craig Miller, Wargames 2, seen by Michael Libott, Burbank, CA, and Eagle Eye, seen by Derek Leath. William Prillaman, Irvington, VA, spotted a South African Land Rover in the UVA Alumni magazine, on the Sweet Briar College Alumni travel brochure, and in the “House of Saddam” series. Michael Jablonski, Longmont, CO, spotted a Defender 110 in use in Chile in a publication of Colorado Trout Unlimited. Paul Schram, Churubusco, IN, spotted an LR3 towing a “caravan” on a web site for TAB camper trailers. David Williamson [See Rule #6] has a friend whose a writer for an NBC miniseries called “Meteor” in which a yellow D-90 falls victim to a, well, meteor. Michael Bondmass, Las Vegas, NV, watched SUV’s roll down a hill on “Most Shocking” and noted that a Defender 90 was sent to tow the failed vehicles away. Scott Pappas watched a History Channel program on Navy SEALS chasing Columbian drug lords, who drove a Range Rover P38-A.

Sightings Winners:

Samuel Conder, Cumming, GA, watched Running the Sahara and saw Series Rovers and a Range Rover supporting the runners. Shawn Chummar, Beaverton, OR, watched a rerun of The Sentinel, who drove a red D-90. Mark Fails, Palmyra, PA, noted a Folgers commercial that staged a peacekeeping scene featuring a Defender 110. Dave Bowman, Orange, VA, spotted a Discovery in Honduras in an episode of House Hunters International. Michael Libott, Burbank, CA, also watched Mega Disasters and watched a Discovery racing to witness an explosion. Watching a repeat of Prison Break, Loic Fabro, noted the good guys drive a Range Rover Sport. In a less illustrious moment, a Range Rover Classic provides the foil in a You Tube video, noted Steven Walls, Baton Rouge, LA. Randy Kremer watched the Mickey Mouse Playhouse at 8 am and though he spotted Mickey in a Series I with an egg frying on the bonnet. Pete Thompson, Crownsville, MD, and Agnes Thewlis watched Grey’s Anatomy repeats and spotted the McDreamy in his Series Rover. Steve Keller watched Babylon 5 and noted the Land Rovers. Kevin Fennessy, North Andover, MA, spotted the old Mastercard ad with Series Land Rovers. Mike Dunkelburger read a January issue of Steamboat Pilot & Today and spotted a Zirkel Trading ad with a Rover. James Pitts, Dallas, GA, read a column in Traditional Bowhunter Magazine in which the columnist, “who hunts all over the world,” leans on the front of a Defender – very rare! Steve Andrews, Easton, MD, read an article on sustainable organic farming in Ecuador in Home Power magazine, that sadly featured a very stuck Series II-A. Sheila Simmons, Austin, TX, noted a Defender in the corner of the cover of Jaguar Driver magazine. Charles Lewinsohn, Salt Lake City, UT, noted that when MIT needed a car to compete in the robotic automobile competition, they chose an LR3, as noted in the MIT News. We don’t usually report “personal Sightings” but LCDR Ed McDonnell, Long Beach, NY, sent us a great photo of a Defender 110 and an LR3 in use by the Diego Garcia, B.I.O.T [British Indian Overseas Territory] police department. Jim Senior sent us a “reverse sighting” in which Rachel Maddow of MSNBC reported of an American kidnapped in Pakistan “from his Land Rover,” which turned out to be a Land Cruiser in the video. P
