LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Rovers North, Our 24th Birthday Party at Silver Lake, Ontario, was blessed with super weather, great attendance and enough mud to wear with pride. We are writing on behalf of everyone who attended this year’s event to thank you for your generous donations and continued support. Having a successful fund raising auction is key to continuing our club’s annual traditional premier event. Jean-Leon Morin, President David Pell, Secretary/Treasurer Kevin Newell, Off Road Coordinator Ottawa Valley Land Rovers Carp, ON Canada [Rovers North congratulates you and your organization for another sterling event. It’s a highlight of the North American event calendar –ed.] Dear Sirs: I have always loved Land Rovers. I guess it is foremost the design of the older series that got me interested many years ago. Around 2000 I bought my first Land Rover, a 1996 Discovery. I only kept it for 3 years as I found maintaining it through the local dealership expensive. However, I knew deep down I would never be content until I owned another Rover. About 3 years ago a fellow resident opened up a restaurant, where I would see his Series Rover, sometimes pulling a small trailer filled with restaurant equipment or picking up supplies. I was impressed that he drove it daily; the dents and the general condition only added to its character. For several years my wife continued to say “no” to my pleas to purchase another Rover. My first wish was a Defender 90 but all the vehicles I priced were out of my range. Then one day a friend and I drove to Snohomish to see the cars at Black Cat Antiques. Imagine my surprise and delight to when I saw a 1971 late IIA sitting in their store. It was exactly what I had been looking for, mostly original with many restored features, a solid runner with a lot of character. Well, I immediately called my wife. She could hear the excitement in my voice as I described it to her. After purchasing the car, the owner made certain that I had a copy of The Rovers North News. I immediately ordered a jump seat for the back as well as other items. Within a week I had taken possession of the Series IIA and I’ve spent many hours tinkering, cleaning and driving it. I feel that the older models embody the original spirit, rugged design and functionality of what I was looking for in a Land Rover. Thanks for your terrific service and friendly staff at Rovers North. 4
Ben Harrison Duvall, WA [Yes, we admire the Series I – III models, too. Enthusiasts with Discovery I-II vehicles have found that many of the expensive repairs once required at dealerships can be accomplished with the right parts, tools, and expert assistance. We’re always happy to help –ed.] Dear Rovers North, If, on these cold winter evenings, after a long day out in the garage under your favorite Land Rover, you’re ready for a bit of “armchair Rovering,” peck out www.imcdb.org/vehicles into your computer and before your eyes will be displayed a listing of nearly every automotive conveyance that has ever appeared in a movie or on television. Find “Land Rover” in the listing and you’ll find some 1,187 different titles listed. Besides the usual Solihull Land Rovers, there are also listings for the more esoteric models such as the Cuthbertson tracked Land Rover, the Minerva, the Santana as well as the interesting Tempo. Sorry to say that in this snowy season my baby (’64 IIA 88”) is at the Cooper Technica shop for the installation of a set of LED running/brake/turn signal lights as well as delving into a box of gears to see why 4WD is being particularly reluctant and troublesome of late. Can’t complain really, as it’s been several years since anything’s gone wrong with my daily driver. Glenn Shriver Chicago, IL [Good luck with the new lamp installation. Let us know how they work out for you – ed.] Dear Rovers North, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy the Rovers North News. I really enjoyed Mike Koch’s article “Simply Irresistible.” The only thing, I was very sad that there were 5 pictures (including the cover) of his white RRC. My Dad has owned a ’91 RRC for about 10 years and I have a ’93 LWB, and never get tired of seeing pictures of them. Mike talked about his leather seats but we never got to see any cabin shots. D. Aaron Conway St. Louis Park, MN [Range Rover owners tend to become Range Rover enthusiasts and Mike’s article help detail just why that happens. Glad you enjoyed the article. Why not send us some photos of your Range Rover? –ed] Hello Rovers North, We’ve been receiving the Rovers North News ever since my husband got his beloved Defender 90. Two Christmas’ ago, he got me a ’94 Range Rover Classic, and I was delight-
ed to read “Simply Irresistible” in the Winter 2008 issue. Mike Koch’s love for his Classic is exactly the love I have for mine (which also has only 3 working windows). I fell in love with Range Rovers 10 years ago when my husband and I were driving behind one just like my current car. We were expecting our first boy and times were tough. I remember telling my mother that Christmas how much I wish I owned a Range Rover. She smiled and said, “one day, dear, you’ll see, one day.” Which is why, that this Christmas, after many beautiful and hard moments in our life, and all the hard work of my adored husband (who deserves every part he owns of the Defender), I could not stop crying when I realized my dream came true. My Range Rover is not brand new nor the most economical or most luxurious car but it is my dream come true. In his Defender or in mine together with our two boys, we feel – like Mike said – “imperial.” Alejandra Ortiz-Jimenez Santa Ana, CA [Mike appreciates your comments and yes, still loves his Range Rover Classic as much as you like yours –ed.] Dear Rovers North, This note is to let you know we are still alive and functioning even though we haven’t ordered anything recently. We to keep you apprised of our progress in renovating our 1963 Carawagon but sadly there has been none. The “inland hurricane” of August 2007 laid a heavy hand on us as it passed directly over the ranch. We narrowly avoided the loss of house and shop and Land Rover, but damage to the canyon has been widespread and severe. Since that first storm we have had three others of less magnitude but all furthered the damage to the “big one.” We look forward to each issue of The Rovers North News and use it to window shop endlessly. As an aside, my first Land Rover experience goes back to 1965 during the erection of a petroleum production facility in the Trucial States, particularly the sheikdom of Abu Dhabi. I had two company cars assigned for my use, both 109” station wagons of a ’62-’64 vintage, all new and shiny to begin with and with large low pressure desert tires. At that time, the old desert hands told me only two types of vehicles could survive a year’s service in the Rub-al-Khali (southern desert); they were the Land Rover and the Dodge Type D light truck. I still enjoy looking through some old slides and seeing my Rover and the Trucial-Oman Scouts military Rovers at work. Thanks again for The Rovers North News, and you will be hearing from us when we progress on our project. Robert and Irene Pugh Loafers Glory Ranch
Gracemont, OK [Glad to hear that the storms grazed you and wish you every success with the Carawagon. Send us photos for an article – ed.] Dear Mark, I have had the Winter ’08 issue of the Rovers North News about a week. It always brings a little sense of adventure with it every time it arrives. The cover photos of the Fall ’07 and Winter ’08 editions were refreshing indeed. The sight of fresh fallen snow and a Rover almost lost in the snowdrift – what a sight! I know seeing snow in a picture and living with it are two different things, but tell your art director (Matt) and editor (Jeff) and yourself as publisher, great job! When I see the Rovers North News I do enjoy reading it, especially “Behind the Steering Wheel,” but even after all these years (since I was a boy) Rovers have always stirred a part of me. I never tire of looking at the pictures. The thoughts of restoring the old IIA that I purchased from you several years ago, even kept me going through a two year bout with cancer. In the meantime, it’s you and your dedicated team that keep old Rovers on the road. Leighton Ogg Houston, TX [We’re thrilled to hear of your recovery and wish you continued good health. It’s clear your II-A is in good hands –ed.] Dear Rovers North, Thanks, guys, great magazine! Not sure about parts yet as I haven’t started on my project Series III. I’m currently collecting parts for the Cummins turbo diesel to replace the 2.25 diesel that I killed driving back from Albuquerque, NM, to Raleigh, NC (1,800 miles – but at least I made it home before it kicked the bucket). Would you guys be interested in a complete diesel, tranny, and transfer case that needs a rebuild? Michael Wellford Raleigh, NC [If any reader is interested, we’ll forward your email address to them –ed.] Dear Rovers North, I’ve just returned from shipboard duty and we stopped at the Indian Ocean military base called Diego Garcia. The British Navy and British Royal Marines use Defenders and Discoveries for police work. The senior ranking British Officer drives a green LR3. LCDR Ed McDonnell Lido Beach, NY [Diego Garcia during a northeast winter – that sounds pretty good –ed.] Dear Les and Rovers North, I bought a Katydid pocket filter 10 years ago for the price of $400. It came in a box with Land Rover 110 on it. It seems like a waste of money, but an important item to have when you are outdoors all the time. I now have a
109” diesel. How many real Land Rover owners use their trucks as they were intended for, and carry around a product with a Land Rover on the box that they really use? The only ones I’ve seen are pictures from magazines, key chains, and cyberspace. I’m willing to bet two Sightings coffee cups. Brendan Riedmuller Waynesboro, PA [For 60 years now Land Rovers have proven their versatility – it’s hard to say just “what they were intended for.” But as the famous BBC Top Gear program noted, “Land Rovers are always doing something important.” –ed.] Dear Rovers North, Thank you guys for always having great prices and being so helpful. Brett Cureton Annapolis, MD [You’re welcome. We envy you with your AA Yellow Defender 90 –ed.] Dear Rovers North, Thanks for my Sightings mugs. I love them. My unknowing friends look puzzled when they see my “coveted” mugs. Sherry Block Hadlyme, CT [If they’re mooching coffee off you, it’s a perfect time to educate them about Land Rovers –ed.] Dear Rovers North, Thanks for being there with the parts and technical support over these many years. Rudy Minar Still River, MA [Do “Still Rivers Run Deep?” – ed.] Dear Rovers North, Keep up the good work. I very much enjoy your publication and look forward to receiving the next one. I enjoy the articles and the stories from other Rover owners. Bent Bowers Marysville, OH [Thanks for letting us help you get the most our of your 1990 Range Rover County –ed]

Stayin’ Cool: Making the Most of Your Series
Story by: Christopher S. Berdy Photos by: Katherine S. Berdy [Christopher Berdy practices law and lives with his family in Birmingham, AL.. To break the boredom, he entertains himself with his 1970 Series IIA 88” SW. Here’s his tale of getting more out of his Rover –ed.] Spring is my favorite time of year…warm days, cool nights, fishing, camping, and my son’s T-ball games. Unfortunately, in Birmingham, Alabama, a blistering summer always interrupts a too short spring. For a Series Land Rover owner in the South, the heat-retaining properties of an aluminum hardtop prove to be a highly unattractive quality in the sweltering summer months. While I laugh at the debates over the “Kodiak v. Smiths” heaters on Rovers North Forum, I find little humor in running a 38-year old vehicle with no air-conditioning and a hardtop in the oppressive August heat. So, converting my 1970 Series IIA 88” station wagon to canvas (called a “tilt” across the pond) was as much a necessity as a desire. The Series Land Rover came in many permutations. To keep manufacturing costs low, the body tub included installation tubes for use with any hard top, pickup top or canvas top. By 1967, Land Rover is advertising its lower-priced canvas top model as “the Land Rover convertible.” You were urged to roll up its canvas top “at the first glint 10
of sunshine.” Never mind that the framework of aluminum hoops, stays and rails were either “on” or “off,” or that the thick canvas top can barely be removed and folded away – the conversion to a soft top transforms the car. I ordered a full “hoop set,” canvas top, gutter rails, windscreen rail, door seals, and tie downs from Rovers North. As I had a standard rear door with two side hinges, I also bought a tailgate, seals, and related hardware. After sorting out and separating the daunting number of parts, I armed myself with a socket set, a small crescent wrench, several flat-head screwdrivers, a drill, tin snips, vise grips, and my not-so-fun-to-use rivet gun. In some thirteen years of ownership, the previous owner of my IIA had never removed the top. Although I had heard horror stories of Series owners cracking their windscreens while trying to detach the hardtop, its removal (and detaching the rear door) went without incident. For a change all the bolts – the two behind the front seats, the two on each side of rear tub, the stretch of them across the windshield – came apart easily and smoothly. Lifting it off was another matter; it was not a one man job. After installing the front and rear hoops, I fitted the side ties and then the middle hoop. For the middle hoop, I used a large vise grip
to draw it to the side ties’ connecting points. After mounting the windscreen rail, I connected the drain channel door post to the large “tabs” on the front hoop. I then bolted the triangle-shaped corner brackets (Part No. 345821/22) to the gutter rails, leaving the nuts loose on the corner brackets. After tightening up the entire assembly, I added door seals to the drain channel door posts and to the gutter rails. This required the drilling of a lot of holes and strenuous use of the rivet gun. I also installed hoop brackets at the base of each hoop (Part No. 304301), and I mounted front tie downs (Part No. 330578/79) to the vehicle sides just beneath the front hoop. The tie downs require drilling two holes each and further use of the rivet gun. Finally, I mounted two tie down staples to the windscreen rail and two to the rear of the vehicle to tighten the canvas to the hoop set. I started at the front of the vehicle and looped the webbing strip onto the windscreen rail and gutter rail’s “teeth”. With the sides of the top draped down, I tucked the edge of the canvas siding into the flange on the drain channel door post. I wrapped the interior-mounted strap around the front hoop and fastened the interior buckle. After draping the canvas down over the rear of the vehicle, I pulled the two long straps down and tied them off with the two rear tie down staples. Inside the vehicle, I then pulled the two long straps hanging down by the rear bulkhead toward the windscreen rail and tightly tied them off at the two tie down staples.
I mounted two horseshoe-shaped rear tie downs (Part No. 345699) over the tail lights for tying off and tightening the canvas with the four pre-cut lengths of rope included with the top. While threading the rope through the canvas is not difficult, it took some patience. For the sleeve on the top of the canvas’ rear flap, I taped the rope to the end of a broom handle, allowing me to “push” it through the sleeve. With the canvas on, I hooked the rope under the side and rear hasps, respectively, and then tied them off at the rear tie downs over the tail lights. While it’s not essential, I plan to apply a healthy coating of Canvak to enhance the durability and waterproofing of my new purchase. I also plan to install some wooden dowels into the canvas’ sleeves to make the sides straighter and easier to roll up. While I like the traditional look of the rope, I will probably replace them with some bungee cord making it easier to secure the canvas to the vehicle, particularly in the wet. To help the top retain its shape for a long time, it’s helpful to really cinch down the top in wet weather and let it dry, tied down tightly. Needless to say, with my soft top on, I am thoroughly enjoying the cool spring weather. Not only is it breezy, but I can roll up the sides and still have shade. Of course, few vehicles draw more attention than a Series Rover with its soft top down or sides rolled up. _______ ________

Story & Photos by Louise Orlando
Born Free Redux
[15 years ago, Louise Orlando and Andrew Barbour, Cape Charles, VA, spent a year driving a 1960 Series II Land Rover from London to Cape Town. Their adventures formed the basis of Andrew’s writing the Fodor’s Guide to South Africa. In this article Louise recounts her love affair with one of Land Rover’s true classics –ed.]
We’re stuck again, buried up to the axles in fine Sahara sand in the middle of a minefield. Our convoy of vehicles, 23 in all, has been abandoned by our Moroccan military escorts at the no-man’s land separating Western Sahara and Mauritania. No wonder. A 50-kilometer-wide minefield spreads before us, and the shifting sands obscure the tracks of any other vehicles. Blowing winds have uncovered some mines, but who knows what others lie buried just beneath the surface? Our fear is compounded by the fact that we keep getting stuck. On its own, our SWB Series II can traverse the soft dunes
20
with little problem, but we are towing a heavy trailer. Each time we bog down, we have to pull out the sand mats, unhitch the trailer, dig ourselves out, then turn the Land Rover around and haul the trailer clear with our winch. We have a sneaking suspicion that we will die out here, either blown to bits by a mine or because we simply cannot force our way through the deep sand. I look over at my then- boyfriend, Andrew, as he unspools the winch cable for the 15th time. “Whose bright idea was it to drive a vehicle the length of Africa?” I ask, knowing full well that it was mine. It all started about 14 months earlier in San Francisco, where we were living. After a particularly bad day at work, we treated ourselves to dinner at an Italian restaurant, drank a lot of wine, and convinced ourselves that we should quit our jobs to travel overland through Africa. It made sense at the time. Wine does that to you. Of course, we didn’t get from the wine to the desert easily. In the days that followed, there was a lot of discussion about how we’d travel. Andrew wanted to backpack. I wanted motorcycles. But when we rented the movie Born Free, I instantly knew that we had to drive through Africa, for no other reason than that I had fallen head-over-heels for the Land Rover that Elsa slept on. Who cares that the movie was 30 years old? I needed that car. Andrew thought I was nuts. Thus began my search. Within three weeks I found our Land Rover. The ad read: 1960 Series II Land Rover, mint condition, 32,000 miles. I called. A man named Scotty (yes, he was Scottish) answered. I drilled him: Is the car really in mint condition? Does it have any rust? How big is it? Could I drive it across Africa? Laughter filled the phone. My face glowed red. This guy thinks I’m a fool, I thought, but instead he started
talking about how strong a Land Rover is, that its age was actually a benefit because it was so easy to fix, and that it would carry us the length of Africa and back. Before I realized it, we had plans to meet over the weekend. Andrew thought that I had gone soft in the head. What did we know about cars? We were city folk. We were editors, for God’s sake! I rarely drove, had no idea how to drive a stick shift, and had never put my head under the hood of a car. Oh, but it was love at first sight. My eyes glazed over, my heart skipped a beat. She was beautiful—classic Land Rover green with a white tropical roof. Andrew was smitten, too. The Land Rover cupid drilled us both through the heart with a hypoid-filled arrow. We leaped at Scotty’s suggestion that we take it for a test drive, but we lost courage when he mentioned the need to double-clutch into second gear. Double-clutch? Instead, Scotty did the honors, while we piled into the front seat next to him. I sat in the middle, with my legs draped over Andrew. Scotty started her up. She purred. He put her in gear and we were off. He demonstrated double clutching, low range, and high range. Andrew listened to Scotty intently, but it all flowed over me - I was simply trying to control my excitement. What the heck was that smell? It was an aphrodisiac. You know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s about as far from that new car smell as you can get. It’s the lovely aroma of hypoid and lightly fried Lucas electrics. Scotty operated his own Land Rover repair shop, so we made an offer for the Series II that included mechanic lessons, spare parts, and a roof rack. For the next three months, we
tackled one major maintenance job each week. But something wasn’t quite right. Scotty addressed almost all his comments about mechanics to Andrew, leaving me as note-taker. I half expected to be asked to make coffee. I know cars have long been the domain of men, but I was damned if I was going to be passenger on this adventure. Put simply, Scotty was going to shift gears, double clutch himself, so to speak, and teach me. To his credit, he made the adjustment without grinding gears. Soon enough, my nails were as black with grease as Andrew’s. Over the ensuing weeks, Scotty gave me a crash course in Land Rover repair, including how to change the exhaust-manifold gasket (how cool was that!), adjust the brakes, and replace the generator with a marine alternator. I skinned my knuckles removing stubborn bolts, covered myself in oil, and sported an array of unsightly bruises. Meanwhile, Scotty advised us on the tools, spares, and equipment we would need on our journey, everything from spanners and ratchet sets to rear axles (a potential field weakness on Series Rovers, we discovered) and high-lift jacks. As the list of our equipment grew longer and longer, it became clear that we were facing a serious space problem. The roof rack was off limits—we planned to pitch our tent up there as protection from both animals and people—leaving no room for our 10 jerrycans or second spare wheel. The inside of our 88” was already full. We had built two large, lockable wooden boxes to fit snugly inside the back of the Land Rover. The boxes held our food and medical supplies, clothes, camera equipment, laptop, and key spare parts. We had smaller plastic storage bins with tight-fitting lids stacked 21
inside each large box. For extra storage we clipped some old German army rucksacks to the roof joints. Worried still about expedition storage, we ended up buying a trailer from Scotty: the back-end of an old Series II fitted with a metal top and a towing mechanism. It was a real brick. To help us get some off-road experience, Scotty also introduced us to a Northern California Land Rover club. When the club members heard of our planned Africa adventure, they invited us to join them for a weekend camping trip in Nevada. We agreed nervously. For starters, it was only our second time camping. We still didn’t own any gear (we rented what we needed). Secondly, the club’s members all seemed to have odd names like Bugman and Fire Guy. What were we getting into? Land Rover enthusiasts are a breed of their own, and this club was no different. They were an incredibly diverse group, with one thing in common: They were passionate about Land Rovers. Suddenly, we found ourselves among people (all right, all guys) who took parental pride in the Land Rover’s propensity to leak oil, and who looked fondly upon the eccentricities of Lucas. They were prepared to embrace these shortcomings because they had learned through 22
hard experience that the Land Rover was the best off-road vehicle in the world, bar none. And these guys liked to test their vehicles. They led us into the high desert of western Nevada, where we didn’t see another soul for three days. Hardly surprising. Our little convoy sought out the roughest tracks and rocky trails en route to secluded hot springs, dry lakebeds, and awe-inspiring grandeur. That weekend, the club members taught us how to drive off road, when to use high and low range, and at what angle we could go without tipping. I learned how to hang off the side of the car to provide extra ballast, clear trails with a pick axe, and select the best angles of approach. When one of the Land Rovers pitched sideways down a steep bank, the guys were almost giddy to see how our PTO-driven Koenig winch would work (like a champ). Ours was the oldest Land Rover on the trip—the others were Series IIIs—and the club members were divided over our plan to drive it through Africa. Most felt that it was great to see a Series II being used for its original purpose. In the eyes of a couple of guys, though, our car was a classic, something that should be babied and exhibited at car shows.
We had every intention of babying her, but we were going to use Africa to exhibit what she could do. The weekend with the Land Rover club filled us with confidence and knowledge. The guys kept telling us that we’d never encounter roads as bad or as treacherous as the ones we had just conquered. They repeated what Scotty had said during our first conversation: “This car will get you across Africa and back.” On our final evening, encamped on a dry lakebed at 9,000 feet, the club members built a huge bonfire. With a great deal of ceremony, they presented Andrew with a Land Rover cap that had been passed from one owner to another over the years. And to me they gave a pick axe, lauding me as one tough bird for planning such a trip. Now toughness is not something I have ever been accused of, but I suppose they weren’t used to having a woman along. Their wives and girlfriends wanted nothing to do with their smelly, noisy Land Rovers. Returning to San Francisco, we finalized our plans. Using giant Michelin maps of Africa, we traced a route that would take us on a giant S-curve through the continent, working our way from Morocco through the Sahara into West Africa. From there, we would head east, through the jungles of the Congo to Kenya and Tanzania, before turning south again toward Cape Town and South Africa. We had obtained all the necessary paperwork, bought all the supplies. All that remained was to put our Land Rover on a ship for London. For the last time, I checked our nine-page, single-spaced list of supplies and equipment. Then we drove our girl down to the docks. Waving goodbye, I felt almost sick (It’s a car, for God’s sake, not a child!). If I had known that we would be stuck in a minefield within a few short weeks, I would probably have never let her go. To be continued...

YOU BELONG TO ME Sotry & potos by Eric Evans
[Eric Evans, Naples, FL, owns an ex-MOD 109” and a Defender 90, as well as this proud Range Rover. He most recently contributed an article on his Land Rover experiences in Iceland –ed.] Ty Schmidt is an old friend and former co-worker at the Disney enterprises here in Florida. One day last year he called me with some “big news.” He and his family had decided to make a lifestyle change and move from their home of many years in Charleston, SC to the western slope region of Colorado. Ty called me for two reasons: first, because I had spent a lot of time living and playing in Colorado, he wanted recommendations on suitable places for his family to make their new home and secondly, and he wanted to know if I could take in his ailing 1988 Range Rover Classic. My buddy Ty had owned this Classic for nearly 4 years. The Range Rover had served, somewhat faithfully, as his daily around-town driver, never making lengthy trips or transporting him more than a few miles at a time. Ty clearly cared more about functionality than appearance for this Range Rover had definitely slipped into a state of decline. Present and accounted for were all they typical failings of a Range Rover of this vintage – rotted floorboards, rusted wheel wells, countless broken switches and sporadic electrics, ratty interior, strange odors and multiple mechanical issues that had
26
rendered the vehicle un-drivable. Prior to her last trip “around the block”, she had been diagnosed with a blown head gasket and sent promptly to the neighborhood garage for repairs. My definition of “neighborhood garage” in this instance is “a local automotive repair facility that has not ever seen or worked on the likes of a Land Rover before.” Despite a successful head gasket replacement, subsequent attempts to get her running again were unsuccessful. The Range Rover was parked and left in the back corner of an equipment rental company compound, where it sat until I took her in. Six months later, I find myself knee deep in two Land Rover projects; more suspension and performance upgrades to my D90 and continued renovations on my ex-MOD 109”. All the while, I wonder what I might do with this Range Rover now that, but for the paperwork, it belongs to me. Having no space for yet another Rover, I started brainstorming. The solution? Give it to Benny, my father in law. Benny had recently retired and had caught the Land Rover bug while joining me at the 2007 Florida Land Rover Club Spring Rallye in Osceola. I must admit; this seemed like an odd time to become a Land Rover enthusiast. At the Rallye, my D90 fried her own electrical system due to a failed voltage regulator in the alternator, nearly blowing the Optima Battery out from under my seat. Despite never
getting to off-road at that event, Benny remained a Land Rover buff and I was certain he would be up for the challenge of bringing this Range Rover back to life. All restoration or refurbishment projects become much longer processes than originally intended, and this effort ran true to form. Benny’s first task was to clean her up. He spent the entire first weekend completely stripping the interior of all non-essential items. What remained was two front seats, a modified dash/center console and a whole lotta body rot in the floors, wheel wells, kick panel and more. This unwelcome discovery prompted several days of cutting, grinding, sanding and patching to achieve something that was acceptable, if not concours. The long list of typical Rover woes would not surprise any enthusiast who has purchased a neglected Range Rover or Discovery. In the past, someone had elected to seal the sunroof with marine adhesive instead of clearing out the clog-prone drain tubes. This had apparently been a long-standing issue, as the drive gears and motor were nearly corroded to pieces. The solution: completely remove the sunroof assembly and install a new “moon roof”. This was achieved through the use of low end Home Depot style plexiglass! Smear on a little 3M sealant, run a few self-tapping sheet metal screws through et voila - instant moon roof. At the end of the “cosmetic phase,” we turned our limited mechanical skills to getting this beast running well for its first off-road event. Our deadline was the Florida Land Rover Club’s Spring Rallye in Richloam. First on the list was to sort out what had, or more accurately had not, been done to the engine, ancillaries and tuning. Changing the oil and filter, installing new spark plugs, cap, rotor, and ignition coil got the truck running but only on starter fluid – not a good idea – and then only for a few minutes at a time. We found that multiple sensors, including critical oxygen sensors, were not connected. Part of the throttle assembly was also missing. We even found that the transmission “kick down” cable had been disconnected, which explained the weak throttle response and top speed of only about 20mph. During this rebuild, an English friend stopped by to review our efforts (it’s great to have a knowledgeable English friend when working on a Range Rover). He spurred us on to deeper investigation. Use of a timing light helped us uncover that the distributor had been installed nearly 180 degrees out of position (“Hello, friendly neighborhood garage?”). A few turns of the wrenches and suddenly she ran like a top! Thank you Darren Oakes – long live England! Absolutely jubilant, we could not wait to get to the fun bits, like a snorkel and CB radio! Our hopes were crushed at the sound of running water – coolant, to be more precise. A seemingly unending stream of it was running off the top of the transmission all over the driveway. My first thought, after “what the F@$&,” was “how is this possible?” Straight to the phone I went; I sought advice from Darren, then a friend who is a Land Rover tech on the East Coast and finally, Art Limacher at Rovers North. The consensus was that a blown valley pan gasket was allowing coolant to literally pump out of the back of the top half of the engine.
If you follow the repair rate manual, it’s a four hour-job. For Benny and I, it may have well have been 4+ days – time we did not have if we were to make the Florida Land Rover Club Rallye. Time for a helpful bodge, in this case, a product called Blue Devil. This unbelievably expensive ($60 per bottle) goop looks like nothing more than window cleaner. Its label claims it will repair anything from a radiator pin-hole leak to a cracked block. Never having been one to buy such miracle products, I reluctantly suggested to Benny that we give it a try. The directions read as follows: drain the system, remove the thermostat (presumably to keep it from gumming up), refill with water and Blue Devil and run for 1 hour or until the leak stops. It was a good thing that we had resolved the distributor issue so that the truck would even idle for an hour. To our amazement, after only 20 minutes our former Geyser was gone! That’s worth every penny of $60 in my book. With this behind us, we focused on finishing some more of the fun stuff. We scoured Home Depot for vacuum hoses, drain clamps and PVC pipe fittings to create a do-it-yourself snorkel for about $30. It looks more like a periscope than a snorkel, but hey, it works (at least we hope it does). We also installed an old pair of 2” lift Old Man Emu heavy duty springs that had been on my Defender 90 until a recent upgrade. The lift provided not only a taller stance, but more room for 235/85/R16 Kenda Klever All-Terrain Tires ($105 each). For the final touch, I purchased lots of earth tone spray paint for a cool camouflage look modeled after the pattern on a shirt from Bass Pro Shops. Not only did this make the new beast look cool, but it covered up an aftermarket paint job that we had come to refer to as “Pimp My Ride Apple Green Metallic.” We christened the Range Rover, The Cammo Evolution, and it made a very successful showing at the Club Rallye. She ran flawlessly, despite the discovery of nearly 4 quarts of water in the engine oil after being stuck in a particularly deep water crossing (maybe a DIY snorkel is not the way to go). She even conquered several obstacles that stopped my Defender 90! Fellow Florida Land Rover Club member Ed Poelsma was so taken by the Range Rover that he donated an awesome brush guard to us. At the end of the day, today’s Range Rover Classics are a real off-road bargain. Granted, ours was free. After freight, repairs, tires and miscellaneous parts, this trail-proven Land Rover only set us back about $2,000. The true cost of the entertainment it provided in refurbishment and driving – priceless! _______ ________

Memories of Winter Past Story & photos by Jeffrey Aronson
There’s nothing like seeing a long line of trail-equipped Land Rovers approaching you. That is, of course, unless you are in a long line of Land Rovers heading directly towards them. That summed up the challenges presented by Mother Nature at this year’s Maine Winter Romp, held from February 15 – 17. Yes, it will snow in New England during the winter, but there’s such a thing as too much snow. Under sunny skies and chilly temperatures, the 60 Land Rovers attending – from as far away as Ohio and Pennsylvania – found themselves bogged down in deep snow and winching out constantly. The trail leaders worked quickly to change the convoy routes, but it meant that new turnarounds had to be created in the woods [waist deep snow in some areas] to permit vehicles to exit successfully. The sounds of winches turning, tow straps yanking and shovels shoveling rang through the woods. Despite the many hours of hard work [or waiting], spirits never flagged and everyone who could pitched in to help – even though we never did get to the lunch break clearing. Many of us spent a lot of time running winch cable and rope and making certain that safety never took a back step to expedience. While some heavily-kitted out vehicles found themselves stuck, some very stock vehicles [Discovery II, Range Rover Classic] proved themselves very capable. Novice drivers received a lot of hands-on instruction and learned a great deal about the extraordinary capability of their Rovers. Where Series Rovers used to predominate at this event, most enthusiasts now run their Range Rover Classics, Discovery I and IIs, and of course, their Defenders. Organizer Bruce Fowler drove 50% of the Series Is present; a few Series IIAs from Ohio [driven, not trailered], New Brunswick and Maine stood out for their rarity. My ’66 IIA, largely stock, powered me through some fine icy sinkholes and even helped yank out others. This was great for my passengers, a toddler named Sophie and her father, Tomas. She only complained when we had to stop and seemed to enjoy the pummeling and rumbling down the trails. No wonder – her father and I spent our day grinning over another wonderful weekend in the snow. _______ ________ 34

Operation Swamp Cooler Story & Photos by Calef Letorney Swamp coolers evaporate water, cooling the air much like air conditioning. I was 19 when I first learned of swamp coolers. My late introduction is due to the fact that I grew up in the relatively humid climate of Vermont and swamp coolers function best in dry climates. Right away I was intrigued by the low energy consumption and relative simplicity of the swamp cooler: All you need is air flowing through a damp cloth. This simplicity saved the day during a heat wave last July on a road trip from Vermont to Utah, when I decided to fashion a swamp cooler of sorts; evaporative cooling made all the difference and so I am sharing my discovery to cool fellow A/C-less Rover owners in hot dry places everywhere. My buddy Buck and I had just crossed the Colorado Rockies headed towards Salt Lake City on I-70. Like many Rovers, mine lacks A/C and so I prefer to relax in the shade of a swimming hole by day and drive at night, but chances had us stopping to see a friend in Moab in the oppressive mid day heat. On this particularly cloudless day, my TDI Defender resembled a convection oven and I desired A/C oh so badly. Seeing as proper A/C was out of the question, Buck and I got to thinking of using evaporative cooling to slow our melting. After all, we had plenty of fast moving dry air and gallons of water to evaporate. In essence we wanted to create a swamp cooler inside my Rover. Upon conceiving the idea of a swamp-cooled Rover, I immediately imagined a tank of water above the windscreen with a drip feed down to a wicking material behind my dash vents. In fact, Buck is a mechanical engineering student (which I understand is bit of a rarity for someone named “Buck”) and so we kicked the design
36
idea around a bit. Granted, this design could create a bit of a wet mess in the dash area, but it couldn’t be any worse than the healthy amount of water ingression through my dash vents in a hard rain. The idea seemed promising so we even called a few Rover gurus to share the genius and the idea was well received. In the end we concluded that the project had promise but it wasn’t going to keep us from expiring in the near future. It was time for immediate action. Buck held the wheel (I-70 is mind-numbingly straight and deserted at this point) while I took my shirt off. Buck then emptied his water bottle onto my shirt and stuffed it into the mesh behind my open dash vent then repeated with his shirt in the passenger vent. We closed all the windows so the only air coming in was through our cooler and waited patiently… for maybe ten minutes. While the idea had promise it was ultimately considered a failure due to the seemingly slow or non-existent cooling effect. Unwillingness to wait was fostered not only by the increased heat from closing windows but also the uncomfortable sticky sensation of hot vinyl seats our bare backs. We proceeded to try several variations of opening and closing door windows, sunroof and side windows, all to no avail. And so the experiment was canned and Buck held the wheel again while I put my shirt back on. While ultimately a failure, the experiment was encouraging because I enjoyed a few cool minutes as the last of the water evaporated from my shirts and we learned much. It seemed airflow was all-important; when the windows were closed the cabin really turned into a sauna. It seemed the dash vents failed due to lack of airflow and so a new plan was hatched: we would
suspend wet T-shirts in the open windows. After exploring several different means of T-shit suspension this concept was also abandoned as nothing we could make while driving proved sturdy enough to hold a T-shirt in the 80MPH wind. Frustrated and incredibly sweaty I looked back at Buck’s dog Treker panting his tongue off behind us. All of a sudden I got the urge to pour some water on his fur. Then it hit me! I dumped my water bottle all over my head and the swamp cooler turned on immediately. For the first time all day I was experiencing a comfortable operating climate, a bit clammy but nice and cool. Buck and Treker promptly followed suite and both communicated approval. After protecting our intellectual property by beginning the patent process, we came up with the catchy name The Swamp Cooler Shirtâ and began discussing variants. We found that a turban-style application of The Swamp Cooler Shirtâ was great for reducing the typical drivers arm tan line. Disclaimer: When using The Turban Cooler Shirtâ it is important to apply copious amounts of sunscreen. Do not use for more than 15 minutes at a time. Keep The Turban Cooler Shirtâ high on head to ensure adequate vision. Misuse can lead to burns, serious bodily injury or even death. Must be 16 years or older with a valid drivers license, registration, insurance and waterproof seats to operate.
After our great discovery, we proceeded to Salt Lake City in comfort. Buck, Treker and I went our separate ways. A week later with I met up with a few friends and we drove south to the Grand Canyon where we did a self supported 16 day raft trip down the Colorado River. I was in a kayak and had the ability to dunk my head in the cold water whenever the 110+ degree heat go to me, but I noticed many of the rafters wore what looked like a bandana around their necks. Upon inquiring I learned that the bandanas had a built in sponge for evaporative cooling. The whole practice looked a great deal like my patented Swamp Cooler Shirtâ. Then I remembered that I had seen the same trick done with wet canvas over a metal canteen. It seems we had reinvented a cooling method likely used for thousands years. The real question is, why had did I endured countless miserably hot hours behind the wheel when I had all the tools necessary to cool myself? The answer is simple: We are modern men driving semi-modern automobiles. Our adaptation to the convenience of A/C has made us forget the simple ways of doing things. And so I suggest that if you find yourself Rovering in the dry heat, try a little evaporative cooling! Happy Travels, _______ ________

EMPLOYEE PROFILE: Koch on Koch Where did you grow up and what brought you to Vermont? I grew up about twenty miles north of New York City and moved to Burlington, Vermont to attend the University of Vermont. During my senior year, something clicked and I felt like I needed to stay in Vermont. I really appreciate the pace of life and landscape of Vermont in comparison to the New York metro area. How would you describe what you do at Rovers North? I have been working in the Sales Department since October of 2002, especially enjoying helping customers who depend on their old Rovers as daily drivers. I can empathize when your one and only vehicle requires unexpected service and your life momentarily grinds to a halt, while all your friends and family look on in complete bewilderment as to why you insist on driving an old Rover. In addition, I proof and write articles for the Rovers North News. Working at Rovers North is great, because it allows me to meld my favorite hobby with a fun work environment. Describe your most interesting Land Rover experience: Having the dashboard of my 90 catch fire on the way home from swimming in Lake Champlain one hot summer evening, was rather “interesting” at the time. Armed with a fire extinguisher and a wet bathing suit, I managed to keep the carnage of melted wires and plastic to a minimum. Then there was the time I was stripping the paint off my 90, using Aircraft Stripper, and ended up in the Emergency Room… What Land Rovers have you owned? The first Land Rover I owned was a bit of a project…an old hardtop 90, in which I installed a 200 Tdi. Here was this worn-out Land Rover, sans engine, and I made it my project to rehabilitate it for daily use. Up until that time, this was my most involved automotive technical experience, both equally frustrating and rewarded along the way. Once it was on the road, it was my only vehicle. That summer, I drove it just about every weekend to Land George, NY (about a 2-hour drive from Burlington, VT), down backcountry roads, to go boating with my friends from UVM. One late summer afternoon, a camo 1978 Series III 109” military pulled in to Rovers North and within a few days, I was its new owner and my 90 was instantly sold. I still regret selling that 90, but at the time I had this overwhelming urge to own a Series Rover. The 109” was fun to drive because every time I got behind the wheel, it felt like an adventure; however, it was my only
vehicle and I found myself renting cars to attend a series of weddings scattered throughout New England. I sold it soon after acquiring my 1993 Range Rover SWB this past autumn, which I utilize as a daily driver today. I just wasn’t using the 109” as much anymore and felt that it deserved a better home. My Range Rover Classic puts a smile on my face whenever I turn the key, because there’s something that makes you feel special when you’re driving a Range Rover Classic. Which one of them was your favorite and why? I appreciate them all for different reasons. I’ve had many fond memories driving and living with all three of them. If I had to pick one, it would be my old 90. It was one of the most reliable vehicles I’ve owned. Being a diesel, it sounded like a real truck. At the time I owned it, I lived about an hour from work in North Ferrisburg, VT and fuel efficiency was paramount. Unlike my 109” it could keep up with modern traffic on the highway, yet still had a vintage feel with its spare tyre mounted on the bonnet. During the summer, I’d remove door tops for the entire season and occasionally had to deal with sitting in a damp seat when it rained. Prior to liquidating it, I installed a cab top, which made the interior more comfortable during winter. All my friends loved it and to this day confirm that I was crazy to part with it. What activities do you do when you’re not at Rovers North? I am fanatical about owning and maintaining older European cars. From vintage souped-up Alfa Romeos to air-cooled Volkswagens, there have been about sixteen cars that I have employed as fun, quirky daily drivers. I enjoy hiking, snow shoeing, snowboarding, working on my historic condo, music, photography, cooking and wine. How have Land Rovers influenced your life? After buying my first Land Rover, I’ve always had to have one in “the stable.” They have incorporated themselves into my life in so many ways. For instance, I solely used my 109” to move the entire contents of my apartment when I bought my condo last summer. It took many trips to get the job done and I had to take extra measures to ensure nothing got cracked or scratched, given the rough ride of three-decade-old military leaf springs. _______ ________ 45
Land Rover Corporate Info LAND ROVER: CELEBRATING 60 YEARS AND GOING STRONG Gaydon, 30 April 2008 – 60 years ago today, a motoring icon made its public debut, when the original Land Rover was shown at a motor show in Amsterdam, on April 30, 1948. The current Defender is clearly descended from that first vehicle, now known as a Series I. Extraordinarily, they even share a couple of original parts, an oil filler plug and a cleat for tying down the canvas roof. But the rest of the vehicle technology has moved on considerably. Today, Land Rover goes from strength-to-strength, with a five-model line-up headed by the Range Rover, and record global sales of over 226,000 vehicles in 2007. The company recently received an early birthday present, in the form of two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise. The first, for 'International Trade', was given in recognition of export sales of nearly £4 billion per annum to 147 countries, with markets such as China and Russia driving major growth. The second, for 'Innovation', was awarded for Land Rover's acclaimed Terrain Response system. At the twist of a knob, this sets up the vehicle's engine response and traction systems to maximise performance on all terrains - the electronic equivalent of having an expert instructor alongside the driver.

Around the world, Land Rover will be celebrating its 60th anniversary year throughout the summer with a series of special activities and events. Success Story Land Rover is an outstanding British engineering and manufacturing success story. Its manufacturing plants at Solihull (near Birmingham) and Halewood (near Liverpool) and its R&D facilities in the English Midlands, employ a workforce of 8,500 - and the company helps support an estimated further 40,000 jobs through automotive suppliers. Since the first Series I model rolled off the production line at Solihull, the vehicles created by Land Rover have defined the 4x4 market. In 1970, the company introduced what's been called the most significant 4x4 vehicle ever, the Range Rover – the first 4x4 to be equally capable on-road as off-road. Now, alongside the Range Rover and Defender, sit the Discovery 3 (LR3 in some markets), Freelander 2 (LR2) and Range Rover Sport. Land Rover's spirit of adventure has been evident from the earliest days. Adventurers, farmers, scientists, naturalists, and outdoor sport enthusiasts have all used Land Rovers' capability to access some of the world's most inhospitable regions. For 60 years,
47
the company's vehicles have also worked for a multitude of humanitarian and conservation organisations, represented today by Land Rover's formal ties with the Born Free Foundation, Biosphere, Earthwatch, the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), and the China Exploration and Research Society. Phil Popham, Land Rover's Managing Director, commented, "Land Rover’s history is a long and illustrious one – and the future is just as exciting. We are committed to maintaining our relevance and meeting the needs of our customers in a changing global environment. Earlier this year, we unveiled a glimpse into our possible future - the diesel hybrid LRX cross-coupe concept. This signals that Land Rover will continue to evolve, with capability, premium values and sustainable motoring at the top of the agenda." 2009 RANGE ROVER SPORT The 2009 Range Rover Sport, one of three updated Land Rover models making their debut at the 78e Salon International de l’Automobile Geneva, includes refreshed exterior trim, new wheel designs and improvements to the interior craftsmanship enhancing the premium feel. The sales success of Range Rover Sport has continued through 2007 and into 2008, helping Land Rover to a third successive record sales year of 226,000 units. Phil Popham, Land Rover managing director, comments; “Sales have been driven by the hugely popular TDV8 engine, especially in Europe, which offers petrol-like refinement but with 32% better fuel economy.” The exterior enhancements are focused around the refreshed rear end details, which include body colour finish to the tailgate trim, revised tread mat (on upper surface of rear bumper), addition of clear-lens rear lights and clear lens side indicators. The dramatic stance of the vehicle is further enhanced with the addition of a second 20 inch wheel style, available in painted silver or diamond turned finish. The new wheel style is complemented with the addition of a shadow chrome finish now available for the first time on the existing 10 spoke 20-inch Alloy wheel. The introduction of three new metallic paint colours - Santorini Black, Galway Green and Bournville (black with a hint of brown) further differentiates the 2009 Range Rover Sport. The desirability of the Range Rover Sport is further enhanced with the introduction of Noble, a metallic plate finish, on the centre console sides, air vent bezels and door pull handles to emphasize the clean architectural graphics of the cabin. Premium leather with diagonal stitching is now available on door inserts in Ebony, Almond and Ivory. To continue the contemporary sporting nature of the cabin, leather seats with Alcantara centre panels have been extended across three colour options, with contrast Ivory stitching available with Ebony. The introduction of acoustic laminated side glass to both driver and passenger windows allows occupants to enjoy the updated cabin whilst experiencing reduced levels of road and wind noise, along with increased levels of security. 48
“The Range Rover Sport excels in its delivery of on-road performance, best in class comfort and refinement with incredible off-road ability across the world. Range Rover Sport is now regarded as the quintessential sports tourer,” says Phil Popham, Land Rover’s managing director. This new global partnership with the world’s largest humanitarian organisation will ensure the adventure competition leaves a positive legacy by acting as a platform to generate funds and assist life-changing humanitarian projects around the world. Land Rover Managing Director Phil Popham said: “The Land Rover G4 Challenge is an incredible programme that demonstrates our products’ breadth of capability and displays our desire to always push the boundaries of adventure. It is ideal to work as a fundraising and awareness building platform for a humanitarian organisation and we are delighted that we can now make the most of the Challenge’s success and leave a lasting positive legacy by working with the International Federation. “Land Rover is a strong brand that has a natural fit with humanitarian organisations in general. Our association with the International Federation goes back a long way, to 1954, when Land Rover supplied a long-wheelbase Series 1 to the British Red Cross for use in Dubai as a mobile dispensary. We are now looking forward to forging closer links with the International Federation through the Land Rover G4 Challenge.” Sir Nicholas Young, the CEO of the British Red Cross, speaking on behalf of the International Federation, said: “An association with the Land Rover G4 Challenge offers a unique and positive way for the International Federation to reach completely new audiences. It will enable us to activate projects that may otherwise not be possible. This will be a partnership that will save lives - it’s as simple as that.” The ultimate global adventure bringing together 18 nations in mixed-gender teams In a significant expansion to the previous events run in 2003 and 2006, the 2008/09 Land Rover G4 Challenge will involve mixed-gender national teams. Competitors from 18 different countries, who can now register their interest on www.landroverg4challenge.com, will
battle through a rigorous national and international selection process. The best male and female from each nation will enter the Challenge itself, which will take place in Asia in early 2009. The event will again have off-road driving at its core, combined with adventure sports and extreme initiative challenges for an ultimate test of team spirit and physical fitness. The entire Land Rover fleet will be involved, with the Range Rover Sport, Freelander 2 and Discovery 3 all in action as competition vehicles in the distinctive Tangiers Orange colour. The victorious national team will win a Land Rover for their National Red Cross or Red Crescent Society. Martin Dreyer, winner of the 2006 Challenge, said: “The last Challenge was an amazing experience and it was a fantastic feeling to win after such a tough competition against competitors from all around the world. I am sure that the new format, with national teams and more female competitors, will make the next Challenge even more exciting.” The Challenge will follow Land Rover’s brand-wide environmental programme and will be fully CO2 offset, supporting specifically identified global projects through Land Rover’s partner Climate Care.
This programme, coupled with considerate competition design, will ensure the event has neutral environmental impact while leaving a positive humanitarian legacy with International Federation projects around the world. Protecting Our Loved Ones
Story by: Mike Koch and Calef Letorney
As Land Rover enthusiasts, we are all too familiar with our beloved vehicle’s legendary ability to rust. It only takes a handful of salty winters or playful afternoons wading in the ocean for corrosion to completely devalue an older Land Rover. Corrosion doesn’t just send Land Rovers off to an early grave, it creates the need for many repairs, significantly complicates otherwise quick fixes and diminishes the pride and enjoyment of ownership. Being located in Vermont, one of the rustiest places around, we take corrosion prevention very seriously here at Rovers North. About a half dozen years ago Rovers North got switched on to Waxoyl Professional and it has proved the only product that can truly protect our Land Rovers from the winter salt. The best corrosion protection for any vehicle is a proper professional application of Waxoyl Professional, but don’t stop there! Keep an aerosol of Waxoyl Professional handy every time you work on your Land Rover so you can treat hidden areas that your repairs expose. “What?” You ask, “shouldn’t the complete professional application protect my Land Rover 100%?” For most vehicles the answer is an overwhelming yes, but not with Land Rovers. Unlike a unibody car, older Land Rovers are assembled from individual pieces and have a plethora of seems, crevices and dissimilar metals contacting each other, all of which are ideal corrosion traps. While a complete professional application of Waxoyl will prevent virtually all corrosion, the only way to completely treat a Land Rover is to rebuild it with Waxoyl in all the places otherwise impossible to reach. Of course the ideal time to do this rust proofing is during restoration, but for many that isn’t an option and so we suggest making every repair an opportunity to rebuild that section with Waxoyl in all the places that corrosion could start. If you live in or often travel to a rust area, this approach is for you! Its simple, just do the repair as normal and use an aerosol can to apply Waxoyl while reassembling, turning every repair into an opportunity to further protect your Land Rover from the never-ending attack of corrosion The products Waxoyl Professional 120-4 is typically used to spray inside a vehicle’s body cavities and chassis. 120-4 has a low viscosity and creeps into all the hard to reach spots. It is also clear so overspray does not make a mess. The most effective way to treat cavities is using the Waxoyl Professional spray guns and compressed air, but during a repair it is easy to apply 120-4 on the surface using an aerosol then reassemble. This method provides excellent protection and adds little time or cost to a repair job. Waxoyl Professional Hardwax is the opposite of 120-4. Hardwax is black and rather than creep and penetrate like 120-4, it is thick and durable. Hardwax is appropriate for areas exposed to abrasion 50
and particularly well suited for underbody protection. Underbody application with the professional equipment is quick, clean and precise, but Land Rover owners have been known to tackle the job with aerosols. Hardwax also has great sound deadening and insulation characteristics so it is ideal for the inside of doors, the roof or the hood before installing the insulation. To make the most of your Waxoyl experience we recommend heating aerosol cans in a bucket of warm water. The ideal product temperature for application is between 75-95ºF. Applying the product cold can be done, but it does not provide proper coverage or consistency. Also, when the product is cold it does not mix well allowing the propellant to escape eventually leaving product in the can with no way to get out. Which brings us to our next tip: Shake well! Heating and mixing allows the user to maximize amount of usable product from the can, leaving little waste. A little goes a long way; a dry film thickness of 0.04 -0.05 mm provides effective protection, so you don’t have to go overboard when spraying. Waxoyl has long been praised for its ability to “stop existing rust and prevent further rust.” Both products can be applied directly on top of existing surface rust. Waxoyl bonds to almost any surface and requires very little preparation before application, but excess oil/ grease and flakes of rust need to be removed to allow t he product to reach the trouble spots. Visit the FAQ at www.Roversnorth.com/waxoyl to learn more about preparing your vehicle for Waxoyl application. At Rovers North, we’ve found Waxoyl 120-4 aerosol cans useful for the following applications: • Metal to metal mating surface preparation during assembly, such as Land Rover Series/Defender door hinge installation. • Coating electrical connections. Waxoyl is an insulator, displaces moisture and bonds even in damp conditions. • As a lubricant all throughout our Land Rovers (e.g.: hinges, lock cylinders, window regulators, etc.) • As a cutting fluid while drilling. Not only does it greatly aid cutting, but it keeps the filing from going all over the place, and should they wander they certainly wont start rusting if they are coating in Waxoyl! • As a lubricant for equipment, such as booms, hydraulic pistons, ect. • As a protective coating for yard equipment and machinery during off-season storage. Hardwax is ideal for the following applications: • Touching up areas where rust has popped out on the underbody or engine compartment. • A quick and easy solution for corrosion that has started on the paintwork from the outside. Tape off the surrounding area and apply Hardwax to contain the problem until it can be properly restored.
• Nuts! Nothing is more frustrating than having a repair come grinding to a halt as you struggle to cut off fasteners bound by rust. Waxoyl is a lubricant and a corrosion inhibitor, what could be better for your hardware? • Just about anywhere else you want a durable anti corrosion/ lubricant! By keeping a few cans of Waxoyl Professional on the shelf you can change fighting corrosion from a time consuming expensive overhaul into a small routine done regularly. I hope you will join us in protecting your Land Rover and preserve the dwindling population of the vehicles we love. BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL By Jeffrey B. Aronson
The QE I, my ’66 Series IIA 88” SW, never felt smoother or quieter. No wonder I was so pleased with the tune-up I gave the car. Admittedly, this moment occurred while the Rover stood stationary on the deck of the ferry, in calm seas. Still, the quietude gave me the time to ponder my Land Rover world. “As Maine goes, so goes the nation,” is a political myth that we trumpet every election season. Right now, gas at my island town’s one pump, courtesy of the local fishermen’s co-op, costs a breathtaking $4.27 a gallon. The rest of the nation seems to be in a lockstep to keep up with us, although I believe that California might be ahead at this time. By 1966 standards, my IIA produced excellent gas mileage at 18 mpg; it’s still pretty good for a 4-wheel drive vehicle today. That doesn’t make it cheap, though. Trips I knew I could make as long as I had a $20 bill in my pocket now require a $50 bill instead. Ask me whose face is on a $50 bill – I have no idea, I don’t see enough of them to remember. Those tricks for incrementally better mileage that you always read about in the British Land Rover magazines suddenly don’t seem so ridiculous. Whereas I once prided myself in cruising our one interstate at the 52
speed limit, that seems less important now. At a stoplight, people behind me should now plan on it taking a little longer for the line to get up to speed; I’m not accelerating any faster. “Full throttle” will be reserved for emergencies only. When performed in nice weather, tune-ups are actually fun to complete. Whether you own a Series Land Rover, a Range Rover Classic or P-38A, or a Discovery I or II, it’s likely paid for or will soon be off payments. This is a great thing right now as auto loan foreclosures are increasing. Buyers seduced by the new car smell and idolatry find themselves behind the 8-ball when they want to unload their cars; too often, they owe more in payments than the sale or trade in value of the car. We won’t even wonder how you are supposed to repair or maintain a new car that requires computer diagnostics when your tool box consists of a socket set and a screwdriver. Anyone seen the hourly rate at a dealership recently? In 6th grade, our teacher administered an aptitude test that would help determine our academic life and likely career choices. He reviewed the results with each of us; when it came to my turn, he said, “Jeffrey, I don’t even know how you can turn a doorknob.” You know those unfolded boxes that evaluate spatial relationships? Well, I could never guess which folded-up one was the correct answer. He advised me, strongly, never to rely on my mechanical abilities – I would develop none. Some of my repair and maintenance experiences would verify the results of this 6th grade test but for the most part, I’ve overcome this shortcoming with a lot of practice, a lot of assistance and a great deal of humor and patience. I am fully aware that if I can maintain a Land Rover, anyone can. Buy your Land Rover once and you can keep it for a long, long time. Regardless of the increasing costs, I’ll continue to use and enjoy my Land Rovers. I need them for work and every trip, although shorter than before, will be a delight
precisely because I’m in the Rover. The sounds, smells and tactile experiences received at the helm of a Land Rover still bring me - and every Rover enthusiast enormous pleasure. _______ ________ Here’s an auto etiquette report. Traveling about 120 miles to lead a program at a rural library I passed a Range Rover Classic coming the other way. I flashed my headlights and he responded the same. Later, I saw an LR 3 coming at me. I waved out the window and the owner returned the wave. The manners of the marque are still strong. _______ ________ The New York Times noted that members of US House of Representatives can get taxpayers to purchase, lease and operate a car for them – and it’s legal. Judging from the lease payment amounts listed in the article, apparently there’s no cap on how big a lease you can take out. “Buy American” doesn’t seem to apply, either, although it’s undoubtedly politically expedient. If you’re a Land Rover enthusiast who would like a new Land Rover, this might be a great time to consider a bid for a seat in the House of Representatives in your state. Sure, you have to spend time in Washington, DC, but there are a lot of Land Rover enthusiasts to help you break the tedium of hearings on arcane legislation. Why attend staged events with people who don’t really like you when you can join the fascinating people who are Land Rover enthusiasts for a convivial evening? It might be a bit late to launch a bid for 2008 but talk to your local Land Rover dealer now in anticipation of the 2010 and 2012 elections. Line up the Rover you want now; we can’t wait to pay for the perk! _______ ________ Perhaps the Royal Family receives copies of The Rovers North News and saw photos of my other ’66 IIA, the QM I, in the magazine; it
does look and sound quite used up. That might explain the email I received from “Queen Elizabeth’s the II Foundation,” located on Woodlands Road, Leatherhead Court, Leatherhead, Surrey, UK. The “importance notice” came to me from Mrs. Rainor Neske, who parsimoniously uses a Yahoo account for all the foundation’s business. While the Foundation was created by the Queen herself, the European Union and the Economic Community for West African States now seem to support and fund the organization. I hate to brag but the Board of Trustees has selected me as a “final recipient” of a cash grant/donation for my own “personal, educational and business development.” I was quite chuffed – she must have read my columns – until I read that my selection came about as “a result of the random selection exercise of internet websites and millions of supermarket cash invoices worldwide.” Well, at any rate, one million pounds awaits me as soon as I send in my personal information. I think I’ll just have them send the check to my account at Rovers North. I’ll start on the complete restoration of the car shortly; I’m sure that Rovers North will call as soon as the check arrives. _______ ________ Chevrolet has some dealerships in Great Britain and their market research people have been busy. According to a survey, 72% of respondents used their car as a status symbol but 95% of them have no idea what they look like behind the wheel of their car. Well, GM cares about you so they got right on it. Now a dealership in Wimbledon has set up a bank of huge mirrors that let you drive your new Chevy up to them and reflect on your splendor; “Mirror, mirror, on the wall,” and all that sort of thing. Chevrolet thinks so highly of this that they’ve created a television ad showing male and female twits doing just that while the Fine Young Cannibals “Good Thing” plays in the background. Land Rover dealers know that you look good in a Rover because it’s a great car, not a hall of mirrors. _______ ________

DISC BRAKE KITS / SERIES II, IIA, III 1960 ON
Front Kit shown PLA6100KV
Now you can install the latest Defender disc brake components onto your trusty 88” or 109” Land Rover and enjoy amazingly quick and controlled stopping power. Front kits are based on a new hub assembly and new swivel ball housing, cast from ductile iron with a minimum strength rating of 80,000 pounds per square inch, this kit is an engineering masterpiece. The front caliper mounts are cast into the housings, just like Defender, to handle the massive 4 piston Defender calipers that grab 12 inch vented Defender discs, just like the NAS 90 enjoys. Timm’s rear conversion kit uses the same hub assemblies with solid Defender rear discs and 2 piston Defender rear calipers. Using all Defender brake components, as well as wheel bearings and seals, means easy service, easy parts availability in the future, and adds directly to the value of your Land Rover. These kits are designed to work with an 88” or 109” dual power master cylinder available on Land Rovers manufactured from 1969 through 1984. For owners with early single non-power system master cylinders, you will need to convert to a dual power master cylinder. This conversion involves installing a vacuum port into your intake manifold, installing a dual power pedal box assembly which houses the dual master cylinder, vacuum servo unit and brake light switch. This pedal assembly is larger in size. It will require modifying your wing top, splashguard mount, and installing a Series III style splashguard. You will then need to re-plumb your clutch master, and install additional brake lines to complete the dual circuit. You will also have the option of adding in a safety failure junction valve, with or without warning light, and choosing between hydraulically or mechanically activated brake lights. These parts can be found in our catalog or on our website in our Series III brake Orders: (800) 403-7591 website: www.roversnorth.com

SIGHTINGS It’s possible that, in the 15 years this Editor has reviewed the Sightings, we’ve received more Sightings than this issue, but we doubt it. Land Rover enthusiasts of all ages throughout North America kept a sharp eye out – or an ear cocked – for any use of a Land Rover to embellish a product or improve a sound. The result was the largest number of Sightings ever. Once again there are superb entries that warrant emptying more of the crockery cupboards at Rovers North. As always, it's helpful for rookies to review the rules for Sightings - and useful as a reminder for the grizzled Sighting veterans as well. Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in a distinctive way. Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won't surprise us, either, and you won't get a mug. We're delighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. You shouldn't be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways to get a coffee mug. Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication we close off the Sightings. If we've mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we won't mention it again. If you're new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Psst...E-mail submissions - remember we can't send a mug by e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might make an error.
