LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Hi Folks, Just had to tell you that I was very satisfied on my last visit to Rovers North. I was received by Steve Haskell and I really appreciated the way that he treated me during my stay. Steve is doing a very nice job; he really knows how to take care of a customer. I also really appreciated visiting your warehouse and shipping department – I was impressed! Congratulations to all of you for your professionalism. Land Rover has to be proud of a flawless Land Rover distributor like you. Thanks, Steve, and the entire Rovers North team, for your help with my Defender 110. With your help, I will keep it for a long time! Mario Poulin Drummondville, Quebec, Canada [Rovers North’s home in Westford, VT, is within an hour of the border with Quebec. We enjoy working with many customers from Canada and always enjoy a visit from them. Bon chance with your Defender 110 – we love to see them used as they were intended! –ed]

Dear Rovers North, I just wanted to say that the snazzy, new, high-backed seat that I bought for my Series II-A fits excellently. It didn’t take more than 15-20 minutes to take out the old non-ergonomic flat seat and put the new spiffy one in. I especially like the neck support and the countered seat portion. My lady friend is certain that my bad back is due to the standard II-A seat. Another product that was surprisingly easy to install was one of your stainless steel exhaust systems. Before beginning, I gave everything a shot of “Kriol,” especially the slip joints and the bolts into the header and manifold. All the old bits came off quite pleasantly. Then, I was dumbfounded to see that each part of the new system slipped right into place; the bends were all correct and all the hangers and fittings fit perfectly. When I got to the last hanger, I was disappointed to find that the very last hanger did not line up with the old hanger mount – just outboard of the frame rail on the right. I looked everywhere and finally had to give up and wire it in place – so fitting for a Series Land Rover! Monday morning, I called Rovers North and a service chap asked me if I had looked inboard of the frame rail. Back out to the garage, and sure enough, there was a similar hanger point just inboard of the frame rail. I have bought a lot of aftermarket British spare parts over the years, mostly for my motorcycles. This seat and exhaust system were a breeze to fit. It’s a sign of really well thought-out and fully developed spare parts. And thank you for your continued support of us Series [Serious] Land Rover drivers. We often receive supposed “Land Rover parts catalogues” that have nothing for real Land Rovers – Series! I get very frustrated. I’m afraid I’m of the faction who feels that “if it’s got plastic on it, it ain’t a real Land Rover.” Glenn Shriver Chicago, IL [Whoa, Glenn, even a Series III has a plastic fascia and grill. After a 6-8 hour drive in my Series II-A, a Range Rover Classic wouldn’t look that bad to me! Part
of the pleasure of ownership of Land Rovers rests in the high quality Genuine Parts and/or Rovers North tested components. They do make maintenance and upgrading a Land Rover quite a pleasure –ed.] Dear Rovers North, A few weeks ago I ordered an NRP cat back exhaust and OME shocks for my 1997 Discovery Series I. The NRP was a wonderful installation. The pre-welded hangers were in the exact right position. It’s tucked out of the way better than the stock system, doesn’t rattle, the car breathes much better, and the sound is very nice – certainly better than the blown pipe that I’ve been driving with for much too long! As for the Old Man Emu shocks, one of your service technicians called after I placed my online order. He asked specific questions about the vehicle’s use, and recommended a different spring rate. I’m very pleased with the results. While not as simple as the exhaust install, it wasn’t bad and the car drives much better than the stock suspension every did. Thanks for the excellent service! Steve Czadzeck [Via email] [Congratulations on the upgrades of your Discovery. The staff at Rovers North works hard to learn about every product and its best application. We want your Land Rover experience to be the best possible. –ed] Dear Rovers North, Has anyone else mentioned how the Greenpeace logo looks like the Land Rover logo? William Kendall Centerville, VA [Greenpeace does use a green oval, but it’s not THE Green Oval – ed] Dear Rovers North, Miss my ’94 AA Yellow Defender – love my Series ’59 Series 109 Regular! Scott Maurere Florence, OR [You have really lived in two wonderful Land Rover worlds – a Defender and then a Series II. Wow! –ed]
Dear Rovers North, I loved the May issue of the Rovers North News. Thanks for being the best! Ryan Smyth Montclair, NJ [Thanks for being an avid reader! –ed] Dear Rovers North, I have a wonderful 1993 Range Rover Classic LWB with 64,500, but would love a Defender 90 hardtop (minus any Lucas options –lol) and hope to get one soon. D. Aaron Conway St. Louis Park, MN [With the addition of your Defender you would have two of Land Rovers’ finest vehicles –ed]. Dear Rovers North, I was just wondering if you could let me know one way or the other if I was or wasn’t going
to receive a “Sightings mug.” I had sent in a Sighting a couple of weeks ago and I haven’t heard one way or the other if I won a mug (I’m assuming no news means I didn’t win one). It would be nice to know one way or the other. Thanks for your time, Matt Chelf Wooster, OH [The Sightings is one of the most popular sections of the magazine. We receive nearly 100 entries between each issue and we credit every participant (unless the Sighting has been mentioned in a previous issue). We gather all the Sightings just before we complete each issue and review all the Sightings at the same time to determine whether they are “mug worthy.” Unfortunately, it’s not possible logistically to determine Sightings winners on a running basis. Keep sending us your Sightings as they’re great fun to read! –ed.]
Dear Rovers North, We were coming home from the movies (Shrek 3 – no Rovers in it) and happened to pull up next to the Russian “Around the World” team, a Defender 110 and a Toyota Land Cruiser. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to talk…darn traffic. But it was nice to see a 110 in El Paso, TX. That makes a total of three Defenders I’ve seen and the only 110. Not bad for a guy who owns an 88”, eh? Chuck Carrig El Paso, TX [Unless I go to Land Rover rallies, I don’t see many Defenders on the road, either, but it certainly is exciting to spot them! –ed] _______ ________

The 2007 Defender – Bring It On Home to Me Story By: Jeffrey B. Aronson Photos By: Land Rover
It’s impossible not to want one. Not only has Land Rover proved the iconic standard-bearer, but they’ve even returned the name “Land Rover” to the front of the bonnet. Just like in the days of Land Rover 90’s and 110’s, the name behind the Green Oval sits boldly on the prow of the car. What’s standing in the way of importation into the US market? One impediment comes from the powertrain end. The Td5 delivered impressive performance and longevity, but was replaced with the Ford Transit motor because of emission reasons . As Mike Gould of Land Rover Lifestyle writes elsewhere in this issue, the regulatory focus of the EU is carbon dioxide levels, while the fractured US regulations focus on particulates and nitrous oxide levels. 10
Land Rover must also confront the potential instability that will arise whenever new corporate parents are found for Land Rover and Jaguar. The Td5 was the last engine designed and built by Land Rover. With Land Rover now relying on Ford supplied engines, the new parents will find themselves in the uncomfortable position of relying on Ford for its engines. A second impediment is the lack of SRS. Land Rover contends the Defender is too rigid and would require a total structural redesign to integrate air bags into its interior. Maybe, but American full size pick up trucks look pretty rigid too, and they all have air bags. Lets face it, if Ford wanted Defender here they could certainly make it happen. So, maybe Defender will benefit the most from new parents. Certainly contenders like Tata of India would not overlook the potential of investing in a vehicle as basic, and as versatile as the Defender. As we watch Hummer, Jeep and Toyota fill in their lineups with Defender alternatives we have to ask the question: Why is it that Ford does not offer a single off-road vehicle? Also in the issue, you will see the byline of our English correspondent, Rob Basaras, of South Woodham Ferrers, near Chelmsford, England. We asked Robbie to source out a Defender for a test drive. That proved to be a great challenge. As Robbie wrote in July “my local dealership has sold 17 just a day or two after their delivery from Solihull! The dealership has maybe 25 Freelanders [LR2 in the US–ed], 25 Discoverys [LR3 in the US –ed] 15 Range Rovers, and if you're lucky, two Defenders. They seem to sell themselves and go within a couple of days!” Robbie is nothing if not industrious, and when a neighbor who works at Ford brought home a Defender 110 County Station Wagon, Robbie felt the urge to reaffirm their friendship. Sadly, it only sat in his driveway for a night. "That's not to say I didn't crawl over it and have a damn good look" . “Another big step forward concerns the front doors. Although they still have the single door seal and can suffer from water egress, they seem to be pressed as one unit rather in contrast to my 2002 version which is made up of a welded frame around the window. this appears as seamless curves around the window frame. I'm guessing this is an effort to fix the 60 year history of water leaks!” Robbie’s not alone in his assessment. Land Rover Owner International called the Defender “smoother, quieter, warmer, more comfy, has a higher cruising speed and gets around corners better. “The Defender’s 2.4 liter, 4-cylinder diesel is “not just a bit better that the Td5, it’s way better – you notice the considerable extra torque both on and off the road, making it even more fun to drive in either environment. The short-shifting, six-speed gearbox is a delight to use as well. Now, there’s something you’d never have said about a Defender until now.” Between the torque curve and the new gearbox, LROI’s testers note they spent “more time in low third than low-second” on an off-road course. There’s only one engine option for the Defender but Land Rover still lists 27 different body configurations between the 90, 110, and 130 models. Inside, the Defender should meet US market expectations. You may not think your Defender needs leather seats, twin cupholders, an entertainment system with an MP3 input, ABS
and Traction Control, air conditioning, heated seats and windshield and electric windows, but the XS edition does come in Sage Green. If you and/or the significant person in your life need these trappings of luxury, at least it will enable you to find all of this in a Defender. AutoInsider.com clearly loves the new car. They approach the Defender this way. “Conventional machines tend to work on five or six year cycles, and when the time comes most of the old car is thrown away, apart from the odd oily bit or two. If it’s a bit special it might hang on a few years more, but no car has ever completely transcended the rules quite like the Land Rover Defender. The original car first appeared in 1948, and should you be able to park a 2007 model alongside an original, the similarities are unquestionable.”
“It’s not because Land Rover has been lazy, far from it in fact. The problem is that the original, and the generations of models that followed it were so damned good that creating an all-new Defender was something of a problem.” Now that’s a problem I would like to have for US enthusiasts! _______ ________

First Annual Spring Rover Run
Morrow County OHV Park Story By: Shirley Vander Veen Photos courtesy of Pamela Petroff & P.C.R.C The Washington contingent of leader Rich Williams, Jim McPherson, Allen Minner, Shirley Vander Veen and grandson Michael met at the North Bend Bar and Grill for a leisurely breakfast on Friday morning. It set the mood for the trip – much talk of Rovering, jokes and laughter. To further impress that this was a Rover trip, Allen then installed some fuses he had just acquired at the local NAPA shop. We had decided we would follow two lane highways as much as possible, but I-90 was not to be denied in crossing Snoqualmie Pass. At Ellensburg, we hit the two lane and took Hwy 821 following the Yakima River. The river cuts its way through the massive Columbia River lava flows from about eight million years ago, and provides trout rich waters in the deep canyon. Then it was interstate for a while, but Allen found an appropriate historical landmark to visit for our gas-thirsty Landies. It was the infamous Teapot Dome gas station. And, yes, it is shaped like a teapot and, no, there was no gas to be had. At Prosser, we hopped on Hwy 221 which took us across the wheat fields, vineyards, and sagebrush of Horse Heaven Hills. The countryside was scenic with wide-open vistas and distant horizons. The blue of the Columbia dotted with whitecaps was a welcome sight as we descended from the plateau to the river level. Just outside of Umatilla, we picked up Hwy 207 which took us down to Lexington. While driving towards Lexington, we were soon followed by a logging truck on its way home for the weekend. He picked up our chatter on CB channel 5 after, Jim had suggested that we pull aside to let him pass. The trucker got on his CB and let us 16
know we were not slowing him down. After a short exchange, we learned that the trucker turned out to be an ATV enthusiast and was familiar with the Morrow County OHV Park. In fact, he offered to show us a short cut to the park. He was as good as his word and we left the highway for local roads, bypassed Heppner, and arrived at the OHV park without incident. The Morrow County ORV park had a very nice tenting area with fire rings and picnic tables. A nice grassy lawn, backed by pine trees, was blooming with yellow Glacier Lilies. This scenic spot would be home for two nights. Our group was the only one in the tenting area and we had plenty of room to spread out to find the perfect tent site. Awaiting our arrival in the campground, were Chuck Briggs of Tigard, and Jim and Jeff Clark. Soon Clark Bowen of Salem joined us. Just as night was falling Doug and Jean Shipman arrived from their scouting trip for the 4th of July Run. As darkness settled around us, we drew up closer to the fire and awaited one more arrival: Gord’n Perrot. Well, some of us waited up. My grandson and I wimped out and turned in for the night. But, judging from how the firelight played on our tent, I think Gord’n probably homed in on the fire from at least two ridges away. Gord’n was the last one in on Friday night and was the first one up Saturday morning. All were up early with the sun. The coals of the fire were coaxed back into flame and we gathered for breakfast, coffee and tea while we awaited more of our group. Buzz Chandler and Junko joined us for the day, rising early and driving from Portland.
The first order of the day was a tech session with Doug and Gord’n, discussing recovery techniques and equipment. Gord’n pointed out that one of the most important items was to check over your rig, at home, before hitting the road. They emphasized the importance of recovery points, front and rear, of having tow straps and shackles, of caring for your winch and making sure the towline
members Jason Connolly, with wife Kim, children Caroline and Colin arrived just in the nick of time before joining the group heading out in search of more trails. Saturday night, we had a BBQ with Rich officiating at the Cat-a-que. For the uninitiated, the Cat-a-que is a BBQ built in the body of an old Caterpillar tractor. Hamburgers, hot dogs and all the

We discussed the merits of a cable towline versus a synthetic towline. Then Doug gave us a good demonstration of driving up a narrow rocky defile. After that, it was a free for all in the gravel pit. Everyone chose their own line of difficulty to follow. There were Rovers all over! By then, Ed Perez and sons, Antonio and Emilio, had joined us. Ed continued our tech session by breaking an axle on a steep uphill run. Fortunately, he still had three wheels with traction and could participate in the afternoon trail runs. Doug promptly came to the rescue and demonstrating the effectiveness of a kinetic tow rope and yanked Ed, and his limping Range Rover, out of the quarry pit. The Morrow County OHV park contains over six thousand acres and has a myriad of trails for the motor bike, ATV and four-wheeler alike. We chose to start with Trail Number 1, which was rated as easy. But soon other trails beckoned and Allen had the honor of attempting an extremely tight squeeze through the trees. He gave it a good try, but stopped as he realized his nice white Range Rover would not continue to look so good on the passenger side. Rich came forward with his 1963 Series IIA and a tow strap to give Allen a little sideways tug for a non-damaging exit. After lunch, several of us elected to spend the rest of the afternoon back in camp while the more adventurous tackled some of the more difficult trails. New PLRC
fixings were on the menu with many pitch-in dishes. The potato salad provided by Chuck’s wife was much appreciated. No one went away hungry. The day ended with all gathered around another big fire. The buttermilk clouds did not do much to dim the moonlight and the stars added their twinkle to the night sky. Sunday dawned and too soon breakfast was eaten, tents struck, and we were loaded up for the trip home. The Oregonians went their separate ways home but, Doug had a special treat in mind for the Washington drivers. He led us over to a single-track lane named Dead Man’s Loop, just off of Hwy 207. It traversed beautiful countryside and had just enough mud to make it fun. Then it was back north on Hwy 207. Taking a left on Hardman Ridge Road, we drove west with incredible expansive views to the north and the south on this gravel super highway. We spread out, trying to escape the ever-present dust. Doug was driving fast and his dust cloud faded in the distance. But, not to worry, there were pictures to take and countryside to enjoy for the Washington west-siders. We worked our way over to 97 and headed north and home with many good memories of our Oregon sojourn. _______ ________

LION RAMPANT Story By Mike Gould / Photos By Elliott Raymond / Engine illustrations courtesy Land Rover Engine Design Article reprint from LRL August 2007
The idea of pulling up to the diesel pump at a gas station in a luxury SUV may seem strange to most Americans, but in Europe, it is an everyday occurrence. If the trend spotters are right, a lot more American drivers will be doing it soon, as well. To subscribe to LRL visit www.lrlmag.com or roversnorth.com
The major reason for buying a diesel car is improved mileage. For example, the latest 2007 model year Range Rover fitted with the TDV8 diesel engine reaches 60 mph only 0.3 seconds slower than its naturally aspirated V8 petrol equivalent, but goes 32 percent further on a gallon of fuel on the European combined cycle. Not only does improved economy mean you go further for each dollar spent on fuel, it also means greater range and the convenience of fewer visits to the gas station. With these advantages, coupled with diesel car manufacturers’ lobbying for the same tax breaks as hybrids, it’s no wonder that JD Power and Associates is forecasting that diesel powered vehicles,
widely available. A recent survey by Autobytel Inc. revealed that 72 percent of Americans would consider buying a diesel car. With low-sulphur diesel on average to be $0.36 per gallon cheaper than regular gasoline according to Energy Information Administration (EIA) as of June 2007, Americans appear ready to look the other way to availability problems in some areas (the Diesel Technology Forum estimates that only 42 percent of stations sell the fuel).
currently accounting for 3.4 percent of the U.S. market, will overtake hybrids to claim 15 percent of the market in the next four years. Another weapon in the diesel’s arsenal is that the technology is less complex than that of hybrids. The vehicles are not encumbered by the extra weight of batteries and regenerating equipment, while customers also get a more conventional driving experience—and one they have grown to like. Underlining this, BMW is suggesting that

The European experience is mainly due to the price of diesel, which, in most countries, considerably undercuts that of petrol. Add the improved mileage and it’s no wonder that diesel powered vehicles predominate in all sectors. The one exception to the pricing structure is the United Kingdom, where diesel fuel carries a stinging tax penalty, making it the most expensive fuel in Europe. Even there, however, diesel vehicles are increasing their share of the market, particularly in the SUV sector, so much so that Land Rover has stopped sales of the 4.4-litre V8 gasoline engine derivative of the LR3, known in Europe as the Discovery 3. Demand in the US appears equally strong if diesel vehicles were
their future vehicle strategy lies with more efficient vehicles, not hybrids. There are a growing number of diesel vehicles available on the American market. Mercedes offers diesel power on their GL320 CDI, ML 320 CDI and R320 CDI SUVs, and on their E320 BLUETEC® sedan. Daimler-Chrysler’s stable mate, Jeep, offers the same engine in their Grand Cherokee model. VW offers the Touareg in V-10 diesel form, while German rival BMW has announced that models equipped with their six-cylinder diesel engine will be on sale in 2008. The stricter emission standards of California, Massachusetts, Maine, New York and Vermont currently preclude sales in these states, but manufacturers are working on full, 50-state compliance. Fuel-efficient diesels are generally regarded as being less polluting than their gasoline equivalents. They produce less of the green house gas, carbon dioxide (CO2), and most are now capable of also running on biomass-derived fuels, mixed with refined fossil fuels. On the downside, diesel has come under fire for its greater output of nitrogen oxide (NOX) and emission of particulates or soot. But it’s not just about increased mileage and the environment. Modern diesels are actually very satisfying to drive, in some cases more so than their gasoline equivalents. Gone are the clanking, smoky oil burners of the past, replaced by quiet, powerful and torquey power units with a character all their own. This is certainly true of the latest Land Rover diesel engines, the TDV6 and the TDV8. Both are results of a long-standing collaboration between the Ford Motor Company and PSA Peugeot-Citroen. The third phase of this collaboration was Ford led, with the production of the TDV6 engine announced in June 2003. Code-named “Lion” after the Peugeot trademark, the TDV6 engine is built at Ford’s plant in Dagenham, England and installed in the Discovery 3 for European and other markets. It is now also fitted to the Range Rover Sport and powers the Jaguar S-Type and Jaguar XJ, as well as various Peugeot and Citroen models. The TDV6 was followed by the TDV8 version, intended solely for the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover and introduced for the 2007 model year vehicle. Land Rover insiders suggest that the Lion family is merely at the start of its life, with exciting developments in the pipeline. Rumors stemming from an interview with retired Ford executive Dave Szczupak suggested that the TDV8 will be fitted in the US
20
market to the Ford F-150 pickup by 2009 but our findings suggest otherwise. The company is denying that this fitment was ever under consideration. The engine is overly sophisticated for a pickup, and with the current exchange rate, the imported price would give Ford’s cost accountants a few sleepless nights. The cylinder blocks of both the TDV6 and the TDV8 are cast in Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI), with computer-aided design and modern casting techniques, achieving both a light weight and extraordinary stiffness, which lies at the heart of the engine’s refinement. The engine changes optimize the degree of separation between the cylinder banks, the V6 being at 60o while the V8 is at 90o. Other factors help improve the engine, too. The engine has a compression ratio of only 17.3:1, much lower than other diesels, to prevent their characteristic clatter. The pistons have a special crown design to optimize combustion, while the lubrication system cools the piston, further reducing noise.” While the two engines have a lot in common, there are some fundamental differences; the V8 is not just the V6 with two extra cylinders. The cylinder heads are cast in aluminium and house four valves per cylinder driven through twin camshafts for each bank. For the V6 they are belt driven, while the extra power and torque of the V8 demands a simplex bush chain for the intake valve gear and gearwheels for the exhaust camshaft. Both engines have intercoolers to increase the density of the incoming air, and while the V6 has a single, top-mounted turbocharger, the V8 employs twin units slung underneath the cylinder banks. The turbochargers use variable nozzle technology with vanes in the turbine intake that move to optimize its response according to engine rpm. Use of variable nozzles also eliminates the need for a wastegate. The position of the turbo chargers on the V8 diesel is dictated by a steeper bank angle and requires a unique oil scavenge system to ensure lubrication at the angles likely to be encountered during off-road use. The inlet manifold on both engines incorporates valves for the port deactivation system, which, in certain conditions, closes one of the ports feeding fuel into the engine, optimizing the combustion characteristics to reduce noise and emissions. The engines use the latest, high-pressure, common rail injection technology with piezo-electric controlled injectors for micro-control over the fuel charge. There can be up to five bursts of fuel into the cylinders per combustion cycle, improving fuel consumption and refinement and reducing emissions. The quest for ultimate refinement continues with the use of computer simulated “modal separation” techniques. With each
component and ancillary having its own fundamental frequency, it’s important that they don’t combine to produce undesirable resonances. The compact size of the V configuration engines means that there’s plenty of room in the engine bay for noise damping acoustic covers. In a typical European installation, the Lion TDV6 produces 190 bhp at 4,000 rpm and develops 325 pounds-feet of torque, peaking at 1,900 rpm. Its bigger brother, the TDV8, produces 268 bhp at 4,000 rpm, while torque is an impressive 472 pounds-feet at 2,000 rpm. For the Discovery 3 TDV6 automatic, Land Rover quotes 27.2 miles per Imperial gallon (26.4 miles per US gallon) on the European combined cycle. The Range Rover TDV8 achieves 25.1 miles per Imperial gallon (24.3 miles per US gallon) on the same basis. So with all this technology providing impressive power and muscle car torque while returning good mileage, what’s stopping Land Rover from launching it in the American market? The first issue for Land Rover is one of perception. Image courtesy Ford Land Rover is a premium brand, and the Range Rover is its premium name plate. The company is obviously concerned that diesel fueled vehicles are still considered dirty and smelly by many US consumers. Customers may also think that it’s hard to find filling stations with diesel pumps. The next issue is emission compliance. Manufacturers, including Land Rover, have to contend with a wide variety of emission standards for diesel engines. Differing regulations apply in the European Union (EU) and Japan, while the U.S. has two sets of standards. The strictest applies to the states of California, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Vermont, states that follow regulations set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The other 45 states of the Union apply more lenient standards. All concentrate on what they regard as the major pollutants, have different test cycles and categorize vehicles in different ways. Faced with the costs involved in producing a wide range of compliant vehicles, manufacturers are lobbying for harmonization, but this seems a long way off. In Europe, regulations target emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), a gas produced by incomplete fuel combustion which oxidizes in the atmosphere to produce CO2. In the U.S., NOX, which leads, among other things, to acid rain and the photochemical smog that affects cities like Los Angeles, is the main target. The greater fuel efficiency of diesel engines produces less CO, meeting European
regulations, but their higher operating temperatures produce more NOX, so complying with U.S. regulations is problematic. U.S. regulations, especially those instituted by CARB, are also much stricter with regard to particulate emissions. However, the recent advent of low-sulfur diesel fuel in the US made the fitting of Diesel Particulate Filters and NOX-reducing cataysts practical in sedans and SUVs, and European manufacturers were quick to take advantage. The ultimate aim is full, 50-state compliance. This requires the injection of urea, an ammonia-like fluid, into a Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) system. This reducing agent can be carried in a tank that is easily filled up, but if it runs dry, the vehicle’s emissions will be non-compliant. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently advised manufacturers of its approach to SCR systems, specifying the distance required between fill-ups and the methods to be put in place to prevent the reducing agent running dry or being replaced by an inappropriate fluid. These include driver warnings, and ultimately, ways to prevent the vehicle from being driven without urea. The size of the tank for the reducing agent, enough to last between scheduled service intervals as required by the EPA, has been estimated to be up to 10 gallons, a significant packaging problem for engineers, but meeting these requirements will open the door to 50-state diesel sales. Land Rover’s official position is that it is right now looking at all alternative fuels for the future and is exploring the feasibility of bringing diesel engines into North America. However, they cite packaging and engine-related issues that need to be resolved before their introduction is possible. With 20 percent of Land Rover sales concentrated in California alone, they will need to come up with a full, 50-state compliant solution to make the sales of diesel-powered vehicles viable. Market forces may yet force Land Rover’s hand. There is a growing lobby arguing that efficient diesel power, rather than complex hybrids, is the way forward in the search for a cleaner environment. With the advent of modern, low-sulfur fuels and sophisticated engines, diesel power is losing its old stigma. Mercedes is reporting a “very strong” take-up rate on their ML 320 CDI model, and with BMW waiting in the wings with a range of diesel powered cars, it may not be long before the Lion’s roar is heard across North America. _______ ________

BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL By Jeffrey B. Aronson So when I saw the a family member biking down a road with his children, I could not help but slow down as I passed him and yell out, “See – it is too faster than a bicycle!” His parting shot of “in your dreams” was just so lame. _______ ________
Land Rover ownership is not for the bashful. Don’t become a Land Rover enthusiast if you crave anonymity. To quote Martha and the Vandellas, “nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.” A vehicle as distinctive as a Land Rover – any model will do – does not blend into the landscape; it stands up and testifies to your character. In my case, the QE I, my ’66 Series II-A 88” SW, has drawn the attention of the family that owns and operates our local boatyard. For decades husband, wife and adult children have taken much glee in the condition of my Land Rover. Should one pass me in their truck while I am walking somewhere they will ask the same question. “Need a ride? Did it break down?” If I try and explain a simple repair to them, they will break down in gales of laughter to note they haven’t carried a tool in the family Ford Expedition since its purchase. Their attitude may have something to do with their ownership of two Ford Model A’s that have run trouble-free. One year on his birthday I gave the father a framed photo of the Land Rover with a printed voucher good for one ride. The voucher remains open.

You can live vicariously through your Land Rover. You may be driving to a golf course in your LR3 but in your mind those sand traps become exciting places to try out the “sand” setting on the Terrain Response system. Certainly any time I venture down a dirt lane for daily work in my II-A, I am not in charted Maine but in uncharted landscapes. In April I conversed with correspondent Randy Dickson of White River Junction, VT. When I asked him “what’s your job?” he responded with a short answer. “I’m an industrial arts teacher,” he said. Then he asked me the same question. Oh, boy, this is going to take a while. Like many people in Maine and throughout northern New England, I have multiple jobs, depending on the seasons. Painting houses, caretaking summer properties, wood cutting and clearing are best accomplished in drier, warmer weather. In northern New England, that means late spring, summer or early fall. Fortunately for me, I have other jobs - editing this magazine, assisting at our local school, building web sites, public humanities programs and bartending. Reading, talking, surfing the web and drinking occur year round. This island is the size of an English town, about 4 miles wide and 9 miles long. You’re not going to put on a lot of miles working here. Good thing, too, for gas has risen to nearly $4.00 per gallon. The island school lies 1 mile from the village. After working there one morning I walked to the parking lot with Amanda, our school secretary. “Amanda,” I said, “how would you like a ride to the village in my Land Rover, the ‘Chick
Magnet’?” She laughed and said, “Jeff, I’ve only got 30 minutes for lunch!” Summer people have commented to me that my two ’66 Series II-A’s are perfect vehicles for the island. Unknowingly they treat the Land Rovers as if they were delicate antiques, unable to withstand the rigors of daily use. Wrong! The Station Wagon and the Hardtop are perfect vehicles for daily use. You also have room for a lawn mower, fuel cans, a weed whacker, or gallons of paint, brushes, tarpaulins, scrapers, sanders, rolls of roofing and a 24’ ladder. Even an 88” wheelbase will permit carrying of a lot of construction debris and landscaping detritus to the local dump. Leave some of the gear behind and you can transport a crew of 4 in jump seat comfort. The weather has been screwy in Maine this year. Winter came late, in February, with hard cold and little snow. March and April brought heavy snowfalls and two nor’easters that battered the entire state. On May 1; it is snowed in Caribou, Maine. The weather extended the heating season and emptied out the wood pile. Heavy snowmelt and hard spring rains made the fields and woods quite wet and boggy. Major storms hit in June and July; August has witnessed fog and damp weather usually associated with June weather. Cool weather overall meant that fetching wood for the stove has been a steady need. Fold up the rear seats in the station wagon, remove the ammo box [my version of the fabled “Continental Touring Kit”] and the crate full of “Car in A Can” fluids, and you have a lot of room in which to stuff firewood. One evening a new summer family came into the bar for food and drink. They’re Connecticut residents building a summer home on newly-cleared waterfront. My ears perked up – what are you doing with the logged trees? In fact, they had some local brothers clear the land and cut the trees into log length already. If they didn’t want the
wood, I was free to drive down and take it. A phone call the next day cleared the way for me to add to my depleted woodpile. When I arrived at the lane to their lot, I got out of the Rover to walk the land. It sloped down steadily towards the rocky shore. The ground was quite soft with runoff, but I noticed some ledge and rocks in the ground that should provide solid footing. I got back in the Rover and drove down in first gear low range to the wood stacked near the shore. I loaded up the Rover with wood stacked nearly to the roof. Then I headed back up the hill. English magazines will tell often about the challenges of off off-roading in slippery grassy fields. They’re right. My route required that I turn left and then head up a steep rise with no room to gain momentum. The Rover’s wheel started to spin in first low range. Shifting into second lessened the wheelspin but I couldn’t get enough speed to make it up the hill. I considered shifting into high range 4-wheel drive but I knew that first gear would be too low for the entire run up the hill; shifting a non-synchro II-A on the fly just looses momentum. After a few tries I could see ruts forming in the field, so I got out of the car to plan a different route. I had no desire to empty the Rover of wood – it had taken too much energy to stuff it in. Taking a longer way round would give me more room for momentum, but take me across potentially softer ground. Just in case, I knew I had my Hi-Lift for assistance, so I gave the new route a try. Fortunately, it worked! _______ ________
If you have friends who are also Land Rover enthusiasts, you can live vicariously through their cars, too. One of my Series II-A’s is shared with another island resident. This ’66 II-A 88” HT, which we’ve named the QM I, was a former Vermont estate farm truck. We love it to death but it presents my partners, Hugh and Sue, with two problems. It’s too small for Hugh’s 6’ 4” frame and too heavy for Sue’s petite frame, so it hasn’t gotten much use during their half of the year. The II-A has also seemed just a bit primitive for regular use to them, particularly in the traffic
on the mainland. So it was no surprise to me when Hugh started to ask a lot of questions about Defenders and Discoverys. While the latter appealed to Hugh on the basis of price he determined he didn’t need the complexity and passenger comfort of a Discovery. He needed the utility, the strength and the excitement of a Defender. Proving that she’s destined for sainthood, Sue agreed and the search began in earnest. Happily, they made me part of the shopping expedition. I scoured the Rovers N o r t h customer sales list and the website for leads. We wanted a local vehicle so that Hugh could determine whether he’d be comfortable in the car; we had omitted this step with our shared II-A and Hugh didn’t discover how cramped the II-A was until after its purchase. I lucked out when I stopped at East Coast Rover on a trip to the mainland. There stood a ’95 Defender 5-speed soft top with low mileage, a Warn winch, scruffy appearance but well-maintained and equipped mechanically. Mike Smith’s company had outfitted and maintained the vehicle for most of its life and the car sounded great, even with a rotted out exhaust system. Hugh and Sue drove the car a few days later, made an offer, and then began the fun process of outfitting the car to their preferences. Should they keep the air lockers, return the car to a stock rear end ratio and original sills, add driving lights, accept the drafts of the original Tickford top or upgrade to higher quality tops? Sharing their shopping list, most of it unaffordable to me, proved highly entertaining. By the time of publication, I should have received my first ride in their Defender. Congratulations and thanks for the fun!
My love of British cars came through my mother’s affection for the country in which she spent her early decades; as a youngster, I made three trips to England to visit the family. In a toy store in Manchester, I became a huge fan of Matchbox cars. There I discovered that British manufacturers constructed sports cars and Land Rovers, not just the Hillman Huskys and other Rootes products purchased by my mum’s family. The Land Rover models captivated me. My father, a diehard B u i c k o w n e r, scoffed at the idea of purchasing a Land Rover, preferring his station wagons with fins rather than jump seats. The Land Rover model disappeared over time but it never left my mind. To this day, I still envy enthusiasts with Matchbox Car collections. So it was with sadness that I read of the death Jack Odell last July. Odell was the engineer who created the Matchbox model car. By the time of his death, over 3 billion copies of some 12,000 different vehicles had been made. He started in 1953 with a tiny steamroller, manufactured in London in a building that once housed a pub called The Rifleman. The next vehicle selected was a Land Rover. A year later an MG TD began the long series of car models. At 49 cents, Matchbox cars became huge sellers worldwide. Some of the cars had over 100 die-cast parts, despite their diminutive size mandated by school regulations that barring toys later than a matchbox in size. Engineering made the Matchbox car more than just a toy just as engineering makes a Land Rover far more than just an SUV. Thanks, Mr. Odell, for making the world a better place for boys and girls of all ages.

Bilstein® is the world leader in gas-pressurized shock absorber technology. Technically the most advanced shock available today, Bilstein utilizes a one piece seamless monotube design filled with oil and nitrogen gas in a pressurized, sealed compartment. Completely eliminates any foaming of the oil and the monotube design helps dissipate heat to prevent shock fade. Bilstein’s shock bodies are precision-formed through a unique seamless manufacturing process. We recommend for use with Land Rover Genuine Standard or Heavy Duty springs. DISCOVERY II REAR AIR TO GENUINE COIL SPRING CONVERSION KIT
Roadside Mechanic Story & Photo By Calef Letorney
In a new series called Roadside Mechanic, Waxoyl USA wants to salute those enthusiasts with the pluck and determination to fix their mechanical situations on the side of the road or trail rather than suffer the embarrassment of calling a tow truck. Are you a “Roadside Mechanic? Tell us your story in about 1,000 words! If your story is chosen to run in the Rovers North News Waxoyl USA will give you a Rovers North gift certificate worth $75.00.
The plan was to drive my Ex- MOD 300 TDI 110 from Salt Lake City, Utah to Vermont in three days, by myself, fully loaded and pulling a heavy trailer, in the middle of a July heat wave. To succeed I needed to drive at least 15 hours a day. Like many early Defenders, mine lacks air conditioning, so I knew the trip was going to be physically exhausting for both me and my Rover. The goal of three days travel time would only be possible if I had no mechanical issues; the stage was set for what would become an epic journey. I left Salt Lake City plagued by uncertainty, feeling like I was limping home to fix my mechanical issues. Limping BEFORE the 3000 mile drive, not good. I didn’t have one issue that really bothered me, more a smattering of minor problems: there was the cracked headlight that burnt out the bulb, a fast failing clutch master cylinder that still functioned about 70% of the time, the fender that had fallen off my trailer, the mud flap that had fallen off my truck, and the 38
lingering memory of the front left wheel falling off at 70 MPH in Colorado a few weeks earlier. All these seemingly minor issues combined to heighten my sensitivity and overall paranoia of potential mechanical issues. So I got the oil changed and fluids toped off, projected some positive energy, drank some caffeine, and started driving. On day one my spirits were high and the sailing was smooth. I easily crossed the mountains of Utah and Wyoming, and entered the flats of Nebraska. Predominantly running slightly downhill with a tail wind I had no trouble pulling 80-85 MPH through most of the “Cornhusker State.” With around a thousand miles under my belt I pulled over around eleven to sleep in the back of my truck. Day one had been as smooth as could be and I was happy to be on my way home. Day two started less favorably. I woke to the depressing realization that I still had two full days of driving ahead of me. All of a sudden the drive was not very exciting and my music collection was not so entertaining. The latter turned out to be a non-issue when my battery health meter started reading negative. Concerned about alternator troubles I decided to turn the radio off and enjoy the sound of my Rover’s aerodynamic inefficiency. While less entertaining than the radio, I was trying to look on the bright side by reminding myself that listening to road noise really helps monitor the mechanical health of the Rover. If something were to go wrong, I should be able to hear it first, right? I proved that theory wrong about a half hour later when I felt a violent lurch and a total loss of power. If you have ever been driving along in your Land Rover and heard a clunk followed by the engine revving, you know it is not a happy sensation but not always cause for panic. Occasionally the
transmission pops out of high range back into neutral, but I find this only happens shortly after shifting from low range to high range. So I was able to rule that really attractive theory out right away because I had not touched that lever in over a thousand miles. This left me coasting to the side of the highway, optimistically pondering what sort of small mishap could have caused my temporary lack of power, when the rear wheels suddenly locked up and start skidding, oh joy! Luckily the skidding only lasted a second, but the optimism was permanently gone and I knew something was really wrong. When I was safely in the grass on the side of the highway, I crawled under the Rover to have a look-see. The immense amount of smoke from the rear differential was the only clue this home mechanic needed to diagnose the problem. I smoked the rear diff, literally. My next thought was automatic: What do I need to do to get home in front wheel drive? Because there ain’t no way am I hanging out in whatever nondescript flat State I am in right now, in a town whose primary purpose is to service the trucking industry that rolls through I-80, while I wait for Rovers North to send me the parts. The first task was obvious. I had to disconnect the drive shaft to remove power to the differential. I would be traveling home in front wheel drive anyways, so I might as well remove the connection from the problem diff to the transfer box. The nuts on the hand break drum came off quite easily. Unfortunately the diff side was a lot harder. Scolding hot, covered in oil, and baked on I wrestled with the 4 bolts that hold the drive shaft onto the diff for over a half hour. Admittedly I lost my cool, and called my baby a “Piece of shit Ford” several times. Sadly our relationship has not been the same since. When I was done I quickly picked up my tools, engaged the diff lock and slowly drove to the next exit. At this point I realized I was not
only covered in oil but also sweat and grass clippings that had stuck to the oil/sweat mixture, so I made use of the truck stop’s shower facility, which is fantastic by the way. Then I called my father, who politely reminded me I needed to pull the half axles out to prevent the possibly ceased spider gears from locking the wheels again. He predicted it would take me about an hour to pull the hub cap, lock ring, drive flange, and axle then replace the drive flange and hub cap on both sides. “OK time me.” Twenty-seven minutes later I was back on the road feeling like nothing could stop me, a feeling that lasted through the rest of day two and a few miles into day three. I hit the road early on day three as I had lost time to make up. The Rover was pulling great in front wheel drive, and I was in a great mood, because for the first time in over a month and a half I would be sleeping in my own bed. Then I heard another loud clunk, followed by several hollow clanks. In my side mirror I saw sparks flying. It is not often you loose a piece of your Rover on the road, but it is a pretty unmistakable feeling, one that I had now experienced twice on this trip. What could have possibly fallen off now?! I pulled over to the side of the road and stopped, thinking, well at least I still have power and brakes. When I attempted to engaged my hand brake I instantly knew the problem. I pulled up on the hand brake and there was no tension. Whoops! A quick peak under confirmed my fears, I had lost the handbrake drum. The hand brake drum is primarily held on by the drive shaft, which I removed and neglected to replace the nuts tightly. The drum had stayed on for at least 500 miles the day before only to cut loose less than ten miles into he third day. Now what do I do? At that point I looked down the busy highway. There was no sign of a hand brake drum. To hell with it, I thought. A quick peek under the Rover confirmed I wasn’t prone to loosing more parts, or more prone than usual at least. So I hopped back in the truck and drove to Vermont. The last day of driving went smoothly; in fact it turns out that my truck is more fuel-efficient in front wheel drive. On the way home I resolved my electrical issues. The extreme heat had causes my battery's water to evaporate. After opening the battery ports and pouring distilled water in, the gauge started to read normally again. My Defender 110 had made it home against all odds. All in all it was kind of fun, but I hope not to have any more excitement of this nature for some time. I would later discover the fill plug of the diff. was missing, that’ll do it. My dad ask the pertinent question “how did you forget to put the fill plug in?” What?! Ughhhhh, I took it to a chain before I left SLC. Looking back I should have realized that the oily mess on the trailer was not from the construction as I had theorized, but the diff. as oil splashed out of the fill plug hole. I had ignored the possibility that the oil was coming from my truck, as it was not spotting when parked, bad assumption. Either way, I learned a valuable lesson: Do not take your truck to [legally I can not disclose the companies name, due to the settlement with their insurance company, which assumed liability and payed for my replacement parts]. If you’re on a road trip and must take it to a service center, double check their work. On the bright side, now I know, and as the great G.I. Joe said, “knowing is half the battle!” _______ ________ 39

Running with Women Story by: Diana Fisher Photos courtesy of Pamela Petroff & P.C.R.C
[Diana Fisher couldn’t wait for her second year in Oregon offroading. Here’s her report –ed.] I bought my ’98 Discovery II new in Denver, CO and belonged to a Rover Club there. Although I went out with the dealership crew more than with the club, I felt like I had a fair amount of “off-road” experience on the old mining trails of the Colorado Rockies. I must say, until I moved to Oregon, I had only been on one run with another woman driver! She was 82 and walked with a cane, but she could drive her Range Rover with no problems and she and I were able to drive all of Pearl Pass outside of Aspen in our Rovers unassisted (as in did not have to be towed or winched)! Then I moved to Oregon. I was delighted to find out that not only were there women drivers, but there was even a Women’s run! I went on one two years ago, when Steve Schoenfelder, from Warn, gave a winching lesson and I discovered there was a multitude of women Rover drivers and that the “off-roading” in Oregon could be quite challenging! Scouting for the Women’s Run Pamela Petroff sent out a message asking if anyone was interested in going with her on her scouting run to drive the trails for the Spring Women’s Run, to be held April 7. Each spring for the last seven years Pamela has organized an off road event for the women drivers in the Pacific Coast Rover Club. She said that this year’s scouting shouldn’t be anything too difficult. Right! As we all know, it had been raining since November 1st of last year and although the prediction was for a clear day, it was raining. Two cars were on the scouting run: Doug Shipman’s hybrid Series, with Pamela as shotgun/navigator and my stock Discovery, with a friend, Dennis Christen as shotgun. We were supposed to drive Roger’s Road, but it was temporarily closed so we headed further 48
west and started with Jeep Trail. It had been a rough winter in the Tillamook Forest and there was a multitude of downed trees. Someone had run the trail and had cut sections out of the logs that were blocking the trail leaving a gap wide enough for an ATV. Our first obstacle was just such a log that Doug winched off the road. No big deal. We encountered several logs of this type and either nudged or pushed or pulled each just enough to allow our Rovers to pass. Then we found the big obstruction. Two large tree stumps had washed down a hillside and onto the trail. A live tree stood to the left of the trail and a huge old growth stump landed to the right, with the trees falling across the trail. An opening had been sawed through that was actually wide enough to permit a Rover to pass with about an inch to spare, IF only the large stump was not blocking the opening. It would take more than a tug or a nudge to move this obstacle. Doug and Pamela rigged a snatch block that would pull the stump away from the sawed opening. It took three sets of the rigging and winching to move the massive tree trunk. Quite impressive! During the winching we kept well out of harm’s way. Pamela was standing just uphill from me and leaned on a dead tree for balance, which immediately broke off at the ground and toppled in my direction. We both screamed and then laughed; the environment is indeed fragile. I suggested to Pamela that the obstacle we had just driven through is too narrow to bring a string of cars through; otherwise, Jeep Trail is just plain fun! She just smiled! After the Jeep Trail, we ran a few others: Zig Zag and Fire Fox. By the end of Fire Fox, I’m tired, I’m ready to go home and I’ve escaped without body damage. We started back to the main road. Instead of staying on the highway, Doug turns off and starts up Roger’s Road (it was closed at the top, but not at the bottom so we decided to scout it). Dennis said just to tell them that I’m not going
on, but I decide to go anyway. About halfway up we come to a wet, muddy switchback which Doug in his armored tank, has trouble navigating. I decide I’m not going to try it. Dennis said he would go up and tell them that I’m turning around. After talking to them a few minutes, Doug came back and said that I wouldn’t want to turn around here and to go ahead and try it and if I can’t make it he will winch me through it. (He said that if you’ve never been winched you’ve never really off-roaded.) Within moments, I have slammed sideways into the embankment and indeed Doug winches me out. (I guess now I’ve really off-roaded! Ha!) It dawned on me later that Dennis didn’t even tell them I wasn’t going to go on. I ask him about it and he muttered a very quiet “no.” The Spring Women’s Run – April 7th Again, the prediction was for a clear day, but alas, the day started with a drizzle. We had 8 vehicles with at least one woman driver each, ranging in age from 15 to 60-something. My car contained the 60-somethings: my friend, Char White, who went on the Rover All Over Rally with me and loved it; and my friend, Janie Birdsong, who had never been off-roading. In fact, Janie was vacillating because she was supposed to be cooking Easter dinner for her family the next day and needed to prepare, but when her son heard her potential plans, he said by all means go, so she did. We had a mix of Range Rovers, Discoverys and, of course, Lil Red, Pamela’s late Series II-A. This group of able bodied (and vehicled) women headed out for the trails. Even in the rain, it was a day of fun for all. The heavy precipitation held off for the morning. When we came to the “tree stump obstacle” Doug expertly spotted each vehicle through the narrow space. We had 8 unharmed vehicles successfully navigate the challenge. At the lunch stop, of course, the heavens opened. After lunch I thought we were probably finished for the day, Char commented that the Lil Red, the lead vehicle, was going up a mud trail. I said that I thought that she was just turning around. Low and behold, she was going up the trail! Although Pamela had no trouble negotiating the terrain, the second vehicle barely rounded the first switchback and the third couldn’t make it up the slick, muddy slope. By word of mouth (I don’t have the right radio so I just hear gossip) we heard that the vehicle behind Pamela was also stuck. After some discussion, it was decided that too much damage would be done to the trail if we pursued this track, so we all got good practice backing down the muddy hillside. From there, Pamela led us to the Fire Fox trail. Total fun! Hill, muddy, rocky, tree rooty enough to be quite challenging, but not treacherous enough to wound anyone’s pride. Our day concluded at the Apolloni Vineyards where we drew for goodies from our sponsors, Rovers North, Land Rover Portland and the Hillsboro Police Department while sharing appetizers, tasting the great wines and chatting about our experiences! All of us drivers want to thank the guys that rode along and helped spot and were great passengers! Thanks to Doug, Pamela and our sponsors for their efforts and support! _______ _______ 49
You Say It’s Your Birthday? Story by: Pamela Petroff Photos courtesy of Pamela Petroff & P.C.R.C
[Pamela Petroff, Portland, OR, has entertained Rovers North News readers for several years with reports from the Pacific Northwest. Here’s her latest excuse to jump in her Land Rover –ed.] Like any normal person suffering from the commonly known Land Rover addiction, the email from Christine Bach asking a small group of PCRC (Pacific Coast Rover Club) members to take her husband, Mike, out off roading on his 30th birthday was nothing more than a welcome opportunity to get out in the forest and run some trails. It seems she was deviously planning a surprise party for him and needed him out of the house for the day, returning no earlier than 5 PM. Her most cunning moment came when she explained that the “day of off roading” with pals from the club was his birthday present from her. We met at the Log Cabin Restaurant early on Saturday, May 5. The outing was being lead by off-road maestro Doug Shipman. That in itself always makes for an interesting day. We had an exciting crew. Doug was
50
driving his blue hybrid Series truck with a 3.9 liter engine. There were 3 Range Rovers, one being Mike’s, with varying degrees of modification, a Discovery with a slight lift, my stock Late Series II-A (Lil Red), and a Jeep Rubicon (!), driven by a former Land Rover owner. In addition to keeping Mike occupied and out of the house, the assigned task was to scout a route which Doug contemplated using as leader of the “ Jolly Jeepers Back to Basics Rally.” We would be running trails and roads on the north side of Highway 6 in the Tillamook State Forest OHV Area. (www.oregon.gov/ODF/tsf.shtml) The route would be from the top of Triangulation Peak to the top of Pinnacle Peak. We had great expectations for the day. The prediction was for clear and sunny skies, but this is Oregon, after all. We were met with overcast skies interspersed with occasional bright spots. The sun didn’t come out until we were about to head for home. The trails were still recovering from a hard winter. Conditions were generally pretty good, not dry, but not too muddy. We started up to Triangulation Peak taking some interesting trails and roads, but without incident. Each truck took its turn ascending the steep rocky track to the very top of the peak itself, my little Series truck included. Following the narrow road down from the peak, we hit a nice drift of snow covering a section of the road. Doug ploughed through first, making repeated attempts until he broke a nice straight trail all the way through. Everyone followed nicely with only one truck completely loosing traction and having to be strapped out of the drift. The road from the top ends in a small junction with the route down to the highway continuing to the right. Straight ahead through the junction another trail ascends steeply into the woods. The visible section of the trail looked fine and Doug forged ahead. Each truck followed in turn, leaving adequate space between vehicles. Being in a Series truck, leaving a significant space between me and the truck in front of me is critical on an uphill trail. I have to be able to guarantee my momentum, as stopping on a steep ascent may mean backing all the way down to try again. All went well, pretty much a normal trail with bumps and rocks, until we reached a section of the trail hidden by the trees.
The full impact of a winter of hard rain, snow and wind was readily apparent. Although there were no trees directly across or blocking the trail, there were substantial limbs and branches and debris from several fallen fir trees piled up at least a couple of feet deep on the trail. It was a tough go, but we all made it through. More than one driver had to stop at the top of the trail to remove tree branches (big tree branches!), which were stuck in the undercarriage of his truck and protruding out the side or back. The next trail on the route was another fun challenge. The beginning section was a nice ascent to a very rocky groove filled with large rocks and small boulders. Some trucks made it through unassisted. Lil Red was not among them; I winched up the last 20 or so feet. Mike was immediately behind me. He came up into the groove, traversed a large rock and came down hard on the rear undercarriage bending the rear control rod pretty badly. With a bend in the control rod, the wheel was not correctly positioned in the center of the wheel well, but was canted forward and was pushed into and rubbing on the passenger door frame. A halt in forward progress was called and Mike’s truck was winched the remaining distance to the top of the groove. The rear passenger door was opened and the front part of the wheel well was bent out to prevent continued rubbing and the eventual cutting of the tire. It was decided that the load on that side, the passenger side, of Mike’s truck would be lightened by farming out his passengers to other vehicles and we would continue to the end of the trail, which was very close. Upon exiting the trail to a large clearing it was time to take a break for lunch and a field repair. Mike removed the control rod and several novel steps were taken to straighten it, at least enough so he could replace the part, get out of the forest and drive home. The initial straightening was done by inserting the control rod in the PTO opening in the bumper of Doug’s truck and applying leverage. The second, and more sophisticated straightening, was done by strategically placing the control rod on the ground and having Doug drive over it. Amazingly enough, it worked! While the rest of us ate, Mike replaced the somewhat straightened rod and we were on our way. The final trail of the day was up to the top of Pinnacle Peak. The beginning of the trail was a maze of wet tree roots, small stumps, wet slippery decaying wood and debris from newly fallen trees. All but the Jeep had to winch through this first part (it had lockers). Mike and one other truck decided to go around this trail and to meet us on the other side of the peak. With a weakened control rod, Mike did not want to push his birthday luck any further. Once through the first section we had to deal with our first downed tree blocking a trail. Doug pulled out his chain saw and cut up the tree as we dutifully pushed, pulled, carried or threw the sawed pieces off to the side. As we proceeded up the trail, this drill was repeated at least a half a dozen times. The trail was
fantastic: narrow and winding with beautiful vistas off to the left as it followed the ridgeline to the peak. From time to time, the trial was lined with white birch trees leaving narrow passage for the trucks. The Range Rovers and the Discovery came out of these sections with white bark marks smeared on their rear quarter-panels. It was great fun to drive! With all the stopping to remove the obstructing trees, it took a good deal of time to reach the peak. One obstruction consisted of several trees, varying from 12” to 20” in diameter. The final obstruction was a whopper! It was a huge tree that had to be two feet or more in diameter. Doug sawed through the trunk, then carefully cut away its supporting branches so we could roll it off to the side, while trying to keep it from rolling directly down hill into our trucks. At last, we made it to the top. The trail opened onto a small grassy plateau. The sun was trying to break through the clouds (as tiny ice pellets fell from the clouds directly overhead). We could see the canyons and ravines below us. Doug said that on a clear day you can see the breakers on the beach to the west, Mount Hood to the east and Mount Rainier to the north. We could only see the canyons and ravines, but that was enough. It was beautiful. Ran Freudlich volunteered to drive his Disco down the trail and pick up those who had opted to drive around the trail, so they too could enjoy the view. We spent a very nice piece of time relaxing, chatting, enjoying the view and knowing full well these moments are one of the reasons we love our Rovers so much. After a time, we climbed back into our trucks and followed the steep down hill trail that lead from the plateau. Shortly, we were on gravel road heading for the highway. We all headed back to Portland, at varying speeds, of course. Mike made it home safely, but before he could even tell Christine about his trials and tribulations, he was led into a house full of waiting guests! The trail buddies headed home to clean up, then drove on to Mike’s house to join the celebration. Not a bad birthday after all! _______ _______

DUNING IT IN MOROCCO Story & Photos By Robbie Basaras
[Robbie Basaras is a 27-year old electrician from South Woodham Ferrers, outside of Chelmsford, in England. He loved “taking things apart as a child” which led to a fondness for Land Rover and Triumph automobiles. He shares an adventuresome side with his girlfriend, Rachel, a schoolteacher. Here’s their adventure –ed.] Among the great aspects of living in the United Kingdom is the fact we have so many different countries, diverse cultures and better weather pretty much on our doorstep. For example, within an hour and a half I can arrive in a foreign country complete with all my camping equipment and SWB Defender. The 30 minute crossing by train underneath the English Channel opens up the gateway into France. 52
Too close? OK, take a 12 hour drive south and you’re in Spain. Too common (after all, most of us Brits take our holidays there)? How about a few hours drive east into Belgium or Germany? The list goes on and on. One half hour crossing and you’ll find a road to anywhere in Europe, Asia or if you take an incredibly long drive to avoid another sea crossing, into Africa. Naturally this got me thinking. I have a Land Rover which can take me anywhere I want and a saintly girlfriend who wants an exciting holiday. How about a driving/camping holiday somewhere hot? I trawled the internet and various magazines to get all the info I needed and booked Rachel and I on an adventure trip to Morocco. The vehicle that would make this possible is my 2005 SWB Defender with only 14,000 miles on the odometer.
To live out of a SWB Defender for two weeks took a surprising amount of planning. I used my tried and tested approach of “access anything at any time.” This meant removal of the back seats and building a false wooden floor in the back. I also constructed two full length drawers which were only accessible when the back door is open; hopefully, this would deter opportunistic thieves as anything worth any money (camcorder, mobile phones, etc.) would be out of sight and out of reach. It also gave me two levels from which to store items aiding the “access anything at any time” focus. Now I had to decide where everything would go. My Defender’s modest mileage enabled me to forgo serious spares such as half shafts or a spare clutch. I did pack take filters, a few oil seals, all fluids and some fuses and bulbs. I had bought a twin hob and grill gas cooker which I mounted on the back door. An Engle Fridge/freezer took care of the important stuff like the beer, and two five gallon containers held the drinking water which was pumped by a screen washer pump through a flexible tube to wherever it was needed. A Hannibal roof rack and roof tent provided accommodation, keeping the back of the Landy clear of the clutter caused by sleeping bags and tents! From underbody protection and safety I installed Mantec steering guard, safari snorkel, front differential guard and JATE rings. I bought a bottle jack (nice and small) and a dandy all-in-one tyre repair kit, including bead breaker, tyre pliers, a rasp and patches- quite comprehensive for it’s overall size. Two tool/ storage boxes adorned the back of the roof rack, separated by two 2 gallon Jerry cans. The one “must have” for the trip had to be the CB radio. Without the radio I would of missed out on so much banter and have become seriously lost when I got separated from the convoy in one of the cities in Morocco. The journey started by ferry from Portsmouth in the south of England to Bilbao on the north coast of Spain. We took a two day drive through Spain to the south coast via a place called Saint Helena; we were halfway there. We could have driven the length of Spain in a day but as part of our convoy we had a 1974 Series III 88” soft top which was only happy at 50-55 mph. The next stage was a one hour crossing from Algeciras to Ceuta, part of Spanish Morocco and then onto the time warp known as the Moroccan Border Control, which consisted of one guy in a room behind an open window with metal bars whose sole job was to stamp papers and shout a lot. Morocco is situated off the south coast of Spain and along with Algeria is Africa’s most northern country. Similar to Spain its greenest parts are up north and the more desert-like areas are in the south. It is home to major cities such as Marrakech and Fez and also houses a huge expanse of sand known as the Erg Chebbi dunes. This covers a 5 x 26 mile area and is one of the highlights of the trip when you
get to go dune bashing! Empty the contents of your vehicle and leave them at base camp, pull the fuse on the ABS and Traction control, drop the tyre pressures to around 12psi, strap anything down which is likely to fly about, select low box 2nd or 3rd and drive it like you stole it! The reason for disconnecting the ABS and Traction Control is that although it’s a godsend on wet grass and slippery surfaces it can get you well and truly stuck in soft sand. As one tyre spins and digs down, the Traction Control applies the brake to that wheel transferring the torque to the other three and spinning the next one and so on. You basically end up digging yourself a hole. The best way is to drive on sands is minus TC, ABS and leaving the difflock out! The reason being that if you get stuck you still have one card left to play. Get stuck, difflock in, reverse out. If you get stuck with difflock in you got nothing bar a radio to get help! The only way I could describe driving two tonnes of Land Rover running 12psi on soft sand is like driving on air and within a couple of hours your confidence grows to almost dangerous levels. This confidence caused me to overtake a bogged down ‘96 110 Defender, nail the throttle up a very steep dune and come very close to standing her on her nose on the way down. Luckily I kept away from the brake and stamped on the throttle which stopped the front tyres digging in and putting us on our roof. The only casualty was Rachel’s knees; she slipped forwards when, for a brief moment the Land Rover was vertical and she bashed her knees on the Defenders “afterthought” air con system. This was for me the only scary moment and one never to repeat. Driving a rolled Defender 1,500miles home would kinda ruin the Holiday! For my one scary moment, Rachel had several, from scary toilets to scary spiders, but the worst for her was without a doubt the mountain twisties! For those of you that have never driven a Td5 - powered Defender, think of it as a diesel equivalent to a V-8 but with twice the MPG. With equivalent power and torque it enables the usual walking pace off roading but also lets you nail the throttle, change up all five gears and throw it around like a sort of two ton sports car! I’ve lost count of the amount of times I have out accelerated unsuspecting individuals at the lights. Not because I’m quicker, it’s because they didn’t expect an “old” landRover to smoke it’s tyres, drop it’s ass and go like a scolded two ton cat! This made the twisties down the mountain, bags of fun. Well it did for me; Rachel went quiet and rather pale! We drove for ten days and up to 10 hours daily, covering between 130 and 180 miles of off road driving along boulder strewn tracks. We even drove about 50 miles of the Paris Dakar rally route. Each night we stopped to set up camp, get a brew going and cook dinner. Once I’d relaxed enough I gave the Landy a thorough going-over, checking wheel and propshaft bolts, hoses, belts and cleaning out that damn air filter again! I fitted a safari raised air intake to 53
minimise the amount of dust going through the air filter. This only works however if you are the convoy leader. However, I was not therefore my engine inhaled most of the Sahara desert through its K&N oil impregnated filter turning the dust into a kind of muddy cement. When the Landy started sooting heavily, I needed to improvise so an oil soaked sock was stretched over the opening of the snorkel to act like a crude pre-cleaner. The Engel fridge freezer worked fabulously. We were sitting in the middle of the western Sahara watching a mid 1980’s Defender 90 floundering at the bottom of a dune (mud tyres and sand don’t mix) when we decided to have a drink. The bottle of Evian I pulled out of the fridge had started to freeze, even though the fridge was set to “cool.” The temperature inside the car must have been around 32 degrees centigrade because we’d had the doors open and aircon off, impressive stuff! Wish it was a beer though!, Morocco, being a largely Muslim country, frowns upon alcohol. That’s not to say it isn’t available, it’s just rarer than it is over here. One guy who was working at a bar wouldn’t even touch a bottle of wine, I had to walk behind the bar, take it off the shelf, open it and pour it myself. Just a shame I had to pay for it! It was a complete culture shock. Similarly, how many times to you see a policeman stop locals using a gas station to allow a convoy of Land Rovers to fill up unhindered? One poor fellow who ignored the policeman’s instructions was consequently back slapped across the face and told politely to get to the back of the queue. The policeman looked at me and smiled. He seemed quite proud of his power over the locals. Either that or he wanted to run off with Rachel! Once we’d been through the Erg Chebbi dunes we drove on to fez, the roads becoming more civilised by the mile. This time we opted for the five-star hotel rather than the roof tent. The rest of the convoy was glad of a bath, mod cons and a pool. I was restless, I needed to get back behind the wheel. Even when I was in bed I had the drone of the gearbox and slightly offbeat thrum of the turbocharged five cylinder diesel ringing in my head. It just seemed more relaxing being behind the wheel with hundreds of miles yet to cover. Lounging by the pool seemed wrong, I was wasting time. Nobody else thought this though! Once we’d returned to the north coast of Morocco, endured the boredom and chaos of the Moroccan Border Control and started Orders: (800) 403-7591 website: www.roversnorth.com
heading on the ferry back to Spain it became all too apparent that the exciting part of the trip was coming to an end - even though we still had around a thousand miles to go. This is usually the tedious part of any journey but hey I still had the fun of attempting to get my Landy out of the tightly packed ferry! As the ferry docked into Algeciras it dawned on me I could now go into virtually any shop and buy as much beer as I wanted and as a consequence things seemed rosy again. How wrong could I be! I had just unfolded my roof tent, was on my way down and placed my right foot on apparently “firm ground.” Unfortunately for me it was the crest of a small rut left by a previous camper. When I took my left foot off the last rung of the Landy’s ladder my right foot gave way. I heard it and damn did I feel it. I couldn’t believe it. I had all that way to go on my own as the next day I was driving my girlfriend to Malaga airport so she could get back home for work on Monday and I‘d just broken my ankle! I managed to get to the airport dosed up on pain killers, I dropped Rachel off, waved goodbye and headed north through Spain on my own to Saint Helena to meet the rest of the convoy. For some reason we’d miscalculated our funds and I ended up trying to get home on 88 Euros. The first tankful cost 44 Euros and I was still a few hundred miles from Saint Helena. That was pretty scary because my cell phone was out of credit and the remaining cash was now reserved for diesel. I managed to meet the rest of the crew just as the fuel light came on. Apart from that, the rest of the journey went without hitch. The Land Rover performed impeccably and it was only when I pulled up on my driveway I could tell people how reliable it had been after all, it would have been foolish to say so, so far from home! Since my trip through Spain and Morocco I had my Defender’s ECU re-programmed. Her power has gone up from 122bhp to 170bhp (yes 170bhp!!) and the most impressive bit is the 265lb/ft torque available from 1900rpm. She idles in fourth gear high box chugging along at about 12mph and will do 100mph flat out but unfortunately due to the relatively low gearing she runs out of revs. I reckon with the right gearing she’ll do 120mph. Not bad for a two ton brick!! Would I return to Morocco for another holiday? Yes, indeed, but this time I would watch my step upon returning to Algeciras. _______ _______ 54

SIGHTINGS Ah, those lazy hazy crazy days of summer, when millions of Americans enjoy vacation while the Sightings editor labors over bags of mail. The large number of Sightings indicates the impact of this small but significant manufacturer of motor cars. The very presence of Land Rovers makes the most mundane product, movie or television program seem extraordinary. This issue Sightings has engaged the assistance of an international staff. Unlike Presidents Bush and Putin, who seem not to be able to get along right now, I received spectacular assistance from three Russians friends working here in Maine this summer: Natalia Morozova and Sergey Kholopov, both from Magnitogorsk and Ekaterina Lesnik, from Vladivostok The very best of the Sightings earn a coveted Rovers North coffee mug. To assure fairness we use the following rules. It never hurts for novice and expert Sighters to review them:. Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in a distinctive way. Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won't surprise us, either, and you won't get a mug. We're delighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. You shouldn't be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways to get a coffee mug. Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication we close off the Sightings. If we've mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we won't mention it again. If you're new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Rule #4 - We're not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, please remember - one mug per Sighting per issue. Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits. Rule #6 - Psst... if we can't read you name and address because of atrocious penmanship, we can't recognize your Sighting nor send you a mug. Psst...E-mail submissions - remember we can't 62
send a mug by e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might make an error. Let me know if you think you've been jobbed, but all decisions of the Editor are final. Land Rovers appear everywhere from cyberspace to print. Heather Wise, Bucyrus, KS, found a t-shirt design called “Rhinos Hunt in Packs,” which sure looks like it includes a Defender to her. Tad Hykema [no address] notes that an Andy Capp cartoon featured Land Rovers in one strip. Nels Anderson, Framingham, MA, was featured in an article in PC Pilot. For the photo shoot, he made it a point to include his coffee mug. Four Wheeler magazine of June 2007 ran a feature on the Cape Cod National Seashore Park with lots of photos of “vintage trucks,” including the Series II-A 88” and 109” military of Jon and Laurie Detwiler, Norwell, MA. Their Rovers “hauled three kids and fishing gear seven miles down Nauset Beach to their personal paradise. We thought that they were lost and somehow motored across the Atlantic from England.” It was great to see classic Land Rovers recognized in an American four wheel drive magazine. Jon also spotted a Series III Military Lightweight in the St. Croix Fishing Rod catalogue.
David Dallas, Cincinnati, OH, sent in a Sighting from his local Time Warner homepage for General Auto Insurance. It features a topless Series Land Rover, “which you can recognize from the rear body capping.” David Kessler, Worthington, OH, found a Discovery used in a Penn and Teller video about Revolutionary War reenactments. Insurance can seem like a dull business unless you include a talking duck or a Land Rover. When Farmers Insurance put a Defender Station Wagon in its television ad campaign, Sighters around the country paid attention: Matt Welton, Muir, MI, Brian Ross, Cold Spring, KY, Sam Porter, Westminster, MD, Kris Pacinelli, Paola, KS, D. Aaron Conway, St. Louis Park, MN, Karen Padgett, Lafayette, GA, William Ellis, Tallahassee, FL, Adrian Borunda, San Antonio, TX, Ben Sands, Bandera, TX, Scott Maurer, Florence, OR and Kim Nichols, Kennesaw, GA. Paul Dandini, and Len Cater, see Rule # 6. We’d love to send you mugs! Martin Tulip, Snoqualmie, WA, also spotted a II-A in an American Family Insurance television ad. Snapple Red Tea must feel that Land Rovers improve the flavor. Robert Williams, Iowa City, IA should have been working on his graduate school thesis when he found the ad for Snapple
on a WeatherUnderground web site. Dan Corinda [no address] found it on the Snapple web site. Adrian Borunda, San Antonio, TX, Ben Sands, Bandera, TX, Kim Nichols, Kennesaw, GA, Fred Behrens, Powhatan, VA, Brian Ross, Cold Spring, KY, Scott Corey, Tallahassee, FL, Greg Fitzgerald, Warren, NJ, Ronnie Massey, Franklin, NC, Nick Pistolakis, Point Pleasant, NJ, and Sherry Block, Hadlyme, CT. Jacob Wilbert and Pam Nelson, please see Rule #6. Television commercials, particularly the dodgy ones, rely on Land Rovers to perk up sales. Uncertain that their sunglasses would excite viewers, Foster Grant placed their model in a white Defender 90. As Sherry Block, Hadlyme, CT, wrote, “of course they were saying that Foster Grants were cool but who noticed them? I noticed them because I LOVE my white D-90!” Stephen Johnson, Johns Island, SC, Kim Nichols, Kennesaw, GA, Adrian Borunda, San Antonio, TX, Ben Sands, Bandera, TX, and Greg Hollingsworth, Colchester, CT, also saw the ad. Tanqueray Gin is a personal favorite and they have a niche brand called Rangpur. What better way to elicit the vision of the olde Empire than the inclusion of a 109”? Richard Everitt, Jackson, MS and Ryan Smyth, Montclair, NJ spotted the ad, which can also be viewed at www.globeprobe.com. Andrew Gold [no address] saw the Taco Bell ad mentioned in earlier issues; Kim Nichols, Kennesaw, GA, watched an ad for Emerson also featured in the past. Catalogues have long sought any excuse to put a Land Rover in the picture. We’ve noted the presence of Land Rovers in Willis and Geiger catalogues before; Jay Gerish, Fairfield, NJ, found a Series III in a 1997 issue. Bernard McMahon, Washington, DC, found a Defender 110 on safari in the J.L. Powell Clothing catalogue. Sahalie, a clothing and leisure equipment company mentioned in our last issue, features a Series II-A 88” SW, so notes Kevin Kotula, Del Rio, TX. Self-professed “Rover nerd” Garrick Cook, Fort Wayne, IN, spotted the rear tire carrier of a Discovery Series II for a moment in Spiderman 3. Watching a Fox News story on spring snows in South Africa, Fred Behrens, Pohatan, VA, saw a Rover “merrily plowing through the snow.” When Outside Magazine needed a drawing to represent the concept of “road trip,” they chose a Defender 110, according to Douglas Dietsche, McKinney, TX and Brandon Halstead, Alexandria, VA. When Gourmet Magazine needed a swank backdrop of an article, it chose to include a current Range Rover, notes Bill Webb, Monon, IN. Men’s Journal ran a feature story on Africa’s Cape Verde islands and, of course, included a Series III 109”, notes Joseph Weijerstrass, Bloomfield, CT. QST is the magazine of the ham radio fraternity. Douglas Dietsche, McKinney, TX, noted that when Yaesu radios need to advertise “the hottest field gear anywhere,” they used a
Camel colored Defender 110 for the background shot. Nels Anderson, Framingham, MA, saw the same ad. When the Cincinnati Zoo ran a fund raiser for their Zoofari 2007 Arctic Expedition, the prize was a Range Rover, reports Brian Ross, Cold Spring, KY. The British firm Dunhill uses a Defender in a safari setting to promote its new Pursuit cologne, reports Larry Simpson, Belle Plaine, KS. Bill Kendall, Centreville, VA watched an ABC News broadcast with Charles Gibson. In a plug for their “Green Living” series, they chose to include a Series III as an example of that lifestyle. Matt Chelf, Wooster, OH, spotted a Range Rover Classic LWB in an episode of Lost, which we’ve featured in an earlier issue. Matthew Tornetta [no address] spotted the same Rover in the same episode. Heather Wise, Bucyrus, KS, spotted host Michael Chiarello in his green Defender 90 on his “Easy Entertaining.” Adding a D 90 to the recipe certainly makes me more interested in the food! Kim Nichols, Kennesaw, GA, watched a CNN International report with two Discoverys on dirt roads in Tibet. Dick Newton, Charlestown, RI, spotted Land Rovers in commercials during Grey’s Anatomy, but he’s uncertain of the ads themselves. As per Rule #7, the Editor occasionally blows a call. Frank Coats, Yuba City, CA, wrote to inform me of my flawed judgment in ruling “The Queen” ineligible for a mug. Indeed, Her Highness does ride about in Land Rovers, and that is no surprise. However, in the movie, her character drives her Defender into a stream, stops halfway, inspects the front end, and announces to the staff that she has broken a front propshaft. In real life, the Queen does drive her own Defender 110 and, according to Mr. Coats, “is familiar with the maintenance of four-wheel drive vehicles. For providing this additional information, we are awarding Mr. Coats [owner of “an almost roadworthy Series II 88” and a far from roadworthy Series I 86”] a mug. _______ ________
