Happy Trails to You Story & Photos by Jim Edson
[Jim Edson, Irving, TX, entered the Land Rover world with a rare ’95 Discovery manual transmission. Once hooked, he upgraded to a 2004 G4 Discovery. He’s a past president of the Texas Rovers and now serves as the webmaster of their site, www.texasrovers.org. Here’s his story on the 2008 South Central Texas Rally –ed.] Five years ago, the late Ross Mabey and fellow Texas Rovers Club members (texasrovers.org) started an annual event for Rover enthusiasts in the Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas area. Each year, it’s been hosted at Barnwell Mountain, located in northeastern Texas (Four Wheeler Magazine listed it as one of the 101 places to wheel before you die). Each year, it has grown; this year, with over 150 participants and great sponsors, Texas Rovers rented the entire park for the nearly 100 Land Rovers. The vehicles ranged from a 1962 Series II to a 2008 Range Rover Sport – but the majority of trucks were Discoverys. Participants came from locales as far apart as British Columbia and Argentina; one driver even flew in from Sheffield, England. As one out of town visitor put in a post on his web site “I had a great time- much more fun that the vast majority of off-road events I’ve been to in the last 16 or so years I’ve been doing it.” The weekend started on a Thursday with Land Rover enthusiasts waiting outside the gate to check-in. After setting up camp, they had a chance to do some trail runs and familiarize themselves with Barnwell Mountain. Those not so adventurous met for guided trail 10
runs at the pavilion. One group of an adventurous nature went over to test out a trail named Twister, a nasty, washed-out ravine that challenges even the best prepared of vehicles. Dan Chapman managed to give his ‘97 Disco a bit of a ‘beauty mark’ on a tougher part of the trail. After dinner, everyone met at Camp Mabey for an informal Meet ‘n Greet. Those brave enough soon headed out under a clear sky and full moon for night runs. After a roaring campfire and libations back at camp everyone turned in for the night. With flashes of lightning and crashes of thunder, the skies opened up and dumped buckets of water on the sleeping campers. Gale force winds whipped tents but, like Land Rovers, their owners can survive most every thing. The rain turned out to be a blessing. It created mud puddles for those who like to spend weeks cleaning Rovers. For the rest of us, it settled the dust and cooled the air. To the joy of all, Mike Law took over coordinating all the children’s activities. He put together many fun things for the kids to do. The most popular was the painting of tire tracks on their bright yellow SCARR shirts. This turned out to be such a super hit that even some of the adults had their shirts painted with tread marks. Even a Series II ended up with tread marks up one wing. Mike also put together a scavenger hunt with lots of items for the little ones to search for during the weekend and awarded prizes after the main raffle on Saturday night. According to the children in attendance this was the best SCARR yet.
Friday morning everyone met for more fun in the sun and organized trail runs. The “easy trail” group headed out led by Darrell Oliver, with yours truly as “Tail Gunner” in the rear. Within 100 yards of pulling off the main road Anne Lockley was on the CB saying her Range Rover had severe rear tire rub. Apparently on her way here from Canada, she had some tire work done. The person must have used her trailing arms as jack points, bending both of them in the process. She would return later in the day thanks to the efforts of other enthusiasts willing to bend someone else’s suspension parts. The remainder of the group had done this run earlier and felt like old pros. So when Darrell asked if any one wanted to try some mud, they all said yes. So we cut over to “We Show,” normally an easy trail. After folding in their mirrors to squeeze their Rovers between the trees and sharp corners, the convoy quickly came to a halt. Darrell had gotten stuck in his mud hole. To make matters worse the opposite bank was higher than his bumper. The riverbank clay was slick with water from the previous evening’s rainstorms. Out came the winches. The rest of the group took the main trail around in time to watch all the winching action. One LR3 received minor cosmetic damage to the passenger rear door. When they got back to the main pavilion, Anne’s Rangie was ready to join us again. The Timed Run, a surprise hit at SCARR ’07, returned to the delight of participants. Making the run more challenging was the fact that the blindfolded driver had to respond to the instructions of his or her navigator. The trees along the side of the course showed the scars of many an aggressive team. One driver from San Antonio hit a tree dead on at what seemed like ‘Warp 7’ speed and did a little bumper realignment in the process. The best time of the day was put up by the team of Tom Griggs navigating with “Moses” behind the wheel of his tricked out Discovery. After all this excitement everyone congregated at the Pavilion for a catered tailgate party & cookout dinner of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, with the extra time to mingle with friends old and new. Any gathering of Land Rovers turns into a show and tell as folks inspect each other’s vehicles and modifications. Just as darkness fell, Mike Law gathered up all the kids for a Flashlight Trail Walk and furnished each with a flashlight donated by one of our sponsors. While Mike led the young folks along dark trails, a group of Rovers headed out for their own fun on the trails. Others gathered around the campfire to tell more tales of the day’s events and to enjoy some liquid refreshments. Saturday morning everyone was a bit slower getting started. But once up and after many hot cups of strong camp coffee, most folks were ready for their daily fix of off-roading. In the line for the inter-
mediate trail group, Scotty Thrope pulls up in his 1962 Series II-A as do Ed and Max Mayle in their ’68 II-A 88”. The trail leader looked at Scotty’s ‘62 wagon and says “I think you are in the wrong line.” Scotty coolly replied, “no I am signed up for the intermediate group,” and he replies, “do you think your truck can make it?” Scotty gives him a confused look and said, “I think so.” He makes it over most obstacles easily until they get to the first long steep hill. Making his first run at the hill, Scott got half-way up and lacked articulation enough for rear tire to drop down and make contact in a deep rut. The loss of traction brought him to a stop. After three tries, Ed gave him a different line that missed the deep rut. Then the Series II-A went flying up across and over the rut heading straight for a large tree. With the wheels cut hard to the left, the Rover missed the tree by one inch. Scotty and the 1962 Land Rover wagon cleared the top to a cheering crowd of well-wishers, demonstrating to everyone what off-roading skill is all about. Before a great BBQ dinner of brisket, sausage, potato salad, and homemade cobbler with ice cream, the obligatory group photo was taken. After dinner the raffle was held, and many folks headed home with great prizes, including an air tank, springs, roof rack, light bar, high lift tool set, and more provided by great sponsors like Rovers North. After some night runs, folks gathered at the Camp Mabey pavilion for an exciting slide show by German de Codova. He is traveling in a kitted out Defender 110 from Argentina to Alaska. Sunday, still excited about the event but tired, we said our good byes and headed our separate ways until SCARR ‘09. _______ ________

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Mark, On behalf of Texas Rovers, I would like to sincerely thank you for Rovers North’s generous donation of gift certificates, shirts, caps, etc., for SCARR ’08. As a Platinum Sponsor, Rovers North was recognized at our Saturday dinner, attended by over 200 enthusiasts from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Virginia, Missouri, Louisiana, Argentina and England. The event attracted 100 registered Land Rovers: an LR2, several LR3’s, Range Rover Sports, Disco I and II’s, Range Rovers, Defender 90’s and 110’s, and several Series vehicles. Your contribution helped make our off road event and raffle a big success and your magazine was inserted into each registration packet. Your website has been added to our outstanding sponsor list and is clearly recognized as a preferred vendor by our 400+ registered users. Texas Rovers will start planning SCARR 09 this summer and it is planned to be larger and hopefully more successful next year. We look forward to your continuing participation as a SCARR sponsor for next year. Once again, thank you for your generous contribution. Laura Shacklette SCARR 08 Events Coordinator [Congratulations for the great event. We hope you like the article that appears elsewhere in this issue –ed] Dear Rovers North, Just wanted to say how helpful Les [Parker] is whenever I call with a question about my Land Rover. He always listens as if he has plenty of time to talk, when I know he is actually quite busy. Also, I had a great visit to Rovers North last November. Everyone was very friendly and Les gave me a guided tour of the facility. If you can’t make it to Solihull just go to Rovers North. Todd Miller Fairburn, GA [We love it when enthusiasts stop by on their trips to Vermont. Thanks for taking the time to share your Land Rover experiences with us –ed].
Dear Rovers North, I saw a green Defender 110 Tdi pull up at the Navy Exchange in Pearl Harbor. When I approached the driver, I noticed the car had US Government plates. This Rover is used by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) Hawaii, and apparently, they have quite a few of them that are only driven occasionally. The command plays a big role in monitoring nuclear threats towards the US. Stacy Bowes Honolulu, HI [Perhaps they should have a Rovers North expert, say an Editor, check out their Rovers in, say, February? –ed.] Guys, I have been reading your publication since I was a young man with my ’62 Series II-A. I just came back from a trip in Tanzania and the novelty of all the Rover sightings had almost worn off when I left my hotel in Dar es Salaam to hit an ATM. When I returned 10 minutes later, I encountered a convoy of welloutfitted working Rovers from “One Net, One Life.” What a great sight! Eric Henderson McLean, VA [What a great sight AND a great trip! –ed] Dear Rovers North, Hey, y’all, remember me? Just bought a new toy, an ’89 Range Rover Classic Hunter Edition - my third Classic. I’ve got the bug! Jennifer Drugge Beaufort, SC [We certainly know you from your Sightings. Congratulations on your latest Range Rover Classic. The lightly kitted out Hunter Edition was always a favorite here, a Range Rover closer to the original ‘70’s models –ed.] Gentlemen, I always enjoy your magazine and get a thrill when I’m able to spot a Landie in the press or on TV. Stephen Johnson Johns Island, SC [Thanks for the note; Sightings remains as one of the most popular features of the magazine –ed.]

Story & Photos by Louise Orlando and Andrew Barbour
Born Free Redux Awash in Mauritania -
Part II
[15 years ago, Louise Orlando and Andrew Barbour, Cape Charles, VA, spent a year driving a 1960 Series II Land Rover from London to Cape Town. Their adventures formed the basis of Andrew’s writing the Fodor’s Guide to South Africa. Part I of their adventure ran in our last issue. Here’s Part II –ed.]
“Mines to the left. Mines to the right. Stick to the piste. Bonne chance! With these encouraging words, our Moroccan military escort removed a length of chain that hung across the end of the paved highway and waved our convoy of 23 vehicles into the minefield separating Western Sahara and Mauritania. To reach safety, we would have to traverse 50 kilometers of desert sown with anti-personnel and anti-vehicle mines. Oh, joy. The convoy’s engines roared to life and, one by one, our vehicles rolled off the asphalt into the yellow sand that stretched to the horizon. We had not moved more than 400
20
yards when the convoy ground to a halt. The piste, a French term for a marked route through the desert, had simply disappeared. A huge sand dune, blown there during a recent sandstorm, now stood where the piste should have been. We looked back to ask advice of our Moroccan escorts, only to see the rear of their jeeps as they hurried back to base. The chain had been returned to its position. Abandoned in a giant minefield, our convoy presented an unlikely picture. Our SWB Series II, with its Koenig winch, shovels, sand mats, and high-lift jack, was one of only three vehicles actually equipped for an overland
expedition through Africa. The other vehicles were mainly four-door sedans—Peugeots and Renaults. Young German and French adventurers bought old cars in Europe and drove them to West Africa to be sold at a handsome profit. They carried no equipment whatsoever. When they started their adventure, these Europeans—like us—had planned to cross the Sahara through Algeria. Although no walk in the park, the Algerian route was at least well marked. After Muslim fundamentalists began murdering Western tourists earlier that same month, Algeria closed its borders. The only route left through the Sahara was this one, traversing a minefield between former enemies. We were all out of our depth. Now, in a giant game of Russian roulette, each vehicle left the safety of the piste and inched into uncharted desert, forging its own path through the sand. Soon, vehicles were scattered over a wide swath of desert. And most of them were stuck. Our heavy trailer was proving to be a millstone. Again and again, it bogged down in the sand. To extricate the trailer, we would have to unhitch the Land Rover, turn it around, and then spool out the ½-inch cable from our winch. On its own, our Series II was unstoppable; with the trailer, we struggled. Nevertheless, our progress was excellent compared with the other vehicles in the convoy. When we stopped to extract our trailer for the fifth time, a small Renault driven by two Germans caught up with us. They explained that a large van was stuck and needed our help. We paused. We had just traversed several kilometers of minefield; now we were being asked to go back and do it all again. But what choice did we have? We could hardly leave people in the middle of the Sahara. Leaving our trailer where it had bogged down, we headed back through the desert to a large blue van that had nosed itself into a sand dune. We handed the Italian driver a shovel and indicated that he should dig the sand out from beneath his tires. We wedged our sand mats under the rear tires, and attached the winch. At a signal from us, we engaged the winch while the driver gave his van some gas. Slowly, the van rose from its sandy grave and a cheer went up. As we coiled the winch and stowed the sand mats, we noticed another vehicle, 300 yards away, on top of which stood a man waving a white handkerchief. The Land Rover cavalry was being summoned again. We started the old girl up and rode to the rescue. After that, we were in high demand. To the unprepared Europeans, who had set out on this journey as if they were headed to the supermarket, we were AAA service without the annual fee. So far, none of the vehicles in the convoy had exploded, and we had not seen a mine. We began to wonder if the mines had been removed or, perhaps, had never been there in the first place. With growing confidence, we drove to the next group of vehicles, a quartet of French travelers. They were leaning
nonchalantly on their Peugeot, smoking cigarettes and drinking wine from a shared bottle. The women were wearing lipstick, for God’s sake! We pulled them free. In payment, they offered us a swig of wine from their bottle (um, no thanks). As we prepared to move off, the driver lazily waved his arm to stop us. “Do not goes that way,” he said. “We are seeing several mines zere. The wind is uncovered them.” Sure enough, as the day progressed, more mine-spottings filtered in. One person reported nearly stepping on a mine when he walked behind a dune for a pee. If we ever needed reminding, we now knew this was serious stuff. Our white-hat cavalry charges through the desert started to look downright foolish. Seven hours and countless rescues later, one of the vehicles rediscovered the piste, a surviving section of old colonial stone road that ran straight as an arrow for several kilometers before being swallowed again by the desert. With palpable relief, the convoy regrouped and bumped down the broken stone road. As night fell, we were back in the sand, still some 10 kilometers short of the border. Convoys were not supposed to spend the night in the middle of the minefield, but we had no choice. We wondered if the Mauritanian army would send out a patrol. Yeah, right. The Mauritanian border post was nothing more than a tent, flapping in the wind. The tent’s occupants, two officials wearing aviator sunglasses, were more interested in trying to extract bribes than questioning us about our whereabouts. The destination for our convoy was Nouadibhou, a small fishing port hemmed in by the Sahara on one side and the Atlantic on the other. Not a single road connected this remote outpost to the rest of the country; the nearest town was hundreds of kilometers away. A solitary rail line, served by a weekly train, ran 250 kilometers east from Nouadibhou to Choum, from where a paved road ran to Nouakchott, the Mauritanian capital. After the difficulties of the previous few days, almost all the European travelers decided to load their cars onto the train. Their driving adventure was over. A young Dutch couple in an orange VW Combi was an exception. They desperately wanted to make the desert crossing with us to Nouakchott, 500 kilometers to the south. For reasons of safety, we also didn’t want to attempt this journey alone, and the Combi seemed like a good partner. What’s more, the Dutch carried a GPS system, something of a novelty back in 1994. The first two days were almost a mirror of the minefield crossing, as we attempted to forge our way through deep, deep sand. Again, the trailer was our Achilles’ heel and we got stuck several times. The Combi, whose driver was not terribly skilled, became mired incessantly. Each time, we would pull alongside, hop out, and start digging. The Dutch woman wanted no part of this. Instead, she sat rooted in the Combi, occasionally dispensing salty little coins of Dutch liquorice to the troops outside. We wanted to smack her. 21
With their GPS, the Dutch couple had volunteered to act as the guides. What they failed to tell us is that they didn’t have the detailed maps necessary to make a GPS worthwhile. In fact, they were using the same Michelin maps we were using, maps that covered half of Africa. They couldn’t pinpoint our position any closer than 50 kilometers. For all we knew, we were back in the minefield. Drained by the strain of getting lost and digging out vehicles all day, we decided to pitch camp early. While we were unloading our gear, something in the sand caught our eyes. It was an orange peel. We both walked over to it and dug into the loose sand: There lay some tomato tops and coffee grounds. It was our food from the night before. We had done the classic desert trick: We had spent eight hours driving in a large circle. Relations with the Dutch couple were at a breaking point. We woke to find the Dutch in a state of panic. They had spent the night worrying that they would die in the desert. Over coffee, they suggested that we drive west to find the rail line and then return to Nouadibhou. As the Dutch woman became increasingly shrill, a large truck rumbled out of the desert, belching black smoke. Like survivors on a desert island, the Dutch whipped out their handkerchiefs and started waving and jumping up and down. The truck was overflowing with people and animals. The Dutch man ran up and asked if anyone on board could act as a guide. A man in a dishdasha jumped off and began negotiating with him. They agreed on a price and the truck pulled away, leaving Mohammed with us. Without even consulting us, Mohammed walked up to our two vehicles and let the air out of the tires. We had already let some air out ourselves, but we didn’t dare take them that low. Our tires now looked like large jelly donuts. Mohammed then opened the driver’s door and pointed at the accelerator. “Doucement, doucement,” he repeated. Ahh, the trick to driving in sand was to drive sweetly? Or did he mean “gently?” Then he climbed into the Combi and shot off. Mohammed drove like a demon. Andrew had barely double clutched into second when we lost sight of their car. Soon we, too, were flying along at 30 mph. The simple act of lowering the tire pressure had made all the difference in the world. With our heavy trailer, though, we were pushing the Land Rover to its limits. For hours we followed the tracks made by the Combi. As dusk fell, the Combi was still not in sight. In the gathering darkness, we could barely discern their tracks running up the side of a broad swath of dunes. Our Land Rover hit the slope and began to climb. That’s when we heard the crunch. The Land Rover simply stopped moving, even as the engine continued to race. Andrew turned off the engine and laid his head on the steering wheel. “We just broke our rear axle,” he said flatly. We 22
stared at each other. It was too dark to do anything further. Thirty minutes later, the Combi returned to find out what had happened. That night, we lay on our sleeping bags on the roof of the Land Rover, looking up at the most brilliant night sky either of us had ever seen. But we were too depressed and nervous to take much joy from the sight. Our adventure, more than a year in the planning, now hung by a thread. Despite the lessons given to us by Scotty, we weren’t mechanics. What would we do if we couldn’t fix the car? Would we have to abandon the Land Rover in the desert? Raw fear gripped us through the night. The next morning dawned clear. We dug a pit under the car and lay a tarp down for Andrew to work on. We didn’t want sand to get onto the diff or axles. I opened the shop manual. As I started reading the repair steps to Andrew, the wind picked up. Mohammed tapped me on the shoulder. Sandstorm, he said. I jumped up and started positioning jerrycans and boxes—anything that could act as a wind block—around the Land Rover, and barricaded Andrew in. The wind increased in strength, shrieking through the gaps in our makeshift rampart, sand stinging our faces. I got down on my belly with a towel wrapped around my head and shouted the instructions to Andrew from the manual. Removing the half shafts confirmed our diagnosis. The long shaft had sheared inside the differential. Slitting his eyes against the blowing sand, Andrew worked on the bolts securing the diff and finally removed it. There, at last, was the broken section of axle. But he was unable to pop it out. Realizing that the diff was useless if we couldn’t remove the axle stub, Andrew tried everything, finally beating at it with a screwdriver and hammer—to no avail. The piece was stuck. Luckily for us, the trailer—the back-end of an old Series II—carried our spare differential. The sandstorm passed as quickly as it had arrived, leaving the sky clear and us cautiously optimistic. Andrew dropped the diff from the trailer and installed it in our Land Rover. He then installed a new axle, again following the directions spelled out in the factory manual. It looked as if he might actually have fixed the car. As Andrew put the car back together, my brain shifted into overdrive. The axle had broken because we were driving too fast over bad ground while pulling a heavy load. We had been warned and now something had to change. The trailer had to go. We unpacked the trailer and considered each piece of equipment anew. Everything now had to be carried in the Land Rover, so we could keep only the most essential gear. We strapped our 10 jerry cans and two water jugs to the roof rack along with a spare wheel and some boxes of spares. We would no longer be able to sleep on the roof, but it seemed a small price to pay. Abandoned in the desert was the trailer, along with its brand new tires, and sundry equipment. We knew
Mohammed would be back as soon as possible to salvage our wreck. Released of the burden of the trailer, our Land Rover didn’t get stuck again. She fairly floated above the sand as we surged southwest toward the coast. She was in her element and seemed to be enjoying herself. Later that afternoon, we crested a high ridge of dunes and found ourselves on the beach, 160 kilometers from Nouakchott. From here, the highway to the capital was the beach, a run best attempted at low tide. Our relationship with the Dutch had not improved, especially after they had considered abandoning us in the desert while we repaired the axle. Now they wanted to press on to the capital, so we let them go. Instead, Andrew and I decided to stop and enjoy the scenery. We set up camp above the high-tide line and watch the sun set over the Atlantic. The next morning, a dark cloud appeared in the distance. We thought it was another sandstorm, so we gathered our equipment and stowed it securely. It was no sandstorm. It was an immense swarm of locusts—millions upon millions of them, blown into the desert and now starving. They descended on us in a fury, consuming the remains of our breakfast and chewing at our tires. We swatted at them with our shoes, but it was an uneven fight. We dived into the Land Rover and pulled onto the beach. It wasn’t quite low tide yet, but we couldn’t stay where we were.
As it was, locusts were trying to work their way through the mesh covering the window vents. We cranked the vents closed, hearing the crunch of locust bodies. Locusts thudded in a steady stream against the windshield. Our run down the beach was fast and smooth after the dunes of the desert. We picked out a straight line just above the wash of the waves and floored it. As I crushed a locust that was working its way through the vent, I caught a glint from the corner of my eye. I turned just in time to see a huge rogue wave come rushing up the beach. Before I could even yell a warning, the wave hit us, sending a sheet of foaming water over the Land Rover and obliterating any view of the outside. The engine sputtered, caught, and then died. We sat stranded—again—with seawater cascading around us. We both jumped out. In one quick motion, we had the hood up and started drying off sparkplugs, distributor cap, and everything else. We were a blur of activity, while water lapped at our tires. We knew people had lost their vehicles on this last stretch. We didn’t want to be a chapter in that book. Andrew jumped in the car, turned the key, and pressed her starter button; she coughed, sputtered, and purred. We were on our way. We had survived the Sahara. [To be continued]

DISC BRAKE KITS / SERIES II, IIA, III 1960 ON
Front Kit shown PLA6100KV
Now you can install the latest Defender disc brake components onto your trusty 88” or 109” Land Rover and enjoy amazingly quick and controlled stopping power. Front kits are based on a new hub assembly and new swivel ball housing, cast from ductile iron with a minimum strength rating of 80,000 pounds per square inch, this kit is an engineering masterpiece. The front caliper mounts are cast into the housings, just like Defender, to handle the massive 4 piston Defender calipers that grab 12 inch vented Defender discs, just like the NAS 90 enjoys. Timm’s rear conversion kit uses the same hub assemblies with solid Defender rear discs and 2 piston Defender rear calipers. Using all Defender brake components, as well as wheel bearings and seals, means easy service, easy parts availability in the future, and adds directly to the value of your Land Rover. These kits are designed to work with an 88” or 109” dual power master cylinder available on Land Rovers manufactured from 1969 through 1984. For owners with early single non-power system master cylinders, you will need to convert to a dual power master cylinder. This conversion involves installing a vacuum port into your intake manifold, installing a dual power pedal box assembly which houses the dual master cylinder, vacuum servo unit and brake light switch. This pedal assembly is larger in size. It will require modifying your wing top, splashguard mount, and installing a Series III style splashguard. You will then need to re-plumb your clutch master, and install additional brake lines to complete the dual circuit. You will also have the option of adding in a safety failure junction valve, with or without warning light, and choosing between hydraulically or mechanically activated brake lights. These parts can be found in our catalog or on our website in our Series III brake 26

This is a bolt-on conversion that requires no drilling or fabrication. First Impressions –
“Welcome to Land Rovers” Story by Tom Lynch, as told to Tom Johnson
[Tom Lynch, Andover, NH, is an avid Land Rover enthusiast and a founder of the new Southern New Hampshire Land Rover Club. Tom Johnson, Henniker, NH, interviewed him for this article –ed.] We rolled up to the house. All my pent up excitement was finally relieved; as I stepped out I glanced eagerly at my newly purchased Series III. It sat there proud with its well-suited flat green paint job, unaware of what was to come. This was the start of a new beginning, the beginning of Land Rover ownership, and what a wonderful thing it would become. A few years ago, my son Jon got stuck out on some power lines with his 2wd Ford Ranger pickup. A Series Land Rover was dispatched the next day and extricated with little effort. I was so impressed with the vehicle. A few years went by and never gave the Land Rover much thought until, while visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom, I came across a Series Land Rover on display. All of a sudden, my interest returned. Due to the then recent sale of a beach house, I had the funds to follow through on my desires to own a Series Land Rover. Suddenly, a desire became a mission, a mission for my own Series Land Rover. After visiting some different sites online that were selling Land Rovers from Europe, I decided to try EBay. There I came across a Series III that had no bids. The photos looked awesome so I decided to contact the seller in Georgia. He was a young man serving in the military who had recently returned from England with this Land Rover. Now being home, he told me he was selling his Rover because he had purchased a home in Augusta and needed the cash for home projects. He stated that the Rover was his daily driver in England, and that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle at all. After about a week of waiting, the online auction closed without a buyer. I immediately contacted the owner and made arrangements to buy it. I purchased 2 one-way tickets to GA and reserved a U-Haul Truck and trailer. The truck was for the extra parts that came with the Rover. Did I mention that the owner was big into buying as many spare parts as he could afford while overseas? Well, he was, and as I have learned with Land Rovers you can never have too many spare parts! A few days before Thanksgiving Day 2007, my son Jon and I boarded one of 3 planes that day. We flew from Manchester, NH to Philadelphia, connected to a flight to Atlanta, and then another to Augusta’s Bush Field, which resembled a grassy airstrip from the 40's. Jamey, the seller, met us at the airport and brought us to the Land
Rover. As we rolled up I was excited to see it – and yes, it was everything I hoped for. The flat green paint didn’t exactly scream out to me, but in its own way whispered "Welcome To Land Rovers". I was hooked. We got the U-Haul Truck and trailer and loaded her up. Jamey’s family showed us the meaning of southern hospitality and took us to a rib joint appropriately named “Sticky Fingers.” The whole crew showed up: Jamey’s mom and step dad, brother, and his grandpa. We met some wonderful new friends; as we bid them farewell they wished us a safe trip home. We headed back with a 1978 Land Rover Series III in tow. We got home two days later at 5 am, parked the truck, and hit the sack. It wasn’t long before we had the vehicle registered and the tests began. The suspension was agonizingly stiff so we dug through the spare parts and pulled out the parabolic springs and new shocks. After we installed them, she rode like a Caddy! We did minor improvements, shot some video, and found our way to Land Rover internet forums. However I was surprised to find that there were no clubs in southern New Hampshire. So, after visiting some out of state forums and clubs, I decided it was time to start one. I opened up a Yahoo Group page and called it Southern New Hampshire Land Rovers. I put up some photos, some chatter about my Land Rover and information about a field I found north of here. My first member called himself ARMY ROVER; I met him on another site and he found mine through a link I had posted. Members began to pour in. We held our first "Meet and Greet" in Windham, NH. We had 3 Land Rovers show up; mine was dead in the water due to a bad ignition switch. We soon found ourselves back to my 4 acres in Hampstead, where Don Trudeau, owner of a tricked out ‘91 Great Divide Edition Range Rover Classic, helped me fix my Series. We then found our way down the slushy muddy trails behind my house. We didn’t have much, but it was our first meet, and that was exciting in itself. We had a good foundation to build upon. Southern New Hampshire Land Rovers has grown since, and we meet every month as a club and wheel as friends. Membership is open to all who want to ride responsibly. We don’t mind what vehicle you own, however, we do care that you have a group to go with. We know that there is safety in numbers. Our club members have the skill and knowledge to get you in and out safely. As for me, I will be club president for this year and only time will show what’s in store for this group. But I will always be proud of the club that I founded, the friendship of our members and my Land Rover.

DailyLife Driver: with an Aging “ProperRange Rover
Story by: Mike Koch Photos by: Matt Martin
The Range Rover Classic has a presence. It possesses a certain flair, a standing. It is so much better than anything I expected. 34
Since purchasing my 1993 Range Rover Classic on 10 October 2007 there has only been one repair bill. It wasn’t even a “bad” one, costing me the equivalent of four tanks of petrol. If I had to nitpick - which I won’t because I am so in love with my Range Rover – I might mention a few oddball electrical issues and point our some corrosion but nothing significant. At fifteen years of age, it is still a remarkable machine with an equally remarkable thirst for petrol. It’s currently ranked as the most reliable yet least efficient vehicle I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned well over a dozen. Although, after recently adding a bottle of Amsoil Performance Improvement Gas Additive, my fuel economy has increased by two miles per gallon, truly a blessing. While this doesn’t astonish Prius drivers, as a percentage, it is an admirable achievement. Keeping a keen eye on tyre pressure also helps to maintain optimal fuel economy in a vehicle that was never designed with economy in mind. In the Rover community, it’s common knowledge that if you balk at V8 petrol bills, you’ll never be able to afford the maintenance costs. My Classic and I have just debunked this theory; pour the champagne. In addition to being trouble-free, I genuinely enjoy driving my Range Rover even though our “honeymoon” has been over for some time. While I could go on and on inventorying the little annoying items wrong with my Classic, gazing over at my girlfriend and asking, “Shall we take the Range Rover?” has such a nice ring to it. The other night, we were headed to a dinner party on the other side of Burlington, a distance I would normally walk. The humidity levels were inhospitable and the rain was coming down in sheets. While other guests braved the storm wielding umbrellas and arrived saturated, at a dozen miles per gallon, we arrived unflustered, cool and collected, having ridden in the air-conditioned comfort of my Range Rover. All this was grand until I stepped out of my Rover and into an ankle-deep puddle wearing my new brown loafers. Brilliant Michael, brilliant. On the topic, New England seems to
be slowly turning into a rain forest, at least in the summer season. With regular violent thunderstorms and frequent rain showers, the weatherband (WB) button on the radio of my Classic gets exercised regularly. My Range Rover doesn’t spend an awful lot of time in the woods, because at 178,000 miles I am providing it with a somewhat comfortable retirement. It’s still looking sharp, both inside and out, and I intend to keep it that way. These days, aside from its regular commuting duties, it has been playing the role of my noble Porter, hauling everything from antique writing desks, to the occasional case of cabernet, to the Series cylinder head being dropped off at the machine shop. Some days, I feel like I’m living in a 1993 Range Rover dealer brochure. Reliability has been impressive, especially when compared to my black 2003 German executive sedan, whose manufacturer shall remain anonymous. In the last two months, this devil has cost me $1,999.00 spread over four separate repair bills, not including its most recent ailment, an ill-behaving coolant temperature sender, making British Leyland look like they had their act together. It’s plagued with countless electrical demons, has a penchant for flatbeds, and leaving me stranded on the roadside. While my sedan is in the shop nearly every other week, I drive my Range Rover confidently, knowing if something breaks, I can probably fix it myself. I continue to recommend buying a properly looked after Range Rover Classic before they get any longer in the tooth. You’ll be visiting petrol stations frequently, but it’ll be worth every single burnt-up penny. My Classic gets more looks than a Porsche Cayenne and is never mistaken for a drug dealer’s SUV. Recently, a friend said to me “driving the Range Rover isn’t just for special occasions Mike, driving the Range Rover IS a special occasion.” Grinning like the Cheshire Cat, I asked, “Shall we take the Range Rover?” _______ ________

The Renaissance: Renewed Enthusiasm and Lower Prices usher in the second coming of the Classic. Story by: Calef Letorney Photo by: Matt Martin
In the Spring 2008 issue of The News, Michael Koch educated us on the brief history of Land Rover Classic Parts (LRCP). Michael also explained how Rovers North bought out a large portion of the LRCP inventory carrying on the Classic Parts Legacy here in North America. What Mikey selfishly hid from his faithful readers is that Rovers North bought many of these Genuine Land Rover Parts at discounted prices. This matters because Genuine Land Rover Parts are forced to compete in a spare parts market where they are pitted against low-cost, mass-produced imitations. With the ability to purchase Genuine Land Rover Parts at discounted prices, Rovers North now offers many Genuine Land Rover Classic Parts at “discount part” prices, making it a better time than ever to choose Land Rover Genuine Parts direct from Rovers North. This decrease in cost aids the resurging popularity of the Range Rover Classic and Discovery I despite rising fuel costs and the evercontagious “hip to be green” philosophy that is spreading faster than Zebra Muscles in Lake Champlain. I’m all for greening it up, but I’m disheartened by the negativity our marque receives due to the poor fuel economy of the gasoline engines needed to accelerate our sturdy vehicles in a somewhat timely manner. So if you are not willing to sacrifice your Landy, but don’t want to look insensitive, I suggest visiting the Glen Beck online studio store to find his “Hydrocarbon
36
Powered Eco-Vehicle” bumper sticker. You will feel a little better about your pig every time the person at the pump next to you admiringly inquires about your “hydrocarbon conversion.” But we don’t need smart-ass bumper stickers to keep the passion alive. I can’t tell you how many readers told me they saw a bit of themselves in Mike Koch’s article, Simply Irresistible (The News, Winter 08). Despite guiltlessly appropriating the title of Robert Palmer’s 1988 Rock hit Simply Irresistible, Mikey passionately describes the rousing and chicly, adventurous life-style that a $1,100 Range Rover Classic can afford a young adult. His enthusiasm is tampered with a respect for the number of common RR Classic failures that could yield a repair bill greater than the vehicle’s purchase price. Armed with a “run it till she quits, then buy another one” attitude, Mikey is determined to enjoy the affordable luxury found in the Indian summer of the Range Rover Classic. The abundance of cheap older Range Rovers is no secret. Classic prices are kept low by hordes of non-enthusiasts who are no longer enamored with their aging status symbol. To most, the Range Rover Classic and Discovery 1 are nothing more than mechanically liable gas-guzzlers. Perfect! This means more inexpensive Classic vehicles on the market for the discerning enthusiast to choose from. While some of these fine vehicles are kept in a relatively stock form,

many are transformed into inexpensive off-road beaters that are arguably the most capable Land Rovers on the trail. Not unlike the $2,000 stereo systems I occasionally see (or hear!) fitted in a $500 hoopty, many Classics and Discovery I’s are kitted out with trail accessories worth substantially more than the vehicle itself. The off-road ability of a disposable vehicle is truly amazing. Few would argue that Classic vehicles are physically more capable than Defenders, but off-roading isn’t just about the vehicle; owner psyche proves a powerful factor when conquering obstacles. Here in the USA, Defenders are ten or even twenty times more valuable than Classic vehicles. Dented Defenders necessitate repairs to avoid a decrease in value and pride of ownership. Personally, the fear of defacing my Defender all but keeps me off the trail. I cringe every time I hear the shrieks of branches scratching their way down the side of my 110. A long time ago I made the conscious decision that I would off-road endlessly to get to remote places but I would limit my recreational off-roading. I go to Land Rover events and run trails with the soccer moms in stock vehicles because I spent weeks doing paintwork when I restored my truck. Why would I want to create more work for myself? Classic vehicles are worth next to nothing to begin with, so Classic owners push harder with less fear. It’s like the scratches on my “rock skis:” at one time the skis were new and I cared to avoid the rocks, but not any more. Not all Classic owners prescribe to this logic, but the ones that do have true off-road prowess because they just don’t give a damn. For these folks, few good dents are evidence of an active retirement for their Classic. Needless to say, I don’t even get on the trail with these types. I know I can’t hang. When I decide
I’m ready to get serious about wheeling, you know what I will do? Find a disposable Classic vehicle. Whether it’s for the off-road ability or high society style, love for the Range Rover Classic is truly abounding. In fact, some enthusiasts restore Classics knowing it will cost them several times the value of the vehicle. I was curious about this phenomenon, so I interviewed a prominent Classic enthusiast, Taylor Congleton of T. Congleton Rovers. Taylor is our unofficial resident grease monkey here at Rovers North and at 24, he has a veritable fleet of vehicles that require regular injections of Classic Parts. Besides the Discovery I with one foot in the grave, Taylor has two Classics. One is a beautiful example of a stock LWB and the other is a kitted out workhorse that gets regular off-road exercise. When I asked him why he loves Classic vehicles so much, Taylor had this to say: “The Classic does for me what the Mustang does for the older generation. It’s all I want to drive, so why would I want anything else? It’s the Classique.” Rather than justify, Taylor simply reminds us that we don’t get to choose who we love. Sure, Taylor would like to have a Defender and a Series or two, but that is in addition to his stable of Classics. With pricing and availability better than ever, the revival of the Classic is tremendous; you could even call it a renaissance. And regardless of why you love your Classic or how you use it, Rovers North has the parts you need at the best prices. Supporting evidence of our claim to low prices can be found below. As always don’t hesitate to call and speak with one of our product specialists about the 45,000 other parts we carry for your Land Rovers. _______ ________ 37

Land Rover Corporate Info DIESEL ERAD HYBRID & E_TERRAIN TECHNOLOGIES Land Rover’s engineers are now conducting real-world tests with some ground-breaking Diesel ERAD Hybrid vehicles, aimed at dramatically cutting CO2 and other emissions while still delivering characteristic Land Rover all-terrain performance. These engineering ‘mules’ are based on Freelander 2 vehicles, but the technology is designed to be scalable and modular, so could be applied across a variety of Land Rover models and powertrains. This programme is one of a broad range of sustainabilityfocused engineering programmes that Land Rover is pursuing, brought together by the company under the collective name e_TERRAIN TECHNOLOGIES. In addition to these Diesel ERAD Hybrids, Land Rover is developing a range of other emissions-busting and fuel-saving technologies that will start appearing on its production vehicles from now and over the next decade. These range from a stop-start function – which will be available next year as standard on all manual diesel Freelander 2 models – to other advanced hybrid systems and lightweight vehicle architectures.
46
“Our innovative ERAD technology featured in the LRX concept car unveiled earlier this year, and we’re now starting to deliver on our sustainability commitments with full, on-road prototypes,” says Phil Popham, Land Rover’s Managing Director. “These Diesel ERAD Hybrids mark a crucial point for Land Rover, where engineering concept is seen to become reality and our vehicles start to combine their formidable all-terrain capability with our radical new e_TERRAIN TECHNOLOGIES.” Diesel ERAD Hybrid overview Land Rover’s Diesel ERAD Hybrid was developed as part of a multimillion-pound project supported by the UK Government’s Energy Saving Trust, under the low carbon research and development programme. The objective is to develop a ‘parallel’ hybrid drive system
compatible with all-terrain four-wheel-drive capability. As parallel hybrids, the vehicles can be driven solely by electric power or by the diesel engine, or by a combination of both. The system is designed to reduce CO2 by more than 20 per cent under the NEDC test cycle and to cut it by a substantial 30 per cent in ‘real-life’ urban conditions where hybrid technologies really come into their own. Under many circumstances, today’s generation of petrol electric hybrids are little more efficient than the best modern diesel engines without hybrid technology. So Land Rover’s ambition is to add the benefits of a full hybrid system to modern, clean and efficient diesel powertrains, giving a win-win situation. To help deliver this, Land Rover has developed its own, unique Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) system, which actually has the potential to enhance the vehicle’s allterrain capability. LAND ROVER AT THE BRITISH INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW 2008 Land Rover's past, present and future are all admirably showcased at this year's British International Motor Show. The stylish, black
Defender SVX special edition has been created to celebrate the company's 60th anniversary, while the latest model line-up is headed by new and upgraded versions of the Range Rover. The stunning white LRX concept car, meanwhile, shows a clear design intent for the future – as well as introducing the possibility of ground-breaking diesel hybrid power. Land Rover has recently started real-world testing of some diesel hybrid engineering prototypes and the technology behind the story is explored as part of the brand-new Our Planet zone within the Land Rover stand. Building on the company's current communications campaign, the zone shows the diverse actions that Land Rover is taking to improve environmental performance and move towards a sustainable future. The Range Rover for 2009 The Range Rover line-up for 2009 is headed by the most luxurious full production Range Rover yet. Taking the name Autobiography, it wears a badge previously reserved for bespoke versions of the luxury 4x4. This new flagship has more leather than any Range Rover before. 47
What’s more, this is luxurious semi-aniline leather from the very best hides, which, after minimum processing, display unique, individual surface grains that increase in character with age. The Range Rover Autobiography's facia, door casings, door bins, seats and centre console are all finished in this leather, complementing the traditional interior wood. The steering wheel is leatherwrapped, the leather-topped facia has a softer, more luxurious feel, and even the floor mats are leather edge-bound. The 2009 Range Rover Autobiography also offers new 20-inch diamond-turned twin-seven-spoke alloy wheels, new paint colours and additional acoustic cabin glass, which further reduces road and wind noise, and increases security. Across the rest of the Range Rover line-up for 2009 there are new seat styles and other leather options, more new wheel styles and new exterior colours. LRX concept car Land Rover's acclaimed LRX concept car makes its official UK motor show debut in London, signalling the brand's shift into new areas of the market, while remaining true to its core values. The three-door LRX, with its more compact size, lighter weight and sustainability-focused technologies, clearly addresses the needs of a changing world. Conceived as a diesel hybrid, it offers potential fuel economy of 60 mpg (4.7 l/100 km) and CO2 emissions down to 120 g/km (on the European combined cycle). "The LRX concept delivers the powerful message that we are as serious about sustainability as we are confident about the continuing relevance and desirability of our vehicles," says Phil Popham, Land Rover’s managing director. "LRX is in every respect a Land Rover, but it’s a very different Land Rover." Our Planet zone Brand-new for the London show – and reinforcing the forwardthinking messages of the LRX concept – is the Our Planet zone, which forms a substantial part of the Land Rover stand. It shows the diverse actions that Land Rover is taking in pursuit of improving environmental performance to move towards a sustainable future, and builds on the wide-ranging Our Planet communication campaign launched earlier this year. The zone explains Land Rover's activities in four key areas: • Environmental technologies, such as diesel hybrids, to increase the efficiency of Land Rover vehicles • Conservation and humanitarian projects that the company supports around the world • Sustainable manufacturing • Land Rover’s massive CO2 offset scheme – one of the largest in the world. This offsets the CO2 emissions for the first 45,000 miles of all Land Rovers sold in the UK, as well as those produced through global manufacturing. MODEL PUPILS ENGINEER TRACKNAVCHALLENGE SUCCESS Months of dedication and team work paid off today for students from Chase Terrace Technology College, Burntwood, when they were 48
crowned the winners of Land Rover's TrackNAVCHALLENGE 2008, held at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon. Launched last year, TrackNAVCHALLENGE is a competition aimed primarily at 14-18 year olds. Teams of 4-6 are tasked with designing and building a radio-controlled 4-wheel drive vehicle that emulates what a full size Land Rover can do. Successful navigation of the vehicle over a specially designed track, developed and built by D3, ensures that it has met specifications set out by Land Rover engineers and educational specialists. In addition, a portfolio detailing the experience, design and decision making process, along with financial records and a presentation to a panel of judges, means that this challenge meets academic and industry standard benchmarks. The Challenge is designed to introduce young people to the world of engineering and enterprise in a relevant and appropriate manner that is fun, exciting and challenging. TrackNAVCHALLENGE can be undertaken by groups of four to six Key Stage 4 or 5 pupils in lessons – such as GCSE Engineering and GCSE Design and Technology – or as an extra curricular activity. It has been awarded customised accreditation by ASDAN and meets CREST award requirements at the Silver standard. It will also support the delivery of the engineering diploma starting in September and helps to meet the employer engagement requirements of the 14-19 curriculum. TrackNAVCHALLENGE's Manager, Ruth Martin said: "Land Rover launched the challenge last year to provide students and staff with a hands-on practical experience that would enhance the delivery of engineering and design and technology specifications in the classroom. It provides students with an insight into what is involved within a real engineering environment in a fun and stimulating way." Today's 2008 winning team members were each rewarded with a Land Rover mountain bike and a day at their local Land Rover experience centre where they will have the opportunity to experience Land Rover's supremacy in off-road capability. Halfords supported the
event by presenting the winning team with bicycle safety helmets. The school department who supported the winning team was also acknowledged for their support and dedication to the challenge, when Land Rover handed them a cheque for £3,000 to spend on capital equipment to support the delivery of the curriculum. Sponsored by Rapid Electronics, an award for Best Electronics was also presented to Chase Terrace's 'A-Team' and the Innovation and Creativity award, sponsored by Ricardo, was received by the 'Eco Freakzz' team from Carmarthen College in Wales. Cranfield University sponsored the Winch Test award which was presented to the 'Thermal Racing' team from Ballyclare High School in Northern Ireland. LAND ROVER’S ADVENUROUS SPIRT CAPTURED IN PHOTO EXHIBITION AT THE ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY A collection of 60 photographs that represent the spirit of adventure has been brought together for a special exhibition at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in London, to celebrate Land Rover's 60th anniversary this year. The exhibition, called Portraits of Adventure, runs from 22 July to 3 August.
Portraits of Adventure includes 50 rarely seen archive images from leading landscape, portrait, action and travel photographers, as well as 10 specially commissioned giant four-metre high portraits by top British photographer Alastair Thain, featuring adventurous personalities such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Zara Phillips. Over 3,000 photographs were researched to find the chosen 50 archive pieces. These include images of explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes and mountaineer Todd Skinner, as well as some more surprising takes on the idea of an adventurous spirit, including Marilyn Monroe, a New York cab driver, David Beckham and a group of UN peacekeepers. The photographs span the last 60 years and have been taken in many countries across the globe. If you ever wondered what Outkast’s Big Boi might have in common with Margaret Thatcher, Portraits of Adventure provides the answer! The exhibition is accompanied by a large-format coffee table book containing all the images, and proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to benefit the British Red Cross.
_______ ________ 49
EMPLOYEE PROFILE: Calef Letorney What, where, and when was your first Land Rover experience. That is a tough one. The hoop set on my dad’s 109 was my first jungle gym. Throughout my childhood my parents exclusively drove Land Rovers so I have no conscious beginning to my Land Rover interest. Actually, my mom had a Triumph for a few summers, but at least we kept it British. One of my earliest Land Rover memories was watching my older brother help my dad restore his Series IIA 109. I was too young to really help. I was so excited Junk show in action... when my dad let me use Calef reorganizes gear mid adventure the pneumatic rivet gun. That was my job; if there was riveting to be done, I was the man. Where did you grow up and what brought you to Vermont? I grew up in Westford, Vermont, here at Rovers North! My parents built the Rovers North facility in our back yard. My childhood was spent tunneling in the piles of boxes in the warehouse. I remember when I was a little one, Rob Smith and Dirk Parkins (who both still work at RN) entertained me by packing me in a stout box and pretending to ship me to Alaska. I went to college in Colorado. After graduating, I spent a year working abroad then returned to Vermont because I wanted to get involved in the family business. What Land Rover do you currently own? When I was a kid my parents always said they would not give me a car, but they would happily give me a pile of parts and help me build a Land Rover. At 15, my dad asked me what kind of Rover I wanted to build. Of course, my answer was a TDI 110. At the time, I was traveling and competing in freestyle kayaking. I wanted a 3 door 110 so I could put a bed in the back for a place to sleep on road trips. I was not home when my truck arrived, but over the phone my dad kept telling me how much I would love it and how clean it was. Imagine my surprise when I came home to a horribly 50
dented, camouflaged rolling chassis. It had a tarp where there should be a roof, no seats and a marked hole in the front where the radiator, intercooler, engine, transmission, transfer box and all that good stuff belong. Despite its rough looks, the 110 was rust-free and in beautiful condition. It took the better part of a year to get her into shape. I did all the grunt work of the restoration and my dad spent many hours helping me with the technical stuff. I have had my 110, “The Lucky Lady,” for 8 or 9 years. Like any relationship, we have had our high points and low ones. When reflecting on our love affair, what I recall best isn’t the mechanical difficulties but instead all the adventure we shared together. Just last week, I climbed up a rugged 4x4 trail to the top of a mountain in VT and spent the night under the stars in The Lucky Lady. I hope the best part of our relationship is yet to come! While I am a little ashamed of my teenage bodywork and the paint is blistering in a few places, The Lucky Lady was thoroughly protected with Waxoyl Professional Corrosion Prevention before being exposed to Vermont’s ever-corrosive winters, so she is as rust free as the day she was pushed into the RN lot! To me, rustfree is all-important because as long as she stays that way and avoids major accidents [knock, knock, knock], The Lucky Lady will live to ride again. Hopefully some time in the distant future, I will be fortunate enough to have kids that think The Lucky Lady is the coolest jungle gym in the world. How did your truck come to be known as “The Lucky Lady”? After completing my truck, a few friends gave me vehicle decorations. I got a hula girl and a chromed outline of a shapely woman sitting down. You may have seen the design before; it is pretty popular amongst truckers. The hula girl did not last long, as it did not really
fit on the dash and it was a little tacky for me, but I quite liked the chromed girl. Made of plastic and connected by thin piece of metal to a suction cup, she sways proudly in the rear window of my truck to this day. She came to be known as “The Lucky Lady” and the name got passed on to the truck she rides in. How do you use your Land Rover and what have you done to enhance this function? I use my Land Rover as my adventure enabling RV. Under my bed I can fit a cooking kit, water jugs, a cooler and all sorts of other camping supplies. Toss some sports equipment on the roof rack and just add water, wind or dirt. Voila! Instant adventure. Wherever I go, I never have to worry about finding a place to sleep. If I’m in the middle of a long drive and I’m tired, I just pull over and sleep for a few hours. I often sleep at truck stops or on the entrance ramps of the highway with the big rigs. I have slept in airport parking lots to avoid the early morning drive to catch a flight. I have slept in Wal-Mart parking lots, in the middle of cities, in the snow in the mountains and in the roasting hot deserts of Utah and Colorado. The bed in the back of my truck is actually a futon cushion on a wooden platform. The futon cushion takes up more space than a camping mattress, but it is so much more comfortable I think it is worth it. I also put in windows with screens in the back, for which I made curtains with blackout cloth. It is perfectly comfortable to sleep in for months at a time, and in high school and college I did just that. These days I spend a lot more time at Rovers North and a lot less time sleeping in of the back of my truck. What is the longest trip you have made in your Land Rover and did anything interesting happen? I have driven her from Vermont to Utah and back a few times. Maybe one day The Lucky Lady will get to see the Pacific Ocean. The stories go on and on, but here are a few of my favorites in which The Lucky Lady has a staring role. One time, on a kayaking expedition in the San Juan mountains near Durango, Colorado I woke up to discover I was parked in the middle of a torrent little stream. At dark-o-thirty a culvert plugged with sticks had redirected the creek right through our campsite. My buddies had to evacuate when a few inches of water came gushing through their tent. I was sleeping high and dry in The Lucky Lady and learned of the whole situation 4 or 5 hours later. I had a little chuckle when I found my friends on high ground surrounded by a yard sale of drying gear. Their dripping sleeping bags were slung over a fence. They lay half naked on damp sleeping pads in the dirt, trying in vain to recover lost sleep. At that point I fully appreciated the protection afforded by sleeping inside my Land Rover. The Lucky Lady also shelters me from wild animals, monsters and ghosts. On a paragliding trip to Aspen, Colorado, I found an amazing camping site up a remote side canyon. For three nights in a row, I awoke to scratching on the underbody of my truck. Several times I searched under the truck with a bright light, but I never saw anything. I knew I was not imagining it because I could see scratch marks in the Waxoyl Hardwax on the chassis. The scratching would start moments after I got back in the truck. Evil thoughts plagued me. Be it spirit or beast, it left physical scratch marks and wanted to scratch on my truck all night without being seen. I forced myself to camp at the same site my entire trip because I did not want to let a seemingly irrational fear ruin such an amazing camping site. It was
easy to be strong during the day but I was terrified at night. I slept behind locked doors, with all my gear inside, keys in the ignition, vehicle pointed towards the exit. You could say I was ready for a fast get-away. Thankfully the situation never required me to use my escape plan. Demon or critter, whatever it was, The Lucky Lady kept me safe! Equipped with a snorkel, the Lucky Lady is the shuttle vehicle of choice for one of my favorite kayak runs, Oh-Be-Joyful Creek in Crested Butte, Colorado. OBJ drops an average of 400 feet per mile in waterfalls and steep, long, playful slides. It is so much fun that during the spring melt there is typically a hand full of kayaker camped at the bottom of OBJ paddling it daily. Unfortunately, OBJ is typically a “hike and huck” run because of the creek crossing at the bottom of the access road. Hiking up the steep creek for almost two miles with 55+ lbs of kayaking gear, safety equipment, food, water and photo gear is a total pain, but few dare to cross the creek as it has drowned many stout SUVs. For many, the higher the water level, the more fun OBJ is, so there is a constant urge to drive across at higher and higher flows. Getting across the first time typically isn’t the problem, it is getting back that drowns most vehicles as the water level can rise dramatically with the snowmelt of a hot spring day. Needless to say, everyone loves fearlessly charging the creek crossing with a pyramid of kayaks strapped on top of The Lucky Lady to get a high flow run on OBJ. How long have you been working for Rovers North and what positions have you held? Can you describe what you do at Rovers North today? When I was in school, I spent a number of summers working at Rovers North. I have done everything from shop gofer and building maintenance to working in the shipping department. A year after graduating from college, I decided I wanted to move home and get involved in the family business. I currently work on a few projects here at RN, but the most noteworthy is my involvement with Waxoyl Professional. As the readers are undoubtedly aware, Land Rovers are some of the best rusting vehicles in the world. Here at RN, it drives us crazy to watch rust destroy our beloved LR’s, devaluing our investment and ruining the pride of ownership. I know more than a few owners that report laying awake at night thinking of rust eating their Land Rovers. A handful of years ago we got switched on to Waxoyl Professional. We used it on our own trucks and found that it was the only product on the market that could completely protect a Land Rover from rusting. And so we promptly began offering it to our customers. As mentioned earlier, I have Waxoyl Professional on The Lucky Lady and her underbody is rust-free, despite use in the salty Vermont winters and a less than fanatical washing schedule or lack there of. We were so enthusiastic about Waxoyl that a year and a half ago Waxoyl AG of Switzerland asked us to be their US distributor. Waxoyl Professional makes not only corrosion prevention but also a full line of car valeting products, 100 Plus paint sealant, UPT fabric protection, and Topwax-6 storage protection. Importing and distributing car care products and corrosion protection is a bit different than selling Land Rover parts so it requires a concerted effort. Greg Jutras and I are the Waxoyl Professional product specialists and I head up our Waxoyl importation, distribution and marketing effort. I have yet to really nail down a good title for all that, but it does keep me busy. _______ ________ 51
BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL By Jeffrey B. Aronson
A fisherman friend came up to me in our island’s village parking lot, a wharf on the edge of the main harbor. “You know, Jeff,” he said, “You can actually buy cars made after 1980.” He then touched the door handle on his family minivan and watched the door slide open electronically. So what if his door moved automatically? Does his car provide him with health benefits? I don’t think so! Performing even the simplest maintenance on a Land Rover gives you a fitness workout usually accomplished only with the aid of those strange devices extolled by Chuck Norris and introduced by lovely blondes on late night infomercials. The Land Rover exhaust is a series of bolted together pipes. Replacing them gives you the chance to get eaten alive by bugs while lying on the ground, chew on rust flakes, spit out dirt and search for nuts, bolts and washers that fall onto the ground. And it’s free! Lying on your back under the differential and frame works, lets you work your legs and abs as you slide into position. Land Rover’s clever use of both ½” and 7/16” nuts and bolts on the same hanger assures you of adequate repetitions as you crawl back to get the correct sockets and wrenches. Pulling yourself rearward by lifting your body from the rear springs will work your triceps and biceps. 52
Forgetting that you previously used yet a third size of bolt and nut in the past will only increase the workout. Reaching for the three bolts that connect the intermediate pipe to the header pipe result in long, slow crunches – perfect for those 6-pack abs. Dodging the falling rust and dirt – and the occasional slipping ratchet or wrench – improves your reflexes, too. Lots of people talk about fitness but recently I walked the walk. While driving throughout my village one day the muffler on the QE I parted company with the intermediate pipe. Oddly the muffler split just before the flange connecting the two pieces; a close look at the intermediate pipe uncovered that it, too, had significant rust at the flanges connecting it to the header pipe and the muffler. Clearly the intermediate pipe and muffler required replacement; I ordered both from Rovers North. I decided to replace the hangers and the connecting bolts at the same time. Following the regimen outlined above I slid out from under the car brimming with good health and feeling the burn from the workout. Try it yourself – price out the components of good health on the Rovers North website. Operators are standing by! _______ ________ On a ferry trip from the mainland in May, my Land Rover demonstrated the importance of a short 88” wheelbase when it squeezed in as the last car to get aboard the ferry. The crew measuring vehicles actually moved me ahead of other cars precisely because, to their surprise, it would fit in the remaining small space. A group of seriously-outfitted bicyclists and their touring bikes surrounded the Rover on the stern. One pointed out features to his friend in French; when we began chatting, he introduced himself as Marc Tremblay, a Quebec enthusiast whose rebuilding a ’68 Series II-A. He’s starting to put the car back together now that it sits on a new frame purchased from Rovers North. With his group of friends, they were touring the coast of Maine before heading back to Canada. The Land Rover community is worldwide and you’re assured of meeting someone, somewhere, who is also an enthusiast. Of course, to attract them, you have to get your Land Rover out in front of people. _______ ________
Long suffering spouses or significant others of Land Rover enthusiasts know that conversation with them tend to be the same car stuff over and over. A simple question about your Rover unleashes a 15 minute exposition tracing the history of the marque from its appearance at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948 to all the quirks of your current Rover[s]. One Saturday morning I was enjoying such a conversation with a summer resident, an architect, who is considering purchasing a Land Rover for island use. I had just begun the part of my speech where I lie brazenly about low running costs and trumped up reliability claims when a local interrupted me to say “John is having problems with his Land Rover. He’s looking for you.” Tell an animal lover that a furry thing is in distress and you will watch the most somnolent individual leap into action faster than speeding bullet. Let this Land Rover enthusiast know of a Rover in distress and I’m there. John purchased a brilliantly engineered Series Rover conversion by East Coast Rover. Underneath the car is a Defender frame with its disk brakes and coil sprung suspension. A Land Rover diesel resides under the hood. While a bit noisy and throbbing under way, it rides superbly and feels like it could conquer any terrain. At this moment, it seemed to puke large amounts of black fluid from the front to the engine. Just as I lifted the hood to check the oil level, our local boatyard owner, Kevin, who delights the woes of my Land Rovers, pulled up with a huge grin plastered on his face. “I should have known I’d find you under the hood of a Land Rover, “ he said with delight. At least he knows diesels, and he confirmed immediately that the black stuff on the ground was fuel, not oil. After checking for oil and fuel I asked John to start the car. Fuel seemed to pulse out of a fitting on what Kevin identified as the injector pump. The fitting had a ¾” nut head surrounding it and a threaded center from which the fuel spurted out. I thought of trying to remove the fitting and then thought twice. I know next to nothing about Land Rover diesels and if I screwed it up, the car would never be able to leave the island. So I called Rovers North and caught Mark Letorney at work. He gave me sage advice on
what not to touch but agreed that if I could find a bolt that would fit the threaded hole in the fitting, I might staunch the flow of diesel fuel. So I drove to a fisherman’s supply shop and bought several different sized bolts. A thin bolt of 1 inch thread fit perfectly and John’s Rover stopped leaking fuel. He’ll be taking it to East Coast Rover for a proper repair, but once again, a field repair permitted a Rover to remain in service on the road. _______ ________ My Land Rovers, both 1966 88” II-As, help me earn a living on this island. For long stretches of time, the QE I [the green station wagon] and the QM I [the red hardtop] might never exceed 30 mph. Generally they’re loaded to the gills with lawn mowing equipment and/or house painting gear, tools, and occasionally, passengers. Indeed, this very morning, the QE I took me two miles along a rocky, muddy trail into the woods to a work site. I left the car in high range, engaged 4-wheel drive and trundled along in first or second gear. As always, the surefootedness and nimbleness of the Land Rover amazed me. I’ve been sitting in the QE I for nearly 18 years now and it remains hugely entertaining. The capacity of the car to claw its way over any ground, seemingly without doing any damage to itself or the terrain beneath its wheels is amazing. Land Rover enthusiasts take a lot for granted; after all, our world tends to place our beloved vehicles near the center of our lives. It’s hard to remember that given the very small number of Land Rovers produced each year [barely 200,000 worldwide], millions of drivers have never been inside a Land Rover. I recently took 4 summer visitors on a tour of photogenic locales on this island. They gravitated immediately to the jump seats in the rear. We searched out the dirt lanes and trails that would provide them with spectacular vistas. What really entertained them was the features of the Land Rover: the folding jump seats, the scuttle vents, the individual windshield wipers, the sliding front windows and the alpine windows over the rear seats. Entering and exiting the car through the rear door proved equally fun, too. Remember that while you might have accumulated many years of familiarity with your Land Rover – any model – millions of drivers around the world know nothing about the clever and functional engineering inside the car. Take them for a ride and demonstrate why you
love your Land Rover. _______ ________ Living on a Maine island, national trends can be slow to make their mark. From all their sales reports, Land Rover has enjoyed a great year – especially in light of the public malaise regarding fuel prices. Range Rover Sport and Range Rover vehicles have led the charge; the LR3 and LR2 have stagnated recently. From the microeconomic perspective I can report there are two known newer Range Rovers among the summer residents and one Range Rover Classic. There’s also an LR3, a Discovery II, a Discovery I, an East Coast Rover modified Series/coil spring chassis/diesel and a Defender 90 SW spotted during the summer months. Our year-round population features two II-As, a Series III 88”, a military 109” pickup with canvas tilt, and one NAS Defender 90. Not bad for a small island off the coast of Maine. So where are all the Range Rovers? I found them in New York City. This research expedition grew out of a leaky brake line suffered by a Volvo. The owners, Mark and Mary Lou, came with their children to the island from Cos Cob, CT, to plan the construction of their new vacation home. When their Volvo’s master cylinder seemed low on fluid, they bought a bottle and kept adding copious amounts. I had their son apply the brake pedal as I lay beneath the car. The amount that spurted onto my face revealed the source of the leak – a major brake line – and signaled this car would have no safe braking whatsoever. They rented a car on the mainland for their return home while I helped arrange for a field repair by the local mechanic. The following weekend I drove their car to Connecticut. On the drive through southern Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, I spotted several Discoverys and LR3’s as I approached suburban commuting routes or regions with Land Rover dealerships. The numbers rose dramatically as I drove onto the Merritt Parkway, an east-west route from Hartford to the New York line. The tree-lined limited access highway had so many Land Rovers traveling it that I assumed there must be a commercial being filmed somewhere nearby. If there are any scruffy vehicles (like mine) in Fairfield County, CT, they are well-hidden behind the pruned and clipped greenery. The next morning Mark decided that I should accompany him to the nearby financial jungle of Wall Street. This would prove an
interesting anthropological expedition for me – what a shame to undertake it without my Land Rover! At the train station Mark introduced me to his friends, significant people in the world of international finance. Their idea of an island – Manhattan with its several million residents – differed wildly from mine – with barely 1,200 residents. Still, I found a Land Rover connection through one commuter, a British ex-pat who owned a late 90’s Range Rover P-38A. It had been at a service department so often that he had taken to calling it “The English Patient.” From the 50th floor of a Wall Street building I viewed the famous sites along the Hudson River, met people whose decisions have major impact on our economic lives, and then started my 7:30 am walk up Broadway to Grand Central Station. New Yorkers reading this column will understand that I stood out like one of the aliens from Invasion of the Body Snatchers because I watched everyone and everything around me. I actually paid attention to the two guys threatening each other at an intersection with ever-increasing ferocity. Unlike the dozens of people around me I took their statements about masculinity, sexual preferences and “girliness” seriously. Drivers waiting for the lights to change found the entire incident entertaining. I found it enlightening; the pedestrians surrounding me found it boring. That’s when I started counting Range Rovers – the numbers grew as I marched uptown and walked over to 5th Avenue. No wonder Londoners called Range Rovers “Chelsea Tractors.” The more affluent or prestigious neighborhood I entered, the more Range Rovers I saw. The ultimate New York sighting to me was the Range Rover Sport tripled parked – at 8:15 am – in front of a building. Perhaps it was tripled parked because the existing parking spaces were taken up by other Range Rovers. Explorers stomped around Africa to find out how strange wildlife lives. My trek through the 50+ blocks of Manhattan proved to me where Range Rover reside and thrive. It was a thrilling adventure and fitting proof of the Range Rover’s most recent award, the J.D. Powers consumer satisfaction award in the “large premium multiactivity vehicle” category. _______ ________

SIGHTINGS This summer in New England has been spectacular – comfortable temperatures, lots of tourists and many bags of entries from Sighters around the continent. Sighter Steve Johnson, Johns Island, SC, reminds us that “it’s fun to keep an eye out for our favorite vehicle.” Once again there are superb entries that warrant emptying more of the crockery cupboards at Rovers North. As always, it’s helpful for rookies to review the rules for Sightings - it can be just as useful for the grizzled Sighting veterans as well. Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in a distinctive way. Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won’t surprise us, either, and thus we can’t award you a mug. We’re delighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in off orad magazines, British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. You shouldn’t be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways to get a coffee mug. Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication, we close off the Sightings. If we’ve mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we might not mention it again. If you’re new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Welcome aboard and send us your new Sightings. Rule #4 - We’re not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, one mug per Sighting per issue. Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits. Rule #6 - Psst... if we can’t read you name and address because of atrocious penmanship, we can’t recognize your Sighting nor send you a mug. Psst... E-mail submissions remember we can’t send a 62
mug by e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might make an error. Let us know if you think you’ve been jobbed, but all decisions of the Editor are final. The last “big name” movie to feature Land Rovers in Africa was “Bucket List.” The latest film that adds Series Land Rovers to the mix of famous stars is “Momma Mia.” Steve Quigley, Flagstaff, AZ, and John Derosa, Fairfield, CT,
spotted the topless Series III 88” in the movie trailer. Albert Moore, Hallsville, TX, spotted a Series II-A and a “late model” Range Rover in “Fierce People.” On television, Michael Willaford watched “Special Forces: Manhunt” which covered Botswana and showed multiple Land Rover sightings. Dave Bowman, Orange, VA, saw the Anthony Boudain episode in Tuscany when he rode around in a Defender 110. The Filson’s catalog joins a large number of outdoor clothing companies featuring Land
Rovers to spice up the product line. Their women’s catalogue features a Defender 110 right on the table of contents page, according to Steve Johnson, Johns Island, SC. Ann Williamson, Delanson, NY, Chris Nestor, Melrose, WI, Zuleima Coughlan, White Plains, NY, and Bernard McMahon, Washington, DC, spotted the Rovers. Land’s End has a “Business Outfitters” catalogue that cites how Land Rover NA used Land’s End logo services for “brand evolution” and features two Range Rovers in the catalogue, according to Allen Padgett, Lafayette, GA. Aussies don’t buy as many Land Rovers as in decades past but when Rodd & Gunn, a clothing company there, wanted to promote its products, naturally, they chose a Series III in the outback. Michael Weaver, San Diego, CA, sent us a copy of the catalogue. The new Wii game, Wild Earth: African Safari has – what else – zebras and Land Rovers on the cover, reports Robert Keintz, Allenwood, PA.
When Cessna wanted to tout “the good life” in an ad in AOPA Pilot magazine, it included an LR3, notes Jennifer Drugge, Beaufort, SC. AT&T wants to herd businesses into buying space in its Yellow Pages, so they used a Defender 110 as the shepherding vehicle. Sherry Block, Hadlyme, CT, Billy Tanner, Dawsonville, GA, and Scott Peterson, Kennesaw, GA, saw the tv ad in which the Rover rolls over, but the drivers emerge unscathed. When IBM wants to draw attention to “emerging markets” around the globe, what more iconic image to feature than a topless Series III? Alexander Ackermann, Chatham, NJ, Ahmad Ijaz, Northport, AL and Steve Johnson, Johns Island, SC, spotted the magazine and newspaper ads. Jonsered makes great landscaping equipment. In their latest catalogue, they feature Land Rovers to enhance their products. James Prentice, Topsham, ME sent in this Sighting. A Sears catalogue featuring “casual summer wear” includes a Series Land Rover. Brian Eberts, Dunsford, ON, Canada, notes “it must be casual to lean on the back of a Series Land Rover [hope it’s washable, too –ed.] Pelican has included Land Rovers over the years in its print ads. Most recently, Mark Freeman, Green Ridge, MO, spotted a Defender in their ad in Safety + Health. Northern Tool and Equipment has also brought back a photo of a Range Rover front end in their most recent catalogue, reports Rebecca Dominguez, Branford, CT. Corey Haas, Memphis, TN, notes that Panama Jack suntan lotion still has a 109” SW on its label. In a humorous comment on our mention of the latest Indiana Jones movie, MSNBC calls him a “bad archaeologist” because “the most exciting thing that happens to many archaeologists in the field might be battling dysentery or coping with a lemon of a Land Rover.” Neither Leslie Bright, Kingsport, TN, nor we, was amused. In that same light, we’ve mentioned National Treasure 2 before, but Albert Moore, Hallsville, TX, and Shawn LaClair, Sodus, NY, were so enthused they sent the Sightings to us. John Tackely, Richmond, VA, found a fulsome article on Bryan Tate's Defender 90 in the Wrightsville Beach Magazine. Congratulations of C-list celebrity John Mayer who was caught this June driving his Defender with no license plates. Andrew Sanchez, Irving, TX, spotted the “news” on Yahoo. Jim Dargan, Plymouth, MA, caught the end of Shark Attack and noted the Series Rover in the film. Martin Kilcourse, Conshohocken, PA, just bought a ’95 Defender 90 and sent in his first Sighting. For some unimaginable reason, he says he saved the 2004 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, the one with the lovely model leaning against the lovelier Defender 90. Of course, it’s a great photo of the D90. Our publication deadlines for recent issues came right on the heels of each other and Sightings submission times were short this summer. So we wanted to give credit to those who sent in Sightings mentioned in previous
issues: Steve Johnson, Johns Island, SC, Glenn Shriver, Chicago, IL, Kevin Humphrey, Jonesboro, AR, Todd Miller, Fairburn, GA, James Reynolds, Jacksonville, FL, [J. L. Powell], Scott Tognocchi, Owings Mills, MD, Jim Dargan, Plymouth, MA, Mark Puzella, Cohasset, MA, Chance Geurin, Monument, CO, Emily Dawson, and Ron Thompson, Baltimore, MD [J Crew catalogue], and Brian Jordan, Centennial, CO [Beretta USA]. Howard Kritzer, Bonita Springs, FL, has worked as a towing operator for a decade and notes that Kenworth promotes its flatbeds in print ads with an LR3 on the back. He suggests that maybe “someone high on the KW food chain owns an LR3 and is getting back at Land Rover.” On the other hand, he notes that “I have met some of my best friends behind a tow truck standing next to their Rover on the side of the road. The next stop is always www.roversnorth.com.” Talk about using Land Rovers to bolster a weak publication! When JP magazine, a Jeep-only publication, wanted to cover the sale of Land Rover to Tata Motors, they used a Series II on duty with African Game Rangers. Jeff Stewart, Cheney, WA, is certain that the photo “had Wrangler owners turning green with envy.” _______ ________
