LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Mark, On behalf of Texas Rovers, I would like to sincerely thank you for Rovers North’s generous donation of gift certificates, shirts, caps, etc., for SCARR ’08. As a Platinum Sponsor, Rovers North was recognized at our Saturday dinner, attended by over 200 enthusiasts from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Virginia, Missouri, Louisiana, Argentina and England. The event attracted 100 registered Land Rovers: an LR2, several LR3s, Range Rover Sports, Disco I and IIs, Range Rovers, Defender 90’s and 110s, and several Series vehicles. Your contribution helped make our off road event and raffle a big success and your magazine was inserted into each registration packet. Your website has been added to our outstanding sponsor list and is clearly recognized as a preferred vendor by our 400+ registered users. Texas Rovers will start planning SCARR 09 this summer and it is planned to be larger and hopefully more successful next year. We look forward to your continuing participation as a SCARR sponsor for next year. Once again, thank you for your generous contribution. Laura Shacklette SCARR 08 Events Coordinator [Congratulations for the great event. We hope you like the article that appears elsewhere in this issue –ed] Dear Rovers North, I just finished the latest Rovers North News. As usual it was both fun and informative (mixed in with plenty of “I’d love to order…”). I am writing in particular to inquire if you could forward my contact to Louise Orlando. She mentioned in her “Born Free Redux” article a 9-page list of equipment and parts they used to prepare for their trip. My wife and I are planning some trips and that list struck me as a good resource for future reference. We will have to wait a while as our daughters are only 3 years old and 6 months old. We have a ’66 Series II-A 109” and planning to drive to the Gaspe Peninsula as a trial trip in the next few years, then incorporating the experience into planning and driving to Alaska some summer. Ultimately, when I retire, I want to drive around the world. Ambitious for certain but articles like Louise’s give me inspiration and hope. Paul Hai Newcomb, NY [We’ve forwarded your contact information to Louise Orlando, but why wait until you retire? Families pack their kids into sailboats for worldwide journeys all the time; your two daughters will love the 109” –ed.] Dear Rovers North, I have just finished reading your summer magazine and I do enjoy getting it and reading all the articles. I have had a long association with Land Rovers. I used to haul hay balers and demonstrate them in the 1950s using Series Is. In the 1960s, I used to use them in the interior of British

Columbia where our maps only showed mountain tops, rivers and the rest as unexplored territory. Of course there were lots of roads, you just didn’t know where they went but the ranchers used them. I have a 1961 Series II 88” (I have purchased parts from you) with a Koenig winch. I use the winch to pull in trees for fuel wood but it does not seem to have a great deal of pulling strength. I tried adjusting it according to the Koenig bulletin 1459 but it seems beyond me. I have rebuilt the Land Rover but the winch defeats me. In reading your article “Born Free Redux” the same winch pulled up a tipped over Land Rover from a steep bank. How does one increase the pulling power? We had a 100 ft. 1 inch nylon rope in British Columbia in 1961; using a capstan winch it would pull anything. Could one of your mechanics help me or could you put a request in the magazine for help? Brian Thompson Bent River, Ontario CANADA [A capstan winch can seem to have endless pulling power because it operates off the engine rpm, and because it feels infinitely adjustable depending upon the length and diameter of its rope. In actuality, there are practical limits. Every drum winch has a rated pulling capacity. If you’ve adjusted the winch according to the factory specifications, your Koenig winch looks like Lousie’s, it’s driven by the engine. You are either operating it at too low RPMS or its clutch is slipping prematurely and needs to be adjusted. –ed.] Dear Rovers North, Any chance I qualify for a coveted Rovers North mug for finding a great typo in the Summer 2008 edition of The Rovers North News? Brought a smile to my face! Matthew Gross, Capt, USAF Stewardstown, PA [No, it’s not really a Sighting, but it brought embarrassment to our collective faces. We are pleased you read the magazine so carefully, though –ed]. Dear Les, Thank you for your help over the years. My RHD 109” runs on parts from Rovers North. Paul Von Klosst-Dohna Thousand Oaks, CA [Thanks for the exciting ride on the Poison Spider Trail in Moab! We are delighted to assist any enthusiast in maintaining their Land Rovers. Congratulations on a stunning 109” SW –ed.] Dear Rovers North, I was Googling (if that’s a word) for some parts and your prices were best. You even beat out my local Rover shop despite shipping, so you’ll be hearing more from me. Jeff MacEwen [In the last issue of the Rovers North News, Calef Letorney explained how Rovers North could assure the best pricing in his article The Renaissance. Thanks for noticing! –ed].

Who Are the New Enthusiasts? Story by: Jeffrey B. Aronson Photos by: Blackmore/Ameridane

“Hey mister, can we play in your truck?” The question came to me from a boy and a girl while I mowed the lawn of the house their families had rented for vacation. The kids were picking wild blueberries along the shore of this island when they saw me stop for a moment. “Sure,” I said, “just don’t touch the key.” They scampered off and I continued with my caretaking work. When I needed to get fuel for the mower, I walked around the house to the II-A. There I found 4 kids immersed in their fantasy inside the Rover. One sat behind the steering wheel. Two others in the front seat shouted instructions to avoid incoming enemy fire. The remaining kid in the rear had already figured out how to lower the jump seats and perform backseat driver tasks. Lucas Adams-Blackmore, Norwich, VT, age 9, served as the driver and had already noticed that his name, “Lucas,” was engraved on the windshield wiper casing in front of him. He asked why and I told him of the legend of Joseph Lucas and Company. His sister, Lea, age “6 and a half,” assisted him from the rear jump seat. Kate GodsilFreeman, Brooklyn, NY, age 9, and her sister, Rebecca, age 6, rounded out the adventure crew. I suggested that someone could serve as a scout by sitting on the spare tire on the hood; as I turned to return to work, one of them scampered onto the hood. The job took me into the early evening. When I carried my equipment to the Land Rover, the kids were still engrossed in their game. I suggested that it might be time for me to leave; their distress was evident. My offer to take them all for ice cream, pending parental approval, received high acclaim. Anyone can spill ice cream in my Rover. During the summer months I met a few dozen kids at the houses where I serve

as a caretaker. None of them yawned at the Land Rover – they all seemed transfixed. These kids never saw Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom or Daktari on television, never heard the song “Born Free,” never watched The Gods Must Be Crazy at the movies. Their extreme adventures involve BMX bikes, skateboards, video games and movies; they had no direct contact with Land Rovers. I also discovered that generations that grew up with Range Rover Classic or P-38A, Discovery I or II, had imbued those vehicles with a cachet similar to those who grew up with original Land Rover Series cars or Defenders. Regardless of their age or experience with Land Rovers, they understood the marque values represented by Land Rover: individualism, authenticity, freedom, adventure, guts and supremacy. Land Rover has never been a price leader; it takes some financial willpower to secure a Land Rover. It has made an extraordinary impact with relatively few models and vehicles; over 60 years, General Motors has lost more cars than Land Rover has manufactured. Nonetheless, it continues to appeal to men and women of all generations. The new enthusiasts will come from the elemental appeal of the Land Rover as described by David E. Davis, Jr., the long time editor of Car & Driver and Automobile Magazine. “I know that it’s a perfectly useful daily driver for commuting business people and professionals and I know that it delivers kids to school just as well as any minivan, but I still believe that its natural habitat is dirt roads, rocky trails and old buildings that smell like guns and dogs. I just can’t get over the feeling that every Land Rover should spend most of its life dirty.”

The Rumble in the Jungle Story & Photos by Louise Orlando and Andrew Barbour

Part III

H

[Louise Orlando and Andrew Barbour, Cape Charles, VA, took their 1960 Series II from London to Capetown 15 years ago. Parts I and II appeared in our Summer and Fall issues. Part III recounts their struggles from Senegal through Zaire –ed.]

aving survived the perils of the Sahara, we retired to the beach near Dakar, Senegal, for a period of R&R. Then, after stocking up on supplies and spare parts, we headed east into remote, forgotten country. A hundred miles from Senegal’s coast, paved roads all but ceased again and we forged a passage along rocky tracks, sand paths, and goat trails. We frequently became lost amid the sere, brown Sahel as the track petered out or splintered into multiple trails. At the end of the day, we would simply pull over into the bush and set up camp. Crossing Mali, we felt like true explorers, out on our own in the remotest regions of the continent, sometimes meeting locals who, it seemed, had never seen whites before. All that changed once we reached Ouagadougou, in Burkina Faso. From there, graded—even paved—roads carried us south into Togo, and then east into Benin, Nigeria, and Cameroon. Apart from in the Cameroon highlands, driving through these countries was comparatively easy, if you don’t count the dozens of military checkpoints at which bribes were invariably solicited. Although the driving had become easier, our health was beginning to suffer. Andrew contracted malaria and amoebic dysentery at the same time in Cameroon. I came down with malaria just a week later as we tracked lowland gorillas in the Central African Republic. And, although we didn’t know it at the time, we were both infected with brucellosis, a bizarre cow disease (contracted from unpasteurized milk) that left us feeling weak and shaky. The Land Rover had its own undiagnosed illness: The brakes were failing. Ordinarily, we would have simply pulled the brake drums to take a look, but the brake shoes were brand spanking new. After Andrew had bled the hydraulic lines and adjusting the brakes to

The brakes through the leafy canopy, You have to stop!” don’t work!” I screamed, as I barely illuminating the dirt pushed my foot harder on the track. We led in the Land pedal, hoping for a Fred Flintstone moment that would enable me to stop with my feet. Meanwhile, the soldiers had unshouldered their weapons. Andrew stuck his head out the window, waving his arm and yelling in French that we were trying to stop. As we reached the soldiers, Andrew pulled the emergency brake, bringing us to a clattering halt some 30 yards past the checkpoint. I was shaking like a leaf. The men approached Andrew’s window with their automatic rifles raised. They took one look at my quaking hands and sweating face and began to laugh. French was exchanged. Andrew won’t tell me exactly what they said, but I think it had something to do with letting a woman drive. They waved us on. The brake failure wasn’t my fault, but I couldn’t dismiss the thought that I had nearly got us killed. I refused to drive the car again until we had fixed the brakes. As we prepared to enter Zaire two months later, the brake problem was still not resolved. The only way to stop the car was by pumping the brake eight times very fast. To reach East Africa (and a new master cylinder), we now had to navigate a winding, 1,000-mile route across the northern tip of the old Belgian Congo. To all intents, Zaire is one big jungle: hot, humid, and crawling with bugs. And it has completely fallen apart. Having no brakes was no way to begin the most difficult stretch of our journey. Brakes or no brakes, we weren’t going to brave Zaire alone. We had planned a rendezvous with some other overlanders at Bangui, in the Central African Republic. None of us made it on time: one English couple in a Defender lost their nerve and shipped their car to Cape Town; another English 22

Rover, slowly negotiating the ruts and tree roots that obstructed the path. It was painstaking work, made worse by the fact that our brakes were failing miserably. Andrew couldn’t stop the car fast enough, and we repeatedly slammed into holes with a force that rattled our teeth and threatened to snap our springs. Our little convoy hadn’t traveled more than three miles down the track before we were forced to halt at a wooden bridge spanning a swampy stream 25 feet below. To describe this sagging construction as a bridge may be overstating matters. It consisted simply of four or five tree trunks, hacked from the surrounding bush and laid lengthwise across a 30foot span. They weren’t joined in any way, nor were they secured at either end. They were simply round, rotting logs, plunked down helter-skelter in the middle of the jungle. Huge gaps loomed between them.

Given my fear of heights, I took one look at the bridge and my head started to spin; black spots appeared before my eyes. The dense green jungle felt as if it were closing in on me; bugs whined in my ears. I thought I was going to pass out. “Louise! Stop looking down,” shouted Andrew. “Take a deep breath. Think about the Land Rover!” Andrew was working to snap me out of my terror. He was right. I needed to think about the car. Since I had given up driving until the brakes were fixed, it was my job to guide Andrew across the bridge. Thank goodness for our Cooper tires, with their aggressive treads. I was now counting on those treads and Andrew’s ability to pump the brakes quickly to get safely across the bridge. One false move and it would be goodbye forever. “You’re going to need a little extra gas to get onto the bridge,” I told Andrew, as I prepared to guide him over, inch 23

There is a major hole on the right.” huge front blew in from the east and the sky simply liquefied. Andrew put his foot on the gas and climbed onto the An inch of rain fell in the first few minutes, and the storm never bridge. I felt the logs vibrate. My stomach churned. “Okay, relented. For the first time, we seriously began to doubt if we now, go to the left just a little,” I said. “I need to get you around would ever make it out of Zaire. We had been in the country that hole.” Using my hands, I motioned him forward and to the nearly a week and we had gone a total of 50 miles. And now left. It was revolting work: groveling chest-high in putrid swamps to build platforms for high-lift jacks, erecting supports for rotten logs, and cutting trees to fill gaping holes. It took us three hours to get the Bedford across that first bridge, and we didn’t set any speed records on the remaining 55. In the clinging rain forest heat, the exertion often left us drained and sweat-soaked. If we had just crossed a clean-flowing river, we would hack a path through the jungle down to the bank, check for crocodiles, and plunge in. That first day we traveled 6 miles. By the end of the second day we had added another 13. That left us only 981 miles to go. Our progress was spectacularly slow but the heavy rains, which usually started at this time of year, had stayed away. We had been told that under no circumstances should we attempt to cross Zaire after the rains had begun. Apparently, nothing— 24

like a torpedoed ship. The entire front right side of the car lifted into the air, the wheel spinning freely. We were going down. Andrew was horrified to find that his face was only a foot from the surface of the pond. Brown water poured through his door, puddling around the clutch, while muddy slop oozed up through the gear-shift housing. Meanwhile, I was hanging high above him, held in place by my seat belt. I couldn’t have gotten out if I had wanted to. Andrew leaned on the horn and we saw heads poke out of the side of the Bedford. The three men came racing back to help. One tried to prevent the left side from tipping further, while the other two jumped on the front right in a vain effort to bring the wheel down. Andrew hit the gas but only succeeded in sending up a spray of mud and water. Three locals abandoned their bicycles and also clambered onto the bumper. The car slowly began to right itself. Andrew pressed the accelerator again. The Land Rover shuddered, hesitated, and finally crawled out of the slop.

I didn’t think it was possible but, as we moved further south, the jungle became even thicker. We couldn’t see more than 10 feet on either side, and the jungle often spilled into the track itself. The storm had brought down dozens of huge trees, and our pace slowed to a crawl as we chopped our way through with axes and machetes. Pygmies, with filed teeth and wearing only loin cloths, would appear out of the jungle, cradling home-made axes on their shoulders, and chop in return for cigarettes or salt. It could take us more than an hour to clear away a tree, only to find another one a hundred yards further on. By nightfall we were often too exhausted to cook a proper dinner. We were covered in mud, smelled, and our muscles ached from the constant chopping. The jungle was usually too dense to allow us to pull off the road and camp. Instead, we would drive to a village—ragged affairs of 10 or 15 reed huts set in a small clearing—and ask the chief for permission to stay. 25

After nearly two weeks of back-breaking work, we emerged from our little track to join one of Zaire’s primary transport arteries. We thought the worst was behind us. We were wrong. Ahead of us, between the towns of Wamba and Nia Nia, lay what we were later told was one of the worst stretches of bogholes in Zaire. Bogholes are a uniquely Zairian phenomenon, not to be confused with potholes. A boghole is capable of completely swallowing two semis. They get started when a truck becomes mired in mud, spins its wheels, and digs itself a hole. The only way out of the hole is to dig some more. Another truck then drives into this hole and repeats the process. Months and years later, you’re looking at a boghole that can be 50 yards long and 20 feet deep. When it rains, these holes fill up with water and slop. It’s very ugly. Zairian trucks get stuck in bogholes for days at a time, and traffic comes to a standstill until they get out. Trucks line up, one behind the other, waiting for their own turn to get stuck. Many of them travel in convoy just so they can pull each other out of bogholes. It’s quite a sight to round a bend and come upon four trucks, all chained together, engines howling, and the jungle blue with diesel smoke.

26

Traveling in a Land Rover, we were spared the worst of the bogholes. Small cars could often take a short detour, following narrow tracks through the jungle. These detours were easily as terrifying as the main bogholes, but at least you didn’t risk drowning. The tracks were so slippery that Andrew could have thrown the steering wheel out the window for all the good it did. Careening through these overgrown paths, the car bounced off tree trunks and submerged logs like a crazed pinball. Unfortunately, there was not always an alternate route for smaller vehicles, and we would then have to take our turn in the boghole. Mud was not the issue. Driving in low range through mud, our Land Rover practically purred like a contented kitten. The biggest problem we faced was the ruts produced by the trucks. Their big wheels would bury deep into the muck, leaving a high central crown. We didn’t have the clearance to pass over these crowns, nor could we always get away with the trick of driving with one tire in the rut and the other on top of the crown. In such cases, we had only one choice: Use the winch to drag our Land Rover the length of the boghole.

We quickly learned that this was a two-person job: I would assortment of automatic weaponry was spread out on the clamber onto the front of the Land Rover to operate the winch, ground by the guard house. A few miles further on, another while Andrew controlled the revs from inside and steered. This checkpoint was decorated in macabre style: The skull of a arrangement wouldn’t have been so bad if cables were guaranrebel, impaled on a stick, grinned out at passersby. Soldiers teed not to snap. Before we left the States, though, I saw a pichad dressed the skull in a sky-blue beret, angled jauntily ture of a guy’s car after his winch cable broke, tearing the across the forehead. When one of our rear wheels snagged on a rock, the cable shuddered and the winch lever kicked in my hand. I ducked, heart pounding in my ears, but I kept the winch turning. Slowly, our Land Rover slid and clawed its way out of the boghole back onto the road. It was around this time that our brakes began to sing, and we realized that the mechanic had been dead wrong all those months ago. Our brand-new brake pads were gone. Toast. The ear-splitting falsetto we were hearing was the sound of metal on metal. Luckily for us, we were now close to an old Belgian colonial town, which still boasted a mission and a mechanic— and a bar!! It took two days for our brakes to be repaired. We camped out in the shop compound surrounded by old cars and visited frequently by the owner’s pet chimpanzee. We had ample time to scrape the mud out of the car, check the fluid levels, and perform minor repairs. Although the place was unbelievably grubby, it was like an oasis—a safe haven with cold beer only steps away. As we neared Zaire’s eastern border with Uganda, we found more and more roadblocks manned by heavily armed soldiers. The civil war in nearby Rwanda accounted for some of the military buildup, but it was more likely a response to a rebellion that had flared in the east in January and been crushed. Scariest of all was an army checkpoint that blocked our way across a major bridge in the Virunga National Park, no more than 20 miles from Uganda. 2008 Land Rover National Rally Story and Photos by Matt Martin

34

It’s 3am on September 15th and with about 1 hour of sleep, I’m standing out in the parking lot of my apartment watching Steve Haskell pull up. We are on our way to the airport to catch a flight to attend our very first Solihull Society event; the Land Rover National Rally. Nevermind that this was our first time attending the event, but this was our first time that we would be in Moab, Utah. We had many people telling us what to expect, but until you get out there and experience it for yourself, you have no idea. It’s simply breathtaking. As we drove in our rented Pontiac Grand Prix from Salt Lake City, the only word we could come up with was WOW. Yes I said Grand Prix. Apparently, you cannot rent Land Rovers in Salt Lake City. As amazing as Moab is, what we found even more amazing was how genuinely friendly each and every Land Rover enthusiast was. We never had any problem ditching our rental and finding a ride with one of the many enthusiast in attendance. Nothing proved this more to us than on Tuesday morning at 8am. We were standing in the parking lot of our hotel, admiring a beautiful Defender 110, when we were approached by Mike and Cyndy Boggs. It just so happened that this was their Defender and they were heading out to Arches National Park. After talking with them for a few minutes, they asked us to spend the day with them off-roading through the park. It turns out, a Defender 110 is a great way to see this park. Being able to go places where most cannot is the only way to really appreciate all that Arches National Park has to offer. After spending an amazing day with Mike and Cyndy, we made our way over to the registration building to officially sign up for the rally. The authentic comradeship of every Land Rover enthusiast was shown to us throughout the rest of the event as well. As each morning started, we always had people offering us rides. Such as Douglas Evilsizor (LRL Magazine) in his 2006 LR3, Tye Hansen and his 1996 Discovery I, Gustaf Kupetz and Nate Kennedy (arlFOUR.com) diving Gustafs Defender 110, Barry & Lori Ellis in their Discovery II and many more.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank the Solihull Society for hosting such an amazing event in such a breathtaking place. Both Steve and I will never forget the great time we had off-roading in just about every kind of Land Rover all over Moab. But even more than that, we would like to thank them for hosting such an event that attracts some genuinely great people. We are truly looking forward to next year.

A Road Trip to With Mark, Calef, & Graham Letorney Part 1: Water Pump Slump My father and I were driving south to represent Rovers North at the Mid Atlantic Rally, when we received a call from my younger brother Calef. Mid whitewater kayaking trip he was left motionless and in need of a water pump. This came as little surprise as Calef has had a ... well ... laborious relationship with “The Lucky Lady,” his ex-MOD 3-door 110 Tdi. That's not to say that they are without love, far from it. Readers will recall tales of glorious river crossings, adventures in remote locales and many starry nights. Unfortunately their affair has been punctuated by blowouts and breakdowns: a scorched differential here and a defective transmission or two there. So you could say we are fairly accustomed to Calef’s cellular communication from the break down lane. The malfunction was serendipitous, as my father and I felt understaffed to represent Rovers North at the MAR. Calef was on route about two hours away, so the ill-fated kayak trip was cut short and the Rovers North away team became one stronger. With the Lucky Lady parked out of harms way, we loaded Calef’s camping equipment and iPod into my father’s Defender 130 and continued our journey. We left New England during peak foliage, traversing south and west to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Mid Atlantic Rally, 2008. Part 2: Sun and Fun with Land Rovers This year's MAR was held at the Oak Ridge Estate, some 5,000 acres with 40 miles of trails in scenic Nelson County, Virginia. It was an ideal location for a Land Rover event and base camp was very well set up. Staged around a beautiful one-mile horseracing track, it encompassed the event's campgrounds, vender row, the Rovers North RTV trials course, a Land Rover teeter-totter and the main tent. The close proximity created the perfect atmosphere of Rovering and socializing. Standing atop our truck, you could see old friends sharing a beer in the campground, the RTV trials course

Story & Photos by Graham Letorney

action and Bill Burke’s technical demonstrations next to the big tent. It was a superbly enjoyable event with great stories from the many trail rides and spectacular weather. Part 3: A Southern Tradition The Rover Owners Association of Virginia [ROAV] organized a Fox Hunt demonstration at the Oak Ridge Estate Mansion for the event staff and sponsors. Constructed at the turn of the 19th century, the initially humble farmhouse was later improved into a lavish mansion, including a formal Italian garden, rotunda greenhouse and private railroad station. After hor d'oeuvres, The Oak Ridge Fox Hunt Club descended on the mansion with blowing horns and barking hounds. They approached on horseback; the Huntsmen and Whippers-in, dressed in red petty-coats lead by the Master of Fox Hounds, Rita Mae Brown in the coveted confederate grey Hunts Master coat. While her team laid the scent, Rita spoke of the history of foxhunting in Virginia and her club, which has been hunting the Estate since the late 1880s. Then she set the dogs on the fox scent and the hunt began. Despite the fact that there was no fox to hunt, as it was only a demonstration, the dogs howled chased at full speed with the Whippers-in on the flanks keeping them collected. The crowd was delighted by the time-honored tradition that played out in the glow of sunset on the magnificent estate; it was a real treat. Part 4: The Road North After the awards ceremony, we began the long road home, trading stories of old friends and new ones and the many wonderful Land Rovers we had seen. Although it wasn't said, we all understood that events like MAR make Land Rover ownership truly special; it is all about the community and we feel fortunate to be a part of something so amazing. Happy trails, and hats off to the ROAV team!

Happy 60th Birthday Land Rover

the Rover Company introduced its new Land-Rover at the Amsterdam Motor Show. This was a must-do for Rover; a company that did not even have an Export Department had to meet governmental demands to “export or die.” British journalists mirrored the enthusiasm of overseas buyers. The Autocar noted “there is now something to be described which can either be a private car able to perform many most valuable duties other than sheer transport, or as a general purpose countryside worker which is also capable of providing comfortable and efficient transport. …If the world has to be strictly economical for years to come, is not this the sort of car that most of us need, one that is entirely practical and essentially usable? Its appearance is starkly practical; there is nothing of the luxury vehicle about its looks. Nevertheless, it 46

is not ugly and has a distinctively attractive in appearance all its own. So much has been said and written n the past about the so-called People’s Car, much of it nonsense, that the advent of a really practical British vehicle which goes far beyond that over-publicized proposal should be met with genuine acclamation.” Motor complimented Rover for “displaying an enterprise which should be well rewarded, and there is no doubt that a big market, both at home and abroad, exists for a machine such as the Land Rover. Rover hoped to sell 5,000 of them in 1948; 8,000 orders poured in that first year. By 1951 Land-Rovers outsold Rover cars by a 2:1 margin; indeed, production would not meet sales orders until the 1970’s. Land Rover not only created “the world’s most versatile vehicle” with its Series I-II-III models, it designed and created

the first luxury SUV with the Range Rover in 1970 (Jeep Wagoneers, IH Scouts and Ford Broncos were really just modified trucks). If not always first with innovative automobiles, Land Rover got it right when they created the 90 and 110 models begining 1983. The Discovery first appeared in 1989 and changed the playing field for the accessible SUV. When Land Rover proved so valuable that it split off from its parent, Rover, it still never forgot how to build a car when it created the Freelander in 1997. None of these models lost their cachet as a “go-anywhere, do-anything” vehicle. Each Land Rover offered something special to owners, workers and enthusiasts. The retroactively named Series I began with an 80” wheelbase and a 1595 cc engine – nimble, tough, and hugely capable off-road. While in production for 10 years, the length of the “regular” model grew to 86” and then

88”, while the long wheelbase models would grow from 107” to 109”. The engine would pick up some extra power when it grew to 1997 cc. Whether soft top or station wagon, the starkly functional Series I quickly became England’s signature car outside of the UK. A decade is an eternity in automobile production, so when Rover turned its attention to upgrading their Land Rover, the familiar barrel roll sides and rounded fender lines heralded the Series II. Within a short time, the first-ever diesel (2052 cc) appeared. With the advent of the Series II-A in 1961, the diesel would share its block with the 2286cc (2.25L) engine that remained in production through 1985. Available in 88” and 109” wheelbases, it came as a pickup, a station wagon, a hardtop or a “convertible.” Two special versions of the 109” wheelbase would become Forward Control (II-A and II-B) 47

models, cab-forward trucks that used the slightly larger 2600 cc Rover 6-cylinder engine. While fire tenders, mobile welders, farm implement carriers and tow truck versions had been in production for many years, the Dormobile [camper] now would take you anywhere in self-contained comfort. Land Rover also offered a 12-passenger version of its 109” station wagon, perfect for a dozen very close friends or family. While establishing itself as the most capable vehicle on earth, Land Rover’s engineers – particularly Spen King, Tom Barton and Geof Miller- wanted to expand a Rover’s capabilities. In 1970, their answer took the form of the Range Rover. Using their newly purchased and enhanced 3.5 liter V-8, long travel coil springs and a Louvre award winning design, the Range Rover redefined the 4x4. Land Rover made the car more luxurious, more powerful and more refined over the next 26 years, but the essential qualities of the model remained intact. Yet the same initial powertrain had such

Defender 90 NAS, soft top, hardtop and station wagon; enthusiasts continue to repair, revive and restore any Defenders they can find. Land Rover entered a new market for people carrier with its Discovery in 1989, an ideal transportation machine for families, yet as capable off-road as any Land Rover product. The first models came with 5-speed transmissions, but quickly came to share engines and powertrains with the Range Rover and Defender. This was the first high volume product for Land Rover; around 16,000 Discoverys entered the US in any year compared with 1,200 Defenders and 1,500 Range Rovers annually. In 1998, Land Rover stretched out the Discovery, upgraded the engine, transmission and suspension, and created the more lavish Discovery Series II. In 2004, following changes in Range Rover chassis design, Land Rover introduced the awkwardly named but significantly improved LR3 [still called the Discovery 3 in the UK]. The

strength that Land Rover could use it in the military oriented FC 101, in production from1971-1978. From 1968-1983 Land Rover also made a military Lightweight model [Series II-A and III], narrower, lighter and easily dismantled for air transport to remote battle locations. Meanwhile from 1971 – 1985, Rover upgraded the Series interior, provided an all-synchromesh transmission and kept abreast [barely] of safety, emissions, and consumer preferences through its Series III models. By then, the fractures within parent British Leyland and its successors and the strength of the pound sterling made the Land Rover a difficult sale in an international market. The answer was the coil sprung Land Rover 110 in 1983, followed two years later by the 90. In 1990 came a new diesel engine and a new name, Defender, and in 1994, 500 special models just for the North American market. From 1994 – 1997, we enjoyed the

current LR3, with its 4.4 liter, 300 hp, 315 ft-lbs torque, also features a monocoque body and four wheel independent suspension - without compromising off-road capability. Three rows of seats warrant three moonroofs, too, and significantly improved handling on pavement. The Range Rover, albeit stretched and kitted out, could continue right through 1996 before a new model, called the P-38A, entered the market in 1995. The new design brought the Range Rover up to contemporary standards of ride, handling and packaging for luxury SUVs. A bit anonymous and bland compared to the original, it featured hidden assets such as ABS, ETC and EAS. In 2001 [2002 in the US], Land Rover introduced the current Range Rover with a new shape, new engine, more opulent interior, unique headlamps, and a myriad of luxury features. When corporate parent Ford linked Land Rover and

48

Jaguar, the latter’s saloon engine technology helped the former’s off-road engine experience produce a magnificent new V8 petrol engine. In 2005, the Range Rover Sport, slightly smaller and definitely faster, hit the marketplace, joined soon after by a supercharged big brother. It used the chassis design of a shortened LR3 and more rounded bodywork to produce a 5-passenger vehicle that can overtake Porche Cayennes as well as rock-climbing at a walking pace. Land Rover responded to the pressure to build smaller vehicles with the Freelander, its second ever volume vehicle, in 1997. With a traverse engine, independent front and rear suspension, and high range only, the Freelander challenged the company’s engineers to make it off-road capable. They introduced the HDC [hill descent control] to make up for the lack of a low range off road, and ETC to help the car navigate

slippery situations. In 2007, the Freelander morphed into the LR2 [Freelander 2 in the UK]. It shares the Terrain Response system with its sibling and also features a gradient brake release to assist in uphill starts on slippery slopes. In the North American market, we’ve experienced only some of Land Rover’s successes over the past 60 years; its extraordinary diesels, modern Defenders, and commercial models have been ineligible for the US market for decades. We’re also never quite certain just who will adopt Land Rover next: we’ve gone from BMW to Ford, and now Tata of India, in just the past decade. The fact that it remains such a powerful icon of automotive excellence, from just two factories in England [Solihull and now Halewood] is a testament to its engineers, designers, assembly line workers and management. As enthusiasts, Rovers North wishes Land Rover well for the next six decades.

BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL By Jeffrey B. Aronson In Land Rover’s earliest decades, advertisements called it “Britain’s most versatile vehicle.” “Whatever the load, wherever you go, the Land Rover can take it.” “On the estate or on the farm, Land Rover was working for prosperity.” It was the vehicle that “makes light work of heavy duty.” 42 years after my Land Rovers left Solihull, it still performs a multiplicity of duties. On this windswept island off the coast of Maine, firewood for wood stoves is in demand. When a summer neighbor lost a huge branch off his old elm tree, I arrived with all the subtlety of a vulture eyeing roadkill. I could barely lift the 4-foot circumference pieces into the Rover, but I loaded it as high as possible with this valuable haul. When another job called for a few cubic yards of fill, I folded up the seats and spread a tarp over the rear tub. I then shoveled and shoveled in dirt until I had filled it up and took it to the job site. Dump runs of old lumber, sawn-off limbs, garbage and rubbish have all occupied the Rover. At times, people are actually happy to have me offer them a ride, such as when five visitors walked down a lonely lane in a pouring rain. Even the inside of my Series Rover looks inviting at a time like that. The Rover will also pull or tow as needed. Whether a fallen tree [I’m not that good at estimating where standing trees will fall] that needs to be yanked in another direction, or a boat that needs to be launched, or a car that requires a tow, the Series Rover makes short work of the task at hand. When it needs an adjustment or a repair, you can do it yourself. The timeless lines still attract attention for men and women of all ages. Yes, a modern 4 wheel drive pickup will accomplish the same, but it can only carry 7 people with a crew cab and a lot of patience on the part of passengers. It’s so heavy it will sink in the mud or dig up a field with too much torque. And then it’s so long that it can’t squeeze into small spaces, or tuck into that small slot on the deck of the local ferry. And it can’t be repaired without a computer diagnostic device and an IT degree. Now what part of “versatility” don’t they understand? There are Land Rovers that you step into with a certain aplomb. Writing in our last issue of his Range Rover Classic, Mike Koch remembered gazing at his girlfriend and saying “Shall we take the Range Rover?” Mike’s girlfriend seems to have agreed with him, whereas several of my girlfriends have opted to leave my presence instead. Perhaps it’s because where his request sounds like one coming from James Bond, mine sounds more like one from Austin Powers. Unfortunately, both of my ’66 Series Rovers, the QE I or the QM I, have the aplomb of Pigpen, the Peanuts’ character permanently encased in a cloud of dust. Not only are my Land Rovers the kind of vehicles that I can get into when dirty, mine are the Land Rovers that get you dirty when you get into them. Many years ago I called Rovers North with one of my innumerable questions; this time it was, “what is the black goop that comes off my steering wheel in damp weather?” Once the laughter died 52

down, Mark Letorney said “Dirt, Jeff. It’s dirt.” This statement revealed the circular nature of Land Rover ownership. Land Rovers wallow happily in dirt, which encourages owners to undertake dirty jobs, which requires maintenance of your Land Rover, which gets you dirty, which you then take inside the car with you. So while Range Rover owners might wonder which cologne or perfume to wear, a Series Land Rover owner like me wonders about hand cleaners. The best of them exude a pleasing odor that should attract the opposite sex while removing grease from one’s hands. The end result should be a cleaner steering wheel, too. Fast Orange gives off the odor implied by its name, although admittedly, it’s the orange of Tang or Trix rather than the citrus from the tree. GoJo resembles yogurt in color and consistency but not in odor. Given the amount of grease on my Land Rovers and my own ineptitude as a mechanic, neither product cleans me up that well. Sadly, I was born too late for “Whiz, Roadside Hand Cleaner,” a can of which I secured when our local hardware store emptied its upper floor of old goods. I can’t tell you the age of the can, produced by the R.M. Hollingsworth Company of Camden, NJ, but there is a color drawing of a 1912 car filled with smiling passengers, clearly happy that the driver had cleaned his hands with Whiz. Now I’ve taken a whiz at the side of the road but never cleaned my hands with Whiz. According to the instructions, I’ve missed something. “At once a luxury and a necessity, it may be used to cleanse the hands while making temporary repairs on the road. Sprinkle a liberal quantity on the hands and rub briskly until grease or dirt is removed. Then wipe them on a towel or piece of waste. Unexcelled when used as a Liquid Toilet Soap or a Shampoo Compound. It is prepared wholly from vegetable oils, is pleasant to use and leaves the skin soft as velvet.” Now I’m ready to get behind the steering wheel. As Austin Powers might say, “Baby, shall we take my Land Rover?” National pride once dictated that every state wanted to strut its stuff through a national ship fleet flying the flag of the home country. Even though transatlantic travel had become the mainstay of international airlines, The Queen Elizabeth 2 pridefully reminded the world that Britain could still construct an ocean liner. Built at a shipyard in Scotland, her keel was laid in 1965 and she entered her service as an ocean liner in 1969. In 1974 on April Fools Day, it stopped running. Or in the words of the Cunard Line, “whilst on a cruise from New York to San Juan,

a technical fault caused the propulsion machinery to shut down.” The ship lay disabled in the Caribbean. Florida television stations sent helicopters with reporters and cameramen to cover the misery of passengers forced to eat caviar and drink champagne. Cunard hired tugboats to tow the stricken vessel to Bermuda. As the then-owner of an MG Midget in daily use, I thought, “This sounds familiar – a British piece of machinery towed in for repairs.” Not long after I secured a Vermont license plate that read “QE IV” (that plate now adorns my Triumph TR-7). When I purchased my ’66 Series II-A SW 18 years ago, it became the “QE I.” In 2006, my second ’66 HT became the “QM I.” So it’s with sadness that I note that in November the QE 2 starts a new life as a floating hotel and entertainment center in Dubai. It’s as sad as watching blue water yachts sit at a marina, floating bars and cabins for their owners. What a waste of engineering and craftsmanship. Now the challenge is to make certain that a similar fate does not befall our beloved Series Land Rovers, Defenders, Range Rovers and Discoverys. Keep them in use, and on the road. 2008 represents the 60th anniversary of other significant automobiles beside our beloved Land Rovers. When Citroen decided it should make a people’s car for postwar France, their edict was that the car should permit a French farmer to wear his favorite chapeau as well as a basket of eggs – never broken. The result was the Citroen Deux Chevaux, their wonderfully corrugated “Tin Snail.” With its light weight, front wheel drive, simple construction but brilliant engineering, it became the favorite car of rural France. By the 1980’s it had grown into an urban statement car, too.

Morris Motors needed a postwar car that would appeal to the financially strapped public in Great Britain and developed the Morris Minor. With its monocoque construction and rack and pinion steering, it offered excellent handling, comforting styling and a comforting interior. 60 years later, they remain beloved in England and a perfect purchase for the sensible motorist today. Lotus Automobiles is stretching things a bit, but the cars that exemplified lightness as strongly as Land Rovers embodied ruggedness also want to celebrate their 60th anniversary. While we’re partying, wish the Austin-Healy Sprite (the other Bugeye) and the Rover P5 saloon a happy 50th anniversary, too. Younger but more tragic, British Leyland would have been celebrating their 40th anniversary had they survived their scrambled product mix, odd management decisions and surly worker relations. At least they worked hard to support the creation of the Range Rover, which in turn, brought a lot of luster to the parent corporation and gave us a wonderful automobile. As this issue will arrive in November, it’s a perfect time to send holiday wishes to Mark Letorney, Matt Martin and the Rovers North staff for all their professionalism and energy. Greetings, too, to correspondents Mike Koch, Tami Sutherland, Don Flye, Calef Letorney, Eric Evans, Jeremy Bergeron, Bob Rusnak, Christopher Berdy, Louise Orlando, Tom Lynch, Tom Johnson, and Jim Edson for their wonderful articles. Most importantly, best wishes to all readers for a terrific holiday season.

SIGHTINGS This has been one of the wettest years in New England in recent memory. The extra snow this winter, a soggy spring, rainy summer and now wet autumn, have made readers and viewers out of many Land Rover enthusiasts. So it’s no surprise that we received a big package of entries to this issue’s Sightings. Some Sighters noted this was their first Sighting, others came from veteran participants. It’s good for everyone to review the rules again: Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in a distinctive way. Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won’t surprise us, either, and thus we can’t award you a mug. We’re delighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in off orad magazines, British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. You shouldn’t be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways to get a coffee mug. Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication, we close off the Sightings. If we’ve mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we might not mention it again. If you’re new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Welcome aboard and send us your new Sightings. Rule #4 - We’re not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, one mug per Sighting per issue. Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits. Rule #6 - Psst... if we can’t read you name and address because of atrocious penmanship, we can’t recognize your Sighting nor send you a mug. Psst... E-mail submissions - remember we can’t send a mug by e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might make an error. Let us know if you think you’ve been jobbed, but all decisions of the Editor are final.

The New York Times once claimed it included “all the news that’s fit to print,” which now has stretched to quirky automobiles and their owners. A great piece appeared on enthusiast Geoffrey Good of Brooklyn, NY, who uses his Series II-A 109” as daily transportation in the urban jungle. Dennis Stierer, Lockport, NY, Lois Goetz, Venice, FL, and Ryan Smith, Montclair, NJ sent in notice of the article. The next James Bond film is called Quantum of Solace [huh?!] and once again, exploding Land Rovers receive a lot of attention in the movie. John Derosa, Fairfield, CT, Randy Kremer, Paramus, NJ, and Michael Libott, Burbank, CA, saw the trailers. Jenna Morris, Liburn, GA, noted that a Series Rover appears briefly in the movie Journey to the Center of the Earth, but the characters walk instead of using the Rover. Young Chloe Miller [see rule #6] spotted a Land Rover in the poster for the movie Madagascar. Anything that appears in print always looks better with a Land Rover present in the article. Tommi Merrin, Mount Vernon, OH, noted when that Cottage Living magazine wrote an article about architect Bill Ingram’s country home, they included a shot of his Discovery. Shawn LaClair [see rules #2 and #6] noted that Vanity Fair included a spectacular ad for the Range Rover in the March 2008 issue. Jeffrey Austin, Chesapeake, VA, noted a Range Rover on the ICOM UK website. Advertisers do know the impact of a Land Rover. RedOxx Mfg produced a “Safari Travel Luggage” line and, of course, put a vintage Land Rover into their ads, reports Croley Graham, Franklin, TN. Karen Sindir, 62

Woodland Hills, CA, notes that when Blockbuster needed to promote the new Indiana Jones movie, they produced a T-shirt with a Defender and the slogan “Indiana Jones – Archaeology Since 1935.” Andy Iverson, Bennett, CO, thinks he saw a Range Rover or a LR3 in a promo for Babylon. Dolce and Gabbana produce high-end, high style clothing that takes some nerve to wear, so they used a customized Defender in their latest magazine ads, notes Frank Dauerer, San Clemente, CA, and Nathan Purney, Alexandria, VA. Herb Engdahl, Cave Creek, AZ, noted that a television commercial there for an alpaca breeders group included a Range Rover – probably to make the Alpacas looks better. Orvis has featured Land Rovers in their general catalogue but one Rover, a D90, made its first appearance in the Orvis Dog catalogue. Jamie Thompson, Pine Bush, NY and Steven Walls [see rule #6 above] spotted the Rovers. Kelty Tents features a Land Rover on their website, notes Michael Libott, Burbank, CA. Vitamin Water ran an ad in ESPN Magazine featuring NBA stars camping in a Defender 110. David Matlock, Lebanon, MO, caught the ad. William Kendall, Centreville, VA, found the word “Land Rover” in text only in the Duluth Trading Post catalogue. When PBS’s Voyages of Discovery followed an expedition in to the mountains of Peru, they did so in a Defender 90, reports Dick Newton, Charlestown, RI [see Rule #6] Susannah Via [see Rule #6] spotted a Land Rover Series diesel chugging up the side of a mountain in the Planet Green networks Off the Grid with Les Stroud. Land Rovers are also shown at work as Zimbabwean police cars in an Investor Daily article, says Greg Haugen, Fargo, ND. Tom Proctor [see rule #2] found a BBC photo of Prince Harry at work in Namibia, digging out sand from around a grounded LR3. Mike Pattarozzi, Highlands Ranch, CO, so enjoyed “Dear Prudence” because of its LR3 that he almost ignored the presence of star Jane Seymour. Carl Seashore, Chapel Hill, NC, spotted several Defenders in an episode of Mythbusters. Chris Whybrew, Broken Arrow, OK, found a Land Rover green oval sticker on the rear of Land Rovers taking Georgian troops into battle. 40 Degrees 74 Degrees is the magazine of the Jersey Shore, and Allan Brown, Jackson, NJ, sent us an article on the essentials of tailgating at football games. Their tailgate of choice – a Range Rover HSE. Angela Huggins, Vancouver, WA, found a great article on the necessity of off roading in Africa in Adventist World magazine. Dick Newton, Charlestown, RI, read up on an archaeological expedition in Spain and noted a photo of a Santana in The Westerly Sun. Tom Harrison, Woodbury, CT, found a mention of Macy’s mall store in Connecticut Magazine that featured a photo of a fashionable mother and son in a topless Series Rover. Mike Green, Two Rivers, AK, wanted us to know about life in Alaska so he send in a newspaper clipping of the time a bear went one-on-one against a 2002 Land Rover. D. Townsend, Wellsboro, PA, send a copy of the same article which he headlined as “Rovers 1, Bear 0.” John Derosa, Fairfield, CT, watched a Science Channel show on GPS devices and reports a video clip included a Defender 90 on a city street. Coverage of the Tour de France included a quick shot of an LR3, reports James Carr, Elk Grove, CA. Kristin Minner, Carnation, WA, spotted Defenders on the Discovery show Killer Ants. On the Discovery Channel’s Josh Bernstein in the Unknown, Ronnie Massie, Franklin, NC, watched the host climb Mt. Etna in a Defender 110 SW. Dave Bowman, Orange, VA, watched the season premiere of Bones in which a Freelander is fished out of a river. The police are driving a Discovery Series II. A black Range Rover also appeared on the series premiere of Fringe, reports Dave. On Law and Order - Criminal Intent, Allan Brown, Jackson, NJ, watched a Range Rover Sport on the screen.

Perhaps seeing the error of its ways, REI has returned to including Rovers in their catalogues, notes Douglas Dietsche, Long Valley, NJ, Jamil Abbasy, Longmeadow, MA and Jarrad Elliott, Goffstown, NH. Albert Moore, East Hallsville, TX, James Pritchard, Midland, TX, Andrew Turner, El Paso, TX, and Mark Fails, Palmyra, PA, noted that Burger King has a new commercial showing a stranded hiker being rescued by a Defender 110 NAS and his Steakhouse Burger. Mountain Dew ties the famous Jack Hannah and a Land Rover together in a recent television ad, reports Sam Conder, Cumming, GA. Our C-List celebrity report this time includes Christian Bale, exiting a Range Rover HSE while being arraigned in court on domestic violence charges, notes Chris Whybrew, Broken Arrow, OK. Just like Land Rovers themselves some Land Rovers in ads go on forever. Greg Akin, Abilene, TX, noted that Farmers Insurance continues to use Land Rovers in its ads, this time on Telemundo. James Pritchard, Midland, TX, Loic Fabro, Herndon, VA, Chris Whybrew, Broken Arrow, OK, Jeremy Bergeron, Colorado Springs, CO, Killian Corbett, Missoula, MT, Brian Vance, Colorado Springs, CO, Andrew Turner, El Paso, TX, and Dendy Jarrett, Nashville, TN, spotted the Mobil 1 commercial featuring a Defender in the desert. Kohls continues to use ads featuring Land Rovers, most recently a Defender in their sales flyer, reports Shannon Shanks, Springfield, IL and James Pitts, Dallas, GA. David Lane, Darien, CT, noted the TD Ameritrade ad on CNBC. Beretta continues to use Series Rovers in their catalogues, notes Steve Johnson, Johns Island, SC. Mike Green, Two Rivers, AK, notes that Transition lens still uses Land Rovers in their television ads. Yaesu mobile transmitters continues to use Defenders in ads for their products, notes Ray Strickland, Blue Hill, ME To our delight, we often receive odd Sightings. Julia Harris, Wilton, CT, Lyndon Nolan, Boise, ID, and Bill Tanner [see rule #6] reported that a “Sand Rover” appeared in a sand sculpture contest, as reported on

yahoo.com. In the Judge Dredd Land Rover vein, we thank Patrick Kleinman for informing us of Turtle Transit, the folks who make the Oscar Mayer Weinermobiles. They use Discovery Series II’s to construct Monsters for Monster.com. Steven Staheli, Goshen, UT, sent us a portion of the Utah Drivers Rule Book; in the section on towing vehicles, a line drawing of “what to do” includes a Series Land Rover as the vehicle being towed! We expect British royalty to use Land Rovers but Steve Garner, Columbus, MS, notes that the new king of Tonga also uses a Land Rover. Andrew Sanchez, Irving, TX, toured Times Square in New York and sent us a photo of Land Rover advertising on two enormous billboards. Geno St. Jarvi, Appleton, WI, sent a travel article on Chinon, France, with a great photo of a Land Rover at rest on a city street. Bill Ruttan, Palm Springs, CA, found an ad from British Aerospace [a former corporate parent of Land Rover] that features a lovely 88” soft top waiting for a corporate jet. We want to thank the following Sighters for sending in entries that sadly missed deadlines and appeared in recent issues: Don Smith, Galensburg, IL, Chris Wybrew, Broken Arrow, OK, Roy Agte [see rule #6], Matt Joyce, Chester, MD, William Prillaman, Irvington, VA, Mark Fails, Palmyra, PA, Heath McGuire, Summerville, GA, Michael Bondmass, Las Vegas, NV, Justin McMahon, St. Louis, MO, James Dargan, Plymouth, MA. Tami Sutherland, Grottoes, VA, Scott and Lori Peterson [see Rule #6, too], Corey Bowlin, Louisville, KY, Matt Joyce, Chester, MD, Jack Nardone, Hampton, NH, Kevin Fennessy, North Andover, MA, Lane Davis, Knoxville, TN, Peter Schram, Churubusco, IN, LTC Paul Duray, Rockville, MD, Berhard McMahon, Washington, DC, and Greg Chait [see Rule #6]. And we need to recognize Steve Johnson, Johns Island, SC, who submitted a J.L. Powell sighting in time for our summer issue, but was omitted from our listings. A mug is on the way.

Rovers North Radiator Muffs

Originally designed to combat the sandy dust of the Sahara Desert, Mantec’s Raised Air Intake ensures a cleaner air supply to your engine when driving in dusty conditions. Made of zinc-phosphated steel and black polyester-coated (paintable to match body color). Used in everything from the Camel Trophy to the G4 Challenge. Includes hardware and fitting instructions.

In the snowbelt, this simple accessory will make a big difference in a Land Rover’s winter performance. By controlling the airflow through the radiator in freezing weather, the engine can run at its optimum operating temperature. This means reduced engine wear and increased heater output.
