ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The Aluminium Federation of South Africa (AFSA), is one of the world’s most active aluminium industry associations.

It has, since 1981, been involved in increasing the awareness and use of aluminium in South Africa. As the voice of and the gateway to the South African Aluminium industry, AFSA offers its members a wide variety of services, notably technical information and advice, education, training, skills upgrading, market industry and business development support, accompanied by access to a range of publications. The aluminium industry in South Africa continues to be a significant contributor to the economy by producing primary metal, secondary alloys, semifabricated profiles and rolled products, as well as downstream finished products.

AFSA will host the highly anticipated AFSA International Aluminium Conference and Exhibition (IACE) from 26 October to 27 October 2022, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, which is easily accessible to exhibitors and visitors and is close to hotels, the V&A Waterfront, and entertainment centres in the city. The conference aims to position the South African aluminium industry as a premium supplier to the continent and the world; and serves as a stepping-stone towards the vision of “Doubling Local Aluminium Demand by 2030”. This ambitious target of doubling demand remains attainable as we saw global demand for aluminium accelerate in recent years, and it is expected to reach 120 million by 2030. The main drivers are mainly

from the construction and packaging sectors, and it is undoubtedly likely to accelerate with the wave of urbanisation globally fuelling large-scale construction for habitats, mass transportation, communication infrastructure and packaging for food and beverages.

IACE is dubbed as “the premium global aluminium event of 2022”. Previously having taken place in 2016, the long-awaited second instalment of the AFSA International Aluminium Conference and Exhibition is anticipated to bridge the gap and reinforce relations between the local and international aluminium industry by hosting delegates from all over the world, in varying disciplines and industries. In addition, we have a full slate of speakers comprising local and international industry experts.

To maximise networking opportunities for attendees, IACE will feature three networking events:

• Guala Closures Group South Africa, site factory visit on Tuesday, 25 October 2022.

• Cocktail and prizegiving event on 26 October in the exhibition hall.

• A visit to several esteemed vineyards in both Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

“We are looking forward to hosting you at our event this October as we learn more about the South African aluminium industry.”

– said Muzi Manzi, CEO of AFSA.

Muzi Manzi is the Chief Executive Officer of the Aluminium Federation of South Africa (AFSA). He serves on the Conference Organising Team as the Conference Director of the AFSA International Aluminium Conference and Exhibition (IACE2022). He has extensive experience in organising international events after having facilitated the participation of South African companies in international and local shows. He has also attended a number of conferences and exhibitions globally. Supported by his dedicated team of experts, Muzi is responsible for the overall programme management of #IACE2022.

We purchase primary aluminium and supply a range of high value, niche rolled products and complex extrusions to manufacturers of finished products in South Africa and over 50 countries around the world. Hulamin’s largest activity is aluminium rolling with the balance comprising extruded products and other downstream products. Although the South African market is an important and growing element of our business, a significant portion of rolled products are exported to regions such as Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia.

Metal and Tool Trade (Pty) Ltd, (MTT) was founded in 1985 as a partnership between the M.J.C.Niemann Group of companies (NIEMET), Europe’s leading stockist and dealer of semi-finished products in non-ferrous metals, and Volker Schütte.

Since then MTT has grown to be the leading importer of semi-finished products in aluminium, copper and other copper alloys into South Africa. The main office and warehouse is in Kempton Park, Johannesburg with branches in Cape Town and representation in KZN. MTT has a wide range of standard stock items as well as customer specific products in warehousing throughout South Africa, from where MTT can supply the manufacturing industry with all its requirements in terms of non-ferrous metal semi-finished products. Not only does MTT import and stock semi-finished products, but at our Service Center we are able to process a variety of aluminium products and supply it cut to length or to size, depending on a customer’s exact requirements.

MXOLISI MAHLANGU

An honours student of Architectural Studies at the University of Cape Town, Mxolisi Mahlangu (born April 18, 1997), also known as Tennek, is a South African architectural designer, record producer, and visual artist. Passionate about creating experiences in buildings rather than mere spaces, Mxolisi began his architecture journey with a single motive in mind, “Build my family a decent house”.

Reserved and intellectual, this driven architect in training was born in the polar opposite high-energy city of Tshwane (Pretoria). His core intentions in studying architecture have always been influenced by the need to make a difference in underprivileged communities’ infrastructure, even by a small fraction as it has been a daily experience from his surroundings accompanied by thoughts of heavy compassion.

ABSTRACT

The idea of the aluminium-intensive structure aims to solve a fraction of the housing crisis in the country. It investigates alternative means of construction geared towards simplified solutions and outcomes. The structure utilizes hand-fixing methods as opposed to permanent fixing strategies such as welding. Because the material is of light steel nature, the structure explores portability through designing for easy assembling and easier dissembling should the need arise.

Due to aluminium’s high electrical and thermal conductivities, the envelope is finished to resist conductivity and the entire skin of the building forms a composite light technology of steel and internal insulation for thermal comfort… making the living experience desirable. Utilization of the strength to weight stiffness ratio enables the use of the material as the framing skeleton of the house.

Concentrating on aluminium as the primary design aspect, minor details such as skirtings and opening fixings/ frames are of the material. The design works towards an affordable and incremental prefabricated housing typology for low-income earners in informal settlements and townships who cannot access housing through traditional means of financing.

The house unit adopts a typical RDP housing plan and reinterprets the structure into a cost-effective, light & easy to assemble system making it easier for non-skilled

community members to build it. Prior to conceptualizing, research was conducted on specifically aluminium construction while synonymously considerate of the failure of the housing scheme, leading to the exploration of alternative means to solve the predicament at hand.

The design conceptualization process then involved looking at what materials the communities facing those problems use at their disposal to build housing. The intervention or concept aesthetically plays with the notion of a “well-executed sustainable shack,” reimagining the product of accessible materials & assembly strategies. The structure can then be assembled as a single unit or further duplicated to accommodate more spatial configurations and extensions.

Guala seals the deal with quality closures

THE COMPANY CURRENTLY has operations across five continents with 29 production plants in 22 countries. It also boasts a sales network covering more than 100 countries and selling more than 20 billion closures per annum.

Situated in Cape Town’s Paarden Eiland for over 60 years, Guala Closures South Africa manufactures both aluminium and plastic closures for local and international distribution to various beverage industries.

Guala Closures offer a wide range of roll-on tamperproof and tamperevident aluminium closures, either with a PVDC (polivinyliden-chlorid) or tin liner, dependent on the winemaker’s preference. With an artwork department onsite, Guala can assist customers with design options and offer a wide range of surface decoration from top-to-side printing, top-to-side embossing, side shaving and top-to-side foiling. All these processes are done in-house at Guala Closures Cape Town.

For the wine and spirits industry, Guala Closures South Africa also manufactures the prestigious sleek-bodied finish Savin Premium closure (with either PVDC or tin liner). Last year, this closure won the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA) Design Award. This closure with its distinct aluminium inner is patented worldwide and manufactured solely by the Guala Closures Group.

There’s a misconception that Guala Closures, as a large manufacturer, would not often sell directly to smaller wine farms or bottlers. “On the contrary, we welcome all customers, big or small,” says Giuseppe Carosini, Guala Closures South Africa’s CEO.

He says Guala sells unprinted, standard colour wine closures in black, silver, gold, white, red and standard colours. “Our minimum order on standard, plain colours are 1 000 closures, packed in a single carton. For a personalised design and decorated closure, our minimum order run is 30 000 closures,” Giuseppe comments.

“Due to the pandemic, we put into stock large volumes of plain colours 30*60 mm aluminium screw caps for the wine industry. Give our sales team a call to find out what colours we have available. We will gladly deliver to you,” he says.

The company is comfortable manufacturing up to 10 000 000 closures per single order. “We deliver locally in the Western Cape, transport up country by independent contractors or ship by

pallet or container into sub-Saharan Africa and internationally.”

Guala Closures South Africa support customers, distributors, bottlers, and mobile bottlers with handson technical assistance at the company laboratory or at the point of bottling. “We will travel locally and internationally to assist with any technical processes. We also offer capping head sales and services to our customers when required.”

With ISO 9001, ISO 14001, FSSC 22000 and SEDEX accreditation in place, the company has the necessary product support, and is completely certified to meet all client’s requirements. Giuseppe says if Guala South Africa is unable to manufacture your required specification, “We will import from any of our 28 sister plants globally, from non-refillable pourers to T-corks for brandy, port or gin.”

For enquiries, please contact one of GCSA’s highly experienced internal sales executives, Debby, Roxanne or John on 021 508 7100 or the company’s external senior sales executives, Thameen on 084 253 4656 or Lester on 079 883 5562. The team has more than 80 years of experience in selling closures to customers.

“We wish all our customers, potential customers, our friends and readers of WineLand magazine a safe, happy and prosperous 2022,” Giuseppe concludes.

FOUNDED IN ITALY IN 1954, TODAY THE GUALA CLOSURES GROUP IS A MULTINATIONAL LEADER IN THE PRODUCTION OF ALUMINIUM AND NON-REFILLABLE CLOSURES FOR WINE, SPIRITS, OIL, VINEGAR, WATER, BEER, FRUIT JUICE AND OTHER BEVERAGES.
