No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. I am, in fact, not Tashne. Tashne has passed the torch, and I have slipped into her stylish but practical shoes as the new editor of Baby’s and Beyond. Tashne may have left her desk here at Baby’s and Beyond, but she definitely won’t be forgotten. And this magazine is her swan song – I just came in to give it a gentle nudge to the printers. As we wish her well on her new journey, here’s what she put together for her last magazine.

Just last month, Zoë Brown announced she was expecting twin boys! Though she’s moved to the green hills of Sydney, Australia, she’s still a star in our hearts. She shares with us the challenges of starting a new family away from home.

Robyn Ireton’s remarkable story serves as a testament to resilience. Despite facing numerous hurdles - multiple IVF attempts, heartbreaking miscarriages, and a premature birth - Robyn’s unwavering determination, coupled with medical expertise, ultimately turned her dream of parenthood into a reality.

This issue also features expert advice on: why sleep matters for your little one, the joys and benefits of messy eating, constipation 101, soothing baby’s reflux, keeping your immune system and gut health in check, glasses for kids and much, much more! So, kick back and start reading.

Subscriptions aren’t just for streaming services. Rentoza, South Africa’s leading product subscription business, lets you subscribe to products as long as you need them and return them when you’re done.

Though Rentoza is best known for their tech subscriptions, they also offer a range of baby products like strollers, car seats, and high chairs. This innovative approach is convenient, affordable, and a whole lot less stressful for new parents. Here’s why.

The Best Way to Budget

As a new parent, budgeting is your new best friend. Buying baby products is incredibly expensive. With Rentoza, however, you don’t pay heavy upfront costs. With their subscription model, you pay manageable, month-to-month payments that help you stay within your monthly budget while still getting everything your baby needs.

Grow with your Babies

As your baby grows, so do their needs. Instead of buying new items, Rentoza lets you easily upgrade to the next size or switch products. Change or cancel your subscription anytime without penalties so you can adapt to your baby’s evolving needs.

Subscription is the Way

Subscribing is a cost-effective way to provide for your baby without overspending. It simplifies the process and allows for easy upgrades as your baby grows.

Oh b O y(s)! Zoë Brown is expecting TWINS!

TV presenter Zoë Brown Anderson is no stranger to exciting life changes. After leaving her role on The Expresso Show and relocating to Sydney, Australia, Zoë is now preparing for her biggest adventure yet: motherhood. Alongside her husband Robbie, Zoë is expecting twin boys. Zoë opens up to Baby’s and Beyond about her pregnancy journey, embracing life as an expat, and passing on South African traditions to her future children.

Picture credit: Tegan Smith & supplied

Santa came early for you and Robbie – what an incredible gift, right? How are you both feeling about the twins on the way?

We are super excited to welcome our two boys into the world. They are growing beautifully, and we cannot picture our family any other way. I am due in March, and with the festive season here, time will certainly fly by!

What was your initial reaction when you found out you were expecting twins? Was it a complete surprise?

It was a massive surprise. We had a miscarriage earlier in the year, and we were completely devastated when that happened. One thing we took from that experience was that we are both ready to be parents whenever the timing is right. I commented to Robbie about feeling slightly nauseous, and he insisted I take a pregnancy test. I was convinced it was not that – and you can imagine our shock when it said we were pregnant. A few weeks later, I started to experience cramps, bleeding, and sharp pains on my left side and went to our local GP (I did the thing that everyone always tells you not to do. I googled my symptoms, and all arrows according to Dr Google pointed towards an ectopic pregnancy). She sent me for a scan. I told Robbie not to come along as I was expecting it to be sad news again. And yes, I was doubly shocked when the sonographer started to laugh and said, “You were worried about no heartbeat – I see two!”. Robbie was in a three-hour meeting, and I asked him to call me. When he did, I told him to look at his phone and sent him the image that said A and B… he was in total shock too! Although he had a feeling it would happen to us.

Do you have any weird pregnancy cravings?

Weirdly enough, yes – and all of it healthy! I’ve always had a massive sweet tooth, but since falling pregnant, I haven’t touched any sweets. I used to be a coffee lover, but now I can’t even stand the smell of it. Instead, I’m obsessed with sourdough bread, watermelon, grapes and kiwi fruit. Thankfully, they’re coming into season, because they were pricey!

How are you and Robbie adjusting to becoming parents to two babies at once? Any fun discussions or preparations you’ve had together?

We are placing a lot of our focus on when the babies are here. Robbie is Mr. A-Type and likes to plan everything with his Excel spreadsheets. Unfortunately for him, he’ll need to be flexible when the babies are here because we don’t know how they’ll be, how they’ll sleep, and if they prefer to sleep together or separately. It’s going to be trial and error for sure. We’ve started getting their nursery together. Our goal is to have everything done by the end of the year, as twins tend to come early, and then at least all the big-ticket items are in place. I’m looking forward to our antenatal classes and Infant CPR course in January 2025. For now, we’re just enjoying this phase of it being just us and sending each other hilarious (and sometimes scary) reels of twin boys! I hope my love for coffee will return because I believe we’re in for a wild ride with two boys!

With your healthy lifestyle always in balance, how are you finding it to maintain that with the twin pregnancy and a move to Australia?

The move has been smooth and effortless. We had a container with all our valuable possessions shipped over, but other than that we started from scratch. It was fun picking and choosing new furniture we both like and getting our new home ready. And with the pregnancy, I’m taking things easy. I have not yet joined the working world (the 1st trimester was rough) and we’ve decided to hold that off until after the babies are born. I’m enjoying my walks, and things are extremely safe and efficient in Sydney – from walking through the forest alone to hopping on the train – I have been able to explore fully while my belly and back allow for it!

Are there any South African traditions you're excited to pass on to your twins as they grow up in Australia?

Yes, I would love to have them know and understand Afrikaans, my mother tongue. Plus, when my parents visit, it would be beautiful for the boys to communicate with their grandparents in Afrikaans too. Our boys will know all our favourite South African food and music, and I’m sure their dad will get them mini-Springbok jerseys despite them being born Australian citizens!

Given that your parents are in South Africa, will they be coming to visit you in Australia once the twins arrive? Will your mom be joining you to help with the little ones?

Yes, my mom will come over initially and help out – and she has already been prepped to also come and stock our freezer up with all of my favourite meals! My dad is also hoping to make the trip across to meet his grandsons and it’s also wonderful that my sister is already living in Australia – she’s just a short flight away!

And when the babies are slightly older (stronger immune systems) we would love to bring them to SA to meet the extended family and our friends!

How would you say has your past shaped your future?

Leaving home shortly after high school and au pairing in America has prepared me for this next phase of my life! I was 19 years old when I au paired for a family that had three young kids – aged two, three and four! I realised then how special kids are and made myself the promise that when I have kids, I want to be there for all their milestones. I left a very satisfying and fulfilling career behind, and I know my time will come again to pick up where I left off – but for now I have complete inner peace with where I am and what my next chapter holds. Plus working on Morning TV certainly prepared me for early mornings and little sleep!

What about motherhood are you most excited about?

I’m excited to get to know these babies – yes, they share a birthday, but these babies are not identical, they’re two little individuals, and I want them to know that from the start. I am not planning on dressing them the same, but of course who doesn’t love a matching moment – there will be plenty opportunities for those, but I want them to know they’re individuals. And I’m excited to see how my body will handle the remainder of my pregnancy, the delivery and the recovery. The women’s body is incredible, and I feel absolutely blessed to have this experience (even though it has not been pretty or easy!)

How does living in Sydney differ from life in South Africa?

Sydney is massive! I knew it was a big city, but I did not fully comprehend how big it is. I miss being able to just drive into Cape Town city centre – here it’s impossible to find parking and when you do – it’s ridiculously expensive. Best to take the train or metro into city and

What are you reading right now? What To Do When You’re Having Two by Natalie Diaz

Besides the biltong, what’s the one thing you miss from South Africa? A Hussar Grill steak with creamed spinach and butternut – they just don’t do it justice here.

Favourite holiday destination? Anywhere near water!

Who is the better cook? You or Robbie? Robbie without a doubt. He even bakes sourdough bread whenever I crave it!

What’s the one thing you can’t leave home without? My phone – always ready to snap a beautiful pic or to use it to pay for things.

What shows are you obsessed with right now? Chicago Fire and Chicago Med (I’m slowly catching up) and I love watching The Block Australia!

to walk around. I love the public transport system in Sydney – as we also have the option of commuting by Ferry! I do miss being a stone throw away from the beach – Cape Town’s beaches are world class. I’m slowly making friends – and starting to understand the Australian slang.

What advice do you have for others who are starting a family in a new country?

It’s tough not being close with family but make use of technology! And remember your “Why” for initially leaving SA to keep you grounded. Plus, at the end of the day, SA is just a flight (or two) away! It will always be there with its incredible people and sense of humour!

Have you run into a lot of South Africans in Australia? What’s the SA expat community like there? There is a very large expat community

– we often find people stopping us to say “ah, it’s so lovely to hear the South African accent”! There are several South African stores too – I always have Mrs Balls chutney and Spur sauce in my fridge! They are friendly and always helpful because they too have been in our shoes.

What’s one thing you wish someone had told you before emigrating?

That it will all be okay – don’t over think it and take your time to make decisions.

Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I don’t know if I could ever get used to their lizards and insects! My cat for some reason loves to bring massive lizards into the house – poor Robbie has had his fair share of rescuing them! 

Why birth

photography matters

Birth photography is rapidly becoming a cherished tradition in South Africa and Namibia. Welcoming a new life into the world is an unforgettable moment, rich with emotion, love, and wonder. For many parents, preserving this once-in-a-lifetime experience has become as essential as wedding photography.

Birth photography is more than just taking pictures; it tells the story of your child’s arrival. It captures those tender moments of support, the first cry, and the overwhelming love that fills the room. These images become a way to relive the experience, allowing parents to recall the strength and joy of their child’s birth.

Professional birth photographers in South Africa and Namibia are skilled at blending into the background and capturing moments as they happen. They’re there to tell your story without intrusion, creating a timeless story of the day you met your baby for the first time.

Not just another photographer

Photographing a birth requires a special combination of technical skills and a deep understanding of the birthing process. Birth photographers know how to work in low light and respond quickly to fastchanging situations. More importantly, they understand how to maintain a respectful, non-disruptive presence during labour and delivery.

The South African Birth Photographers Association (SABPA) provides guidance and training for birth photographers, ensuring that parents can trust their chosen professional to uphold high standards of care, privacy, and safety in the birth space.

Comfort and support

One of the often-overlooked benefits of having a birth photographer is the calm and quiet support they bring. Birth is intense, and knowing someone is there to capture your journey can bring peace of mind. This allows you and your partner to stay present and connected, focused on the incredible experience of welcoming your baby into the world.

Birth photographers in South Africa and Namibia work in various settings, from hospitals to home births. They understand the importance of collaboration with healthcare providers and each other to ensure a safe and peaceful environment.

Privacy and trust

Choosing to document such an intimate event comes with natural concerns about privacy. Professional birth photographers prioritise this, respecting the birth space as sacred and private. SABPA-certified photographers adhere to strict guidelines to ensure the birth experience remains centred on the parents and baby, with privacy maintained at every step.

Choosing the right photographer

Birth photography is more than just taking pictures; it tells the story of your child’s arrival.

Memories that last a lifetime

Hiring a birth photographer is an investment in memories that you’ll cherish forever. In a region rich in tradition and family storytelling, these photographs become part of your family’s history, ready to be shared and passed down through generations. These visual records can also provide comfort and pride as your child grows, showing them how they were brought into the world with love and anticipation.

When selecting a birth photographer, it’s important to find someone who aligns with your vision and values. Look for photographers who are experienced in birth settings, understand how to maintain safety and privacy, and can adapt to your preferred birthing environment. Affiliation with professional organisations like SABPA is a sign of dedication to these standards and provides parents with an extra layer of trust.

A precious decision

The birth of your child is an extraordinary event that deserves to be remembered with the care and reverence it holds. It’s a choice that celebrates life’s most treasured story: the beginning of your child’s life.

The

importance of

sleep for children

As parents, we know how essential sleep is for our children’s growth and well-being. Yet, the profound effects of sleep – both good and bad – on a child’s development are often underestimated. As the founder of Mamas Touch Sleeping Suits, I’ve spent years researching and understanding the impact that sleep can have on a child’s life, and I’m excited to share these insights.

Sleep-deprived children are more prone to mood swings, anxiety, and even depression.

The positives of good sleep

• Cognitive development and learning: adequate sleep is closely linked to better cognitive function. When children sleep well, their brains are given the chance to process and consolidate what they’ve learned throughout the day. This helps with memory retention, problem-solving skills and creativity. A well-rested brain also improves focus and attention, allowing children to perform better academically in school and beyond.

• Emotional regulation: children who consistently get enough sleep are better equipped to manage their emotions. Sleep helps regulate mood, making children more resilient to stress and less prone to irritability. A good night’s sleep can help a child navigate social interactions and reduce the likelihood of tantrums and emotional outbursts.

The negative effects of poor sleep

• Cognitive impairment and learning difficulties: poor sleep, especially chronic, can lead to difficulties with concentration, memory and problem-solving. Sleep-deprived children often struggle to stay attentive during school, which can result in learning challenges and lower academic performance.

• Emotional instability and behavioural challenges: a lack of sleep can wreak havoc on a child’s emotional state. Sleepdeprived children are more prone to mood swings, anxiety, and even depression. Behavioural issues such as hyperactivity, aggression and irritability are commonly seen in children who consistently get inadequate sleep which makes it harder for children to adapt to their environment.

• Physical health and growth: growth hormones are primarily secreted during deep sleep, making adequate rest critical for physical development. Additionally, proper sleep supports immune system function, helping children fend off illnesses and recover more quickly when they do get sick. Regular sleep patterns also contribute to maintaining a healthy weight by regulating appetite-related hormones.

• Improved behaviour and social skills: children who sleep well tend to be more cooperative, display better social skills, and are more capable of developing strong relationships. Good sleep promotes impulse control and attention, which helps children manage their behaviour both at home and in school settings.

• Physical health risks: poor sleep can negatively impact a child’s physical health, including weakened immune system function, increased susceptibility to illnesses, and stunted growth due to the decreased secretion of growth hormones. In the long term, chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to obesity and related health problems.

• Social and behavioural struggles: children who do not get enough sleep may struggle with social interactions. Sleep deprivation can lead to increased impulsivity and difficulty reading social cues, which can make it harder for children to form and maintain friendships. They may also experience issues with authority, often leading to conflicts with teachers or caregivers which can negatively impact their social development.

Mamas touch:

revolutionising your child’s sleep experience

Mamas Touch Sleeping Suits were created out of my passion for giving children the sleep they deserve. Our weighted sleeping suits are designed with love and backed by research to revolutionise your child’s sleep experience. The suits are crafted to mimic the sensation of being held, providing comfort and security throughout the night.

What makes Mamas Touch unique is its focus on the proprioceptive input – essentially, the suit applies a gentle weight to the body, soothing your child by mimicking a mother’s comforting touch. This not only helps children fall asleep faster but ensures they stay asleep longer, allowing for a more restorative rest. The calming effect of the suit allows your child to relax and feel supported no matter their sleeping position.

And the benefits extend beyond sleep alone. Many parents have found that the suit provides additional support during the day, especially when their child feels overwhelmed. It serves as a grounding tool, offering proprioceptive input that helps with sensory regulation, making it a valuable resource for children beyond just bedtime.

Whether your child struggles with sleep or if you simply want to ensure they get the best possible rest, Mamas Touch Sleeping Suits are here to help. Our product is designed to improve sleep quality for every child, helping them wake up refreshed, restored, and ready to take on the world.

messy

How letting your baby get with food boosts development

When you first introduce solids to your baby, it’s usually easy to keep things clean because they aren’t very mobile yet. However, as the months go by, they will start swiping the spoon and blowing raspberries into their food, which can quickly become a mess for everyone.

Iunderstand that this can be overwhelming and letting them get messy might seem like more work than it’s worth. Some parents feel that allowing their children to sit with food all over them, even during meals, is neglectful. But I encourage you to embrace the mess! Let them get food on their hands, in their hair, and all over their face – and try not to make any disgusted faces while they’re doing it. Here are four good reasons why.

1Powerful sensory play

Mealtimes with babies are more than just about eating. They also provide their first experience with active sensory play. Babies are born with five times as many nerves in the brain devoted to receiving and organising sensory information compared to those responsible for movement. This means babies use their senses to explore the world around them. While you can’t let your seven-monthold play in a sandbox or use finger paints because they might eat them, messy textures during mealtimes offer meaningful tactile stimulation that helps their brains process and respond to new information. Babies will actively seek out these sensory experiences as part of their curiosity and exploration.

Learning how to self-feed

When babies get their hands messy with food, they eventually realise that putting their fingers in their mouth results in food. This revelation helps them understand that they can feed themselves. Although it may take months before they can spoon-feed themselves, those early tastes from their fingers lay the foundation for this skill and can lead to quicker progress. This process helps develop fine motor skills as they learn to use their hands and fingers in a controlled manner. If your baby is getting messy but not bringing their hand to their mouth, gently show them how to do it.

The nurtureOne Fuss Free bib is designed to help you let your baby explore their food and develop a healthy, happy relationship with eating. The bib encourages self-feeding, promotes hand-eye coordination, and nurtures early food curiosity. It protects your baby’s clothes, is easy to wash, and dries quickly. It also includes a convenient pouch for easy storage and travel. 

Preventing tactile defensiveness

Without exposure to different textures, children can become sensitive to new or unfamiliar sensations over time. If you keep your baby very clean during meals, they might find getting messy uncomfortable because it’s a new sensation for them. While tactile defensiveness is not always learned – some children are naturally tactile defensive – constant wiping and keeping them clean can contribute to discomfort. Allowing them to experience different textures helps prevent this sensitivity.

Making it positive

2 3 4

Allowing babies to get messy can make mealtimes more relaxed and enjoyable. Introducing solids should be a positive experience, fostering a healthy relationship between your baby and food. If you’re constantly fighting to keep them clean or trying to pin them down to wipe their face after each bite, mealtime can become stressful for both of you. Aim to make mealtimes a positive and enjoyable experience.

Understanding fever

thresholds in children

Fevers in children are one of the main reasons parents rush to a doctor or a hospital. But, in most cases, a fever is caused by a harmless virus and symptoms can be eased at home with the help of Panado®. However, there are times when your child will need a doctor’s attention.

For babies under three months

If your little one is under three months old and has a temperature of 38°C or higher, call the doctor immediately. At this age, fever can be a sign of something serious. If you can’t reach your doctor, head straight to the hospital.

For babies three months and older, toddlers and children

For older babies, toddlers, and children, pay attention to how they look and act. If your child seems well, is drinking fluids, and has no other symptoms, you usually don’t need to call the doctor. However, call if the fever reaches 40°C or higher, lasts longer than 24 to 48 hours (for those two years or younger) or 48 to 72 hours (for those three years or older), reoccurs for more than a week, if your child is vomiting or has diarrhoea, or if your child shows signs of mild to moderate dehydration.

Trust your instincts

Always trust your parental instincts. If something doesn’t feel right or you’re concerned about your child’s symptoms, don’t hesitate to call your doctor. It’s always better to be safe and ensure your little one gets the care they need.

Other symptoms to watch for

Regardless of age, certain symptoms paired with a fever require immediate medical assistance. The following red flags should never be ignored:

• uncontrollable crying

• not moving or limpness

• a rash or purple spots that look like bruises and weren’t there before your child got sick

• a stiff neck

• a headache

• difficulty breathing

• seizure

• stomach pain

The reflux

reality health

Reflux affects up to 85% of babies. Jen Spiro shares the simple changes you can make at home to soothe your baby’s reflux and ensure their comfort.

As a parent, witnessing your baby’s discomfort can be distressing. If your little one shows signs of reflux, such as spitting up milk, refusing to feed, arching, or crying after or during feeds, it’s essential to understand the condition and take steps to alleviate their discomfort.

According to Jen Spiro from nurtureOne, “Reflux occurs when babies bring up milk during or shortly after feeding. This is a common and normal occurrence, often due to the ongoing development of the oesophagus.” In fact, around 85% of babies experience reflux, with symptoms typically peaking between one to four months and resolving by six to 12 months.

However, in some cases, reflux can be a sign of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), a more severe condition that requires medical attention. Spiro warns, “If reflux is severe or accompanied by symptoms like irritability, feeding difficulties, poor weight gain, or respiratory issues, it may indicate GORD.”

Fortunately, there are simple changes you can make at home to ease your baby’s reflux:

• create a calm environment after feeds,

• use thicker formulas (if recommended by a healthcare provider),

• feed upright using the “Koala Hold” (allowing baby to straddle your thigh or sit on your hip so that their body and head is upright while feeding),

• practice tummy time (especially under six months),

• offer smaller, more frequent feedings,

• burp often,

• elevate the crib, and

• monitor your diet (if breastfeeding).

Spiro emphasises, “Consult your healthcare provider to review your feeding methods and ensure you’re taking the best approach for your baby.”

When to seek medical advice?

frequent spitting up or refusal to eat coughing or gagging during feeding projectile vomiting poor weight gain or weight loss arching back during or after feeding excessive crying during feeds

By understanding reflux and implementing these simple changes, you can help alleviate your baby’s discomfort. As Spiro concludes, “Understanding reflux is important for managing your baby’s comfort. If you have concerns, consult your local clinic, doctor, or physical therapist for further assistance.”

Remember, every baby is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Stay calm and patient, and consult with your healthcare provider to ensure the best possible care for your little one. 

in tip-top shape Keeping your immune system

The immune system is our body’s defence against germs and pathogens, involving various organs, cells and proteins to protect us from illness, disease and potentially harmful particles we come into contact with.
By Dr Pete Vincent of Netcare Medicross Tokai

If we have had an illness before, our immune system can often effectively fight the same virus or bacterium to prevent us from getting sick again. This protective effect can also be achieved through vaccination.

If our immune system is weak, or if we have not been exposed to a particular germ before, we are more likely to fall ill.

The foundations of a healthy immune system

The foundation of a healthy immune system requires a balanced and varied diet, regular exercise, enough sleep, and six to eight glasses of water a day. This should be sustained all year round to help support good health on an ongoing basis.

Fresh fruit and vegetables, including herbs and spices, provide good dietary sources of vitamins and minerals we need. Try to eat five servings of different fruit and veg each day to get a variety of nutrients.

Lean proteins including seafood and beans, whole grains such as barley, brown rice, quinoa and buckwheat, as well as nuts and seeds provide dietary sources of other immune-boosting nutrients including vitamin D, Omega 3 fatty acids and Zinc.

Live culture yoghurt is also recommended to help keep the balance of beneficial bacteria in our gut biome, which is important for the functioning of the immune system.

Major factors that are very important in keeping a healthy immune system are sleep, regular exercise, a good work-life balance, keeping alcohol intake to a minimum, and no binge drinking or smoking.

• Half an hour of exercise per day, for example, brisk walking is all that is required in terms of physical activity to keep our immune systems stimulated.

• Sleep is also essential for good health and keeping one’s immunity intact, and sleep requirements vary according to age and other factors. Young people need more sleep than older people. Children need 10 to 12 hours of sleep while adults need six to seven hours.

• Studies have shown that 10 hours of work is the maximum length of time one can work before mistakes and

stress become significant issues. Therefore, the long working hours of medical interns, chefs, and those in the restaurant industry, for example, can lower their immunity, making them more susceptible to infections like colds and flu.

• Stress reduction is one of the best immune boosters. Stress can be controlled by setting your parameters between work and play for a healthy work-life balance. Australia has recently gone so far as to introduce labour laws prohibiting employers from contacting employees after working hours. Additional tools for addressing stress include positive social interactions, yoga, breathing exercises and, if severely stressed, psychotherapy.

Immune boosting tips

• Get annual vaccinations.

• Discuss the pneumococcal pneumonia vaccination with your general practitioner.

• Walk 30 minutes a day at least three times a week.

• Stop smoking and reduce alcohol intake, if needed.

• Eat healthily and maintain a balanced diet.

• Dress appropriately for the weather, and keep human contact to a minimum in family gatherings to prevent the spread of infection.

• Sensible sleeping patterns.

For parents, it is important to understand both their own and their child’s individual risks, which can be discussed with their general practitioner or treating doctor.

Parents should ensure their children have a wholesome balanced diet, enough sleep for their age needs, all relevant vaccinations, and exercise. Like adults, children can suffer from stress that may impact their immune systems if not adequately addressed. 

Families

101 Deworming

Intestinal worms are a hidden health threat affecting millions worldwide, with nearly one in four people living with these unwanted parasites. Lutendo Mulabisana, Pharmacist at Medipost Pharmacy, shares expert advice on how to protect your family.

Worldwide it is estimated that 24% of the population –nearly one in four people – lives with intestinal worms. Without treatment, severe infestations can cause bowel blockages and tapeworms have been recorded as growing up to 15 metres long in the intestines of human hosts.

Intestinal parasites are in the environment all around us looking for hosts...

Types of parasitic worms

Hookworms known as soil-transmitted helminths. These parasitic worms can enter the skin of your feet, and infection can cause painful diarrhoea, and in serious cases may lead to irondeficiency anaemia and protein deficiency.

Whipworms and roundworms can be contracted through contaminated soil in contact with your mouth, even if it’s invisible to the eye. Serious, untreated whipworm infections can cause anaemia while serious roundworm infections could lead to fever, coughing and potentially severe vision problems.

Pinworms affect only humans and are contracted by inhaling or touching contaminated food or objects, including bedding or clothing. Symptoms include itching of the anus that can result in difficulty sleeping and restlessness.

Tapeworms are members of the flatworm family and can enter the human body through eating infected undercooked fish, beef, or pork, or through the faecal-oral route.

“Intestinal worms can spread so quickly, everyone in the home should take a course of deworming medication at the same time to prevent reinfection,” says pharmacist Lutendo Mulabisana of Medipost Pharmacy courier pharmacy.

“Intestinal parasites are in the environment all around us looking for hosts, and can easily infect entire households if a pet or a member of the family develops an infestation.

“Although they are not visible to the naked eye the eggs of pinworms are so tiny they can be breathed in, while hookworms in soil can enter the body through walking barefoot, and tapeworms are often unsuspectingly eaten in undercooked meat or fish. Eggs of the worms can also be transferred from the hands to the mouth within seconds.

“South African families should be aware of intestinal parasites and take routine precautions to protect all members of the household, including pets,” Mulabisana advises.

Although there are often no symptoms, especially in the early stages of infestation, it is recommended that two courses of deworming medication should be taken annually as a precaution.

Tips to help prevent parasitic worms

• Clean up pet faeces, being careful not to touch it.

• Deworm dogs, cats and other pets and avoid contact with other animals.

• Cover children’s sand pits when not in use.

• Wash hands frequently with soap and teach children to do so especially after going to the toilet, handling pets, and before eating and preparing food.

• Wash fruit and vegetables well, especially if they will be eaten raw.

• Cook food thoroughly.

• Washing clothing and household items, including washing bedding in hot water, can also kill the organisms and help prevent intestinal worms from spreading in the home.

Home treatment

Treatment options are available without a prescription, although Mulabisana points out this medication is not suitable for pregnant women or children under one year of age.

“Most intestinal worm infections can be treated with either a single dose or twice daily three-day course of mebendazole, available from pharmacies including shop.medipost.co.za. Deworming medication is available under various brand names, it comes in tablet form or suspension.

Self-medication products purchased from Medipost Pharmacy are delivered safely, discreetly, and conveniently to any address in South Africa. Delivery is free when combined with delivery of chronic medicines, or when online purchases from https://shop.medipost.co.za/ exceed R350.

“Short-term treatment for intestinal worms is generally well tolerated with few side effects because this medicine works through contact with the intestines where the parasitic worms usually live and are not absorbed by the body. Occasionally,

people may experience an upset stomach, especially with severe infections, as the remains of the parasites are passed in stools,” Mulabisana notes.

“As with any new medication, people with sensitivities and allergies to common inactive ingredients should double check with their pharmacist and the medication label for ingredients, such as sucrose or sweeteners among others. Be sure to bring any potential cause for concern to your doctor’s attention before taking the medication, and always follow the instructions and dosages exactly.

“Don’t wait for the signs of intestinal worm infection to present themselves. According to the World Health Organization, parasitic intestinal worms are particularly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, and regular preventative deworming should be a priority for a healthy, hygienic home,” Mulabisana concludes. 

Ensuring good

gut health

Keeping a healthy balance of these microorganisms in our bodies is crucial for maintaining intestinal health, extracting nutrients from our food, and keeping our immune systems functioning optimally.

When our gut biome is healthy, it helps to keep bowel functions regular, lowers the chances of candida overgrowth and skin or yeast infections, reduces inflammation in the intestinal tract, and boosts overall immunity so that our bodies can fight various other diseases.

Intestinal flora is essential in maintaining a healthy stomach pH and a healthy and strong stomach lining. An imbalance of intestinal bacteria may cause inflammation in the intestinal tract and increase stomach acid secretion. A high concentration of acid may then irritate the tract and may even lead to stomach ulcers if not addressed in time.

Changes in diet and antibiotic use can lead to an imbalance in the harmony of the gut biome. Some fermented foods, including cheeses and beer, can increase the chance of candida overgrowth and, therefore, disturb the balance of our flora biome.

When a person is prescribed antibiotics, these tend to kill both harmful and good bacteria in our bodies, which can lead to the development of diarrhoea and fungal infections. For female patients, there may be vaginal discharge and discomfort.

bacteriaBeneficial live on our skin and inside our digestive tract as part of a healthy flora ecosystem that is too small for the naked eye to see.

Pharmacists recommend probiotics be taken daily an hour after the dose of antibiotics. More recent studies suggest that probiotics should continue for a month after the course of antibiotics is completed.

Carbohydrate-restricted diets can sometimes affect the balance of the gut biome, which feeds off our food. If you are on a new diet and suddenly notice stomach symptoms, taking a course of probiotics to restore the balance may be beneficial.

Probiotics contain strains of these naturally occurring beneficial bacteria and are available without a prescription from pharmacies, including Medipost

Pharmacy’s online shop https://shop.medipost.co.za/.

People with irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn’s disease and those who suffer from candida infections or thrush can often benefit from a course of probiotics.

Discuss any other medications or coexisting health conditions with your pharmacist, and if you do not notice an improvement in symptoms, consult your treating doctor.

Probiotics are especially effective when taken with food, as food provides nourishment to support the growth of the ‘good’ bacteria back to healthy, balanced levels.

PREVENTING health

leg cramps

nighttime

Affinity Health, a leading provider of high-quality health coverage, offers tips on preventing nighttime leg cramps and ensuring a better night’s sleep.

“According to the Sleep Foundation, nighttime leg cramps are sudden, involuntary spasms of the muscles in your legs during the night or while at rest,” says Murray Hewlett, CEO of Affinity Health. “These spasms can be painful and disrupt sleep. While they can affect anyone, they are more common in older adults and pregnant women.”

Stay hydrated

Dehydration is a well-known cause of leg cramps. When you don’t drink enough water, your body can lose the balance of essential electrolytes crucial for healthy muscle function, causing muscles to contract and cramp up. Drinking water regularly throughout the day is important to help prevent nighttime leg cramps. Be cautious with diuretic substances like caffeine and alcohol, as they can increase fluid loss and lead to dehydration, making cramps more likely.

Don’t sit for too long

Another potential cause is inadequate blood flow to the muscles. Sitting or lying in specific postures for extended periods may result in poor circulation, which reduces oxygen flow to the muscles and causes cramping.

According to Just Stand, the following criteria define a person’s likelihood of acquiring health issues from sitting:

Low risk: sitting for less than four hours daily.

Medium risk: sitting for 4-8 hours every day.

High risk: sitting for 8-11 hours every day.

Experts recommend taking a break from sitting every half hour and moving around for at least five minutes.

Speak to your healthcare provider

Certain medical conditions can increase the likelihood of experiencing nighttime leg cramps. Conditions such as diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and nerve disorders can impair circulation and nerve function, making cramps more likely.

Some medications, including diuretics, statins, and beta-blockers, may have side effects that include muscle cramps. Hormonal changes during pregnancy might also lead to muscular cramps. If you suspect any of the above are causing leg cramps, consult your healthcare provider for possible solutions.

Stretch before bed

Stretching helps improve muscle flexibility and reduce muscle tension, which can prevent cramps. Incorporating simple stretches into your bedtime routine can prepare your muscles for a restful night.

Effective stretches

Calf stretch

Stand facing a wall with your hands pressed against it. Step one foot back, keeping the heel on the ground and the knee straight. Slowly lean forward until you feel a stretch in the calf. Hold for 20-30 seconds, then switch legs.

Hamstring stretch

Sit on the edge of your bed with one leg extended and the other flat on the floor. Reach towards the toes of the extended leg, maintaining your back straight. Hold for 20-30 seconds, then change legs.

Dehydration is a well-known cause of leg cramps.

Quadriceps stretch

Stand on one leg (hold onto something for balance if needed). Pull the other foot towards your buttocks, keeping your knees close together. Hold for 20-30 seconds and switch legs.

Maintain a balanced diet

Getting enough essential vitamins and minerals, like magnesium, potassium, calcium, and salt, is critical to preventing cramps. Magnesium helps muscles relax, potassium keeps them from getting too tense, calcium is crucial for muscle contractions, and small amounts of salt helps maintain fluid balance.

Exercise regularly but moderately

Staying active helps keep your muscles strong and flexible, but it’s important not to overdo it. Pushing yourself too hard can cause muscle fatigue and cramps. To prevent this, always begin your exercise with a gentle warm-up and finish with a cooldown to prepare your muscles and help them recover. Make sure to give yourself enough rest and recovery time between workouts to avoid overtraining and reduce the risk of cramps.

Optimise sleep environment and position

Creating a comfortable sleep environment and being mindful of your sleeping position can help prevent nighttime leg cramps. Try placing a pillow under your knees or slightly elevating your legs to improve blood circulation. Also, ensure your bed sheets are loose enough to allow free movement of your legs, as tight sheets can restrict movement and trigger cramps.

Nighttime leg cramps can be disruptive and painful, but with the right strategies, they can be effectively managed and prevented. Staying hydrated, incorporating stretching into your bedtime routine, maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and optimising your sleep environment are all crucial steps towards better sleep and overall well-being. These proactive measures can reduce the frequency and severity of leg cramps, ensuring a more restful and rejuvenating night’s sleep. 

Hot weather

and medical emergencies

With hot temperatures over much of South Africa, the potential health risks of heat exposure should not be underestimated.

“Members of the public are urged to take the necessary precautions during widespread heatwave conditions experienced across the country to prevent medical emergencies linked to high temperatures,” says Mande Toubkin, Netcare’s general manager of emergency, trauma, transplant and corporate social investment.

“In hot and humid conditions, a person can develop heat exhaustion quickly – especially if they are physically active and not drinking enough fluids. Extra care is needed for children and older people in the heat, as well as individuals with chronic conditions such as epilepsy, high blood pressure or diabetes. Certain medications, such as diuretics, can also increase vulnerability to dehydration and heat stroke.”

Heatstroke must be treated as an emergency requiring medical attention, adds Shalen Ramduth, Netcare 911’s operations director.

“Usually, our bodies can regulate our temperature by releasing excess heat via the skin or through the evaporation of perspiration, but in extreme heat and humidity, the body may not be able to cool itself fast enough, leading to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Dehydration and overexertion can also cause a person to develop potentially serious heat-related conditions,” Ramduth says.

Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion include nausea, headache, vomiting, fatigue, muscle cramps, aches and dizziness.

Heat stroke, which happens when a person’s temperature reaches or exceeds 40°C, has symptoms that may differ from one person to another. These may include symptoms similar to heat exhaustion, dry, flushed skin without sweating, a rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, confusion, unusual behaviour, seizures and loss of consciousness.

“Seek medical assistance as soon as possible if you notice any of these symptoms because if not treated properly and promptly, heat stroke can cause a person to slip into a coma and suffer organ failure,” Ramduth says.

“Immediately start cooling the person down by getting them to a cooler area out of direct sunlight, loosening or removing excess clothing, and placing the person in a bath of lukewarm water if they are conscious while waiting for help.

“Do not use cold water to cool a person with heat exhaustion or suspected heatstroke as this can trap heat and prevent it from escaping from the body’s core,” he advises.

“One of the greatest dangers that can lead to heatstroke, and sometimes profound tragedy, is when someone is left in a parked vehicle in the sun. On a day

of just 26.6°C, an experiment by the US Centre for Disease Control monitored the internal temperature of a parked car soared to 42.7°C in just 20 minutes. After an hour, inside the car was 50°C – almost twice the external temperature.”

Toubkin concludes, “Prevention is always preferable to the health complications of hyperthermia. Keep safe and cool in the heat.”

Safety tips for hot weather

• Sun damage is an ever-present danger. Parents must regularly apply sunscreen with high protection factors to their children.

• Outdoor activities should be avoided during the hottest part of the day.

• Drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks.

• Sports rehydration drinks can be used to replace electrolytes lost from perspiration.

• Senior citizens and children are more vulnerable to heat exhaustion and heatstroke, so take special care to keep them cool and well-hydrated.

• Antihistamines, diuretics, and alcohol should be avoided if spending time in the sun.

• Never leave anyone – including a pet – in a parked car, even for short periods.

• Get into the habit of checking the backseat of your vehicle every time you park to ensure no one is forgotten.

Diabetics warned

to keep safe in the heat

Understanding diabetes better can help prevent the very real dangers of diabetic complications. A pharmacist from South Africa’s original national courier pharmacy shares crucial details to help prevent immediate and long-term complications of this common chronic health condition.

“In South Africa’s hot summer months, both type 1 and type 2 diabetics should take extra precautions to avoid heat stroke or heat exhaustion because they are at significantly higher risk,” says pharmacist Themba Muhlarhi of Medipost Pharmacy.

“Symptoms of heat exhaustion include headache, dizziness or nausea, perspiration, fainting and rapid heart rate, and should be treated as a medical emergency for anyone, including people with diabetes who are especially vulnerable to the heat.

“Being dehydrated can cause diabetics’ blood sugar levels to rise dangerously high, so it is essential to drink plenty of water at all times, especially on hot days and when exercising, in addition to following your usual treatment plan. Avoid alcohol, caffeinated or sugary drinks, as these actually dehydrate your body more and often contain unhealthy levels of carbohydrates,” he adds.

Knowledge is power

“Understanding more about the finer details of living with diabetes is important for patients and their families and can help make it easier to manage your condition. We also need more awareness about screening because the symptoms of type 2 diabetes, in particular, may not always be obvious.”

“Diabetes is a long-term condition characterised by higher blood sugar levels. Some people’s bodies cannot produce the hormone insulin needed to break down sugars in the blood digested from the food we eat. This is known as type 1 diabetes, and it is usually diagnosed in childhood and requires lifelong insulin therapy.

“Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is a progressive condition where the body becomes less sensitive to insulin and

the pancreas produces less of it, so the body cannot use insulin as effectively to clear the excess sugars from the person’s bloodstream,” he explains.

A carbohydrate-controlled diet that is low in fat and high in fibre, coupled with as much exercise or physical activity as possible, is an integral foundation for managing diabetes.

Being dehydrated can cause diabetics’ blood sugar levels to rise dangerously...

What are the dangers?

When diabetes is not well controlled, and a person’s blood sugar levels get too high, this can lead to long-term damage as well as life-threatening complications that can develop relatively quickly.

“Over years or decades, both type 1 and type 2 diabetics are at higher risk of developing nerve damage and chronic complications that can range from cardiovascular disease, kidney damage and slow healing wounds, to vision loss, sexual dysfunction, gum disease and certain cancers,” Muhlarhi says.

“More immediate complications include diabetic ketoacidosis, a build-up of acidic chemicals called ketones in the bloodstream produced when the body breaks down fat rather than carbohydrates for energy. This can be extremely dangerous and primarily affects people with type 1 diabetes.

“Type 2 diabetics are more prone to hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state [HHS]. When a diabetic’s body is fighting infection, this can cause the blood sugar levels to rise dramatically – even if the person is taking their diabetes medication as usual.”

Technology for diabetics

Keeping control

“Although diabetes management requires commitment, the good news is there’s a lot we can do to monitor and keep blood sugar levels stable in the safe range once a person is aware of their condition,” Muhlarhi says.

Glucometers, glucose testing strips, lancets and insulin pumps help track and control blood sugar. To help make it as easy as possible to adhere to prescribed treatment and manage diabetes, Medipost Pharmacy offers these devices and free delivery of chronic medications – safely and confidentially – to any address in South Africa.

“Test your blood sugar regularly, before and after meals, and keep a daily record to help track your progress. Schedule a check-up with your healthcare provider if you notice any changes or find your blood sugar levels are outside the range they should be.

A glucometer measures blood glucose levels in a tiny drop of blood, which the person extracts from their finger by pricking it with a clean lancet. There are also blood and urine testing kits to detect ketone levels to proactively help in avoiding diabetic ketoacidosis, which can have lasting health implications or even be lifethreatening,” Muhlarhi says.

“Nowadays, technology is providing even more helpful tools for people with diabetes to manage their condition effectively,”says Muhlarhi. “Some glucometers automatically digitally record blood sugar readings. There are also insulin pumps and sensors referred to as CGMs (continuous glucose monitoring), which continuously monitor blood glucose levels and administer the correct amount of insulin, without the person having to check their blood sugar and inject themselves.”

These and other medical devices and non-prescription pharmacy items are available from https://shop.medipost.co.za/, enquire using the chatbot or via info@medipost.co.za. As well as dispensing medicines to individuals privately, Medipost Pharmacy also offers telephonic pharmacy advice to patients in all official South African languages and renders assistance with registering PMB conditions, including diabetes, helping to conserve medical scheme members’ day-to-day benefits.

“No one chooses to be diabetic, and as pharmacists, we understand how difficult it can be to cope with a chronic condition. We are here to support you in your treatment plan and make it as simple as possible to adhere to your monthly medication and keep your blood sugar under control,” Muhlarhi says. 

KuraFlo® – so much more than Seasonal

Hay fever, allergies, dry coughs, asthma… these are the conditions that are most experienced during Spring and Summer seasons. Because of the heat and humidity, there is a lack of air movement which can cause pollutants like dust and pollen to be trapped in the airways. And although flu is prevalent in cold weather, we are also still susceptible to flu because of sudden temperature changes in Summer when we move from air-conditioned rooms to outdoor heat, or sudden rainstorms.

With a higher salt quantity in the product than that of the body, hypertonic saline draws fluid from the inflamed, swollen lining of the nose, sinuses, larynx and bronchi to help open the airways. This then helps wash out those trapped particles.

In addition, we have also launched our new anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic Skin Healing Cream to help for those skin irritations, rashes, mosquito bites, cuts and sunburn.

Exercises for health stronger bones & joints

Affinity Health, a leading provider of high-quality health coverage, delves into the top 10 exercises that can enhance and preserve the strength of bones and joints.

Weight-bearing exercises

The best bone-strengthening exercises are weight-bearing ones. These activities make you work against gravity, stimulating bone growth and helping maintain bone density. Walking, jogging, hiking – any activity where you’re on your feet and moving – counts.

Research suggests that individuals who regularly engage in weight-bearing activities tend to have higher bone mass than those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. Other research by the National Institutes of Health found women who participated in weight-bearing exercises had a lower risk of developing hip fractures after menopause.

Strength training

Strength training entails building muscle by performing resistance exercises like weightlifting or resistance bands. These workouts boost the number of osteoblasts (bone-forming cells) while firming up supporting muscles around the bones.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that individuals who regularly participate in strength training routines experience enhanced bone mineral density in areas of osteoporosis, such as the spine and hips. Common examples of strength training exercises include squats, lunges, deadlifts and bench presses.

Tai Chi

Despite its low-impact nature, Tai Chi effectively maintains bone density and enhances joint stability. The slow, controlled movements place mild stress on the bones, encouraging bone remodelling and strengthening.

Tai Chi is also renowned for improving balance and coordination, which can help reduce the risk of falls and bone fractures.

Yoga

Yoga provides a low-impact way to improve bone and joint health. By doing poses that require balance, flexibility, and strength, yoga can help enhance mobility, reduce stiffness, and even boost bone density in areas like the spine and hips. Aligning your bones properly also helps protect them from undue stress from everyday activities.

Pilates

Pilates emphasises building core strength, improving flexibility and enhancing body awareness. It also strengthens the muscles that support the spine and hips. Pilates is low-impact and suitable for all ages.

Swimming

Although not a weight-bearing activity directly impacting bone density, swimming helps maintain flexibility and build muscle strength. Because water buoyancy reduces pressure on painful joints, swimming is ideal for individuals who suffer from inflammatory joint conditions like arthritis.

Cycling

Cycling helps strengthen muscles around your knees, hips, and ankles without straining these areas. Regular cycling also boosts cardiovascular fitness, contributing to overall well-being, and can help reduce pain in individuals with knee osteoarthritis, according to research published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine.

Climbing stars

Stair-climbing is an easy form of weight-bearing exercise. It strengthens bones in your legs, hips, and spine while boosting heart health and muscle power. The repetitive nature and weight-bearing of climbing stairs also help strengthen muscles surrounding joints. Studies have shown that regular stair climbing can increase bone mineral density, particularly in the femur, which is crucial for preventing fractures.

health

Jumping rope

Jumping rope is a highimpact activity that helps build bone density. Compared to jogging, it is twice as efficient in increasing bone density. It also helps promote cardiovascular health and develop leg muscles that facilitate joint stability.

Stretching

Although stretching does not directly increase bone density, it helps maintain flexibility and prevent stiffness, improving joint movement range. Stretching before and after any workout helps reduce the likelihood of strains and sprains by promoting flexibility in muscles and ligaments surrounding the joint.

Mobility, balance, and overall well-being are all rooted in having strong bones and flexible joints.

As individuals age, bones lose density, while joints lose flexibility. This increases the risk of osteoporosis, arthritis, fractures, and joint pain. Regular exercise is one of the best ways to fight against the decline in bone and joint health that comes with age.

By incorporating weight-bearing exercises, resistance training, and low-impact activities like yoga and swimming into your exercise routine, you can protect your bones and joints from the effects of ageing. 

Overcoming depression:

Navigating the path to hope

While there has been a positive shift in mental health awareness globally, there is still a hurtful stigma associated with depression in South Africa that manifests in microsystems such as the home, school and work environments.

It is estimated that depression affects as many as one in six people, making it the most prominent mental health concern. Would you recognise the signs of depression in yourself, a loved one or a colleague?

Although depression manifests in various forms, a common feature across all these disorders is the presence of persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or irritability, which are accompanied by significant changes that severely impact an individual’s ability to function.

It may not be necessary for loved ones to understand the textbook classification for a diagnosis of clinical depression, however, some highlighted symptoms should be of concern if they are present for at least two weeks and are not a ‘normal’ response to life events.

Persistent depressed mood and loss of pleasure in activities are always associated with depressive disorder. Tell-tale signs of depression not included in the clinical definition but helpful in understanding depression are:

• isolation and withdrawal from social interactions

• low self-esteem with negative self-talk

• the three ‘-nesses’: hopelessness, helplessness, and loneliness.

There is a common misperception that depression always involves suicidal thoughts or attempts. Instead, depression can sometimes be a prelude to or indicate an increased risk for future suicidal behaviour.

If we notice that a friend, colleague, or family member may be depressed, we will want to support them to prevent the irrational outlook and impulsiveness of depression that increases their risk for harm to themselves. Whenever these symptoms or warning signs of depression are detected, the person should be encouraged and supported to seek professional assistance.

Understanding that depression is rooted in feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and loneliness can guide us to what our body and mind need. Finding hope in the world, acknowledging that tomorrow can be better or different, or looking forward to something can help a person accumulate enough strength to just get through today.

From experience, it might be difficult to convince a loved one who is showing signs of depression that they should enter the treatment process. Ideally, the family system and support structure should be emotionally safe and secure enough to discuss this without judgment, hostility or ridicule.

Being in a depressed state makes it exceptionally challenging to see a way through the despair that one is currently feeling. Treatment for depression includes medication and psychotherapy that assists the person with self-empowerment through changes to their thoughts, emotions and behaviours.

Apart from seeking and sticking to professional mental health treatment, there are certain basic necessities for supporting our overall mood, thought processes and behaviour in a person who has depression.

We all need proper sleeping habits and rest or vacation time, a healthy diet, frequent exercise, balanced socialising and interaction, decent self-care, and other personal priorities such as professional or educational attainments, religion, and spirituality. See these needs as the legs of a table: if they are present and balanced, the demands of everyday life can be

loaded on the table without it toppling over.

This is what we need to work towards, even though depression can make it seem virtually impossible. Finding help through self-empowerment can make this sense of helplessness disappear.

Since we can’t control other people or the future, we know that the only thing we can control is our own attitude and reactions to circumstances. Changing how we think, feel, and react towards people and situations is empowering.

Loneliness’s cure is found in connection and interaction with others. Lying in your bed with the duvet over your head is the opposite of what you need during a depressive episode.

Attending to these needs will help address the depressive shortcomings, alleviating depression since those feelings – the three -nesses – are gradually replaced, and the world will eventually seem brighter.

The first aim of dealing with depression, as well as the first step in breaking the stigma attached to it, is being able to talk confidently about it.

The reality is that in a country where one in six people are experiencing depression, finding someone who understands what you are going through is possible and professional mental health assistance is available.

The relief of knowing you are not alone can be the first step to breaking free from the shackles of depression.

What is major depressive disorder (MDD)?

Hein Hofmeyr, a clinical psychologist practising at Netcare Akeso Nelspruit, explains that there are various forms of depression outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th text revision edition (DSM-5 TR), which only differ in their intensity, duration, origin or context.

“The most common diagnosis of these is major depressive disorder (MDD), the symptoms associated with MDD are listed below. These should be considered together – if one symptom occurs in isolation, for example, sadness only is observed, this would not indicate depression,” Hofmeyr points out.

• depressed mood

• diminished interest or pleasure in activities

• significant weight loss or weight gain

• insomnia (problem sleeping) or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping)

• fidgety or slowed movements

• fatigue or loss of energy

• feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt

• difficulty concentrating or indecisiveness

• recurrent thoughts of death or suicide, with or without a plan or attempts to follow through with it

Support seeking help for depression

If you are experiencing depression, having thoughts of harming yourself or any mental health-related concerns, Netcare Akeso offers a 24-hour crisis line on 0861 435 787. Trained counsellors are available to listen without judgment and can guide you on the various options for assistance, including help accessing support for a loved one.

If you are concerned about someone exhibiting symptoms of depression and who is reluctant to seek treatment, a family member or a concerned person within their support structure can consult with the family doctor or primary healthcare provider to help initiate the recovery process.

“As helplessness and hopelessness are characteristic of depression, practically this could involve making an appointment for them at a general practitioner or clinic and accompanying them to share feedback and background of their worries and observations with the doctor,” Hofmeyr suggests.

“People tend to be more open to participating in treatment when the recommendation and referral comes from a primary healthcare provider. During this initial session, ask questions about possible referral to a psychiatrist or psychologist.

“Be sure to follow through with the full course of any treatment prescribed and don’t stop taking medication without consulting your doctor or psychiatrist.” 

“The diagnostic criteria stipulate that five or more of the above symptoms should be present together during a minimum period of two weeks, with a notable change from the person’s usual behaviour and functioning. This is significant enough that it creates distress or impairment in areas of their lives,” he says.

It is further important that family members can’t attribute these symptoms to other reasons, such as substance abuse, adjustments to changes in life circumstances, losses, other medical conditions, puberty, conflict, or other identifiable causes. In short, an easy guideline to assess MDD symptoms is that these should not be a normal response for life experiences.”

There is a common misperception that depression always involves suicidal thoughts or attempts. Instead, depression can sometimes be a prelude to or indicate an increased risk for future suicidal behaviour.

Top tips FOR TRANSFORMING

yourbody

The pressure… man, oh man, the pressure! Am I right or am I right!? Too fat. Too thin. Too much muscle. Not enough muscle. The list goes on and honestly, it’s ridiculous. I’m done!

I’m so in love with the human body, the female form, and how incredible everything that we can do is. We are magnificent! Yet, I meet beautiful women daily who feel insecure, inadequate, and feel frustrated with their bodies.

The large majority of body shame is influenced by modern-day media and society’s expectations of what we, as women, should look like. The pressure is astounding and often, is completely unrealistic. Take a deep breath, beautiful; you are not alone, and you should never feel like you are not living up to what you “should” look like. You are perfect as you are.

I’m going to simplify the important stuff for you – what is beneficial for your overall health and what will impact the way your body feels, functions and flows. These basics are easy to incorporate daily, the whole family can enjoy them, and they will transform and enhance your daily life. I am happy to share the secrets to sleeping better, ageing gracefully, boosting energy, and feeling way more confident.

Wind down and rest

Good sleep and downtime are the most underrated tools in the book. Proper rest and recovery are important for hormone health, cortisol levels, and effective repair. This, in turn, affects blood sugar levels, mood, digestive system functions, energy levels, ageing (skin, hair and nails), weight management and more. If you get nothing else out of this, please try to implement this one thing. I know it’s tough if you’re a mama, especially with a newborn but please try to prioritise as much sleep as possible. This will change the way you feel in such a positive way. Your body will recover better and your mood will be so much better too.

One ingredient foods

Instead of over-complicating everything about your diet, focus on one ingredient foods. If it consists of one ingredient (fruit, veg, protein, grains, nuts, etc.) then it is a big fat yes. These are the most nutritious and beneficial options. Anything that isn’t processed, with loads of additives, colourants, and preservatives is a YES! The longer the list of ingredients on the label, the higher the chance of nasties.

Move that sexy body

Don’t worry, I’m not asking you to become an athlete and spend a boatload of money on expensive workouts. Any movement is good movement. The most important thing to focus on here is doing the things that you enjoy. Any intensity and style of movement is more beneficial than no movement at all. The trick here is consistency. Commit to 30 minutes daily so that you can get into the rhythm of moving and feel more comfortable doing this regularly. Start with daily walks and get a friend involved –accountability, socialising, and getting into the habit of moving – an absolute win. When you have been doing this consistently for a month or two then feel free to up the ante or incorporate other activities.

Water yourself

Staying hydrated is really tough to do throughout the day, but here are a few ways to keep this going. Firstly, staying hydrated doesn’t have to always mean water. This is, of course, an incredible option but if you can’t manage it or don’t like water, the herbal teas are just as great. Diluted juices, one part juice, and two parts water, or even the low-calorie concentrates with water are other great options. Water infused with fresh fruits/veg has fantastic benefits and also makes this whole drinking water thing very cool. Coffee is allowed, but stick to two cups per day.

Avoid the crowd pleasers – set yourself apart

Whenever my clients speak to me about their health journeys, the number one concern is socialising. What to do when going out, over weekends and for events. Here’s the truth of it, these things are never going to go away. You also shouldn’t expect yourself to be a hermit. You can, however, be mindful and make the healthiest possible choices for your goals. Making better choices, staying hydrated, and still moving your body consistently, even if you go out and drink champagne, is called balance. Your goal is to nail it 80% of the time. The other 20% of the time is for you to live a little and stay sane.

Self-care please

Taking time out for self-care is not only important for our mental health, but it‘s also imperative for uplifting and elevating our general mood and confidence. This also doesn’t have to mean that you’re going to spend your entire salary at the spa. But it does mean making some time and effort each week to do something that makes you feel good. A beach walk and painting my nails are some of my all-time favourite activities; so easy to do and inexpensive. A monthly massage is an absolute treat. An at-home spa day is another fantastic option! It’s the simple act of prioritising some downtime that makes you feel spoiled. This is important and is non-negotiable.

Alright, my queen, it’s time to strategise, schedule and execute!

Take a few minutes and diarise your activities, set reminders on your phone, do your grocery shopping, throw out the temptations, and set yourself up for success. Planning is key and this doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Taking 30 minutes per week to plan, schedule, and set your intentions will change the game and your daily habits. Don’t just read and carry on feeling average. Try these – please! You deserve to prioritise your health and your body. Doing this will overflow into every aspect of your life and you will notice such a significant difference. It will be like living your life in a more productive, purposeful and powerful way. Apply yourself to trying these basics for the next three months. After this time, these will become habitual, and you won’t even need to give them a second thought. Your best and most healthy body is waiting for you!  www.fitbaeinc.co.za

Hydrate and

As summer brings warmth, sunshine, and longer days, our skin can take a hit. Discover how to protect and nourish your skin this season to maintain a healthy, vibrant complexion that lasts.

Lazy beach days, poolside lounging, and quality time with the kids - summer is finally here! But amidst the sun-kissed fun, dryness, dehydration, and damage from UV rays and pollution can take a toll on our skin, leaving it dull and worn. Here’s your head-to-toe guide to protecting your skin and keeping it healthy and radiant all summer long.

Why does hydration matter?

Summer’s heat, humidity, and UV exposure can dry out and damage your skin, leaving it dull, worn, and vulnerable to premature ageing. Dryness, dehydration, and pollution can also exacerbate skin concerns like acne, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines.

Drinking enough water is important, but hydration also depends on humidity levels, climate, and individual skin types. During summer, our skin loses moisture more quickly because of the heat, humidity, and increased sweat production. This is why topical hydration is also vital. Using hydrating products and incorporating moisture-rich ingredients into your skincare routine can help lock in hydration.

Summer skin repair strategies

To keep your skin healthy and radiant throughout the season, it’s crucial to adapt your skincare routine.

Exfoliate wisely

Moisturise day and night

Use lightweight, oil-free moisturisers for the daytime and richer, nourishing creams at night. Besides moisturising your face, don’t forget to hydrate your body. Apply a rich, non-greasy body moisturiser after bathing or showering, focusing on areas prone to dryness such as elbows, knees and heels.

1

Gently exfoliate one to two times a week to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. Over-exfoliating can lead to irritation and redness, stripping your skin of its natural oils and increasing sensitivity. It can also disrupt your skin’s barrier function and cause micro-tears, making it more vulnerable to environmental stressors and premature ageing.

Top hydrating ingredients

Incorporating the right hydrating ingredients into your skincare routine can help lock in moisture, soothe dryness, and protect your skin from environmental stressors. Here are the top hydrating ingredients to look for in your summer skincare products.

Protect from the sun

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 50 daily, even if you’ll be outside for just a moment. Don’t forget to cover all exposed areas, including your neck, cleavage, shoulders, ears and hands. Make sunscreen application a habit, regardless of cloud cover or time of day.

Target specific concerns

Summer’s heat and humidity can worsen acne, hyperpigmentation, and dryness. Use targeted treatments to address these issues, as they can help prevent clogged pores, reduce dark spots, and maintain moisture levels, keeping your skin healthy and balanced.

Mask up

Apply hydrating face masks one to two times a week to replenish moisture. Summer’s heat and dry air conditioning can dry out your skin, making hydrating masks essential for maintaining moisture, soothing dryness and preserving radiance.

5

1. Hyaluronic acid: attracts and retains moisture, holding up to 1 000 times its weight in water, making it an excellent humectant for dry, parched skin.

2. Glycerin: Locks in hydration with its humectant properties, helping to maintain the skin’s natural moisture barrier and soothe dry, irritated skin.

3. Ceramides: Repair and restore the skin’s barrier function, reducing moisture loss and improving skin elasticity, while also helping to calm and comfort dry, sensitive skin.

4. Niacinamide: Improves skin elasticity, hydration, and firmness, while also reducing inflammation and minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

5. Aloe vera: Soothes and hydrates dry, irritated skin, reducing redness and inflammation, and providing long-lasting moisture and comfort. 

glow on

Once I hit my 40s, I realised “eek” I should have paid more attention to my skincare routine. I could no longer dismiss the hyperpigmentation marks on my face as “cute freckles” …

It absorbs quite easily into the skin...

Enter the Lamelle Luminesce range for hyperpigmentation consisting of Luminesce Brightening Cleanse (face wash), Luminesce Brighter Day (day moisturiser), and Luminesce Evening Glow (night cream). I am probably never going to be that person who spends ages on a beauty regime, so it was a relief that all I had to do was three steps!

Luminesce Brightening Cleanse

The Luminesce Brightening Cleanse is a gel-based cleanser that goes a long way – on day one I was a tad too liberal with the amount but soon realised that you only need a little to build up a decent lather.

While I am using this to help treat hyperpigmentation, I was pleasantly surprised that it does a great job of removing 100% makeup when washing your face. The cleanser left my skin feeling clean and soft.

THE SCIENCE:

According to Lamelle, “This patented bio-peptide-based foaming cleanser efficiently reduces the formation of excess pigmentation thanks to powerfully brightening Oligopeptide-34 and Pentapeptide-13. Added organic extracts of mallow and peppermint soften and tone the skin, while yarrow and lemon balm extracts soothe and deeply cleanse the skin.”

Luminesce Brighter Day

Containing SPF 30, the consistency of this moisturiser is medium-ish – it is neither too thick, nor does it have a runny consistency. It absorbs quite easily into the skin, and my face was left glowing but not oily (a major plus as I have a combination skin type).

THE SCIENCE:

According to Lamelle, “The new formulation delivers more ingredients to the cells (melanocytes) that are over-stimulated, to influence the overproduction of melanin without the risk of injury or damage. Added powerful antioxidants (including glutathione reductase) better protect the cells and their nuclei, to prevent sun-induced pigment production and worsening.”

Luminesce Evening Glow

The cream consistency is not heavy and penetrates the skin quite efficiently. After application, my skin looked dewy and felt well-hydrated.

THE SCIENCE:

The science: According to Lamelle, “Increasing skin turnover is a critical element when treating hyperpigmentation, which is why Evening Glow contains a proprietary retinoic acid ester that won’t dry out the skin. The product also features gene inhibition and ingredients that soothe skin irritation, all in a night-time only medium-rich cream that penetrates without leaving residue on the skin.”

My thoughts…

Although I have only been using these products for less than a month at the time of writing this review, I am impressed with the results so far. Everyone’s skin is different, and with reference to these products, there was no burning or itching so it felt gentle on my skin.

My colleagues also noted my skin has started to “glow” and I have noticed a slight improvement in hyperpigmentation. A major standout is that these products leave my skin feeling both smooth and breathable.

I see the brightness and suppleness that comes with using these products. I look forward to seeing more positive results down the line. 

Summer’s arrival brings warmer weather, longer days, and a fresh excuse to revamp your hairstyle. This season’s trends blend timeless elegance with modern flair, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Golden hour

Summer’s hottest hair trend? Bronze and amber shades! Get inspired by Jessica Alba, Gisele Bündchen and Jennifer Lopez’s stunning, sun-kissed locks. Add subtle metallic blonde highlights for effortless, beachy vibes and undeniable allure. Perfect for brunettes, this warm, multi-dimensional look enhances natural texture. Ask your stylist for subtle, woven highlights through loose waves or curls.

Bobs with edge

Beat the summer heat with a liberating bob! “Blunt bobs and ‘old money’ bobs are everywhere. These bobs are classic styles with a timeless look. These cuts are popular, as they are suitable for most face shapes; they can be styled in multiple ways, blown out with volume to create more of a sophisticated look as well as straight and sleek and also with a slight wave, making them versatile,” says celebrity hairstylist Jennifer Korab.

Update your bob with flipped ends or layered dimensions.

summer styles

Slay summer with show-stopping hair!

Here are the biggest hair trends for the season that will have you serving up some serious looks.

Face-framing bangs

You can thank Sabrina Carpenter’s big, bouncy blow-dry with swooping bangs for bringing back this effortless 70s vibe. Layered haircuts are trending. Choose short, sexy shaggy layers or flowing ‘butterfly’ layers.

If you are looking to borrow the Espresso-singer’s look, ask for long layers. Her hair is layered through the ends with face-framing layers and eyelash-brushing bangs.

Rosé all day

“I think pink hair is making a comeback because the girlies are ready to stand out,” says celebrity hairstylist and Dark and Lovely ambassador Dhairius Thomas. Dyeing your hair pink or adding highlights is an easy way to join the pink bandwagon. “Pink is already such a vibrant colour, so I see how a full head of pink can seem intimidating to try. However, highlights or clip-ins are great alternatives,” Thomas recommends.

The “Trixie”

Step aside pixie cut, this summer is all about the Trixie. This textured, pointcut style – snipping into the ends of the hair diagonally to enhance texture and fluidity – suits summer perfectly. If your hair is on the wavy side, give it a spritz of wax through your wet and then let your hair dry naturally. “This kind of styling is ideal in the summer months and it’s much better for your hair than heated tools,” says Cos Sakkas, TONI&GUY global creative director.

70s Shag

Festival season revives the classic shag, infused with 1970s flair: abundant layers and sultry, windswept fringes. Replace blunt ends with soft, razorcut finishes and centre-part wispy bangs for an “I’m with the band” look. Perfect for summer, this style elevates basic ponytails and buns with instant, effortless glamour, keeping you stylishly cool amidst rising temperatures. 

Protect your locks this summer season

Hydrate: moisturise with hydrating masks and conditioners.

Shield: use UV-protective sprays to prevent colour fade.

Trim regularly: prevent split ends and breakage. Frizz fight: apply smoothing serums or oils. Cooldown: avoid heated tools; air-dry or use microfiber towels.

Managing Managing hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common skin concerns in South Africa, affecting men and women of all ages and skin tones. Sadly, it may sometimes be difficult to treat, and those who are prone to it will likely have to manage it throughout their lifetime, as unwanted dark marks can return even once they have been minimised.

Sometimes referred to as dark marks or uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation happens when the skin’s melanin (pigment) production is increased, and this excess melanin takes the shape of dark marks on the skin. There are various reasons why the skin may produce excess melanin, one of which is sun exposure. When our skin is exposed to the sun, it produces more melanin to protect itself (which becomes a sun tan), but sometimes the skin doesn’t produce melanin evenly, which results in dark patches. Sun-induced hyperpigmentation is especially common in fair skin tones.

Sun exposure can result in dark marks, but it can also worsen hyperpigmentation caused by hormones or injury (including acne scars). So even if the sun did not cause your hyperpigmentation, it may still worsen it.

Luckily, the advancement of modern technology in professional skincare treatments and skincare products means that hyperpigmentation is becoming more manageable. While there are various causes and triggers of hyperpigmentation, there are a few things that everyone can do to help prevent the formation, and treat existing areas of concern.

The do’s

Determine the root cause

Avoid excessive sun exposure

The most common cause of hyperpigmentation is sun exposure, but it is not the only one. Hormonal changes, certain medications or acne may all be to blame. To find the best solution for your hyperpigmentation, it is important to determine what is causing it. Pay a visit to your dermatologist or skincare therapist to find out what is triggering it, and how it can be treated.

To prevent hyperpigmentation from worsening, it is important to stay out of the sun during peak hours (from around 10am to 2pm). This is when the sun’s UV rays are at their strongest and capable of doing the most damage. If you are going outside, be sure to cover up with protective clothing, a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen to all exposed areas.

The don’ts

Don’t leave home without applying SPF first

Invest in good quality products that are proven to help minimise hyperpigmentation

Add vitamin C to your skincare regime

If you have unwanted dark marks, you need to use skincare products that were specifically formulated for hyperpigmented skin. For real results, invest in a good quality range that has clinical studies to back up their claims. Lamelle’s Luminesce range intervenes with pigment formation in melasma at the skin’s DNA level and inhibits the pathways of pigment formation. The range contains a cleanser, moisturisers, eye cream and sun protection, so you can enjoy an entire regime of products aimed at managing and preventing hyperpigmentation.

Vitamin C is widely used for its brightening benefits. It protects the cells in the skin from being injured by free radicals formed with sun exposure. It is a potent antioxidant that protects the skin from the formation of hyperpigmentation while minimising existing hyperpigmentation and increasing the skin’s radiance. Incorporate a vitamin C serum like Lamelle Correctives Vita C Lipid Serum in your daily regime. This lipid-soluble vitamin C serum offers advanced vitamin C action without irritating the skin.

Sun protection is our number one fighter in the combat against hyperpigmentation. No matter what time of the day it is, or how sunny it is outside, you absolutely have to apply SPF before heading outdoors. This is a nonnegotiable if you’re serious about minimising existing pigmentation, or preventing the formation of new dark marks. Lamelle Helase 50 offers unique broad-spectrum protection by protecting you against effects of the full spectrum of solar radiation, including visible and infrared light. This while also mopping up damage that might be caused by the sun.

Don’t try home remedies If you follow beauty content on Instagram or TikTok you may be familiar with some of the home remedies people use in an attempt to treat hyperpigmentation. From lemon juice to bicarbonate of soda, social media is filled with DIY skincare recipes. We recommend steering clear of these trends, as they are not proven successful, and many of them are actually harmful to the skin.

Don’t scrub excessively A common myth is that exfoliating your skin regularly with a scrub will help remove stubborn pigmentation. This is entirely untrue. While exfoliation forms an important part of a healthy skincare regime, mechanical scrubs have a tendency to create microtears in the skin. Plus, if you over-exfoliate, you may actually damage your skin barrier, cause sensitivity and end up worsening the hyperpigmentation. Opt for an enzymatic exfoliator such as Lamelle Correctives Cathepzyme once or twice a week instead.

Don’t pick your skin Ever heard of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)? Those are the dark marks that remain behind after a pimple has healed. When you pick at blemishes, you not only put your skin at risk of infection, but you also increase your chances of developing PIH. As difficult as it may be, avoid picking at blemishes or touching them unnecessarily. Apply a treatment gel such as Lamelle Clarity Active Control twice a day and allow the blemish to heal.

While hyperpigmentation is known for being tricky to manage, it is not impossible, and with the right products and lifestyle choices, you too can enjoy an even skin tone and radiant complexion. For more information, visit www.lamelle.co.za. 

PRIORITISE COMFORT

Summer is the ideal season to embrace a light and effortlessly beautiful look. With so many trends to try, it’s the perfect time to have fun with your wardrobe. Whether adding a splash of colour or experimenting with different styles, summer fashion should prioritise comfort without sacrificing style.

Light, airy outfits with a pop of colour can make all the difference. Here are a few tips to keep you looking fabulous and feeling great:

White dress

It never goes out of style, even this summer! Be sure to add a white dress to your wardrope to dazzle at summer parties. According to Vogue, designers have signalled a clear shift away from the vibrant colours and frothy pastels typically seen in spring, opting for a collection of elegant, swan-white dresses.

Add some colour

Colour blocking may have started as a trend, but it still holds its appeal. You can embrace a single colour for a monochromatic look or mix and match colours and tones that complement each other – both approaches work, and nobody will judge you for it. Think orange with purple, pink with purple, blue with pink; the list of colour pairings is endless. Let your imagination run wild as you dig deep into your wardrobe; colour can instantly elevate your summer style.

Matching sets outfits

Always a seasonal must-have, matching sets of easy pants and a coordinating top are a perfect choice. First and foremost, they are incredibly comfortable and effortless to wear. Whether transitioning from being a busy mom to a date night with your partner or heading out for a girls’ night, you’ll be ready for anything. Matching sets give you a polished look with minimal effort. There are several brands that have mastered creating these elegant ensembles. Don’t be afraid to break the rules – mix and match different patterns, textures, and colours to give your matching set a personalised twist.

Add a touch of florals and prints

Prints and florals are timeless fashion staples. This summer, they’re more popular than ever. Whether you prefer delicate floral patterns or bold, oversized blooms, they add a touch of femininity to your wardrobe. Floral dresses are even perfect for beach days, picnics, parties, weddings, or just casual get-togethers.

Summer is all about cheerful vibes, so make sure you choose outfits made from breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or muslin to keep you feeling light and fresh all day long. Happy summer! Happy styling! 

UNDERSTANDING YOUR underwear bra options

Jockey South Africa shares essential tips to help women find their perfect bra size.

According to Nombuso Ncapai, marketing manager of Jockey South Africa, incorrect bra sizes result in physical discomfort, breast tissue damage and long-term effects. Recognising that a significant number of women wear incorrect bra sizes, Jockey South Africa’s Ultimate Bra Measurement Guide addresses this issue by providing a simple, step-by-step method for determining your ideal bra size.

Measuring your underbust: Wrap a soft measuring tape around your ribcage, just below your bust. Make sure the tape is parallel to the ground and sits flat against your skin. Take note of the measurement in centimetres.

Measuring your overbust: Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust. Make sure it sits horizontally around your body. Keep the tape snug, but not too tight. 1

3 5

Determine your bra size: Refer to Jockey’s Size Chart to find your correct band size and cup size based on your underbust and overbust measurements taken.

Trying on different styles: Experiment with various styles until you find what works best for you. 2

4

Adjusting as needed: Re-measure periodically to ensure you are still wearing the correct sizes as your body changes over time (at least once in six months).

Padded vs non-padded bras

When it comes to selecting the perfect bra, understanding the many alternatives is critical for making an informed decision. Choosing the right bra can be difficult because there are so many styles and features to consider. However, by knowing the essential distinctions between padded and non-padded, wired and non-wired bras, you can make informed decisions based on your specific requirements.

Padded bras are intended to improve the natural shape and provide a fuller appearance. These bras have extra material or padding in the cups, resulting in a more defined form. Padded bras are ideal for people looking for extra lift or covering, and they come in a variety of designs such as push-ups, balconettes, and t-shirt bras.

Non-padded bras, on the other hand, highlight the body’s natural shape while offering subtle support. These bras allow for a more natural breast form and movement by removing any additional padding. Non-padded bras are ideal for everyday usage because of their comfort and flexibility.

Wired vs nonwired bras

Wired bras offer structured support, which is perfect for individuals who require a lift or more stability. These bras, which have a thin metal or plastic wire running through the underband, provide more shape and definition. Wired bras are suitable for a wide range of breast types and shapes, but they are especially beneficial for persons with larger busts or who want additional support.

Non-wired bras, on the other hand, are designed for maximum comfort and flexibility. Without the structural support of a wire, these bras offer a softer, more relaxed fit. Non-wired bras are ideal for women who want to be comfortable while resting, napping, or doing low-impact activities.

Water safety safety for your little ones

“Drownings can happen at any time of year, but in South Africa, we see a marked increase during the warmer months,” says Netcare 911 spokesperson Russel Meiring. “It is crucial to remember that the risk of drowning tragically increases with hot weather, and drowning can occur anywhere. Constantly assessing potential risks around water, particularly where children are concerned, is therefore essential.”

According to Meiring, the battle against drowning in South Africa is multifaceted, requiring a combination of education, technology, and community engagement. “By taking proactive measures and encouraging a culture of water safety, we can turn the tide on this preventable tragedy,” he adds.

• Never swim alone.

• Never swim in the sea, dams, or rivers at night.

• Avoid swimming while under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants.

• When near water, children must always be supervised by a responsible adult who is not distracted.

• Ensure children do not have access to pools, ponds, water features, baths, buckets of water, or open toilets – young children can drown in as little as 4cm of water.

• Ensure your swimming pool is covered with a pool net or enclosed with a SABSapproved fence to prevent children from accidentally falling into the water.

• At the beach, only swim in designated areas with lifeguards, and don’t swim far out.

• Remember, swimming in the sea is very different from swimming in a pool or dam, even for experienced swimmers.

• Only dive into a body of water if you can see what is below the surface, and always be sure to test the depth-first.

Water safety tips

Immediate actions when a child falls into water

Meiring says the first step is to get the child out of the water safely, using a suitable flotation device if necessary. “Perform a quick survey to check if the child is responsive and if they are breathing. If the child is breathing, place them on his side and call Netcare 911 at 082911 for assistance. If the child is unresponsive and not breathing, CPR must be performed,” he adds.

When near water, children must always be supervised by a responsible adult...

CPR: Hands-only technique

Commence hands-on CPR if the child is unresponsive, not showing signs of life, and not breathing. Place them on a firm, flat surface, kneel next to the child, place one hand in the centre of the chest, and begin chest compressions. This should be done hard and fast.

Continue hands-only CPR until help arrives or the child becomes responsive or shows signs of life, such as breathing or coughing.

CPR: Mouth-to-mouth is no longer the only way to administer CPR

Netcare 911’s digitally enabled life-saving service puts callers phoning from the scene of a medical emergency face-to-face with trained Netcare 911 emergency healthcare providers to demonstrate and guide them through the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) technique until paramedics arrive.

“Few people are aware that CPR does not require mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, as recent findings show ‘hands only’ CPR can be as effective as the traditional technique involving giving the patient rescue breaths,” says Shalen Ramduth, Netcare 911’s operations director.

Empowering lifesaving skills through telehealth

“Even if you have never done CPR before, Netcare 911’s national emergency operations centre [EOC] is putting life-saving skills into the hands of the public with this new, innovative application of telehealth video call technology,” adds Ramduth.

When a caller reports an emergency requiring CPR to Netcare 911’s EOC on 082 911, the coordinator immediately initiates the video calling process by sending the caller a link via SMS to a live, secure video platform. The caller clicks on the link to connect with the Netcare 911 emergency care providers, enabling them to see and hear each other.

“A second qualified health provider, a registered nurse or paramedic, then demonstrates the relevant CPR technique for an adult, child, or an infant on an appropriately sized mannequin representing the patient at our designated and specially equipped telehealth CPR station at our EOC. All the while, a case manager coaches the caller to copy their actions to perform CPR correctly on the patient at the scene.”

Final thought: staying safe year-round

“In essence, water safety is a year-round commitment. By staying informed, prepared, and vigilant, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from the tragic consequences of drowning. Netcare 911’s innovative solutions and expert advice are here to support you every step of the way, ensuring that you are never alone in an emergency,” concludes Meiring.

Prevent drowning tragedies with these practical tips:

• Learn life-saving skills, including the basics of swimming and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

• Know who to call in an emergency. Be prepared for any medical emergency with Netcare 911 on 082 911 and download the Netcare App, which includes Netcare 911 emergency call and geolocation functions as well as a 60-second callback option.

• Fence ponds, pools, and water storage: Install a four-sided isolation fence at least 1.2m high with a self-closing and self-latching gate to control access to bodies of water.

• Be on the lookout. Drownings happen quickly and quietly. Never leave children to supervise each other. A responsible adult must always watch out for children near a pool, Jacuzzi, or natural body of water.

• Stay within arm’s length of children under four around water.

• Don’t drink or be distracted by work, phone calls, technology, or anything else that may absorb your attention when watching children.

• Fit a pool net immediately after swimming and replace it every time.

• Don’t rely on armbands, floating toys, inner tubes, or devices to keep children safe.

• Teach children to swim, but never leave them unsupervised around water.

• Consider installing alarms. Various water alarms, such as a floating pool alarm or external security beams, can be installed to add to the precautions of fencing and supervision.

• Beware of drains. Children must be kept away from pool or Jacuzzi drains as hair or limbs could become trapped in the suction.

• Toilets, bathtubs, water features, fish tanks, pet water bowls, and buckets. Children can drown wherever there is access to water, and a baby can drown in just 2.5cm of water. 

Teaching your

baby to swim

Every day, one to two children lose their lives to drowning in South Africa. Teach your baby to swim and change this devastating statistic. Learn how to introduce your little one to water safely and set them up for a lifetime of aquatic fun.

The most vulnerable group is children aged one to four years.

Drowning claims the lives of over 2 500 South Africans annually, with a devastating 30% being children under 18. This means that one to two children lose their lives to drowning every day! According to ChildSafe South Africa, the most vulnerable group is children aged one to four years, accounting for more than 50% of fatal drownings because of their natural curiosity, limited water awareness, and inability to self-rescue.

To combat this alarming trend, teaching your child to swim is crucial. As Murray Hewlett, CEO of Affinity Health, emphasises, “Swimming is the only sport that can save your child’s life.” With drowning ranking among the top five causes of accidental death among children, equipping your child with this lifesaving skill is paramount.

When can babies start swimming?

Surprisingly, babies as young as a few hours old can be introduced to water. But most baby swim lessons begin around three months or later. “There’s no rush if you feel your baby isn’t quite ready,” says Hewlett. “A good rule of thumb is to wait until your baby feels comfortable and happy around water.”

Here are five must-know tips for baby swimming safety, provided by Hewlett:

1 2 3 4

Stay close: always stay within arm’s reach of your child, as babies can drown in a small amount of water.

Watch inflatable pools: softsided pools may seem harmless but can be risky. Supervise closely, empty smaller pools after use, and fence off larger pools.

Learn CPR: all parents should know CPR and basic water safety.

Avoid floaties: the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise against using air-filled floaties, as they create a false sense of security.

5

Secure your pool: home pools should have four-sided fencing at least 1.2 metres high, a secure gate, and a safety net.

Teaching babies to swim

Starting early and creating a positive association with water is crucial. Here are Hewlett’s expert tips to help you introduce your baby to water:

1. Start in the tub: begin with bath time fun! Get in the tub with your baby, pour water over their head, and let them get used to the sensation.

2. Pick the right time: wait until your baby is comfortable and healed from any medical procedures before introducing them to water.

3. Make it fun: smile, sing songs, and play games to show your baby that water is a safe and enjoyable place.

4. Mind the temperature: ensure the water is warm (around 26°C) and monitor your baby’s colour to avoid overheating.

5. Create a calm environment: choose a quiet, shallow pool spot and make sure your baby is well-rested.

6. Don’t push it: if your baby seems scared or upset, take a break and try again later.

7. Go slow: gradually introduce water temperature and depth, always keeping their head above water.

8. Motorboat legs: encourage kicking and water resistance by gently pulling your baby around.

9. Follow the leader: imitate water play to encourage your baby to join in.

10. First stroke: use floating toys to teach stroke-like motions.

11. Tummy time: strengthen back and neck muscles on a foam mat, simulating floating.

By following these expert tips, you’ll help your baby develop a lifelong love for water and swimming. 

Surviving the season of

spending temptation

The year-end holiday season presents a tempting landscape of sales and festive marketing, making it challenging to resist overspending.

Psychologist Zipho Mhlongo, who practises at Netcare Akeso Nelspruit, says that although the festive season is a joyous period when people wish to have fun and relax, it can also be anxiety-provoking and lead to financial hardship if we give in to the urge to spend.

“Remember that life continues beyond the festive season, with the usual expenses, and ideally, we should plan for it to continue comfortably rather than set the scene for the new year with ‘Janu-worry’,” he says.

Distinguishing wants from needs

Some people struggle to prioritise essentials over luxury buys and impulse purchases. “If you feel compelled to spend too much and have tried to curtail your shopping but find you cannot do it alone, it may be time to consider seeking professional help.”

Mhlongo says an important starting point is understanding the difference between the things you want and the things you need. “It is not wise to purchase a luxury vehicle when you cannot afford rent, it is not wise to buy expensive clothing brands when you cannot afford school fees. It is important to assess your budget objectively.

“As exciting as the festive period may be, it can also be easy for parents to spend beyond their means through wanting to provide the best for their children. The impulsivity associated with the holiday period and parents wanting to reward children for their hard work during the school year can threaten the family’s ability to cope financially when the new year starts.

“Have age-appropriate discussions to teach children about being careful with money and cultivate sentiment rather than materialism in children from young. Protect your children by developing

strong boundaries of financial prudence and lead by example so they don’t fall prey to spending beyond their means in future,” he says.

“If you teach your children to value sentimental gifts and gestures rather than material things, you are inculcating richer and more solid values to serve them well. Children should be raised to realise that happiness and fulfilment do not necessarily come through acquiring possessions.

“Life’s greatest meaningful moments of pleasure shouldn’t cost a lot of money, and appreciation of the experience of spending time together is what should matter most. Find creative, personal ways to treat each other – a picnic of fruit or sandwiches where you can spend time together having fun and enjoying the beauty of nature can be more memorable than an expensive gift.”

Beware of scams

Mhlongo warns that scams tend to spike during the holiday period. “Whether con artists approach in real life or through text messages, phone calls, social media, emails or the internet, we must always be on our guard.

“Tragically, elderly people are more likely to be victims of cybercrime due to limited knowledge of technology that leaves them more vulnerable to manipulation. Please help inform the older people in your life – your gogos and mkhulus, oumas and oupas, grannies and grandpas need to be taught not to click on any links or give out crucial details like pin codes and confidential information in phone calls,” he says.

… an important starting point is understanding the difference between the things you want and the things you need.

When buying gifts or booking a holiday, plan ahead and watch out for specials. “Prices are often hiked in the festive season because businesses know people are in the mood to spend money. It is wise to plan months in advance and make necessary payments before prices are hiked so that you don’t need to absorb these costs at year-end when there are often other expenses,” he suggests.

“It is also sensible to tell children or other family members you will be spending the festive season with about your efforts to save and plan so that they are involved, and their expectations are also shared. This makes it easier to navigate this period with minimal tension.”

“The festive season can be even more meaningful without the need to get yourself into debt. Communicating with family and loved ones about financial prudence is not always easy, but it can help to prevent further stress and anxiety in the long run.”

6 ways Grade R school shapes a child’s success

Grade R forms the foundation of a child’s education, life skills, and emotional development.

Thandeka Mahlangu, a Grade R mathematics teacher at SPARK Carlswald, explains why this foundational grade is so important for a child’s development: “In Grade R, children acquire a variety of fundamental skills that prepare them for formal education. The curriculum is designed to support their growth in cognitive, social, emotional and physical development.”

How Grade R shapes a child:

1. Foundation for learning: Children are taught the fundamentals of reading, numeracy, and social skills, which are required for formal education. This early experience lays the groundwork for later academic achievement.

2. Cognitive development: The brain develops quickly in the early years of life. Through structured play, problem-solving exercises, and interactive learning, grade R education fosters cognitive growth and aids in the development of children’s critical thinking and reasoning abilities.

3. Social and emotional skills: Scholars learn how to follow directions, get along with classmates, and adapt to a school setting. In Grade 1 and later, these social and emotional competencies are essential for adjusting to formal education.

4. Closing learning gaps: Early education up to Grade R can aid in closing learning gaps brought on by differences in socioeconomic status. Early exposure to structured learning environments is beneficial for children from disadvantaged backgrounds and can result in better long-term outcomes.

5. School readiness: Grade R is required so that all scholars have the abilities and temperament needed to succeed in Grade 1. It facilitates the early detection and management of learning disabilities or developmental delays, enabling interventions before the start of official schooling.

6. Lifelong learning habits: Curiosity and a love of learning are fostered by early education and are necessary for lifelong learning. Youngsters in Grade R are frequently more eager and self-assured scholars

“Grade R provides a playful and structured environment, with learning often delivered through games, songs, and hands-on activities to stimulate curiosity and a love for learning. This also helps with physical development (motor skills), social and emotional skills where they problem solve and cooperate with others,” she says.

Mahlangu says Grade R makes the transition from home or preschool to primary school smoother by acclimatising children to a structured school environment. Children who are comfortable in this setting tend to perform better and enjoy school more. 

Foundation

for the FUTURE

Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes lay the foundation for lifelong learning and success. In South Africa, quality ECD education is crucial, as it prepares children for formal schooling and fosters emotional, social, and cognitive growth in the nation’s future leaders.

South Africa’s Bela Bill has made Grade R (Reception Year) compulsory, recognising the critical role that Early Childhood Development (ECD) education plays in preparing children for formal schooling. To ensure effectiveness, all ECD centres must register with the Department of Basic Education.

Historically, ECD was viewed as optional, but its importance is now universally acknowledged. Quality programmes require qualified educators who hold four-year teaching degrees, thereby providing children with a strong foundation for lifelong educational success.

The role of quality ECD programmes

Effective preschools foster a love for learning while addressing children’s developmental needs. Qualified teachers identify areas that require additional support, ensuring well-rounded development. Parents play a vital role, and quality ECD programmes support their efforts by offering:

1. Emotional development: Children

learn to manage emotions, build resilience, and develop confidence in safe, loving, and valued environments.

2. Social development: Opportunities to interact with peers and adults teach cooperation, communication, and collaboration, essential for future relationships and teamwork.

3. Language development: Languagerich activities such as stories, songs, and discussions enhance vocabulary, grammar, and communication skills.

4. Problem-solving and critical thinking: Hands-on, play-based learning fosters curiosity and resilience while encouraging children to explore and ask questions.

5. Creativity and imagination: Engaging in creative activities prepares children for future innovation and entrepreneurial thinking.

6. Diversity and inclusion: Exposure to diverse peers and educators promotes acceptance, understanding, and cultural competence.

7. Literacy and numeracy: Foundational skills are developed through dynamic, sensory-based experiences, rather than rote worksheets.

Choosing the right ECD programme

The ideal preschool shapes children’s brains through hands-on, interactive learning that nurtures emotional, physical, and cognitive growth. Research highlights the critical learning window between ages two and six, making early investment in ECD essential for building future academic, social, and emotional success in a loving and nurturing environment.

By Grade 4, neurological pathways are largely established, emphasising the importance of these early years. Invest in your child’s future by choosing a well-structured ECD programme today – because a strong foundation laid today shapes success tomorrow. 

Help your child transition back to school by encouraging a positive attitude...

BACK-TO-SCHOOL,

back to reality…

Sigh… the vacation is over and it’s time to get back to reality aka routine!

Get back into routine

Often during holidays, parents are lenient with bedtime, so it becomes a case of staying up late and sleeping in. At least a week before school starts, consider introducing your regular sleep schedule once again to get your children back into the school-rush routine of early morning wake-ups. Establishing a routine for chores, meal times, and playtime will also help them adjust to the school-day structure. You might start winding down screen time in the evenings to encourage earlier bedtimes and help them get quality sleep. Consistency with the routine helps reinforce structure, making the first days of school smoother and less overwhelming for everyone.

Communication is key

Chat with your children about what to expect – particularly if your child is starting school for the first time. Talk about opportunities your child has to meet new friends and participate in sports and cultural activities. It’s also a good idea to let your child be involved in preparing for returning to school – for example, they can help by choosing some stationery, packing their pencil bags, and perhaps covering books, should they be old enough, etc.

Planning is key

Avoid the last-minute rush a few days before school starts by preparing well. Try to get everything organised a few weeks ahead, such as purchasing new uniforms, stationery, lunch boxes, and school bags to restocking any essentials they might need. It’s also wise to schedule health appointments like dentist or pediatrician visits early to ensure they’re ready for the school year.

Label everything

As you purchase new items, take the time to label uniforms, lunch boxes, and school supplies with your child’s name. This will help prevent lost items and make it easier for teachers to return any misplaced belongings.

Set up a homework station

Create a dedicated space at home for homework and study sessions. Ensure it is well-organised with all necessary stationery supplies, like pencils, crayons, paper, and books. A quiet, comfortable space with good lighting and a supportive chair can help your child focus better. Adding a calendar or planner nearby can also assist them in tracking assignments and deadlines. Personalising the area with a few of their favourite items or decorations can make it feel more inviting, creating an environment where they look forward to learning and staying engaged.

Encourage a positive mindset

Help your child transition back to school by encouraging a positive attitude. Share your own school experiences to highlight the excitement of learning and making new friends. You might also consider creating a vision board together that outlines their goals for the school year.

Consider rewarding them for hard work

To further motivate them, think about offering incentives for good performance. For example, you could say, “If you do well at the end of the term, I’ll buy you something special – whether it’s a new

toy, a pair of sneakers, a fun day out, or anything else you’ve been wanting.” This can generate enthusiasm and encourage them to work hard for those rewards. You could even set small goals along the way, offering little rewards for each milestone they reach, helping them see their progress and stay motivated throughout.

Connect with teachers

Reach out to your child’s teachers before the school year begins if possible. This can provide valuable insights into what to expect and how best to support your child’s learning. Teachers can provide an overview of the curriculum for the year, including key subjects, themes, and learning objectives. This information will help you understand what your child will be focusing on in class, enabling you to reinforce those concepts at home.

Addressing special needs

If your child has specific educational needs, whether due to learning differences, health considerations, or behavioural challenges, reaching out to teachers beforehand allows for early discussions about accommodations or support services that may be necessary. This proactive approach can help ensure that your child has a smooth transition into the new school year. 

travelling with kids Tips for

Vacations are super exciting but can be a bit of a stressful time for parents –here are some tips to make it a great experience for the whole family!

Planning

• First things first – choose a destination that will provide excitement and entertainment for the entire family.

• Talk to the family about activities on offer to help get them excited about the trip – and it’s also a good idea to get the kids involved by checking in with them what are some favourite items they would want to bring along.

• If you are flying internationally, look at direct flights as little ones can get a tad cranky being cooped up in a plane for hours only to have to get onto another flight in a short space of time.

• Similarly for road trips, see if there is potential to break up long road trips. For example, if it is a 10-hour drive, is there potential to do a mid-way stop to sightsee and stay overnight before hitting the road the next day?

Pack smart

• It’s a great idea to have a checklist of items that need to be brought along. In addition to packing the essentials, find out what your kids want to bring along as comfort items. For example, while it might be summer, if a child is comforted by a particular blanket carry it along.

• Make sure you bring along entertainment items that are age-appropriate to entertain kids during the journey.

Making memories

Stay safe

• Remember if roadtripping, make sure your vehicle is road-worthy and things like aircon are functional.

Encourage your kids to document the vacation. For older kids that could mean snapping pics and creating a photo collage. For younger kids it might be drawing pictures.

• Make kids learn your number and emergency numbers. For younger kids, ensure that your number is on their person – this could be on their clothing tags or a wristband, etc. Some watches have trackers, so perhaps look into investing in that.

• And, of course, make sure you have a decent stash of snacks (which they enjoy) and drinks available.

Be flexible

While travelling with kids can be stressful, remember it can also be loads of fun and a great bonding and learning experience for all.

Kids – depending on their age – don’t have an exact concept of time. Keep in mind things might take a bit longer so exert patience.

It’s a family holiday, so remember the adults get to have fun too, and create lasting memories!

Protect children from the dangers of a hot car

Whether you crack a window or not, you should never leave a child unattended in a car, especially during the summer. Unlike adults, children cannot regulate their body temperature as effectively, which means they can overheat much faster. To stay prepared, take extra precautions to avoid heat-related incidents. You can start by following the tips we’ve listed.

• Even if you plan to pop in quickly, never leave a child alone in the car. Time flies, and you may not realise how long you’ve been away.

• If possible, use delivery services for shopping when you're at home, so you don’t have to drive in the heat.

• Always place something you need in the backseat, like your wallet, cell phone or ID. No matter where you go, always check your back seats before leaving and locking the car.

• Keep your keys away from your children to prevent them from locking themselves in or climbing into the car.

• Teach your older children to honk the horn if they find themselves trapped inside the vehicle.

• Set phone reminders to ensure you don’t forget about your child.

• Keep the volume at a reasonable level so you can hear your child if they need your attention.

• Make it a habit to check your car, even if your child isn’t with you.

• Use a mirror attachment to keep your child in sight.

• Spread awareness to friends, family, and caregivers to ensure everyone stays vigilant.

Ensuring your child’s safety in hot weather requires vigilance and awareness. No errand or task is worth the risk of leaving a child in a car, even for a few minutes. By taking proactive measures and staying informed, you can help prevent heat-related emergencies and keep your little ones safe. Remember, their well-being is always the top priority. 

Wave goodbye to pain and fever and hello to happy holiday travels

Nothing flips the script from holiday bliss to holiday stress faster than a toddler’s sudden temperature increase or your own aches from a long trip. With Panado®, pain and fever doesn’t have to derail your family adventures.

What could cause fever and pain during travelling?

Travelling is exciting, but it can sometimes bring along those unwanted companions: fever and pain. Ever wonder why? It’s often because when you travel, you’re more likely to be in crowded places for prolonged periods, interacting with more people that you might be used to.1a

Abrupt temperature changes can also take a toll. Travelling between different climates can impact your body. 1b

Flying in a plane can exacerbate preexisting chronic conditions which could lead to inflammation,2a while the sudden changes in air pressure can potentially cause earache.2b

Add carrying and lifting large, heavy luggage and your bones, muscles, and joints might start to take strain, too.3 By the time jet lag kicks in with its signature headache4, you’re wondering if your living room couch wasn’t the better holiday spot after all.

How to potentially stop pain and fever in its tracks

A little preparation goes a long way to prevent pain and fever while travelling. Here’s how to stay ahead of travel troubles:

• Keep yourself hydrated, as dehydration could cause or even worsen headaches5 (airport coffee doesn't count but water does!).

• Stick to your family’s regular sleep schedule to keep your immune systems strong.6

Bringing baby home, against all odds

Robyn Ireton’s path to parenthood was paved with challenges: multiple IVF attempts, miscarriages, and premature birth. Yet, her determination and the expertise of her medical team made the impossible possible.

It took eight rounds of in vitro fertilisation, four miscarriages, 75 days in the hospital, and a heartbreaking journey to premature birth for a brave and tenacious new mother to bring her baby home. A few months later, this committed parent can say with certainty it was worth every moment.

Three years ago, tired of waiting for ‘Mr. Right’, Robyn took control of her future. At 37, she joined the growing community of single mothers by choice, embarking on a journey of solo parenthood through sperm donation and in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Robyn eventually fell pregnant with not one but two babies. She was expecting twins.

Reflecting on her journey, Robyn says, “I could never have imagined just how long and hard the road would be, the pain my body and heart would endure, or what my children would go through.” She experienced unimaginable pain with the loss of baby Libby at 24 weeks and Thomas’s premature birth at 29 weeks.

According to Dr. Nelis Pretorius, a gynaecologist and obstetrician at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital, multiple pregnancies carry a high risk of premature birth. Initially, the goal was for Robyn to carry both babies to term, but when Libby's chances of survival decreased, the focus shifted to ensuring Thomas's safety in the womb.

“Each of the babies had their own sac and placenta, which is not always the case with twins, as sometimes the sac and placenta are shared. When Robyn’s waters broke at just 18 weeks into the pregnancy, we quickly ascertained that it was only Libby’s sac that had burst. It would not be possible for Libby to survive outside the womb at this stage, and the chances of her sac repairing were negligible.

“At the same time, we were very concerned about Thomas and were

trying to avoid his sac rupturing early too. Furthermore, with the first sac having broken, there was a risk of infection, which might have made it necessary to terminate the pregnancy completely and perform a hysterectomy as a last resort in the case of severe infection or sepsis to ensure Robyn’s safety. It was a challenging set of circumstances, and we had to take it step by step, but we aimed to try to see both babies through without jeopardising Robyn’s health,” says Dr. Pretorius.

I could never have imagined just how long and hard the road would be, the pain my body and heart would endure...

Undeterred by the risks, Robyn pressed on. Sadly, her courage was soon met with hardship as she went into premature labour, and Libby passed away.

“It was heartbreaking,” says Robyn. “Everyone had fought so hard for her, and losing her was devastating, but I am very fatalistic, and in a way, it’s like she sacrificed herself at that moment so that her brother could live because she left us without impacting Thomas’ chance at life.”

After delivering Libby, Robyn’s cervix unexpectedly closed, enabling Thomas to remain safely in utero, says Dr Pretorius. This rare occurrence, known as delayed interval delivery, presented challenges. With Libby’s placenta still in place and Thomas at risk for prematurity, Robyn remained hospitalised for continuous monitoring.

When Robyn experienced bleeding, a potential sign of early labour, she received antenatal steroids to enhance foetal development. These steroids promote lung maturity, prevent brain bleeds, and boost vital functions while reducing gut infections in newborns. Dr Ricky Dippenaar, a neonatologist at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital, explains “Antenatal steroids are most effective when administered 24 hours to seven days before delivery. The longer they have to work, the better prepared the baby is for life outside the womb.”

A hard road ahead

Safe delivery

On the day of Thomas’ birth, Robyn didn’t feel any contractions, but earlier bleeding prompted a check-up with Dr Pretorius. To her surprise, she was already 7cm dilated. Shortly thereafter, her baby boy arrived. Born at just 29 weeks, Thomas was swiftly whisked away to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where Dr. Ricky Dippenaar and his specialised team provided expert care.

Shortly after giving birth, Robyn suffered sudden, severe blood loss. Dr Pretorius quickly responded, performing emergency surgery to address the post-partum haemorrhage – a top five cause of maternal death. Robyn’s timely treatment included life-saving blood transfusions.

“Dr Pretorius fought for what I was trying to do and found solutions to the many challenges of my pregnancy and the birth. I felt incredibly supported by him and his colleagues at the hospital, obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr. Sumaya Shah and Dr. Ricky Dippenaar. Dr. Lou Pistorius, a foetal specialist here in Cape Town, also played a significant part in our journey. All the while, the nurses at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital’s maternity ward were my hospital family and helped keep me sane during my lengthy stay,” laughs Robyn. “They were amazing.”

Following a two-month NICU stay, Thomas was discharged, healthy and happy, to start life with his mother.

Being prepared for premature birth

“If your pregnancy includes risk factors for premature birth, it is important to put a plan in place early on. Visit the NICU, make an appointment with the resident neonatologist or paediatrician to discuss the way forward and ascertain which facility will be best suited for your delivery based on the needs of your premature baby. This will help to avoid hospital transfers, which are generally problematic for premature infants. The level of neonatal care depends on available equipment and expertise, and you want to deliver at the hospital with the right level of care for your baby’s needs.

“Preserving life and boosting development are also significantly influenced by maternal breastmilk, which provides nutrients, growth hormones, and stem cells. New mothers can expect to express milk throughout the day to ensure continued access to this ideal source of nutrition for their babies.

“While no outcome can ever be certain with premature birth, and the experience can be tough on parents, we are reminded every day of how strong the will to survive is, even in cases of extreme prematurity. The role of the NICU is to provide medical intervention in a supportive capacity until a baby is ready to go home, and we consider parents very much as part of the treatment team in getting to that happy stage,” concludes Dr Dippenaar. 

Make a

butterfly

diy puddling stone

Summer holidays are the perfect time to get your little ones involved in nature and gardening. Why not create a special haven for butterflies in your backyard? Adding a butterfly puddling stone is one simple way to make your garden even more attractive to these beautiful creatures.

Life is a Garden

Butterflies need water to stay hydrated, just like we do. But they also need to get minerals and salts from their environment. These nutrients help them to fly, reproduce, and survive. Puddling stones provide a shallow source of water that is often rich in minerals and salts. This makes them a perfect spot for butterflies to visit and refresh themselves.

What you’llneed

: a shallow container (like a clay pot saucer or a pre-made puddling stone), sand, and soil, composted manure, or salt.

Making a butterflypuddling st

Step 1: Choose your container

Choose a shallow container that can hold water. You can get creative and use a variety of materials, such as clay, plastic, or even concrete.

Step 5: Add water

Fill the indentation with water.

Step 6: Place it in your garden

Position your butterfly puddling stone in a sunny spot in your garden, near a place where you can watch these pretty creatures visit often. Consider placing a few flat, dark stones in your garden. These stones can provide a warm spot for butterflies to bask in the sun and recharge their energy.

Step 7: Enjoy the show

Step 2: Fill it with sand

Pour sand into the container until it's full.

Step 3: Add nutrients

Sprinkle a small amount of soil, composted manure, or salt over the sand and mix it in. These ingredients provide essential salts and amino acids that butterflies need.

Step 4: Create a puddle

Smooth out the sand and create a slight indentation in the centre. This will form your puddle.

Attract more butterflies to your garden

In addition to a puddling stone, you can also plant flowers and plants that butterflies love. Here are a few suggestions.

Sunflowers: butterflies are attracted to the bright yellow blooms of sunflowers.

Sit back and watch as butterflies flock to your new addition. You might even see large congregations of male butterflies enjoying a drink together!

Step 8: Keep it fresh

Replace the water regularly, especially on hot days.

Zinnias: these colourful flowers come in a variety of hues and are a popular choice for butterflies.

Asters: asters provide a lateseason nectar source for butterflies.

Buddleia: often called the “butterfly bush,” buddleia is a favourite of butterflies.

Lavender: lavender’s fragrant blooms are attractive to many butterfly species.

Marigolds: marigolds are known to repel pests, making them a beneficial addition to your garden.

By planting these flowers and plants, you'll create a more inviting environment for butterflies to visit your garden.

Summer travel tipsfurbies for

Summer is often the time when we hit the road for the holiday break. If you’re anything like us, you refuse to venture from your home for longer than a day without your furry friend at your side. Luckily, South Africa is a pet-friendly country with plenty of options for accommodation, restaurants, and leisure activities that welcome pets.

We have several tips and tricks for making your summer holiday enjoyable and stressfree for you and your pup.

Don’t worry, we love all four-pawed companions! However, most cats don’t enjoy travelling, and car rides can be very stressful for them. Obviously, if your cat is a feline globetrotter and is used to travelling, feel free to take her along for the ride.

The same goes for some dogs. If your dog is not comfortable travelling for long distances in a car, it may be best for him to stay at home where he feels safe and secure. There are many reputable pet-sitters that you can employ to look after your pets while you are away.

Summer holidays are all about fun in the sun! Whether you’re heading to the beach or hiking up your favourite trail, consider the heat and how it affects your pup. Different dogs handle heat differently, and some breeds are more prone to overheating and heatstroke. Never leave your dog in the car, even for a short time, as temperatures in isolated vehicles can soar above 50°C within minutes. Be aware of the symptoms

Day-tripping

If your dog is a reluctant roadtripper, start slowly. Consider taking him on a day trip to the local park or pet-friendly beach. Always use a comfortable and secure harness and keep him on a leash at all times, for his safety as well as others. Pack a “doggy bag” with travel essentials like dog treats, water bottles and bowls, a towel, a spare harness and lead, poop bags, a pet first aid kit, and familiar bedding.

In the car, keep your pup safely secured. A crate is ideal for cratetrained dogs, but there is a variety of travel harnesses available that act as doggy safety belts.

Walking on hot tar is painful for your dog’s paws. Remember that tarmac can get much hotter than the air temperature. If it’s 25°C outside, the tar can reach over 50°C, and at 31°C, it can exceed 62°C! Use the “seven-secondpaw-rule” to check if the ground is too hot for your dog’s paws: if you can’t hold the back of your hand against the tar for a full seven seconds, it is too hot for your pup’s paws.

If you think your pup is getting too hot, stop any physical activity, encourage them to rest in a shady spot, and give them some cool water. If your dog is okay with it, gently spray them with room temperature water and use a fan or breeze to help cool them down.

Keep your dog’s vaccinations and parasite treatments up to date, especially if you’re visiting an area prone to ticks. Pet-friendly establishments may ask for a copy of your pet’s vaccination booklet.

Let’s

go the distance

For long car rides, make your dog as comfortable as possible. Bring their favourite blanket or bed, and give them a safe chew toy to keep them occupied. Talk to your vet about safe calming remedies, if necessary. Keep the car cool, and check in with your pup regularly to ensure they’re enjoying the ride. Plan your breaks and research pet-friendly stops along your route. Many service stations offer water points and “pee-stops” for pets. Be considerate of other travellers by keeping your dog on a leash and cleaning up after them.

Above all, make sure your four-legged friend is microchipped and has a well-fitted collar and tag with your current contact details. Before you leave, check that the chip is registered with your current phone number and physical address. Consider uploading your dog onto YapScan, an innovative AI-based app that uses your dog’s unique nose print to identify him if they get lost. Plus, YapScan will donate R1 to the NSPCA for every dog registered on the app!

Beat the heat

Keep your best friend comfortable in hot weather by making sure they always have access to fresh, cool water, and make sure your pup has easy access to shelter from the sun at all times.

Be aware of the symptoms of heatstroke in dogs. These include excessive panting, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, bright pink gums, difficulty breathing, uncoordinated movements and even seizures.

Don’t exercise your dog in the heat of the day.

The most important part of travelling with your best bud is to make sure they are safe, comfortable, and happy. If you need help with your pet while on holiday, get in touch with the local SPCA. You can find a list of all the SPCAs across South Africa on our website: www.nspca.com. 
