I WANT TO INTERVIEW VIOLA DAVIS, WAS ONE OF THE THINGS I SAID IN MY FIRST DAYS AS EDITOR OF INBOUND, A FEW ISSUES AGO. I GOT THE “GOOD IDEA” AND “BEST OF LUCK” REACTIONS BUT DEEP INSIDE, MY COLLEAGUES PROBABLY THOUGHT: SHAME, POOR GAVIN, AND HIS VISION.

Even when comedian Marc Lottering posted on X that he had spotted her, all eyes were on me. But deep down inside, I knew my friend, Leonard Williams, who is her personal chef, was not going to disappoint me.

Then, on a Saturday morning, a call from Leonard: “You won’t believe it. Viola has agreed to do an interview with you. And only you!” I immediately called Media Xpose Head of Content, Tashne Singh, and her reaction of: “Well done, Gavin!” made me realise I was on the right track. And the praise of my other colleagues followed.

I found Viola deep, poetic, and incredibly positive

towards South Africa. With loadshedding and water cuts, crime and corruption, there is someone in Hollywood who thinks this country is her second home. This is a first for InBound – to interview a global star.

US Vice- President, Kamala Harris, who was the first black woman to be elected to this position, quoted her mom as saying: “You may be the first to do many things, but make sure you’re not the last.” And this is how I feel about InBound. My colleagues and I will strive to bring you the biggest and the best.

I am even more excited about our interview with jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim, and with singer Gary Barlow. Also, don’t miss our first column aimed at all single persons navigating their way through life and love.

Enjoy.

THIS MONTH’S BURNING QUESTION…

Is winter the best time to travel to Africa and see the wildlife?

ANSWER:

They say the best time to visit Africa is during the drier winter months, from May to September, when vegetation thins out and wildlife congregates around remaining water sources. The large southern game reserves are at their best during this time.

Not entirely true, some African tour operators say. Most safari enthusiasts want to witness those nail-biting river crossings in July/August; however, the migratory herds are constantly on the move—all year—and there are many highlights to witness, from birthing season to yearround predator action.

Research the peak and shoulder dates of a destination, as well as the seasonal and out-of-season highlights, thoroughly before committing to travel dates. The perfect dates are the ones that work for you and your travel companions.

LIFE SCAN FOR

AN INFLIGHT WALK OF SHAME

I was flying home after two years in the UK. I’d just fallen asleep on the flight when I was awoken by what sounded like something out of Jurassic Park. The guy next to me had projectiled everywhere, including all over me. The crew rushed round, took the guy away and put him on oxygen, came back, cleaned up some of the mess, threw some powder over what was left and asked me to go with them to get myself cleaned up. I had no spare clothes. So, the crew kindly offered to wash my clothes and gave me business class PJ’s to wear. The PJ’s were were tight on me. The flight was full, so I had to return to my seat in Economy class wearing Business Class pyjamas. I could see and hear people giggling at me as I walked down the aisle to my seat. Morning came, and I had to do the walk of shame in my business class PJs again to change back into my own clothes which were still slightly

stained. I was not a happy chappy.

MISSING LUGGAGE

After recently vacationing in South Africa, my husband and I boarded an aircraft in Johannesburg to begin our flight home to Canada. However, shortly after take-off, we returned to Johannesburg because a crew member became ill. Following a 2-hour delay on the tarmac, we set off for London. Upon landing at Heathrow, we disembarked and hurried to make our connecting flight to Toronto. Unfortunately, we were too late. The next morning, we left for Toronto. After our arrival, we learned that our luggage was missing. Instead of driving home to Bath, we remained overnight in Toronto to await our luggage, which had mistakenly been put on another flight. Finally, with our bags retrieved at noon the next day, we went from mission impossible to mission accomplished!

STRUGGLE TO GET HAND LUGGAGE BACK

On our way to Thailand, we had a layover in Singapore. We landed at the international terminal and with great excitement, we went on a city tour. We had to check in our hand luggage (laptops, medication, perfumes, and extra clothes) at a storage hold before we left the airport building. Had a very insightful

tour of the city and upon our return to the airport, our trouble started. We were not allowed to go to the storage area to get our hand luggage as this was in the international terminal and we had domestic plane tickets for the trip to Phuket. We ran past 30 counters when my wife suddenly went to a random counter, got two small stamps and we then had to run. We just made it in time and our holiday started without any drama.

ARRESTED IN THE NETHERLANDS

My colleagues and I went on a three-month working trip to The Netherlands. One weekend, I decided to go to Germany to party. I left my passport with them as I did not want to carry it with me in the clubs. I partied all weekend and returned to The Netherlands to join my colleagues. Just as we were crossing the German border back into The Netherlands, the Immigration Police walked onto the train, looked at me and demanded I present my passport. When I told them I didn’t have it, they asked me to come with them. We got off in Arnhem where they took me to the police station. I called my colleagues and while they were on their way, I was arrested. I spent an hour in the cells before I was released. I have never been happier to see my colleagues.

SOUTH AFRICA IS GOD’S “PLAYGROUND”

COVER FEATURE
EXCLUSIVE! 14 INBOUNDSA / April 2024

HOLLYWOOD PRODUCERS ARE LURED BY SOUTH AFRICA’S LOW PRODUCTION COSTS. OUR MOUNTAINS AND SEA VIEWS ARE EVERY CINEMATOGRAPHER’S DREAM. BUT FOR HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS, OSCAR WINNER AND FILM PRODUCER VIOLA DAVIS, IT’S ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN JUST THE LANDSCAPE. IT’S ABOUT THE HEARTS AND SPIRIT OF THE PEOPLE. AND OUR FOOD, SHE TELLS INBOUND SA MAGAZINE IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW.

She is in Cape Town. Incognito. She appears in the crowds unnoticed. She is working on a new film project. She is not doing any media interviews. She is focused on the character that she is playing and the movie she is producing. There are none of Hollywood’s usual ostentatious outings when out on the streets. Just plain Viola. Unnoticed.

Until the day, standup comedian Marc Lottering walked past a restaurant in Cape Town and saw the Hollywood actress sitting inside having a meal.

“I just walked past a restaurant and saw Viola Davis having lunch. I was shaking but kept on walking because she was eating. And now I’ll spend the rest of the year wondering if she would have said yes to a pic and whether I missed my one shot at Hollywood.” He wrote on X afterwards.

Social media went crazy for two reasons: Viola Davis is in our country, and one of our funniest comedians got stage fright when seeing her. South Africa is not new to the How To Get Away With Murder star. She filmed the Hollywood blockbuster The Woman King in various parts of the country. This is her fifth visit. Imagine our excitement when we get the call from one of her assistants to say: “Viola will be happy to give you an interview.” And, of course, our joy was uncontainable.

A few days later, she told us that she calls South Africa “God’s playground”. We were interested in her love for our country. “It’s as if the most beautiful traits of every part of earth and life were

splattered here,” she says. She loves it so much that she was perfectly fine spending her 58th birthday here last year.

“The kindness, heart and spirit of the people is what first grab you. They give….and give in abundance.”

She adds, “What put my stay here over the top were the Safari experiences at Thanda, Aquila, and Sabi Sabi at Kruger National Park which cannot be described in words.”

And then the conversation turns to food with one simple statement: “The food!” And then she lists her favourite restaurants. “Willoughby’s, Nobu, Ginja, Tang, The Bungalow, Salsify restaurant and Kloof Street House are some of the best dining experiences of my life. And I’ve lived a life,” she tells us.

“The Spa at The One And Only Hotel and my life-shifting stay at Sante Wellness have tattooed themselves on my soul. It has shifted my life. The wines are beyond comparison. Babylonstoren, Boschendal, and Vergenoegd wines exceeded my expectations.”

But she is not always out dining at these fine restaurants. When on set, she adheres to a strict diet. And the person responsible for this is local chef Leonard Williams. Leonard hails from Heidelberg in the Southern Cape. He cooked for her, Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch, while they were working on The Woman King. Here, the Oscar winner first got a taste of Leonard’s food, and she has been hooked ever since.

April 2024 / INBOUNDSA 15
COVER FEATURE

WINNER OF THE BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS FOR AT THE 89TH

“Leonard is a part of this landscape. His food and culinary awareness,” she says. “He surprises me every day.”

For Leonard, it is an honour to be cooking for Viola. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would cook for a Hollywood Actress. This is truly a highlight of my career,” he tells InBound SA.

“An opportunity came my way at the end of 2021 to work as a cast chef on The Woman King where Viola Davis was the lead actress. I had to prepare the main cast meals with specific dietary requirements.”

Last year on Christmas day, while still working in South Africa, Viola requested something special from her South African chef, Leonard Williams. This is how he prepared it for her.

Viola, he says, is not a fussy eater at all. “I work closely with Viola’s personal trainer Gabriela (McClain). The brief concerning dietary requirements was gluten-free, dairy-free, lowcarb and low-sugar. Viola is really disciplined when it comes to her diet,” says Leonard. Her favourite? Lamb briyani. “Viola requested this for her Christmas lunch last year. In preparing it, I stayed true to a traditional briyani while still maintaining her dietary requirements.”

Viola says she feels like a child who never wants to leave the playground, holding onto a swing or a seesaw whenever she is in the country, whether it’s the food or the people. “South Africa is joy,” says Viola. IB

Thandiswa Mazwai

20 YEARS OF ZABALAZA AND A NEW ALBUM

THE ICONIC THANDISWA MAZWAI IS READY TO SET OUR SOULS ON FIRE AGAIN WITH A NEW ALBUM. IT’S BEEN INTRIGUING TO WATCH HER IMMACULATE GROWTH IN THE ARTS, AND THE CREATIVITY THAT HAS COME WITH EVERY SONG AND STYLE SHE HAS BROUGHT TO THE STAGE. YES, GIVE US MORE!

Thandiswa Mazwai has long been one of the most influential musicians on the South African music scene. She began her career in 1995 with Bongo Maffin, one of the pioneering bands of the Kwaito era. After 6 award-winning albums with Bongo Maffin, she ventured into a solo career. Her first project Zabalaza (2004), reached double platinum status and won numerous awards, including a Kora award for Best African Female and four South African Music Awards.

She will be releasing her much-awaited album Sankofa in May 2024! This will be celebrated with an exciting performance at Carnival City, Johannesburg on the 11th of May 2024. The show will also include songs from Zabalaza, Thandiswa’s iconic debut solo album, which turns 20 today. Imagine 20!

Thandiswa says: “Sankofa in the Ghanian language means to go back and fetch what’s been left behind - what is important, what honours you, and what needs healing. How apt that as I prepare to launch this new work, my seminal album Zabalaza, celebrates 20 years. For me, this is the year of Sankofa.”

Recorded in Johannesburg, Dakar, and New York, the album combines archival Xhosa music, jazz and West African rhythms, and includes songs produced by Meshell Ndegeocello and Nduduzo Makhathini, and collaborations with Thandi Ntuli and Tendai Shoko.

Thandiswa says “The making of Sankofa was a thrilling sonic odyssey that took me from villages

of the Eastern Cape to Dakar and New York, lacing a thread that resulted in something truly special. Within those ancient rhythms and polyrhythms, a common lexicon revealed itself to me and I am excited to share this music with those who have been growing and evolving with me. Listen out for uhadi, umrhubhe, ngoni, kora and drums in the music. It is about a celebration of the pan-African spirit and reconnecting with the African diaspora.”

About Zabalaza, Thandiswa says “I cannot believe it’s been 20 years. And what an incredible 20 years. Zabalaza became my magnum piece and ended up inspiring an entire generation to look within, engage their culture and seek an affirming aesthetic that represents their African-ness. Thank you to everyone who loved this work, nindenze umntu.” IB

Tickets for her upcoming performance at Carnival City, Johannesburg on the 11th of May 2024 are available at Computicket going for R350 – R1 000.

21 MINUTES WITH TAKE THAT’S

Gary Barlow

WHEN WE HEARD GARY BARLOW WAS IN TOWN, WE KNEW WE HAD TO THINK OUT OF THE BOX WITH OUR INTERVIEW. AS A MEMBER OF THE UK BAND, TAKE THAT, THERE IS VERY LITTLE WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT HIM. SO, WE OPTED FOR A PLAYFUL APPROACH. WITH A PILE OF QUESTIONS LAID OUT IN FRONT OF HIM AT KFM’S STUDIOS IN CAPE TOWN, ALL FACE DOWN LIKE A DECK OF CARDS, GARY DIVED IN, RANDOMLY PICKING A FEW QUESTIONS AS IF HE WERE ON A TREASURE HUNT.

What were you doing when you last lost track of time?

It happens every day, in the studio, you lose complete track of time. Like yesterday, I arrived there in London at 8 am. My flight to Cape Town was at 6pm, so I knew I had to be home by 1pm. I looked at the clock: 2:30pm! Lost track of time. Six and a half hours gone! Music is like that. You get lost.

If you could spend a month living in any city around the world, where would it be?

I always wanted to live in New York. I’d just like to try it. I’ve only just briefly visited New York, I was there for maybe two weeks. But getting a house there and living there, I think it would be very interesting.

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

(Laughs) I would say I’m 40. 40 was good. I’d just joined the band again and times were good. 40 to 50 was the quickest decade of all. My new and ambitious goal is to slow down the 50s. I’m not doing very well! I’m already 53! Failing, failing

miserably. It’s hard to slow down; the key to slowing time down is not to do so much.

What’s the most breathtaking natural wonder you’ve encountered during your travels?

The Grand Canyon! There’s so much to do there, it’s incredible. If you were to ask my kids about their favourite holidays, they would mention white river rafting or the Grand Canyon. We often go there as a family in summer, and it’s

24 INBOUNDSA / April 2024
ENTERTAINMENT

absolutely brilliant. It’s run by the Hualapai tribe, the experience is unforgettable. From signing in to boarding buses and boats, you’re constantly mesmerised by the stunning views. It’s truly the most incredible experience and one of the best things to do!

When did you last laugh so much it hurt?

Last week, during band rehearsal, we had a good laugh. Howard, Mark, and I, our bond goes way back. We’ve been best friends for a long, long time. We have this unspoken connection; when someone new enters the room, a glance between us says it all! It’s moments like these that I cherish.

What travel activity or experience do you find yourself longing to repeat?

Skiing, in France or America, it’s my favourite holiday. Lying on the beach is not for me. I love swimming in the sea, love it, but lying on the beach in the sun, it’s not for me, it’s boring. I want to ski, first on the slope in the morning, hard snow, big lunch, I love it! Going to bed at 8:30 pm cause you’re tired…I love it!

What’s the wisest thing you have ever heard someone say?

My mentor, a professor at the Guildhall School of Music in London, listened to one of my songs when I was about 16 or 17. Instead of offering direct feedback, he played me some music by Bach. It hit me, I needed to simplify. He emphasized the importance of simplicity, and ever since then, every time I write a song, I remember his words: simplify, keep it simplified.

SOUTH AFRICA’S STEAKS ARE UNBEATABLE!

If you could go on a road trip with any two people, living or dead, who would they be and where would you go?

It would definitely be my best friend Elliot, who’s here with me in South Africa right now. He’s not only a close friend but also a talented songwriter;

actually he’s written a lot of songs you would know! As for the second person, well, I’d have to go with my wife. Can’t forget to mention her, just in case she’s reading this! Wouldn’t want to get into trouble later on!

Do you have a favourite local dish or cuisine from your travels that you can’t get enough of?

I’m a huge foodie! In France, it’s snails; in Italy, truffle pasta; in America, meat. But my top pick? South Africa’s steaks. They’re unbeatable!

What is most important to you in life?

Are you giving it the time it deserves?

For me, family takes the top spot in terms of importance. But finding the right balance is crucial. Music is a significant part of my life and it demands its share of time and dedication. However, I often grapple with a sense of guilt, feeling like I’m missing out on pivotal moments in my children’s lives. It’s a constant juggling act, trying to give each aspect the attention it deserves.

When was the last time you tried something new?

(Grins) You know, my son is bizarrely mad about oysters. I never fancied oysters, but I had one the other day for the first time. While they were okay, I couldn’t quite grasp what all the hype was about. Interestingly, the only thing I could taste was the vinegar.

Are there any hidden gems or lesserknown travel spots you’ve discovered that you’d recommend to your fans?

We went to Auckland, New Zealand. There’s this small island called Waiheke, with 52 beaches and 7 vineyards! What’s truly unique is the island’s limited development, only 100 houses scattered across its landscape, each resembling something straight out of a magazine cover.

As we wrapped up our chat with Gary Barlow, we went well over the 15 minutes we were allocated with him. His down-to-earth responses gave us a real sense of who he is beyond the spotlight. It showed us the Gary behind the music, and it’s been a blast! Make sure to grab your concert tickets as soon as possible from www.ticketmaster.co.za. IB

Abdullah Ibrahim A WORLD TOUR AT 89

LEGENDARY PIANIST ABDULLAH IBRAHIM HAS A LONG MUSICAL HISTORY THAT DATES BACK TO WHEN HE WAS JUST 16 YEARS OLD. AT HIS HOME IN GERMANY, HE IS SHARPENING HIS MUSICAL TALENTS FOR A WORLD TOUR WITH A STOPOVER, OF COURSE, IN SOUTH AFRICA.

Abdullah, who turns 90 in October this year, lives in a small village in Germany, in a place he says he was led to by destiny, and where he feels comfortable, although he misses his family. “Living here makes it easy for me to commute for concerts in the northern hemisphere. Wherever we are globally we respect the local culture.” He describes his relationship with the Germans as ‘great and perfect’.

He will be performing at Cape Town City Hall on the 12th of April 2024, and on the 14th of April 2024 at the Johannesburg SunBet Arena at Time Square. Given how excited the people are to see him perform, we asked him what South Africans can expect. “We will present our music as usual with the utmost sincerity and total respect for the audience,” he said.

Looking back over the last few years, he says that this tour was prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He misses his family, and “COVID created havoc in the global concert scene so I could not even travel back to South Africa.”

Abdullah is performing around the world, visiting cities and cultures that, in their time, were

foundational to his life as an exile. The concerts in South Africa are perfect for those who have been craving this kind of experience, and they form part of a world tour that will leave a mark on history for books and magazines to record! Go and be part of history in the making.

Marvin Gaye dies

In April 1984, soul star Marvin Gaye died after being fatally shot by his father during a heated altercation over mislaid insurance documents. The shooting, which occurred one day before Gaye’s 45th birthday, came at a time when the Washington D.C.-born singer and songwriter was enjoying a career resurgence, sparked by the success of his 1982 single, “Sexual Healing,” and its parent album, Midnight Love. Gaye rose to fame at Detroit’s Motown Records where he racked up 13 No.1 singles on the Billboard R&B chart between 1962 and 1981, though it was as an album artist that he made his biggest impact, releasing the acclaimed concept LP, What’s Going On in 1971.

Paul McCartney leaves The Beatles

On April 10, 1970, Paul McCartney revealed in a press statement that he had quit The Beatles. His shock departure from the groundbreaking group came seven days before the singersongwriter launched his solo career with his debut album, McCartney. His former songwriting partner John Lennon, who had left the band in late 1969 but kept his decision under wraps to aid the band’s business ventures, was scathing when asked by a journalist to comment. “Paul hasn’t left. I sacked him,” he snapped.

Elvis releases All Shook Up

On 20 Apr 1957, the king of rock ‘n roll Elvis Presley, started an eight-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘All Shook Up.’ It went on to be the biggest single of 1957 selling over 2 million copies. The lyrics, written by Elvis and Otis Blackwell, together with a scene suggesting cross-dressing, were deemed offensive by some.

STIRRING FREEDOM CHARTER EXHIBIT HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE

OF OUR

History into the Future

ON THE CUSP OF THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF SOUTH AFRICA’S DEMOCRACY, THE EAGERLY AWAITED FREEDOM CHARTER EXHIBITION OPENED AT CONSTITUTION HILL IN JOHANNESBURG, COINCIDING WITH THE HUMAN RIGHTS FESTIVAL.

The exhibit is a stirring display of meticulously crafted portraits, paying homage to the visionary leaders who played pivotal roles in the genesis of the Freedom Charter. This historic document, authored in 1955, encapsulated the

collective hopes and aspirations of the South African populace for their future democracy. It served as a beacon of inspiration during the struggle against apartheid and laid the foundation for developing the progressive South African Constitution.

The exhibit features sixteen iconic leaders, including Walter Sisulu, Lillian Ngoyi, Albert Luthuli, and Helen Joseph. From diverse backgrounds, these leaders united to articulate a shared vision of democracy and equality for all South Africans.

The curatorial statement accompanying the exhibit emphasises the significance of these leaders’ contributions and underscores the relevance of their legacies in contemporary discussions about leadership and governance in South Africa. The exhibition seeks to ignite dialogue and reflection on the essential attributes of effective leadership as the nation navigates its future.

Artist Navan Chetty, known for his commitment to presenting history as a living subject, speaks passionately about his work: “In painting these portraits, I felt the power of the words of the Freedom Charter. My aim is for everyone to look at this body of work and find personal resonance, to remember the legacy we have been gifted with.”

The exhibit is perfectly timed to coincide with the upcoming national election in May 2024. It allows visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and affiliations to engage with South Africa’s rich history and contemplate its implications for the present and future.

Kianga van Oerle – from the Sacred Heart College in Johannesburg, who attended the opening, said South Africa’s heart beats to the rhythm of change, the melody of hope and the symphony of possibility. “Let this be our compass in directing a tomorrow where dreams know no bounds and justice knows no limits.”

She also highlighted the legacy of art that Navan has created, saying: “His work portrays inspiration and gives a voice to those whose names go down. “It is up to us, the youth of today, to highlight and follow in the footsteps of his artwork, his creation; for our hands, the hands of the youth, hold not only the capability to transform but the destiny of a nation reborn.” IB

5 ways to get a holiday workout

1

2

WITHOUT GOING TO THE GYM

WHEN YOU’RE ON HOLIDAY, INDULGING IN THE LOCAL FOOD AND DRINKS SEEMS INEVITABLE. BECAUSE YOU ARE SO BUSY EXPLORING A NEW CITY, NO ONE HAS TIME TO GO TO THE GYM. BUT NOW YOU CAN FOLLOW THESE EASY STEPS TO THE PERFECT VACATION WORKOUT.

1

Lounging by the beach

If your vacation destination boasts sandy shores and sparkling waves, take advantage of the natural playground. Why not? There’s nothing as refreshing as beachside walks and relaxing on the sand. The waves, the breeze, the sun’s rays hitting your body to give you that vitamin D boost you need. Exploring a new coastal destination is another good way of keeping fit. The beach and sea cliff walks will keep you energised, refreshed, and ready to enjoy every minute of your vacation.

2 Morning stretches over your hotel view

Kickstart your mornings with a few

stretches from your hotel room, letting the breeze in through the window to awaken your body and mind. Start with stretching your hands, some gentle neck rolls, shoulder stretches, and arm circles to release tension accrued during sleep. You don’t want it to feel like heavy work because you are probably going to hit the gym hard when you get home. Complete your routine with a few deep breaths and a spinal twist to invigorate your senses and prepare for the day ahead.

3 Retreat to nature

Outdoor activities are an integral part of your holiday. Your body needs some blood flow and flexibility to promote blood circulation. If hiking is on your list, go for it. Take bush walks

40 INBOUNDSA / April 2024
FITNESS

and wander along forest paths and through lush meadows as you soak up the sights and sounds of the wilderness. Engage in simple yoga to refine your mindfulness and inner peace. Unwind with a leisurely bike ride along scenic routes, drinking in the benefits of nature as you pass through serene, picturesque landscapes. End your night with restorative foam baths.

4 Swimming

In summer, the sun can be uncomfortably hot, so you are going to find yourself in the pool if you love the feel of water hitting your body. Swimming is a great activity that is excellent for multiple muscle groups. Simply enjoy leisurely floating and treading water. Make it cool and

Instagram worthy with nice swimwear and hot shades!

5 Cycling

Most cities in the world have rent-a-bike shops. Not sure how, but many travellers ride their bikes holding an ice cream cone. Cycling is a fun way of sightseeing while getting in a good workout for your legs. If cycling is not your thing, try dancing. Put on some music and have a mini dance, or learn a new cultural dance, pausing along the way for impromptu street performances After all dancing is a fun way to get your heart rate up and burn calories while enjoying yourself. Spontaneity is a great ice-breaker and leads to new meetings. IB

Boxing THE BENEFITS BEYOND THE PUNCHES

BOXING IS ON THE RISE, AND BOXING FOR FITNESS HAS BECOME VERY POPULAR OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS. WHILE THERE IS NOTHING MORE EXHILARATING AND SATISFYING THAN LETTING IT ALL GO ON A HEAVY BAG FOR 30 MINUTES, THERE ARE MANY OTHER BENEFITS, WRITES BOXING COACH SHIREEN FABING.

The obvious ones include getting stronger and faster, building lean muscle, and weight loss, but it’s important to talk about the benefits that nobody sees.

FITNESS
42 INBOUNDSA / April 2024

Continuously throwing punches is a lot more complex than it looks. It’s using the brain in tandem with your arms, shoulders, hips, lungs and feet. When all that happens, the body releases endorphins, which we trainers call the “feel-good hormones” or the “mood boosters”. These are the hormones that help decrease tension and anxiety, help alleviate depression and anger, and improve our overall mood. Giving your all in a class will leave you wanting more or, at the very least, make you smile!

I’ve been boxing for around 15 years, and if you had told me back then that I’d be coaching today and that I’d have 14 sanctioned amateur bouts under my belt, I would ask you what you’re smoking! My journey started with a colleague who began boxing, and every day, for weeks, she would shout over the cubicles: “So, are you coming with me today?” sometimes multiple times per day and yes, she got on my damn nerves! Eventually, I told her that if I went one time, she wasn’t allowed to ask me again. She agreed, and off we went.

WOW! I had never felt so at home in a sports environment. For the first time in my life, I wanted to go back to a gym! And I did so the very next day. Purchased my own gloves, wraps and a skipping rope.

Watching the progression of clients is why I coach. Some clients walk into the gym for the first time feeling intimidated and lacking selfesteem, and as the weeks go on, I watch them change. They walk taller, talk to other boxers, and give knuckles at the end of class, and as they get better and stronger, their energy changes. Feedback from clients who are victims of violence and abuse use boxing as a release for all the trauma their bodies are holding on to, and watching that release is a beautiful and priceless thing.

Boxing is still unfortunately seen by some as violent or barbaric. However, whether you want to do it just for fitness or you want to step into the ring with an opponent eventually, you heard it here first: Boxing will introduce you to a version of yourself you never knew existed. IB

A MELTING POT OF AFRICAN, ARAB AND FRENCH INFLUENCE

MOROCCO IS FAST BECOMING A SOUGHT-AFTER DESTINATION ON THE CONTINENT. THIS DIVERSE COUNTRY, WITH ITS BLEND OF ANCIENT TRADITIONS AND MODERN ALLURE, OFFERS TRAVELLERS DISTINCT EXPERIENCES IN ITS MAJOR CITIES, MAKING IT IMMENSELY POPULAR. FROM DIVERSE LANDSCAPES AND DESERT ADVENTURES TO HISTORICAL SIGHTS, MOROCCO HAS IT ALL.

While reaching this North African gem from South Africa can be tricky, it is gaining in popularity among tourists, making it a must on any traveller’s bucket list.

Unique charm of major cities

Morocco is a melting pot of African, Berber, Arab, and French influences, creating a unique cultural tapestry. Each major city reflects this diversity. Marrakesh is known as the Red City because most of its buildings were made using beaten clay and were built during the Almohads’ residence. Tangier is known as the White City because of the immaculate white houses enclosed within the city. Tangier is one of the oldest cities of Morocco and is just 36km from the Spanish town of Tarifa by ferry, making it a key transit point for the trade

between Africa and Europe. Finally, Chefchaouen is known as the Blue City. It’s been rumoured that the Jewish community in the area grew as people fled Nazi persecution during World War II. It was then that blue was painted on the walls, floors and steps as a religious practice to represent the colour of the sky and connect the city to heaven and God. These colourful cities offer distinct views, showcasing different facets of Morocco’s beauty.

Culinary delights

Moroccan cuisine is a feast for the senses, renowned for aromatic spices, delicious tagines and mouth-watering pastries. Influenced by Arabic, Andalusian, and Mediterranean flavours, with elements of sub-Saharan Africa and Middle Eastern cuisine, the food in Morocco is a delicious blend. Indulge in traditional dishes like couscous,

tagine, and harira soup. Mechoui, a succulent whole-roasted lamb, is a festive dish often enjoyed during special occasions. Seafood lovers can indulge in the traditional chermoula, grilled fish coated with a zesty herb and spice marinade. At the same time, those with a sweet tooth should try Moroccan desserts like chebakia (sesame and honey cookies) and maakouda (deep-fried potato cakes). Concluding a meal, aromatic mint tea is elegantly served in ornate glasses — an essential part of the Moroccan culinary tradition.

Diverse landscapes for adventure

Morocco boasts a diverse landscape, from the snow-capped Atlas Mountains to the golden beaches along the Atlantic coast and the iconic Sahara Desert. Adventure seekers can hike through lush valleys, explore ancient kasbahs around the Atlas Mountains, or embark on a camel trek into the heart of the Sahara. Whether it’s mountain escapades, coastal retreats, or desert experiences, Morocco caters to every type of traveller.

Vibrant souks

Morocco’s markets, or souks, are vibrant hubs filled with colours, scents, and lively sounds. Marrakesh, Fez, and other cities feature intricate alleys leading to bustling markets. Visitors can immerse themselves in diverse goods, from woven carpets and textiles to handcrafted ceramics and fragrant spices. Navigating these markets provides a sensory-rich experience, offering a glimpse into Morocco’s rich heritage.

Architectural wonders

Morocco showcases a wealth of architectural marvels, from the intricate tilework of palaces to historic kasbahs and riads. Notable sites include the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, ancient medinas in Marrakesh and Fez, UNESCO World Heritage sites like Volubilis and the Kasbahs, and the Madrasas in Fez. Each architectural gem narrates a chapter of Morocco’s rich history.

Intriguing, diverse, and endlessly captivating, Morocco is a must-visit thanks to its unique blend of tradition and modernity. Every corner of Morocco invites exploration, making it a compelling destination for those seeking a truly immersive travel experience - and with routes from South Africa on Air France, Morocco is easier than ever to visit for South Africans. HOME TO THE rich and famous

THE ATHENAEUM HOTEL

KNOWN AS TINSELTOWN ON THAMES, THIS EXQUISITE HOTEL IN LONDON IS KNOWN TO HAVE HAD FAMOUS GUESTS INCLUDING MARLON BRANDO, ROBERT REDFORD, LIZA MINNELLI, AND HARRISON FORD. EVEN FORMER PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA FAMOUSLY DELAYED HIS MOTORCADE TO RETRACE HIS STEPS TO PROPERLY GREET THE DOORMAN, JOHN.

with a special anniversary coming up, we realised we deserved a treat. Then my conscience spoke: What about your carbon footprint? Fortunately, a five-star hotel in London is determined to make travel as eco-friendly as possible.

I wanted to stay somewhere special after a West End show. The Athenaeum ticked all the boxes. The same family has owned it for more than a century, but The Rank Organisation used to manage it to accommodate stars working at Pinewood and Ealing studios, including Sean Connery, Cary Grant, Robert Mitchum, and Elizabeth Taylor.

52 INBOUNDSA / April 2024 INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

I also remembered a story about Russell Crowe being scolded by the Executive Manager Sally Bulloch. The usually pugnacious Crowe was told Housekeeping wasn’t allowed to touch his personal possessions, which he’d left scattered around his suite, so it was making their life hell. He meekly went upstairs, tidied up, then returned to the bar, where he and Sally settled down for an excellent evening.

My husband, Glenn, and I set out to experience glamour combined with a sense of fun; we strolled through Green Park, emerging on Piccadilly. The Athenaeum Hotel and Residences are at 116, which is also the name of the restaurant. It is easy to recognise the hotel with its living green wall.

We needed to get to the theatre by 7.30 pm, but instead of a rushed evening meal, we chose afternoon tea and booked a savoury as well as the classic version. Either would have been enough for two people but the presentation and flavours were so tempting we sampled everything; very little went back to the kitchen.

One of my favourite actresses, Joanna Lumley, had tea at The Athenaeum not long ago. Tea? Not a smidge of Bolly, dahling? Ah, that would be telling! Although the staff never reveal the identity of A-listers currently staying there, they don’t mind talking about past events.

As we reviewed the show over drinks and snacks, we wondered why we didn’t do this more often. It’s like living in Cape Town and only going up Table Mountain when you have out-of-town visitors. Talking of South Africa, Madiba endeared himself to staff by always greeting them by name when he stayed here. Doorman John, who is retired now, still loves to tell the story of Madiba.

Madiba had rushed past to get to his motorcade and walked right pass him. Then suddenly, Madiba stopped, turned back, and walked up to him: “Oh, I’m so sorry, John, I didn’t greet you. How are you?”. John’s picture still hangs in the reception area of the hotel.

Breakfast in 116 offered many options to give us the energy to carry on exploring London. The Royal Academy, Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace are all within walking distance.

Our short visit didn’t give us time to explore all the hotel offers – there is a spa and gym in the basement. The bar is famous for its range of whiskies. The Athenaeum Hotel would suit a couple wanting a romantic break. The adjoining Residences suit families and will accommodate a dog too. Steven Spielberg was a regular; he stayed there when he edited ET, Close Encounters and Raiders of the Lost Ark. IB

Cullinan:

A VICTORIAN GEM IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

CULLINAN IS TRULY LIKE A GEM IN THE DESERT – ONE MINUTE YOU JUST SEE FARMS AND ISOLATED SHOPS ON THE ROAD, AND ON ENTERING THE TOWN, IT’S A WHOLE NEW WORLD FULL OF CHARACTER AND HISTORY. ALSO, THE PLACE WHERE THE WORLD’S BIGGEST DIAMOND WAS FOUND, AS GAVIN PRINS FOUND OUT WHEN HE VISITED THE SMALL VILLAGE.

Cullinan, situated in the Dinokeng region, about a 30-minute drive east of Pretoria, is renowned for yielding some of the largest diamonds ever discovered. Cullinan was a pioneering mining settlement that made its name with the discovery in 1905 of the world’s biggest diamond,

the 3,106-carat Cullinan Diamond. This alone makes Cullinan a fascinating destination, but it has a lot more to offer.

The biggest attraction is the infamous Oak Avenue, a favourite destination of travellers and the heart of this Victorian village. It is a colourful

street loaded with giant oak trees, lovingly restored old houses, art galleries, quirky shops, cafés and old-style restaurants.

My first stop was The Hive Wedding and Function Venue – home to an old church built by famous British architect Sir Herbert Baker in 1908 – a dominant figure in South African architecture between 1892 and 1912. It is also a restaurant where owner Anita Rossouw treated us to one of the best pizzas in town.

A few steps down the road, the craziness starts. First up, for pancakes made with love, is Harrie’s Pancakes. As Greek as It Gets restaurant is, as the name suggests, a Greek food paradise. Lemon Tree Café is famous for its lemon meringue tart, and if you are in the mood for something light, then Whispering Oaks is the place for you.

Another favourite is Jan Harmsgat se Agterplaas (“Jan Harmsgat’s back garden”). This garden gallery also houses a famous barnyard theatre.

Other unique Cullinan features include the Diamond Hub, the place to view replicas of Cullinan’s most famous diamonds, and the opportunity to watch a diamond-cutting demonstration.

You can visit some original stone miners’ cottages, a beautiful old train station and the prestigious nine-hole Cullinan Golf Course. A somewhat poignant reminder of another chapter in Cullinan’s history is the Cullinan Mystique

This 1904 historic building is home to a collection of murals painted by Italian prisoners of war during World War II, while the Underwater Prison commemorates those prisoners and internees who died during their internment.

THE HIVE WEDDING AND CONFERENCE VENUE, CULLINAN

Situated in the quant little town of Cullinan, The Hive venue and restaurant is truly a beehive of activities. Enter as a stranger and leave as a friend. With a bar and restaurant, the Hive offers the best pizza, burgers and so much more.

The venue which houses the famous church built by Sir Herbert Baker, can host any party, wedding or function. The Hive is home to a fresh food market every first weekend of the month where you can enjoy locally made products.

The restaurant is open 7 days a week. Call 072 084 0799 to make a booking.

Cullinan Mine tour

McHardy House Museum is the original 1903 home of the first mine manager, William McHardy, and is full of Victorian, Edwardian, artdeco and art-nouveau furniture; also well worth a visit is the beautiful, old stone St George’s Anglican Church.

Adrenalin junkies, pay attention: The Adventure Zone Cullinan is where individuals, families, and groups get their adrenalin surging by gorge gliding, abseiling, quad biking, trying their hand at archery, horse riding, and lots more, while Fundani Tours offers a bicycling tour through town. For a hike, birdwatching, or game viewing, head to Windy Brow Nature Reserve.

If you’d like to stay overnight, Cullinan has lots of charming accommodation, from quaint B&Bs and guest houses to smart hotels and game lodges. There’s certainly no shortage of options, but my personal recommendation would be the KwaThabisile Game Lodge just outside town, nestled in the Leewkloof Valley Conservancy. IB

One hour north-east of Johannesburg and Pretoria lies the warm, big-sky region of Dinokeng, source of the world’s largest diamond. An area that sparkles with natural, cultural, and historical attractions.

In the heart of Dinokeng you will find KwaThabisile Bush Retreat nestled in the 200 ha Leeuwkloof Valley Conservancy.

4. Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum – located in Rayton, just outside Cullinan, visitors can experience how the agricultural history of South Africa developed from the Stone Age to the year 1945.

EASY COMMUTE, SAFE AND MAGICAL

LIVING ABROAD
58 INBOUNDSA / April 2024

NEW YORK OFFERS WORLD CLASS ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCES FOR VISITORS OF ALL AGES, FROM ICONIC PLACES LIKE TIME SQUARE, THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING, GROUND ZERO AND BROOKLYN BRIDGE TO WANDERING THROUGH HISTORIC AREAS LIKE HARLEM, CHINATOWN AND TRIBECA.

How long have you been living in this city?

I have been living in New York for a year and half now.

Why did you move here?

After leaving my job in South Africa, where I worked at eNCA as the Broadcast Manager, I got this amazing opportunity to move to NYC to work as an International Correspondent based at the United Nations. Why would I throw away such an amazing opportunity?

What do you love about this city?

It’s so difficult to explain, but New York is an absolute gem. I love that there is always something to do here, there’s never a dull moment. I love the ease of commuting, the safety and the people. New York is a magical city in every sense of the word.

What do you find challenging about this city?

The most challenging thing for me has been making real friends. Despite being a magical city New York can also be very cold. I often tell people that New York is a city of millions but can also be a city of few. I am lucky that I’ve had quite a few people who have really been by my side in the city making living here easier. Living in NYC and visiting NYC are two different experiences and I think that would be true for any city one moves to.

Tell us a bit about the culture?

What culture? There are so many -I live in East Harlem, which is very Latino, which I love. The culture of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico is so similar to Cape Town that it’s often easy to find food that’s similar.

What do you miss about home?

Everything! But mostly the food from home.

There is nothing that comes close to the food from South Africa, even people I’ve met in NYC that have travelled to South Africa before will mention our food. I am not ashamed to say that I miss the Spur. One thing you realise when you live outside of South Africa is that our country is a special place and there is really no other place that comes close to the warmth, friendliness and spirit of the South African people. I am so proud to be South African.

What do you do when you miss home?

Make a home cooked meal. More often than not, I put on some South African music and hit the kitchen and cook up a storm and before I know it I’ve cooked for a whole population.

Advice to someone wanting to emigrate to this city?

Be prepared and open-minded about life. Things are very different but also very similar in certain aspects. NYC can be a tough city to live in, but it’s what you make of it, and you have to craft your experience for you. Ensure that financially you can afford to live in NYC, it is one of the most expensive cities in the US to live in. IB

TÜRKIYE

AS SINGER CHAD SAAIMAN PLANS TO WALK DOWN THE AISLE WITH HIS PARTNER, SAVANNAH SMITH, THIS MONTH, HE SHARES WITH US THE LAST HOLIDAY THE TWO WENT ON TOGETHER.

What I loved about the country was… the fact that there was a great balance of beach and city, which made for a fantastic experience filled with moments of both relaxation and exploration.

The people were…friendly, mostly. In the city of Istanbul, we found it extremely busy and industrious.

What I found challenging about the country was…managing the heat (we were there in peak summer).

My next destination is…possibly Zanzibar or Italy.

I don’t travel without:

iPhone – to capture the moments and keep in communication with my loved ones.

Headphones – what is a trip without great playlists filled with incredible songs?

Ray Bans – the coolest, easiest to travel with, and most versatile sunglasses for summer.

Sneakers – a pair of comfortable, stylish, and sporty sneakers for the long walks exploring, and another white pair for the nights out.

Power bank – for effective travel, you’re either getting a SIM (like we did), roaming or relying on WIFI spots. Either way, a dead phone battery is not an option. IB

YOU DON’T NEED TO DRINK EVERYDAY TO BE AN

INSPIRATION
alcoholic
62 INBOUNDSA / April 2024

“IN THREE YEARS, THE GIFTS OF RECOVERY HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLE. MY BUSINESSES ARE THRIVING, AND MY RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS HAVE NEVER BEEN BETTER. I HAVE MET A WONDERFUL, SUPPORTIVE PARTNER, AND I’M TRAVELLING THE WORLD, SEEING LIFE DIFFERENTLY AND APPRECIATING MY EXPERIENCES.”

Three years ago, I checked myself into rehab for alcoholism. While I didn’t drink every day, my binge drinking made me an alcoholic. My life had become somewhat unmanageable, and I wasn’t living my best 10 out of 10 life.

I didn’t realise that if you don’t drink every day you can still be an alcoholic. I thought an alcoholic was a person on the street who drinks every night. This is simply not the case. I would go out to get smashed at a restaurant, get home and drink everything in the bar. Then I realised this was becoming a habit three times a week. I could barely get out of bed. I gradually came to understand that this was a problem.

For the first 18 months, but I worked daily on therapy, recovery maintenance, aftercare, and step work. After that period, I felt I had more control over my life to help others with addiction, and I became a sponsor.

Over the past year therapy has been less intense, but I continue to work constantly on staying sober and becoming the best me I can be.

In three years, the gifts of recovery have been incredible. My businesses are thriving, and my relationships with family and friends have never been better. I have met a wonderful, supportive partner, and I’m travelling the world, seeing life differently and appreciating my experiences.

Here is the thing: I am fully present in my life and proud of my achievements. I feel genuinely alive.

This journey hasn’t been and still isn’t easy. Losing my beloved father was an enormous test of my self-control, but instead of drowning my sorrows, I dealt with my immense feelings of grief through sobriety and worked through it with a clear mind.

My message on my three-year celebration of sobriety is this: overcoming addiction is possible, but it takes work. Taking control of your life is your choice, and you hold your destiny in your hands with the help of God.

My family and friends have supported and loved me throughout. All the counsellors, fellow recovery friends and my sponsors have walked this journey with me. It was tough at Houghton House Rehab, but it was an incredible health facility nonetheless.

Remember, you don’t have to do this alone. There are millions of people dealing with various addictions daily and struggling to reach success in recovery.

I am grateful for sobriety and thank God the Almighty for my rescue. I hope this article takes away the stigma of addiction, and if it can help just one person, it would be deeply rewarding.

The day my father died, I committed to continuing this path and making you proud, Dad: this I re-pledge on my third anniversary. I am a proud man! IB

ENTREPRENEURSHIP:

A powerful tool in creating freedom for the youth

If you’re not an entrepreneur yet, you may just be missing out. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), nearly two in every three youth between the ages of 18 and 34 in sub-Saharan Africa are embracing entrepreneurship as their ticket to financial freedom, wealth, independence, and a lasting legacy that will inspire generations to come.

South Africa is no different, with a marked increase in entrepreneurism and side hustles in recent years. But entrepreneurship is not just a second-choice career option for those unable to gain formal employment –instead, it’s become the gateway to allowing youth to shake off the constraints and boredom of traditional nine to five jobs, and instead pursue their ambitions of becoming the next generation of local millionaires and success stories.

In fact, a recent study by Momentum and Unilever found that as many 20% of households with a side hustle were already earning over R87,000 a month. Far from just being a means to supplement monthly income, this demonstrates that the entrepreneurial spirit is truly alive and well in South Africa.

For Generation Z, born between the 1990s and early 2000s, entrepreneurship is a particularly attractive career choice. Totalling around four in every ten people in the country, this is a generation known for challenging the status quo, and questioning tradition or ‘the way things have always been done’.

If you’re a member of this generation, you may demonstrate a natural affinity for entrepreneurship as a risk-taker, disruptor, and innovator, who will enjoy the freedom and flexibility to not only set your own schedule and work from wherever you’d like, but to also experiment and watch your ideas come to life.

By becoming an entrepreneur, you can take control of your destiny, make your own decisions, pursue your true passion, and enjoy the pride and satisfaction that comes with building a thriving business from the ground up. Likewise, by creating a successful company, you can realise your dream of establishing a beloved brand that positively impacts the people and communities around you through providing a much-needed product or service, or creating jobs and incomes for hundreds or even thousands of breadwinners.

These are all critical driving factors and motivators, but there are still two that are perhaps even more important. First, remember that an entrepreneur’s earning potential is effectively unlimited. For example, according to the 2023 State of Entrepreneurship in South Africa Survey, nearly 40% of the respondents reported that they had started as many as five businesses. Meanwhile, nearly a third were achieving an annual turnover of between R10 million and R50 million from their main business.

Second, and just as critically, being an entrepreneur doesn’t carry any entry requirements. Anyone can be successful, regardless of your educational qualifications, or your background and circumstances. In fact, even beyond having a groundbreaking business idea, the most important determinant of an entrepreneur’s success is your determination and resilience.

Just consider the example of Theo Baloyi from Hammanskraal, who, at the age of just 34 years, has already built one of the country’s must successful shoe empires, Bathu Shoes. Founded in Alexandra, a township in Johannesburg, in 2015, the company now boasts over 300 employees across its 32

nationwide stores. Then there’s other South African trailblazers such as Portia Mngomezulu of Portia M Skin Solutions, Ryan Bachar of NetFlorist, and Irfan Pardesi and Hina Kassam of ACM Gold, who’ve turned their ideas into gold.

Each of these individuals took a gamble on themselves, and used the power of entrepreneurism to unlock their shackles and the limitations of answering to others, enjoying newfound power and freedom as business leaders and hustlers.

And notably, according to visionary businessman and entrepreneurial expert Zunaid Moti, the time is ripe for youth to embrace entrepreneurship – all that’s needed is an idea, combined with the know-how and the willingness to take the leap.

As a young child growing up in a family where money was tight, Moti always knew he’d be a millionaire – even recording it in a junior school essay. Today, he is not only a millionaire, but one of the country’s most renowned billionaires, having founded the successful Moti Group of Companies.

Paying the benefit of his hard-gained wisdom and business experience forward, Moti founded free online business intervention and mentorship programme MotiMoves in 2023. Every month, Moti now hosts a webinar designed to equip aspiring entrepreneurs with the knowledge, skills, practical tips, and resources they need to succeed, while also inviting well-known business leaders and celebrity guests to join and share their tips and advice.

But MotiMoves doesn’t stop there. Moti has put his money where his mouth is by creating a R30 million investment pot to help launch promising start-ups, and sponsor up-and-coming talent in the creative and sports industries.

He has already invested millions of rands towards kickstarting new businesses and launching successful careers. Best of all, registered MotiMoves members stand a chance of partnering with Moti himself in their next venture, with the opportunity to receive a R50,000 investment towards game-changing and high-potential business ideas.

This represents an even greater opportunity to turn your passion into profit, while receiving the benefit of mentorship and support from Moti and his team. All you need to do is visit his website at www. zunaid-moti.co.za/competition, register for MotiMoves, and submit your business proposal. But remember, a successful proposal requires more than simply an idea; it needs a well-thought-out plan that demonstrates your understanding of the market, your business model, and your path to profitability.

Youth’s time is now, and you can make it happen. All you need to do is take a chance on yourself.

VENTURING INTO THE WORLD OF BRICKS AND MORTAR REQUIRES CAREFUL PLANNING AND RESEARCH. SKIPPING OUT ON DUE DILIGENCE AND A FEASIBILITY STUDY CAN TURN YOUR DREAM PROPERTY INTO A FINANCIAL NIGHTMARE. THE KEY CULPRIT? NOT DOING YOUR HOMEWORK, WRITES ZIMBABWEAN INVESTMENT CONSULTANT MALVIN CHIDZONGA.

Real estate’s appeal is undeniable. However, this perception of stability often overshadows the underlying complexities. Real estate is a longterm game, demanding significant upfront investment and ongoing costs. The market is subject to external forces like any other investment vehicle. Economic downturns, interest rate fluctuations, abundant land in places like Africa and even local infrastructure projects can significantly impact property values and rental yields.

So, what exactly happens when you dive headfirst into real estate without proper preparation?

• Overpaying for the property: one of the most common mistakes is simply paying more than a property is worth. Without understanding the local market, recent sales data and comparable properties, you might be swayed by a seller’s inflated asking price. This eats into your potential profits and makes it harder to sell later at a fair market value.

• Blindsided by hidden costs: buying a property is just the first step. Ongoing costs like property taxes, maintenance, repairs, insurance and potential vacancy periods can eat into your rental income or force you to dip into your savings. Failing to factor in these expenses beforehand can lead to negative cash flow and financial burden.

• Picking the wrong location: location, location, location – this mantra holds in real estate. A seemingly charming property could be located in a declining neighbourhood with high vacancy rates, limited rental potential or prone to flooding.

• Ignoring structural issues: a beautiful facade can hide a multitude of sins. Skipping

a thorough inspection by a qualified professional could leave you saddled with expensive repairs for structural problems, faulty electrical wiring or a leaky roof. These unforeseen costs can derail your financial plans and leave your property unrentable.

• Unprepared for unexpected events: the real estate market is not static. Economic downturns, interest rate fluctuation and even changes in government regulations can all affect property values and rental income. Without a financial buffer and contingency plans, these unexpected events can leave you vulnerable and force you to sell at a loss.

Real estate contracts can be complex legal documents. Don’t just skim through them – understand every clause. Here are some key areas to pay close attention to:

• Inspection clauses: ensure the contract allows for thorough inspections, including for hidden defects, pests and potential structural issues.

• Repair responsibilities: clearly define who is responsible for repairs – landlord versus tenant – for specific issues.

• Termination clauses: understand the terms for terminating the lease with a tenant, including potential penalties or notice periods.

• Warranties and guarantees: be aware of any warranties the seller offers and understand their limitations. IB

TMeet your Match WITH THIS INNOVATIVE DATING APP

IT WAS CREATED TO TRANSFORM HOW ‘SINGLES’ FIND LOVE, AND IT HAS PRODUCED ITS NEW INTERNATIONAL TV COMMERCIAL WITH THE HELP OF A SOUTH AFRICAN DIRECTOR, ROBERT DOS SANTOS. A GROUNDBREAKING DATING APP, PLANET THETA, IS NOW TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM.

his app is unique and much safer than other popular dating apps. It leverages virtual reality (VR) technology. “You put on VR goggles, and you can see the person in VR and talk to them instead of only seeing pictures of them. It also helps that the first dates can be in safe spaces from home instead of meeting completely unknown strangers in public,” says Robert in an interview with InBound SA

Awesome right? In this day and age, safety rings a bell before anything; people are moving towards spaces and innovations that are much safer. We are in an era where safety is dominant and questioned a lot. This app is here to disrupt the conventional dating scene, offering a safer and more immersive experience.

Planet Theta App, spearheaded by inspirational founder Charlie Southall, and overseen by Dan Walsh, reached out to Robert to construct a trailblazing commercial to launch the brand. The creative Dos Santos said that when creating the visuals for the advert, he was inspired by his first relationship and how that could have worked out. “I wrote the lyrics to the music of the commercial

based on that experience,” he outlined.

Robert, the mastermind behind the commercial of this app in South Africa, says he ventured into filmmaking after an unconventional experience: having a gun pointed at his head. Despite this horror story, he has come through and made his way up in his industry. He credits Tumblr as having been a major source of inspiration for him.

Reflecting on his experiences with the platform, Dos Santos acknowledges the vast pool of untapped artistic talent fuelling his creativity. He also believes in being around a dedicated team that is incredible and ready to achieve the best.

He trusts the app will help many people and hopes those who use it find love and happiness. It’s more than just an app; it’s a space for meaningful connections and life-transforming experiences.

The dating app industry is developing at a rapid rate, and it is helpful to know there are innovative apps like Theta, employing the highest digital quality, that are also looking out for their clients’ safety. IB

The power of air:

THE MACBOOK PRO

AS A GADGET EDITOR, YOU’D THINK I’D HAVE IT ALL FIGURED OUT WHEN CHOOSING MY TECH. I MEAN, I’M THE ONE WHO ADVISES PEOPLE ON THIS SORT OF THING FOR A LIVING. BUT WHEN THE TIME CAME FOR ME TO PICK BETWEEN THE MACBOOK AIR AND THE MACBOOK PRO, I FOUND MYSELF IN A PECULIAR SORT OF TECH-INDUCED LIMBO.

The decision was challenging. I spent days, nay weeks, oscillating between tabs online and making what felt like countless pilgrimages to the iStore.

In the end, I went for the MacBook Pro. Why? Those extra ports are a godsend—no more carrying a bag of dongles like some medieval alchemist. The additional memory was also a clincher. Working with large video files is no joke; I needed all the firepower I could get.

But then came my moment of folly—the colour choice. In a lapse of judgment, I went for the midnight hue. It looked sleek and mysterious until I started using the device. Every fingerprint and smudge stood out against the dark background, turning my sleek MacBook into a crime scene investigation of my snack habits.

You might be wondering why you even splash out on a MacBook when plenty of decent laptops are out there for a fraction of the price. If you’re deep into video editing, photography, or any

creative field, the difference in performance and integration within the Apple ecosystem can be a game-changer. It’s not just about having a laptop; it’s about having a tool that fits seamlessly into your workflow.

Now, let’s talk money. Yes, the price tag on a MacBook Pro can make your wallet weep somewhat. But thanks to a range of payment options available in South Africa, like PayFlex, MobiCred, and the one I went with, Float, the financial sting was spread out. Interest-free payments over six months? Yes, please. It made the extra 7,000 Rand for the Pro seem less daunting, especially considering the efficiency and productivity gains.

So here I am, armed with my MacBook Pro. I am slightly regretful of my colour choice but otherwise content. It’s an investment, sure. But it’s worth every penny for what it does for my work and the ease it brings to my creative process. Now, if only I could find a way to keep those pesky fingerprints at bay. IB

EGG & SMOKED TROUT BAGEL

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

• 500ml boiling water

• 30ml vinegar

• 4 eggs

• 4 bagels, toasted

• 100g smoked trout, thinly sliced

• 200g baby spinach, blanched

• 2 dill fronds, chopped

• 1 lemon

• salt and pepper to taste

METHOD

1. Pour the 500ml boiling

water and vinegar into a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Once the water starts boiling, reduce the heat to low. Crack open the eggs one at a time into separate ramekins or egg poaching cups.

Fierce, Fun + Fab

Dear Self,

Remember that guy with the puppy picture? I mean, come on, using a dog photo is practically cheating, right? Anyway, he’s into nature, cooking, sports, hanging out, travelling and the whole enchilada, just like me. Exciting to think about the adventures we could have together, KACHIN!

So, naturally, I dived headfirst into our first date with my classic Aries impulsiveness. Didn’t bother with reading his bio or doing some social media stalking. Act now, think later, you know?

YES! Size matters

WE HAVE ALL GONE THROUGH THEM. DATES GONE (TERRIBLY) WRONG. AND IF YOU’RE MARRIED TO YOUR FIRST DATE, SNAPS FOR YOU! BUT HERE, WE’RE ABOUT SHARING EXPERIENCES. NOT MALE BASHING. WELCOME TO THE FIRST OF MANY OF MY DATING STORIES.

Oh boy, let me tell you about that disaster of a first date. It was one of those last-minute decisions, him in town on a Friday night, me with a friend nearby. So, we decided to meet up down the road from where I was. My friend and I marched up to the place, my dreams and hopes of meeting Prince Charming soaring high!

As we approached the bar, I immediately recognised his face, but what about the rest of him? He was like a mini version of himself, so ridiculously short! It all happened so quickly: the dude grabbed me and twirled me around in a circle like a scene straight out of an ‘80s rom-com. OMG, I nearly died! Thankfully, my mate and I practically share the same brain. We locked eyes and sprinted down the road as far as our legs would take us. We stopped and laughed and laughed and laughed about what a giant b*tch I was for ditching this mini dude within the first 10 seconds of our date. I just couldn’t go through with

it. My shallow self took complete control, and I’m guilty as charged.

Yes, I confess, I’m Miss Vain on this one. I simply couldn’t bring myself to explain that Shorty and I would never be a match. All my dreams and hopes shattered with the realisation that I had painted a movie in my head starring that handsome-looking man. Unfortunately, I belong to the brigade of women who say ‘no-no’ to super tall or super short men.

I know, I know, I made peace with the fact I’ll probably burn in hell for dropping him like a fly on a busy Friday night street. I’m fully blaming society for the social expectations I’ve been brainwashed by, but I’m also taking total personal responsibility for my unacceptable behaviour. My action without a doubt hurt someone’s feelings and I should have faced reality and come clean. But hey, you only live once, right? Who has time to be civil in this harsh dating world?!

Most people give up reading after the first paragraph, so if you’ve made it this far to the end, Congra-tu-la-tions people. I’m proud of your curiosity and commitment to allowing me to entertain you with my dating stories.

You’re welcome. IB

NOTE TO SELF:

BEFORE AGREEING TO MEET IN PERSON, LET’S ADD ‘WHAT’S YOUR HEIGHT?’ TO THE LIST OF PRE-DATE QUESTIONS. IT’S CALLED “SETTING REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS” NOT “SURPRISE PACKAGE DELIVERY” – LOLZ!

LOVE AT FIRST FLIGHT

What is it about?

Love at First Flight tells the story of an air-traffic controller who meets a pilot, leading to a fake dating pact, and a lot of crossed wires in their communications, giving rise to unexpected consequences.

What was the inspiration behind this book?

When I started writing this book, I had no plans of writing a character on the spectrum, but I received an autism diagnosis whilst writing this. And so, the character of Pippa was born.

Who is the book aimed at?

Anyone and everyone who enjoys a good rom-com. In fact, I’m finding that more and more men are coming out and confessing to enjoying a good romance these days. And why shouldn’t they?

What is the general message of the book?

Acceptance. Unconditional love. All the things we all want as humans.

OUR OTHER FAVOURITES

Set in a future Botswana, a cruel futuristic surveillance state where bodies are a governmentissued resource, this harrowing story is a twisty, nail-biting commentary on power and bodily autonomy. In this devastatingly timely debut novel, acclaimed novelist Tlotlo Tsamaase asks, just how far must a woman go to bring the whole system crashing down?

(Jacana Media)

Love and Fury traces a woman’s fierce love and righteous rage, unravelling entanglements that are at once tender and traumatic. Renowned South African crime writer Margie Orford offers candid revelations, both political and personal, which have shaped her life and influenced her writing. It entails surviving sexual assault, divorce, depression and personal loss.
