THIS STORY BLEW MY MIND

JENNA CLIFFORD, THE JEWELLER TO THE STARS, INVITED ME FOR A QUICK COFFEE (READ VODKA AND FRESH ORANGE JUICE). AS I SAT IN HER OFFICE, AN IRANIAN LADY, JENNA’S FRIEND, WALKS IN AND HER STORY BLEW ME AWAY.

August is Women’s Month and for the past three months, I have been looking for a story that will inspire women. Then, at Jenna Clifford’s, I met Sahel Khorasani who survived an abusive marriage, and when she wanted a divorce, her husband (now ex) had her arrested. She was sentenced to 30 lashes. When she was released, he regretted doing this to his wife. Her story blew me away.

The next strong woman is Fashion Designer David Tlale’s mom, Joyce, and it was incredible to hear how she shaped him into the successful man he is today. What a pleasure it was to interview him and hear him speak of his mom. And, with Kamala Harris hopefully still in the race for the White House by the time we go to print, I am inspired by these strong women, who, in addition to being ambassadors for the female gender, also represent all marginalised sections of our community.

For years, we have been teaching women skills on how to defend themselves against violence, bullies and work their way to the top. We have also been harsher on men who abuse women. The stats show that 1 in 4 women do not report their abuser to the police for fear of retribution.

Join me and the rest of the InBound SA team as we celebrate women this August.

Have a great month and stay healthy.

THIS MONTH’S BURNING QUESTION…

IS IT SAFE TO CROSS OVERLAND BORDERS?

ANSWER: Generally, yes. If you have your paperwork and stay friendly, there should not be a problem. It’s usually travellers that are rude who pick up problems at the border. There are lots of stories about scams and instances where you have to pay bribes to cross. Just keep calm and be polite.

“DON’T SHOOT. I’M BRITISH.”

We were young, brave, adventurous and stupid. It was in the 90’s. We lived in Blantyre, Malawi. There was a long weekend coming up. “Let’s drive to Île de Mozambique. It’s only 600kms from Malawi. It should not take us longer than 8 hours.” We all said yes. It took more like 24 hours. It was a terrible dirt road. You could not go into the bush for an emergency because of landmines. The Île de Mozambique was not a tropical paradise. It was a dump (in the mornings people went onto the

beach to take a dump). We could not find a guest house or restaurant. Ended up sleeping on the back of our double cabs. Attacked by thousands of mosquitos. “Don’t shoot, I‘m British,” shouted one of our buddies when he got woken up by a curious onlooker. We left the next morning and checked into a nice hotel on the Malawi side – 24 hours later.

A FESTIVE FLOP

December in New York City was a festive flop. My hotel room was a freezing icebox, and the “holiday market” was a crowded mess where I got pickpocketed. Unexpected snow left me in a wet coat and soggy shoes. But I found solace in a cosy cup of hot cocoa at a charming café. As I warmed up, I laughed at the absurdity of it all. The Christmas lights twinkled outside, and I realised even a disastrous trip can’t dim the city’s magic. I left with a funny story and a vow to pack warmer clothes next time!

TAXI NIGHTMARES IN EGYPT

I have been to Egypt numerous times, and I will say this – generally, there seems to be the assumption that as a foreigner, you are minted. A few taxi drivers attempted to charge me over R1 000 for trips less than 5km. (Needless to say I declined to pay these exorbitant bills.) On one occasion the taxi driver attempted to rack up miles/

kms and drove around in circles hoping I would not notice. When I did, he locked all the doors and refused to let me out. I eventually managed to jump out at a busy intersection while the vehicle was still moving. He gave chase, but I had a head start. Another time, I was followed by a taxi driver who thought that following me on both foot and vehicle would somehow be construed as charming. After taking refuge in a hotel lobby for several hours, he finally gave up and drove off.

A LODGE IN DESPAIR

My first trip to Limpopo from Johannesburg was quite an eye-opener. We booked what seemed like a charming lodge online, but upon arrival, we found a completely different story. The room was in disrepair, with stained linens, a leaky faucet, and an unpleasant odour. The promised “scenic view” was a construction site, and the wifi was non-existent. To top it off, the air conditioning was broken in the sweltering heat. Despite complaining to the management, nothing improved. Determined not to let it ruin the trip, we ventured out and discovered the beauty of Limpopo’s nature and friendly locals. The experience was a reminder to always check reviews and be prepared for surprises when travelling and don’t trust the word “charming”. Nosipho Memela, Johannesburg

Kayla Kim Kay RISING BUSINESS QUEEN

MORE THAN JUST A HAIR BRAND OWNER, KAYLA KIM KAY IS READY TO BUILD AN EMPIRE. HER EYES ARE FOCUSED ON THE BUSINESS BALL. SHE IS READY TO EMPOWER, SERVE, AND BE A MIRROR TO THE ONES WHO ARE LOOKING FOR THAT LIGHT.

Tell us about yourself as an influencer and an upcoming woman making waves in business?

I’m Kayla Kim AKA Kaylakimkay on social media. Now, although social media is a great marketing tool, my history is more than just content. I have studied fashion design and worked in the corporate space as a fashion buyer for 6 years. I’ve acquired sufficient knowledge both in university and the corporate space to equip me to run my current business. I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and hair products have always taken up space in my heart as it was a personal journey for me.

How did you start the business and what was the drive behind it?

I founded Afrocurl following my enthusiasm for natural hair. I wanted to create a range that is not only organic and vegan, but one that is affordable and accessible to curly girls. Afrocurl is environmentally friendly, vegan, cruelty-free as well as paraben-free. In saying that, the brand is designed for curls and coils and can certainly be used by all. We aim to keep both gents and ladies, boys’ and girls’ crowns happy. We hope that this stirs up the bold character within them, to be proud of their natural hair. “Your crown is in good hands”.

Growing up, I was bullied for the texture of my hair and for the fact that I didn’t conform to the trend of constantly straightening it. When I went natural in 2009, there were no products suitable for me in the market. This was when the Afrocurl idea came up. But it was only towards 2017 that I started planning my goals for this business. Social media and content creation have been part of that strategy. Although COVID-19 put a halt to so many things, that period was perfect for me to start creating and building a community online. The drive behind the brand is to empower young girls and boys to embrace and love their natural hair. The range helps take care of their natural hair and nurture it well.

How has your personal journey evolved over the past few years?

I have had many ups and downs, many sleepless nights. I went through a period of self-doubt, but also so much faith that God would see this project through. I am proud to say that within a span of a year and 8 months, we have moved warehouses three times because of the growth and support. I think more than anything, having a community of people who support your journey is something that has caused me to strive for the better. I always say there are very few coloured women in this space, and growing up I never had that role model. It’s so vital to see a reflection of

yourself as you grow up, and I would like to think that this is part of my purpose. I am a mirror to the young ones growing up and still finding their feet. Afrocurl is bigger than me and the journey is for all.

What strategies are you using to scale Afrocurl both locally and internationally?

To continue to be myself and share my journey on social media. Afrocurl ships internationally and we are grateful to be of service to the world. One of the strategies I can gladly share is that even though we are growing on social media, we are still in control of our pace. I appreciate the growth, however we all have to equip ourselves for growth as well. When we are ready at Afrocurl, we will expand and open up brick and mortar stores, however I do not want to bite more than I can chew at this very moment. Right now, our online store is doing well, and it’s preparing the entire team to learn, grow and equip us for the expansion.

Are there any new technologies or trends you are excited to incorporate into Afrocurl?

Regarding social media, we incorporate trends daily to grow both the brand and create product knowledge around it. This is something that I am learning every day, even regarding the machines that make and package Afrocurl.

What are the core values and principles you apply to your daily life that help you and your business grow?

I am a spiritual person. God is at the centre of my business. Afrocurl is more than just hair care. One of the core values is that this brand is for the people. I am here to empower everyone to be bold, dream big and do greater things. This brand is about breaking generational curses, societal norms and stereotypes of people of colour.

When did influencer marketing become more than just a hobby and turn into a real career for you?

As soon as I started. I come from a business background, and a few months before starting I made sure I monetised this, and created a community I call “My Hunays”. Fashion was something that did well on my platform and

was the testing ground to understand the support and influence of social media. As soon as my platform grew, I took a leap of faith and left my corporate job to pursue content creation and entrepreneurship.

What are some of the downsides of being a well-known influencer that people might not realise?

That public figures are human too, and we make mistakes. It just so happens that many of those mistakes are publicised. Cancel culture is so real in this space and can affect both your brand and your social image. There’s so much learning to be done as someone who consumes content from social media and uses it to build a brand.

You are such an authentic soul online. How did you navigate that without allowing societal pressure to overwhelm you?

This part was so hard at first. I would get bullied for this online. I still do. I filter out many words that may trigger me or other people. It’s so much easier said than done to take certain comments with a pinch of salt. However, I always remind myself what my purpose was for starting this, and I redirect my energy to what is positive as opposed to that one negative comment that tries to get to me. I have always been one to stand out, but on social media I needed to understand that I do not need to conform to anything. Being spiritual has also helped me so much with my journey. I rely on God and prayer to intervene when I feel at my lowest.

What’s the best advice you have for upcoming women entrepreneurs?

The biggest tip from me is to start by doing the research. My idea was formulated in 2009, and I only took action with it in 2022. After realising that the market was saturated, I needed to understand the core values of what sets Afrocurl apart from others. This is my journey, and no one can take that away from me. We always worry about capital, but I used my last salary to build my brand. Your dreams should scare you and mine certainly did. The biggest thing for me is having faith that my brand will grow. I believe in myself. Failing is part of that journey. Start with what you have and build. IB

5 MINUTES WITH Tumi Morake

SHE STRUGGLES TO KEEP A STRAIGHT FACE, AS WE SEE ON PRIME VIDEO’S LOL WITH TREVOR NOAH. IT IS THE AUTHENTICITY OF COMEDIAN AND ACTRESS TUMI MORAKE THAT KEEPS US DRAWN TO HER. EVEN THOUGH SHE CALLS ATLANTA, USA, HOME NOW, SHE WILL ALWAYS BE A SOUTH AFRICAN AT HEART, AS TEMO MPODI FOUND OUT IN A RECENT INTERVIEW.

Who in your family thinks you are NOT funny, no matter how hard you try?

I don’t think anyone survives my jokes. Even Mzansi’s funniest didn’t survive them, hence the LOL win.

Where do you get that funniness from? Dad side or mom side?

Dad’s side. Definitely. He’s got a killer sense of humour. He doesn’t even do Dad jokes.

The funniest moment you’ve had.

I rather enjoyed a WhatsApp screengrab sent by a fellow comedian, which read: Son: Dad, will you call me a taxi at 6am? Then at 6am the son receives a message from Dad: You’re a taxi.

What does the rest of 2024 hold in store for you?

Filming and travel. I have been enjoying touring the US with fellow comedians from Africa and will be doing more of that.

What was the last white lie you told and what was it?

I told my daughter I didn’t finish a series I am

meant to watch with her. I already have but I would just love to watch it again.

Craziest rumour you’ve heard?

Beyonce is a clone.

If you were not a comedian, what would you be?

I’d be a preacher of an online church that performs miracles and receives crypto as collection. IB

Manila Von Teez

Pronouns: He/They

Drag pronouns: She/Her

From: Elsies Rivier, Cape Town

Showmax’s NEW QUEENS ARE HERE TO SLAY!

BEAULAH: QUEENS VAN DIE KAAP IS A NEW REALITY TV SHOW FEATURING SOME OF CAPE TOWN’S MOST AWARD-WINNING DRAG QUEENS, INCLUDING SA’S GOT TALENT RUNNER UP MANILA VON TEEZ (REAL NAME VEON WENTZEL). TOLD IN GAYLE (WITH SUBTITLES), IT’S A JAW-DROPPING INTRODUCTION TO A WORLD OF EXTREME TRANSFORMATIONS, UNFORGETTABLE FASHION, WARRING HOUSES, OPPOSING QUEEN MOTHERS, WIG-GATES, AND SISTERHOOD.

How did you get to be part of the show?

I got a phone call from the producers to ask if I would audition. They came around, auditioned me, and then the director came around for second audition/ meeting, and then I got the news that I had been cast.

Why is it important to have a show like this on our local screens?

It is important to showcase the struggles that the queer community, and especially the POC community, goes through on a daily basis. Drag has always been a tool of activism, and one we take seriously. Through the show, the audience will get to see that drag is not just about a person dressing as a female, but it is an artform, one from which a career can be created, lives changed, people entertained and much more.

Who was your favourite drag queen on the show?

Kat Gilardi as Kat actually was the person who

put me in drag for the first time. Getting to experience this with her was a full circle moment. Definitely Ina as well, such a creative being and her drag is extremely unique and different.

What was a highlight for you in doing the show?

Spending a lot of time with all the Queens as we only really get to be with each other in the clubs or at gigs. The finale show of the season is also a highlight and I cannot wait for the world to be gagged by the fabulousness the audience will experience.

Tell us something about the other drag queens that we did not get to see on Showmax?

Difficult to say as we haven’t seen the season yet. But they definitely won’t be showing how all the Queens sweat and so their pantihose gives off an alternative aroma (haha), mine included. Also, no matter what, secretively, we have each other’s back. Come for one of us... and you will be taken on by all of us! IB

HIS LOVE AFFAIR WITH NEW YORK STARTED WHEN HE WAS A TEENAGER. JUST RECENTLY, AWARD-WINNING FASHION DESIGNER DAVID TLALE OPENED AN OFFICE AND SHOWROOM IN NY’S INFAMOUS GARMENT DISTRICT. THIS ALL THANKS TO A POWERFUL WOMAN WHO PUSHED HIM TO FOLLOW HIS DREAMS – HIS MOTHER JOYCE TLALE.

Growing up on the streets in Vosloo, a township east of Johannesburg, a young David, who watched films and read magazines about New York said to himself: “That’s where I want to live.” In 2024, he signed a lease for his first showroom and office. But this does not mean he is relocating. “My heart is still South African.”

After graduating in 2003, he made his first trip to New York. “A friend invited me over, and he took me on a city tour. All I remember is knowing this was where I wanted to be. I found the buzz incredibly mind-blowing.” In 2009 he did an entire fashion show in this city. “When I showcased my designs in that year, I knew this is where I needed to be. After applying for fashion weeks, I finally got accepted.”

It was David Tlale alongside Donna Karen, Calvin Klein, and Oscar de la Renta, to name but a few. “New York is different. It changed how I did business, how I did fashion. It’s very cutthroat. There is no take-two. Not like in South Africa.”

In 2017, he had a chance to move to NY, but his mother, Joyce, was against the idea. “She told me if I moved to New York, there would be no one to bury her.” So, David put his dream on hold. “Then two years later, on her deathbed, I brought up the topic again about moving, and she said I give you my blessing, son.” A few moments later, she passed away.

Joyce was his source of strength, his inspiration. She was a single mom and raised four children on her domestic worker salary. When she retired, she started a daycare service at home. Whenever David thinks about how lucky he is, he thanks Joyce. “My mother was the most amazing person. She was loving. Not a day went by without us having food.”

David remembers life lessons, too. “My mom used to say remember who God is. You need to know God for yourself. You need to have a personal relationship with him. Whenever I was going through a dip, through the business or personal life, I would call my mom and the first thing she would say is: ‘Let’s pray.’” And she would pray for her son on the phone.

“Those prayers, I miss them. I miss them so much,” he tells us. “Looking back, I think my mom had a fear of the unknown. America is so big and it can be dangerous and swallow us up. But I think I am ready.”

It has been two months since he signed the lease for his showroom, and the support has been great. “The idea is to solidify the DT brand here with suppliers and designers. Look, I am a pure, proud product of South Africa. I will always be South African at heart. My head office remains in SA.”

To the young fashion designers in SA, he says

they need to accept the valuable contribution we make to the textile industry in the world. “Ostrich feathers are made in Oudtshoorn and shipped to the world. Crocodile skin is made in SA and shipped to the world. Fashion is not just about fashion shows and making dresses. It’s about the business of creating products and selling them to buyers around the world. Showcasing your dresses should not be the goal. Producing, distributing and your outfits ending up in a store is what it’s about. It’s not just about me, it’s about the entire South African industry.”

He does miss South Africa’s food – meat and vegetables. “I miss how we party, and how we host functions. South Africa is one blessed country. I hope our new Government of National Unity can make it work.” IB

Taylor Swift was at No. 1 on the UK album chart with her eighth studio album, “Folklore”. It was a surprise album; after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, Swift cancelled the concert tour for her seventh studio album “Lover” (2019) and conceived “Folklore” during quarantine.

“Folklore” broke the record for the biggest opening day on Spotify for an album by a female act. The single “Exile” featuring Bon Iver, reached the top 10 on music charts in eight countries, and became Swift’s sixth No. 1 single on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The World Mourns The King Of Rock’n’Roll And The Queen Of Soul

On August 16, 1977, millions of fans around the world mourned as they learned of the death of Elvis Presley, who was just 42 when he died of heart failure. In the following days, thousands of fans would gather around his home, Graceland, to pay tribute to “The King of Rock’n’Roll,” while approximately 80,000 fans lined the streets of Memphis, TN to catch a view of the funeral procession. In a statement the following day, President Jimmy Carter, paid tribute to the artist, crediting him with “permanently chang[ing] the face of American popular culture.” ‘Elvis - the Great Performances’.

SPORTING Luxury.

A NEW LUXURY SUV APPEARS ON OUR ROADS ALMOST DAILY. BUT THE RANGE ROVER SPORT IS THE ORIGINAL LUXURY SUV WITH SPORTING TENDENCIES THAT TAKES THE ROUGH ROADS WITH EASE AND THE SMOOTH ROADS WITH VIGOUR. WE SPEND SOME TIME WITH THE RANGE ROVER SPORT ON THE TWISTY CAPE TOWN BACK ROADS.

week doesn’t go by without some vehicle manufacturer launching a sporting focussed SUV, with the usual words like ‘dynamic, ‘engaging’ and ‘exciting’ thrown around like confetti during a January South-Easter.

The Range Rover Sport practically invented this segment, so they do it properly, and this current model does it so well that it moves the notion of a sporty 4x4 to stratospheric levels.

From the silky smooth exterior, devoid of unnecessary creases and folds, to the clean, functional cockpit, the Range Rover Sport seems single mindedly focussed on doing one thing better than anyone else- to eat up asphalt and gravel with poise and purpose.

What I really like about the ‘Sport’, is that it has a

quiet confidence about it, as if it knows it owns this segment so it doesn’t have to shout too loud. The term ‘reductive design’ is how Land Rover designers describe the exterior that exudes simplicity and tautness, and is free from superfluous features that add nothing to the purpose of this vehicle.

The Range Rover Sport gives you the feeling of supreme on and off-road confidence, all the while bathing you in understated luxury.

Inside, the same principles abound. Functionality and design come together to create a harmonious space where everything you need is at your fingertips, but nothing detracts from the driving experience. And this is where the Range Rover Sport truly defines the segment.

From the moment you initially press the throttle, you are fully engaged in the experience. The power delivery is sharper, the suspension firmer and more connected, and it does this without drama. This is a vehicle that can be driven every day as it easily adjusts to the needs of the driver, whether you are pulling out of a Woolies parking, or hammering a dusty B-road.

The 2024 Range Rover Sport is available from Land Rover Constantiaberg starting from R2 141 700 for the P360 Mild Hybrid Dynamic SE.

EVOKING EMOTIONS USING ART

What inspires your choice of art?

I am inspired by people and the way we interact with each other – all the remnants of that. Emotions, conflict, intimacy, play. I have often made large-scale paper installation pieces (and textile installations earlier in my career) that I hope would evoke these reactions. The potential found in the lightweight and tactile nature of paper, combined with drawing, has been a language I’ve developed to create spaces for people to move through, and hopefully feel through. I love seeing people walk through a paper installation, a world created specifically to experience, take a moment and exist outside of the rest of the world.

Which emotion do you wish to evoke

IT IS VITAL FOR PEOPLE TO PHYSICALLY FEEL ART PIECES, SOMETHING THAT HAS OVER THE YEARS SOMEWHAT FADED. BUT ARTIST ODETTE GRASKIE MAKES SURE TO AWAKEN EMOTIONS, AND BYPASS DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY TO BRING PEOPLE BACK TO HANDMADE PIECES.

when creating your art pieces?

I think that any emotion is a great response –getting people to feel is so important. Some of my work has had such a range of reaction – from joy, laughter and crying at the emotionality in the work, to being utterly terrified of entering the work. I think because of the way my recent work has turned out, with many drawn eyes looking directly at the viewer, it has been a bit more confrontational in manner. So people have reacted to the work in a variety of ways. I love all of those reactions, I feel like getting people to react is the goal.

How do you see the role of paper and drawing evolving in the contemporary art world, especially with the rise of digital media?

It seems to me that the more complex things

get in the digital world, the more people long for tactility and handmade things. I think contemporary paper art as a genre is quite an exciting field to be in, with so many artists creating such intricate, experimental work –artists like Angela Glajcar, Mia Pearlman and Lebohang Kganye. I also think the art world is embracing paper art more – with contemporary paper art biennales, fairs and collectives like IAPMA, which is focused on paper art, springing up.

Tell us about a piece you’ve created that challenged you, and pushed your creative boundaries?

I recently made a paper sculpture entitled Through the Mirror (Really a Window) (exhibited at Investec Cape Town Art Fair with Berman Contemporary) that was based on the idea of a tunnel book. It really pushed my limits technically, as it had to be structurally sound and stand on its own without falling flat – like several experiments ended up doing eventually. The work was also conceptually challenging, a step in a new direction that I found exciting. I attempted to make a drawing that included the viewers as part of the drawing. The see-through, double-sided work is structured so that viewers can become a part of the composition, making it interactive without having to be touched.

Impressive! Do you think there is room for growth and evolution in the creative space in South Africa? Absolutely! The art world here is always a work in progress. We don’t have the centuries-old cultural institutions that other places have, and that makes us have to create our own spaces for development. That feels like a deficiency, on the one hand, but also an opportunity for those willing to take the chance. I think that the creative space in South Africa still has a lot of gaps, slowly being filled by younger gallerists, artists and curators.

If you weren’t an artist, which career would you have chosen?

I would definitely have been a librarian! Or perhaps a publisher. I am a part-time bookbinder and love to work with books in any shape or form.

Odette Graskie is represented by Berman Contemporary. IB

30 lashes for divorcing husband

EVEN THOUGH IRANIAN LAW ALLOWS FOR HUSBANDS TO HAVE MULTIPLE WIVES FOR A SPECIFIED PERIOD, A WOMAN WARNED HER HUSBAND NOT TO CHEAT ON HER. WHEN SHE CAUGHT HIM A THIRD TIME, SHE ASKED FOR A DIVORCE. HE AGREED BUT HER NIGHTMARE HAD ONLY JUST STARTED. THIS IS THE STORY OF SAHEL KHORASANI (35), A BEAUTY AND SKIN SPECIALIST FROM JOHANNESBURG.

Iwas born in Tehran, Iran. When I was 17, my parents, three siblings, and I moved to South Africa because of my father’s business ventures. I hated it here. I couldn’t speak English, only my native Farsi to my family. Two years later, I moved back to Iran to study psychology and continue my life there.

I met a guy and soon married. At first, my parents were happy because I would not be alone. But

soon, he became possessive and started drinking heavily. In our culture, drinking is forbidden. He was spending more time with his friends, and I was left to run our restaurants. Then, one morning, I woke up at 5am while he was sleeping and checked his phone, seeing messages between him and another woman. I was livid. This was the second time. I had had enough. I came to SA again to clear my head.

Later, returning to Tehran I decided to surprise my husband – a big mistake. He was shocked to see me. He grabbed something from the counter and ran out of the apartment. I thought it must be drugs. Walking through the flat, I saw women’s hair and hair ties. He was back at his cheating ways. He returned a few minutes later, and we spoke. He denied that he was on drugs or that he had another woman.

He refused to answer what was in the package, and we both agreed to see a psychologist. During our session, the psychologist pulled me to one side and said I must take all permissions from him. According to Iranian law, he had to give me permission if I wanted to travel, work, purchase anything and even divorce. If he refused, I could not divorce. However, women can be independent if their husbands give up their rights.

At first, he refused. But eventually, he agreed. By this stage, he admitted to having a girlfriend. He moved out. I went to see a lawyer without his knowledge. I demanded my gold, diamonds and a few thousand dollars amounting to R30 million I had in the apartment. He said he had given it to someone and would get it back. I gave him 24 hours to return it, but he didn’t. His girlfriend worked for a legal firm. I figured she must be giving him legal advice, but suddenly, he demanded that I sign a maher. In this contract, the husband agrees to pay his wife money. Our fights became more frequent.

He choked me, put his hand over my mouth and sexually assaulted me.

he came to the flat and broke the door down. I screamed. He choked me, put his hand over my mouth and sexually assaulted me. A short while later, the neighbours heard my screams and came to my rescue. I had a blue eye and a patch on my head where he had pulled my hair out. The neighbour called the police, and after taking my statement, they told me this was also his house. Someone called my dad because the next day, he arrived.

My husband and I appeared in court. He told the judge I drank too much alcohol. Remember, it is illegal there. My lawyer said I must stay quiet during the case, but I was never one to follow the rules. I said I do drink alcohol because my husband forces me. I was sentenced to receive 30 lashes. The judge called me to one side and said he could see I was a good person and that my husband was full of BS. He told me he feared something terrible was going to happen and that my husband might kill me. He advised me to leave the country. I flew to South Africa the next day, and was prescribed antidepressants for my mental state.

I was still angry. My husband had millions of my money and my gold. I missed Iran, I didn’t like South African culture. So, one night, I flushed the tablets down the toilet and booked a flight to Iran. My dad and I fought because he didn’t want me, to go as I was going to get a lashing, but I was adamant.

Back in Iran, I called my lawyer and went straight to the court to get this lashing over with, but when I arrived, the officer who was meant to beat me refused and let me go.

Now, I had the power. According to our maher, my husband owed me money he claimed he was unable to pay. I was not going to go down without a fight. I had him arrested and asked the police to go at night while he was sleeping. He spent three weeks in jail and eventually gave me some of the money owed, but not all of it. Until then, he is not allowed to leave Iran.

I came back to SA. I met a wonderful man. I live in Sandton, have obtained a Skin and Derma Aesthetics degree, and have opened my first beauty salon, Sahel Aesthetic.

Ten days later, he found out I wanted a divorce. All hell broke loose. One morning, at 2am,

To the women out there – don’t let anyone abuse you. Fight! My English is much better these days. The fight with my ex is still not over, but I hold the power now. IB

communities. Our primary objective is to support the brand awareness efforts of the Chinese global spirit brand, Kweichow Moutai.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

Managing the cultural differences of Chinese clients. Our mission is to navigate cultural differences between our clients and their stakeholders. We focus on Chinese-owned businesses and succeed because we cater to their unique expectations and demands. One challenge is explaining why certain methods work in China but not here.

What do you do when a colleague is not meeting their targets?

My vision is to create an ecosystem founded on trust, creativity, and awareness. In this media space, we are storytellers with a responsibility to honour our clients’ narratives and show them where they fit into the larger picture. IB

GLOWING SKIN FOR EVERY SEASON

NO MATTER HOW MUCH WE MIGHT LOVE ONE SEASON AND DREAD ANOTHER, OUR SKIN HAS ITS OWN REACTION TO THE TURN OF THE WEATHER. IF YOU HAVEN’T NOTICED IT BEFORE, START PAYING ATTENTION NOW, NOTICE HOW YOUR SKIN FEELS, OBSERVE HOW IT LOOKS, THEN GENTLY TAILOR YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE AND GIVE YOUR SKIN THE LOVE THAT IT NEEDS.

Winter

Winter’s icy fingers can have a distressing effect on your skin and in fact, many of us struggle with dry skin during the colder months. The drop in temperature and humidity, indoor heating, and harsh winds can all strip moisture from your skin. And if you didn’t know it before, be aware that maintaining your skin’s natural moisture barrier is essential for healthy skin.

Winter skincare tip: this is an excellent time to introduce a hydrating serum to your skincare routine. Ease up on exfoliating scrubs and steam treatments, and don’t even think about skipping out on sunscreen just because it’s not poolside weather.

Look for: products that are intensely moisturising if you’re struggling with dry skin. Choose something with nourishing oils and emollients that fill the spaces between skin cells. This helps correct dryness and creates a smoother surface.

Summer

Summer can have the opposite effect. The ever-rising humidity can mess with your skin’s pH levels, cause blocked pores, and make your skin oily. But summer can also dehydrate your skin. This is not the same as having a dry skin type. Anyone can have dehydrated skin from time to time, because while dry skin is about a lack of oil, dehydrated skin is caused by a lack of water. Dehydrated skin looks dull and lifeless, while well-hydrated skin looks plump and vibrant.

Summer skincare tip: sweep away the sweat, oil, and other impurities with a gentle foaming or gel cleanser, launch those hydrating rituals at night, and soothe your skin post-fun-in-the-sun. And we don’t think we need to say this, but still: sunscreen, always, and in liberal amounts.

Look for: products that have antioxidants like Vitamin E. They’re like superheroes that help protect your skin against environmental damage. And keep it lightweight – from cleansers to moisturisers, you don’t want anything to clog your pores.

GREG TINKLER

Duration in this position: 8 months

Staff: 4

Turnover last year: R5m per month

How did you get this job?

I have always been an entrepreneur, working for myself. I started by opening a brand activation agency which focused on the sports, health and wellness industry. We did event activation and promotions for sports nutrition, pharmaceutical and sports apparel brands. From there, I joined NUTRITECH, which is a leading sports nutrition brand in South Africa. I went on to build that into a R200 mil a year brand and launched various other brands within the health and wellness space, namely Vitatech (Vitamins), Slender You (Slimming) and Endurade (Hydration Drinks). From there I went on to launch my own brand Gloot.

What is your work experience?

I have been working in the supplement industry for the past 12 years, launching various brands which went on to become category leaders. I have also consulted for many top brands, most recently PURA Beverage Co. where I helped launch their new PURA Hydration Drink.

Are you a manager or a leader?

A manager focuses on processes, systems and dayto-day operations. Leaders inspire, motivate and guide people towards a vision. I like to think I have a good mix of both.

What does your company do?

Gloot is a health, wellness and beauty brand dedicated solely to women. We make innovative health and wellness products that women can use in their everyday routine to lead a healthier lifestyle.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

As a startup brand, we need to navigate the

challenges of cash flow, dealing with retail accounts that often pay you from 60-90 days can be challenging. We are also a small team, so we often have to get stuck in and multitask and become a jack of all trades, but we do enjoy this.

Does your laptop go with you on holiday?

Yes… unfortunately, money doesn’t sleep. We are a new startup business and many of the relationships still sit with me personally.

What has been your biggest crisis as CEO and how did you navigate the company through this storm?

As a CEO, every day presents its own set of challenges and fires to put out. While we haven’t faced any massive crises so far, we have had our share of situations that required quick thinking and decisive action. For instance, there was a time we had an unexpected surge in orders, which initially overwhelmed our fulfilment process and shot our forecasting right out of the window.

What is your vision as CEO for the people working in your company?

I want to create an environment where every team member feels valued, inspired and empowered to reach their full potential. Everyone has their own big dreams and goals, and I want their dreams and goals to fit inside and be able to be achieved while working towards the company’s end goal. IB

Heritage fashion DOS & DON’TS

Do

1. Invest in clothing pieces made from natural fibres like cotton, silk and linen. They feel better and last longer.

2. Purchase heritage clothing from local designers and crafters.

3. Research more about other cultures and customs to broaden your knowledge and appreciation.

4. Have a great time adding heritage elements to your daily wardrobe.

Don’t

Be afraid of colour, experiment with exploring colours even if it’s just accessories.

September is Heritage month in South Africa, and we thought of making the August issue the gateway to some ideas on how to rock up at events and family gatherings with styled traditional looks. Culture combined with fashion. It doesn’t have to be boring at all.

Seize the heritage moment and add a little bit of African glam to your heritage look with a beautiful hat. Go for a design that is not ordinary, which also showcases your type of style. Use a few accessories to make your outfit pop such as jewellery, earrings, bangles, rings etc.

Bonolo Shweshwe Tassles Dress – R 4 450

A nice-fitting cardigan for a gentleman that’s suitable for celebrating his culture shouldn’t be so difficult to find. But we get it, most people want their heritage outfits to tell a story, have art that speaks to the core of where someone comes from. Thebe Magugu’s creative mind on the other page touches that.

Catch flights, allergies!not

It’s officially allergy season, and for those who suffer from seasonal allergies, this can be a very challenging time of the year, especially when travelling. The good news is that with the proper techniques and treatments, most allergies can be managed. Clicks offers a wide range of on-the-go allergy relief for you and your family, so switch to Clicks for all your allergy solutions this season!

What are allergies?

Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, pet dander, or certain foods. These reactions can range from mild sneezing and itching to severe or sometimes life-threatening responses.

Common triggers during travel

Exposure to new environments can introduce unfamiliar allergens. Common travel-related allergens include dust mites in hotel rooms, pollen from different regions, and pet dander in public transport. Airborne allergens such as pollen often result in hay fever which is characterised by sneezing, itchy and puffy eyes, a runny nose, and a scratchy throat. Asthmatic symptoms can also occur due to narrowed airways and this may include wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.

Preparing for allergy season before you travel

To ensure that you and your family stay protected while travelling, stock up on allergy medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays. Consider products like Clicks Saline Spray, which soothes and moisturises dry, irritated nasal passages for everyday nasal hygiene, or the Clicks Air Revitaliser, which helps to eliminate harmful airborne contaminants such as pollen, dust, and odours. For temporary relief from itching, burning and watering eyes, opt for Similasan's Allergy Eye Relief Eye Drops which is made with all-natural homeopathic ingredients. Packing a travel-sized air purifier can also be a game changer for those with severe allergies.

Did you know?

Drinking plenty of water and maintaining a healthy diet can help manage allergy symptoms.

Clicks also offers a range of vitamins and supplements to support your immune system, ensuring you stay healthy and ready to live your best life.

Winter mindfulness BREATHWORK, MEDITATIVE MOVEMENT AND STRESS RELEASE PRACTICES

ARE YOU HITTING A WINTER SLUMP? THINGS ARE COLD AND GLOOMY OUTSIDE; EVERYONE IS COVERING UP MORE, AND MOST SOCIAL OCCASIONS ARE INDOORS AND INCLUDE DELICIOUS, HEARTY FOODS. NONE OF THIS IS TERRIBLE; MANY WINTER HABITS AND RITUALS BENEFIT OUR MENTAL HEALTH AND RECOVERY. HOWEVER, OVERINDULGING, PACKING ON A FEW KILOS AND POTENTIALLY LETTING GO OF SOME OF OUR HEALTHIER HABITS CAN MOST CERTAINLY HAVE ADVERSE LONG-TERM EFFECTS.

As a health professional (Personal Trainer & Nutritionist) with over ten years working with all sorts of people, I find winter mindfulness practices to be some of the most challenging to implement consistently. Often, my clients hit a mid-year slump, feeling exhausted and letting go of some super critical daily practices that enhance their mental and physical health, happiness, and lifestyle. Remember, anything health-related is a marathon, not a sprint. You should expect delayed gratification if you’re doing this healthy lifestyle correctly. The results you seek can only be seen and felt after some consistent time.

Here are a few of my favourite recommendations for efficiently implementing mindful practices into your everyday life. These are all also “Winter Friendly;” any time and any place is what makes these so easy to implement. Remember, this is a lifestyle implementation which will get easier over time. Consistency is the key to creating habits.

Breathwork

In a fast-paced world where we can often become overwhelmed, exhausted and exposed to an

overload of information, mental health needs to be a daily priority – taking time out to shift our focus off-screens and interactions and being intentional about taking a moment for ourselves. Breathwork is a simple and effective way of doing this anywhere and at any time. This is a fantastic practice to manage stress, anxiety, depression, and general mental health. Taking a few mindful moments daily will enhance your health in multiple ways. Slow, deep breathing (inhaling through the nose and exhaling out the mouth) has a calming and soothing effect on the nervous system.

Meditative movement

Daily movement or exercise can often feel overwhelming, difficult to commit to and challenging to stick with consistently. When to find the time, the accountability of showing up, body aches from working hard, the list goes on. I often find that people try to do too much too soon and cannot keep it up. Realistically, when starting with mindful and meditative movement, you want to start slowly with lowintensity and low-impact movement or exercise. This can be a meditation class, yoga, stretching, beginner pilates etc. These practices can also be

There is no excuse for not making time for andyourself living a healthier and happier life.

done in the comfort of your home through online coaching sessions or audio and visual recordings. There is no excuse for not making time for yourself and living a healthier and happier life. These little things are fulfilling.

Stress relief practices

Taking 10-15 minutes each day to de-stress is an absolute must. Making this a priority will change the game for you and those in contact with you. Keep this commitment to yourself by making it fun, manageable, and easy to implement. These can include listening to a podcast, reading, self-care like bubble baths and face masks, winding down with candlelight and your favourite music, cooking with a loved one, enjoying a cup of tea without distractions, getting into bed earlier, journaling, etc. These are all fantastic ways to de-stress and take a moment to reflect.

Trying one of these practices daily will impact your overall health beautifully. My best advice is one daily practice, one day at a time. You can carve this time out for yourself, and when you start to feel the positive benefits, your life will be enhanced in incredible ways. IB

gym at work? TOO SHY TO

Here

are 6

reasons why you should exercise at the office

MORE AND MORE COMPANIES ARE ADDING A GYM TO THE WORKPLACE TO PROMOTE HEALTH AND THE WELL-BEING OF EMPLOYEES. A RECENT REPORT BY THE NHS SUGGESTS EXERCISING CAN REDUCE YOUR RISK OF MAJOR ILLNESSES SUCH AS A STROKE, DIABETES, CANCER, AND CORONARY HEART DISEASE. BUT LET’S GET INTO IT, WRITES FITNESS TRAINER SIYA MASHELE.

Physical health

Regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. This is perfect for those who work long hours. It also helps with posture by strengthening back muscles.

Mental health

Even if exercising is on a bike at the office, this can have a positive effect on mental health. Goodbye anxiety and depression.

Reduced stress

We have all heard it, “ Don’t stress too much”. Easier said than done, doc. But regular stretching or plain walking on the treadmill at the office helps to reduce stress levels, especially if you’re in a demanding job.

Increased productivity

Sometimes we sit at the desk with no energy to finish a report or prepare for a big meeting. Go for a jog on the treadmill at the office and you will be more productive, acing that presentation.

Better sleep

We have all, at times, arrived at the office sleep-

deprived. Exercising can, according to the experts and me, improve your quality of sleep, allowing you turn up for work feeling fresher.

Morale boost

Regular exercise has been shown to improve the morale of employees and promote a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.

So, what are you waiting for? Bring the gym clothes tomorrow and start exercising at the office. You will thank yourself later. IB

Rooibos

IS TOP DRINKS CHOICE AMONG SA MEN

A RECENT SURVEY UNVEILS FASCINATING INSIGHTS INTO THE BEVERAGE PREFERENCES OF SOUTH AFRICAN MEN. CONDUCTED AMONG MORE THAN 700 RESPONDENTS, THE SURVEY CAPTURES THE NUANCES OF BEVERAGE CHOICES AMONG MEN IN DIFFERENT SETTINGS, PROFESSIONS AND AGE GROUPS, PROVIDING VALUABLE DATA FOR UNDERSTANDING MEN’S BEVERAGE PREFERENCES, DRINKING HABITS AND VIEWS ON HEALTHIER LIFESTYLES.

The survey found that 46% of men start their day with a cup of coffee, while 30% opt for rooibos as their preferred sunrise sip. Water was the third most popular daybreak drink at 9%, followed by black tea (4%) and other herbal infusions like chamomile, chai, ginger and hibiscus at 2%.

Dr Gerald Maarman, a biomedical scientist and leading rooibos researcher says it’s encouraging to see such a significant number of men choosing rooibos to kickstart their day. “Its natural sweet taste, rich antioxidant profile and caffeine-free nature make it an excellent morning beverage.”

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, finding effective ways to manage stress is crucial. Many South African men turn to specific beverages to help them relax and cope with their hectic schedules. Sixty-nine % of men rely on Adam’s ale (water) to combat stress, while 16% turn to coffee and 11% to Rooibos. For unwinding after a long day, rooibos tops the list at 32%, followed by beer at 19% and

coffee at 12%. Spirits and wine were also popular choices, at 11% and 10% respectively.

Men reported drinking rooibos not only to relax but also to support physical activity, illustrating the versatile nature of the tisane. During workouts, hydration is crucial. The survey revealed that 67% of men prioritise water during exercise. Rooibos was the second most favoured workout drink, followed by other herbal tisanes. Sports drinks and electrolyte-enhanced water were also cited as popular fourth and fifth options.

In social settings, rooibos and beer are tied as the preferred drinks at 47%, with black tea, coolers and ciders following closely behind. Among men, the predominant consideration in selecting a beverage was “taste”, with “occasion and setting” (47%) and “health considerations” (39%) also proving significant.

Rooibos is a strong contender in the hot beverage category, with 45% of males preferring coffee and 42% opting for rooibos. Black tea and hot chocolate followed at 5% respectively. More than 42% of men drink at least one cup of rooibos daily, 22% consume two to three servings a week and 17% drink it every other week.

Health and well-being play a pivotal role for more than 60% of men, who recognise the benefits of drinking tea or tisanes. “Rooibos’ unique combination of antioxidants helps fight inflammation and can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other metabolic conditions,” notes Maarman.

The survey, which was commissioned by the SARC also delved into how stereotypes impact tea-drinking behaviours.

Almost half (47%) of those surveyed highlighted evolving views on tea/tisanes as a drink accepted by people of all genders and ages, expressing their enjoyment of rooibos regardless of the situation or company. A small percentage (5%) felt that tea was predominantly associated with

women rather than men, which explains why, in certain social settings, they prefer alternatives like coffee or beer.

Cultural and familial connections are strong among rooibos drinkers, with 55% indicating these ties as likely reasons for their preference. Another 29% enjoy rooibos for its taste and health benefits, without necessarily growing up with it or having any special connections to it. The survey highlighted that 55% of men enjoy rooibos in both social and solitary settings, while 31% prefer to consume it alone or with close companions.

Generational differences also emerged, with the Silent Generation (aged 79-96) being the most frequent rooibos drinkers at 67%. Millennials (aged 28-43), ranked second in terms of rooibos consumption at 48%, followed by Baby Boomers (aged 60-78) at 44%. Gen X (aged 44-59) ranked fourth with 35%, while Gen Z (aged 18-27) came in fifth position at 30%.

In terms of professions, men in the construction and engineering industries prefer rooibos over other hot beverages, with those in IT and telecoms, hospitality, entrepreneurship, and skilled trades (such as electricians and plumbers) following suit.

Maarman says rooibos offers a myriad of health benefits, particularly for men. “Its antioxidants help combat oxidative stress and inflammation, crucial for those with active lifestyles. Rooibos also supports heart health by improving blood pressure and cholesterol levels, aiding in muscle recovery, reducing muscle spasms and enhancing sleep quality. Additionally, it improves sperm concentration and function, immune function, weight management and skin health.”

The Men’s Drinking Habits Survey highlights rooibos as a versatile and healthy beverage choice for men across South Africa, cementing its role in their daily routines, whilst promoting overall well-being. IB

By incorporating these engaging and educational activities into their routine, families can ensure that the winter season is a time of joy, learning, and togetherness. IB

The rise

of SA AS A DESTINATION FOR ADVENTURE TOURISM

ADVENTURE TOURISM IS A SIGNIFICANT TOURISM DRAWCARD IN A TRAVELLER’S ITINERARY.

SOUTH AFRICA FARES WELL ON THE WORLD STAGE, WITH LEADERSHIP ON ADVENTURE OFFERINGS AMONG THE TOP COMPETING DESTINATIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE.

South Africa’s tourism attractiveness and appeal have adventure and wildlife as key differentiators. As measured in SA Tourism’s Brand Tracker, it seeks to lead in these offerings.

Adventure and wildlife are vital differentiators regarding South Africa’s attractiveness and appeal as a tourism destination. Based on South African Tourism’s Brand Tracker, these take the lead. Brand Tracker Survey is an international brand assessment determining the appeal and demand creation within South African Tourism’s markets.

The 2023 (January to December) report results show that South Africa is among the leading adventure destinations for travellers across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa: Brazil, Japan, the UK, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The United World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) defines adventure tourism as: “A type of tourism

which usually takes place in destinations with specific geographic features and landscape and tends to be associated with physical activity, cultural exchange, interaction and engagement with nature. This experience may involve some kind of real or perceived risk and may require significant physical and/or mental effort. Adventure tourism generally includes outdoor activities such as mountaineering, trekking, bungee jumping, rock climbing, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, canyoning, mountain biking, bushwalking, and scuba diving. Likewise, some indoor adventure tourism activities may also be practised.” 1

How lucrative is adventure tourism?

Adventure tourists make up 8.8% of tourists to South Africa, which is 722,900 of the 8.2 million arrivals in 2023. Adventure tourists to South Africa stay five nights longer and spend almost three times more than the average tourist to South Africa. During this period, they stayed 19 nights on average, well over the 14 nights by all tourists.

They spent R30 000 on average compared to the R11 800 paid by the average overall tourist.

Note: Adventure tourists are all international tourists who engage in adventure activities, according to the SA Tourism Departure Survey. All the tourists who did not engage in adventure activities are then compared to the adventure tourists for the analysis below.

Adventure tourists spending in paid accommodation is also lucrative; they spend 14 nights (compared to 6 nights the average tourist spends) in paid accommodation. Adventure tourists to South Africa have a share of 23% of paid nights.

Where are the adventure tourists from?

Europe provides the highest number of tourists travelling to South Africa for adventure travel (468,800 of the 722,900 overall). Norway, Switzerland, France, Sweden, and Germany are among the markets with the highest proportion of adventure travellers, and 14 of the top 15 adventure markets by incidence were in Europe. Overall, in 2023, almost two-thirds (65%) of adventure tourists in South Africa were from Europe, up from 60% pre-pandemic in 2019. Canada was the only non-European market in the top 15. North America supplied the secondhighest number of adventure tourists (just over 107,000 arrivals and a share of 15%), followed by Africa with 77,400 tourists and 11%. Asia, Australasia, the Middle East, and South America contribute just 10% of all adventure tourists. (Source: SA Tourism Departure Survey 2023.)

Despite the incidence or proportion of adventure tourists being dominated by Europe, the USA, Lesotho, Canada, and Australia have the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 10th highest number of adventure tourists by sheer number of tourists. The US was behind the UK and Germany and ahead of the Netherlands and France, which round out the top 5.

The proportion speaks to the share of adventure tourists per country, while the volume speaks to the actual numbers. The total number of arrivals from that country heavily influences the volume overall.

Note: As an example, Zimbabwe sent over 2.1 million tourists to South Africa, but a lower proportion of that number would be adventure tourists (13,700 tourists, representing an incidence or proportion of 0.06%), a low incidence but a high number compared to Belgium, which sent about 46 350 tourists in 2023, of which 16,620 were adventure tourists, an incidence or proportion of over a third (36%).

Is adventure tourism growing?

Europe and Africa are key drivers of growth and recovery to 2019 levels, with a 101% and 90% recovery in adventure tourist volumes, respectively. The markets leading the recovery were Eswatini (+332%), Russia (+246%), Namibia (+220%), UAE (+215%), and DRC (+208%). There are six other fully recovered markets: New Zealand, Uganda, Finland, Lesotho, Turkey, and Switzerland.

Adventure tourists are mostly first-timers, which is true both pre-pandemic and 2023 (59% compared to 67% in 2019). In 2023, the profile of adventure tourists was dominated by leisure tourists. More than two-thirds of all adventure travel was for holiday purposes, and 18% were VFR (Visiting friends and relatives) tourists. Postpandemic, there has been a massive increase in adventure tourists over 35 years, from over

a third (37%) in 2019 up to 41% in 2021, 49% in 2022, and 57% in 2023. The youth adventure market has consistently got smaller, and there is an opportunity to target them with fresh experiences that augment technology and exploration within the destination.

Where in South Africa is adventure dominant?

From January to December 2023, Western Cape was the adventure capital of South Africa with 85% of all the adventure tourists, an estimated 614 500 tourists, representing a recovery of 82% of the numbers seen in 2019. The province collected 62% of the overall spending by adventure tourists. This is driven by the adventure tourists spending R22 200 on average, leading to a total of R13.5 billion.

Northern Cape leads on average spending with R26 700 in 2023 (although the volume was low), more than three times the average spend pre-pandemic in 2019. Western Cape also saw the highest number of bed nights among the provinces, with a recovery in bed nights in the market of 72%. (Definition: Bed nights: a measure of the number of beds occupied.)

The top attractions in the country overall for adventure tourists were V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay, Cape Point, Table Mountain, Clifton Beach, and Cango Caves. This speaks to the high proportion of adventure tourists visiting Western Cape. The top 13 attractions were within the Western Cape. Tourists mostly see the same attractions; however, except for malls, museums, and casinos, adventure tourists are more inclined to visit these outdoor attractions. Outside the Western Cape, Kruger National Park, Blyde River

Canyon -“God’s Window”, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Addo Elephant Park, and Storm’s River are the top 5 attractions. Hazyview, Bloukrans Bridge –Tsitsikamma Tree Top Canopy, and Tour of Soweto also feature

Conclusion

South Africa is well placed to lead in adventure tourism, and adventure tourists spend more and stay longer than other tourists. While a lot of work has gone into profiling South Africa’s adventure offerings, there is an opportunity for the sector to elevate its marketing efforts to realise the total returns from this category of travellers. We can draw more eyeballs and numbers to the destination by making it prominent in the marketing materials.

The destination has 3,000km of beach/shoreline2 with the potential for offering various tourist experiences, including surfing, zip-lining, bungee jumping, kayaking and diving and much more. South Africa also has 14,561 named mountain peaks3, which enable the development of hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking trails. All these natural endowments enable business and job creation opportunities that will attract more of the world to our destination and empower the citizens seeking to welcome them. Adventure tourism is the new gold; tourists across the globe are seeking experiences over products and prioritising their spending on unique and exciting activities. This trend has been increasing and will continue to allow the country to drive growth following a full recovery from the pandemic. IB

Paternoster

WE KNOW IT’S COLD BUT YOU CAN STILL GET THE PERFECT WEEKEND AWAY AT ONE OF THE WEST COAST’S UNDERRATED GEMS – PATERNOSTER. IT’S A SLEEPY TOWN BUT THE SUNSETS ARE BREATHTAKING.

Just two hours from Cape Town, Paternoster is the ultimate getaway for city dwellers. The little fishing town is made up of whitewashed cottages overlooking a sweep of white sand.

The quaintest fishermen’s cottages are right next to the beach. Known as one of the oldest

fishing villages on the West Coast in the Province, you can buy fish and crayfish directly from the fishermen off their boats. Outside almost every house you will find a fishing boat. The Columbine Nature Reserve a few kilometres away also has 200 beautiful bird species.

The beautiful sunrise will get you out of bed at the

crack of dawn, and you will find fishermen on the beach as early as 5am every morning going out to sea in the hope of catching fish. While I was there watching, one of the first fishing boats got stuck in the sand and it took almost to two hours to dislodge it. The life of a fisherman is very hard and there are no guarantees that they will find any fish or crayfish.

Interesting Facts! ABOUT PATERNOSTER

Paternoster, meaning

Our Father in Latin and founded in 1863, is one of the oldest fishing villages in South Africa. Limestone, which is abundant in the area, was used to build all structures and buildings in the village. This has created the distinctive “Paternoster” architecture style of whitewashed houses that you see throughout town.

As one fisherman noted: “It is also a huge risk for us to go out to sea every day because we do not have a navigation system on the boat, but we sometimes use the GPS on our phones. Many men have lost their lives at sea,” he said. With snoek especially decreasing and becoming more elusive, the fishermen are taking less money home. “We only catch fish so that we can put food on the table and if we don’t catch anything, then our families will have to go hungry. But we still love the sea,” he said.

Walking through this quiet town so early in the morning, I pass children with their parents on their way to school. The Paternoster Primary school is located in the centre of the town, on a hill which has the most beautiful view of the coastline. The children seem happy to go to school, and nobody is late. Paternoster is also known for its beautiful craft shops and an art gallery, which sells the work of local artists from previously disadvantaged communities.

Dianne Heesom-Green, the owner of the Stone Fish Gallery, said that was also important to include the work of local artists. “They are very talented and by exhibiting their work here, they earn an income, because unemployment is high in Paternoster,” she said. IB

NOMONDE NDLANGISA, CEO OF BERGRIVIER TOURISM OFFERS A GUIDE TO SOME OF THE TOP ATTRACTIONS IN BERGRIVIER THAT PROMISE FUN AND ADVENTURE FOR BOTH KIDS AND PARENTS:

1. The Fisheries Museum in Laaiplek

A visit to the Fisheries Museum in Laaiplek is a journey through the rich maritime history of the West Coast. This charming museum showcases the evolution of fishing in the area, featuring fascinating exhibits like vintage fishing gear, boat models, and stories of local fishermen. It’s an educational and entertaining stop for families, offering a glimpse into the life of the coastal community. Plus, kids can finally learn where their fish fingers come from (hint: not the freezer aisle).

Tip: Combine your museum visit with a stroll along the Laaiplek harbour to watch the fishing boats come and go. Kids can wave at the fishermen like they’re local celebrities.

2. The Historic Walking Route in Piketberg

Piketberg is a town steeped in history, and its historic walking route is a perfect way for families to explore its heritage. The route takes you past beautifully preserved buildings, including old churches, homes, and public buildings, each with its own story. It’s a leisurely activity that combines exercise with education, making it enjoyable for both kids and parents. Imagine the excitement when your little ones realise they’re walking through history – like a real-life treasure hunt, minus the pirates.

Tip: Pick up a map from the local tourism office to ensure you don’t miss any of the highlights. And remember, the promise of ice cream at the end

can be a great motivator.

3. The Piket-bo-berg Market

The Piket-bo-berg Market is a delightful spot for families to experience local culture. Held on the last Saturday of every month, this market offers a variety of wonderful handmade crafts, fresh produce, delicious food stalls, and live entertainment. It’s a vibrant place where kids can enjoy the open space and activities, while parents can browse and shop for unique items. It’s like a treasure trove where the only “X” marks the spot is your kids’ new favourite snack stall.

Tip: Arrive early to avoid the crowds and get the best selection of goods. Early birds might not get worms, but they do get the best pastries.

4. The 22 Waterfalls in Porterville

Porterville is home to the stunning 22 Waterfalls, a natural attraction that’s perfect for a day of family adventure. The waterfalls are nestled in a beautiful setting, with hiking trails that vary in difficulty, making them accessible to families with children of all ages. The sight of cascading water and the opportunity to swim in natural pools is a highlight of any trip. Prepare for a day

of “Wow!” moments and “Can we come back tomorrow?” requests.

Tip: Pack a picnic and plenty of water, and wear comfortable hiking shoes. And maybe a towel – for when the kids “accidentally” fall into the water.

5. Piekenierkloof Mountain Lodge

For a blend of adventure and relaxation, Piekenierkloof Mountain Lodge is an ideal family destination. The lodge offers various activities, including zip-lining, putt-putt, hiking, and more. For those seeking a more laid-back experience, the lodge’s spa and pool provide a perfect retreat. It’s a great base for exploring the surrounding area while enjoying comfortable accommodation. Think of it as the perfect combo: adventure for the kids, and relaxation for the parents.

Tip: Check the lodge’s activity schedule in advance to plan your stay around the most exciting events. And don’t forget to bring a book for those precious moments of peace by the pool.

6. A Boat Cruise Up the River in Velddrif

Exploring the Berg River on a boat cruise is a serene and scenic experience. Families can enjoy

the tranquil waters, observe a huge variety of bird species, and learn about the local ecosystem. It’s a relaxing way to spend a day, with the chance to see the region’s natural beauty from a unique perspective. Plus, there’s something undeniably magical about being on a boat – cue endless “I’m the captain!” declarations.

Tip: Bring binoculars for bird watching and a camera to capture the stunning views. And maybe a pirate hat – just in case.

7. Exploring Bokkom Laan

Bokkom Laan in Velddrif is a historic area known for its traditional bokkom (dried fish) processing. Families can wander along the lane, watching the process of fish drying, visiting quaint shops, and tasting local delicacies. It’s a unique cultural experience that gives insight into the traditional ways of the West Coast. It’s also a great opportunity to challenge your kids to try something new.

Tip: Try some bokkoms and other local seafood specialities at one of the small eateries along the lane. And don’t forget to pack breath mints!

8. The West Coast Fossil Park near Langebaan

Just a short drive from Bergrivier, the West Coast Fossil Park offers an exciting trip back in time. The park features a wealth of fossils from millions of years ago, including those of ancient animals. Guided tours provide fascinating insights into the prehistoric era, making it an educational and fun outing for children and adults alike. It’s like stepping into a time machine, but without the need for a flux capacitor.

Tip: Participate in the guided tour for a more in-depth understanding of the fossils and their significance. Encourage the kids to ask questions – they will surprise you with their dinosaur knowledge.

9. Bird Watching in and Around Velddrif

Velddrif is a haven for bird watchers, with its wetlands attracting a diverse range of bird species. Families can spend a peaceful day observing flamingos, pelicans, and many other birds in their natural habitat. The area offers several bird hides and observation points, making it easy to spot and enjoy the local avian life. It’s a great way to teach kids about nature – and to practise your best “bird whisperer” voice.

Tip: Early morning or late afternoon is the best time for bird watching, as birds are most active during these times. And remember, patience is key – and snacks help too. IB

Botswana’s Atzaró Okavango A CHEETAH

AND WARTHOGS STAND OFF

IT’S EARLY IN THE MORNING. WE’RE NOT EVEN TEN MINUTES FROM CAMP AS WE SIT SILENTLY IN THE BACK OF THE GAME DRIVE VEHICLE. FIVE CHEETAHS LIE CAMOUFLAGED IN THE GRASS BEFORE US. WE SAW THESE SAME CHEETAHS YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, RESTING IN A PATCH OF SHADE. THIS TIME, THOUGH, THEY’RE ON THE PROWL. EVERYONE IN THE VEHICLE KNOWS WE MUST STAY QUIET, WRITES SARAH KINGDOM.

Apair of unsuspecting warthogs and their baby appear. The cheetahs’ heads turn in unison, checking out the new arrivals – sudden pandemonium. One cheetah heads towards the warthogs, eyeing up the piglet for a snack. The other four get to their feet and stand watching before spreading out to corner the family. Breaking into a run, the first cheetah closes in on the baby. We collectively hold our breath.

Let me bring you into the full picture. We find ourselves in the heart of southern Africa, the Kalahari Desert, home to the world’s most extensive wetlands. The broad Okavango River annually discharges 11 cubic kilometres of water onto the dry sands of the Kalahari, creating a maze of waterways, lagoons, shallow channels, reed islands and grassy floodplains. Spreading over more than 16,000 km², with annual floodwaters seasonally flooding large parts, the Okavango Delta is a remarkable environment

that constantly adapts and changes. Officially declared UNESCO’s 1,000th World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, the Delta is one of the most biodiverse wetlands in the world and undeniably Botswana’s emerald crown jewel.

Back to the game drive: unbelievably, the warthog parents stand their ground in the face of the charging cheetah. Just as the death of their baby seems imminent, the parents race towards the approaching cat, who skids to a halt in a cloud of dust, turns tail and streaks off in the opposite direction, pursued by the pair of irate, snorting warthogs. The parents return victorious to gather their baby while the somewhat embarrassed cheetah slinks quietly in the background, surreptitiously reuniting with his brothers.

The Okavango Delta is home to vast concentrations of wildlife, with over 1,000 species of plants, more than 480 species of birds, 130 species of mammals, and numerous species of reptiles and fish. Some game-viewing highlights include elephants, lions, cheetahs,

leopards, buffalos, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and numerous antelope species.

The brand new Atzaró Okavango Camp lies in the heart of the game-rich southern reaches of the Okavango Delta, a short helicopter ride from Maun, and is best described as a place where eco-consciousness and indulgence meet. Built along eco-friendly principles but without losing focus on exclusivity and style, Atzaró Okavango offers a sustainable safari in Botswana without compromising on luxury.

Aside from such excitement-filled game drives, guests at Atzaró can do walking safaris (with an armed guide) or go birdwatching. Seasonal water levels permitting, there are boat trips and sunset cruises, catch-and-release fishing and the opportunity to enjoy the gentle pace of mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions. All these activities are offered privately, so you can maintain your solitude and not have to share your personal space with strangers.

Atzaró Okavango is a stylish camp. Overlooking

a seasonal lagoon, there are eight palatial, tented rooms connected by raised wooden walkways that lead off the central area. All have air conditioning, fans, and voluminous, romantic mosquito nets draped around the beds. Outside on a private deck, there’s a small shaded area with a plunge pool - vital to cooling off from the heat of the day. Bathrooms have indoor and outdoor showers and baths - where one bathtub is lovely, two is pure decadence, and if you’re lucky, you might even be able to do some game viewing from your outdoor tub!

The luxury doesn’t stop with the bedrooms. The main thatched lodge area has vaulted ceilings and a large open lounge, with antiques, leather Chesterfield sofas and traditional kuba (mud)

cloths embellished with embroidery, applique and patchwork. The bar is detailed with woods, velvets, and cut glass, and there’s a sunken seating area around an outdoor firepit with views overlooking the seasonal lagoon. Take high tea at the observation deck, sip pre-dinner drinks at the bar or on one of the comfortable chairs on the deck, and after dinner, settle in by the firepit and watch the stars overhead while you listen to the grunts of hippos or the sound of elephants coming to drink. For those looking for something extra, there’s a wine cellar, complete with sommelier. For meals, an artfully thatched, traditional boma, reminiscent of a bird’s nest, adds a rustic alternative to dinner in the primary dining area. The main lodge also serves as a ‘living museum’ filled with intricate and traditional artworks collected from all over the continentshould something special catch your eye, similar, exclusively commissioned pieces are available to purchase in the gift shop. Amongst all this glamour, though, it’s worth noting that, true to its sustainability principles, Atzaró Okavango has been built using recycled materials and is fully powered by solar.

This most luxurious Botswanan safari lodge will captivate you with its lavish design, beautiful views, and fantastic wildlife experiences. Everywhere you go in this stylish camp, be it sipping sundowners at the bar overlooking the lagoon or relaxing in a bubble bath on your verandah, there’s a sense of relaxed luxury here and an elegant fusion of contemporary design and traditional African charm – it’s easy to feel at home at Atzaro Okavango. Germany STILL

FAMILIARISING MYSELF WITH THE CULTURE

How long have you lived here?

6 years

Why did you move to Germany?

I got married here and moved to Germany. Moving to Germany for love was both a leap of faith and a journey of the heart. The decision to cross oceans and borders for love was not made lightly, but with a deep sense of conviction and an unwavering belief in the power of connection. As I navigated the cobblestone streets and embraced the unfamiliar language and culture, I felt a wave of love in every new experience, grounding me in a profound sense of purpose and belonging. In a new land with my partner, I found solace in the shared moments of joy, the promise of a future together, and the unspoken understanding that love knows no bounds. Germany, with its rich history and vibrant spirit, became not just a place on the map, but a part of my story—a testament to the transformative power of love that transcends distance, time, and space.

What were your first impressions of the country?

Relocating from South Africa to Germany was like stepping into a new world, both familiar and foreign at the same time. The contrast between the vibrant rhythms of South Africa and the structured order of Germany was striking, yet I found the meticulous attention to detail that permeates every aspect of German life reassuring. As I familiarised myself with the landscapes, the food and the people, I felt a sense of belonging in this new land – a sense of immersion in a culture rich with history, tradition, and innovation. Germany opened its arms to me, offering a new perspective, a fresh start, and a wealth of opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive in this enchanting corner of the world.

How did you find the food?

The food is not what I am used to. I am still adjusting even after 6 years. One can never get over South African food.

Were the people friendly?

It is very difficult to tell if people are friendly if you cannot speak their language for the first two years. I had to learn the language from the very beginning.

What do you do for fun?

To be honest, I usually travel to Luxembourg to

Ulmer Munster Cathedral aerial panoramic view, Germany. It is currently the tallest church in the world.

have a good time. Luxembourg is very close to Germany, but there’s more English spoken and it’s more culturally familiar.

What do you find most challenging?

The language will forever be challenging. The language is one thing I will never get used to. It is extremely difficult to learn German. It is known as one of the most difficult languages to speak well.

What do you miss most about home?

I miss my family the most. My mom and dad. Moving far away from loved ones can be really tough. Distance doesn’t diminish love; it can even make it stronger by cherishing the moments you have together. Family will always be a source of support and love, no matter how far away they may be.

What do you do when you do miss home?

I am always on video calls with my family.

What

is your advice to someone wanting to emigrate to Germany?

Relocating from South Africa to Germany is a big move. But if you must, make sure to research and prepare well first. Start learning the language, and connect with the expat community to get advice and make contacts. Above all, take the time to explore your new home, try the local cuisine, and immerse yourself in the German way of life. IB

NOT EVERYONE SHOULD start a business

MOST STARTUPS FAIL, LEAVING FOUNDERS DEVASTATED AND FINANCIALLY STRAINED. FOLLOWING YOUR PURPOSE CAN BE MORE REWARDING THAN STARTING A BUSINESS. JOINING AN EXISTING VENTURE MIGHT OFFER A MORE VIABLE PATH TO BUSINESS SUCCESS. INTRAPRENEURSHIP WITHIN ESTABLISHED COMPANIES IS A PROMISING ALTERNATIVE.

Starting a business is often touted as the ultimate dream—an exciting journey to financial freedom and personal fulfilment. Motivational speakers, business gurus, and even wellmeaning friends and family frequently push the narrative that anyone can and should become an entrepreneur. But here’s the harsh truth: not everyone should start a business.

UNCTAD reports South Africa has more than 2 million Small to Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME’s), representing over 98% of formal businesses, 20% of

these SME’s fail within the first two years, and two thirds fail within the first five years. Ouch!

These numbers reveal a brutal reality – most startups don’t succeed, and the fallout can be devastating. The entrepreneurial spirit is essential, but it doesn’t always mean starting something from scratch. In fact, the relentless push for everyone to start a business is not just misguided, it’s potentially harmful.

The reason

Many entrepreneurs lack the necessary skills and experience to effectively run and manage a business. Poor leadership and management skills will quickly cripple a business from within. Many entrepreneurs fail to understand their target market and its needs. They therefore, fail to develop a product or service that meets the needs of the target market, leading to low or no customer demand.

Low or no cash flow

Underestimating the amount of money required to sustain a business and insufficient revenue generation can quickly lead to business closure.

The emotions

Failing at a business venture isn’t just a financial setback – it’s a deeply emotional experience. Entrepreneurs invest their time, energy, and passion into their businesses. When these efforts don’t pay off, the emotional toll can be significant, leading to stress, anxiety, and depression.

My journey as an entrepreneur has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. I started young, at 9-years old in primary school. Over the years, I’ve faced numerous setbacks that have tested my resilience and determination.

In 2007, I had to shut down my record label after nearly 4 years. This failure was not just

a professional setback but also a personal one, contributing to my divorce due to unmet financial obligations and leading to a period of homelessness for about a week. These experiences were incredibly challenging, leaving me devastated and questioning my path. Unlike many, I did quickly recover and have been on an interesting journey of helping others achieve their entrepreneurial success as a business strategist and coach.

Yes, you can!

Instead of starting a business just because you can, it’s crucial to align your career with your true purpose and passion. This approach not only leads to greater personal satisfaction but also increases the likelihood of success.

Joining an existing entrepreneurial venture offers a viable alternative to starting a new business. By contributing to a team with a shared vision, you can leverage established resources and networks.

Conclusion

With high failure rates, significant emotional and financial tolls, and the need for intrinsic motivation, not everyone is cut out for entrepreneurship in its traditional sense. Instead, aspiring entrepreneurs should consider aligning their careers with their passions and purpose, joining existing ventures, or exploring intrapreneurship within established companies.

The journey of entrepreneurship is not a one-sizefits-all endeavour. By understanding the realities and exploring alternative paths, you can find a route that aligns with your strengths, passions, and goals, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and successful career.

Remember, success is not just about starting a business – it’s about finding and pursuing what truly matters to you. IB

We must, as a nation, forge ahead and take significant steps to close this gap further. To do so, our focus must be on encouraging young women to study and take up influential positions across South Africa’s many business and regulatory sectors, so that they too can encourage future generations of women to achieve greater things.

Fortunately, from agriculture to science, mining to banking, activism to academia, many South African women have and continue to leave their mark. In the buildup to Women’s Month celebrations in August, it’s important to reflect on the contributions of our many female trailblazers, and better position them as role models for other women who want to follow in their footsteps.

One influential woman who’s always on the public radar is the courageous and outspoken Professor Thuli Madonsela who served as Public Protector – one of the highest positions in the country’s legal system, between 2009 and 2016. Having had a hand in drafting the Constitution, she currently holds a chair in Social Justice at the University of Stellenbosch and continues to advocate for human rights, inspiring countless others with her unwavering commitment to equality and fairness.

We must also recognise Arlene Mulder, winner of the Forbes Woman Africa Technology and Innovation Award in 2019. She has additionally served or continues to serve on boards of prominent organisations in the education sphere, such as the Click Foundation and Pioneering Solutions Studio, as well as acting as a global ambassador for the ‘She Loves Tech’ programme. Through her tireless work in science and business, she is actively democratising education and advancing Africa’s digital problem-solving capabilities, which will benefit young women in the space as well as South Africa at large.

On the cultural scene, we’ve had Charlize Theron step up to the podium at the Oscars, and Tyla at the Grammys, but we should never forget the giants who secured our country’s foothold in the international cultural landscape. I speak, for example, of Miriam Makeba, a dedicated human rights campaigner and songbird who earned herself the affectionate labels of ‘Mama Africa’ and ‘Empress of African Song’.

Dolly Rathebe, another great icon of our cultural past, was one of the key voices of the South African jazz movement of the 19040’s and 50’s. She went on to have great success in the UK with the musical ‘King Kong’ and, like many black South African artists, went into exile. She returned to her homeland ahead of most of her peers, however, and, in her later years, immersed herself passionately in community work.

Finally, we must recognise the women who have played by far the biggest roles in each of our lives: the mothers, sisters, and wives who, while working and helping build South Africa in their own right, have also helped us men become successful. My late mother, for one, is someone who would now be described as the GOAT (greatest of all time).

She along with my incredible wife have played a major role in shaping my outlook on life, having been the people who I credit for my interest and successes in economics and finance, which saw me become the Director General of the National Treasure in the past, and the current CEO of the revered Moti Group of companies.

These women and many others like them have done much to shape the course of South Africa’s history and continue to inspire future generations. By celebrating their achievements and acknowledging their contributions, we can motivate more women to take up influential roles, ensuring that the potential of every individual is fully realised.

“B” word GETTING TO GRIPS WITH THE

SMART STRATEGIES FOR CLEARING CREDIT CARD DEBT

DEBT IS SNEAKY. THE HOLLYWOOD ROMANTIC COMEDY CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC TEACHES US HOW IT STARTS OFF SMALL AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, YOU ARE DROWNING IN SO MUCH DEBT, YOU CAN’T SEE A WAY OUT. BUT THERE IS A WAY. MANY, IN FACT.

The “B” word – Budget

Though it might sound like a cliché, one of the best strategies is to write down your budget just like your goals. It’s important to write it down because most of us have our budget in our mind, thinking we know what we are supposed to do only to miss critical items. A budget will help you to identify the areas or expenses where you can free up some money and take the savings to increase your credit cards payments.

Payment plan with creditor

After analysing your budget and how much you can put towards credit card debt, depending on your debt situation, talk to your credit card provider and negotiate payment terms. This will help you to cover the debt. However, payment plans are mostly granted to long-term customers with a good record of payments.

Timely payments

Pay on time month to month to ensure that the bank has debited the credit card. If not, make sure you deposit cash on your credit card. Defaulting on a scheduled payment will incur late fees and penalty interest, hence more debt. By paying on time, you will also improve your credit score.

Cut debt excess debt

While working on recovering, avoid accumulating any excess debt and lower your living expenses by differentiating your needs and wants. This will free up some money to channel a certain percentage to your credit card debt, and you can use the remaining percentage to build an emergency fund which you can rely on for unexpected expenses. Aim to have at least three months of living expenses which can be easily accessible.

Motivation

Know your why. Eric Thomas once said: “When you know your why, you don’t hit snooze no more, you find a way to make it happen.” Why is it important for you to clear your credit card debt? Is it for peace of mind, or freeing your money for other investments and projects? Whatever the reason, let this be the drive for you to work towards clearing your debt.

It’s not easy but it can be done. Remember, small steps will lead you to success in managing your debt. IB

BRAAIED BUTTER CHICKEN CURRY

BRAAIED BUTTER CHICKEN CURRY

Butter chicken seems to be the universal curry that everyone loves, and for good reason. It’s so damn tasty, and this version takes things

to a whole new braai level.

Serves: 6–8

Prep: Overnight + 30 minutes

Cook: 1 hour + resting time

INGREDIENTS

For the chicken

• 1½ cups double cream yoghurt

• 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

• a big knob of fresh ginger, finely chopped

• 2 tablespoons garam masala

• 2 tablespoons Kashmiri chilli powder

• 1 tablespoon ground cumin

• 2 teaspoons ground turmeric

• a squeeze of lemon juice

• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 2kg deboned and skinned chicken thighs

• 6 kebab sticks

For the potjie

• oil for frying

• a big knob of butter

• 2 large onions, peeled and chopped

• 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

• a knob of fresh ginger, finely chopped

• 1 tablespoon Kashmiri chilli powder

• 1 tablespoon garam masala

• 1 tablespoon ground cumin

• ½ tablespoon ground coriander

• 2 cups tomato purée

• 2 tablespoons fish sauce

• 1 tablespoon brown sugar

• 100g crème fraîche

• 1 teaspoon crushed dried fenugreek leaves (you’ll have to visit a spice shop for these)

• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• to serve: naan bread or basmati rice

• ¼ cup almond flakes, toasted

• fresh coriander

METHOD

1. To make the chicken, mix all the ingredients, except the chicken and kebab sticks, in a container with a lid. Add the chicken and give it a good massage, then refrigerate to marinate overnight. The next day, remove the container from the fridge and allow it to come to room temperature.

2. Thread the chicken onto the kebab sticks and braai over very hot coals. You are not trying to cook the chicken through, you just need to char and caramelise it. Brush each kebab with extra marinade at each turn, then set aside when you are happy with them. Allow to cool before removing the chicken from the kebab sticks. At this point you can cut the chicken pieces into small pieces or leave as they are.

3. To make the potjie,

over medium-high-heat coals. Add a splash of oil and the knob of butter and fry the onions until they soften and start to brown. Add the garlic and ginger and fry for a minute until fragrant. Toss in all the spices and fry for another minute. Stir in the tomato purée, fish sauce and sugar. Bring to a simmer over low-heat coals for 20 minutes to let the flavours make friends.

4. This step is optional, but it does give you that awesome curry house gravy result. After 20 minutes, remove the pot from the heat and use a hand blender to blitz the curry sauce until smooth. Return the pot to the heat and add the chicken. Stir in the crème fraîche and fenugreek leaves and simmer for another 15 minutes to cook the

in the Life ticks

Fierce, Fun + Fab

I ONCE SLID INTO THE DM OF A HOT GUY WITH THE RIDICULOUS QUESTION: “HOW DOES A GIRL ASK A GUY OUT WITHOUT SOUNDING CRINGEY?” TO MY SURPRISE, JONATHAN DIDN’T RUN FOR THE HILLS. INSTEAD, HE REPLIED WITH A RESOUNDING, “SURE, LET’S DO IT.” LITTLE DID I KNOW.

Dear Self,

Remember when that innocent DM set the stage for a date where I dined solo?

Likes, follows & comments were flowing, and before I knew it, we were all set for a real-life date. Like any typical rom-com heroine, I let my imagination run wild, fuelled by his charming voice notes. Date set, makeup on point, rocking a cute dress, I was a bundle of excitement, ready and waiting at the venue.

zone grey

But let’s rewind to the day before, when I confirmed our plans. His response, “Absolutely” had me doing a happy dance. Fast forward to the big day, I was there early and that sinking feeling started to creep in. I messaged him about our 7.30pm meet-up, and… crickets. Minutes turned to hours, my messages unread and my hopes fading faster than a deflating ballon. Two hours later, I sent another WhatsApp; still nothing. The night passed, and the next day brought no replies despite my triple text. Yep, I was left

hanging in the dreaded grey ticks zone.

It hit me: I’d been ghosted by a guy I hadn’t even met. Talk about a plot twist! I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. How did a virtual stranger manage to mess with my emotions like that? Sure, being stood up sucked, but my ego took a hit more dramatic than a soap opera cliffhanger.

Looking back, I realised it wasn’t about me. It was his loss for not being able to handle a simple text like, “Hey, I’m having second thoughts.” In a world where ghosting, zombie-ing, and breadcrumbing are practically dating norms, maybe it’s time for a little more honesty and a lot more kindness.

Most people give up reading after the first paragraph, so if you’ve made it this far to the end, congratulations, people. I’m proud of your curiosity and commitment to allowing me to entertain you with my dating stories.

PS Look out for the next InBoundSA edition, featuring another cringeworthy dating tale.

Pss: All you’re reading are true stories, with a sprinkle of exaggeration added for your reading pleasure.

BOOK REVIEW

GUILTY AND PROUD

Why should we read this book?

It tells the story of a courageous young white woman, who defied all that she had been taught to join a military organisation fighting against injustice. It traces Marion’s story from an unremarkable, happy childhood via her studies at Rhodes to where, as a Sunday Times journalist, she feels moved to join MK. The book is full of adventure and derring do, with her leaving the country illegally with a friend and desperately searching for the ANC across the border. Eventually she is trained in MK training camps and meets many famous ANC leaders like Chris Hani. She comes back to plant a bomb in the toilet of the notorious John Vorster Square where several detainees had been tortured to death. What inspired her? Where did she find the courage? What are the practicalities of carrying around a bomb? (You put it inside a large lady’s handbag.) It also describes her time in jail, and how she built relationships with prison wardens and other inmates. It is a gripping, true story about a SA woman who took the road less travelled.

Who will enjoy this book?

Mostly women, book clubs and reading circles, but also anyone interested in SA history and the recent past. Anyone who appreciates a good, gripping narrative.
