ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS
IT’S THE SEASON OF FUN ROAD TRIPS, FAMILY AND EATING (FATTENING) FOOD. HOW DO WE KNOW THIS? BECAUSE WHEN YOU STEP INTO A MALL, IT’S MARIAH CAREY PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND.
Years ago, when I was a reporter at a Sunday newspaper, I was invited to attend the opening of Oprah Winfrey’s school in Henley-On-Klip. Many celebrities (Mary J. Blige, Sydney Portier, Tandi Newton) walked past us media with bodyguards walking on either side.
But when Mariah walked past, the reporter in me vanished, and I became a huge Mariah fan. The rule was to walk swiftly past the media, wave, and head to the hall quickly. Not Mariah. As I shouted, “Mariah, I love you,” she broke the rules, walked straight to me, and giggled when she saw me drop my notebook and pen on the floor. I was just shocked.
All she said was, “Hello boys,” to me and another reporter standing next to me. After five minutes, her bodyguard stepped behind her, took her arm, and led her to where Oprah was receiving her guests. For this gesture, I will always be a Mariah fan, even if “All I Want for Christmas” is irritating to some.
This issue of InBound SA features the remarkable Mariam Cassim, CEO of Vodacom Financial, who shares her inspiring approach to staff and people development. We also spotlight former TV presenter Zoe Brown, who is now living in Australia and expecting twins. You may have seen her news in the media, but here we dive into how she’s preparing for this exciting journey.
Our travel features take us to Malawi and the breathtaking Mauritius. Enjoy, and please be safe on the roads.

YOUR SHOCKING TRAVEL STORIES
WHEN IN ROME
My friend Judy and I went backpacking in Slovakia. Missed our train to Hungary. We didn’t have enough money to stay at a
hotel, but we found a bar that was open all night long. So, we sat in the bar and managed to find enough money to buy a glass of wine each. While we were sitting there, we met and socialised with the locals. One local said we can catch a ride with them to Hungary. We were all on our way to the Rainbow Festival. Squeezed into a tiny car, we set off. We arrived at the festival, not knowing what it’s about. Next thing, we just saw people in some stream, naked, some even walking around with no clothes on. Though we were quite embarrassed, the next day decided we’d go skinny dipping with the others. When in Rome…

FIRST NIGHT ON THE JOB
On one of the first business trips I ever took in my early 20s, I stayed in a fancy hotel in Durban. I decided to have room service dinner. What I didn’t bank on was the server who brought me my food taking an unwelcome liking to me. He began calling my room repeatedly, asking me if I liked the food and if I wanted some company because a pretty woman should not eat alone. After what was probably the 10th call, I phoned reception and reported him. I found out the next day that it was his first night on the job. He never had a second one.

TECHNICAL EMERGENCY IN THE AIR
On a gloriously sunny day, I was hopeful of returning home from a long workday in Johannesburg. I boarded my flight, but my 5:30pm
departure was delayed. We eventually took off at 8:30pm. Mid-flight, the pilot announces that there is a technical difficulty and the plane had to return for an emergency landing at OR Tambo. I panicked! I asked the one cabin crew member if we were going to make it out alive. He responded by saying that these technical difficulties are a common occurrence. I never prayed as hard as I did on that day. An unbranded emergency plane was sent. We were on that flight by 10:30pm and landed at 12:30am for another adventurous trek home. Faith and travel go hand in hand.

LOCKED OUT OF OUR HOTELROOM
My boyfriend and I recently went camping. Our swag (like a tent and sleeping bag combined) got wet and we had an uncomfortable night on a narrow seat. The next day we were super excited to stay somewhere fancy. We were just getting cuddly in the spa when we were asked to move rooms. A bit flustered, we headed out to get food, only to return and find we’d not taken a key and couldn’t get back in. We were on a very high second floor. We tried everything and no staff member could be found, so we had to take the ladder from our roof rack and my boyfriend had to break into our room. A long wait for a warm bed.

CEO of Vodacom Financial and Digital Lifestyle Services
Mariam Cassim ON BOLD CHOICES AND ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
MARIAM CASSIM’S PATH TO SUCCESS HAS BEEN A MIX OF GRIT, RESILIENCE, AND A STRONG DESIRE TO OPEN DOORS FOR OTHERS, ESPECIALLY IN FINANCIAL AND DIGITAL SPACES. AS A CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT AND MBA GRADUATE FROM UCT’S GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS (WITH CUM LAUDE HONOURS), HER STORY STARTS WITH HARD WORK AND BIG SACRIFICES.
Tell us a bit about yourself – your name, title, and professional background?
I’m Mariam Cassim – a wife, mom to two kids under 13, a daughter, a mentor and a fun-loving friend. Professionally, I’m the CEO of Vodacom Financial and Digital Services.
Could you share some insights into your academic background and the degrees you’ve earned?
I’m a qualified Chartered Accountant and hold an MBA from the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business, where I graduated Cum Laude. It sounds impressive, but it wasn’t an easy journey. I grew up in a modest household where my parents made significant sacrifices to ensure my siblings and I received a good education.
While they did their part, it was up to us to excel academically if we wanted to go further. Through hard work, I earned bursaries and scholarships that helped me navigate my academic path. What key experiences have shaped your career journey?
I began my career in audit, which was part of the journey to qualify as a Chartered Accountant. After qualifying, I pursued a path in corporate finance and M&A, spending the first half of my career in that field. It provided a solid foundation, giving me a deep understanding of business valuation, financial analysis and the key drivers that matter to shareholders. However, over time, I found myself drawn to the excitement and hands-on nature of being involved in a business operationally. I then decided to pursue an MBA when my first child was just four months old,
and upon graduation, I shifted my focus entirely to business operations.
My journey led me to join Vodacom Financial and Digital Services when I was seven months pregnant with my second child. I took on the challenge of transforming a loss-making entity into the multi-billion-rand business it is today, contributing significantly to Vodacom’s revenue diversification strategy. Balancing the demands of motherhood and leadership was not easy, but it became a pivotal time in my life, shaping my perspective on both business and personal growth.
Why are you so passionate about financial and digital inclusion and what challenges have you faced?
As the CEO of a fintech business within a telco, I’m committed to advancing financial and digital inclusion across Africa. My journey has had its share of challenges, both as a woman in a predominantly male industry and as someone who grew up in a financially disadvantaged household. I experienced firsthand how the lack of access to financial services served as a barrier for my parents, limiting their opportunities. This background has profoundly shaped my perspective and strengthened my resolve to make financial inclusion a reality for others.
In my career, being a woman in a male-dominated industry has come with its own set of obstacles. From navigating unconscious biases to proving my expertise repeatedly, I’ve found myself needing to stay resilient and focused on the larger purpose I serve. Early on, I realised that the way forward was to build a network of mentors and advocates who understood and valued my contributions.
On a broader scale, bringing financial inclusion to Africa has required us to overcome significant challenges, such as limited infrastructure, digital literacy and mistrust toward financial services. It’s been a journey of learning, listening, and cocreating solutions that make a tangible difference in people’s lives. For me, this mission is both personal and professional: by expanding access to financial services, we’re enhancing convenience and empowering millions of people.”
Can you list some
of the offerings from your portfolio of solutions that are close to your heart and why?
Several of our products are particularly close to my
heart due to their transformative impact. Our consumer fintech solutions stand out by offering easy, fully digital access to funding, removing traditional barriers and eliminating the need for cumbersome paperwork. Our insurance products are equally meaningful, providing essential security that helps consumers recover quickly after losing an asset. I’m also proud of our SMME solutions, which empower small businesses through cashless payments and accessible funding options to fuel their growth.
What is your favourite professional memory?
At just 25, whilst working for an investment management company that had investments in multiple industries including telco, I received the incredible opportunity to attend the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona- one of the largest telco and tech conferences in the worldbecause my boss couldn’t attend and generously passed his invitation to me.
At that time, I knew very little about the telco industry, but I accepted the invitation with immense excitement and determination to learn.
I remember being in absolute awe of the speakers and the deep knowledge that they had.
Fast forward ten years, I was invited back to the same conference, this time as a speaker, discussing the intersection of the telco and financial services industries. That moment was full-circle achievement for me, not just because I returned as a speaker, but also because noone would’ve anticipated the rapid integration between these two industries. This was proof that if you dare to dream big enough and believe in it, the universe will conspire to make it a reality.
What’s harder being a mom or CEO?
Definitely being a mom – at least at the office, people listen! But seriously, both roles are challenging in their own ways. As a mom, the stakes are incredibly personal because you’re shaping a human being’s life, values and future. As a CEO, the responsibility is to steer a company toward success, impacting many lives and livelihoods. While being a CEO requires strategic decision-making and leadership, motherhood demands patience, empathy, and resilience. The truth is, each role makes me better at the other, so it’s less about which is harder and more about
how they enrich and challenge me in
How do you balance both?
Balance is a myth. It’s more about integration. I set clear priorities and boundaries, ensuring I’m present in the moment, whether at home or work. I also rely on a strong support system both in my personal life and professional setup. Planning and time management are crucial, but so is the ability to adapt when things don’t go as planned. Being able to compartmentalise helps me give my best to each role without letting one
Do you have any pet peeves?
I have a low tolerance for negativity and a “can’t-do” attitude. I believe in finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems. I also dislike complacency because growth only happens when we challenge ourselves and push beyond
Outside of your formal work setup, what do you enjoy doing?
Apart from my adventurous side, like riding thrilling and daring roller coasters with my kids, I also find a lot of joy in perfecting my culinary skills. Cooking is my creative outlet and a way to unwind. It’s a grounding experience that helps me relax after a highpressure week. And then, of course, having a set exercise routine also assists with stress relief and keeping healthy.
What do you want to be remembered for?
I want to be remembered as someone who led with empathy and vision, someone who inspired others to reach their full potential, both personally and professionally. Giving back is ingrained in my DNA and being remembered as someone who made a positive impact on society is something I strive for daily. IB

The
“I See Two”: A DOUBLE DOSE OF JOY FOR ZOË BROWN ANDERSON
BY MAURISHA NIEWENHUYS
FOR FORMER EXPRESSO TV PRESENTER ZOË BROWN ANDERSON AND HER HUSBAND ROBBIE, DISCOVERING THEY WERE HAVING TWINS WAS A MOMENT FILLED WITH BOTH SURPRISE AND JOY. ZOË RECALLS THE UNFORGETTABLE WORDS FROM HER DOCTOR WITH A SMILE: “I WAS ANXIOUS SINCE I COULDN’T SEE THE HEARTBEAT. BUT THEN THE ULTRASOUND PRACTITIONER STARTED GIGGLING AND ASKED ME, ‘YOU WERE ANXIOUS SINCE YOU COULD NOT SEE THE HEARTBEAT? I SEE TWO!’” IN THAT INSTANT, THEIR JOURNEY INTO PARENTHOOD TOOK ON A THRILLING, UNEXPECTED TWIST.
Now settled in Sydney, Australia, Zoë and Robbie are eagerly awaiting March, when they’ll welcome their twin boys. “We are so impatient to meet our boys. It was shocking to discover that we were having twins, but now it makes sense, as we cannot imagine our family any other way,” Zoë says.
A journey full of surprises
While thrilled about their upcoming arrivals, the couple’s path to parenthood hasn’t been without challenges. Having experienced a miscarriage earlier this year, Zoë and Robbie know the heartache of loss and are embracing this moment with gratitude.
She shares, “After feeling nauseated, Robbie insisted I take a test and I thought it was unnecessary. What a surprise when the results were positive. A few weeks later, cramping and bleeding led me to seek medical attention, and I was dreading the worst. But then, during the ultrasound, the practitioner giggled and told me, ‘I see two!’”
Embracing the cravings
Zoë’s pregnancy cravings have taken an unexpectedly healthy turn. “I’ve just quit sugar and caffeine, and instead have switched to sourdough bread, watermelon, and kiwi,” she says.
With twins on the way, she says flexibility is a priority. “We are placing a lot of our focus on when the babies are here. Robbie is Mr. A-Type and likes to plan everything with his Excel spreadsheets. Unfortunately for him, he’ll need to be flexible when the babies arrive because we don’t know how they’ll be, how they’ll sleep, or if they’ll prefer to sleep together or separately.
“It’s going to be trial and error for sure. We’ve started getting their nursery together. Our goal is to have everything done by the end of the year, as twins tend to come early, and then at least all the big-ticket items are in place. I’m looking forward to our antenatal classes and Infant CPR course in January 2025,” she says.
A fresh start down under
The Andersons recently relocated to Sydney, where they’re embracing a new chapter in their lives. “Sydney is incredible – safe, efficient, and beautiful. I love exploring while I still can,” says Zoë.
Though she left a fulfilling career behind, she has found peace in the transition. “I’m so grateful for this chapter and excited to focus fully on motherhood.”
Despite living in Australia, Zoë and Robbie are committed to raising their boys with a strong connection to their South African heritage. “I want them to know Afrikaans so they can connect with my parents and our heritage,” she shares. “They’ll grow up loving South African food, music, and, of course, mini-Springbok jerseys.”
She adds that adjusting to life in a new country has its quirks. “Sydney is enormous, and finding parking is a nightmare! Public transport is fantastic, though, and commuting by ferry is a treat. While I miss Cape Town’s beaches, I’m
slowly making friends and learning the Aussie slang.”
For those thinking about starting a family abroad, she offers some sage advice: “Use technology to stay connected with loved ones and remember why you made the move. It’s a big adjustment, but SA is always just a flight away.”
Motherhood anticipation
Zoë is eager to meet her sons and watch their individual personalities unfold. “They’ll share a birthday but will each have their own identity. While I’ll enjoy the occasional matching outfits, I want them to feel unique.”
Her past experience as an au pair has helped prepare her for this journey. “Caring for three young kids taught me to appreciate their milestones and be present. My career will always be there, but I’m focused on this new chapter for now.”

WHICH CHARACTER (REAL OR FICTIONAL) WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO ON HOLIDAY WITH?
Liezel van der Westhuizen (TV and radio presenter)
A holiday with Letshego Zulu would be both inspiring and enriching. Her journey of overcoming personal tragedy, achieving remarkable feats in endurance sports, and her commitment to promoting wellness would make her a truly motivating companion. Spending time with her could offer profound insights into resilience, mental strength, and how physical challenges can drive personal growth.
Manila von Teez aka Veon Wentzel (drag artist)
RuPaul – I’d probably be laughing all day, every day, and I’d find myself making RuPaul laugh too. She could show me her iconic dance moves, and I believe we’d have deep, meaningful conversations about life, business, legacy, and success – conversations I know would be incredibly beneficial to me.
Leanne Manas (Morning Live presenter)
Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby. I feel like going back in time to the days of ostentatious luxury and high society parties. Imagine glamorous evenings, lavish dinners, the most interesting guests, unexpected adventures and a beautiful mansion by the beach. His love for living to the fullest means every day would be exciting, luxurious and full of surprises.
Suzanne Paxton (radio presenter)
Aquaman. Because he is so handsome. And we can go diving with him. Something I love.
Jason Willemse (actor)
I would love to go on holiday with Sherlock Holmes, as his sharp mind and keen observations would make him a fascinating and intellectually stimulating travel companion. With Batman, I would expect an action-packed adventure filled with thrilling adventures and crimping fighting missions.
Chris Jaftha (actor)
If I could pick anyone to take on holiday right now, it’d be Mel Gibson. With Passion of the Christ 2 in the works (which he’s said is going to be mind bending), we’d dive into deep talks about faith, the movie itself, history, and storytelling while exploring some epic sites. But let’s be real—Mel’s got a wild side, too. So between those intense conversations, I’m sure there’d be plenty of laughs and a bit of off-the-wall adventure. Getting both the wisdom and the fun? That’s a holiday worth having.
Tracey Lange’s
JOURNEY OF LAUGHTER, GIVING BACK AND BIG DREAMS
BY MAURISHA NIEWENHUYS
TRACEY LANGE’S RADIO JOURNEY FROM HOBBYIST TO FULL-TIME CAREER IS NOTHING SHORT OF INSPIRING! WITH 17 YEARS IN RADIO AND 10 YEARS ON TV, SHE’S LIVING THE DREAM AND STILL LOVING EVERY MINUTE.
Her Flou Joke Friday, inspired by family fun, has become a fan favourite, and she’s all about giving back with projects like her Tracey Lange Cares campaign, which collected thousands of warm items for kids in need. After her production company’s Heart of the Hunter soared to #1 worldwide on Netflix, she is gearing up for even bigger things.
Your journey is incredible! Was there a defining moment when your hobby became a career?
I’d always told myself that if I did something for three years and found myself still fully committed after that, then it was something I had to push even harder at – it was meant for me. And that’s exactly how it happened. It felt quite organic.
How has reaching milestones like 10 years on TV and 17 years on radio impacted you?
Reaching 10 years on TV in 2022 and now 17 years on radio is something I do not take for granted. It still boggles my mind to think that I’ve achieved this and get to do something I love every day.
How did Flou Joke Friday start? Was it spontaneous or planned?
Flou Jokes are a FAMILY thing! Our family loves silly jokes, and it’s always been something we do. I started using it for the alliteration on Fridays, and it’s since become almost the only thing people know me for!
How was the transition from radio to TV with Bravo! and Dancing with the Stars SA? Any challenges?
I can’t say it brought any challenges. In fact, I’d argue it was easier. On TV, you have scriptwriters, sound technicians, directors, and producers who handle all the planning. On the radio, it’s all your responsibility. So, the transition to TV made things smoother and allowed me to focus even more on execution.
Has your recent trip influenced your perspective or sparked new ideas?
Travel allows my mind to expand, wander, and return with a host of new ideas. It’s so easy to get stuck in what we know and slip into our daily routine, but travel pulls you out of that, engaging a different part of your brain and sparking fresh ideas every time!
How does the trust from your audience play a role in the success of your community initiatives, like the TLC Party campaign?
The audience trusts me enough to share information about their community, which makes it easier to connect. This trust is incredibly helpful when starting new projects, like the launch of the TLC Party – the Tracey Lange Cares campaign. For this year’s winter campaign at Kfm94.5, people were encouraged to knit or donate warm items for various children’s homes. We collected thousands of items and were able to help eight different organisations!
What’s next for you? Are there any exciting new projects or dreams ahead?
I plan to continue growing my movie-producing career. After the success of Heart of the Hunter on Netflix, which our production company produced and which became the first African film to hit number one worldwide, I’m excited about the next projects!
Any advice for someone wanting to bring humour and joy into work while connecting authentically?
Just remember, you’re in a position of service. When you embrace the fact that serving others is a privilege, it shifts your perspective. You take yourself less seriously, but your work becomes even more meaningful, and you’ll naturally strive to give your best. IB

James Small WAS MORE THAN THE SENSATIONAL HEADLINES
BY PHILIP VAN DEN BERGH
FIVE YEARS AGO, RUGBY LEGEND JAMES SMALL PASSED AWAY IN HOSPITAL AFTER SUFFERING A MASSIVE HEART ATTACK. HE WAS JUST 50 YEARS OLD. NOW, HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS HOPE THAT A NEW BOOK –NO RULES: THE JAMES SMALL STORY – WILL OFFER FANS A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF A MAN THEY OFTEN DESCRIBE AS MISUNDERSTOOD.
Ican’t think of a time when James wasn’t part of my life. I was nine years old at a convent school – coincidentally, the same one his mother Vourn had attended. Back then, I wasn’t into sports. One day, I saw my father watching rugby and asked him to explain the game. His response was simple: “The white and red team is Transvaal, and number 14 is James Small.”
I remember watching James chase the ball, running outside the touchlines. When the camera caught him walking back into position, I just knew this was where I belonged. For a shy, awkward kid, James became someone to look up to.
When James scored his first try for the Springboks, my father had taped the game on the radio. He woke me up early to listen, and we waited eagerly for the news broadcast to see the footage. Rugby, and James, grew to be such a big part of my life that it’s hard to feel that level of excitement about anything else.
His talent shaped how I approached life. I see traces of him in everything – in Pablo Neruda’s poetry, Bukowski’s prose, and Marlon Brando’s performance in A Streetcar Named Desire. James was my teacher. His lessons were simple yet
profound: Play hard. Give it everything you’ve got.
To this day, I tackle life the way he played rugby – at full speed, 100% effort, flaws and all.
The first time I met James was in 1992, at the West Rand Show. He was larger than life. I asked him to sign a newspaper clipping of him toppling John Timu, the All Blacks’ full-back. He smiled, signed it, and wrote: “To Philip, Play Hard.”
Years later, while working at SA Rugby Magazine, I knew I had to put everything I’d learned into
practice. It was a high-pressure environment, filled with ambitious, hard-driving personalities. I figured if I could make myself indispensable, I’d eventually get to James – and in 2009, it finally happened.
One day, I walked into a sports café, and there he was. Meeting James in person was the ultimate reward for all my hard work. Not long after, he signed a Bankfin Rugby Card for me: “To Phil, Score that Try.”
In February 2020, I visited his mom. It would’ve been James’ 51st birthday. I brought her a Lorraine Efuke diamond ring as a gift, and we began discussing the idea of a tribute to James. Together, we decided to create something meaningful – a book filled with photos, memories, and reflections. We hoped it could honour James’ legacy and support his children’s education. And so, No Rules: The James Small Story was born.
The book is about the people James loved. It’s a collection of voices – some finding peace, others sharing words they never got to say while James was alive. It’s a Rugby World Cup story of hard moments and immense talent. But more than that, it’s a story about what it means to be human: our flaws, our triumphs, and the friendships that carry us through. As Clinton van der Berg aptly put it, it’s the most anticipated sports story of the professional era – a tale of love and war.
I hope people remember James for more than just the headlines. Remember him as a devoted father to two incredible children, a son who kept his promises to his mother, and a brother to Kelly – who now runs Wanderers Club as “Fourteen” in tribute to James.
Remember the way he made you feel – the humility behind the larger-than-life figure, the devastating talent that left us in awe, and the unforgettable moments he gave us on the rugby field. IB

James’ ex-girlfriend Christina Storm says: “James left a massive legacy because he lived a big life. No rules are about sharing his incredible life. He was a generous, kind and honest man. The media always portrayed him as a bad boy. But they missed the legacy he left behind for his kids, Ruby and Caleb.”

From rap to drag: JACK PAROW’S HILARIOUS DIE
TOLLIE
& MANILA SHOW DEBUT
DIE TOLLIE & MANILA SHOW IS NOW STREAMING ON SHOWMAX, FEATURING TWO OF SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST FABULOUS DRAG SUPERSTARS, TOLLIE PARTON AND MANILA VON TEEZ. SINGER JACK PAROW DISHES ON THE SHOW, BEING IN DRAG AND HIS ENTIRE EXPERIENCE.
How was your experience being in drag?
The experience was incredible –intense and overwhelming in the best way. I’ve gained so much respect for anyone who does drag. It’s not just about putting everything on; taking it all off afterward takes just as much time, effort, and skill.
What was your favourite aspect of the experience?
Seeing myself in the mirror for the first time, especially on stage. I had no idea what I looked like until that moment, and I was just like, “WTF?!”. I looked like a demented Spice Girl but in the best way!
Did you learn anything new about yourself?
That my neck can handle way more weight than I thought! My long cap was heavy, but that wig? It’s on another level!
Did it change any perceptions you had about women or drag queens?
Definitely. As I mentioned earlier, I have so much respect for drag queens. I knew the
process was long and meticulous, but you don’t truly understand until you experience it. And performing in those outfits and heels? It’s crazy!
Would you do it again?
100%! Hopefully for a music video next time!
Can you take us through the process of your transformation?
Honestly, not really. Haha. I had very little input - I just sat there and trusted the professionals. All the mirrors were covered, and I only saw myself for the first time when I stepped on stage. I left the transformation entirely in their hands.
Why should people watch the show?
Honestly, forget the questions (though they’re interesting)… it’s all of us in drag! Who wouldn’t want to see that? It’s hilarious! IB

Drake is artist of the year
In December 2016, Drake was named Spotify’s moststreamed artist of the year, and his monumental hit single, “One Dance,” took home the crown as the platform’s biggest song of the year. It makes sense that the Canadian rapper was such a singular force on the streaming service in 2016.
Beatle is attacked
In 1999, musician George Harrison and his wife, Olivia, were attacked by a knifewielding intruder in their home. Police deemed the terrifying event as a clear attack on the former Beatle, rather than a botched robbery.
Clay brings life AND A WILL OF ITS OWN
BY TEMO MPODI
ASTRID DAHL LIVES ON A SMALLHOLDING IN NOTTINGHAM ROAD, KWAZULU-NATAL WITH HER HUSBAND, HER CHILDREN, SEVERAL DOGS AND CATS, CHICKENS, PIGEONS, AND FISH. HER APPRECIATION FOR THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT – ROLLING GREEN HILLS, VAST BLUE SKIES, BREATHTAKING SUNRISES AND ALL THAT COMES WITH COUNTRY LIFE – IS REFLECTED IN THE BEAUTIFUL FORMS SHE CREATES. WE HEAR MORE ABOUT HER CREATIVE JOURNEY AND THE STORIES BEHIND HER CAPTIVATING CERAMIC FORMS.
What or who inspired you to pursue a career in ceramics, and how has your journey shaped your artistic style?
My love of working with clay and creating forms began at the Technikon Natal in 1995 when I met Hendrik Stroebel, my ceramics lecturer. I graduated in 1999 with a degree in Fine Art. I then moved to Nottingham Road, in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, to work in a bronze casting foundry. I crossed paths with the well-respected designer Neville Trickett, who introduced me to the botanical photography of Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932). This was a pivotal encounter, which sparked an evolution in my journey with clay. Taking my cue from Blossfeldt’s monochromatic prints, I work with white and black clay. I saw it as creating a pure canvas for light and dark to “shape” the piece.
Can you describe the creative process behind your work? What materials and techniques do you prefer to use?
Clay has a life and a will of its own. Each sculpture transforms throughout the making process. These natural, organic forms inspire the sculptures, but the development of each is multi-faceted as I allow the clay space to grow and interact with me as I shape it, creating pieces that either closely resemble their origins or ones that are more abstract.
At the outset, I choose to use white or black clay depending on how the shape I have in mind will interact with the light. The white is far more reflective, and simplistic forms do well in it. Because the black clay absorbs more light, it needs to be more intricate in its form to allow the light to bounce through it and give it movement and life. Watching the light and its shadows
shift and play across the smooth surface of each sculpture as the day passes into night creates a sense of fluidity and motion, having a calming and centring effect on the viewer. The finish is cool and silky to the touch, having been carefully consolidated and then sealed with museumgrade Renaissance wax.
My sculptures vary in complexity depending on the form I am looking to capture. From highly complex, anatomical pieces to pieces which capture a motion or a concept. From symmetrical to bilateral symmetrical, each comes to life as I engage with the clay. Although the sculptures are heavy, my intention is to create pieces that have a feeling of lightness and fragility and range from (30cm²) smaller works up to (80cm²) and sometimes larger.
What does this accolade to be part of the Clay Awars mean to you personally and professionally, and how
do you think it will impact your future work?
It is an honour and a privilege to be one among this group of amazing South African ceramicists, who are really good and talented.
How do you see the role of ceramics in contemporary art, and what message do you hope to convey through your work?
Ceramics has blossomed in the past few years into a respected form complementing sculpture and art. This shift from being perceived as a craft has allowed the important voices of these amazing artists to be heard around the world. Personally, I hope to convey a sense of pause, to inspire the viewer to take a breath and have a moment of contemplation.
What advice would you give aspiring ceramists or artists looking to make their mark in the industry?
It takes hard work, discipline, focus and commitment. You need to follow your passion and find what inspires you and draw from that. Don’t be too influenced by what is going on around you.
Do you have a particular ceramist whose work you enjoy?
Fujikasa Satoko, Vasso Fragkou, Alexandra Engelfriet, Merete Rasmussen, Eva Hild, Madoda Fani, Louise Gelderblom and Martine Jackson are amongst my favourites. IB

1. What’s a surprising fact about you that most of your followers don’t know?
In addition to the content I create online, I’m a registered mental health professional and the owner of two companies in completely different industries. I’ve always carved my own path – I’ve never had a traditional 9-to-5 job in my entire life!
2. What’s one lesson you’ve learned from a failure that ended up benefitting you in the long run?
I started as a self-taught beauty creator and placed in the top 12 of the NYX Face Awards in 2019, just months after learning SFX makeup. While I loved the art, my content only reached a few hundred people. Social media became an important outlet, but after two years, I realized I was losing my passion and my mental health was suffering.
Instead of quitting, I shifted focus to sharing insights from my mental health studies and trauma counselling. This led me to create South Africa’s first trauma-informed true crime series. My platforms transformed into safe spaces for viral narratives, and
I even won the Cause Award at the DStv Content Creator Awards for my work against GBV.
The biggest lesson? Pivoting – seeing failure not as an end, but as a redirection.
3. What’s your go-to outfit for a lazy day?
In summer, it’s definitely a pair of linen shorts and a tank top. In winter, I almost always reach for my cargo tracksuit pants and a polo neck crop. Comfort is key!
4. What’s the most unusual item on your bucket list?
If we’re talking unusual, I’d say visiting the sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica. Sloths are such fascinating creatures, and for me, they serve as a reminder that there’s an entirely different pace of life beyond the hustle and bustle of our everyday world. Plus, have you seen their smiling faces? Too cute!

1. What’s a surprising fact about you that most of your followers don’t know?
Many of my followers assume I am a full-time content creator, but in reality, I work full-time in tech as a product manager.
2. What’s one lesson you’ve learned from a failure that ended up benefitting you in the long run?
I’ve learned that it’s okay to start over and try something different from the original plan. When I started my career, I never intended to become a travel content creator or work in tech. I’m so glad I dared to decide that my original path in chemical engineering wasn’t right for me.
3. What’s your go-to outfit for a lazy day?
A comfy pair of jeans, a simple T-shirt and sneakers.
4. What’s the most unusual item on your bucket list?
I want to go to Scotland to see the highland cows! I love animals and highland cows particularly look so cute in photos. You don’t find them here in Africa so I would travel to see them.

1. What’s a surprising fact about you that most of your followers don’t know?
My followers may have caught glimpses of this, but I have a deep love for the planet and try to live as sustainably as possible. Whether it’s recycling, clothes swapping/ thrifting, or grounding myself in nature, I believe in mindful living. I also love partnering with brands that align with this ethos, like Berlook – a sustainable swimwear brand made from recycled materials. Every small step counts toward protecting the Earth, and I’m passionate about encouraging others to join me on this journey, however they can.
2. What’s one lesson you’ve learned from a failure that ended up beneftiting you in the long run?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned from failure is the importance of adaptability. Often times I don’t see the results I’d like — whether it be stats on a reel or a marketing campaign. Instead of seeing it as a failure, I take it as a learning opportunity to adjust my approach, analyse the data more thoroughly, and be more flexible in my strategy. In the long run, this taught me that being adaptable is key to success in any project, and now, I embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and improvement.
3. What’s your go-to outfit for a lazy day?
My go-to outfit these days is definitely activewear! Since going freelance, I’ve found it super helpful to stay in gym gear or comfy workout clothes. It keeps me motivated to squeeze in a gym session or go for a walk during breaks. Plus, it’s perfect for staying productive while feeling comfortable!
4. What’s the most unusual item on your bucket list?
One of the most unusual items on my bucket list is to spend a few weeks living in an off-grid, eco-friendly cabin on a tropical island — almost like a retreat where I feel safe, can practice daily yoga, eat organic, and be completely immersed in nature. I’d love to disconnect from technology, practice sustainable living firsthand, and ground myself in a way that’s hard to do in everyday life! Bring surrounded by like-minded individuals.

1. What’s a surprising fact about you that most of your followers don’t know?
Most people see me as a fitness enthusiast because of my app, Gutsy, and my Instagram content, but here’s
something they might not know: I’ve always had a passion for acting. From improv shows at age seven to starring in the international music video “Changes,” which has over 110 million views, acting has been a big part of my life. It’s something I’d love to revisit someday – maybe even as the host of Boer Soek ’n Vrou!
2. What’s one lesson you’ve learned from a failure that ended up benefiting you in the long run?
When I finished my degree in Industrial Psychology, I faced a huge decision: pursue a traditional 9-5 or follow my entrepreneurial dreams. I feared failure and felt pressure to use my degree, but I knew I was called to something bigger. Starting a business was financially tough and full of moments where I felt like giving up, but my faith and the support of my husband, family, and friends kept me going. From this journey, I learned resilience, faith, and the importance of trying despite fear. Choosing the uncertain path turned out to be the best decision of my life, allowing me to live my passion and inspire others.
3. What’s your go-to outfit for a lazy day?
Since I work from home, I try to dress up to feel like the “boss woman” I want to be. But on weekends, I go straight for sweatpants, an oversized hoodie, and fuzzy slippers – or my cosy onesie in winter!
4. What’s the most unusual item on your bucket list?
I’m an adventurous person, and my husband and I have a big bucket list! One of the more unique goals is to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru –mainly to see the alpacas! I’m such a fan that my first car’s licence plate even said “llama.” Another unusual item is completing a full Ironman race abroad!
Willem Botha ON BEAUTY AND BOLDNESS
BY TEMO MPODI
BREAKING INTO THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY IS NOT A WALK IN THE PARK, BUT WILLEM BOTHA SHOWS US IT IS POSSIBLE. HE OPENS UP ABOUT HOW HE BUILT – AND CONTINUES TO GROW – THE WILLEM BOTHA BEAUTY EMPIRE, SHARING SOME KEY LESSONS HE LEARNED.
Willem Botha, you have become a name in the beauty industry and continue to make an impact. How did you get here?
I’ve always had a love for photography, ever since a young age. When I started doing photoshoots with friends, they never felt comfortable doing their makeup. One day, I picked up their makeup and decided to do it myself. Since that day, I’ve never taken any formal classes. It didn’t take long for me to realise the true power of makeup. After more than 15 years in the makeup and photography industry, we decided to launch our own makeup company in 2022.
Isn’t it amazing how destiny unfolds? You’re incredibly multi-talented,
excelling in singing, presenting, and acting. How have you managed to stay on top of it all, especially with the added responsibility of running your beauty brand?
I never wanted to be just a singer, actor, or presenter. I love being a businessman. I’ve always enjoyed a challenge and a new adventure. But what’s most important to me is striving to be the best I can be. It’s easy to compare yourself to others or their brands, but I prefer to focus on my own success and aim to be a better version of myself each day.
What does it take to build a luxurious brand like Willem Botha?
Persistence is key. It’s as simple as that. If you’re willing to work harder than the person next to you, success will follow. In my early days, I used to sleep until noon, but I soon realised that if I wanted to be a successful businessman, I had to get up early and create my own opportunities. There isn’t a single day that goes by where I’m not eager to learn more.
That’s profound. What are the tips for keeping your beauty empire going?
I love being driven by the best leaders in the world. Sometimes it’s makeup artists, and other times it’s sports stars. If you watch any documentary about a successful athlete like David Beckham or Serena Williams, you can see how they dedicated their lives to their craft. There are many days when I’m exhausted, but
I remind myself how long I’ve worked for these moments. I love what I do, and that makes all the difference.
Being in such a demanding industry, how do you manage to stay grounded and keep everything together?
I have an amazing team that works with me. It’s crucial to surround yourself with the right people. We’re very lucky at Willem Botha Beauty because all four of the co-founders are driven to make the company successful. We dream big and
constantly push ourselves to reach our full potential.
How do you stay on-trend with new techniques in the beauty industry?
It is important to always be on the lookout for current trends. But a trend is almost too late to jump on. Find your own unique stamp that will make you stand out from the rest. So that when people see your work they will know immediately – that is a photo that Willem Botha took. Or that is definitely Willem’s makeup!
Own lane is the best lane. You hold make-up masterclasses to teach and enhance women’s beauty, apart from making women look beautiful, what knowledge do you want them to walk away with from Willem Botha?
Most women look at magazine covers or people on TV and think it is impossible for them to also look like that. I want to show women that with the right makeup and technique every woman can also look and feel like a cover star! Stop comparing yourself to the person next to you because I truly believe that everyone has something beautiful about them.
Can you share some tips and tricks on how to make the most of Willem Botha Beauty makeup?
When you use the right makeup, you don’t need much to make a statement. Our 12-colour Eyeshadow Palette is so pigmented that just a little will make your eyes pop. The same goes for our foundation, blush and highlighting powders. We share these easy tips on our social media so everyone can recreate the looks at home.
What’s one timeless tip you’d share with everyone in the beauty industry, as well as all beauty enthusiasts?
Practice. Practice. Practice. It’s as simple as that. I always tell people, if a boy from the farm who went to an agricultural school can do it, so can they. There were so many times when my friends would go out, and I would stay home perfecting a certain technique or look.
Which country do you consider the leader in the beauty industry?
I absolutely love South Korea. The products from all Asian countries are amazing, and they’re undoubtedly the leaders in the makeup industry. IB
REVERSING THE AGEING CLOCK BY tackling tissue loss
BY DR. SHERYL SMITHIES
AS WE AGE, VISIBLE SIGNS LIKE WRINKLES, SAGGING, AND CHANGES IN SKIN TEXTURE OFTEN DRAW OUR ATTENTION. BUT LESS COMMONLY DISCUSSED IS THE ROLE OF HARD TISSUE LOSS, SPECIFICALLY IN OUR BONES, WHICH PLAYS A CRUCIAL ROLE IN THE AGEING PROCESS.
Understanding hard tissue loss
Starting around age 35, our bodies begin to lose collagen rapidly. This vital protein helps keep skin firm and elastic, countering visible signs of ageing. But the effects of ageing reach deeper than the skin’s surface. Beneath it, changes in our facial bones and skull shape occur, reshaping the underlying structure.
health – effectively helping restore a more youthful structure.
Over time, bones in the face – including the eye sockets, cheekbones, and jaw – begin to shrink and shift. This gradual reshaping results in a smaller skull structure, which loosens the skin’s fit, leading to areas of sagging. These changes can make us look older than we actually are.
Traditional facial-aging treatments often involve injections of hyaluronic acid, fat, or other fillers to smooth and reshape the skin. While effective, these methods don’t address the underlying issue: hard tissue loss and the narrowing of dental arches, a primary contributor to facial ageing.
Using technology to turn back the clock
Recent advancements have revolutionised dental and aesthetic treatments. Techniques to widen the dental arches, for example, can rejuvenate facial appearance and enhance overall dental
Clear aligner therapy, a less invasive alternative to traditional braces, is one such option. The cost, which depends on the number of aligners needed, typically ranges from R60 000 to R120 000. Guided by sophisticated AI technology, these aligners achieve precise, effective realignment of the teeth and improvement of dental arches.
Other advanced techniques, including biostimulators and fillers, offer additional options for facial rejuvenation. Starting at R2 500, these treatments can help build collagen, enhance facial contours and even address issues like breathing and sinus problems. The outcome is a more youthful appearance and improved wellness.
Taking a holistic approach can help combat the effects of aging. By integrating dental treatments with advanced facial aesthetic procedures, you can achieve long-term, natural-looking results that go beyond surface-level improvements. IB

MIXED METALS beauty tips WITH MAC
LESS IS MORE, BUT SOMETIMES, MORE IS JUST WHAT YOU NEED. LET YOUR EYES TAKE IT ALL IN AS THE BEAUTY WORLD EXPANDS. MAC’S NATIONAL ARTIST, MOKGADI SHOKGOLE, REVEALS A FEW BEAUTY SECRETS YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED.
Tell us about MAC’s December trend –what can we expect?
December is all about mixed metals! We’re embracing metallics in both color and finish, not only in makeup but also in accessories. It’s a season of luxury and boldness – where more is definitely more.
Metallic looks are often reserved for nighttime. Can we expect to see this trend during the day, too?
Absolutely! We’re in a time when makeup colours are versatile enough to be worn anytime. The key lies in how you apply it: think about placement, technique and opacity to make it work beautifully from day to night.
How can someone adapt the mixed metals look to suit their unique features?
It’s all about choosing your focus feature! Try a metallic eyeliner to make your eyes pop, or add a touch of shimmer to your cupid’s bow and cheeks. You can even play with various metallic tones to create a dimension that suits your style.
What’s the best way to wear the mixed metals trend?
Personally, I love it on the eyes. It allows you to experiment with a range of tones and finishes, whether you want a fun, playful look or a sultry,
smoky vibe for the evening.
What advice would you give to someone hesitant about trying mixed metals?
Think of it as adding a little stardust to your face! Start by accentuating your best feature with a subtle metallic highlight. You’re in control of how bold you go – even a hint can make a beautiful impact. IB

DEEP STORIES THROUGH FASHION
BY TEMO MPODI
THEBE MAGUGU, A LUXURY SOUTH AFRICAN FASHION BRAND, RECENTLY SHOWCASED THEIR NEW SS25 COLLECTION TITLED REPARATIONS AT PARIS FASHION WEEK. THIS DEEPLY PERSONAL AND EVOCATIVE COLLECTION EXPLORES THEMES OF FAMILY, IDENTITY, AND RECONCILIATION, DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM THE DESIGNER’S JOURNEY OF RECONNECTING WITH HIS ESTRANGED FATHER, WHO HAS ROOTS IN MALAWI.
Thebe emphasises that the collection goes beyond just Malawi, delving deeper into the fundamental elements of the universe. “The collection features interesting references such as the Malawi river, an original African-inspired print and abstract prints uniting elements such as water, fire, and earth, and one of our favourites, a pleated skirt featuring an image of Malawian women walking against a rural landscape. This made the first complete runway collection shown at Paris Fashion Week, previously we’ve exclusively shown via lookbook/film. The collection also features a key print this season, a scan of a cow’s hide makes an appearance on a couple of looks created in a thick luxurious satin and a classic trench coat.” Magugu says.
“This collection is a reflection of my own journey towards understanding the man my father is and how our relationship has shaped who I’ve become. It’s about acknowledging the hurt and finding beauty in healing. It’s about acknowledging the hurt and finding beauty in
the process of healing.
“Reparations aren’t only about the past; they are about building a future with new foundations. The collection I have created speaks to this,” he says.
Thebe Magugu’s collections have always carried a story and deep meaning, with a focus on getting to the root of things. He explains, “I have always been interested in fashion that explores African stories, particularly those that remain undercelebrated. It’s important for us to use fashion as a medium to explore topics, learn more, and share everything we’ve learned through our extensive research. Education is a central concept in everything we do.”
Thebe Magugu’s one must-have wardrobe essential…
A sisterhood tank top. It’s the quintessential Thebe Magugu piece to own for the summer. This holiday we’re introducing a new version that comes in two colour ways of black and vanilla. IB

Jump-start your gym comeback: ESSENTIAL EXERCISES TO REBUILD STRENGTH & FITNESS
BY JASON DUNNING (HEAD OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AT NPL (NUTRITIONAL PERFORMANCE LABS)
IF YOU’RE FEELING THE URGE TO HIT THE GYM AGAIN, IT’S ESSENTIAL TO BUILD A SOLID FOUNDATION BEFORE GETTING BACK IN. EXERCISING AT THE GYM DEMANDS STRENGTH, STABILITY, AND ENDURANCE, BUT THE RIGHT EXERCISES CAN MAKE THE TRANSITION SMOOTHER AND MORE REWARDING. HERE ARE FIVE AREAS TO FOCUS ON TO HELP YOU BUILD STRENGTH, IMPROVE BALANCE, AND ENHANCE YOUR OVERALL FITNESS.
1Barbell or bodyweight exercises
Barbell exercises like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses are excellent for building muscle mass and strength. They engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, making your workouts more efficient. If you are easing back into the gym, bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, squats, lunges and pull-ups are also effective. Barbell and bodyweight exercises also improve functional strength, making everyday activities easier.
2
Upper and lower body foundations
Prioritise foundational movements for both the upper and lower body. Compound exercises such as overhead presses and rows strengthen the shoulders, back, and arms, while squats, deadlifts, and lunges target the legs and glutes. Building strength in these muscle groups enhances posture and balance, reduces the risk of injury, and provides a solid foundation for more advanced exercises.
3 Targeting balance and strength
Incorporate exercises that challenge your stability, such as single-leg Romanian deadlifts or single-arm overhead presses. Training unilaterally (one arm or leg at a time) can help correct muscle imbalances and is a great functional approach. These exercises build muscle and improve your coordination, reducing the likelihood of injuries. They also enhance athletic performance by ensuring your muscles work together effectively.
4
Importance of core
A strong core is the foundation of all movement. Planks, bird dogs, Russian twists, and leg raises are a few examples that help strengthen the abdominal and lower back muscles. A strong core improves posture and overall stability, and it also supports better performance in strength training and cardiovascular exercises.
5 Aerobic fitness
Finally, don’t overlook the importance of cardiovascular exercises like running, cycling, or swimming. These activities improve heart health and aerobic capacity, boost endurance, support weight management, and promote mental well-being by reducing stress and anxiety. While getting back into the gym after a break can feel intimidating, it’s also a chance to rediscover your strength and passion for fitness. By incorporating these exercises into your routine, you’ll build a strong foundation, enhance your overall health, and grow more confident with each session. Take it one step at a time and celebrate your progress – after all, the hardest part is often just getting started. IB
IS MANLINESS A THREAT TO MEN’S HEALTH?
BY DR MICHAEL MOL
PROSTATE HEALTH IS OFTEN THE UNSPOKEN ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM, BUT IT’S A CRITICAL ASPECT OF MEN’S WELLBEING THAT DEMANDS ATTENTION. WITH ONE IN 25 SOUTH AFRICAN MEN FACING A PROSTATE CANCER DIAGNOSIS, IT’S TIME TO BREAK THE SILENCE AND TAKE CONTROL OF OUR HEALTH.
There’s an indestructible, Robert DeNiro-esque tough-guy in most men who think they’re bullet proof when it comes to their health. But you can’t ignore your prostate and muscle your way through without consequence. I should know. I’ve seen it up close. My father fought the battle – and so did Robert DeNiro, and both won –because they caught it early.
The physical fundamentals for men focus on fitness, weight control, and heart health – and rightly so, but prostate health is equally crucial, especially in South Africa, where one in 25 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetimes. For Black South African men, the risk sky-rockets to one in five, and it usually presents in a more aggressive form too. Don’t ask why –we’re don’t know (yet). So why do we overlook it and try to dodge the check-up bullet? Perhaps because “prostate” doesn’t exactly scream heroism or six-pack abs, but if we’re serious
about our healthspan and lifespan, it’s time to change that.
Whether it’s a pride thing or we just don’t like talking about sensitive issues below the belt, too many of us skip essential screenings and stick our heads in the proverbial sand. Though, oddly enough, there has ever been a recorded incident of an ostrich putting their head in the sand, but it’s nonetheless an attitude that can mean the difference between catching a problem early (treatable) or missing it altogether (untreatable.)
So here goes, gloves off… which I realise is a terrible metaphor in this instance, but we can’t afford subtlety when early signs of prostate cancer can often be so subtle. The simplest rule of thumb is this: if you notice any changes in how you’re peeing – it’s worth taking seriously. Common signs like difficulty starting or stopping, frequent trips to the bathroom – especially at night, or blood in your urine (which looks like a light rose wine). Don’t write off unexplained back pain either – it could be your prostate trying to send you a message. If you’re currently experiencing any of those glitches, don’t panic - more often than not these symptoms don’t mean cancer, but they are worth investigating further – because early detection and intervention saves lives… and erections!
A simple PSA test, which measures ProstateSpecific Antigen, is a good start and can flag early signs of trouble.
Let’s address the gloved elephant in the room
Traditional prostate exams aren’t exactly anyone’s favourite – neither yours, nor your doctors, trust me. The good news is that advances in prostate health screening are making the process less invasive. A simple PSA test, which measures Prostate-Specific Antigen, is a good start and can flag early signs of trouble. It’s a quick blood draw, not a boxing match. So do the right thing, grit
your teeth, keep your pants on, stick out your arm, and get it done today. No excuses.
When should a guy start keeping tabs on his prostate? The general recommendation is to begin screenings at age 45-50, but if you have a family history of prostate (or breast cancer), as I do, it’s wiser to start even earlier. A yearly checkup really is a small investment with big returns.
Can you prevent cancer? There’s simply no way to guarantee you won’t get cancer, but you can significantly lower your risk. Research shows about 40% of all cancer cases are linked to behaviours we can control, and alcohol is one of the biggest factors. Studies show it’s responsible for six different types of cancer. How much alcohol you may be asking? According to the World Health Organization, no amount of alcohol is considered safe. But it isn’t the only thing on the list. Tobacco use, poor diet, lack of exercise, and being overweight also raise your risk. The good news? These are all things we can change, which means your choices today really do matter for tomorrow.
So, let’s make some smart ones – like eating more real food, less junk food. Tomatoes are especially good for your prostate (high in lycopene) because if it comes FROM a plant, it’s good – if it was made IN a plant, it’s not good. Research also shows that regular physical activity, especially vigorous exercise, lowers your risk of advanced prostate cancer, which means hitting the gym benefits more than just your selfie game. Your prostate (and the rest of you) will thank you.
How do you tell the difference between an ageing thing or something more serious? As a rule, never shrug off new or persistent changes in your health, especially if they’re related to urination, pain, or unexplained fatigue – that’s not how ageing works. The “I’m just getting old” excuse doesn’t cut it when it’s something that could be serious – talk to your doc, there’s no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your health.
So, Gentlemen, put your money where your moustache is and take an active role in your wellbeing, remembering this: Just because you’re not sick, doesn’t mean you’re healthy. Health is not a default setting, it’s a daily pro-active pursuit that’s worth your time and energy. Why? Because it will give you more time and more energy to do all the things that matter most to you. IB
Festive fit: STAY ON TRACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
BY EMMA SCHOLTZ
THE FESTIVE SEASON IS HERE! IT’S THE TIME FOR JOY, CELEBRATION AND INDULGENCE – BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A RECIPE FOR REGRET. AS A HEALTH AND FITNESS PROFESSIONAL WITH OVER 11 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, I KNOW THE STRUGGLE IS REAL WHEN IT COMES TO BALANCING HOLIDAY FUN WITH YOUR HEALTH GOALS.
What if I told you that there are ways to enjoy all the special occasions incoming without doing damage and enjoying your holiday time with
minimal overthinking? Sound good? Let’s get into your four festive season essentials:
1Calorie consideration
Calorie counting may sound tedious, but it can be your secret weapon this season. Download a tracking app to keep tabs on what you eat and drink without going on a strict diet. By entering your meals, treats, and beverages, you can see how many calories you’re consuming and adjust accordingly. This proactive approach helps you make informed choices, plan meals, and enjoy holiday treats without losing sight of your goals. Over time, tracking becomes second nature, providing reassurance and peace of mind as you navigate celebrations.
2
Hydrate between drinks
With more festivities often comes more alcohol. Make it a habit to drink a glass of water with each alcoholic beverage. This simple strategy helps combat hangovers, reduces the urge to overindulge and supports your liver and digestive system. Staying hydrated will leave you feeling refreshed and energised, not to mention glowing skin and improved digestion. Plus, you’ll be less likely to wake up with a nasty hangover!
3
Make movement fun
During the busy holiday season, staying active can easily slip down your priority list. Counteract this by incorporating fun, social activities with loved ones – think hiking, dancing, or beach outings. This way, you’re moving without it feeling like a chore. If you indulge a little more, just ramp up the fun activities! Daily walks, whether in the fresh air or around shopping malls, are also a great way to keep active and burn extra calories. Remember, any movement is better than none!
4
Prioritise rest
Amid the celebrations, don’t forget the importance of rest. Aim for at least 8 hours of sleep each night, and take the time to relax and recharge during the day. Whether you’re lounging by the pool or enjoying a good book, these restorative moments are vital for regeneration and energy restoration. Prioritising rest will help balance your stress levels and boost your overall well-being. You’ll not only feel better but look better too, which is the ultimate holiday flex!
The Festive Season is all about connecting, celebrating, and rejuvenating. Embrace this time with confidence, knowing that you can enjoy all the festivities while staying on track with your health. As you enter 2025, you’ll be so excited and ready to tackle new goals, opportunities, and adventures. Let’s make this holiday season one to remember – fit, fabulous and free from guilt! IB
UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF electrolytes
BY HANNAH KAYE
ELECTROLYTES ARE MORE THAN JUST BUZZWORDS – THEY’RE ESSENTIAL FOR OUR BODY’S DAILY FUNCTIONS. THESE VITAL MINERALS KEEP OUR HEARTS AND MUSCLES IN CHECK TO REGULATE HYDRATION. BUT HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU’RE GETTING ENOUGH, AND WHEN DO YOU NEED TO TURN TO SUPPLEMENTS? HANNAH KAYE, A SEASONED FUNCTIONAL NUTRITIONIST, BREAKS DOWN EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTROLYTES, THEIR ROLE IN YOUR BODY, AND HOW TO MAKE BETTER CHOICES FOR A HEALTHIER, MORE ENERGISED LIFE.
How do electrolytes support our body’s everyday functions, and why are they crucial for maintaining health?
Electrolytes are essential minerals that carry electrical charges, making them crucial for the body. They play a key role in muscle contractions (including those of the heart), maintain proper nerve function, and are vital for blood pressure regulation. They also help regulate fluid balance by controlling the movement of water between cells and tissues.
What signs may indicate an electrolyte imbalance, and which symptoms should we pay attention to?
Many symptoms can be related to electrolyte imbalance, ranging from muscle cramps and headaches to more serious issues like confusion, dizziness, heart palpitations, vomiting and even seizures. If you’ve been sweating heavily, spent too much time in a steam room or sauna, or switched to a keto diet, it’s important to be especially mindful of these symptoms.
Which foods and beverages naturally offer a good balance of electrolytes, and when might supplements be necessary?
Sugar-free coconut water and green vegetable juices generally offer a combination of potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride. However, it is still important to add some sodium in the form of Himalayan rocksalt – probably around ¼ teaspoon per 500ml. However, an electrolyte supplement will generally be necessary during/after intense or prolonged physical activity (like long-distance running), during heat waves if you are sweating excessively, during/after prolonged episodes of gastro or vomiting/diarrhoea, if switching to a ketogenic diet as carb restriction reduces insulin which increases sodium excretion in urine and with some medical conditions (but always check in with your doctor).
Another key time to consider electrolytes is during travel, especially if you’re in high-altitude or dry environments. Taking electrolytes while flying can be particularly beneficial, especially if you’re prone to dehydration.
How do factors like exercise, climate, and hydration affect our body’s electrolyte needs?
• Exercise: intense or prolonged activity will lead to a loss of electrolytes through sweat. Aside from dehydration, this can also lead to cramping.
• Climate: hot climates with high humidity, which induce sweating, can lead to a loss of electrolytes. This is why it is essential to hydrate and use an electrolyte supplement when in extreme weather for extended periods.
• Hydration: inadequate water intake can deplete electrolytes and lead to fatigue and dizziness. However, overhydration can deplete sodium levels, which can also lead to headaches, nausea and confusion. Ideally, we should be drinking at least two litres of water per day, but if in a very hot climate or exercising for long periods, that amount will need to be increased.
What are some common misunderstandings about electrolytes and electrolyte drinks, and how can we make better-informed choices?
Most people with normal activity levels can meet their electrolyte needs through a balanced diet. Electrolytes should be used strategically and only when necessary. Many electrolyte drinks, however, contain high amounts of sugar and artificial flavours, which can lead to excess calorie intake and blood sugar issues. Always choose electrolyte drinks or powders made with natural ingredients and no added sugar. Use them only when needed – excessive supplementation can have negative effects. IB
Mountain Zebra National Park
– ONE OF THE HIDDEN GEMS OF THE EASTERN CAPE
MOUNTAIN ZEBRA NATIONAL PARK (MZNP) IS SITUATED IN THE EASTERN CAPE, ONLY 12KM FROM THE TOWN OF CRADOCK AND LESS THAN THREE HOURS AWAY FROM THE NEAREST AIRPORT IN PORT ELIZABETH.
MZNP is a success story in conservation. It was proclaimed over 80 years ago to protect the remnant population of 11 Cape Mountain zebras on the 1 712-hectare property, with fewer than 100 estimated to remain in South Africa at the time. Today, the 28 386-hectare park is home to over 1 100 of these animals, having translocated many
Cape Mountain zebras over the years to create breeding populations in other national parks and game reserves, both public and private.
The park is renowned as the only national park where guests can take part in a cheetah tracking activity. Visitors join an experienced guide on a game drive vehicle as they track one or more of the park’s collared cheetahs using a telemetry
device. Once close enough, the group ventures on foot to search for the animal(s) and, at times, can get as close as 20 metres to a wild cheetah in its natural habitat.
However, finding one or more cheetahs is not guaranteed, as it depends on the terrain they are in and the signals received from their collars. In addition to cheetahs, the park also boasts lions, buffalo, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, blackbacked jackals, aardwolves, a variety of buck species, small mammals, and reptiles. Birdlife is also prolific throughout the park.
An early-morning game drive is an ideal way to start the day – either as a self-drive or on a guided game drive. Sunset drives are recommended for those who want to enjoy a Karoo sunset over the dramatic landscape with light snacks and a drink. These drives also provide the opportunity to spot both daytime and some nocturnal animals. Night drives, meanwhile, can reveal fascinating animals such as the aardwolf, black-backed jackal, and others as they go about their nightly foraging activities.
For off-road enthusiasts, there are several 4x4 options to choose from, each offering panoramic views of the
park and abundant wildlife sightings.
Those who prefer exploring the park on foot will enjoy the two trails in the rest camp. For a more challenging experience, the guided Salpeterkop hike offers a 360-degree view of the Karoo landscape and shares an intriguing historical tale about the famous chessboard used by British soldiers during the Anglo-Boer War. There is also a drive and short walk to view San cave paintings within the park.
In the rest camp, you’ll find a shop for essentials and a restaurant. Accommodation options include a camping/caravan site, cottages, family cottages, and more luxurious rock cottages. Further inside the park, the Doornhoek Guest House and two mountain cottages offer more secluded overnight options.
NAPIER
NAPIER IS A SMALL TOWN, FILLED WITH NATURAL BEAUTY IN THE HEART OF THE PICTURESQUE OVERBERG REGION. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF GREAT RESTAURANTS, COFFEE SHOPS AND PUBS IN, AND AROUND, THE BUSTLING FARMING TOWN, AND THE WINE FARMS IN THE AREA ARE ALWAYS WORTH A VISIT.
Discover the magic of Malawi WITH CENTRAL AFRICAN WILDERNESS SAFARIS
BY SARAH KINGDOM
FOR OVER 30 YEARS, CENTRAL AFRICAN WILDERNESS SAFARIS (CAWS) HAS DELIVERED UNFORGETTABLE MALAWIAN SAFARIS. FOUNDED IN 1987 BY CHRIS AND PAM BADGER, CAWS TURNED THEIR LOVE FOR MALAWI’S WILDLIFE, LANDSCAPES, AND WELCOMING PEOPLE INTO A THRIVING FAMILY-RUN BUSINESS. WINNING THE BID TO MANAGE MVUU CAMP IN LIWONDE NATIONAL PARK IN 1993 MARKED A TURNING POINT, AND NOW, IN 2024, THEY’RE CELEBRATING THREE DECADES OF ADVENTURE, PASSION, AND CONNECTION AT MVUU.
Anew era for wildlife conservation in Malawi
Thanks to the efforts of African Parks earlier this year, wild dogs have made a triumphant return to Liwonde National Park. Once critically endangered across much of Africa, these iconic predators are now once again part of the park’s ecosystem. CAWS guests have been fortunate to spot these remarkable animals on guided game drives, with hopes that sightings will become more frequent
as the pack settles in.
Meanwhile, the Nyika Plateau, renowned for its vast montane grasslands, has seen a significant rise in leopard sightings. This resurgence is a direct result of the conservation work led by Peace Parks. Guests staying at Chelinda Lodge or Chelinda Camp have had the rare privilege of witnessing these majestic cats in their natural habitat, a true reflection of the success of ongoing conservation efforts.
Guest experiences that offer comfort, innovation and sustainability
Here are some of the exciting upgrades introduced in 2024:
• 100% solar-powered at Mvuu Camp and Lodge: as part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, Mvuu Camp and Lodge will now run entirely on solar power. This ensures guests can enjoy an eco-friendly stay while immersing themselves in the heart of Liwonde National Park.
• Starlink wi-fi for seamless connectivity: while guests at Mvuu can escape into nature, they also benefit from high-speed, reliable Starlink Wi-Fi. Staying connected to the outside world is now easier than ever, allowing visitors to share their wildlife experiences or keep in touch with family while enjoying the stunning wilderness around them.
• New safari vehicles for optimal wildlife viewing: to elevate your safari experience, CAWS has invested in four new, specially designed safari vehicles. These vehicles enhance both comfort and viewing opportunities, allowing guests to experience Malawi’s incredible wildlife up close.

urban
BEYOND THE SPRAWL
BY SIMON MARITZ
THE RANGE ROVER EVOQUE IS THE STYLISH, MODERN SUV THAT PERFECTLY DEALS WITH URBAN LIFE. BUT THIS VERSATILE COMPACT LUXURY CROSSOVER HAS SO MUCH MORE TO OFFER.
f there’s one thing I’ve learnt in my many years writing, driving and advertising cars, is that you never take a vehicle at face value.
Some of the most masculine vehicles I’ve driven, feel as fragile as an English Rugby Supporter. And some of the most stylish looking vehicles have the ability to surprise you with their resilience and go-anywhere attitude.
The Range Rover Evoque is the perfect example of a vehicle that looks like it would be more comfortable in an urban setting, but never disappoints when you take it out of its comfort zone.
I’ve been a fan of the Evoque since it was launched in 2011. To me it painted a picture of the future of Range Rover, and created an entirely new segment of subcompact luxury crossovers. With nearly 1 million units sold since launch, the Evoque is one of the Land Rover’s most successful models.
Now in its second generation, the Evoque takes the concept of reductive design to both the interior and exterior, creating clean uncluttered lines that add a Zen-like quality to the experience. As with all
Range Rover models, I always tell people to forget about what they have heard about this marque. Just spend some time with them, and you get to understand the idea behind their design. More than ever, this applies to the Evoque.
Take this comfortable, stylish crossover outside the city limits and it becomes a comfortable cruiser on the open roads and an enthusiastic 4x4 off-road. After all, this is ingrained with Land Rover DNA, so it knows its way around mud and gravel.
But it would be unfair to call the Evoque a Jack of all trades, because it truly is exceptional to live with everyday. It continuously surprises with its versatility and the way it takes urban life in its stride.
The Range Rover Evoque shows that you can create a vehicle that exudes charisma, style and modern luxury, but has everyday usability, rugged capability and resilience. It’s one of the few vehicles I have driven that genuinely seems to adapt to your lifestyle, whether you are hitting the city streets or the coastal B-roads.
In rugby terms, the Evoque would be the perfect compact utility-back. Adept at playing in all positions, but never disappointing wherever he plays on the field.
The Range Rover Evoque is available from Land Rover Constantiaberg starting from R1 337 080 for the D200 Dynamic SE.
A short-term stay turned home
NIZAR BIRCH’S
14-YEAR LONDON
Name: Nizar Birch
Place of birth: Cape Town
Occupation: Office Manager City where you stay now: London
Duration: 14 Years
HE WENT TO LONDON FOR WHAT WAS MEANT TO BE A SIX-MONTH WORK STINT BEFORE RETURNING TO CAPE TOWN. BUT 14 YEARS LATER, NIZAR BIRCH IS STILL THRIVING IN THE HEART OF THE UK’S BUSTLING CAPITAL.
Why did you move to this city?
I originally came over on a two-year working holiday visa, which allowed me to work for six months of the year. The rest of the year was a “holiday,” during which I was not permitted to work. After two years, I had the option to either return to South Africa or apply for UK residency. I chose the latter and am now a UK citizen.
How did you prepare emotionally for the big move?
At first, it didn’t feel like a big move since I had no intention of staying long-term. But plans changed, and here I am, 14 years later.
What do you love about the people and the culture?
I love the open-mindedness of everyone here. London is one of the most culturally diverse cities, and it’s refreshing to experience such a wide variety of people and ideas.
Is it still an adjustment for you?
Not anymore – I’m fully accustomed to life here now.
What do you find challenging in this city?
The sheer number of people can be overwhelming at times, and I’ve had to slow down my accent to make sure people understand me clearly.
When you talk about SA, what do you tell people?
I always say everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime, as SA is not as bad as people make it out to be.
If a family member or friend is on their way to you right now, what South African products would you like them to bring?
A seafood platter from Ocean Basket would be perfect! IB
6 flight booking tips TO MINIMISE TRAVEL DISRUPTIONS
FEW THINGS DAMPEN TRAVEL PLANS LIKE A DELAYED OR CANCELLED FLIGHT. WHILE SOME TRAVEL HICCUPS ARE UNAVOIDABLE, SMART PLANNING CAN HELP REDUCE THE RISK OF DISRUPTION AND MINIMISE YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING STUCK AT THE AIRPORT. WE ASKED LYNETTE MACHIRI, CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE LEADER AT FLIGHT CENTRE SA, FOR SOME TIPS.
1
Don’t book the last flight of the day
If possible, avoid booking the last flight of the day. While late-night flights may seem convenient after a long day of sightseeing, they leave less margin for error. If a flight is delayed or canceled after hours, you’ll have fewer options to rebook the same day. Earlier flights provide more flexibility in case something goes wrong, with plenty of connections and alternative flights available throughout the day.
2 Direct is best
While often pricier, non-stop flights should always be your first choice if you’re aiming to reduce risk. Transit points increase the chance of something going wrong. Layovers open the door to delayed connecting flights or even misplaced luggage. When possible, pay a bit more upfront for a direct connection – you might just thank yourself later.
3 Research your route and airline
Some routes and airlines consistently perform better than others for ontime arrivals. Knowing your airline’s on-time performance record can be a game changer. Some airlines have a better track record with punctuality than others.
4 Book
for off-peak
Flight delays are more likely during peak travel times. Avoid major holidays, or school holidays when airports are stretched to full capacity and more prone to back-ups. While many travellers might not have the flexibility to skip busy seasons, booking flights outside rush-hour windows –typically the late afternoons – can help you avoid the worst delays.
5Insurance is your best friend
Even the best-laid plans can hit a snag. That’s where travel insurance comes in. If you haven’t invested in decent coverage, you could be left in the lurch when you least expect it. Be sure your travel insurance covers you for unexpected delays or cancellations. Although travel insurance can’t prevent a disruption, it can at least cushion the financial blow.
6
Timing is key when booking flights
There’s a sweet spot. Booking too far in advance may leave you overpaying while waiting until the last-minute puts you at the mercy of higher prices and limited choices. Get your domestic flights booked around six months ahead and international flights up to 12 months if possible. Planning early also allows you to get your preferred seating (you may have to pay extra for this, depending on your chosen seat or airline) – which, for some, could mean getting closer to the front of the plane for a quicker exit and smoother transit.
Although no travel plan is guaranteed to run perfectly, with the right know-how and some preparation, you can avoid many potential pitfalls and give yourself the best chance for a seamless journey. IB
Mauritius SETS ITS SIGHTS ON GREEN TOURISM
BY SARAH KINGDOM
WITH OVER 160KM OF TALCUM-POWDER SAND BEACHES AND TURQUOISE LAGOONS, THE ISLAND OF MAURITIUS IS PROTECTED ON ALL SIDES BY AN ENCIRCLING CORAL REEF. MAURITIUS IS INCREASINGLY FOCUSING ON ECOTOURISM, AND TOGETHER WITH SEVERAL FORWARD-THINKING OPERATORS, THE ISLAND HAS ITS EYE ON BECOMING A WORLD LEADER IN GREEN TOURISM.
When you live on a small island in the Indian Ocean, you’re sensitive to every tiny environmental change that happens around you. And when one of your most famous tourist attractions is, in fact, extinct, you know how important it is to protect that environment. It might be too late for the Dodo, but many other birds and ‘creatures’ in
Mauritius have thankfully been saved by human intervention in the last few decades. As awareness grows of the importance of maintaining the island’s ecosystem, for its flora, and fauna, Mauritius is working hard towards its goal of conservation and sustainable tourism. It is this side of Mauritius that I have come to experience.
Beyond the sunbathing tourists and bustling
beaches, Mauritius is a biodiversity hotspot, home to remarkable wildlife and plants. Recognised by the IUCN as a “Centre of Plant Diversity,” the island’s exceptional endemism is due to its unique location, age, isolation, and diverse landscape. Remarkably, 39% of its plants, 80% of its non-marine birds, 80% of reptiles, and 40% of bat species are endemic. The island’s forests support 691 species of indigenous flowering plants, 52 native vertebrates and 30 species of land birds. Mauritius’ marine environment is just as impressive, covering 16,840 km² of the territorial sea, with 786 species of fish, 17 species of marine mammals and two species of marine turtles.
Conservation efforts in action
Like most of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius has seen a sharp decrease in its coral reef due to climate change and aggressive fishing methods. Taking some time out from lazing by the pool, I spent two days with NGO Eco Sud https:// ecosud.mu/, getting some hands-on experience with the work done to safeguard the future of the island’s marine environment. I spent one day in Blue Bay, in the south-east of the island, looking for, monitoring, identifying, and counting endangered sea turtles. The following day I participated in their coral farming project, which aims to grow corals to replenish damaged areas of the island’s reefs.
The following day, I took a guided tour of the small, rocky wildlife sanctuary of Île aux Aigrettes. Resident scientists gave a series of talks and led walks around the islet, introducing me to some of its more endangered inhabitants, including the pink pigeon, which, along with the Mauritius kestrel, echo parakeet, and Mauritius skink, has been brought back from the brink of extinction. I also saw the rare Olive White-eye and the brightly coloured Mauritian Fody, as well as numerous vibrant Mauritian Day Geckos. The island’s extensive nursery for indigenous and native plants was a highlight. The passion of the scientists was contagious, and by the end of the day, I left with a deep appreciation for the dedication involved in conservation, habitat restoration and species preservation.
Still on the trail of conservation efforts, I was invited to spend a couple of days at Vallée de Ferney https://ferney.mu/, a 200-hectare forest and wildlife reserve, established in 2006, as a conservation trust, in partnership with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, and see their impressive plant and animal restoration project. With less than 2% of the indigenous forest ecosystems of Mauritius remaining, Vallée de Ferney is one of the last nature preserves on the island and a biodiversity sanctuary where some of the rarest plant and animal species on the island are found. Surveys of the valley have led to the
discovery of several plant species that were either new to science or were thought to have been extinct. Most exciting of all has been the discovery of a specimen of the critically endangered Bois Clou (subsequently a handful more of which have been found in the valley). The valley is also home to the Mauritian Kestrel, once one of the most endangered birds in the world, and one that has been brought back from the brink of extinction by the concerted efforts of conservationists and scientists.
Some remarkable statistics demonstrate the impact the Ferney team has achieved. Ten hectares of the forest have been hand-weeded to remove alien invasive plants and over 30 000 endemic trees have been planted in their place. There is a nursery with a stock of over 11 000 native plants, several of which are rare or critically endangered. In 2020 seven specimens of another rare tree, Le Manglier Vert, were also discovered and are now being protected. Plants are not the only focus at Ferney though, the team here has released 150 endemic birds into the valley, including 70 endangered Echo Parakeets, 30
Pink Pigeons (who have bred successfully) and 30 Mauritian Fly Catchers. There are also 14 or 15 pairs of Mauritian kestrels in the reserve.
Sustainable Tourism at Lagoon Attitude
Of course, no trip to Mauritius would be complete without a trip to the beach, that is what the island is best known for after all! But even with beach travel, more and more travellers are now looking for sustainable development and responsible tourism. In the north of the island, Lagoon Attitude https://hotels-attitude.com, a 182-roomed hotel that overlooks one of the largest lagoons in Mauritius, has stepped up to answer these needs. Right on the beach, and without doing away with all the glamour of a tropical beachside resort, Lagoon Attitude has introduced a swathe of innovations that means even the most ecominded guest can be happy.
Removing all single-use plastics from the resort, the hotel estimates they have eliminated 690,000 items of plastic litter per annum. They have also introduced eco-workshops in upcycling ocean waste and a “blue net bag” collection programme to encourage guests to collect even tiny pieces of litter from the ocean. Switching cleaning products used on their boats to eco-friendly products prevents further reef degradation, as does providing guests with 100% natural, non-polluting,
locally made sunscreen. Providing reusable water bottles, solar water heating, and much more, the hotel has embraced the idea of green tourism. There’s also a Marine Discovery Centre within the hotel grounds, which is a base for marine research, a coral reef monitoring programme, and

a coastal mangrove rehabilitation project.

Where in the World – An Indian Ocean Island nation, Mauritius is 65km long and 45km wide. Its land area covers 1,864.8km² and is surrounded by more than 150km of white sandy beaches and lagoons, which are protected from the open sea by the world’s third-largest coral reef that encircles the island.
Know Before You Go – Mauritius is a biologically unique paradise, part of the Madagascar and Indian Ocean Islands biodiversity hotspot. The island has a high level of endemism, with many of its plants and animals found nowhere else in the world.

THE IMPACT OF A well-designed garden
A GARDEN IS THE HEART OF ANY PROPERTY. AS A LANDSCAPING COMPANY, OUR PASSION FOR THRIVING, VIBRANT HAVENS FULL OF FLOURISHING FLORA MIGHT MAKE US A BIT BIASED. HOWEVER, THE REALITY IS THAT A WELL-DESIGNED GARDEN CAN SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE YOUR PROPERTY’S VALUE WHILE ENRICHING YOUR LIFESTYLE. THIS INTANGIBLE BENEFIT IS INVALUABLE AND SHOULD NOT BE OVERLOOKED.
Your garden is the first and last feature visitors notice. For homeowners, it becomes the space where cherished memories are made.
When considering a garden, it’s easy to focus solely on the plants. While they are indeed essential ¬ to add colour, softness, movement, and fragrance, plants also provide a bountiful harvest, depending on what you choose to grow. However, simply planting without creating userfriendly spaces limits your garden’s full potential. Incorporating a designer outdoor space can transform your garden from a visual delight into an immersive experience.
A new perspective on garden spaces
Many believe that if a home has a patio, additional outdoor features aren’t necessary. But being out in the garden, away from the house, creates a distinctly different atmosphere. Similarly, you don’t need a large garden to have an inviting, practical outdoor space. Even small, overlooked corners can be transformed, enhancing how you use and enjoy your garden.
This particular garden demonstrates how a small area can become a bold, beautiful, and
practical feature, perfect for both relaxation and entertainment.
Design elements and inspiration
Our design uses minimal ground space but makes a big statement. The garden revolves around the four basic elements: earth, fire, water, and wind.
1. Earth is represented by the garden’s planting and the bag-washed finish we used instead of plaster. We selected a mix of grasses and succulents to create an attractive, hardy, water-wise garden that’s easy to maintain. The bag-washed walls expose the underlying brickwork, offering a more organic look than perfectly plastered walls. This finish creates a wonderful texture that contrasts with the hard, flat paving and looks fantastic at night when the lighting highlights the wall’s imperfections.
2. Fire is a lively, warming element that creates a wonderful atmosphere in a garden or entertainment space. The focus of this space is the fire, a central feature. We used a FireBlades fire pit as a design element that adds detail to the space. This stylish, brazierstyle fire pit allows viewing the fire
1. from all sides, and its open design facilitates the movement of warm air well beyond the immediate area.
2. Water provides a calming, relaxing soundtrack to any space. We integrated the fire pit with a water feature, creating an interesting and unique focal point at the garden’s centre. The water gently spills over the edges of the fire pit into a pond hidden beneath the gravel area, making it a childfriendly feature, as no standing water could pose a hazard to curious youngsters.
3. Wind (or air) is represented by our pergola design, which is open to the elements and allows a breeze to flow through the space. While it doesn’t protect from the sun or rain, it creates a cosy, inviting atmosphere. The pergola adds an X-factor to the way you experience the patio area.
Finishing touches
The patio area includes a constructed bench towards the back and some decorative steelwork to continue the theme of a modern, linear design. It is tiled using concrete flagstone pavers and bullnose tiles to finish off the edges. The patio space behind the fire pit is perfectly suitable for housing a small dining area.
This is a dynamic space which can be configured in several ways. If the fire pit is the element that is in demand, additional chairs around the gravelled area in front of the fire pit can facilitate more guests. Alternatively, if you are using the space for outdoor dining, a table, and chairs can be placed on the patio area and the fire pit would still provide the space with a much sought-after atmosphere and mood lighting.
It should be noted that the gravelled area could also be replaced with beach sand. This would create an even more relaxed atmosphere as you could comfortably lie down or squeeze the sand between your toes while enjoying the flickering fire.
As designers, our imagination and creativity know no bounds. Every new project ignites our excitement and drive to push boundaries. However, it’s often the budget that sets the limits. With a larger space and a more generous budget, we could transform the gravelled areas into a stunning swimming pool, connecting a water feature that flows from the fire pit into the pool, creating a breathtaking design. ELEVATE YOUR MOOD AT HOME WITH THE
dopamine decor trend
WITH THE REPO RATE FINALLY TURNING A CORNER AND LOAD SHEDDING PAUSED IT’S TIME TO FEEL CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE YEAR AHEAD. IF A HOME REVAMP IS ON YOUR MIND, YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER THE LATEST DOPAMINE DECOR TREND THAT HAS BECOME THE NEW DARLING OF INTERIOR DESIGN.
This trend is a global hit as dopamine decor aims to evoke feelings of positivity, happiness, and well-being by incorporating elements that trigger the release of dopamine – a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, says Yael Geffen, CEO of Lew Geffen
Sotheby’s International Realty.
“It’s a response to the uncertain and often stressful world we live in with people increasingly seeking spaces that provide comfort, joy, and a mental escape, and what better way than through their home decor?
“This style is about creating spaces that make you smile, sparking joy through bright colours, playful patterns and a blend of personal mementos. Just as dopamine floods the brain with positive feelings, dopamine decor aims to create an environment where positive emotions thrive.
“Inspired by colour psychology, dopamine decor encourages bold hues that evoke energy and positivity – think bright yellows, energising oranges, rich greens and dynamic blues. It’s a design approach that’s unafraid of a little chaos. Instead of looking for perfectly matched items, dopamine decor invites a curated clash of textures, patterns, and colours that feel both spontaneous and intentional.”
Key elements of dopamine decor
Dopamine decor is a layered approach to design that emphasises several elements:
• Vibrant colours: bright, happy colours like fuchsia, teal, mustard yellow and cobalt blue are foundational. Instead of limiting these to accent pieces, dopamine decor embraces larger statements like a painted wall, colourful sofas, or vibrant rugs.
• Playful patterns: mixing patterns is key in dopamine decor. Florals, stripes, geometric shapes and abstract prints come together in a quirky yet cohesive way. This can be seen in throw pillows, wallpaper and art pieces.
• Sentimental items: beyond colour and pattern, personal mementos make the style truly yours. Displaying items that bring personal joy, such as a vintage record player, travel souvenirs, or framed family photos, gives the space a warm, nostalgic feel.
• Unique textures: layers of different textures, from velvet couches to wool throws and textured wallpaper, add visual interest and make a space feel dynamic and multidimensional.
How to incorporate dopamine decor in your home
“Integrating dopamine decor into your space doesn’t mean you need to do a complete overhaul,” says Geffen. “The style is flexible and can be adapted in small ways or sweeping changes, depending on how bold you want to go.”
Start small with colourful accents
If you’re hesitant to go all-in, start with small accents like throw pillows, blankets, or rugs in bold colours. This allows you to experiment with
the dopamine decor vibe without making a major commitment.
Create a feature wall
Choose a colour that sparks joy for you – whether that’s a rich teal, a sunny orange, or a cheerful
pink – and use it to cover one wall in a room. Alternatively, you could experiment with a bold patterned wallpaper to add energy to the space. Complement it with framed art that echoes similar colours or add a few personal photos for a touch of nostalgia.
Mix and match patterns
Florals paired with polka dots, or stripes against abstract designs, create a fun, eclectic vibe. Try mixing patterned throw pillows on your couch or layering different styles of rugs to give your room
depth and texture. The trick is to stick to patterns that share a common colour palette to avoid overwhelming the space.
Display personal items and sentimental decor
From family heirlooms to travel souvenirs, decorating with personal items can make your space feel uniquely yours. Incorporate a favourite piece of furniture, a treasured collection, or framed memories from special moments in your life.
Play with unique furniture and lighting
Bold furniture pieces, like a vibrant velvet sofa or a patterned armchair, make striking focal points in a room. Dopamine decor encourages creativity, so explore playful shapes, bold fabrics and unconventional styles. Lighting is also essential – incorporate statement pieces like colourful lamps, neon lights, or even disco balls to bring a whimsical touch to the space.
Layer in plants for a natural boost
Plants can serve as a natural, grounding element among all the colours and patterns. Opt for vibrant pots or hanging planters to add a creative touch to your greenery. Plants also enhance the energy of a room, promoting relaxation and
positive vibes.
“Dopamine decor is about infusing your space with what makes you feel joyful and at home. It’s a style that encourages personalisation and emotional connection, blending colour and comfort with nostalgia and selfexpression.
“As you start experimenting, remember that there are no strict rules in dopamine decor – just an emphasis on creating a space that feels happy and authentic to you. Whether you choose to fully embrace the trend or add touches here and there, dopamine decor offers a way to make your home a place of warmth, joy and endless inspiration,” Geffen adds. IB

• salt and ground black pepper
• olive oil
For the Asian dressing
• 2 tablespoons soy sauce
• 1 tablespoon brown rice vinegar
• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
• 1 tablespoon finely grated fresh ginger
• ½ clove garlic, finely chopped
For the coleslaw
• 1/3 white cabbage, thinly sliced on a mandolin
• 1 cucumber, thinly sliced on a mandolin
• 2 spring onions, thinly sliced
For the Miso Soy Glaze
• 1 tablespoon miso paste
• 2 tablespoons Maggi Aromé AllPurpose seasoning or Worcestershire sauce
• ¼ cup soy sauce
• 2 tablespoons honey
• 1 tablespoon brown rice vinegar
• 1 small wedge blue cheese (about 80g)
For the caramelised apple
• Knob of butter
• 2 apples, cored and cut into thick slices
• honey for drizzling
METHOD
Preparing the dressing
1. In a screw-top jar, combine all the dressing ingredients. Shake until well combined and season to taste.
Preparing the coleslaw
1. Combine the ingredients in a bowl. Drizzle with the dressing and toss to combine.
Preparing the glaze
1. Combine all the ingredients (except the blue cheese) in a bowl. Transfer half of the mixture to a separate bowl to use for basting.
2. Crumble the blue cheese and mix with the remaining glaze.
Preparing the caramelised apple
1. Prepare medium coals.
2. Heat the butter in a small pan over the coals and toss the apples in the
butter until well coated. Cook the apples, drizzling with honey, until dark golden and caramelised.
Cooking the pork
1. Prepare medium-hot coals.
2. Drizzle the pork cutlets with olive oil, season to taste and grill, turning occasionally and brushing with the reserved glaze, until browned and just cooked through (about 6–7 minutes).
3. Spread the glaze with the blue cheese in it over the chops, cover with the braai lid (or a deep roasting pan) and cook for 1–2 minutes to let the cheese melt.

Cardamom panna cotta with roasted peaches
By Reuben Riffel
INGREDIENTS
• 300ml full-cream milk
• 300ml whipping cream
• 3 cardamom seeds, crushed
• 1/3 cup castor sugar
• 4 gelatine leaves
For macerated nectarines
• 3–4 nectarines, diced
• 1 tablespoon castor sugar
• small handful mint leaves, finely shredded
For caramelised nectarines
• Large knob of butter
• 2 tablespoons brown sugar
• 3–4 nectarines, halved
For almond brittle
• ½ packet roasted almonds
• 4 tablespoons sugar
METHOD
Preparing the panna cotta
1. Heat the milk, cream, cardamom and sugar in a heavy-based pan. Bring to the boil, remove from the heat, and set aside for 30 minutes to infuse.
2. Soak gelatine leaves in 2 cups of cold water for about 5 minutes until soft.
3. Reheat the milk and cream mixture until almost boiling. Squeeze excess water from the gelatine leaves and add to the pan. Stir until the gelatine has dissolved.
4. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve into a bowl. Place over a bowl of ice to cool rapidly. Pour into six small serving glasses or bowls.
5. Chill in the fridge for 3 hours or until set.
Preparing the nectarines
1. Place the diced nectarine, sugar and mint in a bowl and set aside to macerate for at least an hour. A sugar syrup should form.
2. To caramelise the nectarines instead of macerating, heat butter in a cast-iron pan over medium coals. Add sugar and heat until bubbling. Place nectarines cut side down in the pan and cook until dark golden and caramelised.
Making the almond brittle
1. Heat the almonds and sugar together in a pan on medium-high heat until the sugar melts, turns golden and coats the nuts in caramel.
2. Tip the mixture onto baking paper and leave to cool.
Assembling the dessert
1. Smash the brittle into smaller pieces using a rolling pin or pestle and mortar.
2. Spoon a generous helping of nectarines on top of each panna cotta and sprinkle with some brittle.

Fierce, Fun + Fab
Navigating the age gap
Dear Self,
Remember when you decided to test the limits of your dating app by swiping on someone 20 years older? Swipe, swipe, swipe; bingo! A match with a guy who’s practically from a different era. What was I thinking? But hey, YOLO, right?
Curiosity got the best of me. I wanted to see what dating someone twice my age would be like, but I didn’t expect it to feel like dating my own dad. Our first date was all respectful shyness, leaving me wondering if he was as unsure as I was. By the second meetup, it was like I’d accidentally signed up for a master class in “Parenting 101.”
One evening, Mike and I clashed over something as trivial as table manners; yes, seriously. It was a mini-drama of epic proportions whether it was acceptable for a lady to grab the wine bottle and top up everyone’s glasses, and it made me realise how far apart our worlds were. After that, we both hit pause and never reached out again.
Dating someone with a 20year age gap is like trying to sync a rotary phone with a smartphone. Imagine navigating a relationship where one partner remembers when “retro” meant neon leg warmers and the other thinks “retro” is vintage 2010s fashion.
Sometimes, the gap can be so wide that it feels like you’re walking on eggshells or secondguessing every sentence. Looking back, this was like my own version of “curiosity killed the cat”; except in this case, it was more like “curiosity made me date my dad.”
So, what’s the big takeaway? Exploring relationships with a significant age gap can be intriguing, but it’s important to recognise how different life experiences and perspectives can impact compatibility.
Until the next swipe, Milou Staub
