Editor’s Note

IT’S OKAY TO BELIEVE IN

Valentine’s Day

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR WHERE WE AS VALENTINE’S DAY BELIEVERS ARE SUBJECTED TO “IT’S A MONEY-MAKING CAMPAIGN” AND “VALENTINES DAY IS ABOUT RECEIVING GIFTS TO PROVE OUR LOVE”. My take on this is simple. When you buy a car, you don’t just drive it for years without it being serviced. And that for me, is the same with a relationship. Whether its love between a couple or friends and family, it needs to be maintained. And you maintain it by showing lovely gestures that show you still care about the person. If you are in a strong relationship, Valentine’s Day won’t affect it much. But when we are chasing money, career and success, a day like this is necessary to ignite the passion and butterflies you felt when you first met the person. So, go out and plan the most romantic day of your life. In this issue, our main feature is about a billionaire and his unbreakable love for his mother. Zunaid was

poor but rose above the critics and became a wealthy businessman. We also asked a few celebrities what love means to them, and their answers are inspirational. Our “Living Abroad” feature is about the city of love – Paris and how a South African is living his best life there. On a more sombre note, it is a year ago this month when hip-hop sensation AKA was brutally shot dead outside a Durban restaurant. We remember him and celebrate in the love his fans had for him and his music. We also feature a topic that causes much debate: Is it wise to start a relationship at the office? Read about a couple that met at work and years later, their love is still stronger than the office gossip. Enjoy.

THIS MONTH’S BURNING QUESTION… Can you only taste certain things on certain parts of your tongue?

ANSWER: According to the myth, different parts of your tongue are for different types of tastes. The back of your tongue detects bitterness, the front takes in sweetness, and so on. This is incorrect! Taste receptors are all over your tongue, and they all pick up all kinds of tastes. It’s true that some taste buds are more receptive to certain kinds of tastes than others, but the difference is slight, according to the University of Florida Centre for Smell and Taste, and the locations of those taste buds aren’t in accordance with the “tongue map”.

AIRPORT SECURITY DRAMA

MISSED AN AIR CRASH

In 2019, my sister and I returned from Thailand, but our flight was delayed. On our way back, as we descended just before landing in Addis Ababa, our pilot informed us that he was searching for a plane that had gone off the radar. On landing, chaos ensued at the airport. We were transported to a hotel where we turned on the TV to discover that the missing plane was an Ethiopian airline that had crashed. We were stranded at the hotel for 2 to 3 hours, not able to let our family know we were safe.

On arrival at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France, my husband Kameel and I were promptly pulled aside by customs who had spotted a halffull water bottle on the scanner. The customs officer proceeded to check the bag when suddenly his whole demeanour changed! He shook his head saying “No, no, no!” Eyes as wide as saucers, I looked over at my husband whose soul had left his body. He then whips out my husband’s Manchester United FC cap from the bag waving it around and shouting “no, no, only PSG, PSG (Paris Saint-Germain football club)”! We all had a good laugh as the offending cap went back into the bag, and my husband’s body and soul reunited, and we hurried off! Natasha Rajcomar, Cape Town

Eventually, we were escorted back to take the last flight back from Addis Ababa before all flights were grounded. Afterward, we learned that if our flight wasn’t delayed, we would’ve possibly been on the plane that crashed as it came from Johannesburg. Santoni Engelbrecht, Johannesburg

GANSBAAI’S DODGY DOCTOR

We were on a breakaway at a lodge in a nature reserve in Gansbaai (Western Cape) when I tripped and fell on steps. I called reception and was recommended a local (preferred) doctor. In heavy pain, we drove to the doctor. The doctor was completely inebriated. He gave me a bag of pills and sent me back to the hotel. The next morning, the pain

became worse, and I went to the local hospital. Staff needed a doctor’s letter which they eventually got from the doctor I had seen earlier. After an X-ray, it showed I was perfectly fine. When I checked the results myself, I saw the doctor wrote for them to x-ray my shin and not my foot. After more tests, we discovered that I had broken my foot for which I underwent surgery. I received no support from the lodge. Christian Smith, Cape Town

COSTLY BIRTHDAY IN AUSTRALIA

My husband, Vivian, and I visited my brother in Australia for his birthday. Then Covid-19 hit the world. The government was trying to stop people from coming into the country. Emirates notified us our flights had been cancelled. I called our travel agent and, R40 000 later, they managed to get us a flight back to SA. We arrived in Johannesburg to get a connecting flight back to Cape Town, only to find the whole domestic terminal was shut. I burst out crying. Racing against time as our national roads closed at 12 that night, we decided to rent a car and drive. At the rental, we were told we could only rent a car for 21 days. We paid R10 000 and off we went. On the road home, we went through three army roadblocks but were not stopped. Cathy Oosterwyk, Cape Town

fter two months of back-and-forth, I finally got to sit down with one of South Africa’s most successful businessmen, billionaire Zunaid Moti. As I park my car, I am greeted by a security officer who directs me to another security officer, and I am signed in. Our meeting is at Zunaid’s newly renovated FuturExotics Lifestyle Emporium in Sandton, home to sophisticated luxury brands and cars. Zunaid walks into the boardroom with a big smile, dressed in shorts, flops, and a T-shirt. No airs and graces for him. No ego. Our conversation immediately leads to how he maintains being so successful. And as he finishes, I point out he needed to have started somewhere. “Oh yes. We were very poor when I grew up. My mom (Rukshana), sister, and I lived in a backroom on someone’s property,” he explains. Home was Mokopane in Limpopo, and the room was a tiny 45m2 structure. When Zunaid was about 11, his mother developed diabetes and had to take chronic medication daily. “My father didn’t live with us. I used to walk my mom to work early in the morning and then run to school. Then after school, I fetched her at work. She worked at a hospital outside Potgietersrus (Mokopane). She didn’t have the right medication, so I needed to keep an eye on her,” he tells me. In the afternoons, after making sure mom was safe at home, he would then go to a nearby scrapyard to work and earned about R1 a day. Later in the day, mom would prepare a meal while Zunaid and his sister would transform the lounge into a bedroom using materials generally sold for curtains.

But there were only 13 children in the class. I aimed to score over 90% for all my subjects. I did this for my mother, despite our circumstances, I could still make her proud,” he says. At a school awards ceremony where Zunaid received his award for top achiever, the principal handed him the microphone after handing over his certificate.

“During the day, we had a lounge and at night, it was a bedroom for us. Yes, we were poor, but we had a roof over our heads,” he says.

“I said, ‘Hello, my name is Zunaid’ and everyone started laughing. I thanked my mother and then the kids started talking. The principal tried to take the mic away, but I ran away from the stage, still talking. Someone grabbed the mic from me, and I started to cry.

don’t know your value. Something is wrong with them, not you, my son. For now, forgive those people, and let’s go home’.” Zunaid remembers another pivotal moment in his school when his English teacher asked him to write an assignment on their future careers.

Zunaid’s favourite things… You will be 50 years old soon. What do you want for your birthday? I am a simple guy. Get me blades. I love to shave. And cigars.

“I handed in an empty paper and the teacher gave me a zero. When asked why I did that, I said that one day I would be a millionaire and my secretary would write my assignments for me.”

When I invite you over to my house for dinner, what must I cook for you? Anything. I am not a fussy guy. My wife is a horrible cook by the way. She tried and then burnt herself.

He was not wrong and predicted his future pretty well. After primary school, he went to St Albans College in Pretoria and was enrolled as one of the first non-whites to attend it.

I hope she recovers. What about you? What do you cook? I love to cook breakfast.

Today, Zunaid has handed his business over to his son, Makeel (as Chairman), and National Treasury’s former Director General, Dondo Mogajane. He has also started a campaign to give money to innovative start-up companies in South Africa, known as MotiMoves. Poverty has shaped Zunaid Moti into an innovative and creative soul with a deep understanding of business. Rukshana sadly passed away, but one thing is certain – her wisdom lives on through her son. Do you still have goals left? Yes. I want to create the ability to have the power to not be affected by an outcome. Lastly, what advice would you give someone wanting to be successful? Your biggest enemy is fear. It will hold you back. Love your mind, your body, and your soul, and accept who you are. If you make business decisions out of complete and total love for what you are doing, you will be successful. Whatever decision you make, make it out of love.

AKA

EXCLUSIVE

ONE YEAR LATER BY TEMO MPODI

IT WAS FOUR DAYS BEFORE VALENTINE’S DAY LAST YEAR WHEN WE HEARD THE MOST UNEXPECTED AND EXCRUCIATING NEWS THAT SHOCKED NOT ONLY THE HIP-HOP WORLD OF SOUTH AFRICA BUT ORDINARY FOLK AS WELL. SINGER AND SONGWRITER AKA, BORN KIERNAN JARRYD FORBES, WAS SHOT DEAD.

Y

ou didn’t have to be following his career to be touched by his cruel passing. AKA died a few weeks before the release of his last album “Mass Country”.

Pic Credit: www.sowetanlive.co.za

You would think his death put a halt to his music and other projects, but No! Although no arrests have been made yet, the singer’s legacy lives on. AKA won his first international award on American ground; AFRIMMA seven months after his passing. We see longevity in what he built, past his death, and as he would hashtag on his posts, #SuperMegaForever. Five songs from his last album went gold and platinum last year, and we know it will be an unending chain of wins. When accepting the ‘Global Vision Award’, his parents said, ‘’This is a bittersweet moment for us as a family. Kiernan lived for music and dedicated himself to creating a legacy that has transcended his time with us.” His girlfriend Nadia Nakai continues to make sure that Kiernan is remembered. This is evident in her promotion of AKA’s projects along with his family, and how she loves AKA. B

LYNN FORBES

MISSING AKA HAS BECOME PART OF MY EVERYDAY LIFE IT IS SAID PARENTS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO OUTLIVE THEIR CHILDREN. BUT FOR LYNN FORBES (55), THIS BECAME A SAD REALITY WHEN ON 10 FEBRUARY 2023, HER SON, KIERNAN FORBES, BETTER KNOWN AS HIPHOP STAR AKA, WAS FATALLY SHOT IN A DURBAN RESTAURANT. IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH GAVIN PRINS, SHE SAYS WHILE SHE IS NOT PLANNING ANYTHING TO COMMEMORATE HIM, EVERY MORNING FEELS LIKE THAT PAINFUL DAY HE DIED.

N

othing could have prepared her for the day she lost her son. Mornings are, as she tells us, painful.

“Waking up every morning marks a new day since the tragic death of my son. The morning of 10 February will just be another morning like every other painful morning has been since he died. I am not planning anything specific to commemorate him. Like I have been doing every day for the last year, I will do what

ENTERTAINMENT

flows naturally and remember him like I do every day.” The fact that he is not here and never will be again, is what Lynn will miss most. “It’s not one thing it’s everything – from the way he walked, the way he talked, his laughter, his humour, his hug, his phone calls and watching him be a dad to Kairo. The list is endless. Every little thing that made him who he is; that is what I miss most.”

Hit after hit

AKA was a rapper, record producer, and businessman. Born in Cape Town and raised in Johannesburg, AKA gained recognition after releasing his single “Victory Lap” from his debut studio album, Altar Ego (2011). And what followed, was hit after hit. His musical talent, Lynn says, was his father, Tony’s influence. “He grew up with his dad playing different genres of music, so he was exposed to music from a young age.” He was one of the most popular South African musicians of his era and the greatest selling South African hip hop artist of all-time. While fans adored his music and performances, his mother says: “He was also a human being with a family and a daughter. And sometimes people forget that.”

Missing him is part of who she is now

His daughter Kairo, who he had with DJ Zinhle, talks about her dad all the time. “She remembers the things they did together, what he liked and didn’t like, what he would say and do. She talks about what she wants to do on his upcoming birthday, as an example. I always respond or have a conversation with her for as long as she needs to. I let her know that he is always with her.” Missing him, Lynn says, is part of who she is now. “Losing him has altered my being. I’m learning to live with the grief and permanent void and all I have are the memories of him. I feel all the emotions and I ride the waves of grief as they come. There is no one thing that I do, I feel my way through the moments.”

Lynn Forbes with AKA and his daughter, Kairo

Lynn thanks everyone who has held a space for AKA and her family. “If you are reading this, please know that we appreciate you and that your continued love and support does not go unnoticed.” IB February 2024 / INBOUNDSA 23

TRAVEL WITH

BRYONI GOVENDER EL SALVADOR, CENTRAL AMERICA The last country I travelled to was… El Salvador in Central America when I represented South Africa at the 72nd Miss Universe.

What I loved about it was ... the friendliness and welcoming spirit. It was a truly wonderful experience. I did not know much about the country before visiting.

The people were... so kind, which reminded me of South Africans who are so similar in this way.

What I found challenging was... the language barrier. The predominantly spoken language in El Salvador is Spanish, which made communication challenging for me. My next destination is... wherever destiny takes me.

I do not travel without: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Aunty Betty – your iconic ‘agony aunt’ One good thing that came out of 2023, is Aunty Betty – a fictitious character he built that started on social media and has now turned into a oneman-show. “I got to travel with my first-ever one man show, Aunty Betty,” he says.

Get a domain + 2 months free on any of our annual plans.

Actor, Director and Producer Oscar Peterson, whom Dean considers a mentor and friend, helped him develop the character for the stage and also co-wrote his one-man show. Aunty Betty, he says, is over talkative and selfabsorbed and always ready to give advice, whether wanted or unwanted. “She always gets things wrong, but with confidence. Everyone’s mother is in Aunty Betty. And I hear this from fans.” Dean says Aunty Betty was not created in the vision of one specific person. “Aunty Betty is the culmination of a few of my aunts, and even uncles, back in Malmesbury.” His plan for 2024 is to take Aunty Betty to Namibia for shows and the character has already been booked for a few festivals in South Africa. For now, Dean focuses on his role in Suidooster but will keep an eye out for when Mrs Right comes along. IB

5 MINUTES WITH STANDUP COMEDIAN

W

hat do you do when the audience does not laugh at your jokes?

When I am doing theatre runs, the audience have already made the choice to buy the ticket, leave their homes and spend time in my company. So, the work is already partly done. Where it might get tricky is when I am performing in a comedy club, or at a corporate venue and they don’t know me. I have to use the first 5 or 6 minutes of my set persuading them that they are in good hands and will be entertained.

How do you prepare your jokes jokes or stories?

I have a notes page on my phone and a little notebook that I scribble in. That is used and abused throughout the year.

What has been your biggest moment on stage?

Receiving the prestigious Comics Choice Hall of Fame award in 2023; hosting the Leicester Square “Cape Town Funny Fest in London” show four years in a row; doing my solo show at the Edinburough Festival; sharing a stage with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and comically critiquing his joke delivery. But every time I meet an audience and I hear the laughs, it is a delight that builds on the previous delight.

What are your 2024 plans?

I will tour “Fast and Reasonably Furious” around the country. All of February I will be in Johannesburg at Montecasino with the show.

What is your most memorable holiday and what happened?

Holidaying on the paradise island of Bora Bora. Idyllic, tranquil and the perfect postcard island getaway you can imagine. As far away from any continent as can be, it makes you feel like you might just have landed on another planet. Until you try and buy a Pina Colada and they charge you so much you figure they made the drink on ANOTHER PLANET!

Which country is on your bucket list?

I’ve still never visited Italy and for somebody who speaks so much faux-Latin and who got an A for Latin in Matric, I really should have visited this historically rich country before. I am revving up my vespa now….CIAO! IB

NO GIG IS TOO BIG OR SMALL FOR

New Hero

NEW HERO IS A MUSICAL DUO THAT SEEMS TO HIT THE RIGHT EMOTIONAL NOTES WITH THEIR FANS. WITH INTERNATIONAL TOURS ON THE CARDS, TEMO MPODI CAUGHT UP WITH THEM BEFORE THEIR YEAR GOT TOO BUSY.

New Hero is a beautiful name for a musical group, how did you come up with it?

That’s the first time it’s been described as “beautiful.” We’ll take it! Thanks so much! We’re both obsessed with comic books and related movies. We wanted something to fit in with our vibe. After about 100 random names, this is the one that came out tops.

Tops indeed! 2023 was a great year for you, it seems. What were some of the highlights? What a year! We are so grateful. For us, getting to perform at the Ultra Music Festival main stage was a huge highlight. Nobody can truly understand how much we love performing, so every single gig, whether it’s main stage at a huge festival or in a small basement club, is a highlight for us – we just want to be involved.

What does 2024 hold in store for you?

Our debut album, and hopefully lots more

30 INBOUNDSA / February 2024

festivals and gigs to be playing at! I think people will like our album; it’s got a lot of pain, excitement, freedom, happiness, and sadness in every song.

Besides your plans, what vision and expectations do you have for 2024? We both want to take on the global stage and we are currently in talks about a USA and European tour. I hope we are going to be reading this interview in a magazine at the airport while starting our tour.

Most people envision collaborations with their music idols. Who is that star to you right now? Keaton: For me, it’s Hans Zimmer. I love experimenting with styles of music outside of our usual range.

Scottie: I would collaborate with Keaton as he’s been my biggest idol and inspiration since I met him when we were around 18 or 19. But thankfully he’s chosen to work with me, so next up it would be PHAXE, an amazing artist. IB

Nat King Cole dies at age 45 In February 1965, American icon Nat King Cole died of lung cancer at the age of 45. A beloved singer, pianist, and actor, Cole recorded more than 100 hit pop songs during his career – making history along the way as he broke racial barriers. In addition to being the first Black host of an American TV series (the short-lived Nat ‘King’ Cole Show, Cole and his trio (bassist Wesley Prince and guitarist Oscar Moore) also led “King Cole Trio Time,” the first radio programme to be sponsored by Black musicians. Among other honours, Cole was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990, while his enduring recording of “The Christmas Song” is a perennial hit on the Billboard charts every holiday season.

KNOW YOUR ! FEBRUARY MUSIC HISTORY

Beatlemania hits USA On 7 February 1964, Pan Am Yankee Clipper flight 101 from London Heathrow landed at New York’s Kennedy Airport – and “Beatlemania” arrived. It was the first visit to the United States by the Beatles, a British rockand-roll quartet that had just scored its first No. 1 US hit six days before with “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” At Kennedy, the “Fab Four”, dressed in mod suits and sporting their trademark pudding bowl haircuts, were greeted by 3 000 screaming fans who caused a near riot when the boys stepped off their plane and onto American soil.

Victoria Beckham worst dressed In February 2008, Spice Girl Victoria Beckham was named the worst-dressed celebrity in an annual list of fashion disasters. Fashion critic Richard Blackwell, who had compiled the poll every year since 1960, said Beckham stepped out in “one skinny-mini monstrosity after another”. Amy Winehouse’s trademark beehive and tattoos helped earn her second place on the list. (References: ThisDayInMusic.com; Marqueemag.com)

LOVE IS…

What is love? A RELATIONSHIP, THEY SAY, IS ABOUT FRIENDSHIP, A SEXUAL ATTRACTION, INTELLECTUAL COMPATIBILITY, AND, OF COURSE, LOVE. LOVE IS THE GLUE THAT KEEPS A RELATIONSHIP STRONG. BUT LOVE HAS DIFFERENT MEANINGS FOR DIFFERENT PEOPLE. INBOUND SA EDITOR GAVIN PRINS ASKED A FEW MEDIA PERSONALITIES WHAT LOVE MEANS TO THEM.

Rory Booth, actor, film writer & singer

Melissa Pretorius, actress

“What is love? Baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, no more... But seriously, love can manifest in countless ways and forms. Love is the never-ending hugs you get from your nieces and nephews when they haven’t seen you in a while. It’s me laughing at a joke my dad has told me 10 times already and pretending it’s the first time I’ve heard it. It’s watching the sun rise in the eyes of your best friend at the top of Mount Sinai in Egypt. Love is always there.”

“Love is always being willing to listen. Love goes beyond the superficial; it’s patient and kind. It’s offering safety in the comfort of an embrace. When we are there for each other in times of need, and our words seem to fail and all we can offer is our love, that is enough.”

Loui Fish, underwear model, TV and radio presenter “Love to me and what I live by, is loyalty, respect and unconditional. I have never loved anyone on condition. Love to me in four words is – Luke and Zeke Fish (her sons).”

LOVE IS…

Abidah Dixon Mohamed, actress, radio and TV presenter “Everyone has a different way and understanding about what love is. Love is when someone puts your needs first. Love is when my husband puts a fork full of food in my mouth and tells me he loves me. My husband and I were introduced to each other years ago and we were married the next Sunday. This year, we will be married 30 years with five children and seven grandchildren.”

Dubbz, radio presenter “I am an affectionate person. So, for me, love is a continuous exchange of positive emotions and a source of joy in relationships. It is a deep emotional connection.”

Samantha Heystek, radio presenter “Love to me is feeling content in the silence of another. It’s the smirky grin you give one another or the ability to show disapproval through those telepathic conversations. It’s sharing the last bite of all of your favourites as you know they love it just as much as you do. It’s not being woken up the fifth time you’ve fallen asleep during your favourite show. It’s effort, but effort that’s easy. It’s as much compassionate as it is kind. Love is relentless, love is purpose.”

Eric Bouwer, actor Avril Albetti, reality star “I believe love is a verb. I feel like it’s a doing word. And you have to be consistent in how you show up. Without love, one can’t really fully exist – even it is self-love or love for others. Love is very important.”

“Love is the transcendence of the egotistical barriers of self to embrace through benevolence the essence of another. To discover a deeper treasure beneath the perpetual I-wantI-need existence. And by achieving it without any pretence we catch the yearning glimpse into the ineffable mind of God.” February 2024 / INBOUNDSA 33

LIFE STORY

Office Romance

THEY MET AT THE OFFICE, GOT MARRIED, AND ARE STILL TOGETHER TO HAVE AN AFFAIR WITH A COLLEAGUE OR NOT? MOST SEEM TO THINK IT’S A BAD IDEA WHILE OTHERS SAY THEY WILL DO IT AGAIN. ILOUISE AND MATTHEW MOORE FROM LEEDS IN THE UK, WERE MET WITH SOME AWKWARD OFFICE GOSSIP WHEN THEY STARTED A LOVE AFFAIR AT A PRETORIA LAW FIRM IN 2011. HOWEVER, THIS MONTH, THEY WILL BE CELEBRATING THEIR 10TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. THIS IS THEIR STORY…

O

ur love story started in 2011 in Mzansi where I, a 19-year-old Afrikaans girl, started working for a British law firm based in Pretoria whilst studying part-time at Unisa.

Four months later in March 2012, this loud flamboyant, and spirited girl (me) caught the attention of not just any colleague but one of the UK-based managers visiting the South African office to assist in its setup and staff training. To give some context, the UK staff were revered as highly important. They were our seniors and our bosses. When we started seeing each other I don’t think we thought of the logistics or the headaches, and we probably didn’t bargain on falling in love. But we soon realised that it was more than just a fling and I think that’s when it became more complicated. Whilst our love story is beautiful, I suppose at the time we didn’t fully realise some of the complicated and uncomfortable situations we would find ourselves in, after all, we were in love. Our relationship was forced into the open very quickly. We felt like we had to get ahead of it. I suppose we all know what people say behind our backs and the conclusions they may draw, not to mention that people do love a bit of office

34 INBOUNDSA / February 2024

gossip. We had to protect our relationship but also preserve our reputations. It was ‘braai day’ weekend in 2012 when some of our colleagues became suspicious and started putting it all together. That Monday on the public holiday we were forced to have a discussion. We realised that we cared deeply for each other and decided we were going to give our relationship a chance. On the Tuesday, the first day back at work, before the office gossip could well and truly set the office ablaze, Matt called a meeting with his superiors and came clean about everything. We reasoned that if senior management knew before anyone else, then it didn’t matter what people said. It didn’t mean it was plain sailing. We were confronted with some uncomfortable questions and comments at times. People making insinuations, even if it was in jest. Jokes about me doing it for the visa, and questions about whether I was just a rebound after his divorce. I would lie if I said there weren’t times when my life did not feel like one massive stereotype. But through all of that, the extortionate immigration costs, the big decisions as to who moves where and when, and packing up an entire life and leaving family. We were married on 7 February and have lived in Leeds, UK ever since, happy, flourishing, and celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary this year. IB

ACNE CAN AFFECT PEOPLE OF ALL AGES BY TEMO MPODI ACNE IS NOT JUST SOMETHING YOU GET DURING YOUR TEEN YEARS. IT AFFECTS PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. BUT WHY? SKINCARE SPECIALIST ALANA DU PLOOY EXPLAINS:

A

cne is a common skin condition that happens when hair follicles under the skin become clogged. Factors like hormones, stress, anxiety, diet, too much sun, pressure on the skin, and using oil-based beauty products all play a role in this skin condition. Having a good skincare routine is vital and if you don’t have one, I recommend trying the products mentioned here as they are easy to use and will help improve the condition of the skin.

The first step is to find a good facial cleanser. My personal favourite is the essence HELLO, GOOD STUFF! SKIN PERFECTING TONER. Remember it doesn’t matter how many products you use to treat your skin, being consistent with your skincare routine is VITAL along with fuelling your body with the necessary nutrients and keeping fit.

FITNESS

WHAT STANDS BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR

fitness goals? BY STACEY HOLLAND THE ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD “LOVE” IS FASCINATING; IT IS ROOTED IN OLD ENGLISH, GERMANIC, AND SANSKRIT, CLOSELY LINKED TO THE NOTIONS OF YEARNING, HOLDING SOMETHING DEAR, AND PLEASURE. SO, IN THIS MONTH OF LOVE, IT IS VALUABLE TO ADDRESS ONE OF THE SIGNIFICANT OBSTACLES STANDING BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR FITNESS GOALS IN 2024: DESIRE.

A

s the founder of LiveFit with Stacey Holland and GUTFit™, focusing on holistic approaches to fitness and gut health, my coaching model revolves around four pillars: THINK, EAT, MOVE, TRACK™. I use this framework to help my clients pinpoint where they’re getting stuck, and once someone addresses the first pillar, the other three fall into place quite quickly. When addressing THINKING, we consider limiting beliefs, ideas, and notions about weight, shape, and fitness. We delve into family history and adopt patterns, tackling their attitude toward the idea of getting fit. For many, there’s a lack of real desire. They acknowledge it’s a good thing to do, understanding the theoretical benefits. They approach the goal intellectually but seldomly with their hearts. Often, they choose a way of movement or eating that does little to ignite their soul! Now, undoubtedly, I hear you saying to yourself, “Stacey, ice-cream and pizza ignite my soul – and that’s precisely my problem!”

How you look at something alters your attitude toward it I understand this; I once believed that everything connected to the world of health and fitness involved limitation, starvation, restriction, a lack of flavour – void of desire and only achievable through sheer will and grit.

46 INBOUNDSA / February 2024

This is a mindset, a limited one that didn’t serve me, nor will it serve you. There’s a saying that perspective occurs when everything changes, yet nothing changes. How you choose to look at something can alter your entire attitude toward it. Being well and being fit needn’t be restrictive, boring, or lacking in vibrance and energy; au contraire, dear reader, it’s meant to infuse your life with more life! If you choose to consider it from this perspective, you’ll start extracting joy from activities you used to loathe; dare I say you may start to fall in love with movement, with nutrition. Should that not work (yes, yes, my inspiring soliloquy does not work on everyone), then my challenge to you is to start finding an activity you enjoy. What did you love to do as a kid? Dancing, skipping, playing cricket in the street with your friends? These memories can inspire you to pursue an activity that you already associate with pleasure. There’s another root word of love that I find quite endearing, particularly in a South African context; “lief,” an archaic English word denoting doing something happily or gladly. In this month of love, of “lief,” find an activity that you can say you do happily. Move from a place of laughter and love, and it is no longer just “working out”; but becomes play! IB

HEALTH

GASTROINTESTINAL HEALTH:

colonoscopy 5 REASONS TO GO FOR A

A COLONOSCOPY IS THE BEST METHOD FOR EARLY DETECTION, DIAGNOSIS, AND TREATMENT OF VARIOUS GASTROINTESTINAL CONDITIONS, INCLUDING COLORECTAL CANCER. THERE ARE A HOST OF REASONS WHY YOU MAY BE REFERRED BY A GP FOR A COLONOSCOPY, BUT IDEALLY, YOU WANT TO BE PRE-EMPTIVELY CHECKING FOR PRE-CANCEROUS POLYPS OR OTHER GASTROINTESTINAL ANOMALIES, RATHER THAN WAITING FOR SYMPTOMS TO PRESENT, WRITES DR. MARÉ DU PLESSIS.

50 INBOUNDSA / February 2024

HEALTH

T

he majority of colonoscopies are performed as part of screening programmes for colon cancer. Most often it is done to investigate the cause of blood in the stool, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, a change in bowel habit, or an abnormality found on colonic X-rays or a computerized axial tomography (CT) scan.

is then slowly advanced under visual control into the rectum and throughout the colon. The colonoscope’s camera and light source enable a detailed examination of the colon lining, allowing for the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of abnormalities.

Common reasons for a colonoscopy •

The most common reasons for a colonoscopy are:

Periodic colonoscopies for early detection and preventive measures for people with a family history of noncolonic cancers or specific colonic issues (such as ulcerative colitis or colonic polyps). Investigating gastrointestinal symptoms such as blood in the stool, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, or changes in bowel habits. A follow-up for previous polyps or colon cancer to monitor for recurrence and detect new abnormalities early. Further investigation of abnormalities detected through other imaging techniques and scans, allowing for a more comprehensive assessment. For polyps to be removed, and other interventions to be performed to address various gastrointestinal issues, without hospital admittance.

Ideally, everyone over the age of 50 should have a screening colonoscopy. Most patients wait until symptoms develop, but if precancerous polyps are detected during a screening, they can be removed during the procedure, mitigating the potential for cancer to develop.

The procedure

The colonoscopy procedure involves the insertion of a flexible colonoscope through the anus, which

This procedure can be done as an outpatient in a doctor’s room if they have an endoscopy suite with the necessary equipment. There is no reason to fear the procedure. People understandably imagine discomfort or pain, but you are fully sedated. After the procedure, you can consult and receive immediate feedback on results, and discuss any recommended treatment or further tests.

Also tests for unexplained iron deficiency

Another reason you may be referred for a colonoscopy is when you have an unexplained iron deficiency. Chronic blood loss is usually the cause of iron deficiency, and the most common location of chronic blood loss is in the gastrointestinal tract, so we do a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy to look for an undiagnosed malignancy or lesion in the stomach or colon. The gastroscopy checks the throat, food pipe (oesophagus) and stomach, which is the upper part of your digestive system. This is often done in conjunction with the colonoscopy which covers the lower part of the digestive system. IB February 2024 / INBOUNDSA 51

Riana Mooi: VALENTINE’S DAY IS OVERRATED!

BEAUTY QUEEN TURNED LIFE COACH, RIANA MOOI AND HER HUSBAND, LIONEL FRANK HAVE JOINED CALLS FOR LOVE TO BE CELEBRATED FAR AND BEYOND 14 FEBRUARY. HAVING BOTH BEEN MARRIED BEFORE, HERE THEY SHARE TIPS ON HOW TO KEEP THE FLAME BURNING.

INSPIRATION

Y

ou both have been married before. Any lessons learned?

Riana: When you enter marriage, you do it with a covenant mindset, with plans for “until death do us part”. And divorce is not an option. You both have to show up and do the work because just like it takes time for your marriage to grow into a mess; it will take time to grow out of it. Lionel: Someone once told me that they wouldn’t wish divorce on their worst enemy. We understand now. My advice to couples going through challenges is to do whatever it takes to get help. Speak to someone with Godly wisdom before making any major decisions.

What is the most romantic thing your partner has done for you? Riana: Lionel is such a romantic. He has planned so many romantic gestures for me, from candlelit dinners, and cooking the perfect meal, to leaving little post-it notes with messages of love in my lunchbox for me; that’s not forgetting the best foot rubs. But probably the one that stands out for me is my surprise 47th surprise birthday party, which he planned. Lionel: Riana planned a trip to Italy for me as a 50th birthday gift in March 2000. Sadly COVID hit us, and Italy was locked down two days before we were about to fly out. But it got a whole lot more romantic though… in 2022 she took me to the Seychelles instead.

Is Valentine’s Day still relevant? Riana: Yes and No. The hype around this day I think is a little overrated when it comes to making this “the day” of extravagant love gestures. For me, it should be actions and words lived out daily as part of the relationship. And they don’t have to be over the top. Lionel: Yes and No. We certainly always make a special day of it, but we try to make a special day of every day as well. For Riana and me, it’s Valentine’s Day 365! Just a special message on WhatsApp, a nice cup of tea, holding hands while

we watch TV in the evening, or telling each other how we love and appreciate each other.

What is love? Riana: Love is what the eyes see, what the ears hear, and what the heart always remembers and feels. Lionel: Someone sang: What is love, baby don’t hurt me. Hahaha. I like that. A man named Paul said, “Love is patient, kind, not jealous, not boastful, not proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way, is not irritable, and keeps no record of being wronged. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” IB

CENTURY CITY, CAPE TOWN, AND THE MAGNIFICENT, PASTEL TINTED TABLE MOUNTAIN HANGS LIKE A BACKDROP FOR THE MONUMENTAL PROCESSION OF 100 LIFE-SIZE BRONZE FIGURES, ALL WALKING FORWARD BUT FROZEN IN MOTION. THEIR ARMS ARE UP AND OUTSTRETCHED, WAITING TO GREET VISITORS. THIS IS THE ‘LONG MARCH TO FREEDOM’.

moving experience to connect with the lives of these iconic individuals so vividly crafted. From the Khoi leaders of the 1600s, to proud Xhosa and Zulu kings, warriors, prophets and clerics, to the men and women who led the liberation movements through the dark years of apartheid in South Africa – the procession is a sweeping proud narrative of South Africa’s diverse history and cultures. In the words of CEO Dali Tambo, developer of the original concept back in 2010, Long March to Freedom is “…the world’s greatest exhibition in bronze, and South Africa’s most enticing heritage tourism attraction. A pantheon of 100 life-size bronze sculptures of liberation heroes honours South Africa’s brightest and bravest icons and tells the story of the country’s 350-year journey to freedom and democracy. “At the heart of meaningful tourism experiences lies integrity, depth, culture, and heritage. South Africa’s cultural and political heritage is one of the country’s most valuable assets. Our struggle was the moral cause of the international community and the greatest solidarity movement of the 20th Century. “It is the duty of the generation that remembers to

ensure that those who follow know of the efforts of legions of freedom fighters; know of our journey to democracy and understand the sacrifices that allow us to have the society we do today,” Tambo adds.

A must-see heritage attraction for all

Thirteen years on, and with the contributions of many hundreds of artists, artisans, researchers and academics, trainees, administrators, too many to mention, the directors of Long March to Freedom talk of ensuring the exhibition becomes a mustsee heritage attraction for all South Africans and international visitors. Youth involvement is also a focus; the lively schools programme currently sponsors school groups, primarily from less advantaged areas, to visit the exhibition for a morning of fun learning and interaction with the iconic historical individuals. A visit to Long March to freedom is one of discovery, reflection, and a full range of emotions. But one thing is for sure – you will leave elated, inspired, awed and proud of this amazing history, this amazing country. Long March to Freedom is developed, owned, and operated by the National Heritage Project NonProfit Company.

KNOWN AS THE “LAND OF THE GODS”, BALI LOVES TO SHOW OFF ITS NATURAL BEAUTY, ITS ACTIVE VOLCANOES, AND ITS VAST RICE FIELDS. IT IS ALSO A SURFER’S PARADISE. ADD TO THIS CULTURE, DANCE, ARTS AND CRAFTS, STRETCHES OF LUXURIOUS BEACHES AND A PUMPING NIGHTLIFE. MIKHAIL MOTALA QUICKLY FOUND OUT WHY THIS INDONESIAN ISLAND IS A MUST FOR TRAVELLERS. HERE ARE SOME OF HIS FAVOURITE SPOTS.

xplore Uluwatu Temple and take in its breathtaking scenery at sundown, catch traditional Balinese dancers at the temple’s cultural show, and watch out for mischievous monkeys on the temple grounds. Meander down the famous Uluwatu Cliffs, check out terraced markets, and pick up some traditional crafts. You can also paddle out to the renowned Ulu surf break, nestled in a beautiful cove, walking through a cave to get to it. Then head up to the popular Single Fin surf bar for a cold one.

One of the best ways to take in the breathtaking scenery of Canggu’s Echo Beach is on horseback. Alternatively, if four-legged equestrian friends aren’t your thing, take a leisurely stroll deep into the heart of Canggu’s farmlands. There are numerous paths meandering through lush green rice fields, passing rice farmers with their traditional Balinese conical straw hats who are harvesting rice husks and cattle grazing in the pastures.

Where to stay

I highly recommend Tregge Surf Camp Uluwatu, not just for its close proximity to Uluwatu Temple,

Uluwatu Cliffs but also only a stone’s throw from the world famous Uluwatu surf break and iconic white limestone cliff’s jutting out of the ocean, terraced markets and the Single Fin beach bar. It also boasts stunning scenery and a luscious garden that surrounds. It’s a little bit of tranquillity on the porch of your own surf cottage after a long day of surfing or sight-seeing.

What to eat

Delphi Warung is a one-of-a-kind cafe perched right on top of Uluwatu’s white cliff’s, situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the bay on the water’s edge. Walking to the restaurant is an adventure in itself – strolling through the terraced markets, down a winding path and the cliff onto the white beach of Ulu Cove, through a cave and then up a stairway. Delphi Warung is one of the most picturesque restaurant views you’ll ever see! I recommend the traditional Indonesian satay and flame grilled chicken skewers served with a tangy peanut sauce and accompanied by white jasmine rice and grilled vegetables on the side.

When to visit

One of the best times of the year to visit Uluwatu and the Padang Padang region for surfing is

62 INBOUNDSA / February 2024

Padang Padang beach during the dry season, between April and October due to the southeast trade winds. Racetrack and Temples are some of the best surf breaks. The wet (Monsoon) season is from November until March, but don’t fret, there are still decent waves on the east coast of the island, including Keramas, Green Bowl and Nusa Due to name a few. The wet season is also a popular time of the year for white water river rafting on the island due to the increased rainfall, which is predominantly between December and February. Advantages of travelling during the rainy season is that the weather is cooler, it is less crowded, and there is less traffic. The vegetation is a lot greener and lusher due to the heavy rainfall, giving a different perspective to this amazing island. IB

LIVING ABROAD

Name: Vuyo Mahashe City: Paris, France Born: Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Occupation: Singer and songwriter

Paris

MORE THAN JUST THE EIFFEL TOWER AND THE LOUVRE

LOVE IS – IN MOST INSTANCES – IN THE AIR WHEN YOU VISIT PARIS OR THE “CITY OF LOVE”. WITH ITS RICH HISTORY, PARIS REMAINS A TOP DESTINATION FOR PEOPLE CELEBRATING LOVE. KEEPING WITH OUR THEME OF LOVE THIS FEBRUARY, WE CALLED SOUTH AFRICAN SINGER AND SONGWRITER VUYO MAHASHE TO FIND OUT WHAT IT’S LIKE LIVING IN PARIS.

How long have you been living in Paris? I have lived here for two years.

How is your French coming along? I am learning the language. It’s very difficult.

What do you do there?

I work on original music and perform my own music to audiences in Paris. Music is powerful and it brings people together and I want to use

64 INBOUNDSA / February 2024

it to bring cultures together. France and South Africa. Not many South Africans are taught the French language and not many French are taught Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho and other incredible South African languages. I think music could be the beginning of bridging this gap.

What do you love about French culture?

I love many things about French culture. I love their love for their own culture and people.

LIVING ABROAD

I love the food here. It is so well produced in France, and you always know what you are eating is good. I love their beautiful sense of design in fashion, and architecture and the contribution they have made to lifestyle and living. Some of the world’s top fashion maisons (houses) are in Paris. It is the leader of luxury and fashion.

What do you find most challenging?

Just like anyone who moves to a new country, I would have to say it’s the language. I think this is general with everyone who did not grow up speaking the language, but it has been the best experience learning French and being able daily to navigate my life and meet incredible people along the way. It is something I encourage everyone to learn a new language and get yourself out of your comfort zone.

What is the first thing to consider when emigrating to Paris?

Paris is more than just the Eiffel Tower and The Louvre. It is a functioning heritage and technological city that is one of the world’s most visited destinations, and it has so much more to offer than the usual places you see in the media. Take time to explore. It’s also very expensive so start saving. Also, remember that it is another country with different cultures and ways of doing things. Be willing to adapt and be willing to learn new things and relearn and take time to reevaluate things that you thought you already knew to make room for new information. French culture is glorious and amazing in its essence, and it is such a beautiful thing to get the opportunity to

experience it and live here.

What do you miss about SA?

The flavour of the food, the vibes and the tenacity of the people. I miss the people’s ability to see the positive in chaos. The beautiful beaches and the beautiful diverse languages you hear daily are also what I miss.

What do you do when you miss home?

I enjoy writing and I am always writing songs and lyrics. This brings me the sense that I am closer to home and familiarity. So, it distracts me when I miss South Africa. I write music that is inspired by home, and I create art that always reminds me of my South African roots. Besides work, I call my sister and talk to her, and we catch up and laugh and talk about loadshedding! And I have a good circle of friends who are South African here in Paris and we all have fun together and celebrate our own beautiful culture here. IB

WHEN IT COMES TO BUYING A HOME, PERSONAL CHOICE SHAPES THE DECISIONMAKING PROCESS. ESTATE LIVING’S CEO, LOUISE MARTIN, HANDPICKED THESE LUXURY ESTATES TO SHOWCASE A SPECTRUM OF OPTIONS THAT PROVIDE DISTINCT PROPERTY, LIFESTYLE AND ENVIRONMENT OPTIONS CATERING TO FAMILIES, RETIREES, AND INVESTORS.

1. Silver Lakes Gold and Wildlife Estate, Pretoria

Located on the outskirts of Pretoria, Silver Lakes Estate stands out with its expansive freehold properties, boasting 1 000m² homes valued at

R10 million and a unique wildlife sanctuary within its bounds. This estate not only offers sizeable houses but also features a retirement community, a Peter

Matkovich signature-designed golf course, a country club, a restaurant, and a conference centre. It is ideal for families and retirees, as the homeowners association (HOA) works hard to foster a strong sense of community through events and activities. The estate has a robust capital reserve and upgrades, and new offerings are always underway. I particularly like the HOA’s innovative approach to activities for residents of all ages from chess clubs to wine-tasting and dog walking for adults as well as golfing events.

2. Kyalami Estate, Johannesburg

Kyalami Estate in Johannesburg is a shining example of what an estate can achieve through exceptional management. The team here does amazing things on the estate, with the goal of not only investing in the infrastructure but also the residents. They have created spaces throughout the estate that bring

residents together and this receives support from the family-friendly community. Showcasing a harmonious blend of residential comfort and urban accessibility, the estate is strategically positioned near the Kyalami shopping centre, is well-managed and offers homes averaging around R5 million.

3. Dainfern Valley, Johannesburg

Dainfern Valley, situated within the borders of the Dainfern precinct, exemplifies collaborative community living. The area has several residential estates, a shopping centre, a college, and a commercial element all within one precinct. Over the years, these estates and businesses have got together and formed the Dainfern Community Association, which maintains the common areas around each of these estates and has a robust shared security solution. This is outdoor living at its best. Beyond its gates, Dainfern Valley offers picturesque walkways, February 2024 / INBOUNDSA 67

well-maintained common areas, and largerthan-average houses priced at approximately R8 million, creating an ideal haven for those seeking natural beauty, security, and tranquillity.

offering a diverse community from young families to retirees.

The association works hard to maintain and uplift the surrounding area, making it safer, cleaner, and more attractive for all. This area is very popular with the corporate rental market.

George is a forward-thinking municipality and as a result, Kingswood promises a growing investment opportunity with prices currently around the R4 million mark. It is a great option for those looking to buy a great family home now and see their investment grow solidly over the next decade.

4. Crossways Farm Village, Jeffreys Bay

6. Somerset Lifestyle and Retirement Village, Western Cape

Created by the same team that developed Thesen Islands in Knysna, this beautifully positioned estate has its own municipality, agricultural land, and a variety of housing options that suit a cross-section of buyers.

What is great about this estate, is that besides the beautiful sweeping ocean views and onsite care and nursing centre, it also holds an excellent position within Somerset West.

As South Africa’s first agri-hood, Crossways Farm Village, located halfway between Jeffreys Bay and Gqeberha, has transformed the concept of community living into a fully-fledged town.

The estate offers country living with modern and contemporary features that provide a unique blend of urban conveniences and rural lifestyle. The plot-and-plan development starts with a land purchase and then you select the home style. The costs would depend on the position of land on the estate as well as home design and finishes, but prices begin at a competitive R3 million. With its own water and electricity supply, lively Saturday market, onsite farm and outdoor activities like mountain biking, the 520-hectare estate is attractive to a diverse range of buyers who are looking to get out of the city and enjoy a country lifestyle.

5. Kingswood Golf Estate, George

This is a relatively young, up-and-coming estate within the George area, and is especially attractive to investors thanks to its ongoing development. The fourth phase has completely sold out and is now under construction. The Kingswood HOA are currently building a community clubhouse. The golf course is a must-play for enthusiasts and hosts several tournaments every year. There is a mix of properties, all surrounding the golf course and

68 INBOUNDSA / February 2024

Somerset Lifestyle and Retirement Village redefine retirement living with a hybrid model, offering life-right homes, sectional title apartments, assisted living units and freehold homes.

There are a range of fantastic golf courses in proximity, as well as shopping centres and good access to transport networks. The Life Right model is ideal for investors looking for a comfortable lifestyle but at a more affordable price. The current phase of homes that were released in late 2023 are selling from R4.7 million.

7. Welgevonden Estate, Western Cape

Priced at an inviting R3.5 million buy-in, Welgevonden Estate in the Western Cape is a little gem, exemplifying strategic development. Originally targeting students, it has transformed into a high-density estate thanks to the board’s foresight and decision to build up a strong capital reserve fund in 2017. This has enabled the estate to undergo major upgrades, like their new leisure area around the onsite dam and the development of new facilities. The estate has also refreshed its branding which is working if you look at the escalating property prices. This is a competitive estate and serves as a blueprint for successful community development, highlighting what can be achieved when an estate has a like-minded board, and professional management and understands the fundable need to continue to reinvest in the common assets. Providing a one-size-fits-all list of the companies to invest in would be irresponsible Choosing investment companies is highly subjective and dependent on individual risk tolerance, investment goals, and market conditions. However, based on current market capitalization and potential, the companies I mentioned are worth considering.

Providing a one-size-fits-all list of the companies to invest in would be irresponsible as investment decisions require careful consideration of one’s individual risk tolerance, financial goals, and investment timeframe. This is not an exhaustive list and only provides a starting point for consideration. IB

How to invest

There are several platforms and methods for investing in companies which include the following: •

BAIA

RESTAURANT, CAPE TOWN BY MILOU STAUB CAPETONIANS ARE OBSESSED WITH NEW RESTAURANTS, BUT 23-YEAROLD BAIA SHOWS WE SHOULD VALUE CONSISTENCY TOO.

O

ne of Cape Town’s most loved seafood institutions, Baia, immediately impresses with its size; over 1 000m2 floor space. Entering the restaurant, the massive entrance sculpture sets the tone for an elegant and chic decor. The large tables are well spaced out and dressed in white linen tablecloths and napkins. And its ambiance is perfect for both intimate gatherings and larger celebrations. I was shown to my table by hostess Daryl, who introduced me to my waitron, Billy. Right from the beginning I felt cared for. I found myself gazing at Table Mountain, forgetting I was there for the food (which is top-notch by the way). No words can adequately describe this million-dollar view!

74 INBOUNDSA / February 2024

In my opinion, nothing beats bread and butter! This little bun of heaven was made onsite, with a touch of rosemary. Witnessing the butter slowly melting into it let me know I was in for a culinary experience like no other. Chef Patrick is a legend and has been at the restaurant for three decades. Patrick spoke proudly about his Mozambican upbringing where his passion for food originally was born, and his trip to Germany where he wasn’t allowed to buy takeaway food and so started cooking for himself, taking his love for food to full bloom. Chef Patrick is solely responsible for all produce used in his kitchen; everything is fresh and prepared onsite.

REVIEW

The starter…

As it was a ridiculously warm evening, I chose the New Style Salmon Sashimi as a starter, which is an extremely generous portion. It was refreshing and had just the right amount of thinly sliced ginger, fresh chilli, and a drizzle of sesame oil.

The side veggies were fresh and crisp, bursting with life with zesty lemon binding all of the flavours together. To complement my meal, I chose a crisp Sauvignon Blanc from the restaurant’s extensive wine list.

The dessert course…

The main course…

Chef Patrick came to check on me when my main course arrived; the Whole Baby Kingklip. As I gave him the freedom to surprise me with my main, I was curious to see whether I was spot on about the sauce. I asked: “Patrick, my man, is this a deconstructed Beurre Blanc sauce?” He smiled and confidently replied: “I am not here to reinvent the wheel. What has worked for decades will also work today; Beurre Blanc on a delicate white fish is always a winner”. Chef Patrick also took his time to do the rounds of the other tables, living vicariously through his guests’ gastronomic experiences, and genuinely interested to know if the dishes were up to their liking. Back to my delicious main course affair. I’m one of those carb-conscious humans; no carbs after the sun goes to bed. But I simply had to make an exception by tasting the Portuguese tangy tomato and onion-infused rice.

As the sun dipped behind Signal Hill, it was time for a sweet ending. As much as Billy raved about their sticky toffee or Malva puddings, I decided to opt for the Creme Brulé. This velvety dessert was complemented by fresh berries, creating a sublime balance of sweetness and acidity. Throughout my dining experience, the service at Baia was impeccable, the staff were all attentive and friendly. It isn’t unusual for Baia to host special guests; to name a few, Denzel Washington, Justin Bieber, the Kardashians, Leonardo DiCaprio, Oprah Winfrey, Paris Hilton, and Kofi Annan; the list goes on and on. What sets Baia apart is its consistency in delivering a timeless quality experience. The restaurant has mastered a delicate balance of food, aesthetics, and ambiance, creating a space where each visit feels like a celebration. Baia knows how to spoil a seafood lover with a menu that reads like a love letter about the ocean. Speaking of love, for those who are thinking of spoiling their partners for Valentine’s Day, don’t wait any longer to make a booking at Baia as it is already nearly full for this special day! GADGETS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR PARTNER LOVE YOU FOREVER BY DEAN McCOUBREY

ATTENTION, LOVEBIRDS AND TECH ENTHUSIASTS! IF YOU HAVE A PARTNER, GETTING THE “BIG DAY” SPOT-ON IS IMPORTANT. I DON’T MEAN GETTING MARRIED, I MEAN 14 FEBRUARY, VALENTINE’S DAY! NOW, I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE THINKING: VALENTINE’S DAY, WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH TECH GADGETS… BUT HOLD YOUR HORSES, DITCH THE CLICHÉS, WE’RE HERE TO TALK ABOUT TECH THAT BRINGS US TOGETHER…

T

he adage is often true: It’s the thought that counts. Essentially, it’s not just what you buy for a loved one, but what the subtext of your choice of gift says. I figured that almost every magazine and lifestyle website would cover the adult toy landscape, but knowing that’s already been unboxed by journalists, INBOUND SA want to go deeper into that subtext of what our partner interprets when they open their gift. What’s the story behind it? If being together is a cornerstone of a relationship, and sharing and caring are the behaviours that bind us together, let’s have a look at some smart gifts that do exactly that. Here’s our Big Five:

It’s like that old couple holding hands in the park, but in coffee form. Sip it with your significant other and watch as the romantic notes of orange blossom do their dance. And hey, if the date’s going south, at least you have great coffee to savour!

These coolers are like a love nest for your wine bottles, keeping them at the perfect temperature. Nothing says ‘I adore you’ like a glass of chilled Chardonnay from your very own sophisticated cooler. Cheers to that!

The Pizzaiola Pizza Maker: For saucy kitchen dates

Lastly, a pizza maker like The Pizzaiola is for those who find kneading dough oddly romantic. It’s expensive indeed, but it’s fun, it’s messy, and it’s delicious – kind of like a good relationship? Turn your kitchen into a mini pizzeria and let the flour fly!

So, there you have it, a techy twist on Valentine’s Day that’s more about connection and less about, well, the other stuff, which is wonderful and necessary and exciting and uplifting and connecting too. But gifts like these are the ones which keep on giving, and isn’t that what love’s all about? Happy Month of Love, folks! May your 29 magic evenings be filled with love, laughter, and, of course, a bit of techassisted connection. Power up. IB February 2024 / INBOUNDSA 77

BOOK CLUB

FIFTY-TWO SHADES OF INSPIRATION BY GAVIN PRINS Chicago-based Finance Coach Michael Bart Mathews uses his poetry and storytelling superpower to inspire and motivate in this new book titled Fifty-Two Shades of Inspiration available on Amazon. Mathews spoke to us about the book’s inspiration.

What inspired you to write this book?

My mission is to encourage, inspire, and empower my dear readers with authentic, impactful content.

It has a catchy title. Any comparison to E.L. James’ erotic novel “Fifty Shades of Grey”? Yes. You can be, do, and have your heart’s desire.

Why should we read this book?

Leaders are readers. What you read determines the quality of your communication skills.

What would you like people to learn from this book?

When you look in the mirror of your life, are you telling your reflection the truth?

OUR OTHER FAVOURITES

The Intervention

by Stav Dimitriadis, R320

In a world on the brink of disaster, will humanity unite to confront its biggest threat? Using fiction to create a scenario where we begin to heal our planet, Stav gives us an optimistic look at possible solutions to the impending global crisis. Thoroughly researched, this book is a thoughtprovoking debut in the science genre.

Love at First Flight by Jo Watson, R390

After four months of only speaking over the intercom, air traffic controller Pippa Edwards finally meets pilot Andrew Boyce-Jones faceto-face. Soon, they discover they both need a date. Tired of failed relationships, Pippa wants to evade the inevitable questions at her dreaded 10-year school reunion in Cape Town. The solution seems simple. A pact, a fake dating pact for as long as it’s mutually beneficial. February 2024 / INBOUNDSA 79
