THE LOVE EDITION
IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN – RED ROSES, CHOCOLATES, OR EVEN A SHINY NEW CAR. AND FOR SOME OF YOU, MAYBE EVEN YOUR PARTNER DROPPING TO ONE KNEE!
Don’t get me wrong, I love material things as much as the next person. But the moments I treasure most with my husband are the experiences we’ve shared. Like that one afternoon on a beach in Île Sainte-Marie, a tiny island off Madagascar. We spent two hours lying next to each other without saying a word, yet somehow, it felt like the best time of our lives.
Or the staycation we had at The Leonardo Hotel in Sandton – South Africa’s tallest building – where we walked into our room to find bottles of French champagne waiting for us.
Roses wilt. Chocolates? They get eaten. And that new car? It’ll eventually lose its shine. But experiences, like a picnic in your own garden or dinner at the spot where you first met, create memories you’ll talk about for years.
Speaking of unforgettable moments, I was quite surprised to learn our cover guy, Anton Jeftha planned his engagement for eight months! But it’s a night he or his fiancée will never forget.
When putting together this issue, we wanted to give you something different from the usual gift ideas like perfumes or jewellery. So, we came up with five unique Valentine’s Day experiences. If you try any of them, we’d love to hear how it went!
This month also marks two years since the heartbreaking loss of HipHop artist AKA. His mom, Lynn, and daughter, Kairo, recently travelled to Istanbul to honour his memory – it was his dream to take his family to this city. Fortunately, Lynn shared the images with us.
Have an awesome month.
Ciao!
THIS MONTH’S BURNING QUESTION…
Is it safe to couch surf?
ANSWER:
Couchsurfing is an app that allows you to stay over in someone’s home for free. In most cases, they offer their couch to travellers so they can experience a city and not have to fork out money for accommodation.
While staying in a stranger’s house might not be for everyone, it’s nevertheless a safe and fun way to travel (not to mention an affordable one). Much like Airbnb, Couchsurfing hosts have reviews and profiles you can read to make sure you’re staying with someone you feel you’d get along with. It’s not much different than Airbnb (except it’s free!).
Just do your homework by checking out reviews of a specific place you have in mind.

YOUR SHOCKING TRAVEL STORIES
LOST IN TRANSLATION
by Cassidy James
LOST IN TRANSLATION
It all started with my overly ambitious decision to visit a charming village in Italy known for its “authentic” experiences. Armed with a phrasebook and misplaced confidence, I hopped off the train in what I thought was the right town. Spoiler: it wasn’t.
I wandered through cobblestone streets that seemed far too quiet for a tourist hotspot, but I convinced myself it was just rustic charm. Hungry, I entered a café and attempted to order a sandwich in Italian. My proud attempt at “panino con prosciutto” was met with a long pause before
the barista handed me...a raw onion and a glass of milk.
Still undeterred, I asked for directions to the local B&B. Through an elaborate game of charades, I ended up being led to someone’s spare bedroom, where an elderly couple insisted, I stay for dinner. Lovely? Yes. The problem? Dinner was an endless parade of mystery meats, none of which I could identify.
The moral? Never trust your sense of direction – or a phrasebook – when hungry and sleep-deprived. At least I left with a great story (and a fear of onions).
Cassidy James, Limpopo
WINE NOT?
I was thrilled about my upcoming trip to Europe and treated myself to a gorgeous pair of white pants. I couldn’t wait to wear them and decided to put them on for the flight. I settled into my seat and waited eagerly for the first trolley run of the night flight, getting comfortable with my book and a glass of red wine. The guy in front of me had a very different idea of getting comfortable. He pulled his hoodie over his head, put his earphones in, and reclined the seat all the way back, getting ready for his night’s rest. Needless to say, my entire glass of red wine ended up all over my brand-new white pants. It was not a good look, especially when flying budget with multiple stopovers!

SCATTERBRAINED AND LOVING IT
Our December holiday started with a small “blip” but turned into a blessing. After leaving
home at 4am on the 26th, I realised our booking was for the 27th. I broke the news to my husband at a Bloemfontein pit stop, four hours into our journey. After searching, we found a lodge near Komga, an hour from Haga Haga. It was a blessing in disguise! The lodge offered stunning views, and we spotted jackal buzzards and a Knysna Loerie. My husband and sons were grateful for the mix-up, and the trip became a perfect opportunity for memory-making and recharging. Despite the awkward start, we enjoyed a fantastic holiday together. Samantha Choles, Johannesburg
UNFRIENDLY SKIES
In 2019, new passport in hand, I attempted to check in to a multileg flight to Korea via Gqeberha, Johannesburg, and Hong Kong. The Gqeberha ground staff, clearly ignorant of immigration requirements, interrogated me about my job and international travel history despite my valid visa and residency card.
Victimised and humiliated, I presented employment contracts and residency documentation to appease the curmudgeonly supervisor. Believe it or not, she later followed me to a café near the gate to publicly berate me further before announcing she’d redirected my luggage - further delaying me and adding insult to injury, patrons looking on in disbelief.
Gobsmacked, I swore off flying with that “friendly” airline again. South African hospitality? Far from it. Delon le Roux, Port Elizabeth

Anton Jeftha ENTERS HIS VILLAIN ERA
SOUTH AFRICAN STAR ANTON JEFTHA IS STEPPING INTO HIS DARK SIDE WITH A BANG, JOINING THE CAST OF NETFLIX’S ONE PIECE SEASON 2.
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
Known for his smouldering looks and chiselled physique, South African actor and model Anton Jeftha is proving there’s more to him than just a pretty face. He’s also a talented performer, recently landing a role in Netflix’s much-loved adaptation of the manga series One Piece. He’s playing Corona, a shady antagonist in the Drum Island arc, and it sounds like we’re in for some serious drama.
“Corona is a bit villainous. He thinks he should be the true ruler while serving under King Wapple,” the actor shared, revealing the duality of his character. “He has aspirations of power that make him both a follower and a contender for control.”
So, how did Anton end up crossing paths with Monkey D. Luffy and the gang? Turns out, his love for choreography and action scenes sealed the deal. “This role required a lot of fighting scenes,” he said enthusiastically. Being part of a large-scale production meant that the commitment to detail and storytelling could be extensive. “As South Africans, we don’t often work
on big-budget productions, so it was a unique experience,” he added.
Anton also shared what it was like being on set, where everything was super top-secret. “Everything was hush-hush because this is one of Netflix’s biggest productions globally. The Covid protocols were strict, and I can’t share much about the storyline, but it was a special environment,” he remarked.
For fans of One Piece, the upcoming season promises to be a feast for the eyes. “The worlds that production companies have created are mind-blowing,” he claimed, expressing excitement for the blend of fantasy and highquality production that will engage audiences. “As a fan myself, I was captivated just by the visuals and stunts. It’s an actor’s dream to work in such an enchanted environment.”
But don’t think Anton’s forgetting his roots. Back home, he’s been busy with local projects like kykNet’s Skemergrond. And while he’s keeping tight-lipped about future plans, he’s determined to spotlight South African talent.
“We have so much talent and potential here. It’s important for me to focus on our storytelling,” he said passionately.
It’s not all work and no play, though. Anton’s also celebrating some big personal news – he’s engaged to Tegan Goldman!
“It’s a very exciting time for Tegan and I and for our families, we are planning wedding and venues already, we’re gearing more toward a private wedding because my life is already so public. We are excited to build something special and this was the right time to take our relationship to the next level.”
And the proposal? Eight months of planning went into it, and Anton says it felt like one big, epic date. “It was all about being vulnerable and intentional. It was such a special moment,” he added.
Preferring a more private ceremony, the couple looks forward to building a special future together, valuing the significance of this new life stage.
Of course, with February being the month of love, we couldn’t resist asking him the big question: What does love mean to him? “Love has taken on different meanings for me as I’ve matured. It’s about selflessness and growing together,” he reflected. “However, I believe that love is a constant creation and requires patience and effort from both partners.”
As the chat wrapped up, Anton made it clear where his heart truly lies. “Cape Town will always be home. I’ve lived in other places and experienced different cultures, but there’s nothing like this city.” IB

L ve IN THE SPOTLIGHT
TO CELEBRATE FEBRUARY’S THEME OF LOVE, VENECIA VALENTINE SAT DOWN WITH COUPLES WHO SHARE A COMMON PASSION IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY.
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
The entertainment scene is sometimes said to be a cut-throat industry with heaps of drama, intrigue, hours of work and the battle to remain relevant, but for others, it’s said to be the opening chapter of their biggest love stories.
ACTORS DENVER VRAAGOM AND INGRID PAULUS
No stranger to the local TV industry, Denver Vraagom and Ingrid Paulus share their tips on keeping the flame alive.
How did you meet?
Denver: We met on the set of Zing!, a kykNET and M-Net reality show, I immediately fell in love with Ingrid and asked one of the contestants to win her over by singing, Sting’s Every Breath You Take. That was back in 2003. It was not long before we acted opposite each other and things did not only heat up on set, but also in our personal life.
Valentine’s Day, yay or nay?
Ingrid: We celebrate Valentine’s Day every day surprising each other with little gifts, whether it’s a chocolate or a piece of jewellery, a manicure, pedicure or massage.
How do you balance work and your personal lives?
Denver: We try not to discuss work, unless we’re working on the same project. Often stealing some time, every day, to check in. Family comes first and then jobs.
Your tip to keep the love alive?
Denver: Give each other space. Open communication is always a winner. Make each other laugh and love each other unconditionally. Always have a song ready to cheer each other up.
CELEBRITY CHEF COUPLE LEON AND ROBYN MARNEY
Leon and Robyn Marney whip up love in the kitchen and outside.
What’s cooking when you’re not in the kitchen?
Robyn: We try our best to balance our personal and professional lives. I enjoy running, and Leon enjoys cycling. We both love nature, the beach,
and forests. It is important to take time out when needed to rest and enjoy other pleasures in life.
Where did you meet?
Robyn: I worked at the CTICC in October 2003, Leon then joined the team in August 2004 and when he saw me, it was love at first sight. We were work colleagues and then became friends. I played hard to get for a few months, and in February 2005, we started dating. Leon proposed to me on Valentines Day in 2006, and we got married in 2007.
Valentine’s day, yay or nay?
Leon: Yay! Most Valentines days we are working. Those special days are the busiest for the hospitality industry – it’s peak season.
MUSICIAN AMY JONES AND HER MANAGER/HUSBAND LEE WILLCOCK
Amy Jones and Lee Willcock’s love story began at church, courtesy of Lee’s dad, Barry. They are now
celebrating one year of marriage and welcomed their newborn son, Asher Barry Willcock.
What’s your secret to balancing work and personal life?
Amy: We have a way of seeing them as separate, but we somehow never think about how to manage the two apart. I believe placing God in the centre of both makes a massive difference.
Valentine’s day, yay or nay?
Amy: Every day for us is like a Valentine’s Day. We believe that you shouldn’t just use one day to celebrate and honour the love of your life, but to make it a daily intentional thing.
What’s your secret to keeping the spark alive?
Lee: What keeps the flame burning is knowing that you’ve married your best friend who sees not just one part, but all parts of you and still chooses to love, honour, appreciate and to show love – not just say it. That’s very important.
COMEDIAN LUNGA TSHUKA AND PR, BRAND MANAGER SASKIA RILEY
Mixing business with pleasure definitely worked out for Lunga Tshuka and Saskia Riley.
What roles do you play within the entertainment industry?
Lunga: As a comedian, I bring humour into everything I do. Laughter is healing, and I use it to connect with people and inspire growth. Together, we combine my storytelling and humour with Saskia’s expertise in strategy and intuitive coaching to make our work both impactful and relatable.
Saskia: We’re in the entertainment and empowerment industry, but at the heart of what we do is guiding individuals on their healing journeys.
How did it all start?
Saskia: We met seven years ago when I had just started my entrepreneurship journey. Lunga was actually one of my first clients – I was helping him as a comedian.
Lunga: Yeah, we built a great professional relationship, but over time, we realised there was something deeper between us. We started as friends, we both confessed that this connection
It was like our souls had finally found each other.
felt like so much more. It was like our souls had finally found each other. Saskia swore she’d never date a client, let alone someone in the entertainment industry. But, as they say, the heart wants what it wants.
Valentine’s day, yay or nay?
Lunga: Yay-ish… it’s about leading from the heart and making sure the people around us –including ourselves – feel special and appreciated. Valentine’s Day is less about the grand gestures and more about intentional moments. IB
FINDING HIS VOICE: The rise of
Robin Pieters
ROBIN PIETERS’ JOURNEY TO STARDOM IS AS INSPIRING AS IT IS HEARTBREAKING. THE CAPE TOWN NATIVE ROSE TO FAME ON THE VOICE SA AND BUILT A DECADE-LONG CAREER, SHARING STAGES WITH GLOBAL ICONS. YET, BEHIND HIS ELECTRIFYING PERFORMANCES LIES A STORY OF RESILIENCE. FROM LOSING HIS MOTHER – WHOSE FUNERAL SPARKED HIS LOVE FOR SINGING – TO HIS SISTER’S BATTLE WITH CANCER, ROBIN HAS TURNED PAIN INTO PURPOSE. NOW, HE REFLECTS ON SUCCESS, SACRIFICE, AND SELF-DISCOVERY.
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
The seed of Robin Pieters’ musical journey was sown in 2009 when he embarked on formal music studies. However, a more personal event initially sparked his love for singing: performing at his mother’s funeral. “At 17, I discovered that I could sing,” he recalls reflectively. “That was the moment my passion ignited – at my mom’s funeral.”
This poignant experience shaped not only his career, but also the person he has become. “At that time, I dealt with what I needed to. These days, when I look back, I’m still in shock, reflecting on all the obstacles I faced as a teenager, including losing my mom.”
Raised by a single mother who tirelessly fought to provide for three children, Robin witnessed her pain and resilience. “I saw her trauma and the sacrifices she made. Our family faced a heavy blow when my sister was diagnosed with cancer at 21. She survived, but
a few years later, my mom was diagnosed and didn’t make it.”
Robin also candidly shares the hardships of watching his mother endure an abusive relationship. “It pushed me to become a better man and set meaningful goals for myself. Sadly, my mom never got to see me achieve them before her passing.”
At the moment, Robin is embarking on a journey of self-discovery. “I recently completed a fully packaged documentary around my life, which will air on a popular streaming site this year… be prepared to be gobsmacked by a few revelations packed with a rollercoaster of emotions as I dive into my life story.”
Now 34 years old, Robin reflects on a decade in the music industry, where childhood pain fuelled his remarkable career. Yet, success has come with its own share of struggles. “It’s been hard, but if you put in the hard work, it becomes worth it,” he says. “I would say it’s challenging, but you must put in a lot of hard work to succeed.” His words resonate with aspiring musicians everywhere, echoing the age-old adage that diligence is the cornerstone of success.
People are not withequipped the music industry when they enter those competitions.
Throughout his career, Robin has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Loukmaan Adams, Emo Adams, Claire Phillips, Sasha Lee Davids, and Danny K, and has opened for
international stars like Tamia and Tevin Campbell. These collaborations have helped him hone his skills and thrust him into the spotlight, yet he remains grounded, aware that staying relevant in a constantly evolving industry demands continuous effort.
When asked about reality shows like Idols SA and The Voice SA, he draws from his own experience as a finalist on the inaugural season of The Voice South Africa in 2016. Although he didn’t clinch the title, he left the show as a fan favourite. He views these shows as massive platforms, but cautions that contestants often lack industry expertise.
“People are not equipped with the music industry when they enter those competitions,” he says. “That’s why you need to fight to keep a spot and remain relevant.” His words offer a duality of appreciation and a warning for participants navigating the challenging waters of the music business.
Despite his successful career, he doesn’t cite a single role model as his inspiration. “I don’t perceive a role model... I’ve always tried to be my own person,” he says. This autonomy is reflected in his distinctive stage presence and musical expression, making his performances uniquely his own.
He also shares his passion for cooking, revealing, “If I weren’t a musician, I probably would have been a chef because I love cooking.” This hidden talent adds another layer to his multifaceted persona, indicating that creativity flows through him in various forms.
Robin is currently taking a sabbatical in the US and he plans to return in July 2025 after celebrating a decade of music.
“I’m taking a break from music just to focus on my mental health and wellbeing. I usually go to the USA to visit my friends, but this time, the visit will be longer with more time on reflecting and taking charge of my life.
As he continues to navigate the ebbs and flows of his career, he playfully hints at a potential love interest, saying “There might be” when asked about having a Valentine. This glimpse into his personal life reveals that, despite the demands of his career, he still values the joys of love and connection. IB

But it wasn’t until Jarrad returned from a European tour in 2012 that the chemistry ignited. A long-distance relationship ensued, filled with frequent flights, heartfelt conversations, and a shared dream of a future together. After seven years of love and patience, they tied the knot amidst the tumult of the pandemic in 2020, showcasing their commitment even in challenging times.
Building a life, one project at a time

Celebrating the everyday
With demanding schedules, the Ricketts make it a priority to nurture their connection. Whether through quiet dinners sans phones or sweet surprises like bouquets or favourite chocolates, they seize opportunities to celebrate even the smallest of moments. “We celebrate everything, big or small,” Jarrad affirms. “It’s these little gestures that remind us we’re in this together.”
Anchored in faith
Their marriage is anchored in a shared faith, providing a solid foundation for their journey together. “Our biggest foundation is God,” Kim-Lee declares. “He keeps us grounded, and we place everything in His hands.”
This faith serves as a guiding light, helping them navigate both challenges and triumphs with gratitude.
Friendship first
At the core of their love lies an enduring friendship.
The Ricketts have cultivated a life that allows them to flourish both as individuals and as a couple, surrounded by a supportive circle of friends. “Our biggest blessing is our friendship,” they affirm. “At the end of the day, it’s not about the industry or what people say. It’s about us, growing old together and building a life we love.” IB

This latest escapade is another chapter in their travel diary, one filled with exhilarating experiences and genuine moments of joy. From exploring the bright lights of New York City to strolling along the picturesque beaches of Cape Town, Grandma Lynn and Kairo have shared countless unforgettable adventures together. “We always have fun together,” expresses Kairo, the daughter of South African music icons DJ Zinhle and the late rapper AKA. Under Glammy’s expert guidance, as Lynn is affectionately known to friends, family, and fans, each journey is transformed into an unforgettable experience.
Whether they’re immersed in eager conversations about their destinations or engaging in lighthearted in-flight games, the laughter between them is contagious.
For Kairo, travelling with her grandmother is a unique joy. “She always knows what’s best,” shares the kid influencer. “Even when I wouldn’t have chosen to go somewhere myself, I always end up enjoying it with Glammy.”
Istanbul bound
The two’s Istanbul adventure had been months in the making. Lynn created a special Cultural, History, and Food Passport for them to fill as they explored the city together. Kairo, excited about the journey, had watched numerous YouTube videos to ignite her anticipation.
Istanbul holds a special place for Lynn, too. Her late son, Kiernan, always felt a deep connection to the city, and she was eager to experience the city through Kairo’s eyes. “He’d video call me from Istanbul, sharing its magic with me,” Lynn recalls. “Now, I want to relive those moments with Kairo.”
As they wandered through Istanbul’s vibrant streets, Lynn hoped Kairo would soak up the city’s unique blend of ancient history and modern charm. “I wanted Kairo to experience its vibrant energy, from the architecture to the food and the people,” adds Lynn. “It’s a place full of stories and adventures, and I think it’s a great way for her to see how different parts of the world come together.”
In-flight fun
Even the most seasoned adult travellers can attest that long-haul flights can be a test of endurance. But for Kairo, Grandma Lynn’s expert
planning and preparation ensured that their journey was filled with fun activities, games, and entertainment, making even the longest flights a breeze.
“I like to play games on my iPad, read, and sometimes draw. Glammy and I also watch movies or talk about what we’re going to do when we land,” says Kairo. But the real magic happens when Glammy breaks out her legendary playlist –a collection of old-school jams with modern bops. Seriously, where can we stream the Fun Forbes Playlist, please?!
To ensure comfort on their journey, they both prioritise comfort over style. Think relaxed attire, cosy accessories, and Kairo’s trusty Squishmallow neck pillow – the ultimate travel sidekick.
Turkish delights
As they touch down, Kairo is quick to dive into the local sweets, a delicious ritual signalling the start of their adventures. “I like to explore the new place and see what’s around us,” she adds.
Turkish Airlines, their chosen airline, garners high praise from Lynn for its exceptional service and child-friendly options. “The top-class hospitality is unmatched,” she says, expressing her eagerness to travel with the airline in the future. With features like the Turkish Airlines Kids Club, the travel experience has been tailor-made for family fun, with engaging activities and a menu that delights young palates. IB

If you had to take a social media break, what would you do with all that extra time?
Well, first, I’d take lots of naps. As a creative, my mind is always busy brainstorming, and I come up with my best ideas at night. Additionally, I enjoy diving into a comedy TikTok series before bed. I also love nature and the outdoors, so spending some time offline to go hiking and exploring would be incredibly enjoyable for me.
What’s the weirdest or funniest DM you’ve ever received?
Someone once told me I look like Aquaman. Must be the curls! I’ve felt like a superhero ever since.
What’s one thing you can’t live without (besides your phone)?
Probably Wi-Fi. I like being able to Google absolutely anything and everything – like, “Why are cats scared of cucumbers?” Yes, that’s an actual thing!
If you could relive any day in your life, which one would it be and why?
The day my fiancé proposed... I’d like to relive it. To be honest, I didn’t even hear what he said – I was too busy shouting “Oh my word!” when he went down on one knee. He proposed overlooking the ocean in Thailand, and in that moment, I felt so blessed, thankful, and close to God.

If you had to take a social media break, what would you do with all that extra time?
Honestly, I’d still be doing what I’m doing, even if it wasn’t being recorded or photographed. The saying goes, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” With that being said, social media is a part of who I am. What you see is what you get, you know?
What’s the weirdest or funniest DM you’ve ever received?
I haven’t received any weird DMs. As a family guy, I feel that the people who follow me know that I don’t entertain anything inappropriate. You know, respectfully.
What’s one thing you can’t live without (besides your phone)?
I can definitely live without my phone. My wife, on the other hand, I can’t live without. She’s my backbone, my everything, and more. And, of course, our little princess, Qurrah. My wife, daughter, and I are always together, so when we’re together, I’m at peace. That makes sense, right?
If you could relive any day in your life, which one would it be and why?
It was probably the day our daughter was born. It was the day I became a father, and it’s an experience that’s hard to put into words. It’s something that’s unexplainable, and words won’t do it justice.

If you had to take a social media break, what would you do with all that extra time?
If I had to take a social media break, I’d focus on my research and deepen my knowledge in cancer studies. As a master’s student in molecular and cell biology, there’s always something new to learn. I’d also travel more, exploring new cultures and disconnecting in nature.
What’s the weirdest or funniest DM you’ve ever received?
The funniest DM I’ve ever received was when I got a throat infection, and someone asked if it was part of my degree to test out the oesophageal cancer cells we’re researching on myself. I had to explain that, thankfully, that’s not part of the curriculum!
What’s one thing you can’t live without (besides your phone)?
Probably my prayer journal. It’s a key part of my morning routine, and helps me stay grounded. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to reflect on what I’m grateful for and seek guidance as I navigate through my day.
If you could relive any day in your life, which one would it be and why?
The day I got accepted into my master’s programme. I have a very deep passion for cancer research and hope to be a part of a significant breakthrough in targeted therapies.

If I had to take a social media break, I’d probably focus most of my time playing padel and burying myself in my Masters dissertation research.
What’s the weirdest or funniest DM you’ve ever received?
The most interesting DM I’ve received was probably from someone who claimed to be a prophet and informed me that she had dreamt that we were meant to be married.
What’s one thing you can’t live without (besides your phone)?
My garage couch! If I’m not busy, at work, doing research, performing or at church, I am usually on my pink couch in my garage. It centres me and is such a safe space.
If you could relive any day in your life, which one would it be and why?
It would probably be the last day I spoke to my grandmother before she passed away, so that I could tell her about how I planned to change the world with the tools she had equipped me with.

WE SPENT FIVE MINUTES WITH SOUTH AFRICA’S DOUBLE INTERNATIONAL EMMY-NOMINATED AND MULTIPLE AWARD-WINNING DUO.
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
What inspires your comedy?
I enjoy making people laugh, so that’s why I do it. The subject matter, a mix of the most silly and frivolous often combined with hard hitting serious social commentary, is a product of my interest in making South Africa a better place, while laughing.
What’s the worst joke you’ve ever told, and how did that end?
The great thing about bad jokes is you never need to repeat them, so let’s stick with the cheesiest one. How do accountants say goodbye?
“Calculata!”
What’s the funniest moment you’ve experienced?
I’ve had so many hilarious moments, but a highlight from this tour was when my school
teacher puppet, Mr Dixon, asked a man what he did, and he said he’s a coal miner, who sells coal to Eskom. We then found out his wife works for Eskom. It’s like comedy gold.
Where do you get your humour from? Mom or Dad?
I probably get mine from my mom, having grown up with her more.
What’s the biggest platform you’ve performed on?
The Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, which is the biggest comedy festival on earth, is one I’ve been fortunate enough to perform at.
If you weren’t a comedian, what would you be?
I had planned on becoming a drama therapist for about two weeks, or a lawyer - a weird combination, I know. IB

THE UNFORESEEN JOURNEY CAN BE THE MOST EXCITING ONE, CAPTIVATING YOU TO THE POINT WHERE YEARS FLY BY, YET BRINGING IMMENSE JOY. A JOY THAT KNOWS NO BOUNDS, NOT EVEN RETIREMENT. FOR SANDY GODWIN, A CHANCE ENCOUNTER WITH CERAMICS SPARKED A HOBBY THAT BLOSSOMED INTO A LIFELONG PASSION.

Ajourney can start in many ways. Tell us about your creative art journey.
My journey in ceramics began as a hobby years ago, but my true passion developed when I started working on the wheel. As I worked, I found myself becoming increasingly immersed in the process, and I fell deeply in love with it. My goal is to create beautiful, elegant forms that can serve as a canvas for intricate patterns.
Art is expressed in many different ways. What are your preferred materials and techniques when creating?
While I enjoy working with various materials, my preferred clay is porcelain clay, which I appreciate for its whiteness and translucency. I also use different fabrics to decorate my pieces, making them more visually appealing and distinctive. Ultimately, that’s what art is all about.
You were a finalist for the SA Clay Awards. What did that accolade
mean to you, both personally and professionally?
Having a piece selected for the Clay Awards was a great honour. I hope this recognition will bring international exposure to ceramics in South Africa. I eagerly anticipate the new opportunities, collaborations, and the doors that will open as a result.
Ceramics are increasingly relevant in contemporary art. Can you share your perspective on their role and significance in this context?
In recent years, the role of contemporary ceramics has evolved, and they are no longer viewed solely as functional vessels. Through my work, I aim to celebrate my cultural heritage by incorporating African textiles and traditions, while also conveying a sense of elegance in my ceramic forms.
What advice would you offer to aspiring ceramists or artists seeking to establish themselves in the industry? Perseverance and patience are the cornerstones
of success in ceramics. With so many techniques and styles to explore, it’s essential to work through them to discover your unique voice. Once you’ve found it, hold on to it.
Are there any particular ceramists whose work you admire or enjoy?
To name a few, I admire the work of Sasha Wardell, Sara Moorhouse, and Angela Mellor. IB
Paul’s Courtnaé BREAKING BARRIERS: RISE TO BREAKDANCING STARDOM
WITH HER MESMERISING MOVES AND UNWAVERING PASSION, COURTNAÉ PAUL IS NOT ONLY REDEFINING THE SPORT OF BREAKDANCING, BUT ALSO PAVING THE WAY FOR A NEW GENERATION OF SA BREAKERS. AND SHE’S CONFIDENT THAT THE FUTURE OF BREAKING IN SA HAS NEVER LOOKED BRIGHTER.
BY BYRON LUKAS
In a vibrant display of talent and resilience, South Africa’s Courtnaé Paul has emerged as a shining star in the electrifying world of breakdancing. Breakdancing, often referred to as breaking, b-boying for men, and b-girling for women, is a dynamic dance form known for its impressive footwork and acrobatic, athletic moves.
An accidental journey into the sport transformed into a passion that has seen the awardwinning Paul conquer stages both locally and
internationally. However, her journey is far from over.
“Not only do I have to navigate a male-dominated space, but we also struggle to create safe spaces and sustainable opportunities for our community,” says Courtnaé.
How did your breakdancing journey start?
So, I kinda stumbled into dancing by accident. Growing up, I was all about sports, but dance
Macu for Red Bull Content Pool
wasn’t really on my radar. I went to a local church and the dance group caught my attention. I started messing around, combining my gymnastics skills with dance moves. Next thing I knew, I was hooked on breaking!
What was your OMG! This is ‘it’ moment?
It wasn’t until I saw some Missy Elliott music videos that I realised breaking was a thing – a style, a culture, a community. I started to expose myself more to the dance and that’s when everything clicked, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it.
What has been the most memorable moment in your career?
I ranked as the highest African at the inaugural Olympic Qualifier Series, after that, I took home my second African title at the AfroBreak International Championship, and if all that wasn’t enough, I’ve also been named one of 10 newsmakers for the year by GSports, which is just insane to me.
Have you faced any challenges as a B-Girl?
Being a woman of colour in SA is tough enough, but add being a B-Girl to the mix, and it gets even more complicated. Not only do I have to navigate a male-dominated space, but we also struggle to create safe spaces and sustainable opportunities for our community. But I’ve learned to rise above it by understanding the breaking landscape in Africa and realising I need to be the change I want to see. It’s mentally and physically exhausting, but if we want to build a thriving breaking community and industry, we need to lay the foundations every day, no matter what challenges come our way.
Are you impressed by how breakdancing is growing in Africa?
Blown away! There’s this energy on the continent right now, and I think it’s partly because of platforms like Red Bull BC One and Breaking’s Olympic debut. It’s like a whole new level of excitement and exposure. We’ve got the talent, the passion, and the drive. It’s just a matter of time before African breakers take the world stage by storm!
Has breakdancing influenced the culture in South Africa?
Breaking culture is still relatively niche in SA,
but its impact is everywhere – from stages to fashion to ad campaigns. The thing is, breaking hasn’t gotten the respect it deserves. People are quick to take inspiration from it, but they don’t give it the same props as, say, rap. Hip-hop culture is massive, but we need to keep pushing for breaking to get its due – not just as a gamechanger, but also as a powerful tool for guiding our youth.
Any advice for young dancers who aspire to follow in your footsteps?
Don’t wait for the perfect time, the perfect studio or the perfect song – it will never come. Start today, do it your way, and know that fear and failure are important elements of the journey.
2025! Any personal and professional goals?
It is already gearing up to be massive! I’ve got loads of competition dates on the cards, which is exciting. But to be honest, I’ve never been in this position before, so I’m kinda winging it and trying to make the best decisions as I go. Beyond competing, my goals are simple: stay happy, stay healthy, and keep pushing limits. I want to show the world what women in Sports and Hip Hop a re capable of - that we too can have and achieve it all.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind in the world of breakdancing?
I hope to leave behind a spirit and legacy of resilience, that even when all the cards are stacked against you, you can come out on the other side. No journey will be perfect, but I want to show that taking small steps every day can lead to a massive impact in the places and hearts you least expect. IB

INGREDIENTS Aqua, Dimethicone, Isopropyl Palmitate, Ethylhexyl Cocoate, Isododecane, Isopropyl Myristate, Urea, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Glycerin, Pentylene Glycol, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate, Sodium Lactate, Dipentaerythrityl Hexacaprylate / Hexacaprate, Gluconolactone, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil, Calendula Officinalis Extract, Butyrospermum Parkii Oil, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Glycine Soja Oil, Isostearyl Isostearate, Bisabolol, Octyldodecyl PCA, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Tocopherol, Sodium PCA, Sodium Hyaluronate, Lactic Acid, Stearalkonium Hectorite, Propylene Carbonate. SAFETY ASSESSMENT Bio-Oil® Body Lotion has undergone a safety assessment by a qualified toxicologist and has been classified as safe for its intended use by adults, including pregnant and lactating women, and children over three years old. DRY SKIN CLINICAL TRIAL Trial centre Complife Italia S.r.l, Italy. Objective A clinical evaluation to test the efficacy of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion in improving skin moisturisation. Sample Subjects: 30 healthy female participants with Fitzpatrick skin types II-V and clinically showing dry / very dry skin at the level of the outer lower legs. Test site: test product applied to an outer, lower leg of all subjects. Age of participants: 25–65. Methodology Split body, evaluator-blinded, randomised and controlled clinical-instrumental study. Participants washed their legs with soap to induce dry skin over a 7-day period. Baseline clinical and instrumental evaluations were taken. Bio-Oil® Body Lotion was applied twice daily for 28 days to the assigned lower lateral leg, the opposite leg remained untreated. Clinical assessments and instrumental evaluations were conducted on days 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 14, 21 and 28. The control untreated site was also evaluated at all time points. Subjects were clinically graded for dryness (on a scale from 0–5) by a trained visual evaluator. Quantitative measurement of skin hydration was by Corneometer. Quantitative measurement of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) as an indicator of barrier function, was by Tewameter. Additionally, a self-assessment questionnaire was completed on days 8 and 14. Result Compared to the untreated area, treatment with Bio-Oil® Body Lotion resulted in a statistically significant improvement in clinical grading of dryness, Tewameter and Corneometer measurements, from as early as day 1, and at all time points. For clinical grading of dryness, statistically significant improvements were evident in 96.7% of participants from day 14 onwards, almost double the improvement noted at day 1. After 28 days of use, 100% of participants showed a significant increase in skin moisturisation, with the extent of the improvement almost 4 times that at day 1. Similarly, after 28 days of use 100% of participants showed a significant decrease in TEWL, with the extent of the improvement more than double that at day 1. These findings are supported by the results of the self-assessment questionnaire. DRY SKIN USER TRIAL Trial centre Ayton Global Research, United Kingdom. Objective To assess the performance of Bio Body Lotion as a body moisturiser. Sample Subjects: 119 female participants in good health. Age of participants: 25–65. Methodology A 2-week, single-placement, in-home user trial. Participants were instructed to apply product twice daily, morning and evening. Massage into skin until fully absorbed. Three short questionnaires were completed: the first after initial application, the second after 12 hours, and the third after 2 weeks of using the product. Result Application: 95% of participants agreed that ‘the product is lighter than any moisturiser they have used before’. 93% of participants agreed that ‘the product spreads more easily than any moisturiser they have used before’. Absorption: 82% of participants agreed that ‘the product absorbs more easily than any moisturiser they have used before’. 75% of participants agreed that ‘the product absorbs quicker than any moisturiser they have used before’. 74% of participants agreed that ‘the product leaves no greasy residue after application’. 86% of participants agreed that ‘after applying the product they were able to get dressed immediately’. Hydration: 93% of participants agreed that ‘the product leaves skin feeling immediately moisturised’. 92% of the participants agreed that ‘after applying the product their skin feels smooth and silky’. 90% of participants agreed that ‘their skin felt moisturised the entire day’ and 91% agreed that ‘their skin feels smooth and silky the entire day’. 92% of participants agreed that ‘their skin looks better than it did at the beginning of the 2-week period’. Overall: 73% of participants agreed that ‘the product is better than any moisturiser they have used before’. SENSITIVE SKIN TEST Trial centre Complife Italia S.r.l, Italy. Objective To assess the potential of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion to cause skin irritation. Sample Subjects: 25 participants; 3 male and 22 female, all with sensitive skin according to lactic acid stinging test. Age of participants: 18–70. Methodology Controlled study. Two areas were evaluated: area to which a negative control was applied (demineralised water) and an area to which Bio Body Lotion was applied. Test products were applied to the back region of participants, in contact with the skin surface, for a period of 48 hours using a Finn Chamber®. Skin reactions were evaluated under the supervision of a dermatologist, to assess primary skin irritation at 15 minutes, 1 hour and 24 hours after patch removal. Skin reactions were rated on a scale from 0–4 (with 0 being no erythema, oedema, or other types of skin irritation, and 4 being serious erythema and oedema, indicating dark red appearance and extended swelling beyond the application area). Result The skin tolerability of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion was deemed ‘non-irritating’. NON-COMEDOGENIC TEST Trial centre Complife Italia S.r.l, Italy. Objective To assess the comedogenic potential of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion. Sample Subjects: 20 participants; 14 female and 6 male of varying ethnicities with acne prone skin. Age of participants: 18–65. Methodology Controlled study. The product was applied on a disk of filter paper to the upper back region of participants. Patches were left in place for 48 to 72 hours, removed and applied again. A total of 12 patches were applied for 4 consecutive weeks. Three areas were evaluated by comparing a negative control (demineralised water), the test product (Bio-Oil® Body Lotion) and a positive control (lanolin alcohol, a known comedogenic product). Skin reactions were clinically evaluated under the supervision of a dermatologist 15 minutes after the removal of each patch to compare the presence of comedones before and after each product application. Result Bio-Oil® Body Lotion was found to be non-comedogenic. The area to which Bio Body Lotion was applied showed no significant difference to the negative control area. The positive control induced acne. VISCOSITY STUDY Trial centre Union Swiss, South Africa. Objective An internal study to assess the dynamic viscosity of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion compared to similar moisturising products. Sample Comparison of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion to 13 moisturising products manufactured by 10 global brands with an established history in moisturisation. Methodology Dynamic viscosity was read using an Anton Paar RheoLab QC rheometer, using spindle CC 39, speed: 200 rpm at 20˚C, shear rate: 155. Result Bio-Oil® Body Lotion was found to have a 7.5 times lower dynamic viscosity than the average of the competitor products (94 mPa.s vs. 707 mPa.s respectively), indicating a thinner, lighter fluid that’s more easily and rapidly absorbed. APPLICATION How to apply Bio-Oil® Body Lotion should be massaged in a circular motion on the body until fully absorbed. It is recommended that Bio-Oil® Body Lotion be applied twice daily, morning and evening. Bio-Oil® Body Lotion should not be applied to an open wound or broken skin. It is intended for topical cosmetic application only. Shake before use Bio-Oil® Body Lotion is an emulsion in which the water and oil are very lightly bound together. So lightly, that when left standing some of the oils rise to the surface of the product forming a thin layer. By gently shaking the product before use, the oil layer disperses back into the lotion. Layer formation can take anywhere from three days to three weeks and is dependent on factors such as temperature, how vigorously and how frequently the bottle has been shaken. The mere act of using the product daily, turning the bottle upside down when dispensing, is more than sufficient to ensure that this oil layer does not form. If an oil layer has formed and the product is dispensed without shaking, a clear oil mixture may flow from the bottle. This is not a consumer safety risk. How long to use Bio-Oil® Body Lotion’s clinical trial has been performed over a four-week period, allowing the performance of the product to be assessed over time. Statistical analysis shows a significant improvement in the appearance of the skinafter as little as 24 hours and that this improvement is maintained for
‘Beauty and ARE
self-love SYNONYMOUS’
AS WE STEP INTO FEBRUARY, IT’S CLEAR THAT BEAUTY ENCOMPASSES MORE THAN JUST SURFACE-LEVEL AESTHETICS. WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT DOWN WITH ANIEN BOTHA, OWNER AND EDITOR OF BEAUTYSOUTHAFRICA.COM, WHO SHARED VALUABLE INSIGHTS ON BEAUTY TRICKS AND TIPS, HELPING US CULTIVATE A DEEPER CONNECTION WITH OURSELVES WHILE MAKING INFORMED CHOICES ABOUT THE RIGHT PRODUCTS FOR OUR NEEDS.
BY TEMO MPODI
As both a beauty influencer and beauty editor, how do you balance promoting products with your editorial responsibility to provide unbiased reviews?
As a beauty editor, I have the privilege of testing a wide range of products and collaborating with numerous exceptional brands. Since I own my platform (www.beautysouthafrica.com), I have the autonomy to decide which brands and products are featured, and which are not. Integrity is the cornerstone of our writing, and we only showcase products that we genuinely trust and believe in.
How do you best merge beauty and love in your life?
There has been so much talk around self-love and self-care in recent years, and while it’s become somewhat of a cliché, the core message remains true. You can love others around you so much better if you love yourself, first. For me, beauty and self-love are synonymous – a bubble bath, face mask, fresh coat of nail polish or a beautiful blow-dry are some of the loveliest ways to treat yourself.
With so many beauty trends constantly evolving, how do you decide which ones are worth embracing?
For me, trends are not there to be followed blindly; instead, they are there to be interpreted.
Your skin changes throughout the year, so your
regime needs to be adaptable.
The beauty of a trend is that two people can embrace it in completely unique ways to suit their individual styles. When it comes to makeup or hair, any trend is worth embracing if it appeals to you, and makes you feel confident.
You have to be a little more careful when it comes
to skincare trends, because there is a lot of inaccurate info going viral online. If you see a skincare trend that interests you, ask an expert about its safety and efficacy before trying it yourself.
How do you ensure your skincare routine stays effective with the changing seasons or your evolving skin needs?
Your skin changes throughout the year, so your regime needs to be adaptable. I tend to use the same type of serums all year round (usually a vitamin C serum in the morning and a vitamin A serum at night), as they offer effective antioxidant protection and anti-ageing benefits, regardless of the weather. I then swap out my lighter summer moisturiser for a richer formula during autumn and winter and add a moisturising mask to my regime to combat winter dehydration.
What’s the most common beauty myth you’ve encountered in your career?
That you only need to use sun protection in summer, and that it’s only necessary if you have very fair skin that burns easily.
Its Valentines Month. Give us your secret to kissable lips?
Exfoliation and moisturisation. Gently scrub your lips with a sugar lip scrub once or twice a week to remove dry skin cells. Afterwards, apply a nourishing lip balm to put moisture back into your skin. Always keep a good quality lip balm on hand to apply as soon as your lips start to feel dry.
Top beauty tip for 2025?
Take a holistic approach to beauty. Everything in our lives contribute to our appearance and the rate at which we age; from what we eat and drink, to the pollution we’re exposed to, our sleeping habits, lifestyle factors and exercise. The long-term benefits are undeniable. IB

The beauty of sleep
Embrace the power of a beauty sleep as the cornerstone of your skincare regimen. At night, the skin generally goes through a natural renewal process, repairing and regenerating cells whilst resting. Which is why it is important to prioritise good, quality sleep. A good night’s sleep will help your skin appear younger and revitalised. To minimise fine lines that can lead to wrinkles, consider using silk pillowcases while you sleep.
Repeat after me: Exercise, nutrition and hydration
All three are vital and cannot be overstated. They help normalise your metabolism, promote cell turnover, and alleviate skincare concerns like
dehydration and fine lines. By prioritising these habits, you’ll not only improve your skin from the inside out, but you’ll also feel great and notice the results.
Retinol 101
Introduce retinol into your nighttime skincare routine to stimulate cell turnover. This helps improve collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production in your skin, resulting in a plumper, more hydrated, and youthful appearance. Retinol promotes cell renewal, smooths the skin, and combats acne. However, some individuals may experience irritation, such as redness and flaking, when using retinol. To minimise risks, apply retinol at night and wear sunscreen during the day to protect your skin. It’s essential to consult a doctor before using retinol, as it’s not advisable to use it without a proper prescription.
The C word
Use a vitamin C serum every morning, as it’s a powerful antioxidant that brightens your skin and helps fade pigmentation while stimulating collagen production. It also improves hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, dryness, and uneven skin tone.
To get the most out of your vitamin C serum, seek professional help in choosing the right product for your skin type. Regular facials and grooming with a professional can also help keep your skin looking fresh and revitalised, leading to a healthier and improved appearance.
I recommend having facials every three months, as this allows your skin to breathe and avoids over-stimulation.
Sunny side up
Lastly, protect your skin from the damaging effects of sun rays by incorporating a broadspectrum sunscreen into your daily skincare routine. Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of your face and body, including your neck, ears, and hands, regardless of the weather conditions. Choose lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas with an SPF of 30 or higher to shield against both UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. Remember, sun protection is the ultimate defence against photoaging and is essential for maintaining youthful, healthy-looking skin. IB
African print BRAND STRUCTURED FOR LUXE AN
CREATIVE MINDS ARE CONSTANTLY EMERGING, ENSURING THAT FASHION AND STYLE REMAIN FOREVER FRESH AND EXCITING. WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT DOWN WITH MZUKISI MBANE, FOUNDER OF IMPRINT ZA, TO DELVE INTO THE STORY BEHIND HIS INNOVATIVE BRAND.
BY TEMO MPODI
Imprint ZA seamlessly blends luxury and culture. Take us through its establishment. When I started the brand, I really had clear intentions on what I wanted to achieve. I wanted to create prints that celebrate our African stories, diversity and heritage. I wanted to tell African stories in a way that shows the world how rich Africa is and how we can be great players in the international fashion luxury stage. Basically, changing the perception that people have when it comes to African culture and heritage.
I love that. Which celebrities have you enjoyed working with?
The brand works with many diverse celebrities and I believe that’s what makes people fall even more in love with the brand. The fact that inclusivity is not an afterthought, but something that is embedded in the brand’s DNA. We are privileged to have worked with the late mam’ Connie Chiume, Leleti Khumalo, Simphiwe Dana, Pabi Moloi etc. We also create garments for
leading men like Kwenzo Ngcobo, Sandile Mahlangu and more.
On the pageantry scene, have you had the opportunity to work with any notable titleholders? I have and continue to work with Shudufhazo Musida, Ndavi Nokeri and Zozibini Tunzi.
Have you ever considered collaborating with another local or international designer?
I think about collaborations a lot. Locally, I’m more interested with artists that are not in fashion. I believe that gives the project more weight, gets it a bigger reach and allows us to be able to tap into spaces and explore creativity from a different light. Internationally, a collaboration with Rihanna or Kanye West (Ye) is a dream.
You heard it here first, people. Let’s shift gears. How do you foster a narrative of exclusivity and inclusivity through your brand?
My brand is designed and structured for luxe, and that reflects on the pricing model, the quality of the product and the exclusivity of the prints. However, I’m very aware of the fact that we also have a huge market that aspires to be part of the brand and desires accessible products. So, I developed something called affordable range. A limited range of products that come
I wanted to tell African stories in a way that shows the world how rich Africa is…
out occasionally for people who want to buy something still limited and exclusive, but at an accessible price.
How do you invest in high-quality materials that enhance the design’s durability while reinforcing a luxe cultural status?
I’ve always invested in making sure that we source the best quality fabrics even with the limitations that we have in sourcing fabrics in the country. Performing fabric durability tests on new experimental fabrics, working with the best fabric printers in the country to ensure that our products are premium quality from concept to consumption.
Meticulous finishes matter. Who else plays a vital role in ensuring the end product is of high quality?
I have an amazing team that makes sure that the print concepts and designs are executed, tested, and presented, with invaluable support from our graphics team. My production team also guarantees that the final product is as perfect as the original concept/design. The general team makes sure our space is well presented, clean and orders get to our clients on time.
What are you most looking forward to in the future?
To see our new furniture and homeware venture come to life, while contributing to the brand’s expansion and elevation. I’m also excited about our collaboration with Proudly SA, which aims to educate local consumers and foster national pride in buying, wearing, and consuming locally made products. IB

WEIGHTLIFTING: IT’S NOT JUST FOR BODYBUILDERS ANYMORE! THIS GAMECHANGING EXERCISE IS NOW A STAPLE FOR WOMEN OF ALL AGES, HELPING THEM BUILD STRENGTH, BOOST METABOLISM, AND FEEL LIKE TOTAL ROCKSTARS.
BY CHARIS TORRANCE
Weightlifting is no longer exclusive to bodybuilders and pro athletes. Today, it’s a staple for women of all ages, helping them build strength, boost metabolism, and feel empowered. We spoke with Carol Behane, a trainer and former actress, to explore the benefits of weightlifting for women.
Why weightlifting is a game-changer for women
“Weightlifting helps with muscle growth and performance, metabolism activation, and mental health,” Carol explains. “It’s also excellent for improving bone, joint, and overall strength, which is critical for women as they get older. It even improves balance and stability, helping to prevent falls.”
Importantly, weightlifting targets abdominal fat – a major risk factor for chronic diseases. “By reducing abdominal fat, weightlifting lowers the risk of heart attacks, diabetes, and arthritis,” Carol adds.
As women age, maintaining flexibility, balance, and strength becomes even more critical. Weightlifting not only helps prevent falls by improving stability, but it also enhances mobility, flexibility, and sleep quality.
“Weightlifting offers incredible benefits for ageing women,” Carol explains. “It improves overall physical health and ensures a higher quality of life.”
Lifting weights
will make you strong and toned, not bulky.
There’s no age limit to starting weightlifting Carol assures. “Women in their 40s can absolutely begin weight training, but it’s important to start slowly with small weights and gradually increase the weight over time. Paying extra attention to form is key, and having a professional guide you can help minimise the risk of injuries.”
The myths and misconceptions
So why don’t more women lift weights? Well, one of the most persistent myths around weightlifting is that it will make women “bulky.” Carol dispels this idea immediately: “That’s not true. Women don’t have the same levels of testosterone as men, so it’s harder for us to build that kind of muscle mass. Lifting weights will make you strong and toned, not bulky.”
Carol also clarifies what happens when you stop lifting weights. “If you stop, your muscles might reduce in size over time, but they won’t turn into fat.”
Essential exercises for beginners
If you’re new to weightlifting, Carol recommends starting with foundational exercises to build strength and confidence.
“For beginners, I recommend squats (starting with bodyweight), glute bridges or hip thrusts, bicep curls, shoulder presses, and push-ups,” she says. “These exercises help prepare your body for more advanced routines.”
Consistency is key. “Aim to lift weights two to three times per week. You’ll start to see results in as little as four to five weeks, but for some women, it may take three months or longer. Don’t get discouraged. Keep pushing yourself, and you’ll see progress.” IB

FERMENTED FOODS ARE THE GUT-FRIENDLY SUPERSTARS YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE.
BY CHARIS TORRANCE
Fermented foods like kimchi and kefir might not be the first things that come to mind when you think of healthy foods, but they’re actually nutritional powerhouses. From tangy kimchi to fizzy kombucha, these funky foods are packed with benefits that your body will thank you for – once you get past the smell.
What are fermented foods, anyway?
Fermentation is a process as old as time – well, at least as old as the ancient Egyptians. It involves breaking down food components (like sugars) using bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms. This magical microbial transformation is responsible for everything from bread to beer to yoghurt.
Think of fermentation as a kind of foodie alchemy: it preserves your favourite foods, enhances their flavour, and creates beneficial probiotics that work wonders for your gut health. And in an age when your digestive system takes a hit from stress, processed foods, and that second takeaway in a week, your gut could use a bit of TLC.
Why your gut deserves the spotlight
You’ve probably heard the phrase “gut health” thrown around by every wellness influencer worth their Himalayan salt. But there’s good reason for the hype. Your gut isn’t just where digestion happens; it’s the epicentre of your overall health.
Inside your digestive tract lives a bustling metropolis of bacteria, known as your gut microbiome. When it’s in balance, these good bacteria help you absorb nutrients, keep your immune system strong, and even influence your mood. Yes, you read that right –a happy gut can mean a happier you, thanks to the gut-brain connection. Who knew your intestines were such multitaskers?
If you’re new to the world of fermentation, start slow. Probiotics can be powerful, and going all-in with three servings of kimchi and a litre of kombucha might leave your digestive system feeling... overwhelmed. Begin with a small portion daily, and let your gut adjust.
Also, read labels! Some commercial fermented foods are pasteurised, which kills off those precious probiotics. Look for terms like “live cultures” or “unpasteurised” to ensure you’re getting the real deal. IB
THE FERMENTED A-LIST:
Yoghurt: The OG of fermented foods, but make sure it’s natural and full of live cultures.
Kefir: A fermented milk drink that’s tangy, creamy, and full of probiotics.
Sauerkraut: Fermented cabbage that’s salty, crunchy, and seriously underrated.
Kimchi: Sauerkraut’s spicy Korean cousin, with garlic, ginger, and a kick of chilli.
Kombucha: A fizzy fermented tea that feels like a health tonic in a bottle.
Miso: A savoury paste made from fermented soybeans that’s perfect in soups.
Tempeh: Another fermented soybean product, but firmer and a great meat alternative.
Pickles: Not the vinegardrenched kind – look for naturally fermented pickles for all the probiotic perks.
Heart break kid
THINK A ‘BROKEN HEART’ IS JUST A ROMANTIC CLICHÉ? THINK AGAIN. BROKEN HEART SYNDROME IS A REAL MEDICAL CONDITION THAT CAN MIMIC A HEART ATTACK – AND IT’S MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK.
BY CHARIS TORRANCE
We’ve all heard the phrase “broken heart” tossed around in songs, movies, and romantic novels. It’s usually poetic, dramatic, and often exaggerated. But did you know a broken heart can actually, medically, happen? Yes, your heart can literally feel so overwhelmed that it acts as if it’s having a heart attack. It’s called Broken Heart Syndrome – or if you want to get fancy, Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (try saying that three times fast).
So, what exactly is broken heart syndrome, and should you be worried that watching Titanic for the 100th time could land you in the hospital? Let’s take a look at the science, symptoms, and solutions – all without making you feel like you’re studying for a biology exam.
What is broken heart syndrome?
Broken heart syndrome is a real medical condition where extreme emotional or physical stress causes the heart to malfunction temporarily. It mimics a heart attack but without the artery blockage. The left ventricle (the main pumping chamber) suddenly weakens and takes on a strange balloon-like shape – hence the Japanese term “Takotsubo”, which refers to an octopus trap shaped like the stressed-out heart.
According to Dr Pieter van Wyk, a cardiologist practising at Netcare Sunninghill and Netcare Sunward Park hospitals, “While we are all familiar with the notion of ‘dying of a broken heart’, which is commonly referred to in many literary works, broken heart syndrome is in actual fact a condition that has been well researched and documented in the medical world.”
He adds, “However, while in fictitious terms it most often refers to heartbreak resulting from romantic betrayal, rejection or loss – from a medical perspective stress cardiomyopathy is most often triggered by intense physical or emotional stress resulting from various stressors. This typically includes intense emotional and/or physical trauma such as being diagnosed with a serious medical condition, a motor vehicle accident or the news of a family member passing away.”
How do you know your heart’s had enough?
The symptoms of broken heart syndrome are eerily similar to those of a heart attack.
We’re talking:
• Chest pain (the dramatic clutch-yourheart kind you see in films)
• Shortness of breath
• Rapid heartbeat
• Feeling faint or dizzy
It’s enough to make anyone panic, which is why people often rush to the hospital thinking they’re having a classic heart attack. The good news? Unlike a heart attack, broken heart syndrome doesn’t usually involve permanent damage to the heart. It’s temporary and often reversible with proper treatment.
Dr Van Wyk explains, “In most cases the condition involves a balloon-like effect occurring in the apex, the lower end of the heart, and for this
reason, it is often also referred to as apical ballooning syndrome. People in whom the condition manifests itself generally experience sudden, intense chest pain and shortness of breath, which are similar symptoms to those experienced during a heart attack. However, stress cardiomyopathy is in fact a completely different condition.”
Who’s most at risk?
While anyone can experience broken heart syndrome, research indicates that the condition is most prevalent in older people between the ages of 62 and 75, with more than 80% of patients
being women. Hormones – particularly oestrogen – are thought to play a role, which might explain why women are more susceptible.
Dr Van Wyk highlights that the condition can also be linked to specific traumatic events. He recalls working in Christchurch, New Zealand, when 21 women presented with stress cardiomyopathy after the devastating earthquake in February 2011. “While the heart condition they suffered did not result in any fatalities and was transient in nature in most of the cases, the condition re-occurred at least three times in one of the patients,” he notes.
So, can you die from it?
Not to sound dramatic, but yes, in rare cases, broken heart syndrome can be fatal. Dr Van Wyk cautions that during the acute phase, stress cardiomyopathy seems to be just as severe as a heart attack and can lead to serious heart problems. “It may, for example, lead to further heart rhythm problems that cause the heart to beat much faster or slower than normal. It can also result in heart failure, i.e. the heart underperforms in pumping enough blood through the body. The worst-case scenario is that the heart failure could result in death. However, if the acute phase is survived then almost every person with stress cardiomyopathy recovers completely within one to four weeks,” he says.
With the right care, most people recover fully, but Dr Van Wyk emphasises the importance of seeking medical attention for proper testing to rule out coronary artery disease and determine the exact cause of symptoms. IB

Dorpie IN THE CITY
LOCATED HIGH ON THE SLOPES OF SIGNAL HILL, DORP IS A LUXURIOUS HIDDEN RETREAT OFFERING STUNNING VIEWS, ECLECTIC ROOMS, AND A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE. A PERFECT ESCAPE WHERE CHARM AND SOPHISTICATION MEET.
BY MILOU STAUB
Irecently had the privilege of experiencing Dorp, Cape Town’s hidden hillside haven, and let me tell you; this secret is far too magnificent to keep under wraps any longer. Perched high on the slopes of Signal Hill in the vibrant Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, Dorp is the epitome of understated luxury, blending effortlessly into the natural beauty of its surroundings. Following its recent summer relaunch, I was invited to step behind the doors of what’s long been regarded as Cape Town’s bestkept secret; and I can now see why.
A perfect marriage of nostalgia and luxury
Dorp, meaning “village” in Afrikaans, is a perfect marriage of nostalgia and modern luxury, carefully integrated into its breathtaking landscape. From the outside, the whitewashed Georgian façade gives little away, but as soon as you step inside, you’re transported into a world of sophisticated charm and elegance. The hotel is a sprawling labyrinth of rooms, suites, studios, and cottages set within beautifully manicured gardens, peaceful courtyards, and hidden terraces. Every corner reveals something
extraordinary; whimsical staircases, intimate nooks, and thoughtfully curated details that add to the hotel’s enchanting allure.
One of the hotel’s most captivating features is its rooftop terrace, which boasts a Victorianinspired glasshouse. The 360-degree views are truly unparalleled; spanning Signal Hill, Table Mountain, the harbour, the Atlantic Ocean, and the city below. As dusk falls and the city lights twinkle, you’ll feel as though you’re floating above Cape Town in an oasis of tranquillity. The combination of Georgian elegance and quirky eccentricity throughout the space creates a luxurious yet relaxed ambiance that feels both grand and effortlessly comfortable.
The heart of Dorp: The Salon
At the heart of Dorp is The Salon, a stunning double-volume space that serves as the hotel’s lounge, library, dining room, and café. The Salon is an oasis of plush sofas, Persian rugs, towering potted palms, and shelves filled with artful “objets d’art”. The large Georgian windows frame spectacular views of Table Mountain and the city, allowing natural light to flood the
room and create an atmosphere of warmth and creativity. It’s the ideal space to unwind with a book, meet friends for a coffee, or simply indulge in the serene surroundings. And let’s not forget the cheeky gold stencilled words on the wall: Decency. Originality. Respect. Psycho (DORP) – a playful touch that hints at the hotel’s spirit of fun and individuality.
Dorp’s staff is another highlight, embodying warmth, hospitality, and a genuine sense of care.
The atmosphere is one of effortless sophistication, where you feel not just welcomed, but truly at home. It’s clear that the team here is more like family, creating a dynamic of warmth and friendly banter that makes the entire experience feel personalised and intimate.
The rooms at Dorp are a luxurious retreat in themselves. Each room, suite, and studio are uniquely decorated, with a blend of eclectic décor and timeless elegance. The attention to detail is impeccable, from the carefully layered fabrics on the bed to the bespoke Dorp toiletries infused with a signature fragrance. With 27 rooms in the main wing and 15 more in the Onderdorp area below, there’s something for every taste, whether
you’re here for a romantic getaway or a group event. The hotel also offers three shared plunge pools, providing the perfect setting for sun-drenched relaxation.
Culinary delights at Dorp
The culinary experience at Dorp is as exceptional as the setting. The open kitchen spills out into a gorgeous patio, where meals are served in the Salon or al fresco in the lush courtyard. The menu is a delightful celebration of comfort food with a refined twist. The famous rotisserie roast chicken, the decadent twice-baked cheese soufflé, and the indulgent Milk Tart are just a few of the standout dishes that have become classics at Dorp since its opening.
In essence, Dorp is not just a place to stay; it’s a destination in its own right. With its unique blend of luxury, charm, and creativity, it’s a haven you’ll never want to leave. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape or a longer stay, Dorp offers an experience like no other. But be warned: once you check in, you might just find yourself never wanting to check out. IB

WHERE SAVANNAH SUNSETS MEET STARRY SKIES, KRUGER NATIONAL PARK BECKONS. DISCOVER THE UNTAMED BEAUTY OF AFRICA’S ICONIC WILDERNESS, WHERE ADVENTURE WHISPERS SECRETS TO THE SOUL.
Being able to take in the vast open spaces, the lush vegetation bordering the rushing rivers, and the breathtaking animals – including lions, leopards, elephants, and giraffes – is just one of the many reasons people from around the world regard Kruger National Park as a bucket list destination.
“Going on safari can be such a cathartic experience. But, the best part about immersing yourself fully in the splendour of the African wilderness is that it can help you to discover new passions and interests, or to really,” says Miguel Farinha, Hotel Manager of Kruger Gate Hotel. If you’re ready to immerse yourself in a brandnew world and discover the wonders of nature, then it’s time to dust off your books, lace up your boots, grab your binoculars, and try these engaging activities on your next visit to Kruger National Park.
01
Capture each stunning moment
Kruger National Park, with its incredibly diverse wildlife and dramatic landscapes, offers endless opportunities for photographers of all levels to capture stunning images. Rise before dawn to photograph the morning rush hour of birds, or wait until late afternoon to capture larger animals, which tend to rest during the heat of the day.
02
Take in the beauty of the birds
Want to see the modern-day descendants of dinosaurs? Then bird-watching is for you. Birds evolved from theropods, the same group that includes the T-Rex. More importantly, bird-watching offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and experience a calming and restorative experience.
When you close your eyes and listen to the sounds of nature around you, you’ll likely hear the songs of the many birds surrounding you in the bush. From the vibrant Plum Coloured Starling and Lilac Breasted Roller to the endangered Cape Vulture and Saddle Billed Stork, and the rare white-breasted Cuckooshrike, Kruger National Park’s 11 bird and game viewing hides offer something for both seasoned and amateur birdwatchers to enjoy.
Set your eyes on the stars
Kruger National Park’s vast bush lands and majestic wildlife are awe-inspiring, but wonder can also be found by gazing up at the night sky. Unobstructed by city lights and industrial pollution, the park offers a breathtakingly clear view of the stars. According to National Geographic, astrotourism has gained significant momentum over the past decade, with 2024 expected to be a standout year.
Kruger National Park provides a prime location to witness spectacular celestial events, including the best auroras in 20 years – as recently showcased by the stunning Aurora Australis display over Cape Town – as well as the annual Perseid meteor shower and the convergence of Saturn with the moon.
04
Enrich your mind and gain a deeper appreciation of Kruger National Park
A safari vacation in Kruger National Park is not only aesthetically rewarding, but also offers a unique opportunity to stimulate your mind with a hands-on education on the intricate ecosystems of the wild. Take advantage of this chance to learn about the habitats of the park’s remarkable animals, as well as its diverse flora and fauna.
Kruger National Park is divided into five distinct zones, each with its own unique vegetation and climate, attracting a wide range of wildlife. By exploring these different zones, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the park’s ecology and foster a greater appreciation for environmental conservation.
05
Track down the wildlife
Fancy yourself a detective? If you’re looking for a more intentional way to encounter the animals of Kruger National Park, beyond mere chance, then the ancient art of tracking is for you. Join an experienced master tracker on a journey through the park, searching for signs of spoor – footprints, scents, or broken foliage – across sandy riverbeds and muddy shorelines. By tracking these awe-inspiring animals on foot, you’ll gain insight into their behaviour and learn to identify the unique signs they leave behind.
06
Sharing a passion for holidaying in the bush
Staying at a hotel near Kruger National Park increases the likelihood of meeting fellow bush enthusiasts. “Guests often share stories about their daily sightings in the park, exchanging excitement over spotting a leopard or a pride of lions basking in the sun,” says Farinha. “Embarking on a game drive at dawn, then watching the sun’s golden light illuminate the park, fosters a special camaraderie among strangers. Witnessing nature’s majesty unfold before us creates a unique bond between humans.”
Holidaying alongside like-minded people and sharing new experiences at the same destination can be the catalyst for forming new connections and friendships. “After a game drive, guests often return to the hotel and share stories of their adventures with one another over dinner under the African sky,” adds Farinha. “Having others share in your excitement, whether it’s spotting wild dogs or honey badgers, undoubtedly enhances the overall experience.” IB
A wild RETREAT
MAPUTO NATIONAL PARK AND PONTA MEMBENE ECO LODGE OFFER A PERFECT MIX OF ADVENTURE AND RELAXATION, FROM THRILLING SAFARIS TO SERENE BEACHES AND STUNNING SUNSETS. A TRUE ESCAPE INTO MOZAMBIQUE’S NATURAL BEAUTY.
BY MILOU STAUB
When I first arrived at Maputo National Park (MNP), I was immediately struck by the diversity and beauty of the landscapes: swamps, coastal dunes, lush forests, and endless grasslands stretching to the horizon. This wasn’t just any park; it felt like a hidden gem, and I was about to embark on a world of adventure and conservation.
MNP has been around since 1960, and it’s clear that a lot of love and effort has gone into preserving its treasures. The wildlife here is nothing short of amazing: elephants, giraffes, zebras, and numerous bird species that I could barely keep track of. It felt like being in a living, breathing wildlife documentary. The conservation projects underway, such as restoring dunes and mangroves, are really paying off. What stood out the most, however, was the commitment to community.
During my time at MNP, I learned from Gavin Shaw, the head of operations and development, that the park is dedicated not just to wildlife conservation, but also to involving local communities. They’re working on introducing more dining options to cater to local tastes, and the exciting Futi Corridor project, which will connect MNP with South Africa’s Tembe Elephant Park, will further promote wildlife movement across borders. It’s inspiring to see
how they balance conservation with community involvement.
The highlight of my visit was the 4x4 safari. Driving through the park’s expansive plains, I spotted elephants grazing, zebras trotting across the grasslands, and giraffes towering above the trees. It was surreal to see these majestic creatures up close, set against such stunning landscapes. For those who aren’t keen on selfdriving, the park offers guided tours; both on land and by sea. I opted for a guided boat trip and had the incredible experience of snorkelling with whale sharks and dolphins. The thrill of seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was one of the most exhilarating moments of my trip. I also had the chance to spot nesting tortoises along the beach.
One of the best parts of staying here was the sunset views from the cocktail hour deck.
After an action-packed day in the park, I headed to Ponta Membene Eco Lodge, tucked away in the coastal forest. This lodge is an absolute gem. The accommodations range from beautifully decorated and spacious chalets to campsites, each blending seamlessly with the environment. I loved the simplicity and the comfort; it felt like I was truly immersed in nature, without sacrificing any of the comforts I appreciate.
One of the best parts of staying here was the sunset views from the cocktail hour deck. As the sun dipped below the horizon, I felt a sense of peace and gratitude for being in such a beautiful place. The beach was incredible, too; during low tide, I swam in the calm waters, and when high tide brought in some wild waves, I embraced the adventure and had an absolute blast.
It’s clear that Maputo National Park and the award-winning Ponta Membene Eco-Lodge are not just about tourism; they’re about making a real impact on conservation and community development. MNP has plans to gain World Heritage status within the next five years, and its goal to become self-sustaining by 2032 is ambitious and inspiring. I left feeling not only deeply connected to the natural beauty of Mozambique but also hopeful for the future of its wildlife and communities. IB

A South African in Ohio COMING TO AMERICA…
MORNE MEYER OR DR M AS HE IS KNOWN, TRADED HIS BRAAIS FOR BBQS AND CAPE TOWN FOR COLUMBUS, OHIO.
NAME: Morne Meyer
BIRTHPLACE: Cape Town
CURRENT CITY: Columbus, Ohio
DURATION: 8 years
OCCUPATION: Church Minister
From the Mother City to the Midwest, Morne Meyer’s life has been a wild ride of cultural contrasts. We caught up with the charismatic expat to chat all things SA in the States.
Do you ever think about moving back to SA?
My faith has been a constant source of strength. When I reflect on the fact that I’m breaking ceilings and inspiring young boys and girls who look like me to see that hope and achievement are possible, it motivates me to keep going. Despite the challenges and shortcomings, I
face, I know I can’t turn back now.
What’s the biggest culture shock you’ve experienced?
America’s culture feels very private and closedoff compared to what I’m used to. The strength of their economy seems to have diminished the sense of community, which is something I still struggle to adjust to.
What’s one thing you’ll never get used to in the US?
The lack of a strong sense of community.
What’s the first thing you tell people about South Africa?
South Africa is incredibly diverse, and our resilience is unmatched. We have a great sense of humour and an ability to overcome challenges and move forward.
Name five items you wish someone would bring you from South Africa.
• Handy Andy
• Biltong and droëwors
• Dried fruit
• Mrs Balls Chutney
• Brown onion soup
What’s the most American thing you’ve adopted?
The ease and convenience of ready-made everything! I’ve also embraced the food culture of buying ready-made meals instead of cooking or simply ordering it online. I seldom cook these days. I love the comfort and easy access.
Have you ever had to explain what “braai” is?
Yes! They call it BBQ, but I explain that it’s so much more than that. We’re meat lovers, and a braai usually involves lamb chops and three to four other types of meat. And yes, braai broodjies…
What’s the most random thing you were asked about South Africa?
Do you have lions?
What South African words or phrases do you still use?
I still say “shame” a lot in conversations, and people here don’t always understand why I’m saying it! “Hi shame” IB

KURAL VISTA
ON THE ICONIC PALM JUMEIRAH IN DUBAI, KURAL VISTA IS A MASTERCLASS IN LUXURY LIVING, SEAMLESSLY BLENDING SOPHISTICATED DESIGN, STUNNING VISTAS, AND UNPARALLELED OPULENCE, REDEFINING THE ULTIMATE RESIDENTIAL EXPERIENCE.
Looking eastwards towards the Dubai skyline from the G Frond of the iconic Palm Jumeirah, this villa, conceived by SAOTA for developer Alpago Properties, in collaboration with Executive Architects CK Architecture Interiors (also the project’s interior designers and contractors) exudes sophisticated understatement in its unassuming silhouette.
A blank canvas
The brief – to create a home that would maximise the allowable area and embody a sense of refined luxury – was open to interpretation from a design standpoint. This allowed the team freedom to interpret the notion of residential luxury freely in the context of this exclusive enclave.
Not being limited by restrictions on the design itself, due to there being no designated end user, offered an opportunity to create something architectural and expressive while remaining in keeping with the prestige of the neighbourhood.
Blurring boundaries
The team drew on the striking waterfront site –harnessing its considerable views – to design a villa that merges with the urban landscape and, in signature SAOTA fashion, seamlessly integrates indoors and out.
This was in fact a primary goal of the project – to introduce the landscaping and views in various ways, so they would become part of the inhabitants’ daily experience. The initial building concept was cued by the site’s proximity to the water – in the form of a stacked structure designed to mimic travertine eroded over time (a reference to the developer’s Turkish roots) or the texture of coral (an allusion to the villa’s island location).
closer inspection this bulk is broken up to some degree by a deliberate fracturing of the form –with a combination of light and dark materials, vertical layering via expressed slab edges, metallic and matte surfaces, transparent and perforated detailing and solid forms balanced by negative spaces. These contrasting elements introduce the idea of porousness present throughout the design.
A study on contrast
On first impression, the street-facing side presents a solid façade (an intentional design decision prompted by the need for privacy). On
This theme is extended, and expanded on within, the sense of solidity on the street giving way to openness on the sea-facing side, where the spaces ultimately become hyper transparent. By carving out of the mass of the structure, the architects have created double-volume covered terraces and voids to inspire a sense of curiosity – through these, the landscape is visually woven through the space. Once you step through the door on the ground floor, this sense of permeability becomes clearly apparent in social spaces centred on a triple-volume central landscaped courtyard that allows in abundant light.
Designing for flow
Spaced over four levels, the villa is designed to optimise the purpose of each floor. The ground and first floors house living space and bedrooms with easy access onto the outdoor terrace; the basement level contains a garage and spa; while the bar, entertainment area and pool occupy the rooftop level and benefit from the view.
Working with a relatively small footprint, the challenge of ensuring a sense of expansiveness was overcome with an open-plan design that
flows internally – not only creating visual connectivity (vertically and laterally) between spaces and floors, but also with the generous outdoor living areas. To achieve this, the physical and material boundaries between indoor and outdoor living were blurred. With no clear definition between the formal lounge and the terrace, the living space opens out, with doors slotting seamlessly into wall cavities. The ultimate effect a connection from the living space to the pool and landscaping, and in turn to the sea and skyline beyond.
Outdoor living and sustainability
The natural material palette reinforces this connection with the outdoors – large-format unfilled vein-cut travertine tiles, wood, and earthtoned marble are luxurious but not ostentatious and link tonally to the landscape. Deliberately pared-back and quietly sophisticated in the public spaces to complement the sculptural character of the building, the materials are more opulent in the private zones to imbue these with an enhanced sense of luxury.
The outdoor areas – being so intricately linked to the indoors – were designed and optimised for liveability. Pergolas and terraces filter and moderate light on the rooftop (necessary in this climate) while internal courtyards and deep
overhangs contribute to passive cooling and facilitate comfortable outdoor living, the setting-sensitive design allowing its occupants to fully enjoy the views and the elements throughout. IB

TOOLS FOR INVESTMENT Leveraging AI
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS TRANSFORMING INVESTMENT STRATEGIES, FRAUD DETECTION, AND FINANCIAL ANALYSIS, OFFERING UNPARALLELED INSIGHTS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH IN THE EVER-EVOLVING WORLD OF FINANCE.
BY SENWELO TSIE
Artificial Intelligence has significantly impacted various aspects of our lives, including the world of finance. Now more than ever, it is crucial that we are aware of AI’s capabilities and harness its potential in our daily work. As finance professionals, we must learn to appreciate and leverage AI’s ability to enhance our processes. Similarly, investors must understand the AI tools that can facilitate informed trading and analysis decisions.
Financial advisory
AI has enabled the development of technologydriven financial advisors, such as Robo-Advisers. Similar to human advisors, Robo-Advisers utilise client information, including risk tolerance, age, investment preferences (e.g., stocks and bonds), financial situation, and goals, to create a tailored investment strategy. Through trend analysis, RoboAdvisers manage investments to optimise returns. Although Robo-Advisory services incur fees, they are generally more affordable than traditional management.
Trading
High-frequency trading involves the rapid buying and selling of shares. This type of trading utilises computers with high-speed processors, enabling the completion of millions of trades in mere seconds. AI has significantly enhanced the speed of high-frequency trading due to its ability to rapidly process large datasets. This capability allows for the calculation of stock
price fluctuations and real-time monitoring of market trends. As a result, traders can swiftly respond to price variations and capitalise on profitable opportunities. Furthermore, AI tools can simultaneously monitor multiple markets, thereby optimising arbitrage trading. By identifying price discrepancies across different markets, AI enables traders to seize advantageous opportunities.
Research
Investing inherently involves risk, and there’s always a probability of winning or losing. However, AI tools have proven to be effective in financial market analysis and research. By leveraging predictive analysis and collecting historical data, AI helps traders anticipate stock market behaviour, make informed decisions, mitigate risks, and achieve positive returns.
Fraud detection
Advances in technology have led to an increase in hacking incidents, resulting in significant financial losses for companies and individuals. However, AI has evolved to counter these fraudulent activities, enabling the detection of irregularities. Through Anomaly Detection, AI algorithms identify unusual patterns in financial transactions, flagging potential fraud. Additionally, AI-powered Identity Verification tools utilise biometrics and other techniques to verify user identities, reducing the risk of unauthorised access. Effective fraud protection is crucial, and it has successfully prevented losses for both customers and organisations. IB

With risks lurking around every corner, from financial uncertainties to natural disasters, effective risk management has become essential for corporate survival. It requires meticulous attention and a commitment to objectives.
Risk management is the process of identifying, assessing, and controlling threats that could significantly affect an organisation’s capital, earnings, or efficiency. It covers legal liabilities, technological issues, strategic errors, accidents, and natural disasters.
To address these challenges, many businesses turn to enterprise risk management (ERM), a holistic approach highlighting the interconnectedness of risks.
The
imperative of legal
risk navigation
A pressing aspect of risk management is navigating legal risk: recognising, evaluating, and mitigating potential liabilities.
Compliance with data privacy regulations is crucial, requiring businesses to handle customer information responsibly.
Implementing privacy policies and conducting compliance checks are necessary to avoid penalties and preserve reputation. Understanding South Africa’s regulatory landscape is critical. Organisations must adhere to laws, including the Consumer Protection Act, Environmental Laws, and guidelines from the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA).
Non-compliance can lead to dire consequences.
A stark reminder of the past
Last year’s tragic collapse of an apartment building in George in the Western Cape, which resulted in the loss of 34 lives, serves as a haunting reminder of why stringent regulatory oversight and risk management are imperative, particularly in the construction sector. This incident underscored the need for unwavering commitment to safety standards and robust risk management practices.
According to BDO South Africa Incorporated, adherence to industry best practices is vital in preventing such calamities, highlighting the serious repercussions of neglecting compliance.
The dual-edged sword of technology
While new technology has ushered in greater data analytics, communication, and operational efficiency capabilities, it has also intensified the risks posed by increasingly sophisticated threat actors.
However, cybercriminals, coupled with statesponsored adversaries, have adapted to exploit weaknesses in digital infrastructures with everevolving methods. The integration of artificial intelligence into this landscape has elevated the severity of cyber-attacks, calling for businesses to stay vigilant in the digital realm.
In response, organisations must adopt cuttingedge measures to stay one step ahead of potential threats.
This includes investing in advanced cybersecurity technologies, enhancing employee training on compliance and risk awareness, and developing a culture that prioritises safety and vigilance. IB
AI transforms the industrial wholesale LANDSCAPE TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY
THE INTEGRATION OF AI IN THE WHOLESALE SECTOR IS DRIVING A SIGNIFICANT SHIFT TOWARDS MORE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES, RESHAPING OPERATIONS AND REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINTS.
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
In an era where sustainability has become not just desirable but essential, the industrial wholesale sector is undergoing a significant transformation. Beyond regulatory requirements and consumer demand, AI is redefining operations.
AI is dramatically changing how wholesale distributors operate. Companies are utilising AI algorithms to predict demand fluctuations more accurately, reducing overproduction and waste. This is particularly crucial in industries like food distribution.
According to PwC’s 2025 AI Business Predictions, this technological revolution is not merely redefining operations, but is also positioning AI as a crucial ally in the global push for sustainability. By addressing pressing environmental challenges, AI offers businesses a strategic opportunity to innovate and achieve sustainability goals.
One prominent example is the implementation of AI-driven analytics that enable firms to develop more precise forecasting models. AIdriven analytics refine forecasting, reducing excess inventory and waste.
Moreover, AI enhances operational efficiencies by optimising transportation routes and logistics. AI optimises logistics by analysing traffic, weather, and delivery schedules. This minimisation of fuel consumption during transport significantly decreases carbon footprints, highlighting the dual impact of AI: cost reduction and increased sustainability.
The push towards sustainable practices also encompasses product lifecycles. By using AI to assess the life stages of products, wholesale companies can determine when to phase out certain items or optimise production processes to lessen environmental impacts. This proactive strategy positions companies as responsible stewards of the environment, appealing to the ethically-conscious consumers of today.
Certain companies are even leveraging AI for recycling initiatives, whereby smart sorting technologies discern materials to improve recycling rates. By efficiently managing recyclables, wholesalers not only comply with regulations, but also promote a circular economy – essential for long-term sustainability in the sector.
Businesses must cultivate a culture of sustainability through employee training and engagement. Continuous training and engagement are necessary for workers to understand the value of these technologies and their role in achieving broader sustainability objectives. This cultural shift, paired with technological advancements, promises to enact lasting changes in the industry.
As AI continues to evolve, its potential to assist in sustainability will grow, further encouraging wide-scale adoption across the industrial wholesale sector. The synergy between advanced technology and environmental responsibility is not just a passing trend; it is redefining how the industry operates, ensures profitability, and addresses ecological concerns simultaneously. EDUCATING SOUTH AFRICAN YOUTH ON Recycling
POLYCO IS EMPOWERING SOUTH AFRICA’S YOUTH TO EMBRACE RECYCLING, FOSTERING SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH INNOVATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMMES, COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, AND INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT – LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR A GREENER, WASTE-CONSCIOUS FUTURE DRIVEN BY COLLECTIVE ACTION AND RESPONSIBLE PRACTICES.
Po lyco PRO NPC is a registered Producer Responsibility Organisation dedicated to managing an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for plastic packaging in South Africa. Through its Million+ Initiative, Polyco aims to inspire South Africans to actively participate in the plastic recycling movement, making recycling an everyday habit.
The organisation’s mission is to remove plastic waste from the environment while normalising recycling across communities nationwide. It’s a simple and effective solution that everyone can contribute to, because creating a healthier, more sustainable future starts with each one of us.
Polyco: making the waste work
Polyco’s mission is to bring global best practices to South Africa by investing in plastic recycling initiatives that support social inclusion, wellbeing, and improved environmental and economic growth. Through various initiatives, the organisation has invested over R200-million into projects and achieved capacity growth of over 300 000 tons of plastic recycling through its investments in over 145 project partners. These are plastics that ordinarily would have gone into the landfill or ended up in the ocean. One of Polyco’s key drivers being the implementation of mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) from the voluntary scheme it had prior to 2021. By working closely with producers, brand owners and importers, Polyco encourages them to take responsibility for the plastic packaging they produce and put into the South African market, and working together to provide solutions for increased recycling and collection and reducing plastic waste in the environment.
Million Plus Recyclers
Polyco is committed to educating both the industry and consumers about recycling throughout South Africa. One of its successful awareness initiatives is the Million Plus Recyclers brand, which develops targeted consumer campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of plastic recycling and responsible waste management. To date, Million Plus has engaged with over 2.3 million citizens. The aim of the messaging is to change attitudes and behaviours towards plastic waste, promote the adoption of sustainable practices, and encourage separation at source as well as active participation in recycling programmes. Polyco also collaborates with educational institutions, government departments, and members to develop educational materials and programmes that provide information and practical guidance on recycling at grassroots levels and beyond. Notably, Polyco’s collaboration with the Pick n Pay School Club reached over 1.9 million learners and more than 91 000 educators in 2024.
Back to school. Back to recycling
Polyco kicked off 2025 by engaging with 35 schools across South Africa, targeting over 6 000 Grade 1 learners specifically. This initiative, now in its second year, is designed to welcome young learners to the start of their academic journey while instilling the importance of recycling from an early age. Each learner will receive a sling bag filled with practical and eco-friendly essentials, including a lunch box, a reusable water bottle, and a stationery kit comprising a ruler, pencil and eraser. Additionally, they will be equipped with Polyco’s educational resources, emphasising the critical role of recycling and
fostering environmentally conscious habits from the outset.
Polyco will continue to partner with the Pick n Pay School Club, a collaboration that has been in place since 2020. This partnership focuses on expanding education and awareness campaigns around recycling and sustainability. This year, our contribution once again includes participation in their box drive, which provides a variety of educational resources to over 2 500 schools, reaching more than 2 million learners and educators nationwide. This initiative reflects our shared commitment to empowering the next generation with the knowledge and tools necessary for a sustainable future.
Polyco is proud to be part of a collaborative effort with the Gauteng, North West, and Free State Provincial Environmental Departments to support the advancement of recycling programmes in 500 schools. This transformative initiative is designed to empower students, educators, and communities to adopt sustainable waste management practices, fostering a cleaner, greener future.
At the heart of this impactful program is a focus on separation-at-source, which will raise awareness about the detrimental impact of littering and encourage proper waste management and recycling habits across participating schools. As part of this initiative, each school will receive a comprehensive recycling station, complete with colour-coded
bins, signage, bulk bags for recyclable storage, and educational materials to support awareness and education on recycling.
In alignment with the Gauteng MEC of Environment’s Back-to-School programme, the MEC recently visited three schools in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, one of the 100 schools in this area that will receive Polyco’s support. Through this partnership, Polyco will provide essential infrastructure, including recycling stations, durable tables and desks made from recycled plastics, protective clothing, and reclaimer trolleys for the teams managing the stations. These resources are designed to help schools maintain a cleaner environment, divert waste from landfills, and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future. This initiative is a vital step towards building a culture of sustainability in South Africa. Together, we hope to inspire lifelong recycling habits in students and communities across the country.
Raising awareness of plastic waste
As a sustainability advocate, Patricia Pillay, CEO of Polyco PRO NPC, hopes to shed light on the importance of sustainability and separating waste at source through responsible waste management. She believes that every small action counts, and together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for generations to come. “It just takes one person to recycle one piece of plastic to make a difference. Everyone should be that one person,” concludes Pillay.

Fierce, Fun + Fab
if only it were that simple.
slay-slay From to
REMEMBER THAT TIME WHEN LIFE FELT LIKE IT WAS FALLING APART, LEAVING YOU IN A MILLION LITTLE PIECES? IT WAS CHAOTIC, TRAGIC, AND YET, SOMEHOW, STRANGELY BEAUTIFUL. LIKE A PHOENIX RISING FROM ITS ASHES, YOU FOUND YOURSELF REBUILDING, ONE FRAGMENT AT A TIME.
Dear Self,
Spreading yourself too thin took its toll, didn’t it? You wanted to be everything for everyone. The “go-getter” at work, the dependable friend, the accommodating family member. But then came the crash – a retrenchment, a situation that left you questioning everything – and eventually, a clinic where you were forced to confront what you’d been avoiding: yourself.
Back in the early 2000s, mental health wasn’t the open conversation it is now. Words like “depression” and “anxiety” were met with confusion or dismissal. One of your parents even scoffed, saying, “What’s that depression thing? In my day, stress didn’t even exist.” And the ever-classic, “Can’t you just smile and be happy?” Oh,
How do you explain clinical depression to someone who thinks it’s just a bad mood you can shake off with a forced grin? Their generation shoved emotions under the rug, locked them in a dark cupboard, and threw away the key. But that cycle of silence? It stops with you.
Today, in 2025, mental health is finally being validated. It’s no longer taboo to admit you’re struggling or to seek help. And you? You were brave enough to break, because on the other side of breaking is healing.
In hindsight, hitting rock bottom wasn’t the end; it was the beginning – the start of a journey back to yourself. You learned that you don’t need to be perfect or hold it all together all the time. Sometimes, it’s okay to let the pieces fall where they may. Because when you rise, you come back stronger, more resilient and beautifully flawed.
Takeaway tip: So, the next time you feel overwhelmed, remember this: it’s not a bad life; it’s just a bad day. You’ve faced the flames and risen before, and you’ll do it again.
And as you piece yourself back together, don’t forget to admire the mosaic you’ve become. Here’s to embracing the mess, the madness, and the magic.
Stay courageous, stay kind. d :-)Milou
