Editor’s Note
A NEW YEAR!
A new you!
IT’S THE BEGINNING OF 2024, WHICH USUALLY MEANS TIME TO LOOK BACK, REFLECT, AND SEE WHAT WE COULD HAVE DONE BETTER. BUT IT’S ALSO AN EXCITING TIME TO LOOK FORWARD, PLAN, AND SEE WHAT THE NEW YEAR HOLDS IN STORE FOR US. The new year is usually a time when people start making resolutions to break bad habits, create new ones, or maintain the ones we already have. At INBOUND SA, we only have one resolution we intend to keep: to feature the best stories, relevant topics, and people to inspire. In this issue, we feature the most recognisable face in sport, Motshidisi Mohono, and talk to her about her most embarrassing moment on live TV, as well as her goals in life. Standup comedian Alfred Adriaan’s London show for 2024 is sold out. He shares with us his excitement and preparation for this show. A familiar face, Michelle Garforth-Venter, has been living in Atlanta, Georgia, for years and has created quite a life for her and her
equally famous husband, Riaan “die Nutsman”. January is the month in which most people sign up for gym. Personal Trainer Siya Mashele shares some basic gym etiquette with us. It’s time to go back to work which means the brain needs to be reprogrammed for deadlines. Dr Linda Meyer tells us how to adapt to work life again. As you are making your way back home or even to the office, the editorial team of INBOUND SA wishes you a happy New Year and continued success for 2024.

THIS MONTH’S BURNING QUESTION… “Should you drink 8 glasses of water a day?” ANSWER: Researchers tried to pin down studies that might support the claim by looking through multiple scientific databases — but were unable to find evidence behind it.

Too much water, and our cells swell up from hyponatremia. Water intake depends on your body size, your activity level, the temperature and how much you’re sweating.

ONE TOO MANY
parents did not want to know me! To make matters worse, I had the biggest hangover when we landed at Heathrow and my dad insisted we go sightseeing. At least I had the number of a 16-year-old girl I met on the plane. She thought I was so cool. Chad Mclintock, Johannesburg
ROOM OF HORRORS
I was 16 when my family and I flew to Disneyland. On the plane I sat with a friend and my parents were in front of us. My friend and I shared a small bottle of champagne. Before I knew it, I had downed 14 shots of Southern Comfort! I had the time of my life. I was being very friendly to passengers I did not even know. I must have gone to the toilet because what happened next, was a blur. Air hostesses tried to knock on the door, but I would not wake up. Eventually, they broke down the door and found me face down over the toilet seat! They woke me up and I had to do the walk of shame down the aisle. My
Upon arrival at my London hotel, I had to carry my luggage up four floors as there was no working lift. The room had plenty of hot water but no cold water. The bed was unmade. The aircon was a small fan and an open window. The L-shaped room had a small TV. One could not view the TV from the bed. The more I complained, the less English the receptionist seemed to understand. Her language skills improved when she heard the word ‘police.’ When I went to look for one, my refund appeared, and I moved elsewhere. Nico Kleinhans, Cape Town
HOMELESS AT HEATHROW
We arrived at Heathrow airport to catch a flight back to South Africa. While we waited, we went to have a meal and drinks at a nearby restaurant. Suddenly, we were greeted by a huge rat strutting around us. My friend screamed, and the waiter offered us a different table and free drinks. After waiting for a few hours, airline staff informed us there would
be no flight going out that night, but only at 10am the next day. No accommodation was arranged. We received a £10 voucher for coffee and a muffin. Whilst screaming and shouting to deaf ears, we were told to leave the boarding gate area because the airport had to close. So, we were chased all the way down to the arrivals area. We slept here on benches and chairs, like homeless people in the corridors of Heathrow International Airport! We only flew out at 8pm the next day. I have never been so happy to be back home! Kgothatso Sethole, Pretoria
STUCK AT SEA
Two of my friends and I recently went on a trip to a little island in Lagos, Nigeria. Mid-way, our boat suddenly stopped. We were confused but then the boat started again and off we went. After a few minutes, the engine went silent. We were now stuck. What was even more worrying was that as per the local rules, we had to be off the water by a certain time and the clock was ticking. Eventually a boat, on its way to another destination, passed us. We waved at them to help us. The boat stopped and threw out ropes to pull us in. After a few minutes, the rescue boat ran out of petrol. Stuck again. Eventually we had to wait for another boat to pass and waved at them to help us. The new boat took over and pulled us to our destination. Marlese van Wyk, Cape Town

SHE HAS JUST BEEN AWARDED THE HOLLARD SPORTS INDUSTRY BROADCASTER OF THE YEAR AWARD. SHE SAT DOWN WITH INBOUND SA EDITOR GAVIN PRINS TO TALK ABOUT HER GOALS, THAT OX NCHÉ-MOMENT AND HER F-BOMB LIVE ON AIR…

S
he played hockey and netball at school, grew up with her parents in Katlehong on Gauteng’s East Rand and was just an ordinary teenager who thought her parents were superheroes.
Today, Motshidisi is fondly known as the ‘First Lady of rugby’, presenting huge games and interviewing sports legends in the studio. And sometimes, she can be found standing in front of a camera next to the rugby field interviewing players and coaches. Her confidence, she says, comes from good preparation and a good relationship with the team members. “When you have a good rapport with the people you work with, when you make a mistake, they will laugh about it to save face for you quickly, then you feel like you are hanging out with your brothers,” she comments. Her biggest blunder on a live broadcast, she says, was when she was still on YFM as a newsreader. “I was reading the news. So, {afterwards} I thought we were off air. I said what the f***! And we were live! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. You know when you hope nobody was listening? Everybody was listening.” She was suspended for a week, but a good lesson was learnt.
Going viral on social media is not always a good thing
But the moment that went viral on social media was when she was interviewing former Springbok Bryan Habana and was suddenly picked up by Springbok Scrum Ox Nche. “I thought, do they know that we’re live?” We are working! Why? So, when he put me down, I looked and of course it was Ox. Because you are around them so much, you start to build a real
rapport with them. You’re building friendships,” she says. But the backlash on social media shocked her. “He is like a brother to me. And then people sexualised it. We were just happy to see each other.”
Advice on getting into sports broadcasting
“Be yourself. You have to be in your element all the time. I want the person they meet in the streets to be the same person in the studio when they turn on their televisions. If you’re the bubbly person, be the bubbly person. If you’re the witty person, be the witty person. “Be prepared. It goes hand-in-hand with working hard. When people see us on air, they see the finished product. They don’t get that there is all the preparation, research, all these games that you have to watch, trying to put story lines together. When they watch, they think I’m using an auto-cue. But there is a lot of work. Even the person you are interviewing can see if you don’t know what you’re talking about. Your credibility will be gone. People want to be able to trust you. “Greet the crew. You not ever in your life going to be so big that you can’t say hello to people. Our crew knows I am a hugger.”
Her inspiration
Motshidisi counts her parents as her biggest inspiration. “I thought my mom (Maphuthi) and dad (Kenny) were superheroes when I grew up. My father had a stroke when I was in Grade 7. That moment made me realise that they weren’t superheroes but two people doing their best. Once you see your parents as human beings, the relationship is completely different. You know their capabilities have limitations.” January 2024 / INBOUNDSA 15
COVER FEATURE
When she got the job as sports presenter, her parents could not have been prouder. “Years went by, and my dad got better with his rugby knowledge. After a production, he used to call me and comment on a game,” she says. Sadly, Kenny passed away in 2019. “My mom would still call and be like ‘oooh girl, you looked so good.’”
Enroute to some significant goals
Having achieved so much in life, Motshidisi still has some serious goals, and is enroute to becoming a world-class presenter. “If people are walking around anywhere in the world saying, ‘who is your top 5 presenter? I have noticed Motshidisi Mohono from South Africa. She is bang on’. Then I know I have done what I needed to do as far as broadcasting is concerned,” she comments. But for now? “I want peace. My definition of success now starts with peace. I don’t want anyone to be in conflict with me. I don’t want to be in conflict with anybody. I just want to be happy. No matter where I live, no matter what I do or who I become after this, if I am at peace with myself, then I’ll be happy.” IB

IS ALL ABOUT FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS STANDUP COMEDIAN ALFRED ADRIAAN IS TAKING A MONTH’S BREAK FROM THE STAGE AS HE PREPARES FOR HIS EUROPEAN TOUR IN LONDON. INBOUND SA EDITOR GAVIN PRINS CAUGHT UP WITH HIM BETWEEN HIS MANY MEETINGS TO FIND OUT HOW HE PREPARES FOR SHOWS.
W
here are you showing next?
My next show is in Europe. I am well supported in London as my show is already sold out. There are some other possibilities in other parts of Europe, but we are still working on it.
How do you prepare for a show?
Very slowly. I write jokes over long periods of time. Sometimes I have a story, but I don’t have the punchline or the close for it. Then I shelve it. There are jokes in my current show that are eight years old! You sit with a joke and one day a spark flashes. I write content over many, many years. Even when I am on stage, I rewrite the jokes.
22 INBOUNDSA / January 2024
It’s all about fundamental truths. I don’t try to make something funny. It’s got to be funny. It must be things that happen.
If you were not a comedian, what job would you have?
Probably a Marketing Manager. I am a B.Com graduate and was in marketing for 10 years... I was a brand manager for a skincare company as well as a toothpaste brand. I did enjoy the job but not nearly as much as I like to do standup comedy.
You recently became a dad. Again. How has this baby changed your life? Our plan was always to have two children and we have been blessed with two kids. It’s been
fantastic. I am a little older now and it’s a bit difficult to wake up in the middle of the night.
YOUR TRAVEL YOUR STYLE!
Thank goodness for my wife (Natalie). If it was not for her, none of my travelling would be possible. She makes great sacrifices to take care of the kids while I am not there. I am a little more secure now and know what to expect. We have more time to enjoy parenting and less panic. First we were nervous. We were taking our firstborn to the hospital every time an eyelash moved (laughs). Now we’re chilled.
What was your most memorable travel experience?
EXPLORE WITH
Travelling to Johannesburg when I was 22 as an adult for the first time. My dad’s business was in the Eastern Cape where we worked, and it didn’t give us time to travel.
THE LUGGAGE COMPANY!
My parents took us on a trip to the big city. It blew my mind; culture shock and very commercial and it shifted my thinking. It motivated me to move to Joburg and has given me two different careers and a wife!
Unleash your wanderlust with the best in luggage, travel gear and business bags at The Luggage Company! Our curated selection includes top brands such as Samsonite, American Tourister and Gino De Vinci, Fenn, Bestlife, and many more.
Favourite country to visit?
I enjoy different countries for different reasons. I absolutely love Australia. I know they’re our rivals in cricket and rugby, but I enjoy it. I love Sydney and Brisbon. I also enjoy the United States and the different experiences as you go from state to state. But Australia is my number one!.
Favourite food?
My friend, have you seen me? Every food is my favourite food. People always ask what my dietary requirements are. Then I say: “knock it dead, put it on a plate, and I will eat it.”
Car?
I am not a car guy. I pay off my cars and keep them forever. My favourite car to own was a red Audi A3. All I know is, I want an electric car one day. Petrol is expensive, man!
New Year’s resolution?
I want to take care of my family and look after my health better. B

I am looking for people who are not established yet. The show is a great platform for them. It’s all fun and games, and don’t worry… we are not going to laugh at you. The difference between our show and others is that you have to sing the answer.
Why should we watch it?
Look here, if you don’t have a TV license, then you won’t get to watch it. But if you do, this show is about clean, family fun. Not the drama and soapies that we are so used to. Everyone can play along. Music has become such an important part of our lives. If you listen to music in the car and even at work, then this is the show for you.
How did you get the job?
I am mos a professional malletjie (a bit crazy). So, they asked me. IB January 2024 / INBOUNDSA 25

CHAMPIONING SOCIAL CHANGE THROUGH MUSIC IN 2013, A SMALL CULTURAL NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION LAUNCHED AN AFRICAN ONLINE MUSIC INFORMATION PORTAL DEDICATED TO THE AFRICAN MUSIC INDUSTRY. THE MUSIC IN AFRICA FOUNDATION (MIAF) STOOD ON THE CUSP OF CHANGE IN MUSIC, TECHNOLOGY, AND BUSINESS IN AFRICA, AND AS IT CELEBRATED 10 YEARS IN THE BUSINESS IN 2023, IT DID SO AS A FULLYFLEDGED PAN-AFRICAN ORGANISATION.
O
ver the past 10 years, the MIAF has responded to the African music industry with promotion, support, and development through sustainable project funding, and knowledge dissemination.
26 INBOUNDSA / January 2024
Online, its music portal (www.musicinafrica. net) serves almost half a million people every month. It is the central meeting point for African music professionals where it disseminates daily opportunities and industry updates in English and French. Every year, since 2017, the MIAF has

Supports creatives in nine Southern African countries
Since 2021, in collaboration with the GoetheInstitut and with funding from the ACP-EU Culture Programme, the MIAF has supported creatives in nine Southern African countries through the Sound Connects Fund – a robust initiative aimed at accelerating development and increasing the capacity of the cultural and creative sectors in the region. In the past five years alone, the MIAF has invested close to €10 million towards making a positive difference in the sector. When the MIAF laid out its plans for a pan-African music portal in 2013, it was met with enthusiasm from some parts, but mostly wry cynicism. “The cynicism didn’t deter us, in fact, says MIAF Executive Director Eddie Hatitye, who has led the organisation since its inception. “I wouldn’t say we have 100% achieved our goals
yet, but we have shown it is possible, and more importantly, we have set up proven models to achieve these goals.” A music producer in his own right, Hatitye’s focus falls particularly on governance and ownership.
The organisation’s most powerful tool is partnerships This focus has laid the foundations of trust for building the organisation’s most powerful tool – partnerships.
“Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration! We have been open to partnerships, we know there is always someone who can do it better and that we can go further by integrating other ideas and perspectives,” says Hatitye. “The music industry is constantly evolving,” Hatitye says. “Ten years ago, there were very few digital providers on the continent. Apple, Spotify, and the like were not available to Africans at all. Now that these services are readily available, our challenge is ensuring artists know how to effectively use them to their advantage.”

Investec Art Fair
A UNIQUE PLATFORM FOR EMERGING ARTISTS THE 2024 EDITION OF THE INVESTEC CAPE TOWN ART FAIR SEES THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN PLAY A FAR MORE SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN FOREGROUNDING THE ART FAIR’S ACTIVITIES AND ARTISTS FOR ITS LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE OF COLLECTORS AND INSTITUTIONS.
T
he curatorial theme for the 2024 edition is “Unbound” focusing on emerging and ‘unbound’ voices. As the fair’s director, Laura Vincenti puts it: “The city’s geography is an integral part of Investec Cape Town Art Fair’s success. “Cape Town is a vibrant cultural hub, with a supportive community. It is very attractive to international collectors, with the great combination of diverse, cutting-edge art and a

favourable exchange rate. “This year the fair continues its work of providing an annual platform for artists, galleries, curators, museums, cultural institutions, collectors, and art enthusiasts to connect and interact in the name of art. The fair is also becoming known for facilitating meaningful dialogue, education, and farreaching interaction around contemporary African (and global) art.”
ART
Growing a contemporary art ecosystem on the continent
Having celebrated its first decade this year, the Investec Cape Town Art Fair is now well-established as one of Cape Town’s key international attractions. The fair is strategically positioned as the leading art event on the African continent, connecting contemporary art from Africa to the markets in Europe, the US, and the rest of the world. This means that the fair offers a unique platform for emerging contemporary galleries, artists, and ideas from markets outside of the traditional centres of art power and those from the African continent, to interact on an equal footing. The 2024 edition of Investec Cape Town Art Fair will again bring together Africa’s leading galleries as well as cutting-edge galleries from Europe and the USA, offering an unparalleled opportunity to view and acquire high-quality, contemporary artworks.
Architectural and conceptual design for the fair layout
The physical layout of the fair takes advantage of fair Director Laura Vincenti’s experience and expertise as an architect. It is laid out in blocks related to the curatorial concepts and thematics of the fair and the artists being showcased, rather than in the more conventional rows of exhibiting booths. Each curated section that is of interest to visitors will therefore be in the same space for ease of access. IB
THE FAIR IS ALSO BECOMING KNOWN FOR FACILITATING MEANINGFUL DIALOGUE, EDUCATION, AND FAR REACHING INTERACTION AROUND CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART.

TRAVEL WITH
Kerishnie Naicker THE LAST COUNTRY I TRAVELLED TO WAS... INDONESIA. What I loved about it was... the relaxed,
tranquil nature of the country in general. The simplicity of locals. They appreciate life and do not complicate matters. The easy access to living an extremely active lifestyle whether yoga, swimming, surfing, biking, or more. The arts and crafts. The cost efficiency and minimal crime.
The people are... extremely humble, kind, always willing to assist. They have the highest regard for human life. The food is... healthy, nutritious, fresh and delicious with many vegetarian and vegan options.

I do not travel without: 1.
My passport, whether required or not. I’m adventurous and can be spontaneous as far as travelling is concerned. I easily change destinations on a whim.
2.
Both my cell phones, one with the resident sim and the other with my destination local sim. This is a versatile travel asset for effective communication, necessary apps including navigation, banking, being able to work, photos, videos, and more.
3.
Credit cards to purchase necessities, explore, discover and experience while travelling, as well as shopping.
4.
Sunglasses to protect my sensitive eyes against the sun and wind. As a healthcare professional I appreciate excellent quality lenses and do not want my sight to be further compromised.
5.
Luxurious walking shoes to ensure I explore and discover in comfort as well as style.

JANUARY IS THE MONTH WHERE MOST PEOPLE JOIN A GYM. BECAUSE THE SALESPEOPLE WANT TO MAKE THEIR COMMISSION OR REACH THEIR TARGET, THEY ARE SO CAUGHT UP IN SHOWING NEW MEMBERS THE FACILITY THAT THEY OMIT TO SHARE GYM ETIQUETTE. WE ASKED PERSONAL TRAINER SIYA MASHELE TO BREAK DOWN THE RULES FOR US.
1. Put your equipment back after use
There is nothing more frustrating than getting to a bench and finding someone has left their equipment there. Remember, equipment might be heavy for the next person to carry. Putting your equipment back where you found it also makes things easier for fitness instructors who spend most of their time tidying up the gym floor.
2. Sanitise machines after use
The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly forced us all to think more about the spread of germs in our everyday lives. Gyms have now made it become mandatory to sanitise equipment before and after use. This helps to reduce the spread of harmful contaminants and lowers the risk of disease transmission.
3. Do not camp on a machine
Move onto the next machine or rest somewhere else once you have finished your set. Sitting on equipment you’re not using to text, scroll social media, or take the perfect selfie is disrespectful to the people waiting for you to move on.
Prevent weight slamming by following these easy steps: •
Power/squat rack: Use a power/squat
•
Gym matting: Use a gym mat, which
rack that you can place the weight back on to, instead of dropping it on the floor.
acts as a shock absorber, so when weights are dropped the mat takes the impact instead of the floor, helping to prevent damage.
6. Stay off your phone
We all love to watch ourselves in the mirror and see how our bodies are slowly transforming. But be careful that you don’t stand in front of another person.
We understand the importance of keeping in contact with family or colleagues in cases of emergency but talking on the phone while working out is distracting. When a call comes through that you need to take, get up and sit in the lounge area to talk.
5. Throwing weights on the floor
7. Keep your opinions to yourself
4. Standing in front of a mirror
Throwing or banging your weights on the gym floor can be annoying or scary to other members, or worst-case scenario, you can hurt someone else in the process.
Many newcomers see the gym as a social space where they can advise strangers on what to eat and how to train. If you are not asked, don’t say anything. IB January 2024 / INBOUNDSA 37

ith over a decade immersed in the intricacies of algorithms and data, Lynray harboured a dream that beckoned beyond the lines of code—a dream of becoming a full-time digital nomad and travel entrepreneur. The catalyst for change was his realization that after 10 years in the tech world, the time had come to take a leap of faith. Lynray embarked on a sabbatical, bidding farewell to his corporate role and South Africa, ready to explore the world while working remotely.
Starting with Turkey, Indonesia & Taiwan
The inaugural stop on his adventure was Turkey, a country that straddles two continents, Asia and Europe, epitomized by the dynamic city of Istanbul. Undeterred by the solo nature of his journey, Lynray found himself captivated by the cultural tapestry of Turkey. From there, he continued his odyssey, venturing into Indonesia and Taiwan, each destination leaving an indelible mark on his ever-expanding worldview. Yet, the call of home drew him back
44 INBOUNDSA / January 2024
to the familiar embrace of Cape Town, where he revelled in the warmth of a South African summer. However, while Lynray’s feet may have touched base in his homeland, his heart yearned for more exploration. Bali, the magical island in Indonesia, beckoned as a potential second home. The allure of a digital nomad haven, a diverse international community, and the freedom of exploring Bali on a motorbike fuelled Lynray’s desire to make it a base for his nomadic endeavours. But amidst the global wanderlust, South Africa remained firmly entrenched in Lynray’s affections. He reminisces about the diversity, humour, and unique vibe of South Africans, and his list of things he missed during his travels is a testament to the deep connection he feels – nature, food, wine, weather, and, notably, the rich South African music scene.
Brazil and Indonesia hold a special place in his heart
Having explored 43 countries, Lynray pinpoints two nations that hold a special place in his heart – Brazil and Indonesia. Brazil, where he spent three transformative months volunteering,

and Indonesia, with its magical allure, both contributed significantly to shaping his perspective. For Lynray, the joy of travel isn’t merely about exploring new landscapes; it is a journey of selfdiscovery and personal growth. Overcoming shyness and intentionally pushing his comfort zone, each destination becomes a chapter in the evolving narrative of his life.
A thriving global travel entrepreneur
With passion emanating from every word, Lynray unveiled his end goal – to emerge as a thriving global travel entrepreneur. His vision extends beyond personal exploration; he aspires to build and foster like-minded communities, inspiring
others to embark on intentional journeys. The culmination of Lynray’s experiences and aspirations is documented in his upcoming blog, “The Travellyn Heart”. This platform promises to weave together stories, insights, and reflections, inviting readers to transcend geographical boundaries and connect on a more personal level. As the chapters of Lynray’s journey unfold, his story becomes a testament to the transformative power of travel. It is a narrative of growth, self-discovery, and the creation of a global community bound together by the shared love for exploration and discovery. IB

TOWN OF THE MONTH
PIRAN
For years, Piran, a town in Slovenia, was part of the Republic of Venice. The Republic of Venice was a sovereign state and maritime republic in parts of present-day Italy that existed for 1 100 years from 697 until 1797. After 1797, Piran bounced back and forth between Austrian, French, and Italian rule. In 1954 it became part of Yugoslavia, and then in 1991, became part of Slovenia. Until the mid-20th century, Italian was the official language of Piran. Much of the architecture and food in the town has a strong Italian influence. If you look at a map, it is just a short drive to Italy and just a stone’s throw from Venice. Some of the things you will see in the streets of Piran are art galleries and souvenir shops peddling handmade take-me-homes.

Ancient Corfu
TRANSFORMED INTO A MODERN-DAY TRAVELLER’S PARADISE IMAGES AND ARTICLE BY DEAN MCCOUBREY, LUXURY TRAVEL EDITOR THE HISTORY OF NORTHERN CORFU, OR “KERKYRA” AS LOCALS CALL IT, SERVES AS A CAPTIVATING PROLOGUE TO ITS CURRENT ALLURE.
S
teeped in ancient tales and invasions, the shores here have borne witness to the footsteps of Romans, Venetians, the French, and the British, each leaving whispers of their presence on the landscapes and palaces. Corfu Town, the arrival point on the island, is a showcase of that history. Even driving through the fortified port, the oldest stone pediment in Greece, leaves an impression. Fast forward to the present day, and you’ll observe a renaissance of sorts. The north-east side of Corfu, stretching up to the enchanting town of Kassiopi, has transformed into a modernday traveller’s paradise. While it still cradles the echoes of Odysseus’ mythical adventures and tales of ancient gods, today’s Corfu beckons luxury seekers with its pristine beaches, lavish villas, and unparalleled culinary scene.
50 INBOUNDSA / January 2024
A testament to luxury travel’s evolution
Moving from the annals of history to the pages of travelogues, today’s Kerkyra serves as a testament to luxury travel’s evolution. The beaches here aren’t just stretches of golden sand; they’re gateways to shoreline bars and restaurants that have become the hallmark of the island. Rather than tackle the precarious winding roads, families and couples can be seen hopping from bay to bay, cruising the coastline on speedboats, weaving through the Ionian blues, and guessing the owner of the quiet private sanctuaries perched on the cliffs. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, George Clooney, and even British royalty have found solace in its tranquillity. Madonna’s retreat stands as a testament to the region’s celebrity allure. Her lavish estate, nestled amidst the verdant
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL: CORFU, GREECE
landscapes and overlooking the azure waters, captures the essence of modern Eurolux. The iconic pop star’s choice of island is telling not only of its magnetic charm but also of its ability to conserve the privacy of the rich and famous.
Luxury accommodation
For accommodation, the best on the island would be Ikos Dassia of the famed Ikos Resorts brand, standing as a beacon of luxury and sophistication. 25 acres studded with pristine pools, terraced restaurants, and some beautifully modern rooms and suites, adding in Michelin-starred chefs from every corner of the world, paired with over 300 premium wines and signature cocktails; this is a differentiator for a Greek hotel.
If you’re looking for something less prescriptive and contoured, you may opt for a more authentic cliffside or coastline villa. For that, take a look at Olive Villa Rentals. If booking privately, try Cecilia Estate or PaleoPetres, both of which I have communicated with; the owners offer a sublime essence of Greece and sophistication entwined.
The narrow, serpentine roads are challenging!
The winding roads of north-east Corfu are both enchanting and treacherous. Carving through the lush landscapes, they snake their way along steep cliffs and dense olive groves, offering breathtaking views at every turn. However, this beauty comes with caution. Moped riders, lured by the scenic routes, often find the narrow, serpentine roads challenging. Cars, while offering more stability, aren’t immune to the road’s demands either. Sharp turns require deft handling, and the occasional oncoming traffic, including trucks transporting goods, can test even the most experienced driver. Caution remains paramount.
Best navigated by sea
My best suggestion would be to hire a boat. The coastline, punctuated by hidden coves and untouched beaches, is best navigated by sea. As you cruise, the freedom to dip into secluded bays allows for spontaneous snorkelling. An onboard picnic or a stop at a private cove or taverna promises the freshest seafood caught just hours before. As the day wanes, drop anchor and enjoy sundowners. Shade and sunscreen are, of course, a necessity after a day in the reflective shimmer and powerful sun.
Beaches that offer a moment of introspection
Corfu is large, which is why this article focuses on one sliver of the island, but, in my view, here lie the treasures. Beaches like the quiet, stylish nest of Agni, the cozy cove of Nissaki, the long pulsing stretch of Barbati, or the secret dock at Glyfa, don’t just offer a place to lounge; they offer moments of introspection, where the rhythms of the waves match the heartbeat of tales as old as time. Some will host super yachts 100 metres offshore, while others will fly under the radar. January 2024 / INBOUNDSA 51
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL: CORFU, GREECE
A mosaic of culture and leisure
Kassiopi, at the crown of Corfu, weaves a mosaic of culture and leisure. The town’s cobbled shopping streets resonate with a harmonious blend of the past and present. As footsteps echo off centuries-old stones, visitors wander into boutique shops offering local handicrafts, aromatic oils, and vibrant textiles. Adjacent, the open market square comes alive with waiters serving mezze, a symphony of chatter, and clinking glasses. Paleokastritsa, often referred to as the jewel of Corfu, is a testament to nature’s grandeur and Greece’s rich tapestry of history. Its name, translating to “old fortress,” hints at the Byzantine castle ruins perched above, watching over the six crystal-clear indents below. But while its scenic landscapes and historic ruins are undeniably captivating, it’s the vibrant local culture and hidden gems that truly set Paleokastritsa apart.
Instagram ‘paradise’
Just a stone’s throw away, carved into the rugged cliff face, lies a beach bar, La Grotto, that has become an Instagram paradise. More than just a place to idle, this stop is a theatre of exhilarating human feats. With heart-stopping
52 INBOUNDSA / January 2024
grace, locals ascend the craggy rock faces by hand (unaided by ropes), finding their perch before diving into the deep blue below. It’s a dance of courage and freedom. The bar, with its rustic charm and panoramic views, throbs with club hits; Dua Lipa and Elton John duet, guests are bobbing, sipping, and enjoying nature’s show, with a dash of human spectacle for good measure. My daughter leaps off the diving board into crystal-clear water. It’s a sublime moment in time, a memory to preserve; as a traveller, it’s bliss to unearth these treasures. Long may it last. IB

Physical intelligence HAS A PROFOUND IMPACT ON OVERALL WELL-BEING AND SUCCESS
IN THE EXPLORATION OF HUMAN INTELLIGENCE, THE CONVENTIONAL EMPHASIS HAS BEEN ON COGNITIVE CAPACITIES SUCH AS PROBLEMSOLVING, CREATIVITY, AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE. NEVERTHELESS, A BURGEONING CONCEPT IS GAINING RECOGNITION FOR ITS PROFOUND IMPACT ON OVERALL WELL-BEING AND SUCCESS: PHYSICAL INTELLIGENCE, WRITES AUTHOR DR CANDICE BOOYSEN.
B
ringing this concept to the forefront, I, as a practicing organisational psychologist and founder of the nonprofit organisation Releasing Eagles, introduced physical intelligence in communities through mentorship and coaching work two decades ago. Physical intelligence is the ability to use one’s body effectively to navigate the challenges of the physical world. It encompasses a keen awareness of body movements, coordination, balance, and spatial orientation, extending beyond the realms of athletes or dancers to encompass everyday activities requiring motor skills; like driving, cooking, or even typing. In my recently launched book, Releasing Eagles: Changing Lives Through Mentorship and
54 INBOUNDSA / January 2024
Coaching, I share stories, such as providing selfdefence classes to young girls in response to the femicide crisis in our country five years ago.
Close link between physical intelligence and cognitive performance
Research indicates a close link between physical intelligence and cognitive performance. Regular physical activity has been shown to enhance cognitive function, improve memory, and boost creativity. The intricate connection between the body and the brain underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle for optimal mental functioning. One of the success stories I recount in the book involves a mentee, now a qualified Chartered Accountant, who struggled to focus during exam

preparation. A simple piece of advice – put on your running shoes and go for a jog before hitting the books again – resulted in her making the Dean’s merit list.
Plays a pivotal role in emotional regulation
Moreover, physical intelligence plays a pivotal role in emotional regulation. The mindbody connection is a powerful force, with individuals possessing high physical intelligence demonstrating better emotional resilience and stress management. Mindful physical activities, such as yoga, not only contribute to physical well-being but also foster a sense of inner calm and balance.
Physical intelligence a valuable asset
In the professional realm, physical intelligence becomes a distinguishing factor. Those with adept physical skills often excel in roles demanding precision, coordination, and quick decision-making. HOW TO CHOOSE THE
right mattress CHOOSING THE RIGHT MATTRESS IS ONE OF THE MOST DAUNTING DECISIONS ONE CAN MAKE FOR YOURSELF, BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE, SAYS BORIS WANG OF RAINBOW HOME.
W
hat must you consider when choosing the right bed?
Choosing the right mattress is a critical decision that impacts your overall sleep quality and health. Key factors to consider are size, mattress type, quality, firmness level, and support. Measure your room to ensure the bed frame and mattress fit comfortably, leaving enough space for movement and additional furniture. You should also take into consideration your health. Some mattresses are designed to alleviate back pain. Your budget is also important.
A hybrid mattress that combines pocket springs with memory foam layers appears to be an excellent match for my preferences. It offers a good balance of support, comfort, and durability, making it a great investment for a restful night’s sleep.
The firmer the mattress, the better for your back, right? The belief that a firmer mattress is universally better for your back isn’t entirely accurate.
The ideal mattress firmness for back health varies based on individual needs, preferences, and specific back issues.
Selecting the right mattress is a balance between personal comfort, support, budget, and individual health needs. It’s advisable to test different options, read reviews, and consult healthcare providers if you have specific health concerns related to sleep. Remember, a mattress is a long-term investment in your health and well-being.
Here’s a more nuanced look at the relationship between mattress firmness and back health: Heavier individuals might need a firmer mattress to prevent excessive sinking, which can misalign the spine.
Which is the best type of mattress for you and why?
To determine whether a mattress is best for stomach sleepers, back sleepers, or side sleepers, we need to consider the typical characteristics of mattresses and how they align with the needs of each sleeping position. IB
Rainbow Home provides large varieties for mattress selection. I love spring mattresses with memory foam in them.

Male breast cancer IS ON THE INCREASE
THERE IS A LOT OF AWARENESS AROUND BREAST CANCER IN WOMEN – AND RIGHTLY SO, AS IT IS ONE OF THE TOP FEMALE CANCERS IN SOUTH AFRICA AND CARRIES A LIFETIME RISK OF 1 IN 25. HOWEVER, THERE IS A DISTINCT LACK OF AWARENESS ABOUT THE FACT THAT MEN CAN ALSO GET BREAST CANCER, WRITES TONY SINGLETON, CEO AT TURNBERRY MANAGEMENT RISK SOLUTIONS.
W
hile the risk is significantly lower and incidences are rare, it is becoming more common. The issue is that it is often diagnosed late because men simply do not think that they could have breast cancer, which increases the mortality rate and has implications for treatment. Men need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and ensure that they have the right medical and gap cover in place to protect them from financial hardship.
breast cancer, as well as lifestyle factors such as obesity, and oestrogen-related drugs that are used for gender reassignment and in the treatment of prostate cancer.
Rare, but it happens
The lump, a ductal carcinoma about the size of a marble, was surgically removed along with several lymph nodes, and following surgery, he had six months of chemotherapy followed by six weeks of radiation.
Many people simply do not realise that men can indeed get breast cancer. Although it is rare, only accounting for 1% of breast cancers, it still happens, and the diagnosis is arguably even more devastating for men. Anatomically, the male breast is very similar to the female breast, and although it lacks the mammary glands and milk ducts, it still contains breast tissue that has the potential to become malignant. The incidence of male breast cancer is increasing, although up-to-date statistics are difficult to obtain in South Africa. The outdated National Cancer Registry reports that there were 194 cases in South Africa in 2017, while in the US there are around 2 800 cases per year. Risk factors include age and family history of
58 INBOUNDSA / January 2024
A case in point
South African Steve Kelly is a breast cancer survivor. He was diagnosed with high-risk Stage 3 Grade 3 breast cancer in December 2018, after his partner felt a lump behind his right nipple. The nipple also appeared slightly inverted, but otherwise, Kelly had no symptoms or feelings of illness.
“Nothing can prepare you for the shock of a cancer diagnosis. It is a reality check, and it forces you to relook at your life. I found myself to be ignorant of the basics of breast cancer awareness. How could I not know that men get breast cancer?” he says. He was declared cancer-free in May 2020. He is now on prophylactic hormone treatment and has a check-up every three months. While Kelly is one of the lucky ones, the reality is that many men who receive a diagnosis of breast cancer are not. The late stage of diagnosis increases the mortality rate and also means that treatment has to be more aggressive.
HEALTH
Financial well-being is critical too
The treatment for male breast cancer is the same as for women and includes a mastectomy, radiation, chemotherapy, and ongoing hormone therapy. Although male breast cancer may be covered as a Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB) condition, this is not always the case, and even if it is, there are certain limits involved and things like biological cancer drugs will not be covered. For non-PMB conditions, medical aids typically offer either an overall annual limit for cancer treatment or a specified Rand value for treatment, after which expenses will need to be paid for out of pocket. There is generally a co-payment of around 20% that the patient will need to cover themselves, and cancer treatments quickly become costly.
THE EARLIER THAT A CANCER OF ANY TYPE IS DETECTED, THE MORE SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT WILL BE.
Gap cover is a cost-effective way to safeguard financial well-being by covering many of the shortfalls around surgeons, anaesthetists, co-payments, and more. In addition, some gap covers offer cover for trauma care and counselling to help men who have received a diagnosis of cancer get professional mental health support to help them process the diagnosis and come to terms with it. Certain gap covers also offer a special cancer benefit that gives policyholders a onceoff payment for the first diagnosis of cancer.
Know the signs
Lack of awareness is the number one challenge when it comes to male breast cancer. Men need to be aware that breast cancer is something that could happen to them, and they need to know what to look out for. If there are lumps in the breast, the nipples appear inverted, the skin is dimpled, puckered, or resembles an orange peel, if the skin is red or scaly, or there is a fluid or bloody discharge from the nipple, or there is any change in the size or shape or a thickening under the areola or the armpit, SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION. POST HOLIDAY BLUES?
5 easy steps to get
back into work mode
WE ALL KNOW THE FEELING OF HAVING TO GET BACK INTO WORK MODE AFTER WEEKS OF FREEDOM UNCONSTRAINED BY WORK STRESS. STARTING OUT MOTIVATED AND HARNESSING THE ENERGY FROM YOUR HOLIDAY TO TAKE IT INTO THE NEW YEAR WILL MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO YOUR MENTAL WELL-BEING AND PERFORMANCE, WRITES DR LINDA MEYER, A LEADERSHIP EXPERT AND MD AT IIE ROSEBANK COLLEGE.
1. Start slow, aim high
4. Reconnecting with colleagues
2. Navigating the to-do maze
5. Planning the year
Aim to get one thing done, and then another. Break down tasks into smaller, manageable steps to ensure a steady progress, thus providing a sense of accomplishment that fuels further productivity.
The post-holiday workload can be overwhelming. Effective prioritisation and organisation are key. This involves sorting tasks by urgency and importance and decluttering your physical and digital workspace to create a conducive environment for focused work. A flooded inbox is a common post-holiday scenario. Tackling this effectively requires a strategy – prioritising emails, setting aside dedicated times for responses, and using organisational tools like folders and flags – and can transform a daunting task into a manageable one.
3. Re-establishing routines
Holidays often disrupt our daily routines. Reestablishing these routines is vital. This means realigning sleep patterns, mealtimes, and exercise regimes to pre-holiday schedules. The comfort of routine can provide a much-needed anchor amidst back-to-work demands.
60 INBOUNDSA / January 2024
Human connections can significantly ease the transition. Engaging with colleagues, sharing holiday experiences, and updating yourself on significant developments during your absence can rejuvenate your sense of belonging and teamwork.
Getting back to the same-old-same-old can be hugely demoralising. That is why looking at the year ahead is important, as is planning something to work towards. Whether that be your next holiday, training or upskilling opportunity, or a new hobby, resolve to ensure that you bring something fresh and new into your life so that you can have something to look forward to or work towards. Lastly, it’s important to remember that seeking support and feedback is not a sign of weakness but professionalism. Collaborating with colleagues and supervisors for advice or assistance can provide new perspectives and solutions, making the transition smoother. IB

If December has taken too much of your money and the debit orders have bounced, please pick up the phone and call your bank. Inside those tall bank buildings are human beings that also experienced December. They also had to deal with extra expenses that come with the season to be jolly, so they understand your situation. In this call, be honest about your situation and ask to set up a payment plan that you will be able to honour. The worst thing you can do in this situation is to ignore it and sweep it under the carpet. Under this proverbial carpet many things go wrong, for example, extra penalty fees and damaging your credit score. These are not good ways to start the year and I am sure your New Year’s resolutions do not involve starting the year on a bad financial footing.

How to get through the first months of the year
After those bothersome debit orders have been dealt with comes the realisation that there is a lot of the month still left in January before the financial replenishment of pay day. This is not the time to call your not so friendly mashonisa (loan shark) because he or she will definitely eventually bite you.
Think back to last year; is there a friendly family member or friend that you helped? This might be an opportune time to seek their assistance because their loan will not come with interest. Another option is to consider an overdraft from your bank; this can keep you afloat for January and February but do your best to pay it back and close it off by March. You could also look around your house and start to decrease the clutter. You might find that there are some items that you did not use all of last year. You can take these items to Cash Crusaders or Cash Converters and kill two birds with one stone; some money in your pocket and a cleaner house or garage. Another option is to consider your skillset, how could it bring in some extra income? For example, let’s say you are an employed graphic designer, you could offer discount graphic designer services for family or friends, and this would be some money to keep you going for January and February. You might also have some useful items that you could lease out to get some money in. For example, if you have a bakkie, you might ask family or friends if they would like to hire your bakkie to transport big items or get rid of their garden refuse so that they can begin 2024 on a fresh start. The other side of the equation for making your money stretch is to decrease your expenses and consumption. More home cooking and less take-away foods is actually a good New Year’s resolution that will also stretch your money. You also do not have to go out every weekend; use January weekends as a time to think and reflect how you will play the money game differently in 2024 so that next year January is just a regular month. SOUTH AFRICANS ARE OBSESSED WITH
Dubai
ITS TAX REGIME, POLITICAL STABILITY, AND EVER-GROWING ECONOMY ARE MAKING DUBAI A HOTSPOT FOR SOUTH AFRICANS TO BUY PROPERTY. INBOUND SA EDITOR GAVIN PRINS ASKED CHAS EVERITT CEO, BERRY EVERITT, WHY THIS CITY IS SUCH AN ATTRACTION FOR US LOCALS.

o you find that many of your South African clients buy in Dubai more than in other cities around the world?
Some clients who want to diversify their real estate investment portfolios have already bought in Dubai, and it is a recommendation now.

Dubai is a major tourist and business hub and so it enjoys strong demand for rental homes and high yields, and the city also boasts strong economic growth, political stability, and a very favourable tax regime. Through our membership in Leading Real Estate Companies of the World, we are also able to connect SA investors with the top independent brokerage in Dubai and simplify the process of finding and acquiring the properties that best meet their needs.
What is it about Dubai that is so inviting to South Africans?
The stability and efficiency of government and, for those living there, the dynamic business environment and opportunity to earn relatively high salaries, in dollars.
The rules for women are so different from those in South Africa. Yet, the social regulations in Dubai do not bother South Africans, it seems.
We have not encountered any negative impressions, although it must be said that most of our clients buying in Dubai are doing so for
investment purposes and not necessarily to live there themselves or with their families.
How much would a property in Dubai set us back, for example, for a threebedroom apartment?
Dubai is not the cheapest investment destination in the world but does enjoy very high yields and low property taxes in compensation. Prices for three-bedroom apartments in Dubai start at around US$1 million (about R18 million).
The Dubai government is inviting the world to come and live in the country. How has it relaxed the property regulations? The UAE government changed the law in 2022 to make it possible for non-residents, including foreigners as well as expats, to buy residential or commercial property in Dubai.
However, foreign ownership is restricted to certain freehold zones in the city, including Palm Jumeirah, Downtown Dubai, Jumeirah Beach Residences, and Dubai Marina. Foreign owners are also allowed to rent out their properties in these areas. IB January 2024 / INBOUNDSA 69

The estate’s accolades in golf also include The Best Golf Course in South Africa, awarded in Dubai in 2021, along with numerous experience awards. “We realise, however, that our estate is diverse and that not everyone plays golf. Hiking trails & mountain bike routes will expand the offering for outdoor enthusiasts With the acquisition of some 80 hectares of land by the HOA from the developer, Jeff says that more hiking trails and mountain bike routes will expand the offering for outdoor enthusiasts.
Early foresight by the directors, along with sustainable and responsible development, strict environmental protocols, and building regulations has secured a vision that many from the metros in SA country can only dream of. Planning and consideration
With careful planning and consideration, investors can enjoy several advantages, including: • Financial returns: Bush properties can offer excellent financial returns, especially those located in areas with high tourism potential. For example, Simbini Lifestyle Estate, which is located on the border of the Kruger National Park, offers investors the potential to earn a gross return of 20-22% per year. • Unique lifestyle: Living in “the bush,” or close to it, offers a unique and rewarding lifestyle. Residents, whether permanent or holiday visitors, can enjoy stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, and a sense of community. • Sustainability: Bush property developments are often designed with sustainability in mind. This can include features such as energy-efficient construction, water conservation measures, and waste management systems. • Environmental stewardship: By investing in a bush property, investors become custodians of a natural environment that is important for biodiversity and conservation.

considering the favourable exchange rate with currencies like the US Dollar and Euro, which makes South Africa a cost-effective destination for international travellers. Investments in bush properties are not mere transactions but are akin to securing a stake in a living, breathing entity, and an excellent investment. Let’s take Simbini Lifestyle Estate as an example. It is situated on the Crocodile River, looking directly into Kruger, yet close enough to the town of Malelane for easy provisioning. The developers are committed to environmental stewardship, and it has been designed to minimise its impact on the surrounding environment. With a promise of gross returns within five years and an annual return rate between 20% and 22%, an investment here looks robust against the backdrop of current global economic trends and is likely to outperform traditional investment expectations.

is paramount. Here, the investor is not merely a buyer but a custodian of South Africa’s rich biodiversity, which encompasses protected areas of fauna and flora, integral to the nation’s natural heritage. Such an investment transcends the material to embody a responsibility toward conservation and the celebration of life in its most primal form. At Simbini, the meaning of “sustainability” is threefold: ecological, structural, and financial. The estate is meticulously planned, from its construction methodologies to its long-term financial viability. Significantly, it includes an operational 17-hectare macadamia farm, which adds a layer of agro-economic resilience to the investment, ensuring a steady income stream while promoting ecological harmony. Bush properties adjoining the Kruger National Park, especially those along vital water sources like the Crocodile River, come with an added imperative – custodianship of a precious legacy and a commitment to the enduring prosperity of one of the planet’s most extraordinary landscapes. TECH REVIEW
The SabineTek SmartMike+ IN THE EVER-EVOLVING LANDSCAPE OF TECHNOLOGY AND JOURNALISM, THERE’S A PARTICULAR GADGET THAT’S ALWAYS A CENTREPIECE IN MY TOOLBOX: THE MICROPHONE. WHETHER YOUR STORY IS TEXT OR VIDEO, A MIC NEEDS TO BE RELIABLE.
F
BY DEAN MCCOUBREY or mobile reporters, those on-the-move, and increasingly using their phones, a Lavalier microphone for smartphones also needs to be agile, portable and have features that are adapting to the times.
It was in 2020 that the SmartMike+ was first in the limelight as a CES Innovation Award winner. I remember vividly being one of the early adopters, backing it on Kickstarter. Unboxing it felt like a glimpse into the future of mobile journalism – compact, sleek, and unassumingly powerful.
Delivering an impressive 48khz audio quality
Its two-way Bluetooth capability allows for synchronizing real-time stereo sound with video on smartphones, delivering an impressive 48kHz audio quality. Its design, reminiscent of a miniature vape, is deceptively simple – clip it on, connect to your phone, and you’re ready to capture crystalclear audio. Pairing it with its sister product, the AudioWow, a matchbox-size mic that goes a step further, as a mobile mixing console offering surround sound, a voice changer, five band equalizer and noise reduction, elevates its capabilities, allowing fine-
tuning of audio settings through its own userfriendly app. Its compatibility with both Android and iOS devices, along with third-party apps like FiLMiC Pro, underscores its versatility. For our media team, attending events with an arsenal of techdriven tools, the SmartMike+ has been central in capturing high-quality audio, which is often the backbone of compelling storytelling.
Embodies essence of merging tech and journalism for excellent content
In the realm of mobile journalism, where agility and quality are paramount, it has dimensions that stand out. Yes, Rode delivers amazing Bluetooth products in sound, but this embodies the essence of what we do at JournalismWeb – merging tech and journalism to create content that resonates. It will be the same for content creators on-the-go. In conclusion, the SabineTek SmartMike+ is more than just a gadget; it’s another innovation that is shaping the future of reporting. In a world where technology continuously redefines the boundaries of journalism, these are trusty companions in our quest to tell stories that matter, with clarity and creativity. GARDENING
Transform your garden WITH THESE INSPIRING IDEAS GRANNY MOUSE COUNTRY HOUSE & SPA, WITH ITS DISTINCTIVE “HOME-AWAYFROM-HOME” FEEL AND SERENE, PICTURESQUE LOCATION ALONG THE LIONS RIVER IN THE KWAZULU-NATAL MIDLANDS, IS KNOWN FOR ITS BEAUTIFUL GARDEN SETTING. ITS NAME ORIGINATES FROM THE LAST LION WHICH WAS SHOT IN THE AREA IN 1856. GENERAL MANAGER, SEAN GRANGER, SAYS THAT MANY GUESTS TELL THEM THAT ON RETURNING HOME THEY FEEL INSPIRED TO BEGIN TRANSFORMING THEIR OWN GARDENS.
“F
ood gardens are a burgeoning and worthwhile trend,” says Sean, “but not everyone has the time, budget, or suitable property to establish an orchard, and growing tunnels can be unsightly in an urban setting”.
Here are some great ideas that don’t require huge outlay or space, and which will greatly enhance your exterior and tickle your taste buds. If you have a small garden, no garden, or a nice garden but tend to move a lot, you might have always avoided growing fruit. Well, if you think January 2024 / INBOUNDSA 89

outside the box, you can grow fruit in one.
Cherry trees
With beautiful blossoms and delicate fruit, the cherry tree makes a good argument for itself. It is also one of the fruit trees that can do exceptionally well in a container, provided that you deliver on certain criteria. Because it is a tree, you will need a large container – get the biggest one you can afford in terms of both money and space, but make sure it is at least 60cm deep and 45cm wide. Cherries prefer a sandier soil medium, so keep that in mind when planting. The trees also have a shallow root system, so they will need to be watered often. Mulching the surface of the soil will also help to keep them happy and healthy. Feed cherries in pots regularly with a fruit-specific fertiliser.
FOOD GARDENS ARE A WORTHWHILE TREND, BUT NOT EVERYONE HAS THE TIME, BUDGET, OR SUITABLE PROPERTY TO ESTABLISH AN ORCHARD... with a well-draining potting mix is a good start. Add a slow-release fertiliser for flowers and fruit and you’re good to go.
Cherries need sun as well as quite specific conditions to thrive: warm, but not hot, summers and cold winters, but with no frost! The climates of the eastern Free State and the Ceres area of the Western Cape suit them perfectly, but they can be grown elsewhere if you are prepared to mollycoddle them.
Feed orange trees every four months or so after planting, and water well twice a week. Position in full sun and protect from frost in winter by covering with frost guard or moving the container into a sheltered position.
In areas where the sun is too strong during winter, such as the Highveld, you will need to shade them with a 50% shade cloth and keep them safe from frost too.
Plum trees ask very little of you in return for a heavy crop of sweet and delicious fruit. When potting a plum tree, add some sand or perlite to the potting medium for better drainage.
Most of the cherry varieties available locally are sweet cherries like ‘Giant Heidelfinger’, ‘Early Red’, and ‘Bing’, which are usually eaten fresh. You also get sour cherries, which are better for cooking. When harvesting, pick your cherries when they are completely ripe as they don’t ripen after picking.
Orange or lemon trees
We say orange, but you could just as easily grow a lemon tree in a container – some cooks find lemons more useful than oranges. Citrus trees do well in containers and in SA you don’t need to go to those lengths: a nice big pot

Plum trees
Full sun, regular watering, a good-quality potting soil and regular fertilising with a slow-release fertiliser will make for a happy plum tree. Protect the early spring blossoms by either sheltering the tree with frost-guard fabric or moving the container into a warmer place on really cold days. As with cherries, ensure that your single plum tree is a self-pollinating variety, or get two plants. Popular varieties in South Africa are ‘Pioneer’, ‘Santa Rosa’ and ‘Harry Pickstone’ (all selfpollinating) and ‘Fortuna’, ‘Sapphire’, ‘Sun Kiss’, ‘Purple Majesty’, ‘Sun Gold’ and ‘Laetitia’ (crosspollinating). The fruit will be ready for harvest in mid to late summer. IB

BOOK CLUB
MY EPIC FAIL FAIRYTALE BY GAVIN PRINS In Senta Seele’s book My Epic Fail Fairytale, she shares her ‘epic fail’ of a fairytale life and shares how to do the work to shift your focus from ‘happily-ever-after’ to ‘happily-in-the-now’.
Why did you write this book?
I wanted to help others to live better, happier lives. Especially when in a position where they need to start over and write a new story for themselves.
How are ordinary South Africans going to relate to your story?
We have all experienced a moment when we have felt completely disillusioned with life, whether in relationships, business, or our personal life. I have spoken to so many women who have said “me too, I can’t believe other women feel the same as me” after reading my book. I chose to show up vulnerably to encourage others to do the same.
What is your goal with the book?
I want to inspire, encourage, and make a difference to as many lives as I possibly can. IB
