RECHARGED AND READY!
I HOPE YOUR FESTIVE SEASON WAS FILLED WITH QUALITY TIME WITH FAMILY OR ALONE, PLENTY OF VITAMIN D, GOOD BOOKS OR MOVIES, AND REFLECTION. NOW THAT IT’S BACK TO THE OFFICE, YOU MIGHT ALREADY BE FEELING DESPONDENT. DON’T BE.
Hopefully, during the holidays, you had some time to recharge your batteries. But the trick to getting back to work is to ease into your duties. Take small tasks and make a huge success of them.
During 2024, I struggled with time management. But, upon reflection, I discovered ways to delegate more effectively and guide those who help me produce this amazing magazine. Speaking of which, InBound SA has also undergone some changes, thanks to the creative vision of our Editor-in-Chief, Elroy van Heerden-Mays. You will notice a few new names alongside incredible stories.
Leanne Manas’s story about her 50th birthday inspired me. While I’m considering which lodge to hire for my own 50th birthday in a few years’ time, I’ve realised that a birthday is really about you. Maybe ticking off my bucket list of amazing travel destinations for my big day isn’t a bad idea after all.
In this issue, we take you on a journey to amazing Italy, exploring the country that is home to the Vatican and the world’s oldest university. The pictures speak a thousand words. Locally, we visit the charming fishing town of Port Nolloth, showcasing its breathtaking sea views.
And the social media comedy duo, Peadon Smith and Salome, visited our offices in Cape Town and had us in stitches with their hilarious stories.
We hope you enjoy this issue. Till next month!
Ciao!

YOUR SHOCKING TRAVEL STORIES
EXPOSED AT THE AIRPORT
EXPOSED AT THE AIRPORT
While travelling to Johannesburg for business, I found myself last in line to board the plane on a sweltering tarmac. With a small case in hand and my jacket draped over my arm, disaster struck – my bodysuit strap slipped off my shoulder, and before I could react, it popped off completely, leaving me exposed. Mortified, I dropped to the ground to fix it, my face burning with embarrassment under the gaze of a predominantly male audience standing on the stairwell. The ordeal wasn’t over: I was seated in the jump seat, facing the entire cabin for the flight. With my head down and jacket on, I couldn’t get off that plane fast enough!
Amelia Hayes, Cape Town
STUCK IN THE SLOW LOUNGE
Stuck in an airport lounge in Frankfurt was not how I envisioned my journey. The plan was to have a connecting flight to Stockholm from Frankfurt, departing from South Africa. I would board at 6.40am, land at 9am, and have the city of Stockholm to myself for a day. But then, my passport went missing, and I believe it was stolen. The best way to describe my next two hours following this discovery would be “hysterical uglycrying.” I was taken to a small room for questioning and then guided on the process of my deportation. However, there was a ray of light: after receiving tickets for my return flight to South Africa, I remembered that business class flyers have access to a VIP lounge. Oh, being stuck there
for 14 hours felt like a miniparadise.

LOOM
As an Accounts Payable Specialist, I pride myself on attention to detail, but nothing could have prepared me for my layover nightmare. At the airport, a misread declaration form turned into a full-blown interrogation. The customs officers suspected that I was smuggling undeclared valuables, because I’d listed “business samples.” My attempts to explain fell flat until I produced invoices from my laptop, proving I was legit. Hours later, they finally let me go – but I almost missed my flight and learned a hard lesson: to double-check forms, even when you’re meticulous with numbers!

WHERE IS THE CREW?
I once flew from London to Joburg, connecting to Cape Town on an evening flight with Kulula. There was a huge delay at the gate, and it was then announced that the reason was that the cabin crew couldn’t be found! It turned out that the crew had been mistakenly taken to a different plane, and no one knew where they were. The absurdity of a missing crew was both hilarious and maddening. As passengers, we exchanged numerous bewildered glances, and someone even jokingly suggested offering their CV to fill in. Eventually, the lost crew was found, and we were on our way, laughing about the most bizarre travel hiccup I had ever experienced.

I.N.O.X. COLLECTION WITH AUTOMATIC AND SLEEK SMALL MODELS
AFTER RECENTLY INTRODUCING THE NEW I.N.O.X. CHRONO, VICTORINOX ENHANCES THE COLLECTION WITH AUTOMATIC AND SMALLER VERSIONS OF THE POPULAR WATCH. ACROSS ALL MODELS, CARVED SHAPES, BOLD GEOMETRICS, INNOVATIVE MATERIALS, AND INDUSTRIAL CODES ROOTED IN THE BRAND CONVERGE WITH SWISS PRECISION TO MASTER TIME – AT ANY TIME.
With the introduction of the I.N.O.X. Automatic and the I.N.O.X. Small, Victorinox combines the strength of the popular and recently redesigned I.N.O.X. watch with the refined elegance of slightly resized models. The new I.N.O.X. Automatic offers a diverse array of colour and material combinations, featuring a watchcase crafted from either steel or carbon. Carbon models come in a set with a matching Special Edition Swiss Army KnifeTM featuring elegant matte scales and black tools exclusively bundled with the watch. The more petite I.N.O.X. Small sets contrast with its case made of robust steel and a choice of elegant colourways. Despite its smaller size, the I.N.O.X. Small includes all the features of its larger counterparts: date display, antimagnetic protection, shock resistance, and water resistance – all backed by Victorinox’s quality promise.
All steel watches of the Victorinox I.N.O.X.
Automatic family pay tribute to the iconic Swiss Army KnifeTM by re-interpreting the popular Alox pattern, the well-known feature of the pocket knife scales, for its dial decoration. The carbon model dials draw inspiration from majestic Swiss mountains and serene valleys. The case features
strong shapes and curves, and the signature bezel looks as if it has been carved out by a sharp pocket knife. The Swiss Army KnifeTM itself is evoked in the counterweight of the second hand. Antimagnetic protection on quartz movements avoids time inaccuracy and ensures absolute punctuality and reliability. ISO-certified for shock and water resistance, each watch gives the owner maximum of freedom during any adventure or activity.
Personalisation option
To be well prepared for just about any situation, all-new Victorinox watches offer a wide selection of straps. Thanks to an innovative system, the straps can be easily changed without the need for tools in only a few seconds. Every watch can therefore be personalised and perfectly matched to the outfit or activity of the day with straps made of paracord, rubber, leather, wood and more.
A 5-year warranty+ is further testimony to the high-quality approach of the brand. Victorinox watches can be purchased in specialty shops, in Victorinox stores and online. IB

The faces I saw, the people I met, have etched themselves into my soul.
Leanne Manas’s JOURNEY INTO RWANDA
BY BYRON LUKAS
AS SHE STOOD FACE-TO-FACE WITH THE MAJESTIC MOUNTAIN GORILLAS IN RWANDA’S VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, LEANNE MANAS COULDN’T HELP BUT FEEL A SENSE OF AWE AND REVERENCE. WHILE MOST WOULD SPEND THEIR 50TH BIRTHDAY SIPPING MIMOSAS WITH FRIENDS, LEANNE CHOSE TO WITNESS THESE GENTLE GIANTS IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT, THRIVING IN A CHALLENGING WORLD.
Renowned SA businesswoman and TV presenter Leanne Manas embarked on a transformative journey to Rwanda for her 50th birthday, exploring the breathtaking landscapes and majestic gorillas that captured her heart.
The journey she had long envisioned would prove to be not just a retreat, but a powerful awakening, marking a profound shift in how she engages with the world around her.
“Going to Rwanda has always been one of my top bucket list items,” Leanne reflects.
In 2021, she faced a frustrating setback when she and her husband were all set to explore the lush Rwandan forests while also hosting an event for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
A last-minute travel ban, prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic, abruptly dashed their plans.
I then, unfortunately, learned on the night of departure that Rwanda had locked South Africans out due to Covid, along with that whole strain we’ve now given a name to. I had my bags at the front door, and my husband and I were
going to do gorilla trekking after the conference,” she recalls.
After several years, Leanne’s dreams rekindled, and 2024 would finally see their ambitions realised.
“It was postponed until last year when we decided to reignite that desire, and we reinstated the trip, which was a huge dream come true. It’s always been a mission, and now it’s a mission accomplished,” she states, her enthusiasm evident as she speaks of her October trip.
Upon arrival, the breathtaking landscapes of Rwanda left her in awe: rolling green hills, vibrant windflowers, and the kaleidoscope of colours that grace the African rainforest seemed to envelope her.
“We were incredibly lucky because we booked the whole experience through Singita. We obtained the trekking license through them,” she says.
We did a lot of research on how it all works and what it’s all about, but we were so spoiled by booking with Singita – they covered everything for us.
Trekking through the dense forests ignited a mix of anticipation and nerves, yet all apprehensions vanished as Leanne laid eyes on the gentle giants
of the forest.
“It started to drizzle at the time while we were in the beautiful forest, and we got word that the gorillas are very close by,” she reveals.
The first glimpse of a Silverback gorilla, the formidable leader of its tribe, is a moment she cherishes.
“Our first sighting was a Silverback – the first thing I saw was this big, magnificent gorilla, the boss of this specific tribe, sitting in front of us, staring right at you,” she shares, recalling both the excitement and intimidation that came with it. ”You are taught a lot of things that you need to do and how you need to respect them. ”
of teenagers navigating their forest hierarchy. “It was just phenomenal to sit and watch them in their terrain, and that really gave me a brand-new respect for them,” she says.
Beyond the mountain gorillas, Leanne found herself deep within Volcanoes National Park, enchanted by the rich culture of the Rwandan people, whose warmth and hospitality complemented the stunning landscapes.
“I absolutely loved learning about the gorillas and their conservation. I also appreciated learning about how they protect these incredible creatures,” she says. “We also had some awesome experiences, including encountering the Golden Monkeys, which were gentle and incredibly approachable,” she enthuses.
Gazing at the two surrounding volcanoes while lying in bed, feeling at one with nature, was an experience she treasured deeply. “Rwanda left a lasting impression on me, and I definitely want to return to experience the tranquillity of sitting in bed, surrounded by two volcanoes, and enjoying the rhinos up close and personal without feeling threatened. It’s a feeling of being one with nature – a truly unique experience,” Leanne expresses, her voice filled with gratitude.
Her exploration of Rwanda was not merely a visual feast; it stirred a desire for continued adventure. “I will return to Rwanda as often as I can,” she declares, reflecting on the mountains of beauty and resilience she encountered. “The faces I saw and the people I met have left an indelible mark on my soul. Rwanda is a place of profound resilience, and it’s clear that the people are living out the Jesuit Mission’s plea: they are choosing not to waste the world’s beauty and joy, but to protect and rebuild it, no matter the cost,” she adds.
The essence of Rwanda, woven with threads of resilience and conservation, resonates deeply with Leanne Manas, illuminating the path to future explorations.
For a solid hour, Leanne and her party observed the gorilla family, mesmerised by the warmth of the scene before them: toddlers high on sugarcane, swinging from the branches and the playful antics
Her adventures in this enchanting country continue to inspire, reminding us that the world is indeed a playground waiting to be discovered. IB

MZANSI’S CELEBS
SHARE THEIR 2025 GOALS AND WHAT THEY’RE LEAVING BEHIND
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
HELLO, 2025! WHAT A WAY TO BREAK INTO THE NEW YEAR, AND BOY, DO WE ALL HAVE A LIST OF WISHFUL NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS UP OUR SLEEVES. WE CAUGHT UP WITH MZANSI’S MUCH-LOVED CELEBS TO FIND OUT WHAT’S ON THEIR RESOLUTION AGENDA AND WHAT THEY’RE LEAVING BEHIND.
Yaaseen Barnes (comedian)
“I plan to lose weight, exercise more, and stop lying to myself. Usually, these are just words I say, but they’re never implemented. I want to bring more joy to the world and take the festive season, making it an extended celebration for the whole year.”
Tollie Parton (TV show host)
“I would like to be more delusional in 2025. I believe in 2025 Prince Harry and I will be dating. I am leaving behind small-minded people in 2024. If you are too stupid to realise not everyone thinks and feels exactly like you – I don’t want to waste my energy on you. People are different, and that’s beautiful.”
Gadija Sydow-Noordien (celebrity chef)
“To live life to the fullest, take more breaks, and make myself a priority – life’s too short not to. When challenges occur, I want to get through them, not around them, and keep going. I want to travel more, go on a boat cruise with great friends (the plans are already in action), and finally, laugh more.”
Jarrad Ricketts (singer)
“First up, kicking those limiting beliefs to the curb. If there’s one thing I’ve learned that fear is just your GPS pointing you toward growth. So, in 2025, I’m saying “YES” to new, scary opportunities (Unless it involves bungee jumping. Let’s not get carried away.)”
Robin Pieters (singer)
“Leaving behind negative baggage. 2025 is set to be a year of major breakthroughs for me in all aspects of my life, including the release of my documentary, which is set to drop in mid-2025.”
Paxton Fielies (singer)
“To create and release my third album. I have had such an incredible journey filled with highs and lows, I have fallen in and out of love with music throughout my career. I’m in the best space I’ve ever been creatively and ready to take on something bigger than I have ever imagined in hopes that it will have a positive impact on people’s lives. Here’s to 2025 and new music!”
Reynardt Hugo (actor and director)
“I want to leave behind the hurt of colleagues we’ve lost to death in 2024. I want to take my business Straatkat Media to new heights and better myself every day.”
Charlton Brown (actor)
A habit I am leaving behind? Let me think. Oh yes, being broke. My goal for 2025 is to try and make SFX prosthetics and makeup for film.

FIVE MINUTES WITH STANDUP COMEDIAN Lunga Tshuka
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
What do you do when the audience doesn’t react to your jokes?
On the outside, I keep going like nothing happened. Inside, though, I’m panicking a bit, re-evaluating the rest of my set, and sometimes even adjusting it on the spot. Other times, you accept the situation and power through to finish the job.
How do you come up with your jokes, and what’s the fastest time you’ve written one?
I usually start with an idea, and sometimes the process takes a while, while other times the jokes flow naturally. I don’t write anything down until I have all the key parts ready – the opening, buildup, and punchline. Once I’m in the zone, it typically takes me an hour or two to put it all together.
What’s the biggest platform you’ve performed on?
Funny you should ask! Recently, I had the honour of hosting the Festive Lights Switch-On as an MC/ comedian alongside the iconic Alan Committie. It was an incredible experience performing for a crowd of over 80 000 people on 1 December 2024.
Who is your favourite comedian, and why?
Can I cheat and name a few? Richard Pryor, Cedric the Entertainer, Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, Mel Jones, and Mojak are all inspirations. But if I had to pick just one, it would be Cedric the Entertainer – his charisma and storytelling are unmatched.
What are your plans for 2025?
I want to do more – bigger shows, more giving back, a one-man performance, exciting collaborations, and hopefully some travel.
If you weren’t a comedian, what would you be?
I’d focus on my other passion: being an Intuitive Life Coach and dedicating my time to my NPO, working with children on self-development and skills-building through fun and creative mediums. IB

JENNA ORTEGA IS BACK AS WEDNESDAY ON NETFLIX
Jenna Ortega may be one of the youngest Hollywood A-listers, but she’s certainly making her mark! According to msn.com, Season One of Wednesday, starring Jenna, wrapped up filming in March 2022 and premiered eight months later, in November 2022. If this timeline is any indication, Wednesday Season 2 might follow a similar schedule, placing its premiere around July 2025. Fingers crossed! Fans are eagerly waiting with great anticipation. *snap snap*

Denzel Washington is receiving rave reviews for his performance in Gladiator II, but it seems the veteran actor is already thinking about his eventual retirement. In a recent interview with Australia’s Today, Denzel Washington shared his plans for the next few years. “I want to do things I haven’t done. We miss the good old days of shows like Tele Fun Quiz, but imagine a twist – families going headto-head, spilling secrets about their loved ones. It could get chaotic, but it would definitely be entertaining!
What’s the most impactful piece of content you’ve created, and why?
I did a video series on mental health called “Mental Aweh-ness” where I interviewed industry professionals about anxiety and depression, the symptoms, the treatment, and how you can overcome it. So many have come forward and asked for help and that has had a huge impact on their lives and mine.
What animal best represents your personality?
I’d definitely say a panda. They have a playful personality, are built for comfort, and seem like they could get along with anyone... as long as they’re not “hangry.”
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you bring?
I’d bring my camera, tripod, and data, and spend the day vlogging my experience. I’d share why I chose these three essentials over something like food, a chef, or even a boat – creating content that’s sure to make everyone smile.

If you could create your own reality show, what would it be about?
Probably a mix of Physical 100 and Big Brother. It blends the competitive and social dynamics of a Big Brother-style game with intense fitness challenges. A diverse group of contestants – from gym enthusiasts to novices – live together in a fully equipped fitness mansion, where their strength, endurance, and teamwork are tested in weekly challenges. But there’s a twist: success isn’t just about physical performance. Strategy, alliances, and social manoeuvring are just as crucial as the workouts.
What’s the most impactful piece of content you’ve created, and why?
I don’t have a favourite in particular, but I do enjoy sharing my clients’ transformations and showcasing their hard work and dedication.
What animal best represents your personality?
A pitbull: loyal, strong, and protective. Much like the breed, I am unwavering in my commitment to those I care about, always standing by their side through thick and thin. My resilience and determination are qualities that define me, and, like a pitbull, I am unafraid to show boldness when it matters most.
Beneath my “tough” exterior, however, lies a deep
sense of affection and care for those who earn my trust. Whether I am tackling a challenge head-on or showing compassion, my loyalty and authenticity reflect the loving yet fierce spirit of a pitbull.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you bring?
My toothbrush, whey protein and a lighter.

If you could create your own reality show, what would it be about?
It would be a reality show offering an all-access pass into the heart of the South African music industry.
What’s the most impactful piece of content you’ve created, and why?
My second album, Too Many Promises, was a turning point, representing a profound shift in both my personal perspective and my approach to art.
What animal best represents your personality?
A cat!
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you bring?
An endless supply of sunblock, food and a friend (lol)!

If you could create your own reality show, what would it be about?
I would create a reality show following people as they try to make it in the creator space, capturing their entire journey on tape. It would give supporters a proper insight into the realities of this world. I believe the journey is a tough one, and reflecting on certain moments – the highs and the lows – can be both inspiring and motivating.
What’s the most impactful piece of content you’ve created, and why?
I used to have a series called Rules and Repercussions, where I created videos about the consequences of committing crimes. For example, I’d cover topics like drunk driving, smoking marijuana, or using other drugs. In these videos, I would explain what typically happens in such cases and share examples of people who were recently caught. Each video would attract a minimum of 100k views, and for me, they felt very impactful –
helping to educate people and potentially deter some from engaging in illegal activities.
As for a single video, I would highlight my Orania video, in which I taught viewers about this “whitesonly” town in South Africa. The video has roughly 95k likes and 1.3 million views, with a comment section filled with people eager to learn, share their opinions, or express their emotions about the topic.
What animal best represents your personality?
I’d be a snow leopard – mysterious and hard to pin down. I navigate conversations with quiet focus, always paying attention. When I do jump in, it’s with sharp insights... or at least I like to think so, lol!
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you bring?
A football: I love the sport and think it would be the only one I could enjoy if I were alone.
A book: I’ve been trying to finish one for the past year, but always end up using the “no time” excuse. I also try listening to audiobooks, but there are too many distractions at the moment. Hopefully, being stranded alone on a desert island might help me focus.
A cameraman: Perhaps I wouldn’t have to be alone, and we could record the whole situation, hoping we make it out. We’d probably form the best friendship and have the best stories to tell when we return, which would make the experience ten times better.
Love, laughs, AND A LITTLE BIT OF DRAMA
Salome Damon-Johansen & Peadon Smith spill the tea!
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
SALOME DAMON-JOHANSEN AND PEADON SMITH ARE THE TIKTOK DUO EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT – AND IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY. WHAT STARTED AS A LOCKDOWN FRIENDSHIP DURING COVID-19 HAS TURNED INTO ONE OF THE FUNNIEST DOUBLE ACTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA, WITH FANS HOOKED ON THEIR LOVE-HATE ANTICS. WHEN INBOUND SA SAT DOWN WITH THE PAIR, IT DIDN’T TAKE LONG FOR THEIR QUIRKS TO SURFACE.
From the minute Peadon and Salome barrelled into the Media Xpose Headquarters, it was a whirlwind of laughs, gags and lively banter debating who gets to answer first and who of the two is the most-loved personality. In true Peadon and Salome style, they were ever-ready to answer every quick-fire question our team had to
While Peadon had a heap of New Year’s resolutions listed, Salome only had one goal: to take her music career to new
QA &
What is your New Year’s resolution and what would you like to leave behind in 2024?
Salome: I want to focus on my music career. While I’ve been doing TV presenting recently, I plan to dedicate 2025 to releasing new music and pursuing my musical goals. I also have a show at the Grand Arena in May, which is one of my big dreams come true.
Peadon: I don’t usually make big plans for the new year, as I choose to go with the flow, and focus on becoming the best version of myself.
Are you a firm believer in Valentine’s Day?
Salome: Not really. My wife, Rosie, and I don’t need a special day to celebrate each other because I always treat her special, and I’m treated like a queen daily. However, on Valentine’s Day, I do give her something extraordinary as a gesture. We also treat our son, Ruben, on this day and let him decide how he wants to make it special.
Peadon: I love to love, and I love easily. I’m a sucker for a good love story. I was once in love, but I was hidden – in a relationship where I was the secret - so I couldn’t do anything special for my Valentine at the time. But I love to treat my mother on Valentine’s Day with flowers and chocolates.
Do you have a secret talent that is useless but fun to show off?
Salome: People won’t believe this, but I’m actually a former gymnast. I only spent time on the beam, but in my head, I’ve done every obstacle there is.
Peadon: I’m a good singer, but when I met Salome, I decided to take a step back so she could shine. So now I do the talking, and she does the singing.
Would
you swap lives?
Salome: No, not at all. I love myself way too much just as I am, so I’d never swap lives with Peadon.
Peadon: Oh no, I wouldn’t want the challenge of her beauty routine – no, thank you!
Your most epic fail in public?
Salome: Once, I decided to perform from the top of a bar because the venue was so full, and the audience couldn’t see me properly. Let’s just say I ended up on the floor very quickly. I fell right in front of the crowd.
Peadon: English isn’t my first language; Afrikaans is. But when I MC, I tend to want to sound American, and then I’m quickly brought back to reality when my English dries up.
If aliens landed on Earth today, what would you tell them about each other?
Salome: Please go back to where you came from – you don’t want to meet Peadon - he will irritate you. Get away as fast as you can.
Peadon: Run away – you won’t love it here with Salome, she’s a lot.
What fashion advice would you give each other?
Salome: I can’t deal with Peadon always wearing dark sunglasses. It’s giving off serious ‘skelm’ vibes, - deep, deep ‘skelm’. So, my advice is for him to lose the shades.
Peadon: I wouldn’t change much about Salome’s fashion. She’s a well-kept woman, with an entire room as a walk-in closet, filled with new wardrobe pieces and wigs. I’m glad she doesn’t wear that Tina Turner wig anymore – otherwise, we’re good, just that wig. IB

Du Toit’s performances on the field speak volumes. While opinions may vary regarding who holds the title of the best Springbok, du Toit’s consistent excellence and dedication to the game make a compelling case for his place among the greats.

FROM archaeology TO ceramics
BY TEMO MPODI
IT’S NOT EVERY DAY THAT YOU COME ACROSS AN ARTIST WITH AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND IN THE MODERN ART WORLD. BUT MELISSA BARNARD, AN ESTABLISHED CERAMICS ARTIST, SHOWS US HOW A SPARK FROM ONE INDUSTRY CAN IGNITE A PASSION IN ANOTHER.
How did your career in ceramics unfold?
My career in ceramics started as a result of my Master’s studies in Archaeology, specifically in ancient cooking. To conduct cooking experiments for my thesis, I had to make my own ‘ancient’ cooking pots from clay, which sparked my passion for ceramics. My research in ancient cooking led to my first commission, a National Geographic documentary in 2016. My studies also led me to various residencies and archaeological excavations over the years, which have greatly shaped my style and the techniques I use.
Your work appears to be diverse and eclectic. Can you explain the various aspects of your ceramic art?
I am a multifaceted ceramic artist, and though
use many different types of clay, I mostly focus on either porcelain clay or wild foraged clay. Each clay requires their own set of tools and methods of using and making.
Tell us about the process of creating the vessel you made for Clay Awards.
I chose to use fluid porcelain clay for the vessel I made. It was constructed from a mould I smashed into pieces, of which I selected 25 of the best pieces. I worked and carved at each individual mould piece, gently carving away at the plaster to alter the shape and to add texture.
Does that require some re-assembly in the process?
Yes, I reassembled the mould and, in some parts, marbled blue and black porcelain clay together to add colour. I then removed the vessel from the
mould and added waferthin marbled, empirical wings.
What inspires and delights you about your work?
I’m driven by the challenge of pushing myself and my work to new heights, striving to meet the high standards I’ve set for myself. Ultimately, I hope to see more South African ceramic artists showcased locally and internationally, elevating the profile of our country’s talented ceramic community.
What message do you hope to convey through your ceramic art?
I believe it’s possible to create clay vessels that express deep emotions and convey powerful messages. Clay itself holds deep symbolism, carrying the essence of the earth. As I shape and mould the clay, I aim to tap into this symbolism, allowing the medium to convey meaningful messages through the forms I create.
What advice would you offer to aspiring ceramists or artists looking to establish themselves in the industry?
My advice would be to experiment extensively, learn as much as you can about clay and its properties, and feel free to explore and express yourself through your craft. Most importantly, stay true to your artistic vision and find your unique voice. Authenticity is key to creating meaningful and impactful work.
Are there any ceramists whose work you particularly admire?
Yes, I have great admiration for several ceramists, including Ann Marais, Hennie Meyer, Madoda Fani, and Zizipho Poswa. IB

How did you break into the beauty industry?
I started my beauty blog/website in 2011 before Instagram really took off. I was one of the “lucky ones” to really start documenting my beauty routine and suggestions before influencers were even really looked at as part of the media landscape.
Ahead of your time! Which brands have you worked with?
I have been involved with countless brands from as high-end as La Prairie and Chanel to the more affordable brands like essence and The Body Shop.
What products are currently your favourite?
The Avene Vitamin ACTIV Cg Serum paired with the Avene Cleanance Aqua-Gel are two musthave items in my skincare right now. I have seen incredible improvements in my overall skin health. Make-up wise, the Wet n Wild Photo Focus is my number one favourite. I am never ever without my Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara and some Mac Swiss Chocolate Eye Shadow on my bottom waterline.
Take us through your beauty routine at the moment.
Morning: I do not cleanse in the morning and my skin is all the better for it. I use a serum, day cream, and finish off with an SPF. Evening: Double cleanse, serum, a treatment, if necessary, eye cream, moisturiser. I also try and use sheet masks twice a month.
What tips can you give a person trying to take better care of their skin?
This is the biggest cliché but it is a cliché for a reason: USE SUNSCREEN! Use factor 50 and make sure to apply it to your ears and neck, too.
Sunscreen for the win! Take us through an average day in your life.

emails while enjoying my morning coffee. My daughter then goes off to school, and I try to cram eight hours of work into four hours either from my work office or at home. I fit content creation in during the evenings and if I manage, a gym session, or a run around the block once a week, which I consider a win!
Super mom! Would you say networking and engaging matters in the beauty industry?
Absolutely. The age-old line of “it’s about who you know” is so true. Some of my greatest friends and business connections have been made through networking within this industry. It is so important to work on overcoming your nerves and anxieties and to put yourself out there, both online and in person if you get the opportunity to attend events. Be friendly and polite and engage with your fellow creators.
Which social media platform would you say is great for engaging an audience, and why?
Through my personal account and my business account, Instagram still proves to be the best for engagement. TikTok seems to be full of anonymous keyboard warrior accounts, no matter what the subject matter is! IB

skin resolutions REFLECTING AND SETTING FOR 2025
BY RUAN WINTER
AS WE START THE NEW YEAR, WE LOOK BACK AT THE SKINCARE TRENDS THAT TOOK THE BEAUTY WORLD BY STORM LAST YEAR, WHILST SETTING RESOLUTIONS FOR A GLOWING 2025.
2024 skincare trends
Skinimalism: The minimalist approach to skincare continued to dominate. People embraced simpler routines with fewer, highquality products. The focus was on understanding what their skin truly needed and sticking to it.
Vitaderm’s Multi-Vitamin Treatment Cream is perfect for this trend, offering a nourishing blend of Vitamins A, B3, B5, C, and E to restore skin health with minimal fuss.
Hormonal skincare: As we have a deeper understanding of how hormones affect our skin, products specifically formulated to address hormonal acne and changes during different life stages became more popular.
Anti-inflammatory skincare: Products that calm and soothe irritated skin gained popularity. Ingredients like niacinamide and centella asiatica, known for their soothing properties, became skincare essentials.
Squalane: This hydrating hero continued to shine in the skincare world, known for its ability to lock in moisture and protect the skin barrier.
Vitaderm’s Lipid Complex and Tissue Repair
Complex skin oils contain hemi-squalane, which supports barrier function and locks in skin moisture. These formulations enhance skin’s elasticity and provide deep hydration, contributing to a youthful appearance.
Personalisation: The merging of beauty and technology led to personalised skincare routines, with brands using AI to recommend products based on individual skin needs. Some skincare ranges offer a variety of targeted treatments
like their Brightening Treatment Cream, tailored to address specific skin concerns such as uneven pigmentation.
Skincare resolutions for 2025
Embrace skinstreaming: Simplify your routine even more by focusing on just a few key products that work for you. Quality over quantity!
Stay informed: Keep up with the latest research and trends, but consult professionals, like dermatologists, to ensure the advice you follow is right for your skin type.
Focus on ingredients: Invest in products with proven ingredients like peptides, hyaluronic acid, and squalane that address your specific concerns.
Mind your hormones: If hormonal changes affect your skin, consider products formulated to support skin health during different life stages.
Sustainable choices: Choose brands that prioritise sustainability, from packaging to ingredient sourcing. Your skin and the planet will thank you.
Personalised routines: Use technology to your advantage by seeking personalised skincare advice and products tailored to your unique needs. IB

Have you ever thought about a collaboration with another international designer?
Besides you, who is vital in making sure the end product is what it needs to be?
Earlier this year, I had the honour of being the creative director for the 2024 Steve Madden fashion show. It was an extraordinary experience where I brought my vision to their platform, curating a show that celebrated boldness, innovation, and fashion-forward thinking. This role allowed me to merge our unique aesthetics and create a moment that resonated with a global audience, highlighting the power of collaboration across industries.
How do you foster a narrative of exclusivity and inclusivity through your brand?
Exclusivity comes through meticulous attention to detail, creating limited pieces, and ensuring unparalleled craftsmanship. Inclusivity is achieved by embracing diverse perspectives, body types, and stories in our designs and campaigns.
The Gert ready-to-wear line is an extension of this philosophy, allowing a wider audience to experience the brand while retaining the exclusivity of our couture offerings.
And how do you invest in high-quality materials which enhances the design’s durability whilst also reinforcing its luxury status?
Every piece starts with sourcing the finest materials, whether it’s silk from Italy or crystals from Austria. These materials are chosen for their beauty, durability, and ability to elevate the design. Investing in quality isn’t just about luxury, creating pieces that stand the test of time and becoming heirlooms or cherished additions to a wardrobe.
I have an incredible team of artisans, pattern makers, and seamstresses who bring my vision to life. Their dedication and expertise are vital in transforming a concept into a masterpiece. Collaboration is key, and every person in the studio plays an integral role in ensuring the final product is flawless.
Whilst on that, partnering with celebrities also expands reach and visibility. Which celebrities are you currently in partnership with?
I’m currently working with Nadia Nakai, Pearl Thusi, and Lerato Kganyago. These incredible women embody the sophistication, strength, and glamour that the Gert-Johan Coetzee brand represents. Their influence and unique styles inspire others to connect with the brand, and they help extend its reach to a broader and diverse audience.
What
are you most excited about for the future?
The upcoming launch of my new perfume line is incredibly exciting. The collection will feature five distinct fragrances, each reflecting different facets of individuality and style. These perfumes will be available in a major retail outlet, making them more accessible to a wider audience while still maintaining their luxurious essence.
Additionally, I’m thrilled to announce plans to sell the brand in London. This expansion is a significant step in positioning Gert-Johan Coetzee as a global luxury brand, bringing South African couture to an international market and celebrating our unique stories on a world stage. IB

CONQUER gymtimidation
FIVE EMPOWERING STEPS TO OWN YOUR WORKOUT SPACE
BY LIEZEL VAN DER WESTHUIZEN, KFM
94.5 PRESENTER &
CERTIFIED MENTAL FITNESS & BUSINESS COACH
WALKING INTO A GYM OR A GROUP EXERCISE CLASS CAN FEEL AS NERVEWRACKING AS STEPPING ONTO A STAGE WITHOUT KNOWING YOUR LINES. THE LOUD EQUIPMENT, THE SEA OF SUPER-FIT BODIES, AND THE UNFAMILIAR ROUTINES CAN MAKE ANYONE FEEL OUT OF PLACE - THIS IS WHAT WE CALL “GYMTIMIDATION”.
As someone who tests out a new gym, body-moving activity, and a medley of fitness centres and studios, every week for my feature called The Fitness Guide on KFM94, you’d think I’d be a pro at walking into new spaces, but here’s the truth: that same anxious feeling hits me every single time!
I question everything: Will I be fit enough? Good enough? Am I wearing the right gear? What if I can’t keep up with the group class? I’m guilty of overthinking many things, and with gymtimidation, it always kicks into overdrive. These thoughts became so overwhelming at one point, that I stopped trying new classes altogether. It felt easier to avoid the discomfort than to face it.
If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. However, you don’t have to stay stuck in that cycle. Here’s how I’ve learned to manage these fears and tailor a fitness routine that builds confidence and makes the gym feel less intimidating:
1
Start small with home workouts
Before stepping into a gym, build your foundation at home. Use fitness apps or YouTube tutorials to learn basic exercises like squats, lunges, or push-ups. Familiarity breeds confidence, and practicing movements in a private, comfortable space ensures that you’ll feel more prepared when you decide to go to the gym or join an exercise class.
2
Take a tour and ask questions
Most gyms offer free tours for new members. Use this opportunity to explore the space, ask about equipment, and learn about the gym’s quieter times. Knowing the layout and protocols will reduce your anxiety and make your first visit less overwhelming.
3
Use the “buddy system”
Bring along a friend who’s either experienced or equally new to the gym. Having a workout buddy not only keeps you accountable, but it also makes the experience less isolating. Together, you can navigate machines, share laughs, and celebrate small wins.
4
Create a comfort zone
Here’s a unique tip: designate your “safe space” in the gym. Start with machines or areas you’re comfortable using, like the treadmill or stretching mats. Gradually expand to other equipment as you grow more confident. Remember, everyone was a beginner at some point, and most gym-goers are focused on their own workouts – they’re not judging yours!
5 Reward yourself with fitness milestones
Treat gym visits as acts of self-care. After every session, reward yourself – whether it’s a podcast you’ve saved for cooldowns or a delicious smoothie post-workout. Associating positive outcomes with the gym will help replace fear with excitement. I’m a big fan of this if you ever spot me in training mode!
Final thoughts
Gymtimidation is something many of us face, but it’s not an insurmountable barrier. With small, intentional steps, you’ll find your confidence growing – whether that’s starting with workouts at home, leaning on a supportive friend, or finding your groove in a quiet corner of the gym.
Every rep you try, every stretch you hold, and every time you walk into the gym, you’re proving to yourself that you belong. These small wins add up, building a stronger, more empowered version of you - inside and out. You’ve got this!
And if you ever need a little support, just tune in to me and The Fitness Guide on KFM 94.7fm weekdays. You’ll hear me laugh about my recent fitness try, and offer up coping hacks and awesome insights from the world of gym and fitness! IB
HOW TO BALANCE health and indulgence
BALANCE HEALTH AND INDULGENCE THIS SUMMER. WITH FESTIVE BRAAIS AND FAMILY GATHERINGS, IT’S EASY TO OVERINDULGE. SONAL RATAN, DIETITIAN AT FUTURELIFE, SHARES EXPERT TIPS ON FINDING BALANCE, MAKING MINDFUL CHOICES AND MAINTAINING A HEALTHY ROUTINE WITHOUT SACRIFICING THE FUN.
The festive season may be behind us, but for many of us, we’re still in holiday mode – whether we’re back at work or not. The hot weather and sunshine have us celebrating the summer season with family and friends, and of course, enjoy delicious food and a cocktail here and there.
But, let’s be honest: between lavish dinners, decadent treats, and holiday parties, balancing indulgence with healthy habits can feel like
an impossible challenge. The good news is that Sonal Ratan, Dietitian at FUTURELIFE, says you don’t have to sacrifice your health goals to enjoy the holidays. “With a few smart strategies,” she explains, “It’s possible to find a balance between celebrating without feeling deprived and maintaining your healthy routine.” She shares some valuable tips to help you navigate this period of overindulgence – and still feel great in January.
Pre-party strategy
When you have a dinner or party planned, don’t skip lunch. Arriving hungry can lead to overeating on high-calorie festive fare. Instead, opt for a light meal or meal replacement. A high-fibre, highprotein smoothie is a quick, delicious way to stay satisfied without feeling sluggish. Include some fruit and skim milk or water, blend it all together, and you’ve got a creamy, nutrient-packed meal that keeps hunger at bay. Plus, it’s quick enough to whip up even on busy days.
Don’t hover by the snack table
Snack tables are a magnet for mindless eating
at parties. With tempting appetisers on display, one tasty bite can quickly turn into 10 – especially if you’re chatting close by and not paying attention. The smart approach? Pick a few of your favourites, and then move away to enjoy them. By removing yourself from temptation, you can savour the snacks without going overboard.
Sip smartly
Alcoholic drinks contain several empty calories, and it’s easy to lose track as the festivities unfold. Here are some clever hacks to keep your celebrations on track: Opt for spritzers by mixing your favourite wine with sparkling water, ice, and a slice of fresh fruit for a lighter, refreshing drink. Choose low-calorie mixers like soda water or tonic instead of sugary sodas, and consider using smaller glasses to control intake. Don’t forget to stay hydrated by alternating alcoholic drinks with water – it’s great for your waistline and overall well-being.
Family fitness fun
The summer holidays are all about family time, so if your usual exercise routine has to take a backseat, why not get the whole gang, including house guests, involved? Gather the troops for a walk, plan a family hike, or even challenge each other to a game of volleyball or cricket on the lawn to keep everyone active. It’s a fun way to burn off energy (and calories) while making lasting memories.
It’s about balance, not perfection
“Here’s the thing – the holidays are meant to be enjoyed,” says Ratan. “The goal isn’t perfect eating, it’s finding balance. If you had a big dinner, eat lighter meals the next day. Indulge in that dessert, mince pie or slice of cake – savour it without guilt. Remember, it’s about making mindful choices, not following rigid rules.”
Ratan adds that with a bit of planning, you can celebrate without compromising your healthy lifestyle. IB

Place
Where are you going? Don’t just pick a place because your colleague or friend mentioned it. In today’s digital age, with the internet at your fingertips, research destinations that
resonate with your spirit and current stage of life. If you’re seeking calm and peaceful spots, consider avoiding bustling cities like New York, Ibiza, or Johannesburg. Instead, opt for serene destinations with lush greenery and flowing water, such as Mykonos or the Cape Winelands. You know what you want, so choose accordingly.
Flights
Now that you’ve decided on your destination, it’s time to book your flight. With numerous websites to choose from, finding the best deals can be a challenge. Even with a healthy bank account, who doesn’t love scoring a great special? To snag the

best offers, book your flights well in advance. Typically, January and February are good times to find wonderful specials. Happy booking! By securing your flights, you can check one thing off your list and focus on the next step.
Hotel
You know you are going to need a place to call home whilst away, right? Some people choose to hop between beautiful hotels and Airbnbs to get the best of both worlds whilst on a trip. Hotels offer a unique experience, ambiance, and energy that can vary greatly from one establishment to another. Similarly, Airbnbs provide a distinct atmosphere and experience that can differ significantly from one property to another. This is why many travellers develop preferences and tend to stick with what they know and love.
Travel partners
Travel partners are incredibly important. Bring along people who are easy-going and independent. Those with joyful spirits make experiences more enjoyable, creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere. Avoid exhausting yourself emotionally; this is a time to feel carefree and enjoy yourself. After all, you planned this trip to have fun, not to experience dull moments.
Food
Food! Food! Food! Ditch the familiar fastfood joints and become a culinary explorer, trying new and exciting dishes. However, don’t forget to check the ingredients for any allergens, ensuring peaceful and worry-free dining experiences – no hospital visits, please! Remember, this is your holiday, so don’t feel pressured to try everything. Be selective and stick to what appeals to you. To make the most of your dining experiences, research restaurants in advance, browse their menus, and check out food images online – the internet has made it easier than ever!
Exploring
Activities, people, culture. Now is the time to engage with the people. This is how you will end up exploring so much more, because you befriended locals. It makes the trip more rich and worth it… Search social media platforms like Facebook and Reddit to find local groups and ask them about the must-see spots to get the most of your visit – and who knows, you might make some new friends along the way. RARE & SIGNIFICANT wheels
BY GAVIN PRINS
CERTAIN LUXURY CARS HAVE PROVEN TO BE SAVVY LONG-TERM INVESTMENTS, APPRECIATING SIGNIFICANTLY IN VALUE OVER TIME. THESE UNIQUE VEHICLES MAY NOT BE THE MOST PRACTICAL ITEMS TO COLLECT, BUT THEY HOLD UNDENIABLE ALLURE FOR CAR ENTHUSIASTS. FOR MANY IN THE AUTOMOTIVE WORLD, OWNING AND DRIVING A COVETED CAR IS A DREAM COME TRUE, WITH COLLECTORS OFTEN WILLING TO GO TO GREAT LENGTHS TO ADD ONE TO THEIR COLLECTION.
Given that the automobile was one of the defining influences on the 20th century, the need to preserve the rarest of them makes sense. It’s no coincidence that the collection of over 400 of the very best vintage cars, including two of the six extant Bugatti Royales that were once owned by French textile barons, the Schlumpf brothers, were so significant that the collection eventually became the French National Motor Museum.
The single largest collection of cars is said to belong to the Sultan of Brunei and his brother, Prince Jefri, and is reported to contain over 7 000 vehicles. Mercedes has a warehouse in Stuttgart, Germany, which houses its entire back catalogue, from its very first car. In 2022, Mercedes sold a
1955 Uhlenhaut Coupe from its warehouse of reserve stock to a private collector for $143 million. “Rare and collectable cars are a unique breed, distinct from classic cars,” explains Jake Gore, a board member of Aspire Art, an auction house that recently announced an expansion to rare and collectable cars with the launch of Aspire Collectable Cars.
“While a rare and collectable car can be one produced in the early 1900s, it can equally be a limited-edition vehicle produced in the last decade. Their exclusivity and rarity are a major part of their allure. Some have earned their rare status through historical significance, whether it’s their role in motorsport, a groundbreaking technological advancement, or a connection to a famous individual. An iconic and distinctive
There has been demandgrowing in South Africa for quality,high-rare, authentic, and historically significant cars.
design could also be what sets it apart from its peers, making it highly desirable to collectors,” says Gore.
The rarity premium is what makes rare cars so sought after, he reveals. “Limited production naturally creates scarcity, a key factor driving up prices. Collectors and investors recognise this dynamic, often willing to pay a premium for rare cars, especially those in pristine condition, with distinctive features or that are associated with automotive history or a legendary figure.”
There has been growing demand in South Africa for high-quality, rare, authentic, and historically significant cars. As a dollar-denominated asset, they are easily exportable and have become increasingly attractive assets for both local and international buyers. As part of its commitment to providing access to high quality and rare assets to discerning collectors, Aspire Art is responding to this demand with the launch of a Collectable Car division.
“Before deciding to invest in a rare car, it’s very important that buyers do their homework. The vehicle’s ownership and service history should be available. What condition is the vehicle in? Have any modifications taken place, or is it in its original condition? Is the vehicle part of a limited edition or was it mass produced?” IB

NAME: Vivian Reddy
POSITION: Founder
COMPANY: Edison Corporation
HOW MANY STAFF DO YOU HAVE: 30 to 40 core staff. Depending on the work we do, this number can rise into the thousands.
The journey of Vivian Reddy, FOUNDER OF EDISON CORPORATION
FIRED FROM HIS JOB, VIVIAN REDDY TURNED ADVERSITY INTO OPPORTUNITY BY FOUNDING HIS OWN COMPANY, EVENTUALLY BECOMING THE BILLIONAIRE AND PHILANTHROPIST THAT HE IS TODAY. WHILE HE MAY NOT HOLD THE TITLE OF CEO, HE IS UNDENIABLY THE OWNER. WE SAT DOWN WITH HIM TO GET A SENSE OF THE KIND OF BOSS HE IS.
What inspired you to establish your company, and what were the key factors behind its inception?
I lost my job in regional sales because I invited the hardworking staff, whose efforts were instrumental to the company’s success, to join the main braai area where the premium food and drinks were being served. On Monday morning, I was called in and dismissed. My response was, “One day, apartheid will be over, and I will own the largest electrical power company in the country.”
How would you describe your leadership style, and what principles guide your management?
I believe in being firm yet understanding – there’s no “strict” or “easy.” Trust and dependability are central to how I run my organisations, all built on a foundation of integrity.
How do you typically handle crises within your company?
I face crises head-on! I sit around the table with the stakeholders involved and pick up the phone when necessary. I strongly believe in addressing challenges face-to-face as they arise, regardless of the reason.
How do you address
underperformance in employees while maintaining a positive workplace environment?
I address issues directly, period. However, I exercise compassion because even a good employee can fall short sometimes, but that doesn’t necessarily reflect their overall performance. At my discretion, I allow corrective measures to take their course, within reason. That said, there are instances where I must be decisive. I never leave anyone “out in the cold.” I take the time to understand the reasons behind their struggles because employees need both motivation and firm assurance.
What are your long-term goals for the company, particularly in terms of its growth and contribution to the economy?
We are actively engaged in the property and power industries. We are now preparing to begin our next phase of development, with plans to invest an additional R4.2 billion in KZN – on top of the R4.8 billion I have already invested in the province. I believe that a thriving economy is driven by a culture of investment, especially in infrastructure, as it creates jobs and enables people to participate in the country’s economy.
As large businesses, it is our responsibility to demonstrate confidence by investing in our communities. IB

Ryan Batcher
Business accidents aren’t always a bad thing
Ideas matter, and sometimes trying to prove a point can lead to unexpected success. Ryan Batcher, founder of NetFlorist, South Africa’s largest online gifting company, discovered this firsthand. What began as a one-day experiment to prove a concept turned into a thriving business. Launched on Valentine’s Day in 1999 by Ryan Batcher, Lawrence Brick, and Jonathan Hackner, NetFlorist was never intended to be a full-fledged online floral and gifting company. However, when the site received R30 000 worth of orders on its first day, the founders knew they had stumbled upon something special.

CURBING cyber scamming
BY SENWELO TSIE
IF THERE’S A BETTER TIME TO UNDERSTAND CYBER SCAMMING, IT’S NOW. WITH EVEREVOLVING TECHNOLOGY COMES INCREASINGLY SOPHISTICATED CYBER SCAMMING, AND CRIMINALS ARE BECOMING MORE ADVANCED OVER TIME.
Cyber scamming refers to scams that are perpetrated online, taking various forms such as pharming, spoofing, and phishing – the latter often targeting victims through email. Alarmingly, the World Economic Forum reports that in 2023, online scammers swindled a staggering $1 trillion from unsuspecting victims worldwide.
How do we now protect ourselves from these scammers?
We must always exercise caution when using online sites and be aware of who we are sending money to. There have been incidents of overnight investment scams where people were promised unusually high returns, only to wake up to the terrifying reality that the site had vanished. Tracing such sites is often nearly impossible. Therefore, thoroughly vetting the sites you plan to invest in is crucial. Certain apps, such as Genie, can help detect scams.
Banking, shopping and investment apps require a password setup. It’s imperative that we refrain from creating easy passwords, such as dates
of birth or names of close relatives, as these can be easily hacked by criminals. A few years ago, customers of one of the prominent banks lost money due to mysterious transactions, highlighting the vital importance of creating unique, strong passwords.
In recent months, there has been a rise in scammers who randomly call mobile phones to phish for personal information and use it for their gain. I have personally experienced this and was fortunate enough to quickly end the call when I realised it was a scam. To protect yourself, it’s best to take cautious steps, such as using caller identification apps like Truecaller and CallApp to identify unknown callers. Truecaller has an advanced detector that blocks unwanted calls and SMS.
For organisations, it’s vital that they conduct cybersecurity audits to evaluate the security of their procedures and software, implement a risk-mitigating strategy, and educate employees. According to a Mimecast report, cybercrime is expected to grow by 15% per year over the next two years. Stay alert. IB

MASTERCHEF SA’S YOUNGEST WINNER:
‘I want my own cooking
BY TEMO MPODI
show’
AT JUST 20 YEARS OLD, BRIDGET MANGWANDI BECAME A MILLIONAIRE BY WINNING MASTERCHEF SOUTH AFRICA WITH HER EXCELLENT CULINARY SKILLS. APART FROM DEVELOPING AND MAKING FOOD PRODUCTS, SHE HOPES THAT HER FUTURE WILL ALSO INCLUDE HER OWN TV SHOW.
When Bridget speaks, her words exude elegance and poise. Her family would undoubtedly agree that she’s the star of the show. With a sparkle in her eye, she confesses, “We can say that I am,” her shy reserve momentarily giving way to a hint of pride. Not because she bagged the 2024 MasterChef South Africa title, but It’s an extension of her authentic personality, shining through in every dish she creates. Her passion for elevating everyday food into something extraordinary is infectious. “It’s always a win or lose when experimenting with new ideas and presentation styles,” she admits. “But that’s what makes it exciting.” For Bridget, the art of food styling is just as important as the taste, making each dish a feast for the eyes as well.
Things won’t just fall into my hands, I know I have to work hard for them
Bridget’s philosophy is simple: “Things won’t just fall into my hands, I know I have to work hard for them, whilst also staying patient and trusting that everything is falling into place.” To put this philosophy into practice, Bridget made a conscious effort to put herself out there. “I would get on Google and search for culinary/food competitions that I can enter,” she laughs. “Can you believe I was getting rejected? But everything worked out perfectly as it should.” For Bridget, embracing change is essential. “When I entered MasterChef, I needed change and something exciting in my life, and I thought this could be it.” Ultimately, Bridget believes that success requires a combination of hard work and self-awareness.
“Sometimes who you are works for you, but you also have to put in the work.”
But, there was a moment that even Bridget thought she wouldn’t make it. In the first challenge, the amateur chef found herself on the chopping block as her dish was picked as one of the three worst for the day. “Once you’re in that bottom three you really are feeling your heart in your throat, like it’s not fun at all.”
“In your head, you’re like ‘whose mistake is worse’ literally. The raw dough or my overcooked prawn, that’s what you’re thinking.”
“But when you don’t hear your name it’s like ‘Okay, great we can move on’.” And that’s just what she did… all the way to the finals.
She’s not only the first black woman to hold the title of MasterChef South Africa, but also the youngest. “It’s an inspiring moment to young people, more especially in our culinary field, because we always hear stories of young people breaking grounds in other fields, but in this field, it’s not a thing. We’ve never had that moment.” Bridget also acknowledges that the culinary field is often underestimated. “Some people look down on cooking as a career, but I believe this moment shows that it can be a respected and rewarding profession.” Even though, it holds such an important place in our lives. “Food is a necessity, and it brings people together. A well-organised function isn’t complete without good food.”
Allowing herself to spread her wings has been so vital in life and continues to be. Bridget is determined to be the best version of herself. And if any TV producers are reading this: she wants a cooking show. “I definitely want to have products on shelves and have my own cooking show. Anything is possible, we just need to put in the hard work while also believing.” IB

BY MILOU STAUB
Fierce, Fun + Fab
Dear Self, You know how impatient and pushy you are – classic Aries energy, always on the go, never standing still and constantly needing to know what’s next. It’s like you’re always in the fast lane, trying to steer the wheel of everything. And yet, how beautifully the divine aligned the universe to put you and Johan on the same path. You couldn’t have known back then that he would be the gentle influence you didn’t even know you needed. You’ve already mastered self-care, your fitness routine, and how to manage your inner child when those triggers hit. But somehow, there was one last piece of the puzzle missing: faith.
Lessons from howJohan: patience
and faith found me
Me: “Did you smile at least once today?”
Him: “Yes, definitely.”
Me: “Isn’t that what it’s all about?”
Him: “Amongst other things, yes.”
Me: “Give me one more example.”
Him: “Making other people smile.”
To you, faith isn’t just about religion; it’s about being inspired to follow the divine in whatever shape or form that takes – whether it’s spirituality, belief in God, the universe, or something higher than yourself. You’ve always been curious about diving deeper into that world, but you didn’t know where to start, when, or how. And then, along comes Johan – someone you don’t know from a bar of soap, but who, through your quiet observations, has become a beacon of light for you.
Johan is the last person you’d expect to spark your curiosity about faith. Despite his struggles, he’s found healing in it, and it’s moving to witness. It makes you wonder what he’s been through and how
it’s shaped him. His strength in setting boundaries, his unwavering priorities and the way he carries himself with grace and confidence have given you the push to set your own boundaries in life. He’s quietly teaching you the importance of slowing down, trusting the process and giving time the time it deserves –lessons you’ve long needed to learn.
The lesson you need to remember here is to not overlook the people who don’t behave the way you do. Be curious about those who move through the world with a calm that you might not understand. Stop being obsessed with the sound of your own voice, take a breather, and listen to what others have to say.
Johan, thanks a million. We barely know each other, yet somehow, you’ve managed to teach me more than I ever expected. Your wisdom, which I’m guessing came from some serious life rollercoasters, has been a total gift. You’ve let me be myself while quietly showing me a better way to live, and for that, I’m deeply grateful.
Takeaway tip: Isn’t this what faith is all about?
Unconditionally sharing your wisdom with others, expecting nothing in return, just because it’s the right thing to do? Johan, you’ve got that down without even trying.
Feeling Blessed, Milou

YOUR SMART, STYLISH EVERYDAY SIDEKICK
BY JUHI RAMPERSAD
THE APPLE WATCH ISN’T JUST ANOTHER GADGET – IT’S LIKE HAVING A PERSONAL ASSISTANT, HEALTH COACH AND STYLE UPGRADE ALL ROLLED INTO ONE. SINCE I STARTED WEARING IT, I’VE BEEN IMPRESSED BY HOW EFFORTLESSLY IT FITS INTO MY DAILY LIFE, KEEPING ME ON TRACK WHILE LOOKING SERIOUSLY SLEEK. HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER MAKING THIS DEVICE YOUR NEW COMPANION.
Design and comfort
First off, it looks amazing. The design is modern and minimalist, with endless ways to customise it – swap the watch face or change the strap, and suddenly, it’s a whole new vibe. It’s also ridiculously comfortable. I wear it all day, whether I’m at work, working out, or curled up on the couch, and I barely notice it’s there. The screen? Vibrant, sharp, and easy to read, even in glaring sunlight. No squinting required.
Health and fitness features
If you’re trying to prioritise your health, this watch is a game-changer. It tracks pretty much everything – steps, calories burned, heart rate, blood oxygen levels – you name it. The workout modes are super versatile, whether you’re pounding the pavement or flowing through a yoga session. And let’s talk about those activity rings. They’re oddly addictive and actually motivate me to move more without feeling preachy. The mindfulness and sleep-tracking apps have also been great for helping me slow down and find balance.
Productivity and connectivity
As someone constantly juggling work and life,
the Apple Watch has been a lifesaver. I love that I can check notifications, reply to texts, or even take calls without having to dig my phone out of my bag. It’s a subtle way to stay connected without getting sucked into my screen. Plus, the calendar and reminders apps keep me organised, and Siri makes it easy to set tasks or find quick answers.
Battery life
Okay, let’s be real – the battery life isn’t groundbreaking. It lasts about a day and a half, which means charging it every night is a must. But it’s not a deal-breaker for me. The fastcharging feature is a bonus – I can top it up in no time and get on with my day.
Final verdict
The Apple Watch has made my life easier in so many little ways, from tracking my health to keeping me productive and even adding a touch of style to my wrist. It’s more than just a smartwatch – it feels like an extension of me. Sure, the battery life could be better, but everything else more than makes up for it. If you’re after a wearable that’s as smart as it is stylish, the Apple Watch might just be your perfect match. IB
BOOK REVIEW
Broken to Heal
Alistair Izobell R200 (Self-published)
What is it about?
With life in the public eye, Alistair battled unseen demons that led him into the shadows of mental anguish. He was unaware that he was suffering from depression, feeling increasingly burdened by the weight of expectation and the trauma of life.
Why should people read the book?
The book is a product of therapy sessions and a sincere desire for healing, inviting readers to join him on a journey through his life as not just an entertainer, but as a son, husband, father, and friend. He aims to lift the veil on the emotional rollercoaster that people in the public eye experience, encouraging audiences to reflect on the raw humanity behind the artistic facade.
