ACTRESS CHANTELLE GERTSE VICTOR DOES HOLLYWOOD

CONTINUING MADIBA’S LEGACY ZELDA LA GRANGE

Editor’s

LET THE MADIBA MAGIC FLOW THIS JULY

BILLIONAIRE ZUNAID MOTI RECENTLY INVITED ME TO HELP HIM HAND OUT BLANKETS TO THOSE IN NEED. THEN A MEDICAL EMERGENCY TESTED OUR WILLINGNESS TO HELP.

It was a community centre in Vrededorp, Johannesburg, where we handed out 2 200 blankets to poor people. Kids stood in one line for sweeties and adults in another for blankets. Everything went smoothly until we heard a commotion. One of the men standing in line experienced a seizure.

Without thinking twice, we (myself and the Moti Group employees) raced to the man lying on the floor to assist him. It is one thing to give someone food or money, but quite another thing to physically touch someone in need – something the late Princess Diana got into trouble with from the Palace.

I instantly thought about a documentary I had seen in which Mother Teresa said: “It’s not about how much you do, but how much love you put into what you do that counts.”

This month is International Nelson Mandela Day, when we are reminded to give to those in need. In this issue, (among the other amazing stories we have) former Pres. Nelson Mandela’s personal assistant, Zelda La Grange reminds us of why we should be giving more this Mandala Day and how it feeds our soul.

But, dearest gentle reader (said in Julie Andrews’ Bridgerton voice), I want to leave you with Madiba’s words: “Hope is a powerful weapon when all else is lost.”

Stay warm.

THIS MONTH’S BURNING QUESTION…

Are hourly hotel rooms only for illicit activities?

ANSWER:

No. Hourly rooms at rentals cater to a variety of needs, including short stays for business travellers, tourists with tight itineraries, and individuals seeking a temporary respite during a layover. These rooms provide flexibility and convenience, allowing guests to pay only for the hours they need, without any hidden agendas or negative assumptions.

A NUDIST COLONY

Western Cape. We found a place online and booked it. After the function, we drove to Tulbach and stopped for coffee. The coffee shop owner asked us if we were in town for pleasure. We said that we had come for a wedding and told her where we were staying. She had a very strange look on her face. My husband said we hope it is a decent place. At the gates of the accommodation, it said no under 21s. When the owner greeted us only wearing a beach sarong, we started to realise something was up. It was when I walked to the ablution block and walked past the other visitors that our suspicion was confirmed, we had found ourselves at a nudist colony! We could not stop giggling.

ALMOST MISSED MY SHIP

SPIKED DRINK

Exploring Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, I wandered through a maze of narrow alleys, eventually stumbling upon a hidden courtyard. Here, a lively street festival was in full swing. Locals, masked and dressed in elaborate costumes, beckoned me to join their celebration. They handed me a goblet of sangria, insisting it was a traditional welcome drink. I took a cautious sip, but it tasted off. Moments later, my vision blurred, and I felt dizzy. Panicked, I realised I’d been drugged. Struggling to stay conscious, I saw my phone and wallet being snatched before everything went black. I awoke hours later in a back alley, disoriented and alone, with no sign of the festival or my belongings. It was a chilling reminder to always stay vigilant.

My husband and I were invited to a wedding in Tulbach,

I worked on the ships and we were in Thailand. After a night out, I hired a motorbike taxi to take me back to the ship. I knew something was up when the surroundings did not look familiar. When we stopped, it was confirmed. We were at the wrong port! After pleading with the driver to take me to the right port, he refused. He left me right there, stranded. I needed to get to my ship in a hurry, so it was a relief to find another scooter taxi willing to take me to the right port. Fortunately, the ship had waited for me. Just as I stepped on it, we sailed. JD Engelbrecht, Kirrwiller, France

ARRESTED ON EGYPT AIR FLIGHT

I was arrested on Egypt Air by the air marshal. I had snuck Jägermeister in a Barbie bottle onto the aeroplane because you are not allowed to consume alcohol on their flights. I started dancing on my chair after drinking and then the air marshal arrested me. Everyone started to panic but I ended up making such good friends with him that I spent the whole night in business class with the guy. I had a lekker sleep.

Q A& with

Teamwork is key! NO LEADER CAN SOLVE ALL PROBLEMS:

Having been at UMP since the early days of the University, what are your key highlights as the founding ViceChancellor ten years on?

To begin with, it has been very rewarding to observe the student numbers growing from 169 in 2014 to 10 191 in 2024. Our academic programmes have increased from 3 in 2014 to 72 in 2014, ranging from Higher Certificates to Doctoral Degrees. We have produced 6 000 graduates, with 223 awarded cum laude. The percentage of academic staff with doctoral degrees has increased from 5% in 2014 to 55% in 2024. The number of NRF-rated researchers has increased from 1 in 2014 to 15 in 2024. We have constructed iconic buildings and state-of-the-art facilities, including the 4-star Tfokomala Hotel and Conference and Wellness Centre.

From an institutional point of view, what unique attributes would you like your graduates to possess?

We seek to produce graduates who are:

• Resourceful, responsive and responsible

• Critical thinkers and knowledgeable

• Innovative and entrepreneurial

• Effective communicators

• Ethically and socially aware change agents

• Adaptable

What strategies are in place to ensure strong relationships between staff and students?

Our values of Excellence, Integrity, Collaboration, Diversity, Adaptability, Relevance and Inspiration are the guardrails that ensure that a sense of

pride and belonging is engendered among staff and students so that we collectively understand what we are all about and what UMP expects from all of us.

What new initiatives have you implemented to improve the performance of the institution?

UMP has introduced performance management in the form of the Promotion, Development and Reward of Excellence (PDRE) system. While rewarding excellence, this system is also developmental in approach. The integration of values-adherence assessment in the PDRE has enhanced its effectiveness.

How would you describe the inclusivity and diversity on campus?

Diversity is one of our key values. We are open to different views, perspectives and opinions; we embrace social justice and inclusion, and we ensure exposure to different experiences and cultures. Diversity is embraced and celebrated as a value.

Under your leadership, what are the initiatives that your institution has taken to advance transformation?

I have supported initiatives such as the HERS SA Academy, where we have been sending between two and four women to participate in their women empowerment programme. I have participated in this programme as a speaker, motivating women to aspire to the highest levels of higher education. We have participated in some Department of Higher Education and Training transformation initiatives such as the

New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) and Future Professors Programme. One of the initiatives we introduced at UMP in 2021 is the Academic Talent Stewardship Programme. Talented students interested in pursuing an academic career are recruited after completing the Honours programme. They are appointed as Academic Talent Stewardship Programme (ATSP) Fellows and Associate Lecturers for three years. At the end of the three years, we expect them to have completed their Masters degrees and be working towards their Doctoral degrees. They get confirmed after three years and are appointed permanently as Lecturers. We have appointed 15 ATSP Fellows, and 4 of them have recently been confirmed as Lecturers.

How important are strategic partnerships for UMP, and what value do they have to UMP

Strategic partnerships are essential to advancing the University’s core missions in teaching and learning, research innovation and engagement. In teaching and learning, partnerships contribute to curriculum development, co-teaching, external examiners and guest seminars. In research and innovation, partnerships contribute to joint research projects, co-supervision and joint publications. These collaborative relationships contribute to research productivity, quality and impact. Our postgraduate students in Agriculture have had the opportunity to present conference papers at an international conference organised by the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest, Romania. Our students have participated in entrepreneurship competitions through our partnership with universities in Asia. In 2022, the UMP Team won the Best Pitch Award at the Entrepreneurship Summit at the Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation in Kuala Lumpur. In May 2024, the UMP Team won the Vertical on Health and Wellness at the University Incubator Consortium Ideathon 2024 in Puerto Princesa in the Philippines.

What is your approach to problemsolving?

My approach is informed by the perspective that no leader can solve all the problems. Therefore, teamwork is vital in problem-solving. I understand the importance of the ability to ask the right questions. Bolstered by my training as a Clinical Psychologist, I have learnt to listen with both ears to what is said and to what is not said. Paying attention to non-verbal communication and listening with empathy is essential. Problem-solving requires listening to both sides of the story before taking action. It is crucial to exercise urgency, impartiality and agency when problem-solving.

In several of your speeches, you continuously reference ’luhambo lwemhlahlandlela. How did the idea of ’luhambo lwemhlahlandlela come about, and what does it mean in your academic leadership journey?

The idea of “luhambo lwemhlahlandlela” means the “Pioneering Journey”. As the Founding Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mpumalanga, I was mindful of the historic responsibility placed on us as the pioneering staff of the University and that we were shaping the future of UMP. During my inauguration on May 30, 2015, I made the following statement:

“Pioneers have to build a firm foundation, mindful that what they are creating should be durable, marketable, sustainable and enduring. Generations yet unborn must find a thriving University, one they will be proud to join, because we who pioneered it laid a firm foundation, and got into this immense project with body, mind and soul”. I was, therefore, acutely aware of the enormous responsibility and privilege of being a pioneer leader at the newly established University. The enormity of the task did not escape me, and my commitment to the pioneering role has been unwavering. IB

40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS FOR SINGER

Neil Sandilands

ACTOR/SINGER NEIL SANDILANDS IS BACK IN SA AFTER ATTENDING THE PREMIERE OF HIS LATEST MOVIE, KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. NEIL AND HIS BAND ARE CURRENTLY ON A 40 DAY TOUR OF THE COUNTRY.

The EMMY-nominated actor and SAMAnominated musician has confirmed he and his band (Schalk Joubert, Frank Freeman & Ronan Skillen) will once again embark on a nationwide tour.

As promised, all arrangements are in place, venues have been confirmed, and audiences now have immediate access to the tour schedule, as well as ticket links for these shows. The tour spans 40 days & 40 nights, and

audiences can look forward to 35 performances across the length and breadth of our country.

Sandilands, speaking from Los Angeles where he attended the premiere of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (May 10th release), said the “Land & Sand” tour in his country of birth holds the same value for him as an international premiere. The tour started in June and concludes on 4 August at The Alma Café in Cape Town.

The musical works come from

Sandilands’ well-known albums Sangoma Sandilands & Jou Pa se Posse, Allegaarkie vir ’n Askeet, Die Groot 5, Die Groot Niks, as well as new material that has never been recorded. “It will be the first time I sing brand-new songs before they appear on an album. It’s very exciting!”

“It’s the best thing you can do for yourself this winter. Treat yourself to an evening of Neil Sandilands & Die Band, and let’s chat up a storm (Land & Sand)!” he jokes. Hence the title of the tour. IB

Breaking records

In July 2013, during her The Truth About Love Tour, Pink broke two records at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia, becoming the artist who had performed the most shows at the venue, with 18 sold-out shows, and the first artist to sell more than 250,000 tickets at the venue.

KNOW YOUR JULY MUSIC HISTORY!

From truck driver to becoming king

In July 1953, truck driver Elvis Presley made his first ever recording when he paid $3.98 at the Memphis recording service singing two songs, ‘My Happiness’ and ‘That’s When Your Heartaches Begin’. The so-called vanity disc was a gift for his mother. It would surface 37 years later as part of an RCA compilation called ‘Elvis - the Great Performances’.

July celebrity weddings

Forget about February. July was the month of love for some celebrities. Abba’s Bjorn and Agnetha got married in this month in 1971 when 3,000 fans caused chaos at the wedding. Ozzy Osbourne married Sharon in this month in 1982; Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown got hitched in 1992 and Spice Girl Victoria Adams married soccer star David Beckham at an Irish castle in 1999.

5 MINUTES WITH Chris Forrest

CLAIM TO FAME: Actor & Comedian

What projects have you got lined up this year?

I have a lot, mostly science and history with my kids. It’s tragic when as an adult you put in huge effort and your Grade 5 only gets a C, but it’s better than the D I used to get. So I’ve obviously improved as an adult. More importantly, though, I’m working on putting together the absolute best braai festival in South Africa, aka “The Ultimate Braai Master Live”. We had our inaugural event last year, and as a passionate braaier myself, I loved it. This year is going to be bigger and better and I can’t wait. There’s braai food, braai gadgets, braai demos braai comedy, braai beer, braai wine, other braai booze.

Which do you find funnier? British or American humour?

Both. The assumption behind the question is dry, intelligent humour vs slapstick, but I’ve seen a lot of American comics & sitcoms doing high-brow stuff. I’ve also watched Benny Hill get chased around by random ladies, but before I start ranting, the short answer, if I had to choose, is British; I completely loved series such as Monty Python and Fawlty Towers the first time I saw them.

What city did you travel to the last and how did you find it?

Sydney. I found it easy. The pilot did most of the work, I just got on the plane. I was there for The Sydney Comedy Festival and Meatstock (a BBQ and Music festival) and I loved both. The city is like Cape Town on steroids, super well-

run and efficient (although there is no giant mountain to help with navigation. It was a bit weird how organised it all was, and weirder still that a part of me missed the chaos. I started to feel a bit homesick, so the friend I was staying with turned off all the lights for two hours and mugged me, that helped a lot.

Despite our challenges in SA, what about our country can we still be grateful for?

Being alive… No, seriously, we have so much that I love. We have so many diverse cultures and interesting people, this means we’ll always be open-minded, and willing to listen to new ideas and alternative points of view. We have a lot of challenges, but this has made South Africans more resilient and innovative than most. South Africans have the best sense of humour, and our ability to laugh at ourselves is unparalleled. We have a beautiful country with so much in terms of landscape and biodiversity and I truly believe, as a population, we have our differences, but if we stand together and strive for a common goal, we’ll be unstoppable, the Springboks are proof of this. WHEN ONE CUP OF SOUP BECAMES 5500 cups a day

IT WAS A COLD AFTERNOON IN JULY 2014, IN LONG STREET, CAPE TOWN. I CAN’T REMEMBER WHAT THE GUY LOOKED LIKE EXCEPT THAT HE HAD A DREADLOCK HAIRSTYLE AND WAS WRAPPED IN A DIRTY DUVET AND SHOUTING CRAZILY AT THE WORLD.

Iwalked up to him, noticing that this homeless man was in a crazy head space. I asked him if he wanted a cup of soup and he replied ‘’Yes, please”. As a restaurant owner, I had soup in our kitchen. After I gave it to him, he said, “Thank you”. I can’t explain why I decided to walk up to him, but it was like an intuitive gut feeling that made me go and offer him the soup. I was intimidated by him, but the ‘’Godly’’ voice kept me walking towards him. After the man had the soup, he became calmer, and the shouting stopped.

It was after this interaction that I decided to start a soup kitchen. So, a week later, I served my very first pot of soup outside my restaurant in the city. One soup kitchen became four kitchens weekly which became 15 000 cups a month and so, Ladles of Love was born.

The charity also began to help other organisations with nutrition for the people they were caring for. In 2015, I learned that kids were going

to school hungry, so I began supporting them with food supplies to cook for their children.

Ladles Of Love will be celebrating its 10th birthday this year and will continue to drive volunteering, creating impact and touching many peoples’ lives with love, dignity and respect. This was an inspirational moment for me as all my life I was told that we must give to get back in return.

Ladles of Love exploded and within weeks was sending out 50 tons of food weekly to those in need. Today, Ladles of Love has become one of the most prolific organisations tackling food insecurity and supporting education through nutrition. We live in an unequal society where there are people who have and people who don’t have, and kindness is caring for those around you; caring for the environment, for everyone and everything on the planet. So, if you are able to give, to help and you can, please do. It’s the principle of kindness and love. IB

DO WHAT YOU CAN, WITH WHAT YOU HAVE!

SOUTH AFRICA FINDS ITSELF YET AGAIN IN A POSITION FOR WHICH THE ENTIRE WORLD ADMIRES US. FOLLOWING THE 2024 NATIONAL ELECTIONS, PARTIES FROM ACROSS THE POLITICAL SPECTRUM HAVE DECIDED TO WORK TOGETHER TO FORM A GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL UNITY. IF THERE IS ONE NATION THAT KNOWS HOW AND WHEN TO SET THEIR DIFFERENCES ASIDE AND FIND A COMMON PURPOSE IT IS SOUTH AFRICA.

South Africans have spoken at the voting stations indicating that we all want to see change. No party received an outright majority and citizens want to see reforms in both the private and public sectors to address our most serious societal ills like poverty, unemployment and fighting crime and corruption. Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa said during his Inauguration speech that we either now work together or stand to lose everything we have built up to now. Never a truer word was spoken, and I feel exceptionally proud that our nation has progressed to this point in history.

However, this is not a task we can leave to politicians and government, labour or business to achieve. It requires ordinary people to emulate the spirit of working together, to help wherever we can, to achieve our goals. If solutions to our socio-economic issues are not fast-tracked, we may see unrest that could potentially derail what politicians are trying to achieve, a country that works for absolutely everyone.

As we celebrate Mandela Day in July, it again provides an opportunity for us ordinary people to exercise goodwill in giving back to the less

fortunate. This year, more than ever, we should be prepared to get our hands dirty and support the initiative of rebuilding our country in our individual ways.

Apathy and helplessness have become part of many privileged people’s hymn books. When they find me on the street, they often bemoan the state of the country. I always remind them that Madiba believed that if he just touched one person’s life each day with an act of goodwill, he could change the world. We know from history he achieved exactly that.

Now International Nelson Mandela Day comes at an ideal time for us to organise, network and focus on what we can do to support the issues on our national agenda.

Mandela Day was not established with the idea

that only those with resources or influence could participate. It is a call to action for every individual. “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are” as they say.

This particular moment in our history appeals to every citizen to answer that call. Lend a hand, make peace with an enemy, and care for elders or vulnerable children as it is often the actions that cost nothing that bring about the biggest change.

One of the endearing lessons I learnt from Nelson Mandela is that doing good is also good for one’s own soul. It makes one feel worthy and almost feels like it justifies your own existence.

Let us all build the country of our dreams and a society to be proud of by giving back our valuable time during Mandela Day. IB

A FLOOD OF CHILDHOOD MEMORIES Peaches & Herb

IF IT HAPPENED TODAY, MOST CHILDREN WOULD BE EMBARRASSED AND RUN TO THE NEXT ROOM. BUT IN THE 70S AND 80S, KIDS GREW ACCUSTOMED TO OUR PARENTS RANDOMLY, WITHOUT WARNING, DANCING IN THE HOUSE. AND MY HOUSE WAS NO DIFFERENT. WE WOULD SIT AS A FAMILY AND MY DAD, WILLIAM, WOULD PUT HIS COFFEE CUP ASIDE, GET UP, GRAB MY MOM, PAULINE, AND DANCE WHEN A SONG OF PEACHES & HERB CAME ON.

When William was not home, Pauline would grab a broom and dance in the kitchen.

For the millennials reading this, Peaches & Herb was one of the most popular musical duo’s of the 70s and 80s, with hits like “Reunited”, “Close Your Eyes” and “Remember” topping the charts in those days. Herb Fame has a distinctive, mellow voice and has spent his long career picking Peaches and making great records. Over the years, we have seen seven Peaches.

So, imagine waking up one morning and realising I would interview Peaches & Herb that day. The duo is in SA for their national tour. No amount of coffee could calm my nerves. I dressed up. I even borrowed heels from my colleague, Taryn. And off I went.

I walked into the Prive Lounge at Grandwest in Cape Town. There they were: Peaches, looking dazzling, makeup on point. Next to her, Herb is in casual gear after a workout in the gym. Yes, at 81 years old, and he still keeping fit. Hugs and pleasantries were exchanged, and then we went right into it.

He felt humbled when I told him how my parents danced to their music. And I had to hold back the tears telling them how, when William and Pauline died, I had found healing in their songs. But we were here to talk about them.

What do your fans not know about you? I asked Herb. “I hope they know I love women... and my music was made for making babies.” Well, we were seven children in my family. Say no more! Anyway, moving on.

Herb’s humble yet inspiring music journey started at a young age in the church and later led him to explore other musical avenues. Young Herb worked at a record store in Washington D.C., dreaming of his big break, which changed one day when he made a bold move and did an impromptu audition at the time when Van McCoy walked into the store. The rest, as they say, is history. Herb went from being a backup singer to a main act on tour with Peaches.

Peaches & Herb has existed (with breaks) for over five decades; but all has not been smooth sailing. Challenges have presented themselves, but as Herb and Wanda confidently agreed, overcoming them would not have been possible without strong family support and faith.

As our interview come to an end, Herb shared some wisdom for aspiring artists: “Never stop believing in yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. Always be prepared for opportunities.”

I had to know what draws them to our beautiful

city every time. Herb and Wanda just smiled and said Cape Town feels like home with its warm embrace and loving atmosphere. Herb joked that as soon as they leave, he asks when they can return. I suggested they could not leave Cape Town without experiencing our famous Gatsby. “I will try and add it to our to-do list,” he said.

Meeting Peaches & Herb was more than just an interview; it was a magical moment I’ll cherish forever. IB

Did you know?
Their hit song “Reunited” was a massive success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1979. It became one of those songs that defined romance during its time, and it’s still a classic choice for weddings and romantic occasions today.

THE ULTIMATUM

MARRY OR MOVE ON

IN MARRIAGE, ONE PLUS ONE EQUALS ONE. NOT TWO. THE RECIPE FOR SOUTH AFRICA’S LATEST REALITY SHOW ULTIMATUM SA IS CLEAR – YOU BRING YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER ON THE SHOW WITH ONE ULTIMATUM: ‘MARRY ME OR I MOVE ON’. TEMO MPODI PICKED A FEW CHARACTERS FROM THE SHOW TO LOOK OUT FOR.

The bold one

Ruth is bold and confident and exudes fun. Her personality is warming and beautiful. She doesn’t shy away from being her authentic self, and there is no pretence in who she is. You can easily tell this is her on and off-camera. She issued an ultimatum to her partner, Isaac, and the show ended with the couple parting ways, which I was glad happened. You could see that she had poured herself out and given her all in the relationship, but it just wasn’t working out. At some point, I was convinced she was going to leave the show in a relationship with Nolla (Lebo ‘s partner), but red flags flew by, and besides that, Nolla and Lebo cut their stay short.

The peacemaker

Aiden was best at maintaining harmony and calming people down when emotions went high. We thank him because otherwise, things could have deteriorated in some episodes. He found himself comforting people, and that was very warming to watch. He came across as an accommodating person, who sympathises with people and situations and creates time to listen to other people. We hope these qualities serve him well beyond the reality show.

The focused one

We are giving this title to Aiden’s partner, Courtney. She went into the show well-focused and knew that she wasn’t going to open up to any other person and have the full experience of getting to know another man on a deep emotional level. She knew it was going to be a

waste of time, and I love that. That space was sacred for her man alone. First of all, she gave the ultimatum, and I believe she went in to wait for her man to make the decision, get advice, and see how to strengthen her relationship from the pointers she took from the show. She was focused.

The sweetheart

We couldn’t choose between Lindile and Lebo. Lindile is so sweet, a softly-spoken person who just loves having a good time, and her laughter is heartwarming and delightful to watch. Luckily for her, she has a partner who appreciates her and sees the heart of gold she has. The couple announced that they will be getting married before the end of this year (2024). Lebo, on the other hand, has incredible emotional intelligence and composure. We’re happy she recognised her worth and left her then-partner. She deserves better.

The Make You Feel Good

Sizakeli is the kind of man you need by your side as a woman. A man who is sure about what he wants, cares for his woman and helps her with everything. The truth is, times have changed, and while women tend to be the ones who run the household, they need help. From this point of view, Lindile is in really good hands. We saw Sizakeli support Thabi. There was a scene where they were at the gym, and he was patient with her, since she was out of her comfort zone. It speaks volumes. A little gesture goes a long way for women.

While we are at it, we hope you pick one trait to exercise this week in your world. You can choose to face this week bold or focused. I am choosing the Make You Feel Good and running with it just not for the week, but for the entire month. IB

CONTEMPORARY ARTIST MICHAEL HEYNS HAD HIS ART REGISTER STOLEN.

Michael’s WHERE ARE

black swans?

CONTEMPORARY

ARTIST MICHAEL HEYNS DOESN’T KNOW WHO HAS HIS FOUR PAINTINGS OF THE BLACK SWANS, AND HE MIGHT NEVER KNOW. A CROOKED ART DEALER STOLE HIS ART REGISTER MANY YEARS AGO, HE TELLS MONIQUE STRYDOM.

The black swans are not the creatures as we know them with long, slender necks. These swans have their heads tucked away under their wings. They are black swans hidden in shapes. As an art collector, I met Michael at Alice Art Gallery in Ruimsig, Johannesburg.

Michael, who lives in Pretoria, looks sad as he talks about his black swans. Every painting he has painted or will paint is an extension of himself, of his life. He only paints things from his own experience. The pomegranates from his childhood. The koi fish and the magnolias from his garden. The poppies he grew himself to entice the bees. The “nonnetjieuil” is a reminder of two sweethearts who saved for months to buy their first art – a sculpture of a little owl. The butterflies and the moonflower have their own stories.

Years ago, his wife commissioned him to paint a lotus flower. Staying true to himself, he planted and grew the lotus seed to full blossom and only then could he start with the commission.

Who is the man in his paintings? It is a reflection of him. It took a near-death experience for him to ignore the instruction from commercial galleries not to paint figures. The angel-like, square-faced man has an omnipresence, capturing peace in the moment of seeing death.

Michael is one of the very few contemporary South African artists who has managed to build a commercial following. He has been painting for a living for more than forty-four years. At the time he started, it was unheard of for a man to make a living out of art. He urges young artists to focus on consistency and workmanship: the recipe he followed to become one of South Africa’s most successful commercial contemporary artists.

However, his art is not about making money. It is about giving purpose. It is about trusting his gut and going into a conversation with the canvas. He works on five to six pieces at the same time. Starting with charcoal lines, followed by a base of oil and then “having a ball with colour”. The olive greens, indigo, crimson and transparent gold oak are recognisable of his work.

He doesn’t want to own the Mona Lisa; he prefers The Scream and Andy Warhol’s Elvis. Being displayed in a museum is not of importance to him. Compromising is not an option. Creating art that speaks to people through workmanship, consistency and unique colours is what makes him happy.

What else would make him happy? Seeing the black swans again; just one more time. That would make him very happy. IB

Sensing Technology A GAME-CHANGER FOR CHILDREN LIVING WITH DIABETES

In today’s fast-paced work environments, it has become easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of work and daily life. But what if we introduce you to day trips that can help you recharge and refocus? Welcome recharge trips to your schedule.

Thankfully, with advances in technology, wearable sensing technology is now available to individuals with type 1 diabetes. the FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitor is a small (R5 coin-sized) discreet sensor placed on the back of the upper arm, and glucose levels are measured every minute without using fingersticks. I’ve had experience in my practice with children using this and have seen how sensing technology can improve the quality of life for people with diabetes.

The ability to constantly track glucose levels is life-changing for schoolchildren living with type 1 diabetes, their parents, teachers, myself, and the rest of the healthcare team. You’re better equipped to make accurate management decisions when you understand what goes on inside your body and how certain variables affect your glucose levels.

Sensing technology allows schoolchildren to quickly and painlessly check their glucose levels, as they can scan the sensor over clothing. Teachers can easily monitor the child’s glucose levels and look for potentially dangerous high or low readings. Parents can also remotely monitor their child’s glucose levels via the LibreLinkUp app, which brings peace of mind.

Furthermore, sensing technology allows children with type 1 diabetes to participate safely in sports and gives them more freedom to make independent food choices. My

paediatrician and endocrinologist colleagues and I are also able to monitor glucose data remotely, allowing us to make tailored treatment decisions.

Research studies have shown that sensing technology can significantly improve glucose control1 which, when maintained, can lead to a long, healthy life for diabetes sufferers. It should also be noted that adequate glucose control and prevention of diabetes-related complications will significantly lower healthcare costs and relieve strain on the overburdened and under-resourced South African healthcare system2,3

Sadly, not all children with type 1 diabetes can afford sensing technology, and only a few medical aids, Discovery and Bonitas, for example, are willing to cover these costs. Please speak to your healthcare professional and medical assistance for more information. I hope that one day, all children with type 1 diabetes in South Africa will have access to sensing technology. IB

RECHARGE TRIPS

SHORT BREAKAWAYS HELP BOOST

PRODUCTIVITY AND FOCUS

IN TODAY’S FAST-PACED WORK ENVIRONMENTS, IT HAS BECOME EASY TO GET CAUGHT UP IN THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF WORK AND DAILY LIFE. BUT WHAT IF WE INTRODUCE YOU TO DAY TRIPS THAT CAN HELP YOU RECHARGE AND REFOCUS? WELCOME RECHARGE TRIPS TO YOUR SCHEDULE.

Recharge trips are short, intentional journeys designed to help you unwind, relax, and refuel. After constantly pushing through exhaustion, trying to meet deadlines and keeping up with the demands of our busy schedules, a recharge trip can be as simple as a weekend getaway to a nearby city, a quick escape to a nearby nature reserve, or a weekend camping adventure, waking up to a stunning view in the Drakensberg mountains or Hartbeespoort dam, for example. The key is to take a step back, unplug, and permit yourself to take a breather.

Taking a break from the constant stimulation of work and daily life improves brain function and boosts your productivity and focus! But there are a few other benefits:

• Reduce stress and anxiety.

• Improve your focus and productivity.

• Boost your creativity and problem-solving skills.

• Enhance your overall well-being and happiness.

• Lastly, inspire your imagination.

So, where should you go on your recharge trip? The possibilities are endless! You can consider a peaceful beach town, a scenic hiking trail, a cultural city-break or a cultural immersion. The most important thing is to choose a destination that resonates with you and allows you to disconnect from the hustle and bustle. Recharge trips are the perfect antidote to productivity and focus. Take a short break from the norm so you return to your daily life feeling refreshed, revitalized, and ready to tackle new challenges! IB

The key is to take a step back, unplug, and permit yourself to take a breather.

If class merged with simplicity and comfort speaks to you, that’s the vibe this winter. Think timeless silhouettes and fabrics that will last in your wardrobe and let you move freely, while allowing you to stick to your style, shaping it the way you want.

You can never go wrong with a maxi outfit, especially in winter. It keeps you looking sophisticated while drawing all the warmth you need in this winter season. Try to add some white or colour to your outfit to give it that fun and bright touch.

Zipped Pocket Cardigan - R 699

Viscose Blend Knit Culottes - R 649

Available at www.woolworths.co.za

Every man should have a close-fitting rollneck this winter. It’s a modern essential, and when paired with the right pants or suit, it gives that clean touch. From the office to the dinner date, it sets a man up. The rollneck was graced on the runways of Paris Fashion Week 2024, so be assured, it’s still in fashion. You are allowed to tuck it under a shirt without it showing.

5 TIPS FOR WEARABLE FASHION THIS SEASON

1. Wear summer dresses in winter

You don’t need to buy a new wardrobe this season, be thrifty and sustainable by maximising wear from your current wardrobe. My top tip is to layer warm, voluminous knits over maxi summer dresses. You can even opt to tuck a turtleneck underneath a spaghetti strap summer dress for a reverse layering style tip.

2. Leopard print is here to stay

Invest in one leopard piece and you will keep wearing it, year after year. My advice is to style your outfit around one statement item - a pair of wide-leg denims, a midi skirt or a mesh slip dress, for example. Pair with black leathers, a pop of pink, crips whites or a clashing print.

3. Add a pop of red

If there’s one key colour trend this season it’s fire engine red - add it as a pair of tights, ballet pumps or even a bow hairlip accessory.

4. Gilets are the answer to transseasonal warmth

In particular the quilted gilet, your new sleeveless answer to the puffer coat. Dress it down with jeans, a striped bateau-neckline top and white sneakers, or dress it up and layer over a long-sleeved bohemian dress with leather cowboy boots.

5. Peter Pan collars are back

From check print dresses with frill collars to button-down shirts with muted bell sleeves, this collar style is appearing

across a variety of items this season. Wear underneath a cropped, knit cardigan or alone but bottomed up and tucked into high-waist pants or skirts. The options are endless and make for enduring style. IB

AVOID THESE gym injuries

BUILDING MUSCLE, LOSING WEIGHT OR MAINTAINING A WELLTONED BODY REQUIRES DISCIPLINE AND PUSHING YOURSELF. BUT IT ALSO COMES WITH GREAT RISK – LIKE INJURIES. YOU CAN ENJOY AN INCIDENT-FREE WORKOUT WITH THESE EASY TIPS.

Lower back pain

This is a dangerous injury that could give you serious problems unless you take steps to avoid it. Lower back pain often occurs as a result of overwhelming pressure on the spine after squats, deadlifts, and bent-over rows. Don’t pick up weights that you can’t handle. Always keep your core upright when doing your exercises.

Knee injuries

This type of injury is usually associated with squats and lunges. Try not to put too much pressure on the knees when exercising. Try and keep your body in good form. If you have a problem, I suggest wearing a knee brace.

Skin cracks

These can develop on your hands when doing exercises like pull-ups, deadlifts, and rows. Try to wear gloves or wear lifting- straps to minimise friction, and moisturise your hands well after each gym session.

Ankle sprain

This is one of the most common injuries to pick up at the gym. Ankle sprains are often caused by landing too hard on your feet after an exercise, but they can easily be prevented by wearing shoes that support your ankles.

Conclusion

Muscle strains

Overstretching or strains of the hamstrings from running or of the triceps from pull-ups can easily arise unless you warm up properly first. Always start with a light jog to get the muscles ready for your workout. Also, when doing weights, ease into it by increasing the intensity gradually, to give your muscles time to warm up and adjust.

I can’t guarantee that you are not going pick up injuries at the gym but if you follow my advice, you can prevent it. Don’t rush into your workout. Take it slowly and remember your upright composure. Oh, and keep warm! IB

PNIEL WHERE AN 1844 ALCOHOL RULE STILL APPLIES

WITH A 180-YEAR-OLD HISTORY, PNIEL IS CHARMING. IT IS MODERN IN MANY WAYS, BUT THE COMMUNITY STANDS FIRM IN ITS TRADITIONS - NO ALCOHOL IS SOLD IN TOWN. ANNETTE HAVENGA VISITED THE TOWN AND FOUND A COMMUNITY SET IN ITS HERITAGE AND HISTORY.

Pniel (pronounced Pin-yel, which means ‘face of God’) is in the Groot Drakenstein area of the Western Cape, between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. The town still stands firm in its traditions and sense of community. A rule made in 1844 that no alcohol was to be sold in the town is still being adhered to. This comes from the time when enslaved people and farm workers were paid with alcohol, a practice commonly known as the “tot system”. Today, visitors and tourists must go to nearby wine estates to buy alcohol.

Arriving in Pniel, the locals will wave as you drive past, showing their friendliness and gratitude for your visit to the town. They are justifiably proud of their master bakers and chefs, who not only bake and cook to earn a living but also to relax. Pniel bakers are renowned for making the best milk tart in the Overberg area.

At four-star Lumley’s Place Guesthouse, co-owner Benita Syster says that Cathy’s “koeksisters” and bakes, like carrot cake, are treats you can expect on a Sunday. Lumley’s Place also offers fine dining and hosts events such as weddings and parties. You can choose between a hot or cold breakfast overlooking a lovely pool with picture-perfect views and friendly staff. Benita also displays local handicrafts and produce and encourages visitors to support the local artesans.

“When did you last send a postcard?” Benita asks me. A writer and poet herself, Benita will hand you a postcard with instructions to write a special message to someone who needs uplifting. She then places a stamp on your postcard and promises to post it as well.

Alenor Pietersen, who runs a home restaurant, puts the town’s unity into words when she says she helps the same people who help put bread on her table. Alenor has a passion for charity and has been running a soup kitchen for six years, feeding some 200 kids daily. She also creates food parcels

for older people. At Alenor’s home restaurant, you can enjoy a threecourse meal while being entertained by Alenor’s stories and cuisine. Remember to bring your own wine; only juice and coffee are

The history of Pniel goes back to a time when slaves were bought and sold, and when residents still walked in front of the coffin of a loved one on their way to the cemetery. Presentday traffic makes this challenging, so people now walk on the pavement. Only residents belonging to the church could be buried in the cemetery. Having children born out of wedlock was frowned upon and could easily result

Museum secretary Sandra November says the town’s traditions are slowly dying out but that they are doing their best to keep people interested in the town’s origins. The town was founded by Preacher Stegman, and Sandra will excitedly tell museum visitors about how he rang the church bell at 8:00 pm each evening, encouraging the town people to get indoors. The church bell still hangs as a reminder of this rule.

Highlights in the town’s calendar include the annual Chrysanthemum Flower Show, with 2024 marking the 43rd time the show has taken place.

Visitors opting for a wine tasting or lunch on one of the perfectly set wine farms in the area may choose Alluvia, which offers a view, a bistro-style restaurant, and an exquisite boutique winery. At Bartinney, another great choice, the tasting shed offers a unique wine and fynbos experience.

In a small town where your business is my business, where rich and poor are all on firstname terms, visitors and tourists taking the time to drop in can be assured that this little town will not disappoint. IB

Hollywood A MAGICAL PLACE WHERE CHILDHOOD MOVIES COME ALIVE

BEFORE I BECAME AN ACTRESS, I WANTED TO GO TO HOLLYWOOD. I WANTED TO EXPLORE THE CITY OF MAKE-BELIEVE, THE PLACE WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS. ON MY RECENT TRIP, I EXPERIENCED THIS, AND MORE, WRITES ACTRESS CHANTELLE GERTSE VICTOR.

Los Angeles is one of the most popular cities for tourists. According to reports, more than 15 million people visited the city last year. Sure, Florida has laid-back Miami life, New York is buzzing with its Time Square vibe, but Los Angeles has Hollywood.

On our way to the hotel, the city reminded me a lot of Cape Town – beautiful and relaxed with palm trees in the middle of the road.

My husband surprised me and booked a suite at the famous Beverly Wilshire Hotel – a mere

stone’s throw from the famous Rodeo Drive. It is the very hotel where Richard Gere met Julia Roberts in a scene from Pretty Woman.

Entering the hotel, it’s luxurious – marble floors and dramatic chandeliers greet you with floral displays on every corner. The Dalai Lama, Barack Obama, Michael Douglas and Farrah Fawcett are but a few of the celebrities who have stayed here. Oh, and did I mention Elton John and Al Pacino? I felt like Hollywood royalty.

The staff were very friendly, helpful and not over-the-top-dramatic which made the checkin process smooth. Our room was huge and breathtaking. It had one bedroom, two bathrooms and a lounge overlooking, well, you guessed it, Rodeo Drive.

We only had four days, so we had to make the most of it.

It was time to hit the streets. First up on my list was reality TV star Lisa Van der Pump’s SUR bar and restaurant for supper. The place had a great vibe. We went full-monty on the menu – meaning we ordered most things. Goat cheese balls and lobster mash potato with bacon and cheese, Rotisserie chicken (the baby one), wagyu steak, beef burger and chips.

They say the food is bland and without flavour. I disagree

We tasted everything. When we were done, we took a doggy bag and handed it to the first homeless person we saw.

The next morning, breakfast at the hotel was amazing. In typical American style, I had to indulge in the pancakes – a few of them. Not long after breakfast, it was time for shopping. We went into Gucci, Valentino and the Christian Dior shop. But it was Chanel that impressed the most. I felt as if I were walking into someone’s mansion. It is designed like a home.

Dinner time (yes, shopping took a whole day, much to the frustration of hubby). We went to The Boil Daddy – another box ticked off the bucket list. Like the previous night, we ordered most things seafood: lobster tails, crab sticks, prawns and crawfish.

The next day was an open bus guided tour – 7 hours around Beverly Hills. Here and there, we caught a glimpse of a celebrity home but it was the Santa Monica Pier that just brought back so many TV movie scenes. It even had a small amusement park with breathtaking views. The

driver then drove to a spot where we could see the famous Hollywood sign and left us for 30 minutes to take pictures. After this, it was the famous farmers market and of course, the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Another highlight was going to Universal Studios. This tour was memorable for me as we saw all the tricks of the trade. They made floods and storms while the actual weather outside was calm, sunny and warm. The queues were long

and there were many tourists but once inside, the studios transformed the experience into an adrenaline rush.

Going past the Hilton Hotel brought so many memories as this is where Whitney Houston, one of my idols, passed away.

The biggest misconception about Hollywood is that the food is bland and without flavour. I disagree. The food was amazing, and this is what I would miss.

I would recommend visiting Hollywood because it makes your childhood shows back home in South Africa, come to life. Just have comfortable shoes as you will do a lot of walking. LA is laid back. Everyone looks fit and snazzy. I would go back. I want my boys to experience it as well. So? What are you waiting for? Start booking your Hollywood trip! You won’t be sorry. IB

HOLLYWOOD IN NUMBERS:

R2 000 – starting price of tickets at Universal Studios per day.

R1.3 billion – how much actor Adam Sandler made last year.

Family Adventures in

YOUR KIDS ARE FINALLY OLD ENOUGH FOR THAT ADVENTUROUS HOLIDAY YOU’VE BEEN DREAMING OF. FAMILY HOLIDAYS MAKE MEMORIES FOR YEARS TO COME, SO YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE YOU PICK THE PERFECT SPOT. FROM ADVENTURE TO RELAXATION AND SAFARI TO BEACH, A MALAWI HOLIDAY MIGHT JUST BE JUST WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR!

Malawi is a friendly, safe, warm, and welcoming destination. It’s also relatively easy to get around, be that on a self-drive itinerary or with private guided transfers. If you’re looking to combine some safari time with a little beach relaxation, Malawi offers both. It also offers some great outdoor activities, such as hiking and trekking, as well as some of the friendliest people on the African continent.

With its vibrant culture and spectacular scenery, Malawi is best suited to families with older kids who want to avoid the more well-trodden tourist paths. This tiny nation is full of beautiful surprises that promise a fantastic experience and a unique holiday for the whole family. With so much to do in such a compact country, you’ll find plenty of activities to entertain you all.

1. A Big 5 Safari in Majete Wildlife Reserve

A safari is the ideal activity for the whole family. Make your way to Majete Wildlife Reserve, in the south of the country and submerge yourself in

its untamed, wonderful wilderness. Majete is an incredible success in wildlife protection and one of the only places in Malawi where the Big 5 can be seen year-round!

Head out in a 4WD vehicle and explore the park with a guide; this is the best way to see the wildlife. You can also self-drive in this park if you’ve come in your own vehicle. At certain times of the year, boating safaris are also available, so take some time to admire the impressive water birds and the resident hippos and crocodiles. With a bit of luck, you’ll also spot some of the big game coming to the water’s edge for a drink. Stay at Thawale Tented Lodge or Mkulamadzi Lodge.

2. Explore Liwonde National Park on foot or by air

Make your way to Liwonde National Park, one of the most beautiful in the country and with some of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. You’ll be able to spot many elephants here - the park hosts around 900! Liwonde is also home to lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, black rhinos, elephants,

Liwonde National Park

the opportunity to see Liwonde from above. For $200 per person, you can take to the skies for a tour of the park in an African Parks helicopter, primarily used for the day-to-day protection and management of the park. See the animals from above and also learn about the park, its history, and the conservation efforts of African Parks. Swooping down the mighty Shire River is a once-in-a-lifetime experience your kids will never forget.

Liwonde is also renowned for its boat safaris. If you or your teens want to stretch your legs and get the adrenaline pumping, a walking safari is a terrific way to experience the park.

Stay at Kuthengo Camp, Mvuu Lodge or Mvuu Camp.

3. Hike Mount Mulanje

buffalo, hippos and crocodiles, as well as a great selection of birdlife, with some great sightings like the Narina trogon, Böhm’s bee-eater, collared palm thrush and the African pitta.

Liwonde is managed by the fantastic conservation organisation African Parks, which offers visitors

After your adventures in the bush, it’s time to take things up a notch. Lace up your hiking boots and set off for Mount Mulanje, the highest point in Malawi. The highest peak, Sapitwa, sits at 9,800ft, making for a challenging but manageable few days on the mountain: stunning peaks, pools, waterfalls, and an unbelievable sunrise view over southern Malawi from the summit. If the idea of making it to the top is a bit daunting, there are numerous different routes throughout the Mulanje Massif which will take you to some of the smaller but equally beautiful peaks. It is a terrific activity to add to your family holiday, giving those fit,

young teenagers a challenge and a memorable experience.

Spend some time before or after your trek in the beautiful tea estates just an hour away at Huntingdon House.

4. Have fun on Lake Malawi

When you’ve done your fair share of safaris and trekking, it’s time to unwind in the clear blue waters or relax on the sandy beaches of the magnificent Lake Malawi. Not many countries can offer a Big Five safari experience in the morning and an afternoon on the beach. There are several lake lodges to choose from. There’s a wide range of activities on offer - snorkelling, sailing, kayaking, waterskiing, diving, and island excursions; there’s something to keep even the most difficult or demanding of teens happy and occupied.

Stay at Mumbo Island, Blue Zebra, or Kaya Mawa. All these places and activities are bound to be far removed from your teenagers’ usual day-to-day lives, and that’s what holidays are all about. A holiday in Malawi is a great time to reconnect as a family, laugh, make memories and have as much fun as possible while exposing your growing children to new cultures and experiences.

Enjoy an incredible and diverse holiday with your family - Malawi won’t disappoint! IB

Born: Vereeniging, Gauteng

Occupation: Teacher

Roelofarendsveen

QUAINT, QUIET BUT WATCH YOUR AFRIKAANS!

LIVING IN THE NETHERLANDS AS AN AFRIKAANS-SPEAKING PERSON CAN BE FUN. BUT BE CAREFUL IF YOU SLIP IN A FEW AFRIKAANS WORDS. THEY MIGHT MEAN SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT IN DUTCH.

How long have you been living in Roelofarendsveen and why did you move there?

My husband, Kyle, and our twins were in a car accident in SA when a drunk driver pushed them off a bridge. Our kids were fine but my husband was in ICU for a few weeks. When the docket of the drunk driver disappeared, the corruption and crime just got too much. Apart from that, we wanted a future for our kids where they are free to ride bicycles in the neighbourhood and grow up safe.

What is Roelofarendsveen like?

We are about 20 minutes from Amsterdam. We first stayed in a rental for about two years before we bought a house. It’s a quaint little village, very Dutch. Amazing. My kids can cycle to school and their afternoon activities. We have a park opposite our house and they play until the sun goes down.

What do you love about the culture?

Everyone knows everyone. My daughter got lost one day. A lady found her and one of the moms recognised her as the girl who has a South African mom. Within a short while, they brought my daughter home. People here look out for each other. It’s quiet here. I come from a farm in South Africa where it was quiet. I could never live in Amsterdam. It’s way too busy.

What challenges did you face?

Leaving family behind was hard. Learning a new language and a whole new culture was a challenge. I had to make sure the kids were settled in and that my husband was happy at work. I had to stay at home for the first few years. Learning to clean the house because there are no domestic workers here. Cooking and cleaning and starting to work and juggling everything. Also, had another baby. A Dutch baby.

Apart from the famous cat translation, Afrikaans can get you into trouble when speaking certain words, can’t it?

Oh yes. We have had so many embarrassing moments. Once Kyle went to the shop and asked for a till slip. But he referred to it as a “slippy”. The person looked at him with great shock. To our horror, we found out that in Dutch, “slippy” is underwear.

How is the food?

It sucks. The cheese is amazing. There is nowhere else in the world except Italy where the food is as good as South African cuisine.

What do you miss about South Africa?

My family. The sun. I miss South African wine. In some places, they say the wine comes from South Africa but then it tastes sour. I miss a Wimpy brekkie. No need to rush.

What do you do when you miss SA?

We put on our South African music. We put on Demi-Lee Moore and Theuns Jordaan and then we dance.

What about the people?

The people are friendly. We have made so many friends. Our neighbours are like family. They help me raise my children. The people tend to become morbid during winter because then we don’t have sun.

Advice for someone thinking about emigrating to The Netherlands?

Become part of your society. Form part of the environment. I moved here and I went to do charity work at an old age home. That is how I learnt the language and more about the culture. IB

CURRENT JOB: Voice-over director, radio presenter & voice-over artist

The last place I visited was Zanzibar.

I found the city to be welcoming and relaxing.

I found the people like family – warm and inviting.

The food was a wonderful variety of flavours. The cuisine that was offered is aimed at tourists

with very familiar dishes but with an island twist here and there.

What was challenging was the currency exchange for transport in Zanzibar. Hiring a motorbike was cheaper.

I would definitely recommend this place because the water is lovely, sunsets like you see in the pictures and memories will be made that will last forever.

My next destination is Mauritius. IB

Spring/Summer Eyewear Trends: A BRILLIANT BLEND OF DARING DESIGNS

AND VIBRANT COLOURS

Spring/Summer eyewear trends are set to dazzle with a mix of retro-inspired frames, futuristic elements, and eco-friendly materials, showcasing a commitment to style with delightful colours.

Adele Camarena of Spectacle World remarks, “From oversized vintage designs to sleek, minimalist silhouettes, this season celebrates individuality and innovation. Get ready to elevate your style with the latest essential eyewear that is both functional and bold. Pantone’s colour palette promises vibrant hues that uplift the mood, from Fiesta Red to striking blues.”

She notes a rising interest in green eyewear, citing its natural, tranquil allure. Pantone’s Bistro Green is a cool, deep green that complements those with cool and deep colouring.

Peach Fuzz, Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2024, is a soft, warm hue that complements warmer skin tones beautifully.

Other notable Pantone colours this season include Tarragon, a soft green for lighter colouring, and Spicy Mustard, a warm yellow for warm skin tones. Fiesta Red suits warm tones, while Sun Orange flatters warm skin tones but works as an accent for cool tones. Strong Blue suits cool skin tones, and Horizon Blue complements a wide range of skin tones, revitalizing summer wardrobes.

Camarena adds that the sky is the limit for eyewear this season.

• The latest ombré effect is perfect for clients with lighter colouring.

• The glamorous cat eye style is a favourite for those with dramatic and romantic tastes, offering an instant facelift.

• Bold statement frames feature largescale, thick vintage designs echoing the maximalism of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

• Minimalist frames, characterised by delicate details and fine metals, are ideal for clients with petite faces and features.

• Sporty chic frames are a major hit with Gen Z, blending performance and fashion.

• Early 2000s shallow oval and square frames, like the bayonetta, are making a comeback on platforms like TikTok.

• Squarer designs appeal to those with a classic style, offering clean lines and a structured look.

• Geometrics are trending in almost all eyewear collections, providing bold and subtle designs that add structure to face shapes.

• Frames with a strong top bar create a bold, architectural look, ideal for those with low, straight brows and a dramatic style.

• Pastel acetates, available in warm peaches and yellows for warm skin tones and cool smoky greys and blues for cool skin tones, offer a subtle yet contemporary option.

• Gradient retro-inspired tints provide a colourful, playful edge, transforming simple frames into statement pieces.

“This season’s fashion trends include Country Club Preppy, floral prints, logo-free luxury, chic couture, denim, sheer fabrics, bows, and the 80s kitten heel. We have the eyewear styles to match these diverse looks. Eyewear should be fun and versatile. As an eyewear stylist optometrist, we empower our clients to see well, look fabulous, and feel great,” concludes Camarena.

4 BIG FINANCE GAME CHANGERS

THE GLOBAL FINANCE SPACE IS AN EVER-EVOLVING LANDSCAPE OF TRENDS BORN OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES MARRIED TO INNOVATIVE IDEAS. FINANCE PERSONNEL HAVE BECOME THE STRATEGY DRIVERS OF ORGANISATIONS, SO KEEPING UP TO DATE WITH FINANCIAL TRENDS IS VITAL. HERE ARE FOUR OF THE BIGGEST GAME-CHANGERS.

AI is most effective when paired

with human expertise

Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) takes centre stage. Since entering the chats, it promises to improve accuracy, detect fraudulent activities, and solve complex issues. AI is effective in analysing market data, which is critical for investors. According to the Marsh McLennan agency, AI is most effective when paired with human expertise, and organisations are harnessing its power for data and predictive analysis, automation and research insights.

Green Finance

Fintech companies and investors are increasingly focused on sustainability and will continue to incorporate green finance into products and services to manage environmental risk and make good returns. International financial reporting standards now require the disclosure of sustainability and climate-related risks, which means businesses are adapting their operations to incorporate these.

Cashless revolution

Cashless transactions such as debit and credit cards, mobile payments and digital wallets are on the rise globally, with younger generations preferring cashless transactions for their speed and convenience. Entire organisations now opt to be cashless. The rise in digital payments is linked to the need for increased security to reduce fraud and tax evasion, and a better experience for both clients and service providers.

Cybersecurity

The rise in digital finance unfortunately brings more sophisticated cyber threats, necessitating the advancement of cybersecurity. As hackers find more ways of capturing sensitive data and wreaking havoc on business networks, research development seeks innovative solutions to comply with regulations and protect data, therefore keeping up with the ever-changing world of finance technology. Name: Gugu Sithole

Company: Glamping Adventures

Duration: 5 years

Staff: 18

A well-looked-after team

IS MORE PRODUCTIVE

GLAMPING ADVENTURES WAS FOUNDED JUST A FEW MONTHS BEFORE COVID-19. TOURISM WAS HIT HARD BUT THE COMPANY SURVIVED AND CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF VEUVE CLICQUOT WHO, IN 2022, SELECTED GUGU SITHOLE FOR ITS BOLD WOMAN AWARD.

How did you start this company?

I founded Glamping Adventures because of my passion for travel and my desire to create unique and unforgettable experiences for fellow travellers.

What is your background?

I worked for various corporates in South Africa as an Events Manager, where I dedicated my expertise to curating incentive travel experiences for different business channels, orchestrating gala dinners, organising engaging conferences, and facilitating team-building activities aimed at fostering corporate relationships.

Manager or leader. Which one are you?

I am more of a leader than a manager but, as CEO, I strive to be both. I’m a comfortable leader who can communicate our vision well, motivate, and drive the cause. My leadership style is inclusive and allows for guidance and mentorship. I encourage growth and development within my team while allowing room for error. I believe that a happy and well-looked-after team is productive, innovative, and easily adaptable to the everchanging needs of the business. As a manager, I can implement the vision, and ensure that processes and tasks are executed.

Do you sometimes micromanage your staff?

It’s bad for staff morale. It shows a lack of trust in team members and may hinder productivity and creativity. I would rather invest time in ensuring that the team understands the vision, understand why we do what we do, and why it’s critical for everyone to work as collective collaborators. When people feel valued, heard, and trusted they go above and beyond their scope of work.

What does Glamping Adventures do?

Glamping Adventures specialises in crafting and curating bespoke escapes and immersive experiences throughout South Africa and the surrounding regions. If you’re seeking the perfect blend of luxury, nature, and adventure, we are the ones who can make it happen. From tailor-made bush retreats deep in the heart of the wilderness to adventures in the Namib Desert, we’re here to turn your travel aspirations into unforgettable memories.

What is the biggest misconception about Glamping Adventures?

That we only cater to female travellers and that travel is only on set dates. We cater to varied clientele from groups, solos, and families, to FITs and corporate retreats.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

It varies, but mostly our challenges come from external factors such as visa issues for international clients. It’s frustrating when a client books an experience with us and a week before travel they have not received their visa when the application was made way in advance. It’s a costly inconvenience to both the client and us.

Does your laptop go with you when you go on holiday?

Yes, it does. As an entrepreneur, I need to take advantage of all opportunities presented to me. I may be asked to pitch for unexpected opportunities while being away and I do not want to make the lack of resources an excuse. I want to stay connected to my business.

What has been your biggest crisis as CEO and how did you navigate the company through this storm?

My crew had a motor vehicle accident while en route to a remote setup for a corporate client in the Eastern Cape. I was in Berlin for training when it happened. It was nerve-wracking and frustrating given that I was far away. I was the only one with insurance documents in the organisation, everyone depended on me for everything, and I felt overwhelmed by it all. We managed to get another vehicle as well as supplies that were lost in the accident. We had 3 staff members who were incapacitated, and we managed to get temporary labour at the destination where the event was being held. We pulled it off and retained the client.

What is your vision as CEO for the people working in your company?

My goal for my employees is to ensure that they understand why we do what we do and work collaboratively toward achieving the company’s vision. I want to create a space for my team to grow, adapt, and be resilient in the face of challenges. IB

Q A&

with Richard Manzini

CEO - DAYBREAK FOODS

How did you get this job?

After what felt like a rigorous process and an extensive interview process, I was fortunate to come out as the best candidate for the role.

Give us a brief background of your work experience.

For the majority of my career to date, I have been a private equity investor for the biggest asset manager on the continent. Having spent my time in acquisitions, growth and eventual business exits. I have served on numerous boards, have acquired a good understanding of the complexities of stakeholder management and the nuances of getting the right human capital around you.

What are the two qualities you look for when a person applies for a job?

I try immediately to assess whether the person is inherently a good person; in saying that, I mean I’m looking for someone with a learning attitude and the ability to solve complex issues.

If an employee is not meeting targets, how would you handle the situation?

We fortunately work as a team, and provide support for one another. With these indicators, the team can pick up a problem much earlier. We immediately seek out the root cause, provide corrective measures or sometimes, simply provide the person with the space to come out of perhaps a personal situation. No employee can be at 100% on a daily basis. So we try to help whoever needs it.

Time in this position: 11 months

Company: Daybreak Foods

Total staff in company: 3500+

Does your laptop go with you on holiday and why?

It does come along, however, I’m fortunate that I hardly ever have to take it out. I have a very strong and capable team around me.

How do you handle crisis situations?

There is a crisis every day. The principle remains the very same daily. The crux centres around sustainable business practices, which lends itself to having to make very fast and informed decisions. We are data-driven, we understand truly what we farm and what we do. And that is truly the key: making decisions more quickly.

What has been your biggest achievement at the company?

Turning the business cash-positive amid Avian Influenza, load shedding, and increases in our feed costs. We were able to gain market share, albeit small. I spent the larger part of my time talking to the customers, rebuilding that trust and improving on service levels. We have been able to win a few more top-tier customers back into our fold. And we are fully committed to delivering 100% service levels.

What is your vision for the company?

To be a mainstay in our consumers’ minds as a leading ethical foods business, with impeccable business practices. A top employer in the sector, with a comprehensive employee value proposition across the various levels.

PORK BUNNY CHOW (KOTA)

Delve into the essence of South African street food with this easy-to-make Pork Bunny Chow. Diced pork simmers in a fragrant curry sauce, nestled in a hollowed-out loaf of white bread, and served with a side of crispy fries. It’s a casual, yet hearty dish that promises to bring the vibrant flavours of summer to your table.

Prep: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Serves: 4

INGREDIENTS

• 500g pork, diced

• ½ cup cooking oil

• 1 onion, diced

• 2 tablespoons curry powder

• 1 teaspoon minced ginger

• 2 teaspoons minced garlic

• 2 medium tomatoes, diced

• 1½ cups diced potatoes

• ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

• 1½ cups chicken broth or water

• salt and pepper to taste

• 1 unsliced white bread loaf

• fries, for serving

METHOD

1. Heat oil in a skillet; cook onions, garlic, ginger, cinnamon, and spices until soft.

2. Add tomatoes and pork; sauté briefly, then pour in broth.

3. Add potatoes; simmer until pork is tender and potatoes are cooked.

4. Season, thicken with flour if desired, scoop into hollowed bread, and serve with fries.

CRUSTLESS DANISH FETA & BACON QUICHE

INGREDIENTS

• 250g diced bacon

• 250g portabellini mushrooms, sliced

• 4 large eggs

• 250ml milk

• 4 rounds of Danish feta

• 1 cup of grated mozzarella

• extra virgin olive oil

• fresh thyme for serving

• salt and pepper to taste

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

2. In a pan, add the olive oil followed by the diced bacon and portabellini mushrooms. Salt and

pepper to taste. Fry until golden and beautifully fragrant (until your bacon and mushrooms are cooked). Meanwhile, in a bowl mix the eggs and milk, forming a sauce consistency and season to taste.

3. Line up a 24cm quiche dish of your choice (I used a Le Creuset one, and the capacity must be 1.35l for your egg and milk mixture). Start by layering the mushrooms and bacon followed by three rounds of Danish feta and finally add your milk & egg mixture. Crumble the remainder of the Danish feta over and finally the mozzarella.

4. Bake for approximately 25 - 35 minutes or until golden brown.

5. Serve with some fresh thyme, cooked vegetables or a green salad of your choice.

DARK CHOCOLATE & BANANA BRAAIBROODJIES WITH MAPLE SYRUP WHIPPED CREAM

DARK CHOCOLATE & BANANA BRAAIBROODJIES WITH MAPLE SYRUP WHIPPED CREAM

These braaibroodjies have been known to convert non-banana-eating folk into bananadevouring savages.

Feeds: 4–6

Prep: 20 minutes

Cook: 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS

For the broodjies

• 10 slices oat and honey bread

• 1 cup melted butter

• 4–6 bananas (depending on size), sliced into rounds

• 1 slab Lindt 70% dark chocolate, grated

• 1 slab Lindt 70% dark chocolate, chopped

For the maple syrup whipped cream

• 1 cup whipping cream, cold

• ½ teaspoon vanilla essence

• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• ¼ cup maple syrup

METHOD

1. To make the broodjies, spread out the bread slices, making sure each one has a partner, and brush with melted butter. Add the banana rounds in a layer and evenly sprinkle over the grated chocolate, followed by the chopped chocolate. Pop the tops on the sarmies, then brush both sides with butter and wrap them individually in foil.

2. To make the cream, whip the cream in a large bowl until peaks begin to form. Fold in the vanilla, cinnamon and maple syrup and whisk until stiff peaks form.

3. Put the foil-wrapped broodjies on the grid over medium-heat coals for about 5 minutes per side. This will melt all the goodness together inside the broodjies. Then take the broodjies out of the foil, arrange them in a flip grid and braai until golden brown. Serve with whipped cream and try not to eat them all before you share them with your mates.

Fierce, Fun + Fab

more interesting appeared? Tall, dark, and handsome, the classic trifecta. He flashed me a smile as he took the seat next to mine, and before I knew it, last night’s wish was unfolding before my eyes.

But let’s rewind to the previous evening when I had a heartto-heart over dinner with an elderly gentleman. He amused me with a story about his wife, who once made a wish on New Year’s Eve. She shouted at the moon, declaring her readiness to meet someone that year. She wanted him to be outdoorsy, into photography, and fun. As fate would have it, a couple of months later, an adventurous photographer entered her life, and they lived happily ever after. The elderly gentleman insisted it was simple: ask, and you shall receive.

and you shall Ask receive

AT THE AIRPORT, I NOTICE THIS GORGEOUS-LOOKING GUY AMONG THE CROWD, AND AS I BOARD, FATE INTERVENES, AND SEATS HIM NEXT TO ME.

Dear Self

Remember when I was on a flight, minding my own business, scrolling through social media when suddenly, the guy who was about to make this plane ride a lot

Beyond inspired, I make my own wish under the full moon: a request for an emotionally available, ambitious man with kind, smiling eyes. And I would LOVE him to be called Christopher, my favourite name!

The next day, at the airport, I notice this gorgeous-looking guy among the crowd, and as I board, fate intervenes, and seats him next to me. As he takes his seat, I can’t resist saying, “Hi, Christopher.” I don’t know who is more surprised, him or me, as these words come out of my mouth without permission from my brain!

He says, “Yes, I’m Christopher. How do you know my name?” Of course, he questions how I know his name, and of course, I tell a little white lie. In my panicked state, I resort to

playful scepticism, demanding proof that he is indeed Christopher. “Look and see,” he says, showing me his boarding pass: Christopher. It dawns on me that maybe, just maybe, the universe has a sense of humour!

I hand him my business card with shaky hands amid my disbelief. Despite my initial nerves, Christopher and I strike up a brief conversation. Christopher then falls asleep, and, on landing, we part ways.

However, fate works in mysterious ways. The following night, a message arrives: “Hey Milou, it’s Chris, the random dude on the plane. We should grab a drink sometime soon.”

And so, as I eagerly anticipate what the future holds, I’m reminded of the wisdom of that elderly gentleman: be careful what you wish for because you just might find it sitting beside you in row 14 of an aeroplane.

Takeaway tip: keep your eyes open for unexpected connections. Sometimes, attraction is just a seat away. Make eye contact, say hello, and crack a smile—you never know where it might lead!

BOOK REVIEW

WHO REALLY KILLED CHRIS HANI?

Is it worth reading?

Yes! It’s written like an exhilarating whodunnit. The book investigates which agencies acted in concert to achieve his death. The finger of suspicion is pointed at Apartheid Military Intelligence, the corporate sector and his rivals in the ANC.

Does Chris (Nicholson) fear for his life?

Yes. He does but he finds comfort in knowing that Chris Hani, Anton Lubowski and others, were so much braver, laying down their lives so that their fellow citizens might have a better life. As the book is now published it is too late to harm the messenger of truth, and it would be obvious who the perpetrators were.

What is the reaction of bookworms after reading this book?

They call it a thrilling page-turner of a detective story, with amazing details of our tragically scarred land. It also shows how South Africa, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo have been plundered by the colonial powers over centuries, and how activist leaders who sought to remedy this tragic situation have been eliminated.
