ON A RECENT TRIP, I STOPPED AT A BILTONG SHOP ALONG THE R33 NEAR VAALWATER, LIMPOPO, TO GET DRY WORS AND I NOTICED THE OWNER’S HANDS WERE BRUISED. HER STORY BLEW ME AWAY.

Road trips are one of my favourite things to do. You get to meet people and hear their stories. I walked into her shop located on a farm, picked my dry wors and approached the counter to pay. I saw cuts on the owner’s hands. Cautiously, I asked her what happened.

Last month a group of guys entered her shop, physically attacked her, tied her up and took her cash. Then two weeks later, as she lay in her bed on the farm, another attacker woke her up. Not human. A snake wrapped itself around her body. She grabbed it by the neck with one hand and with the other, managed to pull the rest of the body off her.

And here she is, still standing and telling me the tale. What I admired was the fact that she was

attacked, was knocked down but got back up again. Sometimes life throws us challenges that catch us off guard. Like our cover story, singer Loyiso Bala who lost 60% of his income and had to move to a smaller place. Today, he is the proud dad to three girls and living his best life.

We also asked a few celebrity dads which superhero their kids think they are. The answers were quite funny. On the travel side, we went to Malawi to find the best hiking trails for you and Val d’Isère in France, which must take the cake as the most picturesque town we’ve seen, and with so much to offer.

Enjoy.

SCHOOLS – A MISSED OPPORTUNITY

The tragedy of under-estimating majority learner potential in South Africa

hy is inequality of access to sound and engaging teaching and learning so deeply embedded in our schools? Recently, several politicians have claimed that they are aware of this very grave danger to our fledgling democracy. Between 300 000 and 400 000 learners drop out of school at Grade 9 or before and then have no access to any further study opportunities. The question remains: what exactly are 6-8 million unemployed young people doing?

During December and January, there is an explosion of articles discussing the declining Matric results in Mathematics and Science. Business and industry are crying out for more engineers, doctors, architects, artisans and accountants. Fingers are pointed at every level of bureaucracy and society, often negating one other. These tiresome and broken-record debates do not offer any solutions. The classroom, the school, the supposed hub of learning and teaching in those years prior to Matric examinations, deserve to come under detailed scrutiny. Why do we continue to accept that our young impressionable children receive such a distorted version of a learning space, which is often a cauldron of misery, mistrust, boredom, confusion and conflict?

Is there really any sensible reason or argument in favour of teacher absenteeism, tardiness and poor preparation? In practice, teacher training needs to be enforced as a corrective and restorative strategy. There should be a strong, enforced legal movement to reform classroom practice in many of our disadvantaged schools.

Why do teachers object to measures of accountability and responsibility? I am convinced that a much higher number of learners could succeed in obtaining top levels in Mathematics and Science, if established blockage to classroom practice are removed. Maths Centre can demonstrate that, given an extra focus, every single learning gap brought to Grade 12 by the learners can be corrected, and learners can subsequently achieve levels 7, 6 and 5 in their final examinations. A very serious consequence of this conflict of performance in grades is that learners do not apply for bursaries in Grade 11, as their Grade 11 test marks do not give them any confidence to succeed. As they did not apply for bursaries in time, what can learners do in the year that follows? Many are without bursaries and no jobs. The odds are stacked against them, as many more learners will be competing for bursaries the following year.

We cannot remain a nation so distracted that we do not see the status quo in education as a crisis. Can we not see that our collective future and our collective present are at stake? Under such clouds of despair, how does education play its true role, a system that transforms the young into citizens of the near future? This will only take place if teachers can create a home in a classroom in which learners learn, grow and develop, buffered against the criminal inequalities in their daily lives, in the pursuit of an anti-poverty state of being. Let every teacher champion their classroom, every parent their children, every grandparent their grandchildren with love, strong discipline and care, no matter what it takes. These three players hold the key to create a revolution that will address the plight of our young people of tomorrow.

QUESTION…

Can you buy luxury, no matter the cost?

Sean is General Manager of Granny Mouse Country House, a small boutique hotel in the Midlands in KZN.

Bonnie Smith

Bonnie is the FCTG Corporate General Manager with a dynamic 16-year career spanning travel consulting, leadership, and technology. Her expertise, vision, and innovative focus complement FCM’s strong growth and industry leadership.

The biggest myth that the luxury fashion industry is holding on to is the notion that you can buy luxury at a cost. Luxury is not about high prices. Luxury is about the experience and the exclusivity. You may have all the money in the world, but you still can’t get your hand on that Birkin or Kelly because Hermés has understood that luxury is about making the experience unique. Luxury is about experiences and if you can’t provide unique experiences relating to the brand, then it doesn’t matter how expensive you are.

STRANDED IN SINGAPORE

I booked a cruise on QM2 for myself and my son from Singapore to my home port of Cape Town. The fare included the flight to Singapore, transfers and one night in a five-star hotel. Upon arrival at the port, I was refused embarkation because Cunard Cruises said my passport was not valid. I pointed out that it was issued by the British consulate in Cape Town specifically for the journey and detailed every stop on the cruise, but they refused to budge. My son recently suffered a massive heart attack and was already taking strain from the 20-hour journey to Singapore, so I insisted that he, albeit reluctantly, board without me. He needed to get home and couldn’t handle another 20-hour flight to get back. I’m almost 80 and was left stranded miles from home by Cunard with not even an offer of coffee, never mind a taxi, hotel, or flight. They weren’t prepared to discuss the

matter.

DODGY AIRPORT GUY

A while back, I travelled to Luanda. At the airport, the customs guy looked at my passport and instructed me to go to an office. They spoke Portuguese and I speak Afrikaans and English. Inside the office, the person said I don’t have a yellow fever injection. I said, “But I am a travel agent myself and nowhere does it state that I need a yellow fever jab.” He then asked me for $35. I only had R10 on me. I offered it to him but he rejected it. They said I could have the injection there in the office. An officer arrived with a dirty needle. Yes, a used needle! I thought, no way! I asked for a clean needle. The officer said I needed to pay for a clean needle, otherwise they would inject me with a dirty needle. I thought the only way out here is if I cry. So, I started to cry loudly. They got so nervous that they told me to go.

OUR SHIP KISSED A VESSEL

In April, I embarked aboard a luxury cruise ship in Durban for a leisurely three-night voyage, direct to Cape Town. On arrival in Cape Town, things went belly-up. A strong southeaster was blowing but the captain still proceeded into port. Our ship decided to take a different direction and, losing power, careered into the bow of a German freighter berthed

nearby. I dashed up to join fellow passengers observing our ship’s “kiss” with the cargo vessel from the top sun deck. Damage to both ships, happily, proved minimal. An hour later I was enjoying breakfast in the restaurant, hearing passengers’ comments – they seemed more concerned about the fact that the “tablecloth” was over the famed Table Mountain (think mist and rain for overseas readers), which could ruin their chances of going up in the cable car that day. Our eventful arrival was quite a unique experience!

David Hughes, Durban

ROBBED AT KNIFEPOINT IN AMSTERDAM

People say South Africa has a high crime rate, but I have been living in Europe for years and I have been more of a victim in Brussels, Paris and Amsterdam than I have in SA. One early morning, after a party, I walked to my (then) boyfriend’s house. As I was walking along the street, I suddenly had the bright idea of taking a small alley to get to my destination more quickly. The lane was a bit dark but I kept walking when suddenly, a man appeared with a knife in his hand. He held it against my stomach and demanded 50 euros. Fortunately, I had just that on me and gave it to him. He ran away. Another pedestrian walking by, saw how distraught I was and he was kind enough to comfort me.

ALL ABOUT A BOY
14 INBOUNDSA / June 2024

HE HAS TRAVELLED THE WORLD WITH HIS SMOOTH VOICE. HE ONCE LED TBN AS A CHANNEL DIRECTOR AND NOW LEADS ONE OF SA’S BIGGEST RADIO STATIONS, UMHLOBO WENENE AS A STATION MANAGER. HE IS ALSO A “GIRL DAD” TO KENZIE (11) TORI (6) AND JODY (2). BUT FANS AND FRIENDS SEEM OBSESSED WITH ASKING LOYISA BALA WHEN HE IS GETTING A BOY.

“When are you making plans to get a boy?

There are just girls in your family,” seems to be a question that Loyiso (44) has had to come to terms with, especially after the birth of his third daughter, Jody. But, in an interview with InBound SA, singer Loyiso Bala says he has no plans to expand the family to accommodate a boy.

“I am not going to make babies just to get a boy. But other people seem to be obsessed about it. I am fine. I was pretty much surrounded by boys all my life. Having the girls and my wife is refreshing,” he says.

Loyiso, who lives in Gqeberha with wife Jennifer and their three daughters, was in Johannesburg to shoot a new gospel video in collaboration with singer Jessica Dalla Torre.

He was still young when riots broke out in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape town where he was born. “My mom decided to send my siblings and me (brothers Zwai and Phelo and sister Pinky) to live with my cousin Lwando (Bantom, himself 19 at the time) when our school closed.

“Lwando worked at a petrol station to care for us kids and his mother. He organised some funds to send Zwai and myself to the Drakensberg Boys Choir and Phelo joined later.”

With no time to get a tertiary education, Loyiso went straight into a recording studio and so cemented his footprint in the South African music industry.

“A highlight for me was performing at Nelson

Mandela’s 90th birthday in London. Madiba even wrote a letter confirming my attendance and endorsing me. Where is that letter by the way?” he says to himself.

He recalls 2008 as his most successful year. “I had three songs in the top 100. Hearing my song on the radio felt normal to me. I was winning Men’s Health as best man. I was GQ Magazine’s best dressed and You Magazine called me the sexiest man. I was on a roll.”

Something, however, was missing. Purpose.

“I was busy recording in the USA. We were putting together some songs that some guy from a management company was going to shop around with. The guy said he could throw anything at me and I could sing it, even if it wasn’t my language or my style, it was R&B. Then he said something profound. He said I am lacking one thing. You are lacking. You. Give me you.

“For a moment there, I had forgotten who I was. I had to find my identity. Your identity is connected to your purpose. I was living from accolade to accolade. From praise to praise.”

And so, he decided to give Christianity a chance. “I thought, let me try out this Jesus thing and see if it works for me.

“I sat in Bible school with 18-year-olds, the oldest in class, famous as I was. I took a whole year off. I sat there, I felt like doing something purposeful, the feeling I had when I first started.”

It was after Bible school that he joined The Jesus Collective - an evangelical music organisation that aims to uplift communities through gospel music,

June 2024 / INBOUNDSA 15 COVER FEATURE

and mentor up-and-coming musicians from previously disadvantaged areas.

Years went by, he met Jennifer, got married and had three beautiful girls. Then, one day, a phone from a friend saying TBN was looking for a manager. “I applied and got the job. My biggest challenge was getting revenue for a Christian TV station, and we achieved that. After 5 years, the revenue was up to R500 000 a month.”

It was during this time that he completed an MBA from Henley Business School, finishing several courses in finance and music production.

But as the world suffered under the strict rules of Covid-19, so did the Bala family. “We had to downscale and move to a smaller house. Our income was suddenly down by 60%. It was a tough time. But we were blessed with good friends who helped us.”

Then, another call from a friend: “Umhlobo Wenene is looking for a station manager.”

Loyiso pondered first. “I mean, I haven’t spoken full sentences of isiXhosa in years. How was I going to manage a whole Xhosa station? I eventually decided to take the chance.” And so, the young Bala family packed their bags and moved to Gqeberha to start a new chapter in their lives. “Things are going so well. We are having the time of our lives,” he says.

The job he says he is most proud of is being a dad to three girls. “People still ask me where my boys are. I went to Drakensberg Boys Choir where it was just boys. I went to St. Sithians College. Just boys. I joined the TKZ family of 7 guys. Bala Brothers? Just boys. The girls are a breath of fresh air. Some people ask me if I want a boy, and the answer is no. I am perfectly fine and content.

Loyiso says he is a cheerleader type of dad. “I am a confidant. I am a constant source of encouragement for them. I realise they all have different personalities and will one day take different paths. My role is to encourage them with the values I grew up with as a child.”

As soon as he gets into the house, its play time, he says. Asked which superhero he thinks they consider him to be, the answer is: “Superman! Daddy is constantly in the air, flying somewhere.” IB

What makes you angry? When people talk down to others. What makes you happy? My family. Favourite food? Oxtail. Ultimate movie? The Legend of 1900. Soft spot? Anyone’s kindness.

Ayanda and Lungile in Germany

You know them for their calm yet vibrant personalities, and we love the deep bond between model, actress and presenter Ayanda Thabethe and celeb make-up artist and beauty content creator Lungile Thabethe. They have been in Germany, showing us how to live it up when in Europe. You can see through their feed, that just as much as it was work, it was also a relaxed vacationing moment for them, enjoying the cuisine, the restaurants’ aesthetics, and the fashion. We love it for them!

Baby joy for Khanya

Actress and model Khanya Mkangisa has just had a baby and she was probably one of the hottest pregnant women we have ever seen on the “Gram” feed of South Africa. She made her first pregnancy period seem so easy and handled it with utmost high fashion and beauty. Can we enter her into a sexy mama contest already?

50 CENT Netflix-ing

If you love boldness, strength, confidence, and courage, one artist who surely encompasses it all is rapper, producer, and entrepreneur 50 CENT. Born Curtis Jackson, the rapper has just struck a deal with Netflix for his upcoming documentary. The documentary focuses on allegations against Diddy of sexual assault. Somebody had to raise awareness and protect- and 50 Cent did that.

10 MINUTES WITH ROXETTE’S

Per Gessle

FOLLOWING TWO BIG LOSSES IN THE GROUP, MARIE FREDRIKSSON IN 2019 AT AGE 61 AND THEIR DRUMMER PER ALSING AT 60 THE FOLLOWING YEAR, PER GESSLE IS KEEPING THE NAME OF ROXETTE ALIVE BY GOING ON A WORLD TOUR WITH LENA PHILIPSSON AS THE LEAD SINGER. GAVIN PRINS INTERVIEWED PER AHEAD OF THEIR SA TOUR.

Following the sad passing of Marie Fredriksson, why is it so important for you to keep the band’s legacy alive?

When she passed away in 2019, I didn’t know what to do. I just sat around and went touring in Sweden. Eventually, I realised I wanted to pay homage to the Roxette catalogue. I wrote all the songs, so I realised I wanted to build on it some more.

How did you find Lena to be part of the band?

I had worked with Lena Philipson before and then, one day, I realised there was something there. So, I called her up and said I needed a meeting. When I asked her if she wanted to play the Roxette songs with me, she nearly fell off her chair. It was in the studio when I heard Lena sing that it was clear that we sound great together. And I thought -this could work. Once she started singing Roxette’s songs, Lena just sounded so amazing.

You have been to SA. What do you remember about the country?

I remember great and supportive crowds and knowing all our songs (laughs). I have friends in Cape Town. So I have been there a couple of times. I love the food and the wine. The last time

we performed as a band was with Marie, in Cape Town. I have been on safaris with my family, checking out the Big 5 and coming close to scary animals. Rust en Vrede is a very nice wine.

What can we expect from the SA tour?

It’s not about me. It’s about playing the old familiar Roxette songs and singing our classics. It is going to be a nice concert, a trip down memory lane for people who love Roxette songs.

It Must’ve Been Love was your biggest hit. What was the inspiration when you wrote it?

It’s a funny story. Our label in Germany asked me to write a Christmas song and I came up with the song but with different lyrics. It did not do well. So Marie and I changed it a little and It Must’ve Been Love became a hit. IB

Jessica Dalla Torre:

I NEVER WANTED TO SING

SHE WAS JUST LIKE ANY TEENAGER TRYING TO FIGURE OUT LIFE. SINGING WAS OUT OF THE QUESTION FOR GOSPEL ARTIST JESSICA DALLA TORRE BECAUSE SHE WAS SHY. BUT HER NANNY, GLADNESS, HAD OTHER PLANS.

Born in Johannesburg to Portuguese parents, Jessica Dalla Torre (38), loved dancing and playing the piano. Then one day, her nanny, Gladness, heard the teen sing in her room and immediately alerted her parents. And so, a singer was born.

On the set of her new music video for her latest song “Keep My Eye On You”, a collaboration with Loyiso Bala, the bubbly Jessica sat down with InBound SA to share the news of her new song and her excitement in sharing it with her fans.

“I was raised in a Christian home where we listened to a lot of worship music. I’ve loved worship from a very young age. I’ve been attending and singing in church for many years,” says the mother of two girls.

After school, she entered Idols and despite not reaching the finals, still pursued her singing career. Soon after, she recorded an album “Into

Your Heart” with Daniel Ornellas in Nashville, Tennessee. “My love for worship drew me to record this new album. My hope is that the album will be meaningful, life-changing and will inspire a closer relationship with Jesus. It was a wonderful experience to work on this album with Daniel, who has become a good friend.”

When she returned home, she joined a Christian group, The Jesus Collective, where they go to communities to give youth and adults hope. It is here that she ran into an old friend, singer Loyiso Bala. She persuaded him to collaborate on the song which impressed critics so much, the two made a music video.

“At the beginning, I was very shy singing in front of people and now I use it to see how lives are changing for ordinary South Africans. Through the group, we change lives through music,” she says.

As for her future, Jessica says: “I will go where life wants me to go.”

Michael Jackson dies

In 2009, 50-year-old “King of Pop,” Michael Jackson, died in his Beverly Hills home. While Jackson’s personal life was mired in controversy and mystery, the artist’s enduring influence was undeniable. After rising to fame as a child, performing alongside his brothers in The Jackson 5, Jackson broke out as a solo star with 1979’s Off the Wall. It was 1982’s Thriller, however, that changed the course of his career – and pop culture history. Holding the record as the highest-selling album of all time, Thriller was the first LP to feature seven Top Ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including “Beat It” and “Billie Jean,” while its music videos broke racial barriers on MTV. Over the next decade, Jackson would continue to smash records, rising to become the world’s most successful entertainer through albums like Bad and Dangerous.

Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy in copyright trial

In June 2016, Led Zeppelin’s guitarist Jimmy Page denied stealing the riff to ‘Stairway To Heaven’ when he took the stand at a copyright trial in the US. The band were accused of lifting the opening guitar line from ‘Taurus’, a 1968 track by the band Spirit. Page testified that he had never heard the song until people started posting comparisons online a few years ago. Page admitted to owning several Spirit albums, but only remembered buying two of them, neither of which contained Taurus.

Purple Rain is released

In June 1984, Prince released his iconic sixth studio album, Purple Rain. The album, which featured his band the Revolution, also served as the soundtrack to his film of the same name. One of the world’s best-selling albums of all time, Purple Rain remained at the top of the Billboard 200 for an astonishing 24 consecutive weeks, while it produced two No.1 hits, “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy,” as well as the Top Ten singles “I Would Die 4 U” and the title track. The album went on to win two Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.

IF DADDY WAS A SUPERHERO…

CARDS, GIFTS, SMILES, LUNCHEONS & DINNERS. WE COUNT THEM AS THE CELEBRATORY NORM DURING FATHER’S DAY. INBOUND SA’ S TEMO MPODI DECIDED TO FLIP IT UP AND WONDERED WHICH SUPERHERO KIDS THINK THEIR DADS ARE.

When it comes to what kind of superhero dad he is, radio host S’bu Mkwanazi’s twin boys, Sihle and Mpumi (both 16), are divided. Sihle says his dad would be Batman. “He is Batman because he has a man cave with two sidekicks: me and my brother! At the same time, he is a loving dad who validates all that we do. He treats my mom with respect and love, showing me how I must treat my girlfriend!” Mphumi is convinced his dad is Mr Fantastic. “My dad balances work and family so welI, I sometimes wonder if he’s ever even working. He works from home so it makes me wonder even more, and he’s also very chilled but can be super strict!”

Father of three, TV presenter Janez Vermeiren is Superman to his 9-year-old Vincent because “he is a super dad. He takes me to all my wrestling and jiujitsu lessons.” Here Janez is with wife Juliana, and Vincent and Noah (8).

Singer Chad Saaiman who recently got married, says his daughter Summer (14) would think he is Batman. “I am always observing and always protecting.”

Little Halo calls his famous radio host Roger Goode dad Aquaman. “He is Aquaman because bath time is always fun times.”

YOUR DAD WILL ACTUALLY USE

LET’S BE HONEST: SHOPPING FOR DAD IS CHALLENGING BECAUSE HE DOESN’T DROP HINTS ABOUT WHAT HE MIGHT WANT AS A GIFT. SO, WE MUST DO SOME DIGGING. WHAT WE KNOW FOR SURE IS THE NICE-TO-HAVE ORNAMENT-PICTURE FRAMEPHONE-COVER TYPE OF GIFT IS NOT GOING TO HAVE THE MAXIMUM EFFECT. CONSIDER AN EXPERIENCE GIFT, CREATING A MEMORY THAT WILL LAST HIM A LIFETIME. THIS IS WHAT WE MEAN.

1

A smartwatch (that can read blood pressure) OK, you’re right. Not quite an experience but this is a multi-purpose gift that will save him from going to the doctor every time. With this gift, he can keep his health in check by himself. A smartwatch that reads blood pressure and can provide a ton of other health-related data (think steps, blood oxygen, heart rate, sleep etc.) is a great way of keeping him in tune with his body.

2

A rocket stove

Never interfere with Dad’s pot and question his culinary skills, but he will forgive you if you gift him a rocket stove. This is an efficient, hot-burning stove using small-diameter wood fuel. Fuel is burned in a simple combustion chamber containing an insulated vertical chimney, which ensures almost complete combustion before the flames reach the cooking surface.

Home massage seat

With this, we are making sure Dad gets some therapy time in his own relaxed space, without even leaving the house. The painkiller he is going to fall in love with from day one. So get it!

Skydiving

He only lives once. Get this adrenaline-rushing experience and make sure he has the best memories with this one. Whether over land or the ocean, just make sure he has quality picture moments that he will keep on reminiscing over. 5

Susanna Swart CREATING LIBERATION

THROUGH ART

THERE IS A GREAT SENSE OF FREEDOM AND HEALING WHEN ENCOUNTERING THE ART OF SUSANNA SWART. INBOUND SA’S TEMO MPODI SPOKE TO HER ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND HER INCREDIBLE ARTWORKS.

1. What is the inspiration behind your work?

My sculpture is grounded in the African landscape and out of rock, stone, driftwood, tree and plant inspiration they grow and become entities in their own right. If the viewer can find some form of visual healing in the beauty of the

form when they look at my work and a sense of peace, I have fulfilled my calling as an artist.

2. When did you find yourself sinking deep in this craft?

I have expressed myself from a very young age with clay and later on woodcarving, and as

32 INBOUNDSA / June 2024 ART

time passed, I just knew I wanted to become a sculptor. I studied BA Fine Art at UP and later went overseas to get a technical diploma in bronze casting and exposure to working in many different metals.

3. When you are behind every artwork that you create, does your soul drive the creativity more than your hands?

The soul must at all times drive the spark in the creative process. At some point, the ability to control and understand your medium- in my case bronze and stainless steel- becomes equally as important as the soul, talent and technical knowhow.

4. Your pieces speak freedom and liberation when I look at them.

Yes, you are correct. They portray a sense of the transcendental, feelings of metaphysical forms that meet you in your dreams. The soul can go any place and is not bound by this realm. I try to grasp a moment in between breaths and fuse it into a 3D form.

5. Can you elaborate?

I first model my idea in wax and from there, it goes through a 5-week process to cast it in bronze. Once the bronze piece comes back, I start making stainless steel rods around the bronze by heating it to red hot and hammering and welding it together to fuse with the bronze. From then on, I decide where I need sheet metal to incorporate into the piece and that gets plasma cut and manipulated through heat treatment and hammering to integrate with the piece to get to a final result.

6. Have you ever thought about proposing one of your pieces for Awards collaborations?

I DESIGN MAINLY FOR THE CREATIVE ARTS INDUSTRY LIKE THE ATKV MEDIA AWARDS AND US

I have designed and made many awards over the years. I design mainly for the Creative Arts industry like the ATKV Media Awards and US Woordfees, Net Music Awards. I am willing to collaborate in making awards with different organisations.

7. What does the future look like for your craft?

It is a tough industry and one must have more than just talent to survive. You need to be able to think out of the box and come up with new ideas all the time. The days when only galleries sold art for an artist to survive no longer exist. I mainly do commissioned work for individual clients. IB

CAR REVIEW 34 INBOUNDSA / June 2024

Omoda C5 Elegance

EXTRAORDINARY STYLE AND PERFORMANCE

MORE AND MORE CHINESE CARS ARE HITTING OUR ROADS. DESIGNERS ALREADY IMPRESSED US WITH THE CHERY TIGGO RANGE. NOW, OMODA BRYANSTON IN JOHANNESBURG INVITED US TO TRY OUT CHERY’S SO-CALLED COUSIN, THE OMODA C5.

The background

Since introducing Chery in South Africa in 2021, the company has impressed the most critical motor journalists with their Tiggo range. Since then, Chery South Africa has introduced Omoda as a sub-brand. The brand will operate on its own, independently from Chery.

The reason

The Palala Boutique Game Lodge at the Limpopo Province and Botswana border invited me for a three-day stay, and I needed a car, as the roads are pretty rural. The drive to the lodge is 4 hours and 30 minutes from Johannesburg, with about 30 minutes of gravel roads leading to the lodge. After this trip, Sun City awaited me for another three-day stay at the luxurious Lefika Villas. Thabazimbi in the northwest has quite challenging roads through the hills, and I needed a vehicle that could easily meander its way to Sun City. The Omoda C5 did not disappoint. At both venues, luxury met luxury.

The look

I heard from colleagues, friends, and motor journalists that the Omoda looks futuristically aggressive, and this was no understatement. The back of the car is quite something. Now, you have seen the Omoda on the road—sleek headlights, a bold V-shaped front grille, and a floating roof design. The Matrix taillights create a striking 3D effect, adding to the vehicle’s distinctive appearance.

The interior is as striking as the outside. This well-designed vehicle has leather on the steering wheel, seats, and inside of the doors, giving you the luxury cabin feeling. My personal favourite is the two 10.5-inch screens inside the car, which complete the premium feel. The safety assistance features irritate journalists, but I feel comfortable with them. If they annoy you (warning you if you are too close to another car, even alerting you when changing lanes), you can switch them off.

The drive

It feels great to sit inside the car. I must

June 2024 / INBOUNDSA 35 CAR REVIEW

compliment the manufacturers on the suspension design, making the drive feel smooth as I put my hands on the steering wheel. Navigating through the hills from Limpopo to Northwest province, the drive feels effortless. The sounds in the Omoda are not as loud as those of its cousin, the Chery Tiggo. The rather basic centre console follows the Chery trend by housing the control units for items such as the air conditioning and driver assist in the infotainment menu.

Despite its compact appearance, there is plenty of space inside for five people sitting comfortably. Many journalists believe the interior is minimalistic. I beg to differ. The sunroof is a nice touch on an exciting interior. In keeping with Chinese tradition, the Omoda has the familiar 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine found in the Chery range.

The C5 comes with two driving modes, Eco and Sport. This makes for a customisable driving experience, as you can change the steering feel, ride quality, and throttle response. The ride quality is good, and driving this car is a pleasurable experience.

The conclusion

The Chinese have kept up the surprise factor with the Omoda. They have produced a good car at an affordable price. I predict a good future for Omoda in South Africa. Omoda Bryanston, it’s a YES from me! IB

Sun City LEFIKA IS

A LUXURIOUS GEM

A WEEKEND BREAKAWAY WAS NEEDED TO CELEBRATE A SPECIAL FAMILY BIRTHDAY. WE ARE THE HOME AWAY FROM HOME TYPE OF HOLIDAYMAKERS. SO, A FEW OPTIONS CAME TO MIND. BUT SUN CITY’S LEFIKA LUXURY VILLAS TICKED ALL THE BOXES. TO MY FAMILY, ALL I MENTIONED WAS LUXURY AND, INSTANTLY, THEY SAID YES!

42 INBOUNDSA / June 2024
REVIEW

Sun City was built in 1979 when I was two years old. While I have always been a city guy, something always takes me back to the Valley of Waves, to Tthe Palace Hotel, to a vision created by the legendary Sol Kerzner. What is impressive is the continuous innovation created by the resort’s current owners. Say hello to the Sun Vacation Club’s new baby – Lefika luxury villas on a hill overlooking the resort and the towers of The Palace Hotel.

Lefika means stone in Setswana and is inspired by the nearby stone-walled Itlholanoga heritage site.

Okay, enough background. Let me get into it. As we arrive at a four-bedroom villa, the last one located on the hill, the thick natural stone walls, futuristic designs, and roof slab overhangs blow us away. This place screams luxury.

You walk into an open-plan room with a stateof-the-art kitchen with essentials, including a double-door fridge, dishwasher, and even a Nespresso machine. Yes, please. A long dining table divides the kitchen from the TV area. The flatscreen TV hangs on a stone wall. Next to it, a closed-combustion fireplace and an L-shaped couch. As in any modern home, there is always WiFi.

June 2024 / INBOUNDSA 43 REVIEW

The colour scheme is natural, with interior art, wallpaper and a hand-blown glass pendant light hanging from the ceiling. One guest bedroom with an ensuite is downstairs. This has been designed with the mobility-impaired in mind… those in wheelchairs or grandparents.

Outside, oh wait, let’s go upstairs first. The main bedroom is in the middle, with a huge balcony overlooking the valley. Two ensuite bedrooms are on either side of the main. A massive study desk with plug points and a washing machine complete the upstairs.

Two sliding doors open to the outside entertainment area. One large table is located next to the braai area (wood and firelighters were already placed there for us), a sitting area, a heated splash pool, and a boma area.

It was time for activities. The Segway is an hourlong activity where you ride (drive?) a Segway. Don’t worry. They take about 20 minutes to train you. About two minutes into the group driving, I ended up in a ditch, losing my balance. Some stranger made a U-turn and rushed to the Segway office to alert them. Within minutes, a

guide was there who assured me it was not my inability to ride the Segway, but the battery was flat.

We drove the Segways through the breathtaking golf course. Next up, the jump park. Our 21-yearold bounced while playing basketball, while the 11-year-old just jumped until she got tired. The day ended with ten-pin bowling in the entertainment centre before returning to the villa.

You are encouraged to leave your car at the villa and take one of Sun City’s minibuses (free of charge), but the wait can be irritating for some.

Lefika Villas is a MUST for anyone who wants to enjoy luxury away from their luxury. Book now at www.suninternational.com or the Sun City app. IB

JEWELLER TO THE STARS JENNA CLIFFORD’S FIRST JOB

Ihad never met a person who worked at a business for two years without getting paid—until I bumped into businesswoman, philanthropist, and jewellery- maker to the stars Jenna Clifford.

“I did everything in the factory. If Busi (the helper) was sick or off, I had to make the tea. I was also the receptionist. If I sold anything, I used to get a small commission. But basically, I didn’t get paid for about two years. My boss was nice. He said if you want to be here, work for nothing. And we will only train you when know you are serious about the jewellery business,” she says.

I was poor growing up

Jenna’s entrepreneurial skills started at school.

As a teenager, she was feisty, strong-willed and a go-getter. While the factory was her first real job, she ran her own business as a scholar, selling bracelets she made herself. “I used to make tickey bracelets. I took my father’s tickeys, which he kept in boxes. At that time, South Africa changed from tickey to rands and cents. So, he kept it in boxes and didn’t count them. I was removing them. I was not given pocket money, so I needed to make money.

“My grandfather was the only one who gave me money. He was a very kind man. On my birthday and at Christmas, he used to give me an envelope with R50 in it. He used to say ‘Jenny, go and put it in your Post Office savings’. And I did. That is how I learnt as a child growing up poor that you had to compound something.”

She fell pregnant soon after, but then tragedy hit. “I had a baby, but she died because of a bad surgical error during which I had to be resuscitated. She was breech and I needed a C-section. They turned her and she got the umbilical cord wound around her leg, which led to her death.”

No money. No job.

She fell pregnant again, and soon after the birth of the baby, her husband left her. “There I was, no money, no job. I needed to do something and feed my baby.” After hours, she started giving swimming lessons at a nearby school and worked at the factory during the day.

“The British had introduced these plain bands in the 60s and 70s and I wanted to change that.” Eventually, she started designing. In the nine years that followed, she eventually partnered with the boss until it was time to leave. Then, in 1992, Jenna Clifford Designs was born.

Today, the images along the passage in her building leading to her office speak volumes about her fame. Former President Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, the Williams sisters (yes, Serena and Venus), and even Debra Messing, who plays Grace in Will & Grace, hang on the walls. “Yep, she (Debra) flew into South Africa just to collect a piece from me. How amazing is that?” she says.

The big party

With 34 years in the business, Jenna Clifford has become a household name to the stars and the rich. A-listers attended her lavish celebrity parties. Hollywood stars would call her, making an order for a jewellery piece.

Today, we sit in her office reflecting on her life. But she has no jewellery on her hands. Huh? “This is just laziness. I have been away on a farm and got home yesterday. That is why I am not wearing anything.”

Divorced from her second husband, Jenna continues to live her best life. This year she turns 65 and plans a big party. We can’t wait for the invitation. IB

HEALTHY BENEFITS of G&T

(no, not the drink)

Ginger and Tumeric are two spices with a long history of traditional medicine. But these two together seems to have a greater effect, writes Granny Mouse Country House & Spa spokesperson Sean Granger.

Although each is great alone, they’re even better together. They prove to be a potent combination, specifically in cold-pressed immunity shots that have gained popularity since the COVID outbreak. A mere cough will have you adding one of these vitamin-packed shots to your basket.

Ginger (zingiber officinale) is the star ingredient in gingerbread, ginger ale and speculaas, plus an accompaniment to sushi. In addition to the great taste, it has medicinal benefits. It is known to boost the immune system, combatting seasonal coughs and colds. During flu season, ginger will be infused in various homemade concoctions for its antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal

properties. It is often used in detox diets as a weight loss aid, and helps with nausea and with indigestion, too.

Turmeric, a staple spice in South African kitchens and kitchens worldwide, is a natural wonder. It is used in face masks and lattes and as a sustainable fabric dye. It is a powerful spice known for its vibrant colour and unique flavour, and for making one glow from the inside out.

Not only are turmeric and ginger healthy for you, but they also add beauty to the garden. Plus, they are straightforward to grow, and you’ll love harvesting these organic treasures from your soil.

Ginger and turmeric are rhizomes and require

well-draining soil with plenty of sand and compost; ginger in a semi-shade position and turmeric in full sun, however, afternoon shade is acceptable. These are also long-season crops -plant in February/March to harvest the following year in February/March. People often leave their roots in the ground and only harvest in the second season. This will give you much sturdier plants and three times the roots than if you only waited one year. The choice is yours.

GINGER AND TURMERIC ARE TROPICAL PLANTS THAT WILL DO WELL IN ANY FROST-FREE AREA.

Ginger and turmeric are tropical plants that will do well in any frost-free area. If you get frost, planting them into a pot is highly recommended so you can move them when winter arrives. Planting in pots (at least 30cm deep) requires watering every two to three days. When planted in the ground, you should water every three to four days.

Grow ginger 5-10cm beneath the soil and turmeric 8cm beneath the soil—space each rhizome 30cm apart to give them room to grow to their full potential. You can harvest the ginger once the leaves begin to yellow and wilt (usually eight months after planting). Both G & T’s leaves, flowers, and roots are edible, so you can incorporate all parts of the plants into your meals.

You’ll need patience with your turmeric as it establishes itself. Once established, you can harvest pieces of root off the side of the plant throughout summer. Also, look out for the flowers that turmeric offers at the base of the plant. Enjoy the flowers, and know you can harvest your organic roots as soon as they die.

Once harvested, you can consume G & T fresh or store it in the fridge or freezer. To make your powders, cut the rhizomes into slices and leave them to dry before grinding them in a spice or coffee grinder. Turmeric is a natural dye, so you will want to handle it with care unless you want to turn your world yellow. IB

No phone FOR

40 DAYS!

IN THESE MODERN TIMES, IT IS UNIMAGINABLE FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS TO BE WITHOUT A CELL PHONE. BUT LEARNERS AT HOLY ROSARY SCHOOL IN EDENVALE, JOHANNESBURG, TOOK PART IN AN EXPERIMENT TO BE WITHOUT THEIR SMARTPHONES FOR 40 DAYS. AND THESE WERE THEIR FINDINGS, WRITES SCHOOL PRINCIPAL NATALIE MEERHOLZ.

Having been involved in girls’ education for numerous years, I’ve become increasingly concerned about the mental well-being of the children under my care. My observations of their smartphone usage indicate unhealthy habits and negative behaviour.

Listening to parents’ frustrations about managing these devices and their worries regarding their daughters’ disengagement due to excessive screen time, I felt compelled to mobilise our school into action. So, the Smart Age for Smart Phone campaign was launched—calling for the delay of smartphone ownership in primary school children—and started with a voluntary 40-day social media and phone-free challenge.

Armed with findings on school smartphone usage, I engaged the parent body. I presented research highlighting the potential negative impact of early smartphone ownership on young girls’ mental

WELLNESS
56 INBOUNDSA / June 2024

health in their teenage years. The response was overwhelming, emphasising the importance of parental support for the project’s success. Since our primary school already advocates for no smartphones at school, the challenge lay in extending this policy to home.

The disruption that followed was intense, and our girls weren’t happy. Thankfully, the uptake was unexpectedly high, with 76% of the Gr 4-7s pledging to participate. Many girls were scared to give up their smartphones. Some worried their ‘snap streaks’ would end and that they’d be left out of social dynamics within friendship groups.

During the 40 days, some girls journaled their experiences, and certain parents answered weekly questions about their children, sharing reflections on their phone-related pledges. Girls were supported at break time, where they could meet and share their feelings and frustrations.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT THEME TO EMERGE INITIALLY WAS BOREDOM

The most significant theme to emerge initially was boredom – our girls didn’t know what to do with their time. Parents found this difficult to manage. By the end of the period, girls reported that they’d discovered new hobbies, reading more, being more engaged with family, sleeping better, being less irritable, and being happier. Some reported that they didn’t miss the “social media drama” on WhatsApp.

With the 40-day goal reached, 44% of girls completed the challenge without accessing their devices at all. A total of 28% stuck to it most of the time, with some cheat days, while over 5% couldn’t meet the challenge; 23% of those who pledged don’t own phones but wanted to support their friends.

We need to get our pupils off phones and into the world, and our initiative is just the start of this process. IB

FITNESS 4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD CONTINUE TO exercise this winter! 58 INBOUNDSA / June 2024

WINTER IS THAT TIME WHEN A LOT OF PEOPLE GET SLUGGISH ABOUT KEEPING UP WITH GYM, RUNNING OUTSIDE OR TAKING A WALK. BUT THIS IS THE TIME TO GO HARD AT IT AND MAKE SURE YOUR HEALTH IS IN GOOD CHECK. LET’S TELL YOU WHY.

1. Strengthen your immune system and build endurance

We know it might not be your favourite season to work out, but training in cold weather offers great benefits you might not be aware of. Exercising during the cooler months can strengthen your immune system, helping you fend off the common colds typical of this season.

On top of that, cold-weather training has been proven to boost endurance. Facing more challenging conditions cultivates excellent training habits that can carry over into warmer weather, increasing the likelihood of maintaining your fitness routine year-round. So go for it!

2. Ward off the winter blues

Many of us lose motivation during this time of year. As the days grow darker and colder, we tend to hibernate, feel less energetic, and may even experience a mood dip. One of the best ways to battle these winter blues is to stay physically active. Even if it’s just a few times a week,

exercise can significantly boost your mood and well-being. Remember, training is crucial not only for your physical health but also for your mental health.

3. Enjoy the perfect conditions indoors

It is a tough ask to train outdoors when it is cold, dark and wet, but a fitness centre has the perfect conditions to train in all year round – rain, hail or shine. With many people deciding to hibernate for the winter, this is great news for you and your training schedule. You get more attention from instructors and staff and there’s no waiting to use your favourite machine or equipment. This means you stay more disciplined with your exercise routine and boosts your chances of smashing those fitness goals you set at the start of the year.

4. Kick out winter kilos

We are maintaining that weight off, honey! Winter often brings less physical activity, increased food consumption, and a more inactive and slower lifestyle, which can lead to unwanted weight gain. So, it’s essential to keep exercising, or even ramp up your training routine. A consistent winter workout routine will help you maintain the physique you achieved earlier in the year and ensure you’re ready for that swimsuit season. IB

READY FOR THE

Dune

Holidays.

JUST IN CASE THE DEFENDER 110 WASN’T BIG ENOUGH, LAND ROVER HAVE ADDED AN EXTRA 340MM AND ANOTHER SEAT TO THIS SUBLIMELY CAPABLE SUV. WE SPENT SOME TIME WITH THE 8-SEATER DEFENDER 130 FROM LAND ROVER CONSTANTIABERG, AT THE ATLANTIS DUNES OUTSIDE CAPE TOWN, AND FIND THAT SPACE IS POSSIBLY THE MOST OVERLOOKED LUXURY WHEN TAKING THE FAMILY ON A HOLIDAY.

TEST DRIVE FEATURE

he Defender is probably my favourite model in the current range of new generation Land Rovers. Don’t get me wrong, the entire line-up, from the aweinspiring Range Rover to the generously practical Discovery, is superb. But if it was my money, I’d take the Defender. To me it’s the perfect balance of comfort, capability and every day usability.

To be honest, I’ve never thought the Defender needed more space. The current 110 is more than generous for a family of four with sizeable amounts of luggage space and convenience compartments. So when Kobus Slabber, from Land Rover Constantiaberg suggested I spend some family time with the 8-seater Defender 130 at Atlantis Dunes, I was more than a little sceptical.

After collecting the car from Land Rover Constantiaberg, I took a leisurely drive to the hotel to get the family, taking time to adjust to the size of this imposing SUV.

Surprisingly, this was a lot easier than I expected. Yes it’s big, but the size doesn’t seem to impact the onroad dynamics of the vehicle. It just feels like a regular Defender with the same commanding driving position and beautifully thought out cockpit.

After seeing the 130, my two daughters immediately started debating who gets the back row and who sits in the middle. With the older sister winning the

debate, the bags were loaded into the sizeable boot (even with three rows of seats up), and we were on our way. It’s at this moment when I started to understand the idea behind the Defender 130.

More than just adding a third row of seats and 34cm to the rear, the big Defender is all about options. The 8 seats are big enough for real South African sized men, the boot, with the 3rd row folded down, is massive, and if you need panel van sized space, just fold the second row down. All in a supremely capable, comfortable SUV, that’s as easy to use on the school run, as it is to use on a surfing trip with the boys up the West Coast.

Even the 3.0L diesel powertrain of this D350 seems unfussed by the extra weight and size of the 130. It’s testament to this rock solid powertrain.

The real surprise is the ease at which the 130 moves it’s substantial bulk. The extra 340mm doesn’t seem to have compromised it’s capability at all.

Of course this is a Defender, so it has to be good on the rough stuff. And it is, with the usual Defender systems and abilities such as a twinspeed transfer box for low range, a wading depth of 900mm and the sheer wizardry of Land Rover’s Terrain Response system. Even the extra length and overhang of the third row seats doesn’t affect the departure angle significantly.

Our time on the dunes was fantastic, with the Terrain Response doing all the work, and the family able to relax in comfort, even with my limited 4x4 expertise.

This is what I love most about the Defender 130it removes the drama from every situation, and creates a spacious sanctuary where you and 7 of your closest adventurous friends, can actually enjoy the experience and know that no matter the terrain this big 4x4 can tackle it with ease.

The 2024 Defender 130 is available from Land Rover Constantiaberg starting from R1 996 300.

Palala Boutique Game Lodge A SURPRISE AT EVERY CORNER

LOCATED NEXT TO THE LIMPOPO RIVER BORDERING BOTSWANA, PALALA BOUTIQUE GAME LODGE IS THE PERFECT BUSH BREAK-AWAY. THE WEATHER (CHILLY AT NIGHT AND WARM DURING THE DAY), THE FOOD (ELABORATE PRESENTATION), THE SPA (RELAXING, NEED WE SAY MORE?) AND THE WILD ANIMALS (A HUGE VARIETY INCLUDING LIONS) ARE JUST SOME OF THE ELEMENTS THAT MAKE UP THIS AMAZING EXPERIENCE.

Ithink game drives and living in the bush are among the most incredible experiences we city slickers can have. However, I will let you in on a little secret. I am scared of wild animals but addicted to the thrill of coming close to lions, crocodiles, lizards, bokkies, and giraffes.

As I stopped at the gates of Palala, John, the security guard greeted me and instructed me to drive at 20-30km/h. As I entered the grounds, I understood why when I saw a bok stare at me from the bush. About 5 minutes on, a little warthog crossed the road. I finally stopped at reception. Ops manager Nandipha greeted me. Never (his name) grabbed my luggage while another Ops manager, Garth, took my car to park it somewhere on the property. Someone else checked me in while I was offered sparkling wine to make my check-in smooth.

The room was fit for a king. I was staying at “The Nest,” which is generally a honeymoon suite. It has two bathrooms, a massive lounge with a flat-screen TV, and a bedroom with a fireplace and another TV. The bigger bathroom has an oval bath, shower, and twin vanity area. The vast windows make your view of the bush even better.

You have probably been to other 5-star safari experiences, but Palala has it all for me. First was a picnic with owner Maria Du Plessis next to the Limpopo River. She said this was a family farm turned into a game lodge, with management always looking for something to improve.

“Everything seems so perfect”, I exclaimed. As we sat on the grass, a metre-long lizard walked by.

“He is not going to do anything to us,” she smiled as she saw the panic on my face. In front

of us was a wide variety of gourmet meals from chicken to lamb and biltong. To wash it all down, Durbanville Hills white wine.

The following day, at 7 am, a driver picked me up, and off we went on a morning game drive. Note that it might be cold, but they provide hot water bottles and a blanket. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable about animals and even trees, showing me the famous Marula tree and some of the trees used as medicine by African tribes.

Palala loves surprises. The staff have been trained to surprise guests. As we drove past the crocodiles (babies, thankfully), I saw a picnic table waiting in the middle of the bush with one of the waiters welcoming me. On the table, Amarula Cream, sparkling wine, and cheese. I immediately dove in. Ten minutes later, we continued driving into the bushes, even along the border.

At 11 am, the Sediko Bush Spa awaited me. After a brief tour by Karen, she took me to one of the rooms and took out every stress knob I might have had on my back in an hour-long Swedish massage. After the massage, she did a full consultation to advise which products I need to use to keep my skin moist. But the experience was not over yet. Another surprise was in store: a Merlot bath (a bath full of wine) awaited me outside. Next to the tub was a bottle of Merlot and biltong, cheese, and fruit. Next to it was Sibusiso, the barman, who advised how to pair

the foods with the Merlot. But be warned, after this experience, you will want to nap.

I skipped lunch as I was still too full from the drive and the spa. At 4 pm, a driver came to fetch me for the boat cruise on the Limpopo River. We saw hippos and crocodiles. Inside the boat, various foods (all presented in 5-star style) and drinks were served. Our guide, Riley, was armed with knowledge of crocodiles, even taking us close to a 2-metre crocodile catching some sun along the riverbank.

Back home, it was time for supper. Ops Manager Garth joined me and told me how much he enjoyed nature and that the animals have become part of Palala. Chef Danny outdid himself with a leek soup and salmon starter and fried rice for mains. There was no room for dessert. As I announced I needed to leave at 5 am the following day, Garth made sure I had breakfast to take with me. Check-out was smooth and effortless. Inside the breakfast box were little elements of surprise: chocolate, fruit, juice, and a muffin.

As I say goodbye, Nandipha insists on driving with me to the main gate to ensure I am safe, even Garth and Maria calling to find out if I arrived safely at my next destination. Maya Angelou’s words immediately came to mind: people will not remember what you said but will always remember how you made them feel. IB

2. Nyika Plateau – walking amongst wildlife

Height: 2 600m Estimated hiking time: 1-5 days (depending on route).

Located in northern Malawi, Nyika National Park covers an area of 2 012km2. This is the largest national park in Malawi as well as its oldest. Almost the entire Nyika Plateau is designated as a national park, and the landscape of rolling hills, grasslands and flowers is stunning. Nyika means “where the water comes from”, and the plateau is Malawi’s most important catchment area. It is also home to nearly 100 species of mammal, 400 species of bird and the richest orchid population in south-central Africa, with more than 200 species (27 endemic) in bloom during the rainy season. Walking at Nyika Plateau is undeniably one of the best ways to explore this unique and wildlife-rich wilderness. There are marked trails for those keen to hike and camp for a few days. The three-day hike from Nyika to Livingstonia Trail (40km) is best of all. (Mountain bikes can also be hired at the lodge).

3. Zomba Plateau – experience the most spectacular scenery

Height: 2 087m Estimated hiking time: 1-8 hours (depending on route).

Zomba Plateau, approximately 50 miles north of Blantyre, rises from the surrounding plain, an oasis of beauty and calm, and easier to access (if less wild) than Mulanje. The plateau extends behind the sleepy and attractive Zomba Town (Malawi’s first capital until 1974).

The plateau is a huge mountain of about 129km2, with its highest point, Malombe Peak, 2 087m above sea level. It’s an excellent place for walking and hiking, with several easily followed roads and trails. The view from the top of Malombe is so beautiful it was known as “the best in the British Empire” during the colonial period. Forests, hills and streams, serval cats, bushbuck, samango monkeys, giant butterflies and baboons; the plateau has pine plantations, rolling grasslands, forests, scrub and woodland and numerous spots to take in the views. 4. Senga Hills (Senga Bay, Salima) –magnificent view of Lake Malawi from the top

Height: 488m Estimated hiking time: 1.5 to 5 hours (depending on route).

About 113km from Lilongwe, Senga Hills rises from the lakeshore at Senga Bay in Salima District. Senga Bay is popular as the closest beach resort to Lilongwe, but it is also nice to see the lake from the top of the hills. There are seven hills here, within the Senga Hills Forest Reserve, all of which offer wonderful views of Lake Malawi - there are not many places offering a panoramic view of Lake Malawi from the top of a mountain like the Senga Hills. The most popular trail takes you to the top of all seven hills and takes about 5 hours to hike. But a 90-minute round trip to the top of the first hill will also be a great experience. The starting point is a left-turn just before the entrance to the Sunbird Livingstonia Hotel. Some of the hills are a bit steep and first-time hikers should take a guide, as it can be difficult to find the route.

5. Viphya Plateau (Mzimba) – discover the largest man-made forest in Africa

Height: 1 700m Estimated hiking time: 3 hours to 3 days (depending on route).

Rising from the shore of Lake Malawi to 1 700m, the Viphya plateau is home to the Viphya Forest Reserve, which covers an area of 558km2 and is the largest planted forest in Africa. This is a lovely highland wilderness with several beautiful rivers flowing through it and into Lake Malawi. There are excellent hiking trails around Luwawa Forest Lodge, with marked paths (the lodge provides guided hikes). The area is also great for birdwatching, with more than 280 species to see. The most popular walk takes three days, beginning at Kawandama Hills, passing through the Viphya Forest wilderness, descending the steep slopes of the Rift Valley and finishing near the Kande Beach Resort on the shores of Lake Malawi.

Although the trails vary in length and difficulty, from easy walks to thrilling hikes, they are wellsignposted. You can take a day trip from Lilongwe or stay at Dzalanyama Forest Lodge for the weekend to enjoy the hikes.

7. Blue Zebra Island (Lake Malawi)

– exploring a remote and beautiful island paradise

Estimated hiking time: 1 hour.

Blue Zebra Island Lodge is on Nankoma Island in the Marelli Archipelago. Access to the island is via a 20-minute boat ride across the lake. Lake Malawi is known for its waterbased activities. But on Nankoma Island you’ll also find a 2.4km nature trail that circles the island, passing through old fig trees and giant baobab trees. The walk is leisurely, but a steep slope leads up to the summit, where a breathtaking panoramic view awaits. If you set out in the early morning you might be fortunate enough to see duikers and bushbuck on your walk. The cooler months from April to September are ideal for hiking, whether it’s clambering over boulders or taking a serene stroll. TRAVEL WITH Tracey-Lee Oliver

The last country I travelled to was the United States of America. I went to Washington DC and New York.

What I loved about the country was that it was everything I expected it to be. All that I had seen on TV is what I experienced.

What I found challenging was that it was terribly cold. It was winter. Also, I had travelled a lot for work in the past and in a group but this time I travelled alone. That was challenging.

The food was something I did not really explore. I had no takeout food. I went to restaurants that serve either Mozambican, Indian or Mexican cuisine. But these are technically not American foods.

I would recommend the States

because of Times Square. It was a huge thing for me. There are big screens everywhere, adverts and a lot of tourists walking up and down. I went because I have family there. I enjoyed Washington DC more than New York. It is just more spacious. New York was a bit too tight for me.

My next trip is to Los Angeles. I prefer open spaces.IB

CUTTING EDGE TECH AT Club Med Exclusive Collection’s VAL D’ISÈRE RESORT IN FRANCE

THE SOPHISTICATED ALPINE INTERIOR OF THIS NEWLY RENOVATED RESORT IS WARM, INVITING AND UNMISTAKABLY MODERN. THIS AESTHETIC IS COMPLEMENTED BY INTELLIGENT DESIGN ELEMENTS THAT FACILITATE AN EFFORTLESS TRANSITION FROM ARRIVAL TO RELAXATION.

If you ski, you will know Val d’Isère or Val as the locals call it. Steeped in history, its very first hotel opened in 1888. In 1930, the skiing trend arrived in Val d’Isère and two decades later, after the war, the emergence of winter sports started climbing.

In 1955, Val d’Isère Sports Club decided to host a competition at the beginning of December, to attract skiers in training, and within a few years, the French ski team’s results encouraged skiers from across the world to add the Criterium event to their competition programme. To this day, one stage of the World Cup now takes place on the Oreiller-Killy slope, and another on the legendary Face de Bellevarde run. One of the Grand Masters of The Alps, Val d’Isère is real class.

Since emerging from the pandemic, travel is an evolving landscape demanding intelligence and sustainability in addition to luxury. With the Val d’Isère resort, Club Med Exclusive Collection has timed its response beautifully, emphasising functionality, environmental awareness, and a

seamless blend of tradition and cutting-edge technology.

The resort’s use of its own app enhances the guest experience from the outset, managing details like ski pass distribution, equipment fittings, and lesson scheduling, which would normally consume the first day of a ski holiday. Guests are swiftly outfitted and ready to hit the slopes within moments of arrival, thanks to a meticulously planned ‘ski-in, ski-out’ infrastructure. This design ingenuity not only maximises time for skiing but also simplifies the logistics associated with ski vacations, especially for those travelling from afar.

A commitment to sustainability is woven through its operations and physical structure. The recent renovation adheres to BREEAM standards, ensuring that eco-friendly practices are embedded in everything from energy management to material choices. This dedication to green practices is not an afterthought but a foundational feature, appealing to travellers

increasingly concerned with their environmental impact.

Even the nightlife and social offerings have been curated to reflect the post-pandemic shift in travel preferences. Spaces are designed to foster social interaction while respecting personal space, offering vibrant yet comfortable settings for après-ski activities. From DJ sets to cocktail hours, the resort provides diverse entertainment options that cater to both families and couples, ensuring that every guest finds something to enhance their evening.

This project, a pioneer in the Alps for Club Med, is perfectly timed to address the evolving needs of modern travellers. It provides a holistic experience that transcends traditional skiing holidays by incorporating luxury, sustainability, and efficiency into every aspect. The resort’s approach to travel— where every detail, from room design to guest services is thoughtfully considered—sets a new standard in the hospitality industry.

Moreover, the expansive wellness facilities, including a spa partnered with Cinq Mondes, offer guests a chance to indulge in self-care after a day on the slopes. The range of wellness activities, from yoga classes to thermal spa treatments, underscores the resort’s commitment

to providing a rejuvenating environment for all guests.

With its intelligent design, commitment to sustainability, and comprehensive understanding of changing travel dynamics, Val d’Isère is a beacon for future all-inclusive developments in the luxury ski industry. We will be seeing a lot more of this across the travel industry this decade. IB

New Zealand A

MELTING POT OF GLOBAL CUISINES!

76 INBOUNDSA / June 2024 LIVING ABROAD

PACKING UP AND LEAVING A COUNTRY YOU CALLED HOME, IS NOT EASY. BUT IF YOU’RE OPEN TO EXPERIENCING NEW CULTURES AND FOODS, NEW ZEALAND SHOULD BE ON YOUR LIST. DRAG QUEEN AND TV PRESENTER BETTY BANGLES (REAL NAME BERNARD BUYS) TELLS US WHY.

How long have you been living in Auckland and why did you move there?

I’ve been in Auckland for almost a year now. Since I can remember I had a fascination with other countries and wanted to live abroad. I will always love South Africa, but I was tired of being angry every day with everything going on there and I felt like I needed more out of life, so I decided to take the leap.

What is it that you love about the New Zealand culture?

Oh my goodness! Do you have enough space in this magazine? First, everyone follows the rules here and call you out if you don’t. New Zealanders are also extremely friendly and helpful. I’m still confused when cars stop for pedestrians to cross the road regardless of whether there’s a pedestrian crossing or not. But the thing I love most is how safe it is. It took me a while to get used to the fact that you don’t have to look over your shoulder when going for a walk.

What was your biggest adaption when you moved there?

Oh, definitely the speed limits! Hahaha! with limits of 100kmph on highways and 40kmph to 50kmph in suburban areas, it was difficult at first for a heavy-footed Gautenger like me! But honestly, because everyone obeys the rules and Frikkie with his Ford Ranger is not driving on your ass, you don’t feel the need to rush.

What do you love about the food in the area you are in now?

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am quite partial to food. I mean, do I look like a picky eater? Haha, the food here is great because New Zealand

consists of so many different cultures, it’s a melting pot of cuisines from around the world!

What do you find most challenging in this town you live in?

Honestly, nothing. I think the most difficult thing about emigrating was giving up a career that I built over 23 years and having to start over. But it’s also very exciting at the same time. During the week i work as a hairstylist at a big salon group and at the weekend I perform at Caluzzi Cabaret, which is owned by Ru Paul’s drag race stars, Kita Mean & Anita Wigl’it. The opportunities are endless!

What do you miss about South Africa?

The food in New Zealand is great but I must admit that we are spoilt with fantastic restaurants with affordable food in South Africa. I miss going for dinner and not having to pay R600 for a steak. I miss my friends and family the most. I have the most amazing network of loved ones back home and I wouldn’t have been able to do all this without their support.

What do you do when you miss South Africa?

When I miss home, I phone my cousin who also lives here in Auckland. She is my rock and always knows what to say. It’s not always what I want to hear, but always what I need to hear. I also remind myself daily of everything I gained since moving here, which is not difficult when you just look around you.

Any advice to someone who is thinking about emigrating to NZ?

Do it!! Just make sure you do it for the right reasons. and when you do, embrace your new country. Try new things and be open to change. IB

LEADS TO BAD CONSEQUENCES Micromanagement

MEET THE CEO
Merissa Himraj Wavemaker South Africa
78 INBOUNDSA / June 2024

SHE WAS NAMED SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST ADMIRED MEDIA PERSON IN 2024 AND HEADS UP A MEDIA SOLUTIONS COMPANY. MERISSA HIMRAJ IS STRATEGIC WITH HER MANAGEMENT STYLE BUT ADMITS THE LAPTOP GOES WITH HER WHEN SHE GOES ON HOLIDAY.

How did you get this job?

I joined Wavemaker in August 2014 as a business unit manager, before taking on the role of CEO of SSA (Sub-Saharan Africa).

How did you start out in the field?

My career started in finance. I was a financial manager and did media planning, finance, and HR.

They say there is a difference between being a manager and a leader. Which one are you?

A leader. While both leadership and management are essential for organisational success, effective leaders often possess vision, inspiration, empowerment, emotional intelligence, adaptability, strategic thinking, and a willingness to take risks. By embodying these qualities, leaders can inspire their teams to achieve exceptional results and confidently navigate complex challenges.

Is having a micromanager in the office a bad thing and why?

Yes, while some managers may feel that micromanaging ensures quality and control, it typically leads to a host of negative consequences that outweigh any perceived benefits. Encouraging trust, autonomy, and accountability among employees fosters a more positive and productive work environment.

If a stranger sits next to you on a plane and asks you what your company does, what would you say?

We shape communication and grow brands through our amazing data, technology and media solutions. We ask provocative questions that make you think about your brand differently.

What have you found to be the biggest misconception about your company?

Some people think that Wavemaker is a “young”

agency, due to the name change that happened in 2018. In reality, we have been around since 1996.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

The role of a CEO comes with numerous challenges, but one of the most significant is the need to balance competing priorities and make decisions that affect the entire organisation. This role is multifaceted and demanding, requiring strong leadership skills, strategic thinking, resilience, and the ability to inspire and motivate others.

When you go on a holiday with family and friends, do you take your laptop with you and why?

Yes, I take it with me, I do need to be accessible and manage any emergency that might arise. What I am good at is keeping boundaries and respecting that I am with my family, so I have strict rules on when I check emails or respond.

What has been your biggest crisis as CEO and how did you navigate the company through this storm?

Being responsible for so many staff and their wellbeing is a big responsibility, and I have had many learnings. Putting people first while also growing careers and capabilities in a changing landscape will always be a challenge that CEOs navigate.

A colleague is not meeting targets. What is the first thing you do to handle this situation?

The first step when a colleague is not meeting targets is to approach the situation with empathy, open-mindedness, and a desire to understand the root cause of the issue.

What is your vision as CEO for the people working in your company?

To be the best of themselves, to push boundaries and to positively provoke growth for themselves and their clients. IB

MIKAEEL MOTI’S BLUEPRINT TO SUCCESS:

How Gen Z’s future magnates can plan for success right now

Generation Z has a unique approach to business and entrepreneurship that successfully blends both traditional and new-age business practices, ideally positioning our generation as leaders in building a future where success is not just defined by profits, but also purpose and passion.

80 INBOUNDSA / June 2024

For example, Gen Z can seamlessly integrate digital technologies to maximise efficiency in work processes, while still prioritising genuine human connections and interactions. We understand the importance of achieving work-life balance that prioritises individual well-being without compromising productivity. We are agile, curious, and questioning, learning from established businesses, but also keen to roll up our sleeves and apply our minds to developing new, innovative solutions, and to forge our own paths as entrepreneurs and market disruptors.

As a result, companies that emphasise hiring and upskilling Gen Z workers stand to gain a significant competitive advantage in marrying the old with the new, and better understanding and catering to this young and increasingly powerful consumer group.

As a result, companies that emphasise hiring and upskilling Gen Z workers stand to gain a significant competitive advantage in marrying the old with the new, and better understanding and catering to this young and increasingly powerful consumer group.

However, the onus also falls on members of Gen Z to develop, refine, and pursue our blueprints for future business success, whether your dream is to reach a wellsalaried, management level position or to build the next great brand or booming business empire.

To formulate that blueprint, we must rely on and utilise the qualities that define our generation. Incorporate these four tips into your plans to ensure that you ultimately reach your business goals:

1. Welcome change

The only constant is change. This rings truer than ever for Gen Z, having grown up in a world where marketchanging technologies are being developed and released every few months, and social media trends change in the blink of an eye.

This adaptability is arguably Gen Z’s greatest strength. It’s important to stay flexible and be willing to pivot at a moment’s notice. When laying out your plan for the future, make sure to retain that flexibility, and be open to changing anything and everything whenever a new opportunity presents itself.

2. Leverage your ability to learn

As the first generation to truly grow up with the internet in its modern form, Gen Z has always had the world’s information right at our fingertips, making us naturally adept at researching and learning new skills online. This ability and willingness to learn further extends offline and

into a working environment, and can serve as a real asset both as employees and as business leaders.

So, in laying out your blueprint for future business success, continue to actively seek out opportunities to learn and grow. This may involve taking on new projects, learning new skills, or seeking feedback from peers and mentors.

Don’t wait for an invitation. Take the initiative and put your hand up for new projects at your job, demonstrating to everyone that you’re eager to learn and grow. Whenever you do something new, ask for open and honest feedback. If it’s not all positive, remember that it’s not a reflection on you personally, and approach criticism as an opportunity to improve.

3. Bank on your pragmatism

Gen Z is known for questioning the status quo and isn’t afraid to challenge it. Driven by more than just a need to disrupt for the sake of being disruptive, we’re able to identify inefficiencies and areas ripe for enhancement.

We can then utilise our natural pragmatism and skills to streamline workflows, implement emerging technologies, or rethinking business strategies to drive innovation and the triple bottom line of profits, people or social equity, and planet or environmental sustainability.

4. Embrace your desire to make a difference

Growing up in a world marred by what sometimes seem like insurmountable challenges, from inequality and social unrest to climate change and resource scarcity, Gen Z has a strong desire to change the world for the better.

The most practical and effective way to achieve sustainability goals is, arguably, by working at or founding companies with the capacity to make a difference. This could involve creating products that solve social issues, implementing sustainable business practices, or using our platforms to advocate for change.

Building a career or business with the aim of one day becoming an impactful leader requires concentration, endurance and determination, and a willingness to learn from seasoned mentors with decades of experience behind them.

Be open to new ideas, embrace change, and learn to lead by example. These qualities will lay a foundation on which you can shape your trajectory, build a successful future, and realise your dreams and aspirations of reaching the c-suite or founding your own successful company.

HOW COMPANIES ARE wasting ON BUSINESS TRAVEL money

82 INBOUNDSA / June 2024

AS COMPANIES LOOK TO TIGHTEN THEIR BELTS, SQUEEZING EVERY DROP OF VALUE OUT OF YOUR TRAVEL BUDGET IS CRUCIAL FOR STAYING AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION. BUSINESS TRAVEL IS OFTEN ONE OF THE BIGGEST EXPENSES COMPANIES FACE, SO IT’S IMPORTANT TO FIND SMART WAYS TO OPTIMISE THIS SPENDING, WRITES FCM TRAVEL GM BONNIE SMITH.

By proactively managing and enhancing the value of corporate travel, organisations can unlock resources to invest in other highimpact initiatives. Here are five areas where savings could be made.

1. Limiting accommodation choices to selected partners

According to Finances Online research, meals comprise the most significant portion of a typical business travel budget, accounting for 21% of costs per trip. If breakfast isn’t covered in the per diem, many business travellers simply add the hotel breakfast to their post-trip expense claim, which can add an average of £11.20 (about R260) per day (OTA data) when travelling in Europe, for example. To control meal and accommodation expenses, businesses should leverage their negotiating power by consolidating bookings with fewer preferred hotel partners.

2. Booking business travel during offpeak periods

Booking business travel during peak periods can significantly drive up travel and accommodation costs as hotels and transport operators charge premium rates. Peak tourist seasons, school holidays, and major conferences can also affect accommodation prices, as can major sporting events and music tours. Check the calendar for your destination and shift the dates of your business trip to avoid clashes with large events where feasible.

3. Ridesharing rather than renting

Rideshares like Uber and Bolt have become a popular mode of travel for business travellers due to their convenience. Travellers can hail a ride at any time, avoid the need for parking, and quickly charge the cost to their company through options like Uber for Business.

However, note that surge pricing during peak times can lead to significantly higher fares. The unpredictable pricing can make budgeting difficult, so, for airport to hotel transfers, for example, consider the option of hotel shuttles, or compare premium rideshare rates with fixed taxi fares to get the best deal.

4. Booking flights online

Relying solely on online booking tools for business air travel can lead to hidden fees such as extra charges for checked luggage and seat selection that appear at the end of the booking process. This makes cost comparison difficult. However, corporate travel agents and business travel specialists can provide specific advantages. Leveraging the large volumes of travellers they work with, these agents can secure discounts on flights unavailable to the average corporate booker alone.

5. Missing opportunities for cost savings

One of the most important things businesses can do to keep their travel budget in check is to identify and track unexpected costs. Aside from travel and accommodation, many ancillary fees such as airport transportation, wifi fees, or early check-in/late checkout charges can significantly inflate the total spend if you’re not vigilant.

Businesses must ask relevant questions to gain visibility into these hidden expenses. By identifying those who incur the most in additional costs, and the specific trips or destinations with the highest level of unexpected spending, companies can integrate the travel booking system with the expense management platform, and automate the generation of detailed reports to identify these trends. Fierce, Fun + Fab

WHEN HE MENTIONED BDSM I THOUGHT IT WAS A NEW KIND OF SANDWICH. SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SIGN TO DO SOME QUICK GOOGLE RESEARCH BEFORE AGREEING TO ANYTHING.

Dear Self,

Remember when I decided to go all out and date folks a decade older, like slightly senior citizens? Yeah, that plan blew up in my face! Swiping, matching and chatting led to a decent first date with this guy. Things went well until the second date when he hit me with, “What am I?” I proudly listed off my fabulous traits: strong, independent, all that jazz. Little did I know, he wasn’t interested in that; he was referring to a world I thought only existed in X-rated movies.

is the new Kinky

Sexy

“What am I in terms of kink?” he meant. Eyes wide, I blurt out something like, “Uh... well... starfish pose, you know”. Next thing I know, he’s sending me a link for a full-on BDSM test. Intrigued, burning with curiosity being the true Aries that I am, I signed up, logged in and furiously answered the series of questions on the test. Some were rather weird, like, “Do you enjoy behaving like a child?” or “Do you love being tied up with zero control?”

Despite the odd questions, the BDSM quiz results revealed quite a lot about me. Shocking? Exciting? A bit of both, I’m telling you! Turns out, I’m not all vanilla. If you’ve ever wondered about

your own kinks, know that you’re not alone. I took the quiz to figure out if I was a Dom, Sub, Switch, Brat, or anything in between.

Now, full disclosure, the journey didn’t end there. Embracing this newfound knowledge about myself opened up a whole new world of exploration and understanding. It wasn’t just about labels or categories; it was about discovering layers of myself that I never knew existed. And let me tell you, it’s been quite the adventure! Little did he know, that date of mine, when he introduced me to Fetlife (https://fetlife. com/), turning me into a Fetlife heroine. Oh, the places you’ll go!

Kinky is the new sexy, whether it’s for fun or self-discovery. Thanks to this guy, I discovered who I really am on the shadow side!

Stay Spicy. IB

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF DISPOSSESSION

So, this book is about the failure of land reform in SA?

Yes. It is a story of betrayal and shattered dreams, told through the voices of communities who share their darkest moments of dispossession and living and working on white-owned farms and their painful experiences living in barren villages.

What is your message?

Beyond the devastating impact of land reform on affected communities, the big message of the book is that land reform can be such a polarising issue that it may threaten national unity if it is not dealt with prudently, judiciously, and expeditiously.

Who should read this?

Broadly speaking, the book is aimed at communities affected by issues of dispossession, landlessness, and urban migration as well as the concomitant problems of joblessness and urban squalor. It is also aimed at white farmers whose businesses may be affected by the ongoing uncertainties and anxieties around land reform in South Africa. High-ranking government officials, including Cabinet ministers, as well as politicians, NGOs, policy makers on land and agrarian economy issues will find it appealing.
