HOW TIME FLIES!

A YEAR AGO, ARMED WITH A PASSION FOR TELLING STORIES, I ENTERED THE OFFICES OF MEDIA XPOSE AS EDITOR OF THE MAGAZINE YOU ARE READING. PUBLISHER ELROY VAN HEERDEN-MAYS WAS CLEAR – GIVE US A LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE THAT SPEAKS TO BUSINESS AND LEISURE TRAVELLERS. THIS MONTH, INBOUND SA MAGAZINE TURNS ONE YEAR OLD.

First we had to persuade brands to come on board and make InBound their home of advertising choice. Fortunately, Media Xpose has a long relationship with their clients which made things easier. Then, we had to persuade celebrities to share with us their stories. And we did.

The ride was insane. We had covers with amazing individuals who are masters in their crafts. Our content spoke to the traveller. We feature articles about SA, the continent and even the globe. And soon, brands and marketing agencies started taking notice of us.

As we grew, more good news. We are going onboard SAA flights both local and international. I was over the moon. But we are not done yet. We are still committed to giving you the best articles. And November is no different. Apart from it being our birthday, where the rugby season slowly draws to a close. And what better way to feature rugby star Cheslin Kolbe to talk about his travels? Still, with travels, we meet Nicole Carlse, a Boeing pilot with the voice of an angel. We also catch up with musician Connell Cruise to talk about his life in the States. In the travel section, we take you on a journey through the breathtaking Seychelles and Namibia.

We hope you enjoy this issue

THIS MONTH’S BURNING QUESTION…

Can you get sick from eating street food?

ANSWER: Not really! Trying local cuisine when travelling is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in a destination’s culture, history, and traditions. It is often quick and affordable, and you can watch it being prepared right in front of you –three fantastic perks for any traveller. Our advice? We say, go for it!

YOUR SHOCKING TRAVEL STORIES

GHOSTLY HOTEL GUESTS

I don’t believe in ghosts…. Until a client booked me into a beautiful, old historical hotel in the Valley of a Thousand Hills in KZN for three nights. It sounded incredible. It wasn’t. I realised when I went down to the bar for a drink before dinner that there were no other guests in the hotel. Weirded out, I decided to get room service. Food arrived and about two minutes later the lights started going on and off. The wind started howling down the deserted corridors, and the tap in the bathroom turned itself on. I was in a horror movie. I never slept a wink. After a terrifying night, I checked out at first light and found an unhaunted hotel.

A LONG WEEKEND WITH R600 CASH

On one work trip, about a decade ago, I found myself in bustling Maputo. It happened to be a public holiday over there, which meant a long weekend. My then-line manager suggested that we visit Inhaca Island. Think remote, pristine shoreline, endless seafood, and no ATMs, nor card facilities. I had little cash, about R600. Who carries cash??? I’m a city girl who swipes. It is an absolute miracle how that R600 paid for lovely accommodation, my meals for that long weekend and trinkets. I can only believe that God’s Hand was residing over me on that day, and sent blessings in abundance where that R600 stretched so far.

Travels and miracles, go hand in hand.

SOCCER INJURY ON HONEYMOON

During my first marriage, we had our 10-day honeymoon in Mauritius. On the second day, being an avid soccer player, I played a game with the locals on the beach. I got tackled so badly, I dislocated my knee. I had to go to a random hospital. So, for the rest of the honeymoon, I was in a cast and had limited movement. Yusuf Moola, Durban

BACKPACKING IN A CARPET TENT

When I was backpacking in India, I ended up on a train with Indian people and they insisted I visit Pushkar. So, after travelling to other parts, I made my way to Pushkar. I got there, and I could not find accommodation. The people said they would help me. I ended up sleeping in a carpet tent. We all slept in a row. It was a cattle festival in town, so the camels were right outside our tent making these horrific noises.

Cheslin TÜRKIYE GETAWAY

HE HELPED THE SPRINGBOKS BAG THE 2023 RUGBY WORLD CUP TITLE AND RECENTLY THE FREEDOM CUP. NOW, AFTER ALL THAT HARD WORK, STORMERS WINGER CHESLIN KOLBE TOOK HIS WIFE, LAYLA, TO ISTANBUL (WITHOUT THE CHILDREN) FOR SOME RELAXATION. IN BETWEEN THE PRIVATE TIME, INBOUND SA CAUGHT UP WITH HIM.

Türkiye has rapidly become one of the most sought-after destinations for South African travellers. Known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes, it consistently captures the hearts of those who visit. One of the biggest draws is the ease of travel for South Africans, with a free e-visa that allows multiple entries and is valid for 180 days from the date of issue.

With over 60 000 South Africans visiting each year, more are eager to explore Türkiye’s iconic landmarks, immerse themselves in its unique traditions, and indulge in the delicious cuisine.

Once a well-kept secret, Türkiye is now a hotspot for those looking for a mix of history, adventure and luxury. Here are some of Cheslin’s top travel tips for making the most of your Turkish getaway.

As a world-class athlete, how do you maintain your fitness and training routine while travelling, especially during vacations?

I don’t have a set routine with my training when

going on holidays because good rest is also part of being mentally fresh. I will still do my training but depends on how I feel either early morning (as I prefer), or late at night, but I always try and fit in training sessions wherever I go.

Rugby has taken you around the world. How do you think travelling to different countries has shaped your perspective as an athlete?

It has allowed me to learn about new cultures and how every country approaches things differently, requiring you to adapt as an individual. This experience makes me appreciate home even more.

It has also broadened my perspective, helping me understand other teams, their backgrounds, and how their upbringing influences the way they live. In turn, this has shaped my own personal growth.

How do you balance recovery and relaxation with exploring a new destination, especially after such a demanding rugby season?

I always plan out the number of days I have in each country, making the most of my time by seeing as many attractions as possible. I also make sure to set aside a day or two to relax, swim, or enjoy a massage. Whenever I’m on a break, I make booking a spa treatment an essential part of my travel experience.

As someone who plays rugby at the highest level, do you find travel to be a form of mental relaxation and reset?

Being on a flight gives you the chance to rest before reaching your destination, especially if you’re traveling for a match — and even more so in Business Class. For holidays, you can completely switch off, enjoying both the anticipation of a break and the mental reset that comes with it.

How do you balance your individual interests when exploring new destinations with Layla?

We each make a list of places we’d like to visit and combine them to create a shared bucket list. We focus on aligning our similar interests and ticking off those experiences together. Our goal is to do as much as possible with the time we have.

What aspects of Turkish culture or history are you most excited to explore during your trip?

The cuisine, sightseeing and the actual ice-cream truck experience.

What’s your favourite airline & why?

Turkish Airlines stands out not only for its toptier Business Class but also for its incredible free TourIstanbul service available to South Africans. TourIstanbul offers a complimentary layover tour for anyone with a 6–24-hour stopover in Istanbul, allowing passengers to explore historical attractions and dine at some of the city’s best restaurants.

Five

fun facts about Cheslin:

1. He once had to run away from a gunfight between rival gangs in Kraaifontein when he was a child.

2. His father was also a very good rugby player but was denied any opportunity to make a career out of it due to apartheid.

3. His cousin, Wayde van Niekerk, won the gold medal in the 400m at the 2016 Olympics and set a world record that stands to this day.

4. Rassie Erasmus fought to change the Springbok policy against picking foreignbased players so he could select Cheslin Kolbe.

5. Kolbe’s first international try was a late intercept to help the Springboks to a thrilling 36-34 win over arch-rivals New Zealand in the Rugby Championship. IB (Reference: Boksquad.co.za)

MY MOST MEMORABLE

BIRTHDAY

CELEBRATORY MODE? YES! INBOUND SA CELEBRATES ITS FIRST BIRTHDAY THIS NOVEMBER! TO MARK THE OCCASION, WE HAVE ASKED A FEW CELEBRITIES TO SHARE THEIR MOST UNFORGETTABLE BIRTHDAY MEMORIES. HERE’S WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY…

Smash Afrika Mdutyulwa a.k.a

Kaya Similo Mdutlulwa (TV & Radio Personality, Actor, Podcaster)

My most memorable birthday was in 2016 –my first surprise party! I’m generally not big on birthdays, but my then-girlfriend made it extra special. Even though I’m a TV personality, I don’t enjoy the attention that comes with birthdays. Let me take you back to 31 October 2016... On that day, I was returning from an out-of-town event and felt quite tired. All I wanted was to shower and sleep. But to my surprise, when I opened the front door, my friends appeared out of nowhere and yelled, “Surprise!” To this day, I’ll never forget how loved, appreciated, and happy I felt. It was the best feeling in the world. I almost cried but laughed instead. We braaied, laughed, drank, and celebrated the evening in her cosy garden.

Verona Pillay (Gospel Singer & Worshipper, Crown Gospel Awards Best Female Nominee)

My most cherished birthday was when my parents flew from Durban to Johannesburg just to surprise me. It was their final gift to me, as both passed away the following year, only two months apart. I still see my mom, gently pushing my dad in his wheelchair through the airport, both determined to make my day unforgettable. It’s a memory etched in my heart forever. I often wish heaven were just a flight away.

Karabo Ntshweng (Radio Presenter, former YOTV presenter)

My most memorable birthday was definitely my 30th. We had just come out of lockdown, and we were finally able to travel again. My family and I packed our bags and jetted off to Cape Town, where we stayed in an amazing villa near the beach. The views were beautiful, and the company was even better.

I wasn’t prepared for what came next, though. On the day of my birthday, I got ready for what I thought was a birthday lunch, but it turned out to be a proposal. My boyfriend at the time proposed to me at a gorgeous wine farm with my family present. It was the most incredible moment. The sun was setting, I had champagne in hand, and everything felt perfect – my favourite city, with my favourite people, about to marry the love of my life. It was truly an amazing and unforgettable birthday experience.

Aaron Masemola (Multi Award Winning TV & Radio Presenter)

My most memorable birthday celebration was this year when I celebrated my 28th birthday. Coming from a family where we didn’t celebrate our birthdays, this year I decided to go all out for my birthday on the 10th of January. Being a DJ, I organised my own birthday event and invited all my friends.

Most of my followers don’t know that I am an amateur boxer.

I wouldn’t call it a failure, but being retrenched from my Sales Admin Analyst position turned out to be a blessing. I was always afraid to leave a job that made me miserable, fearing I wouldn’t be able to survive. However, I’m grateful that my content creation is thriving and has now become my full-time career.

1. What’s a surprising fact about you that most of your followers don’t know?

It might not be a surprise, but the most common comment I receive when I meet someone is, “I didn’t realise you’re so tall!” At 1.78m, I think many people assume I’m much shorter.

2. What’s one lesson you’ve learned from a failure that ended up benefitting you in the long run?

For me, it’s all about embracing the opportunity to try rather than living in a “what if” mindset. I’m a go-getter at heart, always striving to achieve my goals.

3. What’s your go-to outfit for a lazy day?

LEGGINGS! I love leggings paired with basically anything. I dress it up and down and the stretch is super comfy for me to be me.

4. What’s the most unusual item on your bucket list?

Earlier this year, I was blessed to take my dad on his dream vacation. While on this trip, I mentioned to my husband that I felt strange not having a bucket list, as I didn’t have anything I considered a lifelong dream. He then said to me, “It’s because you’ve always set goals and reached them, so you’re living out most of your dreams, and that’s okay.” This hit home for me. But if I had to answer, I’d say a trip to Milan with my daughter, whose name is also Milan, has become my next goal.

1. What’s a surprising fact about you that most of your followers don’t know?

I’m not sure how many of my followers know this, but I’m Portuguese! Growing up with traditional Portuguese grandparents was amazing - their cooking was always insane! They encouraged me to try new dishes and flavours, and now I’m obsessed with food. My grandparents’ kitchen was like a taste explosion, and it’s had a lasting impact on my love for food and Portuguese culture.

2. What’s one lesson you’ve learned from a failure that ended up benefitting you in the long run?

I don’t see setbacks as failures. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and if something doesn’t work out, it’s because something better is waiting. Rather than looking back, I’m focusing on the future and what I still want to achieve. I’m taking a “what’s next?” approach, and I’m excited to see where my hard work and determination take me.

3. What’s your go-to outfit for a lazy day?

My go-to outfit for a lazy day would definitely be something baggy. So, a loose-fitted or oversized T-shirt and either sweatpants or comfortable shorts.

4. What’s the most unusual item on your bucket list?

The most random thing on my bucket list would be that I want to live past 100 years of age. I love life - I want to live forever!

Due to my content being primarily beauty, majority of my followers don’t know that I am vegetarian and a HUGE animal lover. I have been a vegetarian for six years now due to my wholehearted love for animals. If I could be a farm girl…I would be one.

2. What’s one lesson you’ve learned from a failure that ended up benefitting you in the long run?

My whole life, I have been judged, excluded and made fun of for being “different” which made me grow up with a sense of internal conflict. I started dying my white eyelashes and eyebrows so that they wouldn’t stick out in comparison to everyone around me. The need to change myself didn’t stop there. I used a self-tanner and even went as far as an injectable pigment. It took me quite a few years to realise that my differences are my advantage as well as a way of representing and uplifting other individuals facing the same challenges created by society and what is perceived as the “norm”. In the long run, my unique traits have made me a stronger person.

3. What’s your go-to outfit for a lazy day?

The perfect lazy day would be spent next to my dog with a book in hand, wearing a comfy tracksuit and fluffy socks.

4. What’s the most unusual item on your bucket list?

I have quite a few unticked quests on my bucket list but the most unusual one is probably visiting and exploring Iceland as it isn’t the usual holiday destination.

art with BREATHING LIFE INTO UNIQUE makeup

IF YOU THINK CREATIVITY HAS REACHED ITS LIMIT, THINK AGAIN! WE HAVE DISCOVERED A 23-YEAR-OLD ARTIST WHOSE WORK IS EXCEPTIONAL. EVER CONSIDERED CREATING ART WITH MAKEUP? NEITHER HAD WE, BUT RICOLLIN MOODLEY PROVES THAT CREATIVITY IS ENDLESS WHEN YOU FOLLOW YOUR OWN PATH.

akeup and art – who knew they could blend so perfectly? How did this idea come about?

I started creating makeup art when I came across some discarded lipsticks and other makeup products in 2023. At the time, I couldn’t afford traditional art supplies, but since I love finding unique ways to express creativity, I decided to give it a try.

Have you always considered yourself incredibly gifted and creative?

Yes, I have always seen myself that way because,

Poverty made me do art.

although I believe I’m an ordinary person, I constantly strive to stand out and be unique.

Which public figures have you incorporated into your drawings, and has your work been celebrated?

I’ve created lipstick paintings of several notable figures, including Springbok Captain Siya Kolisi, Rachel Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Cheslin Kolbe, Damian Willemse, Trevor Nyakane, Handré, Marise Pollard, Springbok Coach Dr. Rassie Erasmus, Grammy Award winner Tyla, Uncle Waffles, and the late Connie Chiume. Most recently, I painted UFC Middleweight Champion Dricus du Plessis along with his match escorts, as well as Eben Etzebeth alongside Siya Kolisi.

I believe my work has been celebrated and

continues to gain recognition. People share my art, tagging celebrities, and some of these stars have commented on my work and even followed me.

What legacy do you want to paint and leave behind?

Poverty shouldn’t prevent you from using your talents and gifts to achieve your goals; instead, let it inspire your creativity along the way.

Are there any artists you look up to who have inspired your creative journey?

I’m inspired by my humble background and the struggles my family has faced. My drive to help my parents put food on the table is what pushed me into art. Poverty led me to creativity, and that has been my motivation from day one. I’m completely self-taught, and everything I’ve learned artistically, I’ve picked up along the way, which is what makes my work unique.

How far do you want to go with your craft?

I want to go as high and as far as I can – growing enough to showcase my artwork around the world. I aspire to be known for my creativity and my determination to never give up and keep pushing forward. IB

TEMBA BAVUMA GIVEN A CHANCE FOR CHANGE OF DIRECTION

However, it is a momentous occasion – not just for the individual chosen but for the entire team, the nation, and the broader sports community. GET YOUR HANDS ON Zapiro’s Springbok-inspired tees

ZAPIRO, THE LEGENDARY CARTOONIST WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE, HAS TEAMED UP WITH PICK N PAY CLOTHING FOR SOMETHING REALLY SPECIAL – A COLLECTION OF T-SHIRTS THAT CELEBRATES THE SPRINGBOKS’ AMAZING ACHIEVEMENTS ON THE RUGBY FIELD.

With the team’s winning streak inspiring the nation, Zapiro (aka Jonathan Shapiro) handpicked five of his all-time favourite designs for these limited-edition tees. And the timing couldn’t be better – they’re launching just in time for the first anniversary of SA’s 2023 Rugby World Cup victory! One design that’s sure to be a fan favourite? “Green is the New Black,”.

What inspired this particular collaboration with Pick n Pay?

When Pick n Pay reached out, we started brainstorming some of my rugby cartoons. Then, as we beat the All Blacks again, I thought, wow, we’ve got something special going on. I heard someone say, “green is the new black” on the radio, and I thought that would be a great hook for a cartoon celebrating our success.

How do you feel about what you’ve achieved with this project?

I’m thrilled! It’s not often I get to be part of something that’s all about unity and celebration. There’s a real sense of genuineness in this project, and it’s fantastic to contribute to something that lifts people up and celebrates our diverse nation through the lens of rugby.

How do you feel freedom of expression and speech has evolved over the years?

It’s been quite a journey! I started doodling in the late ‘70s, and back then, it was really tough. I remember sourcing banned images of Madiba for

student posters! I officially got into cartooning for the United Democratic Front (UDF) in 1983, and my very first piece was banned by the government. It was a rough time; many cartoons I created were banned too. But things began to change after the new constitution was introduced in the mid- ‘90s. As a cartoonist now, I have so much more freedom, especially with strong media backing.

Did you ever expect to reach such great heights when you started?

Honestly, no! I think it’s hard for anyone to predict their trajectory. I did see myself heading in this direction back in the early ‘80s, but I never imagined we’d see freedom so soon. The unbannings took many of us by surprise. It’s wild that I ended up in the thick of it during the ‘90s and got to meet Madiba. But the most surprising thing was becoming critical of a government I once supported. Now, this celebration of rugby is a nice change from my usual political critiques, and it feels refreshing to be part of something positive! IB

MANCOSA’s

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR TODAY’S SKILLS GAPS

YOU HAVE PROBABLY HEARD THE WORD DISRUPTION SEVERAL TIMES WHEN PEOPLE DESCRIBE THE CURRENT BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT, AND THE SKILLS NEEDED TO EXCEL. BUT WHAT DOES THIS ACTUALLY MEAN? HOW IS THIS DISRUPTION BEING MANIFESTED? WHAT KEY SKILL SETS WILL YOU NEED TO BECOME AN ASSET TO YOUR EMPLOYER?

The changing nature of the workforce

Statistics featured in an article on muchskills.com contextualise the disruption buzz phrase perfectly. The article highlights a pressing need for reskilling, indicating that more than one billion people will require new skills by 2030 due to technologydriven changes in the workplace. Currently, 58% of the workforce must acquire additional skills to perform their jobs effectively. Since 2015, the skill sets required for various employment opportunities have shifted by approximately 25%, and this figure is projected to double by 2027.

Despite this urgent need, organisations are largely unprepared to address skills shortages. Globally, 75% of companies report difficulties finding skilled workers, and between 20% and 30% of critical roles in many organisations are not filled by the most qualified individuals.

A need for skills development and upskilling

As the country’s leading provider of distance learning, MANCOSA is at the forefront of skills development and upskilling. The

institution offers a diverse range of programmes for students looking to enhance their skill sets and advance their careers.

In addition to its student offerings, MANCOSA provides several business-to-business (B2B) solutions designed to encourage mentorship and skills development training. These initiatives aim to equip businesses with the tools needed to navigate disruptions and adapt to emerging challenges effectively.

MANCOSA has launched its enhanced B2B Training Solution to accommodate this rapid development. The product suite gives businesses the choice and flexibility to meet their particular business demands. This includes accredited formal learning programmes, online short learning programmes, and customised short learning programmes.

The institution’s wide range of online short learning programmes is delivered through a futuristic online learning platform called SkillME. The platform combines MANCOSA’s 27 years of developing worldclass human talent into an online future-fit experience to fast-track

employability within the modern workplace.

Students have access to expert guidance

We have always prided ourselves on the fact that MANCOSA graduates are highly sought after and employable because of the transferable skill set associated with distance-based education. Additionally, graduates have access to the Honoris Career Centre, where they receive expert advice on how to grow their careers.

Our programmes are crafted to respond to the dynamic world of work. They prepare our students for the current and future world of work and provide them with skills that will equip them for the evolving macro environment.

As you can see, skills development can no longer be put on the back burner. MANCOSA is perfectly positioned to be your partner in growing this skill set.

Born and raised in Johannesburg, she now lives in Cape Town with her husband Richard, who is also a commercial pilot. Before her aviation career, she spent nearly two years on golf courses and says, “I would probably have gone pro, but my career took me in a different direction.” Carlse

Nicole also performed as one of the opening artists for Australian singer Jamie Fine during both her South African music tours.

“Music is a way to empower yourself and to set yourself free of your past experiences so that you can be fully present.” The singer will release a new single on 20 October 2024, ‘Angels’ short on the heels of ‘How do I say goodbye’. Some of her singles include – ‘Dim the Lights’ and ‘Fake it till you make it’

FIVE TIPS FOR chic street style FASHION

EMBRACING VIBRANT COLOURS CAN EXPRESS YOUR MOOD, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU MIX TEXTURES FOR LAYERED LOOKS, SO DON’T SHY AWAY FROM BOLD DETAILS. ELEVATE YOUR STREET STYLE WITH THESE FIVE FASHION TIPS!

01 Colourful

There is nothing like the power of colour in the world of fashion. It carries meaning, sets the mood, and transforms your vibe in an instant. Now, imagine wearing a garment bursting with vibrant colours. Step out with a bold touch of yellow to showcase your energy or a splash of orange to radiate optimism, happiness and enthusiasm.

02 Style

This is where creativity flourishes, and fashion lovers are free to unleash their imagination. No rules, no limits – it is all about personal expression. Sometimes, you will see someone turn a simple shirt into a skirt or layer a skirt in unexpected ways. Ultimately, the fashion game is all about the one behind the clothes – the true fashionista.

03 Mixed textures

Have fun experimenting with a mix of different fabrics to create a fashion statement you love from your wardrobe. This approach balances the weight and flow of materials while allowing for creative layering. Imagine a silky dress with a cotton top underneath, maybe with a bit of lace at the hem. Dress it up, and you’ll be using the cotton top as a cover-up if the sun gets a bit too intense.

04 Let your fashion details shine

Don’t be afraid to play with details that show confidence and boldness! It could be those eyecatching stitches on your jeans that add a unique touch or how you tie your top across your body with a cute knot in the back. Even how you style the strings hanging off your shirt can make a difference.

05 Accessories

You know what they say: accessories can make or break a street-

style outfit! They add that special touch and can make a bold statement. Think about it – while sunglasses are great for keeping the sun out of your eyes, they also amp up your look. And that cute hat you wear to shield yourself from the sun? Or that handbag that perfectly matches your shoes? They all come together to bring out the best in your style! IB

LIKE A

BUILDING baddie

WE ALL KNOW THAT BUILDING LASTING HABITS IS A LONG-TERM COMMITMENT. IT TAKES TIME, EFFORT, AND CONSISTENCY TO SEE RESULTS. BUT WITH JUST ONE MONTH OF DEDICATION, YOU’RE GUARANTEED TO FEEL THE DIFFERENCE.

As a health coach, I implement a few effective tools with my clients that are enough to incorporate into any lifestyle. If we start something that feels overwhelming, causes stress, or doesn’t fit into our routine, it becomes difficult to maintain. However, if we begin with a few basics and make them second nature, progress becomes unstoppable!

It’s all about you!

The first and most important priority of your day should be yourself! Start your day by setting the tone with 30 minutes of “you time”. This can involve preparation for the day, nourishing your body, hydrating, moving, taking a walk, meditating, praying, grounding and practicing breathwork, etc. When your first focus is on yourself right after you rise, you set yourself up for success.

Rest and recovery are the single most transformational forms of revitalisation HABITS

Eliminate toxicity!

Health is wealth

You can choose any healthy habit that you enjoy and that fits easily into your daily lifestyle. Any kind of movement is beneficial regularly, and the style or intensity of the movement is not important. A fit person who takes care of their body automatically gains an advantage when walking into a room because people tend to take that type of person more seriously!

Selfcare boo…

Nothing feels better than taking time to invest in activities that boost your self-esteem. Instead of spending money every weekend on excessive drinking, lavish dinners, or unnecessary outings, prioritise self-care. Focus on activities that enhance your physical well-being, improve your mental health, and uplift your overall mood.

And I mean all forms of toxicity – people, baggage, places, unhealthy habits, etc. Identify the things that weigh you down or bring negativity into your life, then phase them out. We cannot thrive if we are in survival mode; mindset and emotions play a huge role in this. For many, carrying dead weight becomes so normal that we eventually don’t even realise it’s there.

The game changer: sleep

I wish this were a more widely spoken-about topic, that getting more sleep would trend, or that sleep health received as much focus as other aspects of health. Rest and recovery are the single most transformational forms of revitalisation, healing, regeneration, and anti-aging measures. Please invest in eight hours of sleep each night.

People who consistently implement these five basic baddies have elevated in every way. They start to look and feel better daily, while others notice visible improvements. IB

DON’T LET allergies DERAIL YOU

SPRINGTIME IS KNOWN FOR INCREASED POLLEN LEVELS, WHICH CAN TRIGGER ALLERGIC REACTIONS IN MANY PEOPLE.

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a common allergy that causes sneezing, itchy eyes, a runny nose and congestion. It is often triggered by pollen, grass, dust or mould.

Allergic rhinitis not only causes significant discomfort but also a reduction in quality of life. In addition to this, its complications can be severe; these include asthma exacerbations, sinusitis, ear infections, and reduced quality of sleep. In children, reduced sleep quality can lead to learning difficulties at school due to chronic fatigue.

Treatment options

Avoid known triggers

• House dust mites: replacing carpets with wooden floors or tiles, regular vacuuming with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, and removing soft toys from the bedroom.

• Mould: ensure adequate ventilation and clean mould-infested areas with bleach.

• Outdoor allergens like pollen: wearing a mask and avoiding outdoor activities during peak pollen periods. For more information on monitoring pollen count, you can visit https:// pollencount.co.za/report/ for weekly reports on pollen count in your area, allowing you to take the necessary precautions.

Nasal steroid sprays

This is the best treatment for allergic rhinitis. These nasal steroid sprays are great as they work directly on the nasal passages by reducing inflammation and swelling. They must be used daily as they take a few days to work and cannot be used occasionally for symptom relief. It’s also essential that they are used correctly; for a step-by-step guide on how to use nasal sprays, you can go to https://www.allergyfoundation.co.za/allergyinformation/learn-how-to/nasal-spray-andwashouts.

Oral antihistamine syrups or tablets

The non-drowsy antihistamines like cetirizine, loratadine, or fexofenadine are preferred, and these assist by blocking the effects of histamine in the body. Histamine is responsible for the allergic response in our bodies. When we block the effects of histamine, we decrease the symptoms of allergic reactions.

Nasal decongestant sprays

Nasal decongestant sprays are great for managing congestion in the short term. However, they cannot be used for more than three to five days at a time as they can cause rebound congestion and worsen the situation (oxymetazoline, e.g. Iliadin).

Saline rinses

These are great for children and adults as they assist with removing irritants and clearing mucous buildup from the nasal cavity.

Allergen immunotherapy

This is reserved for patients who have failed all the above treatment options while avoiding all possible allergy triggers. Treatment is conducted by an allergy specialist and involves introducing the body to the trigger allergen over time (two to three years), thus tricking the body into becoming resistant to that particular allergen.

Allergic rhinitis affects 10-40% of children and adults worldwide and, if left untreated, can significantly impact your quality of life. People with allergies need to take precautions during these seasonal months, such as staying indoors on high pollen days, keeping windows closed, using air purifiers, and working together with their healthcare provider to develop a personalised treatment plan to enjoy a better quality of life. IB

KuraFlo® – so much more than Seasonal

Hay fever, allergies, dry coughs, asthma… these are the conditions that are most experienced during Spring and Summer seasons. Because of the heat and humidity, there is a lack of air movement which can cause pollutants like dust and pollen to be trapped in the airways. And although flu is prevalent in cold weather, we are also still susceptible to flu because of sudden temperature changes in Summer when we move from air-conditioned rooms to outdoor heat, or sudden rainstorms.

With a higher salt quantity in the product than that of the body, hypertonic saline draws fluid from the inflamed, swollen lining of the nose, sinuses, larynx and bronchi to help open the airways. This then helps wash out those trapped particles.

In addition, we have also launched our new anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic Skin Healing Cream to help for those skin irritations, rashes, mosquito bites, cuts and sunburn.

MADELAIN ROSCHER’S JOURNEY FROM PERSONAL ASSISTANT TO CEO IS MARKED BY A DEDICATION TO HARD WORK AND A COMMITMENT TO NURTURING TALENT, ENSURING THAT PR WORX DELIVERS EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE AND RESULTS.

What was your first job and what did you earn?

In 1999, I was personal assistant in the marketing department at Ster-Kinekor. I earned R1,200 per month. While it may not have been much, it was a valuable learning experience that laid the foundation for my career in marketing communications. That modest salary taught me the importance of hard work, perseverance, and the drive to constantly improve.

How did you start/get the job as CEO of PR Worx?

After my time at Ster-Kinekor, I moved on to work at Imperial and then joined PwC as their national PR Manager. Eventually, I took on the role of Global Head of Marketing Communications at South African Airways, where I was also the airline’s spokesperson. I made the decision to start my own consulting business, allowing me the flexibility to work from home and spend more time with my children. My departure from SAA received significant media attention, and as a result, Comair — the owners of kulula.com and the local rights to British Airways — approached me with an opportunity to manage their media relations. They became my first client, and from there, things took off.

What is PR Worx’s biggest strength?

PR Worx’s biggest strength lies in our ability

to consistently deliver impactful, results-driven strategies tailored to each client’s unique needs.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as CEO?

This would be balancing the personal investment I have in each client’s business while continuously finding the right talent to support our growth. I take my work very personally, treating every client’s business as if it were my own, which means I set high standards for both myself and my team.

What makes you get up in the morning to go to work?

What gets me up in the morning is my deep passion for making a difference — not just in my teams and clients’ lives but also across the African continent.

What characteristics of employees attributes to the success of PR Worx?

The success of PR Worx is driven by a combination of several key employee attributes: Dedication and Passion, Creativity and Innovation, Adaptability and Resilience, Integrity and Accountability and Collaboration and Honest Communication.

What is your goal for the company?

My goal for PR Worx is to continue growing as a leading marketing-communications agency, not only locally but also regionally across Africa. IB

Laid off at work?

THIS IS HOW YOU MANAGE YOUR FINANCES

LAYOFFS CAN BE A DAUNTING EXPERIENCE FOR THOSE AFFECTED. WHETHER AT STARTUPS OR MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES, MANY ORGANISATIONS GO THROUGH PERIODS OF RETRENCHMENT AND RESTRUCTURING, OFTEN LEAVING EMPLOYEES UNEMPLOYED WITHOUT WARNING. DURING SUCH TIMES, IT’S IMPORTANT TO HAVE A PLAN TO STRETCH AND MANAGE YOUR FINANCES EFFECTIVELY.

ayment plan for loan

PMost of us working in corporations have loan obligations, whether mortgages or personal loans, and it’s essential to ensure that we do not default on our repayments. During a layoff period, communicate with your bank about your situation and propose a payment plan with reduced monthly payments. While this may extend your loan term, it can help the bank assist you during this difficult time. Taking these steps can protect your home and safeguard your credit score until you’re back on your feet.

Pension fund

While you can’t contribute to your pension, consider transferring your money into a preservation fund. This way, your investment can continue to grow, and the transfer is taxfree. It’s best to avoid cashing out your pension fund, as doing so may affect your future benefits. Withdrawals should only be made in dire circumstances.

Side hustle

Life has become increasingly expensive, and as the saying goes, one source of income is often not enough to make ends meet, even for those who are employed. To boost your cash flow, find something you’re passionate about and explore ways to monetise it. Consider planning for side hustles that can provide support when you’re between jobs.

Cut down expenses

Layoff at work means cashflow will be reduced significantly and that means cutting down on unnecessary spending like eating out and weekend activities. This can help with stretching your current savings. You might even consider downgrading the model of your vehicle or renting a cheaper place.

Online course and updating CV

Enrol in free online short courses that will keep your skills updated, and update your CV so that you are marketable. This will save you some Rands and put you in an advantageous position to get a better-paying job.

Take care of your mental health

Although this is a difficult time, it’s important to prioritise your mental health by engaging in activities you enjoy. Stay positive – this is just a season, and seasons always change. IB

Almost exactly a year ago, I had a dream (or a vision) that woke me in the early hours of the morning about a concept for a monthly publication aimed at discerning business and leisure travellers.

My mind was racing with ideas and I have never been that excited to get to the office to share this “vision” with the Media Xpose Team. We brainstormed, and within a month, InBound SA was officially birthed.

It’s been a truly extraordinary journey, but our perseverance and dedication have led to significant growth over the past year. We have featured outstanding profiles of celebrities, businesspeople, artists, designers, and more. I can confidently say that InBound SA has shown us once again that print is a powerful medium. Through the magazine, we connect with readers and offer a distraction-free reading experience, especially for those seeking downtime during flights, layovers or in hotel rooms.

Our growth is attributed to all stakeholders, and I extend my gratitude to our advertisers and contributors for their confidence in InBound SA magazine. Without your support, we couldn’t have achieved this, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in us, especially the great brands that have partnered with us over the past year.

To our readers, you remain our superstars, and we promise to continue bringing you the latest news, views and interviews! I would like to end with an important message to all: Dream big and have the courage to pursue those dreams. Have a blessed and safe festive season!

EBONY & IVORY: Harmonising Home and Habitat

LIFE NEAR THE CITY MEANS FAMILIES CAN FORGET ABOUT FRESH AIR AND VAST STRETCHES OF VIBRANT GREENERY – OR DOES IT? COUNTRY AND EQUESTRIAN ESTATES LIKE BLUE HILLS IN MIDRAND, ARE CHALLENGING STATEMENTS LIKE THESE QUITE SUCCESSFULLY. HERE, HOMEOWNERS ARE OFFERED THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS: SPACIOUS FREEHOLD STANDS IN THE PEACEFUL COUNTRYSIDE.

Project brief

The client’s brief requested the design of a four-bedroom home nestled within a 5000 m² property, where their two sons could grow up in harmony with nature.

The goal was to create a space inspired by a passion for industrial-style aesthetics and sustainable gardening, integrating a tranquil sanctuary with a vibrant social playground – perfect for large family gatherings and intimate moments.

Subtle details with impact

Sustainability lies at the core of the firm’s design ethos, making it a central theme of the Ebony & Ivory project, showcasing how a home can embody luxury and environmental responsibility. The residence features a range of eco-friendly innovations, including underground rainwater harvesting for garden irrigation and solar panels for electricity generation. The structure is strategically oriented to maximise northern light exposure, ensuring optimal natural lighting and effective temperature control.

By incorporating principles of natural ventilation, the design allows the family to enjoy yearround comfort. Traditional crossventilation techniques alongside stack ventilation were utilised, enabling warm air to rise and escape through higher openings while cooler air flow through lower openings.

The garden includes a thoughtfully curated selection of drought-resistant plants, many of which are indigenous to South Africa. Additionally, an inner courtyard has been designed for the family to transform into a productive vegetable garden, reflecting their passion for homegrown produce.

Windows to the soul

Natural sunlight has no substitute as it brings warmth and soul into every corner, and the Ebony & Ivory residence is a masterclass of this. Unlike artificial lighting, which struggles to capture the essence of a space (genius loci), natural sunlight animates the rooms, emphasising character, and atmosphere.

A standout feature of this project was the design of the windows. The use of narrow strip windows provides fleeting glimpses of the world beyond while expansive glass panes frame the stunning vistas of Blue Hills.

The glass box in the main bedroom immerses the residents further into the natural allure of The Estate, creating an intimate connection with the environment. Inside, window boxes function as stylish shelves for trinkets and books.

The strategic placement of large windows, combined with the building’s optimal orientation, ensures that sunlight permeates deeply into every room.

Added to this, the interplay between transparent glass and dark metal frames creates a captivating contrast, casting playful shadows throughout the interior. This dynamic interaction between light and dark adds further depth and visual delight to every room.

Tiny details offering dramatic effect

Attention to detail, both subtle and bold, defines this residence. While the overall design embraces openness and breeziness, the interiors are thoughtfully embellished with small and minimalistic modern details that pay homage to industrial design and local craftsmanship.

These subtle touches guide the eye from one space to another without overwhelming the senses.

Metal, brick, and wood accented with hints of pastel hues soften the industrial edges and introduce warmth. The custom terrazzo tiles used in the kitchen, add a unique character to this space, combining practicality with a touch of artistic flair. In contrast, the entrance hall and other in-between spaces feature durable, warm vinyl flooring.

Specific colours were chosen for accent walls and custom-designed elements like the builtin cupboards and vanities. By using colour so selectively, these elements become focal points, almost like displayed artworks.

Furthermore, the dominant white palette, used inside and out, amplifies the abundance of natural light, and adds to the property’s sense of spaciousness.

Connecting family and nature

The home embodies the spirit of ‘ubuntu,’ with

its thoughtful balance between communal and private spaces. Large, open volumes transition into more intimate areas, allowing for social gatherings and personal retreats.

A loft space connecting the boys’ rooms encourages sibling bonding, while a corner window in the main bedroom invites shared moments.

The open-plan kitchen, dining, and sitting room, along with stacker doors leading to the patio and pool area, seamlessly connect the entertainment areas to the landscape beyond.

On a more personal note, the home is decorated with the family’s cherished objects. These include art, vintage furniture, heirloom pieces, and handcrafted ceramics that have either been handed down, carrying the weight of family history, or thoughtfully purchased, bringing with them the memory of a precious moment or travel. Every item reflects a connection to the past or a sentiment. Together, they help to turn this house into a home that oozes character and personal significance.

The Ebony & Ivory residence stands as a shining example of how thoughtful architecture can create a living space that is not only beautiful to look at but also sustainable, functional, and deeply connected to its surroundings. It embodies a perfect balance between industrial chic and natural beauty, offering the clients a truly peaceful, yet modern way of life. IB

BRING SPRING INTO YOUR living room with colour

THE SEASON OF REBIRTH, JOY, AND AWAKENING IS UPON US. IT IS A PERFECT TIME TO FRESHEN UP OUR SPACES AND ADD A FEELING OF TRUE HAPPINESS TO OUR HOMES IN TIME FOR THE WARM, SUNNY DAYS.

The living room is the heart of the home, a place where family and friends gather and the first room visitors see. Therefore, it should radiate warmth and hospitality and leave us with a feeling of optimism, pride, imagination, and creative energy. Dulux’s Colour of the Year,

True Joy™, and three easy-to-use palettes will allow you to create exciting and energising schemes for your living room.

“The Dulux Colour of the Year 2025, True Joy™ is the perfect living room paint. It works beautifully on its own, adding optimism and warmth to

any living room, but can also brighten up any space when used as a spontaneous accent colour”, says Palesa Ramaisa, Dulux Colour Expert.

To enhance the vibrant colours that bring joy to your space and a smile to your face, we’ve curated three decorative paint collections: Bold Colour Story, Human Colour Story, and Proud Colour Story. These collections invite you to experiment and play, discovering what feels just right for you.

Here are some tips on how you can energise your living space by simply choosing one of the colour palettes.

• Make a joyful leap into the unknown: Create an adventurous space that feels active and exciting with the bright and zestful colours framed by True Joy™. The Bold Colour Story brings spontaneity and energy to a space. Add coloured furnishings and accessories to a light neutral base to create a space that takes us out of our comfort zone. A large living room can be made to feel active and exciting, with an uplifting orange statement wall framed by True Joy™.

• Celebrate the hand-made: Create an artisan-inspired space that makes you feel grounded and in touch. The earthy tones of the Human Colour Story create the perfect backdrop for True Joy™ bringing a natural glow of sunshine to an open-plan living area. Hand-crafted furnishings made from natural materials connect us to the beauty

of imperfections and create a unique look and feel that is aesthetically pleasing.

• Embrace your local culture: To make a room feel personal, create an eclectic space layered with individual influences that leave you feeling proud of your roots and heritage. Inspired by local cultures from around the world, the Proud Colour Story allows you to celebrate the rich heritages. From natural dyes and pigments to spices, each colour allows us to feel rooted in our identities in a place where anyone can feel at home. These colours from the Proud Colour Story create a living room that feels warm and cosy.

• Incorporate vibrant colours: Add an element of vibrancy into your space with a pop of colour that will make it stand out and create a sense of happiness. True Joy works perfectly as an energising accent colour and can also be used as a bold feature wall to energise even the biggest of spaces.

“We hope you will be inspired to leap and break free from your comfort zone and create a space that feels active and exciting, that brings natural sunlight into your life, or that allows you to reflect and celebrate our diverse cultures,’’ concludes Ramaisa. IB

VERSATILE BY

Design

THE LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT EMBRACES FAMILY LIFE BETTER THAN MOST OTHER SUV’S. BUT IT’S THE VERSATILITY AND CAPABILITY OF THIS 4X4 THAT MAKES IT THE IDEAL PARTNER WHEN YOU WANT TO EMBRACE THE ROAD TO FREEDOM- AND TAKE THE WHOLE FAMILY WITH.

o me, the Land Rover Discovery Sport is the unsung hero in the Land Rover family. Which is quite surprising because it’s probably the most versatile, easy to use, and efficient model in the range. Plus, it’s seriously good fun off-road.

Every time I test drive the ‘Sport’, I get the feeling that this is more than enough SUV for most people, and it’s hard to justify getting anything bigger. It fits an entire family comfortably, and in 5 seat formation, the load bay is seriously cavernous.

But to just talk about space does the Discovery Sport a massive disservice. Because its real party trick is the

incredible versatility and go-anywhere attitude that punches way above its weight-class. Spend some time in the beautifully appointed interior and you start to understand the big idea behind this vehicle.

The Discovery Sport makes the challenge of family life effortless. It gets on with the job without drama, making small trips efficiently and long adventures in comfort. And it always seems to want to give more than you expect. A perfect example of this was a recent trip into the mountains after some seasonal heavy rains. Not once did the Discovery Sport falter, even when the conditions became less than ideal,

“The Discovery Sport is 100% pure Land Rover DNA. So it’s ready for anything, and makes a habit of surprising you daily.”

all the while returning figures of 6.1l /100kms in a vehicle that was packed with luggage for 4 and boxes of books for a local school.

Over the years, especially in the automotive sector, you get the feeling that buyers are looking for mobility solutions that are free from excess and unnecessary functionality. I won’t go as far to use the word downsizing, but maybe modesty. The Discovery Sport is the kind of vehicle that doesn’t make a fuss. It’s happy to quietly get along with the job, yet has all the technology, conveniences (like the sublime Meridian Sound System) and capability you’d expect from the green oval. It’s the unsung hero that never seems to disappoint.

The more time I spend in the Discovery Sport, the more of an advocate I become. I’m constantly telling people to take it for a test drive with their entire family, because every person is well considered here.

If anything, this is the reason why the Discovery Sport has done so well in local and international markets. It caters for the adventurer, the rugby mom, the businessman and the family who enjoys the long December road trips. It’s the reliable, efficient and versatile member of the family that never lets you down.

The Discovery Sport D200 Dynamic HSE is available from Land Rover Constantiaberg from R1 419 700.

Name: Connell Cruise

Place of birth: Johannesburg

In which city do you live now: New York, USA

How long have you lived here: Since January 2020

Occupation: Singer, songwriter.

CUSTARD, PLEASE South African

IT WAS DURING LOCKDOWN THAT SA MUSICIAN CONNELL CRUISE AND WIFE SARAH PACKED UP AND MOVED TO NEW YORK. BUT BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU VISIT THEM. THE LIST OF SA SWEETS THAT THEY CRAVE IS LONG.

Why did you move to the USA?

My family and I moved here to follow a career move for my wife who had an opportunity to work for an advertising research company in New York.

How easy was it to pack up and start a new life in another country?

Naturally, it was difficult to leave my family and friends, everything I had known, and the birthplace of our son. But we determined that our home would always be where we were. We now believe that as long as we are together, we’ve got everything we need.

What are the locals like?

Americans are pleasant, welcoming, kind and warm. Interesting. I have enjoyed it tremendously making friends and meeting people from all walks of life. There is an incredible amount of diversity and acceptance.

Do you get along with your neighbours?

Our neighbourhood has lent itself to being a tight

close-knit, welcoming, and warm community with plenty of interactions daily. On Halloween, the whole neighbourhood lights up, for children and adults to socialise. The same with Christmas. Often, our neighbours will rely on each other. When our daughter was born, quite a few of our neighbours stopped by and dropped a card.

What was your first driving experience like in the USA?

When we first moved here, forgetting about right and left, keeping on the right side of the road. Motorists are generally respectful here.

What do you miss the most about SA?

I miss the stars. I miss the wines. Every time I go to a store here and see a South African product, I grab it. Oh, and biltong.

When family or friends visit you, what must they bring with?

At least one bottle of wine, Horlicks, Milo, Jelly Tots, Smarties, and Wine Gums. The only sweets our children are allowed to eat are South African products. The next person to come visit us, must please bring Ultramel custard. Jeez, I miss that. IB

TASTE THE PARADISE OF Seychelles

AN IDYLLIC ARCHIPELAGO IN THE INDIAN OCEAN, EAST OF KENYA AND NORTH OF MADAGASCAR, THE SEYCHELLES IS A TRUE PARADISE. SCATTERED LIKE PRECIOUS STONES ACROSS THE SEA, THESE ISLANDS ARE SO BEAUTIFUL THAT EARLY BRITISH EXPLORERS THOUGHT THEY HAD DISCOVERED THE GARDEN OF EDEN. WITH STUNNING BEACHES, SWAYING PALM TREES, WARM TURQUOISE WATERS, AND VIBRANT MARINE LIFE, MOTHER NATURE WAS GENEROUS WHEN IT CAME TO THIS PARADISE.

Exploring Mahé and Victoria

Mahé, the largest and liveliest of the Seychelles islands, is home to 90% of the population. Here, you can mingle with locals and explore Victoria, one of the world’s smallest capital cities. With just 25,000 residents, Victoria is a charming city where getting lost is nearly impossible. Explore its 18th and 19th-century French and British architecture, visit the vibrant Hindu Temple, or wander through Sir Selwyn-Clarke Market, where you’ll find seafood, tropical fruits, and local souvenirs. Don’t miss the iconic silver-painted colonial clock tower, modeled after Big Ben, which famously didn’t work for its first 96 years!

If the heat becomes too much, retreat to the shady Botanical Gardens, where you can discover some of the 280 plant species, including the endemic Coco de Mer, a cultural icon of the Seychelles. Be sure to visit the pen of giant tortoises and see the spice grove and the resident fruit bats.

For those travellers brave enough, after seeing the fruit bats in the botanical gardens, visit Marie Antoinette Restaurant and try their curried fruit bat. The restaurant’s Creole Menu, a well-guarded family secret, has remained unchanged for 50 years, and aside from fruit bat, boasts some delicious, spice-infused Creole favourites like parrotfish fritters, grilled red snapper in yellow curry sauce, aubergine fritters, chicken curry, tangy mango salad, pumpkin chutney, and bowls of steaming white rice.

Sir Selwyn-Clarke Marke
Morne Blanc in the Morne Seychellois National Park

Four Seasons Resort Seychelles

Afterward, burn off a few calories with a hike up Morne Blanc in the Morne Seychellois National Park. Though steep, the climb rewards you with stunning views of Mahé’s western coast and the endless Indian Ocean.

For a luxurious retreat, the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles on Mahé’s southern peninsula offers villas with private infinity pools, a hilltop spa, and exceptional dining options, all overlooking the serene Petite Anse Bay.

But with 115 islands, you have plenty more to explore. Waldorf Astoria Platté Island, a tiny speck in the Indian Ocean, about 130km south of Mahé, is blissfully isolated. Opulence is everywhere here, from the lavish villas to the amazing restaurants and a wonderful spa. But there is more to this treasure island. The island has a house reef with stingrays, manta rays and small reef sharks. In addition, hundreds of hawksbill turtles nest annually on the island’s beaches, and at the right time of year, guests can witness newly hatched turtles poking their heads out of the sand and making their dizzying race to the water.

It is only a short hop from Platté back to Mahé, the airport and your flight home. But don’t forget to stop at Takamaka Rum for one last taste of the islands. Rum was first brought to the Seychelles by the British Navy around the middle of the sixteenth century, and for years, every family in

the Seychelles had its own unique recipe of herbs and spices that they mixed to make their own rhum arrange. Nowadays, the Takamaka distillery produces an extensive and delicious range of Seychelles rums. Take a tour and savour one final taste of the islands before you have to leave paradise.

NOT TO MISS

La Digue

With a population of approximately 3 000, it is Seychelles’ fourth largest island, lying 43km from the main island of Mahé and 6.5km from the neighbouring island of Praslin. La Digue is home to some of Seychelles’ most iconic beaches, unique pink granite formations, coconut palms, and forest sanctuaries, and it features fine examples of Creole colonial architecture.

The island offers budget-friendly accommodations ranging from hotels to guesthouses. Several excellent restaurants amidst the hustle and bustle, as well as small to mediumsized market-type eateries, can be found along the roads of La Digue.

The best way to explore the island is by bicycle, which is the easiest way to visit the most splendid beaches on the southeast coast: Grand Anse, Petit Anse, Anse Coco, and Anse Caiman. However, swimming during May and November is dangerous in this area.

L’Union Estate is where you will see the remnants of the island’s coconut industry, a traditional copra mill and kiln where coconut flesh is turned into oil, giant land tortoises, and the largest granite boulder in Seychelles.

Activities around the island include fishing, diving, snorkelling, swimming, sailing and cruising, guided walks and trails, spa and wellness retreats, and island hopping by foot or bicycle.

Not to be missed are La Digue’s sunset cruise along the scenic coastline, an island tour by oxcart, the art galleries, and the traditional Seychellois cuisine.

It is the perfect idyllic place for an intimate and romantic beach wedding. IB

STEP INTO Namibia’s UNIQUE BLEND

AS THE WORLD’S TRAVEL ENTHUSIASTS BEGIN TO CIRCLE THEIR DESTINATIONS FOR THE NEXT BIG ADVENTURE, ONE COUNTRY THAT STANDS OUT IN ITS PROMISE OF REMARKABLE LANDSCAPES AND DEEP CULTURAL EXPERIENCES IS NAMIBIA.

This southwestern African nation offers travellers an unforgettable journey where the stars shine bright at night, and the sky serves as a canvas for endless possibilities. Namibia provides a peaceful retreat for those seeking a quiet escape, enriched by a vibrant cultural heritage and a strong commitment to peace and preservation.

Time stands still in this enchanting land, where the rhythmic sounds of nature, the whisper of the wind through the desert sands, and the warmth of the African sun conspire to slow down the pace of life. Whether you’re trekking through the royal dunes of Sossusvlei, exploring the ancient rock art of Twyfelfontein, or simply basking in the golden light of sunset, Namibia’s blend of space, peace, and time is sure to leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated; an experience that prepares you to face the world with renewed strength and good mental health.

The Namibia Tourism Board (NTB), along with tourism stakeholders, ensures the success of the nation’s tourism industry. Their efforts promote the authentic experiences, rich cultural heritage, and natural beauty that Namibia has to offer, making it a crown jewel in the travel landscape.

The enormous expanse of the desert

Picture yourself at the edge of the world’s oldest

desert, where the sky seems to go on forever. The Namib Desert is a dream come true for nature enthusiasts and astronomers alike, boasting some of the clearest and darkest skies you can find. As the sun sets, the towering dunes come alive with shades of orange, pink, and purple, creating a breathtaking view. When night falls, look up at the starry sky and feel the vastness of the universe around you, a humbling reminder of your place in this incredible world.

In ventures such as hot air balloon rides over the Namib Desert or sandboarding down dunes, adventure and serenity intertwine seamlessly. The wilderness of Namibia is home to unique flora and fauna, with the desert-adapted elephants and the iconic quiver tree standing as symbols of nature’s resilience. The experience of exploring this expansive terrain instil a sense of humility and wonder in every traveller, providing an opportunity not only to witness but also to understand and appreciate nature’s splendour.

A peaceful escape

In an increasingly fast-paced and hectic world, Namibia offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle. The gentle whisper of the desert winds, the soothing sounds of nature, and the calming waves of the Atlantic Ocean create a symphony of serenity that accompanies every moment spent in this country. The calmness of the environment invites travellers to unwind

and reconnect with their inner selves, creating a sense of peace that often feels difficult to find in modern life.

Take a leisurely drive through the rolling hills of the Khomas Hochland, where the scenery offers the perfect backdrop for some quiet reflection. Or head to the tranquil shores of Etosha Pan National Park, where you can spot elephants, lions, and an array of birds going about their day. It’s the kind of place where time feels like it slows down, letting you soak up the little joys – whether it’s watching wildlife in their element or catching a sunset you won’t soon forget.

Recognising the need for peace, many local lodges and guesthouses offer wellness retreats that incorporate traditional and all-inclusive practices. In these quiet settings, you can engage in different sessions like guided meditation, and even partake in cultural ceremonies that ground you in the ancient wisdom of the land and its people.

Time: A journey through ancient landscapes

Namibia is not only a land of natural beauty but also rich in history and cultural diversity. Here, ancient rock art sites tell stories that

En-suite tree houses, camping, swimming in the river, shade, grass, wildlife, mokoro safaris, funky ablutions, and so much more…. Reservations: +264 81 202 8200 bookings@ngepicamp.com www.ngepicamp.com

have resonated through centuries. Visiting Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, allows you to marvel at rock engravings created by the San Bushmen, offering glimpses into their way of life that dates back thousands of years. Each painting and petroglyph hold a piece of history, showcasing Namibia’s profound connection to ancestral roots and traditional narratives.

Windhoek, the capital city and Swakopmund, presents a unique blend of modernity and tradition with its charming German colonial architecture and vibrant marketplaces. Life unfolds in lively markets where locals sell handmade crafts, traditional foods, and fabrics, all infused with the spirit of Namibian culture. Engage with local artisans and learn about the stories behind their crafts, enriching your travel experience and providing insight into the country’s cultural tapestry.

The landscapes of Namibia are as diverse as its people. Explore the surreal rock formations of the Spitzkoppe or venture to the Fish River Canyon, one of the largest canyons in the world. Each location tells a story shaped by the elements over millennia, and each journey through these ancient spaces brings a deeper appreciation for time itself.

For those looking to explore this African gem, practical information can ease planning and enhance your experience:

international flights and connections to major cities across Namibia.

RUNNING FOR A WEEK ON A SINGLE CHARGE

WHEN I UNBOXED THE HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 41 MM, THE WHITE LEATHER STRAP IMMEDIATELY CAUGHT MY EYE. THE SLEEK DESIGN AND CLASSIC STRAP GIVE IT AN ELEGANT YET MODERN LOOK THAT I COULDN’T WAIT TO TRY ON.

It’s light and comfortable, and if you happen to forget that you’re wearing it for a few days, it wouldn’t be a problem considering the impressive battery life. Unlike other smartwatches that need daily charging, the Huawei Watch GT 5 runs for over a week on a single charge.

This device is THEE lifestyle accessory, no matter the pace you’re going at. The watch pairs effortlessly with both Android and iOS devices, which is perfect for someone like me who appreciates flexibility with my accessories. And let’s not forget the waterproof design. Whether I’m going for a swim, or caught in the rain, I don’t need to worry about taking it off.

The sleep management feature is another gem. Each morning, I wake up to insights about my sleep patterns, from deep to light sleep. It makes

me more mindful of how I rest and gives me actionable steps to improve my sleep quality. It’s like having a sleep coach on my wrist.

One of the standout features for me is the offline maps. Forget needing a friend when hiking in Cape Town, or a guild when exploring the lush forests in Tzaneen. The device helps you embrace your independence and enjoy more “Me time”.

For women, the cycle calendar is a thoughtful addition. It offers a discreet way to track menstrual cycles, and I find it incredibly useful for logging details and receiving timely reminders. It feels like a little personal assistant in an area that often gets overlooked in other devices.

Overall, the Huawei Watch GT 5 isn’t just a smartwatch – it’s a lifestyle companion, a piece of tech that effortlessly blends into everyday life. IB

A trip to

Fierce, Fun + Fab

Dear Self,

Let’s take a trip back to online dating in 2012. Remember logging in and checking your old-school inbox?

I started chatting with an Afrikaans guy who turned out to be working on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean. He was only on land for three days, and I was lucky enough that on one of those days, he wanted to date me. Being my impulsive Aries self, I went all out: we had beer and burgers, Thai massages, and even went to an indoor shooting range. Quite a mix of activities, right? We had a great 24-hour date before he went back to the rig.

online

before apps dating,

A week later, during a sushi and girls’ night at home, I got an email that made us all scream. It said, “Hey Milou, I know this is forward, but I’ll be working on the rigs until March, and I don’t want to miss the chance to be with you. I’ll be flying overseas next month and then back on the rigs, and the same story for the following months, so I’d like to take you to two countries; one in November and one in January. I’ll pay for everything and you can pick both destinations. What do you think?”

Let me tell you, my girlfriends and I screamed so loudly, I’m sure the neighbours thought something terrible

was happening. I said yes, OF COURSE, and chose tropical countries, OF COURSE, because, why not? A month of bikinis, board shorts, and working on our tans and surfing skills sounds amazing!

This shows that on our first date, I had absolutely no expectations. I let myself be my true, unapologetic self without holding back any part of my personality. I was hanging out with a cool guy, thinking he would leave the next day and I’d never see him again. I allowed myself to be completely genuine, and it surprisingly paid off. It’s funny how magical things can happen when you don’t try too hard.

Little did I know that our second date would be at Cape Town International Airport, where we were heading to Bali, Indonesia, for 30 days of whirlwind romance. It turns out we were very much into each other and fell deeply in love. Wessel and I had many adventures during our two-year relationship.

Takeaway tip: Embrace spontaneity and be your authentic self. When you let go of expectations and enjoy the moment, amazing opportunities can unfold in unexpected ways.

Stay Adventurous, Milou IB

LONG MARCH TO FREEDOM

In Century City, Cape Town, magnificent Table Mountain hangs like a pastel tinted backdrop for the monumental procession of 100 life-size bronze figures, all walking forward but frozen in motion, arms up and outstretched, waiting to greet visitors. This is Long March to Freedom.

A one-of-a-kind exhibition, unique in the world, Long March to Freedom tells a 350-year story of South Africa’s journey to democracy through the lives of the persons vividly depicted in bronze. Some are well known - Nelson and Winnie Mandela, Archbishop Tutu, Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Luthuli, OR Tambo, to name but a few. But there are many more whose stories have been lost over time. It is an immersive and intensely moving experience to connect with the lives of these iconic individuals. From the Khoi leaders of the 1600’s, to proud Xhosa and Zulu Kings, warriors, prophets and clerics, to the men and women who led the liberation movements through the dark years of apartheid in South Africa, the procession is a sweeping proud narrative of South Africa’s diverse history and cultures.

In the words of CEO Dali Tambo, originator of the concept back in 2010, Long March to Freedom is ‘…the world’s greatest exhibition in bronze, and South Africa’s most enticing heritage tourism attraction. A pantheon of 100 life-size bronze sculptures of liberation heroes honours South Africa’s brightest and bravest icons and tells the story of the country’s 350-year journey to freedom and democracy.

At the heart of meaningful tourism experiences lies integrity, depth, culture and heritage. South Africa's cultural and political heritage is one of the country’s most valuable assets. Our struggle was the moral cause of the international community and the greatest solidarity movement of the 20th Century, and it is the duty of the generation that remembers to ensure that those who follow know of the efforts of legions of freedom fighters, know of our journey to democracy, and understand the sacrifices that allow us to have the society we do today.’

Thirteen years on, and with the contributions of many hundreds of artists, artisans, researchers and academics, trainees, administrators, too many to mention, the Directors of Long March to Freedom talk of ensuring the exhibition becomes a must-see heritage attraction for all South Africans and international visitors. Youth involvement is also a focus; the lively schools programme currently sponsors school groups, primarily from less advantaged areas, to visit the exhibition for a morning of fun learning and interaction with the iconic historical individuals.

A visit to Long March to Freedom is one of discovery, reflection and a full range of emotions. But one thing is for sure – you will leave elated, inspired, awed and proud of this amazing history, this amazing country.

Long March to Freedom is developed, owned, and operated by the National Heritage Project Non-Profit Company.
