MEETING THE FIRST LADY
I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO MEET A FIRST LADY. SPECIFICALLY, MELANIA TRUMP BECAUSE OF HER BEAUTY. ALTHOUGH THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED (YET), I DID SPEND A FAIR AMOUNT OF TIME IN A ROOM WITH MICHELLE OBAMA. BUT NOTHING PREPARED ME FOR OUR FIRST LADY – THE POISED DR. TSHEPO MOTSEPE.
Two months ago, I requested to interview our First Lady. Her team was strict. I had to send proposed interview questions, previous high-profile stories and also my biography. After two months, I finally got to sit down with Dr. Motsepe. I found an amazing woman filled with love, respect and an incredible storyteller.
Had it not been for one of her assistants (gently) instructing us to “wrap it up”, this interview would have gone on for hours. Speaking of which, our interview with “The First Lady of Flying” as she is known, Cathy Specific, was, to put it mildly, hilarious. Find out about her plans to sell koeksisters on the streets of New York.
Staying in the USA, its always fun to interview a comedian because its like sitting in a show and laughing out loud. This was the case with our interview with funnyman Trevor Noah who years ago, left SA for a job hosting The Tonight Show. But he remains proudly South African, he tells us.
Our international travel destination is Zambia and locally, I explore why Mpumalanga has officially become my favourite province. Sticking to Mpumalanga, former Witbank resident, singer Moniqe Fiddes packed up her bags and along with her English husband (a former bodyguard of Michael Jackson), decided to move to England. She tells us what she misses about home.
We hope you enjoy this issue.
Till next month, au revoir !

ANSWER: Charlotte Pretorius
That I did not start traveling sooner!
Ma Ma Afrika
Sleeping more than 2 hours at the weekend.

The biggest travel regret and mistake I made in my life, was to go to the United Kingdom. When life in another country doesn’t work out the way a person wants it to, then it is better to come back home. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side…

TRAVEL HORROR STORY
THE BEST LAID PLANS…..
At 18, I embarked on my first solo journey overseas, to the
land of Wurst. My adventure began with a layover at Heathrow, where my luggage was lost. Panic set in, but there was no time to dwell—I had to board my next flight. Being gluten-intolerant, I had carefully planned everything— except updating my meal preference. Trapped at 30,000 feet with nothing but glutenfilled options, I ate cautiously, hoping for the best. I landed in Germany, exhausted and anxious, with no luggage and a growing discomfort in my stomach, wondering how I’d navigate this foreign land alone.
WINE TIME ALL NIGHT
Chloë
Altmann, Cape Town
On an Etihad evening flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Abu Dhabi, I was raising my plastic beaker of red wine to my lips when a lady lurched down the aisle, knocked my elbow and sent red wine all over me, my seat and everything else. She didn’t apologise. My partner got napkins, and we mopped up as best we could, but I had a seat full of wine. Luckily my pants were black, but I had to sit in red wine all the way to AD, then onwards to Madrid. We had a business appointment at The British Council that day, but the apartment wouldn’t let us in till 1pm. We sat in cafes and on benches till, finally, tired and cross, we could get in to change and rush out again, just making it on time!

BIRDS IN THE BUSH
Travelling is not for the faint
hearted, or so I found out. But as many will know, there is nothing better than the open road. A friend and I set out on a journey to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park on the border of Namibia. Now if you take on such a long journey, it’s good to have a co-driver. My friend volunteered to do the first part of the driving, before we stopped to take a break. With Cape Town well behind us, I dozed off. The next moment I heard a loud crash! And there we were in the middle of the bush in the pitch dark, with only the stars for light. Far off the road, two women alone. “What on earth happened?” I asked her. “Well, there were these beautiful birds in the road and I swerved out!” she said.

A SWIFT END TO A DREAM
I travelled to Vienna to see Taylor Swift live. I planned for a year, pouring my heart and savings into it. I told my small kids that I was going to do something important to me. Less than 24 hours before seeing The Eras Tour, the Vienna shows had to be cancelled due to a terror threat. The outpouring of love in Vienna was inspiring. I am forever grateful for the protection of life, but my dream is still alive. I am trying everything, even crowdfunding, to try and see Taylor elsewhere. Maybe dreams can still come true.

Trevor Noah’s LATEST GUILTY PLEASURE
TREVOR NOAH HAS RACKED UP MORE VOYAGER MILES THAN MANY ORDINARY FOLK DUE TO HIS BUSY TOUR SCHEDULE. BUT WHEN HE IS HOME, HE WAKES UP AT 2AM TO INDULGE IN A NEWFOUND GUILTY PLEASURE: LITCHI ICE CREAM, HE ADMITS TO TEMO MPODI IN A RECENT INTERVIEW.
Born and raised in Johannesburg, Trevor Noah has become a world star. Known for his strong opinions on world politics, he has become the voice of many citizens. Trevor is one of the most successful and adored comedians in the world; he was the host of the Emmy Awardwinning “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central for seven years and this month, he launches a new book – “Into the Uncut Glass”.
However, it’s not all serious comedy business for Trevor. Like many of us, he also has a guilty pleasure. Trying to get a peek at what’s in his fridge that he isn’t supposed to be eating, it turns out we are all ice cream lovers! It’s his guilty pleasure. He has a stash of litchi-flavoured ice cream that he is not supposed to be eating. “I find it hard to resist, especially late at night,” he admits. I mean, who hasn’t had that moment of weakness in front of the freezer in the dead of night? Next time you find yourself sneaking a scoop at 2 am, don’t run away. “Just bask in all that ice cream glory and let all your worries off.”
While he lives in the States now, with properties in New York and Los Angeles, he is still very proudly South African. A big favourite of his is the South African bunny chow – a fast food dish consisting of a hollowed-out loaf of white bread filled with curry and a serving of salad on the side. It originated among the Indian South African
population in Durban.
If he had the opportunity to sell bunny chows on the streets of New York, this would be it, he says. “It’s perfect street food—flavourful, filling, and portable. Plus, it’s a unique taste of South African cuisine that I think people in America would love.”
He considers himself a global citizen and he certainly is, but he spends most of his time in the Big Apple, New York City, an urban jungle where dreams are are made of. “I still feel a strong connection to Johannesburg, I was born and raised there, but NYC has a unique energy and diversity that I love,” Trevor explains, confirming what we all know: home will always be home, no matter where life throws you.
Trevor has been hard at work for the last couple of months finishing the last chapters of his latest book. It centres around a young boy who feels misunderstood at home and decides to run away with his toy bear. He retains the “ubuntu” core value that is rooted in South Africa, which embodies the quality of being human and showing humanity to others.
Together, they embark on a magical adventure in an imaginary garden. Along the way, they encounter various challenges that teach them about conflict resolution and the importance of understanding and getting along with others,” he tells us. Something that every person can
I’m passionate about continuing to create meaningful content, whether it’s through books, comedy, or other media.
relate to. A timely book where the importance of seeking harmony and building genuine connections is a vital need irrespective of national identity, culture, colour, norms, values and age.
The message of the book is about the power of empathy and understanding. He adds, “It’s about learning to resolve conflicts peacefully and recognising the value of different perspectives. That even in moments of disagreement, there’s always a way to find common ground and work things out together.” He believes we can truly make the world a better place and be better citizens.
If given R10 million today, he says he would invest it. “The first thing I would do is invest a significant portion in educational initiatives and scholarships for underprivileged children in South Africa. Education has the power to transform lives, and I’d love to contribute to creating more opportunities for young people.” It’s heartwarming to see someone at the top keen to pull his nation up.
There is so much Trevor Noah has already achieved, but are there more goals? “I’m passionate about continuing to create meaningful content, whether it’s through books, comedy, or other media. I also want to expand my philanthropic efforts and make a positive impact in more communities. And, of course, I’m always looking to learn and grow personally and professionally. There’s a lot left to explore and achieve.” IB

STRANGELY sexy fat guy THE
ON ‘DATING #NO FILTER’
BY TEMO MPODI
JASON GOLIATH IS THAT SEXY HOST GUY OF DATING NO FILTER SHOW, COMING ONTO THE SOUTH AFRICAN SCREEN THIS OCTOBER. HE HAS SAID IT HIMSELF AND WE ARE JUST BACKING HIM UP. THE SHOW ORIGINALLY AIRED ON E! IN THE USA, WITH THE AFRICAN VERSION MARKING THE FOURTH INTERNATIONAL ADAPTATION. WE CAUGHT UP WITH JASON AS HE UNFOLDED A FEW POINTERS ABOUT THE SHOW.
You are the host of Dating #No Filter, please fill us in about the show.
This is a completely raw, unfiltered and unscripted show that is about a group of singles sent out on blind dates. I am leading the show, but I was also working hand-in-hand with a group of spectacular South Africans to make the show beautiful and fun. We get to watch these dates as they unfold and make
unfiltered comments. Celebrities, comedians, content creators, actors, and actresses get to comment on these dates. We all know how awkward first dates can be, and we have been given a license of no filter just like James Bond was given a licence to squash people in his movie. It’s a hilarious soft-hearted but hardhitting show. It’s completely unscripted, these are real dates, and the people are ready to find love.
You got us at hilarious! What can viewers expect from the local adaptation of Dating #NoFilter when it premieres on E! Africa this October 13th?
Just know that we’ve got you covered! I am not going to give anything away, just watch and see for yourself. There are crazy things that are going to blow your mind. Some parts had me in stitches for sure. Let me just say, the world is not ready.
We might just be… From the show, what did you pick up about the dating culture in South Africa?
Listen! I am glad I am married okay. It’s risky out there. The dating game has changed, during my time there were no DMs. I realise that It’s never been easier though for people to connect yet difficult for people to truly connect on a deeper level, and the social awkwardness is wild. It’s so complicated I must say,
I am excited about this show, and I love that we are touching a global language - dating
bringing all that in, through this show?
I am there to point out the flaws and I am not even playing at all. I am the king of “I see the future of flops before you even see them yourself.” We really have been given the licence of #Nofilter and I am not even joking with it. You are going to get the raw truth. I am excited about this show, and I love that we are touching a global language - dating - but we are adding our South African spice and aromat to it. Its going to be lekker! It’s also the first time my audience will get to see me in that sphere of no filter.
Did you experience any embarrassing and comical “behind the scenes” moments while shooting?
None. We were so beautifully taken care of. We went on the dates, and the dates are filmed and we get to watch them. The only awkward and slightly embarrassing moments are when you feel for the other person on a date. But from the production point of view, it was perfect.
What would your slogan be if you were the show yourself?
Complicated might sum it all up. People love vibes, fun, laughter and comedy in almost everything, how are you IB
“The strangely sexy fat guy”. That’s it! I have been sticking with this line, and my wife even knows it!
ACathy Specific WANTS TO SELL KOEKSISTERS ON THE STREETS OF NEW YORK
BRENDAN VAN RHYN HAD DREAMS OF BECOMING A DOCTOR BUT DECIDED TO PURSUE HIS TRUE PASSION – THE STAGE. THIS WEEK, WE ASKED HIM TO TAKE OUT HIS ALTER EGO, CATHY SPECIFIC, BETTER KNOWN AS THE FIRST LADY OF FLYING, FOR A FUN INTERVIEW WITH GAVIN PRINS.
s the First Lady of Flying, what has been your most embarrassing moment while travelling?
One singular moment? Impossible! I could write a book about all the things that have happened to me, and that’s just onboard the aircraft. In fact, it would be a New York bestseller! Speaking of the Big Apple, there was this one time I had UB40 in First Class, I was busy with the bar service and we experienced some severe turbulence. Needless to say, I was really the inspiration for their chart-topping hit, Red Red Wine.
If I gave you R1 million, what would you do with the money?
I’d say that’s an Indecent Proposal! It’s not 1993 anymore, you’re lucky if that buys you a garage on the Atlantic Seaboard. Actually, I might give it back and say you forgot your change! Alternatively, I would invest the money to ensure that the interest “keeps me young” and “turns back time”. Like marriage, I don’t believe in growing old gracefully!
What was the last gift someone gave you that you regifted and why?
A smile. To me a smile is the greatest gift you can give someone. It costs nothing and goes a long way. It also uses fewer muscles than frowning!
What South African product/food would you sell on the streets of New York and why?
Myself! I’m sure there are a lot of hostesses who supplement their income on international
layovers. You just have to walk through the crew parking lot and see the variety of vehicles on display- on a flight attendant’s salary? I don’t think so! No seriously, I would sell any chocolate other than Hershey’s - even the Americans don’t rate it. Come to think of it, I’d probably make a killing selling koeksisters!
What advice would you give your previous boss?
What does it help if they don’t take it? I just walked away quietly and became my own boss. There is a lot of power in silence. The only person I answer to now is myself. Period. Finished and klaar.
If you’re stranded on a desert island and you could request one nonessential item, what would it be and why?
A pair of tweezers! No girl wants rogue hairs lurking on her chin or cheek! Besides, I have a feeling I won’t be on that island alone for long... Johnny Depp might drop anchor and ask this gorgeous mermaid for directions!
Name one person (famous or not) you would invite over for dinner and why?
The guy sitting in 1A on last week’s flight to Bloemfontein. Don’t judge, he was dressed in Boerboel Wear and said he loved my safety demonstration. Wait till he sees my rather unorthodox brace position! Failing that, I would love to have dinner with a younger version of myself and gently warn her not to make the same mistakes I did. IB
STEPPING INTO A leading role
IT’S EXCITING WHEN SOMETHING NEW EMERGES WHICH CHALLENGES AND SETS US UP FOR LEARNING, GROWTH AND EXPANSION IN OUR WORK SPHERE. THIS WAS THE CASE FOR DINEO RATSHEDILE, AS SHE TOOK OVER THE LEAD ROLE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE NEW SHOWMAX DRAMA SERIES LAW, LOVE & BETRAYAL.
BY TEMO MPODI
Dineo is a 33 year-old mom and adventurer with a passion for storytelling. A trained television and film actress from Secunda, Mpumalanga, with 10 years’ experience on both local and international productions, this is her first leading role. We have seen her face on The Estate, Scandal, MTV Shuga and Justice Served, and we wondered what it was like stepping into the lead role with Law, Love & Betrayal. “I was excited to play a character unlike anyone I’ve played before. I got to work with an ensemble of amazing actors, which made the experience so much more incredible,” she said.
Sometimes when new things arise, we find ourselves ready as a result of the work we have been doing, and by our life experiences. “It felt like I have been preparing for this role for years. When the audition for this role came, I gave it everything,” she added.
She plays Gugu, a tough township lawyer who forces her way into a slick, family-owned firm in Sandton. The movie is based on real situations and cases, and that obviously stretched her mental horizons, pushing her to think fast and blend into a field she hasn’t tapped into before- law. She explained that they consulted experts to verify the content. “I really love the educational aspect of the show. The production team consulted top legal practitioners to ensure that our content and delivery was accurate and appropriate. I am excited to see how the
audience responds to the cases on the show, I learnt a lot while shooting,” she said.
“I always take something from the characters I play. It’s a beautiful journey when you get to heal and grow as you shoot. Gugu is very principled and assertive, qualities that I admire. I’m also inspired to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves.” It’s gratifying when you get on top of your new situation and have notes to take away, however trivial. She tells us that she has a “toolkit” she takes onto every set containing highlighters, pens, current favourite snacks, lip therapy, headphones, a fully charged power bank and gum. These are the props that help her get moving and drive the work forward.
Working with TV or film scripts, it sometimes happens that art imitates real life, allowing healing to take place through a TV character. Dineo experienced such a moment, which she describes as a bizarre coincidence. “I lost my sister in 2017. The next year, I booked MTV Shuga. In the story, my on-screen brother’s girlfriend, Tsholofelo, was hit by a car and died. My sister’s name was Tsholofelo and that is how she also passed on. At the media briefing, it was announced that the show would premiere on the 12th of February- the anniversary of my sister’s death.” It was almost as if the on-TV brother’s girlfriend was playing her sister, it was crazy.
Finally, we ask which actress would play her best in a movie. Her answer is Noxolo Dlamini, with a heart emoji next to her name! IB
The First Lady UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH
SHE DOES NOT NORMALLY DO MEDIA INTERVIEWS. THE LIMELIGHT IS CERTAINLY NOT AN OPTION FOR THIS HUMBLE WOMAN. INSTEAD, DR. TSHEPO MOTSEPE, WIFE OF PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA FOCUSES ON HER PHILANTHROPY, EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT AND A NEW BOOK, SHE TELLS GAVIN PRINS.
She had just turned 33 when some of her friends set her up on a blind date with the then secretary general of the National Union of Mineworkers, Cyril Ramaphosa. “When I told my parents about the new man in my life and that he was from Soweto, they were concerned. My Daddy said, “people from the cities did not behave like us from the rural areas,” says Dr Motsepe, laughing.
It was time for the big meeting. The trade unionist arrived at the family home in NorthWest, to meet Augustine and Margaret, her parents. After a brief exchange about his background—his parents being originally from the rural areas and not cities, the old man finally approved.
Apart from an occasional appearance at significant events to support her husband, she does not often venture into the public eye and rarely gives interviews. So, when we wanted to know more about her philanthropy, we knew it would be challenging, and it was. However, after two months of motivational emails, here she is. Dressed in a black and white two-piece outfit, the First Lady introduces herself simply as “Tshepo”, and we get right into it.
The intention was to find out about her work, but we started by asking questions about her family, and she relayed the sacrifices her parents made. Apart from her famous husband, her brother is
Patrice Motsepe, one of the wealthiest men in SA. Her sister is Bridget Motsepe, the first black producer of minerals in SA, and was married to a former Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe. Her sister Veronica was crowned Miss Africa South. So, I say there must have been something in the water in the family home in Mathibestad where they initially grew up.
“My father was very strict. He was Principal at Sekitla High School in Mathibestad, a rural village north of Hammanskraal. He was against Bantu education. He used to travel across the country in search of the best teachers. That is why his school had such a good pass rate.
“My dad said he wanted us his children to have the best education. So, all seven of us went to a convent boarding school in Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape. The nuns were strict. The food was awful. We used to look forward to holidays and going back home, but even that was not a holiday, as the first thing we did after unpacking our trunks was go to and work in the family shop.”
Her father used to love talking about his family. Dr Tshepo’s grandfather, Joseph Motsepe, was one of the domestic workers for one of the then government ministers. Her great grandfather had three wives. “I say I am related to everyone in my family’s rural village, Mmakau,” she laughs. Joseph was the first to introduce religion to the community and build the first church St. Andrew’s, still in operation today.
There were many tears when the children had to go back to boarding school, but “Daddy was adamant: education first.” Augustine also took it upon himself to guide his children in their careers. “I was told from a young age that I would be a doctor.” Bridget was too young to work in the family shop, so, her job was to count the money from the shops. “She used to call herself bank mistress and told us she was going to be rich. Patrice was very argumentative as a child, and Daddy used to say he was going to be a lawyer. Fanuel loved painting and drawing, he wanted to be an artist. My dad said he won’t make money and advised him to become an architect, which is the career he followed.” The same happened with the other children.
Dr Tshepo’s mother was Margaret Keneilwe. “She did not complete high school. But when she married Daddy, he encouraged her to finish her matric. She later trained as a midwife and used to go around on a bicycle in the community and help deliver babies.”
In 2007, after retiring and moving to Johannesburg to be closer to his children, Augustine, started writing his life story. A Professor at the Wits University History Project interviewed Augustine with the intention of writing a biography about his education at the University of Fort Hare. His contemporaries at Fort Hare were President Nelson Mandela, Prince Gatcha Buthelezi and Sir Seretse Khama. Sadly, Augustine died that same year before they could finish the book. Now the Motsepe children want to honour their father by continuing the project. “Just this year, we had a meeting with the Professor at Wits and asked him to finish the book which he agreed to.”
The First Lady has been involved in working with non-governmental organisations since 2006. The first was a shelter for homeless children, Kids’ Haven in Benoni. She was a trustee, now currently the patron of Wits Hospice. She is the Chairperson of the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation. The foundation consists of the Adopt a School Foundation, The Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (CRET), Black Umbrellas which supports the development of small and medium, previously disadvantaged black-owned businesses. She is a passionate and lifelong advocate for early childhood development. The organisation she has the longest history with is the Early Care Foundation which supports informal crèches or day care centres owned by private individuals in eight provinces. The organisation developed a training course registered with the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETA). The aim is to ensure that the children are in a safe, secure and stimulating environment.
She is a passionate and lifelong advocate for early childhood development.
When asked whether her circle of friends has changed since her husband became President, her answer is simple: “I am fortunate that I am still friends with the same people I befriended while I was at university.”
Another thing that has also not changed is her love for food. “I enjoy pap, tripe, morogo, samp and stew.” She remembers her time at University in KwaZulu-Natal, where she was introduced to spices. “I loved the food!” she says, then adds, “I am married to a man who loves cooking, and our children also love cooking.”
There is a knock on the boardroom door. A lady enters. We’re gently told to wrap it up. With everything that the Motsepe children have accomplished over the years, I can’t help but think Augustine must have been one proud man. And then, a phone call comes to say she needs to travel to an event. IB
BIZARRE FAN ENCOUNTERS
MANY FANS ASK FOR A SELFIE WHEN THEY MEET THEIR FAVOURITE CELEBRITIES WHILE OTHERS HAVE EXTREME REACTIONS. LIKE THE FAN WHO MET SINGER SELENA GOMEZ IN A MOVIE THEATRE AND WANTED TO KISS HER. THE JONAS BROTHERS ONCE RECEIVED A DEAD SHARK AS A GIFT, WHILE HARRY POTTER STAR RUPERT GRINT WAS INVITED TO A FAN’S HOUSE, DRESSED UP IN FULL DRAG AND TAKEN TO A NIGHTCLUB. HERE IN SA, WE ASKED OUR LOCAL PERSONALITIES IF SOUTH AFRICAN FANS BEHAVE. THE ANSWER? WELL, JUDGE FOR YOURSELF.

I was in Pretoria, shopping in a supermarket when a woman came up to me, hit me on the head with a piece of sausage she had in her hand and scolded me because of a bad character that I played in Getroud Met Rugby. Another weird encounter was a man who just came up to me once and kissed me. I was polite as I wiped my lips.

I was taking pictures with fans when suddenly this one lady took my hand and pulled me towards her. Then the other people standing there started a fight with her. It became a huge thing. I was confused – do I stay there or go backstage. The other time, a fan touched my bottom while the partner was with.
Nobuhle Mahlasela (actress)
One morning, after checking into a hotel the previous day, I was leaving for a shoot when I bumped into a fan at reception. She then asked me if I was not going to have breakfast. At first, I thought it was a staff member, but then she said she had booked into the same hotel I was staying at so she could have breakfast with me.

One time, a fan was trying to figure out what my feet looked like. They saw a video I posted of me walking across a street in Atlanta (Georgia) in my Gucci strap sandals. The person sent me a message saying my toes look good and they were surprised I didn’t have corns on my feet. This person clearly has a foot fetish.
HOPES ARE HIGH FOR Cape Town AS UFC TITLE DEFENCE VENUE
BY TEMO MPODI
EXCITEMENT IS IN THE AIR WITH THE NEWS THAT THE NEXT UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE DEFENCE MIGHT BE TAKING PLACE IN THE MOTHER CITY.
Dricus Du Plessis, who last championed the UFC Middleweight over Israel Adesanya in August 2024 in Australia, plans to make us proud again. However, the decision will only be made and announced at the end of October.
As speculation started on social media about the next UFC fight to take place in Cape Town, our very colourful Minister of Sports, Arts & Culture, Gayton McKenzie was quick to post on X saying: “Nothing has been finalised yet.”
“I see news articles about @UFC fight of @dricusduplessis happening in Cape Town, we are in final stages of negotiating that the fight happens in South Africa. We have not been given the green light. We will know by the end of October; no decision of hosting city can be made yet.”
We know you can make this happen Minister.
BOOK YOUR SEVENS TICKETS NOW!
Rugby fans and partygoers wishing to re-live the magic of the DHL Stadium rugby experience can do so for as little as R250 when the HSBC SVNS Cape Town returns to the Mother City on 7-8 December 2024.
Fresh from the Boks’ sellout sensation against the All Blacks 11 days ago, fans can book another slice of magic and mark the unofficial start of summer
on the SA calendar as the SVNS extravaganza returns. Tickets and hospitality packages for the highly popular event, which will yet again feature South Africa’s Olympic medal-winning Springbok Sevens team, just recently went on sale.
Seats cost between R250 and R800 per day, making it more affordable than ever. The event will yet again feature a unique festival of sport,
entertainment and culture set against the stunning backdrop of Table Mountain.
The tournament will feature the Olympic gold medal winning French men and New Zealand women’s teams, among the 12 teams in each competition, as well as Olympic sensations such as the USA women’s and Fijian men’s teams, while all the action will happen inside the DHL Stadium, creating a thrilling atmosphere.
LIFESAVING
SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer said: “Although fans from all over the world flock to Cape Town for this event – which has been voted the Best Live Experience in South Africa twice – we have to keep in mind our local supporters who love to attend this celebration of rugby and entertainment, and we’re certain tickets to this popular event will once again be a highly sought after item.” – SARUGBY
JAKE HUTTON WINS THREE TITLES AT 2024 LIFESAVING WORLD CHAMPS
With three gold medals and silver to his name, Jake Hutton (17) has made an impressive mark at the recent 2024 Lifesaving World Championships in Australia. His accolades include being the World International Youth Flags Champion, World Inter-Club Youth Flags Champion, and World Inter-Club Youth Sprints Champion, with a second-place finish in the World International Youth Sprints.
Representing SA on the global stage is a profound honour for Jake. “It feels amazing because it allows me to contribute to my nation while doing the sport I love,” he says. Despite his achievements, he remains focused and avoids pre-race rituals, instead relying on calm and concentration. – ELANA KROON

SAFA WAITS ON CAF WAFCON HOST DECISION
SAFA have submitted a bid to host the event that would afford WAFCON champions Banyana Banyana an opportunity to defend their crown on home soil.
Intense meetings were held in Nairobi, Kenya recently, which was chaired by CAF president Dr. Patrice Motsepe. Should South Africa secure the bid, it would provide a golden opportunity for Banyana Banyana, the reigning WAFCON champions, to defend their title on home turf.
With Bafana Bafana moving down two places on the FIFA ranking, lets hope for some good news. IB
PETE LINCOLN
GETTING TO KNOW THE man behind the mic
THEY HAVE BEEN ACTIVE SINCE 1963 AND YET SMOKIE REMAINS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR BANDS IN THE WORLD. SO, IN PREPARATION FOR THEIR SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR, MAURISHA NIEWENHUYS CAUGHT UP WITH LEAD SINGER PETE LINCOLN TO TALK ABOUT THE BAND’S LEGACY AND SO MUCH MORE.
You ‘ve had a dynamic career from your time with The Sweet to your current role with Smokie. What initially ignited your passion for music, and how has your approach to performing evolved over the years?
My passion for music started young, influenced by my musical parents and seeing the Beatles on TV at seven years old. I was hooked and knew that’s what I wanted to do.
Do you have any backstage rituals before performing?
I warm up my voice to keep it in shape. We have a lot of fun backstage, and we genuinely enjoy
each other’s company. It’s all about balance— taking care of yourself and enjoying time with the band.
Has anything hilarious ever happened during a concert?
One time, in Norway, the fire alarm went off after our first song, and we all had to evacuate into the freezing cold. After half an hour, we came back in and continued the show like nothing happened. It was quite an experience!
Do you have a favourite Smokie song?
I enjoy singing “A Few Dollars More,” but honestly, I like them all. IB
In 2008, Madonna and Guy Ritchie announced that their seven-year marriage was over because they had drifted apart. The press reported that without a pre-nuptial agreement, Ritchie could be looking at up to £50million of Madonna’s £300million fortune.
KNOW YOUR OCTOBER MUSIC HISTORY!
In 2015 One Direction played the final gig of their world tour before their self-proclaimed extended break. The show in Sheffield, England was the last of 80 shows across 20 countries. But 1D insisted they were not splitting up and instead wanted to focus on solo projects.
And in 2013 Marvin Gaye’s family were taking legal action against Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams for copyright infringement over their hit song Blurred Lines. Three of Gaye’s children filed legal papers accusing them of copying elements of the song “Got To Give It Up.” The Gaye family cited excerpts from magazine interviews given by Thicke to support their claim he had admitted to drawing on ‘Got to Give it Up’ when producing Blurred Lines.

Walking on cracks in asphalt, I don’t know where this superstition started, but I believe it’s bad luck walking on cracks - very illogical.
What’s the weirdest DM you’ve ever received?
I get so many DMs from people asking me for money. This one woman was so intense she would message me every single day. Finally, I replied with “I unfortunately don’t give money to strangers on the internet” to which she sent videos of her house, children and her bank statements, basically harassing me - I had to block her eventually.
How did you get started in your industry?
I’ve always enjoyed performing, I just waited a long time to shoot my shot. I finally did - without waiting for an agency or big shot producer to notice me, I just did it myself.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? I’ve been to many countries and have lived in four; I am very happy and content living in South Africa - there’s no place like home.

I receive weird DMs every single day but if I were to single one out it would be a mature lady asking me if they could be my “sugar momma” and men asking me for naked pictures.
How did you get started in your industry?
I got started in trading by seeing guys do it on YouTube and social media. It intrigued me and my mission to find a mentor started right there and then, I needed someone to teach me. Fast forward 3.5 years later and I’m still loving every bit of it.

I did get a DM once of a lady telling me that I had saved her marriage- since she started using my recipes, her husband had fallen in love with her cooking skills.

I often cooked for family and friends and always received compliments about my food but I was very shy and it took me some time to create a TikTok account and post a video. Born free: A GENERATION OF HOPE
THE APARTHEID MUSEUM IS PARTNERING WITH THE NELSON MANDELA FOUNDATION TO PRESENT BORN FREE: GENERATION OF HOPE, A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION BY DUTCH PHOTOGRAPHER ILVY NJIOKIKTJIEN, IN WHICH SHE EXPLORES THE LIVES OF SOUTH AFRICA’S FIRST GENERATION BORN AFTER APARTHEID.
The exhibition is curated by celebrated South African photographer Neo Ntsoma and Azu Nwagbogu, founder of the LagosPhoto Festival and the African Artists’ Foundation.
Born Free: Generation of Hope is a visual and narrative exploration of South Africa’s journey over the past three decades through the eyes of those born after the end of apartheid in 1994 –the first generation to grow up in a democratic
South Africa, free from institutionalised racial segregation and discrimination. They were meant to be the face of a “Rainbow Nation” where everyone has equal opportunities.
Despite the initial optimism, many still struggle with the socio-economic disparities that continue to shape South African society. However, this generation is also marked by cultural and social shifts. Born frees are more interconnected, often forming relationships across racial lines –something previously unimaginable. They are increasingly vocal and active in addressing social issues, pushing for further transformation and justice.
Ilvy Njiokiktjien has meticulously documented the lives of this generation since 2007. “I photographed intimate, funny moments and important steps in their lives. The born frees also let me in on the harsh realities of not being able to find a job and on feelings of not belonging.
The exhibition includes a powerful documentary which opens a dialogue about the born free generation’s journey.
Neo Ntsoma brings a deeply personal perspective to the exhibition. “Curating Born Free has been an exercise in self-reflection,” says Ntsoma. “From conceptualising the themes of the exhibition to selecting the final images, every step has required careful consideration and attention to detail.”
“Through her lens, Njiokiktjien charts a visual narrative that captures the successes and failures of this new nation,” says Ntsoma. “As someone who lived through the final years of apartheid and witnessed the birth of our democracy, it forced me to confront the complexities of our past and present.”
Azu Nwagbogu brings a broader African context to the exhibition. “The history of modern nations in the twentieth century is often told through the lens of a single influential figure,” says Nwagbogu. “Yet South Africa stands out as a unique case. As one of the youngest democracies on earth, its history is shaped through the collective eyes of its people, guided by a progressive constitution that was constructed with an awareness of history and led by a world-revered figure, Nelson Mandela, whose vision and leadership steered the nation through its most challenging times.” The exhibition runs until 31 March 2025. THE BENEFITS OF glycolic acid
BY FUNDAMENTALS SKINCARE
ANYONE WHO HAS INVESTED EVEN A LITTLE IN THEIR SKINCARE KNOWS ABOUT THE WONDER INGREDIENT – GLYCOLIC ACID. KNOWN FOR ITS EXFOLIATING AND SKIN RENEWING PROPERTIES, THIS INGREDIENT IS A MUSTHAVE IN SKINCARE.
Fundamentals Skincare’s Natasha Davel explains that: “Glycolic acid is a water-soluble alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) made from sugar cane. It is one of the most widely used AHAs in skin care products. AHAs are natural acids that come from plants. They consist of tiny molecules that are very easy for your skin to absorb. This makes them ideal for smoothing fine lines, improving skin texture, anti-ageing uses, acne, dark skin patches on the face, and acne scars.”
How Glycolic Acid Works
Glycolic acid has the smallest-sized molecules of all the AHAs. This allows it to absorb into the skin and exfoliate it even better than other AHAs. This form of AHA works by speeding up cell turnover. In other words, it dissolves the bonds that hold skin cells together. In effect, your skin is able to shed dead skin cells more quickly than
it would on its own. It triggers your skin to make more collagen as well. Collagen is the protein that makes skin firm, plump, and elastic. It also gives your bones and connective tissues their strength.
“We all know by now that your skin makes less collagen as you age. Collagen is also destroyed when you spend too much time in the sun. Using glycolic acid each day can help prevent the breakdown of collagen,” adds Davel.
The Benefits and More
1. Anti-ageing: it smooths fine wrinkles and improves the skin’s tone and texture.
2. Hydration: it plumps the skin and prevents it from getting dry.
3. Sun damage and hyperpigmentation: it fades dark patches caused by sun damage and protects collagen from the sun.
4. Complexion: it brightens the skin when used regularly.
5. Exfoliation: it prevents ingrown hairs and makes pores appear smaller by helping the skin shed dead skin cells.
6. Acne: it cleans out pores to prevent comedones, blackheads, and inflamed breakouts.
How to Use Glycolic Acid Safely
1. Always apply your sunscreen: like all AHAs, glycolic acid can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
2. Allow your skin to get used to glycolic acid: start by applying it just three times per week for a week or so. If your skin isn’t red or irritated, try using it four times a week for a week or two. Keep slowly building up use this way until you’re able to use it every day. If at any point your skin becomes irritated, give your skin a rest before trying again.
3. Accept the process: your skin may feel a bit rough after your first few treatments. This is normal and just means that the glycolic acid is working. Unless your skin is irritated, keep using your glycolic acid product. You should slowly start to see smoother, healthier skin.
“Glycolic Acid is a beautiful ingredient when used correctly. If you are unsure about where to start and how to incorporate this serum into your daily routine, our team offer you free skin consultations on our website to help effectively guide and support you through your skincare journey,” concludes Davel.

A NEWLY-LAUNCHED LABEL, ERYCA, EMBODIES THE PHILOSOPHY THAT LIFE SHOULD BE LIVED IN COLOUR. THIS VIBRANT AND JOYFUL KNITWEAR COLLECTION IS MADE TO BOOST YOUR MOOD AND YOUR WARDROBE, TURNING AN EVERYDAY OUTFIT INTO A WORK OF ART.
BY TEMO MPODI
Luxe fashion has emerged from the South African ground, and it is being well-rooted and celebrated across the globe. Fashion brands like David Tlale, MaXhosa, Thebe Magugu, Rich Mnisi etc; brands that have seen international celebrities warm greatly to them. Eryca is also here to set a high standard and project an image of luxury and boldness. “In creating Eryca, I wanted to bottle a feeling of confidence that you can step into whenever you need it. When you put on one of our garments, you’re going to feel bold and adventurous, without going entirely outside of your comfort zone. It’s a simple way of bringing joy into your everyday wardrobe,” says founder Erica Morgan-Tanton.
This brand is made from locally sourced Merino Wool, Kid Mohair, and Mulberry Silk. The exclusive collection combines comfort and beauty to create
versatile pieces that can be worn all year round. The range is trans-seasonal as wool is thermoregulating, making it the perfect material for everyday wear, more especially in cities like Cape Town. With a staunch belief in slow fashion and master craftsmanship, Eryca is about creating timeless pieces.
Inspired by the versatile Erica flower, founder Erica Morgan-Tanton titled the label with careful consideration beyond a play on her own name. This endemic plant thrives everywhere - shifting into a tame garden shrub inland, or standing its ground amongst wild, dense fynbos along the coast. Blooming the whole year round, the Erica is as trans-seasonal as the clothing collection. It flowers in vibrant colours, radiating the same sense of happiness and adventure. The addition of the “y” in the name hints at yarn, tying back to the brand’s knitwear focus. Art is embodied in
everything with Eryca, not just the fashion pieces.
A celebration of colour and craftsmanship, Eryca’s knitwear collection epitomises luxury through its commitment to exceptional art and limited production runs. Each piece is carefully handfinished by skilled local artisans, enhancing the allure of its creations. This meticulous approach makes Eryca a coveted choice for those who value both distinction and quality in their wardrobe. While offering comfort and sophistication, the garments are designed to be carried with a personal sense of style and individuality. “If you go out to an event wearing an Eryca garment, chances are you’re going to be the only person there wearing one. Like any good piece of art, our knitwear is purposefully unique and made to stand out,” says Morgan-Tanton. To shop Eryca’s bright, bold, and beautiful designs, visit www.eryca.co.za. IB
05 ESSENTIAL EXERCISES TO HELP
YOU
GET back into running
RETURNING TO RUNNING AFTER A LONG BREAK CAN BE CHALLENGING, AS YOUR MUSCLES AND OVERALL FITNESS MAY HAVE CHANGED. TO ENSURE A SAFE AND EFFECTIVE TRANSITION, KAREN LOADER, CEO OF F45 TRAINING, RECOMMENDS FOCUSING ON EXERCISES THAT BUILD STRENGTH AND STABILITY.
Loader emphasises the importance of patience, saying, “Remember that you haven’t been running for a while, so be kind to yourself. Accept your current fitness level and embrace the journey back to running.”
She shares five essential exercises to help ease back into running:
01
Glute bridges
Strengthening your glutes is crucial for a stable and efficient running stride. Glute bridges build the necessary hip stability and improve your running mechanics by enhancing hip strength.
04
Squats
Squats target the quads, hamstrings, and glutes—muscles essential for powering your stride. Regularly incorporating squats into your routine will help build the lower body strength needed for running.
02
Lunges
Lunges are excellent for boosting balance and strengthening the legs, particularly the glutes and hamstrings. Enhanced glute and hamstring strength helps stabilise the knees, reducing injury risk.
03
Planks
A strong core is essential for maintaining proper running form. Planks engage core muscles, supporting better posture and reducing strain on your lower back during runs.
05
Single-leg deadlifts
This exercise improves balance and strengthens the posterior chain, including the hamstrings and lower back. Single-leg deadlifts are vital for injury prevention and stability while running.
“Additionally, it is highly recommended to do dynamic stretching and incorporate movements such as leg swings, walking lunges with a twist, and high knees into your warm-up routine. These exercises help increase blood flow, enhance flexibility, and prepare your muscles and joints for the impact of running. They also mimic running motions, improve your range of motion, and contribute to a smoother and safer running experience,” concludes Loader. IB
A DAY WITH A wellness expert
I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE HEALTH AND FITNESS INDUSTRY OVER 11 YEARS AGO AND TODAY, I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT I FEEL LIKE I’M FULLY LIVING MY DREAM. I HAVE BUILT AN INCREDIBLE PROFESSIONAL TEAM, THE BEST CLIENTS, I AM IN AN INVIGORATING INDUSTRY AND NO DAY IS EVER THE SAME! AS WE SPEAK, I’M GETTING READY TO OPEN BUSINESS NUMBER FOUR, AND I FEEL LIKE THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING. I HAVEN’T EVEN SCRATCHED THE SURFACE OF EVERYTHING I STILL PLAN ON DOING.
BY EMMA SCHOLTZ
Rise ‘n shine sleeping beauty
For many years I battled with time management, motivation, and early mornings, which is kind of crazy that I’m now in an industry that starts at 5am daily. I motivate people for a living and have a back-to-back schedule that leaves no room for procrastination or tardiness. Taking action now happens without a thought and motivation is a byproduct of consistent habits that have been built and nurtured over time. Early mornings are only successful if they are prepared for the day before! When my alarm goes off at 4am, I know that in exactly 1 hour I need to be opening my business. Even after 11+ years, I still have anxiety about accidentally oversleeping. For this reason, 3-4 alarms are set, or I leave my phone in another room so that I’m forced to get up and start my day. Coffee, lunch packed, bags ready and getting cute will all happen so that I’m out the door and on the road in no time. 30 powerful minutes is all it takes for me to tackle the day ahead! One of my favourite things about waking up early is that I feel like I get a head start on everyone and everything. Leaving in the dark, driving on an open road, no noise, no distractions. It’s pure bliss and it reminds me that I’ve got an edge.
Time to move
Arriving at Fitbae inc. Workout Studio, lights, music, and action! Back-to-back clients from 5am – 12pm daily. A chance to connect, uplift, educate, move, laugh, and conquer some goals. I always tell my team we should be the best part of someone’s day. The gym in general is quite a vulnerable place for people. Trying and failing. Not feeling confident. Pushing beyond limits. This is where real growth and breakthroughs happen.
A lot of the time internal work is happening when we physically execute. At some point in the morning, it’s also important for me to be mindful, step out of my immediate setting and prioritise my own health. Finding time to nourish, connect with my team and check-in with myself.
Breathe, nourish, reset
By the time midday hits, my mind and body need a proper reset. Generally, this is the time most of us feel a slump and need a pick me up of sorts. This looks different every day but for the most part, a sit-down meal is a must. Ever noticed how different you feel when you actually sit, away from work distractions and eat slowly? Some days I choose to move in this gap, other days my body needs a 30-minute power nap. Whatever I choose on that day needs to directly impact my mental health and productivity for the rest of the day. I prefer to keep things simple in the week as this leaves little room for procrastination or overwhelm.
Strategy and planning are what success is built on.
Proud and productive!
My afternoon is when “Boss Mode,” kicks in and I need to power through non-negotiable tasks. Admin, client consultations, business meetings, project planning etc. This is the time for me to be working on my businesses and not in my businesses. Strategy and planning are what success is built on, so I prioritise this daily. Sipping on speciality coffees and snacking on biltong and nuts is what you’ll find me fuelling with here.
Winding down
By 8pm, Fitbae inc. Workout Studio closes, and I can now switch off, connect with loved ones, and
share a healthy dinner. I’m currently in a “hustle season” and this means that sleep and socialising are not high on the “to-do list.” As a health and fitness professional, I know this isn’t the best and most balanced way of living. It’s tough to get this right and be nailing every aspect of the wellness game. Haven’t we all been there? For the most part however, I listen to my body as best I can and rest well over weekends. Our bodies are incredible and so resilient, taking care of them, however, should be non-negotiable. Sticking with daily basics like moving, eating consistently nutritious meals, taking time for mental health and resting well will serve you in so many beautiful ways.
From one random writer to another random reader, we are not too different. Busy days, crazy schedules, high expectations, growth, change and so many other things. We don’t always get it right and often, days can feel overwhelming but here’s what I can confirm: we only have one body; health is always wealth. Time will pass anyway, so we might as well make the most of it. Don’t let your dreams only happen in your sleep, wake up, show up for yourself and make them happen! IB
BOOST libido YOUR
BY DR CHANELL MARTHINUSSEN, INNOHEALTH CLINIC
LIBIDO, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS SEXUAL DESIRE, IS A FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF HUMAN SEXUALITY THAT VARIES WIDELY AMONG INDIVIDUALS AND CAN BE INFLUENCED BY A MULTITUDE OF FACTORS. THIS ARTICLE EXPLORES THE CONCEPT OF LIBIDO, ITS IMPORTANCE IN RELATIONSHIPS AND OVERALL WELL-BEING, AND FACTORS THAT CAN EITHER ENHANCE OR DIMINISH SEXUAL DESIRE.
Libido can fluctuate throughout life due to various factors such as age, health status, hormonal changes, and psychological well-being. Puberty marks the beginning of sexual maturity. Libido increases significantly due to hormonal changes, particularly the rise in testosterone in males and oestrogen in females.
Libido peaks in young adulthood (late teens to twenties) when individuals are typically at their physical and reproductive prime. New relationships, exploration, and experimentation contribute to higher libido levels. In an older age group (20-40s), libido varies widely based on individual factors such as stress levels, relationship status, health, and lifestyle. Generally, it tends to stabilise but can still fluctuate significantly.
During a woman’s pregnancy and postpartum period, libido can fluctuate due to hormonal changes and physical discomfort. After childbirth, libido may be affected by factors such as breastfeeding, fatigue, and changes in body image.
Waning sex drive
After 40 years old, libido may decrease
somewhat, mainly due to hormonal changes (e.g., menopause in women, andropause in men), stress, and relationship dynamics. Libido tends to decrease further in older age due to declining hormone levels, health issues, and changes in physical capability. However, libido can still vary widely among individuals.
Studies suggest that a significant proportion of the general population experiences some degree of decreased libido at various points in their lives. Estimates vary, but it’s reported that around 1530% of individuals may experience reduced sexual desire at any given time.
A waning sex drive, also known as a decrease in libido, can be influenced by a variety of factors. Lifestyle factors such as high levels of stress, whether from work, finances, or personal life, can significantly reduce sexual desire. Fatigue, lack of sleep, and physical exhaustion can also decrease libido. Conflict, unresolved issues, poor communication, and emotional distance between partners can all impact sexual desire. A lack of emotional intimacy can be particularly detrimental to libido.
Certain medical conditions can affect libido, including chronic illnesses, diabetes mellitus,
hypertension, and neurological disorders. Medications used to treat these conditions can also have side effects that reduce sexual desire. Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress disorders can diminish libido. Body image concerns, low self-esteem, and a history of trauma or abuse can also negatively impact sexual desire. Excessive use of alcohol and certain drugs can impair sexual function and decrease libido. Poor diet, lack of exercise, and unhealthy habits such as smoking can contribute to reduced libido.
Maintaining a lifestylehealthy can support sexual health and libido.
Routine or lack of novelty and excitement in the relationship can lead to a decrease in sexual desire. Sociocultural beliefs and values around sex and sexuality can influence libido. Guilt or shame related to sex, especially in specific cultural or religious contexts, can impact sexual desire.
While lowered libido is common, it’s important to note that it is not necessarily permanent or untreatable. Addressing the underlying causes, such as diagnosing medical conditions, reducing stress, improving communication in relationships, and seeking therapy or counselling when needed, can often help improve libido and overall sexual satisfaction.
Experiencing a dip in your sex life can be concerning, but there are many steps you can take to address and potentially overcome this issue.
Tips to help
1
Communicate with your partner: open and honest communication about your feelings, desires, and concerns is crucial. Discuss any changes in your libido and how they are impacting your relationship. Sharing your thoughts can strengthen emotional intimacy and help find solutions together.
2
Address underlying issues and educate yourself: identify any underlying factors contributing to the dip in your sex life. This could include stress, relationship problems, health issues, medications, or hormonal changes. Addressing these issues with the help of a healthcare provider, counsellor, or therapist can be beneficial.
3 Explore new things and prioritise intimacy: trying new activities or experiences together can reignite excitement and passion. This could include trying new hobbies, going on adventures, or exploring different ways to be intimate. Intimacy is not just about sex but also about emotional closeness and connection.
4 Take care of yourself first: physical and mental well-being plays a significant
role in libido. Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, and manage stress effectively. Taking care of yourself can improve overall energy levels and mood, positively impacting your sex life. Convince your partner to care for themselves, mentally and physically (males often need some convincing).
5
Create a positive environment: make your bedroom a comfortable and inviting space for intimacy. Reduce distractions, create a relaxing atmosphere, and prioritise privacy and time alone.
6
Seek professional help: if the dip in your sex life persists despite efforts to address it, consider seeking guidance from a therapist or counsellor who specialises in sexual health or relationship issues. They can provide personalised strategies and support.
Remember, every relationship and individual is unique, so it may take some experimentation and effort to find what works best for you and your partner. Be open to trying new approaches and adjust expectations as needed to improve your sexual satisfaction and overall relationship quality. Be patient with yourself and your partner as you work through these changes together.
Medication to improve libido
Medication to improve libido is typically considered when there is an underlying medical condition that directly affects sexual desire or when hormonal imbalances are identified as the cause of decreased libido.
Medication might be necessary to improve libido when there are:
• Hormonal imbalances: if blood tests reveal low levels of testosterone in men or oestrogen in women, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be recommended. Hormone therapy may be recommended for women experiencing symptoms of menopause (such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness) or for men experiencing symptoms of andropause (such as fatigue, decreased muscle mass). These therapies can sometimes improve libido as well.
• Certain medical conditions or psychiatric conditions requiring treatment may/may not have side effects affecting libido.
• Erectile dysfunction diagnosis: in men, difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection (erectile dysfunction) can lead to decreased sexual desire. Medications may be prescribed to improve erectile function, which in turn can help restore libido.
• There are some medications specifically designed to enhance libido or sexual desire in females; these would require a consultation with healthcare providers.
It’s essential for individuals experiencing a decrease in libido to discuss concerns with a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate holistic course of action.
HERMANUS
WITH ITS BREATHTAKING SCENERY, THE COASTAL TOWN OF HERMANUS HAS MORE THAN JUST UNPARALLELED BEAUTY. IT HAS MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE, UPMARKET SHOPS AND A VARIETY OF ADVENTURE OPTIONS. THE WHALE SEASON HAS STARTED. AT JUST UNDER 2 HOURS FROM CAPE TOWN, WE SUGGEST YOU HEAD ON OVER THERE. AND DON’T FORGET YOUR CAMERA.
Three Mpumalanga adventures YOU MUST DO
THE DUNKELD COUNTRY & EQUESTRIAN ESTATE IS LOCATED IN THE QUAINT TOWN OF DULLSTROOM IN MPUMALANGA, COMBINING BOTH ADVENTURE AND COUNTRYSIDE LIVING. THE MPUMALANGA TOURISM AND PARKS AGENCY RECENTLY INVITED US TO EXPLORE ACTIVITIES IN THE PROVINCE. THE FIRST STOP WAS DULLSTROOM.
BY GAVIN PRINS
Horseriding (Dunkel Country & Equestrian Estate, Dullstroom)
Again, this activity is for professionals and the-not-so-experienced like me. The ride starts off at the stables of the estate. The guides say nothing, but put the necessary gear and helmet on you. They go in front and the horse just follows the guides. Off we go along two small dams meandering through a forest., it’s all very peaceful. Because of its size, the horses can be intimidating but at no point did we feel unsafe. Your children will love you for this. 1
Mountain hiking (Incwala Lodge)
With just five chalets located in the bush in the mountainous landscape of Emgwenya, Incwala Lodge offers an abundance of birdlife, fly fishing dams, hiking trails, and ancient ruins to explore. We opted for the hiking trail that eventually leads to the historic ancient ruins. The walk up the mountain can be quite steep at times but fortunately only for a short while. Any member of your family can do this hike. When we reached the top, the view was spectacular, stretching as far as the eye can see. Right in front of us, were stone remains dating back thousands of years. There are many stories about what appear to be perfectly flat stones stacked, in certain places, up to a metre high and in a circle with no entrance. The story goes that people used elephants to drop them in the middle of the circle as a safety measure.
Conclusion
Quad-biking (Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate, Dullstroom)
If you are a city slicker like me and love an adventure, take a short drive down to Dullstroom to explore quad-biking. Their trail is perfect both for novices (like me) and experienced riders. The trail took me through a river crossing, past tall trees into the woods, ending up at the residential estate. The trail is about 30 minutes. The views are magnificent and the atmosphere peaceful. The ride is also not for the fainthearted. One of our riders mistook the accelerator for the brake and ended up against a tree. So, make sure you listen carefully when the guides explain how to ride the bike. Make this a one of a kind experience.
They say Mpumalanga is much more than just the Kruger National Park; I only explored a little bit of the province but I can’t wait for my next trip. No wonder the province is reported to be just behind the Western Cape as the most popular destination among local and international travellers. IB

I miss the spices in food! I still find that food here can be rather bland.
Why did you move to the UK?
I moved to the UK after marrying my husband, Matt Fiddes. It was an exciting new chapter in my life, both personally and professionally, as it allowed me to explore new opportunities in music and business.
What was your biggest misconception of the culture?
I initially thought the culture would be vastly different, but I was pleasantly surprised by how welcoming and diverse it is. Something I wish a lot more people knew would be that it doesn’t rain all day, every day, all year round as people portray it. We have lovely summers here, too!
Tell us about the community you live in?
We live in a beautiful area with a close-knit community. People here are friendly and supportive, and there’s a strong sense of belonging, which has made the transition much easier.
What do you love about the people?
I love how respectful and open-minded people are here. They embrace different cultures and are always curious to learn more about South Africa, which makes me feel at home.
What do you still find challenging living there?
I miss the spices in food! I still find that food here can be rather bland, and I find myself buying south African spices to put in my food. There are so many South African shops here which has made it easier
Any chance of moving back to SA?
South Africa will always hold a special place in my heart because that is where all of my childhood memories are. The UK is where we are building our lives and careers and we would love to make South Africa a part of that- potentially opening Matt Fiddes Martial Arts franchises or working on a property portfolio there. I do think it is important for my children to know and experience where their mom came from and that means that South Africa will always play a role in our lives.
Your highlight of living there?
The highlight has been growing our family and business together while exploring new avenues in my music career. My family is my whole world! They will be my highlight forever.
There must be something from SA that you miss...
I miss the food and things that are so unique to South Africa. Braais, biltong, and the warmth of the people are irreplaceable! IB
IT’S ALL ABOUT
Family
BY SIMON MARITZ
THE NEW GENERATION LAND ROVER DISCOVERY HAS BEEN AROUND FOR 7 YEARS ALREADY, BUT FAR FROM LOOKING OLD AND FAMILIAR, THIS HANDSOME 7-SEATER IS REDEFINING THE WAY WE TRAVEL WITH FAMILY, AND MAKING NEW FANS EVERYDAY.
o I am going to make a pretty bold statement upfront, and I know I’m going to get an assortment of mild outrage from all corners, but here goes- the Land Rover Discovery is the most complete family vehicle on the market at the moment. Without a doubt.
Now I could follow this up with an assortment of technical specifications, market statistics and feature comparisons to justify my statement, but that’s just not my style, and it certainly isn’t what the Discovery is all about. Instead, the Discovery just seems to hit the brief every time- without drama, in style and supreme comfort.
The Land Rover Discovery nameplate has been around for 35 years now, and it’s one of the few vehicles that has remained true to purpose even after five generations. The current generation certainly follows that tradition of a true off-road capable family
car, albeit with enough modern luxuries to appeal to the most discerning clan.
With the Discovery you get a sense that the designers actually have families and that every component, position, material and space has been considered to serve the family. But it would be disingenuous to suggest that this is purely a family car when in fact it has capabilities that far exceed even the most demanding adventurer.
More so than most modern SUV’s, the Discovery is one of those vehicles that makes sense, the more time you spend with it. Regardless of the feature list, the power train specifications or a gallery of attractive images, you need to sit inside the Discovery to appreciate the intuitive nature of this substantial 4x4. Spend a weekend with it and you will find yourself perusing the ‘Build Your Own’ section on the Land Rover website during the Sunday night movie. It’s that good.
“You’d be hard-pressed to find a better vehicle suited to family life than the Land Rover Discovery.”
We all buy family cars for a particular reason. Some need space, some need hardiness, and some need adaptability or versatility. Sometimes the family car is just a taxi running between school, the beach or your local mall.
No matter what you throw at it (or in it), the Discovery just gets on with the job, ever now and again surprising you by how well it conquers the mundane trip just as easily as the overland adventure. Think of it as the automotive
equivalent of a Swiss army knife. Sure, you could get yourself a handmade Damascus steel knife, or a machete, but there will always be a time when these just won’t cut it. And it’s at this moment when you need something extraordinary , where the Discovery puts up its hand and says “I’ve got this”.
The Discovery is available at Land Rover Constantiaberg starting from R1 798 600.
Zambia: A LAND OF UNTAMED BEAUTY AND NATIONAL PARKS
NESTLED IN THE HEART OF SOUTHERN AFRICA, ZAMBIA IS A COUNTRY OF STUNNING NATURAL BEAUTY, RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE, AND AN INCREDIBLE ARRAY OF WILDLIFE. ZAMBIA OFFERS AUTHENTIC SAFARI EXPERIENCES THAT ARE SECOND TO NONE, WITH ITS VAST WILDERNESS AREAS AND UNSPOILED LANDSCAPES.
The country’s national parks are a testament to its commitment to preserving its natural heritage, providing sanctuary for a diverse range of species and offering visitors an opportunity to experience nature at its most raw and unfiltered.
A peek into Zambia’s wilderness
Zambia is home to 20 national parks, each offering a unique window into the country’s diverse ecosystems. These parks cover a variety of landscapes, from floodplains and swamps to dense woodlands and open savannahs. The sheer diversity of habitats makes Zambia a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, bird watchers, and adventure seekers alike.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Zambia’s national parks is their relative seclusion. Unlike some of the more commercialised parks in Africa, Zambia’s parks are often less crowded, allowing for more intimate and exclusive wildlife encounters. Here, visitors can truly connect with nature, often finding themselves alone with a pride of lions or a herd of elephants.
The Crown Jewels of Zambia’s National Parks
South Luangwa National Park
Often referred to as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, South Luangwa is the jewel in Zambia’s crown. The Luangwa River, which runs through the park, is the lifeblood of this ecosystem, attracting an abundance of wildlife. The park is particularly famous for its large populations of leopards and lions, as well as its pioneering walking safaris. Exploring South Luangwa on foot offers a unique perspective, allowing visitors to track animals, discover smaller creatures, and immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the bush.
Lower Zambezi National Park
Nestled along the northern banks of the mighty Zambezi River, Lower Zambezi National Park is a pristine wilderness area that offers a mix of land and water-based activities. Canoeing down the Zambezi offers a tranquil and intimate way to view wildlife, as elephants, buffalo, and other animals come down to the water’s edge to drink. The park’s remote location ensures that visitors can experience its beauty without the crowds,
making it a perfect destination for those seeking solitude in nature.
Kafue National Park
Zambia’s largest and oldest national park, Kafue, is a vast and diverse wilderness area that covers an astonishing 22,400 square kilometers. The park is home to a wide range of habitats, including miombo woodlands, floodplains, and swamps, which support an equally diverse array of wildlife. Kafue is known for its impressive populations of big cats, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs, as well as its large herds of elephants and antelope. The park’s Busanga Plains are particularly renowned for their seasonal floodwaters, which attract an array of birdlife and other animals.
Liuwa Plain National Park
Located in the far west of Zambia, Liuwa Plain is one of Africa’s most remote and least-visited parks, making it a true wilderness experience. The park is famous for its annual wildebeest migration, the second largest in Africa, which sees tens of thousands of wildebeest moving across the plains in search of fresh grazing. Liuwa Plain is also home to a unique pride of lions, led by the legendary lioness Lady Liuwa, who lived in the park for many years without any other lions, embodying the resilience of this wild and untamed land.
Why Zambia Should Be Your Next Safari Destination
For those seeking an authentic and off-thebeaten-path safari experience, Zambia is a destination that should not be overlooked. Its national parks offer a rare combination of breathtaking beauty, abundant wildlife, and a sense of seclusion that is increasingly hard to find in today’s world. Whether you’re tracking lions on foot in South Luangwa, paddling down the Zambezi River, or witnessing the wildebeest migration in Liuwa Plain, Zambia’s national parks promise an adventure that is as wild and untamed as the land itself.
In a world where many places have become over-commercialised, Zambia remains a bastion of true wilderness, where nature reigns supreme and the rhythms of the wild dictate the pace of life. For the intrepid traveler, there are few places left on Earth that offer such a profound connection to nature. Zambia’s national parks are not just a destination; they are a journey into the heart of Africa, where the spirit of the wild is alive and well.
Fun facts about visiting Zambia
Home of Victoria Falls: Zambia is home to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the Victoria Falls, locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means “The Smoke That Thunders.” The falls create a mist visible from miles away and offer breathtaking views and thrilling activities like bungee jumping and white-water rafting.
Walking safaris originated here: Zambia is the birthplace of the walking safari. Exploring the wild on foot gives you a unique, up-close experience with nature that you can’t get from a vehicle. South Luangwa National Park is particularly famous for its walking safaris.
A haven for birdwatchers: Zambia is a paradise for birdwatchers, boasting over 750 bird species. The diverse habitats, from wetlands to woodlands, support a wide variety of birds, including the rare Shoebill stork and the African Pitta.
Zambezi river adventures: the mighty Zambezi River, Africa’s fourth-longest river, offers incredible adventure opportunities. You can enjoy canoeing safaris, fishing for tiger fish, or simply cruising at sunset while watching elephants on the riverbanks.
The world’s largest mammal migration: Zambia’s Kasanka National Park hosts the world’s largest mammal migration every November and December, when millions of straw-coloured fruit bats fill the skies—a truly awe-inspiring sight!
A country of friendly people: Zambians are known for their warmth and hospitality. Visitors often speak of the friendly smiles and helpful nature of the locals, which add to the charm of visiting the country.

THIS HOME FOR A MULTI-GENERATIONAL FAMILY BREAKS THE MOULD FOR LUXURY HOMES WITH A SCULL IN THE POOL AND AN ABSTRACT ROOFLINE.
In the world of architecture, the boundaries of what a family home can be are constantly being pushed, and one exciting example of this is a modern, angular multi-family home clad in perforated metal panels.
Designed by Werner van der Meulen of Nico van der Meulen Architects for a couple with two adult children and their families, it creates a multi-generational compound.
This remarkable property, situated in Sandhurst, Sandton, on 6 000sq.m. (66 000sq.ft.)of land, the 3200sq.m. (35000sq.ft.) home is surrounded by
large, ancient trees, and sets a new standard in luxury boutique residential living by blending artistic, abstract, sculptural design with practical living space and modern amenities, making it a standout in any neighbourhood.
Unlike traditional residential designs, this distinctive architectural apartment concept features a shared basement and ground level housing a protected porte cochère, entertainment spaces, a barbecue area with an outdoor pool, a commercial kitchen and a dining area suitable for large-scale catering, a large gymnasium, an indoor swimming pool,
parking for 12 vehicles, as well as a private theatre accommodating 18 guests, complete with an entertainment area and bar.
The outdoor pool features a scull in the floor created with mosaic next to a water feature and open air firepit.
The upper two floors consist of 3 private apartments for the owners and their two children’s families: each apartment features a spacious living room with an open-plan kitchen, dining room, study, and four suites.
The northern elevations on all three floors are entirely glazed, offering a unique and breathtaking tree-house experience while bringing in natural light and providing a sense of warmth and grandeur within the home.
Being in the southern hemisphere facing the building north allows winter sun into the house, while the roof overhangs screen the glass from the summer sun.
The use of black aluminium panels on the
exterior of the home not only provides an aesthetic appeal and a touch of sophistication but also serves a functional purpose, shading/ insulating and protecting the home from harsh weather elements, making it a durable and lowmaintenance option.
In conclusion, this modern, angular home constructed in steel, concrete and glass, clad in aluminium panels over a structural steel frame, is a stunning example of how architecture can push the boundaries of what a home can be.
Its unique design and functional features make it not only aesthetically pleasing but also energyefficient and sustainable, setting a new standard in luxurious residential living. IB
LET’S GET whimsical
IN A POST-PANDEMIC WORLD NOW FACING INCREASING GLOBAL INSTABILITY AND TURMOIL, PEOPLE ARE YEARNING FOR MORE LIGHTNESS AND FUN IN THEIR LIVES. THE CONSTANT BARRAGE OF TROUBLING NEWS AND THE PERVASIVE SENSE OF UNCERTAINTY HAVE CREATED A COLLECTIVE NEED FOR MOMENTS OF JOY AND ESCAPISM.
“After a period of conformity and restraint, people are eager to express their individuality and creativity and this desire for lightheartedness is reflected in various aspects of daily life, including home décor trends,” says Yael Geffen, CEO of Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty.
“For years, minimalism and neutral colour pallets were the dominant trends but we’re now seeing a revival of retro trends like 70’s décor, which evoke nostalgia for simpler times, as well as new trends which are the complete antithesis of many of the trends of the past decade.
“One clear manifestation of this shift is the growing popularity of whimsical décor. In stark contrast to the minimalist and often sombre designs that have dominated in recent years, whimsical décor offers a burst of colour, creativity, and playfulness.
“People are turning to vibrant hues, eclectic patterns, and quirky accessories to infuse their living spaces with a sense of cheer and individuality. This trend isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a deliberate effort to create environments that foster happiness and relaxation.”
This trend stands out for its playful and imaginative elements, providing a sense of escape and comfort.
“Whimsical décor is characterised by its eclectic, imaginative, and often quirky nature. It embraces bold colours, unexpected patterns, and a mix of vintage and contemporary elements, creating spaces that are vibrant and full of character.
“However, creating a whimsical room involves more than just adding quirky decorations. It’s about embracing creativity, mixing styles, and playing with colours and textures,” says Geffen.
She offers the following tips for implementing whimsical décor effectively:
• Choose a focal point: start with a central piece that sets the tone for the room. This could be a statement piece of furniture, a bold piece of artwork or a vibrant rug. The focal point should be eye-catching and reflect the whimsical spirit you want to achieve.
• Be bold with colours: whimsical décor thrives on bold, vibrant colours so don’t be afraid to mix and match hues. Consider using a bright palette, incorporating cheerful yellows, playful pinks and lively blues. Balance these with neutral tones to avoid overwhelming the space.
• Mix patterns and textures: use a variety of patterns and textures to add depth and interest. Polka dots, stripes, florals, and geometric designs can coexist harmoniously in a whimsical setting. Mixing materials like plush fabrics, metallic finishes, and wooden accents can further enhance the eclectic vibe.
• Incorporate quirky accessories: look for unique and whimsical accessories that tell a story or evoke a sense of fun. This could
include vintage toys, eclectic art pieces, or whimsical clocks. Animal-shaped lamps, fairy lights, and unusual planters can add character and charm.
• Furniture with character: select furniture pieces that stand out for their design and personality. A brightly coloured sofa, an antique armchair with a unique pattern, or a coffee table with an interesting shape can all contribute to the whimsical atmosphere.
• Embrace nature: nature-inspired elements are often a key component of whimsical décor, and indoor plants, floral motifs, and nature-themed decorations can bring a fresh, organic feel to the space. Consider hanging planters, flower vases, or even a naturethemed mural.
• Create cosy nooks: designate small areas in your home as cozy nooks for reading, relaxing, or daydreaming. Fill these spaces with comfortable seating, soft colourful pillows, and whimsical décor elements like fairy lights or a dreamy canopy.
• Personalise with DIY projects: whimsical décor is perfect for DIY enthusiasts. Personalise your space with handmade crafts, upcycled furniture, or custom art. These personal touches add authenticity and uniqueness to your décor.
• Innovative lighting: creative lighting can enhance the whimsical feel of a room. Think chandeliers with a twist, string lights, or lamps with fun shapes and colours. Lighting can create magical ambiances that transform and elevate the mood of a space.
“In essence, the search for lightness and fun amidst difficult times is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and whimsical décor offers a refreshing and joyous alternative and antithesis to the austerity of our times.
“By embracing joy and creativity, people are finding ways to cope with, and rise above the challenges they face, crafting spaces and moments of happiness in their lives. So let your creativity flow and create a space that reflects your joy,” concludes Geffen. IB

wasting money on Five THINGS YOU SHOULD STOP
BY SENWELO TSIE
INFLATION HAS MOST OF US ON CHOKEHOLD, LIFE HAS BECOME EXPENSIVE AND HAS NEGATIVELY IMPACTED THE PURCHASING POWER FOR MANY OF US. TO MANAGE THE NEGATIVE IMPACT, WE NEED TO BE FRUGAL IN OUR SPENDING. THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS WE CAN STOP BUYING TO MAKE A SAVING AND HELP OUR FUNDS STRETCH FURTHER.
If it’s not broken, don’t upgrade it
Every year companies release irresistible new gadgets that are so tempting to purchase. We are constantly upgrading our gadgets even though the functionality of our current gadget is still good. We upgrade for different reasons, be it temporary gratification or to keep up with our peers. Unless you are planning to sell it again and make a saving from it, don’t buy a new one if the current one is still good.
2Cut down on subscriptions
Gym membership is one on the red flags. I know several people who have subscribed to a gym but never set foot there, which results in financial waste. The money could have been used for other beneficial projects. Also, being spoilt for choice with our TV subscriptions, we tend to pay for everything from Netflix and Apple TV to Showmax and Amazon Prime rather than deciding which one serves our needs best. Our phone subscriptions can also be costly if we are not selective in our choice of apps.
3Markdown doesn’t equal a need to buy
The word “Sale” has a psychological impact. We often rush to buy and even go beyond our budget during sale season because we feel we are saving. Are we really saving if we
have not budgeted for the stuff? Most of the time we even buy things we don’t really need and regret it later. The rule of thumb is “don’t buy it right there”, take the time to reflect before purchasing. If you wait one to three days before deciding, you will probably end up not buying it.
4
Frequent dining out
Spending on dining out can add up to a significant amount. While there is nothing wrong with having good food at a fancy restaurant for a celebratory event or occasional treat, it has become the norm nowadays to have meetings/dinners at restaurants, which can be pricey. Opting for more affordable choices like having a meeting online or social gatherings at home can help with the savings. For the 9-5 corporates we need to slow down on Uber Eats and pack our lunch.
5Expensive Gifts
Let’s be honest, we all want to express our care to our our loved ones when big milestones happen in their lives, and while it’s great to gift those you love, it’s not necessary to go over budget. A good gift is all about the sentiment, not the price tag! On the other hand, if you have been saving for the gift, then it’s worth the splurge. IB

quite the looker realme 12+ 5G
YEP, IT’S HERE! THE REALME 12+ 5G HAS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED IN SA. WITH ITS BLEND OF MODERN DESIGN AND ROBUST PERFORMANCE, IT AIMS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS. CAN I ADD, IT’S QUITE A LOOKER?
BY MARTIN HEADGER
The realme 12+ 5G impressed me with its luxury-inspired design, combining faux leather, metal, and glass. The Pioneer Green variant is a stand-out colour, making the device eye-catching. Its 6.67-inch FullHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate offers vibrant visuals, making gaming and streaming on the device an immersive experience.
for me was the triple camera setup, led by a 50MP Sony sensor with OIS, accompanied by an 8MP ultrawide and a 2MP macro lens. The main camera produces good images, and though it falls short of competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S23 in overall quality, it will be an upgrade from any mid-range device you currently have.
Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7050 chipset, paired with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, the realme 12+ 5G handles most tasks with ease, so you’ll have no trouble multitasking. And you won’t run out of juice too quickly either, with the 5000mAh battery, which can provide up to two days of use. What makes it a bonus is that it supports 67W fast charging.
Social media junkies, pay attention! A highlight
Summing up, the user experience of the realme 12+ 5G makes it a strong mid-range contender, offering solid design, performance, and display quality. However, I think it faces tough competition in its price range, particularly from more established brands.
It honestly does offer good value for money but may not be the top choice for those prioritising camera quality and software polish. IB

A WIDE RANGE OF OPTIONS
THE SOUTH AFRICAN ECONOMY HAS ITS UPS AND DOWNS, AS MANIFESTED IN THE PRICING POINTS IN OUR MAJOR CITIES. FOR INSTANCE, WHILE LOOKING AT STATS FROM NUMEO, THE TWELVE MARKETING INC. TEAM DISCOVERED SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE COST OF DINING OUT ACROSS OUR COUNTRY. THE RANGE OF PRICE POINTS FOR DINING AT INEXPENSIVE RESTAURANTS IN DURBAN, POLOKWANE, CAPE TOWN AND JOHANNESBURG REVEALED SEVERAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THOSE CITIES. LET US TAKE A MORE DETAILED LOOK AT THE PRICING OF THEIR RESTAURANT MENUS.
Durban
This city’s culinary journey has been influenced by the Indian, Zulu and colonial cultures and flavours, which makes for a rich and diverse dining experience. The cost of a meal in an inexpensive Durban restaurant is approximately R293. Although the city is known for its affordable street food and local eateries, this amount shows that dining out can be a moderate expense for
locals and tourists. One of the wonderful things that encourages outdoor dining is the city’s coastal charm and warm weather, perfect for social gatherings or family outings.
Polokwane
The capital city of Limpopo is known for its laidback and small-town feel compared with the busy, congested metropolitan areas. The cost of dining at an inexpensive restaurant there is as low as R217. This is explained by the general cost of living where the pace of life is slower. Eating out in Polokwane is a regular activity for many residents who can afford it, with the lower price making it accessible to more people who fall under lower tax brackets. Social dining is one way of fostering a sense of community around local eateries and cafes.
Cape Town
Dining with a view? Of course, Cape Town is loved for its stunning landscapes and cosmopolitan vibe. However, the lavish experience comes with a higher price tag. Numeo shows that dining out in the Mother City costs around R325 at an inexpensive restaurant. Cape Town’s reputation as a global tourist destination, and its fine dining and trendy eateries contribute to these higher prices. Even if the cost is high, the experience of dining with a view of Table Mountain or along the V&A Waterfront is worth every rand. Due to the high price, dining out becomes more of an occasional treat rather than a habit for many.
Johannesburg
South Africa’s largest city and economic powerhouse is home to a diverse range of dining options that shows its rich mix of cultures and their respective cuisines. The cost of an inexpensive restaurant meal is approximately R217, similar to Polokwane. Despite being a large metropolitan area, Johannesburg offers a lot of affordable dining options, which makes eating out convenient for a large chunk of its population. Affordability is important where everything is fast-paced and people have little time for home-cooked meals.
So next time you feel like skipping the cooking, treat yourself and your loved ones to an inexpensive dining experience, it is worth it. IB

corn TORTILLAS
Makes 55 tortillas
Ingredients
masa harina
4 teaspoons salt
6–8 cups warm water
Combine the masa harina and salt in a large mixing bowl. Stirring continuously with a wooden spoon, gradually add enough warm water until a dough begins to form. Then, using your hands, knead the dough for 2 minutes in the mixing bowl, shaping it into a smooth ball. The dough should feel springy and firm, like Playdough. If it feels too wet and is sticking to your hands, add a few extra tablespoons of masa harina. If it feels too dry and crackly, add in an extra tablespoon or two of warm water.
Weigh out the dough into 30g balls. Place each ball between two pieces of clingfilm in the centre of a tortilla press and, in one swift motion, press the top part down to flatten the dough. Alternatively, roll out each ball of dough with a rolling pin to 2–3mm thick and 12cm in diameter.
Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Once the pan is nice and hot, peel away the clingfilm and place the tortilla gently into the dry pan. Cook for about 40 seconds on each side, or until small brown spots or speckles begin to appear. The tortilla should puff up slightly.
Once the tortilla is cooked, place it on a plate and cover with a clean tea towel to keep it warm while you cook the remainder.
MARGARITA

• 25ml triple sec
• 25ml lime juice
• salt for the glass
Method
Shake all the ingredients together in a cracked ice shaker. Rub the rim of a cocktail glass with lime juice and coat the sides with salt. Shake off any excess salt, cut a slice of lime to garnish and voila!

BY MILOU STAUB
Fierce, Fun + Fab
marked Eli’s 95th birthday. As I reflect, I’m reminded of how incredibly fortunate I was to have had something that made saying goodbye so incredibly difficult.
Remember that one fine November day, when the universe decided to align my path with that of an elderly woman?
We met randomly at the mall; she fainted, the crowd gathered with cell phones, I jumped in; adrenaline was high, I gave orders left right and centre, the ambulance arrived, the little elderly lady refused to go. I offered to drive her home, she agreed, I stayed for tea and that was a decade ago. Who knew? Eli and I ended up as the ultimate dynamic duo: confidants, best friends, and each other’s personal cheerleaders!
A bittersweet
goodbye
Dear Self,
How lucky I am to have had something that makes saying goodbye so hard.
This October would have
Eli was born in 1929, yes, the same year as Anne Frank! It’s remarkable to think that someone born 54 years before me and I could enjoy each other’s company so much. We just clicked. Whether she needed me or I needed her more, it didn’t matter. We weren’t lonely, but our need for care, kindness, and empathy drew us together.
Eli had managed to charm her way into three marriages, while I’m still waiting for just one! It’s as if she had a secret recipe for finding husbands,
and I’m still trying to figure out the ingredients. Eli had some serious swag!
Our friendship was special; no topic was too hard to discuss, no detail too intimate. We compared our lives, discussing what I was experiencing and how it differed from her experiences at my age. Despite the 54-year gap, we shared hobbies, enjoyed walks, explored new restaurants, listened to music (1920s tunes are a thing, guys!)
Life is full of changes, and nothing lasts forever. It was really hard to see my best friend’s health decline over time. Watching her body weaken and eventually pass away was a deeply emotional experience.
Takeaway tip: not all connections need to be romantic. Cherish the relationships you form, no matter how unlikely they may seem. True friendship transcends age, background, and circumstance. Embrace every moment and learn from those who have walked different paths.
In loving memory of Eli Ferera, 13.10.29 - 3.06.24, who could be a bit of a handful when her patience ran thin, but was otherwise a total rockstar.
You’re never too old to be young, Milou IB
