They produce amazing hand-crafted paper products from gift boxes to wrapping and packaging paper. And it’s all environmentally friendly! Our paper is made from upcycled cotton off-cuts from textile factories and other eco-friendly raw materials like cotton rags and wastepaper. Not to mention, it’s FSC certified.

WHAT MAKES OUR PAPER BOXES & BAGS SPECIAL? The artisans at Get Paper Industry, majority of whom are women, sustainably handcraft their paper using cotton waste and water. The paper is then dried naturally in the sunshine. Each artisan is committed to working sustainably as they plant more trees than they use. In fact, they’ve already planted over 20,000 of them!

Editor’s Note It’s time to swop the coffee cups for cocktails or mocktails. You have earned it. Stock up on the hangover tablets – if you are 40 and over, remember, our recovery period is now days. Not hours. Get yourself a list of good TV series to stream. If you do plan to take a road trip, do not drink alcohol the night before. Some drivers are hasty and want to get to their destination, even if it means driving recklessly. Please be safe. If you see a small little roadside café in the Karoo or other parts of the country, please go and support them. This is the only time of year that they get to make some profit. In this issue, we are excited about our interview with Katlego Maboe who bounced back onto our television screens. He shares with us his spiritual journey since

IT’S AN EXCITING TIME OF YEAR FOR ME. LONG ROAD TRIPS. SEEING FAMILY AND FRIENDS. NO MORE PUSHING THOSE LAST-MINUTE SALES. COME ON, WE KNOW YOU DO IT! that very public breakup with an ex-girlfriend. If I were to single out a story, it would be the one about standup comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout who shared with us his walk of shame in a Filipino restaurant. Try not to laugh too loudly. Then we asked a few celebrities what they wanted for Christmas – and their wish list is very amusing at times. I feel sorry for Santa. From myself, and our editorial and sales team, we wish you a happy and safe festive season.

Should you wait an hour or so after you have had a meal, to swim or can you hit the waters immediately? ANSWER: You don’t have to wait if you are swimming for recreational purposes, says Dr. Lee-Ann Sulliman. If you want to swim for exercise, it is advised to wait as it will impact your performance to have a full stomach. But there has never been one case of drowning or death reported due to swimming on a full stomach.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

MISSING TRAVEL BUDDY

me with a birthday gift: a twoweek holiday in Seychelles. I was entrusted with our passports, which I carefully placed in my bag inside the cupboard in our room. On the last day of our stay, I noticed our passports were gone. With flights ready for boarding, we rushed to the airport to inform the airline and report the loss to the local police. Their advice was to contact our embassy.

My friend and I visited Amsterdam’s famous coffee shops and spent a significant amount of time there indulging in its offerings. Afterward, we had to make our way to the floating palace for dinner. One moment my friend was walking next to me and the next minute, he was gone. I’m not sure which of the two of us was more high but that obviously played a role in us wandering off in different directions. Despite being high, we both still managed to walk in the right direction of the floating palace. As I arrived at the area close to the palace, I saw a guy bending over and tying his shoelaces. It looked like my friend. I walked closer. It was. I was glad to see him, and we simply continued walking to dinner as if nothing had happened. Garth Temmers, Cape Town

STRANDED IN SEYCHELLES

My partner, Andrew, surprised

The situation was nothing short of panic as I had an important event to attend in South Africa. The Embassy explained it would take up to 48 hours to obtain an emergency travel document. Miraculously, within 24 hours, we had our documents and were able to travel to South Africa just in time for my event. Candice B, Johannesburg

CAN’T FLY WITH LUGGAGE

My husband Fred and I recently boarded a flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg to catch a connecting to Mauritius where we were going to celebrate our 40th anniversary. First, the plane arrived late at OR Tambo. However, we managed to make it to the check-in counter, although the check-in for our luggage had already closed. We could fly but not with our luggage. I looked around and saw a couple standing, waiting for a cancellation. I asked if they

could take our luggage. Fred and I opened our luggage and started grabbing our high-blood pressure tablets, multivitamins, and two shirts and started running to the gates. We arrived in Mauritius with only our hand luggage. The couple had driven to the agency we used to book and delivered our luggage there. Three days later, our luggage was delivered to our hotel. Johene van Wyk, Cape Town

BOLIVIA’S ROAD OF DEATH

My husband, Bryan, and I went to South America and took the most terrifying journey from La Paz, Bolivia’s capital, to Rurrenabaque. We took an overloaded bus carrying passengers AND chickens along a dirt road, known as Death Road, with a sheer cliff, which starts at 2 400m in altitude and ends at 1 200m. Death Road is a single carriageway with buses travelling both ways. They actually reverse (on the CLIFF) to get past each other! The bus tilted so much that luggage fell out and I had to hold myself up by firmly planting my leg against the wall of the bus. Bryan just fell asleep; I think it was the only way his body could cope with the terror! Because it is the only road in and out, we had to repeat the terror trip all over again when we left. HOW GOT HIS SMILE BACK

COVER FEATURE

FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, TV HOST AND SINGER KATLEGO MABOE HAD INTIMATE DETAILS OF HIS RELATIONSHIP SPLASHED ALL OVER THE TABLOIDS. HE DELETED HIS SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS AND FOCUSED ON FEEDING HIS SOUL AND CHANNELLING ALL HIS ENERGY INTO THE ONE THING THAT MATTERED TO HIM MOST – HIS SON. TODAY, HE IS SITTING DOWN WITH INBOUND SA EDITOR GAVIN PRINS , A NEW PERSON FULL OF JOKES, AND ENERGY, AND DOING THE ONE THING HE MISSED MOST, SMILING.

I

t seems the SABC game show Deal or No Deal was just what Katlego Maboe (37) or Kat as he is known in the industry, needed to smile again.

“Gosh, I looked at myself the other day and compared pictures of me now and how I looked the past few months. I am smiling again,” he tells me. And then: “Hey! What is this? Oprah? This is deep. I thought you said this was going to be a FUN interview,” he says laughing. Our interview is via Skype as he sits in a hotel room at the Blaauwberg Beach Hotel in Cape Town. His skin looks radiant. He doesn’t use many products he says. “I use face wash and moisturise. Nothing special.” He misses Expresso Show after taking time off the show for two years to deal privately with the negative publicity. “I remember a time when Michael Mol played a trick on me. One day he went to change my script. I started reading about a Russian play called ‘You Son of a ..’ but fortunately did not say the last word. There was also a time I forgot I was live on air and started talking to the director. It was crazy.”

How to deal with bullies on social media

We are not here to talk about his private life but instead about how he learned to deal with bullies on social media. “I have come to realise that people post negative things about you so THEY can trend. You have to take these comments where it comes from.

When I was going through my dip, I just took a break from social media. For 9 months.” But when he bounced back, he took to TikTok and started posting videos of him doing what he loves to do – singing. “I sang a song by Nigerian artist Ayra Starr. It is my most viewed video. And she commented on it. I was so shocked.” He also drew strength from the support he got from his mother, Beauty.

I ALIGN ALL MY DECISIONS AROUND MY SON “She went through a similar situation I went through, and she saw herself in me.” We then switch to his son, Phoenix. I can tell he is a proud daddy because his smile just became bigger. “I align all my decisions around my son. Man, he is my everything.” And the biggest life lesson learned? “I have stopped being a people pleaser. I have also become unapologetically honest. My YES is my YES.” December 2023 / INBOUNDSA 17

Kat is excited about 2024…

“Hopefully, I get to give more money away on Deal or No Deal. I want to make more people’s dreams come true. I want to see the show grow.” He also wants to develop his music. He misses the acapella band, Flip-A-Coin, that he was part of years ago. “We are constantly talking about a reunion, but the members are so far spread across the globe. The idea of a reunion is not going to happen anytime soon. But you never know.” For now, he focuses on being the best dad, his job as a TV host, and Ambassador for Hope Cape Town – an organisation that seeks to improve the

quality of life of children, youth, and families affected by HIV. We’re about to wrap up the interview when InBound SA editorial assistant, Maurisha Niewenhuys, who is with him in the room, jumps in. “What would you like for Christmas?” He ponders and then shouts: “Wisdom. I want to make wise decisions.” That big smile again. Kat has accomplished such amazing things in life that could not have been done without wisdom. But one thing is certain: his energy is infectious and a person you want to invite for dinner one day. IB

Plan ahead: Planning ahead is the secret sauce to ensuring your travels are as painfree as possible. Before you embark on your adventure, take some time to create a checklist of all your travel essentials. This checklist should include items like your passport, tickets, itinerary, and, of course, a basic first aid kit. Stay hydrated: Dehydration can be a silent troublemaker when it comes to discomfort while traveling. It can cause headaches, nausea and fatigue.1 To combat this, make sure to drink plenty of water while you’re on the move. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and aim to stay refreshed throughout your trip. Stretch your legs: Whether you’re on a longhaul flight or a road trip across the country, taking regular breaks to stretch your legs and get your blood flowing. Being in one position for an extended period can lead to stiffness and aches.2 Stand up, walk around, do some simple stretches, in fact, anything to keep your muscles engaged.

any travellers agree. The raw beauty of Bali, a province of Indonesia, boasts a myriad of volcanoes, crystalline beaches, diving, active nightlife, amazing waterfalls, and breathtaking views along most of its hiking trails. This seemed like the perfect destination for comedian and actor Schalk and his wife. “One year we were thinking about where we should go for our December holidays. Mica suggested Bali. The accommodation was wellpriced. The country is beautiful and does not have a lot of drunk Australians. And you don’t need a visa. We decided on Bali,” says Schalk. So, off they went to the Philippines. The flights were smooth and once in the city, they were in awe of its natural beauty. “We met this French woman, and she introduced us to a lot of people. Schalk says inside the restaurant, people were talking softly and eating with knives and forks. “At each table, you sommer had two knives and forks. It was a very respectable place. Usually, when we travel, we meet the odd South African, but I spotted none.” And then, shock! “I heard from another corner of the restaurant someone shouting my name. ‘Schalk’, he shouts. This is obviously someone who knows my work. The people around our table whom we had just met a couple of hours ago were confused because they didn’t know what I do for a living. “I tried to walk over to the guy and tried to get him to keep it down. But then he shouted ‘Schalk, waar is Susan se p**s?’ The guy was referring to one of the first jokes

Schalk told in his comedy about a Dutch class looking for a classmate’s (Susan’s) cat. “I quickly told him this was a respectable place and that he should not shout like he was doing. He then proceeded to tell me his name was Frikkie and he was from Stellenbosch. I have never met a Frikkie in my life. You start your jokes by saying ‘Frikkie walks into a bar..’ but never in real life.” But Schalk’s embarrassment did not end here. The next day, the couple boarded a ferry to another island.

Big mistake

“We had to get up early to be at the port at 5 am. It was still dark. People’s eyes were still red from the previous night’s party.” Schalk says usually when overseas, he looks for the food that he knows. “I do Western foods like pizza, but this time I decided to try the local foods,” he says. Big mistake! “The one minute, I was looking at the ocean, and the next, my tummy acted up and I needed to go. I literally ran to the men’s bathroom. There was no toilet paper. The situation was getting progressively more serious. So, I ran to the women’s bathroom. Still no toilet paper.” And that’s when Schalk had to do the walk of shame back into the restaurant. “I did a proper power walk, a clingy bum walk. The situation was reaching serious levels. I went back to the table to get my backpack. The only thing I could think to use was one of our books. I took it to the toilet.

A moral dilemma

“Amidst the drama unfolding, I now had to choose which of my or Mica’s books was going to suffer in the process. I was instantly confronted with a moral dilemma. Time was against me. I tore a page from her book and went about my business.” Schalk says he would recommend the Philippines. “You get value for money for the amount you pay to stay at hotels and guesthouses.” Yes, and just watch what you eat Schalk! SUN CARE ESSENTIALS

Summer skincare ESSENTIALS FOR THE SOUTH AFRICAN SUN

SUMMER IN SOUTH AFRICA BRINGS BRIGHT DAYS AND SCORCHING SUN, MAKING IT ESSENTIAL TO ADAPT YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY. SHIELDING YOUR SKIN FROM THE INTENSE UV RAYS AND KEEPING IT HYDRATED ARE PARAMOUNT DURING THESE MONTHS.

1. Sun protection

The African sun is beautiful but potent. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Don’t forget overlooked areas like ears, neck, and lips. Consider using a hat and sunglasses for added protection.

2. Lightweight hydration

Swap heavy creams for lighter, water-based moisturizers. Hydration is crucial, even in the heat, to keep your skin balanced. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid or glycerin that lock in moisture without feeling greasy.

3. Gentle cleansing

With increased sweating, cleanse your face twice daily to prevent clogged pores. Choose a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser to remove impurities without stripping natural oils. Exfoliate weekly to slough off dead skin cells and keep your complexion radiant.

4. Antioxidant boost

Combat free radicals caused by sun exposure with antioxidants like vitamin C and E. Serums or moisturizers enriched with these ingredients help repair and protect your skin from environmental damage.

5. Cooling mists and masks

Drink plenty of water to maintain hydration levels. Fresh fruits and vegetables high in water content, like watermelon and cucumber, can also contribute to your skin’s hydration.

7. After-sun care

In case of sunburn, soothe the skin with aloe vera gel or a moisturizer containing ingredients like chamomile or calendula. Avoid further sun exposure until the skin heals. IB

By embracing these skincare essentials, you’ll keep your skin healthy, glowing, and protected throughout the South African summer. Remember, consistency is key to achieving and maintaining healthy skin, no matter the season.

Keep a facial mist handy for an instant refresher on hot days. Consider using soothing masks containing aloe vera or cucumber to calm and hydrate sun-stressed skin.

THE GLAM GURU’S

SUMMER

SKIN TIPS IF YOUR SKIN REACTS TO A PRODUCT, STOP USING IT IMMEDIATELY. YOUR SKIN IS NOT GOING TO GET USED TO A PRODUCT, SAYS STYLIST AND CONSULTANT, HANNON BOTHMA, ALSO KNOWN AS “THE GLAM GURU”.

Is there a moisturiser that is matt and doesn’t make your face shiny, has an SPF15 and will nourish our skin?

Most moisturisers contain mineral and/or essential oils. In summer our skin naturally produces more sebum (oil) and so we start looking shiny.

Sometimes the skin can react negatively to a face cream. Do you immediately stop using it or do you wait a few days to see if it does eventually work? If your skin reacts, it means your skin does not like the product or an ingredient in the product. Stop using it immediately and contact the beauty specialist that recommended the product to you.

Which basic ingredients should we avoid mixing and matching?

It is more a case of what ingredients to avoid with certain skin types or skin care challenges. For instance, dry skin types should avoid kaolin as it absorbs moisture and oil from the skin, resulting in the skin becoming even dryer and dehydrated. People with eczema should avoid products containing alpha-hydroxy (fruit) acids. IB

Some of us just don’t know what the heck a “balanced diet” or “everything in moderation” means. Is it 80/20, where we get to eat cake 20% of the time, or is it more of a 50/50 approach? Also, while we’re at it, why is it that when we work so hard to achieve a health-related goal, the Jennies in our lives suddenly emerge with ‘sage’ advice that doesn’t feel encouraging at all? But I digress. You, my dear reader, have clearly found a way to overcome the Jennies in your life (oh, and apologies for the choice of Jenny, but I think Karen has had quite a year!). FITNESS

I LOST NEARLY 25KG AND 30% BODY FAT IN MY FIRST FITNESS CHALLENGE slightly anxious that perhaps you may lose it all and end up right back where you started. Fear not! I, too, have been there, multiple times, in fact. Not only have I been there personally, having lost nearly 25kg and 30% body fat in my first fitness challenge, but as a wellness coach, I have also helped multiple people over the years navigate this “please-God-do-not-let-me-go-back” territory. As the founder of LiveFit with Stace and GUTFit™, holistic approaches to fitness and gut health, my coaching model centres on four pillars: THINK, EAT, MOVE, TRACK™, and we’ll use this framework to get you through the summer holidays, having maintained the body and habits that you’ve worked so hard to achieve.

The maintenance plan

Maintain Your THINKing! We all know that what we think, we become, but very often, this notion makes theoretical and intellectual sense, with very little heart sense. By heart sense, I mean to say we feel it; it has become part of the fabric of who we are and how we operate subconsciously. After a journey like a fitness or health challenge, we can still harbour mindsets and beliefs that do not serve us. To implement this, use the four-point journalling daily method. Grab a journal and answer the following four questions in bullet points: 1. What are the four things I’m grateful for today? 2. What are the mindsets or beliefs that I feel are still holding me back? 3. What can I actively do to address these mindsets? 4. What is my goal for this week?

Maintain Your EATing! This will likely be the most challenging goal to maintain, especially if working on your thinking around food and eating has not been part of your journey to date. If your approach to achieving your goal is very stringent or rigid, friction may arise at the thought of needing to remain strict to maintain your outcomes, yet at the same time wanting to let go a little. You’re thinking of braais and nights out to restaurants. To implement this, use four strategies: 1. Maintain 80% of what worked for you: Maintain the bulk of the strategy you used to reach your goal while on holiday. Try to keep the majority of your meals according to your current plan and allow for 20% leeway for a few meals. 2. Decide on some rules: Rules create the space for freedom. Decide on the rules you will adhere to as a couple, as a family, or for yourself. For example, one rule could be that you share desserts; refrain from ordering your own dessert when eating out, and share it with a friend or your spouse. 3. Stay hydrated: We tend to consume more alcohol over the festive period, which leads to drinking less water and hydrating fluids. This can lead to cravings for the very foods you’re trying to reduce. Use point #2 to make yourself a rule: you cannot have your first alcoholic drink unless you’ve had 80% of your water intake for the day. 4. Consider intermittent fasting or timerestricted eating: Fasting has its place, and although I see many of my clients getting it wrong, where I see it shining is over travel and vacation periods. A good approach is 14:10; have breakfast around 9am and have your last meal at 7pm and adjust accordingly. Maintain MOVEment: Four Approaches: Commit to moving every day. Note that I did not say commit to working out every day or exercising every day; I said move every day. If you would normally train four or five days a week, cut back to three. Aim for full-body workouts at a medium to high effort or intensity level, body weight, or, where you have access to a gym, implement resistance training. But go for a 20-40 min walk daily. This can be easy to do when traveling in warm regions and many cities around the world. IB December 2023 / INBOUNDSA 39

WELLNESS

DO YOU HIT THE SNOOZE BUTTON MULTIPLE TIMES AS YOU STRUGGLE TO START YOUR DAY? EMBRACING THE LIFESTYLE OF A MORNING PERSON CAN TRANSFORM YOUR PRODUCTIVITY, MOOD, AND OVERALL WELL-BEING. LIFE COACH, ZAYTOUN BHYAT, GIVES US PRACTICAL TIPS AND STRATEGIES TO HELP YOU BECOME A MORNING PERSON AND MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR MORNINGS.

1. Gradual adjustment easing in

Becoming a morning person doesn’t happen overnight. Start by gradually adjusting your sleep schedule. Set a consistent bedtime and wake-up time, allowing your body to adapt to the new routine. Gradually move your bedtime and wake-up time earlier by 15 minutes every few days until you reach your desired schedule. This approach will make the transition smoother and help your body adjust to the changes.

weekends. Incorporate activities that energise and motivate you, such as exercise, stretching, journaling, or meditation. Fuel your body with a nutritious breakfast and hydrate yourself with water or herbal tea. Allow yourself enough time to get ready without rushing, reducing stress, and setting a positive tone for the day.

4. Harness the power of light

Establishing and implementing a relaxing bedtime routine is crucial for quality sleep and waking up refreshed.

Light plays a significant role in regulating our internal clock. Open your curtains or blinds to let natural light into your bedroom as soon as you wake up. If natural light is limited, consider investing in a light therapy lamp, which mimics the effects of sunlight.

Disconnect from electronic devices at least one hour before bed to reduce stimulation. Engage in calming activities such as reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practicing meditation.

Exposure to light in the morning helps signal to your body that it’s time to wake up, boosting alertness and improving your overall sleep-wake cycle as well as productivity.

Create a sleep-friendly environment by ensuring your bedroom is dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature. Experiment with calming scents, like lavender or chamomile to promote a more peaceful sleep.

5. Stay consistent

2. Create a calming bedtime routine

3. Optimise your morning routine

A well-structured morning routine can set the tone for the rest of your day. Start by waking up at the same time every day, even on

Consistency is the key to maintaining a morning routine. Practice going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This consistency helps regulate your body’s internal clock, making it easier to wake up feeling refreshed. Once you establish a routine, stick to it as much as possible, and soon enough, waking up early will become second nature. IB December 2023 / INBOUNDSA 45

uring August this year, I visited Brazil for work, São Paulo to be more exact, but also managed to add a bit of sightseeing to the trip.

Before I go any further, if you’re thinking of visiting Brazil, make sure you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination, or else you won’t get further than Brazil’s airport!

São Paulo is massive, the capital of Brazil’s largest state and home to more than 41 million people. In fact, it is the largest city in South America and the southern hemisphere. The minute I landed I could feel the air frizz with vibrancy, even at 3 am, as people of every nationality teemed through the arrival halls. The city is a giant melting pot of cultures, and

immigrant communities from Japan, Italy, and Portugal. A fact I found fascinating, and which is very apparent, is that São Paulo has the largest Japanese community outside of Japan! I had organised a tour guide to explore the city, thank goodness, and what a great choice that turned out to be. Roberto speaks English, which may not seem to be a “big thing”, but it is in a country where very few locals speak it! Portuguese is the language of São Paulo, but it’s also a very specific Portuguese only spoken in South America. So, if you’re planning to use Duolingo to hone your Portuguese skills before visiting Brazil, make sure you learn the correct version! I explored Batman Alley with Roberto, an area that epitomises the bold colours and vitality of Brazil. This lengthy stretch of high-walled residences in the suburb of Vila Madalena showcases some of the most impressive street art and graffiti, and virtually no surface is left untouched. Then it was on to Parque Ibirapuera, one of Latin America’s largest urban parks. Its iconic importance to São Paulo is often internationally comparable to that of Central Park in New York City. Like everything worthwhile visiting in the city, it is huge! It was a Sunday, so there were hordes of locals jogging, walking, having a picnic and just relaxing. It’s been described as “a green oasis at the heart of a concrete jungle”, and it was a welcome relief for me to stretch my legs after the long-haul flight. Roberto told me while we were walking that São Paulo also hosts the world’s largest LGBTQ+ Pride parade, drawing millions of followers each year.

THE CITY BOASTS A UNIQUE BLEND OF ARCHITECTURAL MARVELS AND CULTURAL HERITAGE. Having a local guide was wonderful; he was very flexible about what we did on the tour, so I also managed to visit the Monument to the Bandeiras, and the Japanese ‘suburbs’ of Liberdade – and felt like I had travelled to Japan without leaving São Paulo! A highlight of the tour was our visit to the Municipal Market of Sao Paulo. The historic building houses stalls of rare fruits, vegetables, dairy products, cured meat of every description and a ‘food court’. The meals offered here are incredibly diverse and delicious, but there is a lot to choose from. Thank goodness for Roberto who ordered for us both! Exploring Sao Paulo’s historic sites is a captivating journey through Brazil’s rich past. The city boasts a unique blend of architectural marvels and cultural heritage. As I wandered through the cobbled streets of Batman Alley and through the halls of the Municipal Market, I felt a deep connection to the city. The vibrant energy of this metropolis is beautifully complemented by its historic gems, making it a destination that truly bridges the past and present. IB

FUN FACT Brazil has 4 time zones. The reason for this is because it is so big there is a big difference in when the sun sets across the country.

ADVENTURE

FROM TERROR TO

exhilaration IN SECONDS

A ZIPLINE ADVENTURE

60 INBOUNDSA / December 2023

ADVENTURE

YOU STAND ON A PLATFORM BOLTED TO THE MOUNTAINSIDE 80 METRES ABOVE THE GROUND. YOUR MIND FORGETS ABOUT THE HARNESS, SAFETY LINE, AND BRAKING SYSTEM, AND YOUR BODY INSTINCTIVELY SCREAMS NO!

T

BY DI BROWN he guide reminds you to assume a sitting position, shows you where to place each hand, gives you a thumbs up, and pushes you into the void.

Your body and mind switch gears from terror to exhilaration in seconds. All too soon, the first slide is done. You land, you live, and you can’t stop grinning as you eagerly await the next one. This adventure in nature starts with a safety briefing and kitting up in your harness, helmet, and hairnet. Then you have an “African massage” during the 40-minute 4x4 drive up through the forests and fynbos, deep into the mountains. The ziplining course comprises 11 slides, some over 300m long, and a unique suspension bridge constructed between a narrow sandstone ravine, above a spectacular double waterfall. The scenery is spectacular in the true sense of the word. Located within the Cape Floral Kingdom World Heritage Site, the zipline course traverses mountains, rivers, and valleys covered in fynbos, which thrives thanks to the 3 000mm of annual rain that soaks the land. The mountains peak at 1 590 m above sea level, and while summers are hot and dry, winters can be cold at altitude, with snow falling at least once a year. As you relax into the adventure, you begin to appreciate this pristine landscape as you glide through the air or wait on the platforms. Marvel at the tannin-coloured rivers, waterfalls, and rock pools way below you, and the birds of prey soaring on the thermals above you. Dew drops

glisten on tiny ferns growing in the rock face, and lizards sun themselves on the warm stone.

Notes to the nervous

The course is 100% safe. Civil engineers designed it, the highly trained staff check it daily, and it has an annual engineering safety audit. The staff are skilled, encouraging and want you to have fun. If your bravery deserts you after the first two slides, you can opt out and hike back to the vehicle. After the third slide, you are committed for the duration of the course. If you are apprehensive, consider a tandem tour, where you will be strapped to a guide who controls everything, leaving you free to enjoy the view. The cost is R995 per person and includes all safety gear. The conservation levy is R100. IB For more information, visit www.capecanopytour.co.za.

Martyn Bullard DESIGNER TO THE STARS

64 INBOUNDSA / December 2023

DÉCOR

MARTYN LAWRENCE BULLARD HAS BEEN DESIGNING A-LISTER HOMES FOR YEARS. IN HIS NEW BOOK, STAR STYLE: INTERIORS OF MARTYN LAWRENCE BULLARD, HE SHARES INSIGHTS INTO THE HOMES OF CHER, SIR ELTON JOHN, SOME OF THE KARDASHIANS AND EVEN RUPAUL. HE SPOKE TO INBOUND SA EDITOR GAVIN PRINS ABOUT CURRENT HOMES HE IS DESIGNING.

C

ongrats on your new book! Which celebrity home are you currently working on?

Thanks. I’m currently working on a new home in Palm Beach for Sylvester Stallone and his wife Jennifer Flavin. I am also working on an LA estate for rock star Machine Gun Kelly, a Mustique beach compound for Tommy Hilfiger and a mid-century beach house for actress Ellen Pompeo, along with the Four Seasons residences in Los Angeles and a chain of restaurants for a master chef, as well as fashion boutique concepts for a major design brand.

Wow, that’s quite a lot. What is it like working for celebrities? The celebrities are just like the rest of us. They love their homes and want to personalize them

and make a nest for themselves and their families. The only difference is, unlike the rest of us, they need more privacy and security. Leading a public life can be difficult, so home must be a sanctuary; a place where all your needs are catered to. Customization has its greatest power in formulating a look that’s deeply personal, works for all the family needs but also services the requirements of their careers and the many facets that holds.

You design all kinds of spaces. Which is your favourite?

Private homes are the favourite part of my career as I am designing a space that fits a personality; that is shaped so very exclusively for that client and becomes a magical expression of them

DÉCOR

Tommy Hilfiger’s home

produced by using all my design skills; a perfect cocktail of personality and performance. Hotels are also a wondrous aspect to my design career. A hotel is a space that is crafted to bring fantasy, design that is breathtaking, luxurious, and fanciful. It must give you a sense of place whilst transporting your senses, leaving a memory that is beautiful and draws you back. I love all my projects for different reasons, but my current favourite must be RuPaul’s wild and wonderful house. When you get to design for the world’s most famous drag queen, you know you can go wild with dramatic abandon. And that’s what we did, culminating in a magnificent home that captures the essence of who he is and what a spectacular career he has achieved. It’s a centre stage for him to shine in!

What does designing entail?

My design process is very much about understanding the clients’ needs and decorative desires. It’s about getting to know them, how they live, how they want to live and what gives them joy. Once I understand all the elements that they want for their dream home or project, I start to piece it together to make a truly special and oneoff interior that is customized to the most minute details.

66 INBOUNDSA / December 2023

What are the trendy colours these days?

I love green, in all shades. It’s a beautiful colour, a tone that is so easy to mix with all other colours, and always provides a fresh and luxuriant palette. As I love natural fibres and textures, I’m also a huge proponent of linen, especially for drapery. The natural texture of the fabric and the way light reflects from its surface is at once spellbinding and timeless.

Finally, how do you keep the creative juices flowing? I keep myself fresh by constantly being open to learn new things, to investigate every trend and design that comes on the market, to travel as much as possible, see new things, meet new people, and experience new surroundings, smells, food, and ambience. The day we stop being open to learning is the day our inspiration dies, and I won’t stop learning until the day I die! IB

HAVE A HALF A MILLION RAND STASHED SOMEWHERE? THAT IS ROUGHLY HOW MUCH TIMESHARE AT SUN CITY’S BRAND-NEW LUXURY FOUR AND THREE-BEDROOM VILLAS, LEFIKA, COULD COST YOU. THE NEW DEVELOPMENT WAS LAUNCHED LAST MONTH AND COST THE RESORT ABOUT R295 MILLION TO BUILD. INBOUND SA EDITOR GAVIN PRINS WAS INVITED TO THE SOD TURNING OF THE VILLAS.

T

he group brought in two of South Africa’s most creative designers for the exterior and interior of the villas, Charlotte Mosito, founder and owner of CPKM Services and Lila Gouws, Architectural Team Manager, Boogertman + Partners.

Charlotte Mosito ended up becoming the architect for Lefika when she responded to an EOI put out by Sun City.

“I made compliance and to cut a long story short, here we are today, as a principal contractor for the Lefika reception and recreational area.” Lila Gouws landed the project when the Vacation Club Development at Sun City was instigated as an architectural competition in 2022, between Boogertman + Partners and two other companies who were invited to take part. Boogertman + Partners were awarded the contract for the Lefika Villas development. Mosito and her team were responsible for bringing the reception and recreational area concept to life and constructing according to design specifications received and designed by Boogertman + Partners, as per the client’s vision. “Some of the biggest challenges along the way were having to juggle cash flow, cost overruns, disappointment by suppliers on the very day we expected delivery and unforeseen delays,” says Mosito. Inspiration came from the Sun City resort. “The Sun City Resort on its own is just magnificent. Having been tasked with the construction of the Lefika Villas’ reception and recreational area, it was quite clear what was expected of us – our surroundings kept us in check. Construction is usually a job associated with men, but Mosito and her fellow female colleagues say that there are more women in construction nowadays, and that women are starting to “take up and own the space, which is beautiful to watch”.

A home away from home

Mosito believes people should invest in timeshare as a home away from home. “It is a luxurious vacation home away from the

city. It offers luxury living – you have your own space, you have your own garden, in your own private unit and you are not confined to hotel living, but you still find yourself within a five-star natural resort, which doesn’t get better than that. Opulent living, lavish comfort, and luxury,” she adds.

Interior design

Lila Gouws, Architectural Team Manager, Boogertman + Partners says that the interior design of the villas was a collaboration between the various design disciplines (architects, interior designers, and landscape architects) to realise the beautiful vision of Sun International. “The team worked very closely together to create a wholistic concept that could be carried through all design aspects of the project – from the interior colour scheme to the plants and landscaping,” she explains. “The idea of Genius Loci (notion of place) was a main driving factor; the project pulled a lot of inspiration from the site itself. The thick stone walls constructed from stone harvested on the site itself, pays homage to the adjacent stone walled Itlholanoga ‘lost city’ heritage site. “Even the Lefika brand itself carries this thread through as ‘Lefika’ means ‘stone’ in the local Setswana language.” Gouws says the local fauna and flora were studied at the onset of the project. “Indigenous flowering plants and stones, amongst other elements, were studied to extract a truly contextual colour palette which feels true to the site. A custom wallpaper was specially designed by our team by incorporating abstracted graphics of local fauna and flora (aloe flowers) over a backdrop of the local Pilanesberg mountain range with a subtle watermark overlay of the Lefika brand’s stone pattern to create a one-of-a-kind feature wall.”

Bespoke furniture pieces and décor items from local craftspeople No less attention was given to the choice of furnishing.

“Many other bespoke furniture pieces and décor items were developed by our team in December 2023 / INBOUNDSA 71

PROPERTY

collaboration with local craftspeople, furniture manufacturers and local artists – these include custom beaded chandelier and pendant lights manufactured by Mash-T Design Studio, blown glass lamp shades by Glassforming Academy, custom floating pool bean bag pool pillows by Little Beanbag Co. and purpose made concrete tables by Concrete Corporation,” says Gouws. She adds that the full inclusive, multifaceted self-catering villas cater for all holidaymaker types, from the family member who wants to relax in privacy, to the kids and teens who want excitement and entertainment. There are also two mobility-impaired units which cater for family members who are less mobile or in wheelchairs.

Site itself was both the magic ingredient and the biggest challenge Gouws says that some of the obstacles she and her team faced included the densely vegetated site.

“The site itself was both the magic ingredient in the development as well as the biggest challenge. The densely vegetated site with steep slopes and many rocks outcrops, especially at the 4-bedroom

72 INBOUNDSA / December 2023

units, created the opportunity for a magnificent product, but it also posed many challenges. “The team physically plotted all the feature elements like large trees, beautiful views and rock formations on a geographic location system, which then informed the design. The units had to be carefully arranged on site to retain and protect all of these elements whilst achieving the best views possible. Vehicular access to all the units was also a significant challenge due to the steep slopes,” she adds. IB

HIS WORK OFFERS A UNIQUE LENS INTO THE WORLD AROUND US, OFFERING FRESH INSIGHTS AND NEW WAYS OF SEEING THE FAMILIAR. INBOUND SA WRITER KETSIA MAKOLA SPOKE TO HIM ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND HIS WORK.

What inspired you to pursue a career in art, especially while studying graphic design? My inspiration started when I left high school. I was doing my first year of IT and I saw the potential in the art I was doing. My art started making some money that allowed me to buy more materials. The inspiration was my growth.

How do you balance your academic studies in graphic design with your professional art projects for local and international clients?

My academics have taken a toll because I am so involved with my art. Before it was easier, but now it’s difficult because of my workload. But I do plan to be successful at both.

Can you share a favourite project where you had the opportunity to merge your graphic design skills with your artistic talents?

Most of the art I have done use graphic design to a certain extent because of the software I have

74 INBOUNDSA / December 2023

ART

learnt. For example, Adobe Photoshop helped me to edit my images, making them clearer for me to use to paint.

What are some key differences you’ve noticed in creating art for local clients versus international clients?

Honestly, it’s all the same for me, but my clients from overseas mostly get art that has nothing to do with them, just their interests. Also, the delivery to overseas and other neighbouring countries costs an arm and a leg.

How do you stay creatively motivated and updated with the latest trends in both graphic design and art?

Thank goodness my art doesn’t need me to follow trends. I just do what I feel at the moment and I’m just happy that other people resonate with it.

How did you turn your hobby into a successful business?

For me to be able to turn what I do into a career, I had to be completely focused and consider myself a business, in every aspect. I monitor how I spend my time and invest it where I must. I would urge people who want to follow a similar path to me to keep focused because life is full of distractions and these distractions are very entertaining and can be innocent but dangerous to your time. Once you value your time you spend it properly. IB December 2023 / INBOUNDSA 75

“I felt rejected by my mother. I judge women who put men first over their own children. A man who truly loves you will not only commit to you, but he will also take you and your ‘baggage’”, she says. “It is important for us as parents to raise selfassured girls whose self-esteem is not destroyed by circumstances.” I can tell this is an unresolved issue and decide to move on to her schooling. “I was in Grade 3. I needed pocket money, so I started selling lollipops and sweets under my desk in the classroom,” she says. “There were many times the teacher came and confiscated my sweets. But they knew how we struggled and always gave it back after the lesson. During that time of my life we lived on butter and bread. Polony and cheese were a luxury and not something we were used to. flavours of her gin liqueur bottles and then the bit that gets us excited – the popcorn. She used Marula Cheesecake Passion liqueur to infuse salted caramel onto the popcorn. Is your mouth watering yet? “And don’t worry about getting too tipsy. I had half a packet, and I was fine. Only thing is, it is sweet. But otherwise, great,” she says. She also makes alcoholic ice creams and frozen yoghurt with the same liqueur.

I JUDGE WOMEN WHO PUT MEN FIRST OVER THEIR OWN CHILDREN. As we turn to discussion about how her entrepreneurial skill started, things turn deep. Sonia grew up in Pimville, Soweto, in a twobedroom, four roomed house she lived in with her grandparents and (at one stage) 16 other cousins. “My mom fell pregnant when she was 16. My dad was 17 and died when I was just 6 weeks old. My mom married my stepdad a few years later and I was left in the care of my maternal grandparents.

“One time, my mother was home to visit and didn’t have taxi money. I gave her money from the cash I made selling lollipops,” says Sonia, proudly.

So much more than just a beautiful face

Sonia was just 11 years old when she entered her first beauty pageant. Soon, she was the M-NET face of Africa finalist which opened a lot of international doors for her. She entered Miss SA and came third (second runner-up). But Sonia is so much more than just a pretty face. She has a B. Com degree in Marketing and Business Management. Years later, she would marry and have two boys. Life in the limelight has proved challenging. A social media post she made in November last year led to some people whispering “cheesecake” whenever she was out and about. Sonia says this is the reason she decided to turn her “cheesecake” into a business. Cheeky. But it worked. Sonia’s cheesecake empire is growing. Next up? She wants to expand the business and find more stockists. Our time is up! I get up. She stays sitting. Confusion. “My next meeting is also here.” We smile. IB December 2023 / INBOUNDSA 79

UNIQUE CAREERS

THE PENGUIN WHISPERER

MEET THE MAN WHO TALKS TO

penguins

TO US, THEY ARE A GROUP OF AQUATIC FLIGHTLESS BIRDS WHO SPEND HALF THEIR LIVES ON LAND AND THE OTHER IN THE SEA. BUT TO XOLANI LAWU, THEY ARE UNIQUE ANIMALS WHERE “MALES” STEAL THE “WIVES” OF OTHER “MALES” AND THEN GET INTO HUGE FIGHTS. HOW DOES HE KNOWS THIS? BECAUSE HE TALKS TO PENGUINS, XOLANI TELLS INBOUND SA WRITER KETSIA MALOKA.

What is a penguin whisperer?

Is someone that communicates with penguins. I know them. I understand them. I have names for all of them. Even though they are stubborn, they listen to me.

How did you end up in this job?

I was a tour guide in St Francis Bay and educated tourists about the marine life in the area. I then started looking after penguins who had been caught in oil spills. Initially, they were very angry and sore because the oil burned them. But I was surprised at how quickly they learned that I was trying to help them.

How important is it to highlight awareness about penguins?

Tell us something about penguins that we don’t know. Penguins will remind you that they are not your friend. They don’t want hugs. If you give them fish, they will love you. But take the fish away and they will get angry.

In captivity, they don’t follow rules. You can’t easily tell the difference between male and female penguins. They also like to cause a lot of drama within the penguin community. They have relationships and steal each other’s ‘girlfriends;’ we have a penguin that has four girlfriends!

It is very important that we protect penguins. We are losing around 90 penguins a week because of starvation.

They are also very picky; when I feed them fish, they don’t want broken or soft fish. They also like to fight amongst each other over their shelters.

Do you talk to penguins?

Having penguins in the wild is important for many reasons, for instance, they ‘herd’ sardines from the bottom of the oceans and bring them up to the surface. IB

Yes, I do! You may laugh, but I warn them by saying, “If you bite me, I will not feed you for three days.” They obey!

your smartphone remains rock-steady while capturing photos and videos. It is your go-to device for preserving fast-paced action, whether you are globe-trotting with mates, exploring the city, or witnessing a child’s first sporting event. In contrast to the electronic image stabilisation found in smartphones, which may falter during dynamic movements and low-light scenarios, the motorised stabilisation of the Osmo Mobile 6 guarantees clarity in every frame.

In the blink of an eye

In the world of photography, moments can be fleeting. DJI recognises this, and hence, they have introduced the Quick Launch feature for iPhone users with the Osmo Mobile 6. Unfolding the device and attaching your iPhone triggers the Mimo app instantly, significantly reducing the time required for preparation. You can transition from pocket to shooting mode three times faster than with previous models, ensuring that you never miss a shot.

Stay locked on

The Osmo Mobile 6 elevates tracking to a whole new level with ActiveTrack 5.0, offering stable tracking at longer distances while enabling the front camera to track subjects even when they pivot or spin. Whether you are camping, travelling, or capturing street scenes, your footage takes on a captivating narrative with the gimbal ensuring your subject remains the focal point.

Intuitive control

Switching between the Osmo Mobile 6’s four gimbal modes has never been simpler. The built-in status panel and Mode button fast-track checking the battery level and selecting the perfect mode for your shot: 1. Follow: Ideal for shooting upwards, downwards, or diagonally. 2. Tilt Lock: Perfect for horizontal shots or moving around a subject. 3. FPV (First Person View): Excellent for dynamic filming of still subjects like landmarks or statues. 4. SpinShot: Create dynamic footage with ease, including push, pull, and high-angle shots.

Control at your fingertips

The Osmo Mobile 6 introduces the side wheel, enabling you to effortlessly control zoom and focus. This smooth, responsive wheel allows you to adjust the focal length for flexible compositions and achieve a cinematic look with manual focus control.

Intelligent features

To enhance your content creation, the Osmo Mobile 6 includes intelligent features such as Timelapse, DynamicZoom, Gesture Control, Panorama, and Story Mode. These features empower you to create stunning and unique videos, whether you’re a seasoned pro or embarking on your content creation journey.

Comprehensive app ecosystem

DJI provides two powerful apps, DJI Mimo and LightCut, to guide you from shooting to editing. DJI Mimo offers tutorials and shot recommendations, while LightCut features AIpowered one-tap editing and exclusive video templates, ensuring your content shines from start to finish.

Pricing and availability

The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is available for R3 499 at the time of writing (but will fluctuate due to the dollar and various online merchants) and includes a magnetic clamp, tripod, power cable, and storage pouch. As the owner of a mobile reporting hub, JournalismWeb, the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 has the potential to revolutionise (affordable) mobile journalism, smartphone photography, and videography, making it accessible to everyone. With its unmatched portability, advanced stabilisation, and innovative features, it empowers you to effortlessly capture some of life’s memorable moments, ensuring your storytelling is magnificent and evocative down to the finest detail. Storytelling should be nothing less. IB

SHANGHAI IS A WHIRLWIND OF DISCOVERY, FROM ITS HISTORICAL SITES SUCH AS THE MUSEUMS, AND WATER TOWNS TO ITS CAPTIVATING CULTURE. INBOUND SA WRITER KETSIA MAKOLA SPOKE TO MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE TONYE STUURMAN IN CHINA.

hat do you love about the city you currently live in?

My husband, Dudley is a teacher at an international school and our daughter, Skylah-Rose is in her last year of high school. I am a volunteer working in the fields of mental health and gender-based violence. When we moved to Shanghai eight years ago it took me a while to adapt. We lived in a smaller Chinese city of 5 million people. So coming to Shanghai with its 29.2 million people was a challenge.

84 INBOUNDSA / December 2023

Shanghai is a massive, beautiful city with so many interesting things and places to explore. There is something for everybody. You can visit cultural and historical places such as water towns, museums, the Yuyuan Garden, People’s Square, and temples such as the Jade Buddha Temple and the Jing’an Temple. There is also Disney World, the Pearl Tower, the Bund, the French Concession, and of course shopping malls on every corner!

LIVING ABROAD

WHEN I MISS HOME I BAKE! WHEN I MISS MY DAD I MAKE SAGO PUDDING, JUST LIKE HE TAUGHT ME. Working and living in Shanghai is of course different from being a tourist. Work takes up most of our time and we make use of our holidays to explore the city. Living in Shanghai has spoilt me. Public transport is safe, fast, and efficient. You don’t have to leave your house to order food or clothes. Everything is available online and delivery is fast.

What do you find challenging about the culture?

The Chinese culture is rich, unique, and beautiful. The Chinese people are very proud of their heritage and culture. We have lived in a few countries for the past 15 years and we always try to learn about the culture of the country we live in. It was no different with China. When we came here 10 years ago, we met amazing Chinese friends who guided us in adapting and living here.

As expats, we are guests in our host country, and it is so important to be open-minded and respectful of your host country. I am ashamed to say that I have still not mastered the Chinese language, but our daughter has adopted Chinese as her second language. She is our translator if needed. China’s technology has also made it easy for me to navigate my way without speaking the language.

What do you miss about South Africa?

I miss my Mother City, Cape Town, and its food!

Recently I spoke to a number of Chinese people who have visited Cape Town, and they were treated so well by our Capetonians. When I hear them speak about our beautiful city and its people, it makes me so proud to be a Capetonian.

What do you do when you miss home?

When I miss home I bake! When I miss my dad I make sago pudding, just like he taught me. At Easter, I make pickled fish and bake my own hot cross buns. In winter I bake malva pudding and in summer it is peppermint crisp tart. At Christmas there will always be cookies and of course trifle on Christmas day. IB December 2023 / INBOUNDSA 85

LAST DESTINATION

THE LAST DESTINATION I TRAVELLED TO WAS THE

Dominican Republic PATRICIA DE LILLE, MINISTER OF TOURISM , TALKS TO INBOUND SA ABOUT THE LAST COUNTRY SHE VISITED…

I travelled to The Dominican Republic, and

was very impressed with it. It’s a beautiful, small island country and I thoroughly enjoyed it there.

I loved the country because it has

these picturesque, turquoise seas and white sand beaches.

What I found challenging about the country was… nothing! Air access was

easy with a direct flight to the USA from Cape Town and then onto the Dominican Republic.

The food is very, very good and the servings are generous. We always make a point of going to very good restaurants. A lobster roll is always a winner. They also serve a wide selection and cater for the needs of all kinds of travellers from various countries. The standard of the food was also excellent. I loved the warmth and quality service of

the Dominican Republic’s people. They were so friendly, attentive, and efficient.

My next stop is Mozambique because it

is a key source market for South Africa. It has contributed to more than four million visitors to South Africa this year alone. I love travelling on the African continent on our own carrier, SAA. Africa will always be one of my favourite parts of the world to explore. IB

CAR REVIEW

CHINA SHOWS CRITICS IT CAN MAKE QUALITY CARS

The Elite SE comes in at R408 900. Visit your nearest Chery for a test drive.

TIGGO 4 A PRO ON THE ROAD! BY GAVIN PRINS I HAVE NEVER BEEN A FAN OF CHINESE CARS. FOR YEARS, MOTOR JOURNALISTS HAVE ALWAYS RAISED CONCERNS ABOUT SAFETY, RELIABILITY, AND LONG-TERM DURABILITY. WELL, AFTER TEST DRIVING THE TIGGO 4 PRO, I CAN NOW SAY: I AM A HUGE FAN.

I

take an Uber to Chery Sandton, Johannesburg, where a red Tiggo 4 PRO 108 210 ELITE SE CVT is waiting for me.

“That is a beautiful car. It talks to you,” says the driver excitedly. He was not exaggerating. I walk into the garage. The look is quite striking. Apart from the red colour, the hexagonal grille in a diamond pattern gives this car a modern look. The 17-inch black wheels and angular headlamps finish off the futuristic touch. Here it is; an automatic Tiggo 4 PRO. Inside, my expectation of the interior design is exceeded. I open the door and am greeted by a chime. I am not ready to talk yet. The key lies next to me, and I press the start/stop button. I am trying to take it all in. Electric seat adjustment, leather seats, cruise control and dual climate control. The instrument panel on the vehicle is also something I have not seen before. Some reviewers speak of a rattle noise when you start the vehicle. No noise. Some reviewers speak of the steering wheel feeling flimsy. Can’t say I agree.

88 INBOUNDSA / December 2023

I start commanding the virtual ‘assistant’ and she does as she is told. “Open the sunroof, please,” and it opens. “Change the song on my playlist”, and she does it. I take the hour drive to Magaliesberg for a meeting. I navigate on Joburg’s roads, encountering a few different tar surfaces, dodging the odd pothole. I am surprised the car sits so well on the road. My next stop is Randfontein where I meet a friend. I encourage her to talk to the car and give commands. The look on Rialien’s face (a seasoned journalist) is priceless. The Tiggo did not disappoint. For a car that has only been in South Africa for two years, I am impressed.

WHAT’S RIGHT WITH IT?

Apart from the 1 00 000 km warranty , it is even ideal for a small family with plenty of boot space. And it has a handy reverse camera.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH IT? Nothing. I love it. IB

ACTIVISM

JUST BECAUSE YOU WERE BORN INTO A STORY OF ABUSE, DOESN’T MEAN YOU’RE

stuck there…

AS YET ANOTHER ‘16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE’ APPROACHES, WE WILL SEE THE USUAL PLATITUDES AROUND HOW WE NEED TO “ERADICATE THIS SCOURGE”. AWARENESS HAS ITS PLACE, BUT AS SOMEONE WHO GREW UP IN A HOME PLAGUED BY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, JUST KNOWING IT WAS WRONG DIDN’T CHANGE A THING, WRITES MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER AND AUTHOR CHERYL BENADIE.

N

eighbours would notice but not say anything (they had their own relational issues to deal with anyway). Charges were filed at the police station but in South Africa, policemen are committing the very crimes they are supposed to protect women and children against and are getting away with it. So how do the ‘victims’ get the help they need? I wrote my first book, The Wholeness Revolution, because I wanted parents to understand the extensive psychological and emotional damage that being a witness to domestic violence creates in the children who are stuck in a private war zone they can’t escape.

The person meant to protect you could kill your mother – and possibly you and your siblings. This results in complex post-traumatic trauma and this dangerous codependent dance becomes the basis of what you learn about love.

90 INBOUNDSA / December 2023

Girls who grow up in homes where they witness domestic violence are more likely to attract abusive partners and six times more likely to be sexually abused. And boys who see their mothers being abused are 10 times more likely to abuse their female partners as an adult. We become what we know. We unconsciously play the roles we’ve been assigned, never knowing that we have the power to alter the narrative of our lives. That’s how I attracted an abusive partner, who was ‘familiar’. But the first time that he came home drunk and beat me up, was also his last. I’d been in this doomed love story before, as the supporting cast. I am proud of my 22-year-old self, for having the wherewithal to walk away. I hope this year, we can focus more on how victims can heal, grow, and become victorious. Just because you were born into a story of abuse, doesn’t mean you’re stuck there. You can heal, you can grow. You can rewrite your story from a place of power. Abusive subtexts are coded into our culture, what society deems ‘normal’ in terms of romantic love. But that often leaves us in a place where we feel broken. And from my experience, wholeness IS possible. IB

LIVING WITH

ENDOMETRIOSIS

AUTHOR NADINE DIRKS, HAS, THROUGH HER CHRONIC ILLNESS, ENDOMETRIOSIS, WRITTEN A BOOK, HOT WATER, THAT CHRONICLES HER CHALLENGING EXPERIENCES AT THE HANDS OF OUR PUBLIC HEALTHCARE SYSTEM. INBOUND SA’S KETSIA MAKOLA SPOKE TO HER…

Why did you write this book?

I knew it would be healing for me, but more importantly, I know I am not alone, and I wanted to tell my story and encourage others to share theirs too. I knew that this book could potentially speak to women who are dealing with stigma in silence.

Is there any specific meaning behind the title? Hot water tends to be soothing for issues like endometriosis, whether in a hot water bottle, a bath, or in the form of tea.

Also, because sometimes advocating for myself and others has landed me in hot water, I call it good trouble because standing up for oneself is never ‘bad’, no matter how hot the water.

Through your work, you have become a pillar of hope and strength for your community.

My journey to becoming a source of strength and inspiration for my community has largely been accidental in many ways. I had never sought to be seen as a pillar in my community. It just so happened that through my chronic illness and being at the mercy of the public healthcare system, I became galvanised and unwilling to accept things that I knew to be wrong. IB
