Editor’s Note

The dream that became

INBOUND SA GETTING CORPORATES AND INDIVIDUALS TO SUPPORT A NEW MAGAZINE THAT WAS NOT YET ON THE SHELF WAS CHALLENGING – BUT WE DID IT!

Seasoned publisher Elroy van Heerden-Mays had a dream – a lifestyle travel magazine that caters for both the business as well as the professional traveller. Fortunately, his publishing house, Media Xpose had the infrastructure to pull this off. But putting the magazine together did not come without hiccups. First, it was putting together a team. Some stayed, while others just fell by the wayside. For two months we worked tirelessly behind the scenes to prepare a publication that travellers will find informative. It involved booking adverts and approaching celebrities and ordinary folk for stories. Many were cautious at first. Who can blame them? Nobody had heard of us. How do you get someone to advertise in a magazine that is not on shelf yet, a director of a big company asked me. “People buy into people if a brand is not established,”

22

was my quick answer. When the director smiled, I knew I had made her think. In this issue, we explore unique lifestyle stories from as far afield as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New Zealand to South Africa. We feature SA media personality Somizi Mhlongo; stand-up comedian from Cape Town Marc Lottering; and the most followed TikTok influencer in South Africa, Wian van den Berg, to mention a few. I want to thank every company who took a chance on us and supported our first issue. Thank you also to our contributors who shared their wisdom with us. And more importantly, thank YOU, the reader for taking the time out to enjoy what we have put together for you.

“Should you drink alcohol while on a flight?” ANSWER: During a flight, the barometric pressure in the cabin of a plane is lower than it is in most places on earth, says Wilson Tauro, Country Manager Southern Africa at Air France-KLM. This decreased pressure environment diminishes the body’s ability to absorb oxygen and it can produce light-headedness, called hypoxia. Therefore, if you drink alcohol during a flight, you may notice its effects sooner. Because of the lower level of oxygen in your blood, you may seem more drunk in the air than you would on the ground after consuming the same amount of alcohol.

Shahan

Ramkissoon , THE CONSUMMATE PRO

WITH MORE THAN A DECADE OF TELEVISION EXPERIENCE ACROSS THREE CONTINENTS, SHAHAN RAMKISSOON HAS STEADILY BUILT HIMSELF A CREDIBLE MEDIA CAREER, AND RECENTLY LAUNCHED AND CO-FOUNDED FEEL SOUTH AFRICA, A MULTIMEDIA ONLINE PLATFORM, TELLING POSITIVE STORIES. BUT THE PROJECT THAT HAS HIM EXCITED, IS HIS VERY OWN ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE – LENYORA GIN!

W

ho would you list as role-models that helped guide you on your life path?

Definitely my parents. My mom was a news ‘junkie’. She subscribed to every newspaper and watched TV news every night, which is how I fell in love with journalism. It has the power of accountability to protect our democracy and our people. My dad is a businessman. He always preached the importance of being your own boss so that no-one else has the power to determine your professional future.

COVER FEATURE

Was there a defining moment in your life that put you on your career path?

What do you feel is your biggest achievement thus far?

It led to the education department acting against school officials and that’s when I realised the power of journalism. Since then, I’ve been motivated to bring about change through the stories I tell.

While this is unfolding, I also now have my own TV show in which I’m the host and executive producer. It’s really just me, uncensored and real. It’s hard-hitting and fun, two of my traits combined in one show. The Last Word with Shahan Ramkissoon airs on eNCA and eTV.

I started writing for the Young Daily News in Durban at the age of 14. I felt I needed to expose my school for withholding report cards of poor students who couldn’t afford their fees, so I wrote about it in the provincial newspaper.

What drives you?

In journalism, I’m driven by the fact that I have a responsibility to do something to protect our democracy. We’re a nation that has a lot to be proud of, but we can’t let leaders loot and destroy what our struggle icons worked so hard for.

THIS IS ME MERGING MY PASSION FOR JOURNALISM AND FINDING MYSELF AS A BUSINESSMAN.

It definitely has to be co-owning a business which tells good news stories about South Africa. This is me merging my passion for journalism and finding myself as a businessman. It’s helped me grow dramatically in the past year.

What was the rationale for launching Feel SA, and what do you hope to accomplish with this platform?

I spent most of my time as a journalist targeting dodgy politicians and focusing on bad news, because it’s very necessary and relevant to our reality. Our country has a bad reputation and I wanted to show the world that despite all the negative things happening, we have a lot of good people and things to celebrate in South Africa. We are a resilient nation, filled with people who defy the odds to overcome their difficult circumstances. We have kind individuals who go out of their way to help others. Feel SA was established to offer a balance to the news. We wanted to highlight the good and it’s incredible to tell stories about the indomitable human spirit, something this country should be proud about.

In your opinion, what are the top five perks of living in South Africa? In business, the challenge of setting myself goals drives me. I always want to be the best at any job. I am a firm believer in working hard to get results. If we don’t set goals for ourselves, how do we measure success?

What is your motto with regards to defining and achieving success?

This is simple; success is measured on you achieving the goals you set yourself. It can be something personal, big or small. No achievement should go by unnoticed. My goal might look like nothing to someone else, but to me it’s a celebration.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Our cultural diversity. Our food! Our beautiful cities, beaches, and mountains. Our music . Our humour during difficult times.

Tell us a bit about Lenyora Gin. What prompted you to establish a gin brand?

I was asked to help promote a local gin once and the penny dropped for me at that point. I didn’t just always want to be an ambassador for other brands, I wanted one of my own. So I decided to invest and asked the manufacturer to produce a handcrafted gin to my taste. November 2023 / INBOUNDSA 13

COVER FEATURE

What differentiates your gin brand from others and how does it capture your personal essence?

It was a year-and-a-half of back and forth with different flavours and tastings. I wanted it to be perfect and eventually I fell in love with the Vanilla and Elderflower gin we created. I then asked them to remove the bitter aftertaste I dislike in most gins and boom; the perfect blend was created. I’m also a perfectionist and like nice things so I insisted on a premium alcohol because we all know the cheap stuff gives us a hangover.

What is something your audience would be surprised to find out about you?

I love amapiano and my friends say I can actually dance!

What are some of your future plans?

Shahan’s faves! •

I’ve been accepted to do my Executive MBA at UCT. It’s rated the best in Africa and features in the top 50 in the world.

So, I restart my learning process next year and know that once I’m done, I’ll be able to do so much more, both locally and abroad. IB

A perfect day in the life of Shahan Ramkissoon: A good gym session, brunch, the beach and bar hopping (basically me on holiday). Favourite city or town in South Africa: Cape Town. I love it so much here! The beauty of Cape Town calms me and makes me smile. Favourite activity or hobby: Walks on the promenade. Favourite food: Anything my mum cooks. Guilty pleasure: Bread!

Fashion forward with Shahan 1.

2. 3. 4.

5.

What is your relationship with fashion and grooming? I believe I have zero fashion sense; despite that I’m told otherwise by some. I’m that guy who wears jeans and a T-shirt whenever I get the chance. If I have to dress up for an event, I will, but deep inside I prefer a laid back look and approach to fashion. I do love grooming though. I get my hair and beard done weekly, and nails and facials once a month. Oh, and I have a pretty intense skincare routine. How would you describe your fashion sense? I’m safe. I stay away from bright colours and print. My only daring shirt that I own is Maxhosa. What is a must-have fashion accessory every man should have? Good cologne! Come on gents, you can’t go around smelling like yesterday! I prefer subtle Oudh scents. Talk to us about the hair – it is always immaculate. How do you accomplish this? With years and years of practice! It’s honestly a lot of work. Weekly cuts and daily struggles with my hair drying it to perfection and then styling it with hairspray. I reckon I should cut it off soon, it’s been 14 years! What are the top three style tips to always look on fleek? Keep it tailored. Keep it clean. And ooze confidence.

The last destination I travelled to... was the USA I never travel without… Lalela Mswane is a former Miss South Africa 2021 and represented the country at the Miss Universe pageant in 2021, placing as second runner-up. She was also crowned Miss Supranational in 2022. A law graduate, Lalela has stepped into a new role as co-host on SABC 1’s weekday educational talk show, Daily Thetha. We asked her what items she couldn’t travel without. My phone. I can’t live without communicating with the people I love the most. Phone charger. Let’s be honest. It’s all good and well to travel with a phone but what purpose does it serve if it’s going to die?

“Real Housewives” star Anita Lloyd, talks to us about the last country she visited, the USA. I travelled to the United States as I have a strong love relationship with the country. I love everything about it. There are so many facets about the USA and all its amazing cities. Everything is indeed bigger and better there. It is sometimes a challenge to get through passport control. They are extremely safety conscience. They are really no-nonsense people and I actually love that, but it can sometimes get challenging. The food is very, very good. The servings are generous and great. We always make a point of going to very good restaurants. A lobster roll is always a winner.

Mini makeup kit. You never know when you might need to make an appearance somewhere and a girl’s got to look good.

What I don’t like about the country is the American people, and its actually hard for me to say this because I generally absolutely adore them, is that I get frustrated because Americans tend to be uninformed about the rest of the world. Who can blame them? Everything they want is there.

A book. I am an avid reader. I find so much peace in reading. Fiction is my favourite genre of choice.

My next stop is France. We are big Springbok supporters and we are going to the Rugby World Cup.

A travel folder. I travel with my documents and information, especially for international trips.

FROM RETREAT TO FRANCE:

Marc Lottering’s HILARIOUS PARIS FAUX PAS

FROM PACKING TOO FEW CLOTHES AND APPEARING IN FRONT OF HIS FANS WITH AN OUTFIT HE WORE A FEW DAYS EARLIER, TO GETTING THE FRENCH HE KNEW MIXED UP, MARC LOTTERING’S RECENT TRIP TO THE MOST ROMANTIC CITY IN THE WORLD WAS AN EXPERIENCE TO REMEMBER!

C

elebrities will tell you, wearing the same outfit in front of the flashing cameras is a big fashion no-no! But Cape Town comedian Marc Lottering (55) did not have enough space in his suitcase for extra clothes or enough time to prepare. “We were still in London with my show when Anwar (his husband) suggested we go to Paris. We have never been. And we still had a few months left on our visas. So, we travelled to Paris before heading back home.

Phone app saves the day

“But I mos now didn’t pack enough clothes. Everyday I went on social media and did a video for my followers, but it became challenging to check what was I wearing two days earlier when I posted. So, I said to Anwar, wait I have a plan. On my phone is a filter that changes your clothes or colour,” says Marc. Problem solved. “Also, in the days leading up to our trip, I learnt a few French words because some of my friends said the French sometimes get upset when you can’t speak their language. I learnt bonjour is what you say during the day and bonsoir is good

Marc says he had created a very different idea of France in his mind. “I thought it was only white people who lived there but there were a lot of black people. As a child, I always thought I would never get to go to Paris. But as an adult, and having been to the city, I now realise the world is small.”

“Jy gat jouself laat maak”

The couple have decided not to live on budget meals and experiences when they go on overseas holidays anymore. “Look here, you go to these foreign cities with the Lord telling you ‘don’t even window shop’. Jy gat jouself laat maak (You couldn’t be more wrong). But we stopped living on a budget. We wanted to eat lekker,” says Marc. “You only live once. I always say, live like you are going to die. You will look at life differently and treat people nicer.”

“We get to this restaurant one evening. I might have had one too many. Jirrie, and here I ‘bonjour’ the people. I might have said a few other words that did not fit into the conversation. Fortunately, the people that we were with did not take offence. But next time, I will be better prepared,” said Marc.

The comedian, who is currently on a national tour with his latest show, So I wrote that musical, says he has come to realise that South Africa is the safest place for him. His bucket list, however, is not done yet. Mozambique is a place he wants to visit as well as Italy. “You must mos go to Italy for the pizza, they say.” Far down the list is Portugal. “My friends are telling me I will like Portugal.” But for now, his focus is on his comedy show, “So I wrote that musical” that runs from 22 November until 6 January 2024 at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town. ACTRESS ANGELIQUE GERBER HIT ROCK BOTTOM WHEN COVID-19 struck THE WORLD. BUT THEN A SOCIAL HABIT TURNED INTO A BUSINESS THAT HAS NOW GROWN, EVEN LONG AFTER LOCKDOWN. Angelique was busy separating from her rugby star husband, Jacques Potgieter, who is also the father of her three children. The movie and television roles were not coming in as they used to. “I am constantly looking for other streams of income. I have to take care of three little ones. I was sitting at home one day and decided to offer social media courses. This is for people who can’t necessarily afford a social media company to help boost their brand, but they want to learn more about getting their business or product out there,” explains Angelique. Angelique says she takes students and shows them how to use the right content on the right platform to get their brand message across. “We don’t just talk to students. We show them examples as part of our practical approach.” And yes, she is still single! November 2023 / INBOUNDSA 23

their own clothing line. But I can’t think of anyone who designed a clothing line for children. I love kids and they love me. They think I am a cartoon character. When I meet them, they are so disappointed because they expect me to be in a television box. I saw this gap and Sompire Kids was born.

How did you come up with the name?

The name is derived from my Empire-Sompire. This was to create a legacy and generational wealth for me. I always reinvent myself.

Any other exciting projects we can look forward to?

I love make-up. I do my own make-up and there might be a line coming out soon. Also hair. I love experimenting with hairstyles. You might also see some hair products.

What is the difference between Sompire and other clothing lines?

You are an Idols judge, dancer and singer. Is there anything you can’t do?

Sompire Kids encourages kids to be themselves. It encourages boldness. It mainly revolves around positivity, loving themselves, and being confident enough to be who they truly are. Hence the slogan, “Brave enough to be yourself”.

Who designed the clothes?

You are a man known to enjoy the finer things in life, yet the clothing line’s prices are quite low. Tell us why?

Yes! I can’t hate anyone. I have too much love inside of me.

I designed them myself. I have always been obsessed with fashion. Sometimes, if I get clothes, I have them altered to suit my style.

everything in you! You are going to have to fight for it and the strength you will gain from that will keep you going.

Teenagers seemed to be obsessed with how celebrities look on social media. What advice would you give them?

Don’t become obsessed. All of that stuff is fleeting and what speaks for you is your work ethic and how you speak to people.

Beauty is…?

…You. You are beauty.

As a skincare ambassador, it takes dedication to maintain a healthy and glowing skin. You seem to pull it off well. What is your beauty routine in the morning? I wash my face and then apply glycolic bright serum, filler anti-wrinkle 1.5% pure hyaluronic acid serum and filler serum. I then apply filler replumping SPF 50 day cream.

What is the one product you can’t live without?

I love a lip balm and if I want to take it up a notch, I use the L’Oréal Paris Glow Paradise Lip Balm-inLipstick.

In your job as ambassador, what beauty tip shocked you most?

That we also have to take care of our necks the same way we take care of our faces.

You have been known to be an inspiration to many young women, not only in South Africa but around the globe. Who inspires you? Viola Davis. (Viola Davis is an American actress and producer, and one of the few performers to have been awarded an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. She is also the sole African American to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting.)

What is your motto with regards to defining and achieving success?

Pursue excellence!

What do you feel are your biggest achievement thus far?

All my major milestones are significant achievements for me, and it would be hard to just pick one.

Any favourite Hollywood actors you can’t wait to work with?

Denzel Washington.

You are now based in LA. But the American cuisine differs from South Africa. What foods do you miss the most? Braai meat, especially wors!

Do you prepare SA delicacies in LA for yourself and if so, what?

Nope. Because that would require me cooking!

What is something your audience would be surprised to find out about you? I am an introvert.

What do you still want to accomplish in life?

A lot of things, I wouldn’t know where to start. IB

HABITS FOR HOME AS WE NEAR THE END OF 2023, JUGGLING WORK AND EXERCISE SEEMS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR MANY. IT’S ALL ABOUT CREATING NEW HABITS FOR YOURSELF, WRITES RADIO AND TV PRESENTER, EWAN STRYDOM.

Juggling your time

Make exercise part of your lifestyle by noting your workout times in your diary, just as you would any other appointment. I know that things can change at the last minute, but then you adjust your diary. When you get home, or before you go to work, do some exercise at home. The point is to never not do anything. Always do something. Make a schedule and start exercising three times a week and stick to that. Building a habit takes time but once you’ve built it, your body will thank you for it. Exercise at the office during your lunch break, even if it’s just 30

FITNESS

minutes. Keep some equipment in the boot of your car, for instance, stretch bands, or maybe a small bag of weights.

You don’t need a lot of equipment or space

Invest in a set of dumbbells, especially the adjustable ones. Elastic, stretchable bands are great to exercise with and work your entire body. This is ideal for many individuals who are not accustomed to going to the gym, or don’t like it. Do a normal squat exercise with some weights, and then work your way up to push-ups. Create a pull-up bar, especially for the gents. I would recommend sticking with the basics at home. A skipping rope is a fantastic tool to get that cardio in.

Eating healthily

I don’t believe in the word “diet”. I believe in eating the right foods and pairing that with a good exercise routine. Everything is about consistency. You must push yourself a little bit further than you are comfortable with to achieve a high intensity when you exercise. If you do this and eat healthily, you’re on the way to a healthier and fitter looking you! Make sure you eat enough protein, and avoid sugar, salt, refined carbs, fizzy drinks and alcohol.

To shake or not to shake

Another great tip is to drink a good quality protein shake. RX protein is fantastic, natural and has no biochemically engineered ingredients. I drink one protein shake mid-morning to fuel my energy. But just remember, a protein shake is not a meal replacement.

Can you afford it?

Food in general is expensive. Eat what your body needs. I like egg whites with veggies and broccoli for lunch. Eggs are still reasonably Air squats affordable and Start with normal air an excellent squats at home. Every source of minute on the minute you protein. You do 40 air squats. If you don’t have take less time to do the to buy fancy squats, you have more “diet” foods time to rest. You can to really up adapt this principle for your game. IB

any other type of exercise you want.

Make sure to not skip out on vegetables; try and eat them in the most natural form if possible. I try and follow a healthy diet but do cheat on occasion. A burger is always my go-to, with chips! Oh! And pizza.

Keeping fit, even during stressful times

I aim to train at least six times a week. I’ve got a boxing bag in my garage, but also go to gym quite a lot. I exercise all the different muscle groups throughout the week. I’ve really managed to form a habit of doing this and it forms part of my daily routine. Rest is also very important. Sleep and rest enough so you recover from your exercise. When you are going through a stressful time, it is even more important to go out and do something to get the blood flowing. When you exercise, endorphins (the happy hormones) are released, and you feel instantly better and less stressed. November 2023 / INBOUNDSA 33

IS STILL THE BIGGEST KILLER OF SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN

S

outh Africa has the second highest number of people living with type 2 diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the National Institute of Health. In South Africa, diabetes is the leading underlying natural cause of death in women and the second highest underlying cause of death for the entire population. Diabetes mellitus (diabetes) is a metabolic disorder which is characterised by chronic high glucose levels in the blood. Insulin secretion does not function as it should. Insulin is the key that assists with the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and protein. The first signs of diabetes can take years to develop, and most people will have no symptoms in the beginning.

HAVING INCREASED CRAVINGS FOR CHOCOLATE AND ICE CREAM LATELY? SUFFERING FROM FATIGUE? HAVE DARKER SKIN AROUND YOUR NECK? SEE A DOCTOR, NOW, SAYS DR LEE-ANN SULLIMAN. YOU’RE PROBABLY ONE OF MILLIONS SUFFERING FROM DIABETES.

Starts with symptoms of insulin resistance

It can start with symptoms indicative of insulin resistance, such as cravings for sweet things, and fatigue even though living a sedentary lifestyle. Other symptoms include darkening of the skin around the neck and under the armpits and an increase in abdominal fat. As your glucose starts to increase in your blood you can experience thirst, increased urination and worsening fatigue, and recurrent bladder infections or blurry vision. If your sugar levels are dangerously high you can suffer from diarrhoea, abnormal breathing and even go into a coma. If you suspect you have diabetes, please see your doctor urgently.

Ongoing research in diabetes management

There is ongoing research in diabetes management with regards to alternate proteins that can function like insulin, as well as cellular therapies. This will take time and is not available for use in South Africa yet. However, new medications have become more available in the private sector over last couple of years, which have already made strides in diabetes management. Diabetes can affect your eyes, causing cataracts, glaucoma and even blindness. The disease can also affect your kidneys, which can lead to kidney failure, as well your blood vessels and nerves, commonly leading to poor blood flow in the feet that results in a burning feeling or cramping of the feet. If not managed, the latter will lead to foot ulcers that can become infected and in the worst cases, result in amputation.

Make some lifestyle changes

There is no medication that is more powerful than lifestyle changes, which can decrease your risk of developing diabetes. Increasing your daily exercise activity and eating healthily are the best ways to improve insulin resistance as well as lower high glucose levels. If you can, find community-guided education that focusses on lifestyle changes such as dietary advice and offers communal exercise programmes that are free. Train your

brain

TO GET YOUR BODY

SUMMER-READY! TRAINING THE BRAIN IS ESSENTIAL FOR BOTH OUR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELLBEING. JUST AS WE WORK ON OUR BODIES TO MAINTAIN A SUMMER-READY PHYSIQUE, CONSISTENT BRAIN TRAINING IS CRUCIAL TO SUSTAINING COGNITIVE HEALTH, WRITES ORGANISATIONAL SOLUTIONIST KEVIN BRITZ.

O

ur brain, like our muscles, requires exercise to stay sharp and adaptable. Regular mental workouts enhance memory, problemsolving skills, and emotional resilience, helping us navigate life’s challenges effectively. Moreover, a healthy brain supports better decision-making, creativity, and overall quality of life. Just as we prioritize physical fitness for a beach-ready body, nurturing our brain through consistent training is key to achieving a vibrant and fulfilling life year-round. The reticular activating system (RAS)

38 INBOUNDSA / November 2023

WELLNESS

is a crucial network of neurons located within the brainstem, specifically in the upper part of the brainstem. It plays a fundamental role in regulating wakefulness, alertness, and attention. Essentially, the RAS acts as the brain’s “alertness center.” Training the brain is imperative for optimal functioning. By creating habits that stimulate the brain, we harness the power of neuroplasticity, enabling it to adapt and grow. The reticular activating system plays a pivotal role in focus and attention, so cultivating mindfulness and attention control is essential.

3 Important rules to remember about the brain 1.

2. 3.

The brain is designed to keep you safe: fight, flight, freeze or fawn. Your brain focuses on WHATEVER you want to focus on (good or bad). Your brain always finds evidence to support what you focus on (so, be careful what you focus on).

Key aspects of the reticular activating system

Alertness and attention: The RAS is responsible for filtering and processing sensory information from our environment. It decides what information is relevant and should be brought to our conscious awareness. This selective attention mechanism helps us focus on important stimuli while ignoring less critical ones. The RAS allows us to focus on WHATEVER we put our attention to and then tries to find supporting evidence to prove the reality of it. Sleep-wake cycle: The RAS is intimately involved in regulating our sleep-wake cycle. It helps promote wakefulness during the day and encourages sleepiness at night. Integration of sensory input: The RAS receives input from various sensory systems, including visual, auditory, and somatosensory (touch and body position). Connection to higher brain regions: The RAS communicates with higher brain regions, to direct our attention to specific stimuli and tasks. To assist the brain, adequate oxygenation is paramount; deep breathing exercises and

physical activity boost oxygen delivery to the brain, enhancing cognitive performance. Equally important is sleep, during which the brain consolidates memories and processes information. Incorporating these practices into our daily routine fosters mental clarity, emotional balance, and heightened cognitive abilities, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and successful life.

A simple 1 exercise, 0-day using the RAS

For 10 day s, write do wn 10 things you love and re cognize about you rself and y our life. • For eve ry day of w riting, you cannot re p e at anything you’ve alr eady written do wn in the previous d ays.

The aim of the exercise is to stretch your brain into actively loving yourself and intentionally getting your brain to recognize the things we often take for granted.

What to expect?

After day 4, you will find it increasingly difficult to write down things that you love and recognise about yourself (if you don’t struggle, keep going). What this will do for you is bring you back to the present moment, to find the intrinsic value of yourself, and also build awareness of where you might have a limiting belief or where you devalue yourself. This will also potentially lead you to want to recognize yourself more often (which is a really good thing). By day 10 (if you are disciplined), you will start seeing shifts in how you perceive yourself, your life, the people around you, and how to deal with situations that may occur. This simple exercise is a simple yet very effective way of intentionally recognizing how to change your brain. IB November 2023 / INBOUNDSA 39

“When you’re out there on your own, carrying a 15kg backpack while running or cycling insane distances with daily calculated food and hydration portions, strategy and intuition become the two most important survival skills,” he says.

But Gaven has some other challenges in life. “I am also driven by my own personal experiences with my health and wellness challenges. Living with chronic fatigue, ADD, and dyslexia is not easy.

Cape to Cairo on a bicycle

Gaven’s professional adventures started in 2017 when he cycled solo and unsupported from Cape Town to Cairo. This did not come without risks.

“My most challenging adventure so far was my island solo swim up north, from Ila Da Mozambique to the mainland in 2019. I don’t swim in general or for that matter enjoy swimming, but I guess I needed to tick that box and basically swam for my life. In 2018, I ran 4 000km solo and unsupported across the continent of Africa, and in 2020 I completed a 388km beach run along the coastline November 2023 / INBOUNDSA 47

of Mozambique in 10 days. “Having experienced the length and width of Africa you get to appreciate the simplicity of life and how little one really needs.” “My last adventure was a solo and unsupported 1 000km run from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town in 30 days,” Gaven adds.

“Yes, there were times I wanted to quit!”

And yes, there were many times he wanted to quit. “I was in West Kenya cycling along Lake Turkana, sunburnt, dehydrated, blistered, and with mechanical issues getting water from the local nomadic tribes. During my solo island swim my leg started to cramp just past the halfway mark,” Gaven says. His latest adventure is a six-day hike from Mbotyi in KwaZulu-Natal to the West Coast Sun Hotel. “We are going to walk along cliff edges, gravel roads, through a forest and past waterfalls. There will be no climbing but quite a few uphill walks. We will have a meal in the morning and then arrive at our next point in the afternoon. There will be opportunities to swim and relax. The biggest rule is – we walk at the pace of the slowest person,” Gaven explains.

Pack light. Pack right

Gaven’s advice to people wanting to become an adventurer is simple: “Live in a constant state of wonder and never stop exploring. You can become an everyday explorer without leaving your home and loved ones behind. Everywhere is somewhere. Hiking or mountain biking is a great way to explore the outdoors. You’ll face challenges, find your limits, and learn more about your strengths and weaknesses as you take risks and pursue your goals. Pack light. Pack right!” With his fearless spirit and boundless energy, Gaven embodies the very essence of adventure and discovery, inspiring countless others to follow in his intrepid footsteps. Whether navigating treacherous terrain, braving the elements, or championing vital causes, he is a true force of nature, and a beacon of hope in a world hungry for heroes. “I believe that adventure is a philosophy of life. It is about self-discovery. No journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within. I must have inherited my grandfather’s adventurous spirit. He built his own single-seater speed boats and raced them along the South coast. IB

Dates for the West Coast hike: 11-16 February, 10-15 March, 1-6 April 2024

A COUNTRY PARADISE HIDDEN IN THE

MAGALIESBERG By Gavin Prins

A

s I drive the hour-long journey from Johannesburg to Magaliesberg, my thoughts are occupied by deadlines, hunger, and lack of sleep. The moment I approach the mountain road leading up to the famous Mount Grace Hotel, the trees become greener, and the views become more spectacular. I am now officially in a country paradise.

HOTEL REVIEW

The suite is like a luxurious house in the bush. a bottle of sparkling wine and a tray of biltong, strawberries, and dried fruit await me. I waste no time digging in. The suite is made up of four sections. On the left is a lounge area with a TV and fireplace. However, it’s Spring, so not cold enough for me to light the fire. On the other side of the kitchenette is a double bed, a massive full bathroom, and a dressing area where you can also sit at a desk and work.

Heated private pool

The bedroom as well as the lounge have folding doors that open to a deck with breathtaking views, a private heated swimming pool, and two pool loungers. Of course, it does not take me long to take a dip in my pool. Assistant General Manager, Nangomso Tate, greets me at reception, handing me a glass of sparkling wine. His smile and infectious laugh instantly make me forget about Joburg’s concrete jungle. I am here for one night, so I better make the most of it. He instructs one of the porters, Promise, to drive me in a golf cart further up the mountain to my executive suite. Suite 221 is quite literally the last room tucked away on a slight slope in between trees and other greenery.

The suites are quite a few metres apart from each other, and I can hardly hear the other guests talking. The bed is heavenly. The next morning, one phone call to reception and the golf cart is at the front door within minutes. He takes us to the dining hall. Breakfast is a variety of warm and cold dishes. As I sit down, I look out to the rest of Magaliesberg city, farms, and other greenery. Picnic baskets are available to those wanting to relax on the grass overlooking the rest of the Magaliesberg area.

The suite is like a luxurious house in the bush. I walk into a kitchenette and dining area where

“Are you ready for your tour?” says Nangomsa. “Please call me Tate. People here up north can’t November 2023 / INBOUNDSA 51

say Nangomsa.” He is from the Eastern Cape. Tate takes me on a tour of the grounds and talks with pride about the hotel, its amazing plans to attract more visitors, and the three different hotel rooms (single rooms, apartment-style rooms, and suites). When asked how he maintains 42 swimming pools on the property, all I got was: “Yoh, yoh, yoh!” And he laughs. We now go to the Spa which is spectacular: from the stone walking massage (yes, you walk on stones that form part of a mini waterfall), to actual back and foot massages and a lounge with more amazing views. Tate tells me about a corporate company that is renting an apartment but keeps on extending their stay. I can tell he likes this.

Ideal for the business traveller or couples

Whether you are a business traveller who needs a modern conference and meeting venue, a couple in need of a romantic breakaway, or simply a single person wanting a breath of fresh air, Mount Grace is for you. There are lots of activities: sports, hiking up the mountains (unguided), and a whole play area for kids with a nanny on site to look after your children. And there is no such thing as loadshedding (the generators kick in after the electricity goes off) and WiFi is stable. Oh wait, we’re not done with Tate yet. “Let me take you to a special place,” he says. We walk up a steep bushy area to get to what I thought was a lookout point. But no, it’s a helipad. And the views from here are even more beautiful. “So next time you come visit Mr Prins, come with your helicopter.” We laugh. “I might just,” I say. Mount Grace was quick, but it fed the soul and relaxed the mind. IB

SOME INTERESTING FACTS •

Somewhere in the mid-1800s the mountain range became known as Magaliesberg (Mogale’s mountain) after Kgosi Mogale. Mogale means “sharp” or “brave” person.

In 1822, Shaka Zulu, the leader of the Zulu Kingdom, sent his most trusted commander, Mzilikazi, to conquer the Sotho tribes of the region. After accomplishing this task, Mzilikazi decided to break away from Shaka and found his own nation, the Matabele, and settled here.

The Magaliesberg mountains offer excellent rock climbing opportunities spread across its many kloofs and escarpments. (Wikipedia)

New Zealand DIFFERENCES ARE EMBRACED, EVEN WELCOMED

LIEZL FERREIRA, AN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR, AND HER FAMILY RELOCATED TO WELLINGTON IN NEW ZEALAND NOT SO LONG AGO. HERE SHE TALKS ABOUT WHAT SHE MISSES ABOUT SA AND WHAT IT’S LIKE TO LIVE IN ANOTHER COUNTRY.

W

hat do you love about the city you currently live in?

The nature and beauty of this wonderful city is something that takes your breath away. When we first got here, we would take photos of every rainbow and sunset we saw. Walking trails are very popular here and it’s normal for people to park their cars anywhere and just take a walk in the woods. This is something you probably would not even consider in South Africa. Everything just works here. We always have electricity, and you can basically do everything online, from sorting parking tickets or speeding fines to setting up a new business. Differences are embraced, even welcomed. Everyone matters. Personal days are normal and mental health is important. There are so many different cultures here; people from all over the world. Everyone is proud of their heritage.

54 INBOUNDSA / November 2023

You can leave something behind anywhere and be certain to find it where you left it. If you find it missing, most of the time someone has taken it to keep it safe for you. You can keep an eye out for it on a Facebook group.

What do you find challenging about the culture? Facial tattoos were something we had to get used to. They show a Māori person’s personal history. We had to remind each other not to stare.

Most shops and restaurants are closed in our town by 6pm. One Saturday night we tried to find a place to have a drink but the only place open was a restaurant busy with cooking classes. Needless to say, we went home and made coffee. I totally related to the Spain women’s soccer team when they left Palmerston North saying it was boring. The clothes here are dreadful and ugly. I struggle

LIVING ABROAD

to find pretty dresses that are affordable. Online shopping is my favourite option. The NZ health system is intimidating. Most of the medicines and services are free and the doctors work long and hard hours, but it works differently here. You must find a doctor in your area that has space for new patients, but many of them are full. If you are lucky enough to find one, you must be registered with that doctor and only that doctor. You can’t just go to another doctor. To see a specialist is challenging and I know of many people who have to wait months to see a specialist after they have been referred by their doctor.

What do you miss about South Africa?

Over-the-counter medicine that works. Everything is regulated here and needs a prescription. I also miss people who get my sense of humour. Most of the time my jokes get lost in translation and just come across as rude. Knowing where all the bargains and cheap stuff are. I miss my bushveld fire and all the animal sounds that come with it. I miss going out for the night and having a proper “kuier” with friends that know you and your history. New friends will never know everything about you. I miss being able to predict the weather by smelling the air and looking up at the clouds. The weather here is very unpredictable, and you can have four different seasons in one day! I’ve learned that you must always have a jacket in the car. Yes, I am cold, I am always cold.

What do you do when you miss home?

I visit the South African shop in my town. They have crème soda, chutney, Ouma rusks, Bovril and biltong. The elderly couple that owns it speaks Afrikaans and if you stand there long enough, there will be fellow South Africans coming by just to have a chat. I make all the traditional SA dishes I can think of and invite South African friends over. I count my blessings and remember my “why”; why we made the decision to move here. A better future, safety and a better life for my two children. That’s what parents do. They sacrifice for their children. IB

The Seychelles A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME

TRUE PARADISE EXPERIENCE By Elroy van Heerden-Mays THE SEYCHELLES IS AN ARCHIPELAGO OF 115 ISLANDS IN THE INDIAN OCEAN, OFF THE COAST OF EAST AFRICA WITH A TROPICAL CLIMATE AND ALMOST 12 HOURS OF SUNLIGHT A DAY.

November 2023 / INBOUNDSA 57

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

T

he Seychellois coastline is a pictureperfect stretch of soft white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, providing an idyllic setting to the lush tropical rainforests that provide a home to diverse wildlife and tropical plant species that makes Seychelles a paradise for anyone looking for an unforgettable vacation.

Mahé

historic site is home to the remains of famous personalities such as corsair Jean-Francois Hodoul and the 2.7m tall Charles Dorothee Savy. You will also find the graves of many victims of the smallpox epidemic of 1883. At the entrance, the words “belle pensée d’un commandant bienaisant’ (beautiful thoughts of a benevolent commander) are engraved on a slab.

The principal island of the archipelago, which has one of the tiniest capitals in the world, called Victoria. Once known as ‘Isle of Abundance’, it is an island of plenty with its imposing silhouette cutting a majestic profile against the cobalt sky and boasting more than 60 white sandy beaches.

The Sir Selwyn Selwyn Clarke market, which is one of the top attractions on Mahé, is where all the flavours and colours of Seychelles come together in the centre of Victoria. It is the market where local farmers come and sell their crops on a Saturday morning.

Mahé offers a variety of land and sea excursions which include historical hotspots, mountain trails, art galleries, a bustling market, five-star resorts like the Eden Bleu Hotel on Eden Island and Fisherman’s Cove Resort - which provide world-class accommodation - scenic tours where the rarest species of plants and animals can be discovered, and plenty of restaurants where one can experience sumptuous Seychellois Creole cuisine.

Takamaka is the spirit of the Seychelles. It all started with home distillation by father Robert and son Bernard. Robert’s father, Grandpappy René Michel d’Offay had rooted his grandchildren’s interest in rum making through his own endeavours, making the local Creole speciality, Rum Arrangé.

Mission Lodge which is situated just below the summit of Sans Soucis, affords one of the most panoramic views of Mahé’s West Coast. Formerly known as Venn’s Town (and later renamed ‘Capucin’), missionaries established a school there for liberated Africans who arrived in Seychelles after 1861. The ruins serve as a reminder of Seychelles’ role in the region’s campaign to eradicate the slave trade following the abolition of slavery in 1834. Tranquility and stunning natural beauty will conspire to win your heart while appreciating breathtaking views of verdant mountainsides and the vast azure ocean above where majestic tropic birds glide.

The Bel Air Cemetery opened by French settlers in the early 1780s, was the first official burial ground to be opened on Mahé Island. Here you will find many important milestones, vaults and shrine tombs of eminent personalities. This

With limited access to conventional distillation parts, Bernard and his father used their own backyard swimming pool as an interim cooling tower for their makeshift condenser, went off to their local supermarket to buy yeast and refined sugar, and began experimenting. Over the years, Richard and Bernard have honed their craft through their own sense of curiosity and discovery. It’s impacted how they blend and age their rum, it’s forged the role they play in their community, and it’s shaped who they are today as people, and as rum makers. Takamaka Rum retails in many European countries, the Middle East and Africa.

Le Jardin du Roi, in a spice garden where you can experience the original French tradition of the 18th Century spice trade. This garden walk takes visitors through the vanilla and allspice areas to the tortoise pens and up to the viewpoint. The garden boasts rows of vanilla vines, citronelle, cinnamon and many others, including medicinal and endemic plants which offer a real educational experience into the history of medicine and natural resources.

La Digue

With a population of ± 3000, this is Seychelles’ fourth largest island which lies 43km from the main island of Mahé and 6.5km from the neighbouring island of Praslin. La Digue is home to some of Seychelles most iconic beaches, unique pink granite formations, coconut palms, forest sanctuaries and some fine examples of Creole colonial architecture. La Digue offers budget-friendly accommodation ranging from hotels to guesthouses. A number of excellent restaurants within the hustle and bustle and small to medium-sized market type eateries can be found along the roads of La Digue. The best way to explore the island is by bicycle, which is the easiest way to visit the most splendid beaches on the south-east coast of the island: Grand Anse, Petit Anse, Anse Coco and Anse Caiman. However, swimming during the months of May and November is dangerous in this area.

L’Union Estate is where you will see the islands vestiges of the islands coconut industry, see a traditional copra mill and kiln where coconut flesh is turned into oil, giant land tortoises, and the largest granite boulder in Seychelles. Activities around the island include fishing, diving, snorkelling, and swimming, sailing and cruising, guided walks and trails, spa and wellness retreats and island hopping by feet or bicycle. Not to be missed is La Digue’s sunset cruise along the scenic coastline, an island tour by oxcart, the art galleries, and the traditional Seychellois cuisine. The perfect idyllic place for an intimate and romantic beach wedding.

Praslin

An immeasurably beautiful tropical paradise with substantial tracts of tropical forests with birds such as the endemic Seychelles bulbul and the Seychelles black parrot. Praslin boasts beautiful beaches such as Anse Lazio which is Praslin’s most famous beach, nestled on a cove on Praslin’s northwest coast.

60 INBOUNDSA / November 2023

Well-known for the legendary Coco-de-Mer, the worlds heaviest nut, which is found at The Vallee-de-Mei, Seychelles’ second UNESCO World Heritage Site. Coco-de-Mer, commonly known as the sea nut, is a monotypic genus in the palm family and has the biggest seed in a plant and is also endemic to the island of Praslin. The Vallee-de-Mei are also home to six endemic palm species and other indigenous trees. Even if you have no interest in flora and fauna, the atmosphere in this place is inspiring. It’s recommended you visit Praslin for at least three days while staying at beautiful resorts like Paradise Sun Hotel, with its charming ocean facing French-Creole bungalows that peek out from tropical flowering gardens on a stretch of white coral-crushed sand bordered by granite boulders. Praslin is home to a few other interesting hikes besides Vallee-de-Mei nature reserve, allowing you to experience the unique beauty of the island’s nature. Praslin is easily accessible by either air or sea from Mahé.

Moyenne Island

This eco-reserve stands as a reminder of what the Seychelles were like before tourism arrived. Privately owned by Brendon Grimshaw, the island is situated in the Sainte Anne Marine National Park off the north coast of Mahé. From 1915 until the 1960s, the island was abandoned until its purchase by Grimshaw. Since the 1970s, it has been a flora and fauna reserve. The island is approximately 4.5km from Mahé and can be explored by a glass bottom boat, departing from Eden Island Marina, to discover the underwater world of this unique and protected tropical reef. Two main ways of getting to Moyenne Island are either by renting a boat yourself or booking a half-day trip at one of the travel agencies in Victoria, which includes snorkeling in the nearby waters of the island. The island offers a traditional barbeque for its day visitors, while hiking the island and encountering close-ups with a large number of tortoises that are protected and roam in secluded parts of the island. THE CHEF INTERVIEW

HE HAS COOKED FOR PRESIDENTS AND CELEBRITIES. THANKS TO A COLLABORATION WITH THE CAPE GRACE, HE IS NOW HELPING THE HOTEL IMPROVE ITS CUISINE OFFERING. BUT WHEN CHEF GREGORY CZARNECKI IS AT HOME, SPAGHETTI BOLOGNESE OR ROAST CHICKEN IS HIS FAVOURITE MEAL TO COOK FOR HIMSELF. HE SPOKE TO INBOUND SA ABOUT HIS CULINARY VISION.

C

ongratulations on the collaboration with Cape Grace. How have you changed the menu?

The collaboration is quite unique and an interesting challenge for me. I am very excited to bring my expertise and vision to the hotel and to weave my DNA into their food & beverage offering to create a beautiful, elevated experience for our patrons.

What is the most exciting dish we can look forward to? We are still at the very early stages of development, so it’s difficult to say. All I know is that our approach is going to be playful, and we aim to change the perception of how restaurants in a hotel should be like. My style of food is contemporary minimalist, so I think it’s always going to be a bit playful and with a focus on flavour.

You have cooked for leaders and celebrities. What is the feedback you got from them?

Working in Europe and in Michelin Star restaurants you frequently have leaders and celebrities coming to the restaurant. Some of them include Sir Paul McCartney and former French president Nicolas Sarkozy. It does create some excitement in the kitchen but, the thing is, you must always treat them like normal guests. They are just people like everybody else, and they want to enjoy simple food sometimes. On the kitchen side, we never differentiate between normal and famous customers, because at the end of the day we are here to provide a memorable experience for all our guests, no matter who they are.

You have won so many awards. What does this mean to you?

The thing about awards is that it’s not just one person’s work. It’s the incredible team behind the scenes that work twice as hard to get it done. It is great for the team spirit to know that all the effort that we put in gets recognised. It really encourages them and helps with team morale; knowing that we’re moving in the right direction and that we should keep going. However, winning awards is not my main goal. I have always believed that if you chase awards, you will never receive them. Stick to your vision and do what you believe in and in the end, it will pay off.

What is your favourite dish to eat and why?

I like easier cooking at home such as spaghetti bolognese or a roasted chicken on a Sunday night. When you are exposed the whole week to complicated preparation and dishes, I tend to be more easy-going at home, but whatever I make still must be well executed. If I make a roasted chicken, it will take me about four hours at home to perfect it.

How did your love for cooking start and who taught you how to cook your first meal?

I was very lucky to be born into an environment where both my parents were gourmands and gourmets, so I was always exposed to good food. Being French, you know, food is more than just a passion, it is an obsession. I was lucky to grow up surrounded by that food culture. I really enjoyed discovering different ingredients. IB

What is your income per month on brand advertising social media?

It depends on a lot of stuff. Its never the same. On YouTube I earn R120 000 a month. Brand deals are also one of my other sources of income.

Content is king. Influencers would post similar content, yet one goes viral and the other not. This is confusing. 74 INBOUNDSA / November 2023

Some people treat content too much like their audiences are robots. We expect to get a million views on one video and the next one should also get similar views. People must understand there are a few factors to consider, like maybe you post on a public holiday or weekend. Maybe people are not in the mood to watch videos. We judge ourselves too harshly thinking our videos are bad. And then we give up. I think the best way to move forward is to keep posting and to improve on your past videos.

How long does it take you to decide your content for a video?

A lot of people, depending on what they do, can just take out their phone and make a video. I have to go out and do magic tricks in public. So, my videos usually take a week or two of planning. I do try to post videos every day. I think up the next trick. So instead of doing the trick in my kitchen, people appreciate it more if I go out to a fast-food restaurant or some public place. People find that more relatable.

I always try to compete with the top magicians overseas. I think it’s a great way of pushing myself. I always want to grow and keep going. I have been posting since I was a kid.

Unlock your business dreams WITH ROBUST SUPPORT SYSTEMS THAT EMPOWER FRANCHISES IN THE CHALLENGING LANDSCAPE OF SOUTH AFRICAN BUSINESS, MARKED BY ECONOMIC DOWNTURNS AND AN ONGOING ENERGY CRISIS, A BEACON FOR ENTREPRENEURS HAS EMERGED. MEET INFINITY BRANDS, A FRANCHISE MANAGEMENT COMPANY, LED BY FRANCHISE MANAGEMENT VETERAN RICARDO MAIO.

I

nfinity Brands has proven that with the right structures, processes, and support, business can do more than survive; it can thrive in the face of challenge.

RICARDO MAIO

“Franchising should be viewed as a partnership in which everyone gains,” says Ricardo Maio, CEO of Infinity Brands. “Both the franchisee and franchisor, after all, share the same goals – satisfied customers, quality products and services, and a thriving business.”

Remarkable growth noted in brands

Maio has complete confidence in his company’s systems and is a testament to the franchise management models he has refined over the years. He currently owns six stores under the franchise umbrellas of ACDC Express and Titan Electrical, just two of the many businesses that have seen substantial growth during some of the country’s most challenging economic times. ACDC Express, an electrical retailer, operates stores across South Africa and recorded a striking 65% growth during the country’s lockdown resulting from the recent pandemic and beyond – a period marked by ongoing load shedding. The ACDC Express brand is an electrical product supplier with a national footprint, offering over 40 stores nationwide and is rapidly growing as this becomes a franchise brand to watch. Another of the brands under Infinity’s management that continues to grow is Titan

again. They can pre-empt challenges and offer solutions before they escalate,” says Maio. The support extends beyond a single business area; it spans from IT troubleshooting and managing Internal Relations, to marketing strategies and shared advertising spend. “Whether you wish to join an existing brand or have a start-up idea that you want to grow, Infinity has the support that you need in all matters of franchising. Our business development team, with a wealth of experience and expertise, can help you take your concept to market and grow it into a successful franchising opportunity,” Maio adds.

Both ACDC Express and Titan Electrical provide essential services in a business climate that demands reliable electricity and energy solutions, perfectly complementing each other, with ACDC being the supplier and Titan the service provider; offering greater value for the business owner and client alike.

Maio is clear that franchising is not for everyone. “It requires dedication, a willingness to work within the parameters of a proven system, and a co-operative spirit,” he notes.

The remarkable growth noted in the brands is attributed to more than merely offering the right products at the right time. It is a result of nurtured and refined business processes and the robust support structure offered by Infinity Brands.

“We don’t just offer a business model; we offer a pathway to personal and financial growth and excellence.”

Demystifying challenges for the brands’ audiences

Beyond the financial metrics, Infinity Brands invested significantly in demystifying challenges for the brands’ audiences through supportive advertising, informative blog posts, educational videos, how-to guides, infographics, and so much more. The comprehensive support, marketing, and communication approach transformed public fear into customer empowerment. “People were scared when load shedding started. There was uncertainty about the unknown. We needed to get ahead of that, so we worked to educate customers and staff about all these systems. We had to break down systems and jargon into something everyone could understand,” says Maio.

Holistic understanding of business practice

Setting Infinity Brands apart is the holistic understanding of business practice. Starting a business venture can be a daunting task fraught with unaccounted-for pitfalls. SAVING MONEY

“YOU CAN DO IT...” 82 INBOUNDSA / November 2023

PERSONAL FINANCE

IN TODAY’S UNPREDICTABLE GLOBAL LANDSCAPE, ECONOMIC CHALLENGES HAVE BECOME A RECURRING THEME AFFECTING INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND NATIONS ALIKE. ALTHOUGH THE WORLD IS CURRENTLY GRAPPLING WITH A MULTITUDE OF ECONOMIC HURDLES THAT DEMAND ATTENTION AND PROACTIVE RESPONSE, THE IMPACTS ARE FELT DIRECTLY WITHIN OUR HOMES REQUIRING OUR ATTENTION AND FOCUS, WRITES INTERNATIONAL SPEAKER AND FINANCIAL TRANSFORMATION STRATEGIST IN CHICAGO, USA, ROBBIE MATHEWS.

B

ecause of the current challenging economic times, it’s more crucial than ever to prioritise financial stability and savings. But rising inflation and interest rates, job market instability, pandemic-related illnesses, and unexpected expenses can make financial security seem like an elusive goal. However, there are effective strategies you can use today to build and protect your financial future. With these strategies and an unwavering commitment to smart financial planning, you can still save money and build a strong financial foundation, even in these challenging times.

Let’s explore four actionable steps to help you save money, even in tough times: 1. Create a spending plan and stick to it

The foundation of any successful savings plan is a well-structured budget. Right? Wrong, I don’t believe in budgeting because it implies imposing restrictions and limitations. I advocate for creating a ‘spending plan’ because we all love to spend but hate to budget. The key is to spend on things that bring value today and in the future. Start by looking at your monthly income and expenses. Categorize your expenses into essential and nonessential items. When shopping for essentials, look for sales, and discounts, use coupons, and consider buying the generic version. Identify non-essential items you can cut (e.g., impulse purchases, keeping up with the celebrity lifestyle) and reallocate those funds to your savings. Stick to your spending plan religiously to ensure you’re not overspending.

2. Establish an emergency fund

Establishing an emergency fund is a financial safety net that can provide peace of mind during uncertain times. Aim to save at least three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a separate savings account.

3. Reduce credit card debt

It is understandable that many of us have had to turn to using credit cards just to survive. Unfortunately, high-interest debt can be a significant obstacle to saving and financial stability. Focus on paying off high-interest credit cards, as quickly as possible.

4. Make more money

Look for opportunities to earn extra income, such as asking for a promotion, finding a better job, freelancing, part-time work, or selling items you no longer need. Supplementing your income can significantly boost your savings. And you can use your newly found funds from your spending and debt reductions to start or increase your emergency fund savings.

Saving money is not just about surviving but thriving

In conclusion, in these tough economic circumstances, saving money will require some sacrifices, discipline, smart choices, and a shift in financial mindset. However, by implementing these strategies and maintaining discipline as a start, you can begin to build a more secure financial future for yourself and your family. Saving money is not just about surviving but thriving in challenging times, and it starts with taking small proactive steps today. IB November 2023 / INBOUNDSA 83

THE WORLD HAS RECOVERED, AND SOUTH AFRICA’S PASSENGER AVIATION MARKET IS STEADILY CLIMBING. IN JUNE 2023, TICKET SALES WERE REPORTEDLY 80% IN A POST COVID-19 ECONOMIC CLIMATE. NOW, AS WE APPROACH THE HOLIDAY SEASON, THIS NUMBER HAS INCREASED BY 5%, SAYS JONATHAN AYACHE, CEO OF LIFT AIRLINES.

T

he aviation sector experienced negative effects from the Covid-19 pandemic. Airlines were struggling and laid off thousands of employees. Airports were not enjoying the foot traffic needed to sustain their operations. Travelers lost confidence in air travel and resorted to online meetings instead. Then a new airline, LIFT, entered the skies during lockdown, and seems to be growing as more passengers book seats.

negative effect on people’s pockets. They think twice about buying tickets. “It still remains a challenging environment and I think a lot of that is due to the macro economic challenges we have in this country. We have loadshedding. We’ve got increasing interest rates. We’ve got huge amounts of pressure on consumer’s wallets. There is a lot of unique pressures on South Africans that are slowing things down.” But there is certainly hope, he adds. “Things are slower, but we are recovering.”

In an interview with INBOUND SA, Ayache says he remains optimistic that South Africa’s aviation sector will recover in full and already has expansion plans for their fleet.

Ayache says people are now smarter than before. Where they used to fly for a meeting and then another one a week later, they try to set up a few meetings on one trip.

However, the problem with the current situation, he says, is the high interest rate is having a

Padcaster Verse

TURNING ANY SMARTPHONE INTO A FULL-PRODUCTION VIDEO CAMERA By Dean McCoubrey

IN THE 18-MONTH AFTERMATH OF THE PANDEMIC, MANY MADE THE VERY BEST OF A BAD SITUATION AND TRANSFORMED THEIR SPARE BEDROOMS TO OFFICES, DELIVERING WEBINARS, VLOGS, ONLINE COURSES AND MORE. THESE DAYS ALMOST EVERYONE IS, OR AT LEAST HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE, A SELF-PUBLISHER, COURSE CREATOR OR INFLUENCER.

T

his pivot (sorry to use the most overused term of 2020) has coincided with the smart device’s revolution in quality, and even affordability. We are seeing the new iPhone 12 for those who can afford, or new smart device entrants like Vivo or Oppo.

Padcaster Verse, efficient and versatile

Interestingly, alongside the host of functions and bonuses that have launched, Apple’s new iPhone 15 has been declared as most robust. These phones may not meet the premium standard of a high spec video camera, but what they can do in a small package, without being too fragile, is changing the game in the video and mobile journalism industry. It is no secret in the industry that social media content, online courses, or other storytelling formats require a steady camera, good sound, and the right lighting.

One such neat bundle of efficiency is the Padcaster Verse mobile media kit for smartphones. It is an intelligent turnkey solution for filmmakers, video bloggers, mobile journalists, photographers, educators, livestreamers and content creators everywhere.

86 INBOUNDSA / November 2023

But increasingly, it also requires flexibility and mobility, so portability of a microphone and light is mighty useful if you are trying to offer the services akin to a professional-grade production studio.

Complete with a rugged Grip and Cage, Verse is a perfect fit in two hands or one. No fidgeting. No fuss. Click in, record, click out, edit. In other words, for most people that have been forced to

TECH REVIEW

adapt in the pandemic. It allows for a large range of smartphone sizes and can even stay in the phone’s case if you prefer. When I reviewed an Osmo Plus last year, I tightened the smartphone into the clamp too tightly and it cracked the (hideously expensive) glass case of the phone. The grip, which fits the hand well, doesn’t have to stand inside the frame only, but can be added to the top of your fluid tripod if you prefer. The modularity of the design and function of the kit has been intelligently thought through. Its mini microphone comes with a professional looking outdoor windscreen, as well as TRS and TRRS cables too, meaning it can be used on smartphones and DSLR and audio recorders, and requires no batteries. The kit comes with an XPod and a GPod, with the Xpod acting as the hero stand, and allowing the three legs to be clutched together to create a pistol grip. One of the stand’s three legs has USB charging, which delivers power from a stored 3300mAh battery. Given the failing battery life of my iPhone XS Max, now older than 18 months, it’s proven to be rather handy. The second USB port can be used for other accessories, including a rather cute microlight to help you see your way around, although it isn’t strong enough for lighting a subject’s face. (The flexible GPod works nicely, but is more for uneven surfaces, or to wrap around something, but I haven’t needed to use it that much). It has 12 standard threads and four cold shoe mounts to add accessories, as well as a safety button to lock the smartphone into place, and robust claws that are tightened onto rubber pads so that your phone isn’t damaged.

Slick and intelligent

All in all, I have been greatly impressed by the slick intelligence of how this kit functions. So far, I have used it to create a media education course as well as for vlogs on LinkedIn. I’ve even used it

to handle a Zoom call with a client in China while sitting on the side of the road during a business trip. Mobility and flexibility may well prove to be the goose that lays the golden egg this decade. The very reason for the easy demise of the office over the past year. Who would have guessed it? But there’s an additional kicker. Lockdown has also improved the output and service of many ecommerce suppliers. For this review, I worked with Padcaster in the US who were very welcoming and open, and interacted with their local distributor, Pro Gear South Africa, who were communicative, efficient and punctual. I twice commended them by email for their highly responsive agility. You can’t say that happens every day. IB November 2023 / INBOUNDSA 87

Tight BUDGET for your event? NO PROBLEM… HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO

DECORATING FOR AN EVENT CAN BE VERY PRICEY, BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE. HERE ARE SOME SIMPLE TIPS AND TRICKS TO HELP DECORATE ON A BUDGET WHILE MAINTAINING THAT MILLION-DOLLAR STYLE, WRITES JOHANNESBURG-BASED EVENTS PLANNER, KENEILWE LEKOPA.

1 2 3 4 5

DIY centrepieces

Create your own centrepieces using affordable materials like candles, mason jars, or simple vases. Fill them with inexpensive flowers, pebbles, or coloured sand to match your event theme.

Fabric draping

Use inexpensive fabric to drape walls, ceilings, or tables. This can instantly transform the look of a space and create a cohesive theme.

Minimalistic elegance

Sometimes less is more. Embrace a minimalistic approach to decor by focusing on a few key elements. A well-placed banner, some strategically chosen colours, and a couple of eye-catching details can go a long way.

Candles and tea lights

Candles can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Buy them in bulk or use LED tea lights for a safe and budgetfriendly option.

Photo booth backdrop

Create a DIY photo booth backdrop using a bedsheet, a curtain, or even a large piece of cardboard. Add some props, and your guests will have a blast taking pictures.

Repurpose and upcycle

When selecting flowers for a corporate event, opt for clean, simple, and elegant blooms that convey professionalism. Classic choices include white lilies, roses, orchids, and tulips. These flowers project a sophisticated and understated image that’s suitable for a corporate setting.

Look around your home or thrift stores for items you can repurpose as decor. Old picture frames, wooden crates, or even fabric scraps can be transformed into decorative elements.

é D Scent considerations

Be mindful of the fragrance of the flowers. Some people are sensitive to strong floral scents, so it’s best to use flowers with a mild or neutral scent. Alternatively, consider using unscented silk or artificial flowers for a worry-free option.

DÉCOR

9 10

Keep arrangements low and unobtrusive

Corporate event floral arrangements should not obstruct views or hinder communication. Use low and compact arrangements for centrepieces to allow guests to comfortably interact across the table. Tall, extravagant arrangements may be distracting in a business setting.

11

Minimalistic and modern designs

Embrace a minimalistic and modern design approach. Incorporate sleek vases or containers and arrange flowers in a structured and symmetrical manner. This clean and contemporary style aligns well with corporate aesthetics.

Consider company colours

Incorporate the company’s brand colours into the floral arrangements. This can be done through the choice of flowers, vase colours, or ribbon accents. It helps reinforce the company’s identity and makes the decor feel more personalized. IB
