While many people generally wait for the summer to get out and about, we are fortunate to live in South Africa and have relatively good weather all year around. However, that being said, there is something special about summer here – including a carefree hype that permeates the air. Some amazing escapes to check out include exploring our incredible landscapes and wildlife. The article on page 16 highlights some of our national parks that will resonate with nature enthusiasts. Looking for some relaxation with fantastic wine and food? With so many options, we have you covered with Unique Wine Farms (page 56), a review on Cape Point Vineyards (page 12), and much more. While this season is super eventful, the end and beginning of a year are a great time for reflection. In today’s world, we are always on the go – even when we are relaxing. Don’t get me wrong, I think technology and being connected is amazing, however, we sometimes forget to unwind properly. Sometimes, while on a break I am so focused on capturing the perfect picture that I forget to fully immerse myself in the experience of being out somewhere special. Check out the article on page 50 that focuses on incorporating mindfulness into your lifestyle. Bush or beach – whatever you choose to do this summer, have an amazing time! (Check out the article on page 78 that highlights some really unique experiences in Africa.) A happy and safe summer season to all Rovers!

TRAVEL TIPS

Stay safe in summer
Avoid displays of expensive items such as jewellery, lots of cash and other valuables. Avoid keeping a wallet in your back pocket – it is advisable to rather keep it in a closed bag. Also try not to carry huge amounts of cash with you as most places accept cards. Don’t leave items unattended. While in a vehicle don’t unroll your windows down completely– sometimes opportunistic crimes occur like snatching a bag from an open window. Always be aware of your surroundings. Plan ahead: know the areas you are going to. It’s also a good idea to alert friends and family where you are going.

Tips to avoid ‘airplane ear’ (worth a try…)
Yawn and swallow during ascent and descent. Chew a sweet or gum. Try pinching your nostrils and gently blow – repeat a few times. Check with a pharmacist or doctor if you are able to use decongestant pills or a nasal spray.
Alcohol dehydration danger
For many the summer season and cocktails go hand in hand. But be aware of potential dehydration risks. Being outdoors for prolonged hours – such as lounging on a beach or having a picnic outdoors – already puts you at risk of dehydration. Alcohol increases that risk as it reduces the release of vasopressin that helps keep your body balanced. Additionally, alcohol is a diuretic which results in loss of more fluid through urination. To help counteract this, it is advisable to also drink water when consuming alcoholic beverages.

Here are some signs to look out for: • high body temperature • an altered mental state such as confusion, agitation, slurred speech, irritability, delirium, seizures • poor balance and light headedness • nausea and vomiting • flushed skin • breathing may become rapid and shallow • increased heart rate • headache

Malaria
Sub-Saharan Africa has some of the highest malaria rates in the world according to reports. It’s a good idea to check ahead whether your destination is a malaria high-risk area and take the necessary precautions. Your doctor or pharmacist will be able to give you guidance about medications to take prior and/or during your travels to a malaria area. Prophylactic medicines are generally available without prescription, which is generally taken a couple days prior to travelling and taken daily without interruption while in the malaria area, and another seven days or more afterwards. Other precautionary measures include using mosquito nets and mosquito repellents.

TRAVEL TIPS
Check out the tides Prior to swimming in the ocean, check either the boards or online if it is high or low tide.
Flying with kiddos
Pack a comfort item. This could be a favourite teddy bear, blanket or dummy that helps to soothe your child. Be sure to have a sufficient supply of wipes, pull-ups, diapers, some spare clothing and medication. Even if you are potty training, it’s a good idea to use a pull-up for the plane ride. Disinfect everything – often children tend to eat directly off the pull-out table. If your child is old enough, it might be a good idea to forgo screen time rules. Ensure all your child’s favourite games and movies are loaded, as well as ensuring your devices are fully charged. There is a good chance your child is a picky eater, so it’s best to pack in meals and snacks for them. For take-off and landing, give your child a bottle or breastfeed as the swallowing action might help equalise their ears. Avoid letting the child sit in the aisle seat as they can easily make a run for it down the aisle. Airports are busy places. Ensure your contact details are with your kids. Alternatively, also invest in a tracker. If you are travelling with another adult, split the responsibilities; one adult handles the boarding passes while the other watches the kids. Cape Point Vineyards: the best of all worlds…
MORE THAN JUST A WINE ESTATE, CAPE POINT VINEYARDS OFFERS THE BEST OF ALL WORLDS – BUSH, BEACH, WINE, CUISINE, AND RELAXATION WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS… By Tashne Singh
O
n a bright summer day, the Rove SA team hit the road for a scenic sojourn to Cape Point Vineyards in the idyllic coastal village of Noordhoek.
The first thing visitors will notice when arriving at Cape Point Vineyards is that the view is spectacular. Manicured lawns look out towards the huge koi pond, the vineyards to the right, rocky hills with flora to the left and the ocean straight ahead.
There are indoor and outdoor seating areas, but even if you choose to sit indoors, large sliding doors open out onto a terrace giving guests scenic views and the feeling of being outdoors.
The wine-and-dine experience
A refreshed look
After a brief walkabout – one simply must take photos at the massive koi pond – we head indoors to partake in an oyster and wine pairing. Guests also have the option to do a sushi and wine pairing.
The recent renovation at Cape Point Vineyards highlights earthy tones that blend in seamlessly with the natural surrounds artlessly creating a chic yet free-flowing aesthetic. The new look is modern yet classic.
The wines have a fresh crispness to them – testament to the nearby coastal environment that pairs exceptionally well with the oysters.

Now I will confess, I like oysters but am not mad about them. However, this experience changed my mind. The apple, ponzu, pickled ginger and miso mayo oyster was simply superb. Delicate flavours burst through, creating a happy dance on the palate. Having done the tasting, I was excited to try out the food menu. The chef did not disappoint – the starters, mains and dessert were all artfully presented. When questioned about the aesthetic, the chef noted that people “eat with their eyes first”. there are activities to keep kids entertained, such as a designated play area and freshly made icecream that everyone loves. A great way to spend a Thursday afternoon is to visit the Cape Point Vineyards Food Market from 16:30 to 20:30. The vibe is chilled and colourful. People bring blankets and picnic while enjoying the view, kids run around, and of course there are loads of gastronomic delights on offer at the market to suit every palate. It’s not just a food market – locals in the area showcase custom-made jewellery, clothing, home décor, soaps and oils and much more, so it’s also a great opportunity to shop for something novel.
A relaxed escape
From a taste perspective, flavours are complementary, balanced and filling. The restaurant also caters for different dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free). Good to note is that the restaurant has a decent cocktail menu, which is perfect for sundowners.
A sense of community While the wine estate has undergone massive changes aesthetically, it still retains that welcoming feel. As the Marketing Manager Isliedh Herbert explains: “Many of us who work here have grown up together. It is probably the bond that we have that enables this atmosphere we have created here, which promotes togetherness.” As a family-owned estate, Cape Point Vineyards has created an environment that caters to everyone – you can visit solo, with friends or family. For parents, it is a great spot as
Being at Cape Point Vineyards brought forth a sense of nostalgia – memories rushed forward of younger days when I used to regularly frequent spots on this side of the world. Years have passed but the area still retains its essence of beauty, relaxation, and a sense of community where people are warm and welcoming without being obtrusive. Cape Point Vineyards echoes these sentiments – it’s definitely a top spot for people who enjoy nature, wine and great company.

SOUTH AFRICA IS HOME TO ARGUABLY SOME OF THE MOST MAJESTIC WILDLIFE THE WORLD HAS TO OFFER. ADDED TO THIS, OUR NATIONAL PARKS DON’T JUST BOAST INCREDIBLE LANDSCAPES, FAUNA, FLORA AND ACTIVITIES, BUT ALSO HAVE A RICH HISTORICAL LEGACY.
Addo Elephant National Park: Eastern Cape
The third largest national park in South Africa was established in 1931 to protect the last remaining elephants in the region. Over the years it has expanded to include a diverse wildlife population including lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalos, and hyenas. It also lays claim to the fact that it is the only national park in the world to boast the title of “Home to the Big 7” – including the Southern Right Whale and Great White Shark in the Addo Marine Protected Area.
Top 3 highlights: 1. 2. 3.
The park has one of the highest concentrations of African elephants in the world, with a population of over 700 elephants to view from the comfort of one’s own vehicle or on a guided game drive. The two-day Alexandria hiking trail traverses the contrast of desert-like dunes with spectacular untouched beaches and lush indigenous forest. Addo Elephant National Park has one of the largest populations of flightless dung beetles. Guests are cautioned not to drive over elephant dung as it is used by the dung beetle for food and reproduction. An elephant can eat as much as 300kg of food per day, which translates to about 100kg of dung. One dung pad can contain as many as 30 beetles, and they play a vital role in composting the park.

Mountain Zebra National Park: Eastern Cape
It was proclaimed a national park in 1937 for the purpose of protecting a remnant population of the Cape Mountain Zebra. At the time, it was estimated that fewer than 100 Cape Mountain Zebra survived in South Africa. There are now well over 1 000 of these animals in the park. Over the years, it has grown beyond a “species park” to focus on conserving the biodiversity of the region, reintroducing cheetah, lion, brown hyena, buffalo and black rhino to the area.

Mountain Zebra National Park is the only national park that offers a cheetah tracking activity. It sees guests going out in the morning on a game drive with an armed field guide, who tracks one of the collared cheetah’s whereabouts with a telemetry device. Once a strong signal is found, guests go out on foot to within a few metres of a cheetah in its natural environment. The park is rich in cultural heritage. A guided tour of the San cave paintings can be booked at reception. The San people painted animals such as eland, baboon, hartebeest, and what appears to be a cheetah at the site. A human figure is also depicted at a small natural shelter, which would have been used by the San people, and can be found near the paintings. What is now the Doornhoek Guest House was constructed in 1838, one of the first permanent farmhouses in the area. The farm became a part of the park in 1964 and the building was declared a national monument in 1986. It has since been restored as a guest house. In September 2013 it burnt down due to an electrical fault. It was refurbished in 2015, with the original-style yellowwood floors and ceilings reinstated. It is popular with those who want a tranquil family getaway overlooking a lake, with spectacular stargazing vistas at night.

Garden Route National Park: Western and Eastern Cape Along the South Coast of South Africa, between George and Port Elizabeth lies one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world, home to the Garden Route National Park. It encompasses the world renowned Tsitsikamma, Wilderness and Knysna areas, a variety of mountain catchments, indigenous forests and fynbos areas, all valued for their diverse natural and cultural heritage.

The grassland biome is home to a myriad of plant and bird species found nowhere else in the country. The vegetation supports healthy populations of herbivores including eland, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, blesbok, zebra, grey rheebuck, mount reedbuck, and springbok. The park has no dangerous animals, which means that guests get to see the large antelope on game drives or on foot on a range of hiking trails. An unforgettable cultural experience awaits visitors at the Basotho Cultural Village located within the park. Here authentic Basotho homes across the eras have been lovingly reconstructed as part of an outdoor museum experience. Guides entertain visitors with stories and explanations of the Basotho cultural systems through the ages and how these affected the development of the different homes. Guests get to understand the materials used for making the homes and clothing; and even get to taste the traditional food and drink of the Basotho. The park has an interesting dinosaur heritage that is of international significance. The fossils, footprints, and a unique dinosaur nest with eggs and embryos intact have rocked the international palaeontological world. Even the rock formations are of global interest and attract equal attention to the ancient history of this area. For these reasons, a dinosaur interpretation centre has been built in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Exhibits are being designed and built and it is anticipated that the centre will be open to the public by October 2024.

Augrabies Falls National Park: Northern Cape
The Augrabies Falls National Park is located in the Northern Cape, approximately 120km west of Upington and 40km west of Kakamas, along the southern edge of the Kalahari and the eastern border of Namibia. The park encompasses approximately 51 113 hectares, with the Orange River forming the northern border. It marks the place where the Orange River changes from a wide, slow-flowing river traversing sandy soil to a fastflowing, narrow river cutting through ancient granite. The mighty Orange River in the eastern parts of Augrabies Falls National Park forms a system of braided channels before cascading down an abyss approximately 90 metres high, with a 56-metre freefall. Downstream from the falls the river flows through a narrow gorge forming a linear oasis through the otherwise barren landscape. This sight and sound of the water convey a sense of power not easily forgotten. Its name, Augrabies, is aptly derived from the Khoi word Aukoerebis which means ‘the place of great noise’. The park offers a sanctuary to far more than just the waterfalls – diverse plant life, invertebrates, reptiles, fish, birds, and mammals call this home.

It is one of the few places in Africa that has both meerkats and Nile crocodiles. Mapungubwe National Park is renowned for its scenic landscape, with sandstone formations, woodlands, riverine forest, and baobab trees. The Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is protected and conserved as it shows the history and culture of the first indigenous kingdom in Southern Africa that existed between 900 and 1300 AD. The kingdom was rich and powerful trading gold, ivory, and other commodities with other countries through the East African ports. The kingdom also had a complex social and political structure, with a sacred king who was separated from the commoners. The kingdom collapsed due to climate change, which made the land less fertile and unable to support a large population. The Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape preserves the archaeological remains of the palace sites, the settlements, and the artifacts that reveal the life and achievements of this ancient civilization. ROUTE 66, WHICH TRAVERSED THE AMERICAN MIDWEST BETWEEN THE 1930S AND 1960S, SUPPORTING SMALL TOWNS AND INSPIRING MUSIC, NOVELS, AND MOVIES, NOW HAS AN AFRICAN VERSION – ONE WHICH STILL ECHOES WITH THE HISTORICAL DRUMBEATS OF THE ZULU KINGDOM.
W
inding its way for 250km through the sugar cane clad hills of northern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) through the now bustling towns of Gingindlovu, Eshowe, Melmoth, Ulundi, Nongoma, Mtunzini and Phongolo, KZN’s Route 66 was one of the oldest trade routes traversed on horse and ox wagon by transport riders, missionaries, soldiers and farmers. The busy highway – now known as the R66 – still ferries everything from sugar cane to groceries, and everyone from school children to businessmen to the busy N2 highway that links up with the world class ports of Durban and Richards Bay.
Route 66 is perfect for history buffs and nature lovers alike But it also provides curious travellers with the perfect way to explore the very same place that was home to the iconic King Shaka Zulu, who has captured the imagination of the world and inspired television epics like Shaka Ilembe as well as novels and films. It is anchored by the town of Eshowe. Visit Fort Nongqayi, a picturesque turreted white structure that was originally built by the British in 1883. The precinct includes the Mission Museum which pays tribute to the early Norwegian Christian missionaries and the Vukani Museum of Zulu Art and Culture which showcases some of the province’s best pieces of pottery and basketry. Wilderness Beach, Herold’s Bay, and Victoria Bay already hold Blue Flag status, with Leentjiesklip Beach on pilot Blue Flag status, which makes the region’s pristine beaches an obvious attraction. However, if sand castles and waves are not your thing, then head inland to the Klein Karoo.

Uniondale Take in the views of George from the dizzying heights of the Outeniqua Mountain Pass viewpoint, then head to the sculpture garden of eccentric local artist, Sheena Ridley, in the Langkloof Valley, to view her stunning selection of sculptures, pastels, and oil paintings. Further into the Klein Karoo lies Uniondale, which has most recently become the starting point of the Pilgrimage of Hope. Hop on a tuk-tuk to explore the rich history of this quaint town. Remember to view the chilling sculpture of the famous

Uniondale ghost before you leave. Between Uniondale and Oudtshoorn, in the town of Herold, lies Louvain Guest Farm. With accommodation options for families of all shapes and sizes, Louvain boasts old homestead cottages, campsites, and modern glamping spots. Enjoy poolside drinks by day, the sound of meat sizzling over the fire at night, and late-night stargazing. This working farm not only doubles as a wedding venue and plays host to national horse-riding events, but also offers numerous 4x4, hiking, biking, and horse trails. Finish off the stay with an early morning microlight flight, followed by a hike to cave systems with paintings by indigenous peoples dating back thousands of years.
Wilderness Kayaking along the Kaaiman’s River to a secluded waterfall is an intensely romantic outing for young lovers, as well as a fun-filled family activity that encourages teamwork. For the more adventurous traveller, take a drive up to the Map of Africa viewpoint for a paragliding flight. With a team of professional instructors, FlyTime Paragliding has pilots who have been paragliding for more than 40 years, which is why my 8-year-old daughter was able to take to the skies without breaking a sweat. Few things can top the feeling of soaring above the beach, the winding freeway, the mouth of the Kaaiman’s River, and the railway bridge over which the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train once proudly rattled. The majestic views and the exhilaration will settle anyone into holiday mode.
Arrange for The Wilderness Picnic Company to drop off one of their bountiful picnic baskets at the Ebb and Flow Rest Camp inside the Wilderness National Park. The Waterfall Picnicfor-2 includes mozzarella and rocket paninis, sorghum and Mediterranean salads (with the best olives I’ve ever tasted), sweet potato and chickpea hummus, seed crisps, delectable chocolate brownies, trail mix snack packs, biltong, and more. A gentle hike along the beautiful Kingfisher Trail will draw hikers into the magical fantasy world of the surrounding forests, which seem to roll on without end. Accommodation can be found in the park, ranging from riverside caravan or camping sites with ablution blocks, and secluded forest cabins, to self-catering and wheelchair-friendly family cottages. After checking in, book a boat cruise on the Touws River, a shallow body of water that curls around the national park and the greater Wilderness area like a brown snake. Be on the lookout for Egyptian geese with goslings in tow, novice fishermen draped over skiffs while angling for steenbras or other saltwater fish that swim up from the river mouth, and the 400-year-old Yellowwood trees looming over the river like tall green giants. For supper, visit Salinas Beach Restaurant just down the road. Expect a warm Italian reception, with ample seating spread across two floors and a large play ship for kids to explore. With a varied cuisine that includes burgers, beer-battered fish and chips, butter chicken, and sushi, they cater for everyone. George Located near the base of the Outeniqua mountain range, the Hawthorn Hotel was established in the 1940s and has since become a landmark in George. However, after a period of neglect, the hotel, under new ownership, launched a mammoth renovation project that would see the Hawthorn reclaim its landmark status. From reception to room service to restaurant, there is an immaculate attention to detail throughout. A friendly staff member is always available and willing to assist. The variety of rooms includes garden studios, manor suites, and deluxe
rooms. With an onsite restaurant, a pool, and colourful (and loud) peacocks about, the kids also loved their stay at the Hawthorn. To tickle our taste buds, we visited Donegal Wine Estate and enjoyed a surprisingly light Chardonnay and a fun Grenache. In 2018 Donegal bottled a complex Shiraz that earned them a Veritas Gold, but in 2022 they secured the elusive Veritas Double Gold for their Vic Bay red blend. While in Victoria Bay, grab an ice cream and take a stroll on the beach before heading back to the Outeniqua Transport Museum. Here visitors will find steam locomotives and coaches dating back to 1889, as well as a selection of vintage cars stored on the premises by local classic car enthusiasts. Switch out the trip to the museum for a round of golf at the George Golf Club, ranked one of the country’s best courses, or a quick coffee at local bistros in the heart of town. The Redberry Farm is a strawberry farm located near the George airport. As an events venue and popular Garden Route tourist attraction, the Redberry Farm boasts restaurants like The Noshery Pizzeria & Deli, a Boplaas wine tasting room, and accommodation, which makes it a full-day experience. Activities include pedal go-carts, bumper boats, playgrounds, pony rides, a hedge maze with a secret tunnel, a Redberry Express train, an expansive curio shop, and a giant strawberry that leads up to a lookout point from which visitors can see the surrounding strawberry fields and the mesmerizing mountains. Finish off the day in style with a meal at The Apprentice, a deluxe eatery and culinary school, which is the legacy of celebrity chef, Francois Ferreira, who passed away earlier in 2023. The menu is a gastronomic masterpiece, with meals prepared by apprentice chefs enrolled at the Francois Ferreira Academy. A crumbed, baked Camembert starter that starts melting once cutting into the heart of it, a lamb shank that slides off the bone at the slightest touch, kiddies milkshakes textured to perfection, and a chocolate panna cotta that screams of unquestionable consistency, are examples of the delicacies on offer. With such a varied offering and a flourishing hospitalityminded tourism industry, it’s no coincidence that George has been dubbed the city for all reasons. So, whatever the reason for visiting George, let the inviting nature of the locals and the scenic beauty of the Garden Route whisk you away on a memorable holiday.

Cape Town is regularly cited as a top destination, with notable sites such as Table Mountain, Robben Island and so much more. These are some of our faves…

The Skeleton Gorge hike starts at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and takes hikers through an almost jungle-like landscape. Eventually hikers will arrive at Maclear’s Beacon at the summit and then have a few options for getting down the steep descent, including riding the Table Mountain cable way. If you are looking for something a bit more laid-back enjoy a picnic in a stunning setting at the gardens – or check out the Kirstenbosch summer concerts line-up.

On the road, the Isuzu mu-X 3.0 is steady and handles well on tar and offroad. It drives a bit like a new-age double cab, complemented by the softer feel of an SUV. Fuel consumption is decent for its class – around 8 to 9 litres per 100km. The only thing that took a bit of getting used to was parking as it is a large vehicle, but cameras and sensors assist with this. It also has features such as lane assist, hill start assist, hill descent control, and so forth. f you are looking for an ideal fragrance for summer, look for a fragrance that has notes of citrus, such as lemon, orange, grapefruit, bergamot, and cucumber. Soft notes of rose, jasmine, and lavender add a romantic element to the fragrance. Notes that are also great for a summer fragrance are ginger, coriander, and pink pepper, giving the scent a soft spicy feel. If you are looking for a marine-type fragrance, consider red berries, coconut, and coconut water notes. The interesting thing about fragrances today is that there are no hard and fast rules about what you wear across the seasons. You get to choose what suits your lifestyle and occasion, even though we suggest a bright uplifting, and joyful fragrance in summer.
How do you choose the strength of a fragrance, and what does it all mean? Eau de toilette is lighter and has at least a 15% concentration and will last up to four hours, while eau de parfum is rich and has a 20% concentration and will last up to six hours. We recommend eau de toilette for great everyday wear for the office or at home, while eau de parfum has more depth, which is great for occasions like a date night or meeting up for drinks after work, or just a night out on the town.

The floral person is a hopeless romantic, gentle and kind. The citrus or fresh person is energetic, loves to exercise, and enjoys the outdoors. The Fougere (meaning "fern" in French) person is a night owl who loves the sound of silence and is happy to curl up on the couch with a good book. The woody person is passionate about life and enjoys socialising. The oriental person stands out in a crowd and is exotic and alluring. People are drawn to a gourmand (meaning a person who takes great pleasure in good food) person, and they love to be the centre of attention. The chypre (sandalwood) person loves to dazzle, but at the same time is a no-nonsense person. The oud (musky) person likes to shine; we turn to look at them when they enter a room.
For women… • Jimmy Choo Rose Passion Eau de Parfum: The freshness in the opening notes of coconut water and frangipani is delightful and you will also discover notes of orchard and jasmine in the heart which is complemented by sandalwood and vanilla in the base. • DKNY Orchard Street Eau de Parfum: This is a vibrant fruity, floral, woody fragrance with a crisp opening of pink lady apple and grapefruit. There is an elegant heart of jasmine, black currant, raspberry, and pomegranate with a textured base of cedarwood and leather. • Rochas Byzance Eau de Parfum: This delicious fragrance opens bright with bergamot, neroli, and pear with a rich floral heart of freesia, heliotrope, and rose in the heart. The smooth base of wood and vanilla makes the fragrance warm. • Montblanc Signature Absolu Eau de Parfum: This fresh sparkling perfume has mandarin, pear, and pink pepper in the opening notes with opulent notes of tuberose, frangipani, and ylang-ylang in the heart. This is rounded off with a trail of tonka bean and cedar in the base. • Abercrombie & Fitch Authentic Self Eau de Parfum: A lively opening of lemon zest, red currant, and juicy pear is accompanied by cheerful jasmine petals, freesia, and lily of the valley with a base of cedarwood, sandalwood, and musk.
For men… • Abercrombie & Fitch Authentic Self Eau de Toilette: A vibrant opening of ginger, cypress, and cardamom and a majestic heart of freesia, violet leaf, and geranium followed by a magnetic base of vanilla, cedar, and tonka bean. • Montblanc Explorer Platinum Eau de Parfum: A freshness of violet leaf at the top and herbiness of clay sage and the warmth of cedarwood in the base. • Guess Uomo Acqua Eau de Toilette: It has characteristics of the sea with lemon, cardamom, and cucumber in the opening. The heart has sage, cypress, and juniper and the base has salted seaweed, sandalwood, and Palo Santo. • Jaguar Classic Gold Eau de Toilette: It opens bright with apple, lime, and bergamot with an almost floral heart of orange blossom and teak wood. A warm base of patchouli, vanilla, and musk round off the fragrance well. • Boucheron Singulier Eau de Parfum: An uplifting opening of bergamot, grapefruit, and juniper with a heart of lavender, geranium, and sage. A warm woody base of cedar, vetiver, and patchouli. • Lapidus Pour Homme Cool Night Eau de Parfum: An invigorating fruity opening with bergamot, grapefruit, apple, and pineapple. This is followed by a rich, warm heart of lavender, rosemary, and patchouli and grounded leather, moss, tonka bean, and musk.

MENTAL HEALTH
Embracing mindfulness:
a path to inner harmony and well-being By Arthur Britz, Mindfulness Teacher
IN A FAST-PACED WORLD BRIMMING WITH TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS AND ENDLESS DISTRACTIONS, FINDING MOMENTS OF PEACE AND CLARITY HAS BECOME AN ART.

MENTAL HEALTH
Initiating the practice
Benefits of mindfulness
To embark upon the path of mindfulness, one can start with simple yet powerful techniques. The foundation lies in conscious breathing, where we focus our attention on the sensation of each inhale and exhale. This anchors us in the present moment, gently guiding our awareness away from incessant mental chatter.
1. Mental well-being: In our modern world, mental health has become a pressing concern. Mindfulness serves as a powerful tool to alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression. By observing our thoughts and emotions with nonjudgmental awareness, we develop a greater capacity to respond rather than react impulsively. This cultivates emotional resilience and fosters a more positive outlook on life.
Another effective technique is body scan meditation. By systematically directing attention to different parts of the body, we develop a profound connection with our physical sensations, fostering a deep sense of relaxation and embodiment.
Incorporating mindfulness into daily life Mindfulness is not confined to formal meditation practice alone. It is a way of being that can be infused into our everyday activities.
M
indfulness, a practice rooted in ancient wisdom, offers a lifeline to navigate the chaos and rediscover a sense of balance. In this article, we will explore the essence of mindfulness, how to initiate its practice, the frequency of engagement, and the profound benefits it can bring to our mental, spiritual, and physical wellbeing, especially in the context of today's demanding lifestyles.
Understanding mindfulness At its core, mindfulness is the art of being fully present in the present moment. It involves observing our thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without judgement or attachment. By cultivating an attitude of curiosity and non-reactivity, we develop a heightened awareness and acceptance of our experiences as they unfold.
By engaging in tasks with undivided attention, we transform routine actions such as eating, walking, or even washing dishes into moments of blissful presence. The key lies in fully immersing ourselves in the sensory experience of the present moment, savouring each sensation, and letting go of distractions.
Frequency of practice While consistency is crucial, there is no rigid rule governing the frequency of mindfulness practice. Start by dedicating a few minutes each day to cultivate mindfulness, gradually increasing the duration as you become more comfortable. The aim is to integrate mindfulness into our lives in a sustainable and realistic manner. Ultimately, it is the quality of presence we bring to our daily experiences that matters most.
2. Spiritual exploration: Mindfulness can lead us on a profound journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth. By cultivating present-moment awareness, we develop a deeper connection with ourselves, others, and the world around us. This expanded awareness enables us to tap into our innate wisdom, compassion, and interconnectedness, fostering a sense of purpose and meaning in our lives. 3. Physical well-being: The body and mind are intimately linked. Regular mindfulness practice has been shown to reduce blood pressure, boost the immune system, and promote overall physical well-being. By focusing our attention on the present moment, we can also develop a more intuitive relationship with our bodies, making healthier choices and being attuned to our physical needs. MENTAL HEALTH
Mindfulness serves as a sanctuary In a world that often pulls us in countless directions, mindfulness serves as a sanctuary, offering refuge and respite. By embracing mindfulness, we can reclaim our innate capacity for presence, awareness, and inner peace. As we have explored, mindfulness is a transformative practice that begins with simple yet profound techniques like conscious breathing and body scan meditation. However, its true power lies in its integration into our daily lives. By infusing mindfulness into our routines and engaging in activities with undivided attention, we can unlock the limitless possibilities of each moment. The frequency of mindfulness practice is a personal choice. Start small, dedicating a few minutes each day, and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable. Remember, it is the quality of your presence that matters, not the quantity of time spent. Consistency is key, allowing mindfulness to become a natural part of your day.
Experience reduced stress, anxiety, and depression The benefits of mindfulness extend far beyond the individual level. In today's fast-paced and constantly connected world, our mental, spiritual, and physical wellbeing often suffer. Mindfulness offers a remedy to this disconnection. By cultivating present-moment awareness, we can experience reduced stress, anxiety, and depression, fostering a greater sense of mental well-being. On a spiritual level, mindfulness opens the door to selfdiscovery, connection, and meaning. It invites us to explore our inner landscape, tap into our deepest wisdom, and cultivate compassion for ourselves and others. Through mindfulness, we can embark on a profound journey of spiritual growth and transformation. Moreover, mindfulness nurtures our physical well-being. By reducing stress and promoting relaxation, it can have a positive impact on our physical health. Studies have shown that regular mindfulness practice can lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, and improve overall physical vitality. By listening to our bodies and being present with our physical sensations, we can make healthier choices and live in harmony with our bodies.
Mindfulness is a powerful tool In conclusion, mindfulness is a powerful tool that empowers us to navigate the complexities of modern life with grace and resilience. It is not about escaping reality but rather about embracing it fully. By cultivating mindfulness, we can find solace in the present moment, develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and others, and experience a profound sense of well-being that permeates all aspects of our lives. So, take a pause, breathe deeply, and embark on the transformative journey of mindfulness. Embrace the beauty of the present moment and rediscover the vast richness that exists within you and the world around you. May mindfulness become your compass, guiding you towards a life of peace, joy, and inner fulfilment amidst the whirlwind of today's lifestyles.

hat inspired you to become an adventurer?
For me, adventure isn't just about exploring new places; it's also about going into the unknown parts of the human mind. It's about getting over my fears, being open to change, and finding the amazing things inside me. The more I went into the mountains, the more I understood that the best parts of life are outside of our comfort zones.
How did you start mountaineering and what keeps you going? I started with Kilimanjaro as a bucket list item which we used to raise funds for an orphanage. For the past 10 years, it’s been about completing the 7 Summits*, the Explorer Grand Slam** and anything that would support my vision of keeping fit for the challenge.
How do you prepare mentally and physically? Mental preparation for me involves setting clear goals, knowing my “why”, and focusing on my mental toughness through stress management, meditation and prayer, and being aware. Visualisation methods help me feel more confident, as well as learning from experience while having a positive conversation with myself. Physical preparation involves building a strong cardiovascular base through endurance training, which is

done through running, riding, spinning, and hiking. Longterm workouts improve the body's ability to maintain effort at high elevations, which is an important part of getting ready for difficult trips.
What are the top three highlights of your journey? 1.
2. 3.
Becoming the first Black African woman to summit Mount Everest and finish all seven summits. This was an amazing accomplishment that showed how strong, determined, and resilient I am. Skiing to the South Pole; this was ‘Neverest’ and an amazing feat. Founding “Summits with a Purpose”, an NPC that helps poor communities build digital and physical libraries in rural and township schools. This is a great project that is working to improve education and literacy in Africa.
What has been your most challenging experience? My Everest expedition was without a doubt one of the hardest things I've ever done. The harsh landscape, weather, and high elevation made it very hard on the body and mind. But it was also the most satisfying, as well as humbling, because it made me push myself to my limits and taught me important lessons about sticking with things, even when they get hard.
You summited Mount Everest in 2019 after four previous attempts. Did you ever feel like giving up? What continued to spur you on? Unfinished business, and representation! When you reach the top of a peak, you feel a mixture of exhaustion and happiness. It's very thin air, and the world around you gets bigger with each step. Feelings range from joy to humility, and the view from the top is a breathtaking treat for all the hard work.
What was your most positive experience? The best thing about my journey has been seeing how it has changed other people, especially young women and people from underrepresented groups. Knowing that my adventures motivate and inspire others is one of the best and most satisfying things that has happened to me.
What are some of the key lessons your adventures have taught you? My adventures have been great teachers, teaching me things that go beyond the mountains. They taught me how to be strong when things go wrong; how to be patient along the way; and how important it is to have clear goals. These lessons help me deal with problems every day by keeping

Part of the proceeds is used to build libraries in Africa. The target groups are mainly women of all ages. We have been doing this since 2021 and have raised funds for three libraries in South Africa and one in Namibia.
How does your adventure journey positively impact your work as a transformational coach? Transformational coaching is about guiding individuals toward realising their full potential, making positive changes, and setting and achieving small and big goals. My adventure journey enriches my coaching because of tangible examples of personal transformation. Climbing mountains and facing adversity have taught me resilience, adaptability, and the power of ubuntu. Snakes: misunderstood or dangerous? By African Snakebite Institute
THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF STORIES SURROUNDING SNAKES, FROM CULTURAL BELIEFS, SUPERSTITION, AND POPULAR MYTHS TO OLD WIVES’ TALES AND EXAGGERATED PUB STORIES.
I
n most of these instances snakes get a bad reputation – and this is spread from person to person and generation to generation. Fear makes a huge impact when people retell a story and it’s often far scarier in their minds than the reality of an encounter. Facts often get in the way of a good story. In South Africa, with a population of 59 million people – snakes account for around 10-12 deaths a year. There is more chance of being involved in a car accident, hit by a train, or struck by lightning, than there is of being killed by a venomous snake in South Africa.

and about. Africa doesn’t get cold enough for snakes to hibernate, but they are far less active during winter. When the first summer rains arrive, snakes are very active and often encountered. The rains often flood underground burrows and holes and bring out prey items like frogs and mice. In most provinces, there are 10-15 species that are commonly seen – learning how to identify these species is a good idea. You can find free, full-colour posters of common snakes for each province on the African Snakebite Institute website: www.africansnakebiteinstitute.com/posters/

SNAKES Common misconceptions about snakes What to do if you see a snake •
•
•
•
It’s important to get some distance between yourself and the snake. If you can safely move out of striking distance, move 5 metres away from the snake from where you will be perfectly safe. The scenario changes depending on the situation. If you are on a hiking trail simply move around the snake and watch it from a safe distance; you’re in their environment after all. If the snake is seen in a campground, keep an eye on it from a safe distance so you can see where it goes. Most camping grounds have staff who are trained to remove and relocate snakes away from the campgrounds. Taking a photo is always a good idea. The ASI Snakes app lists the contact information of around 800 snake removers around the country.
How to avoid being bitten
Most snakes try and avoid humans at all costs, and unless cornered or stood on, bites are rare. Here are a few key rules to avoid being bitten: • Do not pick up snakes by hand, even those that look dead as some species feign death. • Do not attempt to catch or kill snakes. • Use a torch when walking at night. • Wear good quality leather boots when hiking. • If you are an avid outdoors person, consider investing in snake gaiters. • Step onto logs and rocks, not over them, as snakes often bask against logs and rocks. • Take extra caution in moving firewood or big logs. • Keep an eye on the trail when hiking as snakes often bask on trails.

What to do if you are bitten • • • • • • • • •
Move the bitten person away from the snake. Do not attempt to catch the snake as a second bite just complicates issues. If it is safe to do so, get a photograph of the snake as this can help with identification. Keep the victim calm. Immobilise the bitten limb. Do not cut or suck the wound and do not apply an arterial tourniquet. If the bite is from a Cape Cobra or Black Mamba, apply a smart pressure bandage. Do not apply bandages for bites from other species. Safely transport the victim to a hospital as soon as possible. If you are far away from help, a medivac would be ideal. Consider the option of calling an ambulance service and meeting them en route to the hospital as paramedics are trained to deal with snakebite emergencies.

All snakes are venomous. This is a common belief and is not the case. In Southern Africa, we have 176 different snake species, but only 20 of them are highly venomous. Another 30 of them are considered venomous, leaving 126 species that are mildly venomous or harmless. Snakes are aggressive. Most snakes try and avoid human encounters at all costs but if they are cornered, they do defend themselves. This includes making themselves look larger (by making a hood, inflating their neck, or flattening themselves) hissing, and striking out. If you find one snake, its mate is nearby. Snakes are solitary creatures, and unless it’s mating season or one snake is hunting the other, you very seldom find two snakes together. Baby snakes are more dangerous than adults. This is another misconception. Baby snakes have far less venom than adult snakes. However, they may be more nervous and likely to bite. Snakes are deaf. Snakes do not have an ear like lizards or other reptiles, so they can’t hear most airborne sounds. They do pick up vibrations on the lower jawbone and have an inner ear. A snake’s heart is in its tail. Snake anatomy is similar to most other animals. The heart is around a third of the body length behind the head.

ogs pant to keep cool and quickly overheat in hot cars when there is no free flow of air. Leaving windows slightly open will not keep your car cool enough. Heatstroke can be fatal and develops when dogs are unable to reduce their core body temperature. Symptoms include heavy panting, profuse salivation, rapid pulse, lack of co-ordination, collapse and loss of consciousness. Time is of the essence and can mean the difference between life and death. It is recommended that the dog undergo a veterinarian evaluation if he or she shows signs of heatstroke.

Make sure there is easy access to lots of clean, cool water. Keep water containers in the shade to keep the water cool. Some animals will enjoy safe areas to lie in cool water under supervision. Cooling animals off by wiping them down with a wet towel or gently hosing down with cool water with animals who are used to this. Ensure all animals have access to shade. Don’t ride/work/exercise animals in hot weather – keep activity low and remember cement and tar roads get very hot and can also burn paws. Ensure all animals have access to shelter – but remember placement is important – a kennel in the hot sun will not keep the animal cool. Good ventilation is vital – keeping an animal closed in a building (like a garage/room for example) with poor ventilation can be life threatening. Compromised or vulnerable animals may need extra support like being indoors/in a building with fans/aircon on depending on the circumstances and animal.

Sharing the roads with intoxicated drivers and pedestrians. Overheating leading to vehicle and bodily failure. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge. If your vehicle’s temperature gauge starts to go up out of control, you need to get help as your engine is at risk of overheating. If your gauge is in or near the red zone, you have to stop driving, as your engine is overheated. Warm weather could also lead to severe storms and flooding. After the winter season and during the rain, expect to find more potholes. Beautiful sunny weather invites the presence of other more vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, hikers, cyclists, and motorcyclists. You may be sharing the roads with more vehicle types such as caravans and vehicles towing trailers. Warm weather also contributes to more animal activity near our roads in their search for water.

Use navigation systems like Google Maps, which also give you traffic warnings, and show congestion, accidents, and more. Planning ahead will also help you plan accommodation for an overnight stay if you need it. Rest well before you depart and start your journey refreshed. Additionally, plan to stop and rest every two hours or every 200 kilometres, and rest for at least 15 minutes. If possible, share the driving with another licensed driver in the car to allow you some time to mentally recharge. Don’t rush. Leave enough time to get to your destination well on time. Impaired vision from the sun is a common cause of road crashes during the summer. Use the overhead sun visors to help block the sun from your eyes, and don’t forget your sunglasses as they can help you to avoid the sun’s glare. Even if your car is equipped with an air conditioner, open the windows every now and again to let fresh air in. Dress comfortably for the car wearing clothes that allow for freedom of movement, and wear comfortable shoes for driving, but avoid wearing flip-flops. Apply sunblock if necessary because your arms and legs may be exposed to the sun, even if you aren’t aware of it. Ensure that you have fluids to stay hydrated. Do not overload your car and be careful not to exceed your vehicle’s acceptable load limit. Put together an emergency repair kit for roadside emergencies, and include some medication for heatstroke, bee stings and other eventualities.

ROAD SAFETY Vehicle components and vehicle maintenance Vehicle roadworthiness is always important, irrespective of how short or slow the drive is. There are some vehicle parts that may require a bit more scrutiny: • The windscreen: If you cannot see you should not drive. Windscreens get very dirty in dry weather and marks can amplify sun glare. • Windscreen wipers: Inspect and replace worn windscreen wipers if needed to help keep your windscreen clean. Wiper blades are vulnerable to the summer heat. • Windscreen washer fluid: Ensure you have the windscreen washer fluid to help you maintain a clear view in the sun. • Sun shield: Keep your car’s interior heat lower and protect your dashboard surface from the sun’s harsh rays with a sun shield. It’s also a good idea to park in shady areas. • The cooling system and radiator: Have a qualified mechanic inspect your coolant system, including the radiator and pressure cap, to make sure they’re in good shape. • Hoses and belts: Look under the hood and inspect all belts and hoses to make sure there are no signs of bulges, blisters, cracks, or cuts in the rubber. High summer temperatures accelerate the rate at which rubber belts and hoses degrade, so it’s best to replace them if they show signs of obvious wear. Check all hose connections to make sure they’re secure. • Coolants, fluids and fluid levels: Keep your vehicle hydrated by checking for proper fuel levels and look for signs of leaks, especially of coolant. Consider bringing extra coolant, oil, and fluids along with you,
•
•
•
•
•
•
especially if you’re taking a trip to a desolate area. Make sure each reservoir is full; if you see any signs of fluid leakage, take your vehicle in to be serviced. Oil: Oil changes are important year-round maintenance, but clean oil is especially important during the summer. Oil prevents your car from overheating, lubricating moving parts safely. Air conditioning: Check your air conditioning to avoid being subjected to dangerously hot temperatures inside the vehicle. Tyres and tyre inflation: Proper tyre inflation is always important for economical driving and saving on wear and tear. According to the AA, tyres with existing damage that are under-inflated will become even more aggravated in higher temperatures, which increases the likelihood of blowouts and punctures. Tyres and preventing tyre blowouts: Keep your tyres running cool with the right amount of pressure to avoid a dangerous blowout. Use the manufacturer’s recommendation found inside your driver’s door jamb to determine the proper level for your tyre pressure. You should also visually inspect your tyres for irregular wear, low tread, and other problems. Battery: Have your mechanic check your battery, charging system, and belts, and have them make any necessary repairs or replacements. Stay alert to battery strain. Hot weather is tough on batteries. Look for signs of a failing battery, including dim lights when you start up, power drains when you turn on your air conditioning, and slow cranking on start-up. If you see these signs, take your battery to an auto parts store that offers free battery testing. Vehicle cleanliness: Clean out your vehicle. Summer heat can melt or explode items in your vehicle that were once fine. Disposable lighters, batteries, and aerosol cans can be a hazard in a hot car.

St Helena’s Marine Protected Area declared a
‘Hope Spot’ St Helena Government
IN A SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL MILESTONE, MISSION BLUE HAS OFFICIALLY RECOGNISED ST HELENA’S MARINE PROTECTED AREA (MPA) AS A ‘HOPE SPOT’. THIS GLOBAL RECOGNITION CELEBRATES THE ISLAND’S 20-YEAR JOURNEY OF MARINE RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION AND UNDERLINES ITS COMMITMENT TO PRESERVING OCEAN HEALTH, ECHOING SOUTH AFRICA’S CONSERVATION EFFORTS.
S
t Helena’s 450 000km² MPA becomes a part of the ocean network of 157 Hope Spots worldwide. South Africa is home to six Hope Spots, designated by Mission Blue in 2014, including False Bay, Cape Whale Coast, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Algoa Bay and Aliwal Shoal.
Near-pristine marine environment and rich biodiversity St Helena Island stands out for its near-pristine marine environment and rich biodiversity, including migratory species like tuna, whale sharks, and humpback whales. This British Overseas Territory lies in the South Atlantic, over 2 500 km west of the Angolan coast, with its nearest neighbour, Ascension Island, more than 1 000 km away. It is one of the most remote islands in the world. "This marine protected area and new Hope Spot of nearly half a million square miles now faces pressures largely outside its control from rapidly changing climate, pollution, invasive species and pollution,” says Dr Sylvia Earle, Founder of Mission Blue. “By becoming a Hope Spot, St Helena can act as a beacon to the rest of the world. Although geographically isolated, it
is deeply ecologically connected to many distant realms, and indeed, other Hope Spots.” Director of St Helena National Trust, Helena Bennett, said: “Our island and its surrounding waters are steeped in our culture and traditions and have played a massive role in our history’s timeline since our island’s discovery in 1502, evolving our way with a sense of nostalgia and a feeling of belonging and home”.
A subtropical paradise St Helena is one of the world’s most remote islands. It is a subtropical paradise where the mountainous terrain and microclimates create an astounding diversity of landscapes all within a few minutes’ drive. Boasting clean air, a sparkling ocean environment, and a safe community (population 4 439), St Helena is an off-thebeaten-track, bucket-list destination. Boasting more than 500 plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth, the island is also renowned for its diving and marine experiences. Additionally, St Helena is home to Jonathan the Tortoise, the world’s oldest living land animal. www.sthelenatourism.com Summer 2023/24 • rovesa.co.za | 81

Food pairing: Indian korma and other mild to medium aromatic curries, breyani, traditional South African bobotie and pickled fish.
Food pairing: Goes well with simple salads, charcuterie, plainly served salmon, trout or crayfish, fishy soups or paella with saffron.

Taphuis
finest gourmet pub in the Cape Winelands STEEPED IN HISTORY DATING BACK TO 1692, LANZERAC IS A HISTORIC LANDMARK AND STELLENBOSCH ICON. AS THE GATEKEEPER OF THE MAJESTIC JONKERSHOEK VALLEY, THE ESTATE BOASTS VIEWS OF DRAMATIC MOUNTAIN RANGES, ENDLESS ROWS OF LUSH VINEYARDS, AND HECTARES OF GARDENS SHADED BY GIANT OAK TREES.
T
hroughout the eras, rich history has been layered throughout the property and present-day Lanzerac honours the vast legacy by telling stories of the past. Taphuis restaurant is a place where guests have created many memories throughout the years. The treacle brown bar has been welcoming thirsty travellers since the 1960s. The rustic country-inspired décor is rich in texture with rough stone walls, brick floors and beautiful exposed wooden ceilings.
Dine indoors or outside Dining options are either indoors set against an impressive, handcrafted bar and large roaring fireplace with yellowwood furnishing and sash windows, or outdoors on the shady terrace complete with garden views. plates, a kind of South African-inspired tapas. These include beautiful fusions like Sout Skaapribbetjie Fritters, Pickled Fish Taco, and Bone Marrow Roast Oysters. Paired with a glamorous Lanzerac Cap Classique or one of Lanzerac’s many other award-winning wines, expertly recommended by the experienced team, it is worth visiting Taphuis for the sharing plates alone. But the menu offers way more in terms of light meals, like Wagyu and Soft Shell Crab burgers and full meal-sized salads. If you’re in line for a heartier meal, select one of the pub-style plates – perhaps the Slow Braised Lamb Shank or Oven Roast Kingklip served with parmesan potato puree, Malay spiced carrots, chardonnay apples and honey jus smoked mussel. Or how about the Sharing Braai Plankie comprising sirloin steak, boerewors, braaibroodjie, peri-peri chicken sosaties, mielies, pap, tomato smoor and chimichurri. You might not expect to find fine steak-house quality steaks in a pub, but you can’t go wrong ordering a dry-aged, South
African grain-fed steak and pairing it with a Lanzerac Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Merlot. Delicious sides abound, like butter confit potato fondant and brandy peppercorn sauce. Perhaps wait a little while before ordering dessert – and when you do, you can choose from a flourish of fantastic, sweet options, like Cinnamon & Honey Crème Brulé, or savour the last of your wine with a selection of South African cheeses. So, if you’re searching for a relaxed, yet distinctive, lunch or dinner destination to celebrate the advent of Spring, look no further than the shaded terrace or cozy rustic pub-style of the Taphuis. Booking ahead is essential for both lunch and dinner at Taphuis, which can be enjoyed from 12h00 daily. Contact restaurants@lanzerac.co.za to make your booking. You won’t regret it. 1. To a large pot, add the vegetable oil, onion, garlic, ginger, hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, vinegar and sesame oil. 2. Stir, then add the rib racks (cut them in half to fit into the pot, if necessary). Cover the pot with a lid and bring to a simmer over a low heat for at least 1 hour or until the meat is very tender and almost falling off the bone (turn the ribs halfway to coat all sides in the sauce), stirring the bottom from time to time to prevent burning. 3. Remove the ribs from the pot and bring the sauce to a rolling boil, reducing it by about a third until it reaches the consistency of a runny chutney. 4. Grill the ribs over medium-hot coals on both sides, basting with the reduced marinade, until glossy and sticky and slightly charred, then remove from the heat. 5. Serve hot, scattered with spring onions.
