inter is here! While avid travellers look forward to summer months, winter has a lot to offer, particularly in South Africa.

Overall, South Africa tends to have moderate winters. Well-known is that numerous parts of KwaZulu-Natal experience an endless summer. In other areas, which experience cooler temperatures, there are a variety of different activities to take part in – hiking, as an example, is great on cooler (not rainy) days. If you don’t feel like active adventures, try out one of the numerous eateries that have a winter menu. There is also the opportunity to indulge in some serious pampering by treating yourself to a spa day.

WIN

Due to our relatively good weather, the fun does not need to necessarily stop in winter. Our fabulous travel and tourism industry ensures that we are kept entertained throughout the year – check out the Western Cape events calendar on page 56. But, it’s not only in KZN and the Western Cape – every province has a winter line-up, so be sure to check in on the Rove SA social media pages to find out what’s hip and happening this winter! Adrenalin, adventure, leisure, culture, food and wine – we have it all on offer all-year round! Enjoy the winter and stay warm!

TRAVEL TIPS

Top 5 benefits of travelling in SA during winter 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Cooler temperatures make for great hiking opportunities. Possibility of lower accommodation rates during off-peak times and less crowds. Sparse vegetation makes it easier to spot wildlife on safari. Places on the East Coast, such as Durban, retain moderate temperatures for activities, and certain areas such as Gauteng experience summer rain so it’s dry. Perfect boma fire opportunities while glamping or camping.

Flight prices According to reports there is a good possibility of significant airfare increases as a result of rising jet fuel costs. Likewise, petrol costs for vehicles are not great, which makes travelling with friends and family in one vehicle more cost effective to split petrol costs.

Don’t feed the animals During bush getaways, be it at a resort, glamping or camping, it is essential that you do not feed animals – no matter how cute they look! There have been instances in which some baboons and monkeys have gotten used to people feeding them and then break into vehicles or accommodation to steal food.

Filling up at a petrol station International travellers will note that in SA, locals do not pump their own “gas” aka petrol. Petrol attendants fill your tank and are also responsible for checking oil and water levels as well as tyre pressure. While not compulsory, it is polite to tip your petrol attendant anything between R5 to R50.

TRAVEL TIPS

Did you know? Socks matter

Many folks spend a lot of money on walking shoes, but having the right socks is also important. The right socks can help prevent blisters. Wear the correct size socks because if they are too big, they can bunch up, causing discomfort. If they are too small, socks can cut circulation and cause pain.

Creepy crawlys The summer, warmer season is well known for mosquitos. In winter months expect rats and mice, spiders, fleas, cockroaches, flies and termites.

If walking long distances, try to avoid cotton socks as these retain sweat and leave your feet more prone to blisters.

Weather conditions For the most part, winters are moderate in many parts of the country although temperatures can drop to freezing when a cold front arrives. Snow can sometimes be seen on mountains in the Western Cape, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg areas. Western and Southern Cape get winter rain whereas the KwaZulu-Natal coast, Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces generally tend to have warm days with chilly mornings and evenings – it’s a good idea to always have a jacket nearby.

Winter wonderland While snow is generally not associated with South Africa, there are a few places where travellers can experience a winter wonderland – just be sure to check weather reports as it’s not always easy to predict when/where snow will fall. Here are a few places that sometimes experience snow:

• • • • • • • • •

Matroosberg, Western Cape Cederberg, Western Cape Sutherland, Northern Cape Rhodes, Eastern Cape Hogsback, Eastern Cape Golden Gate Highlands National Park, Free State Underberg and Sani Pass, KwaZulu Natal Mooi River, KwaZulu Natal Cathedral Peak, KwaZulu Natal

Ernie Els Wines

A journey of red decadence Charles Russell

Located in the heart of the Helderberg region, Ernie Els Wines boasts an illustrious journey with world-class award-winning red blends. The famed winemaker, Louis Strydom, shares some insights on Ernie Els Wine’s journey and what sets it apart…

D

riving into Ernie Els Wines, one is immediately struck by the architectural brilliance of the property, which seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings. The property, inclusive of the winery, is a modern masterpiece whilst retaining its traditional roots, which creates a relaxing and sophisticated ambience for visitors to enjoy. Chatting to winemaker Louis Strydom was a delightful experience as he comes across as a down-to-earth person who has a genuine passion for the outdoors, farming and crafting exceptional wine. “This is going to be my 22nd vintage at Ernie Els Wines, and I have enjoyed every minute of it,” says Strydom. “Our journey

10 | June - August 2022 • rovesa.co.za

began when Ernie Els and Jean Engelbrecht approached me in 1999, and we looked at what the natural strength of the valley in the Helderberg is – it is globally recognised for producing exceptional red wines – and we decided on red wine, red blends, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon.”

Everything is focused on the enjoyment of wine and the experience for visitors “We started small and got really good momentum. Over the years we evaluated, looked at our strong points and actually made the winery smaller as we are focused on quality as opposed to quantity. Everything we have done, from planting to the building of the facility is focused on the enjoyment of wine and the experience we offer visitors,” adds Strydom.

“Single-minded focus, a site selected for its ideal growing conditions, and gentle extraction techniques during the winemaking process all combine to create premium, full-bodied wines with the classic Cabernet Sauvignon cues that set apart every bottle of Ernie Els wine.” – Louis Strydom, Winemaker.

While he jokingly agrees that he gets paid to taste wine, he highlights that winemaking is an art and ever-evolving. “Winemaking sounds glamourous, but we are at the mercy of elements such as weather and we have one shot per year to create an excellent vintage. If you want to change something, you must wait for the following year. It takes good experience and time to figure out what works. “Each bottle of wine takes about seven years to produce – if you are starting out it takes about three years to harvest a good crop, two years in a barrel and you mature it for about a year and a half. I love being out in the vineyards and creating something from scratch.” Elegance and class Having been on various tours of wine cellars and wineries, this tour can best be described as romantic with its gentle lighting, large concrete tanks, amphora clay pots and rows of French oak barrels. and the general décor speaks to elegance and class. Of particular interest was seeing the amphora clay pots, which is not that common and thought of as a middle ground between steel and oak. Similar to oak, clay is porous, allowing for some oxygen which gives the wine a deep, rich texture. Following the tour, which also includes an Ernie Els trophy room (a highlight for any golfing aficionado), the tasting room, restaurant, and wine shop, we were treated to a wine tasting. There are a variety of tasting options to cater to guests likes. A well-versed sommelier provides insights and discreetly allows you the privacy to enjoy wines with the backdrop of majestic mountains and sprawling views of well-

maintained vineyards. It was rather difficult to choose the best wine as all blends have a smooth texture and are easy on the palate, with hints of subtle fruit flavours. Over the years, Ernie Els Wines has consistently remained a firm favourite for red wine lovers. These decadent blends are a tribute to Strydom, who explains: “The general wine consumer wants to see consistency of quality and flavour profiles. Fortunately for us, we have a moderate climate, so our vintages are relatively similar with no major variances unlike wines from other continents like Europe. “We have spent years and years on mastering Ernie Els Wines. Our Cab Sav

blends strive for singularity and perfection, which sets us apart – it is our strong point and we have focused on that. We are not interested in running the volume game as we are a boutique winery that makes exceptional blends that everyone can enjoy. When I sit around a table and see guests drinking our wines it is a great feeling. Wine is an opinion, never a fact – wine is a journey of experience, flavours, and enjoyment,” concludes Strydom.

Tswalu introduces rhino conservation experience Markus Westberg

Tswalu, South Africa’s largest private game reserve, is introducing a conservation experience focusing on generic data collection of endangered rhino populations of the Southern Kalahari ecosystem.

16 | June - August 2022 • rovesa.co.za

DISCOVER

F

rom April to September, guests are welcome to join the rhino notching initiative to analyse and support the genetic integrity of the protected rhino populations across South Africa after suffering a tragic decline over recent years. During this intimate wildlife experience, trained trackers and veterinarians set out across the Kalahari to dart young rhinos, ideally between two and three years old. After marking and associating the rhino with a recorded number, the team plants a small microchip under the skin and horns for future identity and security purposes. DNA samples are then collected and later added to a global DNA database that helps track and prevent illegally traded rhino horns. During this encounter, guests form part of the ground crew and are invited to take part of this microchipping experience that includes helping to monitor the rhinos body temperature and breathing. The private rhino notching experience covers the costs of a wildlife veterinarian, the specialised drugs in the darts, and flying expenses. Guests can further participate in Tswalu’s rhino recovery initiatives by donating directly to the reserve; primarily an ambitious conservation project that funds numerous research projects, geared towards understanding and conserving key species within the Kalahari ecosystem. All funds directly contribute to a credible and imperative rhino conservation project to re-establish populations where they can be protected.

Tswalu practices low-impact, high-value approaches to sustainable ecotourism As one of the many wildlife conservation experiences, Tswalu practices low-impact, high-value approaches to sustainable ecotourism to help fund the critical conservation work for future generations. Tswalu’s conservation goals focus on restoring the natural environment, re-establishing and protecting biodiversity, and maintaining the Kalahari’s characteristic ecological processes, all conducted through environmental research supported by the Tswalu Foundation. The Tswalu Foundation is a world leader in the field of environmental research within the southern Kalahari. However, the benefits of the targeted research extend beyond Tswalu, adding to a collective knowledge base that has already assisted conservationists in wilderness areas in other parts of Africa as well as those working in academic fields. SAFETY

Roadside assistance: What do you need to know on the roads? By Adv. Johan Jonck, Arrive Alive

R

oadside assistance has become a competitive business with many different providers offering a variety of services. Many motorists may not be aware of the assistance they can get or that they are in fact covered to enjoy some of the basic benefits.

Roadside assistance services could include: • •

• •

• • • •

Investigating and repairing the problem causing the breakdown. Checking why the battery does not start the vehicle and helping to jump-start the vehicle. Helping to change a flat tyre or damaged tyre. If there is no spare tyre the vehicle may be towed. Towing a vehicle after electrical or mechanical breakdown to the nearest approved dealer or competent repairer. Towing a vehicle involved in a crash away from the scene of the crash. Providing a small amount of fuel when a vehicle runs out of fuel. Obtaining the service of a locksmith to open the vehicle and retrieve the keys when keys are locked inside or getting replacement keys. Safe storage of the vehicle. Vehicle repatriation. Extrication and winching the vehicle. An armed security guard may be provided to stay with the motorists or vehicle until it can be safely towed away for storage and repair.

June - August 2022 • rovesa.co.za | 19

SAFETY Cellular and smartphone technology and roadside assistance In the earlier years of roadside assistance, motorists could find a network of emergency phone boxes, placed at intervals along the roadside. In recent times, mobile technology and smartphones have made it a lot easier to find emergency roadside assistance. Apart from the ability to make a call and browse the internet for emergency numbers, there are now a variety of smartphone apps offering consumers emergency services. These services are either available at a nominal monthly subscription or free.

Some important info to remember An emergency assistance or roadside app can put the motorists in touch with National Call Centres that operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The trained operators are able to assess the situation and send the necessary assistance using GPS positioning technology with accurate geolocation features. The call centre operators work closely with recovery and repair specialists to make sure that the right service provider is dispatched as quickly as possible.

What do you need to ensure fast and efficient roadside assistance? This will depend on the technology used, the location of the emergency and the nature of the emergency. When the person in distress is a member of an emergency services provider, they might have all the caller’s personal details and that of the vehicle on record and immediately available. These providers may know what kind of battery you need if yours runs flat, how to assist you with on-thespot repairs or key lockouts and even know what kind of vehicle to send if you need a tow. A vehicle manufacturer offering the service might request that you provide your vehicle model and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or chassis number. This can be found on the passenger side of your vehicle’s dashboard and can be seen from outside the vehicle through the window.

20 | June - August 2022 • rovesa.co.za

If the service is used through an emergency assistance app, your location details will be immediately available to the provider through the tracking and location functionality on the application. If you are travelling on any of the national roads, you can ensure fast response by using the route marker boards next to the roads. The emergency response vehicles of those managing the tolled roads usually have vehicle tracking installed and are well monitored while patrolling the freeway. The call centre operators are then able to dispatch the emergency vehicles closest to your location. When talking to a call centre operator the call taker will request the following information: • Your telephone number (to remain in contact with you should you be cut off). • Your location from the route marker board or other info (street name and nearest crossroad). • The details of what has happened, how many people are injured, whether there is a fire, etc.

Safety at the scene when calling for roadside assistance Always consider your own safety, that of your passengers, other road users and that of your vehicle in the event of a breakdown. A few important safety tips to remember: • Awareness is the key to safety at road crash scenes or where vehicles have broken down. • Knowing the hazards and how to work around them will ensure the safety of everyone. • Put out your warning triangle at least 45m behind the vehicle. • Turn on your hazard lights and headlights, in fact, switch on all lighting that may help other road users see that there has been an accident or vehicle breakdown and that slowing down is necessary. • Whether it is safe to move away from the vehicle will depend on the scene, the time, and the safety near the location.

[A word of appreciation to JD De Ridder from ProjectHelp for insights on Roadside Assistance]

SUZUKI TRAVELS

An authentic adventure with

Suzuki Jimny A four-day Suzuki 4x4 expedition with thrills, no frills and an experience of a lifetime!

32 | June -August 2022 • rovesa.co.za

SUZUKI TRAVELS

Day 1 The levels of excitement at the opportunity to adventure from Durban to Lesotho is at an all-time high as the Rove SA team were handed keys to a Suzuki Jimny. Eager to kickstart our ‘coddiwomple’, we opted to take a rather scenic route (okay, we took the longest route accidentally, which took us via Umhlanga and Durban central) to meet up with the convoy in Himeville, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). As the urban areas in KZN started to recede, the adventure was fully underway through the lush greenery of KZN, which is a marvel. Three hours later, we arrived at Himeville Arms Hotel for a hearty lunch and a quick debrief. Stopping at the border control at Sani Pass in KZN, the jitters – part adrenaline, part uncertainty of the unknown – started to set in a bit as light showers descended upon the group. Upon entering the Sani Pass for the ascent to the Lesotho border, we put the Jimny into low range. The first few kilometres were relatively simple to navigate and

helped along greatly by the Suzuki Jimny’s low range drive, which feels sturdy and controlled. The views from Sani Pass are beautiful, rugged and at some parts, downright scary when you look out your window and see incredible drops. It was during these parts my navigator felt immense relief at not being the driver but cheered me on all the while frantically clutching the dashboard. The African Expeditions team – a familyowned safari company that specialises in boutique adventures – who led the convoy and brought up the rear, were amazing as they kept the rest of the group (seven Jimnys in total) updated via radio on particularly hairy turns and oncoming traffic (expect vehicles, taxis and people on foot). Along Sani Pass there are various lookout points to take it all in. As time went by, the ascent became steeper and the “road” was littered by rocks, which the Suzuki Jimny navigated (and went over) with ease. While

the Jimny had no issue, my nerves were rattled, and I had forgot my mantra of girl power (we were the only all female team on this expedition). I did ask my navigator if she would like a chance at driving parts of the Sani Pass, but she firmly said "No" and gave me a look to imply that I must be crazy to even ask. At some stage she calmly noted, "There is barely a road here... just rocks." I responded with a "You don't say..." Approximately three hours later the convoy made it to the Lesotho border post, relieved and with a feeling of euphoria at “conquering” the Sani Pass. Girl power vibes were back – an all female team did it! (Granted many all female teams have most likely did this before, but it was a very special moment for us.) To celebrate this, we stopped at Sani Mountain Lodge, which boasts Africa’s highest pub, taking in the panoramic views. It is an awesome feeling to look down on the road you have just travelled, while standing level and above the clouds. Alas, before darkness could descend, we headed out to Mokhotlong (meaning ‘place of the Bald Ibis’ in Sesotho) to find our accommodation for the night at Senqu Hotel. While not five-star accommodation, the hotel was a welcome haven that served up clean, comfortable lodgings and a hot meal with drinks to mark the end of a successful Day 1!

SUZUKI TRAVELS

Day 2 After a relaxing breakfast we were ready to hit the road. Mokhotlong is a bustling city with various stalls scattered along the pavements, selling everything from airtime and clothes, to food, storage containers and more. It also boasts the familiar Shoprite, Pep Stores and other chain stores South Africans would recognise. After doing a quick shop and a refuel, the convoy was on the move again. Perhaps it was the adrenaline of Day 1 that caused this writer not to notice at first, but seven Jimnys passing through Lesotho draws a lot of attention from warm and friendly locals pausing to stare and wave. The true beauty of Lesotho shines once you leave the city areas. Here we were treated to majestic views of the Highlands as far as the eye can see. Driving through various mountain passes, we encountered numerous hamlets/rural villages that appear to be in harmony with the natural surrounds. Heading down, it’s quite a marvel to see large trucks carrying goods take on the ascent slowly but with relative ease.

34 | June - August 2022 • rovesa.co.za

The Roof of Africa Road – reportedly the highest tar road in Africa – was a leisurely drive. At the top of the road we managed to pull over at a lookout point, which was a novel experience with an impromptu braai for lunch (in true South African style). The more enthusiastic (aka fit) folk in the group headed out to do a mini climb, but with storm clouds threatening returned quickly after summiting rather winded due to the high altitude (this writer smugly looked on wondering about this sojourn – we had an off-road vehicle and there are panoramic views everywhere you stand, so was the exertion really needed? I'd rather drive than hike!).

Making good time, we reached the Oxbow Hotel by afternoon, which afforded us a great opportunity to frolic in the river and for hikers to climb the path to the waterfall. Whilst lounging on the river rocks, it was an opportune time to take in the natural surrounds, which also included seeing sure-footed mountain goats grazing. The Oxbow Hotel has a charm and very friendly staff who served up a flavourful and scrumptious dinner. As a South African, it was not too difficult to adapt to Lesotho’s “load shedding” – lights out at 10pm!

SUZUKI TRAVELS

Day 3 Day 3 was a long, uphill drive on tar. We passed various sites that are important to the locals, including the Butha-Buthe Mountain where King Moshoeshoe, the first King of Lesotho, and his followers settled. En route to Semonkong, meaning ‘the place of smoke’, we traversed some more mountain passes – it is the Lesotho Highlands after all – and passed through some bustling cities, including Roma. Locals seemed to fly by in their vehicles, but as the roads are filled with turns, and at some points rocks, it is advisable to practice caution. Reaching the viewpoint in Semonkong, we got to see the waterfalls from a distance. Following this we headed to Semonkong Lodge, which has a rustic and natural feel to it. After some drinks and dinner, it was time to hit the snooze button as we had an early start for Day 4.

Observations • •

• •

The local Maluti beer is similar to a light SA beer. You can experience four seasons within an hour when driving – hail, rain, sunshine, cold – so pack accordingly and always keep a jacket in the car. Driving conditions on Sani Pass and other mountainous roads in Lesotho depends on weather conditions – it becomes more dangerous in snow, on black ice and in heavy rain. On long drives – outside city/town areas – ablution facilities are few and far between. It’s advisable to drive slowly as there are a lot of hairpin bends, animals, and rocks at parts.

SUZUKI TRAVELS

Day 4 We were up at 5:30am with the tour guides leading us off at 6am to head to Maletsunyane Falls – the highest single drop waterfall in Africa and the second highest drop in the world. My navigator took the driver’s seat, and we had another opportunity to offroad. The Suzuki Jimny was put into low range and was helped with the vehicle’s descent assist, which helps control speed without the need to brake constantly. The descent for the most part was fine, but eventually we veered off the gravel road for a true offroad experience. My driver, at certain points, started to do a ‘hand flap’, which was rather impressive as it involved driving with one hand while she repeatedly chanted, “Oh my word” as she tried to avoid heading into ditches and avoiding large hidden rocks. The drive was worth it – we reached a lookout point where we had a spectacular view of the falls and were above the swallows (birds). Some of the group opted to horse ride to the spot and met up with us later. As we celebrated the view, we were filled with awe, surrounded by such natural beauty.

The drive back up was uneventful for the most part, besides one of the teams driving into a ditch. The rest of the group stopped near the top and it was an exciting moment as we patiently watched the Jimny get out of a tight spot – at this stage many of the group were feeling relieved that they hadn’t driven into a ditch. Twenty minutes later we all regrouped and headed out for a leisurely breakfast, after which we set off for Maseru where we would fly out to our respective homes. The drive to Maseru, while beautiful brought with it a feeling of nostalgia – it was a bit sad to return to reality. It’s difficult to describe this trip, but the one thing that comes to mind is ‘authentic’. Lesotho is majestic – it feels truly African with bustling cities that are unpretentious, mixed with wild and untamed mountains, colourful villages,

spectacular waterfalls and warm hospitality. Driving through the Highlands is a magical experience, and you can almost envision the past – even today, donkeys and sheep herdsmen roam the roads, and children confidently ride past on horses. At the start of this trip – prior to driving Sani Pass – I wanted a bit more speed from the Jimny, but as the adventure continued, I realised that the Suzuki Jimny retains its authenticity. It has had aesthetic facelifts, some models are now turbo versions, and there are additional gadgets such as charging points, but at its core, the Jimny shines as an off-roader. Editor’s Experience Drive time: 1h 9min l 81.4km, via N1 and R45, from Cape Town CBD We have all heard of the beauty and the wine of Franschhoek, but for an experience of note, try out paragliding over the Franschhoek Valley! Driving up to the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve via the Franschhoek Pass, which is stunning, the nerves are starting to set in. Never having paraglided before, I start to feel my age and worry about things such as breaking bones, whereas in my 20s I would not have given it a second thought. The Winelands Paragliding team are brilliant at setting you at ease as they talk through aspects of wind (this is critical as it keeps you up in the air), safety precautions and just general banter. A colleague questions, “where is the motor?,” to which I confidently answer, “nope, there is just some material, some strings, and a pilot”. I am sure there is more to it, but my answer also implies that now is not the time to talk as I try to ascertain how high the cliff is. It's time to go and I am strapped in asking out loud what do I hold onto. I learn that you don’t need to hold, just run off a cliff. Before we even reach the edge of the cliff, we have lift off! Wow that was relatively easy and I comfortably scoot into the seat for a more comfortable sitting position, and start to look around loving the experience. The ride itself is slow and we had some good paragliding winds where we were able to climb relatively high. The views render me almost speechless, the calm at gliding through the air is something else – it’s quiet except for the pilot and I chatting. It’s difficult to describe gliding in the air but the one thing that comes to mind is "wow". I see Franschhoek from a completely different perspective. I was then alerted to the fact we were turning around to head back to the take-off spot for landing. Just before landing I have a thrilling experience of the “rollercoaster,” which is basically aerobatics, which got my adrenaline going again. I see the ground approaching fast and am envisioning a crash landing, but the pilot simply tells me to lift my legs up and then a few moments later put my legs down – I landed on my feet! There was no jelly in my legs, just a feeling of wanting to do it again. The Winelands Paragliding team were exceptional in ensuring that we had an awesome and safe adventure. It was super exciting, super chilled and a super experience!

ROADTRIP: WESGRO

Destination: Oudtshoorn, Klein Karoo Drive time: 4h 25min l 391km, via Route 62, from Franschhoek Known as the ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn offers much more than expected. Route 62 stretches across the Western and Eastern Cape along a beautiful and scenic stretch that passes through towns such as Calitzdorp, Ladismith, Barrydale, Montagu and Ashton.

Experiences

Safari Ostrich Farm This is a world-class experience where guests get the opportunity to hop onto a tractor and get up close and personal with Zimbabwean, Kenyan, Australian, and South African ostriches. Throughout the tour, the guide explains the nature and characteristics of these creatures while the ostriches flock towards you – we had feeding buckets, so we were definitely popular. Like a true city slicker, a member of the tour group attempted to run to the front of the tractor to avoid the ostriches, but we were surrounded. While many will say this is a great adventure for families, particularly kids, adults will enjoy this as these “birds” are quite majestic and it’s fascinating to see them out and about. Following the tractor ride, you then start a brief walking tour. There is also a shop on the premises that sells souvenirs and ostrich leather goods. Top tip: The ostrich beak is quite powerful, so be sure to hold onto the bucket tight when feeding.

Cango Caves The Cango Caves are definitely a marvel and considered South Africa’s oldest tourist attraction. Its unique limestone formations have been naturally sculpted through the ages and it is a special experience to walk these halls that our ancestors once called home. The Heritage Tour, which is approximately an hour long, is a relaxing walk through six halls where a tour guide provides you with info on the history of these chambers. While the caves remain largely undisturbed, the tour guide does switch on lighting allowing visitors the opportunity to study the formations a bit closer. It’s difficult to ascertain just how big the Cango Caves are as parts are closed to members of the public. Top tip: To ensure that the caves retain their authenticity and don’t get lost, stick to the path and do not touch any of the formations.

ROADTRIP: WESGRO

Destination: Mossel Bay Drive time: 1hr 20min l 108.8km, via N2, from Knysna As a harbour town, Mossel Bay is sometimes forgotten in comparison to flashy seaside towns like Knysna and Plett. However, Mossel Bay is a hidden gem and offers guests a variety of adventure thrills while remaining authentic and chilled.

Experiences

Point of Human Origins This renowned archaeological site provides evidence of modern human behaviour in the area. It is a special experience to stand in the exact spot that our ancestors traversed thousands of years ago – and to know they were more advanced than we originally thought. For archaeology and history buffs this is a treat, particularly with the wellversed guide who provides valuable insights as to how early modern humans lived. To reach the site on display, a fair amount of walking is required – about 200 steps down and 200 steps up. Top tip: The scenery near the cave is spectacular with waves crashing against the rocks – it is not a bad idea to stop every now and again to take it all in while getting a bit of a break from the steps.

Mossel Bay Zipline The longest over-the-ocean zipline! What a rush, what an awesome experience. On arrival visitors are suited up with safety gear and are transported via minibus to the site. Once there, you are attached to the zipline, and safety checks are done before you calmly walk off a platform. Before you know it, you are cruising through the air with the waves crashing below. At approximately 1 150m in length, the ride itself is exhilarating and while it can be fast in terms of speed (up to 80km/hr), there is ample opportunity to look out to sea and witness the ocean below. Top tip: It seems scary, but it is really fun and remember to slow down for your photo as you near the end of the ride.

Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex Don’t be fooled by the entrance of the museum – it is actually massive and boasts a very impressive collection of maritime artifacts. The museum, in addition to showcasing maritime history, also has an aquarium and is home to the Post Office Tree (considered to be the oldest post office in SA), Malay graves and a botanical garden. Top tip: The life-size replica of the Dias Caravel – a boat used by Portuguese explorers is a sight to behold and not to be missed. June - August 2022 • rovesa.co.za | 53

ROADRIP: WESGRO Gin making: Cape Saint Blaize A welcome drink of gin and tonic sets the tone for a great experience. A bit of science, lots of flavourings to choose from and voila, you have distilled your own bespoke gin! Seated at the table, it’s exciting to play around with flavours, distil and conduct tests with regards to getting the right alcohol content. Once you have made your own crafted gin, you get to name and label your creation to enjoy at a later stage. Top tip: It can get a bit competitive with friends who are attending class with you – best advice is to not be influenced no matter how radical your mix might be.

Jakkalsvlei A bit out of the way from Mossel Bay, Jakkalsvlei Vineyard is worth the trip with excellent wines that veer towards a slightly sweeter taste, coupled with superb meal pairings. Whether you are seated indoors or outdoors the ambiance is modern yet relaxing.

ADVENTURE

Running long distance

How to prep and push through Alexis Berg

M

odern trail runners are spoiled for choice when it comes to cutting-edge nutritional supplements, exercise regimes and gear, but speak to any trail runner after a major event, and you’ll hear the same tales of runners failing to finish due to altitude sickness, ripped up feet from ill-fitting shoes, or upset stomachs from eating too much of the wrong items at the wrong times.

When it comes to destination trail runs – aimed at all skill levels – it’s easy to see why the Drakensberg region attracts runners from across South Africa and the world. Whether your breath is taken away by the majestic mountain ranges, the biting cold, the high altitudes or your over-optimistic pace, there are some practical tips to bear in mind before heading off into the great outdoors.

58 | June -August 2022 • rovesa.co.za

To ensure your safety and enjoyment, the very first lesson for new runners is that your race journey doesn’t start when the race starts, but in the years and months leading up to that moment. According to coach Rebecca Johansson (Ph.D in Exercise Science from the University of Cape Town), new runners should be patient and enjoy the journey. “A good mix of running and hiking, and knowing when to switch between the two will make it more enjoyable and will help keep your breathing and effort sustainable,” she recommends. “As you gain fitness, strength and experience you will feel more confident and comfortable running longer distances.”

ADVENTURE Your support network Next, don’t try to do it all alone. This applies as much to your preparation for any run – where it will initially be critical for your safety that you follow a more knowledgeable runner who can offer you guidance on-thefly – as it does to during the race event itself. “Having a pacer or supporter can be very helpful in order to make observations on whether you are disorientated or hallucinating, and can help decide if you need to rest, need certain nutrients etc,” explains Coach Johansson. “For a 160km race, with nine checkpoints along the way, it’s possible to do the race without a pacer. You will need to ensure to restock your nutrients at each checkpoint to have enough until the next point.” One of the most challenging trail running events is the annual Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg (UTD), in April, with races ranging from 21km to 160km. What it’s really known for, however, is its unparalleled vistas as runners cross the border between South Africa and Lesotho, with the trail incorporating and skirting some of the legendary features of the Drakensberg, including Sani Pass and the Twelve Apostles.

A steady pace Pieter ‘Everyone calls me Pete’ Calitz finished sixth overall in this year’s UTD 100km race. A professional tennis coach, Pete got into trail running seven years ago and participated in several races in his home city of Cape Town and surrounds, before he tackled the UTD for a new challenge. According to him, the most common mistake he sees on runs is incorrect pacing: “Most people run too fast early on in the race, not taking into account that they’re literally going to be running the entire day. If you can run in the last 20 or 30 kilometres, it’s going to be much better for you than having to run fast in the first 30 or 40 kilometres and then literally walking or death-marching towards the end.”

Getting miles on your legs Jo Keppler also ran the UTD in 2022, making the trip from her home on a farm outside Pietermaritzburg with the aim of improving her time in the UTD 160km. Avoiding last year’s ankle injury, this year she accomplished her goal of a sub-28 hour time, shaving more than two hours off her 9th place finish in 2021, to finish fourth overall this year. Your preparation for a new event should preferably take

into account both the local terrain and a distance which is related to whatever you’ll be running on race day. Keppler left nothing to chance: she and a friend ran 226km along the Drakensberg Grand Traverse over 89 hours without any support a month before the race. “We were up in altitude most of the time, it was very wet on the escarpment and conditions were really difficult. So I think that really toughened me up,” she says. According to Calitz, variety is key: “To run 100km you have to mix up long runs with a lot of climbing and you have to do some speed. I just do a mix of some track work once a week and do lots of climbing up the mountain – even if it’s just for beers or coffees – and then every couple of weeks I do some long runs. I did a road marathon before the UTD race which was a way to run 42km.”

High altitude, low stress Preparing yourself for the possibility of altitude sickness is also important in the Drakensberg. “Always have back up plans. If you are not acclimated to the area, the sympathetic nervous system is in overdrive which could make you more susceptible to GI distress,” explains Johansson. “If this happens, you need ‘back up’ food and drinks you can try. Some athletes will rely more on liquid nutrition as a backup, or slow down to get food down.” “A lot of people get quite nauseous. From my experiences you really need to slow it down and drop your heart rate and keep eating, because then people stop eating and drinking and that makes it ten times worse. So I try to eat something every hour on the hour, even if I don’t feel like it,” adds Keppler.

Healthy food Marthinus Stander, the General Manager for the Premier Resort Sani Pass Hotel (a favourite venue for runners tackling the various Drakensberg races due to the location and runner camaraderie there), started road running eight years ago before getting hooked on trail running after moving from Durban to Sani. He explains that running in extremely cold and rainy conditions can suppress a runner’s appetite. “You’re so cold that all the blood has flowed to your skin to try to keep you warm in that environment. There’s no blood going to your stomach to process the food that you’re putting into it,” Marthinus says. “So the liquid diet that you’re on for that period works. There’s a bit of comfort in eating a handful of nuts or chewy sweets or a little race

ADVENTURE bar, but to actually have a sandwich is going to be hard to get down.” According to Keppler, nutrition has been a case of trial and error for her, but she feels she’s finding a good balance now. “I use Hammer gels and Hammer bars, which are all-natural. And then I use Maurten drink mix and Tailwind, so that’s like specialised nutrition which you don’t get at the refreshment tables,” she says. “I’ll carry those and my cashews and dates, and at the tables I’ll have some fruits, bananas and potatoes.”

Local insights Although trail runners can rarely spend months at their race’s venue beforehand, a site recce to familiarise yourself with the environment and soaking up local knowledge is a good idea. Stander recommends that runners prepare for new races by studying the actual routes they’ll be running while under less challenging conditions: “A month before the time I did the whole UTD route, broken up into 15km pieces. I think that played a massive role, especially the pieces I was going to do at night.” “A lot of people will come back to do a recce for the UTD next year, and they’ll sit with me and say, ‘Right, how do we get from here to there? How tough is this?” he shares. “I have the knowledge to give to these people and say ‘This is how it works. Let me run with you for 10km or put you in touch with a farmer in that part of town who will allow you to run through his farm to a checkpoint.” Apart from the UTD, two other trail runs in the Drakensberg which are worth investigating are The Giant’s Cup in May and the Sani Stagger in November. If all you want to do is just hike these routes and appreciate the beauty at your own pace, that’s also an option with The Giant’s Cup’s ‘Hiking Giants’ event.

NORTHERN CAPE Blooming fantastic: Hantam National Botanical Garden Winter rains bring about a kaleidoscope of colours in the renowned bulb capital of the world, Nieuwoudtville, with more than 1 350 plant species – the gardens are a must-see during Spring time. From a geological perspective, the Dwyka rocks were formed when a glacier covered the Karoo about 300 million years ago. There are also sights of dolerite koppies and dolerite beds which were formed during an episode in the Jurassic period (135 to 180 million years ago) when lava erupted across the southern African landscape. Other interesting finds include seeing long-tied flies on the Babiana and Lapeirousia plants. The gardens are not just a pretty site – they also offer a variety of walking trails, picnic sites and guided tours – an experience of colour, relaxation and being in nature.

An other-worldly experience: Quiver Tree Forest Considered the largest quiver tree forest of its kind in the world, seeing these amazing yet alienlooking trees is a sight to behold. These foreign-looking trees, which are actually part of the aloe family, provides food and shelter for many insects, mammals and birds. Additionally, these trees are protected by law in South Africa, preventing the removing of plants from the wild without a permit. An interesting fact is that it gets its name from the indigenous San people who used it to hollow out the tubular branches to form quivers for their arrows.

ADVERTORIAL: NEETHLINGSHOF ESTATE

Wines accessible to vegans and vegetarians All Neethlingshof wines are grown, made, bottled, and matured on the estate under the craftsmanship of talented De Wet Viljoen, winemaker at Neethlingshof since 2008. During the entire farming and winemaking process no animal products are used (traditionally used in winemaking). Instead of using animal products derived from milk, eggs, and fish to fine and clarify the wine before bottling, Neethlingshof makes use of plant derived protein instead, making our wine accessible to all vegans and vegetarians. The estate has a long and rich tradition of wine making in Stellenbosch, with many intricate stories to tell. The range of wines includes the Short Story Collection range and the recently introduced 1802 Collection, all paying tribute to the stories that have helped shape Neethlingshof and continue to do so, highlighting the estate’s respect for its past, it’s present and its future.

Accolades for Neethlingshof wines Neethlingshof is a ‘must visit’ destination for all wine lovers who appreciate the essence of origin of Stellenbosch, award-winning wines, and a delightful story. Neethlingshof wines have been awarded significant accolades – The Owl Post Pinotage 2014 was awarded the coveted Abraham Perold Trophy for Pinotage in 2016 at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC), as well as Gold Outstanding, which denotes a score of 93 and is above what judges’ rate as “quality of the highest order”. These wines also tell the stories of heritage and initiatives. Visit and learn more about the wines that tell the tale of the jackals that got mistaken for wolves, the significance of the six flowers on the gable of the manor house, and how the farms eco-sensitive approach to farming practices brought back the spotted eagle owl and the elusive caracal to Neethlingshof. Luxury in Limpopo:

Mhondoro Safari Lodge and Villa Mhondoro Safari Lodge and Villa located within the Welgevonden Game Reserve – approximately three hours from OR Tambo international airport in Johannesburg – offers guests a truly luxurious safari getaway with 5-star hospitality.

A

rriving at the entry of Welgevonden Game Reserve, it’s about an hour’s drive to Mhondoro Safari Lodge and Villa. The city life recedes and the Waterberg landscape lush with bushveld, rolling hills, multi-coloured sandstone cliffs, plains, rivers and wildlife transports guests to nature's haven. Hot towels to freshen up were presented by our private butler to freshen up following our drive, and we were given a tour of accommodation, which includes luxury suites (equipped with a private plunge pool) and villas, each tastefully decorated with an eclectic fusion of African chic meets Europe. Our private chef served up a freshly made late lunch to sustain us for the approaching afternoon game viewing drive. Interestingly, Mhondoro Safari Lodge and Villa have established a farm near the entrance of Welgevonden Game Reserve that provides organic fruit, herbs and vegetables for meals with plans underway to bring in livestock such as cattle and sheep.

A wildlife haven During the trip, we did a total of four game drives – each providing a special experience, be it sunset sundowners with snacks or freshly made pancakes in the bush. Our game ranger was a veritable fountain of information and had a keen eye keeping a lookout for wildlife. Visitors will be amazed at the game reserve, which is teeming with wildlife – there are no dull moments or driving around for hours in search of spotting animals in the wild. The Big

Five (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo), zebra, giraffe, various type of buck, monkeys, baboons, reptiles and other mammals all call the reserve home – and, it’s easy to see why as the reserve itself retains a wilderness that seems almost untouched making it a safe haven for wildlife. During game drives, our ranger ensured that we caused as little disturbance as possible even when there were a few close

calls, including some rhinos, buffalos, zebras and elephants blocking the pathway. During our drives we encountered four out of the big five – the leopard as per usual proved to be rather elusive. Of all the adventures on offer, the game walk was the most exhilarating. Setting off at 6am in the morning, our game ranger took us on a mini hike through the reserve. There was no vehicle to run to, and it was

exciting – yet requires a level of nerves of steel – to be only a few metres away on foot near animals. On our walk we encountered baboons, rhinos and zebras.

Exceptional service, exceptional experiences In addition to wildlife game drives and walks, the staff component at Mhondoro ensures that every activity undertaken is an exceptional experience for guests.

ADVERTORIAL: ORG DE RAC

Keeping wine natural

with organic farming The award-winning Swartland wine farm Org de Rac, follows the principals of organic farming for one reason only: naturally farmed and healthy grapes make better wine.

J

ohan Gerber, Org de Rac’s General Manager, says that organic farming is often incorrectly referred to as a modern fad or a gimmick. According to Gerber, exactly the opposite is true. “Organic agriculture is far older than modern winemaking,” he says. “At the beginning of the previous century, all agriculture – including the farming of vineyards – was organic. Farmers had to use natural fertilizer and do pestcontrol without chemical pesticides. It was only after the Second World War that agriculture became industrialised with the use of factory-made chemicals, which changed the face of farming.”

All that organic agriculture is, is using farming practices as was done in the days before artificial additives were used. “At Org de Rac we have always only used natural fertilizer, such as manure and compost, as well as nonartificial methods of controlling harmful insects and weeds. By following this method of organic farming, the soils are not sterilized by chemicals and the vines grow and develop grapes in a natural environment. And this leads to healthier grapes at harvest time, making wines that are purer in flavour and more expressive of the relevant variety than those coming from chemically farmed vineyards,” says Gerber. Johan says this can especially be seen in Org de Rac’s Rhône grape varieties such as Shiraz, Mourvédre and Grenache on the red side and Roussanne and Verdelho on the white. The well-known Chenin Blanc grape, one of South Africa’s best-loved varieties, also takes on a uniquely delicious flavour profile in these conditions. “Whether in single bottle varieties or taken-up in our Die Waghuis Red or White blends, the combination of Swartland sun and organically farmed, pure soils show a unique flavour profile and delicious expression of these varieties,” he explains. “Whenever someone asks me whether organic wines taste better and different, I offer a glass of Org de Rac Shiraz or Roussanne to prove my point. Or let them taste our Die Waghuis Rhône-style red and white blends which have garnered terrific scores from the international critic Tim Atkin, MW as well as roping in the gold medals at various local and international wine shows.” Johan says that organic wine farming is growing at a rapid pace around the world. “The top wine regions in France, such as Bordeaux and Burgundy, have moved to organic as the best way to grow healthy grapes best able to express terroir,” he says. “And with the wine industry globally under pressure to follow a sustainable path, more-and-more farmers around the world are changing over to organic. This places Org de Rac in a great position as we have been organic since beginning operations 22 years ago and are now one of the oldest organic farmers in South Africa from where we are proud to lead the way and spread the message that organic wine is the wine for the future that is actually coming back from the past.”

Inverdoorn surviving rhino

birth baby now orphaned The Aquila 24-hour Rapid Rhino Response team, under the guidance of the Saving Private Rhino organisation, has confirmed that the rhino calf that was birthed from the surviving rhino after a poaching incident, is now orphaned and being cared for at a Western Cape rhino orphanage.

T

he calf was born following the horrific December 2021 rhino poaching incident at the Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve.

“The mother abandoned the calf during the evening of the day of the birth, which meant that the baby was left alone for hours. Unfortunately, the mother was also not producing sufficient milk and therefore the new born calf did not get enough essential nutrition to build its immune system,” said a team member.

Searl Derman, owner of Aquila Collection, has been on site to observe the progress of the baby and ensure that the calf’s health is first priority.

The monitoring team under the guidance of the Anti-Poaching Unit and Saving Private Rhino kept a watchful eye and found the baby to have been born premature and underweight. The calf was in desperate need of nourishment, and they then made the crucial decision to rescue the baby to save its life.

“Our teams are doing excellent work! Over the years we have been involved in the care of a number of orphans and our facilities are geared to provide a safe and healthy environment for orphaned rhinos to get the best possible second chance.” In the best interest of the rhino’s rehabilitation and security, the care facilities are not open to the public. The facilities are funded by the multi award-winning Saving Private Rhino NGO and Aquila Collection with the hope of further support from corporate and private donations.

24-hour specialist care has been provided to the baby since it was moved to a rhino orphanage managed by the Aquila Collection, while no expense has been spared in medical treatment and veterinarian costs to help save the baby’s life.

Caring for a baby rhino is extremely costly and high risk as they are prone to infections. A baby rhino needs to be fed milk every three hours and there are a lot of additional staff and intensive chores to handle the feeding, hygiene and cleaning facilities.

The experts currently monitoring the baby said he is stable but needs lots of love and support.

If you would like to donate to this cause, visit www.www.payfast.co.za/donate/go/aquila/

During the first few hours of any wildlife birth, it is vital that the newborn gets enough of the mother’s milk.

‘Tea tourism’

– the hot new engine of growth for SA’s economy Few industries have been hit as hard by the pandemic as the travel and tourism sector, but fortuitously, it has given a boost to tea tourism worldwide.

A

dele du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council (SARC) says the pandemic turned everyone’s focus to healthier living, which has fuelled a resurgence in tea consumption and exploring the unique regions where tea or tisanes are produced. “Globally, this trend has led to once dilapidated tea planter’s bungalows and houses being restored and turned into boutique hotels and lodges. Here, tea-lovers can enjoy a tranquil stay, away from the city surrounded by nature, while learning more about their favourite brew. “Most of these tea estates are 100+ years old, so staying there and learning about its history, tea culture and heritage is a unique experience in and of itself. When you go on a tea tour, a whole new world starts to unfold. It takes you inside a century-old community that has been farming and processing tea for generations.

“From an economic perspective, tea tourism has a great outlook. The market has enormous potential, and it’s sustainable and green. “Travellers are starting to swop ‘sun-and-sand’ vacations with new, niche travel experiences that interest them, and beverage tourism, which encompasses tea, coffee, wine, whiskey, and beer tourism, all fall under the same umbrella,” remarks du Toit. Annually, tourism contributes about R130 billion (3%) to SA’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provides work for 4.5% of the population. Tourist numbers plummeted by 72.6% from 10.2 million in 2019 to 2.8 million in 2020. Du Toit believes the combination of Rooibos farming with tourism can become a new engine of growth for the local economy, which in turn, could help create jobs and alleviate poverty. “The registration of Rooibos as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) in the EU last year, has created more awareness among the large teadrinking nations in Europe of the origins of Rooibos and that it is unique to and only grows in the Cederberg region of the Western Cape. Word of its health benefits has also increased the demand for the herbal tisane.”

Here’s a list of activities that you can expect along the Rooibos Route: •

The Rooibos Route Sanet Stander, co-founder of the Rooibos Route (established several years ago to promote tourism in Clanwilliam – the heartland of Rooibos) says they’ve seen an uptick in international travel to the area and are booking more Rooibos tours. “We’ve hosted tourists from all over the world, but there’s been an influx of German and Swiss tourists of late, and as locals have searched for secluded spots during the pandemic, Clanwilliam has become a favourite among South Africans too. “Gone are the days when guests would be happy with just sightseeing and a comfortable stay. The new crop of tourists love being part of adventurous, unexplored activities, and tea tourism ticks all these boxes.” Stander says the concept of a Rooibos Route took hold after being inundated by questions from tourists about Rooibos at the local Rooibos Teahouse, a boutique restaurant where tourists can sample more than 100 varieties of Rooibos.

From there you can also enter Drakenstein via the quaint Simondium and past the Klein Drakenstein prison, which is proudly guarded by Madiba’s statue. Upon reaching the junction between the Huguenot tunnel and Drakenstein, the traveller has two choices – proceed to Witzenberg via Wellington or drive through the tunnel and the Dutoitskloof Pass on your way to the Breede Valley. In Witzenberg you will find the towns of Tulbagh, Wolseley, Ceres, and the snowy plateau of Op-die-Berg. Breede Valley is home to Touws River on the one end and Rawsonville on the other, with the Hex River Valley and the bustling town of Worcester in between. A few routes will give

you access to the area of Langeberg that is home to the towns of Robertson, McGregor, Ashton, Montagu and Bonnievale. The Winelands district is world renowned for its award-winning wines and other agricultural successes. Yet it is truly the whole package that assures visitors are physically and spiritually rejuvenated – such as steam trains, 4X4 routes, horse riding, walking, biking, hiking and exploring historic foot paths and ‘connecting’ with the early inhabitants and settlers of this district. Celebrate the Cape Winelands by planning your special occasion here. The area boasts an unrivalled array of options for any event. If you’d love to learn how to fly, to fly-fish or to grill that fish to perfection, or to bake your own pots in which to grow herbs or cultivate lavender oils – you really have to look no further than the towns and villages of the Cape Winelands. If it’s peace and quiet you seek, there’s yoga, silent retreats, beautiful places of worship, and scenic walking paths – this is where you will find that unique space your mind and body yearn for. www.capewinelands.gov.za

EDITOR'S CHOICE - SA FINE WINES

Bonnievale Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 The Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 displays beautiful, clean red fruit aromas, notably raspberry, supported by hints of liquorice. The juicy red fruit carries through on the palate and is supported by fine, ripe tannins that provide structure and depth to the wine. The 18 months in French and American oak delivers a balanced and well-integrated wine with lingering aftertaste.

Louisvale Chardonnay 2021 The nose is intensely complex with elegant aromas of lemon blossom, pineapple and apricot, toast, and spice notes. The palate is smooth and buttery with a lingering aftertaste. Food pairing: Pairs well with poultry, white meat, fish and rich pastas.

Food pairing: Enjoy with game and red meats.

De Wetshof Estate Lilya Rose 2022 Hues of onionskin and salmon-pink are the result of a rose made to the classic method of bleeding the juice of red grapes shortly after crushing. The floral aroma leads to freshness on the palate, showing notes of red berries, stone-fruit, and plums, with a lingering undertone of light spice and honeycomb. Food pairing: Perfect partner for ceviche with granadilla dressing.

Nuy Mastery Sauvignon Blanc Nuy Mastery Sauvignon Blanc 2021 is a bright, pale gold colour with distinct green hue. It exudes aromas of ripe tropical fruit with kiwi and fynbos undertones. The wine presents hints of blackcurrant and stewed prunes. On the palate it is a full fruit driven wine with initial tropical fruit. The acidity of this wine will cleanse the palate and leave the balanced fruit leaf as a long lingering aftertaste. Food pairing: The wine can be enjoyed with seafood dishes – particularly fresh crayfish.

Stellenzicht Thunderstone Red 2018 Delicate perfume and intricate aromatics. Prominent red berry fruits, cherries and savoury spices. The palate is medium bodied brimming with freshness and juicy red fruits. Hints of sweet spice and lacy tannins gives this wine a soft finish. Food pairing: Perfect with creamy tomato and chorizo soup.

Elgin Vinters Sandstone 2021 A full-bodied, elegant, and beautifully balanced wine. Floral notes of passionflower, honeysuckle, and soft vanilla combine with yellow stone fruit and pear on the palate, along with an underlying minerality, imparting its signature style. A rounded mouthfeel and creaminess with a textured finish. A true expression of this unique terroir. Food pairing: Try lemon-herbed chicken, grilled fish with mango salsa, caprese salad (mozzarella, ripe heirloom tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, and fresh basil), mushroom and goat cheese tart or seafood pasta.

EDITOR'S CHOICE - SA FINE WINES

De Wetshof Estate Limestone Hill Chardonnay 2022 The De Wetshof Estate Limestone Hill Chardonnay never sees oak, and offers impeccably pure, refreshing apple, peach and lemon fruit, a lovely lees richness of texture, and a nutty, chalky, fruitfilled finish of imposing length. Understated and less tropical than some of the better un-oaked Chardonnays, this wine possesses far better balance and sheer drinkability – not to mention more finesse. Food pairing: Perfect with beer battered fish.

Louisvale V Barrels Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 Powerful, concentrated, rich, multi-layered wine with aromas and flavours of black currant, dark chocolate and hints of cedar and cigar box. The wine is approachable now but will develop in complexity with careful cellaring. Food pairing: Pairs well with roasts and red meat.

Nuy Nuy Barbieri Idro Red Muscadel A stellar debut for fortified muscat de Frontignan. Five years in old oak has honed it into a finely polished cross between tawny ‘port’ and muscadel, the raisin character interleaved with citrus rind and dried apricot, tempered by tangy acidity. Food pairing: Ideal with matured cheeses especially with blue cheese.

Bonnievale Chardonnay 2021 The Limited Release Chardonnay displays a lot of citrus aromas, especially lime and grapefruit flavours that carry through to the palate. The wine is crisp and fresh with a distinct flinty finish. The French oak used to mature the wine for seven months is well-integrated and supports the fruit but also delivers a smooth rounded mouthfeel. Food pairing: Enjoy with duck, pork or a platter of matured cheeses.

Stellenzicht Tristone Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 Delicate perfume and intricate aromatics. Prominent red berry fruits, cherries and savoury spices. The palate is medium bodied brimming with freshness and juicy red fruits. Hints of sweet spice and lacy tannins gives this wine a soft finish. Food pairing: Perfect with steak and pepper sauce or leg of lamb with a mint jelly.

Elgin Vinters Ponthuis 2021 An elegant and complex wine. Ripe cherries with earthy characteristics. A lengthy finish with an aftertaste filled with a mélange of black berries, earthiness, spice, and concentrated soft velvety tannins with a firm grip. Food pairing: Pair wonderfully with the sweet and smoky flavours of barbeque. In particular, barbecued pork and skewers with bacon wrap.
