Filling up at a petrol station International travellers will note that in SA, locals do not pump their own “gas” aka petrol. Petrol attendants fill your tank and are also responsible for checking oil and water levels as well as tyre pressure. While not compulsory, it is polite to tip your petrol attendant anything between R5 to R50.
