From the Editor WIN

Getting out of your bubble

You are never too old to explore, but exploration doesn’t necessarily mean climbing mountains or doing something extreme.

Exploration is about expanding your horizons. Sometimes we can be creatures of comfort. We all generally have regular spots we frequent, and while there is nothing wrong to have a favourite, if we don’t explore other options we will never experience anything different.

I recently came across a social media post in which a mature lady was questioning whether she was too old to make a change regarding lifestyle. The responses to that were inspiring – people highlighted their own personal journeys of trying new things and explaining how they were personally richer for it.

That got me thinking that we often forget how rich South Africa is in terms of offering new experiences. I am not oblivious to budget constraints, but there are loads of experiences that can be undertaken at a very reasonable cost.

Exploration to me is part of continuous growth – as we travel around South Africa (or outside) we learn new things. We start to realise how rich our country is in terms of history, culture and experiences. Books are great, but first-hand exploration enriches the soul and inspires us to learn more, experience more and also appreciate more.

We live in a land alive with experiences; we sometimes just need to get out of our comfort zone and find it!

Have a superb autumn exploring!

Tips for autumn travellers

1 WEATHER

For the most part, Autumn in South Africa is known for its moderate temperatures, however, it is important to note that different parts of SA have different climate conditions.

Generally, temperatures are moderate, however, mornings and nights become a bit cooler. Depending on your adventure it’s a good idea to keep a jacket on hand in case temperatures drop.

While it might not be the summer it is still important to wear sunscreen throughout the year. According to reports UV rays are just as intense in other seasons and can penetrate through clouds.

3

Be alert

If driving using a GPS and you are unfamiliar with an area, it is advisable to Google the area and speak to locals to ascertain if these are high-risk hi-jacking spots. If so, opt to take an alternate route.

New FlySafair Route

According to reports, from 2 April 2024, FlySafair will offer flights from Cape Town to Kruger National Park.

2 Public transport

Generally, it is advisable to hire a vehicle to get around South Africa – particularly if you want to do road trips.

Reliable public transport is available in certain parts of Cape Town using the MyCiTi buses, and in Johannesburg, the Gautrain is a good option. Uber and Bolt (e-hailing taxi services) are available in metro areas.

4 Loadshedding

Loadshedding (electricity outages) continues to be a reality in SA. Download an app such as Eskom se Push to keep up to speed on the loadshedding schedule so you can plan accordingly. For the most part, restaurants and hotels have back-up generators.

TRAVEL TIPS

5 Beat the blister

Hiking is a popular activity, and one of the most common injuries that can occur is a blister. To prevent a blister it’s advisable to invest in good quality hiking socks, sock liners, foot powder, and the appropriate hiking shoes.

Public holidays in autumn

21 March: Human Rights Day

29 March: Good Friday

1 April: Family Day

27 April: Freedom Day

1 May: Workers’ Day

29 May: South African general elections

7

Scoring on flight bookings

6 Allergies

Spring is most often cited as being allergy season, but it's important to note that sometimes when camping or hiking in the bush you will encounter flora that you are not used to. Always make sure you have antihistamines on hand in case of an allergic reaction.

Bear in mind this is not an exact science, but there are potential ways to score some good deals on flights such as:

• Booking flights in advance, however, you can also score a deal on last-minute flights if the airline has not filled their flight.

• Travelling in non-peak seasons.

• Often the best time to book a flight is on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

• You can score some amazing flight deals if you opt for a holiday package.

• You don’t need to use the same airline – check different airlines for departures and returns as the prices differ.

• Use rewards programmes linked to your bank accounts and other rewards programmes.

• Stay connected via social media channels to check if there are any promo deals.

Only the best!

OVER THE YEARS CAPE POINT VINEYARDS (CPV) HAS BEEN A FIRM FAVOURITE FOR PEOPLE “IN THE KNOW”. THE VENUE HAS BEEN REVITALISED WITH A RECENT REFURBISHMENT, BUT MORE IS TO COME WITH EXCITING PROJECTS IN THE PIPELINE.

ISLIEDH HERBERT, CAPE POINT VINEYARDS MARKETING MANAGER (AND MEMBER OF THE VAN DER SPUY FAMILY – OWNERS OF CPV) TELLS ROVE SA A BIT MORE…

“We recently renovated the entire venue in 2023 and revealed a fresh new look that is modern. Visitors will notice that the colours we have used is reflective of the natural surrounds – which by the way is magnificent. When we decided to undertake a revamp, we saw it as the perfect opportunity to introduce some new elements and offerings such as state-of-the-art conferencing facilities and more,” says Herbert.

Convenience, relaxation and beauty

“As a wine farm that offers only the best, we have enhanced the experience for visitors with a new bar, a shop and as

mentioned earlier upgraded conference facilities. The idea we have is to offer ultimate convenience for guests. If you want to have a family day out – we have a space to keep kids occupied.

“If you want to simply enjoy great food and wine whilst enjoying panoramic views, we offer this. If you are a business person –we have facilities to accommodate business meetings. We can cater for either large or small business groups. Additionally, our executive Chef has created a scrumptious conferencing menu to cater to all needs.

“Something we also enjoy at CPV is hosting events such as

12 | AUTUMN 2024 • rovesa.co.za COVER FEATURE

weddings, conferences, year-end functions, birthday parties and even product launches. We also host a few public events and are expecting to increase this in the future.”

Good news is that the shop is fully operational seven days a week. Herbert adds, “We offer a variety of products such as our wines, coconut bread pre-mix, silk scarves and the most delicious vinaigrettes!”

Looking ahead

With reference to food, a new menu was launched in 2023 with huge success and it is expected that the refreshed menu – expected in April 2024 – will also be greeted with enthusiasm.

"Looking back, we have been on an amazing journey, and we are thrilled that our visitors have whole-heartedly embraced our transformation. Many of our regulars have been with us since the beginning – when we were just a small kitchen offering picnic baskets – and just love what we have done. They feel as though Cape Point Vineyards is growing up and keeping up with the current times.

“We are not done yet. We have a variety of projects in the pipeline such as hosting some amazing events such as unique dining experiences and a revitalised wine club – visitors can visit our website and social media pages to stay in the loop.

“At the heart of our business is family and community. We aim to create amazing experiences for everyone who visits our establishment. We welcome all to join us, whether on an exclusive or non-exclusive basis, to come soak in the surrounds at our beautiful venue,” concludes Herbert.

Highlights of a rich historical legacy

CPV is a family-owned wine farm that embraces family-values and being involved in the community.

1708: Meldt van der Spuy arrives in Cape Town only to fall in love with the city’s majestic vineyards and mountains by the sea. He was the only member of his family to immigrate to South Africa. Meldt van der Spuy acquired one of only four liquor licenses at the time.

1752: At least 30 000 vines were registered for excise purposes on the existing Cape Point Vineyards farm.

1996: Vines were replanted by current owner and has enjoyed award-winning status ever since its maiden vintage.

1998: Establishment of the vineyards and cellar (the only ones in the district) led to the declaration of Cape Point Wine of Origin.

2000: First vintage of Cape Point Vineyards was released.

2001: First release of Sauvignon Blanc, which was an instant success.

2003: First release of the Isliedh, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon white blend.

2007: Won World’s Best Sauvignon Blanc – Decanter Award.

2010: Won World’s Best Blended White Wine – Decanter Award.

2023: Refurbishment/revamp of the establishment.

Hessequa, from coastal bliss to forest serenity

BOXED IN BY THE LANGEBERG MOUNTAINS ALONG ITS NORTHERN BORDER AND THE INDIAN OCEAN MAKING UP ITS COASTLINE, THE HESSEQUA REGION IS NEARLY 6 000KM2 OF UNBLEMISHED NATURAL BEAUTY THAT IS ACHING TO BE EXPLORED

The Hessequa region is interconnected through numerous biking and hiking routes, agricultural shows, fishing events, six municipal resorts, and the HSQA Art Route, which is a collaborative effort by artists and artisans to make local art accessible for visitors while empowering fellow creatives in the area. Here are some highlights from my recent adventures in the area.

Witsand

This small coastal town, with a population of around 600, epitomises an outdoor and relaxed lifestyle.

Kayaking in the river is great fun when the tides are changing. Wait for low tide, then the kids can search for pansy shells along the sandbanks where fishermen pull out bait prawns or blood worms, which they later use as bait to fish for kabeljou or gunter.

Fishermen beware; with the odd bull shark lurking under the hulls of vessels, it’s not uncommon for a catch to be eaten up while being reeled in. This is why the bull shark has been dubbed the river’s “tax man”.

On a windy day, the skyline around the river mouth is speckled with the various colours of polyester kites. The tides, a steady wind pushing in towards Malgas, and a shifting sandbank that creates a flat surface on the water, make Witsand a prime kitesurfing destination, especially for beginners hoping to

improve their freestyle kite technique.

No matter where you stay, you will be within walking distance of The Anchorage seaside restaurant, where you can enjoy fish and chips with sundowners and the sound of the waves lapping on the shore.

Stilbaai

Hessequa is a Khoi-Khoi word that means “people of the trees” and refers to the indigenous tribes who once occupied the land. In Stilbaai and its surrounds, there is a Heritage Route that includes the ancient fish traps at Skulpiesbaai, the cave drawings and artifacts on display at Blombos Archaeological Museum, and the Anglo-Boer War Memorial near Putstop.

At the Homestead Building where the tourism bureau is situated, you can see freshwater eels being fed chicken livers by hand. This is quite extraordinary since Stilbaai is the only place in Africa where eels gather in a pond.

While there are numerous nature reserves to roam about and restaurants to feast at, Stilbaai is the very definition of coastal living. The list of water sports and beach activities includes swimming, surfing, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, kayaking, and more. If you plan your trip, you could also make it in time for the Galjoen Derby.

The nearby villages of Jongensfontein, Melkhoutfontein, and

16 | AUTUMN 2024 • rovesa.co.za EXPLORE

Vermaaklikheid are worth visiting for their unique offerings. Be sure to stop in at Inverroche Distillery for a bottle of their fynbos-infused gin.

Heidelberg

Named after its namesake in Germany, Heidelberg is steeped in a rich history that calls out to visitors from every building. With wide roads that accommodated the ox and horse-drawn wagons of old, high-ceilinged farmhouses built in the 1700s with clay bricks, and a modest-looking Post Office, the town is easy to navigate on foot for a self-guided historic walking tour.

The town is famous for being the southernmost battle point in the Anglo-Boer War; the British had army barracks in the centre of town, where rumours still rustle of a curious skirmish between Boer and Brit.

Down the road from the newly renovated Dutch Reformed Church, is Star Nation Art Studios, where they offer art classes with a professional artist or a chance to make a skittle with the help of a blacksmith.

Make some time to explore the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy or play a round of golf at the Heidelberg Golf Course.

Riversdale

A short drive along Garcia's Pass will lead travellers to the Sleeping Beauty Hiking Trail. This comfortable scenic trail

AUTUMN 2024 • rovesa.co.za | 17 EXPLORE

leads up from the old Toll House to the mountain peak, which forms the famous crest of “The Sleeping Beauty” where she rests peacefully among the Fynbos.

Wine lovers should make their way to the Baleia Winery, where they do a wine tasting while ruminating over the unique terroir and the diversity of grapes grown on the Cape South Coast.

Some historical gems worth visiting are the Julius Gordon Africana Museum and the Old Jail Coffee Shop. Besides horseback-riding excursions for nature lovers or boating and bass fishing on the Korentepoort Dam, there is also a nine-hole golf course at the Riversdale Golf Club.

Gouritsmond

Known as the fishing mecca of the Garden Route. Gouritsmond plays host to some of the world’s most famous sporting fishermen and fishing events.

There is a constant buzz of activity on the beaches; kids swimming in the tidal pool, surfers braving the swells around the exposed point break of the river’s mouth, and stand-up paddle boarders gliding along the smaller waves while shutting off from the stresses of everyday life.

Albertinia

When visiting the peaceful town of Albertinia, where locals aspire to “healing through nature”, go to the Alcare Aloe factory shop where they have harnessed the bitter juice of the indigenous Aloe ferox plant to create a selection of skincare and wellness products to treat just about any ailment.

Fellow writers, if you are after creative inspiration, find it at the Voelroepersfontein Guesthouse & Writer's Retreat. Wait until night has fallen, then take a stroll to the old Whispering Tree, a giant wild fig tree that speaks only to those who seek its wise council.

Albertinia is also home to the Garden Route Game Lodge that is home to the Big 5 in all its splendour. The lodge has buffalo, different buck, rhinos, wildebeest, lions, majestic elephants, and a couple of shy hippos.

The Hessequa region at a glance

Regardless of which town you visit, expect to find an endless supply of hiking trails, beaches, art exhibits, curio shops, eateries, friendly locals, and breathtaking scenery to boot.

Embracing the magic of the mighty Drakensberg

THERE IS SOMETHING MAGICAL ABOUT THE DRAKENSBERG. AS MANY TIMES AS VISITORS EXPLORE THIS ENCHANTING REGION IT STILL RETAINS AN AURA OF MYSTIC WHERE THE LAND HOLDS MANY STORIES OF THE PAST WHILE CREATING NEW LONG-LASTING MEMORIES

KwaZulu-Natal’s Drakensberg mountains range, from the iconic Amphitheatre in the north to Bushman’s Nek in the south, is a rugged range of igneous basalt forming the border between South Africa and Lesotho. It is also one of the greatest water catchment areas in South Africa.

The highest peak is Thabana Ntlenyana at 3 482m and the Thukela Falls is now the highest falls in the world, cascading 983m into the valley below. It is an impressive region to visit.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, this is an area of captivating beauty, with a wide range of endemic species. Within its hills and caves are the greatest collection of rock art in the world. It is known in isiZulu as ‘uKhahlamba’ which means ‘Barrier of Spears’, a perfect description of the peaks and rugged mountains that make up this impressive range.

Planning a trip?

The Drakensberg is divided into three areas: Southern, Central and Northern Drakensberg. Each area offers visitors the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the stunning surrounds and experience the best nature has to offer.

Autumn in the "berg" is beautiful. The landscapes are transformed by the golden grasslands and the weather becomes more settled with fewer summer storms. Birding enthusiasts will find the endemic Gurney’s sugarbird feasting on the garden aloes. Temperate days are perfect for hiking and the cool evenings make it the ideal destination for fireside gatherings and chats with friends.

Since the Drakensberg is an eco-tourism destination, the natural landscapes offer a wide range of activities for tourists. There are challenging hikes for adventure enthusiasts and easy strolls for those wish to enjoy and explore the outdoors. The

views are breathtaking, the surroundings healing, and crisp clear berg streams create space for tranquillity and solitude. Geological features provide the opportunity to explore caves and overhangs and the indigenous forests and open grasslands are home to birds, antelope and other friendly wildlife.

Hiking highlights

Highlights in the Northern Drakensberg include the Tugela Gorge and the Amphitheatre ascent hikes. The gorge hike meanders up the Thukela River with boulder hopping on the final stretch to reach the sandstone tunnel beneath the wall of the Amphitheatre.

Alternatively, hikers can drive to the Sentinel car park and hike to the top of the escarpment up the chain ladders. This is possibly the most accessible part of the Drakensberg range. After just two hours’ effort, one can be on top of the world –3 100m above sea level! A further 45 minutes to the top of the falls and then the ultimate reward; a magnificent view of the valleys below. The newly installed via ferrata to the top of the Amphitheatre is an extreme adventure for the brave and fearless. (“via ferrata” translates as “iron path” in English. It refers to metal rungs, ladders or permanently fixed safety wire as a means of crossing otherwise tricky and steep rocky terrain.)

Battlefields, golf courses and restaurants

The central Drakensberg region is home to Cathedral Peak, Champagne Castle and Cathkin Peak. It is well known for the array of battlefields tours, golf courses and eateries. The Champagne Valley offers a range of activities from bird shows, scooter tours, and hot-air ballooning to beer and wine tastings, and much more. This is the conferencing capital of the area and there really is something for everyone.

The southern ‘berg’ is home to the Sani Pass, a 4x4 enthusiast’s dream destination with the highest pub in Africa nestled at the top. Fishermen can enjoy open water trout fishing in the region and the Rhino Peak is a great climbers’ challenge. The southern region tends to get more snowfall in the winter months and snow seekers are thrilled when the weather plays the game!

Accommodation from budget camping to luxury lodges

Accommodation offerings range in price and comfort, from budget camping to comfortable cottages to gorgeous hotels and luxury lodges. Self-catering or full inclusive packages are available. Larger resorts and establishments can host gatherings and weddings while solitude cottages and smaller boutique lodges provide something special for the more discerning traveller.

While adventure and adrenalin junkies can get their full in this mountain paradise, it is also the remote locations with the peace and quiet that calls to holidays makers to rest and be rejuvenated.

With wellness a priority, retreats and spas offer an alternative to the thrill of adventure. Tranquil escapes to quiet cottages, relaxing signature spa massages or afternoons spent next to a gurgling ‘berg stream help restore the weary.

Taste excellence at the House of

Graham Beck

THE HOUSE OF GRAHAM BECK, A THIRD-GENERATION, FAMILY-OWNED TITAN IN CAP CLASSIQUE PRODUCTION, IS DEDICATED TO MASTERING ROBERTSON’S TERROIR IN PURSUIT OF THE PERFECT BUBBLE.

Echoing the esteemed qualities of France's Champagne region, the estate benefits from limestone-rich soils, significant diurnal temperature variations, and the generous glow of African sunshine.

This unique combination lays the foundation for crafting premier Cap Classique in the same revered Méthode Traditionnelle as Champagne, involving a meticulous second

fermentation within the bottle and a minimum of 12 months lees ageing to create its distinguished character.

This method, a timeless vocation that demands patience and dedication, has guided the craft of the House’s Cap Classique since 1983. Today, the House’s offerings consistently share the podium with the world's finest sparkling wines. In 2023, Graham Beck's flagship Cuvée Clive was crowned 'Cap Classique of the Year' for the fifth occasion by acclaimed wine critic Tim Atkin.

42 | AUTUMN 2024 • rovesa.co.za ADVERTORIAL - GRAHAM BECK

The Robertson valley: a worthy weekend sojourn

A two-hour drive from the bustle of Cape Town, the House of Graham Beck is situated in the undulating Robertson Wine Valley. Thanks to rolling hills, grand manor houses and sunny skies, this accessible interlude from city life lends itself perfectly to an impromptu day trip. Yet it truly shines as a leisurely weekend retreat or as a worthy waypoint for those bound for the scenic stretches of the Garden Route.

This eponymous valley is a study in contrasts, not least in its dramatic diurnal temperature swings. Such variances, along with a mosaic of microclimates, have blessed the region with a rich tapestry of soils, positioning it at the vanguard of South African viticulture.

A warm welcome at the House of Graham Beck

As the proud producer of South Africa's top-rated Cap Classique and boasting an exceptional tasting space to warmly welcome visitors, the House of Graham Beck is a beacon of hospitality in the Robertson Valley. The region, celebrated for its congenial atmosphere, invites guests with the promise of open arms and expert guidance.

Within the Graham Beck estate, the Tasting Space is a microcosm of the valley's charm, offering a window to rolling hills and meticulous vineyards that stretch towards the horizon. Here, visitors are encouraged to sink into soft leather couches and surrender to the relaxed tempo of winery life. The space is staffed by aficionados whose wine knowledge will ensure that every tasting is both educational and pleasurable.

Tasting highlights include the 'Deluxe Cap Classique & A Glass Act' – a masterful presentation of five Cap Classiques,

including the lauded Cuvée Clive, and other vintages that exemplify Graham Beck’s craft, all enhanced by glassware that elevates the tasting to an art form. Not to be outdone, the 'Sparkle & Pop' pairing marries the vivacity of sparkling wines with gourmet popcorn, a playful nod to South African flavours.

For those seeking a more tactile indulgence, the Harvest Platters provide a cornucopia of local fare. From a selection of fine cheeses to the hearty Cheese and Charcuterie Combo Platter and the delicately smoked Rainbow Trout Platter, each offering is a tribute to the region’s bountiful resources. It is an experience designed to be savoured, as one soaks in the extraordinary ambience that is a signature of the Graham Beck cellar door.

Whether it’s through the nuanced elegance of their Cap Classique, the immersive allure of their tasting experiences, or the simple joy of a weekend getaway, the House of Graham Beck offers an invitation to taste excellence and celebrate the enduring charm of South African viticulture.

Tandem paragliding

For an exhilarating and highly scenic adventure try out paragliding in Franschhoek. The paragliding site located in Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve at the top of Franschhoek pass, allows guests a birds-eye view of the town as well as the rugged surrounds consisting of mountains and the lushness of wine farms. Note: paragliding is weather dependent.

Acrobranch

In Stellenbosch you can test your balance and embrace your inner child (or inner Tarzan). Climb ropes, balance on a variety of crossings such as walkways, bridges and more, and zipline through the trees. There are different levels suited for varying fitness levels and ages.

Eat some more

It is pretty well-known that the majority of wine farms and estates serve up amazing meals. However, it is not only wine establishments that serve up topnotch cuisine – the winelands in general have a number of restaurants, delis, and cafes to suit even the most discerning palate.

Get active

There are various hiking and MTB trails suited for a variety of fitness levels in a number of areas. Jonkershoek is a popular MTB trail for biking enthusiasts.

Not quite hiking or biking, there are also guided Segway tours at Spier that weave through the vineyards.

If you want something a bit more restful, a great walkabout can be had at Babylonstoren, which sees you walking alongside a variety of fruit trees.

Surf in the winelands

In Stellenbosch you can try out e-foiling at the dam at Devonbosch. An e-foil is a surfboard with an electrically powered propeller, which moves the board through water. Basically, it’s like surfing but without any waves or wind necessary.

Fish

A number of wine farms offer fishing (as well as fly fishing) as an activity. Trout, bass, carp, fishing, and more are options.

Art

If art is your vibe, there are numerous galleries to explore in the winelands. A visit to Spier offers guests the opportunity to visit indoor exhibitions, as well as explore outdoor artwork displays.

Shop

With many boutique stores in the winelands, visitors have the opportunity to shop for non-commercial items. A good spot to explore is Stellenbosch as well as markets in the area which sell fresh produce, arts & crafts, and food – a perfect outing suited for the whole family.

Mountain retreat bliss

IMAGINE BEING SURROUNDED BY ENDLESS, BREATHTAKING MOUNTAIN SLOPES AND THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPE, ALL IN ITS QUIET SPLENDOUR. YOU TAKE A DEEP BREATH OF THE FRESH, CRISP AIR, AND AS YOU EXHALE, THE NOISE OF THE WORLD FADES AWAY.

The Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort 4-star rating could easily pass as 5 stars. It is nestled in the heart of the Cederberg mountains, off the N7, and just 170km from Cape Town.

Here you can take leisurely walks, bird watch, practice some archery, relax in a warm pool or dive into a glistening and clear pool all in one place. My recent stay at this fascinating retreat was a symphony of peacefulness and adventure.

The surrounding ancient peaks have borne witness to the ebb and flow of human endeavour, from the nomadic Khoisan peoples who roamed these lands to the intrepid settlers and explorers who followed in their footsteps. The mountains are steeped in stories of resilience, adventure, and the enduring

spirit of exploration.

Did you know? In the old days, wagons used to traverse the tracks over the mountain. However, the crossing was so difficult that wagons had to be dismantled and carried over the steep bits to the other side!

Variety of accommodation options

The resort offers a variety of accommodation options, from cozy chalets to spacious villas, all thoughtfully designed to blend in with the natural beauty that surrounds us. Each unit is equipped with modern amenities to ensure a comfortable stay for guests.

chalets, situated close enough to the hotel to walk but far away enough for peace and tranquillity. The views down the valley are spectacular. Talk about heaven on earth…

The rustic interior, decorated with wooden furnishings and a fireplace, with warmth and comfort, invited me to savour the simple joys of mountain living.

So much to do

The resort has a beautiful wellness centre that offers face and body spa treatments, an ideal way to unwind and enjoy a bit of pampering. Unfortunately, I was not able to enjoy a session due to time constraints but there is always next time!

While at the resort you can get competitive at table tennis, snooker, mini golf, archery, or outdoor chess or let the kids jump on the trampoline in the children’s play area, whilst you sip on a cocktail or mocktail basking in the sun.

Alternatively, opt for a walk in the gardens filled with indigenous fynbos and test your observation skills at bird spotting and identification. There is also the option to picnic under towering trees, letting each moment offer an opportunity to rejuvenate body, mind, and soul.

The resort is known for a phenomenal zipline experience enjoyed by adventure junkies. Had the ziplining not been out of order due to recent flooding in the Citrusdal area, I

would have put my daredevil hat on and ziplined away…

Although I opted not to venture onto the hiking trails, there was no shortage of ways to pass time. It does not matter in which season you visit the resort as it has an indoor heated pool, as well as an outdoor swimming pool.

Hospitality in its purest form

Throughout my stay, the staff at the resort symbolised hospitality in its purest form. From the heartfelt welcome upon arrival to the attentive service at mealtimes, their genuine care and attention made me feel like an honoured guest in their mountain sanctuary.

There is so much more I can say but make the time to book a holiday and you will be surprised. It's a fantastic place and a great wedding venue too. It has the most beautiful view, delicious food, professional service, and luxurious rooms, everything one needs to enjoy a perfect holiday.

I will remember my time at the Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort as a journey of discovery and renewal. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty and storied history of the Cederberg Mountains, I found solace, adventure, and a deep appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.

Whether seeking a romantic escape, a family retreat, or simply a moment of respite in nature's embrace, this hidden gem offers an unforgettable getaway into the heart of South Africa's wilderness.

Scent-sational sojourns in the Western Cape!

ESSENTIAL OILS, ESSENTIAL RELAXATION AND ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCES; THE ROVE TEAM, IN DIRE NEED OF SOME R&R, HIT THE ROAD IN SEARCH OF THE ULTIMATE PAMPER AND WELLBEING EXPERIENCE.

Lanzerac, Stellenbosch

My spa-scape kicked off the minute I entered Lanzerac. Just driving onto the property sets the tone; it’s a place of serenity with its lush surrounds of vineyards, majestic mountains and the subtle fresh forest breeze.

The spa itself feels decadent and thoughtfully designed to create an ambience of luxury and relaxation – this is further enhanced with beverage offerings of Cap Classique or sparkling grape juice.

The spa treatment menu is diverse, but since the establishment is known to be the home of the world’s first commericially bottled Pinotage, it makes sense to try out the Pinotage massage. It is similar to an aromatherapy massage but uses different essential oils and focuses on reliving stress in tension areas. While it was a full body massage, there was discussion about certain tense and problem areas and deciding upon pressure.

The scent of the oil was pleasing but not overpowering. The massage therapist was intuitive regarding the pressure and technique to use on various parts of the body resulting in a relaxing experience that promoted holistic unwinding.

Half-asleep, 60 minutes later, I am gently told that it’s time to get up, but this is not the end as the establishment offers the use of facilities such as a sauna, jacuzzi, steam room, and an indoor heated azure-coloured pool and jacuzzi – which boasts incredible panoramic views of the outdoor landscape.

Overall, I felt my spa-scape at Lanzerac remained true to the DNA of any experience at Lanzerac – decadent, luxurious and personalised.

J Wellness Circle, Taj Hotel, Cape Town

J Wellness Circle is more than just a spa; it's a sanctuary that draws from the rich heritage of ancient Eastern wellness philosophies targeting physical, spiritual and mental rejuvenation.

I was treated to the Sushupti treatment, a signature offering that promotes restful sleep. My journey started with some aromatic Jaggery tea, followed by a relaxing foot spa.

The Sushupti treatment began with a blend of exfoliation and massage, followed by a wrap of honey, rice, and cream, designed to enhance blood circulation, which left my skin looking radiant. The Indian head massage was an unexpected delight, with divine-smelling oils that also aims to address scalp issues. Rinsing off the wrap with warm milk was a sinfully luxurious experience that left my skin smooth and silky.

A full body massage followed, and my therapist expertly applied the right amount of pressure to relieve my sore joints and stress. To conclude I had a facial massage with signature oils.

Overall, in approximately two hours this pamper session can best be described as transformative. I felt revitalised – mind, body and soul.

Babylonstoren, Stellenbosch

Being an addict of Turkish series and the Ottoman empire, I was on my way to Babylonstoren to experience the Hamam, better known as a Turkish bath.

On arrival, as I walked to the Garden Spa, I was inspired by the beauty of the gardens which features a variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs which is laid out in an appealing manner.

My “Tellak” (attendant) escorted me to one of the Hammam bathhouses where we embarked on the journey of a 60 min private hammam water ritual. The ambiance of the room was just as I imagined. The room was warm and tranquil, adorned with beautiful marble tiles creating a soothing and relaxed environment.

The Tellak started off the session with a thorough full-body exfoliation, utilising a special exfoliating glove or mitt known as a “kese".

Following the exfoliation, I was rinsed off with warm water, and it felt that along with the soap any skin impurities were washed away too.

Next up was a full body massage using aromatherapy oils, which helped to further relax my muscles. To conclude the session, I was rinsed off with cold water which left me feeling refreshed, revitalised and deeply relaxed.

I love spa days, and I would have to say that this experience stands out in my mind – it was heavenly and being a fan of many things Turkish, I loved the tradition of the entire session.

Silver Forest, Somerset West

As you drive up to Silver Forest in the Helderberg region, you are greeted by breathtaking views and winding roads. A leisurely walk from the parking lot leads you up a set of stairs and into a serene garden filled with colourful flowers and lush green lawns.

The path takes you to the restaurant and swimming pool, where you can bask in tranquil surroundings. It's the perfect environment to enjoy some R&R, and exactly what I’m looking for.

It was straight to the spa for me, where I was warmly greeted by the friendly staff. Fresh air, comfort, tranquillity... I was ready for some much needed me time. The spa offers various options, and I was excited to try the Kalahari Summer Adventure.

My treatment took place in a beautiful and quiet upstairs room. My therapist checked the pressure I wanted and then put her skills to good use massaging my body.

The soothing scent filled the room, adding to the heavenly experience. As the therapist worked on releasing knots in my back, I felt a deep sense of relaxation, with only a few tender spots promising a feeling of looseness afterward. I wished I could stay in that moment forever.

But the spoiling wasn’t over just yet. I enjoyed a delightful Honeybush facial. My face was glowing and felt smooth after all the Kalahari range products she used. After that, I went for an express summer pedicure, and what a treat it was. I had a stunning view of the pool with a cool breeze blowing as my feet were made to look super cute and soft.

It was an afternoon of absolute bliss, pampering, and relaxation.

Steenberg Spa, Constantia Valley

Nested beautifully within Constantia winelands, the Steenberg Luxury Spa caters for a broad audience, should you wish to visit it alone, with your tween or as a couple.

The space is airy, seamlessly integrated with nature to the extent that clients can choose to have their massages within the spa scented garden. Additionally, the spa features a sparkling pool, a bar, showering facilities and lockers in the cloakrooms.

My massage therapist explained that the space can be transformed for events such as bridal parties, baby showers, and birthdays.

I had my treatment outdoors, and other sensory elements came into play that beautifully complemented the massage. Birds tweet, the scent of freshly cut lawn fills the air, a gentle breeze comes and goes as it pleases, and soft sun rays filter through the trees sporadically.

All in all, my outdoor massage in the scented garden reaches a flawless 10/10 – there is just something special about opening your eyes to blue sky, powder-white clouds and being surrounded by different shades of greens.

Top 6 reasons to visit Tsitsikamma

THE TSITSIKAMMA NATIONAL PARK, NESTLED BETWEEN THE EASTERN CAPE AND WESTERN CAPE ALONG THE CAPTIVATING GARDEN ROUTE, FEATURES A RUGGED COASTLINE AND STUNNING SEASCAPE. ESTABLISHED IN 1964, IT STANDS AS ONE OF THE LARGEST MARINE RESERVES, ENCOMPASSING OVER 80 KILOMETRES OF COASTLINE.

1. Road tripping: It is not located particularly close to an airport – the closest commercial airports are either Port Elizabeth or George, which provides the perfect opportunity to have a mini road trip.

HIKING
Path to beautiful rocky beach. Shot on the Otter trail in the Tsitsikamma National Park, Garden Route area, Western Cape

Otter Trail: 5x strong

I'VE HIKED THE OTTER TRAIL COUNTLESS TIMES, AND I LIKE TO THINK THAT NO OTHER MAURITIAN GIRLS HAVE SET FOOT ON IT, LET ALONE FIVE TIMES! COME LAUGH WITH ME AS I DISCUSS MY PAST BLUNDERS; FROM BEING A COMPLETE ROOKIE TO BECOMING A SELF-PROCLAIMED PRE-PACKING HIKER ORGANISER EXTRAORDINAIRE! THE FAMOUS SAYING 'PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT' COULDN'T BE MORE APPLICABLE HERE.

The Otter Trail is a popular multiday hike spanning 42.5km that takes five days to complete. Located in the Tsitsikamma National Park, this hike is not for the faint of heart. It is strenuous – it takes you up sea cliffs into lush forests, down cascading waterfalls into multiple river crossings; all of that carrying your life on your back!

My first otter trail was a giant joke. With pretty much

HIKING

zero hiking experience, I went online to book my spot. Being the impulsive person I am, committing to a multiday hike leaving in just two days, seemed like an easy task. Booking confirmation made its way to my inbox, it was time to pack and gather whatever was needed on the recommended list.

Little did I know, I should have taken that list with a massive pinch of salt. I ended up packing hiking outfits for each day, multiple sleeping and lounging outfits. On the plus side, I was way ahead of every other hiker in the fashion department.

Regarding food, sadly it was a similar story. Lacking plastic containers at home, I ended up using a couple of heavy glass jars – yes in hindsight I realise how ridiculous that sounds now. I do think that I provided a level of amusement to the other hikers with my fashion sense, glass jars and complete lack of hiking etiquette.

Fast forward to my fifth Otter Trail adventure – my backpack weighed just under 10kg, a significant improvement from the whopping 22kg on my first hike! The Otter Trail only provides overnight huts, so hikers must carry everything needed for five days: food, clothing, toiletries, cooking equipment, and more.

Top lessons learned

• There's no need to strain your back with unnecessary weight. It's perfectly fine to wear the same hiking outfit daily and wash and dry underwear and socks overnight.

• Ziplock bags are amazing (and light) – and using fast-food salt, pepper, ketchup, and mayonnaise sachets saves space.

• A pillowcase stuffed with clothing items has become my go-to pillow substitute.

• Steer clear of cotton t-shirts and tops and opt for nylon hiking shirts instead. Unlike cotton, which absorbs sweat, nylon dries much quicker.

• Lace your hiking boots correctly as this helps relieve pressure and could potentially prevent blisters.

• Backpack shoulder straps should be customised to your body type and height to prevent back pain.

• Invest in a strong dry bag for river crossings to avoid all your belongings getting soaked.

In retrospect

All in all, each trip was an adventure and a learning curve. I could have done more extensive homework to fully prepare for my very first outdoor adventure, but looking back, it's amusing to remember the young, wild, and impulsive creature I once was, cruising into wild adventures with zero common sense but bursting with energy and zest for life. My recklessness often sparked chuckles from others, but it also led to making new friends around the nightly bonfire and walking away with a wealth of hiking tips and outdoor knowledge.

Self-drive tips

A self-drive game drive is an exciting and cost-effective way to experience our country’s incredible wildlife and natural landscapes. With careful planning, respect for nature, and a reliable car, you’re sure to have a safe and unforgettable adventure.

With loads of wildlife parks, holidaymakers are spoilt for choice. “Aside from the main deciding factor of which area you’d like to visit, you’ll also need to choose the type of experience you’re after,” advises Barend Smit, avid bush lover and Marketing Director of MotorHappy, a supplier of motor management solutions. Smit shares some tips for self-driving.

1. “When choosing your destination, remember to make sure you have the right type of car. Some areas might require a 4x4 or SUV,” says Smit. Additionally, make sure your car is insured and that your services are up to date. You don’t want to break down in the middle of a park just before the gates are about to close! If you have a service plan through MotorHappy, for example, in the event of a car breakdown, free roadside assistance and other benefits are included.

2. Before starting your game drive, check that all the lights and indicators are working, windscreen wipers are operational, and brakes are in good shape. Check that all fluids are at their recommended levels. Inspect your spare tyre and make sure you have the correct tools to change a tyre if necessary.

3. When packing for your game drive, remember to bring essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent, a first aid kit,

and plenty of water.

4. When you’re in the park, safety should always be a top priority. Observe the park’s speed limits and rules for approaching and viewing wildlife. Respect the animals’ personal space and maintain a safe distance; it’s for your safety and theirs. If you’re unsure about anything, ask park rangers for assistance.

5. Wildlife viewing requires patience. Animals might not always be immediately visible, so take your time, stop your engine, and listen. Keep noise to a minimum to avoid scaring off animals, and you’ll be rewarded with more sightings. “Be open to surprises and enjoy the unpredictability of nature,” Smit says.

6. Animals are often more active during the cooler times of the day, so plan your game drives around sunrise and sunset. These are the best times to witness predators on the hunt and other fascinating animal behaviours.

7. Finally, leave no trace, says Smit. Dispose of your rubbish in designated areas and do not disturb the natural environment. Stick to marked roads and trails to minimise your impact on the ecosystem.

Halting the decline of

unique frogs

AMPHIBIANS ARE DIVIDED INTO THREE GROUPS: FROGS, SALAMANDERS, AND CAECILIANS. WHILE ONLY ONE OF THESE GROUPS CAN BE FOUND IN SOUTH AFRICA (FROGS), THE COUNTRY HAS A REMARKABLE DIVERSITY OF FROG SPECIES SPREAD ACROSS MANY DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS, FROM THE DRY DUNES OF THE WEST COAST, THE SHALLOW WETLANDS OF THE FYNBOS BIOME AND THE GUSHING MOUNTAIN RIVERS OF THE DRAKENSBERG.

There are currently 134 recognised species of frog that occur within the country’s borders, boasting a surprising diversity of shapes, sizes and reproductive strategies adapted to the habitats they live in. Roughly half of these species are endemic to South Africa, meaning they are found nowhere else on earth.

Unfortunately, many of these species are under threat, a situation that is sadly increasingly common for amphibians right across the globe. Currently, 21% of the country’s unique amphibian species are experiencing declines and face a high risk of extinction with many more likely to be impacted into the future.

Main cause of decline of SA’s frogs is habitat modification

The root cause of these declines, both in South Africa and globally, is habitat modification – human activity that changes a region’s ecological function to the detriment of the species that live there. Typical examples include infrastructure development (buildings, roads, etc.) and the spread of invasive vegetation.

The widespread loss of natural habitats that support amphibians (and many other species) lead to population declines which in turn exacerbate other threats that

amphibians face such as disease, pollution and particularly, climate change, all of which speed up the race to extinction. A race that amphibians are sadly one of the unwilling leaders of.

Frogs are good indicators of ecosystem health

Declines in amphibian species are a worry for us all. They are a critical part of the natural ecosystem as both predator and prey. Despite their small size and peculiar shape, amphibians are voracious insect eaters and help keep pest populations in check.

From reducing mosquito numbers and disease-related impacts to mitigating crop damage through insect predation, the appetite of amphibians has direct benefits to human health and well-being. They are also an important food source for many larger animals (including us, in some regions) and are often the most locally abundant and accessible protein source, particularly in breeding season when hundreds of thousands of tadpoles play a critical role in the broader food web.

Amphibians are also good indicators of ecosystem health –their permeable skin and reliance on freshwater habitats make them sensitive to environmental change, and declining frog numbers can often indicate that the freshwater habitats they rely on are being impacted.

70 | AUTUMN 2024 • rovesa.co.za CONSERVATION

An animal that provides us with early warnings signs of a reduction in quality and extent of our most precious resource – freshwater – is a very useful one!

Endangered Wildlife Trust dedicated to conserving threatened amphibians

Fortunately, there are individuals and organisations that are working to reduce these declines to ensure that the benefits of healthy frog populations and their associated freshwater habitats are enjoyed by future generations to come. One such organisation is the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), a conservation NGO that runs a programme dedicated to conserving threatened amphibians and reptiles, the only one of its kind in southern Africa.

Through the Threatened Amphibian Programme (TAP), the EWT has worked to use a solid foundation of science to help safeguard amphibian species and their freshwater habitats. The programme uses innovative technologies to understand and monitor species and ecological conditions, legally protects critical freshwater habitats through the Biodiversity Stewardship process and collaborates with a diversity of partners to reduce key threats to amphibians and their habitats. This work is only made possible by the support of our donors.

What can you do to help?

A key aspect of conservation is education and awareness and the simple act of sharing why amphibians are under threat, and the benefits of reducing their declines, goes a long way.

Supporting organisations who focus on amphibian conservation also offers a direct way to contribute to amphibian conservation. More active participation in conserving South Africa’s amphibians is also possible; citizen science platforms such as iNaturalist allow you to share your observations of frogs, providing important data on where they occur that will feed into conservation planning.

Converting built-up areas of your property into natural spaces that reflect the local environment and ensuring property boundaries offer opportunity for amphibians and other animals to move through are other simple, achievable actions to help safeguard these incredible animals into the future.

AUTUMN 2024 • rovesa.co.za | 71 CONSERVATION
The Table Mountain Ghost Frog (Heleophryne rosei), a critically endangered species found only on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. A collaborative project is underway to improve the quality of its stream habitat on the iconic and busy mountain. The Rough Moss Frog (Arthroleptella rugosa) is restricted to a single mountain complex in the Western Cape of South Africa. Threatened primarily by habitat loss from invasive pine trees, this species is also listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Top 10 tips

for the responsible traveller

MANY OF US TRAVEL BECAUSE WE LOVE NATURE AND THE THRILL OF NEW EXPERIENCES BUT SOMETIMES OUR ENTHUSIASM FOR TRAVEL CAN DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD BY CAUSING POLLUTION, INCREASING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT AND HARMING NATURE. HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS OF HOW TO LEAVE ONLY THE LIGHTEST OF FOOTPRINTS BEHIND ON YOUR JOURNEY SO THAT YOU TOO CAN CALL YOURSELF A RESPONSIBLE TRAVELLER.

1. Slow down

Holidays are all about slowing down and this should include how we get to our holiday destination. Make sure you have plenty of time so that you don’t have to rush. We know that wildlife/vehicle collisions are not only a serious threat to wildlife but also to people inside a vehicle.

By dropping your speed and avoiding travel at night, you can help to prevent roadkill. Also, if you slow down, you will not only make it safer, but you will reduce your fuel consumption and carbon footprint.

2. Consider a staycation

Speaking of carbon footprints, why should only tourists enjoy your home town? You may be surprised how much fun it is to build a ‘staycation’ itinerary and how much more relaxed you’ll be by the end of the holidays, especially if you’ve included some outdoor activities like walking, swimming and cycling in the mix.

3. Live and let live

Astonishingly, even while we express our love for nature, it seems that we are equally intolerant of all the creatures that make up the circle of life – like insects, spiders and snakes.

Don’t be one of those people who whips out the Doom at the

first sight of a gogga. Get somebody to remove the spider for you (easily done by putting a glass over it and slipping a piece of paper underneath). Pack the mozzie repellent rather than resorting to poison.

And, should a snake cross your path, there’s usually a local snake catcher who will happily come and assist you with relocating your slithery guest.

4. BYO bottles and cups

If you don’t want to add to the pile of plastic waste already in the environment, then a little planning will stand you in good stead. Pack a reusable coffee mug and water bottle when you travel. That way you will be able to cut down on your consumption of single-use plastics – and stay hydrated and alert!

5. Be seafood savvy

Our oceans are in trouble, not least because of overfishing. Fortunately, WWF’s Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative makes it easy for you to make the right choices through its green/orange/red traffic light system.

If a fish species is labelled green it means you’re in the clear, orange means you should think twice, and red is a no-go. To find out more; download the WWF-SASSI app.

72 | AUTUMN 2024 • rovesa.co.za TOP TIPS

6. Plan your menus

Food waste is unacceptable in a country such as ours where many people go hungry, and it’s bad for the environment. Cut down on holiday food waste by planning your meals more carefully. That way you won’t end up with mountains of leftovers that get tipped into the bin.

7. Keep it seasonal

Another way to lighten your food footprint is by eating more seasonal fruit and vegetables that are locally grown. Find out where the closest farmer’s market is and enjoy your time picking out the freshest ingredients and experimenting with new recipes.

8. Think water

City dwellers aren’t always mindful of their water use. That’s why many guest houses and hotels remind us of this fact by suggesting we take shorter showers and not require our towels to be washed daily.

Wherever you are, treat water with all the respect it deserves, bearing in mind that many parts of South Africa are waterstressed. Remember, water doesn’t come from a tap; it comes from nature.

9. Be a conscious consumer

As a traveller, you have the power of your purse. Be a conscious consumer and check whether you are buying goods that are sustainable and legally harvested.

It’s a big no-no to buy that under-sized West Coast rock lobster from the side of the road. Check whether that cute little succulent plant wasn’t taken from the wild. And If it’s a bottle of wine, look out for the Cape Sugarbird logo which tells you whether it comes from Conservation Champion wine farm.

10. Spend time in nature

The lifeblood of our beautiful national parks and botanical gardens is the income they derive from visitors, so support them where you can and don’t begrudge the gate fee (if you are a local or over 60, you may also find that they have a special discount just for you).

There’s nothing quite like spending time in South Africa’s beautiful natural environment – from the towering mountains of the Drakensberg to the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean – to feel completely rejuvenated before you have to slip back behind your desk. Get out there and enjoy!

Rentals here are between R8 000 and R40 000 a month, with property sales ranging from R2 million to over R40 million.

5. Garden Route & Southern Cape: nature's own paradise

The Garden Route is a haven for nature enthusiasts.

"It’s where you live in harmony with nature," Gray explains. "A place where life moves at a serene pace."

This picturesque stretch offers a variety of living options, where rental options range from R7 500 to over R50 000 a month, with property sales between R3 million and over R70 million, depending on the location.

Finding that perfect balance

South Africa is more than a country; it's a world in itself. Each area, with its distinct personality and lifestyle, offers something unique.

"It’s about finding that perfect balance," Gray adds. "A place that resonates with your soul."

Whether you're drawn to the urban charm of Cape Town, the peaceful Cape Winelands, the sunny shores of KZN, the historic allure of Pretoria, or the natural splendor of the Garden Route, South Africa is a land brimming with opportunities for those seeking a new place to call home.

In South Africa, every location offers a different story and a different rhythm of life. It's about matching your lifestyle, your aspirations, and, of course, your budget, with the right place.

As Gray aptly puts it, "In each of these places, you're not just buying a home; you're embracing a lifestyle, a piece of South Africa's soul."

Under-the-radar islands

WHEN WE THINK OF ISLANDS NEAR AFRICA, WE OFTEN PICTURE POPULAR DESTINATIONS LIKE THE SEYCHELLES, MAURITIUS AND ZANZIBAR. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE LESSER-KNOWN AFRICAN ISLANDS? LET’S EXPLORE THESE HIDDEN GEMS.

DID YOU KNOW: St Brandon Island was named in 1506 by Portuguese sailors.

St Brandon Island

This exclusive destination is located roughly 430km northeast of Mauritius, about a 26-hour boat trip from Mauritius.

Planning is crucial for a once-in-a-lifetime fishing trip to St Brandon; only 200 visitors per year are allowed due to strict regulations. The island boasts powderwhite sand beaches and abundant fish, perfect for wade bone fishing. Birdwatchers can observe seabirds in their natural habitat.

Accommodation options on the island are basic and limited, as it is mainly inhabited by fishermen, with most visitors sleeping on a boat.

Mohéli

This is the smallest island in the Comoros’ Archipelago; a hidden gem located 780km northwest of Madagascar.

Renowned for its exclusivity and authenticity, it attracts nature enthusiasts. Highlights include snorkelling in crystal-clear waters amidst dolphins, sea turtles, and tropical fish; exploring spice gardens and ylang-ylang plantations; spotting rare species like the dugong and Livingstone’s fruit bat (or flying fox) and witnessing green turtles nesting on the beach.

If visitors manage to tear themselves away from the island’s worldclass beaches, Mohéli offers exhilarating hikes through stunning volcanic landscapes. Accessing this tropical paradise requires flying to Moroni, Comoros’ capital, followed by a domestic flight or ferry to Mohéli.

DID YOU KNOW: Mohéli is home to one of the largest marine protected areas spanning over 1 000km2.

DID YOU KNOW: Lamu is a car-free island.

Pemba Island

Looking to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life? Consider Pemba Island, just 56km from the port of Tanga, Tanzania.

Unlike Zanzibar, Pemba remains virtually untouched, boasting unspoiled natural beauty and attracting few tourists. This romantic destination offers 46 world-class scuba diving sites, stunning birdlife, rainforests to explore, and a Clove oil factory to visit.

Don't miss nearby Prison Island, once a prison for disobedient slaves, now a tourist attraction with historic buildings, giant tortoises, and powder-white beaches. Its Arabic name, "The Green", reflects its hilly landscape, fertile terrain, and lush vegetation. Experience unique accommodation at the Underwater Room resort, offering below-water lodging.

Lamu

Off the coast of northern Kenya, just 360km from Mombasa or a quick 10-minute water taxi from the mainland, lies Lamu.

Known for its spectacular coral reefs, this island embraces a laid-back and slower pace of life, attracting post-safari tourists seeking a bohemian experience. With transportation options limited to walking, donkeys, or old dhow boats, Lamu exudes charm and tranquillity.

Explore the narrow streets of one of East Africa's oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements, stroll along deserted beaches, sail in a traditional dhow, rent a beautiful Swahili townhouse, savour Swahili cuisine, visit the vegetable market for people watching, or explore the ruined city of Takwa.

DID YOU KNOW: 70% of the world’s cloves are grown in Pemba.

DID YOU KNOW: Mayotte’s nickname is “the island of death”. Due to the dangerous reefs encircling the island, ancient Arab sailors often found themselves shipwrecked upon its shores.

Réunion Island

This French paradise in Africa is nestled between Mauritius and Madagascar.

There are numerous reasons to visit Reunion including: its volcano is undisputably one of the most active on the planet; endless hilltop views; helicopter flights offering the best perspective of the island; countless waterfalls cascading into rock pools; and over 1 000km of hiking trails.

You also can’t miss tasting its decadently delicious rum or visiting the germanium distillery which produces the world’s best geranium essential oil. Have you ever explored tunnels carved out by lava flows? Not many places provide this opportunity, but Réunion Island does.

Mayotte

Located between South Africa and Madagascar, approximately 310km northwest of Madagascar, Mayotte is accessible by a direct nine-hour flight from Johannesburg.

Its greatest asset is its vast 1 400km lagoon enclosed by a double belt of coral, creating a sheltered natural aquarium ideal for diving and observing multi-coloured fish. The lagoon is also a prime spot for watching humpback whales.

Mayotte consists of two islands connected by a 1.9km causeway and is known for its volcanic mountains, reaching a peak of 610m.

The cuisine reflects a blend of French and Malagasy cultures, offering traditional French dishes with a tropical twist.

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore hiking trails and encounter native bird species like the drongo and Mayotte sunbird, as well as lemurs. Mayotte is a destination for beach holidays and adventurous travellers.

DID YOU KNOW: You’ll live a long and happy life in Réunion; the average life span here is an impressive at 83 years.
