Hiking, camping, fishing etc. is fantastic in spring –temperatures are moderate (not as hot as summer and not as cool as winter). Lucky for us we really don't need to veer too far to experience some of the best trails and panoramic scenery – check out the hiking tips article on page 30. Talking about hiking, I was rather surprised on a recent trip to the Cape West Coast (page 10) to see a vast number of cars in the Cederberg with mattresses on car roof rails. When I questioned this, I was told that people from all over the world head to the Cederberg for bouldering.

The weather is great, the scenery is alive and there is something exciting for everyone! Happy spring time!

It's also wildflower season in Western and Northern Cape, which is a hive of activity with amazing scenery and a host of festivities. In these areas travellers will enjoy a myriad of activities, from pure relaxation to hard core adrenaline.

For two people the prize includes: • Game drive at Garden Route Game Lodge (Albertinia) • Two-night weekend stay (inclusive of breakfast) at Voëlroepersfontein Gastehuis • Rum-tasting at Spasie Restaurant & Rum Distillery (Witsand) WIN To enter scan the QR code. In September we also celebrate Heritage Day. This is a great opportunity to reflect on South Africa’s history. While we celebrate our heritage, it is also a great time to spend with family and friends around a braai. From a getaway perspective, every province has tourism catering for history buffs that help transport guests back in time to a bygone era. An interesting read on page 68 gives some insight of our long history of gold and diamonds.

We are spoiled for choice in SA! While our winters don’t necessarily keep us indoors, spring practically screams for us to explore, discover and experience.

Tap water in most urban areas in SA is safe for consumption and to cook with.

Getting around SA can be simple or a hurdle – it depends on where you are. Bustling cities such as Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban have hop-on, hop-off bus services.

SA has both public and private hospital facilities, although there is a considerable price difference – the private sector will also require a payment upfront, so if you have insufficient cash, your insurance can assist. Travel insurance varies from person to person – some may opt for a comprehensive package, which will include things like insurance payouts for lost or stolen luggage.

TRAVEL TIPS

Travel insurance for a visit to South Africa is not mandatory for a short visit, however, it is recommended as it will most likely cover you for medical emergencies (check your insurance provider to confirm what is covered).

While walking about, visitors will note that street food gives off an aromatic smell. Street food is consumed by many locals and for the most part there is no problem, however, it is up to you to decide if the food stall meets your standards.

Google Maps has an offline feature whereby you can access maps without data. Prior to your trip, when you are in a Wi-Fi area, zoom into the map area and type “OK maps” into the search box. A pop-up should appear that reads, “download map”.

Getting from A to B

If you are travelling in more remote areas, it is advisable to rent a car or to use a tour operator to get around, as other transport platforms such as minibus taxis can be confusing to some.

Spring is the perfect time for a road trip to the Namaqua West Coast to witness the flower season. Drawing thousands of visitors every year between August and September, wildflowers cover the roadsides and natural landscapes. The diverse array of flowers found in this region is a result of the varied topography. You may also spot some flora species that are only found in this part of the world, like the yellow Leucospermum reflexum, the Snow Protea (protea cryophylla), blue Lachanaea filamentosa, yellow sparaxis, pink Cyanella alba and the Clanwilliam Cedar (widdringtonia cedarbergensis).

If you are strapped for time, arrangements can be made with the tour guide to visit less sites. The trail itself is an easy walk with the guide pointing out interesting flora and information about the area. Each rock art site is clearly marked for visitors to peruse – to maintain the dignity of the site, no touch or flash photography is allowed. While the tours can be undertaken without a guide, a guide regales visitors with interesting tales of the San who inhabited the area – including highlighting artefacts of tools such as bows, the types of paint used, etc.

There are also a host of activities to keep kids entertained when they join the Dream Xplorers club. The way it works is the more activities and adventures the kids partake in, the more badges they receive.

Piekenierskloof Resort offers a host of activities from miniature golf, hiking, ziplining to archery. It also has indoor and outdoor pools if you are looking for some time-out. The resort has hotel rooms and chalets – a great option for families and groups of friends. Uninterrupted views of the majestic Cederberg make for a great getaway.

Piekenierskloof feels like it’s all about nature and relaxation. For something quite novel, book an archery session. The handy guides provide instruction – it’s harder than it looks in that it requires a bit of arm strength. The archery, while done within the resort, is a bit far away from the accommodation, which is a good thing as sometimes hitting the target can be a challenge (for some).

A walk to remember The adventure starts with a mid-morning bush walk.

The terrain is very do-able for most fitness levels – there are no major climbs and for the most part it is relatively flat with a couple of short hills here and there.

Lion encounters: Alex Tour

Two experienced guides accompany guests, one in the lead and one bringing up the rear. As there are no large predatory animals roaming about, there is ample time to walk at a leisurely pace while the guides provide interesting titbits on the surrounding flora, fauna and geological formations that speak to a bygone era. Expect to Just a short 10-minute drive from Lanseria Airport in Johannesburg, the Lion and Safari Park which covers over 1 000 hectares, is a perfect quick sojourn in nature with a twist…

he Lion and Safari Park is well-known establishment for offering the opportunity to view animals up-close. And with its latest activities it has opened the field for an awesome nature experience.

encounter a variety of animals such as springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest and zebra on the walk. Experiencing a bush walk feels more exhilarating than a drive – it’s more personal and up-close.

There are several lion enclosures that guests can visit, either by self-drive or a guided tour. To learn more about these majestic big cats, a guided tour is recommended.

awaitsAdventureatthe Lion SafariandPark

The Lion and Safari Park is teeming with a variety of non-predatory wildlife including zebras, many type of antelope, and so much more! While driving around it is not unexpected for a giraffe to pop its head into the game driving vehicle for a quick greeting – a memorable experience for all ages.

A new offering are the horse trails. This is a joint venture between Ride Jozi and the park. Most of the horses at the stable can be considered ‘rescue’ horses – they have either been mistreated or given up, but luckily they now have a massive space to explore. When they are not at the stables the horses are given free reign to explore certain parts of the park to graze or take a dip in the nearby lake. The horses are well-cared for and riders with no prior experience should have no issues. First up is a quick lesson in how to handle a horse. For the most part the horses merely follow each other, and it is a gentle walk with amazing viewing opportunities – a novel way to experience the natural beauty of the surrounds.

The Alex Tour, named after Alex Larenty, who is an animal behaviourist, gets you possibly as close as you will ever get to a Whilelion. seated in a secure vehicle, Larenty jumps out and engages first-hand with the lions. It can be a bit nerve-wracking for guests as the lions trot towards him – being this close to lions makes you realise that they are much bigger in real life than on TV or on a safari game drive. Larenty’s interaction with the lions almost makes the lions seem friendly, but he highlights that this is because he works with them on every day, and they are used to him. That being said, he was careful not to turn his back on them.

SA’s journey of

Unpacking South Africa’s history of gold and diamonds, and how it helped shape the country to what it is today.

1800 1873 Gold: First largescale production began when alluvial deposits were discovered at Pilgrim’s Rest. 1867-1877 Annual world diamond production increases more than tenfold.1884 Gold was discovered in the Witwatersrand, which led to an influx of miners from around the world. 1887 Africa’s largest stock market, the JSE, was started specifically to fund the mining sector. 1898 Gold output soared to 118 tonnes making South Africa the world’s leading producer.

HISTORY gold & diamonds

1867 Diamonds are discovered in the Cape Colony – now the Northern Cape. The rock is later known as the 21.19ct Eureka diamond.

1899-1902 Anglo-Boer/South African War, brought about to some extent by the struggle for control of the goldfields, caused extreme disruptions in the mining industry, and at some stage, mines were closed. 1889 Chamber of Mines (now Minerals Council South Africa) founded.

Sun, sea, wildlife, indigenous magnificentflora, mountains and sprawling, developed cities – this is what makes South Africa an attractive tourist destination. While the rugged beauty of SA has always been around, the discovery of diamonds in 1869 and gold in 1886 changed the economy greatly. Investment from European countries started to flow in, and increased loan amounts were given to local farmers and miners. With various people from different countries all laying stake to the land, violence ensued for control over the land. There was increased trade between SA and the global market for gold, diamonds and an increasing need for agricultural products It’stoo.fair enough to say that mining helped develop and shape South Africa, but with the discovery of these precious minerals some aspects were positive and some negative.

1905 The Cullinan diamond is discovered at the Premier mine, later renamed the Cullinan mine. At 3,106.75ct, it is the largest rough diamond ever found.1910 Union of South Africa formed.

1921-1922 The Rand Rebellion saw white mine workers protest the industry’s attempt to replace semi-skilled white men with cheap black labour leaving about 200 people dead, more than 1 000 injured, 15 000 men out of work and a slump in gold production. The government came under pressure to protect skilled white workers in mining and three Acts were passed that gave employment opportunities to whites and introduced a plan for African segregation.

1928 First African diamond cutting factory opens in Kimberley. 1930s The Great Depression hit, but the gold industry avoided disaster. Employment grew and the industry boomed.

Embracing people, locals and sustainability at Gonana Guesthouse & Cottages

Gonana has a ring to it; it certainly rolls nicely off the tongue, don’t you think? However, Jonas Sandström put much thought into naming his latest endeavour, going further than just what “sounds good.” Gonana means ‘to embrace’ in isiZulu, and embracing nature, style, and the best of local talent has created Paternoster’s first sustainable guesthouse and self-catering cottages.

Living like west coast locals As one of South Africa’s oldest fishing towns, Paternoster is renowned for its friendly locals and close-knit community – and Gonana Guesthouse is certainly no exception to this village ‘trait’. The shared spaces in the Guesthouse encourage fireside chats, morning coffees with views over the Atlantic Ocean and relaxed living amongst guests. Breaking the fast and promoting slow, mindful living For those staying at the Guesthouse, breakfast is served around the driftwood communal dining table, which has a story of its own – as do most pieces here. This feature belonged to the previous owner and is the centre of new friendships and a place that brings people together – much as it did when the guesthouse was still a family home.

Gonana is home to feel-good stories and awe-inspiring views over the bay - and it’s all just two hours from Cape Town up the West Coast.

Gonana is a lifestyle. Live it! Get back to basics, reconnect, and share the “oohs” and “aahs” with fellow guests as you watch the whales frolic in the bay. Travel is not only about discovering new places, it’s about getting in touch with locals and exploring new ideas and traditions while reconnecting with yourself.

Here guests enjoy breakfasts that hero the local produce, along with fresh bread baked overnight. So, if you’re planning on sticking to your carb-free diet, you may want to embrace your curves. The delicious scents from the kitchen certainly do tantalise your tastebuds every morning.

Sandström has created a space that pays homage to his Swedish heritage and love for South Africa, incorporating sustainable design trends with African accents and, of course, the warmest of smiles from local women who have worked alongside Jonas for many years.

Embracing the today in sustainable design for a better tomorrow

For those who prefer their own take on breakfast and are staying at our self-catering Cottages, there is a fullyequipped kitchen with everything you may need, along with a covered balcony and braai area overlooking Bekbaai.

The Scandi-design for both the Guesthouse and Cottages allows for outside to flow in, with furniture lovingly crafted from upcycled local materials and wood sourced from alien trees. The aesthetics and restraint offer a relaxing space, proving that eco-conscious living and sustainability can feel luxurious. You’re not sacrificing on the experience; you’re enhancing it.

The recent addition of two self-catering cottages offers the perfect option for guests seeking total privacy. There is the two-bedroom, four-sleeper Acacia Cottage, and the one-bedroom three-sleeper Aloe Cottage. Both have fully equipped kitchens, a dining area, patios/balconies with sea views and braai facilities. Power is solar- generated, so as with the Guesthouse, the cottages are not affected by loadshedding. The cottages are pet-friendly – small to medium breeds of socialised/well-behaved dogs are welcome. There is Wi-Fi and night time security.

Boekenhoutskloof Cap Maritime Chardonnay

The age-old friendship between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is testimony of the affinity they have for one another, resulting in this aromatic wine with its salmon pink colour. Strawberry, candy floss and raspberry aromas are all attributed to Pinot Noir, while Chardonnay boosts notes of mango, pineapple and fruit salad. The palate is fruity and crisp with a zippy acidity, combining an array of flavours and sensations, leaving you with a fresh and lively aftertaste. Food pairing: Pair with sushi, prawn salad or fresh oysters for a most memorable experience.

Food pairing: Char-grilled salmon with red pepper béarnaise, coal-fired salsa, cabbage and caper potato with green olive tapenade. Butter-poached West Coast crayfish. Pork belly, grilled celeriac, celeriac purée and pickled apple.

Flavours of ripe mandarin and hints of lemon curd and white blossom follow through onto an elegant, poised palate. The mid-palate is very focused, smooth and buttery, with good weight yet enough tension. The wine has a subtle, smoky, refreshing finish with delicate nuances of lemongrass and verbena lingering in the mouth.

Food pairing: Well paired with zesty lemon fresh fish, snoek, thai green curry or chicken kebabs, tempura prawns, and pasta dishes. - November 2022 • rovesa.co.za

The fruit follows through beautifully to the palate, with a hint of orange pith adding interest at the back of the palate. The wine is wonderfully weighted and textured, but Saxenburg’s typical minerality ensures balance and freshness.

This beautiful Chardonnay with aromas of fresh citrus and mineral notes with some light toasted brioche in the background. Tangerine fruit and citrus blossom fragrances are apparent, with hints of vanilla pod and almond flakes. These characteristics follow through onto the palate. The fine, fresh acidity is natural, and adds poise and focus to the wine. Food pairing: Fish, poultry, pork, and game bird dishes work well with this wine. It pairs particularly well with creamy pastas and salmon dishes. The fresh acidity and great balance between fruit and well balanced oaking keeps the wine from being overly rich and consequently, great without food too. Mussel soup is a perfect match.

Five Lives Red Blend 2019

A wine of substance – generously structured for the long haul. Immediately expressive succulent plum, clove and nutmeg. Well defined and concentrated black olive tapenade and cranberry tart flavours, all elegantly packaged around an ever-present kelp-like tannin. Velvety smooth finish. Food pairing: Slow braised pork belly, Emmental & potato gratin with heirloom carrot. Or try the traditional pairing of smoked duck breast and black berry jus. Seared fresh tuna also combines delightfully with this wine.

The wine expresses an intense dark red hue with a lighter, garnet red on the rim. The nose displays prominently with blackcurrant cassis and notes of earth, basil and plum. It is a medium to full-bodied wine, showing a silky texture and depth, as well as an elegant tannin structure. Savoury sundried tomato pesto, tobacco spice, cherry and cinnamon notes linger on the palate long after the last sip. Food pairing: We would suggest pairing it with the Pulled Pork Gnocchi: pumpkin gnocchi, red pepper & heirloom tomato ragout, pumpkin seeds and smoke gruberg.

This wine has a lovely luminosity, the colour is bright crimson. The nose has delicate earthy aromas combined with red and dark berries. On the palate, these characteristics follow through, combining with interesting savoury notes and just a touch of oak for a long lingering finish. Food pairing: The natural acidity makes it a perfect partner for a diversity of dishes. Game fish, game birds and venison work very well, as do grilled beef and strong, hard cheese. Vegan friendly.

FOOD

Every household tends to have their own variation of the menu according to their tastes. When to braai? Whenever the mood strikes! A favourite day for a lot of South Africans is on Heritage Day (24 September). Braai etiquette The host will invite the guests. As a guest, it is polite to bring a side dish, or your host will usually tell you what to bring. Braai essentials Food, fire, awesome people and conversation, and drinks!

Let’s braai! Fancy a ‘tjop en dop’ (chop & a drink)

The word ‘braai’ is said to originate from the Dutch word ‘braden’ meaning ‘roast’. A braai is when meat is cooked over charcoal or wood. The main difference between a braai and a barbeque is the fuel that is used to make the fire – a barbecue generally uses gas or electricity. On the menu While the meat is on the braai, everyone usually enjoys some snacks, which include biltong (dried meat similar to jerky but more flavourful and a different texture, or droewors (dried sausage), chips and nuts. The meat can be boerewors, lamb chops, T-bone steaks, chicken ‘flatties’ (spatchcock), snoek, kabeljou (cob) or sosaties (kebabs).

4. Place the buttered side of the bread on the grill.

Every South African embraces the braai experience – it’s a feast of food and lots of laughs shared with family and friends around a fire.

Carbohydrates are usually served with the meat, including braaibrootjies (braai sandwiches), pap (traditional African maize), chakalaka (a mixture of tomato, onion and chili), potato salad and much more.

5. Grill over the hot coals until bread is toasted and cheese is melted.

What is a braai?

You can drink whatever you wish at a braai, but favourites generally include brandy and Coke, beer, ciders and wine.

Drive sensibly Aggressive acceleration and braking can increase your fuel consumption by up to 30%. What you want to do is accelerate gently, then once you’re at the speed limit, maintain the posted limit while scanning the road ahead. If you do spot a traffic issue up ahead, lift off the throttle earlier to reduce speed gradually, rather than diving on the brakes at the last minute only to accelerate hard again to reach the desired speed.

This is an obvious one, but one that can be hard for 4×4 owners to sidestep. With extra off-road equipment, driving lights, a UHF antenna, roof racks and an extra spare tyre, the weight begins to add up. It can be tempting to keep everything in your vehicle, ready for your next adventure, but you’ll pay a premium to do so.

If you regularly carry gear on your roof racks while off-roading, remember to remove it when you get back home. Leaving a roof pod, roof cage or rooftop tent bolted on top of your 4×4 when you don’t need it creates unnecessary aerodynamic drag (or wind resistance).

Take bulky stuff off the roof

Similarly, when you are heading out into the countryside, think about what you’ll actually need and only take essentials.

drivingfuelcautiouscosts!

DRIVING

A fuel-saving mindset and driving style can make a big difference at the pumps, and to your pocket.

If your vehicle has a real-time fuel economy reading you can use it to get an idea of how much fuel you’re using at different speeds, which will help you find your vehicle’s sweet spot. This could equate to being in top gear at the lowest possible revs. Driving at 80km/h in a 100km/h zone might get you great economy but it will also frustrate your Safe and will save on

One handy hint when you’re driving on the highway is to make use of cruise control as this will help maintain the posted speed limit without sudden fuel-sucking fluctuations in speed; just remember to deactivate the cruise control when there are hazardous driving conditions.

Reducing the weight of your vehicle by as little as 50kg could result in a fuel economy improvement of between 1-2%. So, if you’re not planning to go anywhere anytime soon, remove the unnecessary gear from your vehicle and save some money for your next trip.

By Adv. Johan Jonck, Arrive Alive

It’s simple, the faster you go, the more fuel you’ll use. Up to around 80km/h, the energy required to overcome wind resistance on a vehicle is minimal. But push beyond that and drag increases exponentially.

Similarly, drive with tyre pressures too low and you’ll increase the rolling resistance which means your vehicle will be working harder to travel at the same speed.

Talking tyres Ensure your vehicle’s tyres are inflated as per the manufacturer’s recommendation (usually located on a sticker on the door sill, or in the owner’s manual). The importance of properly inflated tyres goes beyond just reducing rolling resistance and improving fuel efficiency: it’s also about vehicle safety. Over-inflate your tyres and you risk reduced grip and increased wear.

Hot weather tips

Hotter weather helps your vehicle’s engine reach its optimum operating temperature much faster. But switching on the air-conditioning can place strain on the engine, which will see an increase in fuel consumption. On shorter trips in hot weather, therunningair-con can increase fuel consumption by up to 25%. In warmer climates, comfort is usually more important than cost – but it’s worth remembering that a cool interior doesn’t come without a price.

fellow motorists. So, be aware the harder your vehicle has to work, the more fuel you’ll use.

How many times have you run to the shops or the local hardware store, got back home and then realised you need to go back because you forgot something? All of those little trips will see you use more fuel than a longer drive at a consistent speed. So, make a list of all the things you need to get and tick them off as you go.

Additionally, have the wheel alignment on your vehicle checked. If the alignment is out, the engine will be working harder and thus using more fuel, not to mention you’ll be reducing the life of your tyres, and adversely affect your vehicle’s handling.

Service is serious

To give your vehicle’s engine a helping hand, on hot days consider lowering the windows if you’re travelling at lower speeds and leave the A/C switched off.

Make sure you keep your vehicle regularly serviced. During each service, your dealership will run your vehicle through a barrage of checks, picking up on things like faulty sensors that can lead to increased fuel use. For instance, fixing a faulty oxygen sensor could improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency by around 40%. Similarly, using the wrong engine oil in your vehicle can affect fuel consumption by up to 2%.

Time to tow Fuel consumption increases when towing, so the main thing you need to do to maximise fuel consumption is to watch your speed. And by that, we mean keeping your speed down because as you increase speed, wind resistance on your vehicle and your towed load increase, which means your vehicle’s engine has to work harder to maintain the posted speed limit. Driving 10-15km/h under the speed limit (on the highway) won’t see you holding up traffic, but it should see you saving fuel.

Delta Park Here you have approximately 104 hectares of grassland and woodland to explore, as well as a variety of plants. Of interest is the sensory trail and the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary. For a serene, picturesque spot for a picnic, try out the southeast corner.

“It often turns into a search for a buoy, because the whales swim on, so some of the operations take hours because you have to find the whale before you can free it.”

“I have been in the ocean since a very young age, and I have been a diver since the age of nine,” says CEO of the NSRI, Dr Cleeve Robertson.

In addition to whales, many other finned and featured creatures get assistance from the NSRI. This includes penguins, dolphins, and the tiniest of victims, turtle

All creatures, great and small The nature of the NSRI’s work means that the ocean is like an extension of their base of operations, so it’s only natural that the volunteers feel very connected to protecting it. They are The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) conservation efforts are much like the ocean herself – there’s a lot going on that you might not see!

“We’re actively involved with whale disentanglement operations and have a long history of working with the South African Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN). Those operations are very significant and very dangerous. There are cutting sets all along the coast and crews respond at the touch of a button,” Robertson says.

keenly aware of changes to shorelines and often encounter stranded animals on beaches.

“We’rehatchlings.coming to the end of turtle season, so a lot of hatchlings wash up on the beach. We collect the hatchlings The ocean and all of the sea creatures it houses are constantly being threatened by man-made evils like pollution and climate change.

“I remember swimming in rock pools as a child and unconsciously making observations. When I went to university and had to do a Zoology project, I did it in that intertidal zone.

“People don’t realise how substantially that environment has changed. That’s often one of the biggest obstructions to conservation. If it’s underground or underwater and not visible, then the same energy isn’t applied to conserving it,” he says.

The other part of the NSRI’s work is advocacy in relation to the ocean.

• Do not approach or try and touch it.

• Do not throw water over it.

• Keep dogs away from the seal.

A voice for change

CONSERVATION and arrange transport for them to the Two Oceans Aquarium. I was there the other day and I think they’ve currently got about 100 turtles on the roof in little tanks.

The NSRI is also trying to ‘green’ their operations as much as possible. They have implemented solar panelling where possible and all of the stations have water tanks. In addition to this, there’s also been a move towards more fuel-efficient crafts. Many of the boats using 2-stroke motors have been changed to those using 4-stroke motors, which are much cleaner and burn less fuel.

If you find a seabird in distress on a beach:

• Be mindful of its beak, it may try to defend itself.

• Place in a large box with good ventilation.

Robertson says. If you find a turtle in distress on a beach:

• Do not chase it back into the water.

• Call SANCCOB on 021 557 6155 / 078 638 3731 (after hours)

“That is partly as a result of our activism. That kind of marine advocacy is a part of our work, as the health of the ocean is an ongoing issue. Climate change is allied to that. We experience the direct impacts of climate change because of the extreme weather conditions it creates. The flooding in KwaZulu-Natal was an example of this,” says Robertson. It’s not easy being green

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is the charity organisation that saves lives on South African waters – both coastal and inland. Their goal is to prevent drowning through rescue operations, education, and prevention initiatives.

“Obviously as you improve technology, your footprint decreases. We’re also looking at hydrogen and electrical technology to replace the diesel vessels. Hydrogen is obviously a much cleaner solution. When you plan new technology, you have to think ahead about the consequences of what you do,”

• Do not remove any barnacles from its shell.

• If it’s a large turtle, remain close and call the number below.

• Call the SPCA on 021 700 4158/9 / 083 326 1604 (after hours)

“We’ve been quite active in Cape Town in voicing our opinions on marine pollution from sewage outfalls, particularly along the Atlantic coast,” he says. “There are four or five outfalls, and there is evidence that they are actually changing the ecosystem because of chemical pollution from things like antibiotics, antiinflammatories and hormones.”

“When they’ve all been rehabilitated, they will be taken about 70km away from Cape Point where the water is warm and released. Every now and then we come across an adult turtle on a beach that is hurt or sick with pneumonia, which we’ll also take back to the aquarium,” Robertson adds.

Operating from base stations along the SA coastline, and on inland dams, their rescue volunteers are on call, at all hours, every day of the year. The rescue crew receives no payment and neither do they charge the people they rescue.

Robertson is passionate about protecting our waters from sewage pollution.

At the moment, there’s an ongoing investigation by the City of Cape Town into sewage outfalls. Hopefully, this will result in proposals being put forward and a solution being found.

• Do not return the turtle to the sea.

The NSRI visit schools around the country, teaching children about water safety. Their drowning prevention measures include their online training academy, with free courses for crew and the public, emergency signage, Pink Rescue Buoys for emergency flotation, rescue swimmers, lifeguards, and active patrols during peak seasons. The NSRI is totally reliant on donations and sponsorships. This enables them to do the work of saving lives, changing lives, and creating futures.
