Abstract artist Brendan Parker is going where his art takes him BY ZANDRA WOLFGRAM // PHOTOS BY MICHAEL BOOINI
L
ike his abstract artwork, mixedmedia artist Brendan Parker doesn’t premeditate his every move. Instead, much like the unpredictable epoxy resin he slowly drizzles layer upon layer, this unassuming 34-year-old Miramar Beach artist prefers to go where the art takes him. Luckily for the Northwest Florida Gulf coast art scene, it has led him here to Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, and, if his commission sales are any indication, Brendan Parker Art is here to stay. Like his creative process, Parker’s connection to Sandestin happened organically. “I’ve been visiting Sandestin since before I could walk or talk. Some of my earliest and happiest memories are vacationing at Sandestin with my Aunt Brenda and the rest of my family,” the native from Dalton, Georgia, says. His mother, an experienced luxury realtor, has long had ties to Sandestin. His sister is close by in Pensacola. When pursuit of a career in architecture didn’t pan out, the then-19-year-old Parker decided to make

the move to Sandestin a permanent one. For the past 15 years, he has lived in various neighborhoods around the resort. Currently, he and his German shepherd Sugarbear call The Grand Sandestin home. His daughters, 8-year-old Aurora and 7-year-old Fiona, especially love their Village of Baytowne Wharf adventures when they venture from Foley, Alabama. For the past year, Parker, who specializes in custom commissions, has operated out of a work space/studio converted from office buildings on the outskirts of the resort. “This is my ideal setup: living and working on property and creating artwork to complement and add to the natural beauty of this place and the homes here on the resort. I feel like I’m making my home a more beautiful place to live and visit,” he says. However, the way it happened wasn’t ideal. A lifelong lover of music, Parker — tall, blueeyed and ginger-haired — began teaching himself to play the guitar when he was 7. Throughout his teenage years, his electric guitar did a lot of talking for him. But the day before his 21st birthday, another unexpected

“ I never really know how it’s going to turn out or how many layers it will take until it finally just happens and it’s finished … that’s what keeps it interesting for me.” — Brendan Parker life event again changed his creative course. While working as a restaurant cook, he badly burned his hand. Not able to vent or express himself musically while his injury healed, Parker took up painting … and never stopped. “I actually had stage fright, when it came to playing music in front of people, that’s why the canvas is so great for me, because I can still share my gift without having to worry about the performance in the moment,” he says. His initial paintings were a great way for this self-taught artist to experiment and explore various mediums and styles. Now, Parker primarily works with epoxy resins, creating original, 12

abstract paintings that are “one-of-akind, dynamic and expressive.” “I love trial and error,” Parker admits. “I love resin because it is such a versatile substance. Because of its viscosity and transparency, it allows me to combine many other mediums together. I can mix almost anything with it to get a wide range of effects. Its transparency allows me to layer in depth and dimension without losing sight of layers below. I use it as a vessel for all other mediums. “For me, painting is an outlet that allows me to turn off my mind and get lost in the flow. It is a form of meditation, allowing me to release and let go of things I am holding on to.”
Clearly, the Gulf Coast area is a muse. “I definitely work with coastal palettes that complement the aesthetics of the properties here along our coast as well as other coastal regions,” he explains. A great example of Parker’s coastalinspired work is found in the resort’s newly opened Hotel Effie. Parker was commissioned to create custom artwork for all 250 guest rooms, two large lobby entryway pieces, an original for the Presidential suite and a large triptych for the hotel’s conference center that hangs behind the bar. Though each piece is different, together it forms a light, airy coastal collection that well suits the contemporary hotel.
INSIDE THE ARTIST’S PROCESS “I DO NOT PREMEDITATE the end product. I first determine what size canvas I am going to build. When the canvas is finished and prepped, I start only with a color palette in mind. “The resin is not a medium that can be controlled very easily. It requires patience and an ability to surrender to its fluidity. I have to remind myself to let go while working and not get too caught up in the results of each layer. “There are many layers on each piece. This adds lots of dimension, depth and complexity. “Through layering, I can manipulate the result to an extent, but I never really know how it’s going to turn out or how many layers it will take until it finally just happens and it’s finished … that’s what keeps it interesting for me.”

“I love trial and error ... that’s why the canvas is so great for me, because I can still share my gift without having to worry about the performance in the moment.” — Brendan Parker “This is my first hotel project, and I’m super excited about it,” he says. “I hope to do a few more in the next few years.” Parker’s work is carried by the Fusion Art Glass gallery location in Seaside. It’s also available through a myriad of local interior design vendors, including Sugar Beach Interiors in Miramar Beach, Beau Interiors on 30A and Duce & Company in Destin, among others. On his website, BrendanParkerArt.com, his artwork ranges from a cloudlike 18-by-18-inch piece called “Stone” for $793 to a bold 54-by-90-inch piece entitled “Inner Shaman” for $25,000. Though the pandemic continues to be a “wild card” for many, working alone in his studio meant Parker didn’t feel much of a difference from his day-to-day routine. Professionally, the real estate sales boom and pent-up demand for renovating vacation rental homes has made it a banner year for Parker and the interior design firms he works with along the Gulf coast. 14

Parker relishes his “forte” of creating commissions. “A lot of artists do not like to do custom work, they feel it boxes them in. I absolutely don’t get boxed in. I do the opposite. I gain inspiration from blank walls. I like tying a space together with my artwork and pulling color palettes from the surrounding area.” Circulation. Brainstorm. Siren. Enchanter. The mostly one-word titles of Parker’s artwork are as straight forward yet ethereal as the artwork itself. Each piece exudes movement, or in Parker’s case, perhaps slow motion. Like slicing into a precious stone, many of the paintings appear to offer a glimpse into layers of time and space. Though Parker takes great care to aptly name each piece, what the viewer feels is left up to them. “I keep my work very broad. I try not to narrow it down. A lot of my buyers say every day they see and feel something different depending on what’s going on. So, it’s kind of in flux. In that way, it’s more of a mirror for them.” For each and every piece of art, Parker’s intention is always the same. “I hope it elevates their day. That’s my goal. I want it to be a feelgood thing,” he says. Kari Barlow contributed to this story.
BRENDAN Parker's coastalinspired artwork can be found adorning the walls of the resort's newly opened Hotel Effie.
DO YOU HAVE A BLANK WALL FOR BRENDAN PARKER TO BEAUTIFY? Here’s what you can expect …
“If there's a blank wall that needs work, just set up a consultation. During a consultation, I meet the client, see their place, figure out what they're about, look at the wall, hear their ideas and then I come back with a proposal. “I stay very hands-on with the project. For example, I build all my own canvases. If I see a wall and think a triptych would it look great or a long panoramic piece, I’ll build the canvases for both of those scenarios, hang blank ones on the wall so the client can see it before we move forward. I usually create Option A and Option B, and slowly progress through the project from there.” SANDESTIN.COM

s residents of St. Charles, Missouri, the Powers family live far away from the white sands and jewel-toned waters of the Emerald Coast. But when they visited Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort on a business trip in 2005, all four fell in love with the beautiful scenery and all that the area had to offer. Even in their travels around the world, they’ve never seen anything that compares; and so was born a family tradition of vacationing in Sandestin.

Along with their two boys, Nolan (age 18) and Colin (11), the family has bought a vacation home in the Sandestin neighborhood of Genoa, where they visit three to five times per year — though working remote has allowed the frequency of their visits to increase. More than 15 years later, the Powers family has come to be pros at making the most of their time in Sandestin … and they’re giving us a peek at all the fun.

LIGHTING UP THE NIGHT Annual Holiday Wine Festival raises spirits — and glasses STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT // PHOTOS BY THE GOOD LIFE DESTIN

EVENT
O
ver the past eight years, the Sparkling Wine and Holiday Lights festival has ushered in the Christmas season at The Village of Baytowne Wharf — and this year was no exception. Sponsored by the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort and the Sandestin Wine Festival, the event took place Nov. 14, 2020, on the festively decorated streets of Baytowne. Featuring more than 30 champagnes as well as delicious appetizers from featured Village restaurants, the event ended with the first tree lighting of the season and 12 Nights of Lights, Baytowne Wharf’s choreographed light show. “We love to kick off the holiday season with this sparkling event,” says Leighann Elliott, Events Manager at The Village of Baytowne Wharf. “This event truly gets you in the holiday spirit while exploring the beautiful village streets with your friends and families and sampling delicious appetizers and an incredible variety of champagne. Guests also received a commemorative sparkling wine champagne glass. We love watching our guests toast under the tree with a flute of fizzy champagne.” With participants that included Marlin Grill, Rum Runners, Slick Lips Seafood & Oyster House, Hartell’s Village dinner, Seaside Sweetiers, Poppy’s Crazy Lobster, Hammerhead’s Bar & Grille, Roberto’s and the
LOCAL RESTAURANTS helped complement the sparkling beverages with locally made appetizers.

This is one of the most popular holiday events on the Emerald Coast, and it sells out ahead of the event day, year after year. We tend to think of our Sparkling Wine event as the grown-up sneak peek of our holiday festivities inside the Village.” — Leighann Elliott

HUNDREDS of attendees came out to the festival, which supports the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center.
Local Life Café, the event perfectly showcased all the delicious restaurants of Baytowne and the fantastic fare that has made them so popular. While noshing on appetizers and sipping their way through the more than 30 premium champagnes and sparkling wines, guests were treated to the sound of Christmas carolers from Emerald Coast Theater Company. “The evening feels like a night straight out of a Hallmark holiday movie,” notes Elliott, who feels that Baytowne’s quaint village atmosphere is an ideal setting for the event. While the festival is certainly a popular one, it’s always good to add something new to attract more interest, and this year brought new champagnes and sparkling wines to the party. Featuring a wide selection of champagnes, French sparkling wines, domestic sparkling wines, proseccos, cavas, and rosés, the Sparkling Wines and Holiday Lights was every bit as effervescent as one would imagine — and every bit as cheerful. Adding to all that holiday cheer, the event benefits the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center, which helps prevent the abuse and neglect of local children, provide protection, and restore the lives and futures of children impacted by such wrongs. This year’s sold out event allowed the donation of $2,000 to the ECCAC mission.
“The ECCAC are a tremendous help in getting this event off the ground, and it is fun to watch the volunteers enjoy themselves while pouring and serving,” says Elliott. “This is one of the most popular holiday events on the Emerald Coast, and it sells out ahead of the event day, year after year. We tend to think of our Sparkling Wine event as the grown-up sneak peek of our holiday festivities inside the Village.” With 500 attendees at the event, it’s clearly a popular way to start the holidays — and that didn’t change in the midst of a challenging 2020. “We knew that it was important to continue on with the event this year because it was a way to remind everyone to take a moment to remember the simple joys in life and fall in love with the holidays again and all the joy that they bring! It was wonderful to see everyone smiling and truly enjoying themselves and kicking off the holiday season together,” Elliott says. “It’s a hopeful start to getting things back to normal, and we’re excited that the 2021 events calendar is filling up. We’re doing everything we can to keep the Village a clean and safe environment for all those who visit.” Of course, no Christmas festival would be complete without a Christmas tree, and the evening closed in the best way possible with a tree lighting. The first of the season, the moment the lights came on was a magical one, one that served as a reminder that — even in trying times — there are things to treasure and be thankful for. As the Christmas lights came alive to the sound of carols and festive songs, the bubbles of champagne toasts and sparkling wines were followed by an overflowing of excitement for a season filled with wonder and joy. SPOTLIGHT
GET TO KNOW
BRIAN LAMONICA Director of Catering and Conference Services
1. How long have you worked for Sandestin and what brought you here? I’ve been with Sandestin for 12 years now. It’s hard to believe it has been that long — it doesn’t feel that way. My family moved into the area back in ’92, so I’ve been a local for quite some time. After leaving the area for a few years, I realized the paradise that I left behind in South Walton and was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to come back to the area and work for Sandestin.
2. When you are not working, what is your favorite thing to do? Spending time with my family. I have an amazing wife and daughter that spoil me rotten. My family, after seeing and experiencing Sandestin, moved into the area and now live at Sandestin. It’s great to have family here with so much to do both indoors and outdoors. I also enjoy the occasional DIY home-improvement project. It’s great getting to learn a new skill and creating something that you can be proud of.
3. During your time with Sandestin, is there a particular moment that stands out for you? Not so much a particular moment as 2020 as a whole. I believe that Sandestin took full advantage of the opportunity that COVID-19 presented. We challenged our banquet operations by reviewing our entire rulebook: standard procedures, cleanliness practices, as well as Food and Beverage presentations. Through this exercise, our banquet team has been hosting safe meetings since re-opening our conference centers in May of 2020. Our new standards have 38
SPRING 2021
SANDESTIN LIVING
been greeted with a tremendous amount of positive feedback and praise from our conference and event guests — so much so that our blueprint for safe meetings has been shared with other venues as a benchmark. I’m looking forward to continuing our successes in 2021 and inviting groups to see Hotel Effie and the 20,000 square feet of new meeting space as well as experience the wonderful, new look of the Baytowne Conference Center. With 85,000 square feet of meeting space, we’re fortunate to have the ability to host large events while ensuring safe practices and social distancing.
4. If there was one thing that you wish everyone knew about Sandestin, what would it be? This place is special! The resort has become such an amazing destination for locals that call this place home and those guests that visit us seasonally. With signature events like the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic Fishing Tournament and The Village of Baytowne Wharf’s Annual Wine Festival, among other great events, there is always something to look forward to. And the best part — all of our guests can enjoy their Sandestin vacations and know they are giving back to the community with every reservation through the Sandestin Foundation for Kids.
5. Can you share a memorable experience where you or one of your team members went above and beyond to ensure guest satisfaction? No bride wants to see rain on their wedding day, let alone a hurricane. That
was the case in 2020 when dealing with the rains from Hurricane Sally. As the storm clouds broke away, my phone began ringing as my Wedding Manager was preparing to put on a bride’s dream wedding ceremony that very afternoon. With logistical challenges galore, the experience and passion of Sandestin’s Wedding team prevailed, and our guests enjoyed an amazing wedding that same day. Servicing over 50 weddings a year, brides and grooms find themselves in good hands with our team.
6. What do you think is the MOST amazing stat for Conference Services/ Banquets? I have to give credit to our amazing Culinary, Audio Visual and Banquet teams that put on spectacular events. Year after year, these teams continue to push for industry-high satisfaction scores. Looking back at our most recent year of surveys, our teams finished with the following satisfaction scores: ◆ Audio Visual: 98.7% Satisfaction ◆ Banquet Managers: 97.2% Satisfaction ◆ Staff Responsiveness: 97.7% Satisfaction ◆ Meal Service: 97.1% Satisfaction ◆ Meeting Facilities: 96.6% Satisfaction ◆ Catering and Conference Services: 96.9% Satisfaction The service our teams provide our groups is truly remarkable. I’m blessed to work with so many talented individuals that put the guest experience first and continuously find new ways to raise the bar.

2020 MARKET REVIEW SANDESTIN
REAL ESTATE MARKET UPDATE BROKER’S NOTE
E
xpect the unexpected” … that should have been the tagline for the year 2020. This past year has been one of mastering a whole new way of selling real estate; and master it, we have! We found a way to show a home without ever walking into it, execute contracts without touching a pen, and transfer ownership of real estate without stepping foot into an office. While our customary “drive to” market of purchasers stayed red-hot, we gained strong sales from new markets in the northernmost states of the U.S. as buyers left densely populated metros to work at home in paradise. Interest rates hit record lows in December of 2020, averaging about 2.67% on a conventional 30-year fixed, which opened up our market even further. Inventory within Sandestin is at its lowest since 1999 — dropping below 200 available properties on more than one occasion. That’s out of nearly 5,000 residential homes and homesites within our gates. Competitively priced properties are frequently under contract within 24 hours of being listed on the market, and Sellers are more commonly receiving multiple offers and offers above asking price. Buyers are finding ingenious ways to make their offer stand out as they are “outbid” on multiple properties. Now, in 2021, Fannie Mae has instituted new Project Standards which greatly restrict lending on condominiums within our area. With the ever-growing influx of out-of-area purchasers, it
is increasingly more important that real estate professionals are knowledgeable in the product they are selling, as well as the contractual processes and the obligations of buyers seeking to obtain conventional financing. SRE has ongoing education for its team of experienced Realtors to ensure our clients and customers are represented with the expertise required by today’s demanding market. No other brokerage offers an on-location team with up-to-date knowledge of all aspects of Sandestin, beyond just the real estate market, and an exclusive access to the myriad departments that make up the operations of Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Whether a buyer or seller, make sure you are choosing the professional that will fully represent you in your real estate endeavors along the Emerald Coast.

Even with such a strong increase in original list price (just over 18% increase from 2019 to 2020), the final average percentage of list to sale price was 93.1%, meaning that the difference between the original list price and the final sales price was only 6.9%. 2020’s sales momentum has carried on into the first months of 2021 but, without an influx of inventory, is destined to slow drastically. The last time the number of properties available on the resort dipped below 200 was back in 1999 … before many of our neighborhoods, including The Village of Baytowne Wharf, had even been developed.

2020 MARKET REVIEW DESTIN • SANDESTIN® • SOUTH WALTON • 30A WEST TO DESTIN
SANDESTIN®
EAST TO HWY 30A
The city of Destin, the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” has a rich historical heritage. Captain Destin pioneered the fishing industry in the 1800s. Today, developed in consideration of supporting tourism, Destin’s beachfront accommodations include Emerald Towers, Holiday Isle, Jade East, Pelican Beach and Silver Shells, among many others. Emerald Bay, Kelly Plantation, Regatta Bay and Indian Bayou are among communities designed to enhance the residential lifestyle of its homeowners by surrounding beautiful homes with award-winning golf courses, lake views and bayfront luxury.
Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, where so many come to play and stay for life, is a major destination for all seasons and all ages. With over 2,000 acres, Sandestin is comprised of over 70 unique neighborhoods of condominiums, villas, townhomes and estates being enjoyed as permanent residences and vacation homes. The resort features miles of pristine beach and bay frontage, four championship golf courses, 15 world-class tennis courts, 4 resort swimming pools (and 15 private neighborhood pools), a 113-slip marina, fitness center and spa, and The Village of Baytowne Wharf, a charming pedestrian village with events, shopping, dining, family entertainment and nightlife.
These unique beach communities are not “official” cities, but they are very distinct and each touts a personality and atmosphere of its own: Seascape, Sandestin®, Miramar Beach, Dune Allen, Gulf Place, Santa Rosa Beach, Blue Mountain, Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Seaside, Seagrove, WaterSound, Seacrest, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach and Inlet Beach. South Walton’s claim to fame is individuality. This expansive stretch of white sand and emerald waters is lined with cottages, condos and homes of all styles.

SANDESTIN LIVING
BEACH TO BAY 2020 MARKET REVIEW
DESTIN • SANDESTIN • SOUTH WALTON • 30A The market in Sandestin is reflective of the conditions from Destin to Point Washington (and beyond). Overall inventory is down for every market area and median sales price is up with the exception of vacant land. This year’s 7% increase in overall median sales price comes after a 5% increase from 2018 to 2019. The percent to list is up in every property type with the exception of vacant land, indicating that sellers are asking for more, and getting that amount, for developed property throughout our area.
