On the Cover
Our cover couple, Claire and Jake Partin, had the epitome of a beach wedding on the sugar-white shore of Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa. As beach lovers, the Louisiana couple knew their nuptials had to occur on the beach, becoming both a celebration and a vacation for themselves and guests. The couple exchanged vows on the deck and then headed beachside for romantic sunset photos captured by the talented Robert Young of Forever Young Images, whose keen eye snapped our stunning cover image. To read more of their story, go to page 22.

My Most Cherished Day
When I think of this day, those memories come to me most urgently, most joyfully. In the highlight reel of my life, our wedding is on repeat. I have spoken with countless couples over the years, and I resented the answer, “best day ever.” I thought it lacked creativity. Surely it couldn’t have been that special, that perfect, that untouched. As someone now married, I understand. It is the best day — but it’s even more than that. For someone paid to find the right words, I have decided that a wedding day is the most cherished day. As a romantic, balanced and humbled by her realism, I will be honest: I had knots in my stomach as the wedding countdown entered the final 24 hours. For any couple planning a wedding in 2020 — amid all the postponements, cancellations, downsizing and alterations — I can speak for us: The process was the opposite of “the best.” I put off writing this letter for months. Even in the brightness of our wedding day, I felt weighed down by the experiences of the past year. I feel a deep sense of empathy for those who had weddings, family members and friends impacted by the pandemic. As much as a global pandemic shocked me into stagnancy, it also awoke in me the resilience of humans, our need for connection, and how we continue to relentlessly pursue kindness and love even in our most detrimental days. I believe that we band around one another to guard the sacredness of a wedding day. So much of the world is tinged with impurities, but marriage is one of the few divine acts we have left. We are able to have the “best day” because we believe wholeheartedly in it. I have been the editor of this magazine for five years now. I have been in a relationship with my now husband for all five of those years. This warmth fills me when I think about how I’ve shared this journey with readers. I look back at the first editor’s letter I wrote, Zan and I had just started dating, but it was always going to be him.

Lipstick smudges on champagne glasses and the laughter of the women who have most influenced and impacted my life as I got ready. My husband’s tears staining the letters we shared with each other during our first look. My husband wheeling my mother-in-law’s wheelchair onto the dance floor. Sparklers illuminating the faces of the community of family and friends that encompassed us in their love.
Now, I have a husband. The solidity of our relationship and unwavering love we share has made me feel married to him for years. Then I see his ring, and electricity zips through me. I think about the sublime and spiritual exchanging of our vows. I reflect on the statement in support of unity that we have made through our marriage. To all vendors, venues and wedding service providers, I now, more than ever, appreciate the dedication and commitment you have to giving couples their most memorable day. It has been a tumultuous year for the wedding industry; even still, you keep showing up, creating and giving all in the name of love. To my own vendors, most of which are throughout these pages, I will be thanking you endlessly. Readers, I hope you find nothing but joy, comfort, inclusion, unity and beauty within these pages. As we come into each day with enlightened perspectives, I hope you are even more in love with this world and with each other. All my best,
Rebecca Padgett Frett, Editor *I dedicate this issue to Adeline Bruenning. I know you would have read it cover to cover.

Wedded Bliss PLANNING TIPS By Rebecca Padgett Frett
As someone married within the past year, in Northwest Florida at that, I feel I’m in the unique position to offer some insight on what is important to remember when planning a wedding. Each wedding and each experience is unique, but these are my takeaways, the advice I want to give readers in hopes that they, too, will experience their weddings as one of their most cherished days.
1 JESSICA WINKLER PHOTOGRAPHY
DETAILS MATTER If they matter to you, that is. I was often told, “Don’t sweat the details,” but to me, the details are what made my wedding unique. Possibly, it’s because I’m a detail-oriented person, creative and nostalgic, but I loved looking around on my wedding day and noticing all the details that I had included.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUPPORT As much as you may tell yourself you have this under control, there will be times when you may need a helping hand, a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. Sometimes, all three at once. At first, it was hard for me to ask for help, but I soon learned I wouldn’t make it without my support team. This could mean
REEM PHOTOGRAPHY INDIE PEARL PHOTOGRAPHY
4 assigning tasks to your significant other, enlisting the help of your bridal party, asking advice of your family, or hiring a planner or day-of coordinator.
3
DO YOUR RESEARCH I cannot say this enough. In fact, I state it in almost every story I write. We have access to so many research tools — websites, word of mouth, social media, online reviews, magazines and more. Learn all that you can about your potential vendors before committing. It is wise to have first and second options. Your first option could be unavailable on your date, or you might not click when you meet.
MAKE A BUDGET I know — you hear this from every wedding source out there. Take an evening, get a glass of wine, sit down with your partner and determine what’s important to you. What do you want to prioritize spending money on? What will you not budge on? Where are some areas you could see yourself budging if you have to? Have you accounted for extra fees or tips?
5
ORGANIZE Do what suits you, but organization is key especially in the month before the wedding. Whether digital or print, keep all of your contracts and paperwork in one place. Excel, Word and Google Docs are great options for simplified sharing. Many wedding website platforms have built-in to-do lists, guest list organizers, seating charts, gift registries and more.
6
TIMELINE It is important to have a timeline for your wedding day to ensure nothing is missed or misplaced. When making a timeline, allow yourself a little more time than you think you need. Make the timeline as a couple, with your maid of honor or your planner. From there, hand it over to your planner, officiant,
photographer, videographer, caterer and any other vendor who may need it. After that, forget about it. Seriously, forget the timeline. You have handed the timeline off to others, so you don’t have to worry about it on that day. I suggest not even checking the time on your wedding day.
7
PACK AHEAD Pack ahead, and pack a bag for every occasion. This could include the rehearsal dinner, a bag if you’re spending the night before the wedding away from your fiancé, a day-of getting ready bag, a wedding bag and a honeymoon bag. Extra points if the bags are easily distinguishable.
8
TAKE IT ALL IN This is a once-in-a-lifetime day. Take every single moment you can to absorb the beauty of this day. Get your parents out on the dance floor. Hold your grandparents’ hands. Take shots of tequila and laugh all night with your best friends. Say thank you over and over again to your vendors. Kiss your new husband or wife at every possible opportunity. Express your gratitude to these wonderful people you have in your life, and don’t take for granted this day spent with them. ▪ NORTHWEST FLORIDA WEDDINGS 2022

A Coastal Cover Couple The Partins say ‘I Do’ with tropical glamour By Rebecca Padgett Frett Photography by Robert Young | Forever Young Images
O
n her wedding day, Claire Partin looked down the aisle toward the best view she had witnessed in her life: the faces of her smiling friends and family, her husband’s tears of joy and the scenery of emerald waves and a stunning sunset. Claire and Jake Partin, our cover couple, are selfproclaimed beach lovers, visiting Florida’s beaches yearly from their home in Louisiana. When Jake got down on one knee, it was in the sugar sand. They knew they would marry with a beachside backdrop. Upon visiting Hilton Sandestin Beach Gol Resort & Spa, they agreed it was the one. Complete with an inclusive wedding package, a highly accommodating planner and a large breathtaking deck that overlooked the ocean, their decision was an easy one. Throughout the planning process, Claire found herself grateful for two women — her planner, Angela, and her mother, Mollie. Both women had the couple’s best interests in mind, coordinated the details and made it a stress-free and enjoyable process as they helped shape Claire’s special day. Tropical elegance and coastal glam best describe the day. The ceremony and reception space were adorned with white lilies and orchids. The bride wore a dress of intricate lace with dazzling jewelry, and her long hair was fashioned in loose waves. The groom was dashing in a tailored navy-blue suit. Among the many special moments of the day, Claire most
often reflects on the dance she shared with her father, an unplanned first look with her brother and the moment she joined Jake at the altar. Through tears, the couple exchanged handwritten vows expressing why they loved one another and made promises they find themselves reflecting upon daily in their marriage. “It’s easy to get caught up in the beauty of the ceremony or the fun of the celebration, but at its core, our wedding day was about coming together as one with God behind us and our family in front of us,” said Claire. “It was the most meaningful day of our lives because it reflected he’s the one for me and I’m the one for him.” ▪

HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH GOLF RESORT & SPA Miramar Beach
“The Hilton Sandestin Beach was sort of always a ‘dream wedding’ idea of mine after being there probably 10 years prior and encountering a wedding during our stay. I never actually expected it to happen, but when we got engaged and started looking for beach wedding venues that would accommodate our requirement for having our fur babies present, Angela and the Hilton Sandestin Beach came through and allowed me to have my dream wedding at my dream venue. “The entire wedding day was amazing even with the weather issues. Some of the best parts of the day were seeing my fur babies walk down the aisle and be present with us for the ceremony. Despite Hilton Sandestin not being a pet-friendly hotel, Angela and the team at Hilton Sandestin helped us to find a way for our fur babies to participate in our wedding as our ‘Flower Girl’ and ‘Ring Bearer.’ ” — Brittany Grimes, Niceville, Florida PHOTOS BY ANGIE WAGNER WITH SUNSET IMAGES PHOTOGRAPHY

“John and I got engaged on vacation in Destin, and it was a good midpoint for guests; that’s why we decided on the coast. We really liked Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort because of the concept of utilizing once location for the ceremony and reception. We loved the community feel and the variety of things to do while on property. On top of that, we couldn’t go wrong with the stunning sunset views. “Jen and the Sandestin team made the planning process a breeze by being responsive, helpful and timely. How to W Say ‘I Do’ to a Venue
hen you envision your wedding day, your mind may blur then spiral before tunneling into a crystalline clear vision of your venue. Whether it’s a beachside sherbet sunset, under the canopy of an oak, in your childhood church or surrounded by a luxurious ballroom, your venue is central to your wedding day vision. Selecting your venue should be one of the first weddingrelated decisions that you make because so many aspects of your wedding revolve around the venue. There’s also no better way to start celebrating your engagement than touring venues. It truly highlights the excitement of what’s to come.
Selecting the ideal venue for you By Rebecca Padgett Frett

NORTHWESTFLORIDAWEDDINGS.NET
ESTABLISH LISTS Before scheduling tours, it’s wise to sit down with your fiancé and establish a want/don’t want list for a venue. From here, you can see where you overlap and seek out venues that cater to what both of you desire for the day. Once you have gone on tours, the list-making continues. Making a pro/con list is especially helpful when debating between multiple venues.

wedding. Where it is your wedding, it’s wise to think o how your guests will interact with the space providing activities and dining options the day before, discount codes for room blocks, or even just an aesthetically appealing venue that engages their five senses from the decor to the dining. “Wedding planners looking to leave their mark are looking at Tallahassee,” said Renee Jones, public relations and marketing specialist with Visit Tallahassee. “Gone are the days of uninspiring venues and a fend-for-yourself attitude toward outside entertainment.” After over a year in quarantine, couples are looking to engage their guests in a true party, whether that’s a five-course dinner party, a full band performance, interactive games or a weekend-long experience.
QUESTIONS TO ASK: What is the capacity? What is included in the price? What are your preferred vendors? Can we select our own?
HELPING HAND A venue may be beautiful, but make sure it’s more than skin deep. It needs to be a perfect fit with the staff as well. Inquire about how involved they are in the wedding day, how they have handled difficult situations in the past and what sets their team apart from others. The people you work alongside are often just as important as the place. ▪
What are the ceremony location options? Backup location options? What are the transportation options? What are the parking options? What are your postponement and cancellation policies? Do you offer an on-site coordinator? What are the rates depending on day/time of year? How many hours are included? How much is the deposit? Do you have payment plans? Is it handicap accessible? Are there any noise restrictions? BRANDI ROBERSON PHOTOGRAPHY
BUDGET Your venue will be one of the most expensive aspects of your wedding. To give you an idea of what to expect, research the average prices of venues in the city where you are planning to wed. When budgeting, you should consider all the rental price includes. Does the venue include other services, or is it strictly the space? “Couples should be asking what is included with the venue,” said Kendyl Smith, catering and events manager o Four Points Tallahassee Downtown. “It’s beneficial and makes planning easier to have a space that includes most everything, so you only have one vendor to communicate with.” Where a park may be cheaper, you will likely need to provide everything. An allinclusive hotel ballroom may supply every needed vendor, but the price of a luxury experience will reflect that.
Do you have sound equipment? Are there any decor restrictions?

“After looking at other venues throughout the Southeast, Four Points by Sheraton fulfilled a lot of our needs, including shuttling our guests to and from the airport, discounted room rates, unique meal options, a reception package that fit our budget and assistance from a wedding coordinator, Kendyl Smith. UNIVERSITY CENTER CLUB Tallahassee “We looked at other options, but UCC had a very affordable off season, the food at our tasting blew us away and growing up in Tallahassee, I’m a lifelong FSU fan and so is my husband. “Pam and the team at UCC did absolutely everything and went above and beyond in making every detail amazing. They coordinated with all of our vendors and served the most delicious menu alongside our custom drinks. Pam is the most communicative person I’ve ever met, which was ideal for planning a wedding during a pandemic. BRICKS & BRASS Tallahassee “I was in awe of the entire venue when I stumbled across Bricks & Brass during my planning process. We chose Bricks & Brass as our venue because it displayed the exact look that we envisioned for the wedding. The exposed ceiling makes the room feel industrial, and the brick walls are beautiful and timeless. For me, the best part of our wedding day had to have been walking to my future husband and seeing my decor vision come to life. “Kendyl (Catering & Events manager) was the sweetest, most patient person to work with. From the first walk-through tour up to our wedding day, she handled everything so gracefully. THE EDISON Tallahassee “Before my husband and I got married, many of our dates and special occasions were at The Edison. We selected The Edison because of the memories we shared there as well as how beautiful the space is. We had a brunch wedding, which paired perfectly with the abundance of natural lighting from the windows. We loved having access to Cascades Park and the Beer Garden for family photos. “Kate Biel, the event planner at The Edison, was incredibly helpful, making our day look exactly the way we wanted. She went through all the fine details with us, eased our minds and was always quick to answer questions. She was so flexible and accommodating, from dietary restrictions to rearranging locations for events due to rain. We couldn’t be happier to have chosen The Edison. ‘Altar-d Vision’ Backdrops and altars create a scenic ceremony in any location By Rebecca Padgett Frett

artwork installations. Background ideas could include shapes cut from large pieces of wood, window panes, surfboards, a flower wall, drapes, a cloth with art or a quotation printed on it, wallpaper, streamers or an antique folding screen. Where these backdrops add some pop and pizzazz, plenty of Northwest Florida wedding locations let the region’s unparalleled allure do the talking. “Don’t overthink this. If your ceremony spot overlooks an amazing view, that is your backdrop, no need to compete with Mother Nature,” said John Gandy, founder and creative director of John Gandy Events. That being said, John Gandy Events is renowned for creating personalized ceremony spaces that reflect the couple. For the wedding of two attorneys, their design used a large partner’s desk covered with a wide variety of candles, creating a centerpiece that was both stunning and unique to the couple.

ll eyes should be on you and your partner during the wedding ceremony. You might as well give guests no other option by using a swoon-worthy altar. With the exchanging of vows and rings being one of the most photographed moments at a wedding, a beautiful backdrop can greatly add to the overall aesthetic. Where the ceremony space has long been a beacon of sacred beauty, the onslaught of Zoom weddings and downsized weddings led to an increase in altar exposure. “The ceremony sets the tone for the whole wedding, and the backdrop is the first major element of the celebration that your guests see,” said Kylie McKinney, sales and events manager of The Pearl Hotel in Rosemary Beach. While altars began as religious platforms, their wedding counterparts serve as the central focus of the ceremony — framed by the bridal party while highlighting the couple. In recent years, archways, rustic doors, pergolas, crosses, gazebos and chuppahs have been the envy of countless Pinterest boards. All of these options are often covered in flowers and foliage. Couples have begun including other geometric shapes, including pentagons, triangles and half moons. Missy Gunnels, owner of Missy Gunnels Flowers in Tallahassee, has recently had many couples incorporate a “moongate,” a large metal circle, up to 8 feet, encircled with flowers and vines. Backdrops can be as simple yet striking as string lights or as intricate and ornate as
Altars spaces have extended beyond pulpit and podium to include decor and personalized pieces, including family heirlooms, potted plants or trees, bohemian rugs, artwork, antiques, furniture, chandeliers and more. Cheryl Walton, senior wedding sales and services manager of the WaterColor Inn, noted that one of the most meaningful on-property weddings she witnessed had a family Bible at the altar that was hundreds of years old and had been signed by every member of the family on their wedding day. In many cases, the ceremony spaces have become a place of welcome, of comfort and of personal expression — much like love itself. ▪

BALL GOWN
DEFINED
Ideal for most body types but could be overwhelming on petites with very small frames.
By Janecia Britt Congratulations! You’ve found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with — now it’s time to find the perfect dress. Wedding gown shopping can seem overwhelming at first, but researching what styles and terminology to use when you walk through the door for that first appointment will be a godsend. Being able to articulate your favorite wedding dress silhouette styles will also help your bridal consultant at your appointment. We’ve created this glossary explaining the differences between seven popular wedding dress shapes you’ll definitely want to know, including the best wedding dresses for your body type and the benefits of each silhouette. When trying on dresses, no matter the style, you should go with the dress that makes you feel the most beautiful and confident in your own skin. TOP TEN TIPS FOR A SEAMLESS SHOPPING EXPERIENCE
EMPIRE
MERMAID
Think Bridgerton. Ideal for most body types and perfect for the bride wanting to accentuate the bust without being overly revealing.
Ideal for brides looking to show off their curves.
1. Start shopping nine to 12 months
prior to your wedding. This leaves four to six months for your dress to arrive and two to three months for alterations.
2. Know your budget. This will help you narrow your choices down and tailor your expectations. It is helpful to let the bridal store know your budget beforehand so they are respectful of your range. 3. Make an appointment. While some bridal salons take walk-ins, having an appointment will ensure all of your needs are met.
4. Call ahead. While certain salons may have your favorite designers, they’ll likely only have a select number of gowns. Ask them questions, like if they carry plus-size gowns or if they have your favorite style. 5. Forget sizing. Wedding dress sizes are vastly different from your everyday clothes, so don’t get worked up when you see your wedding dress size. Nearly everyone needs alterations, so the gown you buy will eventually be tailored to fit you perfectly — totally different from the usual “pick a size number” shopping experience.
TRUMPET Ideal for all body types. Particularly great for curvy brides who want a fit and flare look without the drama of a Mermaid-style gown.
6. Bring your accessories. Bring any shoes, undergarments or shapewear you may want to wear on your wedding day. Also, a hair clip if you’re unsure whether you’ll be wearing your hair up or down.
SHEATH Ideal for lean frames and athletic body types.

7. Stay away from large groups. Bring one to three people whose opinions you really trust. Too large of a group can become overwhelming.

8. Take pictures. If you need to simmer on a few options before saying yes, pictures will help you remember all the small details. 9. Be open. Go in with confidence, a positive attitude and an open mind. Don’t be afraid to say yes right away if you find “the one.”
10. Stay organized. Save all of your contracts in a secure location and schedule alterations with enough time for any lastminute tweaks you may need.

“I selected The Barn at Water Oaks Farm because it was beautiful! I had seen pictures of it when it first opened and instantly knew that I would want my wedding to be there. All of the detail that was put into this venue made it so unique, and the venue had everything we could think of, such as a bridal suite that we could all get ready in. I also really liked that The Barn had a rental room full of decorations so we didn’t have to go out and buy decorations that would only be used for one day. MICRO AND MINI WEDDINGS
Make Huge Impacts Bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better when it comes to weddings By Rebecca Padgett Frett

JESSICA WINKLER PHOTOGRAPHY
W
e would be remiss not to acknowledge the many ways, for better and for worse, that COVID-19 has impacted the wedding industry. Couples and wedding professionals alike have had to reconceptualize weddings, become more creative than ever and band together all in the name of love. A positive that COVID-19 brought to the forefront was reminding us of the intimacy at the core of a wedding. Terms used with increasing frequency over the past year include downsized, microwedding, minimony, intimate gathering and elopement. While the circumstances that brought forth the occurrences of these style ceremonies are less than ideal, I believe smaller weddings are here to stay for the long haul. Traditionally, elopements were performed in secret, with family and friends only being informed after the ceremony. It is viewed as non-traditional yet the most intimate because it focuses on the couple rather than the guest experience. A minimony is typically 10 to 20 attendees who witness the vows and commitment ceremony performed by

an officiant. After, events could include a first dance, a meal, a cake cutting and photographs. Microweddings have become the most popular recently because they hold the same aspects of a large wedding but with a downsized guest list of less than 50. For many, this has become the ideal option because it allows you to utilize your valued vendors and create your special day … just on a smaller scale. “Smaller weddings do not equate to fewer special moments,” said Kristi Summerlin, who works in marketing and sales for SunQuest Beach Weddings. “If anything, smaller weddings can allow you to refocus your budget on elevated experiences.” Summerlin said these experiences could include a beach bonfire, hiring a band or acoustic act or celebrating with a candlelit dinner on the beach. Diane Bardhi, owner of Sweet Tea Events in Tallahassee, emphasized that the number of wedding day vendors usually stays the same no matter the wedding size, but the money saved by inviting fewer guests can be allocated to another distinctive feature, such as a videographer, photobooth or a dessert bar. At smaller weddings, guests notice the details you put time and care into.
You will be able to create a customized experience that both grants your wishes and makes your guests feel all the more special for making the invite list. Meals have become a major way to make a microwedding shine, especially since plated meals are used more often than buffets or food stations. Individually packaged and portioned appetizers and plated meals not only cater to fewer points of contact but also to more culinary creativity. “Smaller weddings provide the opportunity for a good deal of detail work,” said Samantha Roche, director of events and operations for Andrew’s Catering. “It allows for the couple to be extremely specific with each facet of their meal; from custom recipes to elaborate plating techniques, the options are endless.” While a large wedding venue is always an option, microweddings expand your venue options, allowing you to think outside of the box to include spaces such as a rental home, your favorite restaurant, public parks and other more intimate spaces. While travel may be limited, couples still find ways to make their destination weddings happen. “Hilton Sandestin Beach has seen a huge increase in rescheduled
destination weddings,” said Angela Kramer, wedding and special events manager at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa. “Guests are now looking to plan something stateside to avoid traveling overseas. Thanks to our enviable location on Florida’s northwest coast, we can offer a safe domestic destination without sacrificing stunning ocean views.” There is no denying that choosing a downsized wedding requires deliberation, but on that day, what you will value Kristi Summerlin, most is the time SunQuest Beach Weddings you get to spend with each guest. Those you hold most near and dear will be present to witness your marriage and celebrate you. Intimate weddings have caused many to reconfigure and reconsider their special day. While that image may be ever changing, what continues to strengthen is the meaning of marriage. ▪

Dessert Takes The Cake By Janecia Britt
A
wedding cake is the cherry on top of an amazing night. But why settle for a classic, white confection when your wedding day should be an event that is uniquely yours? Whether you aren a fan of standard bigday cakes or are obsessed with a specific sweet treat, your wedding dessert is the perfect opportunity to share your tastes with your guests. Ready for inspiration? Consider dressing up a traditional cake with additional treats (macarons or cake pops, for example), opting for an entirely different sweet (hello, brownies and cheesecake!), or embracing a non-cake dessert that celebrates 64

your wedding location or heritage. Below we’ve rounded up a few options that will make your big day extra sweet. DOUGHNUTS Doughnut walls have gained popularity at weddings over the last couple of years. Rethink that trend by displaying these desserts in a pyramid shape. The result? A treat that resembles a wedding cake but still deviates from tradition. PIES Thanksgiving lovers, this one’s for you. Substitute wedding cake with a variety of pie flavors for a truly personalized wedding reception menu. Whether you
crave pumpkin pie all year-round or a crisp apple alternative is your go-to, having wedding pies instead of cake is a no-brainer. MACARONS A macaron is a sweet meringue-based confection loved by Francophiles everywhere. Displaying these sugary discs can be tricky but certainly not impossible. A custom stand will allow them to be turned on edge and stacked, creating a cohesive, elegant display. CANNOLI TOWER Cannoli are Italian pastries consisting of tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing ricotta. A cannoli tower is a popular idea for weddings; decorate it with fresh blooms and fresh berries for an elegant touch. CROQUEMBOUCHE Croquembouche, a classic French wedding cake, is a beautiful tower of fluffy, bite-size cream-filled choux pastries just like éclairs, assembled into a cone shape using caramel syrup. The traditional decoration for the dessert is spun sugar ribbons, but they can also be drizzled with chocolate, icing sugar or caramel. ▪

A Hilton Sandestin Honeymoon The emerald waves called, we answered By Rebecca Padgett Frett
W
ith the stress of a 2020 wedding in the rearview, I sat beside my husband in a lounge chair overlooking emerald waters with a tropical cocktail in my now diamond-banded hand. Originally, we were supposed to be on safari in South Africa. Once it is safe, we intend to go, but reflecting back, an Emerald Coast honeymoon was exactly what we needed. After a hectic year, we came to the realization that we wanted to be pampered and at ease. We wanted a location that was equal parts activities and relaxation, luxury and laid-back. The Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa provided that and more. The first order of business was witnessing our view, which was scenic, serene and seemingly stretched for miles. We partook in a celebratory glass of champagne before we were summoned by the siren song of the gently lapping waves. 80

A quick call ahead, and our chairs, umbrella and towels awaited us beachside for all-day use. Beachside amenities also include kayaks, paddleboards, volleyball and a beach bonfire set up — optimal romance on a chilly Northwest Florida night. Being a private beach whose sand is stunningly white and pristine, we didn’t have to worry about overcrowding or noise, just peace. We spent time alternating between the outdoor pool, indoor pool and hot tub. Unless it’s winter, you don’t have to go indoors to dine or drink; Barefoot’s Beachside Bar and Grill is right on the main deck. Nothing hits the spot in the middle of a sun-filled day like a grouper sandwich and a sunburnt margarita. One of the aspects we anticipated most was the hotel’s award-winning Serenity by the sea Spa. We arrived an hour early to our couple’s massage, where we donned
fluffy robes in the separate women’s and men’s spas. I entered into the tranquility of the cascading waterfall that filled the warm whirlpool, where I soaked before proceeding to the sauna and steam room. I lounged in a massage chair in a darkened room, somehow finding yet another glass of champagne in hand before meeting my husband in the massage room. The Aromasea couple’s massage was 50 minutes of intense relaxation as the room filled with the scents of lavender and eucalyptus. The massage therapist applied the perfect amount of pressure to my post-wedding stressed body, and we left hazy with bliss. When I travel, one of the aspects I most enjoy is the food. At Sandcastles, you cannot go wrong with any options for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I had the Gulf Coast flatbread twice: blackened

shrimp seasoned in Old Bay vinaigrette and asiago cream sauce, goat cheese and pesto. Yes, it was that good. As a sushi lover, my beloved rolls at Hadashi are the Sandestin Sunset and The Lady Bug, all packed and rolled with the freshest ingredients. The meal that tops the all-time list for both me and my husband took place at the crown jewel of the Hilton Sandestin, Seagar’s Prime Steaks & Seafood. Upon entering, we were treated as if we were the only patrons present. The attention to detail and customer care was exemplary — every question was answered, every glass promptly filled and every pairing flawless. We began with the burrata — creamy and balanced by the salt of the prosciutto.
I cannot pass up Gulf Coast oysters on any menu, especially when complemented by chilled Brut. My husband dined on a divinely cooked and seasoned 12-ounce center-cut filet mignon that he still mentions on a weekly basis. The sauteed Gulf grouper sliced like butter and exuded flavors I’d never before experienced in seafood. Sometimes as a couple, all we need is to disconnect from everything except each other. Our honeymoon allowed that to happen. When I reflect on our honeymoon, I will recall all of the beautiful gifts — the nights spent falling asleep to the sound of the ocean, the effortless days spent sun soaked, the wonderful meals we shared and the beach chair conversations at sunset. ▪
