What is DestinFlorida.com?
ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION WE’VE been asked the question, “What exactly is DestinFlorida.com?”
After my initial visits to Destin back in the late 1990s, I was drawn to looking online to find all I could about this beautiful place. Years went by and my family’s involvement in the vacation rental industry grew in sync with our interest in the Destin area. My destiny increasingly aligned with the Emerald Coast, as all signs pointed me toward Destin.
As we grew our online presence with EmeraldCoastByOwner.com and other sites about the Destin area, I stayed in contact with the then owner and operator of DestinFlorida.com. We eventually merged into the jointly ventured operation we are today. Since then, we’ve launched our newest site, started multiple social media groups and have grown our already widereaching Facebook and Instagram pages.
Just as it was in our earliest stages, our vision is to offer an allencompassing and easily accessible online presence for all things Destin. With an area boasting as much natural beauty as it does available lodging and amenities, there is something here for each and every visitor. Our aim is to ensure that information is easily found.
DestinFlorida.com provides a platform to view all that can be enjoyed and experienced in the Destin area, creating a hub for visitors and locals to find everything they’re looking for in one place. Our site features thousands of local vendors and excursions along with every real estate listing in the area. Viewers can read reviews, find local restaurants, book fishing charter trips or Crab Island tours … the list goes on. Our goal of being a one-stop-shop for all of one’s Destin needs has become a reality.
The final piece of our marketing umbrella?
The Destin Florida Magazine that you are reading right now!
We hope you will immerse yourself in all we have to offer — so much more than just a website. Subscribe to our magazine for FREE! Join our Facebook groups to stay in touch with others and everything going on along the Emerald Coast. Avoid high service fees on other sites and book your next vacation rental with us to save up to 20%.
We love feedback and use it in order to make our products better, with the ultimate goal of enhancing your next visit to Destin. Please visit DestinFlorida.com, check out all it has to offer and leave a comment and review.
DestinFlorida.com is not just a website — it is a marketing system that is interactive with visitors, local businesses and even locals who live here in Destin, Florida. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Angling A Legacy of Excellence
From humble beginnings, the Destin Fishing Rodeo endures
BY KATIE GARRISON
For decades, the pristine waters of Destin, Florida, have lured anglers from around the world with promises of bountiful catches and exhilarating battles against some of the most prized fish in the sea. Among the various fishing events that have come to define Destin’s angling culture, the Destin Fishing Rodeo stands out as a legendary celebration of the sport.
The roots of the Destin Fishing Rodeo can be traced back to the early 20th century when the small fishing village of Destin transformed into a flourishing fishing destination. In 1948, realizing the immense potential of the area’s abundant fish population, a group of local businessmen created a platform to promote the region’s sportfishing industry, taking the visionary step in establishing the Destin Fishing Rodeo.
That year, the inaugural Destin Fishing Rodeo marked the beginning of an annual tradition that would captivate fishing enthusiasts for generations to come. Led by the likes of Captain Leonard Destin, anglers were welcomed from near and far to participate in a monthlong tournament held in October.
In those early years, the rodeo, showcasing the Gulf of Mexico’s variety and abundance of fish species, drew attention to the region. As demand and technology advanced, the Destin Fishing Rodeo fell in step.

A noteworthy milestone came in 1958, when the dock-side weigh-in pavilion was introduced. The seemingly simple enhancement launched popularity among spectators and cemented the event’s reputation as a unique and interactive experience for anglers and spectators alike.
The rodeo continued to expand its offerings, introducing new categories and divisions to accommodate various fishing techniques and target species. The event also began to embrace conservation initiatives, promoting catch and release practices and encouraging responsible angling. These developments aimed to preserve the abundant fish stocks in the
Gulf and ensure the sustainability of the sportfishing industry.
Today, the Destin Fishing Rodeo remains inherent to Destin’s cultural fabric. Annually, more than 30,000 anglers compete in the event, attracting a mass of spectator crowds. Anglers of varying age and skill levels are awarded the entire month of October to compete for coveted titles, valuable prizes and a chance to etch their names in the annals of fishing history.
The weigh-in pavilion continues to be a focal point of the rodeo. Family, friends and interested locals and visitors gather daily to witness participants’ fresh catches. The contagious enthusiasm permeates the

Property owner and investor John Miller fell in love with Destin, making it a second home and a business
Feature
John Miller enjoys being involved in business deals. His professional background includes years in the auto accessory industry and portable storage units.
He’s also a fan of breathtaking sunsets and sunrises, white-sand beaches, and crystal clear ocean waters. Inevitably, a certain spot in Florida’s Panhandle won his heart.
A Cincinnati native, Miller first arrived in Destin in 2005. After vacationing with his family for years in Myrtle Beach, he decided to try “this other place” he’d been hearing good things about.
His post-trip assessment was simple.
“I liked Myrtle Beach,” he said. “I loved Destin.”
Fast forward nearly two decades, and Miller not only continues to vacation along the Emerald Coast, he’s invested in and owns properties here.
“It all started pretty simply,” Miller said. “It started with me loving Destin.”
Not long after that first trip he made, the market crashed, making it an ideal time for him to buy. Shortly after buying his first Destin property in 2008, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill hit the Gulf Coast.
“There was obvious stress that went with that, but when that was all cleaned up, I bought another one,” he said.
What attracted Miller to the shores of Destin, not only as a vacation destination but as a place he wanted to invest in, own and rent properties from?
He cited a few often-heard reasons.
“The beaches were the most beautiful I’d ever seen,” he said. “From a people standpoint, there’s a really cool, laid-back vibe — even in the summer’s busy season where there’s some hustle and bustle. There was something different about Destin than other places I’d vacationed. The best way I can put it is there’s always enough to do in Destin, but doing nothing is not a bad choice either.”
In 2013, Miller received a call from RealJoy Vacations property management group.
“They said that they could significantly increase my rental income on what was then three properties that I owned. In a short time, they did, and I was sold.”
DESTIN FLORIDA MAGAZINE 33

After diving deeper into Destin investment property, Miller received a call from realtor Paul Shorey, who would become the friend who called whenever Miller was on his couch.
“I was sitting on my couch one evening and received a call from Paul,” he said. “He had someone that wanted to buy my Scenic 98 house, and to name my price. After some hesitation, I did and it sold.”
Miller invested the gain into two more beach homes, one along 30A and another in Destiny by the Sea. He soon sold the 30A home for another in Destiny East. Then, Shorey called again … Miller was on the couch.
“I love it when Paul calls me while I’m on my couch,” he laughed. “Paul had someone who wanted to buy my Cobia
house. I sold that and rolled that into another house on Woodward.”
The pattern would repeat, and time spent on the couch became a profitable pastime for Miller.
“Paul called me two more times while I was on my couch,” Miller said. “I was able to turn a Destiny East property and a Destiny by the Sea house into two more Village of Crystal Beach properties, bringing me to my current total of nine properties.”
Partnering with Paul Shorey and RealJoy Vacations has proved fruitful.
In offering advice to fledgling investment-property owners or those thinking about entering the market, Miller noted that, “Obviously, the numbers have to make sense,” and that
“you have to buy it right and rent it out right.” Additionally, he said the industry is not for the faint of heart.
“Allow things not to be perfect,” Miller said. “In other words, don’t get into this business if you lose sleep over a $100 repair your lawn mower at home might need. If that’s how you are, this isn’t the right business for you. You’ve got to be big-picture minded.”
Miller’s experience has proven that expenses will arise. But the big picture comes in the return on investment. And despite the occasional, typical stressors, Miller wouldn’t change a thing.
“I love that I can vacation down here, and check on properties at the same time,” he said. “I absolutely love that I get to do what I do in such a beautiful place.”

From the Mayor’s Desk Destin Life Reel Talk
City of Destin public information manager Dr. Tamara Leigh Young sits down with Mayor Bobby Wagner to discuss creative transportation options for visitors to the Destin area.
to see safer sidewalks, wider bike lanes and more bus stops to create alternative ways to travel along the Emerald Coast.
Q: When we met with the consultants on behalf of EC Rider and Okaloosa County the other day, it was clear they were forward thinking in how to make the public bus system more user friendly for both residents and tourists, so I’m interested to see what changes they implement over the next year or two. You’ve also talked about an interesting concept of helping traffic patterns via the waterway. We already have a nice water taxi service on the harbor, but this would extend beyond that. Can you share more?
Q: I might be slightly biased, but I don’t think there are any prettier beaches in America than in Destin: Our sugarywhite sand is made up of miniscule bits of quartz crystals washed off the Appalachian Mountains over thousands and thousands of years. But one of the challenges with being such a hot spot and recognized for this natural beauty is traffic congestion.
Wagner: If you’ve been to Destin, Florida, for one day or spent a lifetime here, you’re aware of the traffic we all face during our warm season. Over 5 million people
visit the Emerald Coast each year to experience the sugar-white beaches and coastal lifestyle firsthand. To help make Destin an even more enjoyable area, I’m thrilled to announce that pedestrian pathways and public transportation are being reimagined! We want to create a future for Destin that is not only about moving people efficiently but also about enhancing their safety and enjoyment in their neighborhoods. That's why we have developed a new multimodal plan that identifies the gaps and opportunities in our city's transportation network. I hope
Wagner: That idea for another mode of transportation, one I’m excited about, is a ferry system. The Choctawhatchee Bay connects the Florida Panhandle with its abundant waterways. This natural gift can be used to improve the mobility and quality of life of the people in Okaloosa and Walton County. I envision an enclosed, air-conditioned ferry system that links Destin, Fort Walton, Shalimar, Niceville, Baytowne, Freeport, and 30A. This will enable locals and tourists to explore different cities and local businesses with ease and comfort. I am committed to creating transportation options that encourage us to reconnect with nature and one another.

BY KATIE GARRISON
LULU’S DESTIN IS A COASTAL RESTAURANT RETREAT OFFERING regional fare, live music and regular events. Serving up tantalizing menu selections of authentic coastal cuisine, LuLu’s prides itself on its 100% scratch-made menu and guarantees safe options for every diet.
Every dish is crafted with passion and attention to detail, from freshly juiced lemons to hand-stirred authentic gumbo. The crew at LuLu’s believe that preparing food from scratch yields superior taste and quality. Desserts are made in house and the signature fry batter always results in a crispy, golden texture second to none. Fresh fish are locally sourced, ensuring a Gulf-to-table experience for valued patrons. For those with dietary restrictions, LuLu’s Destin is a true sanctuary. Lulu’s extensive allergy menu caters to various restrictions, including dairy, egg, gluten, sesame, nut, shellfish, soy, and seafood allergies. When guests arrive, one of the first questions they are asked is if there are any allergies. If so, the manager takes charge of the allergy-specific meal, a “red ticket,” and prepares it in a separate area of the kitchen to avoid cross-contamination. Customer experience is paramount.

“Could we cut corners? Sure, but we care about our customers, and our scratch-made food speaks for itself,” expressed Gerard Tipton, Lulu’s president.
Rather than simply providing an allergy list highlighting unsafe ingredients, Lulu’s allergy menu is a separate menu solely dedicated to allergy-specific meals. By providing separate menus, LuLu’s ensures that guests with allergies never feel rushed or limited in their options.
“Our allergy menu makes people feel special and safe,” Tipton noted. “We see the impact this makes on people’s vacations.”
The allergy-friendly menu offers a diverse range of dishes that are both delicious and safe. From flavorful bowls and mouthwatering tacos to
satisfying sandwiches, their allergy menu caters to all tastes. They even go the extra mile to provide special gluten-free beverages, ensuring that guests with dietary restrictions can enjoy a complete dining experience. Most notably, as a nut-free facility, LuLu’s guarantees a worry-free environment for those with severe nut allergies.
While visiting the beach, it can be challenging to find dining options beyond seafood-centric dishes. LuLu’s solves this by offering a plethora of other choices that cater to different allergy restrictions while maintaining their signature flavor. Whether guests prefer land-based proteins, vegetarian delights or innovative twists on traditional coastal cuisine, LuLu’s has something to suit every palate.
Also, the culinary haven is a vibrant hub for entertainment. Live music performances grace the restaurant weekly, creating a lively and enjoyable environment. Guests can participate in various events and indulge in fun excursions on the Choctawhatchee Bay, including paddleboarding and enjoying the arcade.
More than just a restaurant, Lulu’s is the epitome of exceptional coastal cuisine with a commitment to customer satisfaction, creating a safe and enjoyable environment for all diners.
“We genuinely care about our customers,” Tipton said.
The proof is in the pudding … and the dinner too.
When searching for a safe dining experience that combines delicious flavors, exceptional service and a warm, inviting atmosphere, look no further than LuLu’s Destin. Your taste buds will thank you.
What’s Not to Love?
Noon Year’s Eve
LuLu’s Destin’s annual Noon Year’s Eve celebration is a free event dedicated exclusively to kids and families. On December 31, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., join the festivities and witness the “fireworks” display and a massive beach-ball drop at noon, signaling the start of the new year on the sandy beach. The event offers kid-friendly fun with arts and crafts, inflatables, face painting, live music and more.

LuLu’s Destin is the place to be for live music, with live performances almost daily. Whether you’re enjoying their delicious coastal cuisines, basking in the beachy ambiance or simply looking to unwind, LuLu’s ensures a daily dose of musical delight to elevate your dining experience to a new level of entertainment.

Foodie Review: O’Quigley’s Sports Bar
BY SUTTON GODAR
▶ Welcome back for our latest food review of restaurants in Destin, Florida! This time around we found ourselves at one of Destin’s best joints for fresh seafood and good times, O’Quigley’s Seafood Steamer & Oyster Sports Bar! The atmosphere offers a unique vibe that you will not find anywhere else in Destin, where the timeless Irish-pub style meets modern sports bar. The menu serves up game-day classics like burgers and wings and honors locality, serving up fresh Gulf seafood and oysters.
Greetings! John and I are both locals, dog lovers and foodies at heart. While we’re not professional chefs, we do love to eat! We like looking for the off-thebeaten-path type of places, and trying their unique and signature offerings. I’m a local photographer and John serves in the military. He often accompanies me on my photography shoots. This puts us all over the coast at any given time of day. And when we are out, we love to eat. We hope to share with you our experiences of these hidden-gem restaurants along the Emerald Coast. Come along for the ride, and enjoy some of the secret food stops in Destin!
As always, we had to start with an appetizer, ordering the O’Quigley’s Shrimp Dip, a healthy serving of queso cheese topped with perfectly blackened shrimp. The slightly spicy kick from the blackened shrimp pairs perfectly with the warm, savory queso cheese to bring you a unique take on a classic appetizer. A large plate of well-seasoned tortilla chips joins it to start the meal off on a great note.
First up for the main courses, the Destin Shrimp Tacos left us craving another serving. I typically find hesitancy when ordering seafood tacos, as most places
don’t serve them with enough sauce, but O’Quigley’s did not disappoint. A generous portion of cilantro aioli complemented the lightly battered shrimp with accompanying sour cream and pico de gallo toppings. These shrimp tacos soared above the rest, making it a dish I would have to order again. Our other main dish topped off the experience. The Grouper Reuben Royale was … amazing. A common staple at Irish-American restaurants, a Reuben seemed like a no-brainer, but substituting grouper in place of corned beef made the sandwich truly Destin inspired. Served on lightly toasted rye bread with a perfect amount of Thousand Island dressing and killer sauerkraut, this sandwich hosted the grouper flawlessly. Add to that the tasty fries on the side and O’Quigley’s had themselves some happy customers!
If you’re looking for some good vibes paired with fresh, local seafood and pub fare, be sure to put O’Quigley’s on your list. Stop in to catch the game and enjoy some expertly crafted seafood tacos and sandwiches, too!

Meet Destin’s
Real Estate & Social Media Maven
From legal aspirations to coastal success: Erin Treadwell’s journey as a top Destin realtor
BY NICK COREY
PERHAPS SELLING REAL ESTATE WAS ALL PART of an inevitable path Erin Treadwell didn’t realize she was traveling.
A record-setting real estate agent of Destin properties, Treadwell initially thought she wanted to be a lawyer. After graduating with a degree in political science from the University of Alabama, the desire to go to law school was no longer in her heart.
“I don’t know,” Treadwell said. “I just didn’t want to anymore, and I had familiarity with the real estate industry because of my mom.”
Treadwell’s mother was a successful agent in Northwest Florida’s Quincy and Tallahassee areas for 40 years.
“I remember the old MLS real estate listing books she always had with her,” Treadwell said recalling her mother’s tools of the trade prior to the conveniences of the internet. “Mom worked hard and did well in this business.”
Despite plans and education which prepared Treadwell for daily legal briefings and courtroom proceedings, she soon found inspiration from her mother’s hard work and success in the real estate industry.
“I guess getting into this career was kind of in my blood,” Treadwell said with a laugh.
Treadwell’s choice to leave the Tallahassee area and settle on the Emerald Coast may too have been in her blood, preordained. Her great grandfather owned the third house ever built on the west end of Panama City Beach.
“From the time I was born, I was on the beach on vacation,” she said, recalling time spent at her family’s home. “I guess the beach was just a natural fit.”

Buying the Beach REAL ESTATE | PROPERTIES | FOR SALE
“When I got here, Destin was just this new, clean place that was just getting going,” Treadwell said. “When I started selling Destin properties, there wasn’t as much traffic, not a lot of high rises, maybe 20 boats would be out at Crab Island.”
As Destin grew, so did Treadwell’s business. For 20 years she built a successful career based around her reputation as a trustworthy, hardworking and constantcontact realtor. But, as it did for countless others, the global pandemic forced her to reassess how she conducted business.
“When COVID hit, all I could think was, ‘Oh my gosh, what am I going to do?’” Treadwell recalled. “I’m a busy body — I like to be out and about working and feeling like I’m doing something. It was a scary time, wondering what was going to happen to the housing market.”
The mother of two boys knew a professional pivot was necessary.
“I just started digging in and educating myself on all the things I could find out about social media. I took classes. I realized the only way I could stay in front of everybody was to do it online. I knew people would be looking there a lot more since so many weren’t able to leave their houses the way they used to.”
An active presence on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook ensued.
As a result, Treadwell’s business tripled. In April of 2023 alone, she had $16.9 million in sales.
“I’d always done well for myself as an agent, but bringing all the social media aspects in … being active on social media, it brought everything to a new level,” she said.
Along the way, Treadwell has learned about video reels, pairing trending songs with her posts for maximum viewership.
TIMES CHANGE
Her efforts thrusted her into the spotlight of local celebrity.
“I’ve been to restaurants and people have recognized me just from seeing some of my videos and social media,” she said. “People feel like they know you a little bit just by seeing you in your posts. When people feel they know you, that helps them feel a little more comfortable with you in other areas.”
Areas such as real estate opportunities.
“Most rewarding in all of this has been the relationships and friendships I’ve been able to establish over the last 21 years,” she said. “I have a substantial referral business. That means a lot to me. It lets me know past clients feel good about the work I did for them.”
Whether it’s spacious, multimilliondollar homes or smaller, budget-conscious condominiums, Treadwell doles out her passionate work ethic equally.
“Clients have told me they love that I sell properties in every range,” she said. “And they see that I treat each deal the same as all others. That’s
important to me.”
With a booming business selling beautiful properties in beautiful Destin, she’s glad she’s not a lawyer.
DESTIN FLORIDA MAGAZINE 45
Realtor Erin Treadwell recalls a time some 20 years ago when Destin’s famed Crab Island regularly had about 20 boats hanging in its shallow waters. Today, hundreds of boaters, floaters and kayakers can be seen enjoying the bridge-side sandbar. Crab Island is now the area’s most popular excursion for a carefree day on the water. Don’t be surprised if you make a few new friends while you’re there! To find out more, visit MyCrabIsland.com!
