Family Ties

I CAN REMEMBER OUR FIRST TRIP TO Destin back in the late ’90s. I was impressed with how family-friendly the area was. Now, some 25 years later, that feeling has only grown.

My wife, Shannon, and I had just started our family. My perspective of the world and what matters most had changed drastically — owing to the two little girls now looking up at me each day. I was increasingly drawn to Destin due to how much my daughters enjoyed the area. I wanted them to be here, on the beach or swimming in a pool, loving life with zero cares in the world.

I liked that Destin was clean, never short on amenities and that there were multiple restaurants with playgrounds for kids to hang out while waiting for dinner. I noticed other families in town or on the beach enjoying much of the same things we did, providing further reassurance that we’d chosen an excellent family-oriented place for our vacations.

The desire to spend quality time with family might inspire some to buy a vacation home in Destin, providing flexibility to plan yearly family trips in a place that builds everlasting memories. And as extended family members start making the trips, memory-making moments become enhanced, taking

family vacations to entirely new levels! Time well spent with family encourages more of the same.

As the years pass, we learn how true the phrase “time flies” can be. We begin to value the priceless gift of time spent with our families. We watch our children grow, find their significant others, have their own children and witness the expansion of our family circles. In moments of reflection, we realize how special time on the beach with loved ones can be.

Destin cements family bonds, and frequent visits with family can form irreplaceable memories. If you’re lucky, you’ll have photos of the time spent with family while here. If not, be sure to capture those moments on your next visit!

Personally, my family is blessed to celebrate the fact that we all live in the area now. We have made Destin our permanent home. And we hope you can bring your loved ones to create some of your own Destin memories!

WHO WOULDN’T WANT TO CAST OUT a line in the world’s luckiest fishing village? Destin’s fishing reputation offers locals and tourists numerous fishing excursion options. But Destin Inshore Guides and 30A Light Tackle Fishing Charters are two of our preferred businesses. Both provide a unique fishing experience with the same goal — to have fun while fishing!

Roughly 10 years ago, Josh and Anna Calhoon took their love for inshore fishing and created Destin Inshore Guides fishing charters. As Destin natives, Josh and his team of experienced fishermen have been navigating Emerald Coast waters their entire lives.

When the Calhoons started their charter business, they were family focused — a business attribute that remains their bread and butter today. Over the years, they have gained repeat customers that come back year after year for a day of fishing. They have enjoyed watching kids grow up and creating lasting customer relationships.

Destin Inshore Guides offers everything, including inshore and nearshore fishing. From their years of experience, they have acquired some advice for families setting out to sea for the first time:

“Kids typically can’t handle the long hours that come with fishing,” Josh said. “We recommend a twoto three-hour day, as we typically see kids tap out around the threehour mark. However, you know your kids best!”

Due to boat size and coast guard regulations, most of their fishing trips can hold up to six people. Destin Inshore Guides is available for trips all year, and they have various trip options on their website.

In 2021, the Calhoons discovered a need for a quality tackle shop in the Fort Walton Beach area and created Emerald Coast Bait and Tackle Shop — owned and operated by fishermen, for fishermen. A lot of equipment needed for fishing can’t be ordered online, which is why an in-person tackle shop is so important.

They have since experienced impressive growth, and they look forward to offering new educational and family opportunities in the future. This includes getting more involved in the community and teaching kids how to fish. Another exceptional fishing charter opportunity in the area can be found with Captain Mark Hotze of 30A Light Tackle Fishing Charters. Before Hotze became a fishing captain, he traveled worldwide for his government job. In his travels, he discovered two new loves — fishing and Destin. He knew he wanted to make Destin home. Hotze packed up, moved to the Emerald Coast and the rest is history!

Through Hotze’s years of travel, he gained abundant knowledge of fishing and chartering. Specifically, he offers a unique fishing experience called light tackle fishing, a method that he acquired during his time in Japan. Light tackle fishing involves a lighter reel with a little more flexibility, and you can use the rod to your advantage.

Good to Know

Hotze took his unique light tackle fishing method and his passion for chartering and purchased a boat in 2019. In October 2020, Hotze won Captain of the Year in the Destin Fishing Rodeo. Since the start of his business in 2019, he’s experienced a whirlwind of success and says he would be nowhere without his fiance, Kayla, who has helped him every step of the way.

A day out with 30A Light Tackle Fishing is a blast! Hotze will offer recommendations, but he truly caters to what his customers want for their fishing excursions.

“If there’s a slow day, I promise you’ll still have fun,” said Hotze, who will keep you entertained with fishing stories, tips and educational lessons while on the water. Some of his favorite charters are father-son trips. He loves watching kids come out of their shells and, especially, witnessing the love between a father and son fishing.

Inshore fishing takes place in waters roughly 30 meters deep or less. Nearshore fishing is a broad category of saltwater fishing that takes place in deeper waters beyond beaches, bays and the offshore drop-off point.

Gulfarium opens its new interactive dolphin exhibit

THE NEW AND MUCH ANTICIPATED Dolphin Oasis has opened at the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park on Okaloosa Island. The new exhibit will be an immersive, nature-themed experience reflecting the beauty of the Emerald Coast. When guests enter the Dolphin Oasis they will be greeted by two acres of sandy dunes, palms and the pristine emerald waters of Northwest Florida’s coastline where dolphins reside. The dolphin habitat consists of three large, interconnected areas, totaling over 1 million gallons

of Gulf saltwater and addresses three core pillars of the marine park — animal welfare, guest experience and conservation education.

Over the years, the Gulfarium has become a treasured favorite for locals and tourists alike, priding itself in providing unique experiences for guests. Built in the 1950s, the Gulfarium was one of the first marine parks of its kind in this area. Since then, it has grown exponentially, providing top-notch care to resident animals.

The new Dolphin Oasis will be over triple the size of the previous dolphin exhibit and will provide more opportunities for social-group variation for the dolphins. The Oasis will consist of three main habitats — a presentation habitat, an encounter habitat and an exhibit habitat. It will also have three back-of-house areas for the animals. The Oasis will provide further enrichment opportunities for the dolphins through new environments and enhanced interactions.

The Dolphin Oasis is designed to support reproduction and calf rearing, with plans to expand the Oasis’ dolphin population in the future.

As an accredited member of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA) — an international association and accrediting body for marine parks, aquariums, zoos and research facilities — the Gulfarium has great relationships with other marine-life organizations from around the world.

Additionally, the Dolphin Oasis was developed with the mindset of creating a new and unique guest experience. From all-new in-water encounters to dockside interactions, guests will be provided with enhanced interactive and educational opportunities with the Gulfarium’s dolphins.

On top of amazing new encounters, guests will soon experience a brandnew dolphin presentation. Returning guests will be ecstatic to find their favorite dolphin presentation will be back and better than ever. The new presentation area offers immersed bleacher seating with a capacity for 480 guests, as well as additional standing-room options. This will allow more guests than ever before to experience dolphin presentations.

Flora Complements Fauna

Life Support System

The new Dolphin Oasis consists of over 1 million gallons of saltwater provided directly from the Gulf of Mexico. Before the water ever enters the exhibit, it runs through a series of filters in the Life Support System (LSS) building. The new habitat is supported by a cutting edge, state-of-the art life support system using Defender filters in addition to sand filters and fractionators, which lowers energy usage by 50%. The Defender filters also provide the ability to cut oxidants from the water, allowing the habitat to house live fish for further animal enrichment and welfare. The Dolphin Oasis LSS building houses two fractionators, four Defender filters and four sand filters that will process over 13 million gallons of Gulf saltwater in just one day! This water is then cycled back into the Gulf, cleaner than before. Utilizing this advanced technology will help provide the very best water quality for the dolphins.

The Gulfarium’s new Dolphin Oasis was inspired by the lush environment that encompasses the Emerald Coast. With the marine park’s proximity to the beach, it was critical to highlight the importance of sand dunes. These natural structures are incredibly vital as they provide coastal protection from storm surge and high waves, preventing or strongly reducing the chance for flooding and structural damage. Not to mention the protection it provides to the ecosystem around it. All plants and trees inside the Dolphin Oasis were carefully chosen based on their relation to the area. A range of Emerald Coast flora were planted, truly making this exhibit feel like an oasis — from tall, majestic palm trees, Southern magnolias and longleaf pines to luscious dune plants like sea oats, sand cordgrass and beach morning glory, plus dozens of trees, shrubs and grasses. As you explore the new Dolphin Oasis, try to see how many local plants you can identify!

Big kids and the little ones will equally thrive at Destin’s ultimate water park! Big Kahuna’s is open all summer long from April through Labor Day. We found that people recommend that children 8 years and up participate in the escape room. However, we suggest calling to get the business’s opinion. Escape rooms are a great way to challenge the brain and work together as a family or gather your friends for an exciting night out. Groups of eight to 10 players work together to find clues, solve puzzles and pick locks that will free them from the game room. If you love mystery and puzzles, this is perfect for you. Located conveniently on Highway 98 across from Henderson Beach State Park, enjoy some family fun at Destin Laser Tag. This attraction houses a 4,000-square-foot maze that can host up to 40 people. Using a laser beam, players score points by tagging other players. Unknown challenges and strategies are put to the test in this maze. Once you finish, head over to Black Light Mini Golf, Destin’s only indoor mini-golf attraction, perfect for those rainy days. Black Light Mini Golf is great for groups of every age and every size. An average game can take up to 45 minutes or more, depending on how fast you play.

Destin History & Fishing Museum

Dive back in time and discover the history of the world’s luckiest fishing village

Since opening in 2005, the Destin Fishing and History Museum has provided various unique historical artifacts, details and accounts dating back to the 1830s. The museum is a pride point for Destin, highlighting the evolution of a small but lucky fishing village to becoming the angling and tourism hub that we know today.

You’ll discover a less familiar side of Destin at the museum and encounter relics of Destin’s past, some tracing back to founders Leonard Destin and Billy Marler.

“Everything in the museum is donated to us,” said Vivienne Williams, the museum’s executive director. “We are very lucky to be in a community that remembers and cares about their town’s history. Today, Destin is extremely fortunate to have all 16 founding-family descendants still living in the area. In particular, the Marlers and Destins are still a big part of the museum. Our previous director is a Marler, and the Destin family supports the museum through their restaurants and volunteer work.”

The museum also offers exhibits specific to Destin’s culture, including a gallery dedicated to the area’s famed fishing rodeo and the Mike Long Memorial Fish Wall, along with its historical artifacts exhibit. The Rodeo Gallery is an impressive element of the museum’s offerings. The Destin Fishing Rodeo, which started in 1948 and is still going on today, is one of the longestrunning fishing tournaments in the U.S. The gallery features a complete collection of rodeo posters dating

back to 1982 and two short films on the history and importance of the rodeo.

There are also a number of unique items throughout the museum. Among some of the notable artifacts is a fishing rod that Earnest Hemingway used in a Marlin Tournament in South Florida. They also have a world-record Marlin, over 500 pounds, caught on a 50-pound test line. But Williams’ favorite of the museum’s Destin relics is a rum-bottle lamp from the prohibition era.

Diving in Destin is featured as their newest exhibit. A five-minute film on the history of diving in the Destin area explains how, in the 1950s, the only place to fill air tanks was through the Gulfarium. Now, the area boasts its own underwater museum — how times change!

The museum has 5,500 square feet of exhibit space, a heritage walk outside and Destin’s first post office. As a community-led attraction, the nonprofit museum appreciates and welcomes volunteers. You can volunteer by helping at the museum’s front desk or assisting with any of the year-round events hosted by the museum. The best way to stay informed on ongoing and upcoming events is to follow the museum’s social media pages or by visiting the website. In addition to the numerous events, they also offer tours for schools and other groups. Make sure to call the museum to book in advance.

Individuals who are passionate about Destin can visit the museum and spend a few hours talking to guests and telling them stories about the area. Citizens and tourists can also help by donating to a specific project — funding archiving services, upkeep, maintenance and more. Contact the museum directly to get involved.

Destin’s history by stimulating interest in and an understanding of the village of Destin, its history and its fishing and tourism industries through educational and inspiring experiences.

“The most rewarding part is working with a community that is proud of its history and wants to preserve it,” Williams said. “They have allowed us to share their stories with visiting people and share the love of the area and the fishing community.”

This museum is a testimony to Destin’s history and a reminder that we must continue to honor our beautiful city’s roots.

The village’s first post office is particularly significant to Destin’s history. When Billy Marler was filling out the paperwork for the new post office, he came across a request for the name. Marler named the town “Destin” after his late best friend and the city’s founder, Leonard Destin. Thus giving our beautiful city its name. Michael Blyden’s beach videos offer glimpses of beauty, hope and gratitude

Michael Blyden is a walking billboard for much of the good that the Destin area has to offer, using his widely followed social media pages to depict the natural coastal beauty of his hometown.

Blyden may have been born in Hawaii as a child of a Marine, but for him, Destin is truly home. The married 34-year-old father of two has lived in Destin since childhood. He even married a local.

A karaoke night at O’Quigley’s some years ago brought him something unexpected.

“We sang a duet together,” he chuckled, remembering meeting his now wife, Leiann.

It was “Summer Nights,” from the “Grease” soundtrack, that launched their lives together, forever. A fitting tune to add to the soundtrack of Blyden’s life.

Today, Blyden enjoys boasting about his hometown, often in the form of breathtaking beachscape photographs and videos. Whether they be of early morning sunrises, picture-perfect sunsets or blue skies framing a day of surfing Destin’s emerald waters, Blyden is one of the area’s most ardent promoters and morning motivators.

“Having been born in Hawaii and then living here in Destin most of my life, living by the water has pretty much been my story,” he said. “Anything to do with water I pretty much fell in love with, whether it was surfing or paddleboarding or whatever. Destin caters to all of that, and I’ve enjoyed sharing that with others through the pictures, videos and social media posts.”

A devout Christian, Blyden periodically intersperses his posts with messages of hope, scriptural passages and gratitude.

“My relationship with God is the foundation of the beautiful beach life I live,” Blyden said. “The story wouldn’t be complete without Him.”

A handyman by trade, Blyden worked in various capacities of the beach-service industry for almost 20 years. He brings unique perspective and authentic appreciation for all who work in Destin’s tourism industry.

Despite its natural attractions, Blyden finds the residents of Destin to be its greatest resource.

“I’d say that most of us just try to be good, hardworking people,” he said. “Whether you’re an entrepreneur or someone who works for a company, Destin is obviously special because of its natural beauty, but mostly because of the community of locals, the people who call Destin home.”

There’s a positive aura Blyden communicates, one that’s infectious. There’s a reflective side, too. Perhaps his reflection stems from his faith, his parents’ divorce or growing up with admitted insecurities as a multiracial child.

Today, Blyden looks forward with hope and genuine positivity, all while actively praying that he can avoid the mistakes made and paths taken by various loved ones in his life.

Blyden believes it was a fertile training ground for so much of what he does today. He doesn’t mind his moniker as “the family beach neighbor” he’s heard applied to him.

“I guess it’s what my videos, whether with my family or alone, convey,” he said.

For his daughters, he hopes to convey gratitude.

“Whatever I don’t have control over, I give up to God,” he said. “I’ve learned to have hope; I want to provide hope. There’s a lot of struggle in life. I like to use the analogy that maybe what I do can become kind of a lighthouse for people, a lighthouse shining on the beach. It’s a good way to start the day, being out there, showing off His creation. You never know what God might organize and put together as a result of putting these positive videos out to people.”

A lighthouse indeed.

City of Destin public information manager Dr. Tamara Leigh Young sits down with the city’s newest mayor, Bobby Wagner, to discuss insider tips for visitors.

Q: What a terrific addition by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. For people wanting to visit, how’s transportation?

Wagner: You can have a boat taxi that can pick you up near the Point and drop you off at places around the Harbor.

Q: So, maybe grab a cup of coffee, lunch and just relax?

Wagner: Yes! You can’t go wrong with a cup of coffee at Capriccio Café or lunch at The Local Market.

Q: Every inch of Destin available to be explored, there seems to be a hidden gem, like at the Pass there are statues resting on the sea floor. What other treasures exist in this area?

Q: As the youngest mayor in Florida, what’s one of your platform topics?

Wagner: I’d like to get everyone active in nature. For those who have never seen a sunrise or sunset in Destin, they’re missing out.

Q: Where would you say is one of Destin’s best spots to catch a magical sunrise?

Wagner: Norriego Point! You’re on the beach, and the sun is rising from the East over the Harbor and the Fishing Fleet. With it being a peninsula, there are views from every direction.

Q: For those not familiar with Norriego Point, it’s near the end of Holiday Isle. It’s about 10 acres and overlooks the East Pass. If a person went to view the sunrise there, what might they do afterward?

Wagner: Stay for the swells. It’s one of the safer places to bring your family. The

city has built out natural swells that have the buoys, ropes and lifeguards that have created this kiddy pool kind of feel. Most of the water is around two feet deep.

Q: The “kiddie pool of the Gulf!” Are there lifeguards present there?

Wagner: Right now, there are lifeguards present about 4 months out of the year. But as we’re becoming a year-round tourist-destination spot, we’re striving to have lifeguards year-round. We’re working on it.

Q: Besides a safety component, can you share a bit about the other pieces of the improvement project going on at Norriego Point?

Wagner: The city is in the middle of a project to add a walking trail and bathroom facilities so people can spend the whole day there. The DEP will be building facilities there, and we expect it to be done in the summer of 2025.

Wagner: There’s also a beach access that reminds me of a speakeasy entrance. If you weren’t looking for it, you’d never notice it! It’s at O’Steen Beach, and it’s the only other way for the public to access East Pass. It’s also my favorite place to watch a sunset. The sun sets behind East Pass, and across the water is natural untouched coastline.

Q: O’Steen Beach is also where the Destin jetties are — those big boulders that extend into the water — so they serve as almost a barrier to the larger waves, which means snorkeling is good. Any other tips for those visiting that area?

Wagner: One last insider tip is to check the tides before planning a beach or boat day. When the tide is rising in East Pass, the Gulf water is flowing into the bay and delivering that beautiful emerald water that we’re famous for!

DESTIN IS ONE OF THE MOST MAGICAL PLACES to visit year-round. No matter what time of year you make it down, you will have a blast. However, July is one of the most popular months to visit. The Destin Harbor is hopping with activities, the weather is perfect for Crab Island and there are a number of Fourth of July events! If you plan on visiting in July, we’ve covered all the must-attend events and attractions to hit on your trip.

▶ Smoke on the Coast

Kick off the week on July 3 with Smoke on the Coast! Smoke on the Coast BBQ and Fireworks Festival takes place at the Destin Commons. Nonprofit organizations and local charities are at the heart of this event.

Each nonprofit teams up with a local restaurant or group to compete for over $80,000 in cash prizes and the title of “Best BBQ.” In addition to the barbecue sampling, your family can participate in activities such as face painting, photo booths and, of course, the fireworks show.

A fun event for the Fourth of July is Red, White, and Baytowne! You’ll discover something for the whole crew at this event. Taking place at the Village of Baytowne Wharf, enjoy kids crafts, face painting and balloon sculpting.

Live music occurs on the Events Plaza stage from 7–9:15 p.m. The event will end with a Fourth of July fireworks celebration at 9:15 p.m. The Village of Baytowne Wharf is a gathering place for locals and tourists, offering shopping, restaurants and other activities for the family.

The HarborWalk Village is another great place to enjoy Fourth of July celebrations. This prime location is perfect for your day after visiting Crab Island or viewing the ocean. Let’s not forget the night will end with a Fourth of July fireworks celebration. Don’t worry, if you can’t make the HarborWalk’s fireworks show, you can catch a show every Thursday at 8:30 p.m., all summer.

▶ For this go around of local eats, we decided to check out one of Destin’s newest restaurants, Beach Camp Brewpub. Located at the Destin Harbor, just off of Highway 98 cutting right through town, it’s ideally situated and easy to get to!

came out perfectly, with that seasoned kick to it that was just spicy enough. With their flakey crust and warm center, the hush puppies lived up to our Southern expectations and left us wanting more. For our sides we got grilled, seasoned asparagus and the smoked gouda mac and cheese, a killer combo!

Greetings! John and I are both locals, dog lovers and foodies at heart. While we’re not professional chefs, we do love to eat! We like looking for the off-thebeaten-path type of places, and trying their unique and signature offerings. I’m a local photographer and John serves in the military. He often accompanies me on my photography shoots. This puts us all over the coast at any given time of day. And when we are out, we love to eat. We hope to share with you our experiences of these hidden-gem restaurants along the Emerald Coast. Come along for the ride, and enjoy some of the secret food stops in Destin!

We started off with an appetizer of their pimento potato dippers and it is a must have for any pimento cheese lovers out there. The dish comes with four to five large potato wedge slices that are crisped to a golden brown on the outside, with a generous bowl of toasted pimento cheese to dip them in. We will in fact be getting this every time we go — it was heavenly.

For the main course, we ordered two dinners to share.

First up, the Gulf shrimp dinner aimed to please all taste buds. You can get the shrimp grilled, blackened, fried or Nashville hot, with a choice of two sides and hush puppies included! We went with the blackened shrimp, which

We could tell that it had been marinated and generously seasoned, giving it that smoky flavor and a slightly crispy texture to the outside while still tender and juicy in the middle. For our sides we got the collard greens, cornbread, kale coleslaw and their signature Camp’s baked beans, which rounded out the whole meal, giving it a true feeling of Southern hospitality.

Overall, we loved this place! The interior is fun and modern, the servers were friendly and the food was so good that the leftovers barely made it to the next day.

A: Pricing your home correctly from the start is essential — overpricing can lead to your property sitting on the market longer and eventually selling for less. If there is no history with the unit you’re looking at, it’s usually easy to find one that is comparable and use that as a guide while also comparing different units finishes, amenities, views, etc. I always connect my prospective short-term-rental buyers to a few vacation rental management companies in the local area for deeper discussions on what potential earnings can be. There are so many things to consider with management versus self-managing as well. Getting started can be a full-time job but it certainly gets easier as you buy more properties and begin to get a rhythm in place. As with most other things in life — it’s all about the team you assemble!

Q: With the market changing, do you see any seller incentives to buy certain properties?

A: With single-family homes primarily, we are seeing seller incentives in the way of closing cost assistance and financial concessions for buying down the interest rate. The closing cost assistance is reminiscent of our 2019 market. Condos, short-term rentals and second homes don’t usually get the same treatment unfortunately. Those types of properties are harder to get a seller concession, but price can always be negotiated, of course. Certainly, these remarks are not hardand-fast rules but rather a generalized synopsis on what our market currently reflects. Or, stated another way, it never hurts to ask! QUESTIONS?
