’ve grown a lot in my 20 years at Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, and my first year as General Manager proved to be another year of growth both personally and professionally. I have learned to take a step back each day and measure the needs required to keep this well-oiled machine running. As we celebrate our 40th anniversary this year, I’ve been ruminating over the even bigger picture — you, our guests. There’s one thing that has never changed about Hilton Sandestin Beach, and that is the level of service our staff brings and the commitment to guest satisfaction. This is what keeps so many of you returning year after year. I recognize what it means that you chose us, that you set aside vacation dollars all year to be here at Hilton Sandestin Beach. That choice does not go unnoticed. Our promise to you is to always offer modernity alongside that warm Hilton Sandestin Beach experience you have come to know and love. Our recent updates and renovations create a fresh look across the resort that is both new and nostalgic. We want this generation of guests to return to the same Emerald Coast destination that Mom and Dad brought them to as kids. We want you to feel like you’re getting exactly what you expected and something brand new all at the same time. Our new rooms were redesigned with the guest in mind, adding simple conveniences and a subdued color scheme to make it feel homey. Our ballrooms and meeting spaces have had floor-to-ceiling makeovers. Services and amenities continue to expand at Serenity by the sea Spa. And we are showcasing a brand new brick oven pizza bar at Sandcastles that the whole family can enjoy together after a fun day by the beach. We have no plans to hit pause on innovation. We’ll continue to update and improve for generations to come, with ideas imagined right here on property by trusted staff who work here daily. We strive to be the best of the best, and it all comes down to achieving our greatest goal — guest satisfaction. To create this little slice of heaven for people to come to, walk in that door and have the best vacation they’ve ever had with their family. To capture moments that bring families closer together. It’s exciting to think how many more generations we can impact with memories.

ome things are simply nostalgic — like the fresh scent of the ocean breezing through your balcony doors or the taste of your favorite summer cocktail sipped as you dig your toes into the sand. These moments elicit happy memories. That is what Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa is all about. Celebrating 40 years in 2024, Hilton Sandestin Beach has served as a reprieve for decades of guests, been host to generations of families and happily welcomed back those who choose to return each and every year. While that sense of nostalgia is important, Hilton Sandestin Beach has never been one to shy away from innovation. This year, across the resort, you’ll notice major renovations have taken place. Guest rooms are revamped, event spaces are upgraded and the resort’s lobby restaurant, Sandcastles, has received a centerpiece addition. All this among a handful of other projects that are always at play. Because at Hilton Sandestin Beach, we want that sense of nostalgia to feel new at the same time. We want you to know that you can return here year after year and get the level of service you expect as you make memories with your family in a resort that always feels brand new. So, call the beach hut and stake your claim to your beach chair setup, make your annual Seagar’s reservation, order your favorite cocktail from your go-to Barefoot’s bartender and splash around in the pool with your family. Get out there, and make those memories. Next year’s nostalgia will thank you.

t Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, the guest services department is so much more than check-in and check-out. From bellmen services to the front desk and concierge, the department prides itself on being present for guests from the very start. “When a guest arrives, their first interaction will be out on the front driveway with our bellman welcoming them in,” said Director of Rooms Robin Bailer. “We try to make a lasting impression from the moment you step foot on property,” he said. And after check-in, the bellmen escort guests and their luggage to their rooms, taking the opportunity to offer an introductory tour of the resort, pointing out the different dining venues along the way and answering any initial questions the guest might have. “The bellmen act as our eyes and ears,” Bailer said, noting how they ensure guests are happy with their room and often communicate with the front desk if any concerns arise. “The concierge, bellmen and the front desk are kind of like the heart of the resort, and the guests know to go to them if they’re in need of anything.” Bailer refers to his guest services team as the book ends of the Hilton Sandestin Beach experience. And he relies on them to ensure guest satisfaction every step of the way. But often, the experience begins even before arrival. Upon booking, guests will receive an automated text from Hilton’s concierge messaging service, Kipsu. After that initiation, guests can respond with questions or requests for recommendations. Members of the Hilton Sandestin Beach guest services team will respond in real time as messages come in.
Stop by the concierge desk for help and recommendations from the smiling guest services team.

Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa has remained a tried and true vacation paradise for 40 years and counting. LEONARD MARTIN
DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING, 30 years No one at Hilton Sandestin Beach speaks to stability more than Director of Engineering Leonard Martin, who keeps the building running, updated and up to code. Martin has always felt at home here and recalls telling coworkers at a previous job, “I’m going to run that place someday,” back when the resort was still being built. After working out of state for a few years, he returned home to do just that. Coworkers and staff have since complimented Martin’s dependable nature. Martin enjoys the challenge of continually evolving with technological advancements and appreciates ownership’s support in ensuring the resort stays at the cutting edge of industry trends.

She called housekeeping home for years before transferring to laundry where she keeps sheets pressed, clean and crisp. But no matter which department you find her in, one job has remained a constant for Mary Ann Waugh — resident adviser. Everyone knows she’s who you go to when you need advice or just to vent. Coworkers attest that Waugh helps them get through the hard days. She enjoys giving back to her Hilton Sandestin Beach team, some of whom she’s worked with from the start and have become like her second family.

THERESA BLACKWELL
For Louise Derry, service always comes with a smile, and it doesn’t stop at housekeeping duties. Small acts of kindness brighten her days, and she enjoys going the extra mile. Whether highlighting accessible features and amenities for guests with disabilities or hunting down beach chairs for a special occasion after Beach Hut service hours, Derry always delights in the smile and gratitude shown on guests’ faces. Guests on return visits are sure to come looking for her — both to seek out her upstanding service and to catch up and reconnect. And coworkers know exactly who to go to when they need a smile.
Teresa Blackwell is a people person. She has an uplifting energy and loves meeting new people, chatting up returning guests and maintaining friendships with coworkers. No department could have better suited her than housekeeping, offering both guest and staff interactions. Having moved from Alabama, great views and convenient beach access first attracted her to the job. Since then, she’s never wanted to be anywhere else. After three decades, through hurricanes, a global pandemic and renovations, she continues to find fulfillment in a hard day’s work.

KRISTINA MACKENZIE
DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES, 38 years She started out working the front desk during college, but a degree in sociology turned out the best training for Kristina Mackenzie’s Hilton Sandestin Beach career. She sees her human resources role as one big case study just waiting to be decoded. Her background helps her to keep a positive outlook and to better understand her staff, who consider her fair, approachable and supportive. Much of that stems from Mackenzie’s kind nature. Coworkers admire that she remembers the names of every employee and is always quick to introduce herself to new hires.
MARTIN MANLEY
ROBIN BAILER
After walking through the brand new Hilton Sandestin Beach some 39 years ago, Martin Manley knew it was a no brainer to jump at the job. A bellman in his early years and now working with event clients, Manley couldn’t tell you how many guests he’s interacted with, but he doesn’t mind that at all. He enjoys that his role keeps him on his toes and interacting with clients and coworkers who know him as a tireless team player. An avid surfer, Manley thrives in the resort’s beach environment and has no plans of leaving. When retirement comes, he plans to continue at his second home as a bellman greeting guests with a smile.
As mothers do for their college-aged children, Robin Bailer’s mom swiftly sent him for an interview after seeing a newspaper ad for jobs at the newly built Hilton Sandestin Beach back in 1984. The rest was history. Bailer has been with the resort since its start — from dishwasher to bell boy to concierge, and now, Director of Rooms. Somewhere in between, he met his wife while working here as well. Today, Bailer still looks forward to each and every guest interaction. He sees guest concerns as opportunities to turn a situation around and win back the guest, a challenge which he always accepts and regularly accomplishes.

THE MAKING OF A LEGACY
Young entrepreneurs Frank Flautt and Fred Alias discovered the best-kept secret in Northwest Florida
B
BY PAIGE AIGRET
ack in the early 1980s when interest rates had soared to nearly 20% and nothing seemed to make any sense, Frank Flautt stumbled upon the property of a lifetime. “When you do what I do, you get a feeling when an opportunity presents itself,” said Flautt, who had worked for years selling Holiday Inn franchises. “I took a car out here and was riding around and saw a map of Sandestin. It said there was a hotel site for sale.” Flautt called longtime friend and industry colleague Fred Alias and piqued his curiosity. Alias quickly caught the next flight to paradise. “He picked me up, and we drove in a Jeep through the woods,” Alias said. “I felt like Christopher Columbus discovering America. It was like the biggest secret around.” Visually, the site sold itself. But Alias said the demographics weren’t promising, mostly because they didn’t exist. The Sandestin resort was still up
18 HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH 2024
and coming, the area had about three restaurants and no airport, and group business didn’t exist there…yet. “The thing should never have worked,” Flautt said. “There was no group business here. There wasn’t a market for it. Fred brought the business here. I’m construction and operations, but he’s the marketing guru.” The two lean on one another for their respective expertise. “I know of no one in the industry that is more knowledgeable in development than Frank,” Alias said. Once the cards were all on the table, it was time to break ground on the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, an event the owners felt deserving of celebration. The year was 1982, and the budget was tight. A marketing brainstorming session left the team stumped when finally someone suggested a Beach Boys concert. “There was nothing here, there was 14 acres of sand and the water,” said Alias. “The hook was that it had
been eight years since they’d actually played on the beach. The idea intrigued their manager and they agreed.” With the help of Robert Kamm, CEO of Sandcastles Resorts, this event and the groundbreaking shortly after launched a hospitality legacy 40 years in the making. The Hilton Sandestin Beach later opened in 1984 and began growing in popularity. About 10 years into business, a one-question postcard survey went out to Sandestin property owners inquiring about their first experience within the Sandestin gates. More than 60% responded that their first visit was at the Hilton Sandestin Beach. “They convinced themselves,” Flautt said. “All you had to do was show the beauty of the area and offer a quality place to stay with good food and a fun experience.” Today, the two boast a new statistic — about 70% of Hilton Sandestin Beach visitors are return guests compared to the national hotel-industry average of 30%. “We don’t ever take our guests for granted,” said Alias. “Because, while you’re sleeping, there’s somebody out there marketing the next big thing.” And it’s not just the guests that stick around. Seven employees have been with the company for 30-plus years and 96 employees for 10-plus years. Great benefits, bonuses and staff amenities create a stable, enjoyable workplace. “It’s very rewarding to see some of our present team members, whose parents and grandparents have worked here, continue their legacy at the Hilton,” Flautt said. “To know that something you helped start has created the ability for others to experience a lasting, fulfilling career.” Now, 40 years later, Hilton Sandestin Beach has become a legacy destination, a place where generations of families can return to for decades to come.

A groundbreaking ceremony is held (pictured left to right are Dave Feder, Wilton “Chick” Hill, Frank Flautt and Fred Alias) and work begins on the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa. The hotel is built by Champion Construction, employer of field engineer Wayne Williford, who would go on to open his own company. Hilton Sandestin Beach has now worked with Williford Orman Construction since the late ’90s.
1984 On Dec. 15, the Hilton Sandestin Beach hosts its grand opening. The original hotel boasted 400 guest rooms, the grand lobby, Sandcastles Restaurant and Lounge, a smaller Barefoot’s poolside grill, one outdoor pool, an indoor pool, the Coral Ballroom, a fitness center, gift shop and theater. Among the first people to check in at Hilton Sandestin Beach were Sandcastles chief financial officer Robert Kamm, property controller for Flautt & Mann Charlie Birkemo, and general counsel for Sandcastles Roy Keathley.

That ISPA stamp of approval really helps us spa directors make the decision on whether or not to bring a product on board.” Thanks to the most recent ISPA show, new touchless technology options like the Wellsystem Wave hydro-jet massage table are now available at Serenity. “Once they close those doors to this private area, guests will be able to disconnect from their day to day. It’s a true zen room for our Serenity spa-goers to enjoy.” — SHANELLE LUCAS, SERENITY BY THE SEA SPA DIRECTOR uses hot and cold stones. And a new couples suite offers a spacious spa retreat for two in a calm and serene setting complete with a fireplace. Luxe massage tables offer heat and sound therapy and additional enhancements have been added to the menu including facials, body treatments and red light therapy. “The new couples suite is great for doing side-by-side treatments for anyone, not just romantic couples,” Lucas said. “Book a spa day with your best friend to get facials and experience this elevated space together.” Facials remain another spa staple at serenity. “Our most popular is always going to be our Hydrafacial,” said Lucas. She explained the signature service is popular for its promising results — efficiently cleansing and ridding the skin of blackheads. But services such as the illuminating facial have proven to be staff favorites, and for good reason. “It’s an 80-minute luxurious treatment using Phytomer products and includes a warm mud back wrap,” Lucas explained. “Everybody who gets it really raves about it.” Other new additions to Serenity include the cleansing and exfoliating Geneo facial brush and a return to the Jane Iredale makeup line which recently reformulated products to offer inclusive color palettes and clean ingredients.

But in looking forward to new services offered to spa guests this year, Lucas said she’s most excited to now have 10 Serenity providers certified through Voya’s Cancer Wellness Training Program. The training provides therapists with skills and knowledge to adapt treatments for clients going through any form of cancer treatment or recovery. Clients can select from any Voya service, including massages, body therapies, manicures and pedicures.

All the skin care products used during spa treatments can be purchased at the Spa Shoppe. • Popular high-end brands include products from Voya, Circadia, Phytomer and Pure Fiji. “The benefits you get from the products used during your facial, can then be taken home with you,” said Spa Director Shanelle Lucas. • The Phytomer product line has been a top seller at Serenity for over a decade. Adding to the new touchless spa services, red light therapy blankets are now accessible to add as an enhancement to your service or experience from any area of the spa. The portable mats simply drape over and wrap around your body for best results. Lucas sees this being especially popular in areas like the recently revamped zero-gravity zen space. This area was enclosed during the spa’s renovation and hosts six zero-gravity loungers in the serene setting of the women’s private lounge. Guests will be able to use this area to relax between treatments or indulge in a touchless enhancement such as the new red light therapy blankets. “Once they close those doors to this private area, guests will be able to disconnect from their day to day,” said Lucas. “It’s a true zen room for our Serenity spa-goers to enjoy.” While touchless technology continues to trend, Lucas said that “traditional massages will always be one of our top services provided.” Innovative enhancements create new experiences for return clients looking to make selfcare a priority. he perfect climate and Gulf Coast locale make this area a haven for golfers and tennis players alike. Our guests have access, through Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, to four championship golf courses among some of the most beautiful settings that the Emerald Coast has to offer. So it’s no wonder that Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa is one of the Top 20 Florida Golf Resorts, according to Condé Nast Traveler. If you swing better with a racquet than a club, the resort has you covered with access to 15 tennis 30 HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH 2024

The tennis center at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, set amid beautiful landscaping, includes private tennis courts, a renowned Pro Shop, a shingled clubhouse with decks, private lessons with certified staff, group clinics, children’s tennis activities and six pickleball courts. A complimentary shuttle runs between the tennis center and the resort. To reserve a court, rent equipment or check on the latest tennis happenings, call (850) 267-7060 or speak with our on-site concierge team.
THE LINKS GOLF CLUB The Links course, the resort’s original course, has been welcoming and challenging golfers for more than five decades. Designed by renowned architect Tom Jackson, The Links treats golfers to breathtaking views of Choctawhatchee Bay and Baytowne Marina. Not only do the coastal breezes help tame the Florida sun, but they also offer a good challenge on this true links-style course that has five waterfront holes. The Links course has four sets of tees to choose from and challenges golfers of any skill level. Take a swing on a course that’s been named one of the “Top 100 Courses in Florida” by Florida Golf News.
BURNT PINE GOLF CLUB Burnt Pine, designed by Rees Jones, brother of designer Robert Trent Jones Jr., offers golfers a one-of-a-kind experience throughout its expansive 7,000 yards, which include rolling fairways and strategically placed bunkers. The front nine at Burnt Pine takes players through pine forests and wetlands, while the back nine spotlights charming views of Choctawhatchee Bay. Golf Magazine has called Burnt Pine the “Crown Jewel of Florida Golf.” Seasonal and limited tee times are available.

RAVEN GOLF CLUB It’s not every day you get to play on a course where the pros sank birdies. The Raven Golf Club, twice a stop on the PGA Champions Tour, affords you that luxury. Some of the country’s best amateur golfers played Raven as part of the Division III National Championship in 2013. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., brother of Rees Jones, this course is just what the doctor ordered if you want to work every club in your bag. It meanders through wetlands, marshes and pine trees throughout Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Golf Week named Raven one of the “Best Courses You Can Play” on four occasions.
BAYTOWNE GOLF CLUB Accolades galore have been written about the course at Baytowne Golf Club, and they are well deserved. This unique course has earned a 4.5-star rating from Golf Digest and features a variety of elevation changes, which is uncommon for courses in this region. Designed by Tom Jackson, this is the only golf course along Florida’s Gulf Coast that stretches from the Gulf of Mexico to Choctawhatchee Bay. Baytowne Golf was home to the 2013 NCAA Division III National Championship. The course’s five tee locations offer a challenge no matter the skill level or handicap.

here’s no denying the beach is the Emerald Coast’s main attraction. At Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, it’s only part of the draw. On any given Saturday, you’ll find stilt walkers crafting balloon animals. Airbrush tattoo artists and hair braiding vendors visit in rotations. And regular events bring big fun. All this and more come carefully crafted and curated by the resort’s recreation team. And Director of Recreation Tiffany Howell is an expert at keeping the good times rolling. “Whenever you love what you do, it helps people enjoy it more,” Howell said. “You have more fun with it.” Howell spends much of her days beachside where she manages year-

You might even get the chance to learn a thing or two from Howell, who’s gleaned wildlife knowledge from her 22 years at Hilton Sandestin Beach. “It’s fun teaching people about dolphins, jellyfish or any type of marine life we see,” she said. “I just love talking to people about it.” At the annual Fourth of July Carnival, Howell and her team serve up epic family fun. Booth games offer winning prizes. Face painting and airbrush tattoos create festive looks, and kids activities last all day. As the sun fades, the recreation team transforms into the Hilton Hype Squad, roaming the pool decks, offering glow sticks and keeping patriotic spirits alive. A beachside fireworks display rounds out the evening.

Guests can decorate cookies while enjoying a holiday movie on the big screen by Sandcastles Lounge. Plus, hot chocolate, gingerbread cookies and kids crafts deck the lobby halls. For business retreats, conference gatherings and event groups, team building activities ignite a fun, competitive spirit. Among activities hosted by the recreation team are
scavenger hunts, sandcastle contests, beach olympics, beach soccer, beach volleyball, pool volleyball and cornhole tournaments. For groups large and small, beach bonfires are always a hot amenity. Howell’s team can set up an intimate date night for two with s’mores under the stars or a 200-person bonfire reception to remember. Bonfires must be booked prior to arrival and no less than a week in advance to ensure proper permitting. Planned for 2025, the indoor pool will be renovated to offer a larger hot tub, enhanced lighting, an improved layout, new flooring and upgraded furniture. The outdoor pools and decks will see even larger upgrades in the next few years.

table for two at Seagar’s Prime Steaks & Seafood is like a fine dining passport. You’re clocked out from reality the moment you walk through the doors and hear the tune of the live baby grand piano. You’re swept off to an unhurried realm where exceptional service comes unquestioned as you sit back and enjoy the show. “It does have a level of drama to it,” said Seagar’s Executive Chef Fleetwood Covington. “It’s like watching the ballet. There are no struggled movements in that restaurant; everybody has their own path, their own scope.” Captain service guides you through the experience, offering recommendations on food and suggestions for wine pairings from the 600-label wine list. Servers and server assistants ensure that your exact order is met and anticipate your every need. Tableside service carts roam the dining room crafting traditional Caesar salads and flambéing bananas foster. “All of these intricate pieces, they’re like a Ferrari,” said Covington. “If they’re not maintained, the car won’t run properly. And the least little bit that’s not maintained can definitely be seen.” Covington, who’s been with Seagar’s for eight years, works with the restaurant’s general manager to ensure quality and consistency — from the elegance of the dining room to the excitement of the open-concept kitchen. “The restaurant is really running as best as I’ve ever seen it,” Covington said. “Seagar’s has elevated us to a different level across the board,” said Frank Flautt, visionary behind the AAA Four-Diamond steakhouse within Hilton Sandestin Beach. “The quality of the food and the service is outstanding. It just doesn’t get any better.” Flautt, co-founder of Sandcastles Hotels which manages the Hilton Sandestin Beach, originally envisioned Seagar’s based on the classic fine dining steakhouses of New York City and drew inspiration from places like Capital City Grille and Delmonico’s. But 26 years of success haven’t come without innovation. “If you’re not changing and getting better, you’re getting stale,” Flautt said. Covington has helped keep the restaurant on its toes. “We could produce our best-selling dishes all day long without ever straying from those,” Covington said. “But if we continue to create and come up with new concepts, we’re able to introduce

our patrons to new ingredients, and that is what takes us beyond a traditional steakhouse experience.” For Covington, things like inseason truffles, Kaviari caviar from Paris and Miyazaki A5 Wagyu from Japan are now a Seagar’s standard. But at the heart of Seagar’s are prime steaks and other mainstays like steamed or broiled Maine lobster and Dover sole flown in fresh from the Holland coast. Still, Covington enjoys experimenting as much as he can. “I don’t ever want to dilute the identity of the restaurant,” he said. “I’m very fortunate that I’ve stepped into an infrastructure
that helped me grow lifetimes in a matter of years. I owe everything that I am currently to Seagar’s and the chefs that paved the way before me, creating this legacy I get to forge onward.” “It doesn’t cost you any money to spend time thinking and asking questions, tearing something apart until it makes sense,” Flautt noted. And you can count on always finding something new on Covington’s seasonal menus. Local ingredients are kept top of mind while also exploring niche markets where specialty dinners feature ingredients otherwise unseen in this part of Northwest Florida. HILTONSANDESTINBEACH.COM

here’s nothing quite like the excitement of a sushi bar. On any given day at Hadashi Sushi Bar, patrons clink sake glasses and enjoy the show as Chef Jin Kim and his team quickly yet carefully form the freshest ingredients into perfectly rolled sushi. Located just off the Hilton Sandestin Beach main lobby, guests can join in the fun from the bartop or Sandcastles Lounge. The casual and comfortable atmosphere is always a welcome reprieve after a day in the sand and sun. Sous Chef Juni Baek works alongside Kim, combining more than 50 years of experience between the two. Rounding out the team are Kim’s son and brother, Young and Leo. The generations of sushi masters come together to craft authentic sashimi, nigiri and handrolled sushi, as well as a rotating menu of specialty rolls. Warm up with an edamame or miso soup starter, or try a refreshing cucumber sunomono, seaweed or squid salad. Guests can always find staples on the menu like the California Roll and crowd favorites like the Shaggy Dog and the Spicy Tuna Roll. And nigiri lovers will enjoy options like fresh eel, salmon, octopus and tuna. But Kim’s specialty rolls always impress, and the new Cherry Blossom and Crab Island rolls join the menu as crowd pleasers. Also new is a selection of flavor infused noodle dishes including the Japanese Cold Noodle Salad and specialty appetizers like the Sashimi Trio featuring fresh Tuna, Salmon, and Yellow Tail. While Kim’s signature rolls will vary seasonally, guests can always expect the freshest fish available with the Gulf of Mexico nearby. And don’t underestimate the elevated experience offered in a hot sake or an ice-cold Asahi Japanese beer to complement your dish and cheers with friends. As the Japanese say, Kanpai!

or most, breakfast in bed is a thing only seen in movies. Everyday life doesn’t always permit time for such luxuries, save for special occasions like birthdays or when your spouse has time to splurge. But at Hilton Sandestin Beach, it’s a simple reality. And don’t stop at breakfast. Guests can order from Sandcastles’ breakfast, lunch and dinner limited menus and the Hadashi Sushi Bar dinner menu as well. So on those days you get back from the beach after sunset and dragging the family to a dinner out feels like far more than vacation should require of you — simply order in! Enjoy favorites from Sandcastles like omelets and Eggs Benedict for breakfast, signature burgers and artisan pizzas for lunch and entrees like Blackened Grouper or the Seafood Platter for dinner.

From Hadashi, splurge and get a sampling of chef specialty rolls like the Shaggy Dog and the Volcano and add on some appetizers like edamame and seaweed salad to round out the meal. For special occasions, or just because it’s vacation, arrange for an amenities order that’s sure to wow your partner. Fruit trays and charcuterie and crudites boards, selections of fine cheeses, meats and raw veggies, can be paired with champagne for a romantic evening in. And the Sweet and Salty Jars with peanuts, M&Ms and pretzels make for the perfect arrival gift. New amenities selections include the Mini Charcuterie Box and the 40th Anniversary Chocolate Box. While it’s best to order amenities before your arrival, it is necessary to give at least 24 hours notice. So, pop that champagne and toast to a night in with no worries!

EXPLORE ARTIFICIAL REEFS
In 2015, eco-tourists and locals alike went crazy for the new artificial reef that debuted in Grayton Beach. This man-made structure was coined Turtle Reef, as it is shaped like a sea turtle when viewed from above. Since then, the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA) has installed reef structures at 16 evenly distributed sites along the Walton County coast. Snorkelers and divers can find reefs taking the form of various ocean life to include a dolphin, a seahorse, a cobia and others. Like natural reefs, these habitats attracted the attention of sundry marine creatures that now live and flourish in the newfound shelters. At the SWARA snorkel reef sites, families are invited to snorkel and observe a colorful array of fish, marine plants and rare sea turtles as they weave through the towers of the reef. Conduct an underwater photo safari to capture the brilliance of the environment, skin-dive or stay at the surface and fish from a kayak. And diving to further depths can be explored at the SWARA fish and dive reef sites. SWARAreefs.org

BIOPHILIA CENTER
Though the emerald-green waters of our beaches may get the most attention, visitors should know that Walton County is a natural wonderland upland, too. Fascinate your family with a visit to the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center, nestled in an enchanting longleaf pine forest in Freeport, just a short drive from the resort. The center, named for the world-renowned biologist, explores the region’s rich biodiversity by way of trails, expert staff, interactive exhibits and displays. The Biophilia Center hosts events for the benefit of conservation efforts that are open to the public upon registration. Check the center’s website for public hours, and get ready to embark on an enriching adventure. EOWilsonCenter.org

mansion known as the Wesley House. Dating to 1897, this house is now inhabited by antiques and vintage furnishings that provide snapshots of a bygone age. Take a guided tour or feel free to roam the grounds. Weeping willows and oaks overhang impressive, green acreage ideal for picturesque picnics on the grounds or under the pavilions and for outdoor recreation. At one end of the property is Tucker Bayou, where anglers can spend the day casting from the docks. The gardens present a vibrant collection of flowers and shrubbery year round. Hiking trails lead visitors into the natural areas beyond the ornamental gardens. FloridaStateParks.org/parks-and-trails/ eden-gardens-state-park
MORRISON SPRINGS
Morrison Springs County Park in Ponce de Leon encompasses 161 acres of preserved woodland. Trekking along in the shade of cypress and oak trees, you wind up at one of the area’s most striking natural springs. Submerged in the crystal-blue waters of the spring, which is about 250 feet in diameter, are several underwater cave systems, cementing its status as one of
Florida’s finest dive sites. If your family doesn’t want to take that deep plunge, shallower depths serve ideally for swimming and kayaking. Snorkelers have the opportunity to encounter various species of bass, sunfish and carp, as well as underwater flora that thrive in this hidden paradise. Picnic areas, docks, trails and observatories supply all the necessary amenities for a perfect day. FloridaHikes.com/morrison-springs-park
TOPSAIL HILL PRESERVE
A local favorite destination, Topsail Hill Preserve State Park has it all. Its 3.2 miles of beach, tall sand dunes and rare coastal dune lakes furnish endless activities to suit your family’s taste. Take a guided hike or navigate yourself through beachside byways, wetlands and pine forests that are optimal for spotting birds wading and on the wing. Select trails are sites for caches if you’re a family of geocachers, so come prepared for an exhilarating treasure hunt. If walking’s not your style, bike along paved paths to Campbell Lake or catch a ride on the tram to the beach. There, you can sunbathe, search for shells, swim or rent kayaks to paddle for HILTONSANDESTINBEACH.COM

UNDERWATER MUSEUM OF ART
Bringing together two of Florida’s most beloved attractions — the arts and the Gulf of Mexico — the UMA is the first underwater permanent sculpture exhibit in the U.S. The UMA is the first presentation of the Cultural Arts Alliance’s Art In Public Spaces Program and supports South Walton Artificial Reef Association’s mission of creating marine habitats and expanding fishery populations. The UMA is located in 58 feet of water and at a distance of 0.93 miles from shore. Visitors traveling by car can access the museum via Grayton Beach State Park. Emerald Coast Scuba in Destin can schedule private charters. New works are added yearly with a call out to artists of the area. Hilton Sandestin Beach has become a recurring sponsor for the museum’s sculptures, supporting previous works to include: Wave! by Benjamin Mefford (2019), Dawn Dancers by Shohini Ghosh (2020), and We All Live Here by Merisol Rendon (2022), and Quantum Reef by Chris Chubb (2023). CAA
The Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) promotes the arts in our area. Founded in 1989, the CAA has nurtured cultural pursuits in our community by bringing in festivals, children’s educational programs and countless instances of funding for fine arts events. The Bayou Arts center, located in Santa Rosa Beach’s scenic Hogtown Bayou, is the headquarters of the CAA and offers over 200 familyfriendly art classes. Learn to paint with the beach-themed hues of pastels, bold acrylics and whimsical watercolors. If you’d like to try your hand at sculpting, ceramics and pottery classes are at your disposal. While the center exhibits its own art, you are highly encouraged to visit the galleries of its partners, such as the Foster Gallery in Sandestin. Depending on which time you’re visiting, you’ll want to check out the talents of CAA-sponsored events, such as the 30A Songwriters Festival, Art Week and the Flutterby Festival. And with Hilton Sandestin Beach proudly supporting their 30A Songwriters Festival as a lodging and venue sponsor, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy the event. Or for a more adventurous artistic endeavor, snorkelers and divers alike can revel at the subaquatic sculptures off of the coast of Grayton Beach. New works are added yearly thanks to the hard work of local artists and the sponsors who support them, like Hilton Sandestin Beach who has supported museum sculptures to include: Wave! by Benjamin Mefford (2019), Dawn Dancers by Shohini Ghosh (2020), and We All Live Here by Merisol Rendon (2022). Leave the wedding worries behind — Hilton Sandestin Beach planners have you covered BY PAIGE AIGRET

our wedding day will be the happiest day of your life. It’s the days leading up to it that threaten to drive you mad before you ever reach the altar: venue, caterers, flowers, decor … the list of to-dos goes on. At Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, your wedding experience will go off without a hitch in the safe hands of the resort’s expert wedding and special events team. That way, you can focus on the finer details. “One thing that sets us apart from other venues is the fact that we’re all-inclusive,” said Hilton Sandestin Beach Wedding Coordinator Meagan Jones. Included in the resort’s wedding packages is a vetted list of preferred vendors to work with, and couples can choose a wedding planner from that list to make their special day run smoothly. The chosen wedding planner will work closely with couples to help execute vision and style along with final execution of their wedding day timeline. Hilton Sandestin Beach wedding managers will work with the couple to carefully curate every detail of catering orders, setup and ceremony and reception space. They’ll also coordinate with the chosen wedding planner and vendors to ensure everything runs smoothly between the resort and outside parties, leading up to the wedding and on the day of. Bridal parties have access to the resort’s luxury Serenity by the sea Spa for pre-wedding pampering

and day-of hair and makeup. When couples come for a site visit, Wedding Manager Angela Kramer will stop by the spa during the tour to show off the 14,500-square-foot space. The spa staff will help schedule glam, manipedis and any other services the bridal party may want. Outside vendors for hair and makeup are welcome to work in guests’ rooms. During the planning phase, Hilton Sandestin Beach can provide brides with a list of vetted hair and makeup artists to reach out to. Attention to detail is always top of mind for Hilton Sandestin Beach staff who ensure your day exceeds expectations. Jones and Kramer enlist beach security should you need a lookout for photobombers during your shoreline ceremony and postnuptial photo shoot. Newlyweds can expect champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries and a personalized congratulatory note delivered to their room. If a midnight feast is in order after a reception filled with dancing, the resort will be happy to box up your Hilton Sandestin Beach catering and send it to your room. And professional in-house Pastry Chef Yascha Becker will always box up an extra layer of your dream wedding cake to freeze and enjoy on your one-year anniversary. No matter the length of your guest list, Hilton Sandestin Beach
has the perfect wedding package for you. Kramer noted that, in recent years, larger weddings are making a comeback. Typically, the resort maxes out guest counts at around 300. But Kramer recalls, on one occasion, a wedding of 500. For larger weddings, the Coral, Coastal and Emerald ballrooms can spaciously accommodate. But why leave the beach behind after the ceremony if you don’t have to? The resort’s event deck space can comfortably host large receptions across one, two or all three newly renovated deck spaces overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. One of these larger weddings from May of 2022 turned out to be one of the resort’s best yet. The wedding combined American and Southeast Asian cultures, styles and traditions. “It was cool to see the fusion of the two … and they were just such a sweet couple,” Kramer said. Catering included American-style cuisine from Hilton Sandestin Beach and cultural fare provided by Holi Indian Cuisine. The bride wore wedding attire traditional to the culture, but the style and decor of the ceremony held American influences. Still, she said, vow renewals and elopements remain popular. Kramer noted that couples planning
international destination weddings often realize there is a paradise much closer to home. The proximity and convenience award military couples stationed at surrounding bases an opportunity that might otherwise be out of reach. Small groups may opt for a short beach ceremony with minimal flowers and maybe a decorated arbor. “Often, they just want a wedding down on the beach; they’re very simple,” Kramer noted. Elopement packages can be personalized to meet each couple’s needs. “Our team is here to ensure every detail is taken care of,” Jones said. “All you have to do is show up, and have the best day of your life.” HILTONSANDESTINBEACH.COM

f you ask Kevin Rosa, there’s no better place to host a conference or meeting than Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa. “We’re all-encompassing,” Rosa said, “from our beachfront destination within Sandestin, to our meeting space, dining options and guest rooms being all under the same roof.” Sure, as the resort’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Rosa could be biased. But with over 30 years in the industry, his experience 76 HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH 2024
BY PAIGE AIGRET
gives him a leg to stand on, and the numbers don’t lie. “We’ve got about six groups that have been coming to us since 1984 — 40 years strong,” Rosa noted. “And it is because of the experience they get here. Obviously, the beach is a great draw too, but when they put Hilton Sandestin Beach on their agenda for their next meeting, they know they’re going to have attendees signing up in droves.” Of course, the emerald water and white sand gets all the
credit, but Rosa also noted the resort’s geographic location being strategically pinpointed between four different states, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia. Ideal location combined with oversized guest rooms, ample meeting space and a friendly staff — Hilton Sandestin Beach has perfected the recipe for events. All of this keeps many groups returning year after year. Some of the longest running have been visiting about as long as the resort has existed.
“We look forward to seeing these same people year after year. After all this time, they have become like friends and family to us.”
SCOTT HOLSTEIN AND MOON CREEK STUDIOS
— KEVIN ROSA, HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH DIRECTOR OF SALES AND MARKETING
“We look forward to seeing these same people year after year,” Rosa said. “After all this time, they have become like friends and family to us.” Hilton Sandestin Beach event planners will ensure every detail exceeds expectations — from decor to banquet food orders. They can help book activities like fireworks, golf, excursions and fishing trips. And they’ll work with the recreation team to schedule team-building exercises, bonfires and other on-site activities. The resort can accommodate groups of up to 2,000 within its 60,000 square feet of function space across ballrooms, conference rooms and expansive outdoor decks. The newly renovated al fresco deck spaces are perfect for casual meet-andgreets or reception-style welcome dinners. The three spacious decks can host groups of 80–1,000-plus, and deck weather is comfortable March through November. Inside the resort, brand new renovations have put a fresh face on the Hilton Sandestin Beach function space. Ballrooms are updated with new carpeting, enhanced lighting, wall coverings and paint. And the Sandpiper ballrooms have seen full renovations from floor to ceiling, creating a more cohesive style across all levels of event space.
New this year is the arrival of The Palm Room and two unique meeting rooms which can open to one full meeting space. Part of the Hilton brand updates, these unique spaces will feature interactive touchscreen TVs, bar service areas, comfortable seating including loveseats and chaise lounges, a vanity, dual fridge and minimalistic furnishings. Retractable walls allow accommodation of two separate rooms of 20 or a full space of up to 45. “These new rooms will be popular amongst business groups as trends lean toward more intimate, casual gatherings,” Rosa said. But larger conferences will never go out of style, he explained, adding that many businesses and associations are booking as far as two to three years in advance to ensure their spot in corporate paradise. “Groups want to get on the calendar now because of this beautiful setting we’re in,” Rosa said. “They want to meet at the beach.” Who wouldn’t? Corporate moms and business dads can pack up the family for a mini getaway. The kids get to spend the day at the pool, and parents can unwind after a day of “work” with a sunset beach walk. So, pack a bag. We’ll meet you at the beach.
“For more than 30 years, Hilton Sandestin Beach has been the go-to destination for our annual summer meeting. With its convenient location, private beach access, great variety of amenities and activities for all ages, and its ability to comfortably accommodate families of all sizes, the destination has become a favorite among our members. As our attendance has grown to nearly 800 at our summer meeting, we’ve appreciated the staff’s ability to meet our conference and rooming needs and to work with us to create a spectacular summer meeting experience for our members and their families.” — Russell Davis Home Builders Association of Alabama’s executive vice president HILTONSANDESTINBEACH.COM

OUR FAMILY RETREAT BY WILLIAM THOMAS
M
y wife and I have been coming to Hilton Sandestin Beach for roughly 12 consecutive years. In those years we have grown into a family of four. What has kept us coming back are not just the sunsets with cotton candy clouds floating in the sky — it gets sweeter than that! The staff and accommodations are the sweetest draw of all. Over the years, I have been helped by many of the employees. I always have specific requests prior to arrival, and everytime, the staff is welcoming. They try to always accommodate my requests the best they can. Each and every Hilton Sandestin Beach team member attempts to make our trip just as special as our last. Upon arrival we always get to interact with familiar faces. This is where the staff shines. Many of the employees have watched our children grow. It’s always fun when we order room service on the first day. One of the ladies will say, “it’s great to have you back Mr. Thomas,” and always comments on how the kids have grown since our last visit. The most impressive feat at Hilton Sandestin Beach is how the staff implements consistent cleanliness and beauty at the resort. Hilton Sandestin Beach is always in tip-top shape — from sunup to sundown. My family has been blessed with many years of memories at the resort. Both of our children have shared some of their first steps in room 142 and 124. Each year we return, the staff continues to provide us with the best service we have experienced in the hospitality industry. Because of this, we will continue to come back year after year to make more memories at our home away from home.

AN EMERALD COAST LOVE STORY BY JACKIE NAIK
O
ur return to the shores of Miramar Beach felt nostalgic, going back to the beginnings of our love story. It was during our first trip seven years ago that we discovered the magic of the Emerald Coast. It became clear that, when we decided to take our vows, there was no better place than the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa. Walking hand in hand on the beach, where we took our first trip seven years earlier, we were reminded of the impact this place has had on our journey together. Choosing this resort for our wedding was an easy decision. The location, the attentive coordination by Angela Kramer, the skillful eye of our photographer, Robert Young, and the creativity of 82 HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH 2024
our videographer, Cameron Zane, all contributed to making our special day truly unforgettable. Even with the challenge of heavy winds, our decision to keep the ceremony outside turned out to be a lucky break. The breeze, the setting sun and the crashing waves of the Gulf created a scene more captivating than we could have ever imagined. The blending of our cultures, symbolized by the varmala, a flower garland, and the mangalsutra, a necklace signifying marriage, added an extra layer of significance to the occasion. There was no better place to meet each other halfway. Our guests raved about their stay at Hilton Sandestin Beach, praising the pools, the restaurants and the indulgent spa. The resort became more than just a backdrop for our wedding; it became an integral part of our love story. A year after our wedding, we returned to Hilton Sandestin Beach to relive the magic. As we stepped into the familiar surroundings, memories of our special day flooded back. The resort felt like a second home — the cool, sugary-white sands of Miramar Beach greeting our toes, inviting us to unwind and create new memories. Reuniting with our photographer, Young, we sailed along the Choctawhatchee Bay during a mesmerizing sunset. The picturesque canvas once again provided the perfect backdrop for capturing our memories. Hilton Sandestin Beach is not just a destination; it’s a chapter in our love story. Our return trip, seven years after our first visit to the Destin area, reaffirmed the enduring magic of this place. The Emerald Coast has woven itself into the fabric of our love, and we are grateful for the role it continues to play in our story.
