WHEN SANDESTIN GOLF AND Beach Resort® opened in 1973, it started with just one golf course, a handful of residential neighborhoods and a bayside hotel. Today, the resort sprawls across 2,400 acres from beach to bay, featuring four celebrated champion courses and more than 70 neighborhoods with vacation and residential homes, condos, villas and a signature hotel. Success has come from creating an all-inclusive destination, where residents and visitors should never need to leave the gates to find a vast selection of shopping, dining, entertainment and adventure. The Sandestin® name has become synonymous with the Emerald Coast

lifestyle, defining a place where people can live, stay, work and play along the coast of some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. In celebration of the resort’s 50th anniversary in 2023, Sandestin® has taken their brand to new labels, partnering with a craft brewery and premier winery to curate flavor profiles that speak to the Sandestin® lifestyle. “We’re matching the elevated Sandestin® name with an elevated beverage component,” said Vasil Penchev, Sandestin’s director of food and beverage. “It’s creating an experience, not just going in and getting a drink, it’s you becoming part of something greater.”

NEW SANDESTIN® wines range from cabernet and merlot to chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. Signature brews will please craft beer lovers and include a blonde, pale ale, sour ale, lager and IPA. Coming in the spring of 2024 — four fruit forward seltzers!

With any Sandestin® beverage, the aim is to create a drink that meets the Sandestin® standard through an extensive and selective process. Penchev vets potential partners based on quality of product and production capabilities. “It is very important that we stand behind the people we work with, the same way they do behind us,” he said. “We are not just going to the first available or the cheapest and selecting that option.” After some research, Tin Roof Brewing Company stood out as matching that Sandestin® standard. In 2022, Tin Roof owner and operator Cammy McGehee visited Sandestin® to discuss with Penchev which flavor profiles best represent the resort. “I came in town and met with Vasil and his team. We did some sampling, we tried different styles of beer, we talked about what their market is interested in.” McGehee noted the importance of brainstorming sessions like these. Where a hazy IPA might be the most 14

popular beer in Tin Roof’s Baton Rouge, Louisiana, homebase, a lager might better suit a beachside resort. Penchev and McGehee’s teams brought to life five signature craft beers that cater to the market: Sandestin® Blonde Ale, Sandestin® Pale Ale, Sandestin® Sunset Sour Ale, Sandestin® Sunny Day Lager, and Hooked on Sandestin® Sunshine Indian Pale Ale. The signature beers launched in March of 2023. By September, they had already sold 35,000 Sandestin® branded beers. Penchev’s 20 years of experience told him those numbers were exceptional. The pale ale has been the most popular so far, crediting to its light and crisp notes, perfect for a day on the beach. McGehee said that despite its typically niche audience, the sour ale, with grapefruit, lime and agave flavors, has done really well. The IPA remains McGehee’s favorite and Penchev agrees — they make a good team. Looking ahead, the two are working on four signature hard seltzers to launch at the resort.

The beverage program branched out to include a selection of quality wines in partnership with an exclusive California wine company who hold themselves to high standards and whose partners must be vetted before creating a new label. “You can’t just call and get your own label,” Penchev explained. “They want their wine to be offered in an elevated facility.” In Sandestin’s own vetting process, Penchev aimed to ensure quality matched with popularity. He noted that many simply want a good quality wine they can enjoy without suffering

the consequences the next day. To achieve that, he says, the quality of the grape must be high with no added sugars or artificial sweeteners, which are often used in lower quality wines to mask the harsh flavor of immature grapes. The partnered vintner exceeded quality expectations. “We stand behind the partners we’re working with,” Penchev said. “The company that is doing our private wine label, they work exclusively with private resorts, country clubs and elevated restaurants.” Signature wines launched in July 2023 include the cabernet sauvignon, merlot, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. Penchev said they selected the initial varietals based on pleasing a broader audience. Going forward, he hopes to expand the selection to cater to more niche connoisseurs. The signature Sandestin® beverage labels offer customers the advantage of high-quality craft beers and fine wines at affordable price points. Penchev explained it as an investment to the Sandestin® name and brand, permitting the

ability to sell what would normally be a $50 bottle at $36, for example. The branded beverages act as a marketing component. “Instead of spending money on something else marketing related, we’re letting the brand speak for itself,” Penchev said. “The emphasis goes on Sandestin®, the name itself.” A name that has established 50 years of trust with its residents and visitors. “It’s just another way to show that the ownership and the resort leadership is reinvesting back into Sandestin® and increasing the value to our owners and guests,” Penchev said. “We’ve invested in the design of the labels, the quality of the product and the specific offerings to the guests who will consume them.” A favorite way owners and guests have been enjoying the new offerings is relaxing bayside around a bonfire at Marina Bar & Grill, but the Sandestin® signature beverages can be found across the resort at all Sandestin® dining venues. At Hotel Effie and Ovide, only the signature beers are

currently available, as the Sandestin® team is currently seeking an elevated luxury label to feature alongside the culinary elegance of the chefdriven dining venue. “I think it’s the perfect momentum to officially push the Sandestin® brand in its 50th year,” Penchev said. Penchev said that, eventually, the resort would like to work with their beverage partners to create exclusive, private-batch spirit labels for everything from bourbon to gin. But Penchev’s’s not eager to hit any deadlines. “Things will happen as we find the right product to live up to our name,” he said. “When we find the right product and the right partner.”

The picturesque town had long been the subject of conversation among Crum’s friends, as well as with her husband Brian’s boss who was a regular renter to the area. “It seemed like everyone had been to Seaside except us,” Crum said with a laugh. With two young children, they made their first trip to the area in 2008 after contacting Cottage Rental Agency (CRA), owned and operated by Sandestin® Investments LLC, to make reservations. “From the moment we stepped into the on-site welcome center to check in, we knew we had made the right decision,” Crum said. The CRA staff was incredibly friendly, the welcome gift and the beachy feel of the space set the tone for our whole vacation.” At the time, 7-year-old Jackson and 5-year-old Sophie instantly fell enamored. “They loved the beach, the music and kicking balls in Seaside’s main grassy area,” Crum said. “We love bike riding, so CRA’s complimentary bikes just added to the magic.” On their first visit, the Crums stayed in a cottage on the edge of the small town, but soon decided any future rental should be in the heart of the idyllic community. Their love of the area drew the family back for vacations one to two times a year for the next eight years. They continued renting through CRA because of the ease of booking, the positive interaction and the ability to rent in their desired location. “Our goal was to leave the car parked and walk everywhere,” Crum said, “that made it easy to enjoy the various food offerings of Airstream Row and favorite restaurants like the Pizza Bar, Great Southern Café and the Taco Bar.” In 2016, the Crums decided to purchase a home in Seaside and make it their permanent vacation destination. Crum used her knowledge as a Texas realtor to watch the market for potential properties in Seaside. “We weren’t sure how many bedrooms or how much space we needed,” she said. “We were preparing to vacation in

Seaside that year when a great house came on the market. It was a quick process from looking at the property until we made the purchase.” They bought a two-story coastal cottage on Forest Street close to the Seaside Chapel. With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, it felt a perfect fit for the Crum family. “We love it, because as owners, we can come more often,” Crum said. “Now, we travel to Seaside about seven or eight times a year, and everyone has enough room to stay with us.” When not using the property for her own visits, Crum takes advantage of her investment and rents to other visitors. New to owning a rental property, the standing relationship with CRA made the transition easy. Now, CRA handles the property management for Crum’s property. “CRA answers our questions promptly and is extremely proactive when

something needs to be taken care of,” she said. “During hurricane season, for example, notices are sent to guests and homeowners about potential bad weather and necessary action that might be needed. They ensure the home is protected, which makes us feel secure.” And when ready to visit for a stay at their property, CRA makes it easy. Crum simply emails the agency to block the desired dates. While in town, Crum and her family like to explore the surrounding 30A areas and enjoy a meal at Boragos in Grayton Beach. She finds no days are wasted in Seaside. “There is just so much here to love.”

n the picturesque town of Destin, a local family received devastating news — their 3-year-old daughter, Chloe, had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. When families confront such dire circumstances, it feels as though the world is collapsing around them. But in their darkest hour, a ray of hope emerged, thanks to the Sandestin® Foundation for Kids and the Make-AWish® Foundation. The Make-A-Wish® Foundation has always been dedicated to restoring hope to families, especially to the courageous young fighters enduring numerous hospital stays, medical procedures and limitations. Kathleen Hampton, director of development for Make-A-Wish Foundation’s Northwest Florida region, shared a powerful insight: “About 89% of medical professionals believe that a wish can have a positive influence on a child’s physical health. Just the knowledge that their wish will come true seems to give these young patients a renewed sense of purpose to fight their illness and look forward to their trip. These Wish experiences provide them a respite from their illness, giving them hope for the future.” 22

Chloe’s family, following their medical team’s guidance, reached out to MakeA-Wish® with a glimmer of hope. They dared to dream that Chloe’s greatest wish, to visit the magical world of Disney, could become a reality. “The majority of our wishes are Disney World trips because Disney World is a place that everyone wants to go,” Hampton said. “Make-A-Wish® has a strong partnership with Disney World, and they make special preparations for wish kids and families, providing VIP services and fun for the entire family.” In early March, Chloe’s wish blossomed into a fairy tale. Her family embarked on a journey to Disney’s parks, spending six enchanting days and five magical nights. Armed with parkhopper passes to Disney’s four parks, day passes to Universal Studios and Island of Adventure, and an unexpected surprise visit to Legoland, Chloe’s dream vacation became a reality. “Chloe’s family also went to Peppa Pig Theme Park within Legoland because that was something she was really interested in,” Said Rebecca Grusby, a Make-A-Wish® Foundation wish coordinator for Central and Northern

Florida. “Their family was amazing to work with, they were so kind. Her mom emailed me a ton of photos from the wish, they got matching t-shirts and looked like they had a really good time.” “We had the most amazing trip!” Chloe’s mother recalled with gratitude in an email sent to Make-A-Wish® Central and Northern Florida. “We managed to make it to all seven parks, and we also did a lot of activities at Disney World. We cannot thank you and the Wish Foundation enough. This was the trip of a lifetime that we will never forget! Thank you so much for everything!” Behind this heartwarming story of Chloe’s dream come true, the Sandestin® Foundation for Kids played a crucial role. Their unwavering support and dedication to helping children in need shone as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path toward brighter tomorrows for families like Chloe’s. ring the thermos of hot chocolate and gather ’round the beach bonfire for a Christmas story of love and legacy born right here at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort®. It’s 1984. Bruce Fults, a young and single Sandestin® Real Estate agent, was getting ready for a night of Christmas festivities at the highly anticipated Mistletoe Ball. The ball had been the talk of the town for weeks. Bruce didn’t have a date lined up, but decided to attend with some fellow bachelor friends — they were single and ready to mingle. The group entered the Linkside Conference Center and immediately, as if in a movie, their gaze was caught by an attractive blonde woman in a sequin dress. And, like in a movie, not a single member of the group knew who she was — a mystery woman. Bruce was interested. “I’m clearing the board,” he’d told his buddies, ensuring him the first chance to shoot his shot. Sherrie, the mystery woman, was working the Mistletoe Ball’s registration table. Little did Bruce know, she’d taken notice of him, too. Sherrie tasked a friend with chatting Bruce up until she could be relieved of her duties. Sherrie wanted to shoot her shot, too. Sherrie’s friend talked to Bruce for a while and then took him to meet her parents. “I knew her parents longer than I knew Sherrie!” Bruce recalled with a laugh. Meeting the parents so early on may have sweetened the pot for Sherrie who approached without a word and boldly took 24

dance, I’ll lead!” In that moment, physical attraction fell second as Bruce fell for Sherrie’s spirited nature. After talking and dancing the night away, the two exchanged phone numbers, each with the hope of reconnecting. In the days following, memories of the Mistletoe meet-cute faded amid the fog of a busy holiday season. New Year’s Eve rolled around and Bruce and Sherrie were set up on dates with others by well-meaning friends. But the two arrived at their parties only to find their dates had bailed. With that missed connection, the two found each other again, picking up right where they left off at Christmas. They soon fell into a relationship, Bruce sealing the deal when he brought Sherrie as his date to his sister’s wedding. Not long after, it was their own wedding as the topic of discussion. “We were here at Sandestin® and the Elephant Walk restaurant was our go-to spot,” Bruce recalled. “The story goes that after we discussed getting married several times prior, we had to ask each other at the same time.” Fate, destiny, serendipity — whatever the case, the happenstances of one holiday

season set the tone for a lifetime of happiness. Marriage suited the couple well and soon after, in 1989, they welcomed twin boys Tyler and Chase. Originally from Texas, Sherrie had long ago fallen in love with the pristine beaches and welcoming community found along the Emerald Coast. Always having maintained close ties with Sandestin® through work, the couple knew they would like to one day call Sandestin® home. As their boys grew up and went off to college, once again, timing aligned and Bruce and Sherrie brought their love story full circle. Now, the couple lives by the motto to live, work and play at Sandestin®. Bruce has become the longest tenured Sandestin® Real Estate Agent with 40 years at the brokerage. Sherrie is busy working on a children’s book and remains active on community boards and as head of Sandestin’s Bayou Village Decorating Committee. Plus, she finally got her dream car — a golf cart which she enjoys riding around the resort and through the tunnel across to the white sand beaches and emerald waters. The many amenities, events, restaurants, shops and tennis courts keep them both busy year-round. “We are very lucky to have an opportunity to enjoy everything Sandestin® has to offer!” Bruce said. For the Fults family, the Sandestin® lifestyle is the best way to live. With their adult sons now raising their own families, Bruce and Sherrie enjoy regular family visits, having their grandchildren down for family fun, beach days and pontoon boat outings. “We love making these precious memories together within the community we hold dear,” Bruce said. When the kids can’t visit, their three furry children, Tucker, Tilly and Toby, keep them busy with frequent walks around the 2,400 acres of lush landscape at Sandestin®. “We have three Westies and they adore it here just as much as we do,” Bruce said.

SANDESTIN® SERVED serendipitous once again for Bruce and Sherrie who found themselves mutually proposing over a dinner at the Elephant Walk restaurant. Marriage and twin sons Tyler and Chase soon followed.

“T

he spa business is truly my calling,” said Osa Mallo. Mallo is the new director of Spa Lilliana at Hotel Effie, a boutique luxury hotel at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort®, but she’s no industry novice. Mallo has seen 25 years in the spa and hospitality industries. Upon her appointment at Spa Lilliana, her high standards were readily apparent. “We feel so fortunate to have a spa director at Spa Lilliana with Osa’s experience,” said Tanya Rauch, director of marketing at Hotel Effie Sandestin®. A native of Sweden, Mallo attended hospitality school in Switzerland and 42

later received a bachelor's degree in hospitality from Florida International University. She spent her early career in food and beverage, but realized it wasn't the right fit. Soon after, she was offered an assistant spa director position at the Fontainebleau Hilton in Miami. “It was so unexpected,” Mallo said, “because my background is business, not therapy. But it was the best move because my passion is business and hospitality.” Mallo became spa director at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami a few years later, moving up the ranks to senior director of spa and wellness. While there, she and her team received

the highly distinguished Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star global rating for luxury spas for 12 consecutive years. Despite living and working in Miami, Mallo and her family often enjoyed vacationing in Northwest Florida. The family-friendly atmosphere was a selling point. In 2021, Mallo traded Miami’s busy beaches for the Emerald Coast’s welcoming shores. She spent some time working remotely on domestic and international spa and resort preopenings. But she soon began to miss the hands-on, face-to-face work of hospitality. She learned of the Spa Lilliana director position, and jumped at the chance.

Now, Mallo oversees the day-to-day operations at Spa Lilliana and its retail component alongside a staff of 24, including supervisors, spa concierges, a nail tech, estheticians and massage therapists. VIN’TIJ CELEBRATES 25 YEARS Grand Boulevard restaurant owner remains thankful to steadfast customer base

hen thinking about how to celebrate 25 years of business, Todd Reber, owner of Vin’tij Food & Wine, didn’t envision a grand party that focused on himself. Instead, he wanted to turn the thank you toward his loyal patrons. For 20 of those years, Vin’tij was tucked into a strip mall on Highway 98 in Miramar Beach. Still, its audience found it. In 2018, an opportunity to relocate to Grand Boulevard presented itself that Reber described as “striking the lottery of locations.” The steadfast supporters followed, and new fans were made with the increased visibility the Grand Boulevard location provided. “Seeing the same faces walking through the door after 25 years, and knowing how they like their food or what their preferred wine is, is an irreplaceable feeling as a restaurant owner,” Reber said. “Which is why, to thank them for all these years, I like to have personal interactions and acknowledgements of thanks — like sending out wine to toast with or a sampling of a dish they haven’t tried.” In addition, Reber’s focus on exceptional customer service for the past 25 years has prompted him to recently launch a new online ordering system with curbside pick-up from 11 a.m.–7 p.m. and a special delivery service to the Sandestin Resort. Reber utilizes trained staff members as delivery drivers to ensure his patrons receive good customer service and also prompt delivery of high-quality cuisine made by Chef Ignacio Bernal.

Reber’s wife, Sabrina, also works closely with Chef Ignacio to create thoughtfully prepared vegan and glutenfree dishes that are healthy, hearty and flavorful. Their vegan and gluten-free Lucky Bowl has become one of the most requested dishes on their menu. Abundant with a variety of roasted vegetables and seasoned quinoa rice, it is popular with vegans and meat eaters alike. They also work together to make sure they have allergy-friendly options on their seasonal holiday menus, private parties and wine dinners. Sabrina’s creative vegan and gluten-free desserts are also a must try! While guests to the restaurant keep it thriving, it’s the staff that keep the service exceptional, ensuring people return to repeat the experience. Reber credits his staff, including many who have been with the restaurant over 10 years, for exceeding customer expectations and making it a wonderful place to walk into each day for the past 25 years. Reber specifically credits Chef Ignacio Bernal for being his righthand man, creative counterpart and a driving reason as to why palettes are constantly pleased. Coinciding with the opening at Grand Boulevard, Bernal joined the Vin’tij team and quickly became Reber’s partnering Chef. Since 2018, he has diversified the menu’s flavor profiles and leaned further into supporting local farmers, food purveyors and Gulf Coast seafood providers.

“I grew up cooking and from a young age sought the freshest ingredients in my work,” Bernal said. “I appreciate that at Vin’tij, I’m encouraged to have freedom and creativity to change the menu seasonally, based on the freshest offerings.” Being a restaurant that focuses heavily on wine, Bernal and Reber can promise that the menu offerings are paired with intention to the impressive wine list. Reber has long held an interest in the mingling of food and wine, having worked in the culinary industry for over 35 years. His restaurant roster includes notable names such as the Governors Club in Tallahassee and Bud & Alley’s in Seaside. It was at the wine and food pairing meetings at Bud & Alley’s that Reber first realized wine was not a separate component, rather an intricate complement to the meal. This sentiment has carried him through the years as he guides patrons through the food menu, selects their perfect pours and watches their faces alight as they realize he was exactly right.
