What’s trending in dresses and accessories

When you choose WaterColor Inn & Resorts for your wedding, rehearsal dinner or anniversary, it will be more than just the scenery that will inspire you.

First Comes Falling in Love, Then Comes Growing in It

I recently realized that I have not attended or been invited to a wedding in over a year. My life has transitioned to attending housewarming parties, sending congratulatory flowers for work promotions and scrolling social media feeds brimming with pregnancy announcements. While I couldn’t be more grateful that my friends are growing their successes and their families, I really want to attend a wedding.

I thrive in a wedding setting. Being reconnected with old friends and getting to know the people I haven’t met but have so often heard about that shaped a friend’s life. The anticipation of the reveal of the bride’s dress. Tearing up at the couple’s reaction to seeing one another down the aisle. Tearing up again when they read their vows.

At the reception, I note every detail — the flowers, the decor, the meal served, the cocktails selected, the music the band plays. I’m no stranger to the dance floor and dread the last song of the night.

My own wedding day was the most fun I’ve ever had. It was also a day filled with peace and joy. It somehow went off without a single hitch, though I had mentally prepared mysel for many.

I wouldn’t change a thing about it — and yet … I find myself daydreaming about color palettes. I see beautiful flowers and think how they would look in a bouquet. Every bridal fashion week, I envision myself in the latest styles. Mostly, I want that feeling again — being all encompassed by love shed upon us by so many that we in turn love.

In many ways, I have the ideal job for me — a role that allows me to witness weddings. While I may not be in the audience of a ceremony or on the dance floor of a reception, I find myself swooning over the details of Northwest Florida Weddings Magazine’s featured brides and getting goosebumps when they share with me the most cherished moments of their wedding day.

For me, love looks different now and I’m learning that’s a good thing, a healthy one. We planned the wedding. We said the vows in front of our loved ones. That was, and is, love.

Now, love is doing a chore to make the other’s life easier. It’s running errands and picking up the treat they like just to make them happy. It’s choosing not to let the heartbreak and the hard moments of life break you down, but instead build your marriage stronger. It’s placing your partner’s hand on your stomach, watching them feel your baby kick and realizing this is the love you always hoped you would feel.

The wedding invitations arriving in my mailbox may slow and cease, but I take comfort in knowing love continues to grow, to satiate, to deepen.

All my best,

SARAH & PAUL

What was your favorite part of your wedding day?

“Our ceremony was very personal to us. Our venue felt intimate, and both of our families were involved. My father walked me down the aisle and even officiated! And I’ll never forget the look on my husband’s face when we saw each other.”

“Walking down the aisle to Jon, I was so nervous at first. When I walked out and I could hear our song playing, ‘A Thousand Years,’ I turned the corner and saw Jon, my nerves melted away. He reached out his hand to help me up the stairs. I’ll never forget that moment — it was not only the way he looked at me but his strong hand was saying, ‘I got you,’ as he grabbed mine without saying a word.”

“Besides being surrounded by loved ones, the most special moment was doing a first look where we read letters we had written to one another. It was a moment to reflect and a reminder that the day’s purpose was our commitment to love.”

“The most special moment of our wedding day was hearing the speeches from our friends and family. We had a large wedding party and had four speeches that all somehow managed to evoke both laughter and tears from not only my husband and I, but our guests as well. It was a great representation of our day and us as a couple — sweet and sentimental at times, but mostly just fun and upbeat.”

“The first look! After months of planning and anticipation, we chose to share this intimate moment together before the ceremony. All the stress from planning, worries about the weather and uncertainties about how the day would unfold melted away when I saw my husband. The day had finally arrived, and we were able to share this special moment, just the two of us.”

Cover shoot showcases the benefits of a Northwest Florida wedding

Photos by Rachel Wainwright Photography

The day was flawless. The sky was without a cloud in sight as our stunning cover bride Savannah Burden looked wedding-day perfect while effortlessly posing around WaterColor Inn & Resort’s property.

Northwest Florida Wedding Magazine’s 11th-issue cover shoot went without a hitch as Savannah got to play dress up ahead of her own big day coming up in June 2025.

“I was born and raised in Santa Rosa Beach. So, to be on the cover of a magazine showcasing my hometown is so much fun,” said Savannah.

It was in Santa Rosa Beach that Savannah met her fiance Kaden Smith. During their high school years, they

were neighbors and attended the same school. At the time, they were just friends, but they’d always had a crush on each other. A few years after high school, they admitted this to one another and became a couple.

In 2023, after a dinner date, Kaden asked Savannah if she wanted to stop by and say hi to his parents at their clubhouse on the bay. When they arrived, candles lit the clubhouse, softly illuminating the beautiful bay view as Kaden got down on one knee and asked Savannah to marry him.

After an almost two-year engagement, the couple will have a destination wedding in Northern Italy on June 21, 2025. This has long been a dream of theirs; they love to travel

The wide open green space and the lush trees of Cerulean Park in WaterColor make for a whimsical, magical setting. Savannah’s drop-waist dress adds to the romance. PHOTOS

and wanted an intimate wedding with only their closest family and friends.

“The style of our wedding is very romantic and classic,” said Savannah. “I tend to favor a style that is more timeless rather than modern. The natural scenery and Italian architecture at our wedding venue is my favorite part.”

Savannah urges couples to enjoy the bliss of the engagement period and to hire an experienced planner to make your vision come to fruition.

In advance of her own wedding, Savannah got to have a trial run, getting dressed and dolled up by top Northwest Florida vendors.

Before the shoot, Savannah attended a dress fitting at Margaret Ellen Bridal where she tried on dresses that will be trending in 2025 including drop-waists, corset-style tops, delicate lace and feminine details such as bow belts and pearls.

Each dress was expertly paired with designer jewelry from McCaskill & Company. Silver, gold and diamond statement pieces adorned the bride-to-be.

Brittany Sigler, owner o Destin Mobile Makeup Box, styled Savannah’s hair with voluminous waves and sideswept bangs. For makeup, she created a fresh-faced, golden, sun-kissed vibe. All equated to a classic, romantic Florida look.

Savannah held a beautiful bouquet, styled by Beachy Blooms 30A, of white, pale yellow and greenery. The orchids with their buttery hue and lavender centers added a fun, tropical note to a bouquet of local wild flowers.

The talented Rachel Wainwright was behind the lens expertly guiding Savannah to the most scenic spots on WaterColor Inn & Resort’s property, from the iconic bridge overlooking the lake to green spaces that highlight natural flora and fauna of the region.

This year’s cover exudes the classic elegance and natural beauty of a coastal-luxury wedding that only the Northwest Florida region provides. ▪

“A few factors led to us choosing Hilton Sandestin as our wedding venue. Early in our relationship, we would vacation in the Destin area and when we got engaged, we knew that we wanted to share this special location with our guests. We also wanted to ensure our wedding guests had an elevated experience right on the beach, and Hilton Sandestin fit that to a tee.

“Planning a three-day South Asian wedding with five events is no easy feat, and we were fortunate to have chosen a venue that was able to accommodate our needs and make the planning process easy. Thanks to the on-site wedding team at Hilton Sandestin working so closely with our wedding planner, every detail was carefully thought out and executed perfectly.”

“The staff at Sandestin are so professional and always willing to help. Weddings can be very stressful, and they understand that and show it by making sure everything is taken care of. Staff members took the time to set up a private moment for us during cocktail hour where we could enjoy a drink and some hors d’oeuvres and take in that we were actually married! We really appreciated that moment.

“We would recommend Sandestin to other couples because of the beautiful property and the amazing service! We love that our guests were able to make a mini vacation out of our wedding, whether it was enjoying the beach, a round of golf, shopping on Grand Boulevard or taking their family to Baytowne Wharf.” — Malia Kubach, Nashville, Tennessee

Beach It for Your Bachelorette or Bachelor Party

Northwest Florida gains popularity as a top celebration spot

Imagine it — you and your best friends begin the day with a beach yoga session that leads to a cocktail-making class by the pool, followed by dinner and drinks on the town and ending with s’mores during a beachside bonfire. Or, begin the day with a round of golf on some of Florida’s best greens, have lunch provided by an in-home hibachi chef and enjoy a nighttime pool party complete with craft cocktails and a cigar bar.

Cities like Nashville and Las Vegas have long been on the list of most

popular bachelor and bachelorette destinations. Recently, Northwest Florida cities have joined the ranks in popularity offering many assets that other locales don’t — sunshine and some of the country’s most pristine beaches.

“Beyond our stunning beaches, the area boasts charming, eclectic and diverse beach towns brimming with personality,” said Hollie Jones, founder and owner of 30A Beach Girls, a vacation rental company providing bachelorette and bachelor experiences. “Add to that the allure

There’s no need to leave your beautiful beach house rental when a plethora of service providers from mobile cigar bars to yoga instructors to in-home chefs can come to you.

of top-notch dining options, beautiful boutiques, the absence of overcrowding and a sense of safety, cleanliness and freshness, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for an unforgettable celebration.”

Many companies like 30A Beach Girls were created to help couples plan their celebration by working alongside local vendors and service providers. With many brides or grooms coming from all over the United States, enlisting the help of a planner makes the process a breeze.

Planners can handle everything from decorating, arranging accommodations and transportation to hiring vendors and making itineraries.

“We collect as much detail as we can, ask for inspiration and stay in communication with clients throughout the entire booking process,” said Nicole Mathews, owner of The Bach Babe 30A. “Color palettes, themes and interests are all shared. Once we receive all the details, the magic happens as we get creative and work with other businesses to make all their dreams come true.”

Whether you want a laid-back weekend focused on relaxation and wellness

or a party atmosphere, planning services can call upon local vendors to customize your experience.

Options could include in-home chefs, picnic planning, cooking classes, bonfires, yacht and boat rentals, limo services, beach yoga, custom gift bags, bouquet making, candle making, restaurant and activity reservations and more.

Some of the most requested experiences are personalized bartending services and cocktail classes, which two local companies, Better Together Beverage and Tipsy Mule, provide.

For an interactive experience, cocktail classes allow the party to follow along and concoct delicious libations.

“Cocktail crafting workshops provide delicious and fun cocktails not found on most menus and use fresh ingredients and garnishes,” said Eliana Ciao, owner of Tipsy Mule Bar. “I tell couples that making a good drink is a valuable skill to have for a successful marriage.”

If you’re seeking a service experience, The Tipsy Mule mobile cart can easily be brought to your residence, or a mobile

bar could be set up poolside to serve up your preferred cocktails in anything from Champagne in coupe glasses to drinks funneled from plastic flamingos.

“Our customized bar menus are a big hit,” said Christine Tarpey, beverage curator at Better Together Beverage. “We make sure that our cocktail garnishes, menus, decor, attire, you name it, all match, which takes a little of the planning stress off of the bride and the bridal party.”

These beverage vendors have been known to team up with the likes of inhome chefs such as Mr. Hibachi or pair for interactive experiences like painting parties with Maxine Orange.

Vacation rental companies can help you secure a home in the area that best fits your needs whether that be beach access or walkability to downtown dining or shopping. Hotels or resorts are great options for those who want access to pools, private beaches, on-site restaurants and spa services.

Being in proximity to the best beaches, you’ll want to plan a beach day, book a captain for a boat rental, plan a fishing trip, take a sunset cruise on a sailboat or rent water gear such as paddleboards or kayaks.

The allure of a Northwest Florida bachelor or bachelorette party is it can be taken at your own pace with a plethora of vendors and a guaranteed beautiful backdrop. ▪

A guide to keeping your hair and makeup pristine

There’s no denying the appeal of a beachside wedding. But as with any outdoor event in Florida, weather should be a top consideration, especially where beauty is involved.

While Northwest Florida often offers more temperate conditions than the rest of the state, there’s no denying the heat lasting from late spring through early fall. Furthering the problem for hair and makeup is humidity. And while an ocean breeze can offer a welcome relief, it might create a windblown hairstyle you weren’t asking for.

If your lip look is bold, be sure your shade is never far from reach for touchups. Natural, sun-kissed makeup and a slicked back bun are a beach bride’s best friends.

These factors shouldn’t dissuade you from your long-desired beach nuptials. You may not be able to predict the weather, but you can take preventative measures.

When selecting a hairstylist and makeup artist, seek someone with experience servicing clientele at outdoor or beach weddings. They will know the tips and tricks to make your desired look last.

Brittany Sigler, owner of Destin Mobile Makeup Box, and her team offer hair and makeup services for brides and bridal parties. She begins with a face primer that helps bond foundation to the skin. Sigler recommends airbrushed, silicone-based foundation or a high-end liquid makeup, depending on your preference, because these provide the longest wear. She finishes each look with a setting powder and setting spray for added longevity.

The best style to ensure hair stays put is an updo. Sigler loves the versatility of an elegant ponytail because the same style can be both slicked back or brought forward to the shoulder.

If the bride envisions her hair down, half-up-half-down or a tuck behind the ears can offer some stability against the weather. To ensure curls set and stay, Sigler sets her wand to a high heat and then pins the curls. Once the curls have cooled, she lets them fall, resulting in more bounce and longevity.

Whether up, down or somewhere in between, an anti-humidity spray and highhold hair spray should be on standby. Men may not have to worry about makeup, but to keep their hair looking coiffed, try an extra-firm hold gel or hair spray.

“Make sure you’re getting ready in a wellair-conditioned space, and you stay inside as much as possible before the ceremony to preserve the look,” said Sigler.

If possible, Sigler suggests doing first looks and photos indoors so your bridal beauty isn’t exposed to the elements before the ceremony. For touch-ups, keep a kit with hair spray, oil blotters, your lip color and any other beauty essentials you might need.

During the day, it’s wise to have a bridesmaid on lookout duty to tame any frizz or have lipstick on standby for a touch-up.

If you’re seeking a look that’s sure to stay from welcome party to honeymoon, Amazing Lash Studio offers eyelash extensions, lash lifts, brow tints and brow lamination at locations in Destin, Panama City Beach and Pensacola.

“Lash extensions definitely stay through the happy tears and the outdoor elements and will not run like mascara does,” said Mary-Frances Mullins, owner of Amazing Lash Studio.

As a result of being applied individually by a licensed professional, they will not come off as a whole unit like strip lashes or in clumps like cluster lashes can when exposed to tears, wind or weather.

Remember, plan ahead where you can, but don’t let minor inconveniences like frizz and lipstick detract from the perfection of your big day. ▪

Let your bridesmaids look and feel their best by selecting their own hairstyle whether a fishtail braid, a bouncy ponytail or breezy half-up-half-down.

Dressed All Up

ODresses and bridal accessories decoded

ne of the most anticipated moments in wedding planning is nding the dress. If you’re planning a wedding, you’re likely ooded with so many beautiful dress options that it can be hard to decide.

To help you nd the best dress, consult those who are surrounded by dresses daily and can instruct on the current styles. The sta of Margaret Ellen Bridal in Santa Rosa Beach and Baytowne Bridal in Panama City Beach shared what’s trending in 2024 and 2025.

Accentuated waistlines are having a moment. Drop waists, basque waists and peplum accentuated waists made their way from runways to bridal stores. Paired with a corseted top or sweetheart neckline, this look is particularly romantic.

“In 2025, we can expect to see the drop waist making a comeback, as well as timeless but high-fashion designs that include having visible boning on the bodice or ruching on waistlines,” said Natalie Lambeth, buyer and bride experience manager at Baytowne Bridal. Leg slits and pu y sleeves hint at an ’80s vibe with subtle drama.

The girlhood aesthetic of hyper-feminine motifs continues on in bridal fashion most notably in the presence of bows and oral accents.

Picture an open-back dress dipping at the waist into a perfectly tied bow, a sweet line of bows down the train or a velvet bow tied at the waist. Florals take form in tulle

rosettes at the bustline or intricate oral appliques woven into a bouquet on the skirt or along the edges of a veil.

A trend that’s remained strong and shows no signs of going anywhere is convertible dresses. This allows the bride to play dress up all day long.

“For brides wanting multiple looks without spending money on multiple dresses, there are many accessories that can be added to a gown,” said Maggie Matthews, owner of Margaret Ellen Bridal. “We love playing around with gloves, sleeves, capes, toppers and overskirts to achieve a versatile look.”

looks in one, including a tted dress, overskirt and sleeves, all for one price. Both stores expressed that most dresses can be tailored for additions, whether it be an overskirt, a train extender or sleeves.

Adding or subtracting from a dress is easier than changing into multiple out ts while still achieving varied looks that carry you from ceremony to reception to after party.

Where the dress may be the main attraction, bridal accessories are big statement makers. Neck scarves are the ultimate cool girl accessory. A gauzy fabric draped around the neck or trailing down the back is e ortlessly chic. For a touch of Old Hollywood glamor, consider a pair of white satin or pearl-trimmed gloves.

Tie the look together with a bowaccented updo or headpiece. You can play with a pop of color by adding a colorful veil or one with colorful accents. Soft blues, pinks and purples are whimsical and feminine.

Many of the trends are all about the wow factor, but what’s sure to stun is timeless beauty.

“Simple, classic, Chantilly lace and satin gowns are always going to be in style,” Matthews said.

Lambeth echoes the timeless sentiment, adding that brides can complement with trendy accessories.

“Of course, we see things that will modernize the dress in its own way to match the times,” Lambeth said, “but having a look that is timeless and classic will always be a trend.”

Classic, modern or somewhere in between, what matters most is that you feel comfortable, con dent and beautiful in your dress. On your wedding day and while looking back at your wedding album years from now, you’ll appreciate that you love the look you’re in. ▪

SHORT AND SWEET

While not necessarily new, a trend with staying power is the little white mini dress for the reception or after-party look. It’s easy, it’s breezy and it screams, “I’m here for the party!” Complete the look with sneakers for an outfit that’s both comfortable and stylish. Many brides invest in a designer pair or have them customized with their new monogram or a message special to the day.

Ballet-core, the Victorian era and Old Hollywood glamour are accessory trends that can be expressed with tulle accents, fingerless gloves, added sleeves and pearl detailing.

Preserve your wedding by investing in quality photography with tips from local wedding photographers

Long after the vows have been exchanged, the party is over and all the guests have gone home, what remains of your wedding, alongside the memories, are photos. With that in mind, hiring a quality photographer is one of the most important investments you can make for your big day.

There can be a lot of pressure on couples to look perfect and pose well; however, a good photographer will put their subjects at ease, allowing them to shine.

To ensure that a photographer is a good t for you, it’s important to meet with them beforehand to see if your personalities mesh.

Before the big day, many photographers will send over questionnaires to learn more about your love story, the people who will be in your photos and any particular moments you might want captured. Additionally, you might compose or provide a shot list.

“Keep the family shot list short and simple, if possible,” said Alicia Osborne, a Tallahassee-based wedding photographer. “I advise couples to let their photographer know if there are sensitive or awkward family dynamics. We are ready for all the basic wedding happenings, but make sure to list any ‘out of the norm’ things planned, so we are ready for those, too.”

In getting to know you, photographers will also want to know what you want captured. Some couples want portrait-style photos with the family and wedding party to be the priority. Others want to ensure they are actively interacting with guests while having images taken, so documentary-style photos are more suitable.

De ning these desires, along with a schedule of the wedding day’s events, can help a photographer best plan their course of action.

If you feel uneasy about posing or being in front of the camera, remember that couples are rarely models; an experienced photographer will guide you.

“Every couple is unique, so we tailor our approach to t their personality more than anything,” said Sarah Schmidt, an Emerald Coast-based wedding photographer with Sarah & Paul Photography. “We work with their strengths to ensure the poses feel natural and authentic. When our clients are at ease and present in their day, we get

to capture the candid moments that re ect their personalities best.”

Where there are the traditional, portraitstyle photos where the intent is to look at the camera, many photographers rely on movement and prompts to get their best and most natural shots.

This could include walking and talking together, dancing, laughing, kissing, looking into each other’s eyes, getting cozy and more. The photographer may also advise holding a pose, so they can capture it from di erent angles, or suggest you move your head or body in another way to vary the end product.

“I tend to give my clients direction, rather than posing by giving them an action to do,” said Rachel Wainwright, an Emerald Coast-based wedding photographer. "I remind them that the goal is to capture their true, authentic selves during the session and the most important thing is for them to have fun! This leads to a more natural interaction during our session and can help them to feel more comfortable.”

Before booking a photographer, take a look at their past work to gauge their style and gain inspiration for your own day. To feel even more camera-ready, consider booking an engagement shoot.

It’s important to remember that an experienced photographer is innately acquainted with what makes for a good photo and will make you feel comfortable in front of their lens. Relax, enjoy yourself, enjoy your day and maybe even end up with a new friend behind the lens. ▪

There’s just something about film photography that summons nostalgia. Film photography is making a comeback for its attention to the small, but meaningful, details.

Flavors TRENDING

Create a wedding day menu with your tastes in mind

Thanks to social media, trend cycles are shorter than ever. What’s “in” now may be considered passé in months or weeks, and there’s no shortage of fads to participate in.

Those planning a wedding know trends affect every part of the process, from hair and makeup to floral arrangements and decor. Even dinner and cocktail menus are affected, though SunQuest Beach Weddings’ Kristi Oliver encourages couples to think about “what makes sense to them” as opposed to social media algorithms when creating their wedding menu.

“When I’m scrolling through TikTok or Instagram and see something go viral, I know I’ll have a bride ask about it,” Oliver said, adding: “But don’t just do a champagne tower because you’ve seen it on Instagram a million times. Let’s think of different ways to do it that feel true to your love story.”

The goal isn’t to buck trends, though you certainly can if you want to, but rather, it’s finding creative ways to rework trends so they meet your tastes, desires and needs.

Say you love the idea of a drink tower but dislike champagne. You can try a margarita or espresso martini tower — whatever cocktail you and your partner love most.

“We actually worked a wedding recently where the bride and groom walked around with champagne guns,” Oliver said. “That was definitely one way to liven up the dance floor.”

Fortunately, many of the catering trends currently dominating the wedding space are customizable. For example, “build-it-yoursel” food bars can be as intricate or casual as you prefer and feature almost any type of cuisine.

Oliver says shrimp and grits bars have been popular on the Emerald Coast, but they’ve also

Northwest Florida takes pride in its fresh, local seafood, making low country boils and Gulf oysters popular fare at wedding events.

created bars centered around mac and cheese, tacos and deviled eggs. Dessert bars have also increased in appearance at receptions.

“A lot of our couples aren’t cake people, but they love key lime pie or cheesecake,” Oliver said. “So, they’ll get a small wedding cake for the photos and cake-cutting ceremony, and then have a dessert bar or chocolate fountain available for guests to snack on.”

Oliver has noticed couples opting to serve foods that honor their cultural backgrounds and relationship histories — an exciting trend that allows newlyweds to serve up a great story along with their meal.

“We’ve been doing a lot of Korean barbecue and food with Asian or Hispanic influence and foods that remind couples of their first dates,” Oliver said. “It’s been really fun.”

Traditional dinner service is being rethought in exchange for chef-attended stations, which gets the party started sooner, allowing guests to get up and mingle rather than stay seated for two hours Oliver explained.

Experiential dining offers something truly unique. The idea of experiential dining is to expand beyond the traditional experience of simply consuming food and transcend into a memorable moment.

“We just had an event with a roaming oyster shucker, and that was fun, especially for guests who’ve never had an oyster before,” Oliver said. “We also have a rehearsal dinner coming up where they’re doing paella. It’s going to be really fun for the guests to watch the chef prepare that.”

No matter what trends may be in style at the moment, your wedding is all about you and your partner — take what you like, leave what you don’t and create a wedding menu that you’ll enjoy. After all, you’re the one going home with all the leftovers. ▪

Tell your own story through the foods you serve. Oliver has noted an increase in couples that honor their cultural backgrounds and heritage through food such as paella.

Florals THE YOU Fancy

Questions to ask your florist

Envision your wedding florals. Are they sleek and traditional or wild and wispy? Roses and carnations or scabiosas and snapdragons? Minimalistic and neutral or bright and bold? The options are seemingly endless, so working with a florist whose aesthetic aligns with your event and is capable of delivering a design that represents your vision is key.

Florals are one of the most customizable aspects of your big day and are also the second-most photographed part of a wedding, just behind you and your significant other.

Whether you already have a florist or are still searching, we have compiled a collection of questions you can ask to ensure you’re receiving the blooms of your dreams.

Some questions you should ask your florist include: Are they familiar with your venue? What time will they be

delivering the flowers? Is there a charge for delivery, setup and breakdown? Are they available to remain on-site to move any ceremony florals to the reception site? What do they provide as far as vases and other decor items?

Simply getting to know your florist through asking questions can help garner a level of trust between the two of you.

While most florists display their work on their social media pages and websites, it may be helpful to ask your florist for a portfolio. Some floral pros even offer a sample bouquet for an additional fee.

Chelsea Finch, wedding specialist, with A Country Rose Florist in Tallahassee, supplies a portfolio and mock-ups at the bride’s request. Finch likes to provide examples of floral choices she might use for a wedding.

“There is a lot of trust that happens between a couple and a florist since

there can be so much variety in flowers,” Finch said. “When I provide a list of suggested blooms, I always communicate the chance for substitutions and discuss what their preferences are.”

Finch recommends choosing a florist you trust.

“Sometimes, Mother Nature chooses things for us, like a blush variety blooming more pink,” said Finch. “These little details change the look, and a florist you trust will make the call to either replace that bloom with something else or decide if it will work within the color palette.”

Kristi Oliver, director of sales and marketing with SunQuest Beach Weddings in Destin, aims to get to know couples on a personal level.

“Knowing details and tidbits from their life together helps us know what direction we’re going in to create a design that is uniquely them,” said Oliver.

Similar to how your florist will simply want to get to know you and your partner, you too, should get to know your florist.

Ask your florist how long they have been in the industry, how they would describe their style, what their favorite part of a wedding day is,

10 Most Popular Wedding Flowers

ROSES Some of the most used wedding roses are standard roses for a classic, sleek look. Consider garden roses for a more wild, picked-from-the-roadside look and spray roses for a delicate, whimsical filler.

RANUNCULUS Available in a huge variety of colors, ranunculus are the perfect accent flower to add some movement to your bouquet with their dainty round petals and wiggly stems.

PEONIES With their steep price tag and extremely short spring season (available between May and June) peonies are best to be reserved for the bride’s bouquet and head table arrangement where they will receive the recognition they deserve.

ANEMONES These dainty, tissuey flowers are a great way to add unique, bold details to any bouquet or centerpiece. Anemones come in a variety of bold reds, pinks and purples but the most common variety used for weddings come in a classic white with a deep navy, almost black center.

SNAPDRAGONS Snapdragons are the perfect way to add some dimension to a large arbor arrangement or provide structure to a colorful bride’s bouquet. With their long stem lined with ombre blooms, snapdragons offer a unique appearance.

CARNATIONS On their own, they may not have the same “wow factor” as other flower varieties, but add them to a centerpiece and you instantly have a fuller, more vibrant arrangement.

TULIPS Fringed tulips, double tulips, Rembrandt tulips, parrot tulips and star tulips are just a few of the 3,000 varieties of tulips out there. By gently bending and flipping flower petals backwards and outwards, a tulip can be transformed from its classic closed look, to an open, exotic-looking bloom.

HYDRANGEAS With their sizable, showy blooms that come in a variety of pastels and muted or “dusty” colors, hydrangeas are perfect for archway arrangements and larger centerpieces.

DAHLIAS If you want a flower that leaves a lasting impact, dahlias are the one for you. With some varieties, such as dinner plate dahlias, growing to be the size of a literal dinner plate, they bring a grand presence to any event.

ANTHURIUM With their eye-catching colors and clean lines, anthurium adds a vibrant, modern look to any bouquet. The best part? They thrive in humid climates. Florida brides rejoice!

what their favorite floral trend is and if they have any advice for you.

“As your wedding florist, we aim to exceed your expectations. Having trust in your wedding pros to do what they do best allows them to do their best work,” said Oliver.

Slightly less fun than selecting blooms, but equally as important, is your floral budget. Ask your florist if they require a minimum, if they have any recommendations that fit your budget, if they provide itemized proposals and receipts and when the deposit and final payment are due.

Factors such as time of year, guest count, travel, arrangement size and flower type will affect your total, but most florists will gladly work to make your vision come true. There are usually substitutions to accommodate a couple’s financial plan without sacrificing the look they have in mind.

“Maybe they are requesting dahlias which have limited availability and are a higher price-point flower. I would recommend using a football mum which has a similar look at a fraction of the cost,” said Finch.

Oliver recommends mixing and matching centerpieces to maximize a floral budget. By having some tall, lush arrangements along with some smaller, more delicate arrangements, you’re saving money and creating a dynamic tablescape.

Flowers should serve as a complement to your big day, so let them reflect your personal style. Oliver notes that it’s okay to use photos of other weddings for inspiration, but your special day should embody you as a couple.

You don’t have to be completely sure of the style you want or have every detail planned to meet with a florist. Simply trust the professionals and your new floral friend. ▪

The ombre look isn’t just for hair. Florists have fun selecting florals that span a color palette from light to dark creating a modern, monochromatic look.
Utilize color to convey your theme. Vibrant bouquets featuring anthurium, peonies, ranunculus, palm leaves and other foliage create a trendy, tropical vibe.

Elevated Entertainment

Splurge a little — you and your guests deserve it

According to industry expert Troy Rentz, the top three ways to entertain your guests are food, beverage and music. Rentz, chief operations officer at John Gandy Events in Tallahassee, notes that the guests deserve a little splurging to create a truly elevated experience.

“You want them to have a really good time,” he said. “And you want them to continue talking about your wedding for a long time.”

Rentz suggests imagining food as more than catered meals and moving beyond beer and wine for beverage bars.

He said food trucks are fun for late-night bites, but they shouldn’t serve as your main course. Couples can offer a late-night snack option, an ice cream cart or a martini bar with specialty cocktails customizable to the newlyweds or wedding theme.

Emerald Coast-based Better Together Beverage custom curates cocktails to the bride and groom’s vision, creating a boutique beverage experience for the cocktail hour and reception. Everything from the printed menu to the garnish is personalized to the couple and theme. Drinks can come out smoking or with edible flowers and glitter for some pizazz.

Too, the bar service specializes in mocktails, a request recently popularized to cater to guests of all ages and preferences. Better Together Beverage typically offers at least one mocktail option on each curated menu.

If you’re looking to treat your guests to some good song and dance, prioritize live music.

Rentz said live instrumentals — string trios, saxophone or harp — are scene setting for ceremonies, and trumpets are great for processionals.

For the ceremony, Rentz has enjoyed working with fusion bands, like the Miami-based Rock With U, which combines a live DJ set with a live band.

Put your day to paper as a forever memory by utilizing the services of a live painter such as Maxine Orange or hiring a photo booth company complete with fun props and backdrops.

“It is a really fun party environment,” Rentz said. “You really get the best of both worlds with that.”

Emerald Coast-based band Stormfolk Music creates its own fusion of folk, bluegrass, rock and pop. The trio, Mick Grocholl, Kaylyn Hastings and Preston Czygan, combines guitar, violin, percussion and vocals to create a unique sound. The band services areas from Pensacola to Tallahassee and offers violin or piano for ceremonies and the full band for cocktail hour and receptions.

Beyond the top three, keepsakes and interactive entertainment will impress your guests.

Photo booths are perfect for entertaining a lively reception celebration. Packages often come with a backdrop, themed props and single or three-shot mini prints. Walton County’s Lily Photo Bus brings its vintage VW bus on-site, decked out in themed decor for unique, interactive shots.

“One of my favorite things is a really pretty, classic black-andwhite photo booth,” Rentz said. He recommends the traveling national brand, MirMir, whose sleek and elegant photo booths come in black and white with the option for classic, wide or portraitsized prints.

Live paintings offer guests a unique keepsake. Tallahassee-based Works of Harte owner and artist Alison Fairbrother paints live portraits on-site, creating memorable favors for your guests to take home the day of your event. Live portraits are done in watercolor on 5-by-7-inch coldpress paper and completed within five to 15 minutes for guests to take with them.

Larger form, live paintings of the bride and groom can be entertaining for all and create a meaningful memento for the couple. Fairbrother and Emerald Coast area artist Maxine Orange craft livescene paintings of moments, including the ceremony, first dance and first kiss. Orange’s portraits can be as large as 36by-48 inches in acrylic paint. Fairbrother offers a watercolor option.

To truly wow your crowd, consider a fireworks display. You can make moments like your cake cutting sparkle, your first dance shine or enhance the drama of your grand departure.

Pyro Shows Inc. services areas throughout the Southeast and beyond, specializing in professional fireworks displays, special effects and aerial shows. Displays can be customized for day or night, personalized by color and pattern and choreographed to music.

When planning for fireworks displays and other large-scale entertainment, budget and weather should be top of mind, but it’s most important to consider location. Rentz recommends always confirming with the venue if your desired setup is achievable.

Depending on location, certain state and local parameters must be adhered to, permitting and contracts may be required and space will determine the scale of your entertainment.

When in doubt, consult your planner to help you handle the details. They’re there to help make your dream day come true and leave your guests with cherished memories. ▪

Start and end the reception with sparkle and sound. A sensory experience of music and color is sure to make a lasting impression on guests.
