Shifting Our Pace Our coast enjoys the low key energy of cooler months

We welcome the let up of high heat and a slower pace as the liveliness of vacationers thins out. With the fall and winter months, we find a new energy along the coastal communities, and events shift. One of the most delightful aspects of this time of year is the plethora of exceptional events. The seventh annual Harvest Wine & Food Festival, hosted by the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation and held in WaterColor, offers a captivating blend of exceptional wines, delectable dishes and an ambiance that perfectly captures the essence of autumn on the Emerald Coast. Also, just around the corner is the popular Crafted festival in Alys Beach, hosted by the Cultural Arts Alliance, a unique festival that stands as a tribute to the harmonious convergence of talents that enhance the vibrant tapestry of 30A. Not to forget, as Christmas approaches, we look forward with excitement to shopping and feasting amidst the twinkling lights that illuminate our seaside communities, with Seaside and Rosemary Beach transformed into truly idyllic holiday towns full of Christmas cheer. In January, music covers the town when the 30A Songwriters Festival livens the local venues and we are immersed in the songs of truly incredible musical talents.

Handcrafted

With Heart

A longtime local shares his story and talent BY ANNIE LOCKAMY | PHOTOS BY DAWN CHAPMAN WHITTY AND CULTURAL ARTS ALLIANCE

“Be here, now.” — James Foley ON A SPRAWLING 2.5 ACRES near the bay in Point Washington, Florida, I sat catching up with a wonderfully talented friend who is dear to me and so many others — Mr. James Foley.

This beloved Floridian goes by many names. I just call him “Foley.” My husband refers to him as “Mr. Foley.” You also might even hear “Jim,” “Jimmy” or simply “Foles.” He and his wife, Colleen, have lived in their beautiful home tucked away among the Point Washington pines for 40 years. Their

sons, Jack and Michael, along with their grandchildren, live close by. Born in Washington, D.C., Foley enjoys talking politics with a variety of folks. An avid reader, he finishes as many as three books a week on fascinating subjects. Here, most know Foley for his handcrafted furniture designs. His pieces can be found throughout South Walton homes and businesses. At a very young age Foley and his family spent summers along the Emerald Coast. His mother was from Selma, Alabama, making it an easy three-hour drive to visit our coast. Here, he found his love for surfing in our Gulf waters. Foley’s hunger for adventure eventually led him on a quest for bigger waves, propelling him toward the distant shores of Hawaii. He studied at the University of Hawaii and surfed the North Shore of Oahu. “I flew over in a plane and saw the perfect left,” he recalled of traveling to the island of Molokai. It was there that he discovered a new love — woodworking. He began shaping his own surfboards and worked at the local hardware store and with a contractor, honing skills that would lead him to create furniture. With a few stops in between, Foley made his way back to the Emerald Coast and

continued his passion for creating. The local community became a huge part in Foley’s life, and he has dedicated himself to becoming a true patron of the local arts. He crafts his traditional-style pieces at his home studio where he finds inspiration from the treasure trove of items he has collected throughout his life. He spends most days in his studio assembling, building, sanding — and, sometimes, enjoying a beer — while working out the aspects of his creative process. What keeps Foley inspired? Music and boxing are two outlets he has always enjoyed. When asked who his hero would be, he said, “I am looking at several,” deciding that “it would be a tie between Muhammad Ali and Tom Waits.” His grandad and dad were both boxers. With any roommate he ever had, sparring at the gym was always a prerequisite. On boxing, he said, “I haven’t given up yet!” He shared this knowledge and passion with his boys and taught them quite well. Locals enthusiastically describe Foley, noting his love of storytelling and sense of community. “As I am sure most people do, I feel like I have always known Foley,” said Jennifer Steele,

JAMES FOLEY

Foley, who spent some early years surfing the coasts of Hawaii where he first honed his woodworking skills, would eventually return to his beloved Emerald Coast with stories to share.

Coastal Luxury realtor Annie Lockamy considers her friend, “Foles,” a loved and respected member and artist in the community. His home is more telling than some of his stories, with mementos of his life, travels and handcrafted pieces.

executive director of the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County. “He is one of a handful of folks synonymous with my hometown. Foley and my grandfather were local volunteers for national political campaigns in the early 2000s. Every time I see Foley, he reminisces about how they recruited me and my sisters to put out campaign signs, which made our grandfather so proud. I love that he retells that memory because it makes me feel closer to the area and my grandparents, who I miss very much.” Steele also noted Foley’s connection to our arts programs and his continued efforts to build relationships with others. Steele worked with Foley on a commission for the Watersound® Monarch Art Trail, calling the experience “a joy and an adventure.” Foley

handcrafted benches for the trail, creating a resting place to take in the surrounding art and nature. Steele joined Foley on a trip to Bruner Lumber Company in Red Bay where he hand-picked the cypress that she would see become art back at his studio. “The whole process was so special to me,” she said. Foley’s dedication to the community resonates with Steele as it does with many. For the last decade, Foley has volunteered every year to cut 500 cardboard butterfly wings for the Flutterby Festival. “He is a captivating storyteller with a heart of gold,” Steele said. “Being in Foley’s orbit makes you feel like you belong, and it feels good.”

The Foley family home is filled with his most beautiful creations. Notably his favorite — the dining room table and chairs he built 40 years ago. Foley’s craftsmanship can be seen throughout our coastal communities — recognizably at Red Bar’s front door, a piece enhanced by local artist Bryan Hand; in Seaside at Bud & Alley’s; and the benches lining the Watersound® Monarch Art Trail. My husband and I are fortunate enough to have several Foley originals in our home that we treasure. His adirondack chairs are popularly renowned for their design — he’s built over 1,000. Ordering from Foley may take a “little longer” than one might expect because he is “always on beachtime.” One of his friends told me his wife Colleen bought him a coffee cup that reads “I’m sorry,” written many times. When Foley asked why she would buy that for him she proclaimed with a laugh, “well that’s what I hear you say to your customers on the phone!” We do give him a hard time about the wait, but I can assure you when your oneof-a-kind piece arrives framed by the sincere dedication that Foley puts into each of his crafts, the wait will be well worth it! Foley is a gifted artist, South Walton local and a true friend to many. If you happen to be in town, stop by Hurricane Oyster Bar around 3:30 p.m., and you will likely find Foley sitting and sharing stories — some tall and some short — about a life well lived along our sandy shores. His timeless furniture shares stories that will live on and remain a continuous part of 30A and our local communities. Let the art speak for itself. CoastalLuxury.com | 13

Honest, Accurate Projections Professionals at 360 Blue accesses thorough data to provide real projections

A

top priority at 360 Blue is the development of honest and accurate rental projections for prospective vacation rental homeowners. As a result, the projections we provide are far more accurate than those developed by any of our competitors on the Emerald Coast. What makes us so confident? It comes down to data. 360 Blue is in a unique position, having the largest set of comparable properties along the Emerald Coast in our portfolio. We also have access to all the critical revenue data for these homes — and it’s exclusive to us. Revenue data, of course, is the basis on which all legitimate rental projections are developed. Let’s take a quick look at how one is arrived at. When developing a projection, we always incorporate revenue metrics from a minimum of three comparable properties. The greater the similarity between these homes, the better. Similarity offers more meaningful data, which in turn makes for a more accurate projection. The most meaningful metrics include the true rental rate of the property, how the home is

currently pacing compared to the same time last year and, of course, occupancy and average daily rate. 360 Blue has access to all such data points on over 700 homes here on the Emerald Coast. We have higher quality data than anyone else — and more of it. In other words, we’re not guessing when it comes to rental projections. And we have the data to back up the claim. We recently evaluated all new homes that joined our program last year and compared what they actually earned in gross annual revenue, relative to what we initially projected. The results were remarkable: 90% of these homes were within our projected range and 85% met or exceeded the expected gross annual revenue.

CHEERS to SUNDOWNERS The Campesino cocktails we love BY TODD COSTON

T

his year Hatton Smith II, the visionary creator behind a renowned rum company that originated in Panama, introduced Campesino rum to 30A. Smith, a Birmingham native, grew up with a strong connection with the Emerald Coast. In fact, his grandmother was one of the first residents to have a house on 30A in the 1940s in Inlet Beach. A frequent skydiver and surfer, Smith embodies the essence of a true adventurer, seeking new heights and embracing the Gulf’s ocean waves. Each bottle of Campesino captures this spirit, echoing the wild and untamed origins of its creation. Campesino came to life after Smith’s remarkable experience living in Panama, where he operated an off-grid distillery on a farm nestled in the heart of the jungle. Through this endeavor, he crafted exceptional rum and ignited his passion for the art of distilling. Today rum enthusiasts sip his iconic rums: the “Silver,” a light and crisp rum aged 2–5 years with notes of vanilla, and the “Aged,” a deep and rich rum aged 6–8 years with hints of oak, honey, caramel and brown sugar. Florida is the No. 1 rum market in the United States, and Smith is already making a

Sleek Sophistication IN ALYS BEACH

The reveal of a highly curated design at 30 N. Charles Street BY ERIN ODEN PHOTOS BY LAYNE LILLIE AND DEREK MAKEKAU

This summer, Coastal Luxury had the honor of listing 30 N. Charles Street. Nestled behind Fonville Park on the notable North Charles Street in Alys Beach, Florida, this enchanting home has recently undergone a full interior redesign, revealing breathtaking craftsmanship and showcasing design details with an unmistakable artistic flair. With an unwavering commitment to delivering exquisite and personalized designs, Bohlert Massey Interiors has established itself as a renowned design

firm throughout our coastal communities. Well known for their distinctive commitment to detail, with a technique that harmoniously blends timeless elegance with modern sophistication, their reputation for excellence has made them a popular local name and earned the admiration and loyalty of clients among the area. Recently, we sat down with the acclaimed motherdaughter designer duo, BO MASSEY and SUSAN BOHLERT SMITH, to discuss the intricate design elements that inspired this home’s magnetic charm. ON THE COVER

How did you discover 30A?

As a child, my family would visit the area often, and the beach has always felt like home to me. At the time, there was not much more than trees between Panama City Beach and Destin. What is now 30A felt very isolated and remote. We moved here in 1997, when Rosemary Beach was just breaking ground, and it felt like we lived in the country. We’d keep a little johnboat on the beach and there were very few people or houses around us. The beautiful beaches are the same but everything else has changed a lot. Having an established portfolio of interior design projects along Scenic 30A, tell us about what makes the community of Alys Beach unique to you as designers.

The importance of architecture and design in the community is a joy for us as designers. It seems with every home built in Alys Beach there is a new expectation for quality and individuality within both the exterior and interior design. Nuanced architectural, landscape and interior details are emphasized and seen throughout Alys Beach. No matter how many times we walk through the town, there is always a new and thoughtful detail to notice. The embrace of global styles in Alys, from the Mediterranean region, Bermuda, Guatemala, and Morocco, has allowed us to lean into inspiration from throughout the world, not just a traditional Southern aesthetic. The all-white color palette of the exterior and common use of white Venetian plaster inside homes often leaves us with a blank canvas to play with color, texture and a different mix of styles to give each home we work on a unique personality. It is always important for us to use the white walls synonymous with Alys Beach, while still giving a house warmth and texture through our finish selections and use of color. How did you focus on capturing the defining elements of Alys Beach at 30 N. Charles Street?

This home was one of the first built in Alys Beach in 2008, and when tasked with 22 | Fall/Winter 2023

renovating the property, there were many elements we decided to keep as they are classic examples of architecture seen in Alys Beach. This includes the stylized plaster arches throughout the house and white Venetian-plaster walls. We also assisted in the courtyard’s landscape design to make sure the space felt like a lush oasis. The courtyards of Alys Beach are one of its best elements — they are a respite from the sun and a place to enjoy the outdoors privately in the middle of the bustling little town. What were the original visionary elements and features that you wanted to bring forth at 30 N. Charles Street?

Our main goal was to modernize the property while utilizing design elements seen in classical island properties. The high contrast elements throughout the house of dark cabinetry, floors and metal finishes helped bring modernity to the house while still maintaining an island influence, as it is common to see dark wood incorporated into coastal homes throughout the world, specifically those with a colonial influence. As is typical in our coastal projects, a use of sea life, tropical foliage, natural jute and grasscloth textures are incorporated as a reminder of the home’s beachside locale. We also wanted to make the layout of the common areas more functional and usable. Originally, the dining and lounge area had one dining table centered in the room. We felt the addition of a banquette and bar could 24 | Fall/Winter 2023

make the room multifunctional and give it more atmosphere. Most of the cabinetry was designed inhouse by our office (some original vanities were left in the house) and we wanted to give the cabinetry the same aesthetic as the furnishings. The kitchen island is a reededwalnut design and the upper cabinets are metal with antique mirrors lining the back of the cabinets. The bar cabinet is also walnut, and we incorporated louvered doors to tie in our coastal inspiration. Upgrading materials in the house was an important part of this renovation. Custom cabinetry, leather furnishings, marble countertops, a silk Fortuny chandelier,

grasscloth, and antique hand-knotted rugs are some of the elements. Our idea was to not only upgrade the home’s finishes but to transform it into a destination in itself where you step inside and feel like you’ve been transported to a place far away from Northwest Florida.

you may visit on a trip to Jamaica or the Bahamas. A space where Hemingway would want to have a drink — or many.

What particular design features set this home apart from others?

We love this home. It’s one of our favorite projects we have completed in Alys Beach, as we had a hand in all of the interior specifications and love the eclectic mix of new and old. We would be happy to work with the new homeowners who want to personalize it to their tastes and fill it with even more unique pieces.

The dining room mural is by one of our favorite local artists, Marion Barnes. It is a showstopper. We wanted this space, with its adjacent bar, to feel like a vintage lounge

What would you like to say to the future owners of 30 N. Charles Street?

Works of edible and sipped art are what the South Walton Beaches Wine & Food Festival intends to create in its 11th year, occurring the weekend of April 25–28. The festival spans across Grand Boulevard’s Town Center, merging winemakers, chefs, distillers and brewers for four days of events that include wine tastings, educational seminars, culinary stations, entertainment, a charity component and more. The festival begins on Thursday with a Winemakers & Shakers event. Friday includes a VIP wine tasting followed by the Craft Beer & Spirits Jam. The Grand Tasting main events will occur Saturday from 3–6 p.m. and Sunday from 1–4 p.m. This year’s event will include more activations than ever before, allowing guests to interact with ambassadors from wineries, distilleries, breweries and eateries in convivial and engaging settings. At the Grand Tasting, guests can sample from hundreds of varieties of wines from throughout the

world, many of which stem from rare and impressive collections. Jackson Family Wines, a notable crowd favorite from the 2023 lineup, will be returning with an even larger presence at the featured tent in Grand Park. “The wines poured are not your everyday wines, nor are the spirits,” said Stacey Brady, executive director of South Walton Beaches Wine & Food Festival. “We hope you experience something new, something you haven’t tasted before or always wanted to try. We hope you find your next repeat, go-to bottle for every day or a special occasion.” A unique aspect that delves further into the epicurean craft is the educational tasting seminars. The 2024 event will include four total seminars throughout the Saturday and Sunday Grand Tasting. The tasting seminars are presented by seasoned winemakers, chefs and distillers who impart their expert knowledge and samplings of unique flavor profiles.

“The seminars are immensely popular because they are an exciting, yet informative way to learn something new and taste something you’ve never experienced before,” Brady said. Throughout the Grand Tasting days, guests can visit the Savor South Walton Culinary Village, which presents a pairing menu of delights from the Wine World restaurants. Additionally, Nosh Pavilions are located throughout the festival grounds, offering samplings from renowned restaurants throughout South Walton and Destin. Musical performances will be provided by the Casey Kearney band and the Nashville Songwriters Showcase brought in by the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association. Brady recommends attendees peruse the tasting program, released two weeks before the event to the SoWalWine.com website, to plan for tastings, activations and seminars they want to attend. All events during the weekend raise funds for the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation, benefiting children’s charities located throughout Northwest Florida. “Coming off of the 2023 event, we received such amazing feedback from attendees and industry professionals that we feel like we’ve hit our stride in terms of executing an amazing, world-class event,” Brady said. “We look forward to continuing that momentum while exceeding expectations in 2024.” Visit SoWalWine.com as additional details and tickets become available for the 2024 festival.

COAST to COAST Exploring the coastal gem of Cape Town, South Africa BY BLAIZE MYRICK

28 | Fall/Winter 2023

South Africa, this thriving metropolis boasts a colorful tapestry of history and culture, majestic mountains and coastal opulence.

HISTORY

History is palpable in Cape Town. Old neighborhoods and their residents enlighten visitors with warm welcomes and shared tales of resilience. Travelers can learn more about the city’s complex history by visiting museums and areas that illustrate the multicultural dynamics of this special city. District Six Museum serves as a memorial for the many displaced citizens of apartheid. Bo-Kaap Museum highlights the local Islamic heritage, located at the foothills of Signal Hill and nestled among brightly colored homes dotting cobblestone streets. Robben Island teaches visitors about apartheid, specifically political prisoners. The most famous is Nelson Mandela, who was incarcerated there for 18 years. Visitors may take the ferry from the Victoria & Alfred market.

I

n this world-traveler and real estate professional’s opinion, Cape Town, South Africa, is a bucket-list top 10 for anyone who appreciates coastal living. Thinking about this enchanting city, particularly its gracious people and breathtaking scenery, brings back nostalgic memories of my time there and a joy-filled anticipation for the opportunity to one day return. After graduating from The University of Georgia, I was fortunate to spend two summers working in, exploring and falling in love with the city of Cape Town. Like the Emerald Coast communities Coastal Luxury serves, Cape Town has abundant offerings for locals and tourists alike. Keep in mind that “American summers” are winters there, since Cape Town is in Earth’s southern hemisphere, nestled on the southern tip of South Africa and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Nicknamed “The Mother City” because it was the original European settlement in

Visitors to Cape Town can ride a cable car or hike to the top of the flat-topped Table Mountain, offering expansive coastal views.

Avocado toast (above) is popularly served to patrons at the Old Biscuit Mill farmers market. The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (right) is home to an unmatched culinary scene.

What traveler doesn’t seek the best cuisine a new city has to offer? Cape Town’s culinary scene is unmatched, from exquisite seafood restaurants in the picturesque Victoria & Alfred Waterfront to award-winning Michelin star restaurants in the city center. With a fusion of flavors that draw inspiration from its diverse people, Cape Town caters to every palate by blending international sophistication with local ingredients. My favorite restaurant is Kloof Street House. Whether you desire a casual experience in its cozy courtyard or a romantic evening in an eclectic dining room, Kloof Street House is a must. Surrounding vineyards level up the restaurant experience, as vintners and chefs collaborate to create perfect pairings. Many vacationers enjoy a day trip to vineyards in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Farmersmarket fans will be in heaven at the Old Biscuit Mill in the Woodstock neighborhood. The market features abundant food options, booths filled with artisanal crafts and live entertainment each Saturday and Sunday.

CULTURE & CUISINE

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Coastal Luxury realtor Blaize Myrick abseils down Table Mountain, overlooking Cape Town.

jumping, abseiling and surfing. One of the most iconic experiences in Cape Town is hiking the infamous Table Mountain. At a 2,300-foot elevation, the summit awards hikers and cable car riders with panoramic views of the city and coastline. I particularly love the “Garden Route,” which takes visitors on extraordinary wildlife encounters. Walk with elephants at Knysna Elephant Park or follow a knowledgeable guide from one of the many game lodges to enjoy a safari adventure with hopes of catching a glimpse of the “big five” — elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros and buffalo. In the wilderness, safari participants also enjoy luxurious

accommodations and delectable meals. Driving the 190-mile Garden Route is a wonderful way to sightsee along the coast from Mossel Bay to the Storms River and the Formosa Provincial Nature Reserve. The drive is peppered with lagoons, quaint towns, forests and beaches. National Geographic named it “the ultimate road trip.” A trip to Cape Town is not complete without checking off these quintessential experiences. Sip afternoon high tea at the Mount Nelson hotel, also known as “Pink Lady.” Watch the perfect sunset with a sundowner (local term for a drink at sunset) in hand at Camps Bay Beach. Or

wander through the flower-filled paths of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. As for accommodations, if comfort is in order, The Silo Hotel tops the list. Its rooftop bar showcases views of the Atlantic on one side and Table Mountain on the other. The One&Only Cape Town and The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa are other A-list options. My hope is that readers who have not toured Cape Town will add it to their travel plans. I am confident that anyone fortunate enough to visit Cape Town will immediately share my deep admiration for this coastal gem. CoastalLuxury.com | 31
