KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Stay PCB current with these safety tips from local lifeguard Chris Croteau
C
hris Croteau is a professional lifeguard with the beach safety division of Panama City Beach Fire Rescue. He has a bachelor’s degree in marine biology from the University of West Florida; is trained in open water lifeguarding; certified as an emergency medical responder and a personal watercraft rescue operator; and is currently working to obtain an emergency medical technician license. Croteau, a PCB resident for 11 years, has been lifeguarding area beaches since 2021, performing some 200 water rescues and responding to medical emergencies. What is the best way for visitors to stay informed on beach conditions ahead of arrival?
I recommend downloading surf and weather forecast apps before planning a trip to Panama City Beach. Checking the predictions before making the decision to visit can help avoid arriving during a period of rough seas or bad weather. You can also sign up for daily text alerts and simply opt out of the alerts when you return home. Text PCBFLAGS to 888777 or visit PCBFL.gov. The Emerald Coast is known for its pristine and often calm emerald waters. What signs should beachgoers 1 2 REAL.FUN.BEACH. 2024
look for before safely enjoying a swim in the Gulf of Mexico?
By far the most dangerous hazards in our waters are rip currents. Rip currents are strong currents that flow from the shore out to deeper water. Swimmers of all experience levels can get swept out by rip currents and find themselves in danger if they panic. Rip currents occur in deeper channels between sandbars along the shore. Look at the shape of the sandbars when you arrive at the beach and avoid swimming near breaks in bet ween shallow sandbars. Typically, rip currents are located within the calm areas of the surf, which is where many beachgoers would think is the safest area.
When the occasional purple flag graces PCB shores what should visitors look out for and avoid?
Purple flags in PCB are a heads-up that there are blooms of stinging jellyfish or Port ug uese man-of-war in the water. Most stings are only painful and inconvenient, but it’s always nice to be aware of the situation before committing to a beach day. Most know that a green flag gives the all clear and a red flag presents warning, but what should be expected when entering waters flagged as yellow?
The Gulf of Mexico is often pristine and calm, but it is also a very dynamic and varied place. Even on a calm day, light currents and waves may be present in certain stretches of beach. Non-swimmers and kids can still get into trouble in these situations, so we put the yellow flags up to remind more vulnerable beachgoers to be alert for the moderate hazards they may encounter. Panama City Beach does not fly green flags because there is always a rip current hazard.
Beach Day Essentials Lifeguard Chris Croteau recommends packing these items for a safe, fun day on PCB shores
Hydration Water is best. Plan for 15 ounces of water per hour, per person.
What is the difference in danger between a red flag and a double red flag?
Red flags indicate that we’ve observed areas of high hazard that are dangerous to swimmers. Every person who enters the water should be very cautious and not push the boundaries of their experience level. Double red flags are only raised when the Gulf conditions are deemed to be excessively dangerous and any type of entry into the water is likely to lead to an emergency. Midday upgrades to double red flags appear when multiple rescues occur and lifeguards and emergency services are unable to keep up. Remember, double red flags are usually due to rip currents that are hard to spot without a trained eye. They can happen even when the water appears calm and peaceful. You are not allowed to be in the water during double red flags. In the case that a lifeguard’s assistance is needed, how should visitors best react and call upon help?
If you see any kind of emergency situation happen in the water or on the beach, look around to see if there is a lifeguard tower or
vehicle around. They are always your best and fastest option. If there is no lifeguard in sight, call 911. As a division of the Fire Department, we are activated by fire dispatch and we’re usually the first responders to arrive at any beach emergency. I strongly advise against trying to rescue anyone yourself. Most fatal drownings happen to the would-be rescuer, not the original victims. What is your favorite part of the job as a PCB lifeguard?
Shade Umbrellas and hats are useful for protection from the sun and staying cool.
Sunscreen
I really love the fact that I never know what the next day at work will hold. The weird, wacky and wild situations I’m able to be a part of on a daily basis are beyond what I could ever imagine. The balance between the long periods of watching over peaceful beach days and training, then putting the training into practice in all kinds of emergencies, keeps me coming back for more. However, the best part of my job is my team, who I know I can count on unconditionally and have become a family both on and off the sand.
Zinc oxide mineral sunscreen is best, as it lasts longer while swimming. Long clothing can be helpful as well.
Flotation Device Non-inflatables are the safest and best option. Pool noodles, sturdy bodyboards and surfboards are all good choices.
Beach Flags To Stay PCB current with daily updates on water conditions, text PCBFLAGS to 888777 or visit PCBFL.gov.

SINGLE RED

Medium Hazard with moderate surf and/or strong currents.
High hazard with high surf and strong currents.

LOCALS TIPS
PCB — IN YOUR WORDS
Whether you’re traveling to Panama City Beach for the first time or just looking for something new to check out this year with the family, PCB locals have all the best tips for you. For those of us who live in paradise, we know the best times to hit the beach to avoid crowds and the restaurants which genuinely have the best Gulf seafood. You heard it here first!
“Beat the crowds for dinner. If you can pull yourself off the beach early, go to dinner around 3–4 p.m. to beat the 5–6 p.m. crowds. This will leave you plenty of time to take in one of our famous sunsets!”
Kelly Breedwell
“For those wanting to sit on the beach and soak up the vitamin sea on a windy day, check out a wind barrier. They are light and easy to carry and keep the wind off of you. You can find them on amazon!”
Joe Weaver
“Make sure to try the local seafood! Don’t miss the chance to indulge in the fresh seafood! There are so many amazing restaurants in PCB. Two of my personal favorites are Capt. Anderson’s and Dusty’s Oyster Bar.”
“Walk on the beach early in the morning as the sun is rising. Walk on the beach mid-day, then again when the sun sets. It is always changing and you will experience something new and magical each time.”

ISLAND LIFE Just a shuttle away, Shell Island is the getaway within your getaway BY CARRIE HONAKER

TIPS FROM THE TAXI
Recreation manager Chris Green covers the island essentials Sunscreen! Apply prior to arrival and make sure you pack extra for the day. “I always tell guests, ‘it’s a good day for a sunburn, and it doesn’t take long down here,’” Green advises.
N
o need to travel to faraway destinations to experience island life. Panama City Beach’s Shell Island has all the relaxinggetaway vibes of a private island without the high price tag. Cast off your worries and set sail for the 7-mile barrier island just off St. Andrews State Park where starfish, sand dollars and dolphins are crowd regulars. Nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and St. Andrew Bay, the secluded island is only accessible by boat and has no restrooms, running water, picnic pavilions or even trash cans — so be sure to pack accordingly and remember to gather all trash before leaving. To get there, hop on the Shell Island Ferry. It runs at the top of
the hour starting at 9 a.m. and returns at the bottom of the hour with the last shuttle returning at 4:45 p.m. According to Chris Green, recreation general manager for guest services at St. Andrews State Park, it’s best to book 24–48 hours ahead (you can do this online) to secure your spot and arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Leave a little time to hit up the Pier Store for all those essentials you may have forgotten. Green explained that the full retail shop offers drinks, snacks, fishing gear and sunscreen. Plus, you can rent beach chairs, umbrellas and snorkeling gear to bring over to the island. Once you’ve crossed the bay, you’ll have minimal options from the island’s small retail gazebo.
A towel, beach chair and umbrella are a must — there are no tables, chairs or pavilions on the island. Pack a cooler with snacks and drinks. You can pick up supplies at the Pier Store before you board, but don’t count on any food or drink once you make it to the island. Leave no trace! Shell Island does not have trash cans on-site. Help us keep the beach pristine by bringing a bag to store trash while visiting the state park. Bring nets, goggles, masks and snorkels so you can enjoy an underwater experience. There is an abundance of marine wildlife to see.

The shuttle will drop you and your crew off approximately two and a half miles down the island from the shipping lanes, away from everybody. “You basically pull up to a private beach that’s not inundated with traffic or crowds,” Green said. “The water is a little clearer, a little bluer, a little greener and has a softer current. The marine life is easier to spot because of the lagoon drop-off location. You’ll see pelicans, blue herons and, of course, bottlenose dolphins.” And the shelling is choice. Wander the pristine beaches to find moon snails, conch shells, pin shells, periwinkles, whelk and olive shells, all indigenous to the area. As long as they are unoccupied, you can collect as many as you like. You’ll rejuvenate your spirit surrounded by the coastal
dune grasses, and maybe spot an endangered sea turtle in the unspoiled environs that recall a Florida long ago. “The barrier island allows you to experience nature at its best. Yes, we’re on an island and we’re doing our thing as human beings, but to experience that natural beauty is breathtaking,” Green said. “Everybody that gets off our ferry is wowed by how gorgeous it is. It's a really special place, a public beach with an intimate setting.” For the 2024 season, visitors can pick up a Shell Island Survival Kit from the Pier Store with all the necessities — a disposable cooler will be packed with a bag of ice, water bottles, sunscreen, and a couple of snacks of your choice. Just bring yourself and a towel for a day of blissful fun on this island sanctuary.

Fun Vacation doesn’t have to break the bank — the best things in PCB are free BY CARRIE HONAKER
They say the best things in life are free, and in Panama City Beach, that’s a true statement. There is sandcastle making, trail blazing and live music, but you can also find deep discounts for dining, accommodations and attractions with Visit Panama City Beach’s PCB Perks campaign.
Beach It The 27 miles of pristine beach offer a kaleidoscope of opportunities that won’t cost a dollar. With nearly 100 public access points, the sand provides the perfect backdrop for sunrise yoga, beach volleyball, a jog or enjoying a sunset view. Collect some shells while walking the beach and checking out the marine life — you might even luck into a dolphin or stingray sighting. The best show in town, sunset, comes free of charge every night. Wander the Trails PCB parks provide a shady respite full of natural wonders. Visit St. Andrews State Park where you’ll find 1.5 miles of pristine beaches bordered by the Gulf and the Grand Lagoon, as well as two nature trails where migratory birds, alligators and deer hide out. The park charges a small fee (between $2–$8), but once you’re in, nature adventures are free to seize. Camp Helen State Park offers a quieter experience along with a rare ecological wonder, Lake Powell coastal dune lake. Wander the trails and check out the protected bird species or maybe you’ll catch sight of a
bald eagle. To immerse in the wetlands and wildlife, visit the 2,900-acre Panama City Beach Conservation Park where 24 miles of trails and boardwalks over protected habitats offer guides to local plants and animals. A pavilion area offers picnic tables, public restrooms and an outdoor classroom.
Listen to Live Music June through August you can hear music filling the air around Aaron Bessant Park. Thursday nights, the amphitheater lights up with the Summer Concert Series. Bring your blankets, chairs and picnics, and enjoy a free evening of live music. Browse Some Shops Window shopping doesn’t cost a thing and PCB has plenty to keep you busy. Pier Park is packed with shops to
peruse. For something that taps into local finds, check out the Decor by the Shore trail on Page 34 which features a bevy of independent boutiques and mom-and-pop shops for all those oneof-a-kind finds. If you’ve got a small budget to work with, pop into a local thrift shop like Save the Closet — which provides disaster relief to those in need — and find a wide variety of vintage treasures and stylish attire.
Utilize Complimentary Amenities Many hotels and resorts offer freebies like complimentary beach chair and umbrella rentals, gym access, free DVDs, kid-friendly activities, events and breakfast or coffee. But even the property itself can be a wonderland of free entertainment. Reel. Fun. Beach. A year of fishing in PCB rewards with a diverse plenty BY CAPT. NATHAN CHENNAUX

P
anama City Beach truly is the jewel of Northwest Florida. Situated on pristine, white sand beaches surrounded by crystal clear, turquoise waters, its beauty is something to behold. While that’s the major draw for most people, those of us who like to wet a hook know that our little slice of paradise also offers some of the best fishing in the country. Each season of the year offers new and exciting opportunities for anglers of all ages and skill levels. Whether it’s your first outing or you are a seasoned pro, there’s no shortage of adventure to be found on the water.
Winter
Our w inters a re t y pica l ly mild and comfortable, outside of the few days when cold fronts pass through. Inshore, on the flats, our primary target is the redfish, our hardy year-round resident gamefish that easily tolerates the cool water temperatures and thrives in shallow negative tides. Most of my winter days are spent poling the shallows in search of redfish either tailing or cruising the shoreline. Once you spot them, it’s important to take your time and close the distance quietly so you don’t spook any
PCB OFFERS year-round fishing as redfish school around in winter, spring brings the best time to angle for sheepshead, summer relents to lively activity for many species and fall offers possibly the best bite season of them all.
wary fish. In these situations, I like to use light spinning tackle, but fly fishing gear is very effective, too. Half of the battle is getting stealthy and accurate presentations to the fish. I prefer to use small soft-plastic baits, either flatlined or attached to a light jig head up to about an eighth of an ounce. When it’s overcast or too windy on the flats, I focus my efforts on wading bayous and tidal pools for large speckled trout. This is a different type of fishing altogether — the fish are rarely seen and far less skittish. The specks can be somewhat lethargic from the cold but they’re not usually spooked because they tend to stay in water at least three feet deep. I actually prefer to use bait casting equipment in these situations and throw suspending or slow-sinking twitch-bait lures because they typically entice bigger bites. Deeper waters around the inlet, bridges and other structures offer completely different fishing opportunities. Big bull reds, mangrove snapper, grouper and other bottom-dwelling fish tend to stay relatively active during the cool months. Medium to medium-heavy bottom or spinning gear is enough to handle most fish. Live bait on a Carolina-style rig or soft-plastic and bucktail jigs also work well.
Spring
As winter begins to give way to the longer and warmer days of spring, the bays and coastal waters along the beaches begin to flourish with a wide variety of sea life. Along the beaches, large schools of redfish cruise just outside of the surf, searching from inlet to inlet for food. These fish are usually aggressive and can be caught on a variety of artificial lures and live baits. In the inlets along the jetties and other submerged structures, sheepshead start to stack up in preparation for the spawn. This is when they are most concentrated and most susceptible to being caught. The best way to target sheepshead is with a live bait rigged with shrimp or fiddler crabs. Some anglers prefer a heavy lead weight to pin the bait to the bottom, but I like to use a light lead so that my bait will drift across the top of the rocks and not get eaten by pinfish or other predators. Don't be surprised if you hook into a few redfish and pompano when targeting sheepshead since both species 2 0 2 4 V I S I T PA N A M A C I T Y B E A C H . C O M 3 9
inhabit similar areas and eat some of the same forage. Spanish mackerel also start to populate local waters by early spring. An aggressive fish with a voracious appetite, Spanish mackerel are a blast to catch on light tackle and a great fish for introducing new anglers to the use of artificial lures. Jigs, spoons and small plugs are great options to throw at schools of fish chasing surface bait. Trolling is also a viable tactic and probably the most common way mackerel are targeted. Mid-spring is when we start to see the arrival of the bigger migratory fish such as cobia, king mackerel and tarpon. Cobia tend to show up along the beaches when the water temperature hits 70 degrees Fahrenheit, followed shortly after by king mackerel. Late May is when the first schools of tarpon can be seen migrating along our coastline and they will be plentiful into the first part of July.
Summer
Summer is a time for early morning sunrises and late evening sunsets on the water. Hungry speckled trout and redfish rule the early morning hours when the temperature is cool and low light gives them an advantage when stalking fish in the shallows. Top-water plugs worked along f looded reed beds can get those explosive surface strikes many anglers crave. Big bull redfish can be found lurking in the heavy current brought on by hard falling tides and feasting on the seemingly endless supply of blue crabs getting swept out toward the Gulf of Mexico. Schools of tarpon will be on the move. As summer progresses, those f ish will disappear from the beaches and become more prevalent inshore around bridges and backwaters. Big live baits such as crabs, pinfish, mullet and live 4 0 REAL.FUN.BEACH. 2024
or chunk ladyfish will give you a good shot at a silver king. In the Gulf, a wide variety of snapper, grouper, mahi mahi, mackerel, jacks, triggerfish and many other delicious, fun-to-fight fish will be around to catch and enjoy at the dinner table.
Fall
Autumn offers some of the best fishing to be had all year. With its arrival, crisp northerly winds frequently blow and changes can be seen throughout the bays and nearshore waters. Schools of baitfish spawned in the spring are reaching maturity and stacking up in big pods where they become easy targets for all makes and models of gamefish. Mangrove snapper, redfish, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, flounder and jacks offer plenty of action. Inshore, the f lats are teeming with life. Big schools of redfish cruise the shallows while speckled trout lie in wait in the grass, looking for an opportunity to ambush unsuspecting prey. Flounder make their way to the passes and inlets where they concentrate for a short period of time before ultimately ending up in the Gulf at one of the many nearshore reefs and wrecks along our coast. As the water continues to cool, inshore bottom f ishing heats up with snapper and grouper as they become far more aggressive and inhabit increasingly shallow depths. In open water, schooling f ish such as bluef ish, ladyf ish and Spanish mackerel will also be prevalent in the fall, gorging on any food source they can as they prepare to migrate south to warmer waters. W h ate v er t he s e a son a nd whenever you come to Panama City Beach, there will be plenty of unforgettable fishing opportunities awaiting you!
HIT THE WATERS FOR SEASON 9 “CHASIN’ THE SUN,” Visit Panama City Beach’s awardwinning fishing and coastal lifestyle television series, returns for its ninth season on Discovery Channel and Waypoint TV. Leake. “Chasin’ the Sun” has received numerous honors since its 2016 debut, including U.S. Travel Association Destiny Awards for “Best Video, Film or Podcast Series” and “People’s Choice,” as well as Visit Florida’s Flagler Award for niche marketing. utdoor activities in Panama City Beach usually revolve around two things: sand and surf. It’s natural that the world’s most beautiful beaches beckon locals and travelers alike, but the area also features a treasure trove of activities, sights and places to explore that don’t include a beach towel.
DIVING AND SNORKELING For scuba divers in search of unique underwater adventures, PCB is the place to be. Underneath its turquoise waters lies a treasure trove of natural and man-made sites spread across the northern Gulf of Mexico. “The diving here is phenomenal,” said Todd Yarbrough, course director at Red Alert Diving, a full-service dive center and aquatic training facility. “The variation of depth, the visibility and the conditions and the animal life are just unparalleled.” Within just a few miles of Panama City Beach, divers will find more than 50 artificial reefs, sunken ships and barges, as well as hundreds of natural limestone reefs. “The artificial reef system we have here is pretty great,” said Yarbrough, who started diving when he was 12. “We have everything from 400-foot-long ships to 40-foot Army tankers for people to dive on. Our shipwrecks are all within recreational limits, and they’re as clean and as safe as anything can be in our sport.” Perhaps the greatest draw — and one that appeals to all ages — is the marine life accessible around these dive sites. From amberjack to goliath grouper, and nearly everything in between, Panama City Beach’s numerous dive sites are teeming with subaquatic creatures to be discovered. For adventure enthusiasts without a diving certification, snorkeling off the coast of St. Andrews State Park or the secluded Shell Island is the perfect way to explore the area’s turquoise waters. The Gulf ’s excellent water clarity, which is even better during the fall months, allows for plentiful encounters with undersea life. Need a place to start — or dive in? The PCB area has several local businesses that will help you train, gain certification and even buy gear, including Red Alert Diving and others like Panama City Dive Center, Panama City Diving, Dive Locker and Diver’s Den. These dive shops even offer diving charters if you’re looking to get on the water straightaway.
DEEP DIVE Here are five of the top wrecks and reefs to seek out in PCB
EL DORADO This former luxury cruise liner, damaged during Hurricane Michael in October 2018, is the newest wreck to join the area’s list of artificial reefs.
BLACK BART Located six miles off shore, this old oil field supply ship serves as a memorial to Capt. Charles Bartholomew, the U.S. Navy’s Supervisor of Salvage in Panama City.
USS STRENGTH This former U.S. Navy minesweeper is one of the most inviting wrecks along the Gulf Coast. Sunk in 1987, the 184-foot ship is located about 6 miles off the coast.
EMPIRE MICA Built in 1941, this 465-foot ocean tanker was torpedoed by a German U boat, and one of its propellers now sits at Captain Anderson’s restaurant.
LIBERTY SHIP This 441-foot World War II Liberty Ship is located in about 100 feet of water and about 10 miles offshore.

CAMPING Camping in Panama City Beach is an experience like no other. Not only can you sleep out under the stars, hike beautiful trails and roast marshmallows over a campfire — you can do it all within walking distance of the sparkling Gulf of Mexico! PCB is home to one of the most p op u l a r s t ate p a rk s i n F lor id a , St. Andrews State Park, where visitors can explore more than 1,200 acres of unique coastal terrain. This state park is perfect for tent campers and folks with RVs. With 176 campsites — for tents and RVs up to 45 feet — in the pinewoods near Grand Lagoon, the park has the largest selection of camping accommodations in the area. For the glampers of the world, there are three eco-tents available for rent with enhanced amenities including a queensize bed, air conditioning and WiFi. The park offers more than 1½ miles of sugar-white beachfront, and for those who like to hike or simply stroll through nature, there are t wo main inland trails. Heron Pond Trail takes visitors through a flatwood pine forest and past a historic turpentine still, while Gator Lake Trail offers a scenic view of Gator
Lake. Other activities include watching wading birds at Buttonbush Marsh, shore and pier fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and taking the boat shuttle to Shell Island, a pristine barrier island across the channel from the park. BIKING AND HIKING Walking is wonderful, but bicycling might get you through paradise quicker. With beautiful hiking and bike-friendly trails — plus plenty of bike rental shops — Panama City Beach is a trailblazer’s dream come true. The Panama City Beach Conservation Park spans 2,912 acres and offers more than 24 miles of bike paths, trails and boardwalks. The 12 designated trails range from less than a mile to 11 miles long. An additional mile of boardwalks through the park’s wetlands allows bird watchers unparalleled opportunities to view migrating and local birds. For t he e x plorer who w a nts a smoother, less challenging path to follow than those found in the Conservation Park, Gayle’s Trails are a great option. These paved pathways were named after former Mayor Gayle F. Oberst, who played a major role in securing the grants that allowed for the trails’ development.
The Gayle’s Trails trailheads are found in Aaron Bessant Park and Frank Brown Park. Gayle’s Trails offer cyclists the choice of three routes with a round trip of up to 19.5 miles. Visitors can choose to walk or bike the trails found within the parks’ boundaries, or they can follow them from park to park. They can also explore the many paths that lead away from the parks, such as the trail that runs from Frank Brown Park to the Panama City Beach Conservation Park (2.8 miles), or the stretch that parallels Highway 79 North to the Intracoastal Waterway. PADDLEBOARDING Beach lovers can surf the waves via paddleboard on Panama City Beach’s protected and open waters like the Grand Lagoon, St. Andrew Bay and various cold springs, rivers and lakes in the region. While paddleboarding, guests can spy rays, fish, sea turtles, dolphins and other wildlife beneath the water’s surface. Equipment is easily rented from vendors including PCB SUP, and for the especially brave and well balanced, paddleboard yoga is also available at Yoga Elements.
WHAT BIKE FITS YOUR RIDE? How do you know what kind of bike you are best suited for? Here are a few things to keep in mind.
Single-speed vs. Multi-speed Traditionally, beach cruisers are designed as single-speed bikes — that is, they don’t have any gearing to change the resistance in the pedal stroke. That said, there are 3-speed and 7-speed versions. Having multiple gears is great for hilly terrain. Pedal Brakes vs. Handlebar Brakes Most beach cruisers brake simply by pedaling backwards, a centuryold technology known as coaster brakes. Handlebar brakes also are
easy to use, but they don’t have as clean a look and might require a bit more maintenance. Fit and Comfort When it comes to style, low-rider cruisers have a high “cool factor” and are a great choice for short rides around the beach. Longer rides are better when you’re seated in the upright position of a classic beach cruiser frame, which allows you to relax your arms and provides for a more efficient pedal stroke so that you are not wasting energy.

Winning
SPORTS PARKS PCB sporting events make the beach a winning perk for transient athletes and families BY PAIGE AIGRET
A
ll ages of athletes, their families and spectators travel the country for various sporting events and tournaments every year. USTravel.org reported that, in 2018, sports travel made up 8% of the total domestic travel market, resulting in 190 million domestic trips to attend or participate in a sporting event. And with the woes of pandemic lockdowns becoming a thing of which we hope to stay in the past, those numbers have begun to rise again. It’s no wonder that Panama City Beach would welcome this genre of tourism. Already a hot destination across the Southeast and the country at large, PCB has much to offer by way of a family playcation. Thus, Visit Panama City Beach’s mantra of “Real. Fun. Beach.” translates — Real. Fun. Sports. 74 REAL.FUN.BEACH. 2024
With two major sports parks in the area, families can now enjoy the luxury of an actual vacation to pair with their sports travel — a grand slam, indeed. Or, if in the area already for the main draw — the beach, of course — anyone can pop in for some good old-fashioned sporting fun. FRANK BROWN PARK has been catering to sports enthusiasts and festivalgoers alike since 1978. The 200-acre sprawl encompasses something for everyone — from sports fields to an aquatic center and from nature trails to a dog park. The park even has a stocked fishing pond on the property. This PCB-original sports park is primarily a diamond sports park, regularly hosting regional and national events for youth and adults, including United States Fastpitch
Association, Grand Slam Baseball and the World Sports League. But it is also home to a 50-meter Olympic pool with a springboard and a diving well, perfect for hosting competitions such as the master’s synchronized swimming national championship event that it has been home to. And family and friends can cool off too, with the newly renovated 5,000-squarefoot splash park and kids pool. And with the ever-growing popularity of skateboarding, Frank Brown Park will cater to this demand with a $350,000 project underway for a smaller, entrylevel skate park to complement the larger competition skate park at Publix Sports Park. Expanding still, new pickleball and basketball courts are being built and Frank Brown will also soon be home to a 15,000-square-foot indoor facility that will serve as a temporary storm shelter as well as an indoor classroom and court space for local programs.

20,000-SQUAREFOOT SKATE PARK has opened at Publix Sports Park featuring half pipes, quarter pipes, snake runs and multifunctional spaces for skating events.
PUBLIX SPORTS PARK has become the younger, yet more technologically advanced, sibling of Frank Brown in recent years. Opened in 2019 as the Panama City Beach Sports Complex and renamed since under Publix Super Markets’ sponsorship, the $42 million project has grown in popularity and in amenities in just its first few years. Sitting on 160 acres of land donated by The St. Joe Company, this park, too, has an abundance of sports fields — 13 total. The park boasts flexibility with multiuse fields for all sports. And state-of-the-art features like AstroTurf, Z-Cap cooling technology turf and Qualite LED lighting add to their flexibility in holding games despite inclement weather. Since opening, Publix Sports Park has been able to enhance its amenities with additions including a sound
system, improvements to the grounds and a netting system for baseball. Their largest addition since opening came to fruition in May of 2023 — a brand new 20,000-square-foot skate park designed by Team Pain Skate Park Design and Construction. The $2 million project mimics the rest of the park’s multiuse style, offering half pipes, quarter pipes, snake runs and multifunctional spaces for skating events. Looking ahead, the sports park has hired an architect with plans for a 100,000-square-foot indoor multipurpose facility for court sports, meetings, competitions, events and esports. It’s safe to say that PCB has hit a home run in the sports park department. 2 0 2 4 V I S I T PA N A M A C I T Y B E A C H . C O M 7 7

PICKLEBALL SWEEPS THE BEACH SIMPLE, FUN, ACCESSIBLE AND SOCIABLE, it’s no wonder that pickleball has become widely recognized as the fastest-growing sport in the country. The game combines elements of tennis, badminton and pingpong, according to the USAPA, and is played — singles or doubles — on a badminton-size court with a modified tennis net. Paddles, larger than those for pingpong but smaller than a tennis racquet, are used to strike a plastic, perforated ball similar to a Wiffle ball. Players serve underhand and cross court. The serve must bounce once but never twice, and the “kitchen,” or the non-volley zone, is off limits. The game is typically played to a score of 11 or 15. Panama City Beach first implemented open play at Frank Brown Park’s indoor facility. Soon after, the Lyndell Complex saw expansion, replacing parking space for permanent courts. With increasing demand for the fun-for-all-ages sport, the number of public courts have continued to increase in PCB and the Publix Sports Park will soon be adding indoor courts to their repertoire as well. So gather the kids, parents and grandparents and hit the courts — pickleball is truly the sport for all! 2 0 2 4 V I S I T PA N A M A C I T Y B E A C H . C O M 7 9

REDISCOVER FAMILY & FRIENDS
Bring your next group event to the beach, PCB has just what you need BY KARI C. BARLOW
8 2 REAL.FUN.BEACH. 2024
In recent years, PCB tourism leaders have intentionally replaced college and university spring break activities with a more familyfriendly vibe. That transition has brought about additional chain hotels, new dining, shopping and attraction options, as well as the Publix Sports Park, added in recent years. As a result, the area is seeing a steady flow of family reunions. Th is segment of group visitors is primarily regional, traveling to PCB from Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, North and South Carolina and Virginia. Their preferred attraction is the beach itself, and their favored accommodation is the condominium.
And the fun does not have to stop at the water’s edge. Take your reunion on a dolphin tour, play nine holes at a premier golf club or relax on the deck of a beachside restaurant serving up world-class seafood. Here are few more ideas to ramp up your reunion: • Shop at Pier Park This massive, open-air retail destination has everything from local boutiques to big-name stores. Military reunions are also a longstanding tradition in PCB. Members of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines began meeting here with the advent of World War II veteran events.
STRATEGIZE IN PARADISE
PCB is also ideal for small group business. Four conference resorts offer 180,000 square feet of meeting space and 20,000 rooms are available for booking across the area’s numerous hotels and condominiums. As a full-service convention and visitors bureau, Visit Panama City Beach is also uniquely positioned to provide meeting planners from all market segments with a variety of services including site selection, request for proposal (RFP) development, assistance with housing, suggested itineraries and day trips, welcome packets and a staff table at your event to answer questions and provide materials about the area. At Embassy Suites by Hilton, enjoy Gulf of Mexico views from your seat
at the conference table. The resort hotel offers six meeting rooms and 255 guest rooms. Located directly on the beach and within a mile of Pier Park, employees will be all too pleased to meet in paradise. The best part? When the business is completed, the sparkling Gulf of Mexico is never far away. And you can’t forget the Southern hospitality. It shines through in PCB, whether you’re a friend or a stranger — it’s part of the package here.

But if you’re looking for a more personalized romantic getaway, try out one of these three-stop itineraries to suit your style.

Hop the shuttle over to Shell Island, a 7-mile stretch of undeveloped barrier island just off St. Andrews State Park. Be sure to pack lots of sunscreen, a cooler with plenty of hydrating beverages and an umbrella to cuddle under. Grab a drink and toast at sunset. After a full day lolling on the beach, it seems only right to toast the sunset. Imagine a cozy bonfire just for the two of you, a hammock to swing in the gentle breeze while listening to the ocean, and all the supplies for roasting s’mores.
