The new Information Technology Infrastructure: • The new IT Infrastructure links desktop workstations, network computers, LANs, and server computers in an enterprise network so that information can flow freely throughout different parts of the organization. • The enterprise network may also be linked to kiosks, point-of-sale(POS) terminals, PDAs, digital cell phones and PCs, and other mobile computing devices as well as to the internet using public infrastructure. • Customers, suppliers, and business partners may also be linked to the organization through this new IT infrastructure.
• Enterprise networking: An arrangement of the organization’s hardware, software, network, and data resources to put more computing power on the desktop and create a company-wide network linking many smaller networks. • Connectivity: A measure of how well computers and computerbased devices communicate and share information with one another without human intervention. • Models of connectivity: There are different models for achieving connectivity in telecommunication networks. The TCP/IP model was developed by the US Department of Defense in 1972 and is used in the internet. Its purpose was to help scientists link disparate computers. • TCP/IP( Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol): US Deptt. Of Defense reference model for linking different types of computers and networks, used in the internet.
TCP/IP has a five –layer reference model. These are 1. Application 2. Transmission Control Protocol(TCP) 3. Internet Protocol(IP) 4. Network Interface 5. Physical Net Host A Host B Applications Transport (TCP)

What is an internet and what do you meant by ISP? • INTERNET: International network of networks that is a collection of hundreds of thousands of private and public networks. • An internet Service Provider(ISP) is a commercial organization with a permanent connection to the internet that sells temporary connections to subscribers. • Individuals also can access the internet through such popular online services as America Online(AOL) and Microsoft network(MSN).
INTERNET TECHNOLOGY & SERVICES: • The internet is based on client/server technology. Individuals using the internet control what they do through client applications, such as Web browser software. All data, including e-mail messages and Web pages, are stored on servers. • A client uses the internet to request information from a particular Web server on a distant computer and the server sends the requested information back to the client via internet. • Internet Protocol Address: four-part numeric address indicating a unique computer location on the internet. • http//www.yahoo.com protocol domain • Domain name: the name identifying a unique node on the internet.
• Usenet: Forum in which people share information and ideas on a defined topic through large electronic bulletin boards where anyone can post messages on the topic for others to see and to which others can respond.
• Telnet: Network tool that allows someone to log on to one computer system while doing work on another. • Chatting: Live, interactive conversations over a public network. Chatting allows two or more people who are simultaneously connected to the internet to hold live, interactive conversations. • VoIP( Voice over IP) : Voice transmission using the Internet Protocol in a private intranet or WAN.
• http( hypertext transport protocol): The communications standard used to transfer pages on the Web. Defines how messages are formulated and transmitted.
• Home page: A world Wide Web text and graphical screen display that welcomes the user and explains the organization that has established the page. • Search engine: A tool locating specific sites or information on the internet. • WAP( Wireless Application Protocol): System protocols and technologies that lets cell phones and other wireless devices with tiny displays, lowbandwidth connections, and minimal memory access Web-based information and services.
