Add paddle boarding to your list of vacation activities, you’ll soon be hooked. After a class at The Royal Cancun, it’s time to explore the bay. Tequila time

Learn about the history and traditions woven around Mexico’s iconic spirits: tequila and mezcal, both distilled from the sugary juice extracted from the roasted piña or heart of different species of agave plant. During the Mexican Food & Spirit Pairing at Hacienda Sisal, you’ll sip several brands chosen to enhance the flavor of Mexican dishes. You’ll discover the difference between tequila blanco, reposado and añejo and by the end of the evening you’ll be able to distinguish the distinctive smoky flavor of mezcal. Cancun classics

Two of our signature restaurants are celebrating important milestones as enduring Royal Resorts favorites, veritable Cancun classics! Captain’s Cove has been serving up fresh seafood and spectacular sunset views in a waterfront setting for 37 years now and the El Conquistador fine dining experience and live music has been captivating members and guests for 38 years. Be sure to try them during your vacation.

Cocktail for a cause

Ask for the signature cocktail of the month at any of our restaurants and bars and for each one ordered a $5 peso donation will be made to the Royal Resorts Foundation to help change lives. In 2022, Cocktail for a Cause and Pizza for a Cause have raised $182,884 pesos in support of causes including children’s education and physiotherapy, cancer screening, conservation and the Employee Relief Fund.

New vacation flavors

All year round there are mouthwatering new flavors to try as part of Culinary Experiences by Royal Resorts. For the sixth year running, El Faro Grill at Grand Residences received a Wine Spectator award for excellence. Grand Residences was also victorious at the 29th annual World Travel Awards, being named Mexico’s Leading Hotel Residences for the second year in a row.

Green news

Reef building

Royal Resorts is participating in a global coral reef conservation initiative called Ocean Rescue Alliance and teamed up with a company called CCell Renovables in a pilot project to create an artificial reef at The Royal Cancun.

In September 2021, divers installed the metal structure which forms the base of the reef in the water under the wooden pier. Over the following months, the natural process of calcium carbonate sedimentation began, and the metal is now completely covered in the chalky white deposit which is the base for reef building and the algae which are food for marine life. A team of biologists will plant the fragments of live coral which will form coral colonies, transforming the structure into a living reef.

A camera transmits images so that the project team can monitor marine life. Sergeant majors, butterfly fish, blue tangs and juvenile angelfish have already been seen around the reef.

Artificial reefs become habitats for fish and other creatures such as sea urchins, sea fans, lobsters and crabs and can help alleviate pressure on beleaguered coral reefs around the world.

Welcome to the world

During the 2022 turtle nesting season, our dedicated conservation heroes, the Royal Resorts security guards, watched over 619 nests and released 59,956 hatchlings (as of late November) to begin life at sea.

Construcción de arrecifes

Royal Resorts está participando en una iniciativa global de conservación de arrecifes llamada Ocean Rescue Alliance y se asoció con la empresa CCell Renovables en un proyecto piloto para crear un arrecife artificial en The Royal Cancun.

En septiembre de 2021, los buzos instalaron la estructura metálica que forma la base del arrecife en el agua debajo del muelle. En los meses siguientes, comenzó el proceso natural de sedimentación de carbonato de calcio y el metal ya está totalmente cubierto por el depósito blanco, que es la base para la construcción del arrecife y por algas que provee a los peces de alimento. Un equipo de biólogos plantará los fragmentos de corales vivos que formarán colonias de coral, transformando la estructura en un arrecife vivo.

Una cámara transmite imágenes para que el equipo del proyecto pueda monitorear la vida marina. Alrededor del arrecife ya han sido observados sargentos mayor, peces mariposa, cirujanos azules y peces ángel.

Los arrecifes artificiales se convierten en hábitats para peces y otras especies como erizos de mar, langostas y cangrejos y pueden ayudar a disminuir la presión sobre los asediados arrecifes de coral alrededor del mundo.

Bienvenidas al mundo

Durante la temporada de anidación de las tortugas en 2022, nuestros dedicados héroes de la conservación, los guardias de seguridad de Royal Resorts, han cuidado 619 nidos y liberado 59,956 crías (estimado a noviembre) para comenzar su vida en el mar.

With a history spanning thousands of years, the country’s extraordinarily rich culture has been influenced by its ancient, vast and diverse indigenous heritage, the Spanish conquest, and a mosaic of landscapes, climates and ecosystems. This exceptional combination of factors all contributed to the creation of the “traditional Mexican cuisine,” which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010 in the Intangible Culture category. Let’s take a journey through time to discover its history and the origin of some of Mexico’s signature dishes.

To understand how these elements influenced Mexico’s gastronomic culture, we must go back to the pre-Hispanic period, where almost 10,000 years ago, maize, or corn, was domesticated by early indigenous farmers. It soon became a staple in their diet, along with beans and different types of chili peppers, which were complemented by avocados, squash, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and a variety of other vegetables, fruit, mushrooms, herbs and seeds, along with turkey, fish, and even some insects.

During the Spanish conquest, in the early 16th century, and throughout the Colonial period, the new settlers imported cooking techniques from Spain and ingredients from Europe and the Middle East, including beef, pork, chicken, lamb, cheese, milk, wheat, rice, sugar, olive oil and an assortment of fruit, vegetables and spices. This cultural exchange led to the creation of recipes combining local and foreign ingredients and the emergence of exciting new dishes filled with enticing flavors, textures and aromas.

Para entender cómo éstos influenciaron a la cultura gastronómica de México, debemos retroceder al período prehispánico donde, hace casi 10,000 años, el maíz fue domesticado por los primeros agricultores. Pronto se convirtió en un alimento básico en su dieta, junto con los frijoles y diferentes tipos de chiles, los que se complementaron con aguacates, calabazas, tomates, camotes y una variedad de otros vegetales, frutas, hongos, hierbas y semillas, así como pavo, pescado e, incluso, insectos.

During the 19th century, after the country’s Independence (1810- 1821), there was an influx of French, Lebanese, German and Italian immigrants who began making their own bread, pastries and beer, to which Mexicans quickly took a liking.

Over time—and due in part to the environmental and geographical diversity coupled with each region’s own history and local customs—Mexico’s 31 states and capital city began defining their own “personality” and cultural traits, including traditional dress and recipes. Many states have beaches, lakes or rivers, others have deserts or marshlands, and some have mountains or plains, chilly cloud forests or tropical jungles. Each area has its own native vegetation and wildlife, and all these factors contributed to the gastronomic riches in which every Mexican takes pride. It is fair to say, however, that many of its most sophisticated recipes – including chiles en nogada and the sweet-savory mole poblano –were created in convent kitchens for the upper classes before they became a vital part of the country’s culinary traditions.

Although there are many exceptions, antojitos are usually corn-based and served with vibrant salsas. Traditionally “street food” found on market stalls and food stands or sold by mobile street vendors, they also appear on Mexican restaurant menus where you will find unfamiliar words like tlacoyos, gorditas, salbutes, panuchos, tlayudas, huaraches, sopes and tostadas, along with the worldrenowned tacos... And the list goes on.

In the Mexican Caribbean, you’ll savor a wealth of dishes from all over the country, and the local cuisine, which has been strongly influenced by the neighboring State of Yucatan’s unique gastronomic heritage. DISHES TO TRY

Tamales: there are countless types of these savory, sweet or spicy corn dough cakes. They can be filled with different meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables and seeds, and are steamed in corn husks or banana leaves.

Cochinita pibil: A Yucatán classic, pork marinated in orange juice with annatto seeds and other spices and wrapped in banana leaves to be roasted in an underground pit. Served with corn tortillas, pickled onions and habanero chile.

Aguachile: From the Pacific coast, shrimp marinated in lime juice with chile peppers, salt and pepper, and served with sliced cucumbers and onions.

Mole: Rich and spicy sauces made with different chili peppers, nuts, spices and fruits. The best-known are from Puebla and Oaxaca, but there are more than 50 varieties in Mexico.

Chiles en nogada: Poblano chiles stuffed with ground beef and pork, nuts, fruits and spices, and topped with a walnut sauce, pomegranate seeds and parsley. From Puebla,

this dish is served in August and September.

Pozole: With pre-Columbian origins, hominy stew made with pork, and garnished with lettuce, onion, garlic, radishes, avocado, and limes.

Tacos al pastor: Roasted pork marinated in red sauce and served on corn tortillas, with roasted pineapple, chopped onion, cilantro, limes and salsas.

Antojitos: Tacos, tlayudas, huaraches, gorditas… the list is endless, they are usually made with corn dough, and topped with meat, vegetables, spicy sauces and cheeses.

Tequila and Mezcal: Mexico’s most famous distilled spirits originally produced in Jalisco and Oaxaca. Both are made from the juice extracted from agave plants, but tequila can only be made from the blue agave.

Chiles: The consumption of chiles dates back thousands of years. Ranging from mild chiles to the extra hot habanero, they add heat and flavor to dishes and form the base for a variety of salsas.

Tamales: Existen cientos de tamales en todo el país. Pueden ser salados, dulces o picantes, rellenos de diferentes carnes, quesos, frutas, vegetales y semillas, y son cocidos al vapor envueltos en hojas de elote o de plátano.

Cochinita pibil: Un platillo clásico yucateco, carne de puerco marinada en jugo de naranja agria con semillas de achiote y otras especias y envuelto en hojas de plátano y cocido en un pib u hoyo en el suelo. Se sirve con tortillas de maíz, cebolla morada curtida y salsa de chile habanero.

Aguachile: Originario de la costa noroeste de México, son camarones marinados en jugo de limón con chiles, sal y pimienta, y servidos con pepino y cebollas picados.

Moles: Salsas espesas, ricas y picantes hechas con diferentes chiles, nueces, especias y frutas. Los moles más conocidos son los de Puebla y Oaxaca, aunque en México existen más de 50 variedades.

Chiles en nogada: Chiles poblanos rellenos con carne de res y puerco, nueces, frutas y especias, y cubiertos con una salsa de nuez, semillas de

granada y perejil. Originarios de Puebla, este platillo se prepara en agosto y septiembre.

Pozole: Caldo de maíz blanco de origen precolombino con carne de puerco, y acompañado con lechuga picada, cebolla, ajo, rábanos, aguacate y limón.

Tacos al pastor: Carne de puerco marinada en una salsa roja y asada en una varilla, servida en tortillas de maíz con piña asada, cebolla y cilantro picados, limón y salsas.

Antojitos: Tacos, tlayudas, huaraches, gorditas… la lista de antojitos hechos con masa de maíz es interminable. Se sirven con carne, vegetales, salsas picantes y quesos.

Tequila y Mezcal: Las bebidas destiladas mexicanas por excelencia, que originariamente eran producidas en Jalisco y Oaxaca. Ambas están hechas del jugo extraído de plantas de agave, pero el tequila sólo puede estar elaborado de agave azul.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Deborah converted her two Royal Sands July weeks into Points at the last minute. She explains, “We had concerns about travel, so rather than losing our weeks we were able to use our Points to vacation in 2021. The Signature Club has enhanced our vacation time.”

Sheltered and serene, Grand Residences offers an array of amenities, fine dining and every indulgence, as Catherine Gordon discovers

SITTING ON THE BEACHFRONT balcony of my suite at Grand Residences, with the soundtrack of the waves gently crashing against the shore, there was only one problem, I didn’t want to leave. I was sun-kissed and relaxed, I’d enjoyed delicious cuisine and I was sparkling clean after being jet washed in my suite’s mosaic-lined power shower. I had that ‘living my best life’ feeling you only experience while staying in one of the Riviera Maya’s most exclusive resorts.

Located on a quiet stretch of palm-fringed, powderywhite sandy beach, south of the fishing town of Puerto Morelos, Grand Residences isn’t exactly a boutique hotel, but it isn’t a huge resort either. It’s the perfect size. Radiating from a central infinity pool, surrounded by lush tropical greenery and peace lily flowers, the resort is on a cozy, walkable scale. It has a relaxed and quiet vibe, and everything has a distinct touch of luxury.

My spacious suite was full of treasures, from a bottle of artisan Mezcal from Oaxaca to Bulgari® soaps in the bathroom. Other welcome treats included a turquoise necklace, a wide-brimmed sun hat and a beach bag complete with a decorative charm. The spacious suites have a Mexican hacienda theme to them, with earthy tones, large chunky mirrors and carved wooden wall hangings. Crisp white sheets cover a cotton wool-soft bed I could dissolve into at night. The sea view showed off the best of the Caribbean, with green and blue hues reaching out to the horizon, only punctuated by the occasional fishing boat and the colorful sails of a passing paraglider.

I wasted no time in getting a seat at the Heaven Beach Bar, embracing the warm sea breeze, hot sun and salsa music. Barmen were busy mixing neon Caribbean cocktails, while I ordered a fresh limonada and crunchy fish tacos with a kicking chipotle sauce. I could see a family happily playing by the water’s edge, the father helping his children swim in the shallows. This resort is a rarity, a luxury location that welcomes families of all generations. “We find that after the pandemic, families are looking forward to spending time together, from young children up to the grandparents, they are really looking forward to that family quality time,” explains Sales Manager, Lourdes Ojeda.

After lunch, I grabbed a seat by the pool. Spoiled by the pool concierge who created a nest for me with a towel encrusted sunbed and chilled water to sip on. I could see that the resort expertly blends adult areas with family spaces. There’s a pool for grown-ups with a swim-up bar, leading down to a shallow kids pool and then finally a family pool, where there was a rather exerting aqua aerobics class going on. Meanwhile, those who preferred sandy feet and an uninterrupted ocean gaze, positioned themselves on the beach.

As the afternoon cooled, I took a stroll around the resort to check out what else was going on. Passing the Kids Club, I could see giggling children enjoying a face painting session and I stopped to say hello to Julio, a local artisan whose ceramic painting sessions are popular with families. Sentada en el balcón de mi suite frente a la playa en Grand Residences, con el sonido de las olas rompiendo suavemente contra la orilla, sólo había un problema, no quería irme. Estaba bañada por el sol y relajada, había disfrutado de una deliciosa comida y estaba impecablemente limpia después de un baño a presión en la regadera del lujoso baño de mi suite revestido con mosaicos. Tuve esa sensación de ‘viviendo mi mejor vida’ que sólo se experimenta cuando uno se hospeda en uno de los resorts más exclusivos de la Riviera Maya.

Ubicado en una tranquila playa de arena blanca bordeada de palmeras, en el pueblo de pescadores de Puerto Morelos, Grand Residences no es exactamente un hotel boutique, pero tampoco es

un enorme resort. Tiene el tamaño perfecto. Irradiando desde una alberca central de borde infinito, rodeada de exuberante vegetación tropical y lirios de paz, el resort es de una escala acogedora y transitable. Tiene un ambiente relajado y tranquilo, y todo tiene un distintivo toque de lujo.

Mi espaciosa suite estaba llena de tesoros, desde una botella de mezcal artesanal de Oaxaca hasta jabones Bulgari® en el baño. Otros obsequios de bienvenida incluyen un collar de turquesa, un sombrero para el sol y una bolsa de playa con un dije decorativo. Las amplias suites cuentan con un tema de hacienda mexicana, con tonos terrosos, grandes espejos y tapices de pared de madera tallada. Frescas sábanas blancas cubren una cama de algodón suave en la que podía disolverme por la

I popped into the lobby where guests were tucking into a delicious afternoon tea on the elegant terrace, while inside others cooled off at the long antique wooden bar. Needing supplies, I went upstairs to the Gourmet Market that stocks everything you could want for your suite’s modern kitchen, be it fine wines or fresh fruit nibbles. As I left, I passed by the gym where Gilmer, the in-house personal trainer, looked ready to put me through my paces, had I remembered to pack my sports gear. And there’s also a relaxing spa, not to be missed for massages, facials and pedicures.

That evening, I headed to the resort’s international restaurant, El Faro, for dinner. There I met Executive Chef Guido de la Mora, whose responsibility it is to keep guests’ culinary desires satisfied. If you take one of his popular cookery classes, you can find out the secrets behind his delicious creations. “My secret right now is the white mole,” divulges Chef Guido. “In Mexico, there are more than 100 different moles. But sometimes guests only know one, the black mole, spicy with chocolate. But we have many varieties, like the white mole, made of almonds, peanuts, sesame, mezcal and banana. it’s another kind of texture. It’s totally different.”

I lucked out and dined at El Faro on its French-themed night. “We have a new menu with traditional French dishes,” explains Chef Guido. “Like beef bourguignon or Chicken a la Normande, which is creamy with cider and apples, so it’s really nice. Of course, we have foie gras, plus the special today is duck confit.” So, the duck confit it was. When it arrived, it was served with pureed carrots and topped with mushrooms and zucchini, alongside a maple syrup reduction sauce. If it is possible for something to be both crispy and melt in the mouth, this dish was it. It was simply delicious.

One of the standout qualities I noticed during my stay at Grand Residences is the insanely high standard of the cuisine. The ingredients are astounding; Brie cheese from France, serrano ham from Spain, turkey ham from New York… And this is also the place to get adventurous and try Mexican recipes. Seek out the traditional preHispanic toasted pumpkin seed and roasted tomato dip served at the Heaven Beach Bar, called Sikil Pak in Mayan. Or at breakfast in El Faro, chefs will prepare freshly made corn tortilla quesadillas topped with guacamole and tomato salsa. For serious lovers of Mexican food there is also Flor de Canela, a colorful and welcoming Mexican family restaurant.

On my last morning at the resort, I wake up absurdly early and have the beach to myself, so I walk its curved length, with pelicans swooping above. A fleet of fishing boats huddle together as they head out to sea. By the time I get back to the resort, the staff are busy preparing for the day ahead. As they pass me by, they stop to make friendly conversation. “When you come to Grand Residences, you feel welcomed in a warm way,” Resort Manager Daniela Trava explains. “We are really glad that you are here, and it shows. It’s something that’s

Los cantineros estaban ocupados mezclando los cócteles caribeños mientras ordenaba una limonada fresca y crujientes tacos de pescado con una salsa picante de chipotle. Podía ver a una familia jugando felizmente a la orilla del agua, el padre ayudando a sus hijos a nadar en la parte baja. Este resort es una rareza, un rincón de lujo que recibe familias de todas las generaciones. “Encontramos que después de la pandemia, las familias esperan pasar más tiempo juntos, desde los niños pequeños hasta los abuelos, realmente esperan ese tiempo de calidad familiar,” explica la Gerente de Ventas Lourdes Ojeda. Después de almorzar, me senté junto a la alberca. Consentida por el concierge de la alberca, quien formó un nido para mí con un camastro cubierto con una toalla y agua helada para tomar. Pude observar que el resort combina hábilmente áreas para adultos con espacios familiares. Cuenta con una alberca para adultos con un bar en el agua, que conduce a una alberca de poca profundidad para niños y finalmente a una alberca familiar, donde se realizaba una agotadora clase de aeróbics acuático. Por otro lado, los que preferían tener los pies en la arena y una vista ininterrumpida del mar, se ubicaban en la playa.

A medida que refrescaba la tarde, di un paseo alrededor del resort para ver qué más estaba sucediendo. Pasé por el Kids Club, donde pude ver a los sonrientes niños disfrutando una sesión de pinta caritas y me detuve para saludar a Julio, un artesano local cuyas sesiones de pintura en cerámica son populares con las familias. En la alberca para nado, observé a varios nadadores recorriéndola de arriba abajo. Entré al lobby donde los huéspedes disfrutaban de un delicioso té por la tarde en la elegante terraza, mientras que otros se refrescaban en la barra de madera antigua. Ya que necesitaba provisiones, subí al Gourmet Market que contiene todo lo que se puede desear para preparar en la moderna cocina de la suite, ya sean vinos finos, bocadillos o frutas frescas. hubiera acordado de empacar mi equipo deportivo. Y también hay un relajante spa, imprescindible para masajes, faciales y pedicures.

Para cenar esa noche, me dirigí al restaurante internacional del resort, El Faro. Ahí conocí al Chef Ejecutivo Guido de la Mora, cuya responsabilidad es mantener satisfechos los deseos culinarios de los huéspedes. Si toma una de sus populares clases de cocina, puede descubrir los secretos detrás de sus deliciosas creaciones. “Mi secreto hoy en día es el mole blanco,” dice el Chef Guido. “En México, se cuenta con más de 100 moles diferentes, aunque algunas veces los huéspedes sólo conocen uno, el mole negro, condimentado con chocolate. Pero tenemos muchas variedades, como el mole blanco, hecho de almendras, cacahuates, ajonjolí, mezcal y plátano, tiene otro tipo de textura, es totalmente diferente.”

Tuve suerte y cené en El Faro en su noche tema francesa. “Contamos con un nuevo menú con platillos tradicionales franceses,” explica el Chef Guido. “Como el filete bourguignon o el pollo a la Normandía, el cual es cremoso con sidra y manzanas, por lo que es realmente bueno. Por

supuesto, tenemos el foie gras, además del especial de hoy que es confit de pato.” Así que, disfruté el confit de pato. Cuando llegó, estaba servido con puré de zanahoria y cubierto con champiñones y calabazas, junto con una reducción de jarabe de maple. Si es posible que algo fuera crujiente y se derritiera en la boca al mismo tiempo, este platillo lo fue. Estaba simplemente delicioso.

Una de las cualidades sobresalientes que noté durante mi estancia en Grand Residences es el nivel increíblemente alto de la cocina. Los ingredientes son extraordinarios; queso Brie de Francia, jamón serrano de España, jamón de pavo de New York… Y este también es el lugar para aventurarse y probar recetas mexicanas. Busque el tradicional dip prehispánico hecho de semillas de calabaza tostadas y tomates asados que se sirve en el Heaven Beach Bar, llamado sikil pak en maya. O durante el desayuno en El Faro, los chefs le preparan quesadillas con tortillas de maíz recién hechas, cubiertas de guacamole y salsa de tomate. Para los amantes de la comida mexicana, también está Flor de Canela, un colorido y acogedor restaurante mexicano familiar.

Members and staff look back on 30 years of The Royal Islander

UN LUGAR LLAMADO HOGAR SOCIOS Y ANFITRIONES RECUERDAN 30 AÑOS DE THE ROYAL ISLANDER

The Royal Islander holds a special place in the hearts of many a Royal Resorts member. A secluded spot for families and friends to slow down the pace, enjoy the Mexican Caribbean and spend time together in a beautiful beach setting surrounded by friends who greet them with a smile each time they return. One member describes it as “the place where I really understood the meaning of the words welcome home.” Another says, “There are so many memories to treasure, my family grew up here.”

Construction at The Royal Islander started in 1991 and the first phase opened in 1993. The smallest of the resorts with 179 villas, it quickly became a family favorite, captivating members with its sweeping views of the Cancun shoreline.

Jorge López from the Sales & Marketing department remembers the early days, “I was showing a couple a beachfront villa one day. The wife instantly fell in love with it, but her husband preferred an ocean-view unit. As they talked, a school of 12 dolphins swam by. It was 9:30 a.m., the turquoise sea was mirror-calm, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and there were dolphins… it was magical. They ended up choosing the beachfront villa, and the husband said to me, “Jorge, there is just one thing I would like to know. How much did it cost you to rent the dolphins?”

Patricia Koepsel fell in love with the sparkling waters of the Caribbean on her first visit to Cancun. She joined Royal Resorts in 1991 and has 12 weeks at The Royal Islander and The Royal Sands. “The Royal Islander is my favorite resort,” she says, “it’s family oriented and has such special memories for me. I celebrate my birthday here and I turned 94 this June! We also have a family get-together for Thanksgiving and there were 32 of us last year.”

Joining Royal Resorts in 1984 at The Royal Cancun, Richard Peura owns seven weeks at The Royal Islander, The Royal Sands and The Royal Haciendas and says, “We tell people that we are serial vacationers with one plane ticket, as we change villas every week!

“The Royal Islander is our family gathering resort.” He adds, “We have brought so many friends and family down over the years. Four years ago, we scheduled a family photo shoot at the resort during our vacation with our five daughters to commemorate our 40th anniversary. It holds poignant memories of precious family time together as one of our daughters passed away last year. Now our grandchildren enjoy the resort with us too.

“I think of the lasting friendships we have made with fellow members and staff,” he says. “The bartenders and waiters like Samuel, Carlos and Willy are as much a part of our vacation enjoyment as anyone else. Whenever we go fishing, Rodrigo, the head waiter at Cayo Largo, will prepare our catch of the day for us. Willy and I share a passion for National Geographic, and I always bring him the magazines.

“We think the service at Royal Resorts is superb, they love welcoming people,” he adds. “It’s been a wonderful 30 years. I thank the staff for making our vacation time so enjoyable.”

The Royal Islander Advisory Council member David Sterling stayed at The Royal Caribbean with friends in 1992 and reminisces, “I enjoyed the ambiance so much that I kept asking my friends about the Royal Resorts vacation concept. They referred me to their sales representative, and I soon purchased a penthouse unit at The Royal Islander. I remember Buildings 7 and 6 were under construction, but the pool was complete. I stood on my villa terrace, gazed at the sea and I never looked back.”

“My wife and I love The Royal Islander,” David adds, “It is smaller and somehow it feels homier. We now spend at least three months here each year and it really is our second home. Everyone makes us feel so welcome.

David was one of the first COVID-19 cases in 2020. “I was quarantined at The Royal Islander in the fall and was so well looked after by Joselyn and the other managers who would call me every day to chat. Twelve hours after I tested negative, Hurricane Delta blew in and we were evacuated to a hurricane shelter. Hurricane Zeta followed and we stayed for that one too, so in 2020, I weathered COVID-19, two hurricanes and a tropical storm!

Siempre que vayamos de pesca, Rodrigo, el capitán de meseros en Cayo Largo, preparará la pesca del día. Willy y yo compartimos nuestra pasión por National Geographic, y cuando regreso siempre le traigo los últimos seis números.

“It’s always been a lot of fun in The Royal Islander. Jesus, one of the security guards joins me on my daily walk through the resort and along the beach and has become my exercise buddy. Some of our other resort friends are Willy and Rodrigo, the hardest working guys in Cancun; Julio and Karina, Angel, Tomás, Santos, Fermin and Sammy Burger. We will miss them all.”

Lasting friendships

Fernando Chan, the Activities Coordinator says, “I came here from Mérida to find a job and I found a home. Working at The Royal Islander since 1999 has been the best thing in my life. I have made so many friends over the years, like Melinda Groom and her family. I have known their son Cole since he was eight years old, and we’ve even been to watch the local baseball team together. We have had so many good times together, family moments, even in difficult situations like Hurricane Wilma.

“I am so grateful that all these amazing families have been part of my life and chose to vacation with us all these years. Thank you, you make this special for us.”

Rodrigo de Jesus Huchim, the head waiter at Cayo Largo, joined Royal Resorts in 1988, starting at The Royal Mayan. Stints in Captain’s Cove and Tradewinds followed and in 2000 he transferred to Cayo Largo. He says, “Royal Resorts and The Royal Islander are my family and I have so many memories, including saving the life of one guest who choked on a piece of carrot.

“Longtime members know that I like to cook for them, and they ask me to prepare pasta dishes, chicken or the catch of the day after a fishing trip –my specialties are grouper in amandine or ajillo sauce.

“I remember one very early start to the day. I must have made a mistake setting my alarm and my watch said 4:15 a.m. when I woke up. Everything was so quiet when I arrived at the resort, the only sounds were the cries of the owls that nest in the buildings. The security guard said to me, “what on earth are you doing here, it’s only 3 a.m.! I went to the restaurant, started setting the tables and put the coffee on. When the rest of my crew arrived, they poked fun at me for being beyond punctual.”

“We spend more time at work than we do at home, and it feels like one big family. My 33 years at Royal Resorts are full of memories, I’m so happy to have met so many of you and I hope you won’t forget me.”

Housekeeping Manager Victor Méndez Pech is also a 26-year Royal Resorts veteran. He says “I love bumping into the members I first met when I used to clean their villas, like the González family from Mexicali who always stop by to say hello. There’s a family ambiance in the resort and a real bond of friendship, of being at home, and the feeling is contagious. It means everything to me.”

“Estuve en cuarentena en The Royal Islander en el otoño y estuve tan bien atendido por Joselyn y los otros gerentes. Me llamaban diario para platicar. Doce horas después de que resulté negativo, azotó el Huracán Delta y nos evacuaron a un refugio de huracanes en el centro. Le siguió el Huracán Zeta, y nos quedamos durante ese también, ¡así es que, en 2020, superé el COVID-19, dos huracanes y una tormenta tropical!

“Siempre ha sido muy divertido en The Royal Islander. Jesús, un guardia de seguridad me acompañaba en mi caminata diaria por el resort y a lo largo de la playa y se convirtió en mi compañero de ejercicio. Algunos de nuestros otros amigos del resort son Willy y Rodrigo, las personas más trabajadoras de Cancún; Julio y Karina, que se casaron este año, Ángel, Tomás, Santos, Fermín y Sammy Burger. Eunice May Rejón has been working in Housekeeping at The Royal Islander for 27 years and says “I have got to know many of our members over the years. They always greet me, and some would bring me gifts even after I moved to another part of the resort and was no longer cleaning their villa. I have a habit of whistling softly while I work and a member called Rita gave me the nickname “La Chifladora” (the whistler), another, Laura Galván always asks for me to clean their villa. I thank God for all of them and I’ll always remember them.”

With her warm smile María Angela Tuz Kauil gets glowing reviews in Tripadvisor and Guudjob for her work. She joined Housekeeping at The Royal Islander 20 years ago, always attending the level 3 beachfront units in Building 26. She says, “One young man I’ve known since he was a child left me a lovely letter saying that I will always be part of his family. Another member who works in IT in the United States brings me a computer every year so that my children can study, another always asks me about the Mayan language and traditions, the ties we have are amazing.”

As one of the bellboys, Omar Herrera Martin is a familiar face. He has been with the company for 25 years and sums up, “It is always wonderful to see our friends. I know that we are part of the reason that they choose to vacation here year after year. It is a great feeling, that we are friends, we are family.”

MY ALARM SOUNDS in the dark and I wake up with excitement. I open up my tent flap and pop outside in my pajamas, bare feet digging into the soft white sand. The sun isn’t up yet, you can still see some stars in the deep purple sky, the moon shining bright and a hint of violet on the horizon. I head to the edge of the sea and breathe in the fresh air and close my eyes.

I am camping on the beach at Xpu-Há. Getting up early is a must, the Riviera Maya sunrises can’t be beat and the chance to encounter a mama sea turtle laying her eggs is good during the months of May to September. I sit under a palm tree and wait. By now the sun is just about to come up, the fluffy clouds shine purple and pink and orange and on the horizon over the sea I see the edge of the sun peeking through, its rays hitting the clouds and setting the sky on fire. I take a million photos and videos and reels for Instagram then put my phone away to just soak it all in. The gifts of the Riviera Maya in the early morning hours are worth setting your alarm for. I feel a whole lot of gratitude. With the whole day ahead of me and the Riviera Maya at my fingertips, I have got to make some tough choices. Snorkeling is my number one priority but where? Do I head south to Xel-Há and Tulum or north to Puerto Morelos?

Xel-Há is a great way to spend an entire day, I love the “all inclusive” aspect of not having to worry about gear or food or drinks and the setting is spectacular for snorkeling. One of my favorite weekend adventures is getting to the Tulum ruins early then spending the rest of the day at Xel-Há snorkeling to my heart’s content. Xel-Há is one of the

Tomo un millón de fotos, videos y reels para Instagram y luego guardo mi teléfono para admirarlo todo. Los regalos de la Riviera Maya en horas de la madrugada merecen que pongas tu despertador. Snorkeling in Puerto Morelos is more what I am looking for today, so I decide to head north and find myself a local panga. The friendly captains and crew wait on the beach by their small boats to take adventurous tourists out to the reef. I negotiate my price, board the panga called La Luna and spend the next couple of hours enjoying the underwater world through mask and snorkel.

The Mesoamerican Reef is the centerpiece of Riviera Maya attractions, the second largest reef in the world and the perfect place to marvel at abundant marine life. It reaches from Cancun in the north to Honduras in the south and visitors to the Riviera Maya are blessed to have the reef right at their fingertips. Immersing yourself in the crystalline waters to discover a colorful world of corals and tropical species is an unforgettable and unmissable experience.

Back on dry land I grab lunch at one of the many beach clubs in Puerto Morelos. The catch of the day literally just got off the boat and I savor the whole fish with dashes of garlic and lemon. I refresh with a cold agua fresca of jamaica (pronounced “ha-my-cuh”) made from the delicate flowers of the hibiscus bush. It’s a must when lunching by the sea in the Riviera Maya.

The Riviera Maya afternoon was made for adventure and now that I am fueled up and refreshed, I make my move to the jungle. The ”Cenote Route” near Puerto Morelos is an untouched jungle paradise hiding all kinds of adventures amidst the lush flora. A drive down the route looking for fun is a great way to spend an afternoon. I pull into the long dirt road leading to one of the many small sites along the road with a sign reading “Cenote”.

A cenote is a natural limestone sinkhole that develops over thousands of years. The Yucatan Peninsula is home to an estimated 10,000 cenotes, each with their own unique characteristics. The oldest cenotes are open to the sky, with the cool waters reflecting the clouds and the lush canopy of trees. Young cenotes are in totally enclosed caves with jaw dropping landscapes of stalactites and stalagmites. Snorkeling and swimming through an underground cave is a must in the Riviera Maya!

I descend the rustic stairs and feel the air temperature changing, growing cooler with each step into the underworld. The view when I hit bottom literally takes my breath away though I have seen it many times before. Cenotes in the Riviera Maya never cease to amaze.

Sun shines through a small hole in the rocky ceiling of stalactites, a ribbon of light that lands on the water’s surface and beyond, streaks continuing underwater in a marvelous display of nature.

Feeling blessed, refreshed and infused with the love of nature and the Riviera Maya I towel off and head back south to my tent on the beach of Xpu Há. I watch the sun go down and the moon rise over the sea and think about tomorrow and another day for adventure.

Con todo el día por delante y la Riviera Maya al alcance de mis manos, tengo que tomar algunas decisiones difíciles. Practicar el esnórquel es mi prioridad número uno, pero ¿Dónde? ¿Me dirijo al sur hacia Xel-Há y Tulum o al norte, a Puerto Morelos?

Ir a Xel-Há es una excelente manera de pasar el día, me encanta el concepto de “todo incluido” al no tener que preocuparme por equipo o alimentos y bebidas y el lugar es espectacular para el esnórquel. Una de mis aventuras favoritas del fin de semana es visitar primero el sitio arqueológico de Tulum y luego pasar el resto del día en XelHá practicando el esnórquel a mi antojo. Xel-Há es una de las mejores maneras para que la familia disfrute los regalos del Caribe mexicano, un lugar increíble para los niños. Hacer esnórquel en Puerto Morelos es lo que estoy buscando hacer hoy, así que decido dirigirme al norte y conseguirme una panga local. Los amables capitanes y la tripulación esperan en la playa junto a sus pequeñas embarcaciones para llevar a los turistas aventureros hacia el arrecife. Negocié el precio, me subí a la panga llamada “La Luna” y pasé las siguientes dos horas disfrutando el mundo submarino a través del visor y el esnórquel.

El Arrecife Mesoamericano es la pieza central de las atracciones en la Riviera Maya, el segundo arrecife más largo del mundo y el lugar perfecto para maravillarse de la abundante vida marina. I CLIMB TO THE TOP OF THE HILL IN UXMAL crowned by the Palacio del Gobernador and gaze at the richly carved frieze of masks and snakes and the temples spread out below in southern Yucatán’s World Heritage Site. Swallows dip under the stone doorways to feed their nestlings in ancient vaults where kings once resided. The sigh of the breeze is the only sound and I have the sensation of embarking on a journey into the past. This feeling of mystery and awe is something I have felt in every Maya city that I have visited over the years. These masterpieces of art and architecture head the list of marvels to be seen in the Maya World, but this region of southeast Mexico is also rich in natural wonders, colonial churches, palaces and fortresses and the vibrant communities of today’s Maya, the proud keepers of timeless traditions. The Mexican Caribbean is the gateway to this world, accessible by air and road and eventually by rail as the Maya Train project takes shape. Thousands of archaeological sites dot the landscape and while most still lie under a mantle of jungle awaiting exploration, those that have been restored are truly awe-inspiring. They are the legacy of one of the most advanced civilizations ever to flourish in the Americas. Temple builders, seafarers, gifted artists, stargazers, mathematicians and scribes, the ancient Maya forged a network of city-states throughout southeastern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, western Honduras and El Salvador that reached its peak between AD 200 and 900.

Mysteries of the Mayab

Heralded as a masterpiece of architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright, Uxmal is the gateway to the Puuc Route, a chain of ancient cities that share its World Heritage listing, and distinctive artistic style characterized by ornate friezes and masks depicting the rain god Chaac. The Pyramid of the Magician dominates the skyline and the richly carved facades of the palaces in the Nun’s Quadrangle are one of the Maya World’s treasures. haciendas and a chain of historic Maya villages with colonial churches known as the Convent Route.

Whenever I want to explore Yucatán, I head for Mérida, the state capital. Founded by the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo in 1542 on the site of an earlier Maya city called T’ho, it is steeped in history and tradition. Once you have spent several days strolling through the colonial heart visiting churches, museums and mansions, it is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding area. To the east lie the twin colonial towns of Valladolid and Izamal, site of a bright yellow convent built on top of a Maya pyramid. There are more ancient Maya cities like world-famous Chichén Itzá, also a World Heritage Site, and Ek Balam. The landscape is peppered with cenotes (sinkholes) and caves. Ría Lagartos, the Gulf coast Biosphere Reserve is home to thousands of flamingos. On the west coast of the Yucatán Peninsula is Celestún Biosphere Reserve and between them both lie miles and miles of shell-strewn shoreline and scattered fishing communities.

Between the jungle and the sea

From the pyramids and ball courts deep in the jungle at Cobá to clifftop temples at Tulum on the Riviera Maya coast, Quintana Roo is full of Maya sites. In the south, the land once sustained more than a million inhabitants in cities like Kohunlich and Dzibanche and there is evidence of ancient irrigation and terrace farming.

A visit to Quintana Roo’s archaeological sites is an opportunity to learn about history and be at one with nature. In Coba, I follow a shimmering blue butterfly to a cluster of buildings under a tangle of jungle creepers and tree roots. In Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a canal through the mangroves dredged by Maya traders more than a thousand years ago leads to a tiny temple and then on to the Caribbean coast. I marvel at those intrepid traders who braved coral reefs and tempests to bring feathers, gold and jade from Central America and carry them overland to cities in the Yucatán.

Beyond the glorious beaches of Quintana Roo, nature beckons. The magnificent coral kingdom of the Mesoamerican Reef and the islands of Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Contoy and Holbox lie offshore. In the Riviera Maya, an incredible secret world is hidden deep in the limestone, a network of cenotes and flooded caves where divers have discovered the longest underground rivers on the planet and the remains of nomadic hunter gatherers and prehistoric animals more than 12,000 years old.

Bacalar Lagoon is a vision in turquoise and a patchwork of biosphere reserves protects the state’s jungles and wetlands where jaguars still roam, and birds take to the air in a splash of color.

In the center of the state, Maya villages are guardians of ancient traditions and are ready to share them with visitors through Maya Ka’an community tours.

of Campeche, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the late 17th century, walls and ramparts were built to protect this settlement from the pirates who preyed on galleons laden with the prized palo de tinte or logwood, which yielded a rich brown dye. Several of these forts are now museums and the largest, San Miguel, also displays Campeche’s extraordinary Maya treasures, including jade death masks from Calakmul and clay figurines from the island of Jaina.

From the tiered temples at Edzná to mighty Calakmul in the south, the Maya left their imprint on the landscape. One of the largest archaeological sites in the Maya World, Calakmul was a regional power between 250 BC and AD 700. More than 6,000 buildings have been found to date, along with funerary offerings of jade and ceramics and 120 stelae telling a story of the ruling dynasty, its alliances and military conquests. Calakmul is a World Heritage Site and the Biosphere Reserve that shares its name forms part of the second largest jungle reserve in the Americas, home to howler and spider monkeys, king vulture and tapir.

Go further afield

Venturing further into southeast Mexico will take you to the state of Tabasco on the Gulf coast. In ancient times, the fertile lowlands traversed by mighty rivers were inhabited by two cultures, the Olmec and the Maya.

On the outskirts of the capital Villahermosa lies La Venta Park, an open-air museum displaying the massive stone heads and sculptures that are the legacy of the Olmecs. Centuries later, the Maya settled in the area and archaeological sites such as Pomoná, Reforma and Comalcalco, a unique city built with fired clay bricks are testimony to their presence.

Tropical rain forest that is a bastion for howler monkeys, macaws and the harpy eagle gives way to mist-shrouded mountains and pine forests, Chiapas is a mosaic of landscapes, a tapestry of Maya traditions. The white citadel of Palenque ruled by the all-powerful Pakal between AD 615 and 683 heads the list of Maya sites to visit, but Yaxchilan and Bonampak in the Lacandón jungle and enigimatic Toniná are also unforgettable travel adventures.

The winding road from Palenque leads up through the hills to the colonial city of San Cristóbal de las Casas. Founded in 1528 by Diego de Mazariegos and full of bustling markets and grand old churches like Santo Domingo, San Cristobal lies at the heart of the Maya highlands. In Tzotzil and Tzeltal Maya villages, people keep faith with the old ways, wearing traditional garb. Clusters of painted wooden crosses mark sacred spots and priests burn incense and make offerings in rituals that are a syncretism of Christianity and older beliefs.

In 2009, the Ciudad de la Alegria community center opened the Colegio Mano Amiga nursery and school to give children in marginalized areas of Cancun an education and the opportunity for a better life.

En 2009, el centro comunitario Ciudad de la Alegría abrió la guardería y escuela Colegio Mano Amiga para ofrecerles educación a los niños en las áreas marginadas de Cancún y la oportunidad de una mejor vida.

El Colegio Mano Amiga brinda a los niños en zonas marginadas de Cancún la oportunidad de estudiar y lograr sus sueños. Con su apoyo al programa de becas, la Fundación Royal Resorts está ayudando a 23 alumnas

The school began with between 200 and 300 pupils and currently has around 850 students, down 25 percent due to economic problems caused by the pandemic. They attend preschool, primary, secondary or high school and preparatory or senior high and are taught by a staff of around 50 teachers, following the Ministry of Education (SEP) curriculum. In 2022, 95 percent of the school’s senior high students who decided to pursue a college degree were admitted to universities in Cancun, Mexico City and elsewhere in the country.

For enrollment at Colegio Mano Amiga, the child has an academic assessment to check his/her scholastic level, psychometric testing and a socioeconomic study is carried out to see if the family is eligible for a grant. Depending on the family’s situation, the child may be eligible for a partial or full scholarship. This is where local benefactors like the Royal Resorts Foundation step in, as their donations help to fund the school’s scholarship program.

At Colegio Mano Amiga, children get to learn in a happy, safe place where they can enjoy their childhood. The 23 girls sponsored by Royal Resorts Foundation since their first year of primary school are on full scholarships and are extremely motivated. They are happy to be back at school after two years of online learning during the pandemic, which was a challenge for those without access to home computers. Although grades may have suffered somewhat, the girls are determined to catch up.

Director Paul Martinez says, “We knew we were going to have a dip in academic performance because of the pandemic and we incorporated activities such as robotics and chess to boost concentration, problem solving, math skills, teamwork and strategic thinking. In senior high we added a class on Entrepreneurship. These are helping and we are seeing test scores rising again.”

Academic evaluation is constant with homework, regular exams, presentations and competitions. There is an emphasis on ethics, discipline, spiritual and environmental

Cursan niveles de pre-escolar, primaria, secundaria y bachillerato y son formados por una plantilla de alrededor de 50 maestros, siguiendo los protocolos de la Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP). En 2022, el 95 por ciento de los estudiantes de la preparatoria de la escuela que decidieron cursar una carrera universitaria ingresaron a universidades de Cancún, la ciudad de México y otras partes del país.

Para la inscripción en el Colegio Mano Amiga, al niño se le hace una evaluación académica para comprobar su nivel escolar, un exámen psicométrico y se realiza un estudio socio-económico para ver si la familia califica para una beca. Dependiendo de la situación familiar, el niño puede recibir una beca parcial o total. Aquí es donde intervienen los benefactores locales como la Fundación Royal Resorts, ya que sus donativos ayudan a financiar el programa de becas escolares.

En el Colegio Mano Amiga, los niños aprenden en un lugar alegre y seguro donde pueden disfrutar de su niñez. Las 23 niñas patrocinadas por la Fundación Royal Resorts desde su primer año de la escuela primaria cuentan con una beca completa y están

extremadamente motivadas. El grupo incluye estudiantes sobresalientes y muchas de ellas han ganado reconocimientos académicos en el pasado. Doctores, veterinarios, enfermeras, arquitectos y otros profesionistas ofrecen pláticas en la escuela y hay visitas de familiarización a las universidades locales para que puedan aprender más sobre las carreras que les interesan. education. There are also career planning sessions to help students prepare for the future. Doctors, nurses, architects and other professionals give talks at the school and there are visits to local universities so that they can learn more about the careers they are interested in. Martinez says, “Our students are good at heart, they have potential, are eager to learn and grateful for the opportunity. We know that some of them have a difficult family background and here we give them a solid grounding in values so that they can protect themselves against risks they may be exposed to in the community. Our next step is to add more classes after school such as art, music and dance so that they spend more time in school.”

With four years of studies under her belt at Colegio Mano Amiga, Cielo enjoys math, Spanish and biology and is interested in being a nutritionist. She says, “I like the spirit of friendship in the school and that we are given values and the chance to be closer to God. I know that tomorrow I’ll be able to reach new goals, go to college and get a degree. Thank you to everyone who supported me.”

Mariane has been studying at Colegio Mano Amiga for seven years and says, “It is the best school! It is a great opportunity for me to study here and work towards my dream of being a doctor. The Royal Resorts Foundation is helping so many children and giving them the chance of a better education.”

Another student called Helen sums up what the help means to her and her classmates, “Thank you to all our sponsors for your support and for caring, you are helping children to pursue their dreams, to become doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs and more. I want to be a lawyer and not any lawyer, I want to be one of the best lawyers in the world. I’ll defend those who cannot defend themselves and I promise I won’t let you down. I say this for my fellow students, we all want to make you proud of us.”

SPECTACULAR NATURAL surroundings, high-end services and courses designed by indisputable legends have turned Cancun and the Riviera Maya into world-class golf destinations. The warm tropical weather and year-round availability allow players of all levels and ages to enjoy their tee times to the fullest. Let’s take a look at three excellent options.

Greg Norman was inspired by the extraordinary combination of jungle, mangroves, Caribbean coastline, freshwater canals and cenotes (natural sinkholes) to design El Camaleón in Mayakoba. In 2007, it hosted the first PGA tournament outside the USA and Canada, and it is also home to the only Jim Mclean Golf School in Mexico.

Diego Bazin, head of the school, claims that the 7th is the toughest hole. The 554yard par-5 has a cenote in the middle of the fairway, and has hazards on both sides. The par-4, 428-yard 2nd hole, however, has a long and narrow fairway that plays into the wind, and is guarded by a large bunker. If you miss the grass, the ball will surely end up in the mangroves. He believes that the signature 5th is equally beautiful and challenging. The par-3, 155-yard hole runs along the beach, and the strong breeze comes into play. Its green sits on a dune, and is guarded by one bunker. Bazin’s advice is to just come over and enjoy a round.

Gran Coyote in Corasol was masterfully designed by Nick Price, and what truly stands out about the course is its unparalleled upkeep and unique sense of privacy. Each hole is set apart from the others by the lush jungle, making your rounds void of any distractions.

Golf Director Francisco Salazar mentioned that the most difficult hole is the 1650yard 7th, which plays strongly against the wind, and has a lot of water and sand traps as you approach the green. At the par-4 9th, the drives are usually affected by the crosswinds. A good approach, however, might allow you to land on the green in two shots. The deeply undulating 15th hole is hard to read, and you must bring your A-game while putting to get on the green. Salazar recommends that you focus on your short game, and work on your precision to master the course.

Strategically located between Cancún’s Hotel Zone and downtown area, the Puerto Cancún golf course was designed by Tom Weiskopf. Beachfront, canals and mangroves coexist with a high-end residential community, marina and commercial area. One of the things that makes the club unique is Shots, where anyone—from first timers to pros— can enjoy snacks, drinks and a fun-filled, virtual golf experience paired with a sweeping view of the driving range.

Golf club Director Gerardo Peniche mentioned that the prevailing winds make most of the course quite unforgiving, but since each hole has 5 different tee boxes, every player can decide from which to play. He believes that the most challenging holes are the 5th and 13th. Both are par 3, overlook nearby Isla Mujeres, and play directly against the warm, and sometimes strong, Caribbean breeze. The final hole sits on one of the islets that were created on the canals. Peniche recommends that you curb your expectations because some holes are much trickier than they look. Always remember that golf can be very humbling, and that your personal score will always be your finest competitor.

On arrival at the spa, I completed the luxury hydrotherapy circuit - sauna, steam, jacuzzi, power shower - which is vital in cleansing and preparing your skin before a facial. I reclined on a bed, with soft lighting and music and my therapist Carmen took over. ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETINGS, OCTOBER 23 - 27, 2022

Advisory Council members for The Royal Islander, The Royal Sands and The Royal Haciendas attended a general meeting on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at The Royal Sands.

The meeting began with a presentation by Dr. Kemil Rizk on global travel and economic trends, the Mexican economy and the recovery of the country’s tourism industry.

Dr. Rizk noted that in 2021, the global economy began to bounce back after the COVID-19 pandemic with GDP growth rates of 6 percent in the United States and 6.2 percent in Mexico. Although growth continued in 2022, the pace slowed due to the war in Ukraine, and higher energy and food prices, causing global inflation which impacted the general economic and political climate.

There are signs of a strong recovery in international tourism with global passenger traffic on the rise, but a return to 2019 levels of growth is being delayed by the challenging economic and political environment; high inflation, a spike in oil prices, rising energy and food prices, war and the prospects of a global recession are all playing a role. A UNWTO Panel of Experts survey in September 2022 revealed that 67 percent of respondents believed tourism will return to pre-pandemic levels by 2024 and 21 percent thought it would be 2025 or later.

Dr. Rizk said that high energy and food price rises have taken a toll on the Mexican economy. GDP is growing at a slower pace, 2.14 percent in 2022, and is expected to slow even more in 2023. The exchange rate has been stable in 2022 and the high inflation rate has had an impact on resort operating budgets.

The Mexican government is still pursuing its policies for the revitalization and capitalization of Pemex (the national oil company) and the CFE or Federal Electricity Commission and is discouraging private sector participation in the production of clean, renewable energy.

The Mexican tourism industry has been much quicker to recover than other destinations around the world and has surpassed prepandemic levels of air passenger arrivals by 9.3 percent. In 2021, tourism accounted for 13.1 percent of Mexico’s GDP (14.9 percent in 2019), 6.03 million jobs (7.03 million in 2019) and visitor expenditure increased by 58.6 percent for international visitors and 20.7 percent for domestic tourists.

Cancun has outperformed Mexico in 2022, registering growth of +15 percent in the number of passenger arrivals from January to September when compared to the same period in 2019. Travelers from the United States accounted for 64.9 percent of all tourists in Mexico in 2022, 37.5 percent up on 2021.This is due to the lack of travel restrictions to enter Mexico and geographical proximity, the easing of US travel restrictions, the widespread availability of COVID-19 vaccines and the perception that it is safer to travel. However, there are concerns about the state of the US economy and the unstable political climate. Mexican domestic travel has also contributed to the recovery and growth in Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

After talking about US timeshare industry sales in 2022, Dr. Rizk talked about Royal Resorts. He explained that rentals have recovered and now exceed 2019 levels in terms

Budget Assumptions

An average exchange rate of $20.21/US$1 was considered for the preparation of the 2022 budget; however, it is expected to end the year at $20.34/ US$1. This represents a slight positive variation of 0.62 percent.

Based on the projections of leading Mexican financial institutions, an average exchange rate of $20.94 pesos to US$1 was used for the 2023 budget. For budgeting purposes, an inflation rate of five percent has been considered. The increase in the cost of living in Mexico as it affects Royal Resorts employees is taken at seven percent and mandatory wage increases for union employees are also considered.

Water and Sewage

Budgets for 2023 are based on anticipated metered water and sewage charges. The cost of water is offset by the efficiency of the reverse osmosis plants that produce 80 percent of the water used by the resorts.

Electricity

The power purchase agreement with Infra, a green energy broker is now in effect. However, due to rising natural gas prices used for the generation of electricity, energy savings for the resorts have not been at the level forecast and this is reflected in the 2023 budget.

The Royal Resorts Signature Club has 11,529 memberships in 2022 and registered a 14 percent increase in the last five years. Signature Elite memberships grew 30 percent in 2022. On average members and guests earn US$1.53 million per year in Royal Resorts Rewards and they redeem US$1.23 million in rewards.

Armando Millet then concluded the meeting with a Resort Operations presentation, commenting that occupancy levels at Royal Resorts have surpassed those recorded for Cancun and the Riviera Maya. He explained that due to a combination of high occupancy and staff shortages, customer satisfaction suffered in 2022 but is still above 90 percent. He said that US$1.7 million was spent in 2021 and 2022 at the resorts on COVID-19 testing and that the percentage of guests testing positive was only 1.15 percent.

The upgraded wi-fi is faster, supports more devices per villa for streaming and coverage is better in guest areas. He also touched upon the Recycling program and turtle conservation during 2022. The Royal Resorts Foundation has raised more than US$1 million in the last 11 years with 47 percent going to the Employee Relief Fund, 11 percent to conservation, 15 percent to health, 15 percent to social and community causes and 12 percent to education.

The Royal Cancun still does not have an Advisory Council, but the financial statement for the resort is included in this section for the benefit of members. When the resort is 80 percent sold the Council will be established.

Supuestos Presupuestarios

The annual meeting of the Advisory Council for The Royal Islander was held on October 25, alternate Patricia Havard stood in for Laura Elena Guevara who was unable to attend.

Prior to the meeting, Council members toured the resort and pointed out some maintenance issues. They also visited the villa and saw the rugs that have been replaced in 100 units and took the opportunity to thank the Housekeeping and Maintenance departmental heads for all their hard work and leadership for more than 20 years.

Council members then met with Chief Operating Officer Javier Vales, Chief Financial Officer Fernando López, Vice President of Resort Operations Armando Millet and members of their staff. CFO López went over the final numbers for 2021 before turning to the financial statement for 2022. The Income Statement Comparison accompanying this summary shows budgeted and actual (forecast) income and expenses as of September 30, 2022, with estimates to the end of the year. The budget for 2023 up until the resort closes is also shown.

The performance of the exchange rate in 2022 discussed in the General Introduction meant that the resort had a slight positive currency exchange variation of 0.62 percent or US$50,909.

CFO López reviewed the accompanying 2022 budget comparison, mentioning that the inflationary pressures discussed in the General Introduction have had an impact on resort finances. He also explained that there is a labor shortage in the area in the wake of the pandemic. This is due to several factors: huge resorts have opened recently in Costa Mujeres and the Riviera Maya and have been recruiting personnel; the Maya Train regional project has siphoned off construction, transport and catering workers as it allows them to work nearer home; some people simply decided to make career changes or returned to their hometown.

He noted that the Dues Income and the Other line item were 1.7 percent and 15.9 percent less than budgeted. Resort Operating Expenses were

basically on budget with some variations. Electricity was 21.3 percent over budget, greater savings were expected in this line item, which was affected by natural gas price rises. Social Activities is 27. 6 percent less than budgeted due to staff vacancies and an assignment adjustment. Additionally, the marina was closed and needs repairs which have not been carried out yet due to permit delays and a job position which has not been filled. Resort Insurance is 34.1 percent over budget. The Operational Services line item is 19.9 percent less than budgeted as some expenses were allocated to the Food and Beverages department, which has a separate budget.

General & Administrative Expenses includes a 33.7 percent increase in the Auditing line item for 2022 because of staff being transferred between companies. The Credit Card commission line item is 32.1 percent over budget due to a rate increase. However, the resort earned more interest, 316.2 percent more than budgeted.

Before turning to the 2023 budget, CFO López recommended a 7 percent increase in the Club Service Fee to offset the impact of inflation. This rise is only for members with occupancy in 2023.

CFO López explained that the budget is for the first six months of the year so all the line items in Resort Operating Expenses are less than the 2022 forecast. However, full staffing is considered until July 31 and Security and maintenance staff will be kept on until August 31. The budget for next year does cover a full complement of staff in Housekeeping Services and a 7 percent cost of living adjustment in salaries. The machine house will be operating until the end of August, and this is reflected in the line item. Full staffing is considered in the Maintenance and Security line items. The Social Activity line item includes the weekly Farewell Party, which will be offered until week 27. The Courtesy Shuttle and Security line items are shared costs, as Royal Uno pays a portion.

In General and Administrative costs, Auditing and Membership Services were budgeted for the year as they are still needed even if the resort is closed.

The Severance Costs line item includes administrative expenses associated with the termination of the resort for the period July 15 to October 31, 2023.

Also included in the financial statement for 2023 is the Severance Payment for staff, which comes from the club cash reserves and the Provision for Uncollectible Accounts. Staff will receive 90 days plus 20 days per year of service. Some staff would like to transfer to other Royal Resorts properties if there are vacancies. In this case, after six months they would be hired as new employees without seniority.

CFO López commented that Management tries to keep Club Service Fee increases to a minimum, but that The Royal Islander does not have the necessary club cash reserves to absorb a percentage of the increase. To do so would entail the risk of the

resort running out of club cash reserves.

The number of members who are delinquent in their Club Service Fee or membership payments has risen at The Royal Islander in recent years. The Resort must make a provision for this cash shortfall when budgeting. The Provision for Uncollectible Accounts is budgeted at US$1,169,331 for 2023. Members who are in arrears will not be eligible to receive residual rights at the end of the membership period.

As shown on the accompanying statement, The Royal Islander receives income from sources other than Club Service Fees. Interest earned on bank accounts, a fee for certain ISCO transactions, guest laundry services, late checkout fees, kitchen cleaning fees and other charges are credited to income accounts.

The Royal Islander has an anticipated Club Cash Reserve of US$4,076,752 and a Hurricane Cash Reserve of US$$1,881,914 by the end of 2022. As of September 30, 2022, the resort’s total net worth was US$4,157,814.

After reviewing the budget and discussing the proposed 7 percent increase in the 2023 Club Service Fee with CFO López and his team, the Advisory Council recommended that it be left at 5 percent and voted unanimously to approve it. In doing so, they assumed the risk that in the event of an emergency in which the club cash reserves to cover operating expenses are exhausted, the shortfall will be deducted from the proceeds of the resort sale.

Regarding the timeline for the resort sale and the termination of the membership period, members will receive emails on the process in the months to come.

In closing, the Advisory Council thanked management for its care of The Royal Islander.

The Royal Sands Advisory Council annual meeting was held on October 24, 2022, with all members present.

Prior to the meeting, Council members toured the resort to see projects completed in 2022 such as the aluminum railings in walkways and beachfront villas, the new guest elevator in Building C, the service elevator in Building I and a pump for the reverse osmosis system. They also heard about villa improvements. There will be four-slice toasters and new coffee makers in the kitchens and microwave ovens, dishwashers and fridges are being replaced in stages. In the living room the sound system will be changed for a sound bar and in the bedrooms the replacement of bedspreads, decorative cushions, runners and rugs will begin.

Council saw the proposed site for the water park in the garden behind Building C. This will be a larger project than originally planned for families to enjoy and will have a snack bar, restrooms, a lifeguard, ramps, two splash buckets and slides. The splash pool will be heated in the winter and the project will start in 2023.

The aluminum window and door frames in the motor lobby and pool entrance will be replaced by floor to ceiling glass and hurricane screens will be installed when needed in 2023. The lobby renovation will now be a soft remodeling with new upholstery, lighting, artwork and fresh wall paint. After a study, Management decided that the full lobby remodeling project, which included replacing the floor, was going to be too disruptive and the proposal was cancelled.

After the tour, Council members met with Chief Operating Officer Javier Vales, Chief Financial Officer Fernando López, Vice President of Resort Operations Armando Millet and members of their staff. CFO López went over the final figures for 2021 and explained the 2022 financial statements. The Income Statement Comparison accompanying this summary shows budgeted and actual (forecast) income and expenses as of September 30, 2022, with estimates to the end of the year. The 2023 budget is also shown.

CFO López reviewed the accompanying 2022 budget comparison, mentioning that the inflationary pressures discussed in the General Introduction have had an impact on resort finances. The cost of filling job vacancies in key departments such as Housekeeping and a 7 percent cost of living adjustment in salaries have been factored into the 2023 budget.

In 2022, total Resort Operating Expenses are 5.8 percent less than budgeted, this is because the water park and lobby renovation projects have not been executed yet and this is reflected in the Fixed Assets and Major Repairs line item. These two major items have been carried over to the 2023 budget. Electricity is 10.5 percent over budget, greater savings were expected in this line item, which was affected by natural gas price rises. The 74.8 percent increase in Water & Sewage covers a replacement pump for the reverse osmosis plant, new membranes and the purchase of water from the city for three months before the pump arrived. The increase in Resort Insurance covers glass and aluminum price increases and a 10 percent increase in the Hurricane Fund in 2022 and 2023. General and Administrative Expenses were down in 2022 as the COVID testing program was cancelled after four months Before turning to the 2023 budget, CFO López briefed Council on the proposal to raise the Club Service Fee by four percent to offset the impact of inflation.

Resort Operating Expenses are budgeted to increase by 15.30 percent in 2023. Housekeeping Services is 11.8 percent more, for the 7 percent salary increase and filling all staff vacancies. The 34.2 percent increase in Housekeeping Maintenance includes equipment replacement and repairs. The 108.1 percent increase in

Fixed Assets and Major Repairs covers the bigger water park project and the lobby renovation. The Gym line item will be 27.3 percent higher than 2022 to cover the purchase of new treadmills.

Operating Income is forecast to be 18.7 percent less in 2023 and in Financial Expenses the rate increases in credit card commissions will continue to impact the budget. The Hurricane Fund will increase to US$3,306,089 in 2023 and the FF&E Cash Reserve is also being built up for a future villa remodeling project.

The Resort Revenue line item includes resort income received from sources other than Club Service Fees. These include interest earned on bank accounts, a fee for certain ISCO transactions, guest laundry services, late check out fees, kitchen cleaning fees and other charges.

Other Income also includes the savings from Resort Fees that Resort Operations receives from the REFINE All-Inclusive program, US$2.50 per All-Inclusive guest per day to cover extra expenses generated by the program. Member Club Service Fees do not subsidize the REFINE All-Inclusive program in any way.

The Royal Sands has an anticipated Club Cash reserve of US$7,399,200 and a Hurricane Cash Reserve of US$3,085,689 by the end of 2022. As of September 30, 2022, the resort’s total net worth was US$8,102,522.

The number of members who are delinquent in their Club Service Fee and membership payments currently stands at around 6 percent of the membership. The resort must make a provision to cover the cash shortfall from unpaid annual dues when budgeting. Members who are in arrears are urged to fulfill their financial obligations.

After reviewing the budget and listening to Management’s recommendation for a four percent increase in the Club Service Fee for 2022, Council voted unanimously to accept the motion and thanked Management for its care of The Royal Sands.

ADVISORY COUNCIL October 26, 2022

The annual meeting of the Advisory Council for The Royal Haciendas was held at the resort on October 26, 2022. One member attended by video conferencing.

Prior to the meeting, Council members toured the resort with Manager Sandra Aguilar, who briefed them on projects completed in 2022, purchases such as the pool lift, and the progress of sun deck repaving, including a new seating area in the Phase 1 gardens.

During the villa inspection, Council saw some of the design features proposed for the Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment (FF&E) villa renovation project, which will retain the Mexican hacienda concept. They include the addition of more ceiling lights, furniture will be reupholstered, quartz tops for the coffee tables and new artwork, rugs, curtains and white bed linens.

Council members saw items replaced in the Machine House and Sandra Aguilar explained that the resort laundry will be enlarged to house an ironing machine for the upgraded bed linens.

After the tour, Council members met with Chief Operating Officer Javier Vales, Chief Financial Officer Fernando López, Vice President of Resort Operations Armando Millet and members of their staff, and delivered a document stating the achievements, recognition and pending items to be addressed by Resort Operations Management and the Council in future meetings. CFO López went over the final figures for 2021 and explained the 2022 financial statement. The Income Statement Comparison accompanying this summary shows budgeted and actual (forecast) income and expenses as of September 30, 2022, with estimates to the end of the year. The 2023 budget is also shown.

The performance of the exchange rate in 2022 discussed in the General Introduction meant that the resort had a slight positive currency exchange variation of 0.62 percent or US$74,374.

In his review of the accompanying 2022 budget comparison, CFO López referred to the inflationary pressures that have impacted resort finances. He also commented upon the labor shortage in the hospitality industry in the wake of the pandemic. This is due to huge new resorts that have been recruiting personnel; the Maya Train project has siphoned off workers, and some people decided to make career changes or returned to their hometown. The Royal Haciendas is one of the resorts hit hardest by staff shortages and the search goes on to fill vacancies.

In 2022, Total Resort Revenue was 0.9 percent over budget. There were more savings in the Refine Income line item, this is because the turndown service was not done during the year due to staff shortages.

CFO López went through the Resort Operating Expenses noting that Fixed Assets and Major Repairs was 23.7 percent over budget due to the installation of the sargasso barrier and the replacement of a chiller. He explained that a natural gas price rise and higher occupancy impacted the Electricity line item meaning lower savings. The 2.8 percent increase in Housekeeping Maintenance covers the replacement of appliances (higher in 2022) and repairs. Maintenance & Machine House shows an 11.3 percent increase and is due to higher LP gas prices and consumption. The resort uses LP gas to heat water in the villas, the pools and the whirlpools on the villa terraces and the pool decks.

In General and Administrative Expenses, the Other Expenses line item is 83.2 percent over budget in 2022, attributable to an increase in the subdivision fees paid to CORASOL. Credit Card Commission CSF was also 35.2 percent over budget as credit card companies have increased their rates. The Provision for Uncollectible Accounts was much less in 2022, leaving the resort with a better Net Income after Provision.

CFO López noted that US$600,000 was added to the FF&E Provision and that Council will be shown the final design concept and budget for the Villa Remodeling project before it begins in 2023. He stressed the need to build up the Club Cash Reserves and Hurricane Cash Reserve, for a resort the size of The Royal Haciendas, they should be around US2.5 million each.

Before turning to the 2023 budget, CFO López presented the proposal to raise the Club Service Fee by seven percent to absorb the impact of inflation and cover additional expenses factored into the budget such as staff recruitment and the cost of living salary adjustment.

Resort Operating Expenses are budgeted at 1.4 percent over 2022 levels with increases in Sports Services and Social Activities, Operational Services, Housekeeping and Maintenance & Machine House.

As shown in Resort Revenue, The Royal Haciendas receives income from sources other than Club Service Fees. Interest earned on bank accounts, a fee for certain ISCO transactions, guest laundry services, late checkout fees, kitchen cleaning fees and other charges are credited to income accounts.

In Resort Revenue, Other Income includes savings from the Resort Fees that Resort Operations receives from the REFINE All-Inclusive program, per All-Inclusive guest per day to cover extra expenses generated by the program. Member Club Service Fees do not subsidize the REFINE All-Inclusive program.

The Royal Haciendas has an anticipated Club Cash Reserve of US$777,159 for 2022. The Hurricane Reserve stands at US$2,325,348. As of September 30, 2022, the resort’s total net worth was US$3,389,345.

A percentage of members are delinquent in their Club Service Fee and membership payments and the Resort must make a provision for this cash shortfall when budgeting. Members who are in arrears are urged to fulfill their financial obligations.

After analysis, discussion and looking to strengthen the Club and FF&E cash reserves, the Advisory Council requested and unanimously approved an eight percent increase in the 2023 Club Service Fee, adding US$600,000 to the FF&E reserve and moving US$180,000 to the Club Cash Reserve. Resort Operations Management will continue to work and finalize the Villa Remodeling Project and it will be submitted for approval later in 2023.

The Club Service Fee for 2023 will be US$1,358.00 for the Flexivilla and US$1,446.00 for the Deluxe Villa and the breakdown is as follows:

La reunión anual del Consejo Consultivo de The Royal Islander se llevó a cabo el 25 de octubre de 2022, la suplente Patricia Havard reemplazó a Laura Elena Guevara quien no pudo asistir.

Antes de la reunión, los miembros del Consejo recorrieron el resort y señalaron algunos aspectos de mantenimiento. El Lic. López, en su revisión del comparativo del presupuesto 2022 adjunto, mencionó que las presiones inflacionarias mencionadas en la Introducción General impactaron las finanzas del resort. También explicó que existe una escasez de mano de obra en la zona después de la pandemia. Esto se debe a varios factores: grandes resorts que han abierto en la zona están contratando personal; el Tren Maya; algunas personas simplemente decidieron hacer cambios de carrera o regresar a sus pueblos de origen.

Señaló que los renglones de Ingresos y Otros Ingresos fueron 1.7 y 15.9 por ciento menos que lo presupuestado. Los Gastos Operativos del Resort estuvieron básicamente de acuerdo al presupuesto con algunas variaciones. Electricidad fue 21.3 por ciento arriba del presupuesto, se esperaban mayores ahorros

Actividades Sociales es 27.6 por ciento menos que lo presupuestado debido a las vacantes de personal y un ajuste de asignación. Además, la marina estuvo cerrada y requiere reparaciones que no se han realizado debido a retrasos en los permisos y a una vacante que aún no ha sido cubierta. El Seguro del Resort es 34.1 por ciento arriba del presupuesto. El renglón de Servicios Operativos es 19.9 por ciento inferior a lo presupuestado ya que algunos gastos se asignaron al departamento de Alimentos y Bebidas. Los Gastos Generales y Administrativos incluyen un incremento del 33.7 por ciento en el renglón de Auditoría para 2022 debido a la transferencia de personal entre compañías. El concepto de Comisión de Tarjeta de Crédito es 32.1 por ciento arriba del presupuesto debido a un aumento en las tarifas. Sin embargo, el resort generó más Intereses, 316.2 por ciento más de lo presupuestado.

Antes de pasar al presupuesto de 2023, el Lic. López recomendó un aumento de 7 por ciento en la Cuota Anual de Servicio para compensar el impacto de la inflación. Este incremento es sólo para socios con ocupación en 2023.

El Lic. López explicó que el presupuesto es para los primeros seis meses del año, por lo que todos los conceptos de Gastos Operativos del Resort son menores que lo pronosticado en 2022. Sin embargo, se considera el personal completo hasta el 31 de julio y el personal de Seguridad y mantenimiento se mantendrá hasta el 31 de agosto. El presupuesto para el próximo año cubre una dotación completa de personal en Servicios de Ama de Llaves y un ajuste del 7 por ciento del costo de vida en los salarios. El cuarto de máquinas estará operando hasta finales de agosto, y esto se refleja en la partida. Actividades Sociales incluye la fiesta semanal de Despedida, que se ofrecerá hasta la semana 27. Las partidas de Autobús de Cortesía y Seguridad son costos compartidos, ya que Royal Uno paga una parte.

En Costos Generales y Administrativos, Auditoría y Servicios de Membresía se presupuestaron para todo el año ya que aún se necesitan incluso si el resort está cerrado.

El concepto de Costos de Indemnización incluye los gastos administrativos asociados con la terminación del resort para el período del 15 de julio al 31 de octubre de 2023.

También incluido en el estado financiero para 2023 está el Pago de Indemnización para el personal, que proviene de las reservas de efectivo del club y la Provisión de Cuentas Incobrables. El personal recibirá 90 días más 20 días por año de servicio. A algunos miembros del personal les gustaría transferirse a otras propiedades de Royal Resorts si hubiera vacantes. En este caso, después de seis meses serían contratados como empleados nuevos sin antigüedad.

El Lic. López comentó que la Gerencia trata de mantener los aumentos en la Cuota Anual de Servicio al mínimo, pero que The Royal Islander no cuenta con las reservas de efectivo del club necesarias para absorber un porcentaje del incremento. Hacerlo implicaría el riesgo de que el resort se quedara sin reservas de efectivo del club.

El número de socios que están en mora en sus pagos de la Cuota Anual de Servicio ha aumentado en años

recientes en The Royal Islander. El resort debe hacer una provisión para este déficit al elaborar el presupuesto. La Provisión para Cuentas Incobrables es $1,169,331 USD para 2023. Los socios que se encuentren en mora no serán elegibles para recibir derechos residuales al final del período de la membresía.

Como se muestra en el estado financiero adjunto, The Royal Islander recibe ingresos por otras fuentes aparte de las Cuotas Anuales de Servicio. The Royal Islander cuenta con una Reserva de Efectivo del Club de $4,076,752 USD y una Reserva de Efectivo para Huracanes de $1,881,914 USD anticipada para finales de 2022. Al 30 de septiembre de 2022, el valor neto del resort fue de $4,157,814 USD.

Después de revisar el presupuesto y discutir la propuesta del 7 por ciento de aumento en la Cuota Anual de Servicio para 2023 con el Lic. La reunión anual del Consejo Consultivo de The Royal Sands se llevó a cabo el 24 de octubre de 2022, con todos los miembros presentes.

Antes de la reunión, los miembros del Consejo recorrieron el resort para ver los proyectos completados en 2022. También se les presentaron las mejoras en las villas, nuevas cafeteras y tostadores en la cocina, habrá una barra de sonido en la sala y en las recámaras comenzará el cambio de cubrecamas, cojines decorativos, caminos y tapetes.

El Consejo vio el lugar propuesto para el parque acuático en el jardín atrás del Edificio C. Este será más grande de lo planeado y el proyecto iniciará en 2023.

Los marcos de ventanas y puertas de aluminio en el motor lobby y acceso a la alberca se cambiarán por vidrio de piso a techo y se instalarán cortinas contra huracanes cuando se requieran en 2023. La renovación del lobby ahora será una remodelación suave con nuevo tapizado, iluminación, arte y pintura. Después de estudiarlo, la Gerencia decidió que el proyecto de remodelación total del lobby causaría demasiada incomodidad y la propuesta fue cancelada.

Después del recorrido, los miembros del Consejo se reunieron con Javier Vales, Director General de Operaciones, Fernando López, Director de Finanzas, Armando Millet, Vicepresidente de Operaciones de los Resorts, así como con personal de sus departamentos.

El Lic. López repasó los números de cierre para el año 2021 y explicó los estados financieros de 2022. La declaración comparativa de ingresos que acompaña este resumen muestra el ingreso y egreso presupuestado en comparación con lo real al 30 de septiembre de 2022, utilizando montos estimados para finalizar el año. También se muestra el presupuesto de 2023. El comportamiento de la tasa de cambio en 2022 que se analizó en la Introducción General significa que el resort tuvo una ligera ganancia cambiaria del 0.62 por ciento ó $113,714 USD.

Las reparaciones y renovaciones autorizadas por el Consejo en 2021 y completados en 2022 incluyen:

El Lic. López presentó el comparativo de presupuesto 2022 adjunto, explicando que la presión inflacionaria mencionada en la Introducción General tuvo un impacto en las finanzas del resort. Señaló que hay un déficit de personal en el resort y el costo para cubrir las vacantes en departamentos claves como Ama de Llaves y un ajuste salarial del 7 por ciento se consideraron en el presupuesto de 2023.

En 2022, el total de Gastos Operativos del Resort es 5.8 por ciento menos que lo presupuestado, esto se debe a que los proyectos del parque acuático y de renovación del lobby aún no se han ejecutado y esto se refleja en el renglón de Activos Fijos y Reparaciones Mayores. Electricidad es 10.5 por ciento arriba del presupuesto, se esperaban mayores ahorros en este concepto, que fue afectado por el aumento en el precio del gas natural. El incremento de 74.8 por ciento en Agua y Alcantarillado cubre el cambio de una bomba en la planta de ósmosis inversa, membranas nuevas y la compra de agua por tres meses antes de que llegara la bomba. El aumento en el Seguro del Resort cubre el incremento en el precio de vidrio y aluminio y un aumento del 10 por ciento en el Fondo para Huracán en 2022 y 2023. Los gastos Generales y Administrativos estuvieron abajo en 2022, ya que el programa de pruebas COVID se canceló después de cuatro meses.

Antes de pasar al presupuesto 2023, el Lic. López expuso al Consejo la propuesta de aumentar la Cuota Anual de Servicio en cuatro por ciento para compensar el impacto de la inflación.

Se prevé que los Gastos Operativos del Resort aumenten un 15.30 por ciento en 2023. El Servicio de Ama de Llaves es 11.8 por ciento más, por el ajuste en salarios y la contratación de personal. El aumento

del 34.2 por ciento en el Mantenimiento Ama de Llaves incluye la sustitución y reparaciones de equipo. El incremento del 108.1 por ciento en Activos Fijos y Reparaciones Mayores cubre el proyecto del parque acuático y la renovación de lobby. La partida del gimnasio será 27.3 por ciento mayor en 2022 para adquirir nuevas caminadoras.

El Ingreso de Operación se estima ser 18.7 por ciento menos en 2023 y en los Gastos Financieros el aumento en la tarifas de las comisiones de tarjetas de crédito continuarán afectando el presupuesto.

En Ingresos del Resort se incluyen los ingresos recibidos de fuentes distintas a las Cuotas Anuales de Servicio, como el Interés generado en las cuentas de banco, una cuota por ciertas transacciones que realiza ISCO, lavandería, cuotas de salida tardía, cuotas de limpieza de cocina y otras cuotas se acreditan a las cuentas de ingresos.

The Royal Sands cuenta con una Reserva de Efectivo anticipada de $7,399,200 USD y una Reserva de Efectivo para Huracanes de 3,085,689 USD para finales de 2022. Al 30 de septiembre de 2022, el valor neto del resort era de $8,102,522 USD.

La cantidad de socios que están en mora con sus pagos de la Cuota Anual de Servicio o de la membresía actualmente se sitúa alrededor del 6 por ciento de la membresía. El Resort tiene que hacer una provisión por este déficit de efectivo al elaborar el presupuesto. Se solicita a los socios que están en mora que cumplan con sus obligaciones financieras.

Después de analizar el presupuesto y escuchar la recomendación de la Gerencia para un aumento del cuatro por ciento en la Cuota Anual de Servicio para 2023, el Consejo votó unánimemente a favor y agradeció a la Gerencia por mantener The Royal Sands en óptimas condiciones.

REPORTE DE LA REUNIÓN ANUAL DEL CONSEJO CONSULTIVO DE THE ROYAL HACIENDAS

La reunión anual del Consejo Consultivo de The Royal Haciendas se llevó a cabo en el resort el 26 de octubre de 2022. Uno de los miembros la atendió por videoconferencia.

Antes de la junta, los miembros del Consejo recorrieron el resort con la gerente Sandra Aguilar y vieron los proyectos terminados en 2022 y el avance en el cambio de piso en el asoleadero.

En la inspección de la villa, el Consejo conoció algunos de los detalles propuestos para el proyecto de Mobiliario, Accesorios y Equipos (FF&E), el cual mantendrá el concepto de hacienda mexicana. Incluyen la adición de más luces, tapicería de los muebles, las mesas de centro tendrán una cubierta de cuarzo y habrá nuevos cuadros, tapetes, cortinas y blancos.

El Lic. López, al explicar la comparación del presupuesto 2022 adjunto, se refirió a las presiones inflacionarias que han impactado las finanzas del resort. También comentó sobre la escasez de mano de obra en la industria hotelera. The Royal Haciendas es uno de los resorts que ha sido más afectado y continúa la búsqueda para llenar las vacantes.

En 2022, los Ingresos Totales del Resort estuvieron un 0.9 por ciento arriba del presupuesto. Hubo más ahorros en el concepto de Ingresos por Refine, esto se debe a que el servicio de cortesía no se realizó durante el año debido a la falta de personal.

El Lic. López revisó los Gastos Operativos del Resort señalando que los Activos Fijos y Reparaciones Mayores fue 23.7 por ciento arriba del presupuesto debido a la instalación de la barrera contra el sargazo y el reemplazo de un enfriador. Explicó que un aumento de precio del gas natural y una mayor ocupación impactaron la partida de Electricidad, lo que significó un menor ahorro. El aumento del 2.8 por ciento en Mantenimiento de Ama de Llaves cubre el reemplazo de aparatos electrodomésticos (mayor en 2022) y reparaciones. Mantenimiento y Cuarto de Máquinas muestra un incremento de 11.3 por ciento debido a precios más altos del gas LP y un mayor consumo.

En Gastos Generales y Administrativos, el renglón de Otros Gastos es 83.2 por ciento arriba del presupuesto en 2022, atribuible a un aumento en las cuotas que el resort paga a CORASOL. La Comisión de Tarjeta de Crédito CSF también estuvo un 35.2 por ciento sobre el presupuesto debido al aumento en las tarifas de las compañías de tarjetas de crédito.

El Lic. López señaló que se agregaron $600,000 USD a la Provisión FF&E.

Antes de pasar al presupuesto para 2023, el Lic. López presentó la propuesta de aumentar la Cuota Anual de Servicio en un siete por ciento para absorber el impacto de la inflación y cubrir los gastos adicionales incluidos en el presupuesto, como la contratación de personal y el ajuste salarial por el costo de la vida.

Los Gastos Operativos del Resort fueron presupuestados un 1.4 por ciento arriba de los niveles de 2022 con incrementos en Servicios Deportivos y

Actividades Sociales, Servicios Operativos, Ama de Llaves y Mantenimiento y Cuarto de Máquinas.

Como se muestra en los Ingresos del Resort, The Royal Haciendas recibe ingresos de otras fuentes aparte de las Cuotas Anuales de Servicio. El interés generado en las cuentas de banco, una cuota por ciertas transacciones que realiza ISCO, lavandería, cuotas de salida tardía y de limpieza de cocina y otras cuotas se acreditan a las cuentas de ingresos.

En los Ingresos del Resort, Otros Ingresos incluyen los ahorros de las tarifas del resort que Operaciones del Resort recibe del programa REFINE Todo Incluido, por huésped todo incluido por día para cubrir los gastos adicionales que genera el programa. La Cuota Anual de Servicio no subsidia al programa REFINE Todo Incluido.

The Royal Haciendas tiene una Reserva en Efectivo del Club anticipada de $777,159 USD para 2022. La Reserva en Efectivo por Huracán se sitúa en $2,325,348 USD. Al 30 de septiembre de 2022, el valor neto del resort es de $3,389,345 USD.

Un porcentaje de socios presentan retrasos en sus Cuotas Anuales de Servicio y pago de la membresía y el Resort tiene que hacer una provisión por este déficit de efectivo al elaborar el presupuesto. Se les solicita a los socios que están en mora que cumplan con sus obligaciones financieras.

Después del análisis y buscar fortalecer a las Reservas de Efectivo del Club y del FF&E, el Consejo Consultivo solicitó y aprobó por unanimidad un aumento del 8 por ciento para 2023 en la Cuota Anual de Servicio, agregando $600,000 USD a la reserva FF&E y trasladando $180,000 a la Reserva de Efectivo del Club. La Gerencia continuará trabajando para completar el Proyecto de Remodelación de Villas y será sometido para aprobación en 2023.

La Cuota de Anual de Servicios para 2023 será de $1,358.00 USD para la Flexivilla y $1,446.00 USD para la Villa Deluxe y el desglose es como sigue:
