Bring the children for a day of fun in the water at the Royal Sands Aqua Park. Enjoy the slides, chutes, tunnels and splash buckets galore, and there’s a separate area for smaller children. Cool off with a smoothie and a burger or hot dog from the Snack Shack.
Royal pickleball
The latest sports sensation has come to Royal Resorts, pickleball! Ideal for all ages, this is a game that everyone in the family can enjoy. The Royal Haciendas now has four pickleball courts, there’s one at Grand Residences and you can also play at The Royal Sands.
If you prefer tennis, there are courts at all the resorts, tennis clinics with the Pro and even a weekly tournament. Ask at the Sports Desk for pickleball and tennis court reservations.

Going Green
Turning the tide on plastics
Royal Resorts is doing its bit to reduce single-use plastic bottle consumption by installing drinking water dispensers in guest areas, restaurants and bars. At Grand Residences, pitchers of chilled water are served on the pool deck and throughout the resort. Bottled water is still available on request, but if you would like to support this green initiative and help protect the planet, bring an eco-friendly water flask or thermos and fill it up any time you need. Souvenir water bottles are also available for purchase.
Royal turtles
Through long starry nights, our eco guardians watched over the sea turtles coming ashore to nest during the summer. The resort security teams at The Royal Sands protected 229 nests and released 18,799 hatchlings (as of November). In 24 years, Royal Resorts has released more than 1.2 million turtles.

The rule of language says that the art of cocktail making is to keep faith with classic recipes whereas mixology does not follow a recipe, giving the mixologist freedom to create new flavors and experiences from scratch or seek inspiration from different sources, such as a favorite meal, a memory, feeling, a person, place or even a random thought that crosses your mind.

Pastorcito
Una bebida inspirada en uno de los alimentos favoritos de México, los tacos al pastor, una receta de carne de cerdo marinada y cocinada al estilo shawarma mexicano,
y elegido como “la mejor comida del mundo” en 2019 por Taste Atlas. Los sabores característicos y un toque de frescura hacen que el cóctel de Hacienda Sisal sea el acompañante perfecto para guacamole o un plato de quesos mexicanos.
El tequila Herradura reposado es el corazón y alma de este coctel. Añejado durante 11 meses en barricas de roble americano, tienen las notas de caramelo y madera, conservando los sabores herbales del agave. Al tequila se le añade un poco de jugo de limón, jugo de piña, cilantro, una pizca de chile serrano y achiote macerado (una semilla nativa de la América tropical), y se agita. Antes de servirse se decora con un trozo de piña asado y una rama de cilantro.
Mexica
Una obra de arte toma su tiempo y el Mexica no es la excepción. Este coctel es una celebración de la cultura mexicana desde sus raíces y de los tiempos de nuestros antepasados. Tomando diversos elementos de la cultura mexica, esta es una bebida única que nadie pidió, pero que a todos les encanta.
El ingrediente central del Mexica es el mezcal espadín 400 Conejos originario de las montañas de Oaxaca, y sus notas ahumadas evocan las cenizas de una cálida fogata en una noche fría en algún pueblo de las tierras altas. Al mezcal se le añade un aromático licor de maíz Nixta con una infusión de chile jalapeño y jarabe de agave hecho en casa, y
Iconic flavors and a touch of freshness make a Hacienda Sisal cocktail that is the perfect pairing for guacamole or a platter of Mexican cheeses.
Herradura tequila reposado is the heart and soul of this cocktail. Aged 11 months in American oak barrels, it has notes of caramel and wood while retaining the herbal flavors of the agave. A dash of lime juice, pineapple juice, coriander, a pinch of serrano chili and axiote (annatto, a seed native to tropical America used in the achiote spice mix) are added, macerated and shaken. Before serving, a grilled pineapple and coriander garnish is added.
Mexica
A work of art takes time and Mexica is no exception. This cocktail is a celebration of Mexican culture from its roots in the days of our ancestors. It is a unique drink that no one asked for, but that everyone loves.
The key ingredient for Mexica is 400 Conejos Espadin mezcal from the mountains of Oaxaca and its smoky notes evoke the ashes around a warm hearth on a chilly night in a highland village. Aromatic Nixta corn liquor is added with an infusion of jalapeño chili and homemade agave syrup, topped up with lime and orange juice to balance the flavors. The rim of the glass is covered with a frosting of ash from burnt corn kernels and salt and garnished with corn shoots and a seared sweet corn skewer.
Chili, corn and mezcal may be an unusual combination but they balance each other perfectly. Ask for Mexica in Club Bistro as an accompaniment for blackened sea bass.
Bistro Martini
One of the cocktail classics, everyone knows a martini, either from glossy lifestyle magazines or as James Bond’s favorite drink. It became popular in the United States during the Prohibition years and originally contained gin and vermouth although nowadays there are myriad variations and ways of asking for it: shaken not stirred, dry, extra dry, sweet, dirty, extra dirty, on the rocks, among others.
Given its universal appeal, we decided to create a Royal Resorts martini recipe, a vibrant cocktail with good body and bold flavors. We use Las Californias, a gin distilled in Mexico full of botanicals from the deserts and sierras in the north of the country and the American Southwest. Notes of damiana, hoja santa, rosemary and oregano give it a distinctive flavor and fragrance. The result is a dry martini with a hint of sweetness, and we add crumbled blue cheese which has a tang and buttery touch, and a dried citrus garnish for more scent. Take a sip of the cocktail followed by a bite of the skewer of olives stuffed with blue cheese for maximum flavor.
Ask for this cocktail in Club Bistro and La Trattoria; it goes well with marbled steaks and pasta in white sauces.

Bistro Martini

Se hizo popular en los Estados Unidos durante la época de la Prohibición y originalmente contenía ginebra y vermut, aunque hoy en día existen miles de variantes y maneras de ordenarlo: mezclado no agitado, seco, extra seco, dulce, sucio, extra sucio y en las rocas, entre otras.
Dada su aceptación universal, decidimos crear una receta de Martini Royal Resorts, un coctel vibrante con buen cuerpo y sabores fuertes. Utilizamos Las Californias, una ginebra destilada en México llena de los sabores botánicos del desierto y las sierras del norte del país y del Suroeste Americano. Las notas de damiana, hoja santa, romero y orégano le dan un sabor y aroma distintivos. El resultado es un Martini seco con un toque de dulzor, le agregamos migajas de queso azul que tiene un toque picante y mantequilloso, y una guarnición de cítricos secos para darle más aroma. I WAS ALONE ON THE BEACH listening to the waves and waiting for the glimmer of light on the horizon that heralded the approaching dawn. The stars faded, the sky paled and suddenly there it was, a trail of shimmering gold across the sea and then the first rays of the rising sun. Everything seemed to spring to life, the cry of the seagulls, pelicans flying along the shoreline, and, at the resort behind me, a smile and “buenos días” from arriving staff. Another day in the Mexican Caribbean, with more unforgettable experiences to enjoy at Grand Residences. It was my second day at this award-winning resort, a sanctuary of luxury in a beautiful beach setting. The magic began with our suite.. Spacious and luxurious, it had thoughtful details at every turn. Handcrafted tropical hardwood furniture and a king-size bed with a pillow menu and premium linens for a perfect night’s sleep. The spa bathroom had a whirlpool tub for relaxing, a walk-in rain shower, a double vanity and Bulgari® bath amenities. We were staying in a Jr. Suite with a kitchenette, seating area and murphy bed, and an ocean-view terrace. The larger two-, three- and four-bedroom suites have a gourmet kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances including a wine chiller, an ample living and dining room, in-room entertainment center, a laundry room, and a large terrace with loungers, jacuzzi, table and chairs for alfresco dining. Everything you would need on your vacation, and more. Some even have their own gardens, plunge pools or rooftop terraces with a grill, bar, and a pool. I could see why this resort welcomes families, parents and children, grandparents looking after toddlers, reunions with relatives and friends who live far away from each other but travel here to enjoy precious moments together.
It was time to relax, and the gorgeous infinity pool is the place to start. Pool concierge Efraín greeted us and showed us to our pool loungers, bringing towels, water, facial mist, popsicles and fresh fruit. The views were breathtaking: the beach and the sparkling waters of the Caribbean and behind us the splendid resort that takes its inspiration from a grand old Mexican hacienda with arches, columns, tiled cupulas or roof domes and colorful Talavera ceramic planters with cascading bougainvillea.

salad bursting with citrus flavors were followed by fettuccini frutti di mare and a tasty Angus burger. I checked into the spa for an afternoon of pampering. An aromatherapy massage was just what I needed for tense, aching muscles. First, I basked in the warmth of a neck pillow filled with aromatic seeds and lavender flowers and then Monica, my therapist applied gentle massage movements and energizing citrus essential oils. It was truly 50 minutes of bliss, and it left me floating on a cloud.
A sudden thunderstorm scattered guests, and I sat on the terrace gazing at the mangrove forest in the gardens that is the green heart of Grand Residences. Swallows and dragonflies skimmed the trees and a lone coatimundi gathered berries in a nearby palm tree before curling up for a siesta as it sheltered from the rain. It reminded me of the spectacular setting between a nature reserve and the Mesoamerican Reef offshore. Herons, iguanas, crocodiles, kingfishers, coatis and raccoons are frequently spotted here. The resort participates in the annual statewide turtle conservation program, and has energy efficient lighting, the latest water treatment technology, and a variety of green best practices to help preserve the environment.
At 6 p.m., we met up with Grand Residences Sommelier Laura Sánchez for the Mexican wine tasting experience. In recent years, Mexican wines have won 1,500 medals for excellence in competitions in France, Belgium, Argentina and Italy and there are highly acclaimed vineyards. Eighty percent of the country’s wines are produced in Baja California, many by small growers

Laura takes you on a fascinating tour of history as she pours a chardonnay from Casa Madero in Valle de Parras, Coahuila, Mexico’s oldest vineyard, dating from 1597. She describes the country’s principal wine regions – Baja California, Coahuila, Chihuahua and San Luis Potosí in the north and Queretaro, Hidalgo and Guanajuato in central Mexico – and explains the role of soils, minerals, climate and altitude on cultivation. We sampled a rosé from Bodega Los Cedros, Coahuila, paired with a cheese platter, and Forza, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Barbera with a filet mignon that chef David prepared tableside, followed by a chocolate sphere filled with mascarpone and black cherries. This is truly an experience for the senses, a must for guests who enjoy the poetry of wine.
Laura is on hand every night to help diners choose the perfect pairing for their menu choices from the awardwinning El Faro Grill wine list. She told us about other gourmet experiences that can be arranged through the Concierge, a weekly Tequila Tasting, an Evening with the Chef during which he cooks dinner in your suite, and the Romantic Beach dinner for celebrating special occasions. The sounds of jarocho music, the guitar and harp melodies from Veracruz such as La Bamba, announced Taco Tuesday in Flor de Canela. You help yourself to tortillas and fill them with a variety of tasty traditional fillings including marinated pork cooked shawarma style, grilled beef and shrimp to chicken in mole sauce, rajas poblanas, guacamole and spicy salsas. All around I could see diners enjoying the food, the festive ambiance and the music.
Taco Tuesday is just one of the theme nights offered during the week. During French Night, diners can enjoy an a la carte menu prepared by a chef who admits that classic haute cuisine is his passion. Italian Night is a celebration of Mediterranean flavors, and you can savor the catch of the day on Seafood Night and tuck into a Sunday evening BBQ. For families, there is also a popular Beach Bonfire on Fridays. Chef Arturo Muñoz says “The French and Italian experiences are offered twice during the week, and we have a new signature menu of premium steaks in addition to a la carte dining. For guests who want to discover our World Heritage cuisine, an evening in Flor de Canela is a highlight and the duck and mole sauce trio is a showstopper.” He added, “We want owners and guests to leave the resort with fantastic dining memories of the flavors and experiences they tried. Jazz and Martini Night on Tuesdays gives guests the chance to savor a signature martini menu and mellow music. Take a tip from me, with its notes of Baileys and rich cacao the chocolate martini is the perfect afterdinner drink if you skipped dessert.

went for a stroll along the beach and weighed up whether to practice my ground strokes with the tennis pro, take one of the fitness sessions or a dance class. There are daily activities for all ages including yoga, salsa classes, and even art therapy and children will love the Kids Club. At midday, I joined the cooking class and watched chefs Francisco and Jesus prepare filet mignon in a creamy peanut sauce flavored with apple, bacon and wine. They answer questions as they cook, sharing kitchen tips, side dish and dessert suggestions for their showstopper recipes, which change from week to week. This is a wonderful way to meet fellow guests, share a foodie experience with the family, and talk to some of the team members that make Grand Residences exceptional. Looking out over clear turquoise waters, the sound of the waves, a Caribbean beat and enticing aromas led me to Heaven Beach Bar. After cocktails on the terrace as we watched the sky turn rose and golden and soft clouds scud gently across the ocean, it was time for dinner at El Faro Grill. New England clam chowder and salad were followed by beef stir fry and the catch of the day, a divine raspberry mousse and a serenade by master guitarist Jorge Durán.

THE MEXICAN CARIBBEAN is world-renowned for its beautiful beaches and archaeological treasures. Yet, there is another fascinating aspect: its biodiversity. The Yucatan Peninsula hosts up to 5,800 species, including plants, fungi, insects, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds, fish and other marine life. Some species of fish, birds and mammals are endemic, meaning that they are found nowhere else on the planet.

You can spot amazing creatures on land, in the air and in the deep. Wildlife lovers from all over the world come here to enjoy once-in-a-lifetime experiences as they explore the area’s rich ecosystems: jungle, mangrove forest and wetlands, coastal dunes and coral reefs, all of which are the habitat of extraordinary animal and plant species.
The most famous jungle creature is the jaguar, the area’s apex predator, which was sacred to the ancient Maya. This elusive nocturnal animal roams over a vast territory in search of prey such as peccary and deer, and the forests of the Yucatan Peninsula are one of its last refuges in Mexico. Other felines found in the area are the puma, ocelot, jaguarundi and margay.
The Yucatan’s wildlife also includes spider and howler monkeys, coatimundi, the adorable kinkajou, white-tail and brocket deer, agouti, peccary, Baird’s tapir, otter, manatee and 65 species of bat. Reptiles and amphibians range from Morelet’s and American crocodiles to iguanas, snakes, frogs and sea and freshwater turtles.
There are 555 bird species in the Yucatan Peninsula, including the colorful and mysterious toh, or turquoisebrowed motmot, three species of toucans, great curassow, king vulture, and even some endemic species of hummingbirds. In the fall and winter, the bird population is swelled by millions of migratory birds from the United States and Canada, including waterfowl, waders, sea birds, birds of prey and songbirds.
The Mesoamerican Reef, the world’s second largest, is home to more than 300 species of fish, including the splendid toadfish, found only on Cozumel’s coral reefs, and a variety of colorful marine life.

I love exploring the Yucatan in search of nature and my favorite wildlife tours range from the area’s biosphere reserves to parks in the Riviera Maya to visit with the family.
Two and a half hours to the north of Cancun by boat is Parque Nacional Isla Contoy, an island wildlife sanctuary that is home to more than 160 native and migratory bird species. This bird-watching paradise is uninhabited and during your eco tour you may see herons, roseate spoonbills and colonies of cormorants, pelicans and frigate birds.
For an unforgettable summer nature experience, take a tour from Cancun, Isla Mujeres or Holbox to snorkel with the gentle giants, the whale sharks that gather to feed on plankton in the Caribbean to the east of Contoy. Manta rays leaping from the water, dolphin and sea turtle sightings add even more magic to your adventure.
The Puerto Morelos area offers several opportunities for wildlife encounters. Parque Nacional Arrecife Puerto Morelos is a national park that protects a chain of reefs considered by marine biologists to be among the most biodiverse along the Mesoamerican Reef. Snorkel or dive in clear waters teeming with multicolored fish and other marine species such as turtles and rays.
South of Puerto Morelos, an arch in the jungle indicates the road leading towards the Ruta de los Cenotes. Dozens of natural sinkholes lie deep in the forest, which is home to parrots, toucans, spider monkeys, deer, and jaguar. The cool, clear waters of the cenotes, caves and underground rivers are the habitat for strange species of blind fish, found nowhere else. I recommend visiting as many cenotes as you can because each one offers a unique experience.
Returning to Highway 307, visit Yaaxche Jardín Botánico del Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín. In addition to its extensive collection of tropical species, native trees include the protected chit palm, red mangrove, chicozapote, mahogany and Spanish cedar. Its jungle and mangrove forest are home to more than 200 animal species such as families of spider monkeys and are dedicated to the preservation of the Maya culture.

Continue south to Playa del Carmen and take the ferry to the island of Cozumel for more nature sightings on land and in the water. A patchwork of dense jungle, mangroves and wetlands, Cozumel boasts endemic species of racoon and coati; both smaller than their mainland cousins, and the Cozumel emerald, an iridescent hummingbird. Different species of herons and egrets, ibis and even flamingos can be seen in the lagoons and wetlands of Punta Sur, the island’s largest nature reserve.
Yet Cozumel’s most famous glories lie beneath the surface on its world-famous reefs. Coral pillars, huge sponges, walls, canyons, caves and an endless parade of fish and other marine creatures await divers and snorkelers as they explore the Arrecifes de Cozumel national park.
Discovered in 2010, rare cave sea stars can be found in Cozumel’s waters, along with some unique types of algae, whose hard skeletons have created microatolls, or ring-shaped coral colonies.
If you decide to skip a Cozumel crossing for now, stay on Highway 307 until you reach Akumal, which means “place of the turtles” in Maya. You may see a green or loggerhead turtle when swimming or snorkeling in the bay or the offshore reefs, and sometimes even more than one! This is truly an exhilarating experience. Sea turtles are among the most magnificent residents of the Caribbean, but they are also an endangered species, so please avoid touching them. If your close encounter with these wonderful creatures has left you in the mood for more underwater sightings, head out to the nearby Yal-kú lagoon for snorkeling amidst an amazing array of colorful fish. This is a perfect activity for the entire family, even for less experienced swimmers.
South of Tulum, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is a highlight for wildlife watchers. You can reach it by car on the coast road from Tulum’s hotel zone or by taking an eco-trip from Muyil through the wetlands. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, this massive conservation area protects eight ecosystems including jungle, marsh and mangrove forest, cenotes, beaches, islands and coral reefs. It is a haven for most of the Yucatan’s native species, ranging from the jaguar, ocelot and margay to spider and howler monkeys, tapirs, manatees, and crocodiles. Another thrilling eco adventure takes you to the Gulf coast of the Yucatan and Río Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, a chain of brackish coastal lagoons surrounded by mangrove forest and salt pans, with jungle further inland. It owes its name to the alligators or lagartos that lurk among the mangrove roots but is famous for the thousands of flamingos that feed and nest in the wetlands. Flamingos aside, there are 364 bird species, jaguar, spider monkey, white-tail deer, and the reserve is an important nesting area for the hawksbill turtle.
Further afield, on the west coast of the Yucatan, during a boat trip through the mangroves in Celestun Biosphere Reserve, you’ll see herons, osprey and flamingos with even more vibrant salmon plumage caused by the high concentration of carotene in their diet of tiny brine shrimp.
In the state of Campeche, the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve protects a vast swathe of jungle, home to the jaguar, puma, tapir, ocellated turkey, great curassow and king vulture. As the location of the ancient Maya capital of Calakmul, it is also a World Heritage site.
An eco-trip to the area’s biosphere reserves, a glimpse of the Mesoamerican Reef, and visiting some of the Riviera Maya’s jungle reserves gives you the chance of some unforgettable wildlife sightings.

Over my 20 years living in Cancun, my son and I have explored the parks and with every visit we discover something new. Here’s a peek into the unforgettable days we’ve spent in the area’s top parks, and why they should be at the top of your list for family fun.
A day at Xel-Há: Nature’s giant aquarium
I have many incredible memories of visiting Xel-Há with my son from his baby years to adulthood. The underwater world here is vibrant, colorful, and incredibly peaceful. As a kindergartener, my little one loved the kids’ area. He learned how to snorkel in the Xel-Há lagoon!
Xel-Há offers more than just the best snorkeling in the Riviera Maya; the “Cliff of Courage” is a thrilling 15-foot leap to the water below. Holding hands with my kiddo one Sunday, we made the daring jump over and over. Float down the lazy river, climb the scenic tower followed by a swift ride down the spiraling waterslide, fantastic family action all day long.
Xel-Há is an “all-inclusive” park which makes it easy to eat, drink, and enjoy the park activities with a flash of your wristband. Lunch with a view at the Chula Vista restaurant is always a highlight of my day.
Aqua Nick: a splashing good time for kids
For families traveling with young children, Aqua Nick is an absolute blast. This colorful water park offers slides, splash zones, and thrill rides for big kids and small. It’s a world where you and your kids can meet your favorite Nickelodeon cartoon characters. Meeting SpongeBob? Legendary.

Ziplining above the lush greenery with the Caribbean Sea glimmering in the distance is totally exhilarating, prepare for a splashdown in a refreshing cenote! The newest addition to Xplor’s line up is the Toboganxote water slide, if you dare!
Swimming through the caves of Xplor with my son, navigating through impressive rock formations in crystalline waters, we laugh a LOT. Craving speed, the jungle ATV drive gets our adrenaline pumping as we wind our way through the jungle trails. A cenote adventure at Xenotes Oasis Maya and Rio Secreto
We ventured to Xenotes Oasis Maya to explore the magic of cenotes – the natural sinkholes formed by erosion over millions of years that pepper the Yucatan landscape. Here, you can explore four different types of cenotes. From ziplining into the crystal waters to kayaking and snorkeling, this was a more intimate and tranquil adventure, perfect for nature lovers to feel embraced by the jungle.
Rio Secreto is a system of caves and underground rivers. Walking and swimming through the stalagmites is simply breathtaking. This park is on “repeat” with my son; we return again and again.
Mind-bending Fun at Xenses
Xenses Park was a delightful surprise for our little family. An adventure for the mind as much as for the body, the park features optical illusions and sensory experiences that challenge your perception. The highlight for us was the “Mud River”—yes, you float through a river of mud! It’s one of those quirky experiences your family will be talking about for years.
Xcaret: A blend of nature, history, and culture
Xcaret Park is a world of its own, a must for nature, adventure, and a deep dive into Mexican heritage. Swim in underground rivers, marvel at exotic wildlife, and discover ancient Maya temples and so much more. My family and I have spent hours exploring just a few of the park’s 50 attractions like the aquarium, aviary, and turtle sanctuary. We followed the roaming flamingos on a funky little walk and marveled at the expert horsemanship of the “charros.”
As the sun begins to set, we settle in for Xcaret’s spectacular evening show. It’s a journey through Mexico’s history, from pre-Hispanic times to the present, with music, dance, and dazzling costumes. If you only experience one show during your time in the Mexican Caribbean, this is my top recommendation. The sheer spectacle of it will leave you in awe and the story always brings tears to my eyes.
A Mexican fiesta at Xoximilco
If you love the cultural immersion at Xcaret, you can keep the fiesta going with an evening at Xoximilco. This park recreates the famous canals of Mexico City’s Xochimilco. Float on a colorful trajinera boat, feast on traditional Mexican dishes, sing and dance along to live norteño, mariachi, and jarana music. The dynamic games are a blast, and the food is delicious. Exploring Uxmal and the Puuc Route in southern Yucatan offers a glimpse of the past as Joanna Green discovers

AS THE SETTING SUN turned the sky gold, the immense pyramid and the surrounding temples in the ancient city of Uxmal glowed with a soft light. The sigh of the breeze and the twitter of the swallows were the only sounds and there wasn’t another soul in sight. It felt as though I was looking through a window in time.

The Sierra Puuc, a low range of hills in southern Yucatan, guards a chain of Mayan cities so majestic as to have earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Collectively known as the Puuc Route, Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak and Labná share a unique architectural and artistic style characterized by long buildings with columns, arches and courtyards crowning platforms. The smooth, lower half of the walls give way to elaborate carved friezes featuring masks, serpents, turtles, birds, Mayan thatched houses or na and geometric mosaic patterns.
Water is scarce in the Puuc hills, as there are no cenotes. To survive during the dry season, the ancient inhabitants had to collect the life-giving summer rainfall in chultunes or wells. As if to invoke the Mayan rain god Chaac, distinctive curl snouted masks associated with the god, and the carved likenesses of frogs and turtles, which were his creatures, appear on temple façades at Uxmal, Kabah and other Puuc sites.
The first stop along the Puuc Route is Uxmal. During the Late Classic period of Mayan history, AD 600-900, it was a regional capital, controlling southwest Yucatan and the smaller cities of Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak, Labná, Nohpat, Mulchic.
An enormous oval pyramid towers above the treetops. Standing 93 feet high and incredibly steep, the Pyramid of the Magician owes its name to the legend of a dwarf with magical powers who is said to have built it in one night. The reality is different – archaeologists have discovered that the oval-shaped monument was built in five phases. Mayan rulers erected new temples on top of those of their ancestors to channel sacred power and legitimize their own rule.
Behind the pyramid is the Temple of the Birds where sacred birds such as parrots, swallows and quetzals were captured on stone for posterity. I could understand why. As the sun set, a flock of chattering emerald parrots flew over the city as if in salute to their solar lord.
From the Temple of the Birds, it is a short walk to the Nuns’ Quadrangle, a plaza surrounded by four palaces. This is a place to linger and take in the artistry. Stucco friezes adorned with two-headed serpents, Chaac masks, owls, jaguars, warriors, thatched huts, and a woven mat design, which denotes kingship, extend along the facades. Each palace is different, and they are thought to be representations of the Mayan cosmos: the east and west wings associated with birth and the setting sun, and north and south with regeneration, the heavens, and the Underworld.
I left the courtyard through the arch leading to the Ball Court and climbed a steep mound to the Palace of the Governor, one of the Maya World’s greatest treasures. A mosaic of geometric designs, two-headed serpents and Chaac masks adorns the façade, which is composed of 20,000 individual stones. Lord Chan Chaak K’ak’nal Ahaw, the most powerful ruler of Uxmal is depicted in relief above the central doorway, and the play of light and shadow across the stone creates the illusion of a huge snake slithering across the surface.

Colectivamente conocidas como la Ruta Puuc, Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak y Labná comparten un estilo arquitectónico y artístico único caracterizado por largos edificios con columnas, arcos y patios que coronan plataformas. La mitad inferior lisa de las paredes da paso a elaborados frisos tallados mostrando máscaras, serpientes, tortugas, aves, chozas con techo de zacate o na y patrones de mosaicos geométricos. El agua era escasa en la sierra Puuc, y no hay cenotes. Para sobrevivir durante la temporada de sequía, los antiguos habitantes tenían que colectar las vitales lluvias del verano en chultunes o pozos. Como si se invocara al dios maya de la lluvia Chaac, en las fachadas de los templos de Uxmal, Kabah

The presence of macaws and parrots on the temple friezes led archaeologists to believe that it was associated with the sun god. I looked over towards El Palomar, called the House of the Doves because its nine roof crests resemble a dovecote. Other groups at Uxmal, include the Cemetery Group with its skull and crossbones motifs, the Stela Platform, North Group, Chimez Group, and the House of the Old Woman, the legendary abode of the sorceress mother of the dwarf.
Plan to stay overnight in one of the nearby hotels and return to the archaeological site for the evening video mapping. Uxmal by moonlight is magical and if you have never really looked up at the heavens in search of the constellations, this is the place to start.
The next day, after visiting the Choco Story Museum at Hacienda Uxmal to learn about the history of cacao and its role in Maya culture, I continued along the Puuc Route. Kabah is the second largest site in the area, 30 minutes south of Uxmal. A solitary arch is the gateway to the city and marks the end of a sacbe or causeway that once linked it to its more powerful neighbor.
Kabah is famous for the Codz Pop, or the Palace of the Masks, a name that does justice to its magnificent façade. There are 250 Chaac masks, some even decorating steps or

doorways. Other groupings include the Great Teocalli, a temple-pyramid, the Building of the Columns, and the East Group, where 14 chultunes were found.
Seven kilometers south of Kabah is Sayil. Archaeologists have recovered evidence that its palaces and temples were surrounded by more humble dwellings and orchards where chile, corn, herbs, and fruit trees were grown and irrigated with water from wells.
Dominating the site, the three-tiered Palace has 94 chambers and a façade featuring columns, masks, and sculptures of the descending or diving god, the focus of a regional cult also visible on temples at Tulum.
The turquoise browed motmot, Yucatan’s bird of paradise, is often spotted in Yucatán’s archaeological sites perching on branches or flying to nests in temple walls. In Sayil I saw six clustered in a tree, their distinctive round tail feathers moving in the breeze, giving them their name in Spanish, pajaro reloj or pendulum bird.
A short drive through the forest leads to Xlapak, where a tiny temple is a masterpiece of Puuc art.
Labná is ten kilometers east of Sayil and is famous for the monumental arch or vault which was once the gateway between the ceremonial plaza and a courtyard surrounded by palaces. The arch has an open work roof comb and a richly carved façade featuring Mayan huts, nobles, and geometric motifs.
Rain god masks and a sculpture of a crocodile’s gaping jaws revealing a human head adorn the façade of the Palace. Other groups at Labná are El Mirador, a temple with a striking roof comb, El Castillo, and the East building.
Exploring the Puuc Route is just the beginning. You can visit old henequen haciendas such as Yaxcopoil and Ochil on your way to Uxmal. From Labna, I headed to the market town of Oxkutzcab and the Pueblo Mágico of Mani where the restored 16th-century monastery was the site of an auto da fe in 1562, ordered by Bishop Diego de Landa to destroy thousands of Mayan idols and priceless codices or manuscripts. Later in the afternoon, I visited a textile cooperative to see the beautiful, embroidered dresses, blouses and table linens made by local women.

By supporting education and health causes, the Royal Resorts Foundation is helping to make a difference for the youngest members of the community

HELPING CHILDREN learn skills that will transform their lives and give them a better future, the Royal Resorts Foundation funds physiotherapy for children with neurological and mobility challenges and provides scholarships for a class of children now studying high school.
The Royal Resorts Foundation sponsors seven children so that they can attend the Teletón Rehabilitation Center (CRIT) for life-changing physiotherapy that will give them more mobility and independence in their daily lives.
The CRIT helps children with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular, genetic and mobility-related illnesses. Upon admittance, a case doctor is assigned to evaluate their condition and set a course of therapy based on their needs. A team of professionals then steps in and includes pediatricians, orthopedists, neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, geneticists and psychologists, among others. Treatment includes physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, occupational, art, speech or hearing therapy and life skills sessions. In counseling workshops for the child and his/her parents, behavior, equality awareness and the child’s condition are discussed and support given. The physician decides the frequency of the sessions and there are regular follow up appointments to evaluate progress and identify areas in which the child needs more help. Parents are also

Jorge Rosales, National Sub-Director of Sponsor Outreach, Teletón, says “During occupational therapy, children learn and practice the movements they need to master to get up, wash and dress themselves, eat and communicate, we strive to give them more independence and to improve the quality of their lives. We also teach them how to discover their talents and strengths, some through art and music, some through sport, and in the pool.
“The Teletón workshops give children a chance to shine and learn more skills, enjoy a range of fun activities organized for them and make friends with Teletón volunteers.” He adds, “Some of our children have gone on to become Paralympic athletes and swimmers, basketball and soccer players or to perform in the Teletón Ballet and Choir.
The Teletón idea originated in Chile when a TV host drew attention to the plight of disabled children in the country and launched a fundraising campaign to help them. It was introduced to Mexico in the 1990s by Fernando Landeros to raise awareness about children with mobility challenges. The first annual Teletón charity campaign was in 1997, and the first Rehabilitation Center opened in the State of Mexico in 1999. There are now 24 Fundación Teletón rehabilitation centers throughout the country and more in the pipeline, a Children’s Oncology Hospital with links to St. Jude’s for training, and an Autism Center – the largest in Latin America. There is also a Casa Teletón where children and a guardian can stay while the minor is undergoing treatment, and the adult can take workshops and adult education classes. Thanks to the Teletón, between 25,000 and 26,000 children receive vital physiotherapy and other treatments each year all over Mexico.
Studying for the future
The Royal Resorts Foundation provides scholarships for 36 high school pupils – an entire class – at Colegio Mano Amiga in the Ciudad de la Alegría community center on the outskirts of Cancun, enabling them to attend classes in a happy, stable, and secure study environment and giving them the keys to a better future. Although access to education is a universal right in Mexico, some children still miss schooling altogether or must drop out of school to help support their families. The causes are many and include extreme poverty, migration, broken homes, children having to care for sick parents or siblings, and other social problems. Colegio Mano Amiga school gives children in marginalized areas of the city an education and the opportunity for a better life. Thanks to donations from local benefactors like Royal Resorts, the Mano
neurólogos, fisioterapeutas, terapeutas ocupacionales, genetistas y psicólogos, entre otros. Los tratamientos contemplan fisioterapia, hidroterapia, terapia ocupacional, sesiones de arte, de lenguaje y de audición, así como habilidades para la vida. En los talleres de asesoramiento para los niños y/o sus padres, se discute el comportamiento, la concientización sobre la igualdad y las condiciones del niño y se brinda apoyo. El doctor decide la frecuencia de las sesiones y hay citas periódicas de seguimiento para evaluar el avance e identificar áreas en las que el niño necesita más ayuda. También se muestra a los padres los ejercicios que el niño debe seguir haciendo en casa para fortalecer sus músculos.
Cada cuatro meses, la Fundación Royal Resorts recibe reportes de estos siete niños héroes con caras sonrientes, y estamos siendo testigos de su determinación y su avance.

Amiga School now has about 1,000 students on its roll in preschool, primary and secondary school and senior high.
The Foundation has been supporting some of its scholarship students since the first year of primary school and we have watched their dreams unfold. From the outset, particular importance was placed on sponsoring girls to help break the cycle of poverty, as they are more likely to be impacted by domestic problems that lead to them having to drop out of school to help in the home.
After a dip in performance due to the pandemic, the class is making great strides. Now in their third year of high school, some want to be doctors, nurses, nutritionists, chefs, teachers, lawyers, or engineers. Helen M. says, “I discovered that I like to play the piano, I am now taking classes, and my goal is to become a professional pianist.” Cielo M. says, “We had new teachers this year and interesting projects to work on. I achieved an overall grade of 9.9, which spurs me to carry on studying. I want to thank our Royal Resorts supporters; you are helping us fulfill our dreams.”

Through the Emergency Relief Fund, the Royal Resorts Foundation helps team members in times of need, helping them to cope with the financial burden of a serious illness or major surgery. Sometimes this involves their children and over the years, the Foundation has been there with aid to help families pay for surgical and post-operative care (heart, spinal cord, ear and eye surgery, among others), emergency hospitalization (acute pancreatitis), cancer treatments, speech and hearing therapy.

Gracias a Teletón, entre 25,000 y 26,000 niños reciben fisioterapia vital y otros tratamientos cada año en todo México.
Estudiando para el futuro

Las causas son muchas e incluyen la pobreza extrema, la migración, los hogares desintegrados, los niños teniendo que cuidar a sus padres o hermanos, y otros problemas sociales. El Colegio Mano Amiga les da a los niños en zonas de marginación de la ciudad una educación y una oportunidad para una vida mejor. Gracias a los donativos de benefactores locales como Royal Resorts, el colegio ya cuenta con cerca de 1,000 alumnos en su matrícula en los niveles de preescolar, primaria, secundaria y preparatoria.

Helen M. dice, “Descubrí que me gustaría tocar el piano, ya estoy tomando clases y mi meta es llegar a ser pianista profesional.” Cielo M. comenta, “Este año tuvimos maestros nuevos y proyectos interesantes en qué trabajar. Obtuve un promedio general de 9.9 lo que me anima a seguir estudiando. Quiero agradecer a los patrocinadores de Royal Resorts, nos están ayudando a realizar nuestros sueños.”

Its unique design makes the rounds very safe and the only distractions are the sounds and sights of local birds, such as the colorful motmot, butterflies, and wildlife encounters with a coati, iguana, tepezcuintle (spotted paca), monkey, or peccary.
Greg Norman, Australian golf legend with 77 wins under his belt, was inspired by the extraordinary combination of jungle, mangroves, Caribbean coastline, freshwater canals and cenotes to design El Camaleón at Mayakoba. The course has hosted its share of PGA Tour, World Amateur Team, Latin America Amateur and LIV Golf tournaments, and has recently had some significant renovations to keep up with the prestige and premium service for which it is renowned. The club features the only Jim McLean Golf School in Mexico with its cutting-edge golf analysis software.
Thanks to their conservation efforts, Operations Director Andros Romero mentioned that, “the course was certified by Audubon International, and 700 local and migratory bird species have been registered, along with other jungle dwellers such as the whitetailed deer, coatis, spider monkeys, turtles and crocodiles. El Camaleón is the prom queen of the bunch!” he said.
The Puerto Cancun golf course, designed by 16-times PGA-Tour champion Tom Weiskopf, combines beachfront, canals and mangroves in the heart of a high-end residential community with a marina, mall and commercial areas that is located between Cancún’s Hotel Zone and downtown area. Golf Director Gerardo Peniche recommended that players should curb their expectations because, “some holes are much trickier than they look, but each one has five different tee boxes to give everyone the chance to enjoy their round. One of the things that makes the club unique is Shots, a fun-filled virtual golf experience to try with snacks, drinks and a sweeping view of the driving range.

SPENDING A FEW DAYS at the beach can be a relaxing experience, and the Mexican Caribbean is the perfect spot. To really enjoy my vacation, I decided to start with a massage, and Alea® Spa at the Royal Sands offered me exactly what I needed. The minute I walked in, I knew I had taken a step in the right direction. My first clue was the delicious scent that was coming from the lobby as I was greeted by a friendly staff member who handed me my robe, slippers and key to the locker.

When you book any massage at Alea, staff recommend that you arrive at least one hour prior to your appointment to take advantage of the amazing hydrotherapy circuit. The first stage begins in the inhalation room, where a strong minty scent quickly clears up your airways while you relax. Next comes the sauna, which helps loosen all your muscles. Then comes the steam room, and to top it off, you can spend a few minutes soaking in the large Jacuzzi where I was met by Amada, my therapist.
The softly-lit treatment cabin she led me to was beautifully decorated, the music soothing and a delightful fragrance in the air. Once I was lying comfortably on the massage table, she offered me a choice of essential oils. I chose lavender, which Amada then rubbed on her hands, and asked me to breathe deeply before she skillfully began to apply just the right amount of pressure on the tense and painful areas that I had asked her to focus on during my Swedish massage.
I have always been the curious type, and Amada was more than happy to answer all of my questions, explaining that, “there are different massage techniques to suit different needs. Massages can be used as a preventive measure against a number of illnesses that can be directly traced back to the stress to which we are all exposed in our daily lives. Massages help your body eliminate toxins, boost your immune system, improve sleep patterns, ease tense, aching muscles and are not only relaxing and soothing, but they are also alternative methods that take advantage of the body’s natural self-regulating processes to help you stay healthy.” When my massage was over, with my body relaxed and my mind brimming with interesting information, I was led to the lounge to enjoy some peace and calm, and help myself to water, herbal tea and fresh fruit.

Cuando reserva cualquier masaje en Alea, el personal recomienda que llegue cuando menos una hora antes de su cita para aprovechar el increíble circuito de hidroterapia. La primera etapa inicia en el cuarto de inhalación, donde un fuerte aroma a menta limpia rápidamente sus vías respiratorias mientras se relaja. Enseguida viene la sauna, que ayuda a relajar todos sus músculos. Luego le sigue el cuarto de vapor, y encima de todo, puede pasar unos minutos sumergiéndose en el enorme Jacuzzi donde me recibió Amada, mi terapeuta. La sala de tratamiento con iluminación suave estaba bellamente decorada, la música era relajante y una deliciosa fragancia flotaba en el aire. Una vez recostada cómodamente en la mesa de masajes, me ofreció una selección de aceites esenciales. Elegí lavanda, que Amada luego frotó en sus manos, y me pidió que respirara profundamente antes de que hábilmente aplicara la cantidad exacta de presión en las áreas tensas y adoloridas en la que le había pedido que se enfocara durante mi masaje sueco.
Siempre he sido de personalidad curiosa y Amada estaba encantada de responder todas mis preguntas, explicando que “existen diferentes técnicas de masajes para adaptarse a diferentes necesidades. Los masajes pueden utilizarse como medida preventiva contra una serie de afecciones que pueden tener su origen directo del estrés al que todos estamos expuestos en nuestra vida diaria. Los masajes ayudan a su cuerpo a eliminar toxinas, fortaleciendo su sistema inmune, mejorar los patrones del sueño, calmar los músculos tensos y adoloridos y no sólo son calmantes y relajantes, sino también son métodos alternativos que aprovechan los procesos naturales de autorregulación del cuerpo para ayudarle a mantenerse saludable.” Cuando terminó mi masaje, con mi cuerpo relajado y mi mente rebosada de información interesante, me llevaron al salón para disfrutar de un poco de paz y tranquilidad, y servirme agua, té de hierbas y fruta fresca.
