If I had to describe myself in 3 simple words, it would be free spirited, kickass and incredibly awesome. Actually, very shy by nature, but yet love to meet new people all the time. I love to challenge myself constantly and push myself to a point where I place myself in situations where I get to learn and grow. During this year, I have managed to reach my highest level of growth in my entire lifetime thus far, empowering myself to the point where I could quit my day job and be completely free by starting my own company, and this was the best decision I have ever made!

As I explained in my previous answer, this year has been one hell of a year for me, I've had a few failures, but so more successes and it just keeps getting better. I have managed to start and create, from scratch, my own brand of cosmetics. WAS FORMED “I have always been so fascinated by make-up since a very young age. My mom will probably be able to explain better on how I use to dig in her make-up since I was 6 years old. I have some freckles that I was never really a fan of, so in school I would use my mom’s foundation to try and cover it up – looking quite pale I must add. So everyday when I got to school, it was known already that Callen was wearing make-up, I was always asked to wash my face in front of the entire school. Sometimes I’d refuse and then I would get community service in school for saying no, and sometimes I would just wash my face and quickly re-apply whenever I got a chance. I felt that I had to look

the way I wanted to. As I grew older I started falling in love with cosmetics even more to the point where I would blow half of my salary on foundations to cover my freckles which I loved so much. I just love how you can put on some make-up and it changes the way you feel for that entire day! It really makes a woman feel empowered. In saying that, I could never really find a foundation that was perfect for me and that lived up to their word. I’m not fussy, but if you tell me that your foundation is full coverage and lasts the 16hrs you claim, then hell you better live up to that promise! The hunt continued. promise! The hunt continued. Until one day this statement knocked me off my feet – If you want something done right, then you have to do it yourself. I thought, damn. Am I going to create a foundation? How? Where do I even start?

It took me almost 3 months of research, reading, studying and playing around with ingredients and pigments for me to eventually get it right! I will never forget it, it was 23h30 pm on a Wednesday night that I got the formula perfect, I created a foundation for myself, one that I loved! The next step was to test it. For the next 2 weeks I wore only my foundation and my powder and was extremely pleased with the results, so much so that I kind of forced it on my friends, who later came back to me and told me they gave their very expensive foundation away as they found a better one, calléndra! Nothing is more refreshing than wearing a minimal amount of makeup during hot summer days and still be able to look your ultimate best. Here are some simple steps on how to achieve these simple everyday makeup looks for this summer: Step 1 Apply a primer that fits your skin type. I used the Maybelline Instant pore erasing primer to blur out my models pores, which is also a barrier between the foundation and the skin.

Sunscreen Why we need to always use our Sunscreens! SUNBURN, SUNSCREENS & SKIN CANCER Warning: Sunscreens with very high SPFs (50 or higher) offer the promise of longer protection, but in real life, they don’t work any better than a SPF 15. The following is true:

SPF 15 blocks 93% of the sun’s UVB rays SPF 30 blocks 97% SPF 50 blocks 98% SPF 100 that number stays at 98% A major problem is that high-SPF products also tempt one to stay out in the sun longer, which increases the risk of skin damage. High-SPF products also contain greater amounts of sun-blocking ingredients, chemicals, than low SPF sunscreens. These ingredients may pose health risks. It is better to use a sunscreen with SPF of 15 to 25 and reapply more often. In real life, people apply one-fifth the amount of sunscreen used in the laboratory SPF tests. This means that someone who applies one-fourth as much sunscreen as in the SPF test gets just SPF 2.3 protection from an SPF 30 product. SPF 100 becomes just SPF 3.2. The fact that people use less sunscreen than recommended is not an argument for using even higher SPF products to compensate.

Higher SPF products produce small increases in real-world SPF. But even this small change allows sunbathers to stay in the sun longer – and absorb more overall radiation – before a sunburn sends them indoors. In the process, the substantially greater amounts of sunscreen chemicals 34

in higher SPF products can penetrate the skin and lead to much higher internal exposures to potentially hazardous compounds. The user is left with a burn and a significantly higher “body burden” of sunscreen chemicals. What’s wrong with high SPF? Theoretically, applying SPF 100 sunscreen allows beachgoers to bare their skin to sunshine a hundred times longer before causing the skin to burn. One would therefore assume that someone who would normally redden in 30 minutes could remain in the sun for 50 hours before a burn would appear. But for high-SPF sunscreens, theory and reality are two different things.

Studies have found that users of high-SPF sunscreens have similar or even higher exposures to harmful UV rays than people relying on lower SPF products as they trust the product too much, stay in the sun longer with a single application and get burned when the product’s chemicals break down, wash off or rub off on clothes and towels.

Armed with a false sense of security, they extend their time in the sun well past the point when users of low-SPF products would. Most people wrongly focus solely on the SPF factor within a product when deciding what would be the best choice of skin protection.

SPF means “sun protection factor” and refers only to protection against UVB radiation, which causes burning, inflammation and damage of the skin which is all visible to the naked eye. It has nothing to do with UVA radiation that penetrates deep into the skin, accelerates skin ageing, “the silent killer”, as it can cause skin cancer. This UVA burning is not visible. The SPF statement is only a measure of how well the sunscreen deflects UVB rays. Also consider that SPF ratings are calculated under perfect laboratory conditions with the volunteer applying the correct

amount of product. Other ingredients within sunscreens are very important natural protectors such as Vit C. Since the introduction of sunscreens and sunblocks skin cancer rates began to climb and not fall. For example, melanoma rates doubled fro 6 to 13 per 100,000 people since 1973. Bottom Line People stay out in the sun much longer because they are wearing high SPF so they feel they are totally protected when they are not, leading to ageing sun damage and potential skin cancers. But with the homogenizing creep of Yuletide customs, travelers might well worry they’ll go to the trouble of getting somewhere new over the holidays only to find it’s just like everywhere else. Not the six places here. Each has its own way of celebrating Christmas, and with the festivities unfolding in plazas, parks and other public places, travelers are free to join right in

Castleton, England

This pretty English village in Derbyshire’s Peak District is known for its walking paths and, high on a hill, the picturesque ruins of a Norman castle. It’s also home to four spectacular caverns bristling with stalagmites and stalactites. On weekends leading up to Christmas two of the caves offer caroling sing-alongs. At Peak Cavern’s evening songfests participants sit inside the yawning entrance to the lead cave — which has great acoustics — to belt out “We Three Kings” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Treak Cliff Cavern , which holds its candlelit caroling in the afternoon, is where semiprecious Blue John stone, a translucent purple-banded gem, is still mined. Peruse specimens in the gift shop after the singing is over.

Oaxaca, Mexico

Posadas — door-to-door processions that re-enact Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter — and a parade with candlelit paper lanterns fill the streets of this city in southwestern Mexico. And then there is the tradition of the “breaking of the plates,” whereby people buy crispy buñuelos, topped with sugar or syrup, from stands near the cathedral and then smash the ceramic plates to the ground to signify the end of the old year. But the most awe-inspiring custom is the century-old competition known as the Noche de Rábanos (Night of the Radishes) on the evening of Dec. 23. Although the larger-than-life nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square is under wraps until Dec. 24, when this year’s still-top-secret version will be unveiled just in time for the Pope’s midnight Mass, you can feast your eyes on the remarkably detailed 18th-century Neapolitan carved-wood crib at the Church of SS. Cosma and Damiano by the main entrance to the Roman Forum, and visit the annual “100 Presepi” exhibition at the Sale del Bramante, Piazza del Popolo, to see crib elements made of everything from coral to chocolate. Or just duck into any church or cathedral you happen by. Want to set up a crèche of your own? Pick up nativity figures at the Piazza Navona Christmas market — along with burlapand-straw depictions of the Italian witch called La Befana, said to fly around on a broomstick at Epiphany, dropping down chimneys to leave candy or lumps of coal.

Jerusalem

In most parts of Israel, where Christians make up about 2 percent of the population, it’s business as usual on Dec. 24 and 25. But in this city where Jesus lived and died, Christmas is joyously celebrated in the Christian quarter of the Old City. Churches decorated with trees conduct nonstop services in many languages (see cicts.org for listings of services), with Jews and Muslims often sitting in. From Jerusalem, many people make the pilgrimage six miles south to Bethlehem, in a West Bank area under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority (Israel and the Palestinian Authority facilitate border passage at this time of year, with passports still required). Marching bands and bagpipers led by Arabian horses weave through the narrow streets to Manger Square, the plaza outside the Basilica of the Nativity, which stands on the grotto where Jesus was born. 54

Behind today's mythical Santa Claus from the North Pole, is a real saint – St. Nicholas. How he came to be today's gift-giving jolly figure from the North Pole is a fascinating story by itself

Santa has several aliases, depending on the part of the world you live in. The English call him Father Christmas, the French know him as Père Noël, and Kris Kringle seems be a version of the Christkind, or Christ Child, who leaves treats for good German Lutherans. In the Netherlands, he arrives in town on a steamboat or horse from Spain. On the night of December 5, Dutch children put their shoes on the hearth – these days near the central heating duct – hoping that he will fill them with sweet rewards rather than a reprimand for poor behaviour. The Dutch call him Sinterklaas – which has come into American English as ‘Santa Claus’ – short for Sint Nicolaas or St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas and Santa Claus are historically the same man. But unlike the jolly figure who purportedly flies on a sleigh from the North Pole, the saint came originally from the balmy Mediterranean coast.

WHO WAS ST. NICHOLAS REALLY? As a historian of religions who has written books about ancient saints, I caution against reading accounts of saintsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lives as factual history. However, the earliest stories of St. Nicholas seem to correlate with histories and church documents of the period.

According to these early medieval texts, Nicholas was born around 260 A.D. into a Christian family. His birthplace was near the town of Myra, now called Demre, on the southwest coast of modern Turkey. At the time, Christianity was illegal under the Roman empire.

He studied to be a priest and spent time in prison for his beliefs. However, after Emperor Constantine legalised Christianity, Nicholas was elected Bishop of Myra. During his lifetime, he became famous for defending his people against imperial taxes and other forms of oppression. According to the earliest document about Nicholas, from the fifth century, he prevented three loyal generals from unjust execution for treason.

A ninth-century Greek legend claims he revived three scholars who had been murdered and stashed in a pickling tub. He also saved three girls whose povertystricken father wanted to sell them into prostitution. After his death, people believed that Nicholas continued to work miracles. His burial place, below the floor of his church, became a popular destination for pilgrims who begged Nicholas to relay their petitions to God

Proof that Nicholas was listening, they believed, was in the “manna” – holy oil or water – that dripped from the tomb. Pilgrims took this manna home in little bottles or used rags to sop up the moisture that dripped from the saint’s tomb in its subterranean crypt. This was a common pilgrimage practice at Christian shrines.

Visitors to the coastal town of Myra spread Nicholas’ fame along sea routes across the Mediterranean. From there, word passed to the Latin West, and upriver to Russia. Soon, pilgrims from all over Christendom were journeying to Myra to seek the gifts of protection and heaing from the saint, who was said to be especially attentive to children. ITALIANS STEAL THE BODY

This pilgrimage was disrupted in the 11th century when Seljuk Turks invaded Anatolia. Christians feared that the Muslims who now governed Demre would disregard the saint’s tomb. So, one crew of pious Italian Christians decided to take action. In 1087, three ships laden with grain set out from Bari, on Italy’s southeast coast, bound for Antioch. However, according to a monk named Nicephorus who wrote immediately after the event, their real mission was to steal St. Nicholas’ body. In Antioch they heard a rumour that the Venetians too were planning a similar heist. The Barian sailors hastily sold off their grain and headed for Myra in search of St. Nicholas’ church. Priestly custodians there became suspicious when the sailors asked to

see the saint’s body. The Barians claimed that the pope had a vision directing him to fetch Nicholas to Italy. When the priests refused, they offered gold for the relics, but the offer “was tossed aside like dung.” Done with arguing, the Barians caught and bound the priests. Suddenly, a phial of manna fell to the pavement and broke. It

seemed that St. Nicho as spoke to them: “It is my will that I leave here with you.” So, the Barians broke through marble floor with picks and hammers. A delicious aroma filled the church as they opened the tomb. They found the bones swimming in a small sea of manna. They carefully wrapped the relics in a silk case brought for the purpose. Nicephorus describes how they fled to their ship, pursued by outraged priests and a howling crowd of citizens demanding that they “give back the father who has by his protection kept us safe from visible foes.” Yet the crew made it back to the harbor at Bari, where the townsfolk and clergy processed, singing joyous hymns, to greet the saint. ST. NICHOLAS GETS A REPUTATION

A new church was built for Nicholas in the court of the governor of Bari. A few years later, Pope Urban II — the one who would preach the First Crusade – formally enshrined the relics of the saint. ROYAL ROUGE MAGAZINE | 2019 | WWW.ROYALROUGE.CO.ZA

The Barians believed that manna continued to ooze from Nicholas’ coffin. And going by the claim on the basilica’s website, the belief persists to this day. Within a decade of the saint’s arrival in 1087, the Basilica di San Nicola was one of Europe’s most popular pilgrimage destinations. May 9 is still celebrated as the day that Nicholas moved shrines or was “translated.” For at least five centuries, the region, which includes Bari and its saint, was caught in constant wars for possession of southern Italy. In 1500, Bari fell into the hands of King Ferdinand of Aragon, whose marriage to Queen Isabella of Spain created a global naval power. Because Nicholas was a patron saint of sailors, Spanish sailors and explorers carried stories of the saint wherever they went: Mexico, the Caribbean, Florida and other ports around the world.

technology has allowed experts to use the bones to reconstruct Nicholas’ face – he looks like an old Greek man with a broad, worn face. He lacks the rosy cheeks and Anglo-Germanic features of modern Christmas decorations, but like the Santa Claus of greeting cards, he was probably bald. Turkish archaeologists now claim that the Italians stole the wrong body and that Nicholas’ remains never left Demre. They have discovered another sarcophagus dating to the fourth century in the same church, which they claim contains the saint.

Even the Dutch, who rebelled against Catholic Spain and formed a Calvinist republic in 1581, somehow maintained their devotion to Sinterklass. In other parts of Europe, St. Nicholas lost his feast day but his concern for children helped link him to the gift-giving tradition of another December feast day: Christmas.

Meanwhile, historians have suggested that the story of Nicholas’ translation is a fiction purposely created to advertise a new pilgrimage center in the 11th century. Although relic theft was common in the Middle Ages, grave-robbers often made mistakes or lied about the authenticity and source of their bones. Nothing in the shrine at Bari proves that the bones inside belong to the fourth-century Bishop Nicholas. Still, this holiday season, when you tell your children about Santa Claus, why not include the tale of Santa’s welltraveled bones? And don’t forget the manna, which is believed to still flow in Bari.

HOW TRUE IS THIS STORY? In the 1950s, Italian scientists examined the bones enshrined in the Basilica di San Nicola, seeking evidence of authenticity. They found the skull and incomplete skeleton of a man, dating to around the fourth century. More recent
