Mediterranean to Pacific Online Art Collaboration and Art Talk

INTRODUCTION MEDITERRANEAN TO THE PACIFIC: AN ART COLLABORATION The art exhibition “Mediterranean to the Pacific: An Art Collaboration” features several visual artists from across the globe intent on forming an alliance promoting unity amidst cultural diversity through the arts. From countries circumscribing the Mediterranean Sea to nations bordering that of the Pacific Ocean, these pioneers of contemporary art highlighted the role of the bodies of water in symbolically establishing routes facilitating the link essential to cultural exchange. This collaborative enterprise promotes transculturalism which is “rooted in the pursuit to define shared interests and common values across cultural and national boundaries”. At the heart of this undertaking is the dynamics of cultural fluidity and change. In this age and time where ambiguity is accepted as a resolution to the discourse of an artwork’s meaning, trans culturalism instead addresses the multidimensional aspects defining art and art making as a socio-historic device embodying societal identity. Although separated by distance across the seas, these visual artists actualize commonality as well as heterogeneity in their pursual of image/mark-making. Not only do they manifest through their art a fluency in embodying their personal and regenerative cultural distinctness, but foremost is the vitality displayed in representing the on-going shifts in their nation’s customs and tradition. In the realm of figurative foray, Anthony Nsofor (Nigeria) harnessed the expressionist language involving distortion of human figure/s to depict the multi-faceted particularity of society. Decoachia Dieng (Senegal) emphasized heritage lineament, custom, and national identity in his oeuvre. Emine Tokmakkaya (Turkey) employed an

aspect of magic realism in portraying the aspirations of his people. Roy Espinosa (Philippines)’s composition embodied the gentle temperament of the Filipino which is a distinct attribute embedded in their tradition. Dang Tuan (Vietnam) designated a folk-loric depiction usually employed in myth-making to expound on personal and cultural ideation. Abu Jalal Sarimon (Singapore) appropriated ‘westernized’ figures to showcase an allegorical depiction of his community. Syis Paindow’s (Indonesia) imagery embodied his country’s distinct heritage immersed in mythical and religious underpinnings. The virtual art exhibition also showcased works steeped in symbolic imagery. Abdeslem Azdem (Morocco) deployed semiotics in his rendition of man and his affiliation with nature and society. Bedia Kale (North Cyprus) elucidated anthropomorphic motif that are emblematic of corporeality of symbols and signs. Alternatively, landscape representations abound in the works of Hsiao Chu Sheng (Taiwan) whose atmospheric scenery hinted on an overview of mountainous terrain, and Suzlee Ibrahim’s (Malaysia) abstracted splashes of forms and color speaks of bounteous and lush wilderness. On the other hand, the gestural gesticulations of Ashis Pahi (India) captures the tempestuous forces of nature with the cyclical swirling motions of curvilinear lines, while Ipek Denizli’s (North Cyprus) ebullient markings are expressive of a cathartic combustion signaling renewal and rebirth’ Trans culturalism necessitates openness to nuances in the flux of cultural topography and the collaborative venture engaged herein is an effective approach in bridging differences among nations across the world.

He also worked briefly as an art writer for The Comet Newspapers, Lagos, and has written essays for several publications. His writing career led to him create a personal blog in 2008. He has exhibited locally and internationally (and frequently participated in the last two decades of exhibitions of artists from the new Uli School). In 2012, he had a significant solo exhibition at the Pan Atlantic University featuring paintings, sound, and photographs. In 2015, he relocated his studio from Lagos to Oguta, his hometown. He now works between Oguta and Lagos, Nigeria; Abidjan (Ivory Coast) and in the USA- all places where he lives and works concurrently. Nsofor’s works actively ask questions of nationality in Nigeria

under a nepotistic leader. His work focuses on the Black experience and encounters in Other spaces- with being the black male with all the connotations attached from a troubled history, the politics of being pushed to the periphery, of migrations. An avid traveller, he is fascinated by the cultural conversations happening all over the world. Anthony Nsofor is creating more collages and working on building layers of meaning through transposition and projection of images on a surface. He is fascinated by the idea of telling an open-ended story. Presently he is exploring the possibilities of Sound and Video as media for creative work.

The Call of the Mind My artworks are among the many modes through which I commit “The Call of the Mind” bringing my thoughts and ideas, presented to human cultural sensibility. Characterised by finesse and sense of humour, my creations encourage viewers to evaluate the hidden meanings of each work, behind their seemingly simple yet candid compositions. Always ‘strong in colour’, the nature of my artwork is openly apparent, and I skilfully composed this mode of expression to create engaging conversation with my viewers. Profile and info I am Singapore 3rd generation artist and known as the Social Commentary artist. I am the Founder of Freedom & Love International Art Group, Founding Members of TUJU Art Group, Executive Member of Singapore Modern Art Society, Head of Imago Mundi Singapore and Senior Member of Singapore Malay Artists of Various Resources (APAD). I create each artwork as an avenue to share and challenge the viewer’s natural and ideological perceptions of this fast shaping world. Driven by my sharp observation and conceptual visual expression, my aesthetic

variations transform common idea with a fundamental concern towards society, the environment and humanities. I love to explore the richness, joyous and harmonious of colours. I pick human, nature and objects around me as my subject matter that gives freshness and spontaneity to life. I portray colourful perspective to my paintings by applying the vibrant colours, the creative styling, the strong drawing skill with intellectual inclinations yet comical in composition. I love travelling, sketching, reading and writing hence those good habits influence most of my works. I have travelled and exhibited (since 1992) in many parts of the world, namely; Singapore, China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Dubai, Iran, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macau, Netherlands, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Australia, Turkey, Italy and Tunisia.

Dang Tuan Dang Tuan was born and raised in Hanoi, Vietnam, a Southeast Asian country that is home to a millennia of culture. In 1996 he graduated from Vietnam’s University of Fine Arts, where Vietnam’s leading artists have trained. Passionate about the arts even at a young age, Dang Tuan’s artworks are heavily inspired by French artist Paul Gauguin’s ideas. Among Dang Tuan’s early works are themed on human, nature, sceneries, and cultures of the places he has visited. He claims expressive abstraction as his style of painting and utilizes varying materials such as oil, lacquer, acrylic, and silk in his artworks. Just like many artists whose works have evolved over time, Dang Tuan’s recent works are leaned towards contemporary life along with its throbbing issues – society’s decaying moral values, violence, downgrading moral standards, temptation, greed, and negative thoughts. Dang Tuan’s play on his favored colors to impart his painting’s message are aptly chosen. His oil in acrylic “Emotional Exchange” depicts utopia, where humans and animals are able to live along side harmoniously. The choice of bright color (orange) to depict harmony breathes life and exudes positivity to the art piece. The interposing subjects are coherently drawn within to convey the artist’s emotions and ideas. “Young Boy” is about the artist’s concern on the growing violence among the society’s younger generation. His use of varying shades of the color yellow is well employed, both illuminating enlightenment and confusion as madness and

violence lurks upon. As the title itself suggests, “Nightmare” is about the common nightmares people experience emanating from their negative thoughts. The artist successfully conveyed the message through his use of the brown shades of color, bringing up the feeling of fear and fright to the viewer. One of the highlights in Dang Tuan’s career as a painter is having the privilege of curating the open lacquer project ““Collaboration project of Vietnamese and international artists” held in Hampden Gallery, Massachusetts, USA in 2011. Realizing his dream as a visual artist and answering his true calling, Dang Anh Tuan founded Palm Artspace in 2019, an exhibiting and exchanging space for Vietnamese and international artists. Dang Tuan has mounted a number of solo exhibitions in his career. His first solo exhibition was in 2004 aptly entitled ‘Milestone” held in Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum, Hanoi, Vietnam.
