From the editor “This world is but a canvas to our imagination,” says Henry David Thoreau, the 19th century American author and poet. Imagination is the core to creativity and knowledge. History has been witnessed examples of creative imagination which has evolved new ideas, new directions and new trends. Whether it was Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Newton's discovery of law of gravitation or William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet; be it architectural marvel of the Taj Mahal or first aeroplane by Wright brothers; all were products of creative imagination. In the issue we have come up with some wonderful projects of some imaginative architects and interior designers. We also bring you the excerpts from the warming conversation with Dr. Dipankar Roy, Global President and CEO of International Art Acts and The Authors Club Worldwide, who pours his heart out in a face to face conversation with GLITZ.

THOSE WE LOVE NEVER GO AWAY, THEY WALK BESIDE US EVERYDAY; UNSEEN, UNHEARD, BUT ALWAYS NEAR, STILL LOVED, STILL MISSED, AND VERY DEAR !”

A playful residential dwelling located at Padra, Vadodara, has been designed by Manoj Patel Design Studio based on factors like, climate and social surrounding context, that breaks down the scale while offering a variation of massing cubes as a new neighbourhood. Ar. Stephen Coates redesigned his Edwardian Villa and annexe in a conservation area in the centre of Kingston upon Thames, London, both has been rebuilt to be highly flexible and low-energy in order to respond to changing needs for a workfrom-home professional couple, their grown up children and extended family and their respective future needs. Creative Head Monica Chawla at Essentia Environments designed this bungalow in Gurgaon around open-to-sky gardens, landscaped courtyards and engrossed green bodies that provide not just a good view out of each window, but also offer complete privacy from an otherwise busy neighbourhood. Interior designer Chirag Mehta at 9 Degree Design Studio designed a modern classical themed spell-binding humble abode in Ahmedabad inspired by European and Roman look. Ar. Anil Anant Mundle, well regarded for elevating spaces he designs, has created a magical space at Paliwal House in Bilaspur in his signature style, combining classic and modern influences with practical edge. The house is a mix of contemporary and Indian fusion décor style. A 200 years old Hanuman Temple also known as 'Gol Mandir' situated in the heart of Kolkata has been brilliantly redesigned by Ar. Sunil Maniramka of Maniramka & Associates and reconstructed without disturbing the existing functioning of the temple with the ground-breaking design approach. International Art Acts has touched more than 16,000 people around the world promoting peace through creative interaction online.

The Last Poem, reinstates romance in an increasingly materialistic world and reminds us to celebrate the joy of life through poetry and music. We wish to rejuvenate relationships with Tagore's philosophy.

I

n a face to face conversation with The Neptune GLITZ, Dr. Dipankar Roy, the President and CEO of International Art Acts and Authors Club Worldwide, pours his heart out. Excerpts are here...

How would you describe your journey with art in the past twenty years which eventually led you to found International Art Acts? When I began my career as an artist in 2001, under my mentor Manjit Bawa, I witnessed how art touched people's hearts. In 2004, we had a massive Indo-American art exhibition of close to sixty-five and eighty American and Indian artists, respectively, in my first foray in art. We marched together in a travelling art expo called Multiple Encounters, which was sponsored by the American government and the then-Culture Ministry of India. During my Delhi exhibit in December 2004, which was inaugurated by our then-ambassador of India and my mentor, late LM Singhvi, I received a call from the Red Cross to head the team and provide assistance to the tsunami victims of Sumatra-Andaman. My life changed drastically over the next few years. I had to adopt over 50 orphaned girl children as a result of the tsunami. I'm so grateful to all those who supported my art and came together to build the lives of the orphans in Andaman and I'm glad it has grown to such a degree. What began with a small group of twenty-eight girl children, today it is close to a hundred girl children who are on their way to having their lives touched by my support of art activities. That is how my art has taken the shape of a service to mankind. The pandemic induced such emotional strain that I felt compelled to bear the message of art after the lockdown in 2020. COVID-19 took a toll on us not only physically, but also financially and socially. All around the world, countries were crumbling. We had no idea how to continue in this condition. The pandemic has forced the cancellation of exhibitions and art shows, 21 T THE NEPTUNE GLITZ T April 2021

completely equipped to create their future with their own hands.

If you had to choose a motto for your organisation, what would it be? When you put humanity ahead of yourself, you will leave your own fo o t p r i nt s t h at w i l l o u t l i ve generations to come.

How is IAA contributing to the welfare of breast cancer victims across the world?

t h ro w i n g n u m e ro u s a r t i s t i c institutions into distress and immediate financial loss. I wanted to use technology to remind people that the world is still alive. Our goal is to reach out to every corner of the world to help connect people with the art that lives not only at the end of their paintbrushes, but also in their souls.

Does art play a role in dealing with differences and handling conflicts peacefully? Art brings people together. The reason why artists from different corners of the world have come together is because art has the power to build communities and bridge cultural and racial divides. Art contributes to the world speaking a common language and help form bonds that transcend differences.

How is IAA contributing to the betterment of the youth? With the support of our mentoring programmes, we have begun to engage the young hearts in Asian 22 T THE NEPTUNE GLITZ T April 2021

and African countries to provide them with a positive state of mind so that they can look forward to a new future. In 2021, we expect to deliver a fully self-sustaining youth squad of International Art Acts. We are attempting to develop a new era of education for youths that will l e a d t h e m d i re c t l y to s e l f sufficiency, so that they are

We extended support to National Breast Cancer Foundation, Dallas, TX, USA to raise more than 2 million USD for breast cancer victims worldwide. We declared an open call to all artists, sculptors and painters of the world through our brand ambassadors, Devoleena Bhattacharjee, Gloria Keh, Laorens Rupil, Catherine Marie Colon and many more. Every artist sends a picture of their artworks via e-mail. The deadline for submissions is April 13. These artworks will be auctioned off digitally, with the proceeds going

to the NBCF, in the presence of all participating artists, IAA members, beneficiary foundation and buyers. After the auction, the artist will be notified of the bidder, the sale proceeds, and will be given a certificate of authenticity. Our logistics staff will pick up the artwork from the artist and deliver it to the buyer. Each artist will receive a copy of the international catalogue as well as a donation certificate.

What are the efforts made by IAA to help artists who have been negatively affected by the pandemic? We were all unprepared and unable to foresee how the monstrous virus would affect us not just physically, but also mentally and financially. We began to communicate with artists from all over the world in order to extend financial support and provide them with the bare necessities for running their households, while also speaking with various art curators around the world. Fortunately, by the end of 2020, we were able to offer financial aid to many artists who have been enduring increasingly stressful lives due to the lack of exhibitions. Many attempts are being made now to introduce their artworks at virtual interactive exhibits. There are constant interactions with curators and artists and IAA does not take any commission or service charge in exchange for the sale proceeds. We request artists, in return, to carry the message of universal peace through their artwork, when we have seen a desperate attempt to disrupt the world's social order in the last year. Our mission is to pursue the message of world peace in order to reach people's hearts.

What are the upcoming projects that you're working on? There are two developments on the horizon. One is the breast cancer campaign, which helps victims of the disease all over the world. We have received over 600 outputs so f a r, w h i c h w e g r e a t l y appreciate. Artists from all around the globe are coming together. There are senior artists who are getting a massive international recognition and I'm sure that will draw the attention of the world's art curators. The second is an animated Hollywood production which is an a d a ptat i o n o f R a b i n d ra n at h Tagore's novel, The Last Poem. We are going to utilise 500 artists who are specialists of watercolour and

preservation of the indigenous arts and culture in the Philippines.

What is the universal impact which you feel Tagore has made on you as an artist? Tagore is an institution in his own right. We were fortunate to have him in our lives as we grew up, whether it was through his music, prose, or poetry. As an artist, his works have had a profound impact on me. Tagore is an artist in every sense of the word, in terms of both artistic and universal ideals. playful residential dwelling that breaks d ow n t h e s ca l e while offering a variation of massing cubes as a new neighbourhood. The designed dwelling is located in Padra, district of Vadodara, based on factors like, climate and social surrounding context. Creating recessed profiles, gave rise to a large surface treatment area at the central corner junction of the dwelling, along with large terrace gardens at various levels. This brings natural daylight and air through windows within the built form to its advantage. Design and orientation of openings of the cubic house aims to incorporate the client's wish for large amount of square meters with amalgamation of urban life in the neighborhood. The configuration of cubes reflects the symmetry of boxes with human scale that adapt to a varied and dense small scale surroundings.

For architects climate plays an important role in planning and designing their projects. Talking about the corner junction on the South – West façade of the house, an opportunity evolved, to create a large surface area of cladding, due to the openings planned in peripheral series. Various combinations and patterns were explored that developed a dramatic experience of numerous shadow movements throughout the day according to sun's movement in Indian context. Pattern depicts, intricate strips carved out from flat clay roof tiles of different sizes. These pieces are all glued together to create one module each. Initially after one module getting ready, through artisanship, a study of shadow patterns were carried out in the studio as part of research to understand the large shadow scale to be obtained. Beauty of the module generates number of shadows through the profile and enhances the artwork. which and where has always reflected in his academic portfolio.

Though her designs are all about creating spaces that are magnificent, extravagant and unapologetically opulent yet they never lose sense of the purpose they are meant to serve. She fervently believes that space planning is an integral and the most 46 T THE NEPTUNE GLITZ T April 2021

important part of the interior designing and that is why it deserves the most attention. She believes in the contemporary design sense and her skill in creativity stems from the way she combines classic richness with modern practicality Her international experience and exposure as well as her deep appreciation for the exquisite design heritage of her native India have given her pioneer status in an exciting design revolution in which both east and west visibly seek inspiration from each other. Her unique style has been brought to the attention of an elite clientele within India as well as attracting curiosity from other designers and patrons elsewhere in the world.

With free standing bathtubs and mirrors, island wash basin counters, the expansive bathrooms present bold layouts. The luxurious stones on the walls and the floor create a rich and exclusive space.

What further elevates her work from that of her contemporaries is her hands on approach to each element in the space no matter how big or small. “I consider details more important than broad strokes. Nothing works without details” says Monica. Her work is not confined to fixed interiors alone but has everything from vases to candle stands to chandeliers to sofas, cushions, accessories, art and décor. 47 T THE NEPTUNE GLITZ T April 2021

The kitchen is also an expansive space with a lot of counter space and well-planned storage and a pantry. The terrace garden is landscaped to offer peace and calm with some potted plants and an interesting Buddha sculpture. It is a great place fo r a q u i e t e v e n i n g o r fo r entertaining. While the interior design plan follows a minimal approach, what makes the home brim with vibrancy and interest are the superior materials used and the perfect forms they are shaped into. The interiors come alive with rich stones and marbles, luxurious carpets, velvet and suede furnishings, sculptural lights, and other materials like wood, metal, glass. The customcreated artworks add character, colour and a bit of quirkiness to the environment.

48 T THE NEPTUNE GLITZ T April 2021

The choice of bold sculptural lights from Moooi and Flos are the other highlight of the project. And the way greenery is used inside and outside the house not only adds freshness to the space, but also works as natural screens. “The owners never need to draw their curtains. The vertical gardens set up strategically offer all the privacy needed,” says Monica. Courtesy: Essentia Environments

Paliwal House Bilaspur

...a riot of colour palettes

The family of 5 members each having a distinctive personalities. The kids wanted a high end sophisticated design where as Mrs Paliwal wanted it to be on an artistic side. Hence, the designers concluded the design to be the summation of both.

The grand entrance itself is a cocktail of classy Italian marble staircase, a traditional Jharoka with a dash of nature thrown in through a semi open courtyard adding natural light and fresh air. A statue of Buddha has been installed amidst the green patch surrounded by water giving away a more serene look to that of the entrance. The handcrafted Jharoka is the most eye catching part for the entrance lobby where the colorful backdrop were hand painted to add a classic traditional charm.

The living space combined with dining area are given a more mellow look by using the hues of umber palette. Major thoughts were given to this space being the most central part of the entire structure and therefore to magnify the overall experience, designers tried to add few natural elements… symbolically. A pine corn shaped centre table and over hung maple leaves above the dining table are the main elements. The look created by falling crystal leaves over the dining area directly from the first floor surely acts as a treat to the eyes for everyone.

Fragments of wood are used in their natural shape for the staircase to give it more of a rugged look whereas the wall was highlighted by stencil painting using various umber shades with a hint of blues and oranges.

A visually cultivated ambience contrasting the soothing environs of that of the living room. The main emphasis were given to the ceiling which is splashed with an abstract painting using vibrant colors.

Wall cladding following the natural grains of Italian marble and a dandelion painting specially hand painted on the veneer overlapping the cladded wall. Where as the eccentric colored furniture were the other highlights. A blend of antique and a classy modern elegant touch, this console has been carved out from a single wooden log. Half part showcasing the antique carved out details and the rest showcasing the minimal side of the modern look with brass coated handles.

A hand painted wall mural flaunting the Arica Palm is giving the most distinctive identity to the master bedroom. The white's – grey's and the evening shadow casting through the grills dramatizing the whole experience for the inmates. The faux leather has been installed using checkered pattern to highlight the minimal ceiling design. Hence, adding grace to the elegant modish interior. Loads of greens were added to amplify the exterior appearance of the bungalow. The minimal wooden pergola shading the single humongous chair and the colorful kingfishers are the added features.

62 T THE NEPTUNE GLITZ T April 2021

The elder son wanted something alluring and classy to be the theme for his room. Mostly with black and white interiors, a tinge of tangerine has been added to aggrandize the character of this particular space. The backdrop of bed has been embellished with zebra printed carpet. For the vanity, designers simply went overblown with the colors and added 2 mirrors on the wall illustrated with flying birds, depicting the free spirited nature of the user.

The most astonishing feature of this bungalow is its third floor. Guest Room/ Lounge. Playing with this area was a whole new level of fun yet it was full of challenges for designers. The entire space has been designed using a huge range of materials with a varied color palettes. Be it mingling various printed fabrics for sofa or be it various colors used for distressed polished back wall. Hand crafted canvas are added to both the walls and the ceilings whereas the rough cement flooring with the heritage look used to intensifies the overall exaggerated colorful concept.

Being placed next to the dramatic ambience and just segregated by a glass partition this space follows the same rhythm. From black and white printed heritage tile to colorful vanity to abstractly designed mirror… each element is vibrantly coexisting and giving this place its own unique style. Ceiling mounted faucet is yet another key feature of this particular washroom accentuating the colorful mirror frame. The main focal point for the lady of the house was her pooja room, carved out the backdrop for the console from white Chianti marble. The minute details were done by the artisans from Jaipur. To further add the extravagant ornamentation designers decorated the veneer ceiling and veneer cabinet with gold leafing. Thus giving a sight of luxury & Simplicity. GOL MANDIR KOLKATA

VIEW OF THE OLD TEMPLE

A

200 years old Hanuman Temple also known as 'Gol Mandir' owing to its circular shape has a lot of religious importance. It is situated in the heart of Kolkata at the junction of 3 roads on Elgin road.

OLD EXISTING TEMPLE SECTION AT YY’

The authorities wanted to fully renovate and reconstruct the temple as the structure was depleting but they had a major constraint that the reconstruction process would not disturb the existing functioning of the temple as the temple is frequented by a large number of devotees throughout the day, all around the year and so it couldn't be shut down even for a day. Preliminary inspection of the temple revealed that the structure of the temple is very "weak" and the whole structure vibrates with the movement of heavy vehicle on the abutting road. Also the foundation was of very shallow depth and over the years additional dead load was added on the temple by making a solid 7 feet high brick dome over the existing roof thereby straining the structure beyond its capacity. A small mezzanine over the temple with no ventilation and lighting was also erected over a passage of time to house storage and also to function as a frequent sleeping area for the priests. The client insisted minimum disturbance of any type to the daily function of the temple and this formed the basis of the design approach. SUPERIMPOSED PLAN OF GARBHA GRIHA

GARBHA GRIHA PLAN

After a lot of deliberation between the temple authorities, architect and structural engineer, architects came out with an innovative design solution. A peripheral RCC wall of 125 mm thickness with necessary fenestration was erected around the existing brick work of the building leaving a gap of 250 mm from existing wall and a peripheral foundation strip beam binded the base of the RCC wall. Special measures were taken so that the existing foundation of the temple is not disturbed which came as a constraint resulting in having the proposed foundation of the same depth as the existing foundation.

The RCC wall was erected up to the height of 4 m from the existing road level. A RCC slab was constructed at 4m level, almost a meter high from the existing roof of the temple so as not to disturb the temple below. The top part of the existing slab provided the necessary base for props for shuttering for the dome above. The 4m high RCC "envelope" wall along the RCC slab on top stabilized the cylindrical portion of the temple and compensated for the low foundation depth. Next the solid brick dome was dismantled and a new RCC hollow dome was erected on the peripheral 1800 mm brick wall over the mezzanine. Necessary fenestrations were provided for adequate lighting and ventilation of the mezzanine floor. After the outer core shell of the temple was completed, the internal partition walls were dismantled first followed by the external walls which were dismantled in the next stage. The renovation addressed the issue of the client and at the same time increased the area of the temple by 30% as existing brick walls were replaced by RCC walls. The exterior and the interior of the temple have been finished with marble cladding comprising of intricate carvings.
