With that being said architecture has the ability to convey an emotion, tell a story, and give a sense of belonging to a community. It is the job of the architect to capture all the human emotions and experiences and mesh them together to create an experience that is timeless. Throughout my experience in studio at the University of Oklahoma, I have strived to find that story to tell and that emotion to convey throughout all of my designs with ideas that challenge the social norm, but fit in to the community that we as architects build.

URBAN FARMING CENTER

Urban agriculture is defined as “the growing of plants and the raising of animals within and around cities” to provide fresh food, generate employment, recycle waste, and strengthen cities’ resilience to climate change.

In Norman, Oklahoma, the urban agriculture movement continues to grow, as community members increasingly desire a connection with the land and their food. A center as such serves the community in means of exploring and educating communities about sustainable and impactful initiatives and with the same ideas as well as serving as a site for demonstration, production and consumption an urban farming center would offer a cultural experience for the public to engage in what typically exists beyond the grocery store aisles.

MORPHOLOGY

The nest essentially deconstructs the carpenter ant’s nest that is normally in trees and rotting wood. By combining the use of process of meshes and frames the nest recreates the ant’s natural habits through carving and aggregation. The mesh tunnels create a gradient for movement from secluded nodes to transition spaces in and out of the nest. The nodes offer a more open and collective space for nesting and returning with food. The nodes are formed through intersections of tunnels and are the main space of the nest. Mesh tunnels are meant for heavier traffic that can be entered and exited through the mesh while solid tunnels are for protection and directed travel.

Pressure is the driving force that is set upon us through each and every day in order to strive for greatness. Likewise countries are pressured to evolve and change endlessly through time. With enough pressure coal can be turned into diamonds, just as 2 nations can be pressured together to create a diverse, beautiful, and rare third nation. Alone the people are fairly average, but when pushed together, it reveals the diamond like beauty of culture, language, and community.

Through the manipulation of dense clay in means of carving and cutting, movement and emotion are found within the spaces that are created. Following the haiku: ENDLESS SPACE PILLARS, ARCH DIVIDED CORRIDORS, MOVEMENT THROUGH THE WALLS dynamic spaces allow the visitor to explore shifts in the terrain and perhaps themselves.
