2015 annual report
Dear Camp Rainbow Gold Supporters: It’s been two years since Camp Rainbow Gold became an independent non-profit, and our amazing team has spent that time investing whole-heartedly in our programs. Two years later, we are fiscally strong, running great programs, continue to have passionate volunteers and a great staff. We’ve had an amazing two years and we have a bright future. This past year was particularly bright. In 2015, Camp Rainbow Gold was able to purchase our new medical trailer that we lovingly call the “Med Shack.” The Med Shack allows us to bring more medically fragile children to camp, providing them care options not previously available at camp and offering comfort and peace of mind for their parents and doctors. Generous donors, including FUNDSY, made the Med Shack possible. FUNDSY is the first, largest, and most successful charity auction in the Boise area and Camp Rainbow Gold was chosen as the 2016 beneficiary of the 50th anniversary FUNDSY gala. Their donation will pay off the remainder of the medical trailer expense. Our Board of Directors continues to grow, and combined boasts more than 100 years of Camp Rainbow Gold experience! Jeremy Chou – a long-time camp supporter and volunteer – stepped into the position of Board President as Tim Tyree’s term ended. We thank Tim for his over 25 years of volunteer service in a variety of positions with Camp Rainbow Gold and are thrilled he will continue as a board member. Under Jeremy’s leadership, the Board continues
to provide excellent support via the diverse experience, enthusiasm, and network each member brings to our table. The Board facilitates camp growth in ways we only dreamed of a short while ago, while assuring we are being good stewards of the incredible donations we received over the year. Camp Rainbow Gold is proud to have been honored with a number of awards, foster a strong and committed volunteer base with an amazing 82 percent volunteer return rate and maintain strong donor relations throughout the state. We are diversified in our support and in our fundraising efforts, which can only lead to an increase in the quantity and quality of programming we will offer to our campers, communities, and families in 2016. As Camp Rainbow Gold expands its foothold in the community, we will be able to shine brighter for those who rely on our services. Thank you for helping us dream big and shine bigger. We hope you enjoy reading our 2015 Annual Report. Sincerely,
Elizabeth Lizberg Executive Director

Camps & Programs Camp Rainbow Gold is a magical place where life-long friendships are forged, worries are forgotten and fear is conquered. A place where more than 300 families every year find solace, restoration and joy at no financial burden to them. It’s a place where the grit of dirt, smears of finger-paint and the smell of pine trees replaces the sterility of a hospital room. A place cancer cannot reach.
FAMILY CAMP: Family camp is a retreat for the whole family from the often tough and trying reality of a child fighting cancer. Our family camps are restorative, refreshing and a time for families to enjoy each other in Idaho’s pristine outdoors. SIBLING CAMP: Siblings of a child with a cancer diagnosis can experience very strong emotional and social impacts. As parents focus attention on treatment and recovery, the nurturing a sibling needs during this difficult time can often be a lower priority. Our sibling camps provide the opportunity for these kids to come together in solidarity, have fun and be loved. Just as the child with cancer needs attention and care, so do their strongest supporters — their brothers and sisters.
NOTABLE AWARDS
KTVB Community Champion Best of Boise award (Best Summer Camp) Idaho’s Brightest Star Award (Exemplary volunteer service to the state of Idaho and fostering an ethic of service in others) Best Charity Event “Best of the Valley” in the Wood River Valley
ONCOLOGY CAMPS: Since 1984 our mission has been to serve the children of Idaho diagnosed with cancer and their families by providing medically supervised camps for children (6-12) and teens (13-17) where they can enjoy the great outdoors and have fun with others who are facing the same challenges. Most campers return year after year, building on old friendships, adding new ones and eagerly welcoming first-time campers into the Camp Rainbow Gold family. JUNIOR COUNSELOR PROGRAM: Camp Rainbow Gold’s Junior counselors are previous campers who return to camp to mentor their young peers. COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP: Cancer can be an immense financial and emotional burden to bear. For many families, higher education is out of reach after paying for treatment. Camp Rainbow Gold lessens that burden for many former campers by offering annual scholarships. SURVIVORS SUPPORTING SURVIVORS: Camp Rainbow Gold’s teen support group provides a local outlet throughout the year for teen campers to convene, have fun and discuss various hurdles they may be facing while enjoying a cooking class, glass blowing or haunted house.

story of impact Jay Valle I first learned of Camp Rainbow Gold when I was about eight years old. I had heard great things about camp and I didn’t know what to expect. However, I left camp my first year completely overwhelmed with excitement as I began to develop friendships with fellow campers. The fear of cancer didn’t really exist at Camp Rainbow Gold and I believe that this is what helps contribute to the contagious, free-spirited and uplifting atmosphere. Needless to say, I made sure to come back to Camp Rainbow Gold every year I could – I was hooked! Camp provides a place of refuge and support that allowed me and many others to live life a little more confidently. It’s the network of people and volunteers at camp that provide us with friends and counselors that don’t care if you’re bald, short or disabled. It’s a judge-free zone giving everyone the opportunity to themselves. I soon learned that the benefits and blessings of going to camp are not limited to just
a memorable week with friends when I found myself applying to college. As a young cancer patient, certain lifelong dreams become farther out of reach as poor health and financial setbacks begin to emerge. The possibility of going to college and obtaining a degree becomes slimmer for many. The Camp Rainbow Gold College Scholarship program is one of many programs that helped me attend Brigham Young University-Idaho and reach my true potential. Part of my degree in Advertising Communications requires an internship which I landed with USA TODAY as their Creative Marketing Intern. Since they only hire one intern per year in this department, I knew I couldn’t say
no to this opportunity of a lifetime. While at USA TODAY, I had the opportunity to design and write ads for Microsoft, Oscar Mayer, iHeart Radio Music Festival, AT&T and Pepsi. The possibility of going to school, supporting myself without any help, working while in school and graduating debt-free has now become a goal within reach thanks to the Camp Rainbow Gold Scholarship program. Although I’m not physically at camp, it still finds a way into my life, providing the same free-spirited and uplifting atmosphere thanks to the generous supporters and organizers of Camp Rainbow Gold.
what’s new in 2015? The Med Shack allows more medically fragile children to attend and experience the joys of camp!

share your heart ball The Share Your Heart Ball is a magical experience offered to the community in the hope of capturing the distinct love that is experienced at Camp Rainbow Gold and to raise funds to support our mission. It isn’t just a night of good food, laughter and a great dance band— though those things are on the list of what makes this night one of a kind. It is about exploring the idea of being made strong by love. It is about the chance to change the world one smile at a time. It is about celebrating life.
to provide the experience of Camp Rainbow Gold with the community while raising funds. Without their kind and loving hearts so many beautiful moments would not have been possible. On the precipice of the 15th Anniversary we invite you to share in our celebration. Mark your calendar for February 18, 2017 because this is one opportunity that you don’t want to miss.
Co-Founders Kris Nardecchia and Rob Cronin set out to make a single night that would last a lifetime. For 14 years they have nurtured the Share Your Heart Ball from a furniture sale to an unforgettable and elegant gala designed
