To borrow the words of Dr. Robert Gates, “I have always thought that there ought to be some kind of mandatory national service, not necessarily in the military, but to show everybody that freedom isn’t free, that everybody has an obligation to the nation as a community.” Our “community” was on brilliant display this past year, spanning the multitude of events, programs, and outreach we execute throughout the seasons. It is truly impossible to put a value on what we are able to witness and produce at Higher Ground. I feel incredibly privileged to be a part of an organization where support is tangible and multi-faceted. Our ever-expanding community of donors, participants, and volunteers alike makes it possible to transform the lives of athletes and veterans and offer them unforgettable and life-changing experiences. As I’ve mentioned before, each part of our organizational puzzle is essential to the other; we are inextricably linked as an interconnected community of individuals who understand the power of giving, and have witnessed firsthand the importance of bonds created and nurtured. The generosity we experience through all our events will never cease to inspire me. Thank you all for being a part of our community, and for bolstering what is possible at Higher Ground.

Kate Weihe, Executive Director

“HG really fosters an environment that allowed me to open up and be myself. It allowed me a chance to meet amazing people that shared similar wounds as myself.” — Jaime Havig (US Navy veteran)

HIGHER GROUND MILITARY PROGRAM AT HIGHER GROUND, IT IS OUR GOAL TO PROVIDE the most effective adaptive sports and therapeutic recreation services to veterans confronted with traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress (PTS), military sexual trauma (MST), and polytrauma through the use of evidence-based practices and the sustained continuum of care necessary for a successful reintegration into families and home communities. It is our organizational mission to enhance quality of life through therapeutic recreation and education for people of all abilities.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS  HG Military programs are 100% free to participants and their supporters.  HG Military’s signature 3-year follow-up includes continuous communications between our staff and participants to ensure positive outcomes and individualized goals are met.  HG has worked with acclaimed universities to provide measured outcomes through evidencebased research and results.

Higher Ground provides weeklong programs throughout the year for our injured military community (veterans and their supporters), using therapeutic recreation and adaptive sports to help facilitate a change in perspective and give the participants the physical skills, confidence, and coping strategies necessary for a successful reintegration process. A fundamental component of the program model is the healing, restorative power of being in the outdoors in order to unveil the veterans’ vigor for life through natural settings and challenges. The HG Military Program focuses on the whole family in order to mitigate potential multi-generational effects of the initial injury to the veteran, and to help family members rediscover their potential to be positive, contributing members of society. War injuries place unprecedented stress on spouses and children in military families, but treatment for the supporter or family unit is typically ostensibly overlooked. HG staff selects veterans based on common attributes such as injury, marital status, or home region. The goal for forming this new “unit” is to optimize cohesiveness among service members, and set participants up for individual and group success.

 HG Military’s reintegration efforts help military participants experience a more fulfilling, positive transition into their home communities.

SUMMER CAMP BIKE SAFETY DAY

“I couldn't imagine a life without Higher Ground. It offers my son a safe, comfortable, engaging and fun environment that he can thrive and grow as an individual. There is no better peace of mind for a parent knowing that his needs are being met based on who HE is. Higher Ground is something that my son always looks forward to and couldn't imagine where he would be today without HG as a part of his team.” — Mom of participant

HIGHER GROUND RECREATION PROGRAM

SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS  Maximum 2:1 participant to counselor ratio and high growth rates in camp participation.  Local partnerships continue to grow within our programs including the Wood River YMCA, The Hunger Coalition, the BCRD, Mountain Adventure Tours, the Environmental Resource Center and The Sage School.  The 2nd Annual Off Road Handcycling camp was a huge success with skill breakthroughs for each rider while making friends along the way.

WINTER HIGHLIGHTS  HG provided 4,376 on snow hours to nearly 200 participants.  HG hosted our second Advanced Youth Camp to help potential competitors work towards their Paralympic goals.  The inaugural Backcountry Camp, developed for mono-skiers to experience Alpine, cat skiing and Nordic skiing, was a huge success.

THE SUMMER RECREATION PROGRAM serves individuals in the Wood River Valley and those visiting the valley with physical and cognitive disabilities. This 10-week program provides a unique setting for these participants who otherwise may not have the opportunity for a camp experience. A staff of therapeutic recreation professionals and highly experienced counselors focus on helping our participants develop life skills through appropriate activities, projects, and adaptive sports. We also offer off-road handcycling programs and adaptive road biking programs for individuals with physical disabilities. These Saturday rides and multi-day camps in the Sawtooth Mountains are designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders. THE WINTER RECREATION PROGRAM primarily focuses on alpine skiing, snowboarding, sled hockey, and Nordic skiing for individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities. The goal is to provide individual instruction that increases the participant’s ability to a level where he or she can enjoy snow sports at the highest level of independence. Snow sport goals are set for individuals in order to track progress throughout the season. A new addition this past year was creating a Higher Ground Ski Team for our Bald Mountain skiers. MEMBERS ONLY CLUB (MOC) is designed for local adults (post high school) with cognitive disabilities to get together every Friday for a weekly fitness routine. This program promotes healthy living, social skills, and independence. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM Higher Ground now offers a six-week after school program in the spring and fall for Blaine County 2nd – 8th grade students. This program provides the students an opportunity to recreate outside of school like their peers, but with one-on-one instruction. Activities vary, including swimming, climbing, gymnastics, and track and field.

M Clifford at Smiley’s Mtn Photo

“Lilly was super fun to ski with, we got in sync easily and the turns felt great. My friends and family joined us so we had a happy posse, just the way it should be. Lilly even went out of her way, once again, before I left town. She delivered a framed photo from the top of Seattle Ridge, the two of us smiling and waving before heading down Broadway, or Gretchen's Gold. That'll be a happy memory of an exceptional week and it will give me the motivation to go through all the motions and make all the effort it takes to make sure skiing stays in my life, even though it looks so different and is possible with such less frequency than before. Good turns still feel sweet and are as addictive as ever.” — Teresa Hukari, HGSV Snowsports lesson participant 2015-16, pictured above 6

SPECIAL OLYMPICS We are proud to be the Wood River Valley’s local affiliate for the Special Olympics organization. Currently, the Higher Ground Special Olympics program serves more than 40 local athletes throughout the year competing in Special Olympics sports. Trainings and specific goals are tailored to individual skills and abilities. Higher Ground offers eight programs for our athletes: Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, snowboarding, soccer, basketball, bocce, swimming, and snowshoeing.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS  Strong partnerships throughout the Wood River Valley include (but are not limited to) the Wood River YMCA, Ketchum Parks and Recreation, Blaine County Recreation District, Community School, The Sage School, the Environmental Resource Center, Swiftsure Ranch, Sawtooth Botanical Gardens, and Idaho Social Learning.

SNOWSPORTS PROGRAM Higher Ground is the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) Adaptive Snowsports School for the Sun Valley area. We are thrilled to have the only certified Adaptive Level I examiner in the Northern Intermountain (NI) Division. HG is also proud to have 13 certified PSIA adaptive instructors between staff and volunteers. The Higher Ground Snowsports School is the cornerstone of both our Recreation and Military Winter Programs and is staffed by over 100 incredible volunteers as well as our HG instructors and staff. This past winter, Higher Ground accumulated 4,925 hours on snow, an HG record!

 Higher Ground offers five different programs for our Special Olympics athelets, all tailored to individual skills and abilities: Nordic, Alpine, Snowboarding, Swim, and Bocce teams.  Higher Ground hosted the Special Olympics Winter State Games in 2014 and 2015.  Goal setting with therapists, parents, teachers and participants.

HIGHER GROUND IS GRATEFUL: TO OUR DONORS

You, our donors, are the heart of Higher Ground and your generosity enables us to provide each of our programs with the professionals, equipment, and resources we need to effectively serve our diverse participants. Our collective vision and mission are grand in scope and efficacious in practice, but would be impossible without you. Whether your interest lies in helping our injured service members with PTS, TBI, and MST reintegrate smoothly back into society through our Military Program; or you enjoy supporting our Recreation Program through the Special Olympics; or giving someone with a spinal cord injury the chance to ski to their full potential; your involvement in Higher Ground transcends individuals to affect far-reaching positive change. As Higher Ground continues to move forward and serve more participants than ever before, we are increasingly thankful for the ongoing support and commitment from each of you.

TO OUR VOLUNTEERS

Higher Ground Sun Valley’s pulse comes from our dynamic volunteers and the dedication and love that you put into our programs. Our volunteers dedicate thousands of program hours to make sure our participants are out being active. There are not enough words to say Thank You for all the cold mornings that you have spent teaching lessons on Dollar, the countless hours of office work, the full days at summer camp, and your continuous support with events!
