The Great Classics Sunday 19th October 2014, 3pm Matinée concert! The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to welcome Eduardo Portal to conduct an afternoon of classical favourites from the Romantic era, including Rachmaninov’s passionate Piano Concerto No.2, featuring talented soloist, Natasha Paremski. This much-favoured masterpiece is often hailed as the greatest piano concerto ever written (you may recognise the main themes from the classic David Lean film, ‘Brief Encounter’). The Orchestra concludes this enchanting programme with Dvorˇák’s rousing ‘New World’ Symphony – a piece that is heavily influenced by the composer’s interest in American music, yet reminiscent of his Bohemian roots. You may recognise the beautifully beguiling themes from the melodic ‘Largo’ movement, which were used in a television advert for Hovis bread!

Natasha Paremski performs Tchaikovsky

Tuesday 14th October 2014, 7.30pm Schumann’s undoubtable love of literature is left unquestioned in his exquisite orchestral interpretation of Lord Byron’s dramatic poem, ‘Manfred’. Tchaikovsky’s own orchestral works were heavily influenced by Schumann, one of his favourite composers, and is evident in his Piano Concerto No.1. This deeply expressive concerto is sublimely reflective of the Romantic era in which it was written, and the passionate pianist, Natasha Paremski, will undoubtedly thrill and woo her audience from start to finish. This delightful programme will end with Sibelius’ glorious Symphony No.5. A melodious and majestic symphony with bold brass and sensuous strings, that gradually builds up to a dramatic climax, which will finish the evening in a triumphant blaze of symphonic glory.

Classical Encounters Thursday 27th November 2014, 7.30pm Beethoven’s exhilarating, brisk and light overture to his beautiful opera, Fidelio, will whet the audience’s musical appetites for a delightful evening of orchestral excellence. Another orchestral miniature that is integral to the operatic repertoire is Mascagni’s instantly recognisable Intermezzo from his exquisite one-act opera, Cavalleria rusticana. Talented soloist, Alexandra Dariescu, will join the Orchestra to perform Grieg’s renowned Piano Concerto in A minor, in which Grieg painted a stunning portrait of Norwegian folk music, expressed in its lyrical and melodic themes. To finish, the Orchestra will perform Dvorˇák’s tragically woeful and richly atmospheric Symphony No.7.
