The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is committed to including vibrant new music in its programmes, and this season it gives the London première of the Suite from Tarik O’Regan’s new opera, Heart of Darkness. There is also a concert showcasing the music of great British composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, who has composed music especially for the RPO. As Master of the Queen’s Music, Maxwell Davies writes for many glittering events, but it is the raw beauty of his home, the Orkney Islands, that most inspires him. His Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise always delights audiences with its humorous portrayal of an unruly Scottish knees-up.

Highlights of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2012-2013 season include a concert devoted to the music of Leonard Bernstein, with show-stopping numbers from his musicals and film scores, featuring the bittersweet beauty of West Side Story. Mozart fans will flock to hear his famous Requiem alongside the majestic Symphony No.40, or, for those who prefer Mozart’s operatic music, there are several vocal gems in a programme which culminates in the mesmerising ‘Pathétique’ Symphony by Tchaikovsky.

In one of its most diverse and exciting seasons yet, the Orchestra performs a mixture of classical masterworks, dazzling film scores and brand-new music never before performed in London. This delectable programme of spine-tingling works opens with the Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis by Vaughan Williams, followed by the fascinating Piano Concerto No.1 for Piano, Trumpet and Strings by Shostakovich. The Walk to the Paradise Garden, from the opera A Village Romeo and Juliet by Delius, is a gloriously seductive work, its sumptuous orchestration dripping with nostalgia. As if this wasn’t enough, the epic Fifth Symphony by Sibelius, one of his masterpieces, builds to a climactic finale with its unforgettable French horn theme.

Brahms composed his Tragic Overture while on holiday in 1880, writing that ‘I could not refuse my melancholy nature the satisfaction of composing an overture for a tragedy.’ The Overture encompasses imposing, turbulent ideas, poignant lyricism and memorable rhythms. In Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.2, the irresistibly romantic Larghetto is framed by an animated, intricate opening movement, and a lively finale in the style of Polish folk-music. Beethoven’s expansive ‘Pastoral’ Symphony is a magnificent mixture of charm and innovation, brimming with evocative melodies which create a vivid impression of the countryside in all its majesty.

Written in just three days, Shostakovich’s Festive Overture is a dazzling tour de force, demanding breathtaking agility from the whole orchestra. Also written in haste, the Karelia Suite by Sibelius is one of his most popular works, its shimmering textures and bold melodies celebrating the composer’s native Finland. Prokofiev’s dynamic and colourful First Piano Concerto was written when he was a student; Prokofiev premièred the Concerto himself, considering it to be his first mature work. This programme culminates in the grandeur of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition orchestrated by Ravel, each movement vividly conjuring up a different scene.

A concert devoted to music by one of Britain’s most dynamic composers, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, who regularly works with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and who collaborated with the Orchestra in choosing this programme. The Sixth Symphony and the Violin Concerto were written with members of the Royal Philharmonic in mind, and was premièred by the RPO. Maxwell Davies’ Violin Concerto combines enthralling originality with the influence of Scottish folk music. Of the irrepressible Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise, Gramophone wrote: Davies is a master story-teller in this vividly detailed tone-painting of a rustic, often raucous, allnight wedding celebration. The Independent added: It brought the house down.

This irresistible selection of Russian scores begins with one of Tchaikovsky’s most famous compositions, his achingly beautiful Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, which perfectly captures the tenderness and heartbreak of the young lovers. Pianist Peter Jablonski takes to the stage for Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. One of Rachmaninov’s most exuberant works, the Rhapsody is full of superb orchestration and at the heart of the piece is a ravishing version of the theme. To round off this sparkling programme, Rimsky-Korsakov’s intoxicating interpretation of the Arabian Nights, Scheherazade, brims with colourful sonorities and exotic, seductive melodies. A heady mixture of new music and established classics, this concert combines two renowned masterworks with the London première of the Suite from Tarik O’Regan’s recent opera, Heart of Darkness. Inspired by Joseph Conrad’s novella, O’Regan’s opera has already met with great acclaim for its ‘music of startling beauty’ (The Observer) and ‘a magical and haunting sound-world’ (The Telegraph). Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture is a vibrant celebration of London, depicting a couple exploring the metropolis, enjoying sounds from church bells to a brass band. The Second Symphony by Sibelius is one of his most engaging and beautiful compositions, overflowing with exhilarating orchestral textures.

An essential concert for Mozart lovers, boasting two of his most scintillating masterpieces. Mozart’s ‘Great’ G minor Symphony No.40 was his penultimate work in the genre, written when the composer was at the peak of his powers. After its unmistakeable opening bars, full of intrigue and mystery, the Symphony unfolds into music ranging from elegant lyricism to profound drama. Despite the fact that not all of Mozart’s Requiem was completed by the composer himself, the sheer brilliance of the music makes this one of his most powerful and enduring works. There are some orchestral gems, too, including the irresistible love theme from On the Waterfront. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is joined for this concert by three star singers, all acclaimed for their powerful and expressive voices. A real treat.
