Prokofiev Symphony No.1, ‘Classical’ Elgar Cello Concerto Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade

Charles Dutoit Conductor Susan Graham Mezzo-soprano Stephen Disley Organ

Steven Isserlis, renowned for his expressive tone and masterful performances, performs Elgar’s poignantly evocative Cello Concerto. With its desolate beauty and rich orchestration, it is widely considered to be one of the finest cello concertos ever composed. Prokofiev’s witty Symphony No.1, ‘Classical’ and Rimsky-Korsakov’s sumptuous Scheherazade frame the Concerto, and all three works are deftly conducted by the internationally acclaimed maestro Kirill Karabits.

Charles Dutoit, renowned conductor of French repertoire, takes to the podium for this concert of French masterworks. Mezzo-soprano Susan Graham lends her luscious voice to Berlioz’s beautiful Les nuits d’été, whilst Saint-Saëns’ ‘Organ’ Symphony concludes the evening with its grand and majestic final movement, made popular in recent years by its appearance as the main theme in the 1995 film Babe. page 5
