Even amid this superb line-up of artists, the music itself takes centre stage, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra bringing together truly great works in irresistible combinations. There’s the power of Schumann’s Manfred Overture, inspired by Byron, contrasted with the breathtaking Fifth Symphony by Sibelius. You can hear Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite alongside works by Mozart and Mendelssohn. Enjoy a concert of intimate chamber music before an evening of Wagner, Brahms, and the gorgeous Four Last Songs by Strauss. Or relish Dvorˇák’s magnificent Symphony No.7 after a sumptuous programme featuring Beethoven, Grieg and Mascagni’s beautiful Intermezzo from Cavalleria rusticana. Alongside its series with Pinchas Zukerman, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be collaborating with a host of musicians also renowned for their exceptional calibre. Soloists include three outstanding pianists interpreting some of the finest piano concertos in the repertoire: Alexandra Dariescu performing Grieg; Leon McCawley performing Mozart, and Natasha Paremski performing Tchaikovsky, each artist drawing from the instrument their own unique spectrum of colours. The prodigious young violinist Tianwa Yang will be performing Brahms’ glorious Violin Concerto in a concert which also boasts Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, and an opportunity to enjoy Franck’s ravishing D minor Symphony. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will also be working with internationally acclaimed conductors including Alessandro Fabrizi, Fabien Gabel, Kirill Karabits and Christian Mandeal.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra invites you to explore its exciting new season at London’s Cadogan Hall, a venue celebrated as one of the most vibrant in the Capital. Throughout the season, the Orchestra will be joined by an enticing line-up of illustrious artists. One of many highlights is the Pinchas Zukerman Summer Music Festival, during which the great violinist and conductor Pinchas Zukerman leads the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a thrilling series of concerts, including a programme devoted to the last three symphonies by Mozart – all of them masterpieces.

This programme boasts not one but two symphonies – and while Schubert’s Symphony No.8 is famously incomplete, its two movements are full of memorable melodies and nuanced orchestral writing. Bizet’s Symphony in C opens with great energy and panache, and features a wistful Adagio, rustic scherzo and effervescent Finale. In Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, the cello and orchestra explore a theme inspired by one of the composer’s idols, Mozart. Tchaikovsky creates a charming dialogue between soloist and ensemble, with moments of romantic beauty and boisterous vigour. At the work’s premiere, even Liszt was impressed… Concert presented in association with Instituto Paolo Sotgiu of Lugano.

Egmont Overture Violin Concerto Symphony in D minor

When Beethoven’s imagination was caught by Goethe’s play, Egmont, his adopted home of Vienna had been occupied by the French. The play’s themes of personal and national freedom resonated with Beethoven’s circumstances and views, inspiring some stirring incidental music, with this perfectly paced Overture combining drama, lyricism and, ultimately, victory. Egmont hailed from Flemish Europe, and our concert heads in that direction with music by Belgian composer César Franck, whose D minor Symphony is a tour de force of suspenseful intrigue and lush orchestration. These works frame Brahms’ Violin Concerto, performed by exceptional young violinist Tianwa Yang, which moves from a noble opening movement to the gorgeous Adagio, followed by an energetic finale.

Pinchas Zukerman tutors RCM Rising Stars in an afternoon devoted to Mozart’s String Quintet, which revived the composer’s interest in chamber music after his premiere of The Marriage of Figaro.The afternoon culminates in an outstanding evening concert that showcases this dark and melancholic work, as well as Schubert’s ‘Trout’ Quintet. Purely written for a friendly get together with his friends, Schubert’s Piano Quintet is a remarkable and melodious work.
Schubert’s musical output was nothing short of immense and tonight’s two works illustrate his astounding power of ravishing melody. Sadly, his Quintet was one of his last penned compositions. In melodic contrast, Kodály’s Duo gathers a worldly potpourri of folk music illustrated by a canon, pizzicato strings and ending with a lively dance.

Beethoven’s Prometheus Overture is a grand staple in symphonic repertoire with its rich melody and orchestral declamatory harmony. Brahms’ Romantic Double Concerto harks back to the Baroque concerto grosso, performed by the musical duo of husband and wife! The night concludes with Elgar’s ‘Enigma’Variations, a work that earned the composer the reputation of Britain’s national treasure.

A sublimely beautiful trio of Mozart’s last symphonies, written in consecutive order, demonstrates Mozart’s compositional endurance and genius. Audiences will be taken on a journey from the majestic opening of Symphony No.39 to the contrasting darkness of Symphony No.40 and the masterful ‘Jupiter’ Symphony, which Mozart himself revered.

Schumann became obsessed with Byron’s Manfred in 1829, writing: ‘Agitated state of mind – read Byron’s Manfred in bed – terrible night.’ It was 20 years before he wrote incidental music based on the poem, and the Overture, with its chilling dramatic touches, was considered by Brahms to be Schumann’s first symphony. Schumann himself declared, ‘Never have I devoted myself to a composition with such love and energy as to Manfred’. With its magnificent opening theme, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1, performed by the wonderful Natasha Paremski, brims with passion, and the Symphony No.5 by Sibelius is one of his most glorious achievements, its horn-filled finale a spine-tingling triumph.

Under the baton of Kirill Karabits, this programme features a fascinating selection of works, all exhibiting traits of Classical refinement despite their wide-ranging dates of composition. Stravinsky’s ballet Pulcinella was one of his ‘neoclassical’ gems, using music he believed to have been written by Pergolesi. Mozart’s charming, spirited Piano Concerto No.23, with its famous opening theme, is performed by celebrated pianist Leon McCawley. Mendelssohn was influenced by the likes of Mozart and Beethoven but also by the scenery he enjoyed when, as a young man, he explored Europe on his ‘Grand Tour’. His stay in Scotland inspired, among other works, his evocative ‘Scottish’ Symphony.

Our pre-concert chamber music recital (see below) showcases sextets by Richard Strauss and Brahms, both of whom used this rich ensemble to create music of expressive beauty. Both Wagner and Brahms saw themselves as successors to Beethoven, yet their music was strikingly different. Wagner’s Prelude to Die Meistersinger starts our main concert in proud vein, with Brahms’ First Symphony, being a powerful work of sublime inspiration. These frame the divine Four Last Songs by Strauss – his final and most exquisite piece.

After the gravitas of the three Leonore Overtures, Beethoven wanted to produce something more adventurous, resulting in this spirited work. After the romantic beauty of Mascagni’s famous Intermezzo, from his opera Cavalleria rusticana, Grieg’s Piano Concerto, with its scintillating opening, is performed by acclaimed pianist Alexandra Dariescu. Dvorˇák’s Symphony No.7 perfectly balances dramatic power and irresistible lyricism. With its arresting opening, gorgeous slow movement, dancing Scherzo and thrilling Finale, this is one of the greatest pieces Dvorˇák ever wrote. Not to be missed. RPO Reward Points apply
