RUSSIAN MASTERPIECES Monumental masterworks from one of the world’s most artistic nations, featuring one of the most exciting conductors of our time: Robert Trevino. Includes Russian pianist, Alexei Volodin (pictured), demonstrating his virtuosic capabilities and dynamic flair for Rachmaninov’s mighty Third Piano Concerto – reputed for being one of the most technically challenging concertos in the repertoire (as depicted in the Oscar® winning 1996 film Shine). Also hear Shostakovich’s towering Fifth Symphony; composed under political pressure from Stalin’s regime, this courageous response to Soviet power is as angry and bold as it is heartfelt, and as resonant today as ever.

PORTRAITS IN MUSIC RPO Artist-in-Residence Kian Soltani (pictured), performs Elgar’s captivating Cello Concerto – a soulful work, which passionately communicates the beauty and anguish of the human condition in a way that no words can. Before his departure to the ‘new world’ of America, Dvořák composed his life-affirming Eighth Symphony; nature-inspired, effervescent and joyful – a fitting finale to this series-opener at the Orchestra’s resident home

GREAT ROMANTICS Three great Romantic composers; three contrasting works. With imposing outer movements and a touch of joie de vivre in the middle, Grieg’s Piano Concerto – performed here by dazzling soloist Federico Colli (pictured) – is rightly considered one of the greatest piano concertos of all time. A slightly different mood for the second half, with Brahms’ monumental final symphony. Deep, dark and despairing; boldly affirming the composer’s genius.

Plus, hear unmissable choral masterpieces; culminating with Mozart’s majestic Coronation Mass, featuring the seraphic sounds of the City of London Choir, under the astute hand of their conductor Hilary Davan Wetton, and soprano Grace Davidson.
